JOLIET – A brew pub could open in Union Station later this year, the city’s economic development director said Tuesday.

A lease agreement with the prospective brew pub business should go to the City Council in the next 30 days, said Steve Jones, deputy city manager/economic development director for Joliet.

“I think their goal is to be in business during the warm weather months of 2016,” Jones said.

Jones provided an update on the brew pub project after a meeting in which the City Council approved changes in the liquor code and zoning ordinance to accommodate a microbrewery in the downtown business district.

The city has not released the name of the investor in the project while it continues to negotiate the lease agreement on Union Station. Jones said the name will be released when the lease agreement goes to the council for approval.

Contractors and architects for the brew pub have been in Union Station at least four times and were there again Tuesday to work on plans for the project, Jones said.

Union Station was the city’s hub for train traffic from 1912 until 2014, when the city moved commuter boarding platforms to the other side of the tracks as it prepares to build a new station.

The brew pub would occupy a former restaurant area on the north end of the building, as well as the former Amtrak office and other space on the first floor.

Efficiency study

The council on Tuesday also approved a consultant to do an efficiency study of the Utilities Department.

Matrix Consulting Group was awarded a contract not to exceed $54,700 to examine department operations.

The study was suggested in September when Utilities Director James Eggen sought increases in water and sewer rates to fund annual operations as well as the costs of replacing aging water and sewer lines. Council members said they wanted an efficiency study before approving rate increases.

Councilman James McFarland, chairman of the Public Services Committee, told fellow council members that they can expect to be interviewed by the Matrix group as part of the study.

Matrix also will tour facilities, review organizational structure and evaluate staffing, work practices and service, according to the council memo describing the contract.

Joliet Township bid focused new attention on Bicentennial Park

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Township Supervisor Dan Vera’s decision to back away from a deal for Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park leaves the city with some decisions of its own to make.

Vera’s pitch for township control of the park stirred up opponents, who said the historic location should remain in the hands of the city. But it also focused attention on the decline of park activity from pre-recession years and the need for better upkeep.

One of the first questions asked of City Manager Jim Hock after he announced Vera’s decision at the City Council meeting Monday was whether the city had budgeted money to continue running the park this year.

Hock assured the council that not only is there money in the budget, but there’s enough to hire a park supervisor. The position has been vacant for months. Hock said he will fill the position.

“At this point in time, it looks like the city will continue support and ownership of the park and move forward,” Hock said.

Bicentennial Park still is an active place with community theater, summertime concerts and occasional events such as Family Fiesta, a three-day, outdoor fundraiser for the Spanish Community Center.

But Vera said he wanted to stage major events, such as were held during the pre-recession years when the park hosted a car show on Father’s Day weekend, fireworks on July 3, a Waterway Daze boat festival that took advantage of the riverside location and a Pumpkinfest in the fall.

“We had envisioned new events and programs to add to the established calendar,” Vera said in a Jan. 29 letter announcing he was withdrawing the township’s proposal.

Vera said the township had “verbal commitments” from four corporate sponsors for “three new events planned for the 2016 season.”

city should talk with Vera about those potential sponsors to see whether it would still be possible to add events at the park.

But Vera’s letter also noted problems at the park that could cost the city money.

The city had given the township permission to bring contractors into the park to inspect conditions.

“Several critical health safety repairs and needed improvements were identified,” Vera said in his letter, noting roof problems, electrical issues and broken concrete.

He also noted that the city is aware of the need for repairs.

The $431,000 Bicentennial Park budget includes $60,000 for repairs. In 2015, the city budgeted $160,000 for repairs but only spent $5,000.

Hock, however, said he does not know the extent of repairs needed at the park and will look toward the township inspections to provide guidance.

“I am going to rely somewhat on what his inspection reports say,” Hock said. “I have no idea what the costs will be.”

Pace, Plainfield optimistic about long-term parking solution

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield resident Nicole Arnold heard there were parking issues at the Plainfield Pace stop before she started four months ago taking the Route 855 bus from there to Chicago.

But she was surprised when she made her first commute.

“I didn’t even know there was going to be a line,” Arnold said Tuesday morning.

Arnold, along with other commuters, parks along Van Dyke Road or Ottawa Street in the residential area south of the bus stop, sometimes walking more than a quarter-mile to the stop.

“Usually, I’m cutting it close,” she said.

The Park-n-Ride stop, located southeast of the Van Dyke Road and Lockport Street intersection just west of Village Hall, serves Pace routes 755 and 855. Route 755 goes to the West Loop in Chicago, while the 855 heads to the East Loop.

The stop lacks its own parking lot.

Half of the Village Hall’s parking lot, almost 50 spots, is reserved for commuters. Dozens of additional spaces are reserved along Village Center Drive and Van Dyke Road.

That has become a problem as ridership on the routes increased almost six-fold in the past four years.

Pace and village officials have been working on a permanent solution to the issue, which likely will involve finding a new location for the stop.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy remembers the first commute five years ago when Pace opened the Plainfield stop.

“It was off to a rather inauspicious start,” Murphy said. “We had three whole riders that whole day.”

Since then, ridership has taken off, with latest counts at more than 350 people per day starting or ending in Plainfield.

At Monday’s Village Board meeting, Trustee Jim Racich talked about the effect commuters have on nearby residents living on and near Ottawa Street, and on visitors to the nearby C.W. Avery Family YMCA and Ira Jones Middle School.

narrow to begin with, and we have parking on the north side of Ottawa Street,” Racich said.

committee.

Plainfield resident Ali Ahmed has been parking in that area for the past six months. He has to walk across Settlers’ Park, but it’s a place he knows he can get parking.

Ahmed, who commutes on the 855, said he understands a ban on a narrow street. But he said commuters don’t cause much trouble.

“People park and leave,” Ahmed said. “No one is hanging over there.”

Murphy said while residents have complained about parking, commuters suggested adding a bathroom facility to use in the winter, when Settlers’ Park’s bathrooms are closed.

JJC Multipurpose Facility receives new name

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees approved a new name for the Multipurpose Facility at its Tuesday meeting.

The name of the facility will be the JJC Events Center.

JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said last fall the college conducted a public survey to ask people for ideas on what to officially name the building, which broke ground Aug. 25. College officials came back with the name JJC Events Center.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich, Vice Chairman Andrew Mihelich, along with Trustees Maureen Broderick, Patricia Deiters, Alicia Morales and Student Trustee Saleh Ruman voted in favor of the name.

Trustees Michael O’Connell and Daniel O’Connell were absent for the vote.

The JJC Events Center is a two-level building that will feature indoor basketball courts, athletic competition space, an indoor track, athletic staff office space and other amenities.

Herrera told trustees that DALE members will continue to promote support and resources available for

those students.

One goal for the organization is the creation of DREAM zones to help faculty and staff understand how to better serve undocumented students.

Another is DREAMer-to-DREAMer mentoring where the DALE group will collaborate with high schools, he said.

Mulvey reported to trustees that the current occupancy at Centennial Commons – the JJC student housing complex – is at 48 percent.

She said the Foundation LLC voted to accept students at Centennial Commons who participate in an eightweek program called Military Medic to Practical Nurse.

