Local opponents speak out against Illiana Expressway

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com The latest proposed path for the Illiana Expressway cuts right through 85-year-old Louis Rodawold’s property.

“I’ve been a farmer all my life. I’ve worked hard and then somebody comes along and takes it,” said Rodawold, who was among the 350-plus people filtering in and out of the Local 150 training facilities in Wilmington Wednesday night for a public hearing regarding the proposed $1.3 billion highway project.

Rodawold is one of the several residents living along the planned Illiana Expressway, which would connect Interstate 55 in Wilmington to Interstate 65 near Lowell, Ind. The Illinois and Indiana transportation departments conducted two public hearings this week to give people a chance to speak for or against the project and to discuss the latest environmental impact study that was released at the end of January. The first of two hearings was held in Lowell, Ind., on Tuesday.

Agency officials say the proposed route must win federal approval before the state can do land acquisition and

The Illiana Corridor would have 11 interchanges, eight of which would be in Illinois, and traverses an area that is largely undeveloped, rural and agricultural, and as a result, housing-related impacts from the proposed project are expected to be minimal, according to IDOT’s latest environmental impact study.

The latest proposed route calls for about 42 residents, 29 farmsteads and five businesses to relocate, and impacts about 3,100 acres of farmland, according to the study’s summary, made available on IDOT’s Illiana website.

Land acquisitions would not start until the project is approved by the U.S. Highway Department, which could come as early as May. Construction could start as early as 2015.

IDOT and INDOT officials have estimated that the proposed highway will raise $70 million in tax revenue in the first five years and $340 million over a 30-year period.

The majority of people at Wednesday’s public hearing spoke out against the expressway.

While pointing to his family’s several properties on an oversized map laid across tables in one of the Local 150’s training rooms, Tom Spangler, 57, explained that the proposed route impacts seven parcels of his family’s farmland, including his, which is located about a half-mile east of Symerton.

“The truck traffic I hear right now is a half-mile away.

With this expressway, it’ll be 400 feet away,” Spangler said.

“My dad was born in that home 87 years ago. It’s an original family homestead.”

Will County Board Member Judy Ogalla, R-Monee, said Wednesday before the meeting that many of her constituents are concerned that the planned road closures could slow response time for police and fire and the discussed high toll fees could inadvertently steer truck drivers away from using the route.

“It will seem like we’ll get a little bit of everything in the next 24 hours,” Andrew Krein, of the National Weather Service, said Wednesday afternoon.

Everything could include freezing rain, snow, thunderstorms, fog, winds and the po-

tential for flooding.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook through Thursday, noting the possibility of severe thunderstorms hitting an area of northeastern Illinois that includes Will, Grundy and Kendall counties.

A “wintry mix” of freezing rain and snow was expected to start about 4 a.m. Thursday and change to all rain a few hours later that should last throughout the day. Will and Grundy counties will be under a flood watch Thursday afternoon.

The dense snowpack and large amount of rain will likely cause flooding concerns in

the area.

Winds will begin to pick up by late morning and fog may come in as well, Krein said.

That will give way to thunderstorms until Thursday evening.

“That will be followed by a strong cold front, which will end the rain,” Krein said.

“Temperatures won’t drop so much from the cold front, but it will strengthen the winds even more.”

A strong low-pressure system developing over the South Plains is expected to pass into northwestern Illinois and Wisconsin, which is going to drag humid air into our area, Krein said.

Area snowmobiling club offers advice to beginners

JOLIET – There are people who like all the snow that came this winter – snowmobilers.

But even with the more than 60 inches of snow that has fallen here, snowmobilers travel out of Will County for more open spaces and – believe it or not – more snow.

The rewards of snowmobiling are worth the trip, they say.

Snowmobiling offers more of an experience than skiing or sledding for David Kaleta.

Kaleta, member of Plainfield-based Rusty Runners Snowmobile Club, has been riding snowmobiles since he was 5 and one of the thrills he gets out of it is being in nature. When he’s out in wooded or remote areas, he’s able to see wildlife such as deer, foxes, moose and elk.

“You won’t see that going down a ski hill,” he said.

Snowmobiling is also more inclusive among age groups.

Kaleta said he has one friend who is about 70 years old and together they drove more than 280 miles in one day. They got to see Lake Superior during their trip.

He said he came away with a feeling that was “almost kind of like a high.”

Kaleta and other members of the Rusty Runners Snowmobile Club usually don’t get those highs by riding in the Will County area. Even with heavy snowfall this winter – and biting subzero temperatures – area weather conditions are not as suitable for snowmobiling as areas in northern Illinois or out of state.

But for those interested in enjoying snowmobiling, Kaleta and club president Craig Hill shared some advice on how to get started.

Like Kaleta, Hill said he enjoys snowmobiling because he gets to experience nature along the snowmobile trails he rides in Wisconsin and Michigan. The vehicle offers the same sense of independence that a motorcycle does, he said.

“You still get the need for speed with those,” he said.

Kaleta said he recommends prospective riders take safety classes from certified instructors because it will not only familiarize them with the sport but show them how to dress and what survival tactics to use.

He said he’s been an instructor for nine years and has been certified by the

Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which offers snowmobile safety education courses.

Renting snowmobiles is cheaper than buying new ones, he said. Snowmobiles can be rented for up to $250, while new vehicles can cost between $8,000 to $15,000.

There’s not much opportunity to ride around in snowmobiles in Will County. Hill said Plainfield used to be a good spot for riding, but more new subdivisions pushed snowmobilers to areas along the I & M Canal.

Illinois has nearly 2,500 miles of trails provided by local clubs and private landowners, according to the Illinois

Association of Snowmobile Clubs. The state of Illinois offers state-managed trails but requires a minimum of 4 inches of snow on the trail for snowmobile use.

Kaleta said snowmobile riders either ride in northern Illinois or in other states such as Minnesota, Wyoming or South Dakota because of the limited designated riding areas in Will County. He said when there’s only 4 inches of snow on the ground in a 65-mile or less trail, the snow can be worn down quickly by riding in it.

Snowmobiling is still a popular activity in the area.

Kaleta said the Rusty Runners have been in Plainfield for

roughly 36 years and it has about 35 active members. But at one point the club had more than 100 families as members.

“It’s something as a family you can do together,” he said.

“Skiing is OK because it’s kind of restrictive. ... It’s really more of a solo thing.”

Everybody who is a member of a club or rides a snowmobile works well with each other, Hill said, which can be helpful when accidents arise. Riders should always ride in pairs, he said.

“I’ve had times when I broke down in the trail and you’re out in the middle of nowhere,” he said. “[People] will help you. ... Everybody is very friendly.”

Mother in ‘loud music’ Joliet watches for trial has local support flooding this week

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Lucia McBath has found some local support from Joliet amid the national attention paid to the so-called “loud music” trial for the man who killed McBath’s son.

McBath once lived in Joliet and still has relatives and friends in the area, some of whom traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., to support her. Her father, Dr. Lucien Holman, was a local dentist who headed the Illinois NAACP during the 1960s.

