City manager reminds residents to park off streets during snow emergency LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com With snow in the forecast Tuesday, Joliet city manager Jim Hock reminded residents Monday night during the city council’s pre-council meeting to not park their cars on the streets during snow emergencies.

“We’re still finding a lot of cars parking on the street during snow emergencies, and they can be, and have been, ticketed. … We haven’t been towing at this point, but we have been ticketing them,” Hock said.

“They need to be off the street.”

With snow accumulation of 2 inches or more, all vehicles must be moved off public streets until the city’s snow plow trucks have had a chance to plow the snow on the street.

Once the snow plow trucks have cleared the street by your house or business, people may move your vehicle back to the street.

Councilman Larry Hug echoed Hock’s sentiment, saying he’s received a handful of calls from upset homeowners complaining that sections of their streets haven’t been adequately plowed.

“I’ve gotten some calls, too.

I actually traveled throughout the district to look … and there are situations where you can see the reason it wasn’t plowed in a certain area,” Hug said.

“You can see where there had been a car there [in a snow emergency]. [Some] residents want to see more aggressive ticketing, even for their own neighbors.”

Hock also said the city con-

tinues to work long, hard hours to combat the snow, which includes the salting of roadways.

“We’re trying to budget ourselves on salt usage because of the availability,” Hock said.

In other news, the city recommended that council members approve an intergovernmental agreement with the Will County 911 Emergency Telephone System Board so the city can receive about $98,000 in grant money.

The city council could vote on the resolution as early as Tuesday night, allowing the city’s fire department to purchase radio communications and computer equipment, including nine computers, 22 vehicle computers and 22 vehicle docks. In turn, the Will County 911 ETS board would reimburse the city for the cost.

JOLIET – A Lemont man has been found guilty of second-degree murder following a “road rage” incident in 2011 in Romeoville.

Jurors spent about five hours deliberating Monday night before convicting Christopher Yeoman, 41, on four counts in the death of Frank Egas, 64.

Yeoman’s attorney Cliff Johnson never denied his client punched Egas on June 2, 2011, at 135th Street and Route 53, but said Yeoman was defending himself and his family from another irate driver. Yeoman honked his horn, telling Egas to “hurry up” when the older man sat through the green light at New Avenue. He said Egas flipped him off and kept cutting off the Yeoman’s minivan down 135th Street. Yeoman’s wife and three children also were in the vehicle.

About 3:45 p.m. Friday, Jahaud Davis, 21, purchased a 50-inch TV at Walmart, 2424 W. Jefferson St., according to Capt. Tab Jensen.

“He showed the receipt at the door, walked out and handed the receipt to Alfred R. Warren, 19, who put the same TV in his cart, didn’t go to the register and showed it at the door to walk out,” Jensen said.

Security personnel called police when Davis and Warren returned about 4:40 p.m. Sunday, Jensen said. Davis paid for another TV set and was walking out when an officer arrived.

“The officer asked where his receipt was and [Davis] said he didn’t have it. But they found Warren inside with another set and Davis’ receipt,” Jensen said.

Warren also reportedly had

marijuana when he was arrested.

Warren, of the 100 block of Iowa Avenue, and Davis, of the 1400 block of Pioneer Road in Crest Hill, were booked into the county jail on burglary charges.

Joliet police raid store JOLIET – Police raided a business Friday allegedly selling bootleg DVDs and knockoff sneakers.

Capt. Tab Jensen said police officers, a federal agent and a private investigator specializing in trademark infringement went about 11 a.m. to Cal’s Place, 260 Ruby St. with a search warrant.

“They found burners in the back to put downloaded movies on discs and over 2,000 counterfeit DVDs, including several new [theatrical] releases,” Jensen said.

Police also found several pairs of knockoff Nike sneakers displayed on the counter, Jensen said.

Calvin D. Chism, 45, of the 1900 block of Carriage Lane, was arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of unlawful use of recorded sound or images and violating trademark rights. He was released from the county jail Saturday after posting a $20,000 bond.

Team representatives meet with Joliet city officials

JOLIET – Owners of the Joliet Slammers are looking for a repeat performance of last year for 2014.

On Monday, Josh Schaub, chief executive officer of the Slammers, along with Chris Franklin, general manager, and other staff visited city officials to explain the overall community impact of the city’s baseball team and stadium in Joliet.

So far, the Slammers owners said they’ve increased jobs, raised attendance and reduced concession prices at the demand of the fans.

The importance of the Joliet Slammers venue downtown couldn’t be overstated for John Greuling, president and CEO of the Will County Center for Economic Development.

“As we look at re-branding downtown and working with the image overall of the area and region… this goes a long way in bringing that validity to downtown as a very important place for commerce and fun,” he said.

Slammers representatives met with the Joliet City Council Baseball Committee to go over plans for 2014. The city owns Silver Cross Field, where the Slammers play.

Some changes this year could include a deck on the left field of the stadium, Schaub said. Recently, they had a consumer study done on their ballpark demographics and found they may want to have a space to appeal to “excited socialites” who want to be able to eat and socialize while they watch the game, he said.

Slammers officials also decided not to renew their contract with Levy Restaurants and manage the food and beverage services themselves, Franklin said. They are currently looking to hire a food

At the top of the list of the Slammers officials’ accomplishments was increasing attendance 10 percent from 2012, with more than 93,000 people in paid attendance for 2013.

One of the ways the Slammers encouraged attendance was by distributing 25,000 ticket vouchers to 75 area schools and libraries through the reading program Spikes’ Super Students. Officials are looking to expand this program to 125 schools.

Icy conditions cause 5 crashes on I-55 13 vehicles involved in chain reaction accidents Monday

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – State police said ice led to a chain reaction of five crashes involving 13 vehicles on Interstate 55 Monday morning.

The accidents, which included three semitrailers, started about 8 a.m. near the U.S. Route 6 interchange. Vehicles were sliding and spinning out, police said.

The crashes shut down northbound I-55 between U.S. Route 6 and Bluff Road for a couple of hours in the morning. One lane was opened later in the morning, but the highway was not fully reopened until 2 p.m.

“The first cars went into a ditch because of ice and the backup led to the other crashes,” Trooper DeAnn Falat said.

One pickup truck slid into the center ditch just north of Route 6 and a car did the same in the immediate area, but

those vehicles did not collide, Falat said. No one was injured in those crashes.

But the backup caused two semitrailers, a GMC SUV, a Chevrolet Malibu, a Ford Fusion and a Kia to crash near Route 6 as well, Falat said.

Three occupants from the passenger vehicles were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

Two more passenger vehicles crashed in a “minor rearend collision about 1,000 feet south of Route 6,” Falat said.

No one was injured there.

Finally, one semitrailer rear-ended a Cadillac SUV a quarter-mile north of Bluff Road. After knocking the SUV into the ditch, the truck continued into the back of a semitrailer carrying scrap metal and pushed that off the roadway, as well, Falat said.

The driver of the truck that hit the SUV and semitrailer was airlifted from the scene.

Officials: Salt not running out; more snow on the way

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Several public works officials said they have plenty of salt for the rest of the winter.

Last year’s mild winter left reserves of salt in storage for Plainfield, Shorewood and the Will County Department of Highways. But officials haven’t budgeted differently.

“There was 20,000 tons in our bins from last winter,” Will County Engineer Bruce Gould said. “You don’t know if it’s going to be different from one year to the next. So I didn’t budget less just because we had a mild winter last time.”

Gould said the Will Coun-

ty Department of Highways, which maintains 265 miles of county roads and highways, is not at a critical point with salt. The department has used 20,000 tons of salt so far this winter.

“The last couple of years were mild,” Gould said. “We got about 40 inches so far [this winter]. Together, they average out.”

The department is currently ordering more salt, but Gould said it’s normal for any winter.

Shorewood Superintendent of Public Works Chris Drey said the salt usage has been greater than last year, but the village is equipped to handle the storms later this week.

“You don’t know if it’s going to be different from one year to the next. So I didn’t budget less just because we had a mild winter last time.”

by Drey, but has more than 1,000 tons in storage. The village also os waiting on 2,000 more tons of salt from Cargill through a contract with the

state.

The village has had to divert some resources from other maintenance tasks, like installing signage, to preparing snowplows and salt distribution because of the snowfall. It has also used alternative solutions to help salt work better in colder conditions.

“We put some beet juice down,” Drey said, explaining the process of preventing ice from sticking to roads. “With calcium chloride and a brine solution, it lessens the amount of salt needed at low temperatures.”