The Foundation LLC also is interested in working with JJC to bring international students to the college who will reside on campus, she said.

Mulvey also told trustees a new rent incentive program was shared with JJC faculty called “Fill The Flat,” which will give significant discount to students who get a group of four students together to sign a lease for a four-unit apartment.

The Foundation LLC also voted to not continue allowing students to defer their rent using Pell money starting in fall 2016, she said.

Oswego schools in agreement with development

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A proposal to build out a converted single-family home development at Ridge Road and 135th Street was approved for recommendation by the Plainfield Plan Commission on Tuesday after the Oswego park and school districts expressed no issues with the project.

The Playa Vista 321-unit residential development, which is in Kendall County and served by the Oswegoland Park District and Oswego School District 308, will be presented at a future village board meeting for approval.

The project, as approved in 2007, was originally a 407-unit age-restricted mixed ranch-style and townhome development targeted for the senior living community. But it coincided with the recession, and just one six-unit townhome

building and a couple of ranch-style homes were developed. Another change in 2012 turned the project into an age-targeted development.

In the most recent incarnation of the project, the developer, Hartz Construction Company, will keep the existing buildings, but relocate utilities on the development and repurpose the project to a total of 321 units, including 315 single-family homes and the six-unit townhome building.

“We’re happy to honor [the agreements with the school and park districts],” Hartz representative Mike Martin said.

The development received some push-back at a Jan. 19 meeting from plan commissioners, when it was delayed because of uncertainty about how the Oswego school and park districts feel about

Commissioner Andrew Heinen said parents in the Grande Park subdivision neighboring Playa Vista were worried the change in age targeting could cause more children to enroll in the school district, potentially forcing kids in newer Grande Park homes to ship out to another school rather than stay at Grande Park Elementary School.

So commissioners asked park and school district officials to come to Tuesday’s meeting.

No representatives from either district came, but both sent letters of understanding and agreement for the project.

According to the school district’s letter, Playa Vista children will go to Grande Park Elementary and Murphy Junior High schools and the district has enough capacity to serve them. Hartz would pay the school district a $3,000 impact fee per single-family unit.

A representative of the concerned parents, Cathy Crawford, was fine with the development. But she questioned the school district’s claims and said Grande Park Elementary is already reaching capacity.

The Oswegoland Park District wants a donation of 4 acres of park land to build children’s amenities so they don’t have to cross 135th Street into the Grande Park subdivision. Hartz agreed, and also will discuss building and donating a bike path to the park district.

Homer Glen lawyer-turned-defendant PLAINFIELD Downtown confronts informant who wore wire death appears

JOLIET – While Hollywood doesn’t get everything right, there’s a rhythm that’s as familiar to anyone with a TV set as it is to those who frequent actual courtrooms.

“Officer, do you recall ...,” “Doctor, could you form an opinion ...,” “Where do you live, Mr. Smith?” are all typical ways an attorney would address a witness on the stand.

But on Tuesday, Illinois River Correctional Center Inmate #N70134 was only addressed as “McDaniel.”

Throughout his time on the witness stand, Brian K. McDaniel was never called “Mister” or anything but his last name by the man he allegedly recorded trying to hire him as a hit man.

Robert Gold-Smith is a Homer Glen attorney who, according to prosecutors, approached McDaniel inside the Will County Jail in October 2012 to offer $5,000 to kill his former wife.

Gold-Smith, 53, who has been in the county jail since March 2011 on prior domestic violence charges, is

representing himself in a bench trial before Judge Daniel Rozak. GoldSmith also is facing charges of witness tampering for allegedly having a former client contact McDaniel in prison.

“McDaniel, you’ve been in [Will County] jail quite a bit,” Gold-Smith said.

“Yes, Robert,” McDaniel answered.

Gold-Smith has argued McDaniel agreed to wear a wire in the jail for detectives in exchange for leniency in his own case, but impersonated Gold-Smith’s whispering voice since he was already suspected of “being a snitch.”

When the recordings have been played in court, it seems McDaniel asks for and receives a piece of paper with Gold-Smith’s wife’s address on it. McDaniel testified he did not remember what happened to the piece of paper, nor was he given a phone number for Gold-Smith’s uncle, who he testified was supposed to pay him the $5,000.

Gold-Smith’s sister, Patty Rocco, also testified Tuesday and said she did not recognize the voice on the

recording as her brother’s when it was played for her three years ago by the Will County public defender’s office.

Will County sheriff’s detectives Jeff Grozik and Tony Policandriotes testified McDaniel’s conversations were recorded two different ways, but there was some static on one of the recordings.

Although McDaniel was expecting $100 in his jail commissary account and phone cards for making the recordings, the man who’s spent most of his life behind bars testified he received another reward from Policandriotes for helping with the investigation. “[Prison] food is terrible,” McDaniel said. “When I went to testify at the grand jury, he brought me a Whopper unsolicited for lunch. It was worth a million bucks to me because it tasted so good.”

McDaniel’s next opportunity to enjoy fast food should come in July when he is paroled from a five-year conviction for shoplifting.

Gold-Smith’s trial is set to continue Wednesday. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

bstanley@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Authorities believe the death of a woman whose body was found in a car stopped at a Plainfield intersection on Monday evening was self-inflicted.

“This is still an open death investigation, but we do not believe anyone else was involved or present,” Sgt. Mike Fisher said Tuesday.

At 6:02 p.m. Monday, traffic was stopped at Lockport Street and Van Dyke Road when drivers discovered the woman slumped in the driver’s seat of a white SUV at the intersection.

Police officers observed she had severe head trauma, Fisher said.

The woman was taken to Copley Hospital in Aurora where she was pronounced dead.

“This does not appear to be foul play and there is no danger to the public,” Fisher said.

JOLIET – Police say one man was armed when he and an accomplice tried mugging a man on a Joliet street Monday.

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said officers were on patrol about 11:40 a.m. when they saw what they believed was a fight between three men in the 400 block of Center Street in Joliet.

“When they got out of the car to investigate, two of the subjects took off running and the 50-year-old man who remained said the other two had been trying to rob him,” Gregory said.

One man fled to an alley leading to Carson Avenue before officers lost

sight of him, Gregory said. He was described as a black man with dreadlocks who was wearing a Bulls hat.

Gregory said police found the other suspect hiding behind a rock pile when a shot rang out.

“They told him to show his hands, but he ran again until he was captured in the 400 block of Plainfield Road,” Gregory said.

Police found a handgun near the rocks.

Tyler N. Grigsby, 18, of the 900 block of North Raynor Avenue, was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm, robbery and resisting arrest and booked into the Will County Jail.

JOLIET – The Will County Health Department hopes to curb high rates of teen births and sexually transmitted diseases in Bolingbrook with the help of a $181,132 grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services.

The grant will allow the health department to hire two full-time health educators and a third who is part time.

The educators will teach at schools using an evidence-based curriculum from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cindy Jackson, program manager at the department, told members of the Will County Finance Committee on Tuesday.