“She’s been a tremendous mother, very hard-working and for her to go through this is a tragedy,” said Warren Dorris, pastor at Prayer Tower Church of God In Christ in Joliet.

Dorris said friends in Joliet have gone to Florida to support her through the trial and still are there. Dorris has not spoken to McBath recently, but said he had talked with her relatives and was following the trial through the media coverage.

The shooting death of McBath’s son, Jordan Davis, 17, has raised questions about race relations and justice as a jury in Florida weighed claims by the shooter that he fired in self-defense.

On Saturday, the jury found Michael Dunn guilty of attempted murder for firing into a SUV at a Jacksonville, Fla., convenience store on Nov. 23, 2012. But jurors deadlocked on the charge against Dunn, 47, for the murder of Jordan Davis.

McBath has told media outlets that she has gotten some closure from the fact that Dunn will spend at least 60 years in prison, but the hung jury on the murder charge has “denied ... justice for my boy.”

Florida prosecutors have announced plans to try Dunn again, which Dorris said McBath knows won’t bring her son back, but will “give the family the additional closure they need.”

But when the ground is frozen and many drains are blocked, the city of Joliet is worried the expected rains and melting this week will cause flooding.

“If we start getting hit, there’s no place for water to go. The rivers are frozen over and the ground is frozen,” Greg Sebben, director of Joliet’s emergency management agency, said Wednesday.

Even if the storms hit farther south as predicted, high winds also could cause problems in the Joliet area, Sebben said.

Warmer temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday already have started getting rid of some snow, but adding wet precipitation to frozen precipitation might be too much of a good thing.

“A slow rain would be great, but if it’s a fast rain, it’ll be the worst thing for us,” Public Works Director Jim Trizna said.

day, crews cleared snow around catch basins so water can drain along curbs. “[As you plow streets] you can only push snow back so far, so they’ve narrowed away from the curbs,” Trizna said. “Keeping those free is one way we can be proactive for the weather, and we’ve seen some residents do that in front of their house on their own.”

Public works also willbe concerned with the viaducts on Henderson Avenue and Route 30 by Pilcher Park, which are typically the first to flood with heavy rain.

The neighborhoods around Essington Road and Ingalls Avenue will be watched, as well.

“There are some unincorporated areas that don’t have city drains and they were built long before stormwater detention was put in,” Trizna said.

Hickory Creek and Spring Creek were low when they froze, but will be monitored by the fire department, Trizna said.

Sebben, Trizna and other city officials will monitor weather reports and review their plans Wednesday evening and early Thursday.

Fresh Thyme Market to move into MyGofer space

Fresh Thyme Market will move into part of the former MyGofer store outside of the Louis Joliet Mall, Mayor Tom Giarrante said Wednesday.

He said he has been meeting with representatives from the company for the past several weeks.

According to the company website, Fresh Thyme Mar-

ket combines the “spirit of a weekend farmers market and the convenience of a neighborhood store.”

“They explained it as if Whole Foods married Trader Joe’s and had a baby, and that baby would be Fresh Thyme,” Giarrante said.

He did not have a date for when the new store will open.

Fresh Thyme Market will take up 30,000 square feet of the former MyGofer store.

The building originally was a Kmart store.

Joliet resident calls for Susie Barber to resign

That’s what District 4 resident John Sheridan would like to know.

“It’s time to talk about the elephant in the room,” Sheridan told the Joliet City Council at its regular session Tuesday.

The District 4 Joliet city councilwoman has been ill since leaving an Aug. 19 meeting in an ambulance. Since then, she has missed 21 consecutive meetings.

“It’s now been 183 days,” Sheridan said.

“Enough is enough. “ P l e a s e consider sub- Susie Barber mitting your District 4 resignation for councilwoman the good of your constituents,” Sheridan said.

“They need a voice and more importantly a vote. Please Susie, it’s time to do the right thing.”

Sheridan noted that Barber’s health was more important than her council seat, which he equated to “a parttime job.”

Barber missed three consecutive City Council meetings in April 2013, when there

were rumors that she was about to resign. But when she returned to the meetings, Barber said she intended to serve the remainder of her term into 2015 and had been dealing with health issues.

Calls to Barber on Wednesday went unanswered.

Sheridan also suggested that the council create formal job descriptions for both itself and the mayor, as well as create an ordinance covering the recall of elected officials.

Either action, however, is probably beyond the scope of the council’s authority, City Attorney Jeff Plyman said.

Rules and regulations regarding elected officials are overseen by the state, not the city, and any expulsion rule would require a public referendum to enact, Plyman told the council.

“You can make proposals and put things on the ballot, but you don’t have the authority to make it so with five votes,” Plyman said.

Still, the idea of something less than formal job descriptions struck a chord with the council.

Mayor Tom Giarrante, following a suggestion from Councilman Larry Hug, agreed that the council’s legislative committee further explore the issue.

Drug arrests made at restaurant

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Two men were allegedly caught with heroin Monday in the bathroom of a fast food restaurant.

Lt. Mike Rompa said officers from the Problem-Oriented Policing Unit were called about 7:50 p.m. to Burger King, 331 S. Bolingbrook Drive, after witnesses suspected drug activity.

Police arrived to find Robert A. Lenning, 44, of the 300 block of East Washington Street in Joliet, and Kevin J. Thompson, 25, of the 16000 block of South Legion Court in Plainfield, with heroin, Rompa

said.

Thompson allegedly fought with the police as he was taken into custody and was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, drug possession, marijuana possession, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jail records indicate Thompson previously has been arrested on charges of marijuana possession, domestic battery, criminal trespassing, vandalism and possession of a stolen firearm.

Jail records indicate Lenning has been jailed twice for driving on a suspended license.

Both men are being held on $20,000 bond.

Crest Hill moves forward on sewage treatment plant

John Tomasoski Crest Hill city administrator Works Mike Greenan said, adding that the last upgrades in 1993 have worn out their welcome. “We’re doing the best we can, and now that we have a chance to get a low-interest loan for a new plant.”

Greenan said the main point of the new plant isn’t to increase the capacity, but to revamp and make processes work more efficiently, including filtration treatment and removing solids before water flows back into receiving streams.

Land bought on Route 30 The City Council authorized the city to purchase two plots of land near city hall, which is at U.S. Route and Theodore Street, after discussing it in closed session.

The plots are located at 1620 Plainfield Road and 1701 Knapp Drive and will cost an estimated $330,000, according to City Attorney Heather McGuire.

Soliman said there is no designated use of the land yet, but it could be useful for future expansion.

“It’s a great opportunity and good decision by the City Council to purchase property next to City Hall,” Soliman said. “This will be a tremendous asset to our city moving forward.”

The council also discussed negotiations for a contract with the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 150 during closed session, but didn’t take any action.

CREST HILL – The Crest Hill City Council is moving ahead on plans to build a new sewage treatment plant for the western part of the city after authorizing bonds for up to $20.3 million.

