Schools won’t outsource buses When the board started asking for bids for bus and custodial services, groups of residents showed up to board meetings to protest the process.

“We determined it was not saving us the money we would like it to,” Superintendent Don White said of the bids for transportation services. “It just didn’t make sense. But it was also because of the people who attended the meetings.”

Residents at the meeting thanked the board for taking outsourcing of bus drivers off the table. But some remained concerned about the potential of outsourcing custodial services.

“As a parent, I’m constantly concerned with control over the safety of my children,” Plainfield parent Kathy Kabel said. “I have read that outsourcing comes down to keeping the budget cuts as far away from the instructional programs as possible. Should the safety and well-being of our children not be on the same level as those instructional programs?”

White said the process was about examining alternatives and gathering information,

and it was the only time the board could look at other options before the collective bargaining agreement with the district’s non-instructional employees expires in August.

“We need to at least ask that question,” White said.

“It makes sense to look over the cost-savings of alternatives.”

While the bids for two companies being considered for transportation services, First Student Inc. and Durham Bus Services, were less than Troy’s expenditures for the 2014-15 fiscal year, those costs rose higher than the $3.7 million estimate for Troy in 2015-16, according to a Feb. 19 outsourcing report.

Outsourcing of custodial services is still on the table, and the board will continue to work on that issue at its next meeting on March 19.

Director of Operations Kenneth Surma said a comprehensive study needs to be done on standards and comparisons of custodial costs with other school districts.

“We need to gather some more information and ask some more questions,” he said.

Man arrested on charges of dealing pot at library

Police search finds drugs on man hoping for a ride

BOLINGBROOK – Book ’em.

Police say a 25-year-old man was dealing pot Wednesday at the Fountaindale Public Library.

Lt. Mike Rompa said an anonymous tip send police to the library at 300 W. Briarcliff Road, where they found Christopher M. Long.

“Further investigation revealed he possessed cannabis in his backpack,” Rompa said.

Police found 91 grams of marijuana in the bookbag, Rompa said.

Long, of the first block of Fernwood Drive, was arrested on charges of delivery of marijuana and marijuana possession and booked into the county jail.

CRETE TOWNSHIP – Will County Sheriff’s police say a man who asked a deputy for a ride home Wednesday night ended up at another location – the county jail.

Spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies went to the 23000 block of South Ashland Avenue in Crete Townships to serve an order of protection to Brian T. Patterson, 29.

“He had his bags packed and was cooperative with leaving the residence,” Hoffmeyer said.

Patterson asked the deputies if he could get a ride to his home in the 500 block of Landau Road in University Park.

“They were allowed to do that, but told Patterson he would need to be searched before being let into the squad car,” Hoffmeyer said.

“While that is standard procedure, a deputy noticed a Brillo pad and burned pop can sticking out of Patterson’s jacket pocket, which he felt was suspicious.”

Besides items typically used to smoke drugs, the deputies found Patterson was carrying small amounts of cocaine and heroin, Hoffmeyer said.

Patterson was then given a ride in the squad car and booked into the county jail on charges of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Parents applaud decision; no shift on custodial plan

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Troy school district has decided to keep bus service in house, a decision that drew applause from parents when it was announced Wednesday.

The school district will continue to consider outsourcing custodial services.

But school board President Mark Griglione announced the decision on buses at the beginning of Wednesday’s meeting.

“After a thorough review of all data that has been collected at this time, the board of education and administration have concluded that it is in the best interest of this district to stop the due diligence process for transportation, while continuing the process for custodial services,” Griglione said.

The board in June started exploring outsourcing non-educational services.

Redevelopment of the Housing Authority of Joliet’s Fairview Homes development appears unlikely.

The 168-unit facility is not a good candidate for revitalization, said Michael Simelton, the Housing Authority of Joliet’s chief executive officer.

“Fairview would not score well on an IHDA application due to its location and lack of amenities,” he said. “The more likely option would be to dispose of the property and sell it to someone else.”

Simelton told the HAJ board Wednesday that a veterans group has expressed interest in the facility.

“It’s time for change,” Powell said. “We need to do whatever we have to do to make life better for these people.”

Residents displaced by the demolition would receive housing vouchers, and be given first option of moving back into the redeveloped facility.

One such resident is Cynthia Pitchford, vice president of the resident council at Des Plaines Gardens. She said she is excited about the plan.

“I am looking forward to it,” said Pitchford, a former resident of HAJ’s Poole Gardens complex, which was torn down in 2007 and replaced with mixed-income housing. “This is my second

time around, so I know I will be eligible for it.”

Pitchford runs a program at the facility’s community center to teach new residents how to properly maintain their homes and provide them with cleaning supplies.

“Some of them are living on their own for the first time and don’t really know how to clean a home,” Pitchford said. Floor and oven maintenance are two key issues.

HAJ provides all routine maintenance at the facility.

On Wednesday afternoon, for instance, a HAJ worker had just finished rodding out a clogged drain for one tenant.

Another crew was painting interior walls for a second.

Maintenance services still will be available if a new facility is built, though more emphasis will be placed on educating residents to take care of routine issues themselves, Simelton said.

Pitchford said this could

come as a sea change for some residents, many of whom have lived in public housing their entire lives.

“Residents will have to learn how to handle their own problems,” Pitchford said. “Many don’t know what it’s like to be out on their own. Some of them don’t even know how to change a light bulb, or change a battery.”

Des Plaines amenities HUD typically provides rent vouchers for 50 percent of residents. But if a housing facility offers other amenities, such as a clubhouse or education services, HUD will voucher at 100 percent, Simelton said.

That’s something that makes Des Plaines Gardens, since it already has a recreational center and basketball courts, a particularly good choice for revitalization, Simelton said. Proximity to the downtown, bus lines

and retail shopping are other amenities.

Simelton said a new center with more services would be desirable if the housing plan is enacted.

“We just don’t want to get back into the rut that has plagued public housing of having no services,” Simelton said.

Getting support from city, state and federal officials has been a key part of the application process, Simelton said. He’s already met with or plans to meet with U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante, Councilman Terry Morris, state Sen. Pat McGuire and state Rep. Larry Walsh.

“These pieces are critical for us as well as other stakeholders,” Simelton said. “We want to charter a successful course for this agency that will benefit our residents ... and consequently our community and the City of Joliet.”

The Housing Authority of Joliet has received conditional approval to move ahead with a plan to demolish most of its Des Plaines Garden Homes apartment complex and replace it with new housing.

The Illinois Housing Development Authority has asked HAJ to submit a full application for replacing 122 of 168 units at the 60-year-old development, said Michael Simelton, HAJ’s chief executive officer.

“To receive their conditional approval is just huge for us,” Simelton told the HAJ board Wednesday.

HAJ must now complete environmental, marketing, zoning and other studies to complete the application.

The deadline is March 31.

If the project is approved, buildings containing 122 low-income residences would be razed and replaced with 76 mixed-income homes, Simelton said. The remaining 46 residences eventually could be transferred to HAJ’s Liberty Meadows facility, where the authority has land available for additional construction.

Another 46 outlying units at Des Plaines would remain standing.

If all goes as planned, demolition of the facility at McDonough and Des Plaines streets could begin within a year, Simelton said.

Money to demolish the complex and build new privatized housing would come from IHDA through private investors. Rent subsidies for the new homes would come through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rental Assistance Demonstration program.

National Poetry Slam champion visits Joliet West ‘I hope their world expands’

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Words sprung from Roger Bonair-Agard’s poetry into a portrayal of Muhammad Ali’s quickness and anguish over a legendary rapper’s death.

Bonair-Agard, a two-time National Poetry Slam champion and author of three books of poems, visited Joliet West High School Thursday , where he read selections from his books for students and answered questions about his life and his passions.

“I hope their world expands,” Bonair-Agard said.

“Young people are inundated with all kinds of information, and so much of it is about just buying products, about buying things. I hope to deconstruct some of that.”

Bonair-Agard was invited by English teacher Mark Eleveld with a Joliet Township High School Foundation grant that aims to bring

poets to the students. Many of those students’ eyes were locked on the author as he read in a slam poetry style.

“He’s cool because he makes the stories come alive,” junior Victoria Russell said. “These are the stories of his life.”

Junior Felicite Woods used to write poetry and is considering starting up again after watching Bonair-Agard.

