Lincoln Highway Seedling Miles – Dyer, Indiana

In 1913, very few roads were paved, so not everyone in the general public outside large cities had first-hand knowledge of the benefits of driving on paved roads instead of dirt roads.

Paving over 3,300 miles of road could not be done overnight – it would take too much labor and financial funding, so the Lincoln Highway Association constructed Seedling Miles.

The Seedling Miles were meant to show samples of how pleasant driving an automobile could be compared to getting stuck in the mud.

The LHA chose particularly muddy sections to pave with concrete. Paving a mile-long section gave automobile owners the experience of driving on a good road.

In Illinois, the LHA organized the paving of the First Seedling Mile outside Malta in 1914. That particular stretch of the Lincoln Highway was in a low area where spring rains pooled into a muddy mess.

The LHA collected private donations from local people, including one farmer who donated because he understood that a paved road would make it easier for his horses to pull his wagon of grain into town.

The LHA combined donations with a pledge of barrels of cement from the Portland Cement Company to pave the Seedling Mile.

After the paving of the Seedling Mile, automobile drivers traveled to Malta to try out the smooth road, especially enjoying how fast they could drive on it. Some people brought their roller skates and went skating on the road.

The Lincoln Highway Association helped start and refine the nature of road building in the early 20th century.

Using Portland cement, these improved road sections were also constructed in Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and Nebraska.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

In 1920, the LHA started work on the ultimate seedling mile, a short stretch of road constructed to the highest standards in Dyer, Indiana. A 1.3-mile section of rural road was selected and built as a four-lane, concrete highway bordered by pedestrian walkways and illuminated with electric lights.

Photographer Christine O’Brien is an English teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently edits and authors books with Arcadia.

Opened in 1923, the Ideal Section incorporated many new innovative highway features and was considered a model for highway construction for the future.

52-year-old Joliet woman celebrates as she enters her ‘teen years’

JOLIET – Sue Klen is what one would call a “diehard leaper.”

Some people who are born Feb. 29 – which appears on the calendar only once every four years during a Leap Year – celebrate a birthday every year by choosing Feb. 28 or March 1.

But not Klen.

Born on Leap Day in 1964, the lifelong Joliet resident chooses only to celebrate her birthday on her actual birth date.

In other words, Klen is 52, but this year she’s celebrating her 13th birthday.

“It’s fun. It’s something extra. Most of my friends could care less about their birthdays because they’re just getting old,” Klen said. “Me, I’m going to be a teenager. Now I can drive my mother crazy.”

She is among the estimated 200,000 people in the United States who are considered Leap Year babies.

The Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies, which is accessible at www.leapyearday.com, estimates there are about 4 million people in the world born on that day. Raenell Dawn, one of the founders of the honor society, wrote in an email that there are more than 11,000 members in the society.

“We tend to get super excited when Feb. 29 rolls around,” Dawn wrote.

“Getting to celebrate our birthday on our birth date is, well, cool. You annual babies get to do that every year.

We have to wait. So when it happens, many of us make a bigger deal out of it than in the off years.”

Klen is obsessed with Leap Year trivia. Ask her anything – like why Leap Year does not technically appear on the calendar every four years – and she’ll have an answer.

“It takes the Earth 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes and 16 seconds to complete an orbit. So, since it’s less than six hours, if you were to add a day every four years, it’s going to be snowing in July eventually,” Klen rattled off from memory. “So every 100 years, we skip Leap Year unless that year is evenly divisible by 400.”

That means there will be no Leap Year in the year 2100, nor was there one in the year 1900. But Klen celebrated in the year 2000 – because it’s evenly divisible by 400, she said.

The ancient Egyptians were the first to understand how a single solar year and mankind’s calendar didn’t quite match one another.

Klen celebrated her birth year Saturday by attending a painting class at Twisted Cork N Canvas in Plainfield with her mother and friend. Her sister owns the business.

Her mother, Barbara Meurer of Joliet, said she and her daughter have had a lot of fun with the unique birthdays over the years.

“I love it. I can say my oldest daughter is turning 13,” Meurer said.

But did she plan for or think about her daughter being born on Leap Day? “When the labor starts, you just go with it,” Meurer said. “The labor started that day.”

Years ago, family and friends celebrated Klen’s “ninth birthday” at Izzy’s Bar in Joliet. When the invita-

tions were sent out, some raised their eyebrows, wondering why a 9-yearold would celebrating in a bar, she said.

“I just have fun with it,” Klen said.

CREST HILL – Through hearing World War II stories from her grandfather over the years, Jody Woodley learned there was one particular medal that U.S. Army veteran Robert Barcus never received for his service.

It was the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon – presented to servicemen who served five campaigns or major battles over the course of service.

Barcus, now 96, talked about it often – so often that he brought it up to Woodley on Saturday on his way to a surprise awards ceremony at the Willow Falls Senior Living Community in Crest Hill.

“Every time I see my grandpa, he asks me, ‘Do you think we’re going to get that medal?’ Just before we came down here, he asked me, ‘Do you think we’re going to get that medal?’ ” Jody Woodley said. “Well, grandpa, with a little bit of research, letter-writing and help from a senator, I’m proud to finally tell you that we did it.”