There was an average of 29.4 births for every 1,000 teenagers aged 15 to 19 in Bolingbrook between 2011 and 2013 – the latest figures available – according to Illinois Department of Public Health data.

That compares with 17.2 per 1,000 in Will County, 26.6 per 1,000 in the United States, and 30.01 per 1,000 in Illinois.

Rates of two STDs – chlamydia and gonorrhea – in Bolingbrook also are higher than the national average, according to state data.

The Finance Committee on Tuesday approved the allocation of funds for the teen pregnancy prevention program.

Five schools within Valley View School District 365U, which serves primarily Bolingbrook and Romeoville, are included in the initial rollout, but more communities may be added in future

years.

Nine other communities were awarded grant dollars to prevent teen pregnancies, including Dolton, Elmwood Park and Wheeling in Cook County; Addison, Glendale Heights and Hanover Park in DuPage County; Alton in Madison County; and Aurora and Carpentersville in Kane County.

In other news, Will County Board committees on Tuesday also: • Authorized the Will County executive to execute a $5.7 million contract to replace the county’s antiquated radio system with a new countywide system infrastructure. The new system will allow all county agencies, including animal control and the sheriff’s office, to communicate.

Harold Damron, director of the Will County Emergency Management Agency, told Finance Committee members Tuesday the contract – to be paid out over three years – does not include hand-held devices and other equipment.

That cost, estimated at about $10 million, still is being negotiated.

• Approved the awarding of a $1.6 million contract to Montgomery-based Lite Construction for fifth-floor remodeling of the court annex for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

• Authorized the Will County Public Building Commission to competitively procure and manage exterior concrete restoration work at the Will County Courthouse.

All matters still require approval by the full Will County Board, which meets later this month.

JOLIET – The Will County Board Public Works and Transportation Committee voted 5-1 on Tuesday to proceed with condemnation cases against three property owners affected by a bridge reconstruction and widening project along Cedar Road in Homer Township.

County Highway Engineer Bruce Gould told the committee Tuesday the bridge reconstruction project includes widening to accommodate future expansion of Cedar Road. The project is in the county’s long-range transportation plan.

The full Will County Board would have to sign off on the possible emi-

nent domain lawsuit. As required by law, the Highway Department earlier this month sent the property owners a 60-day notice letter acknowledging the department’s intent to file an eminent domain lawsuit if an agreement can’t amicably be reached.

Diana Petersen, 73, who lives near the project site just east of Cedar Road and just south of Spring Creek, attended the Tuesday meeting. She said she’s concerned about what the road-widening project means for residential properties to the east of Cedar Road, including her own, once the road is widened from two to four or five lanes.

After the meeting, she said she plans to challenge the county if officials file an eminent domain lawsuit.

TINLEY PARK – Eight years after five women were found shot to death inside a Lane Bryant clothing store in Tinley Park, police say they believe there are people out there who know the killer’s identity and will come forward to help them solve the case.

Since the slayings on Feb. 2, 2008, investigators with the Tinley Park Police Department have received nearly 7,000 leads, and they still continue to regularly get tips.

“I firmly believe there is a small number of people aside from the offender who know who the offender is,” said detective Ray Violetto, a 17-year veteran with the department who’s been involved with the investigation almost from the beginning.

Family members such as Maurice Hamilton, who lost his sister, Rhoda McFarland, say they still have hope that the man responsible will be found. Hamilton tells the Daily Southtown that “it’s not frustrating” that so much time has passed without an arrest.

The victims’ families hope that “someday, somebody will step up to the

McFarland was the store manager, who wasn’t scheduled to work that day but stopped in to help get ready for an upcoming clearance sale, and the four other victims were customers.

A sixth woman, also an employee, suffered a gunshot wound but survived and was able to provide a description of the shooter. Her identity hasn’t been released for her protection.

Early in the case, police said that a “very large amount” of evidence was taken from the scene and sent to Illinois State Police crime lab for examination. The “majority” of evidence has been studied, Violetto said, but “we did not receive the results we hoped we would.”

Violetto said the goal in any case is closure, not just for those working on the investigation, but also for the victim and his or her family.

“You always have closure in a case,” Violetto said. “We haven’t been able to provide them [families of victims] any closure in this case.”

A $100,000 reward, most of which was provided by the parent company of Lane Bryant, is being offered in the case.

Teens lead Channahon Village Board meeting

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – This week’s Channahon Village Board meeting was a short one, but it was led by a group of 10 Channahon Junior High School students.

The Future Leaders of Channahon, as they were dubbed, were Student Council officers who job-shadowed the mayor and village staff earlier in the afternoon and sat at the dais that evening, side-by-side with village trustees.

They even wrote, voted on and approved their own proclamation, making Feb. 1, 2016, Village of Channahon Job Shadowing Day. As Student Council president, Dominic Alberico served as village president, alongside President Missey Moorman Schumacher, and led the meeting. Elected trustees did vote on the remainder of official business that night.

Both students and trustees questioned Steve Rauter, executive director of WESCOM, or Western Will County Communication Center, when the issue of digital police radios was raised.

WESCOM is a special unit of local government that runs dispatch functions for more than 20 area fire, law enforcement and emergency management agencies in Will, Grundy, DuPage and Kendall counties, including in Channahon.

The Channahon Police Department is considering upgrading its police radios from analog to digital, Police Chief Jeff Wold said. The cost will be considerable, Wold said at a previous meeting, but the reception of the current radios has not been ideal since the officers’ radio band was cut in half. The radio discussions are preliminary, and specific cost estimates have not yet been

discussed.

This week, Rauter said WESCOM’s agencies use analog radios, but are gearing up to go digital. The price on digital is coming down and the price of using analog continues to rise.

“Phone companies are encouraging us to get rid of analog by raising our rates 267 percent the last five years,” Rauter said.

Going digital would mean better tracking of patrol officers, Rauter said, as the radios have built-in GPS software. They can also send and receive short text messages.

WESCOM’s new Plainfield building, constructed in 2014, has the capacity to take on the new digital technology, Rauter added, with a spacious console system that would be used if WESCOM went digital.

“Our building is very much equipped for 20 years,” he told the board.

Channahon trustees could vote on buying digital radios for officers at a future meeting.

Also Monday, Community Development Director Mike Petrick announced a public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 8 for the Planning and Zoning Commission to discuss the senior housing project planned for the Town Center area. The project, now called St. Elizabeth Residences, is being designed by a developer for Catholic Charities.

The plans so far are for four, three-story buildings that will each contain 12 apartments for seniors of modest income. Monthly rents on the oneand two-bedroom units could range from $350 to $850, and the developer has estimated more than 25 percent of the residents will likely receive financial assistance.

Plans are for some of the apartments to be set aside for those with sensory impairments and disabilities.

HOMER GLEN – The village of Homer Glen’s Parks and Recreation Committee is seeking suggestions for the naming of the village park property formerly known as the Woodbine Golf Course, according to a village news release.

Through Feb. 21, Homer Glen residents can submit a name suggestion, along with a brief explanation in support of the name, via an electronic form on the village’s website, www.homerglenil.org. Submission forms also will be available at the Village Hall, 14933 S. Founders Crossing.