“You usually don’t know what’s behind the poem,” Woods said. “He explained why he wrote it as a segment of his life.”

Bonair-Agard, who has been reading for high school audiences for years and came to Joliet West for the second time, read poems that referenced famous names including Muhammad Ali, Notorious B.I.G., and Slick Rick, along with poets like Sean Thomas Dougherty.

He picked poems that specifically appealed to the current generation of teen-

agers, while making sure to censor some of his selections and keeping the raw energy intact.

He also talked about his passion for writing and the importance of following interests, rather than just money.

“You know, education is not equal,” he said, adding that he isn’t always successful in reaching out to teenagers. “Some kids have lots of experiences and some don’t.

Some kids think this is great, some have a hard time holding attention.”

Junior Raymond Contreras enjoyed Bonair-Agard’s reading of the poem, “The Day Biggie Died,” and also related to the poet’s advice.

“I liked what he said about college,” Contreras said about Bonair-Agard’s insistence on following an interest rather than money. “You should do what makes you happy, and stick to that.”

“It’s a watershed moment for students to meet the writer they are studying,” Eleveld said. “The goal of this is to bring in performing poets to entertain and help to improve students’ writing.”

Judge finds Elwood not in default on TIF loans

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – A judge’s ruling this week takes the village of Elwood out of default on $150 million in tax increment financing notes used to finance the development of the CenterPoint Intermodal Park.

The ruling in Cook County Circuit Court comes as part of an ongoing case in which Elwood is suing developer CenterPoint Properties.

But the finding that Elwood is not in default is expected to be a boost to the village’s credit rating.

“This is a significant step

that will greatly impact taxpayers and will put the village in a strong financial position heading into the future,” Elwood Village President William Offerman said in a written statement.

The order late Wednesday

by Cook County Judge Thomas Allen only applies to the question of whether Elwood was in default on TIF notes held by the Bank of New York Mellon Trust Company.

The village in February 2013 filed a lawsuit attempting to force the Oak Brookbased company to detail how it has spent what the village says amounts to $110 million in tax subsidies used to sup-

port development.

The village issued $150 million in TIF notes toward the industrial park with the understanding that the notes could only be issued if the company projected enough tax revenue to repay the principal and interest by 2023, Elwood contends in its lawsuit.

The village, unable to pay back the TIF notes on time and in full, had been declared in default by the bank since 2006, Jonah Orlofsky, attorney for Elwood, said Thursday. The industrial park’s failure to generate enough tax revenue to pay the notes led to the default, Orlofsky

said.

Allen’s ruling orders that all declarations of default on the matter be vacated.

“What the deal said is, in all capital letters, is that we’re issuing these notes and we’re obligated to repay them, but our repayment obligation is limited to the revenue that this project generates,” Orlofsky said.

Wednesday’s ruling doesn’t necessarily impact the lawsuit directly, he said.

“We’ve resolved this issue in our favor. The lawsuit, on the broader issue, is simply ongoing,” Orlofsky said.

The project hasn’t come close to the $20 million to $40

million in annual TIF revenue that the company initially projected when it requested the TIF district, Orlofsky said. For example, the Deer Run Industrial Park generated $7.7 million in 2012.

Dan Hammer, general counsel for CenterPoint, declined to comment on the judge’s ruling or the impact on the lawsuit.

CenterPoint Chief Development Officer Michael Murphy issued a written statement, saying, “We are pleased that Elwood has resolved the default issue with the trustee.”

A status hearing on the case is set for May 21.

Lemming said the police departments in communities similar to Lockport, such as New Lenox and Westmont, had two deputy chiefs. They also had more officers.

The restructuring also involves other changes in the department and the replacement of an officer who plans to retire in the summer.

Lemming said he is doing a study to determine if the department is appropriately sized.

“I think the overall goal was to fix the command structure,” said City Administrator Ben Benson, who worked with Lemming and Finance Director Erik Brown on budgeting for the changes.

JOLIET – The alleged gunman needs glasses.

Jordan A. Arthur, 25, who has been in jail since his arrest in June 2011 on murder charges, will be allowed out under police guard to visit an optometrist, Judge Sarah Jones ruled Thursday.

“The charges against him are certainly serious,” Jones said. “But I believe the sheriff’s office has allowed even a convicted murderer out for a funeral appearance and has procedures in place.”

Jones was correct. On Oct. 11, 2012, Will County sheriff’s deputies escorted Drew Peterson to a Darien funeral home for his mother’s wake. Peterson had been convicted four weeks earlier of killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004.

“It’s not asking for anything extraordinary,” Defense Attorney Greg DeBord said.

On June 1, 2011, Courtney

L. Jordan, 34, called 911 saying he was being threatened when shots rang out, Joliet police said. Officers arrived at a Hickory Street parking lot to find Jordan had been shot to death.

Detectives learned Jordan, who had a lengthy history of drug arrests, was involved with a woman who was also dating Arthur at the same time, police said.

Arthur was questioned and allegedly provided an alibi which did not stand up to investigation. He was arrested two days later.

The Will County Jail provides reading glasses to some inmates, but Arthur reportedly is unable to read his legal briefs.

Arthur’s mother will be paying for the office visit and any glasses her son needs.

Jones reserved the right to decide whether his family will reimburse the county for the expense of transporting him.

Arthur is next scheduled to appear in court May 15.

School board to interview superintendent candidates this weekend

At 8 a.m. Saturday and noon Sunday, board members will hold closed session meetings to find a superintendent for the school district. Board President Christopher McFadden said because the matter is per-

sonnel-related, it will not be open to the public.

“The hope is we have a superintendent by April 1,” said he said.

McFadden declined to comment on the number of candidates who would ap-

pear.

The school district has been without a superintendent since October, when Tom Hurlburt, who had been with the district for five years, resigned for personal reasons, he said. Since then,

Patricia Wernet, a former superintendent herself, has served as interim superintendent.

Each meeting will be held at the district administrative office, 10482 W. Nebraska St., Frankfort.

LOCKPORT – The Lockport Police Department may see changes in command in the coming year.

City Council members are set to vote at their next meeting to allow Lockport Police Chief Terry Lemming to restructure the police department by making several promotions and hiring an additional officer this year.

In a memo to Mayor Steven Streit and council members, Lemming said the command structure should be adjusted to increase the department’s efficiency and accountability. Lemming, who was appointed as police chief in December, said when he was previously working for the state police, part of his job was restructuring state

police districts.

“In the police profession, investigative units have a supervisory position,” he said after Wednesday’s committee of the whole meeting. “We haven’t had one in our investigative division for years.”

If the plan is approved, Lemming would be able to promote Lockport Police Lt. Dave Draksler to deputy chief in March.

Council members unanimously approved at Wednesday’s City Council meeting giving Lemming authority to create the deputy chief position.

Draksler had served as acting police chief for a year until Lemming was appointed in a 5-4 vote by council members in December. The decision was controversial at the time, as some council members and residents fa-

Bar associations judges candidates

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – The prospective judges have been judged by a jury of their peers and the verdicts are in.

The Illinois State and Will County Bar Associations have released the result of a recent poll sent to members about the 13 candidates seeking nominations in next month’s primary election.

Earlier this year 853 ballots were sent out to members of either association who practice in the 12th Circuit.

Executive Assistant Shelia Russum said there are about 600 members of the Will County Bar Association.

“The state bar association sends out the questionnaire and determines the scores, but they do not release how many respond,” Russum said.

The candidates receive the results about a week before they are released to the public.

Respondents were asked to recommend the attorneys

and judges who have filed to run in subcircuit 1 or 2 on their integrity, impartiality, legal ability, temperament and ability to manage cases and clients.

They also are evaluated on whether their conduct shows bias against any client’s, opponent’s or witness’ race, gender, age, sexual orientation or economic status.

And leave it to the lawyers to come up with a poll that can legally ask in today’s world of HIPAA and hiring concerns whether a potential judge has the physical health, stamina and stability for the job.

The categories are averaged together and any candidate who scores above 65-percent is recommended as a candidate.

Judge Dinah Archambeault, Judge Dave Carlson, Judge David Garcia, Assistant State’s Attorney Tina Filipiak, and private attorneys Daniel Kennedy, James Murphy, Dan Rippy and Dawn Underhill were recom-

mended candidates.