The council on Tuesday also approved the purchase of land near the city administrative building.

The money from the bonds will be used to pay for a treatment plant to replace the one on the northwest corner of Theodore Street and Gaylord Road. The new facility would cost about $20 million, include technological updates and meet regulations for phosphorous output.

“One of the major responsibilities of the City Council is to make upgrades and necessary improvements to an aging infrastructure system and a sewage treatment plant that meets the requirements of the [Illinois Environmental Protection Agency],” Mayor Ray Soliman said. “I think we did our homework. It’s more cost-effective to build a new treatment plant.”

The current sewage treatment plant was built in 1968 and is past due for replacement, according to City Administrator John Tomasoski.

“The plant is past its useful life,” Tomasoski said. “Upgrades happened in the 1990s, but we don’t have much of a choice to build a new one quite frankly.”

City engineers are in the process of filling out paperwork for a low-interest IEPA loan. The loan would result in interest savings of about $6,000 compared with traditional bonds, according to Tomasoski.

• Christopher J. Riley, 28, of the 900 block of South Church Street in Princeton, was arrested by Bolingbrook police Monday on a charge of drug possession.

JOLIET – The first phase of an audit of financial activities by Housing Authority of Joliet’s former Chief financial officer Charlene Potts has found no evidence of impropriety here.

Potts was charged in an alleged $200,000 embezzlement scheme involving her former work with the Chicago Housing Authority between 2005 and 2008. Potts began working at the Joliet agency in 2010, and was promoted to CFO in August 2011.

The forensic audit by the accounting firm of Wermer, Rogers, Doran & Ruzon focused on how the alleged CHA embezzlement took place, and then tested for similar activity at HAJ. Auditors examined all checks for alterations over a two-month period near the

end of Potts’ employment in Joliet. The audit examined payees as recorded on HAJ books against payees on canceled checks. No alterations were found.

“Internal controls in place, particularly the requirement that all checks be manually signed, made it much harder to alter checks without someone noticing,” HAJ Chief Executive Officer Michael Simelton said in a statement.

A second phase of the audit will check transactions with new vendors that were not used by HAJ before Potts’ arrival. The audit will focus on vendor activity, support documents, vendor confirmation and other procedures.

Based on what the audit reveals, HAJ will determine whether additional investigation is warranted.

JOLIET – A kitchen fire damaged apartments Wednesday morning in the Lois Place complex.

Battalion Chief LaRoy Aldredge said the fire was reported at 11:20 a.m. in the 11-unit building in the 900 block.

“The fire started in a kitchen in a lower-level unit and damaged the one behind it and two above,” Aldredge said. The other units in the building suffered smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire still was under investigation Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters had been to the building Tuesday after ice falling from the roof broke a two-inch gas line that had to be replaced by Nicor workers, Aldredge said.

Ben was born to Walter Edward and Susan Elinor Robinson. He spent his youth in Wilton Center and made his family home in Manhattan, Illinois for over thirty years before retiring to Missouri and California. They returned to their homeland in 2003, and resided in the area until his death.

Ben was a veteran of World War II and served as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Corps in Kansas City, Missouri and Pampa, Texas.

Ben met his bride, Leora Mildred Pollick, in Kansas City, Missouri and they married on September 6, 1944 in Joliet,Illinois. They were happily married for more than sixty-nine

Ill. Senate Republicans outline budget demands turing, criticizing Gov. Pat Quinn’s postponement of his annual budget address until after the March 26 primary.

More than 200,000 jobs listed in Illinois in Jan. CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Employment Security says employers in the state advertised more than 208,400 jobs online in January.

That figure is down from 215,000 in December. But department Director Jay Rowell on Tuesday called the January number evidence that good-paying jobs are abundant in Illinois.

The state has one of the country’s highest unemployment rates. The figure was 8.6 percent in December, the most recent month available.

The department said the job with the single largest number of openings listed was truck driver. More than 7,000 positions were listed.

Other jobs with large numbers

of listings included registered nurses, retail sales people, marketing managers and retail supervisors.

More than half of the listings were on the state’s Illinoisjoblink.com site.

RTA chairman plans to step down in June CHICAGO – The chairman of the Regional Transportation Authority says he’ll step down from the post this summer.

In a statement released Wednesday, the agency says John S. Gates Jr. won’t run for re-election in June and is leaving the transit agency’s board.

The 60-year-old was elected to the post in 2010. He is also chairman and CEO of PortaeCo LLC, a private investment company.

The RTA oversees Metra, the Chicago Transit Authority and Pace, the three Chicago area public transportation agencies.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Senate Republicans gave Democrats a list of conditions Wednesday that must be met before they’ll sign off on a budget, an early signal of the tense negotiations ahead as lawmakers scramble to fill an anticipated $3 billion gap in state revenues.

Answering a challenge from Democrats to present a counter plan, the GOP lawmakers announced their list of demands Wednesday at a Capitol news conference. Earlier this week, Democratic Senate President John Cullerton warned of a $3 billion budget hole next year. That includes a $1.6 billion revenue dip if the state’s temporary income tax increase expires as scheduled in January 2015, as well as about $1.3 billion in increased costs to required programs and services.

“If they want us to work with them, there are [several] things they’re going to have to recognize and commit to,” Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno of Lemont said, noting numerous GOP budget proposals have been “mocked” and “buried in committee” in past years.

Among the laundry list of items Republicans want in place are rolling back the tax increase as promised, implementing additional worker compensation reforms and instituting a moratorium on the creation of new state programs or the expansion of existing ones. They also want a proposal for a shift to a graduated income tax, essentially making the wealthy pay more, taken off the table.

Low inflation has slowed growth

By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Since the Great Recession ended 4½ years ago, Americans have struggled with high unemployment, static pay and a slow economy. Yet they’ve had one thing in their favor: low inflation.

Well, hold the applause.

It might be unfathomable to people who still bear scars from the double-digit inflation of the 1970s, but what the global economy could use right now is a dose of higher prices.

Overall prices are barely budging because the economy is still weak. And the reverse may be true, too: Super-low inflation has likely slowed growth from the United States to Japan to Europe. It’s why

the world’s central banks would like prices to rise.

Most people aren’t likely to work up much anxiety about low inflation. After all, the benefits can be great.

Cellphone service has gotten cheaper. Breakfast cereal prices have dropped the past two years. So has the cost of bedroom furniture. TV prices have plummeted 29 percent since 2012.

And low inflation is surely preferable to runaway inflation. Back in 1980, U.S. inflation reached 13.5 percent.

Last year, overall U.S. prices inched up just 1.1 percent, according to the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge. Inflation has stayed below the Fed’s 2 percent target for two years. On Wednesday, the government said its produc-

Los Angeles bishop kept altar boy list from police

By GILLIAN FLACCUS The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – When Los Angeles police were investigating allegations of child abuse by a Roman Catholic priest in 1988, they asked for a list of altar boys at the last parish where the priest worked.