The committee is holding a contest for the students of Homer and Oak Prairie junior high schools to submit a name suggestion for the property.

Students at the two schools will submit a name suggestion to their

teacher, along with an explanation supporting the name.

The name must be based on one of the following topics: • Land features or purpose of the park.

• U.S. presidents or significant historical events.

• Any person or organization that has significantly contributed in support, advancement or improvement of the quality of life for Homer Glen residents.

• Any person who has made a significant contribution in support of the mission of the state or national park system, preservation of natural resources or recreation activities.

• Recognition of a charitable donation or promotional sponsorship.

The property may not be named after a public official currently holding office.

Robert George Barto, age 80, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Born March 24, 1935, in Joliet, to Lawrence and Lucille (nee Rippinger) Barto. A member of South Wilmington Sportsman Club who loved camping, fishing and woodworking. Truly a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a wonderful personality with a big heart and loved everyone.

Survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen L. (nee Weese); three children, Patricia Seida, Cynthia (Eugene) Martin and George Barto; four grandchildren, Lisa (Tim) Singer, Aaron Martin USAF, Heather (Curtis) Cwudzinski and Kyle Martin; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Kennedy, Emma Singer and Carson Cwudzinski; brother, William (Joan) Barto; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

Wally loved the land. He was a lifelong farmer and member of the Will County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Coyote Moon Dancers, Kingsway Kickers and Heartland Dancers. A lifelong member of St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Plainfield, Wally was the lead usher of the 7:30 a.m. Mass for many, many years.

He was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus Good Shepherd Council #5573 and a longtime member of the Joliet Moose Lodge. For many years, Wally also enjoyed working at Buikema’s Ace Hardware in Naperville.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff of Rosewood Care Center and Joliet Area Community Hospice for the loving care shown to Wally and his family.

John was born May 18, 1991, in Oak Lawn, graduated from Plainfield South High School and worked as a carpenter.

A great son, brother and godfather, John was a caring, fun-loving person with a great sense of humor. He liked fishing, playing hockey and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He played hockey for 10 years for the Joliet Jaguars and Plainfield High School Hockey Association.

Surviving are his brother, William (Amanda) Boyle of Joliet; his father, Gary Majewski of Plainfield, his soulmate, Monique Armstrong; his unborn daughter, Kinsley Burns; and many cousins and friends.

One of his greatest loves in life, other than spending time with family and friends, was being out on the open road riding his Harley-Davidson.

Elvira A. Hogan, 69, passed away on Jan. 31, 2016, in Norton, OH. Ellie was born in Michigan City, IN, on Feb. 24, 1946.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago, she married the late Dr. Philip Hogan. She raised two sons, Terry and Kevin, and later returned to school at Lewis University, where she attained an MBA and CPA. She was passionate about governmental finances and worked as the finance director in various places, such as Romeoville, Villa Park and Peoria.

In her retirement, she volunteered her time at many charities, including the AARP Foundation Tax Aide and the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank. She was a beloved grandmother of five grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, hiking, gardening, cooking and traveling.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Philip; parents, Marion and Eugene; and son, Terrence Eugene I. She is survived by her sons, Terry (Shelly) and Kevin (Christa); grandchildren, Ryan, Evan, Ailee, Caden and Owen; and brothers, Eugene and Robert (Linda) Meyer.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, Raymond Jakovich (2000); and a daughter, Mary Therese, in infancy; her parents, Martin and Helen (Stukel) Mutz; seven brothers, Frank, Martin, Joseph (Ann), Max, Edward (Lucille), John (Ann), James (Helen); and six sisters, Helen, Mary, Victoria (Anthony) Buchar, Frances (Francis) Zelesnik, Bernadine (Raymond) Meader, and Irene (William) Stark.

She is survived by three daughters, Jane (Ronald) Kohl, Ellen Jakovich and Mary Kay Jakovich (Frank Masterson); two granddaughters, Rachel (Rick Mitchell), and Renee (Kevin Delaney) Kohl; two sisters-in-law, Agnes (late Fred) Horvat and Mary (late Robert) Jakovich.

Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Vida was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church of Joliet, member of the Rosarians, Altar and Rosary Society, Ladies Auxiliary VFW, KSKJ and as a young woman was a member of the Slovenian Choir at St. Joseph Church.

Vida’s hobbies included sewing and baking, she was well known for her potica and apple strudel.

Rauner: Rule change can save $514M The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner and the state’s comptroller highlighted Illinois’ worsening finances due to the budget deadlock Tuesday as the Republican governor unveiled a plan he said would save money by changing how goods and services are bought.

Rauner is urging lawmakers to pass legislation he said will reduce the time it takes to buy products by eliminating redundant steps in the procurement process. He estimates the state could save $514 million a year that can be used for colleges and human service programs.

“All of which I, as governor, would

like to fund. We don’t have the money today, and we haven’t frankly had the money for a long time. We need reform to save taxpayer money,” he said.

Rauner’s announcement Tuesday came on a day when he and Leslie Munger, a Republican he appointed as comptroller after the Bruce death of predecessor Rauner Judy Baar Topinka, highlighted Illinois’ worsening financial shape as the state enters the eighth month without a budget. Munger says the state is on pace to finish the fiscal year $6.2 billion further in debt because

of court-ordered spending, other required appropriations and a drop in the income tax rate.

“Without a budget, the spending is open-ended and our fiscal path is catastrophic,” Munger said in a statement.

Munger said state spending will outpace last year’s rates by $1.2 billion. Factoring in the $5 billion in revenue lost when the individual income tax rate dropped last year from 5 percent to 3.75 percent brings the deficit to $6.2 billion.

The comptroller’s projection Tuesday was top of the state’s roughly $7 billion backlog in unpaid bills and the worst-funded pension system in the nation with about $111 billion in unfunded liability.

“We are in a cash crunch,” Rauner said, pitching his plan to overhaul the state procurement system. The pending legislation would allow state agencies to have a “pre-qualified pool of vendors” for various supplies and services so officials don’t have to go through the same steps every time goods are purchased.

Rauner also wants Illinois to be able to join a contract that another state has in place in some cases to speed up the process. At the same time, the proposal would create a preference for buying from Illinois businesses.

But with Rauner locked in a bitter budget dispute with Democrats controlling the Legislature, it’s unclear how far his plan will go.

Joseph James Pasdertz Jr., age 24, of Verona, was taken too soon and unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Born May 26, 1991, in Joliet. Joe was currently a student at Joliet Junior College. He had a great love for hockey and had played for the Joliet Jaquars Hockey Club and Providence High School. Joe an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan. He was a loving family member and loyal friend who enjoyed hanging out with his brothers and going to the gym.

He was also an active member of the recovery community.

Surviving are his loving parents, Joseph and Danette (nee Strong) Pasdertz; two brothers, Brandon Pasdertz and Christopher “C.J.” Pasdertz, both of Verona; grandparents, Randy and Donna (nee Ryan) Strong; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS NASHUA, N.H. – Hillary Clinton tried to turn a skin-of-her-teeth victory in Iowa into a bit of momentum for her battered Democratic campaign, and Ted Cruz sought to lock in his spot at the top of the Republican field as the presidential candidates packed up Tuesday and sped to New Hampshire.