Assistant State’s Attorney Moira Dunn, Assistant Public Defenders Stewart Ferreira and Sherri Hale and private attorney Cosmo Tedone were not recommended.

Attorney Diane Para was not evaluated because of a lack of response, according to the poll.

Archambeault, whose integrity rating was the only perfect score in the poll, also had the highest overall rating with 94.76. She is running unopposed in the Republican primary for Subcircuit 2 and will face off against either Dunn, Ferreira, Filipiak, Garcia, Kennedy, Murphy or Underhill in November.

Hale is running unopposed in the Democratic primary to replace the retiring judge Robert Livas in Subcircuit 1 where Rippy and Tedone are the Republican candidates.

Carlson, a Republican, and Para, a Democrat, are unopposed in their primaries for the newly created judges seat also in Subcircuit 1.

years, they relocated numerous times because of her husband's position with Caterpillar Tractor Company living in England, Belgium, France, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and several different states.

Esther was a teacher in Joliet, IL during the 1950s and 60s, a member of First Presbyterian Church and Alpha Kappa Gamma.

She was an active and social person participating in numerous book and bridge clubs during her later years.

In 1978, she had the lead in the play, “Paris Is Out” for the Stagecoach Theater in DeKalb, IL. She moved to St. Charles in 2001 and became a member of Baker Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by her daughter, Maurine (Alfred) Patten of St. Charles; four grandchildren, Paul (Marianne) Patten, Beth (Dave) Nawara, Edwin (Denise), and Derek (Susan) Luchs of New Jersey; and eight great-grandchildren, Laird and Aron Patten, Sarah and Emma Nawara, Ryan and Megan Luchs, and Mary and Fred Luchs.

In addition to her parents, three sisters, and one brother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Foote; and their daughter, Mary Ann Hannenburg.

A private memorial service will be held at a later time, in the Chapel at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church.

Dorothy Luchik (nee Riffel), age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 20, 2014 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Casey, IL to the late Birtle and Cleta Black, residing in Joliet for over 58 years. Martha spent 10 years visiting the Autumn Adult Day Care Center.

KAREN C. SCHMIDBERGER Karen C. Schmidberger (nee Johnson), age 71, entered eternal life on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 with her loving family by her side.

Karen is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Louis D. Schmidberger; cherished son, Donald Schmidberger; dear brother, Robert Johnson of Iowa; brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Gene and Jen Klainsek; uncles, Bob Rys and Fred Koenig; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Dorothy (nee Kelty) Johnson.

Karen was a lover of animals. She adored her pets Zuzu, Bailey, and Hoda. She was also the author of the children's book, “Hobo A Very Special Cat.” Karen loved going with her family to see concerts at the Rialto. She lived her life to the fullest and shared her love with everyone that she met.

PATRICIA J. SULLIVAN Patricia J. Sullivan (nee Goff) Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the age of 85.

Survived by her son, Chris (Patricia) Rouskey; daughters-inlaw, Kathleen Rouskey and Mary Rouskey; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Patricia was born December 6, 1928 to Earl and Anna (nee Ellsworth) Goff in Ashland, WI. She resided there until 1994 when she and her husband moved to Crest Hill

after her retirement from Munsingwear.

Patricia was a wonderful mother to her three sons who she raised as a single parent, and will always be remembered for her selfless sacrifice and constant affection. It would be impossible to describe the love given from her. She will also be remembered for her cheerful disposition, tremendous sense of humor and loyalty and devotion to her family.

She was a member of the Joliet Christian Women's Club and Red Hat Society, and Cantigny Post VFW #367 Ladies Auxiliary. Patricia enjoyed music and dancing, but most of all enjoyed times spent with her family and friends especially, those friends she met while residing at the Timbers in Shorewood. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS PRAGUE – Fighter pilot Miroslav Standera, who fled Czechoslovakia to fight for the British and French air forces in World War II, has died at age 95.

Council officials in his hometown, the southwest Czech city of Plzen, said he died Wednesday but provided no cause.

Miroslav Born a Standera month before the end of World War I, Standera graduated from an aviation school but fled in 1939 following the country’s takeover by Nazi Germany.

He joined France’s air force and fought the German invasion there in May 1940. He was seriously wounded during a dogfight a month later but safely crash-landed. The Czech Defense Ministry said Standera was the last surviving Czech pilot to have flown for France during the war.

After France’s surrender, Standera became a found-

er member of the Royal Air Force’s No. 312 Fighter Squadron composed of Czechoslovak pilots; he and 87 countrymen served as RAF pilots during the Battle of Britain that year.

Later in the war, he flew twin-engine fighter-bombers on night-time raids into France and Germany. He clocked a total of 1,320 hours of combat flying time.

After the 1948 Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, Standera fled again to Britain to escape persecution of those who had served in Western forces during the war. He rejoined the RAF and retired in 1955.

Following his military career, he worked as a silversmith in Britain, then in 1983 resettled in Bavaria in Germany. He returned to his homeland in 1994.

President Vaclav Havel granted Standera the honorary rank of brigadier general in the Czech military at a 2000 ceremony.

“Once you start flying, you won’t stop until you die,” Standera said in September when he was guest of honor at a celebration of his 95th birthday at an airport near Plzen.

The Issue: One of Rauner’s six children initially was rejected in 2008 by Chicago’s prestigious Walter Payton College Prep. Rauner says his family appealed on her behalf through a principals discretionary process, something he says other parents do routinely. The daughter, now in college, had straight A’s and top-notch test scores but missed school due to illness and had a marred attendance record, he says. She later gained admission for that year. CPS policy says that principals of selective high schools can use discretion for up to 5 percent of incoming freshmen.

The Donation: In December 2009, the Rauner Family Foundation gave a $250,000 donation to Payton Prep Initiative for Education, which the Sun-Times first reported in January and Rauner’s campaign later confirmed.

The donation came more than a year after the daughter’s enrollment, which Rauner has pointed out. Rauner’s spokesman Mike Schrimpf told The Associated Press that the contribution “had absolutely nothing to do with her admission.”

The Education Secretary: Rauner has changed his stance on whether he talked with Duncan about the admission of his daughter. When asked in September 2013 by the (Springfield) State Journal-Register if he talked to Duncan about the admission, he said: “I did not.”

However, months later he told Chicago news outlets, including WBBM-TV, that he had talked to Duncan.

Report: Fewer but bigger Illinois farms

Lawmakers want to ban smoking on campuses

ST. LOUIS – A new federal report shows Illinois has lost nearly 1,800 farms, though an increase in the state’s agricultural acreage perhaps reflects consolidation.

The findings come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s farming census conducted every five years. The latest figures are as of 2012.

The report shows the number of farms statewide fell by 1,773 to 75,087 between 2007 and 2012. But the farm acreage rose to 26.94 million, up more than 162,000 acres.

The census also showed that the average size of an Illinois farm climbed by 11 acres, to 359. Nationwide, the report says the number of farms slip 4.3 percent to 2.1 million, with the total amount of agricultural land relatively flat at 922 acres.

The report is used in evaluating and implementing agriculture policies and programs.

SPRINGFIELD – A proposal to ban smoking on public college campuses is advancing in the Illinois Legislature.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports the measure passed out of a House committee Wednesday by a 9-3 vote.

The state Senate approved the measure last year. It would ban smoking on all properties belonging to state-supported colleges and universities starting July 1. State Rep. Ann William is sponsoring the proposal. The Chicago Democrat says the ban was crafted to reduce students’ exposure to secondhand smoke.

Some Illinois universities already have enacted their own smoking rules. Illinois State University and the University of Illinois both have bans in place.

The measure now heads to the full House for further debate.

SPRINGFIELD – As he campaigns to be Illinois’ next governor, billionaire businessman Bruce Rauner of Winnetka cannot shake questions about his daughter’s admission to an elite Chicago public school where he later made a hefty donation – a sensitive issue in a state with a history of political clout and scandal.

On the campaign trail, Rauner’s GOP primary opponents have characterized the school admittance as an example of him using his influence and getting special treatment for family. But Rauner, a longtime school reform advocate who has given millions to Chicago schools, rejects those claims, saying his family didn’t ask for a special favor and followed administrative procedure to get his daughter admitted. The venture capitalist portrays himself as a political outsider who’ll fight against such special interests.