Archbishop Roger Mahony told a subordinate not to give the list, saying he didn’t want the boys to be scarred by the investigation and that he felt the altar boys were too old to be potential victims, according to a February 2013 deposition made public Wednesday.

The detectives investigating allegations against Nicolas Aguilar Rivera, a visiting Mexican priest, ultimately got the names of the boys from parish families. They determined the priest molested at least 26 boys during his 10 months in Los Angeles, according to the priest’s confidential archdiocese file and police records made public

by attorneys for the victims.

Twenty-five of the alleged victims were altar boys and the 26th was training with the priest to be one, said Anthony DeMarco, a plaintiff attorney.

Mahony’s deposition was obtained by The Associated Press and is part of the evidence included in a settlement of abuse claims against Aguilar Rivera and four other priests. The archdiocese, the nation’s largest, agreed to pay $13 million to 17 victims.

Internal church files kept on priests accused of abuse were released last year under court order. They showed that Mahony, who was elevated to cardinal and retired in 2011, maneuvered behind the scenes with his top aide, Monsignor Thomas Curry, to shield molester priests, provide damage control for the church and keep parishioners in the dark. When the files were released, prosecutors said the cases fell outside the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution of any church officials.

What’s wrong with very low inflation?

Lots. When prices barely move, many people postpone purchases. Why rush, if the same price – or lower – will be available in six months?

Collectively, these delays slow consumer spending, the economy’s main fuel.

Ultra-low inflation also makes the inflation-adjusted cost of a loan more expensive.

And too-low inflation raises the prospect of something worse: deflation – a broad

decline in prices, pay and the value of stocks, homes or other assets. Deflation can further restrain spending and even tip an economy into recession.

Just ask the Japanese.

Japan has been stuck in a deflationary trap for most of two decades. Its economy has barely grown. Fears have spiked that Europe might be next.

For now, prices in Europe are ticking up – barely. Inflation in the 18 nations that use the euro currency rose 0.7 percent in January from a year earlier. In Japan, consumer prices rose 0.4 percent for 2013.

That counts for good news: It was Japan’s first overall price increase in five years. Its central bank is trying to lift inflation to 2 percent.

Gov’t nixes license plate data plan

By ALICIA A. CALDWELL The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The Homeland Security Department abruptly reversed course Wednesday and dropped plans to ask a private company to give the government access to a nationwide database of license plate tracking information.

Secretary Jeh Johnson directed that a contract proposal issued last week be canceled.

The proposal said Immigration and Customs Enforcement was planning to use the license plate data in pursuit of criminal immigrants and others sought by authorities.

Gillian Christensen, an ICE spokeswoman, said the contract solicitation was posted “without the awareness of ICE leadership.”

“While we continue to support a range of technologies to help meet our law enforcement mission, this solicitation will be reviewed to ensure the path forward appropriately meets our operational needs,” Christensen

said.

The department said Johnson has ordered a review of the proposal.

The contract notice came amid growing concerns about government surveillance of U.S. citizens but didn’t address potential privacy consequences.

Before the notice was canceled, Christensen said the database “could only be accessed in conjunction with ongoing criminal investigations or to locate wanted individuals.”

Law enforcement has been using license plate readers for several years, but privacy advocates have raised concerns that the unchecked collection of such information could allow for the tracking of an average citizen’s every movement. Lawmakers around the country, meanwhile, have been wrestling with whether or how to control the collection and use of license plate data.

At least 14 states are considering measures that would curb surveillance efforts, including the use of license plate readers.

BRIEFS Zimbabwe: Former Rep. Reynolds pleads not guilty HARARE, Zimbabwe – Visibly exhausted, former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds pleaded not guilty in a Zimbabwe court on Wednesday to charges of possessing pornography and must spend another night in jail before he can apply for bail.

Reynolds was arrested at a Harare hotel Monday and has already spent two nights in jail. He will appear in court again on Thursday for his bail hearing. Also on Thursday, he will be asked to enter a plea on a separate charge of breaking Zimbabwe’s immigration laws.

‘Mockingbird’ author settles museum lawsuit BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – “To Kill a Mockingbird” author Harper Lee has settled the federal lawsuit she filed against a museum in her south Alabama hometown over its sale of souvenirs featuring her name and the title of her book, court documents show.

An attorney for the Alabama native filed a motion Tuesday in federal court in Mobile saying Lee had reached an agreement with the Monroe County Heritage Museum in Monroeville.

The settlement notice came days after a judge refused to dismiss the lawsuit, filed last fall, that said the museum uses Lee’s name and the title of her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel without compensating her. The document didn’t provide details on the settlement, and a lawyer for the museum, Matthew Goforth, declined to comment Wednesday. He cited the terms of settlement negotiations.

By JENNIFER C. KERR The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Should shoppers turn off their smartphones when they hit the mall? Or does having them on lead to better sales or shorter lines at the cash register?

Retailers are using mobile-based technology to track shoppers’ movements at some malls and stores. The companies collecting the information say it’s anonymous, can’t be traced to a specific person and no one should worry about invasion of privacy. But consumer advocates aren’t convinced. It’s spying, they say, and shoppers should be informed their phones are being observed and choose whether to allow it.

The Federal Trade Commission held a workshop Wednesday on the issue, part of a series of privacy seminars looking at emerging technologies and the impact on consumers. FTC attorney Amanda Koulousias says the commission wants to better understand how compa-

nies are using phone-location technology, how robust privacy controls are and whether shoppers are notified in advance. Here’s how the technology works: • Your smartphone has a unique identifier code – a MAC address – for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It’s a 12-character string of letters and numbers.

Think of it like a Social Security or vehicle identification number, but this address is not linked to personal information, like your name, email address or phone number. The numbers and letters link only to a specific phone.

• When your smartphone is turned on, it sends out signals with that MAC address (for media access control) as it searches for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Those signals can be captured by sensors in stores that could tell a department store how often shoppers visit, how long they stay, whether they spend more time in the shoe department, children’s clothing section or sporting goods.

WASHINGTON – Show more patience in the delivery room: That’s the prescription being given to the nation’s obstetricians.

New guidelines say doctors should give otherwise healthy women more time to deliver their babies vaginally before assuming that labor has stalled. The recommendations are the latest in years of efforts to prevent unnecessary C-sections.

“Labor takes a little longer than we may have thought,” said Dr. Aaron Caughey, who co-authored the guidelines for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

The recommendations are being published jointly Thursday by two groups of pregnancy specialists – ACOG and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine – amid growing con-

cern that C-sections are overused.

Nearly 1 in 3 women in the U.S. gives birth by cesarean.

Yes, C-sections can be life-saving for mother or baby. But they also can be done for convenience or fear of lawsuits, and the surgery can bring some serious health risks. And having one cesarean greatly increases the chances that a subsequent pregnancy will end in one, too.

One of the main reasons for a first-time C-section is labor that’s progressing too slowly, ACOG’s analysis found.

How long should labor take?