United Way of Will County focuses on outcomes in financing nonprofits

JOLIET – Under a new strategic plan, United Way of Will County – a major fundraising arm for local nonprofits and social service agencies – will be paying closer attention to community program outcomes as it strives to prioritize the region’s most pressing needs. Mike Hennessy, president and CEO for the Joliet-based organization, said United Way has always held its 46 partner agencies to high standards, but now will scrutinize programs more closely to assure donors that dollars are being spent wisely and to hold nonprofits more accountable.

“There will be even more measurements of success. We’ve heard from donor surveys: What are we accomplishing? What is being done? And how do we know these dollars are making a differ-

ence?” Hennessy said.

The agency’s board of directors in January voted to become a Community Impact United Way, changing the way it vets agencies it supports each year through a review process. Historically, United Way has served “as a fundraising arm in that agencies tell us what the priorities are and we decide how to best distribute funds,” Hennessy said.

Now, specific programs will be categorized four ways: self-sufficiency, youth success, healthy lifestyles and safer communities, Hennessy said. Four UW panels will determine if a program should be funded, or if there already are comparable services in the community that deserve attention.

That’s to ensure there’s no overlap, Hennessy said.

“Bob, I’m here to honor your service because you saved America. You hit the beach at Omaha and fought at the Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge,” Kirk said. “Like many in your generation, you didn’t

collect all your medals. ... We looked up your record, and it’s outstanding.”

Kirk pinned the medal to Barcus’ badge and thanked him for his service.

Barcus, who donned his WWII uniform Saturday, is a longtime Joliet resident. For more than 50 years, Barcus worked on the Rock Island railroad before retiring from Metra.

Barcus has two children, Mary Ann Fabbre and BJ Barcus, according to his family. He also has seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Before the ceremony, Kirk and Barcus talked about his time in World War II. Barcus said he lost friends in combat and misses the men he fought with the most.

“You miss the guys you were with.

You lived and died together,” Barcus said.

On Saturday, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Barcus finally received the award he had waited years to receive.

“We got that medal that you’ve been waiting for,” Woodley said.

Increased police presence set for Joliet Township high schools on Monday SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – An increased police presence will be in and around Joliet Township high schools Monday morning after a shooting Friday night in the parking lot of Joliet West.

Until further notice, students also will undergo metal detection upon entry to the schools.

As of 6 p.m. Sunday, Joliet police had not made any arrests in connection with Friday’s shooting, according to a news release from the school district.

No one was injured during the incident at the school in the 400 block of Larkin Avenue.

“As an extra safety precaution, all Joliet Township High Schools will have an increased police pres-

ence in and around our schools.

This includes school parking lots during student arrival and dismissal,” the district stated in the news release. “In addition, students will undergo metal detecting upon entry to school until further notice.

Please know that these extra precautions are in place for ease of mind and are not due to any specific elements of the police investigation.”

JTHS asked parents to speak to their children to see if they have any pertinent information about the event, or have any information the school and police need to know while investigating the incident.

Joliet Township High School District 204 is working with the Joliet Police Department as it continues the investigation.

Craft fair helps support Minooka band students As any parent can attest, it’s not cheap to keep kids involved in extracurricular activities. When you have seven children, it could be a nightmare.

Michelle and Russ Russell of Minooka have seven children, three of whom are at Minooka Community High School and play in multiple bands there. Their oldest son graduated this past year, but played in the band as well, so they’ve had three high school students at one time for several years.

To help defray the costs associated with being in band, the Russells rely on fundraisers held by the Band Boosters and other band organizations at the high school.

Feb. 20 was the MCHS Band Boosters’ 25th annual craft fair fundraiser, and it was an overwhelming success, said co-chairwoman Chris Kraft.

Parents and their students sign up to help with different duties at the

craft fair, and the money they are “paid” goes directly into students’ band bank accounts.

“Band is an incredible expense, but without the fundraisers I know it could be more,” said Michelle Russell.

Russell’s three MCHS students are in multiple bands, including pep band, marching band, pit orchestra and percussion.

In addition to costs of equipment and instruments, band students attend a band camp every summer at Eastern Illinois University.

“They stay in college dorms. They have the time of their life,” Michelle Russell said. “They absolutely love it.”

A lot of work goes into organizing

the annual craft fair. Kraft and her co-chairwoman, Carolyn Johnson, already are starting plans for next year’s event, including some changes based on feedback they received, Kraft said.

Because many vendors had to be turned away – there was space for 142 this year – they hope to open space for more vendors next year.

“Our Craft Fair would not have been successful without the help of our wonderful parent volunteers and band students, who worked very hard to set up, assist vendors and clean up,” said Kraft.

Kraft also credited the Band Boosters board members, who not only hold positions but assist with the event.

vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The White Oak Library District, previously known as the Des Plaines Valley Public Library District, tried several times before 2010 to pass a referendum for expansion and modernization of the district.

Finally that year the district passed a $23 million building bond referendum that helped build a new Crest Hill branch library, purchase the Romeoville branch from the Fountaindale Library District and renovate it, and refurbish the Lockport branch.

However, the library has put another referendum on the ballot for March 15.

“There’s been a huge growth in usage of the libraries, both from the standpoint of programming and creative programming, and the number of items checked out,” district Director Scott Pointon said.