Plainfield also is using beet juice and calcium chloride to help keep cars on the roads, Director of Public Works Al-

len Persons said. But the ongoing blasts of snow and low temperatures also have forced the village to use sand for the first time in many years.

“One of the big challenges is the semi-heavy snowfall,” Persons said. “The subzero temperatures make it difficult for salt to work.”

Persons said the village used between 100 and 200 tons of salt per storm. It used 3,000 total tons as of Friday, but there still are 2,000 tons in storage and 800 tons on order.

“It’s been a challenging winter for sure for all of us,” Persons said. “We’ve gone over our average, 4,000 tons, but we’ve been able to deal with it.”

Evergreen Terrace case moves ahead

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Evergreen Terrace case moves forward with a new quarterback on one side, so to speak.

The owners of Evergreen Terrace are trying to hold onto the subsidized housing complex but will have to defend themselves against the city of Joliet’s condemnation offensive with a new law firm.

U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle granted on Jan. 24 a motion filed by Ungaretti & Harris to drop out as the owners’ attorneys. The lawyers contended they had not been paid since before the trial started and were owed $5 million.

Still, the owners compared Ungaretti & Harris’ departure to a quarterback abandoning the team at a crucial moment.

“With two-minutes left on the clock, the ball on the 10yard line and no timeouts left in the game, the quarterback should not be permitted to head for the sidelines,” the defendants’ stated in a motion filed by its new law firm, Tetzlaff Law Offices.

Tetzlaff Law Offices has taken over the case for Evergreen Terrace owners as both sides prepare for closing arguments, which could be in April.

Norgle in a court statement rejecting the owners’ case for keeping their attorneys called the unpaid fees an “unreasonable financial burden.” The judge also said the owners had enough time to find new lawyers. “[T]o force unwilling attorneys to labor free of

charge in a civil case where parties are not entitled to free representation is not in the interests of justice,” the statement read.

Joliet has been pursuing ownership of the apartment complex, located at 350 N. Broadway St., saying it is mismanaged and has poor living conditions.

Because of the change of attorneys, the deadline to submit summaries of facts and applicable law from each side in the case has been extended to March 14. City Attorney Jeff Plyman said he estimates closing arguments may be presented in April.

“It’s in my opinion an unfortunate distraction,” he said about the conflicted legal representation among the owners. “But beyond that it doesn’t involve the issues in the [condemnation] case.”

The Ungaretti & Harris motion to withdraw also pointed to a lawsuit filed against them by Nancy Gidwitz, sister of Ronald J. Gidwitz, who is one of the owners of Evergreen Terrace.

On Monday, Nancy Gidwitz declined to comment on the lawsuit. A call made to Ungaretti & Harris was not immediately returned.

The defendants said they paid fees totaling more than $7 million to Ungaretti & Harris in the years preceding the start of the trial, which began in September 2012. The city initiated its condemnation case in 2005.

The defendants said they were not told by their own attorneys they would withdraw before the conclusion of the “takings phase” of the case, which included the finding of facts and conclusions of law.

Plainfield signs contract with marketing company

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A new company will handle retail research and marketing and recruitment services for Plainfield after the village board approved a three-year contract Monday.

Trustees unanimously approved the contract with Birmingham-based Retail Strategies LLC during its regular board meeting Monday night.

The contract will provide the village with analytic and retail recruitment services to the village, including demographic research, psycho-

graphic profiles, analysis of future retail space and growth potential and updates on retail industry trends.

“This is very similar to the proposal that we did a number of years ago with a group called Buxton group out of Fort Worth, Texas,” Village Administrator Brian Murphy said to the board, adding that Retail Strategies will do similar work, but also reach out to the retail industry on behalf of the village.

The contract with Retail Strategies costs the village $50,000 the first year, which includes initial market and trade area research and analysis, creation of a strategic

retail recruitment plan, the development and updating of a retail prospect list and representation at national and regional retail real estate conferences.

The second and third years of the contract, which includes updates on plans and representation at national and regional real estate conferences, cost $25,000 each year.

The company can be consulted for additional work at $10,000 per project or $250 per hour plus travel expenses.

The village originally contracted retail research out to Buxton, but its contract expired about one-and-a-half

years ago, Mayor Michael Collins said.

“It was in flux because of the economy,” Collins said about the village contracting out retail research. “We are anticipating the economy to get better now. This company was asking for less than what we had with Buxton.”

Collins said he was happy with Buxton, but Retail Strategies offered similar services at less of a cost.

Murphy said the village also was considering hiring an economic development specialist, but Retail Strategies was more cost effective and had more connections to the retail industry.

The board also moved forward on installing a new pedestrian crossing on 135th Street east of US Route 30, approved a contract with Pittsburgh-based Industrial Appraisal Company for appraising the village’s buildings, equipment and site improvements and updated the Village’s Employee Personnel Manual to reflect the Illinois Firearm Concealed Carry Act and Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act. The village board also approved road closures for three fundraising 5K events, the Midwest Brewers Fest in August and 2014 Cruise Nights.

LEMONT – Mount Assisi Academy students, families and alumnae braved the cold Monday night to attend a candlelight vigil for the closing of the all-girls Catholic high school.

Mount Assisi, at 13860 Main St. in Lemont, announced last Wednesday it intends to close at the end of the school year, citing low enrollment, an increasing deficit and the small number of sisters available to serve the academy.

Students took turns talking about the family they had formed at the school and how they would continue to fight for it, so future students would have the opportunity to attend.

Sophomore Ally Armato, who organized the vigil, said she transferred to Mount Assisi this year.

“I just felt so welcomed by [Mount Assisi] that I thought it would be a shame to see it go,” she said.

She added that with all the intelligent women who have graduated from the school, she thought they could identify solutions to keep the school going.

Maureen Cronan, a 2008 graduate, said the teachers

Quigney said the school is exploring the option of staying open for next year’s senior class. She said the decision would partially depend on student interest.

But even if enough money was raised to keep the academy open another year, she said, that would delay the school’s closing and prevent some of the students from moving on.

“The other thing I cannot do to the students is just one more year and have them back in the same situation again,” she said.

Quigney said she understands why the parents and students are anxious to keep the school open.

“When a death happens, we fight it for a while,” she said. “That’s normal and in some sense it’s good. It tells us what you valued.”

Quigney said the School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King, who own the property, will continue their presence in the Lemont community. They also own the Provincial Center of the Sisters, Alvernia Manor Retirement Community and Our Lady of the Angels House of Prayer.

Father, son team arrested for marijuana operation

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A father and son from New Lenox have been charged with operating a mail-order synthetic marijuana business that netted them $2 million over three years.

James M. Bolin, 49, and James P. Bolin, 31, face 19 counts of drug trafficking and mislabeling drugs. The senior Bolin also faces six counts of money laundering, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Between January and June 2013, the Bolins bought and sold “incense, herbal incense and herbal potpourri” from suppliers in California, Florida and New York.

According to a federal indictment, they actually were buying falsely-labeled synthetic drugs and selling them online as a shop called “Herbal City.”

The Bolins also did business as “H City,” “Shop HC” and “Show Off City.”

The “brand names” on the packages the Bolins allegedly distributed include: G-20 Herbal, Joker Herbal, Caution Blitzen, Kronik Kryptonite, AK-47 24 Karat Gold, Sonic Zero Cherry, Sonic Zero Blueberry, Hip Hop, Darkness Prince, Out World, Cherry Bomb, Caution Platinum Super Strong Incense, Diablo Botanical Incense, Bizarro, Smoking Santa, Mister Happy, Chilly Willy, Red Devil, Angry Birds, Grim Reaper, Game Over, Dead Man Walking,

On June 4, federal agents from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force concluded an undercover investigation by seizing hundreds of packages and $165,247 from James Bolin’s former residence in Manhattan, according to the U.S. Attorney.

The Bolin’s used leased mailboxes in New Lenox and Frankfort businesses to ship and receive products.

Each criminal count carries between three and 20 years in prison and fines ranging from $250,000 to $1 million.

Adair was sworn in Monday as city clerk by Judge Lance Peterson during the city council meeting.

“Becoming city clerk is exciting and humbling at the same time,” Adair said earlier Monday. “I have big shoes to fill, replacing John Enger.”

Adair also is taking over as the city’s budget officer, which she will be appointed to at the next council meeting, Mayor Richard Kopczick said. She takes these positions after working in the city’s water department for years. Her role in that department is being filled by Mitzi Welch, who starts her new job Tuesday.

Monday was her first

council meeting taking on the clerk’s duties during the meeting, including roll call and vote recordings.