There’s no clear-cut deadline, and every woman is different, stressed Caughey, obstetrics chairman at the Oregon Health and Sciences University.

“My patients ask this every day,” he said. He tells them it can “run the gamut from six hours long, start to finish, to three and four days” at the other extreme.

Protest leaders, Ukraine president, agree on truce

By MARIA DANILOVA and YURAS KARMANAU The Associated Press KIEV, Ukraine – Ukraine’s embattled president and leaders of the protests that have been roiling the country agreed Wednesday on a truce to halt the violence that has killed 26 people and injured more than 425 others. A protest leader was quoted as saying the government pledged not to attack an opposition encampment in central Kiev while further negotiations unfold.

President Viktor Yanukovych met with opposition leaders and the two sides agreed to halt the violence and to hold talks on ending bloodshed, a statement on the presidential website said. The statement did not give any further details.

Vitali Klitschko, one of the leaders of the protests that have sought to keep Ukraine open to Europe and out of a close politi-

cal and economic alliance with Russia, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying that Yanukovych agreed that there would be no attempt to storm the protesters’ encampment on the main square of downtown Kiev.

Flames from burning barricades of tires and refuse leapt into the air at the square for a second night, as protesters demanding Yanukovych’s resignation showed no sign of yielding.

The truce announcement came hours after the president replaced the army chief and the military vowed a national anti-terrorist operation to restore order. Officials have often referred to the protesters who have demanded Yanukovych’s resignation for months as “terrorists.”

The recent violence has been the worst in nearly three months of anti-government protests that have paralyzed Kiev.

Hacking trial: Tony Blair offered to advise Murdoch

By JILL LAWLESS The Associated Press LONDON – Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair offered to work as an unofficial adviser to Rupert Murdoch as revelations of illegal phone hacking engulfed the mogul’s media empire, according to an email made public Wednesday at the trial of several former Murdoch lieutenants.

Prosecutor Andrew Edis read aloud an email sent by Rebekah Brooks, then chief executive of Murdoch’s British newspapers, to Murdoch’s son and deputy James on July 11, 2011.

In it, Brooks said she had spent an hour on the phone with Blair, who had told her: “It will pass. Tough up.”

Brooks also wrote that Blair “is available for you, KRM [Rupert Murdoch] and me as an unofficial adviser, but needs to be between us.”

She said Blair suggested Murdoch’s company set up an external committee into phone hacking, which would “publish a Hutton-style report.” The 2004 Hutton Report cleared Blair’s government of wrongdoing over its handling of intelligence about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction.

Blair was Britain’s leader between 1997 and 2007, winning three consecutive elections. Since leaving office he has become a highly paid, globe-trotting consultant to corporations and governments, a public speaker and a Middle East envoy for the international Quartet. He remains dogged by criticism of his decision to take Britain into the 2003 U.S.-led war in Iraq.

Brooks, who was chief executive of Murdoch’s News International when the hacking scandal erupted, was close to Blair and to the current prime

minister, David Cameron.

Blair’s office confirmed that the conversation with Brooks took place, but said Blair was “simply giving informal advice over the phone.”

In a statement, Blair’s office said he had stressed to Brooks that “it was essential to have a fully transparent and independent process to get to the bottom of what had happened.”

Six days after sending the email, on July 17, 2011, Brooks was arrested. She was charged with conspiring to hack phones, bribe officials and obstruct a police investigation.

She and six others are on trial on charges stemming from the revelation that News of the World employees eavesdropped on the voicemails of celebrities, politicians, sports figures, royalty and even crime victims. Murdoch closed the 168-year-old tabloid amid a wave of public outrage.

New hope for Bowe Bergdahl’s release We know from the ups and downs of the past four and a half years that anecdotal evidence and positive signals regarding Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s release can circle back to the path of heartbreak and frustration for his Idaho family and the nation.

The news Tuesday that President Barack Obama and the U.S. State Department were attempting to update or “refresh” some kind of prisoner swap marks an important dot on the continuum that could lead to Bergdahl’s ultimate release. For this we are optimistic and grateful.

Other dots include actions both in the U.S. and in the Afghanistan war zone, where Bergdahl was taken prisoner in 2009.

A film purportedly depicting Bergdahl a month ago seemed to be saying, yes, we still have him and here he is, let’s make a deal.

tirelessly to get his situation and plight before the American people in a number of creative ways, bracelets and billboards to name a few. He is certainly not anonymous, and both sides know there is something to be gained by continuing to talk.

Going back just a bit further in time to last summer, a prisoner swap deal with affiliates of his Taliban captors in Afghanistan seemed to be getting traction until – as has often been the case – prospects of Bowe Bergdahl’s release slipped again below the skyline of hope.

The news Tuesday showed a recent shift in U.S. policy: Instead of releasing Taliban prisoners piecemeal in order to make a determination of a good faith deal, the U.S. is now ready to release all five at the same time in exchange for Bergdahl.

This willingness to negotiate – and to realize the window

of opportunity to seek Bergdahl’s release may be closing as Americans begin to disengage in Afghanistan – might be the strongest dot of any that will connect a path to Bergdahl’s ticket home to Idaho.

Anybody who spouts off about knowing what is going on behind the scenes is likely not in a position to know. Silence is the SOP. These deals employ nuance upon nuance, and they often are as delicate as they are dangerous.

Frustrating as it seems, our military has ruled out military rescue attempts – delicate and dangerous – to date.

The most mystifying aspect of the recent Bergdahl activity is the publicity surfacing from what is usually a very hushed affair: Flag-rank Pentagon press secretaries solemnly saying Bergdahl has “been gone too long”;

Strive for accountability To the Editor: Accountability, according to Black’s Law Dictionary, is “The state of being responsible or answerable.” Lately, we have seen a great disregard for this responsibility in our society, from personal, to professional and to those in government.

Failure to accept accountability for our actions is rampant from those who claim to have had poor and/or abusive

childhood, or those who lived a spoiled life, and workplace disclaimers due to lack of knowledge and/or someone else’s fault. Clergy or others in stressful positions look for excuses why they failed, instead of accepting accountability.

In our state, our longtime representatives and senators continue to sidestep the issues and instead of admitting they failed, they blame politics.

Federally, few employees have been held accountable, fired and/or criminally charged in Fast and Furious, Benghazi, IRS, NAS and countless other situations.

What are we allowing to happen to our society? Even worse, what kind of example do we offer our children who look up to us for a role model?

It is far better to do your best and accept accountability for your actions since we were created as humans with free will.

Hopefully, if we, as a society, strive to be more accountable, we can then enjoy living in a better, more civilized world.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A 15-0 run midway through the second half Wednesday night at Wills Gymnasium lifted Joliet Junior College to one of its biggest victories of the season.

Plainfield Central graduate Justin Scanlan and freshman guard Deiondre Cunningham led the charge as the Wolves overcame North Central Community College Conference foe Rock Valley, 74-65.

Scanlan, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, scored on a traditional three-point play to give JJC (19-10, 9-4) a 49-48 lead and ignite the run. Cunningham then made two of his three second-half 3-pointers to help bury the Golden Eagles (24-5, 8-4).