Yet the issue arose again this week when Rauner changed his story on his personal in-

volvement – namely on whether he had spoken about his daughter to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who was then Chicago Public Schools CEO. At a candidate forum in Springfield with Treasurer Dan Rutherford and state Sens.

Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard, Rauner said he didn’t remember the details of conversations with Duncan and apologized to a reporter for misleading him on the question.

Obama budget to drop cost-of-living trims

By JIM KUHNHENN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The White House says President Barack Obama’s upcoming budget proposal will not include his past offer to accept lowered cost-of-living increases in Social Security and other benefit programs.

Those had been a central component of his long-term debt-reduction strategy.

Officials said Thursday that those potential reductions in spending, included in last year’s Obama budget, had been designed to initiate negotiations with Republicans over how to reduce future deficits and the nation’s debt. But Republicans never accepted Obama’s calls for higher tax revenue to go along with the cuts.

“The president was willing to step forward and put on the table a concrete proposal,” White House spokesman Josh

Earnest said. “Unfortunately, Republicans refused to even consider the possibility of raising some revenue by closing some loopholes that benefit only the wealthy and the well-connected.”

While many Democrats cheered the new decision, Republicans portrayed the White House move as abandoning any commitment to fiscal discipline.

“The one and only idea the president has to offer is even more job-destroying tax hikes, and that nonstarter won’t do anything to save the entitlement programs that are critical to so many Americans,” said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner. “With three years left in office, it seems the president is already throwing in the towel.”

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said

Democrats had stood behind Obama’s efforts to negotiate on a long-term budget deal, but she said Democrats applauded Obama for eliminating that cost-of-living reduction from his budget.

Earnest insisted the offer would remain on the table in the event of new budget talks but that it would not be part of the president’s formal spending blueprint for fiscal 2015 when it’s unveiled March 4.

The new Obama proposal would eliminate congressionally mandated automatic spending cuts that are scheduled to continue kicking in through 2015 by adding $56 billion to the budget, evenly divided between military and domestic spending.

That increase would include money for what the White House calls an “Opportunity, Growth, and Security Initiative.”

Dems see chances for gains in governor races

By KEN THOMAS and STEVE PEOPLES The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Democrats, facing fewer opportunities to pick up seats in the Senate and House, see a more fertile playing field in the three dozen governors’ races across the country this year.

As a bonus, there’s even the potential of scoring an early knockout against a potential 2016 Republican presidential contender or two.

In campaigns with broad presidential implications, Democrats see encouraging signs in their fight against Republicans’ hold of 29 of the nation’s 50 governor’s mansions. Republicans will have a large map to defend – the GOP controls 22 of the 36 seats up for election, including six in states that Obama carried twice: Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, Wisconsin

and Maine.

Part of the strategy aims to undercut a group of prominent Republican governors first elected in 2010 who have presided over improving economies and billed themselves as reformers in contrast to the dysfunction in Congress.

“The myth of Republican governors as reformers is dead,” said Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, who leads the Democratic Governors Association.

The GOP is waging a broad campaign to highlight improving economies and optimism under Republican governors from South Carolina to New Mexico. Republican strategists view Obama as a liability for Democrats, particularly in a number of Rust Belt states that elected GOP governors four years ago. But they acknowledge that the fall elections could influence the 2016 presidential race.

Walker investigation compared to Christie MADISON, Wis. – For more than three years Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker avoided political fallout from a criminal investigation that ensnared six of his former aides and associates, winning a recall election even as his opponent ran ads attacking him on the scandal.

But with the Republican up for re-election this year and considering a run for president in 2016, questions are intensifying over how much he knew about illegal campaign activity going on in his county executive office as he launched his bid for governor.

Democrats are trying to use embarrassing emails, which were part of 28,000 pages of

documents released Wednesday, to liken his woes to those faced by other embattled Republicans like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

The liberal political action group American Bridge 21st Century launched a website to coincide with the document release that highlights problematic emails and blasts Walker’s role. And Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz went after Walker hours after the release, trying to tie Walker’s troubles to Christie’s.

The emails are a goldmine for Walker’s opponents, said Democratic consultant Chris Lehane.

“The 28,000 emails will allow every reporter, Democrats and

those who have been engaged in a protracted battle with Scott to pick and choose emails that they believe will raise questions about the conduct of the office and create what could be countless battles for Scott,” Lehane said.

But Walker’s allies say given that he was never charged in the investigation, which is now closed, all the attention is much ado about nothing.

“At the end of the day the media’s going to overplay their hand, like they did with Chris Christie, and it’s going to embolden the grass roots to rally around Scott Walker,” said Rick Wiley, a former Republican National Committee political director.

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan opposition leaders condemned the government Thursday for its heavy-handed attempt to subdue a protest movement with nighttime sweeps that have turned many parts of the country into dangerous free-fire zones.

Police, National Guard troops and members of private militias have swarmed through streets in the capital and elsewhere firing volleys, at times indiscriminately, in repeated spasms of violence on recent nights.

Henrique Capriles, the twotime presidential candidate of an opposition coalition, said the government has engaged in “brutal repression” as it goes after students and other protesters, in some cases breaking into apartment buildings to arrest those it accuses of taking part in an attempted coup.

The U.S. usually doesn’t recognize countries by ethnicities, but Deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the U.S. does recognize Israel as a Jewish state. In his State of the Union speech to Congress last month, President Barack Obama said the goals of the negotiations launched last July were “dignity and an independent state for Palestinians, and lasting peace and security for the State of Israel – a Jewish state that knows America will always be at their side.”

Kerry himself implied support for the idea of a Jewish state by advising Israelis they must pull out of Palestinian-populated lands occupied in the 1967 war in order to retain a strong Jewish majority.

Indeed, if Israelis eventually hand over significant territories to a Palestinian state, the motivation will indeed stem largely from a desire to

unload their Palestinian population and leave themselves with a strong Jewish majority. An Israel that controls the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza – the areas occupied in 1967 – would have some 12 million people roughly evenly divided between the two groups.

Writing in the Haaretz newspaper on Thursday, liberal columnist Ari Shavit said, “The deal on the table is clear: A Jewish state in exchange for the 1967 borders.”

That, Shavit and others say, means the Palestinians must forget about a return by Arab refugees and their descendants to Israel.

But the whole notion of a Jewish state is a complicated one. By shining strong light on a matter that lives more comfortably in the shadows, Israel may be rekindling some awkward questions: Are the Jews a nation – or individuals who share a religion? Should a religion have a state? Should a state have a religion?

JERUSALEM – Is Israel “the Jewish state”?

The answer may seem as obvious as the Star of David on the Israeli flag. Yet the question is starting to complicate the ambitious U.S. effort to ram through a peace deal between the Palestinians and Israel.

A broad-based group of Israelis plans to lobby the Knesset to declare the country, for the first time, a Jewish state by law. And Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded that the Palestinians recognize Israel’s Jewish status explicitly as part of any agreement.

“This is the Jewish land.

This is the Jewish state,” he said in a speech this week to assembled U.S. Jewish leaders. “When we make an agreement it is an agreement between the nation state of the Jewish people and a nation state of the Palestinian peo-

ple.”

Leading Palestinians made their opposition clear this week, insisting that by introducing the Jewish factor, Israel is drawing a red line that could doom negotiations.

“I remember the days when we were told, ‘All you need is to get the PLO to recognize Israel, and recognize Israel’s right to exist in safe and secure boundaries,” said Hanan Ashrawi, a prominent member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The Palestinians did just that, she noted, as part of the 1990s interim peace agreements.

“The Jewishness of the state of Israel, this is a new addition,” she told reporters Wednesday. “We are working to establish a pluralistic, democratic, inclusive state in Palestine. Not an exclusive state based on religion, ethnicity or whatever.”

By YURAS KARMANAU The Associated Press KIEV, Ukraine – Protesters tossed firebombs and advanced upon police lines Thursday in Ukraine’s embattled capital.

Government snipers shot back, killing at least 70 people and wounding hundreds of others, according to a protest doctor.

Video footage on Ukrainian television showed shocking scenes Thursday of protesters being cut down by gunfire, lying on the pavement as comrades rushed to their aid. Trying to protect themselves with shields, teams of protesters carried bodies away on sheets of plastic or planks of wood.

“The price of freedom is too high but Ukrainians are paying it,” said Viktor Danilyuk, a 30-year-old protester. “We have no choice, the government isn’t hearing us.”