“Carol has a background in banking and is willing to stand up to the challenge [of clerk and budget officer] and take it on,” Kopczick said. “I’m looking forward to working with Carol. She’ll work hard to bring herself up to speed.”

Because Enger is retiring before he is midway through his current term, Adair will have the seat until spring 2015 at which time a special election will be held; the win-

ner will hold the seat until 2017. After those two years, the position will be up for election again for its full four-year term.

Enger has served the city for 37 years in multiple roles, including as an alderman. He retired from his positions as clerk and budget officer because of health issues. But he will continue to assist the city, as an independent contractor agreement was unanimously approved by the council for Enger to be a financial consultant for the city for one year.

Enger will receive $1,800 a month for his consultant work.

Kopczick said previously the city’s budget should not have to be amended to accommodate this expense, as it will fall under the city’s “other professional services” budget line item for the remaining three months in this fiscal year.

For professional services last year, the city spent about $22,000. The year before that it was about $11,000.

Canadian drug suspect pleads not guilty

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Quebec man, who was allegedly caught with $1 million worth of drugs in his car when he was pulled over for talking on a cellphone last month, pleaded not guilty and was assigned to a public defender Monday.

Sylain Bergeron, 42, of Stanstead, was the first de-

fendant of the day before Judge Robert Livas and appeared via video from the county jail.

The drug case has attracted the attention of Canadian meSylvain dia because Bergeron of Bergeron’s position as a security official with a pres-

tigious boarding school.

On Jan. 10, Bergeron was driving on Interstate 355 near Homer Glen when he allegedly was seen talking on a phone by state police. When Bergeron was stopped, police said they found more than 900 grams of cocaine inside.

Bergeron is charged with delivery of drugs and is being held on a $2 million bond.

OBITUARIES MICHAEL D. GARCIA Born: Aug. 13, 1952 ; In Chicago, IL Died: Jan. 28, 2014; Cape Coral, FL Michael David Garcia, age 61, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 with his family at his side. He was born August 13, 1952 in Chicago, IL to Salvador and Maria Garcia, now deceased.

Michael was an amazing man, friend, brother, father and grandfather. He had a heart of gold and a very kind soul. Michael was the type of man that wanted everyone to be happy even in spite of his own happiness. He will be greatly missed.

KEITH HARSHFIELD JR. Keith “Ed” Harshfield, Jr., age 67, died Saturday, February 1, 2014 in Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield. Born January 17, 1947 in Sioux City, Iowa, he was a son of the late Keith and Charlotte Porter Harshfield. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Harshfield. Ed resided in Shorewood, IL for 39 years before moving to Smithfield, NC in 2006.

LORETTA HORSCHLER Loretta “Jeanette” Horschler, age 76, born in Port Huron, Michigan and a long time resident of Joliet, Illinois died on January 31, 2013 after a long and difficult battle with Huntington's and Alzheimer's Disease. We are very sad for our loss but thankful that she now rests peacefully; no longer suffering from the symptoms of that terrible illness.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Bernard Horschler; and her siblings, Florence Atkins, Phyllis Carr, and Althea Brown.

She is survived by her siblings, Clara Wahl, Dorwin Pulford, and Ruby Dell; her children, Ruth Metz, Douglas Horschler, and Pearl Strnad; her grandchildren, Shari Tiilikainen, Robert Metz, Kendra Metz, Talia Strnad; and great grandchildren, Kirah Tiilikainen, Taavi Tillikainen and Cash Metz.

Loretta Jeanette Pulford was born in Port Huron, Michigan on December 9, 1937 to Robert Chester Pulford and Florence Gertrude Bailey Pulford. She attended college in Tennessee and worked as a Nurse's Aide at Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital; where she met her future husband, Clarence Horschler.

Jeanette was a long time member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and also the Worldwide Church of God. Caring for the needs of her family was the most important focus of her life. She was a person with a heart to help and give to anyone at anytime no matter the sacrifice; she expected nothing in return; “Always do unto others as you would have them do unto you” was her life long mission. She was her children's biggest encourager, fully involved and interested in their lives. Milk and cookies were always found in the cookie jar for her grandchildren. She was gentle, and generous in spirit to all who knew her. The legacy she and Bob left is one of faith and family. They taught their children about Jesus, sticking close together and to always pray.

This legacy has trickled down to their grandchildren as well.

So, our mom would tell you to celebrate that she is in heaven, with Jesus and her Bob. She would say, “all are welcome,” it takes only a relationship with Jesus Christ as your savior and then she would invite you to her church. Rev 3:20, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Joan Mondale, who burnished a reputation as “Joan of Art” for her passionate advocacy for the arts while her husband was vice president and a U.S. ambassador, died Monday. She was 83.

Walter Mondale, sons Ted and William and other family members were by her side when she died, the family said in a statement released by their church.

The family had announced Sunday that she had gone into hospice care, but declined to discuss her illness.

“Joan was greatly loved by many. We will miss her dearly,” the former vice president said in a written statement.

An arts lover and an avid potter, Joan Mondale was given a grand platform to promote the arts when Walter, then a Democratic senator, was elected Jimmy Carter’s vice president in 1976.

Carter named her honorary chairwoman of the Federal Council on the Arts and Humanities, and in that role she frequently traveled to museums, theaters and artist studios on the administration’s behalf.

She lobbied Congress and states to boost public arts programs and funding.

She also showcased the work of prominent artists in the vice presidential residence, including photographer Ansel Adams, sculptor David Smith and painter Georgia O’Keeffe.

Her enthusiasm for the cause earned widespread praise in the arts community, including from Jim Melchert, director of the visual arts program for the National Endowment for the Arts during Carter’s administration.

STATE Unions, nonprofits want higher caregiver pay The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Union leaders and nonprofit groups are asking Gov. Pat Quinn to support an effort to increase wages for people who care for the developmentally disabled.

The efforts comes on the heels of Quinn’s push to increase Illinois’ minimum wage, from its current $8.25 to $10 an hour, and is likely to be a divisive issue ahead of the November election.

The “Care Campaign” plans to deliver 10,000 post cards to Quinn’s office Tuesday to urge him to support the effort to increase caregivers’ wages. The plan would establish starting wages for such workers and increase the amount Illinois gives to nonprofit groups that have state contracts to care for the developmentally disabled.

Quinn spokeswoman Brooke Anderson did not immediately respond Monday for comment as to whether

the governor supports such an initiative.

A recent Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Facilities survey puts the wage of caregivers working at community-based developmental disability at $9.35 an hour, which it says leads to workers taking on overtime hours and second jobs or relying on food stamps.

Anders Lindall, spokesman for AFSCME, the state’s largest employee union, said Illinois has not increased re-

imbursement for such nonprofit groups to correspond with the cost of living increase, causing wages to fall behind. AFSCME represents some 5,000 workers employed by community-based nonprofit agencies, Lindall said.

State Sen. Dan Kotowski, chair of the Senate appropriations committee, noted “the playing field hasn’t been level for people who work for community-based agencies versus those who work directly for state agencies.”

But some lawmakers argue that the state, which faces roughly a $6 billion backlog of bills this year, must deal with existing obligations before taking on new ones.

They described arriving to a horrific scene at the tiny brick house around 10:40 p.m. Sunday.

“Seeing the very tiny house just covered in blood, I don’t even know how to describe it,” Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said at a news conference.

Davis said police don’t yet have a motive for the slayings.

“I’m a father. I cannot imagine what could bring someone to such a dark place where they would believe that they need to take the lives of their entire family, let alone children,” Davis said.

“There’s nothing that you can say to describe this. You know, there’s nothing you can say to try to console this 14-year-old who saw his family murdered in front of his eyes.”

Chicago police: Would-be car thief stuck in garage CHICAGO – Chicago police said a man who allegedly tried to steal a woman’s car got a big surprise when she handed over the keys – then shut him inside her garage.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Andre Bacon, 21, is charged with attempted vehicular hijacking and theft and was ordered held Sunday in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Police say Bacon approached the woman Saturday and repeatedly demanded that she give him the keys to her 2012 Acura MDX, which was parked in her garage.

She did, but then closed the door behind her and called police. Police reports say Bacon was trapped inside until officers arrested him around 7:30 p.m.

He allegedly was sitting in the driver’s seat with the keys in the ignition when police got there.

U.S. stocks tumbled on Monday, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average down more than 320 points after reports of sluggish U.S growth added to investor worries about the global economy. It was the biggest one-day decline for the blue-chip index in more than seven months. And the drop followed the Dow’s worst January performance since 2009.