The referendum is asking residents to increase the limiting tax rate from 0.1995 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to 0.23 cents.

That would mean a $10.17 increase for $100,000 in home value a year, generating about $500,000 each year for the district.

The funds would be used to staff increased library hours, for more comprehensive ESL services and to install a new digital media lab.

Between the time of the last referendum and last July, there has been a 40 percent increase in checkouts from the library, Pointon said.

“This referendum will improve what we already have,” Pointon said. “We’ve only asked once for an operating rate increase. We’re interested to see how the public feels about this now.”

FRANKFORT – A four-year master planning process is culminating with a March 15 referendum for $3.5 million in bonds for the Frankfort Square Park District.

The district, which covers areas in Will and Cook counties, is putting the referendum on the spring ballot to help fund enhancements at the district’s 32 park sites.

District Executive Director Jim Randall said the referendum is a result of input by residents on how they would like to see the district move forward.

“This is not a dire-straits referendum,” Randall said. “We can function very well without it. But we are giving residents, voters, an opportunity to tell us what to do, whether we should continue forward.”

If approved, the referendum will increase property taxes until the bond is paid off. For a home valued at $250,000, the tax impact is estimated to be an additional $40 a year, or $3.33 a month.

Randall said that calculation is based on the assumption of no growth in the future, adding that if the district grows, the amount residents pay per year would decrease.

Among the park enhancements are playground restoration, pathway benches, native Illinois tree planting, bank stabilization and erosion control, picnic shelters and shelter amenities, T-ball and kickball field renovations and community gardens.

Margaret “Jean” Inlow, age 84, of Joliet, passed peacefully Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016, at St. Joseph Medical Center, Joliet surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Alton, Illinois, to Newton and Margaret (Wood) Cosby.

Jean was a very active member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church. There she served as a Eucharistic minister, assisted in the rectory office and greeted many each Sunday with her warm and loving smile. Jean spent several years as a volunteer at St. Joseph Medical Center often in the cancer care center and cardiac intensive care unit. In 1999, she received the “Volunteer of the Year award” honoring over 9,700 hours of volunteering. She served as the Sunshine chairman, Hospitality chairman and Food chairman for Mended Hearts.

Jean also made visits with many pre- and post-heart surgery patients. Jean’s gifts of giving were in an abundant supply. In her own time, Jean enjoyed gardening, reading and crocheting.

In early December, Robert’s lungs collapsed and his kidneys shut down.

“That was the last time I heard my husband’s voice,” Kristy said.

Robert required two surgeries to repair his lungs. The intubatation and extubation damaged his vocal cords, so he had a tracheotomy. As his challenges mounted, Kristy said she asked him, “So you really want to do this?”

As always, Robert’s heart turned to Kristy and their daughters.

“He said, ‘If I don’t, then I’ll never be at peace if I died not trying. I’ve got

to live for you guys,’” Kristy said.

Shortly before Robert’s 42nd birthday Jan. 18, the LVAD and RVAD failed. But Robert continued with physical therapy and joked with the nurses by unnecessarily hitting the call button until several days before his death Jan. 31.

Although the physical components of Robert’s heart gave out, the goodness encompassing it endured to the end. Today when Kristy envisions Robert, she pictures him swimming or running, finally free of the machines.

Mary was born in Chicago and resided in Plainfield for most of her life. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church. She enjoyed activities such as bowling, fishing, cooking, baking, and crocheting. She was an animal lover, with a primary interest in birds. Family was the most important aspect of Mary’s life. Her grandchildren meant the world to her. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Mom of slain teen says Alvarez used her without permission

CHICAGO – The mother of a slain Chicago teenager said Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez used her in a campaign commercial without permission.

Anjanette Albert told the Chicago Sun-Times she was watching TV recently and was shocked when she saw her tear-stained face flash across the screen. Albert is the mother of Derrion Albert, a 16-year-old honors student killed in a melee outside Fenger High School in 2009. Five teens were charged and convicted in the murder.

The commercial shows Alvarez running through a neighborhood with intermittent images of her with families of victims of violence. When contacted, the

Alvarez campaign admitted Albert had not been contacted and said the ad would be pulled immediately.

Alvarez is seeking a third term as state’s attorney.

Chicago church heavily damaged by fire to be rebuilt

CHICAGO – A historical Chicago church destroyed by a fire last year will be rebuilt.

The Archdiocese of Chicago said the Shrine of Christ the King Catholic Church will be rebuilt and ownership will be transferred from the archdiocese to the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

The archdiocese said the institute has received sufficient funding for repairs on the historical building, which was left heavily damaged by a fire in October.

The congregation has been using a temporary worship space at a neighboring Presbyterian church since the fire.

Principal files sex discrimination suit against district

HIGHLAND – A southern Illinois high school principal has filed a lawsuit claiming Highland Community Unit School District 5 has practiced sexual discrimination by unfairly paying her a smaller salary than less-qualified men.

The Belleville News Democrat reported that in the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis, Karen Gauen alleges the Highland school board paid her predecessor a base salary of at least $25,000 a year more than it paid her to do the same job.

She contends the man got the salary even though he had 17 fewer years of experience as an educator and lacked Gauen’s qualifications.