The Wolves, who had lost to Rock Valley, 88-81, earlier in the season, trailed 33-26 at halftime but came out on fire in the second half. They took their first lead, 44-41, when Scanlan completed a three-point play with 11:35 left.

“The last time we played them we had a good lead in both halves and [outside gunner Frank] Cimino killed us,” JJC coach Joe Kuhn said. “Tonight we kept that away from them.

Scanlan and Aresnovic managed to get free around the basket enough to combine for 14 first-half points. However, the Wolves had difficulty containing Mayes, a 6-4 freshman forward who had 12 points at the break on 5-of-7 shooting. He finished 10-of-14 from the field.

The Golden Eagles took a 5-2 lead on LT Davis’ 3-pointer and led the rest of the half.

Their largest lead was 31-19 before JJC finished the half on a 7-2 run. That momentum carried into the second half, when Rock Valley managed only 15 points in nearly 15 minutes as the Wolves pulled away.

“They’re one of the highest scoring teams in the country,” Kuhn noted. “We did a very good job defensively.”

Triton, which leads the N4C, has lost three conference games, with JJC and Rock Valley a game behind with one game left.

Plainfield Central’s Winder flies high at meet STAFF REPORTS Plainfield Central pole vaulter Luke Winder just seems to go higher and higher in every meet.

Winder traveled to the USATF Wisconsin Indoor Championships at Carthage College in Kenosha on Sunday looking to improve on the 16-8 performance that he cleared in January at the Reno Pole Vault Summit in Nevada.

He competed in the Open competition of the meet on Sunday. He left Carthage with a new personal best of

17-0 ¾. It was 2¾ inches better than his 16-10 clearance that he achieved last March at the Lockport Indoor Invitational.

After clearing 15-6, 16-1 and 17-0 ¾ all on his first attempt, the bar was then raised to 172½. He missed on all three attempts.

Winder now has the top two of the top three vaults ever indoors by an Illinois athlete.

With his performance Sunday, he moves into third place all time indoors or outdoors.

He only trails Logan Pflibsen, who cleared 17-2 in 2010 and

Phil Hanson, who cleared 171½ in 2006.

“I am very excited about the seven guys that qualified for state this weekend,” Glynn said. “There are four returning placers that are looking to build upon their finishes from last year. We have some pretty high goals that the guys are trying to achieve. They have put in the work necessary to reach those goals this weekend.

“I’m also looking forward to watch my three seniors finish on a high note. Javier Montalvo, Matt Ryan and Kyle Rodriguez have been a staple of the Warrior wrestling program for

years and have built it from the ground up. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys. They’ve done everything I have asked them to do over the last three months.”

Morris has a two-time placewinner in 2A, Kenny Baldridge, who hopes to improve upon his sixth- and fourth-place efforts the last two seasons.

The lone three-time placer from a local school, Plainfield Central’s Nick Nasenbeny, joins four other returning medal winners in the Class 3A meet.

The goal of nearly all of the competitors at this weekend’s IHSA wrestling finals is to finish somewhere on the awards podium Saturday night.

However, less than 40 percent of the 672 individuals in three classes will be able to claim all-state honors following a top-six finish.

Wrestlers from programs in the Joliet-area take up 61 of those spots and many have realistic hopes of advancing to the final day of competition.

But just under a quarter of that group has earned a state medal in their previous trips and only five individuals have advanced to the title mat.

Lincoln-Way West has the largest group of returning placewinners, with four athletes trying to pick up medals for the second year in a row.

Kyle Rodriguez took fourth last year, Javier Montalvo and Kyle Ruettiger finished fifth and Noah Keefe placed sixth in the Class 2A tournament.

They’ll be joined by three teammates at this year’s event, which begins today at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

“Our three seniors, Ian [Meagher], Joey [Nelson] and Bryce are program-type kids,” DePolo said. “They’re very loyal and have put in a lot of time and effort for me. Over the last few years they have been the backbone of the team. Our hope is that they come into this weekend like any other weekend and just wrestle physical and smart and take the opportunities that are going to be there.”

Minooka’s Carson Oughton, who finished sixth last season this season, is the other returning placewinner from area teams in the 3A tournament.

Although none of them have placed yet, Lockport’s Tyler Johnson, who’s unbeaten, as well as Vince Dietz, Dan Radcliffe and Shayne Oster, are highly-ranked at their weights.

Another 3A area competitor who hasn’t won a medal but figures to be in the mix among the wrestlers is Lincoln-Way East’s Nick Allegretti.

While Peotone leads all local squads with eight qualifiers, the Class 1A program, which could have the most placewinners is Coal City.

The Coalers have five qualifiers, but three of those claimed second place a year ago and two of them have collected a pair of state medals.

Cody Minnick and Casey Brown are the two-time medalists while Corey Jurzak picked up his initial medal last year.

Seneca’s Sage Friese also finished second a year ago while the other Class 1A returning medalist is Dwight’s Anthony Bauer, who took fifth.

Lead was as much as 10 points early in fourth quarter

By MARK JOHNSON mjohnson@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There was yet another delay, but Coal City and Providence finally played girls basketball for the first time during the 201314 season Tuesday night.

A regular-season game between the two teams was postponed once and canceled on the second attempt due to inclement weather. They did play their scheduled semifinal game Tuesday at the 3A Morris Regional, but only after a delay of about a halfhour.

The first semifinal between Joliet Catholic and

Lincoln-Way West started late because the teams hit snarled traffic en route.

The wait was worth it for Providence, which prevailed 66-60 and will meet top-seeded Joliet Catholic Academy at 7 p.m. Thursday for the regional championship. The loss ended a 26-2 season for Coal City.

Providence made all seven of the free throws it attempted during the third quarter as it stretched a three-point halftime lead to 47-39.

Of the 16 fouls the referees called during the quarter, one was a charging call on Coal City forward Britta Spelde, which was her fifth foul.

Spelde had just re-entered the game with Providence in the midst of an 8-1 run late in the third.

Game-long foul trouble limited Spelde, who came in averaging more than 11

points, to two.

The Providence lead got as large as 10 points early in the fourth quarter, but the Coalers chipped away from there.

Coal City’s Emily Halliday scored 11 of her 33 points during the quarter.

The Celtics went ahead 9-2 early, with Madeline Culligan hitting a pair of baskets and Marybeth Gallick a 3-pointer, but Coal City scored the final seven points of the first quarter.

Emily Halliday had five of those points, and she then connected three times from 3-point land during a 13-8 run on which the Coalers began the second quarter.

Providence closed the half on a 12-4 run, which Maeve Garvey started with a three-pointer and Taylor Juricek ended with a conventional three-point play, to lead 29-26.

While the Czechs had to play for a second straight day because they needed to beat Slovakia in the qualification round just to reach the quarterfinals, the rested Americans were ready to roll after two days off.

The U.S. seemed to take advantage of having fresh legs, beating the Czech Republic to loose pucks all night long.