The market stumbled from the get-go, with U.S. stocks opening lower after declines in European and Japanese indexes. Then it quickly turned into a slide as a spate of discouraging economic data poured in.

By MARY CLARE JALONICK The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Cuts to food stamps, continued subsidies to farmers and victories for animal rights advocates. The massive, five-year farm bill heading toward final passage this week has broad implications for just about every American, from the foods we eat to what we pay for them.

Support for farmers through the subsidies included in the legislation helps determine the price of food and what is available. And money for food stamps helps the neediest Americans who might otherwise go hungry.

The legislation could reach President Barack Obama this week. The House already has passed the bipartisan measure and the Senate was scheduled to pass the bill Tuesday after the chamber voted to move forward on the legislation Monday evening.

Five things you should know about the farm bill: WHERE THE MONEY GOES: Most of the bill’s almost $100 billion-a-year price tag goes to the nation’s food stamp program, now known as SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. One in seven Americans, or about 47 million people, participates in the program. The legislation cuts food stamps by about $800 million, or 1 percent, by cracking down on states that seek to boost individual food stamp benefits by giving people small amounts of federal heating assistance that they don’t need. Much of the rest of the money goes to farm subsidies and programs to protect environmentally sensitive lands.

SUBSIDIES MAINTAINED: Farmers will continue to receive generous federal subsidies that help them stay in business in an unpredictable environment, but through revamped programs. The bill

eliminates a fixed $4.5 billiona-year subsidy called direct payments, which are paid to farmers whether they farm or not. New subsidies would require farmers to incur losses before they could collect from the federal government.

The bill would also overhaul dairy and cotton subsidies and transition them into similar insurance-style programs. Most farmers would pick between a program that would pay out when revenue dips or another that pays out when prices drop.

The legislation would also spend about $570 million more a year on crop insurance, which, on top of subsidies, protects farmers in the event of major losses.

CRACKDOWN ON FOOD STAMP FRAUD: The Agriculture Department has been

aggressively tackling food stamp fraud in recent years and the final farm bill will add to that. It would step up efforts to reduce fraud by retailers who sell food stamps, track SNAP trafficking and ensure that people who have died do not receive benefits.

The bill would also prohibit lottery winners and convicted murderers and sex offenders from receiving food stamps.

HEMP LAWS RELAXED: The bill would allow farmers to grow hemp, marijuana’s non-intoxicating cousin, in 10 states as research projects.

Those states already allow the growing of hemp, though federal drug law has blocked actual cultivation in most.

Hemp is often used in rope but has also been used to make clothing, mulch, foods,

creams, soaps and lotions.

VICTORY FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUPS: The No. 1 farm bill priority for animal rights groups was to defeat a House provision that would have blocked an upcoming California law requiring all eggs sold in the state to come from hens that live in larger cages.

Livestock groups have fought the state law, which will be a major burden for egg producers in other states who use smaller cages and still want to sell eggs to the lucrative California market. The animal rights groups won, and the provision blocking the California law didn’t make it into the final bill.

The animal rights groups also won language that will make it a federal crime to attend an animal fighting event or bring a child to one.

WASHINGTON – Janet Yellen officially took over the leadership of the Federal Reserve on Monday – and along with it a delicate task: Unwinding the Fed’s extraordinary economic stimulus without spooking investors or slowing a still-subpar economy.

Yellen, the first woman to lead the Fed in its 100 years, was sworn in during a brief ceremony in the central bank’s board room. She succeeded Ben Bernanke, who stepped down last week after eight years.

Bernanke is joining the Brookings Institution.

Yellen, 67, who served as vice chair under Bernanke, is taking over just as the Fed has begun its first modest moves to scale back its enormous support for the economy. At a meeting last week, the last under Bernanke’s leadership, the Fed approved a second $10 billion reduction in its monthly bond purchases to $65 billion.

Open up contract process Gov. Pat Quinn, in his State of the State address last week, described his initiatives for jobs, education and the economy.

In a speech delivered five years to the day after he assumed office from disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Quinn briefly mentioned the ethical woes he inherited back then.

“First, we restored integrity to state government, passing a strong new ethics code, campaign finance reform and a new constitutional amendment to allow voters to recall any governor guilty of corruption,” the governor said.

That sentence amounted to Quinn’s only reference, such as it was, to governmental openness and accountability in Illinois.

We believe more work needs to be done.

One area where greater openness is needed deals with contracts negotiated through collective bargaining between public employee unions and units of government, such as school districts, cities, and the like.

Currently, units of government believe they are not required to release such contracts until after they have been approved.

After a tentative agreement is reached, negotiators for both sides usually take the stance that it’s none of the public’s business what the contract contains. The taxpayers who foot the bill traditionally aren’t allowed to see it until the union members ratify it and the board or council casts its vote in the affirmative.

Such a closed, clubby process sticks in our craw.

After all, the need for secrecy – if one even recognizes that need – no longer exists after a tentative contract is reached. The negotiating has ended, and neither side can gain an advantage from disclosure.

And certainly, after the public employees vote to ratify, the school district gains no advantage by keeping the details under wraps.

Voters are kept in the dark until both sides approved a new teacher contract that will cost taxpayers millions of dollars more than the previous one.

That lack of transparency is why we support legislation filed last year by state Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican from Wheaton.

Ives’ bill would require all newly negotiated contracts between unions and public-sector employers (school districts, cities, counties, the state, etc.) to be posted on the public body’s website for at least 14 days before any action is taken.

Further, after at least 14 days, the public entity would be required to convene an open meeting and receive public comments before a vote is taken.

Such a system would help elected board members, public employees, and the public better understand the contents of proposed contracts. The 14-day window would also allow members of the public to find out how much additional money those tentative contracts would cost them.

Unfortunately, Ives’ bill is stuck in a Democratic-controlled committee, where it will likely never emerge without help.

Ad attacks against Quinn may hurt re-election chances Without a doubt, the most overlooked aspect of Bruce Rauner’s multi-million-dollar TV ad buy has been his advertising campaign’s repeated attacks on Gov. Pat Quinn.

“Career politicians are running our state into the ground, and Pat Quinn, he’s at the top of the heap,” Rauner says in one of his ads that have permeated the airwaves since last November.

“Pat Quinn, a career politician who failed to deliver term limits,” a Rauner TV announcer declares in another spot.

The millions of dollars worth of ads are supposedly aimed at Republican primary voters, but, obviously, everybody else in the state is seeing them, as well. And Quinn, who doesn’t have a well-funded primary opponent, hasn’t bothered to rebut any of Rauner’s multiple attacks. That could’ve been a huge mistake, particularly considering Illinois’ persistently high unemployment rates, the hostile national climate, the never-ending negative stories

If a new Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll is accurate, then Rauner’s months-long unrebutted attacks have helped knock Quinn into a shockingly deep hole.

According to the poll of 1,354 likely general election voters, all four of Quinn’s potential Republican primary opponents have pulled ahead of the long-unpopular Democratic governor.

The poll, taken Jan. 30, found that Sen. Bill Brady leads Gov. Quinn 48-39. Sen. Kirk Dillard and Treasurer Dan Rutherford are ahead of Quinn 46-37. And Rauner leads the governor 47-39.

The self-described party affiliation in the poll was 22 percent Republican and 38 percent

Democratic, while 40 percent said they were independents.

Nineteen percent of the polling universe was cell phone users.

“Pat Quinn has made a career out of overcoming the odds and the electorate clearly know more about him than the others,” pollster Gregg Durham said. “When that balances out, we may see a dramatically different picture.”

Yes, we may. But right now, voters know Quinn and they really don’t like him.

According to the poll, which had a margin of error of +/-2.7 percent, a whopping 59 percent of likely voters disapprove of Gov. Quinn’s job performance.

A mere 29 percent approve of his job performance and 12 percent were undecided.

The poll has Quinn leading his opponents in Chicago, but nowhere else. He’s ahead of Brady 63-25 in the city, and his lead there is similar against the other three as well.

The margin was much higher in the collar counties, where the Republican field led Quinn by an average of 12 points each.

Downstate, though, Quinn is getting absolutely crushed.

The GOP candidates’ average lead is a gigantic 30 percentage

points each.

Take a look at the regional job approval breakdowns and you’ll see what’s behind this.

According to the poll, a whopping 73 percent of Downstaters disapprove of Quinn’s job performance, while a mere 19 percent approve. Another 62 percent of collar county voters disapprove and just 32 percent approve. Suburban Cook voters disapprove of Quinn’s job performance by a 56-25 margin. Only in Chicago is Quinn above water, and even

there, just 49 percent approve of his job performance, while 32 percent disapprove.