In addition, the lawsuit alleges Highland paid Gauen less as the high school principal than it pays men who hold lower-level and less-responsible jobs, including assistant principal.

5 taken to hospitals after falling ill at nursing home

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating after five residents of a Chicago nursing home fell ill and were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at the Continental Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Chicago’s northwest side.

A nursing home spokesman said it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the residents to get sick, but they apparently all suffered from similar symptoms.

Continental Nursing, which has 172 residents, treats patients for a number of issues ranging from rehab and physical therapy to dialysis and hospice.

Family makes it through snowstorm for child’s transplant

CHICAGO – The parents of a Memphis 2-year-old said they now can think about their daughter’s future after she underwent a liver transplant that, at one point, was threatened by a snowstorm.

After a year waiting for a liver, Jesse and Nicholas Faris got the call Wednesday that one was available in Chicago.

The Faris family, who adopted Brooklyn from China last year, didn’t know how hard it would be to find a flight.

Jessie Faris told the Chicago Tribune that although the storm was mostly outside Chicago, flights to the city were canceled.

The Faris family finally was able to get a flight on a FedEx plane from Memphis to Chicago.

Jesse Faris said the flight was able to get the family to Lurie Children’s Hospital before a Thursday deadline.

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – A white tuxedoed Chris Rock launched into the 88th Academy Awards – “the White People’s Choice Awards,” he called them – at an Oscars where remarks on diversity dominated proceedings, the craft of “Mad Max: Fury Road” sped away from the competition and Sylvester Stallone was knocked out by Mark Rylance.

The night belonged to Rock, whose much anticipated opening monologue left few disappointed. He confronted head-on the uproar over the lack of diversity in this year’s nominees, and returned to the topic throughout the show. (“We’re black,” he said after a commercial break.)

“Is Hollywood racist?

You’re damn right it’s racist,” said Rock, who also sought to put the issue in perspective. “Hollywood is sorority racist. It’s like: We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa.”

Rock had stayed quiet

before the ceremony as the controversy raged over the second straight year of allwhite acting nominees, leaving Hollywood and viewers eagerly awaiting his one-liners. States cut jobless checks, add pressure to unemployed

The Associated Press JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – When Demetrius White recently lost his job as a $10-an-hour forklift driver loading pallets of shampoo, he applied for unemployment benefits to help support his family.

That aid will not last as long as it once did, because White is among the first group of people affected by a new Missouri law reducing the duration of jobless benefits. His $200-a-week checks will last no more than three months – just half as long as what has typically been available.

“That’s a dramatic change, really,” White said. “Thirteen weeks, I don’t know if I’ll be able to find a job.”

States traditionally have offered up to half a year of aid for the unemployed as they search for new jobs. But since the end of the Great Recession, eight states have reduced the number of weeks that people can draw benefits, while others have cut the amount of money the unemployed can collect.

The cutbacks generally are intended to help shore up unemployment insurance trust funds, which went insolvent in 35 states following the recession that began in 2008. The changes could save hundreds of millions of dollars for businesses that pay unemployment taxes.

President Barack Obama is pushing in the opposite direction. The White House warns that states are engaging in a “damaging erosion” of unemployment benefits. Obama’s budget plan would require all states to provide at least 26 weeks of benefits while expanding coverage to more part-time and intermittent workers.

GOP governors and state lawmakers initiated many of the recent cutbacks to unemployment benefits. And they point to declining unemployment rates as evidence that jobs are getting easier to find.

“When there’s more jobs available, it’s kind of common sense – you shouldn’t need as long as a duration of unemployment benefits,” said Missouri Senate Majority Leader Mike Kehoe, a Republican who handled the legislation reducing benefits.

The 1935 Social Security Act prompted states to enact unemployment programs, which typically pay people about half the amount of their previous paychecks. In 1938, more than fourfifths of the states offered benefits for 16 weeks or less. But all states gradually increased their benefits to at least 26 weeks. South Carolina was the last to do so in 1968.

In 2011, Missouri became one of the first states to reverse course by cutting that to 20 weeks. Last year, the GOP-led Legislature overrode a veto

by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon to further shorten the benefits, linking their duration to the state’s unemployment rate. Because unemployment is below 6 percent, people can get no more than 13 weeks of benefits.

The new limit went into effect in January, even though a legal challenge brought by attorneys for the AFL-CIO is now before the Missouri Supreme Court. The lawsuit seeks to block the new law because of an alleged procedural violation by senators.

For some unemployed workers, the new state laws have added another layer of anxiety to an already unsettling situation.

White is one of about 36,000 Missouri workers who filed initial unemployment claims in January. A mar-

ried father of two, he already has taken out a high-interest loan to help pay for his daughter’s college tuition. His wife remains employed as a teacher, but White said the family is starting to fall behind on bills, including electricity.

He is afraid he will not be able to make mortgage payments.

“It’s been a struggle,” White, 43, said while picking up materials about temporary jobs from a state work center in Jefferson City. “I don’t have confidence of a job or hirings.”

The Missouri law is projected to reduce annual unemployment payouts by $83 million – a reduction of nearly onefourth.

Neighboring Arkansas reduced its unemployment benefits to 20 weeks under a law that took effect last October. Those shortened benefits run out this month for some people, though the state won’t say how many.