Protesters were also seen leading policemen with their hands held high around the sprawling protest camp in central Kiev. Ukraine’s Interior ministry says 67 police were captured in all. An opposition lawmaker said they were being held in Kiev’s occupied city hall.

President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition protesters who are demanding his resignation are locked in an epic battle over the identity of Ukraine, a nation of 46 million that has divided loyalties between Russia and the West.

Parts of the country – mostly in

its western cities – are in open revolt against Yanukovych’s central government, while many in eastern Ukraine back the president and favor strong ties with Russia, their former Soviet ruler.

Protesters across the country are also upset over corruption in Ukraine, the lack of democratic rights and the country’s ailing economy, which just barely avoided bankruptcy with a $15 billion loan from Russia.

At least 101 people have died this week in the clashes in Kiev, according to protesters and Ukrainian authorities, a sharp reversal in three months of mostly peaceful protests.

Now neither side appears willing to compromise or in control of the streets. The opposition is insisting on Yanukovych’s resignation and an early election while the embattled president is apparently prepared to fight until the end.

Thursday was the deadliest day yet at the sprawling protest camp on Kiev’s Independence Square, also called the Maidan.

Snipers were seen shooting at protesters there – and video footage showed at least one sniper wearing a Ukraine riot police uniform.

Dr. Oleh Musiy, the medical coordinator for the protesters, told the AP that at least 70 protesters were killed Thursday and over 500 were wounded in the clashes – and that the death toll could well rise further.

Unlucky 13 for taxpayers

Don’t want to mess up a good thing I’ve been in a long-distance relationship for nearly six months now.

I’ve been wanting to tell you more about Jennie but I’ve been reluctant because I really like Jennie.

That may seem like a reason to write about her but I’m paranoid about messing up a good thing. As Mark Twain said, and Jennie recently quoted, it’s better to remain silent and let people think you’re a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

For instance, if Jennie did something amusing but embarrassing, she might not appreciate me telling the world about it. Let’s say, theoretically, that she heated up a dish of spaghetti and accidentally flipped her fork in it, sending hot noodles into the air and onto her face. That would be funny, right?

But I could never tell that story because it might embarrass her.

Remember, I said “theoretically.”

Plus, Jennie is a schoolteacher, so there is a level of decorum to be upheld. What would her students think if she had splashed hot pasta all over her face? Fortunately, most 5-year-olds can’t read that

RAMBLIN’ MAN David Porter well, but their parents presumably can. They might laugh and discuss how funny that would be to see the teacher theoretically adorned with noodles in her hair. I can’t let that happen.

And if the tomato sauce was so hot that it actually left a blister on her face, that would be tragic and unbecoming. And less funny but still a little funny.

And if there was such a mess on the floor that a janitor had to come in to clean the carpet, I’m pretty sure she would not want everyone to know it. It’s a good thing we’re talking theoretically.

I could never tell that story, could I? No, I would need to stick to the facts. Like how beautiful she is and thoughtful and smart and helpful.

She is all of those things. Even if she had sticky strands of spaghetti stuck to her face, she would still be

the most beautiful woman you ever saw.

She is so pretty, she doesn’t need spaghetti noodle decoration to make her more beautiful. Although it would be kind of cute. Theoretically.

One of the things I like about Jennie is her mystique. She is very mysterious. For instance, what is a woman like that doing with a slouch like me? That is the mystery of the century.

I know she could do worse than me. Among the state’s prison population, there are at least two or three guys who are worse than me. But let’s keep all this between you and me. She doesn’t need to know what kind of poor choice she is making. I’m sure she can figure it out on her own when she’s not picking spaghetti noodles out of her hair.

Theoretically.

In recent years, problems with Illinois’ underfunded public employee pension system have often made the news.

Skipped pension payments by the Legislature. Overly generous pensions for certain retirees. Rising unfunded pension liabilities.

End-of-career pension bumps for school administrators and teachers.

After several years of debate and consideration, the Illinois General Assembly approved a pension reform package last year that is supposed to help matters.

Whether it actually works won’t be known for a while. The compromise failed to completely satisfy any of the contending sides, so perhaps that bodes well.

However, it certainly does not help the cause of pension harmony when certain pensioners receive more money than they are entitled to.

The Daily Herald of Arlington Heights reported several weeks ago that, last year, the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund doled out an extra $41 million to local government and school district retirees in the form of annual bonuses.

Retirees receive 12 monthly pension payments a year. Inexplicably, what’s known as a “13th payment” was also sent out in early July.

The Daily Herald, through The Associated Press, reported that the average bonus for pension recipients for 2013 was about $340, although payments went as high as $7,600.

The newspaper also reported that tens of thousands of dollars in property taxes paid by residents of one county went to pensioners who never worked there.

In the world of Illinois state government, perhaps $41 million isn’t much money. But there is no reason to pay it to pensioners if the money isn’t owed them.

Couldn’t a better use be found? (For starters, we can think of some highway potholes that need to be filled.)

Pay retirees what is they’ve earned, certainly, but legislators should investigate payments that are not owed them.

Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund officials should investigate the practice and appear before appropriate legislative committees to explain it.

Thirteenth payments might be seen as a baker’s dozen by pensioners, but they are plain unlucky for taxpayers.

They should be halted.

To the Editor: On behalf of the New Lenox Community Park District Board of Commissioners and the entire park district staff, we would like to congratulate Greg Lewis, our executive director, on being presented with the 2014 “Honored Professional of the Year” award.

The award, given by the Illinois Association of Park Districts, was given to Greg at the annual conference of Park Districts, which is annually held in Chicago in January.

Greg has been with the park district for 25 years; the last 14 years as executive director. Little did anyone know the Celtics would not score again until 6:55 remained in the third quarter and not score their second basket from inside the arc until midway through the fourth quarter.

“I got a little concerned with their outside shooting in the third quarter,” Schodrof said. “They were diagonally skipping passes and hitting their shooters in the corners. They shoot too well. You know they’re not going to miss forever.”

Jasmine Lumpkin chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds for JCA. Jurges led Providence with 16.

“Our girls gave it a phenomenal effort,” Copenhaver said. “I’m really proud of them. And we have only one senior. We’ll have 10 juniors back.”

MORRIS – Nicole Ekhomu and her teammates are more than athletes. They’re thinkers.

Ekhomu was among the Joliet Catholic players who suggested to coach Ed Schodrof that he switch from a man-to-man defense to their bread-and-butter, the 1-3-1 halfcourt trap, after Providence had battled to a 9-9 tie after one quarter in Thursday’s Class 3A Morris Regional final.

The move was sheer genius as the Angels blanked the Celtics, 14-0, in the second quarter to lead 23-9 at halftime en route to a 50-30 victory and a berth in next week’s Lincoln-Way West Sectional.

“I’ll be honest, it was the girls who suggested the switch in the huddle, and she [Ekhomu] was one of them,” Schodrof said.

“Providence has so many shooters, and the man-to-man worked well against them the last time we played.

“The 1-3-1 brought us energy and we were able to get some run-outs that we were not getting earlier.”

“We like to fly around, and the 1-3-1 gives us the energy to do that,” said Ekhomu, who led JCA with 20 points. “We’re at our best in the transition game, getting our offense off steals that we get from the 1-3-1.”

Providence was 0 for 7 from the field and committed eight turnovers in the scoreless second quarter. The Celtics had 16 turnovers by halftime.

“We hurt ourselves in the second quarter,” Providence coach Eileen Copenhaver said. “We knew what we had to do against the 1-31 but didn’t execute. In the third quarter, we needed to get hot, and we didn’t get hot enough to get back in it.”

The landscape has changed in the IHSA Class 4A girls basketball postseason.

The Homewood-Flossmoor girls basketball team and first-year coach Tony Smith, who turned Bolingbrook’s program into one of the state’s best over the previous decade, forfeited their 21 victories this season and were ruled out of the regional tournament Wednesday about an hour before the Vikings were scheduled to meet T.F. North in a regional semifinal.

H-F was ranked among the state’s top teams. The IHSA cited violations committed against two of its bylaws. In January, the parent of an H-F player sued the school, wanting Smith removed as coach and six players who transferred to H-F this school year to be ruled ineligible.