Among women, Quinn is doing just barely OK. He’s ahead of Brady and Rauner by a point, in front of Dillard by two points and trails Rutherford by a point.

Men, however, are going overwhelming for his Republican opponents. Brady leads Quinn by 24 points among men, Dillard leads him by 25 points and Rauner and Rutherford lead by 21 among males.

According to the poll, a mind-blowing 62 percent of men disapprove of Quinn’s job performance, while 57 percent of women disapprove. His approval ratings are abysmal.

Just 24 percent of men approve, while 31 percent of women think he’s doing a good job.

The Republican candidates are also whomping the governor among independents, where they’re averaging a 56-24 lead.

The bottom line here is that the mostly union-financed TV

advertising attacks on Bruce Rauner, which will supposedly kick off this week, had better do their magic and disqualify the newcomer or the kabillionaire candidate will just stay on the air until the fall, keeping his advertising foot on the governor’s already hobbled political neck for the rest of the year. It won’t be pretty.

Resident urges others to keep sidewalks clear To the Editor: I found Sister Beatrice Baker’s letter concerning un-cleared sidewalks highly ironic. If she is really so upset by this lack of civic responsibility, she would do well to “start at home” by speaking to her colleagues at Joliet Catholic Academy and Our Lady of Angels.

Not only do these institutions never clear their sidewalks, they dump the snow from their parking lots onto the sidewalks, further impeding pedestrians and blocking sight lines for drivers exiting the lots.

For the record, there already is such an ordinance, but it is not enforced.

don’t be surprised if the race goes down to the final night.

What happened last Saturday evening reinforced that thinking.

Plainfield South visited Plainfield East in a makeup of a game postponed previously. Tipoff was at 5 p.m.

With the snow this area received Saturday, the game’s status was up in the air for much of the day. Finally, the decision was made to stay on schedule, beginning with the sophomore game at 3:30 p.m.

The crowd was not what it would have been under better weather conditions, but those who braved the elements witnessed a thriller.

South, which has been in first place for much of the season, led 51-38 with 6 minutes left. East (13-7, 7-2) awoke from its slumber with a 14-0 run to grab a 52-51 lead with 2:49 remaining. South (10-11, 6-3) hung close, but the Cougars never led again.

When the Bengals went on their run, it largely was their

doing, rather than South collapsing. Cougars coach Tim Boe noted, “If we continue to do the things we can control like we did tonight – effort, defense, rebounding – we should be OK. “Coach Adkins [Branden, the East coach] always has them prepared and they made their free throws at the end.

We didn’t get the ball in the basket in the fourth quarter.

Sometimes the ball goes in and sometimes not.”

Perhaps the reason is the

Cougars’ overall record being below .500. But South has not been at the top of most observers’ list of potential SPC champions despite leading the way much of the season to date. East and/or North (6-2 in the league) usually get first mention.

“South is a scrappy team,” Adkins said. “They’ve been in first place for a while now and nobody really talked about them.

L-W West senior sets record

Romeoville senior Dakota Vostry made a strong showing this year as well, averaging 236.8 to finish third.

Minooka’s Zach Segatto and John Kauffman also had top10 finishes, helping the Indians to fifth place in the team competition.

Although Glover competed at state as an individual, he brought along some Warriors teammates – Eric Ullian, Anthony Castanada and David Eggert – for support and the experience.

At school Monday, Glover was surprised with the congratulatory celebration in his honor.

“It has sunk in a little now,” he said. “I am blessed to see how the school surprised me. They showed me how much they cared.”

Glover, who works part-

time at Lakewood Bowl in Richton Park, has been bowling since he was 3. He plans to pursue his sport in college and sometime in the future, perhaps attempt to bowl professionally. He said he will major in exercise science in college and go into a physical training field.

“I’m keeping my options open,” he said. “I should know in a couple weeks where I’m going to college. I have a good GPA; I am a student first and then a bowler.”

As a youth, Glover also enjoyed playing basketball.

But the seasons coincide so he has not played basketball at West. There never was a doubt bowling is his No. 1 sport.

The state championship provides conclusive evidence.

Jordan, the Bengals’ 6-foot4 ½ junior guard who has committed to Illinois, scored two first-half points against South and sat out the entire second quarter with two fouls.

He finished with 15 points, doing some damage from inside in the second half, but South’s Corey Evers made nothing easy with his sticky defense.

Having to play the entire second quarter without Jordan, and trailing 28-21 at halftime, put East on the spot.

Senior guard Nick Novak and senior forward Josh Smith came to the rescue.

Novak’s contributions included a halftime talk with his teammates.

“We have a list of our goals in the locker room,” Adkins said. “He gave the team a butt-chewing at halftime. His voice met with his actions in the fourth quarter.”

Novak scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter, including the driving layup with 22.9 seconds left that erased a 57-56 deficit and put East ahead for good. He

was fouled on the play, missed the free throw but hustled to the corner and rebounded his miss, further helping sew up the victory.

Smith finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and had a hand in getting South center Miles Snowden in foul

trouble. Snowden, who was having a strong game, fouled out on Novak’s drive to the decisive basket.

Adkins made the point the Bengals, who have won four straight, would not have won this sort of game a few weeks ago.

“The change from earlier in the season, I think we read the headlines too much and that led us to a couple of our losses,” Smith said. “The past few weeks, we’ve had our heads on straight.”

That’s a good place to be with North visiting Friday.

Josh Glover finished third in the Minooka Regional at Channahon Lanes.

The Lincoln-Way West senior was second in the Andrew Sectional at Orland Bowl.

Last year, he finished fifth in the IHSA Boys State Bowling Tournament at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights.

Considering he has done his bowling in an area that generally is considered as good as any in the state, he figured, “Why not go for the gold?”

Glover won the state championship last weekend

and did it in record-breaking fashion. His 247.3 average for 12 games is a new state record.

Among the games on his card were 300, 279, 278, 277 and 266. He won the title comfortably.

He was averaging 235-plus entering the state tournament, about 10 pins Josh Glover higher than he averaged as a freshman.

“I’ve bowled 18 300 games now and I’ve had a lot of 279s and 278s,” Glover said. “But the big thing at state was the consistency.”

Glover’s three-game series went like this: 751 Friday morning, 791 Friday afternoon, 741 Saturday morning and 684 Saturday afternoon.

“Sometimes I like to come from behind,” said Glover, who did not have that opportunity for very long last weekend. “This time I tried not to think about where I stood. It was always 0-0 in my mind, and I concentrated on making good shots.

“After being fifth last year, I wanted to take care of business. If I did that, I thought I would have a good chance.”

Glover becomes the fourth individual state champion from the Joliet area in the last five years. Lockport’s Kyle Anderson won in 2010 and 2011, Lockport’s Shane Matejcek in 2013 and now Glover.

9 area cheer teams moving on state STAFF REPORTS Nine Joliet area cheerleading teams advanced to this weekend’s IHSA competitive cheerleading state meet at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington with their performances in Saturday’s sectionals.

Eight of the nine teams advanced at Riverside-Brookfield. Lincoln-Way East finished second in the Large

Team class, scoring 91.17 points to 92.10 for champion Marist. Lockport was fourth at 89.97 and Joliet West fifth at 89.67 to also advance in Large Team. The top five in each class punched a ticket to state.

In Medium Team, Lemont (86.77) finished second behind Oak Forest (87.30).

Lincoln-Way West (81.50) was fifth to advance. Lemont is in the state finals for a ninth straight year.

Bolingbrook (86.63) claimed third in the Co-Ed Team class to advance.

Wilmington (82.97) was second and Reed-Custer (81.13) was fourth in Small Team.

They will be joined by Dwight at state. The Trojans scored 86.63 to finish second in the Grayslake North Sectional.

High school wrestling Wilmington 39, Coal City 28: Wilmington prevailed in eight of the nine higher

weight classes while Coal City swept the five lowest weight classes. Wilmington winners by pin were Greg Nokis (145), Austin Skoryi (160) and Kyle Davis (220). Coal City winners by pin were Joey Rivera (106), Taylor Cirrencione (113) and Cody Minnick (120).

After winning SPC, South Record ratings wrestlers eye regional for Super Bowl

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com Plainfield South fifth-year wrestling coach Jason Acevedo said the Cougars were fortunate a few years ago to win five dual meets in a wrestling season.