South Carolina and Michigan also limit benefits to 20 weeks. Sliding scales linked to unemployment rates have resulted in limits of 16 weeks in Kansas, 14 in Georgia, 13 in North Carolina and 12 in Florida.

Some states also have reduced the maximum weekly payments, narrowed who can qualify and increased worksearch requirements that can result in delayed or denied benefits if not met.

“We’ve experienced a wave of very drastic benefit reductions,” said Claire McKenna, a policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project, a New York-based group that serves as an advocate for low-wage workers and the unemployed.

Ohio could be the next state to shorten benefits. A bill by Rep. Barbara Sears would cut benefits to as few as 12 weeks by linking their duration to the unemployment rate.

SALT LAKE CITY – A 17-year-old boy who authorities said was wielding a metal stick was shot and critically injured by Salt Lake City officers Saturday night, touching off unrest downtown as officers donned riot gear and blocked streets and bystanders threw rocks and bottles.

The teenager shot by two Salt Lake City Police officers was in critical condition at a local hospital Sunday after being struck twice in the torso, according to Detective Ken Hansen with the Unified Police Department, which is investigating the shooting.

Salt Lake City Police declined to identify the boy Sunday afternoon be-

cause he is a minor.

In a statement, the department said two Salt Lake City officers were trying to break up a fight around 8 p.m. where the teenager and another male were hitting a third male with metal objects.

The officers ordered the males to drop the metal, “stick-like objects,” and one male complied. The teenager did not drop the stick and instead moved toward the victim in a threatening manner, Salt Lake City Police Detective Greg Wilking said.

One or both of the police officers then shot the teen.

Police said earlier Sunday the teenager was shot when he tried to attack one of the officers. Wilking said Sunday afternoon that investigators were still trying to determine if that was the case.

He said they had not yet interviewed the officers involved.

Wilking did not have details about how far away the teenager was from officers or the victim when police shot him.

He also did not have details about how long the sticks were or where the males got the metal. Police said earlier Sunday the boy had been wielding a broomstick.

Police did not release the identities of the other two males involved, or whether they were also minors. The male who was hit with the sticks did not require medical attention, Wilking said. He did not know what happened to the other male who had been wielding a stick or whether investigators spoke with him.

Neither officer involved in the shoot-

ing was injured, Wilking said. Police are not releasing the identity of the officers, but said Sunday that both were placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

The officers were both wearing body cameras, but police said Sunday they will not release the footage because of the ongoing investigation and the possibility that the teenager depicted could face charges.

Police did not have details about what prompted the fight in the street, near a downtown homeless shelter, shopping mall and movie theater.

Bystander Selam Mohammad told The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News he was friends with the teenager and said the boy was shot as he turned to face police.

Joliet Central boys basketball coach Jeff Corcoran and his Steelmen are entering this regional week off a four-day span where they lost to Bolingbrook and Joliet West.

He had an up-close-and-personal view of two teams that come up in the conversation on who has a fair shot at winning the Class 4A Lockport Sectional.

“I would have given them the ‘1’ if I could have gotten away with it,” Corcoran said of Joliet West, indicating the respect he has for the Tigers.

“And Bolingbrook, that’s another one that is scary at this point.”

“The way we have been playing, absolutely,” West coach Nick DiForti said when asked if he feels his team

“We went through a gauntlet after Pontiac and didn’t have the opportunity to practice as much as we would have liked.

“The last 21/2 weeks, we have been able to practice more, and that’s been good for us. I like our chances with the way we’re playing now.”

Many observers feel the 5-8 seeds – Stagg, Plainfield North, Joliet Central and Bolingbrook – all are good enough to make some noise, and they don’t stop there.

When I talked with Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost last week, he was saying how good No. 9 seed Lemont is, and how good of a job Rick Runaas does coaching those Indians. Bolingbrook and Lemont will tangle in one semifinal at Minooka, with No. 1 seed Minooka probably facing SPC rival Romeoville in the other semifinal.

And, everyone has noticed what No. 10 seed Plainfield East is doing of

late. The Bengals recently lost starting guard Vinny Tarello to an ACL tear, but they have continued to roll nonetheless. Their regional semifinal against Joliet Central on Wednesday at Lincoln-Way Central should be a dandy.

DiForti, whose team swept Joliet Central in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, said the Steelmen always are tough to beat because “they keep coming at you. You know they aren’t going to give up. That’s a testament to Jeff [Corcoran] and their coaching staff.”

Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) had 17 points, including four 3-pointers, along with five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, while Miles Simelton posted 10 points and a team-best four assists.

Lewis (21-8) will play Indianapolis in the GLVC quarterfinals Friday at Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri.

Lockport, Providence eye more state trophies

cherron@shawmedia.com BLOOMINGTON – It’s often difficult to draw too much significance from a third-place meet at a state tournament, but it was easy to do so at Saturday’s IHSA dual team wrestling finals.

The clash between Lockport and Providence Catholic for third place in Class 3A at U.S. Cellular Coliseum, which the Porters won 42-25, was a clear statement that these programs will be in the trophy mix during the next few seasons.

Both champion Oak Park-River Forest and runner-up Marmion Academy will graduate roughly 43 percent of their overall victories from this season. Montini, which fell in the quarterfinals to Marmion, loses nearly 38 percent of its wins because of graduation.