The contenders descended on the Granite State – along with scores of volunteers and staff – and quickly scattered for a blitz of campaign rallies and television interviews. Some sought to capitalize on the results of the Iowa caucuses, while others looked to put the best face on poor showings as they settled in for the Feb. 9 New Hampshire primary and beyond.

Clinton celebrated her narrow win in the leadoff caucuses and said she expected a tough fight in New Hampshire, noting she’ll be campaigning in the “backyard” of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, where he has been running strong for weeks.

Sanders celebrated his stronger-than-expected showing in Iowa, landing at dawn in Bow and addressing a hardy group of supporters who met him. “We’re in this for the long haul,” he told reporters as his plane flew

through the night to the season’s second showdown.

Indeed, the once-unthinkably-small margin between the former first lady, senator and secretary of state over the self-declared democratic socialist suggested the Democratic contest is headed toward a protracted fight between the party’s pragmatic and progressive wings.

Clinton defeated Sanders by less than threetenths of 1 percent, the closest in Iowa Democratic caucus history, the state party said.

Sanders said his campaign was still reviewing the results and did not concede.

On the Republican side, Cruz’s win in Iowa provided a twist worthy of the topsy-turvy race. The Texas senator proved to be beloved by evangelicals, even if maligned by many others in his party, and adept at mounting a powerful grass-roots operation. Donald Trump’s second-place finish was a humbling blow to the boastful mogul who had dominated the polls for weeks. Coming in a close third, Marco Rubio was catapulted to the top of heap of establishment candidates vying to be the party’s preferred alternative to Trump or Cruz.

For Republicans, the pivot to New Hampshire meant the still-crowded cast of candidates has turned toward a less religious and mostly undecided electorate.

Obama, GOP seek common ground

WASHINGTON – Can President Barack Obama and Republicans put aside years of ill will to secure a few big breakthroughs in Obama’s final year? Don’t get your hopes up.

There were scant signs of consensus Tuesday as Obama met at the White House with GOP leaders of the House and Senate, hoping to find common ground on trade, drug abuse and criminal justice reform.

While both sides professed a Paul Ryan general interest in working together, the deep ideological gulf between them seemed wider than ever.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appeared content to simply wait this president out, hoping a Republican successor will give the GOP the full deck it needs to press its priorities unimpeded.

“The days of Barack Obama’s presidency are numbered,” Ryan said before the meeting.

Ryan and Obama also had a private lunch,

their first since the congressman became speaker in October with a mandate to unite an unruly cast of House Republicans whose prime point of agreement is that Obama’s agenda must be stopped.

Obama and McConnell have ridden this merry-go-round before, striking big deals occasionally, but more often not.

Illustrating how hard Republicans were still fighting Obama’s agenda seven years in, the House held its umpteenth vote Tuesday evening to repeal his health care law, trying but failing to override Obama’s veto.

Still, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama was pleased to host the leaders, calling it a sign that despite heated partisanship in an election year, Democrats and Republicans can have a good-faith conversation about the country’s priorities.

“It’s not treasonous to do that,” Earnest said. “In fact, it’s part of the responsibility that goes along with leadership.”

Ryan, speaking after the weekly GOP caucus, said he hoped he and Obama could “put those disagreements in check and see where the common ground is.”

What price victory?

Casualties mount

Politics have often been compared to war.

In that vein, the ongoing Illinois budgetary battle could be compared to trench warfare.

Neither Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner nor the Democratic-controlled Legislature, led by House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, are strong enough to overpower the other side.

For seven months now, the warring parties have stuck to their trenches, lobbed verbal grenades at each other, and stayed frozen to their positions – Rauner calling for enactment of his so-called turnaround agenda before he’ll talk about raising taxes to balance the budget, with Madigan and Cullerton calling for higher revenue and an approved budget first, before Rauner’s reforms are addressed.

In war, innocent bystanders often find themselves in the line of fire.

While they are not combatants, they still suffer.

The same holds true for Illinoisans caught in the middle of the state budget impasse, whether they be students, senior citizens, the poor, those with disabilities or others.

The collateral damage rose dramatically last week when Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, suffering from the lack of state financial support, announced a drastic move.

LSSI is closing more than 30 programs across the state and laying off 43 percent of its staff, all because the state, lacking a budget since July 1, has failed to reimburse it for the services it provides to children, students, families and the elderly.

The collateral damage toll?

Statewide, 4,700 people will lose services provided by LSSI. In addition, 750 employees will lose their jobs.

In warfare, military leaders might be removed for incompetence or dereliction of duty. In political wars, elections serve that purpose – except that this is Illinois, where politicians gerrymander themselves into districts that protect them from voter retribution.

Will the “troops” in this political war – our state lawmakers – do anything to stop the collateral damage?

As casualties mount in this political war, what further price must be paid by innocent bystanders?

Illinois politicians are bad-check writers SPRINGFIELD – I have never understood people who will deliberately write a bad check.

Please note I said deliberately.

Folks occasionally make a mistake and overdraft a checking account.

That’s when you look at the overdraft fee, sigh and pay what you owe.

But there is a shameless segment that will deliberately write bad checks, hand them to merchants and skedaddle.

My parents were small-business people for decades, and I would routinely hear them discuss these financial miscreants at the dinner table while I was growing up.

My mother, who did the books, would sigh and say, “This is the second time his check wouldn’t clear; I called him and would you believe he tried to blame the bank? The bank didn’t write the check, he did.”

Years later, when I covered criminal courts in Galveston, Texas, a prosecutor friend told me bad-check writers were the criminals most likely to repeat their crimes.

Not burglars. Not drunken drivers.

Not murderers.

It’s the bad-check writer you’ve got to keep your eye on.

“Once someone gets it in their head that you can just write on a little piece of paper and have all the money

In Springfield, we have a name for bad-check writers: politicians.

Just this past week, they were out posing, preening and voting to spend $721 million the state doesn’t have.

The state is flat broke.

Illinois has an unfunded pension liability of $113 billion, the biggest in the nation.

It has worst credit rating of the 50 states.

And we are seven months into a fiscal year without a state budget.

Last spring, Democrat majorities in the Legislature passed a budget that was $4 billion out of whack.

Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed it and challenged the General Assembly to come back with a balanced budget.

They haven’t. Instead, their leaders want to raise our taxes.

Rauner said he won’t go along with higher taxes unless the Legislature passes fundamental political and economic reforms.

House Speaker Mike Madigan has thumbed his nose at this idea, and the

state now sits at an impasse.

Even without a budget, with court-ordered spending, consent decrees and continued appropriations, the state has racked up billions of dollars in unpaid bills.

The Legislature’s latest response?

Spend $721 million more for the MAP grant program and community colleges.

It’s a well-intentioned program, and thousands of college kids are anxious for the help.

But the General Assembly’s written them a bad check.

Everyone in the General Assembly knows the state doesn’t have the money to pay for the program, but majorities in both houses voted to spend the money nonetheless.

It was a cynical fraud perpetuated on college students and taxpayers alike.