That was then. This season, South went 17-4 in duals, including 7-1 in the competitive Southwest Prairie Conference.

Last Saturday, in the SPC tournament at Oswego, the Cougars claimed their first conference tournament title.

They finished with 158 points to 148.5 for Plainfield Central.

Minooka scored 128, Plainfield East 126.5 and Oswego 112.5 to round out the tightly bunched top five.

“It was really exciting,” Acevedo said. “We won five duals three years ago and slowly have built up from there. All the credit goes to the kids and the work they have put in.”

South will have a chance to see how it stacks up against many of the best in Saturday’s Lockport Regional. Besides the Porters, Lincoln-Way Central, Joliet West, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way North, Joliet Central, Providence and Andrew will be there. Lockport and Lincoln-Way Central are state-ranked.

The top three in each weight class will advance to next week’s sectional.

“There are definitely some great programs there,” Acevedo said. “Some consider this the toughest individual regional in the state. Our plan is to use the momentum from conference and go after the best.

“The way we look at it, if you don’t beat the best in the regional, you’re going to have to beat them in the sectional or at state. We want to wrestle the best and have to be ready to beat the best.”

For all their success so far this season, the Cougars are young. Miguel Silva, who is 35-1 at 113 pounds, won the conference title and was the Most Valuable Wrestler at the conference. He is a threat to win a state championship.

However, he is the only senior in Acevedo’s lineup. The Cougars start seven juniors, five sophomores and a freshman, and there are a number of capable backups who also are underclassmen.

Sophomore Danny Saracco (182) was the Cougars’ other champion. He was one of the leading tacklers in the area as a linebacker on the varsity football team and is 33-3 on the mat.

South also received runner-up finishes from Joe Miner (145), Andy Gastelum (152),

Derrick Biliskov (170), Eric Johnson (195) and Nate Karas (285). Marc Fleener (120) and Ethan Stachniak (220) were third. Danny Escobar (126) and Andrew Bonner (132) finished fourth.

“Silva and Saracco were outstanding,” Acevedo said.

“But it was what some of the other guys did, coming back through to get their place finishes, that did it for us.

“It was really important that we won conference.

Someone gave me a stat that our best previous conference finish was fourth and we had always been more than 100 points behind the first-place team.

“This gives us some validation for all the hard work.

It shows us that anything is possible. But we can’t be satisfied.”

The ratings record is further evidence of how live events are becoming dependable and valuable properties for broadcast television at a time the audience is fragmenting and ratings for regular entertainment shows continue to fall.

“Big-event television is a great way for people to have a communal event, to talk about it socially and to talk

about it as a group,” said Bill Wanger, executive vice president for programming and research at Fox Sports. “You see that in the Super Bowl numbers of the past four or five years. They’ve just gone up to a different level.”

The game also set standards for the most-streamed sports event online and, with 24.9 million tweets, the biggest U.S. live TV event on Twitter.

The Seattle victory eclipsed the 111.3 million viewers who watched the 2012 Super Bowl between the New York Giants and New England Patriots, according to the Nielsen company. Until last year’s game dipped slightly to 108.7 million, the Super Bowl had set ratings records for the previous three years in a row.

just talking about that,” forward Patrick Sharp said. “You can look at a lot of things – they’re all going to sound like excuses.

“But the bottom line is we’re healthy. We’ve got the same team we’ve had all season, so there should be no reason for a letdown. Throughout 82 games there are going to be ups and downs. We’re getting points in a lot of games, but not finding ways to get [victories].

But I feel like we’ve had some great games lately. San Jose [a 2-1 shootout loss] is something hopefully we can build off of.”

The Hawks have not been the potent machine they were earlier in the season. But they

haven’t lost their touch for rising to the occasion. Two of their best performances since the beginning of the season came in two of their biggest, highest-profile games – a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Jan. 17 and a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins in a nationally televised game two days later. This team still knows how to turn it on.

“I’m very confident in this team,” Sharp said. “I feel like it’s there. We’ve got the potential to do great things.”

But they know they have to make it happen, not let it happen.

“In 2010 we won the Stanley Cup and I can tell you in

2011 we were trying to find our identity, with a lot of new players and a new team,” Sharp said. “But we always kind of felt like, ‘Hey, we’re the Cup champs. We can turn it on here. We can flip the switch and be a good team again.’ And it wasn’t really the case.

“I think we’ve learned the past couple of years that you’ve got to continue to get better and better. That’s something we’re aware of, so when we’re going through a stretch like that, we realize we can’t just flip the switch and be a good team. We’ve got to do the little things that make us a competitive team and let our skill take over.”

Good defense still wins titles T

he NFL season is indeed a marathon rather than a sprint, but with the Seahawks’ 43-8 rout of the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII now in the books, another grueling season and race are over.

What did we learn, and where do we go from here?

It seems to me the most emphatic lesson to take from 2013 is that, as entertaining and exciting as wide open offenses and NFL passing attacks can be, defense and ground games still win championships.

Can there be any doubt after Denver’s pathetic performance on the game’s biggest stage, and how thoroughly they dominated the Patriots in the AFC title game, that the three best teams in the NFL this year were Seattle, San Francisco and Carolina?

Could it be mere coincidence that those three clubs all finished in the bottom tier of NFL passing offenses, but were the three best defenses in the league and owned among the league’s best running games?

Is it also just a fluke that each of those clubs possess one of the NFL’s brightest young quarterbacks, but that none of Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick or Cam Newton has done anything to suggest they will be among the league’s top passers but all three can beat

To be clear, I suspect teams quarterbacked by Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees will win another Super Bowl or two before they are all done.

But not without a top defense and a stud running back or two.

Bringing this closer to home, there is a theory that’s been espoused mainly by ill-informed media and fans, but also by the occasional NFL coach or general manager, that teams can contend in the NFL with a big-time offense and an “adequate” defense.

I believe the Seahawks and Broncos just proved – with an exclamation point – that is not the case.

Another hot–button topic to come out of this Super Bowl is the question of whether or not the “cold weather” Super Bowl worked and can work again in the future.

As lucky as the NFL owners got with the weather last week in New York and New Jersey, and as incredibly lucky as they were on gameday, my sense

from Roger Goodell and the other powers that be is they know exactly how lucky they were and that they will be in no great hurry to try it again.

Interestingly enough, the two cold-weather cities with open air stadiums rumored to be preparing bids for February of 2018 – ’15, ’16 and ’17 have been awarded to Arizona, San Francisco and Houston – are Denver and Seattle.

We’ll know more about this at the NFL owners meetings in the spring, but I’d put my money on New Orleans, which will also be preparing a bid for 2018, while the “cold weather” question gets kicked down the road a bit.

What will the next big topic be for the NFL’s owners and its fans? Keep your eyes on St. Louis and Los Angeles.

While it absolutely escapes me why the NFL owners are so determined to put a team back in L.A. when two have already failed and left, and the TV ratings in the market improve markedly when there is no club there, they are.

It was reported Wednesday that St. Louis Rams owner and billionaire real estate developer Stan Kroenke recently purchased 60 acres of land in the L.A. market, and it is no secret he continues to be frustrated

It could just be that Kroenke found a deal on land he couldn’t pass up. Or it could be that he will petition the league this spring to allow him to finally build a stadium in

L.A. and move the Rams back to L.A. Kroenke’s not saying, but it’s a story we’ll watch closely.

LOS ANGELES – The Blackhawks entered Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center with one victory in their previous six games – technically one of the biggest slumps of Joel Quenneville’s six-year tenure as head coach.

“Slump” being a relative term, of course, for a team that has won two Stanley Cup

championships in the past four seasons. Since Jan. 1, the Blackhawks have won five of 15 games. And though they’ve picked up a point in seven of those losses that came in overtime and shootouts, their 5-37 record is well off their blistering pace in the first three months of the season (28-7-7).

In fact, their 17 points are tied for sixth in the Western Conference in that span. Only Vancouver has fewer victories.

And although 17 points in 15 games is hardly a disaster, the Hawks’ mediocrity in January is not a myth. The Hawks know they haven’t been themselves lately.

Now that the first New York/New Jersey Super Bowl was a smashing success for everyone except the Denver Broncos and their fans, NFL owners in other cold-weather cities are sure to be lining up to try to bring the Big Game to their stadiums.

Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, New England and Denver are among the places that can make a case to host it. The next three Super Bowls are set for Glendale, Ariz. (2015), Santa Clara, Calif. (2016), and Houston (2017), and the 2018 field has been narrowed to a domed home in Indianapolis, Minneapolis or New Orleans.