Lyons Township (42 percent) and Carl Sandburg (62 percent), two other highly-ranked teams which didn’t advance to state, also will suffer big losses from the lineups they had at regionals.

Meanwhile, the vast majority of wrestlers on the Porters and Celtics will be back next season. In fact, many of the top performers will be around for two or three more years.

Lockport will graduate only 38 of its 398 wins (.095), while Providence loses 54 of its 376 victories because of graduation (.144). Basically, that involves Celtics’ Tom Younker and Mason Heimlich and the Porters’ Shayne Oster, the three-time state medalist who had 38 wins and passed his brother, Jameson, to move into second in victories in program history with 155.

“This feeling is awesome,” said Lockport’s Matt Ramos, who won all 11 of his matches this season. “Being at state team and being able to wrestle here in my freshman year and to get this trophy is just an amazing feeling.

Our older teammates were such good leaders, and that made me want to push myself to get better. We started off a little rough, but our team started to grow more of a bond and we’ve become more of a family. So many of our freshmen have such good talent and we want to help each other to get better each day.”

It was the second-straight trophy won by coach Josh Oster’s Porters (245), one place better than last year. Top returning performers for Lockport will be Ronald Tucker (45), Brandon Ramos (38), Baylor Fernandes (34), Anthony Molton (31), Trevell Timmons (28), Abdullah Assaf (24), Nick Dado (20), Matt Kronsbein (19), Brendan Ramsey (18), Yousif Salah (18), Chandler Proszek (17) and Zach Reese (16).

“This just feels really good,” Reese said. “We had so many freshmen who became such a big part of the team, and we’re only losing one person, Shayne. It’s just really nice to be able to excel at such a high level when we’re so young. Teams like Sandburg, OP-RF and Marmion are going to be losing a lot of guys while we’re still competing at this level with freshmen, sophomores and juniors. At first, we were divided between older kids and younger kids, but we started to grow together, and by the end of the year we were one family.”

Younker has experienced the highs and lows in both the wrestling and football programs. He’s excited to conclude his time on the mat seeing the

Celtics once again on the rise.

“From the first day of practice, our guys worked hard,” Younker said. “Coach gave us the date of our regional and told us we had to win it and then win a sectional dual in order to get downstate, and that was always the goal. We had guys make it down to individual state and a couple of guys placed, which was good to see. Then it was time to roll as a team, and we got the huge sectional win. This was a great atmosphere, a great way to end my senior year, a great way to bring our team back and show who we are and what we can be.”

Providence (15-8), which hadn’t been to state since 2008, won its 13th trophy in 24 years under coach Keith

Healy. Top winners whom the Celtics will look to next season include Cole Smith (45), Josh Ramos (40), Ben Emery (39), Jake Lindsey (39), Logan Anderson (27), Dominick Ambrose (25), Dominic Ferraro (24), Juan Bazaldua (23) and John Nowak (16).

“We became more of a team once we started winning some more meets,” Nowak said. “I started stepping up after coach Ben (Gerdes) said something and a fire clicked in me and I started doing my job better. Coach hadn’t been here in several years, so we wanted to feel the experience, the same as him. This was just a team effort, and I love this team. We know that we can always depend on each other, and we have excellent captains and coaches.”

New-look Blackhawks win

The Associated Press CHICAGO – For all the star power with the Washington Capitals and Blackhawks, it was a pretty connection between fourth-line forwards that proved to be the difference.

Richard Panik kicked the puck from behind the net to a streaking Dennis Rasmussen for the rookie’s fourth goal at 12:47 of the third, and the new-look Hawks topped the NHL-leading Capitals, 3-2, on Sunday.

“I thought it was a beautiful pass,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said with a grin, “one of best passes I’ve seen all year.”

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane also scored as the Hawks (39-20-5) won for only the third time in their past eight games. Corey Crawford made 28 saves, helping the Hawks leapfrog idle Dallas for the top spot in the Western Conference with 83 points.

The Hawks were coming off disappointing losses to Minnesota and Nashville, but the defending Stanley Cup champions got a boost from two of their newest players acquired in a flurry of moves last week. Andrew Ladd got an assist in his return to the Hawks after he was reacquired in a trade with Winnipeg on Thursday night, and Tomas Fleischmann had a solid debut after he came over in a trade with Montreal on Friday.

“It was nice to be around familiar faces from the guys who were around when I was here before,” Ladd said.

“There are a lot of things different – they’ve changed this whole room

around – and a lot of new faces, but just fun to be back.”

Marcus Johansson and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for Washington (4512-4), which had won five of six. Braden Holtby made 20 saves while dropping to 39-7-3 on the year.

“You can definitely see why their top players are their top players,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. “I thought today had a little bit of a playoff feel. It’s just another good experience for us.”

The nationally televised second meeting of the season between two of the NHL’s top teams – Washington beat the Hawks, 4-1, on Oct. 15 – was a highly entertaining affair played at a breakneck pace for much of the day in front of a season-high crowd of 22,218 at the United Center.

With the Capitals enjoying a 6-on-3 power play, Kuznetsov stuffed home his 19th goal from a tough angle with 3:21 left, trimming the Hawks’ lead to one. But the Hawks killed off the rest of defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and held on for the victory.