The IHSA decision did not cite those allegations. Its statement said the decision came out of its inquiry and the violations were found after H-F asked the IHSA to review the H-F internal investigation.

Homewood-Flossmoor principal Ryan Pitcock self-reported rules violations, including improper conditioning programs. Pitcock also informed the IHSA that Smith violated rules by attending an AAU event and watching a game in which his players participated.

In the statement, IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman said because other teams in the 4A tournament abided by the rules, disqualifying Homewood-Flossmoor was “the most equitable decision.”

The IHSA cleared all the H-F transfer students before the season, saying they were in compliance with transfer rules.

Four of the six transfers came from Bolingbrook and another previously played at Plainfield East.

Star basketball players also transferred to Bolingbrook to play for Smith through the years. His Raiders’ teams won four state titles, including three straight from 2009 through 2011. Bolingbrook played in six straight championship games under his guidance with runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2008.

The roster of Smith’s Bolingbrook team a couple of years ago had eight seniors who were NCAA Division I recruits.

STAFF REPORTS The IHSA announced the sectional seeds Thursday afternoon for the state’s two largest classes in boys basketball.

The seeds were the result of online voting among the sectional coaches. Bolingbrook was afforded the No. 3 seed in the Class 4A Aurora East Sectional. Benet is 1, Aurora West 2 and Hinsdale Central 4.

In each instance where sectionals are seeded, one of the 1-4 teams and one of the 5-8 seeds will play in each regional when the postseason begins March 3. Regional sites were predetermined, and the host team also will be in its own regional.

In addition to Bolingbrook, other area entries in the 23team Aurora East Sectional are No. 10 Plainfield East, 11 Plainfield North, 16 Lemont and 23 Romeoville. Regional hosts are Plainfield East, Lemont, Aurora West and Naperville Central.

The Joliet area fared relatively well in the other three classes. For instance, in 3A Lincoln-Way West landed the No. 1 seed and Joliet Catholic the 4 seed in the six-team Plano Regional. Morris is No. 1 and Coal City 2 among five teams at the Prairie Central Regional. Peotone is No. 3 at Kankakee.

Regionals will be played next week in Class 2A and 1A. Reed-Custer is the No. 1 seed in the 2A Wilmington Regional, where the host Wildcats are in the fifth and final spot.

Seneca is No. 1 at the Princeton Regional.

In 1A, Dwight landed the second seed and Gardner-South Wilmington is No. 4 in the Gardner Regional.

St. Francis men move into second in CCAC STAFF REPORTS NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of St. Francis moved into a tie for second place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference South Division men’s basketball standings as the result of a 75-52 win Wednesday over host Holy Cross College.

With the victory, USF (1513, 12-6) drew even with Holy Cross in the divisional standings with one regular-season game left to play. The top two teams in each division will host a CCAC Tournament quarterfinal game Wednesday night.

CHAMPAIGN – The 113-pound weight class was regarded as the most-competitive in the IHSA Class 3A field at Thursday’s finals at the State Farm Center.

That’s why Lockport’s Brian Rossi and Plainfield South’s Miguel Silva were happy about their performances after capturing victories over quality opponents.

Rossi won, 9-0, over Marmion Academy’s Anthony Bosco in a clash of nationally-ranked competitors while Trevell Timmons (138) lost in controversial fashion when he fell, 5-3, in overtime to Wheelin’s Munkhtulga Zuunbayan after a last-second stalling penalty.

“In this tournament, there’s no easy way out so you just have to wrestle every opponent that’s presented to you the same way and just wrestle your match,” said Rossi, who has placed third the past two years. “I was definitely ready for today.

And I’ve been focusing on this tournament for the past four years so I’m looking to wrestle the best that I can.”

Lockport advanced five of its six qualifiers and nearly got all of them to the second round. Winning for the Porters were Rossi (113), Shayne Oster (126), Dan Radcliffe (132), Vince Dietz (160) and unbeaten Tyler Johnson (195).

Lincoln-Way Central split its first four opening-round matches. Joey Nelson (132) and unbeaten Bryce Gorman (170) both moved on for the Knights.

Plainfield South advanced one of its two qualifiers. Silva (113), who was a runner-up last year at 106, captured a 5-2 win over St. Rita’s Jake Silzer in his opener.

“This is kind of like the Olympics where you only have four matches, but everybody there is tough,” Silva said. “This is kind of like my own little Olympics. Some people shy away from the opportunity since it’s tough, so they put their heads down but I’m really excited about this.”

Lemont moved two of its three individuals on to the round of eight. Earning wins for the Indians were Egan Berta (126) and Jim Brennan (145).

And in Class 1A, Coal City won four of its five matches. Joey Rivera (106), Cody Minnick (113), Corey Jurzak (126) and Casey Brown (132) all advanced for the Coalers.

Wilmington had a pair of winners among its five qualifiers. They were Austin Headrick (132) and Nick Hawkins (160).

Seneca advanced both of its qualifiers, Sage Friese (126) and Tommy Lovett (182), to Friday’s quarterfinals.

Peotone only had one winner in the opening-round among the eight matches that it participated in.

Tom Ruffino (195) collected that win for the Blue Devils. Dwight’s Anthony Bauer (195) also picked up a win in his opener to move on to the round of eight.

By DAVID PACE The Associated Press SOCHI, Russia – Canada won its fourth straight women’s Olympic hockey title, breaking Thursday’s pattern of first-time winners on the slopes and ice of the Sochi Games.

Down 2-0 in the final period, the Canadians rallied to force overtime, and then won it on Marie-Philip Poulin’s power play goal 8:10 into the extra period. It marked the fourth time the two North American powers have met for the gold. The U.S. won only the sport’s inaugural Olympic title in 1998.

Elsewhere, it was a day of firsts.

France swept the podium in the men’s skicross, claiming all three medals in a Winter Games event for the first time; Adelina Sotnikova gave Russia its first Olympic gold in women’s figure skating.

Canada won its first gold medal in women’s curling; and Maddie Bowman of the US won gold in the debut of women’s halfpipe skiing.

Also, perennial Winter Games power Norway won the Nordic combined team competition – and its games-leading 10th gold medal.

On Day 14 of the Sochi Olympics, a Ukrainian skier withdrew from competitions in response to the deaths of dozens of anti-government protesters in her country.

“I don’t want to participate when in my country, people die,” Bogdana Matsotska told The Associated Press.

Figure skating: The 17-yearold Sotnikova’s victory dropped defending champion Yuna Kim into second place. Julia Lipnitskaia, the Russian sensation with the weight of a nation on her 15-year-old shoulders, again fell during her routine and ended up fifth.

Carolina Kostner of Italy took bronze.

The Russians have won three figure skating gold medals at the Sochi Olympics: team, pairs and women’s.

Only the women’s was a surprise.

Nordic combined: N o r way finished third in the ski jumping and had to start the 20-kilometer race behind. But cross country ski specialist Mangus Moan made up the deficit on the first leg and Norway outdueled Germany and defending champion Austria in the relay.

Germany, which had the lead after the ski jump, took silver and Austria got the bronze.

Curling: Canada’s 6-3 gold

medal victory in women’s Olympic curling came at the expense of Sweden, which had beaten the Canadians for

the title in Vancouver four years ago.

Britain won the bronze by beating Switzerland, 6-5.

INDIANAPOLIS – Bears coach Marc Trestman set the bar for the defense, and it’s high.

The Bears want to see a similar turnaround on defense this season like they saw on offense last season. He told reporters Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine that during a recent staff meeting, he looked at the roster from this point last year and noticed a similarity.

“There were 10 players on the offensive side of the ball that were not on the roster this time of the year and who significantly impacted our football team in the season,” Trestman said. “I just note that because this is a process that we’re going through, filtering through our team, filtering through the free agents and building our team through the draft.”

It’s a lofty expectation. The Bears went from 28th in the league in total offense in Lovie Smith’s in 2012 to eighth under Trestman, and second in points. The defense was the worst in franchise history.

Trestman and Emery used their media availability to discuss the changes made on defense (Shea McClellin to linebacker, new assistants helping a more versatile scheme) and what’s to come through free agency and the draft.

The Bears had the money last year to bring in Martellus Bennett and Jermon Bushrod, and aside from rookies Kyle Long and Jordan Mills, had a veteran group.

The defense will get younger.