“They had more energy,” Czech goalie Ondrej Pavelec said. “It’s not an excuse, it’s just the way it is.”

SOCHI, Russia – The United States’ hockey team is getting exactly what it wanted. Another shot at Canada.

Dustin Brown banged in a go-ahead goal late in the first period and the Americans went on to dominate the Czech Republic 5-2 Wednesday to earn a spot in the semifinals for the third time in four Olympics.

The U.S. went on to play in the gold-medal game in 2010 and 2002 and lost each time to the Canadians.

When the Americans’ coach, Dan Bylsma, was asked to look ahead to the matchup, he took a deep breath and paused for several seconds to gather his thoughts.

“We knew we were going to

have some big games prior to this point in time, but you were looking forward to the possibility of this rematch,” he said.

After a day off, the countries that share a long border in North America and generally friendly relations will meet on Friday for the chance to become hockey champions of the Sochi Games.

“It’s a great opportunity,” American forward Max Pacioretty said. “They’re obviously the favorite coming into the tournament, and we’ve opened

Minooka Bible Church members minister in Haiti, find faith

Samson, a friendly Haitian boy with a big smile who hung around the building sites, showed up one day with a huge laceration on the ball of his foot. So the construction team from Minooka Bible Church cleaned it up and sent for Dr. Rita Hart.

Hart, a Morris Hospital pediatrician working in the Minooka Healthcare Center in Channahon, was able to disinfect and suture the wound and then inject Samson with antibiotics all thanks to generous donations from individuals back home.

Several days later, the foot was pink and healing nicely, Hart said. Another little boy did not fare as well.

He had come to see Hart with a badly infected knee joint, swollen, red and hot. A missionary associated with the House of Hope in Haiti, where the Minooka Bible Church team stayed from Jan. 2-9, asked Hart how she would ordinarily treat it.

Hart said, “I would call the hospital and admit him, start IV antibiotics, order a CT scan and consult with an orthopedic surgeon.” Hart said the missionary replied, “Well, you can’t do that here. What else have you got?”

I felt horrible and wished I could do more. But the missionary said, ‘That’s more than he had yesterday and more than if you had not been here.’ ” This was Minooka Bible Church’s second mission trip to Haiti, said Dave Jankowski, the church’s former senior pastor and current associate pastor, who began the adult mission program three years ago when he semi-retired.

positive, Jankowski wished he could have offered a second trip, but until recently, the church didn’t have staff available to do it.

In 2012, through Don Shire ministries, Minooka Bible Church took its first trip to Haiti. Those 15 team members

stayed at Haiti Faith in Action Orphanage and renovated its bathrooms and showers. They also built a church for the orphanage’s director, Pastor Lineus Cenor, as the 2010 earthquake had destroyed his.

In 2013, Minooka Bible Church hosted two mission

trips. One was to the Bahamas to assist in constructing a Christian youth center. The second was to Nicaragua to drill a well through Living Water International. In November, again through Living Water International, church members will travel to Guatemala to drill a well.

For many adults, Jankowski said, these trips are the first time they’ve left the country.

They return with knowledge in two areas.

“They have an understanding of how badly the gospel is needed in other parts of the world,” Jankowski said, “and they recognize that a person can be happy without all the stuff that Americans have.”

The original intent for this Haiti trip, Jankowski said, was to construct two cement block homes, one in the desert and one in the mountains, for two widows displaced by 2010 earthquake.

When Hart and two nurses signed up, although Hart had fully planned to “swing a hammer and slap some paint on,” organizers added the medical component. With three

suitcases of donated medical supplies and personal care products, Hart treated the 500 adults and children that came to her via “word of mouth” for checkups.

Zach Vogt of Shorewood, a participant in both the Bahamas and Nicaragua mission trips and a mason with the family business of Piazza Masonry in Lockport, was the building foreman for the mountain house.

Construction in Haiti is more than lack of building codes and commercial inspectors, Vogt said. It meant working through interpreters and mixing up rocky concrete. It also included village children singing Christian songs at the site and watching Joseph, a young man who lived in a tent city at the former site of the Italian embassy, gift those children with free trinkets out of his duffle bag. Those “little bracelets and knickknacks” are his income, he said. Vogt and Joseph are now Facebook friends.

“He’s only on wifi once a month,” Vogt said, “but when he gets to a wifi zone, I’m able to stay in touch with him.”

Most meaningful to Vogt was sitting on House of Hope’s flat roof at night, when temperatures dropped from the 90s to the 70s, and reflecting on the day’s blessings. Allison Selk of Minooka, who assisted the prayer team, sifted rock on the construction team and helped with “crowd control” on the medical team, agreed.

“We had people crying, tough, grown men spilling their innermost thoughts, mothers getting choked up seeing the harsh conditions of everything and thinking how wonderful their kids have it and wanting to take those malnourished naked babies home and give them love, food and shelter,” Selk said. “People struggling in their faith rose up and said that there is no longer a doubt and friends comforted one another like brothers and sisters. It’s so incredible.”

Pope opens big week with sex and divorce on agenda

By NICOLE WINFIELD The Associated Press VATICAN CITY – Meetings this week between Pope Francis and his cardinals will deal with some of the thorniest issues facing the church, including the rejection by most Catholics of some of its core teaching on premarital sex, contraception, gays and divorce.

German Cardinal Walter Kasper, who has called for “changes and openings” in the church’s treatment of divorced and remarried Catholics, will give the keynote speech Thursday to the pope and cardinals attending a preparatory meeting for an October summit on family issues. The cardinals are in town for Saturday’s ceremony to formally install 19 new “princes of the church,” the first batch named by Francis to join the group of churchmen who will elect his successor.

Saturday’s ceremony is the high point of an intensive week of meetings presided over by Francis that include the first proposals to put the Vatican’s financial house in order.

Ahead of Saturday’s consistory, cardinals will meet for two days behind closed doors to begin preparations for the October summit on family issues.

Francis scheduled the summit last year and took the unusual step of sending bishops around the world a questionnaire for ordinary Catholics

to fill out about how they understand and practice church teaching on marriage, sex and other issues related to the family.

The results, at least those reported by bishops in Europe and the United States, have been eye-opening. Bishops themselves reported that the church’s core teachings on sexual morals, birth control, homosexuality, marriage and divorce are rejected as unrealistic and outdated by the vast majority of Catholics, who nevertheless said they were active in parish life and considered their faith vitally important.

“On the matter of artificial contraception the responses might be characterized by the saying, ‘That train left the station long ago,’ ” Bishop Robert Lynch of St. Petersburg, Florida, recently wrote on his blog, summarizing his survey’s findings. “Catholics have made up their minds and the sensus fidelium [sense of the faithful] suggests the rejection of church teaching on this subject.”

German and Swiss bishops released similar survey results earlier this month. German bishops reported this: “The church’s statements on premarital sexual relations, on homosexuality, on those divorced and remarried and on birth control ... are virtually never accepted, or are expressly rejected in the vast majority of cases.”