So, the next chance for an outdoor Super Bowl in a cold climate is 2019. Then again,

it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be cold. It was, after all, 49 degrees in northern New Jersey when the Super Bowl kicked off Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the temperature reached 54 degrees in Philadelphia on Super Sunday, 62 in Landover, Md., and 51 in Foxborough, Mass.

“Philly would be a great place to host it. It has everything,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said last week. “All the infrastructure, fourth largest city in the country, state of the art stadium and great fan base.”

“We want a Super Bowl here, we deserve a Super Bowl here,” Redskins owner Daniel Snyder said last fall.

Patriots owners Robert Kraft feels the same.

Woman helps others overcome eating disorders

dunland@shawmedia.com New Year’s resolutions have come and gone but Jena Morrow, 37, of Crest Hill and the alumni coordinator at Timberline Knolls in Lemont, feels that “lose weight and exercise more” resolutions are deadly any calendar month of the year to individuals battling eating disorders.

Instead, Morrow suggests seeking out better ways to love thyself – and others – in 2014.

It’s advice that Morrow also tries to follow, even though she has not relapsed since 2008.

That’s because Morrow is well aware of her triggers and their ability to overwhelm her. Determined not to succumb, Morrow repackages her triggers as reminders that she belongs to God and can still choose life.

“Whenever someone mentions losing weight, my ears prick up and instantly something very deep inside me wakes up,” Morrow said. “I have to intentionally talk to someone about it, text a friend, journal about it or pray about it. It reminds me of the big picture goal and what I don’t want to be anymore. It doesn’t take long before I’m anchored back to what I know to be true.”

Accustomed to hearing women express displeasure about their bodies, Morrow said she considered herself fat by age 3, which began a lifelong obsession about food and her weight. In college, when Morrow quickly shed 20 pounds, others noticed and insisted she get help.

Like others that struggle with eating disorders, Morrow’s journey to recovery was uphill and then down again. For Morrow, counseling alone didn’t cut it. Real breakthrough came through developing a relationship with Jesus Christ and with other Christians.

“I keep those people close to me,” Morrow said. “They strengthen me more than any self-help book ever could. I can only be good for so long. I need

Morrow began working at Timberline Knolls, a private women’s Christian treatment center, shortly after Moody Publishers released her memoir “Hollow” in 2010. After learning about Morrow’s book, Dr. Kim Dennis, CEO and medical director, hired Morrow as a behavior health specialist and one that could fulfill speaking engagements on behalf of the center “Morrow is passionate about recovery and her faith is core to her life. That is the approach we take here,” Dennis said. “Not everyone is a Christian but everyone has a spirit. If we’re not addressing the spirit in treatment, we’re failing our patients. Jena brings an awareness and vibrant spirituality to the work she does here.

Morrow organizes monthly events, moderates a private Facebook group with 1,250 active members, performs wellness checks and communicates by text or phone for anyone needing to talk or pray.

She revels in “amazing stories” and experiences, such as nine women in a group meeting tearfully rejoicing when one of their own, a socially isolated client, spoke up for the first time in her entire six months of treatment. Morrow was stunned when a former client tattooed Morrow’s pet phrase, “the only way out is through” on her wrist.

finished my Ph.D,’” Morrow said. “And then there is the flip side, the people that are still struggling on the emotional rollercoaster and need to be readmitted.”

Although Morrow loves her job to the extent she “can’t believe I’m getting paid to do it,” she recalls those early weeks of being immersed in

one horrific tale after another, feeling “sick and panicky” and “doubting God’s goodness,” not the best mindset when one has a son, Jaden, now 12, needing her at home.

“I’d get in the car and start crying and then I would cry all the way home. Thank God it was a 40-minute commute,” Morrow said. “I don’t know how people work in this field if they don’t know Jesus. By the time I’d gotten home, I’d had my cry and could switch gears and be a mom.”

That’s why Morrow still sees a Christian counselor.

“I can dump the stuff that happened all week and it’s not going anywhere,” Morrow said. “For some people, the place to vent is a best friend or an AA sponsor, but you really don’t want your friends

to be your advisers and I don’t want to bring all the ugliness I’ve seen all week into a women’s Bible study at church. My counselor is an amazing Christian woman that’s walked the faith road 25 years ahead of me. I can’t get that from a regular psychologist. I can look at someone who’s lived 60 faithful years and see the fruit of that.”

Struggling with poor selfworth fueled by slanted body image? Morrow advises taking baby steps toward self-love.

Drink more water. Get adequate sleep (“I’m not very good with that one,” Morrow admitted) and resolve to laugh every day this week.

“And make it a huge laugh,” Morrow said. “It’s impossible to hold negative thoughts in our brains if we are having belly laughs.”

Is it really good for the soul?

Supposedly, confession is good for the soul. But Peter De Vries, a novelist and an editor who died in 1993, said, “Confession is good for the soul only in the sense that a tweed coat is good for dandruff.”

Regardless, I will confess to an error in today’s deal. Look at the South hand. You open one spade and partner raises to two spades. What would you do now?

I was in Phoenix for the Fall North American Championships, playing for a few hours with friends. North was Eddie Kantar, a two-time world champion and an excellent teacher and author. We were playing against Eddie’s wife, Yvonne, and Vinita Gupta, who was fresh from winning the Baze Senior Knockout Teams, her first national title.

When Kantar raised to two spades, I thought I would keep my heart suit hidden, so jumped to four spades. Error!

Gupta led the diamond six.

I put in dummy’s 10 and ruffed East’s queen. Then I led my low club, but West, who could see three major-suit winners, went in with her ace and shifted to a low spade. I had to lose two spades, one heart and one club.

If I had sensibly rebid three hearts, North would have raised to four hearts. Then, it is true, I might have bid again, because North could have held, for example, king-third of spades and king-fifth of hearts, when six hearts would have been excellent. But we would have stopped in five hearts. Then, after I drove out the club ace, cashed the heart ace, and discarded two spades on the king-queen of clubs, a spade-diamond crossruff would have produced 11 tricks.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips vide a more intimate setting. My husband feels bad about it, and I don’t want him to quit a group he enjoys. Any suggestions? – Good Little Vegas Wife Dear Good Little Wife: It appears the founder of the clubs has his head stuck firmly in the 1950s.

And while we can’t change that, I do have some suggestions.

The first is that the wives stop preparing anything and let the “bachelors” do it themselves or order takeout or deli for their meetings. The second is that the “widows” join together for an evening of fun while the men are having their meetings. Of course, nothing that happens during these ladies’ evenings of fun should be shared with the husbands – including what they did or what clubs they may have visited.

P.S. Because your husband feels bad about how the women

are being treated, perhaps he should consider attending only the breakfast get-togethers and seeing those men in the evening group he has bonded with independently.

Dear Abby: My girlfriend loses her keys, wallet, credit cards or iPad every day. I have suggested ways to avoid losing her keys, but she doesn’t do it.

She has now become resentful that I have become impatient about it. I’m frustrated because this is something that can easily be fixed. What can I do? – Beyond Frustrated In L.A. Dear Beyond Frustrated: The first thing you should do is understand that your girlfriend isn’t doing this to upset you, and it’s possible that she becomes as upset as you do when it happens. While I agree that part of the problem is that she’s disorganized, it could also be that her thinking is scattered.

Some pain relievers may cause hearing loss Dear Doctor K: I saw my doctor for some problems with my hearing. Why did she want a detailed list of my medications?

Dear Reader: When you think of risk factors for hearing loss, medications probably aren’t at the top of the list. But several over-the-counter and prescription drugs can harm the nerves in the inner ear. This can cause sudden hearing loss, ringing in the ears or vertigo (dizziness).

Two studies done by colleagues at Harvard Medical School suggest that frequent use of even the most common pain relievers – ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) – may cause hearing loss. In the studies, women who took the pain relievers at least twice a week were more likely to have hearing loss. More frequent usage further increased the risk.

It’s possible that pain relievers damage the cochlea, the snailshaped hearing mechanism in your inner ear. One author of the studies, Dr. Sharon Curhan, instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School, explained that ibuprofen can reduce blood flow to the cochlea. This could cause cell damage and death.

And acetaminophen may deplete an antioxidant that protects the

Does this mean you should think twice before popping a pill for a headache or back pain? As always, it’s important to balance risks and benefits. These medicines do provide good pain relief for many people. With short courses of over-the-counter drugs, any hearing problems that might develop likely would be temporary. Ringing in the ears and vertigo also fade over time. Longer courses of prescription drugs (high-dose ibuprofen) would seem to be more likely to lead to permanent changes in hearing.