The money just isn’t there. That’s the reason Rauner will veto the measure. And what will legislative Democrats do? They’ll blame the bank.

Bad-check writing is a hard habit to break.

However, it was a different story for visiting Thornwood in Tuesday night’s SouthWest Suburban Red battle.

Koszela’s teammates kept finding him around the basket. The Thunderbolts lost him a few too many times, especially in the second half.

Koszela scored 20 of his 25 points af-

ter halftime – and all 14 of the Knights’ points in the fourth quarter – as Central (14-5, 5-3) outscored Thornwood 11-2, in the final 5:35 to secure a 58-52 victory.

“That was the whole thing, my teammates got me the ball,” Koszela said. “I was able to finish, but all the credit goes to them. They dished some good passes.”

The assists came from everywhere, with Jarret Gmazel, Aaron Michalak, Isaiah Malone and Mitch Kwasigroch leading the way. Koszela got the ball in good position in the second half that he

hit nine of his 12 field-goal attempts to finish the game 11 of 18.

“It started with our guards,” Central coach Bob Curran said, citing Gmazel, Michalak and Malone. “They did a great job beating their man off the dribble, their big man left Mikey to help and we got him the ball. If we can beat a team off the dribble, we can be tough on them.”

Thornwood (8-11, 4-4) still was in good position until the stretch run, however, because of its 3-point shooting. The Thunderbirds opened the second half hitting three straight from

beyond the arc, and they made two straight early in the fourth quarter to lead, 50-47. To that point, they were 8 of 17 on 3-pointers.

“If you had told me they would be 8 of 17 from 3, I would have said we’re in trouble,” Curran said.

“You have to credit them,” Central senior forward Isaac Panfil said. “They are good shooters, and they hit some tough 3s. We kind of expected that might happen. But we kept with our game plan. It was a really big win.”

H-F gets past Joliet Central to stay atop SWSC Blue

cherron@shawmedia.com FLOSSMOOR – After the Joliet Central’s boys basketball team only scored 16 points in the first half of Tuesday’s SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue showdown at Homewood-Flossmoor, they came alive with a big third quarter in which they collected 23 points.

That helped the Steelmen to overcome a 13-point deficit early in the second half by tying the score at 39 heading into the final eight minutes.

But Central wasn’t able to carry the momentum over into the final quarter, and the Vikings responded by capturing a 57-46 victory to remain in first place.

The Steelmen (10-9, 5-3) beat H-F (15-5, 7-1) when the squads met on Dec. 4 but now they are two games back in the standings with six contests left.

The Vikings grabbed a 10-point lead late in the second quarter and were up 24-16 at the break. Then they added the first five points of the third quarter to grab a 29-16 lead just 1:08 into the new half and were still up 31-18 when the Steelmen came alive.

Central used a 10-0 run to get back into it. Jose Grubbs (14 points, six rebounds) started the spurt with a 3-pointer and later added a layup. Treveon Ward (eight points) made a layup with 3:31 left in the third quarter to cap the run and pull the Steelmen to within 31-28.

Grubbs hit a 3-pointer with 1:20 left in the third to give Central a 3736 lead, its first advantage since the game’s opening basket.

But H-F answered with a 3-pointer

from Nicholas Holmes before Ward closed out the quarter with a layup to create a 39-39 tie.

In the final quarter, Tyler DeMartra (13 points, six rebounds) and Jeffrey Boyd (nine points) hit buckets to put the hosts back up for good. The Steelmen got a layup from Malik Fuller (20 points, eight rebounds) with 6:24 left to pull to within 43-41, but the Vikings scored the next five points and their lead never dropped below six points the rest of the way.

After connecting on 9-of-13 shots from the floor in the third quarter, Central only made good on 3-of-14 attempts during the fourth period. H-F helped its cause by hitting 8 of his 15 attempts in the final half and also went 15 of 17 from the free-throw line.

The Vikings were led by Kendric Pryor, who scored 14 points before exiting with an injury. Trelan Morrow added 10 points, while Elijah McCreary contributed six rebounds.

“We’re right there,” Curran said. “We can get a top four, or we could go the other way. These are the dog days. But with us going for a top-four seed, that might give us an advantage against some of the teams we are playing now.”

The first quarter was back-and-forth. Malone scored the final two baskets in the final minute to give the Knights an 18-14 lead at the first break.

Thornwood used a 5-0 run midway through the second quarter to regain a lead and led, 31-29, at halftime.

The Thunderbirds opened the third quarter on fire from 3-point range and went up, 40-31. However, Koszela scored three straight baskets and Panfil scored off an assist from Malone to close an 8-0 run that made it 40-39. Kwasigroch’s 3-pointer moments later tied the score at 42, and Panfil’s steal and layup gave Central a 44-42 lead entering the fourth quarter.

After Thornwood’s Drew Evans nailed a 3-pointer for a 50-47 lead with 5:56 left, but the Knights took over.

“Coach Curran guides us through those tough times,” Koszela said of the Knights trailing by nine in the third quarter and by three early in the fourth quarter. “We did a good job in the second half.”

“Every game of ours has been close,” Curran said. “We should be grown up by now. We got beat in the last four or five minutes against Bradley and Joliet Catholic. Today, they shot well in the second half. But especially after it was a 50-50 game, we really did a good job.”

Kwasigroch chipped in 12 points, Panfil seven, Malone six for Central. Panfil had eight rebounds and Kwasigroch and Malone seven each as the Knights outrebounded Thornwood, 39-24.

Joe Benson describes his 2015 baseball as “every bit the roller-coaster ride.”

That’s the way things can be when you spend your entire adult life knocking around the minor leagues.

Now, however, a fresh opportunity looms with his original team.

A multi-tooled outfielder who will turn 28 next month, Benson was a 2006 second-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins out of Joliet Catholic. He moved up through the Twins’ system and made his major league debut in September 2011, hitting .239 in 71 at-bats.

He has not been back in the major leagues since. Last summer, he spent a few months with Gwinnett, the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A team, had a short stint in independent ball with the Sugar Land Skeeters and then was with Binghamton, the New York Mets’ Double-A team, the second half of the season.

He received his release from the Mets after the season and was looking for work.

Celtics bounce back to return to state

cherron@shawmedia.com Considering that Providence Catholic’s competitive cheerleading team qualified for state for nine straight years and won four trophies, not being able to advance to the finals last season was a big disappointment for the program.

But Celtics coach Laura Duesing said her squad used that down note as extra incentive for this season, and so far, it’s paid off.

Providence captured its sixth sectional title and posted the second-best total in the large team division sectionals when it claimed top honors in last Saturday’s Mahomet-Seymour Sectional with a 92.7 score, which ranked only behind Lockport (93.2) statewide.

“Not qualifying for state last season was both a disappointing day and the best day for the team,” Duesing said.

“The disappointment of not having the opportunity to compete at state brought renewed and stronger work ethic and determination to the girls and the team overall. It gave them a renewed focus.

“But also not qualifying in 2015

was one of the best things to happen to us as a team. None of us felt that way in the moment, of course, but within hours the girls were vowing to each other and their coaches to raise the bar to improve their dedication and hard work.”