“That was a heck of a hockey game today, I thought,” Washington defenseman Matt Niskanen said. “There was a lot of high pace, good scoring chances, good goaltending, a lot of good stuff out there. Unfortunately, we were on the short end of it, but it was a good game, good team.”

The score was tied at 1 in the second period before Teuvo Teravainen set up Toews’ 22nd goal with a slick pass over the middle to the captain. Ladd helped get the puck to an open Teravainen off a scramble in front.

Johnson earns 76th career Cup win in overtime

HAMPTON, Ga. – Jimmie Johnson used pit strategy to grab the lead and won an overtime race under yellow at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday, earning his 76th victory to tie the late Dale Earnhardt on the career list.

Kevin Harvick led 131 laps, more than anyone else, but ceded the lead after he made his last green-flag pit stop nine laps after Johnson. The No. 48 car made a quicker stop and wound up with about a 14-second lead, then watched it fade away as Harvick gave chase on newer tires.

Harvick was about five seconds behind when Ryan Newman spun on the front stretch with three laps to go, bringing out only the second yellow flag of the race and forcing overtime.

Everyone came to the pits for new tires, and Johnson returned to the track still leading. The victory was his when a crash on the backstretch – the only wreck of the day – took out four cars.

Johnson stuck three fingers out the window – Earnhardt’s car number – on his victory lap. He never got to race the Intimidator, who died on a last-lap crash in the 2001 Daytona 500.

“It’s such an honor,” Johnson said.

“I had to throw a three out the window to pay respects to the man.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. beat Kyle Busch back to the line to take second place, a poignant finish on the day that Johnson pulled even with his father.

“If he’s going to tie that record, I’m certainly glad I got to run second today,” Junior said.

Johnson credited crew chief Chad Knaus for calling the early pit stop, a strategy that allowed him to get past Harvick. The No. 48 Chevrolet came to the pits six laps ahead of everyone else.

“It was definitely a gutsy call,” Johnson said. “The 4 car (Harvick) was awfully tough. It was going to take strategy to get by him.”

For Harvick, it was another Atlanta heartache. He spun his tires on the final restart and wound up a disappointing sixth, hardly indicative of the way he ran most of the race.

Harvick has led more than 100 laps in four of his last five races at the 1.54mile trioval, but he hasn’t won here since the spring event in 2001 – in just his third race after taking over at Richard Childress Racing after Earnhardt’s death.

Nunn scores 25 as Illini beat Gophers The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHAMPAIGN – Kendrick Nunn scored 25, Malcolm Hill added 22 points with seven rebounds and five assists and Illinois beat Minnesota, 84-71, Sunday night.

The Illini opened the second half on a 29-8 run for a 61-48 lead and they never looked back.

Freshman Jalen Coleman-Lands hit five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points for Illinois (13-16, 5-11 Big Ten).

Jordan Murphy stepped up with 22 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota (820, 2-14). Stephon Sharp had a career-high 19 points, while Joey King added 17.

Minnesota used an 11-0 run to open the game and had a 40-32 halftime lead, but Illinois outscored the Golden Gophers 52-31 in the second half.

Minnesota was playing without leading scorer Nate Mason (13.8 points a game), as well as guards Kevin Dorsey and Dupree McBrayer, who all missed Sunday’s game for a violation of team rules.

Wisconsin 68, Michigan 57: At Madison, Wisconsin, Bronson Koenig scored 19 points, and Ethan Happ helped trigger a second-half surge with clutch plays on both ends of the floor in Wisconsin’s victory.

Happ finished with 12 points and six rebounds for the Badgers (19-10, 11-5 Big Ten), who have won 10 of their past 11 games.

Wisconsin opened some breathing room

in a spirited game with an 8-0 run in the middle of the second half that started with Happ on the bench.

The 6-foot-9 freshman forward came back with 11:44 left and stole a Michigan entry pass before driving to the bucket for a layup at the other end.

The conference leader in steals added two more against Michigan and blocked two shots.

Ohio St 68, No. 8 Iowa 64: At Columbus, Ohio, Marc Loving scored 25 points, including both ends of a 1-and-1 with less than 2 seconds to go, and Ohio State rallied from a late deficit to stun No. 8 Iowa.

Keita Bates-Diop added 19 points while Kam Williams added 11 for the Buckeyes, who ended the game on a 12-2 run.

After Bates-Diop preserved a two-point lead for Ohio State (19-11, 11-6 Big Ten) by blocking Mike Gesell’s layup with less than five seconds to go, Loving made the free throws to ice the game.

Scott outlasts Garcia to win Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Adam Scott won the Honda Classic and put to rest any notion that his career would suffer with a short putter.

In a tight duel with Sergio Garcia for the entire round Sunday at PGA National, Scott stayed out of the water and closed with an even-par 70 for a one-shot victory.

It was his first title since Colonial in May 2014, and his first time winning with a conventional putter since the 2010 Singapore Open.

The timing of his victory also was a big statement for the 35-year-old Australian.

Scott won in just his third start since a new rule took effect that bans the anchored stroke typically used for the long putter that he had the past five years. Scott switched back for good at the Presidents

Cup. This was his 10th start since then, and only twice has he finished out of the top 10.