“We’re going to be involved in a drafting process here that there’s going to be a lot of young players, they’re all going to be young players and they’re all, for the most part, not all, but for the most part, it’s going to be a defensive-oriented draft in terms of where we’re going,” Trestman said.

Last offseason, Trestman implemented an offensive system.

The Bears brought in some new players, and combined with the returning core, put together a potent unit. The goal is to do the same on defense.

“Last year there were 10 guys on offense we didn’t know we were going to have, but we were putting in a system of offensive football together to accommodate who we had at that time, and that’s exactly the same process we have to go through defensively,” he said.

As of this point, only two players from 2013, however, are certain to return to their same position: cornerback Tim Jennings and linebacker Lance Briggs. The offense from 2012 to 2013 had six players stay in the same spot.

“We need to get our whole team better. Obviously, we want to get our defense better. That’s our goal and that’s what we’ll work to,” Emery said. “What that turns out to be, numberswise, that’s a little theory. Obviously, I love that Marc’s putting pressure on me. That’s a good thing because we have a great relationship – we have a lot of fun together. We want to win championships.”

ust because. That was the reason Trisha Yearwood gave her agent for wanting to schedule a full-band tour.

Yearwood had no new album coming out and nothing to promote.

After their youngest graduates from high school in May, Yearwood and her husband, Garth Brooks, plan to hit the road with a large energetic tour, she said.

But, Yearwood added, she adores the “intimate kind of theater evening,” such as the one she is scheduled to present Feb. 28 at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, just one of 20 stops on this tour, according to a news release from Yearwood’s management company.

“I haven’t done anything like that in several years and I don’t know when I’ll get to do it again,” Yearwood said.

“This is my little window.”

This country superstar deemed her decision “liberating” because since age 5, Yearwood had one goal: a record deal.

“I grew up in a small town.

I had no idea how to go about it,” Yearwood said. “I didn’t know anyone in the music business.”

At 14, Yearwood taught herself to play guitar, which opened up talent shows and wedding bookings for the budding musician.

While attending college in Nashville, Yearwood said, she “met a couple of songwriters in class,” who offered her $10 to make a demo of their songs, launching Yearwood’s twoyear stint as a demo singer.

“I learned what a good song was and a bad song was,” Yearwood said. “When I was ready to make my first album, I got good songs.”

Yearwood, a member of the Grand Ole Opry, has recorded 12 albums, of which nine were No. 1 hits and 20 were Top 10 hits. Yearwood has also received three Grammy awards, three Country Music Awards and two Academy of Country Music awards, according to

the news release.

But Yearwood’s success isn’t limited to music. Her two cookbooks, “Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen” and “Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood” are New York Times bestsellers, according to the news release.

Yearwood’s cookbooks, along with her Food Network show, “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” a winner of the 2013 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Culinary Program and now in its fourth season, according to the news release, is simply the “creative outlet”

that Yearwood enjoys with family and friends.

“We just cut up all day and then film it and edit it,” Yearwood said. “Somehow, it works.”

Writing is so time-consuming, Yearwood said, she had to “carve out” time to do these 20 shows, also important, as it’s “music that feeds her soul.”

Still, Yearwood notices the similarities between her two passions and not because her music is sometimes woven into the cooking programs.

It’s more about the “instant gratification.”

“I just want to make a meal, put it on the table, have everyone take a bite and say, ‘Oh my God, this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten in my life,’ ” Yearwood said. “That’s still applause.”

Although Yearwood can’t imagine performing a concert that didn’t include “She’s in Love With the Boy,” “How Do I Live?” and “Walkaway Joe,” she is open to spontaneous, on-the-spot, in-house requests at each show on this tour.

It’s her way, Yearwood said, of saying “thank you” to her fans’ loyalty and to let them know that, in addition to all that cooking, she’s still singing. Fans may also post song requests on Yearwood’s Facebook page.

She wants to include songs her audience wishes to hear, even if they can’t recall the title and she can’t recall the entire selection.

“I’ll sing what I remember,” Yearwood said.

“I haven’t done anything like that in several years and I don’t know when I’ll get to do it again. This is my little window.”

In both cases, he turns out to have an exceptional talent for killing people, he befriends an African gladiator, and he falls in love with a woman leagues above his social standing. But only in “Pompeii” does the protagonist talk to horses. Milo (Kit Harington from “Game of Thrones”) could be a star if he weren’t stuck in provincial Londinium. Most of the movie is taken up by scene after scene of gladiatorial games, but when Milo isn’t fighting, he’s sharing passionate looks with Cassia and steely glares with Corvus. None of this really matters once the ground begins to shake and Vesuvius wakes from its slumber. Then the movie transitions from a “Gladiator” clone to a less successful Roland Emmerich catastrophe pic. That being said, “Pompeii” does Emmerich one better in the special effects department. Paul W.S. Anderson, best known for the “Resident Evil” franchise and 2011’s “The Three Musketeers,” creates some harrowing simulations of the disaster. It’s enough to make you want him to ditch the story altogether, because as soon as we’re back on the

RATED: PG-13 for violence and some sensuality TIME: 1 hour, 58 minutes VERDICT: “Miracles can happen,” says the trailer for “Winter’s Tale,” starring Colin Farrell and based on the 1983 novel of the same name. Fair enough. But not long into the actual movie, you’ll soon start to doubt

that. Because you’ll realize that this movie truly needs a miracle to save it from ending up a soppy, syrupy mess. And, sorry to say, that miracle never comes. In (lukewarm) defense of screenwriter-director Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”), it’s always tricky to adapt a popular novel. For one thing, people who’ve read it have preconceived notions of how things should be. And Mark Helprin’s novel is a long one, meaning the author had room and time to weave his tale, as subtly as he wanted. But Goldsman employs all the subtlety of a wrecking ball. From the beginning, we’re asked to relinquish all sense of logic and reason, and accept that impossible, unexplainable things are happening. That would all be ine, in a ilm made with wit and charm and a breezy sense of magic. It’s been done. But not here. The good news?

Only this: Colin Farrell is hugely appealing, and his natural charm is almost enough to make you forget the silliness of the rest of it. Almost.

When Mount Vesuvius erupts – feel free to direct spoiler complaints to Pliny the Younger – the movie is completely absorbing. You just have to sit through more than an hour of derivative plot and tired dialogue to get there. The similarities between “Gladiator” and “Pompeii” are hard to overstate. CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.

RATED: PG-13 for sequences of violence and intense action and brief language TIME: 1 hour, 45 minutes VERDICT: Cooling Russo-American relations have yielded an opening for the return of Tom Clancy’s CIA analyst, just in time for the Sochi Olympics.

In the Jack Ryan reboot, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” Chris Pine takes over the lead. Ryan is a navigator of murky, reasonably realistic, international espionage worlds. He has neither James Bond’s preternatural suavity nor Jason Bourne’s visceral butt-kicking skills, but instead anxiously finds his way with patriotic cunning. “Shadow Recruit” is disappointingly formulaic, relying on the familiar set piece-driven story of an implausible heist and a time-bomb finale. Knightley is too strong a force for this girlfriend role. And when the global scheme is figured out in a minute with a bank of computer-searching analysts, one foresees the obsolescence of the action film: sprawling plots undone with a few keystrokes. “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is perhaps most significantly a test for Pine as a movie star. Early in the film, when Ryan is forced to defend his life in a hotel room battle, he ably depicts the shock and horror of a man encountering such a circumstance for the first time. But Pine also fails to make his Jack Ryan more than an afterthought to Baldwin’s know-it-all or Ford’s reluctant hero. As Costner’s character says, he too much resembles “a Boy Scout on a field trip.” –

looks nice. Colors are vibrant, particularly the reddish autumn shades of trees in Liberty Park, in fictional Oakton City, where much of the action takes place. There’s a lovely moment where shimmering water reflects the leaves above. And the whole thing has a period feel – mid20th century – which is appealing, though confusing, too, when you see characters break into what looks like very 21st-century dancing at one point. Like most animated films these days, “The Nut Job,” a joint Canadian-South Korean-U.S. production, trades on its celebrity voices, which here include Katherine Heigl, Brendan Fraser, Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph and, most recognizably, Liam Neeson, who sometimes sounds like he could be on a Shakespearean stage. Not that you could call this dialogue Shakespearean. Or even witty. This being a film about squirrels and their nuts, kids will enjoy the “nut” puns, and parents will groan. – The Associated Press

Some bridge players are superstitious, thinking Lady Luck controls the outcome of deals.