Pain relievers are not the only drugs that can affect hearing. Other commonly used drugs that can cause hearing loss include certain antibiotics, diuretics, and drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Aspirin is a problem only when it’s taken too often or in too high a dose.

As I’ve said before, take all medications mindfully. Always try to take the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount of time to minimize the risk of side

effects.

Studies like those I discuss above don’t prove that ibuprofen and acetaminophen cause hearing loss. For example, it could be that some other unrecognized illness caused study participants’ hearing loss and caused them pain – which then prompted them to take pain relievers.

Sometimes I get letters from readers who ask why I mention studies that suggest, but don’t prove, that a particular practice may have health risks. My answer is that I generally don’t mention such studies unless I think they are particularly strong scientifically.

Unfortunately, very few medical studies come to definitive answers. It usually takes many studies before a possible health threat is considered proven. But I also keep my eye on studies that don’t offer absolute proof but are strong enough to make me think twice – in this case, about the bedtime acetaminophen I take to relieve some arthritis pain.

Dr. Wallace: I disagree with your advice to parents that they should not tell a teenager “because I said so” when they want to know why they can’t do something. My children know that I am the boss and in control, so they will get put on restriction if they argue.

“Because I said so,” is very effective for me because they know the consequences. – Mom in Ashville, N.C. Dear Mom: I truly believe that parents are the boss and need to maintain control of their children, but I also know there are many ways to be an effective parent. Although the “Because I said so” philosophy works with your children on the immediate level, they miss the benefit of your reasoning, and therefore, a chance to learn.

It sounds like it is your method of last resort when you’re too tired or impatient to explain yourself further.

For example, when your daughter asks if she can go to the mall with friends and you tell her no, she asks why.

You answer, “Because I said so.” Her friend Mindy asks her mother the same question, and the answer is also no.

But her mother explains that the mall is not a good place to hang out because it isn’t fair to the shops in the mall to have a bunch of teens milling about with very little money to spend.

Neither teen is permitted to go to the mall, but I feel that Mindy can deal with the disappointment better than your daughter. She realizes her mother respects her enough to explain her reasoning, and she knows the decision is not an arbitrary one.

Open communication between parent and teen is vital to a trusting relationship.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Dr. Wallace: I have been dating this guy for about four months, and we like each other very much. The problem is that he is never on time either to pick me up or to get me home on time.

He seems to be totally unorganized. My curfew on the weekend is 11:30 p.m., but he keeps bringing me home 15-30 minutes late (three of the last four dates) and my parents are very upset about this. This is a very serious situation because my parents have grounded me for two weeks. How can I make sure my boyfriend is more responsible? – Lauren, Portage, Ind. Dear Lauren: It’s easy to blame your boyfriend (especially since he is “totally unorganized”) for missing your curfew three times. But it is your curfew, and you are responsible for getting home on time, not your boyfriend. You have a wristwatch and you know the curfew time.

If for some reason he is ignoring your request to get you home on time, then you should refuse to go out with him.

Before your next date, have a chat with him and explain that you intend to be home by 11:30 p.m. and not a second later, or you will not go out with him again. When it nears time to head for home, remind him of the curfew and that you will be on restriction and not be able to go out with him if he doesn’t get you home on time.

Make sure he knows that if you do go out with him again that he will be on “curfew probation.”

Dear Abby: My husband and I live in a 55-plus retirement community. We do many things together, but we also do things independently. One resident decided to form two men’s clubs. One meets every week for breakfast, and the other twice a month at night. The members go to each other’s homes for the evening meetings.

Abby, the man who started these clubs is chauvinistic. He made a rule that women are not allowed in their own homes when their husbands host a meeting – “no skirts allowed.” Therefore, even though the wife prepares everything for her husband’s meeting, she’s told to slip out of the house before anyone arrives.

My husband agrees that this is ridiculous and is considering quitting the club, but he has formed friendships with some of the men. The guys are bamboozled by the leader and tell their wives that anything said at a meeting is “confidential.”

The obvious solution would be to meet at a coffee shop, but the man in charge says the homes pro-

Philip Seymour Hoffman, an actor of moments big and small

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Philip Seymour Hoffman wasn’t a movie star in the conventional sense of the term. He wasn’t glamorous or given to the kind of serial-dating, motorcycle-riding, scene-making “lifestyle” that encourages fans to think they know all about you. Rather than a manufactured persona, filmgoers who mourn the 46-year-old actor’s death Sunday are remembering moments – those ineluctable instances in which Hoffman fused “being” and “seeming,” to create textbook examples of acting at its very best.

For most people, those moments occurred in movies by Paul Thomas Anderson, the filmmaker who brought Hoffman to national prominence in his 1997 disco-porno masterpiece, “Boogie Nights,” but who had cast the actor earlier in Anderson’s feature debut, “Hard Eight.” In 2006, Hoffman won a completely deserved Oscar for his lead performance in “Capote,” an alert, gratifyingly un-schticky reanimation of the author of “In Cold Blood.”

Great Hoffman moments, all. But for so many bravura star turns there are countless, equally electrifying, examples in smaller movies, from his beleaguered son of an abusive father in “The Savages” to his obsessive theater director in Charlie Kaufman’s gnarly art-imitates-life-imitates-art head-trip, “Synecdoche, New York.”

That Hoffman died amid talk of a drug overdose – law enforcement sources said that a syringe was found in his arm and that there were apparent signs of heroin use in the New York apartment where he died – will no doubt invite the inevitable talk of an artist and his demons. But filmgoers are reminded first of that artistry.

With his adamantly untoned physique, strawberry-blond hair and pallid complexion, Hoffman was no one’s idea of a matinee idol. He was, instead, a character actor, that yeoman laborer of filmdom who, without a pre-packaged image to protect, can be relied on to sacrifice vanity and shun mass adoration

American actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his Manhattan apartment Feb. 2. in the service of total immersion into a role. In Hoffman’s case, that meant paunchy, rheumy-eyed regular guys and vulnerable losers whose desperate search for connection so often mirrored his audience’s own shabby, shameful, unphotogenic lives.

The last few years of the actor’s career neatly summed up all that he was capable of: In the 2010 film “Jack Goes Boating,” which marked Hoffman’s directorial debut, he personified a sad-sack, anonymous striver not as a caricature but as a man of quiet courage and tenderness. The next year, he proved just as adroit playing a tough, politics-ain’t-beanbag political adviser in George Clooney’s Washington thriller, “The Ides of March” – which was released within weeks of “Moneyball,” in which Hoffman not only brought rumpled deadpan humor to Oakland A’s manager Art Howe but also helped make Brad Pitt more credible in a similar role.

And 2012 saw similar, seemingly effortless spins-on-a-dime: No sooner had Hoffman delivered a galvanizing,

blow-the-doors-off turn as self-deluded cult leader Lancaster Dodd in Anderson’s “The Master” than he appeared, altogether credibly, as a violinist in the soft-spoken chamber-music melodrama “A Late Quartet.” So went the pattern of Hoffman’s singular career, all the more exceptional for being so un-showy.

Rarely has an actor so consistently elevated the material he worked with, regardless of genre, budget, aesthetic merit or box-office throw-weight.

There will be talk that is the latest in a depressingly long line of actors who have succumbed to substance abuse.

The same rhetoric swirled around Heath Ledger when he died in 2008, and Cory Monteith upon his death last July.

That people blessed with such prodigious gifts can also be so tortured, we assume, has something to do with the price of genius. There must be a mystical karmic balance in which the sensitivity it takes to be a professional empath – someone willing to take the psychic, emotional and even physical risks necessary to shape-shift into another individual, over and over again – leads them to seek numbness, whether to quiet the voices in their heads, heal their primal wounds or help the sensory and creative juices to flow with more Rabelaisian ferocity.

It’s a romantic thought, and one that allows admirers of great artists to speak of their loss with compassion, as well as respect for their profound talents. But rhetoric of artistic demons obscures what is, in reality, simply a crippling, fatal disease – of which Hoffman is the latest famous casualty and which affects millions of people far outside the creative confines of Manhattan and Hollywood.

Whatever language we use, though, doesn’t obscure the fact that a superbly talented actor – one capable of bringing so many truths to messy, complicated, ultimately sympathetic life – has been silenced forever. To paraphrase an exchange between Billy Wilder and William Wyler at Ernst Lubitsch’s funeral: We’ve not only lost Philip Seymour Hoffman, we’ve lost all those Hoffman moments that might have been.