At the bridge table, the beauty of a deal can increase upon careful analysis. Sometimes, though, the key play is a falsecard.

What should happen in this deal after West leads the heart ace against three no-trump?

Before getting to the answer, some pairs use interesting honor leads against no-trump. They choose one card, either the ace or king (I prefer the king), when they have a very strong suit. It asks partner either to unblock an honor or to give count. With that agreement, West would lead his “big” card here, happy if East could throw the queen onto the table. (Assuming the king is “big,” then an ace-lead is from a weaker ace-king holding, asking partner to signal attitude. And a queen-lead is from either a weak king-queen or a good queen-jack.)

If that appeals to you, discuss it carefully with your partners.

Using standard leads and signals, East should play his heart three at trick one, discouraging. Then South must drop his seven. He has to try to persuade West that East started with Q-3-2 of hearts and was doing the best he could by playing the three. Agreed, it should not work. Irritable bowel syndrome may have many causes Dear Doctor K: I have irritable bowel syndrome. Can you explain what has caused it?

Dear Reader: The honest answer is we don’t know what causes irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Over the past 20 years, we’ve discovered some clues and developed some new treatments.

IBS is a common condition.

Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, bloating, gassiness and cramping. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve posted criteria that doctors look for when diagnosing IBS.) No physical abnormality has been yet identified in people with IBS. For example, the walls of the large and small intestine appear normal. However, researchers have reported some abnormalities in how the intestines function.

Normally, the intestines move digested food progressively downward to the rectum, where a bowel movement removes it from the body. For that to happen, the walls of the intestine must squeeze down in a coordinated way. In many (but not all) patients with IBS, the movement of the intestinal walls is not well-coordinated.

Whether these abnormalities in how the intestines work explain the symptoms of IBS, however, remains uncertain. In fact, it’s likely that IBS is not a single disease, but

Some possible causes of IBS symptoms include: • Infection. A bout of infectious gastroenteritis (stomach or bowel inflammation) may sensitize the gut in a way that leads to IBS symptoms.

• Overgrowth of intestinal bacteria in the small intestine.

This may contribute to common symptoms in some patients, and antibiotic treatment may improve some symptoms.

• Unusual bacteria in the large intestine. In all of us, the large intestine is filled with trillions of bacteria, of thousands of different types. Some experts speculate that IBS may be influenced by the types of bacteria in the large intestine.

• Colon activity. Some research has found that muscle in the wall of the large intestine (colon) can become more sensitive than usual; it goes into spasm after only mild stimulation.

• Heightened sensitivity.

Another possibility is that people with IBS have a much lower threshold for pain than people without IBS.

• Hormones produced in the GI tract, which affect movement of the bowels, may also trigger symptoms. Women with IBS often have more symptoms during their menstrual periods. This suggests that levels of reproductive hormones also affect IBS symptoms.

• Dietary factors. Certain foods can trigger IBS symptoms.

Common culprits include cabbage, broccoli, legumes and other gas-producing foods, caffeine, alcohol, dairy products, fatty foods, raw fruits, and foods, gums and beverages containing sorbitol, an artificial sweetener. These foods contain substances called FODMAPs. It’s a matter of trial and error to determine which foods trigger your symptoms. Eliminate one food at a time to see which ones give you trouble.

• Stress and emotion. Stress stimulates colon spasms in people with IBS. Stress reduction, relaxation training and counseling can help relieve symptoms in some people.

I’ll bet that, like many illnesses, IBS has multiple physical causes and can be made worse by stress.

Dr. Wallace: Over the Christmas break, my family and I went to London to visit my grandparents. My mother was born in England, and my parents met when they both were students at Surrey University.

While we were in England, we went to Blackpool, a resort city on the ocean in the west of England. We decided to have our fortunes told by a gypsy fortuneteller.

Neither of us believed that she actually could predict the future, but we did it just for fun.

Dear Abby: I’m a single mom in a serious relationship with a divorced man who has children of his own. Between us, we have seven, ranging in age from 7 to 17. I’m in my early 30s; he’s in his early 50s.

My dilemma is that I’m interested in having another child if we get married. He definitely isn’t.

Is it unreasonable for me to want to add to this already large potential blended family? I love the idea of experiencing motherhood again with a little more experience and age under my belt, and I’d love to share that intimacy with him. In his newest book, “A Permanent Member of the Family,” Banks gives us 12 beautiful stories, told with compassion and sadness, and – sometimes – with wry inevitability.

Connie, in “Former Marine,” likes being a father to his three sons and he has done everything he could to give them what they needed including their educations, down payments on their houses, even a Hawaiian honeymoon. He mortgaged his trailer and land, which became a problem when he lost his job. At 70, he barely scrapes by and his sons, whose work and lives have distanced them from Connie, don’t seem to notice the extent of his struggles.

Connie, once a Marine, has seen his sons all take careers in law enforcement. Like him, they live by a code that ultimately sets them apart from their father. Though there’s an inevitability to the arc of this story, there is more importantly a quiet, earnest grace reminiscent of “The Sweet Hereafter.”

A literature professor at a small liberal arts college in New Hampshire separates from his wife of 14 years in the title story, “A Permanent Member of the Family,” but vows to split the custody of their three girls precisely in half. In

With the death of the dog comes the unraveling of the family unit.

Those of us reading this may feel a need to repress a smile at the oddly amusing way he reveals his plight.

Sheila cheats on Harold, a hard-working excavator, and then leaves him to marry the contractor who’d been her lover.

She gets both the beautiful house of her dreams and an adopted baby in

the exchange. There is no biblical reckoning for Sheila. She sees something better suited for her; she takes it; and she prospers.

Harold, though still in love with Sheila, tries his best to move on and not harbor resentments. They both continue to live in Keene, in northern New York, a

village of 1,000 year-round residents. It’s a given that they will run into each other. “The Christmas Party” shows us that no long and intimate relationship is easily untangled. Harold, despite his fervent wish for decorum, has greater needs. Sheila’s new house, we are told, is a repudiation of the past; a retelling of her story, which is now about finding true love.

That’s a lot for Harold to bear.

Most of these stories gently wrench the people involved away from regular lives and families and drop them in a place where they must refocus, bear up and work even harder than they have, most often more alone than before. “Blue” is more horrific and more harshly fated. Despite its slow and easy way of unfolding, we are keyed for trouble (and we are miserable waiting for it) when a group of car salesmen and women decide on a strategy for taking advantage of an African-American woman shopping, at long last, for a car she has saved long and hard for. Ventana goes about the transaction as she has gone about her life, cautiously and systematically.

But she has a weakness we all recognize.

She makes an attempt at befriending something not necessarily trustworthy.

She sees something in Blue that simply isn’t there.

There isn’t a story in this book that won’t instantly hook you, not with an adrenaline rush, a clever plot twist or high drama, but by an insistent tug at the heart and at our false sense of fairness as we watch, helplessly, at the insistence of the unravelings.