But good players know that normally she has no influence over the final result. Occasionally, though, everything looks like smooth sailing, when suddenly a nasty storm blows up.

What should happen in today’s deal? South is in three no-trump, and West leads his fourth-highest spade.

In the auction, I like North’s jump to three no-trump. If South has a club honor, the chance of five or six club tricks is high.

Along with the spade ace and South’s known values, surely three no-trump will roll home.

It is just Lady Luck’s perversity that South has only two low clubs.

East wins the first trick with his spade king, then should return his remaining spade. Yes, here, a red-suit shift would work even better, but East should try to get the spade ace off the board.

South will win with his spade queen and run the club eight.

Now comes the key play -- East must not take the trick. If East wins, declarer captures the next trick and drives out the club ace, while dummy still has the spade ace as an entry. But if East calmly allows South’s club eight to win, East will take the second club and shift to, probably, the diamond jack. Now dummy’s club suit is useless and the contract goes down one or two.

Afterward, no doubt South will complain that he was unlucky.

If your husband feels he must go, then he should go alone, and you should stop making excuses for your absence.

Last night he forgot to sign out of his email and I saw he has been

corresponding with a woman he met at the meetings. In her message she confided her problems finding a man. His reply was that she has been picking the wrong men, that he cares and that they need to talk face-to-face.

I wish I had never seen the email. Because of it, I can’t eat or sleep, worrying about what might possibly be going on. I don’t want to confront him because he has a nasty temper, yet I feel I must do something. But what? – Lost in Nowhere, Montana Dear Lost: Instead of “confronting” your husband, simply ask him if he has become this woman’s AA sponsor. It might explain why she is confiding in him, and why he suggested they meet face-to-face to talk, which could be entirely innocent. Does he have a history of cheating on you?

If something is going on, it would be better for your emotional health to know what you are dealing with. And if your husband responds with verbal or physical abuse because of his “nasty temper,” you should insist on marriage counseling or get out of there for your own safety.

Non-drug options exist for erectile dysfunction Dear Doctor K: Is acupuncture an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction?

Dear Reader: During an erection, arteries supplying blood widen, and veins leading blood away from the penis clamp down.

As a result, more blood is inside the penis, causing it to swell and become firm. It sounds simple, but getting to an erection requires extraordinary orchestration of blood vessels, nerves, hormones and, of course, the psyche. A hitch in any one of these elements can prevent an erection from happening. Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs have revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is trouble achieving or maintaining an erection. These drugs provide effective and safe treatment for about 70 percent of men with ED. But that still leaves a lot of men with ED who don’t respond to these pills. Other men do not want to use medication, or they can’t use ED drugs because of side ef-

One non-drug treatment used for ED is acupuncture, the ancient Chinese practice in which a practitioner inserts hair-thin needles into specific sites along the body’s “meridians.”

According to traditional beliefs, the body’s Qi (pronounced “chee”), or vital force, flows along these meridians. By stimulating specific acupoints, the practitioner aims to restore the proper flow of energy in the body. In treating ED, the acupuncture needles are placed in the wall of the abdomen.

Western scientists have a different explanation. They speculate that the needles stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Other theories claim the needles release neurotransmitters, chemicals that carry messages between nerve

endings.

Unfortunately, there just hasn’t been enough good research to determine if acupuncture is useful for ED. But there are other non-drug options. Ask your doctor about penile injections, urethral suppositories or a vacuum pump.

There are more studies of acupuncture as a treatment for chronic pain. Some scientists point to studies that compare acupuncture to “sham acupuncture,” in which the needles are deliberately not placed properly.

Such studies sometimes find that both real and sham acupuncture relieve pain. This suggests to them that acupuncture may work by causing a placebo effect.

Whether this is true or not, what matters to patients is that their condition has been improved. Some of my patients have had good relief of their pain.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 14 and I’m given a $5 a week allowance. For that, I’ve got to do all of my chores. Ever since this allowance has been in force, I have always done all of my chores on time. I also must say that my chores are done very well.

I now want to buy a special dress for a semi-formal, girlask-boy dance at our school. I have already invited the boy, and he said yes. The dress I want costs $75, and I have $50 saved.

Dear Marsha: According to a report by the United States Jaycees, about 4 million Americans are addicted to cocaine, and 12 million Americans are considered to be alcoholics.

These are both shocking statistics.

That means 16 million Americans cannot control their lives and live in constant confusion and turmoil. I’m sure your “wine at dinner” won’t escalate to an alcohol addiction, but always remember that every alcoholic started out having a first alcoholic drink.

Dear Abby: I have been married to a wonderful man for 17 years and we have two children. My life should be perfect, and it is -- until it’s time to visit my in-laws.

We don’t see them more than a few times a year, but I’ve taken to pleading work as an excuse not to see them on holidays or special occasions if I can avoid it. I have even spent Christmas at home alone because I can’t stand how verbally abusive my in-laws are.

My mother-in-law admits to being mean and nasty. She says she doesn’t care because she “hates people.” They are now pressuring my husband to move nearer to them. The thought makes me sick.

My life could have been so different if these relatives were nice, normal people. I wanted us to be friends. I’m a kind person, but I have never been good enough for them. I would never dream of saying some of the things they have said to me. They’re upper middle class and I’m “trash.” I never thought when I married my husband that his family would enjoy making me miserable.

The Easter holidays are coming and I don’t know what to do.

I’m afraid one day the buildup of anger will make me explode. How can I make their verbal abuse

‘Pompeii’: Haven’t we seen this all before?

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post “Pompeii” has a killer ending. Billowing clouds of ash swallow the ancient Roman town and fireballs rain down from above; whole city blocks slide into the sea and a tsunami tears through the streets, leveling everything in its path.

When Mount Vesuvius erupts – feel free to direct spoiler complaints to Pliny the Younger – the movie is completely absorbing. You just have to sit through more than an hour of derivative plot and tired dialogue to get there.

The similarities between “Gladiator” and “Pompeii” are hard to overstate.

In both cases you have a warrior who’s enslaved after his family is murdered.

In both cases he turns out to have an exceptional talent for killing people, he befriends an African gladiator and he falls in love with a woman leagues above his social standing.

But only in “Pompeii” does the protagonist talk to horses. Milo is the last member of a Celtic tribe of equestrians who are massacred by Roman soldiers led by Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland) and

his right-hand man Proculus (Sasha Roiz). Milo manages to escape his parents’ fate at age 6, but he’s scooped up, enslaved and, years later, becomes a killing machine who can enter an arena unarmed and take out three sword-wielding opponents. Milo (Kit Harington from “Game of Thrones”) could be a star if he weren’t stuck in provincial Londinium.

And so he’s sent to Pompeii. Along the way he meets Cassia (Emily Browning), the daughter of a powerful politician, and notices that the two people he’d most like to kill – Corvus and Proculus – also happen to be in town. To make matters worse, Corvus has his eye on Cassia. Most of the movie is taken up by scene after scene of gladiatorial games, but when Milo isn’t fighting, he’s sharing passionate looks with Cassia and steely glares with Corvus.

None of this really matters once the ground begins to shake and Vesuvius wakes from its slumber. Then the movie transitions from a “Gladiator” clone to a less successful Roland Emmerich catastrophe pic. Say what you will about the man behind “White House Down” and

“Independence Day,” but the character developments in those movies look pretty good compared to the scant dialogue and simplistic personalities in Milo’s world.

That being said, “Pompeii” does Emmerich one better in the special effects department. Paul W.S. Anderson, best known for the “Resident Evil” franchise and 2011’s “The Three Musketeers,” creates some harrowing simulations of the disaster. It’s enough to make you want him to ditch the story altogether, because as soon as we’re back on the ground with Corvus in a chariot chased by Milo, some of the images are so clearly computer-generated that the drama drains right out of the moment.

Harington’s star is on the rise. He’ll star opposite Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in the upcoming film “The Seventh Son,” and he’s signed on for the movie adaptation of the popular British television series “Spooks.” Yet his first starring role doesn’t showcase what he can do from an acting standpoint. Harington transformed his body for the role, but here’s the real disaster: His startlingly defined six-pack abs are the most memorable part of his character.