Scott opened with a 10-foot birdie that settled him and led by no more than two shots until back-to-back bogeys around the turn. But it was a two-man race all day, and Scott seized control when Garcia missed a short par putt on No. 11 and Scott hit a fairway bunker shot to 2 feet for birdie on the next hole.

Unlike Saturday, when Scott took a quadruple-bogey on the par-3 15th with two shots into the water, he stayed dry around the treacherous finish at PGA National.

The only nervous moment was on the 16th hole when Scott had a one-shot lead.

Garcia hit a poor pitch and was headed for a bogey. Scott left his 40-foot birdie attempt 10 feet short, and the par putt stopped short of the hole to keep the margin at one heading to the raucous 17th, a par 3 over the water.

28 BBD sufferers preoccupied with defects Dear Dr. K: The doctor says my 14-yearold daughter has something called “body dysmorphic disorder.” What is it, and can it be treated?

Dear Reader: I’ve had questions about this condition before and have consulted with my colleague Dr. Michael Miller, assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Miller said that body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a condition that goes well beyond the concern about their appearance experienced by virtually all teenage girls.

Although BDD was first described in women (usually girls), it occurs also in men and boys. People who have this condition are preoccupied with what they regard as physical defects. In many cases, this concern becomes extreme and even delusional: They see bodily flaws that aren’t there.

They see themselves as puny even though they are muscle-bound from spending hours in the gym.

People with BDD often become fixated on checking their appearance and spend an inordinate amount of time grooming. They may focus on their appearance to the exclusion of everything else, including work or personal relationships.

BDD has characteristics in common with eating disorders, in which people also have a distorted image of their bodies. It also has similarities with obsessive-compulsive disorders, or OCD. Like people with these disorders, people with BDD feel fearful that some harm will come to them from the defect in their appearance. People with BDD spend more time than is reasonable trying to rid themselves of the thing they fear. The hours that people with BDD spend grooming are like the hours that people with OCD can spend cleaning themselves, when they have a fear of dirt and contamination.

surgery or dermatology treatments in pursuit of fixes for perceived flaws. Sadly, their unrealistic expectations can lead them to feel worse, not better, since they see no improvement following the surgery or other treatment.

People with BDD are at increased risk for committing suicide as well as alcohol or drug problems. That’s because they have a high risk for also suffering from depression.

The first big step in treatment is helping your daughter recognize she has a problem.

There are several self-test questionnaires available online (just type “body dysmorphic disorder” into a search engine). I don’t know of any evidence that one is better than another. People with BDD won’t always be persuaded by the results of a self-test questionnaire, of course. However, sometimes such an objective test is more persuasive than a child’s parent.

Antidepressants like the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine (Prozac) can help. Other classes of drugs may treat symptoms that are common in the illness, such as delusions. Psychotherapy is helpful for milder symptoms -- in particular, a form of psychotherapy called cognitive behavioral therapy.

Above all, the goal is to help your daughter turn away from a preoccupation with her appearance and engage in treatment for underlying problems. It won’t be easy, but it may be the only way for her to achieve relief.

DEAR ABBY My husband cheated on me Jeanne and told me to Phillips find somebody else. He moved in with the other woman and spread lies about me, telling my in-laws I had cheated on him. He was on probation, so I reported to his probation officer he was lying about where he was living.

He was arrested for it.

He now is incarcerated and facing a two-year prison sentence. We’re trying to work on our marriage, but I haven’t told him I’m the person who reported him to his probation officer. I’m still angry at him for cheating on me. When I write him, I tend to bring up what he did when he was out. I have told him I forgave him, but lately, I don’t even take time to respond to his letters. What should I do? – Just Plain Angry Dear Angry: You’re not writing to your husband because you are still angry with him, and this is another way of punishing him for leaving you. What you should do is ask yourself, honestly and rationally, if it’s worth it to try and get past the fact that he not only cheated, but tried to damage your reputation as well.

What you should not do, for your own safety, is tell him the person who turned him in for a parole violation was you.

Dear Abby: I don’t know what to do with my parents’ wedding album. My mother gave it to me as a gift when I was a teen, and I assume it was a coming-of-age consideration. I’m now in my 30s with a career that has me moving around frequently. I have moved once a year for at least the past five years, and I have had to pack up this album and box it every time.

I think when my mother gave it to me, she figured I would pass it on to grandchildren, but I have chosen to not reproduce. My parents’ marriage was anything but storybook. What little I remember was abusive and chaotic, and my parents split up before I reached kindergarten.

While these photos are fantastic imagery of a certain era, I do not want to move them around anymore. My father since has passed, and my mother lives in a small apartment on limited means, so I don’t want to return it to her. She also is quite sentimental, and I’m afraid handing this heirloom back to her will be disruptive.

But he cannot immediately use Blackwood, because he does not have a diamond control. South control-bids four clubs, then, when partner returns the compliment with four diamonds, South launches Roman Key Card Blackwood. When North shows two aces and denies the spade queen, South settles for the small slam.

After West leads the diamond king, how should declarer plan the play?

Since the opponents have established a diamond trick, South cannot afford to lose the lead until he has discarded dummy’s diamond five.

So, he should cash the spade ace and king, then start running clubs, and discard that diamond on the third round. Here, it is a home run.