It was the third sectional title won

by Providence’s five seniors, who also had the privilege of competing on the school’s state championship team when they were freshmen in 2013. That group also were members of a thirdplace squad the next year.

The Celtics five senior squad members are Alli Bebar, Sera Cummings, Bridget Fudala, Nicole Glynn and Carson Sineni. They lead a group of 20 individuals who all can claim the distinction of being on the honor roll in both the first and second quarters this season.

“The other coaches and I are beyond proud of the girls’ determination, perseverance and hard work,” said Duesing, who was recently named Illinois’ National Federation of State High School Associations coach of the year in the sport. “It has been a privilege to watch this team grow and bond during the season. I just love their chemistry

and love for each other. They are great girls and work hard both on and off the cheer floor.

“Making honor roll as a team was a team goal we set at the beginning of the season. To see the girls working so hard in the classroom and on the cheer floor – and being successful with the balance those areas, as well as community outreach – is a testament to their focus, determination and passion for their sport. They are a special group of girls, and I am proud to be their coach.”

Based on their determination and hard work this season, Duesing sees no reason why the Celtics can’t compete for a fourth trophy in the past six years.

“The girls are very excited to compete this weekend,” Duesing said. “The coaching staff is very glad to see the progression and execution of the routine since the beginning of the season.

We didn’t come out of the box super strong at the start of the season, but that didn’t deter them. We kept progressing and improving each week and worked very hard on small details. The girls remained focused, determined and patient through the process.

“The sport of competitive high school cheerleading is very strong in the state of Illinois. We are proud to be part of it and the girls are very eager to step on the State floor on Friday.”

The Celtics will be joined in the large team division by Lockport, Joliet West and Minooka. Competing in the medium team division are Lemont and Morris while Reed-Custer, Dwight and Wilmington will be participating in the small team division.

Lockport and Lemont are among an exclusive group of programs that have competed in each of the initial 10 state meets. The Indians have won trophies nine times, while the Porters have seven trophies to their credit, including back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008.

Joliet West had the third-best sectional score in the large team division (92.13) and will be going after its first trophy. Another sectional champion, Reed-Custer, had the top small team division score in the sectionals (88.13) and also will try to capture its first trophy.

The competition at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington starts Friday. The top scorers from Friday’s preliminaries advance to Saturday’s finals.

“For everybody else, let’s see what happens,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “I feel we have a lot of candidates.”

Among others expected to compete for rotation spots: Williams Perez, Manny Banuelos, Ryan Weber, former

Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin, former Phillies and Rockies starter Kyle Kendrick and rookies Tyrell Jenkins, Sean Newcomb and Aaron Blair.

Newcomb and Blair were big names added in offseason deals that sent shortstop Andrelton Simmons to the Angels and Shelby Miller to the Diamondbacks, respectively.

Luna Boxing teaming Saturday with Big Brothers

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Mike Trafton said Miguel Luna, who owns Luna Boxing in Joliet, might not even realize how much good his club is doing.

Their partnership in Saturday night’s amateur boxing program at the Joliet Park District Multi-Purpose Center at Inwood is a natural.

“Those are all Joliet kids that he has,” Trafton said. “They are a really great group and are doing things the right way. They may not realize it, but he and his coaches are all like big brothers. They are expanding what we do in

Big Brothers.

“They are going to split the proceeds with us. When they asked us if we want to be involved, we said, ‘Yes, for sure.’ ” Luna has six young boxers who compete in fights and scores of others who train at his facility but do not box competitively, at least not yet.

“We got involved with Mike actually through D’Arcy [Motors],” Luna said.

“He was helping sponsor a fundraiser run for Mike’s mom, and our kids went and did their stuff.

“It was a 5K in the beginning of the summer at the stadium. Everyone was done running, and our kids just kept going. Mike said, ‘What do you want me to do with them?’ That’s how I got to know

him. He remembers my kids well because they didn’t stop. He told me then, ‘Believe it or not, you are big brothers with what you do.’ ” The program Saturday night will consist of 24 three-round bouts. Gates will open at 6 p.m., with the bouts scheduled to begin at 7. The donation is $15 at the door. Kids 12 and under will be admitted for $5.

Luna Boxing will have its six boxers competing.

“These kids compete all through our state, in Wisconsin, in Iowa,” Luna said. “Two of them will fight for a Chicago team in Chicago against Dublin on Feb. 14. They won back in August against Dublin, but the Chicago team

lost. They were so impressed that they wanted me to bring them back for the rematch.”

Luna said fighters from Wisconsin, Detroit, Cleveland, Elgin and other locations will compete Saturday.

“The Golden Gloves are coming up, so everyone wants a tuneup,” Luna said. “This is our fourth program. We had two at the Spanish Center, one at the Hartman Center and now this one at Inwood.”

Luna said the program at Hartman Center drew between 300 and 400 people, and parking was an issue.

“That’s why we wanted to have it at Inwood,” he said. “We have the parking lot and a good facility.”

ATLANTA – Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz said Monday that he hopes to be cleared this week to throw off a mound as he continues his recovery from life-threatening blood clots in his right shoulder.

Foltynewicz, a Minooka graduate, said Monday that he has lost about 20 pounds since surgery to remove part of a rib under the shoulder. His 2015 season ended in September when blood clots were discovered and he was placed on blood-thinning medicine.

Even if he is taken off the medication this week and given clearance to start throwing off a mound, Foltynewicz could have difficulty being ready for the start of the season. He said he is about two weeks behind other pitchers in his throwing program.

Foltynewicz said he learned his condition is not unusual for athletes.

“They said it happens a lot because you build your shoulder muscles up so much ... it just crushes the blood vessels,” he said.

“Luckily they found it. It was life-threatening. I could have had a stroke on the airplane on the next trip.

It was kind of scary to go through.”

He said surgeons removed half of the rib under the shoulder.

The 6-foot-5 Foltynewicz said he weighs 209 pounds, down from 226. He looked noticeably thinner as he spoke with reporters at the Turner Field clubhouse after a workout. He said he threw from about 120 feet on Monday and is behind other pitchers who already are throwing off a mound.

Less than a month after winning its fourth national championship in seven seasons, Alabama has a chance to extend its string of unofficial recruiting titles.

Alabama has landed the nation’s top signing class each of the past five years, according to composite rankings of recruiting websites compiled by 247Sports.

Whether that streak continues depends on how much of a signing day surge the Crimson Tide can stage Wednesday.

Although Alabama was ranked fifth in the 247Sports Composite team standings Tuesday morning, it remains in play for so many uncommitted four- and five-star recruits that it has a legitimate chance to move to the top of the rankings.

“I think Alabama is probably going to make the biggest signing day close among those top 10 teams,” said Barton Simmons, the director of scouting for 247Sports. “They have a very real shot at landing the nation’s No. 1 class. They don’t even have to have everything fall into place.

LSU led the composite team rankings early Tuesday and was followed by Ohio State, Florida State, Mississippi and

Alabama. Michigan, Florida, Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame rounded out the top 10.

“You can never bet against (Alabama),” said Mike Farrell, the national recruiting director for Rivals. “I think their finish will be good for any team, but it might not be as spectacular as Alabama is used to. We’ll see.”

Ole Miss faces the challenge of making sure it doesn’t lose any key recruits from that class after being notified Friday by the NCAA of rules violations.

“The timing is interesting because I’m really not sure why they needed to be served right before signing day,” Farrell said. “But the timing also is not as bad as people think because it’s so late for anybody to come up with a second plan if they were planning on going to Ole Miss.”

Seven of the top 15 prospects according to the 247Sports Composite remain uncommitted. That includes No. 1 overall recruit Rashan Gary, a defensive tackle from Paramus, New Jersey. Other uncommitted top-15 recruits include defensive tackle Derrick Brown, linebacker Ben Davis, outside linebacker Mique Juarez, athlete Mecole Hardman Jr., receiver Demetris Robertson and outside linebacker Lyndell Wilson.

Finke likely out, Nunn questionable for Illini

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois coach John Groce said the team might be without two of its starters when it faces Rutgers on Wednesday.

Groce said Tuesday that starting forward Michael Finke has not been able to practice after injuring his left knee in a collision Sunday during a loss to Wisconsin.

The coach said an MRI showed no structural damage but said Finke is unlikely to play at Rutgers (6-16, 0-9 Big Ten).

Groce said junior guard Kendrick Nunn might be able to play, but no decision is expected until game time.

Nunn injured a hip in Illinois’ 63-55 loss to the Badgers.

Nunn is Illinois’ second-leading scorer at 17.8 points a game while Finke averages nine points and four rebounds for the Illini (10-12, 2-7).

Super Bowl favorite keeps the crisp, loses the hard work

ome Super Bowl Sunday, we all love a heaping platter of wings. They’ve got to be crunchy. They’ve got to be a little bit greasy. They’ve got to be so delicious we can’t stop eating even after we know we’ve eaten too many.

What we don’t love about the day of the big game? The work involved in making those wings a reality. Because perfectly crisped and seasoned wings typically require a fair amount of effort, not to mention vats of hot oil. And dealing with that is so much less fun than cracking a beer on the couch with your friends. So we created these hands-off chicken wings that require almost no effort from you. Yet, they are every bit as crispy and addictive as a traditional recipe.

The secret is baking powder. You start the recipe a few hours ahead of when you want to serve the wings. Just toss the wings in a large bowl with some salt, pepper and baking powder, then refrigerate them for a while. The baking powder reacts with the skin, helping to draw out moisture. Less moisture equals more crisp.

When it’s time to cook, you just arrange the wings on a wire rack set over a rimmed baking sheet. The rack keeps the air circulating around the wings and keeps them up and out of any liquid that drips onto the pan. Again, less liquid is key to getting the skin perfectly crisp. When the wings are done, we like to dunk them first in our honey-Sriracha sauce, then in our cilantro-sour cream dip. If you’d prefer the more traditional Buffalo sauce and blue cheese, go for it.

Hands-Off Party Wings

Start to finish: 3½ hours (15 minutes active) Makes 30 wings For the wings: 2 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 5 pounds chicken wings, split and wing tips removed For the honey-Sriracha sauce: 1/3 cup soy sauce 3 tablespoons Sriracha 3 tablespoons honey 1½ tablespoons minced fresh garlic 1½ tablespoons toasted sesame oil For cilantro-sour cream dip: 3/4 cup sour cream 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 3 scallions, white and green parts, finely chopped Line 2 baking sheets with foil, then arrange a wire rack over the foil.

Coat the rack with cooking spray.

In a large bowl, stir together the baking powder, salt and black pepper. Add the wings and toss to coat evenly. Spread the chicken wings over the rack and refrigerate for 2 hours, uncovered.

When ready to cook, heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Bake the chicken wings for 60 to 70 minutes, flipping them halfway through, or until very crispy and golden brown.

While the wings bake, prepare the sauces. For each sauce, combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix until uniform. Serve the wings on a platter accompanied by the sauces for dunking.

Sometimes at the bridge table, if you want to have a winning game, you have to make daring bids and plays.

The North-South spade suit, contract and opening lead are the same as the last two days, but there the similarities end. How should South try to make three no-trump after West leads the spade five?

West opened with a weak two-bid, showing a decent six-card suit and some 5-10 points. Over North’s takeout double, South would have preferred a stronger spade holding for his threeno-trump bid, but with such a flat hand, he did not expect that five of a minor would make.

South has eight top tricks: one spade (because of the lead), four hearts and three clubs. He must play on diamonds for the extra winner. But that means losing the lead twice, and the opponents are threatening to win too many tricks.

On the previous two days, it was right for declarer immediately to put up dummy’s spade queen. Then his follow-up play was determined by what happened at that trick.

Here, though, suppose South does that. If he wins the trick and plays a diamond, East takes the trick and returns his second spade. West runs the suit for down two. Or, if East takes the queen with the ace and leads back his second spade, West will surely have a high diamond as an entry card.

The secret is to play low from the dummy and low from hand too. South will succeed whenever the contract is makable.

There are other options, too. See if colleagues will agree to a true “standing meeting.” Get up and walk to your co-worker’s office rather than relying heavily on email.

Here are a few other suggestions to incorporate throughout your day: • Set an alarm to go off every 30 to 60 minutes during the day. When it rings, get up and walk around. I use this trick myself.

• Pace during phone calls. Stand up and walk around when you’re on the phone. I use this one, too.

• Make TV time less sedentary. Watch TV standing up instead of sitting down. If you’re really motivated, march in place or swing your arms. I’m considering this one.

I spend a lot of time sitting at my computer, writing this column (and other things). Roughly every half-hour, I get up, walk around, walk up and down one flight of stairs and wave my arms around. I’m convinced it makes me less stiff.

Also, several studies have shown constant fidgeting can burn off close to 300 calories a day, which helps control your weight. By fidgeting, I refer to things such as pacing the floor or just constantly shifting your weight or wiggling around in your chair.

We’re not talking about training for a triathlon here – just some simple changes that won’t even cause you to break a sweat.

Dear Reader: Research suggests the more we sit, the more we’re likely to develop heart disease and other illnesses, including diabetes and cancer. Whether it’s sitting at the computer to get some work done or on the couch watching TV, too many hours spent on our bottoms increases the risk of dying from any cause – even if you exercise regularly.

Think of it this way: Say you sleep for eight hours. That leaves 16 hours in your day. Even the most physically active among us, who exercise one or even two hours a day, still have 14 hours to fill. That’s a lot of time.

A study recently published in the European Heart Journal suggests spending more of that time standing, as opposed to sitting, can have a big impact on your health. For the study, researchers monitored the activity levels of roughly 700 adults to determine how much time they spent sitting, standing, walking slowly and walking at a moderate to vigorous pace.

Every two hours a day spent sitting was associated with an increase in weight and waist size, as well as in levels of blood sugar and cholesterol.

As you might expect, time spent walking rather than sitting not only lowered cholesterol and blood sugar levels, but also reduced waist size and weight. Perhaps more surprisingly, simply substituting two hours of standing for sitting also improved blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
