Alexander Lumber Company Lumber, together with grain and meatpacking, was one of the three most important commodities of 19th century Chicago. During the second half of the 19th century, Chicago became the world’s largest lumber market.

The commercial lumber business began as early as 1833, as shipments of lumber began to be shipped across Lake Michigan to help supply the local marking with building materials.

Over the next several decades, geography, the proximity to the northern forests and the needs of the growing local population made Chicago the perfect location for moving forest products around the region.

To tap into the need for local lumber, many new companies began operations in small towns around the Midwest.

One such company, the Alexander Lumber Company, can trace its beginnings to the 1890s when John Alexander and his partners, Tom Brittingham and Joe Hixon, incorporated their new business.

With a $5,000 loan from the Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago, the firm began operations in Aurora, Illinois. Over the next several decades, John and his partners expanded lumber operations along the railroad lines that extended out of Chicago.

expanding railroad right-ofway areas and set up over one hundred “line yards” by the late 1920s.

In Manhattan, the opening of the Wabash Railroad in 1880 led to the establishment of the village.

Soon a business district developed rapidly around the new railroad depot, including a boarding house, hotel, a blacksmith shop, and lumber businesses.

One of the early lumber companies was the Eberhart Lumber Company, whose beginnings can be traced to Frederick Eberhart, who owned property near Wabash and State Streets as early as March 1889. In December 1913, Henry Eberhart took over ownership of the land and continued to operate the family lumber business for several years.

As their lumber business began to grow, the business expanded its operations and relocated. Growth allowed Alexander Lumber to purchase the property and buildings at Wabash and State Streets from Henry Eberhart in December 1923.

For nearly 100 years, Alexander Lumber Company provided employment for many local and area residents and had been an important business for area contractors. The old Alexander Lumber property was sold to the Township of Manhattan in January 2013, and today the township offices operate from this location.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND and LAUREN LEONE–CROSS The Herald-News JOLIET – Residents in some areas of Will and Grundy counties likely are busy digging themselves out from at least a foot of snow – leftovers from Sunday’s brutal winter storm and the region’s first of 2015.

More than 12 inches of snow fell in parts of Will and Grundy counties as of Sunday evening. A blizzard warning kicked in midday, with accumulation totals predicted to edge closer to 16 inches in some areas by day’s end, with isolated higher amounts possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm – nicknamed Linus by the weather service – buried much of the region, creating hazardous roadways and foiling Super Bowl party plans for some. Even after the snow tapered off, many were left dealing with strong gusty winds, snowdrifts and downed power lines.

State, county and city law enforcement reported more than 50 crashes from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Most were spin-outs and cars sliding into ditches, while one of the more significant weather-related crashes happened along eastbound Interstate 80 near I-355.

All lanes were blocked for at least an hour following a crash involving a semi-trailer and a sport utility vehicle, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Wilfredo Rivera said.

The individuals involved were transported to Silver Cross Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

“Anytime you get the first big blast of the year, it takes people by surprise,” Rivera said. “Fortunately, this happened on Sunday and not a workday.”

Joliet police Chief Brian Benton on Sunday urged commuters to take their time driving to work Monday morning and to stay home if going out isn’t necessary. Throughout

Sunday, law enforcement were “very busy” responding to calls of downed power lines as wind gusts reached up to 40 mph, he said.

Downed lines, power outages

The snow caused power outages throughout Will and Grundy counties, with the power outage map from ComEd showing pockets of outages throughout the area, affecting thousands of local residents. Louis Joliet Mall also was without power for

several hours, and closed at 3 p.m.

ComEd spokeswoman Kim Johnson said that some of the 14,000 customers who still were without power as of 5 p.m. Sunday were located in the Joliet area. Forecasted gusty winds would likely make restoration “a challenge” throughout Sunday evening.

“As you can imagine, the roads are difficult to navigate,” Johnson said. “That makes it challenging for our crews. We’re working as

quickly and safely as possible.”

By Monday morning, downed power lines are “quite possible,” Johnson said, because of the forecasted high winds overnight.

People are urged to call’s ComEd main line at 800-Edison1 rather than attempting to move downed lines themselves.

JOLIET – Punxsutawney Phil and other select groundhogs will seek their shadows Monday, but not everyone wants the critter to put an end to winter.

Legend has it that Punxsutawney Phil, and other similarly skilled kin of the species, will forecast another six weeks of winter-like weather on this day – Groundhog Day – if he sees his shadow and crawls back into his hole.

“I sure hope so,” said Jus-

tin Duckworth of Joliet when asked last week if he’d like the groundhog to see his shadow or not. “I hope we get dumped on.”

Dumped on with snow, that is. For Duckworth is a winter sports enthusiast. He’s a snowboarder. And, until this weekend, it has not been the best of winters when it comes to snow. Duckworth looked back longingly on last winter when nearly 5½ feet of snow fell in December through February, according to the National Weather Service.

“I love the snow,” he said,

thinking back to January 2014 with one regret. “Those two weeks when you couldn’t go out in the snow because it was too cold were heartbreaking.”

Unlike this winter, most of the snow that fell on the ground stayed there. There was almost no chance of snow melting last winter when it was so cold that temperatures reached the 0 degrees mark on 25 days from December through February. The temperature reached 0 degrees on

Tax prep offered to qualifying families

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – Families with qualifying incomes can receive help preparing taxes this year through the Will County Low Income Tax Assistance Coalition.

The federal and state income tax preparation service is available to families and individuals earning up to $53,000 in 2014, which is considered low-to-moderate income in Will County, said Andrew VanSingel, chair of Will County LITAC and director of the Low-Income Tax Clinic at Prairie State Legal Services.

Families who don’t categorize themselves as low-income assume they can’t use these services, he said, but that’s not necessarily the case.

“We’re trying to make [it] as inclusive as possible,” he said.

have their income tax returns filed electronically at no cost, VanSingel said. The program – offered through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in partnership with the IRS – is a free alternative to a paid preparer, VanSingel said.

A good majority of taxpayers use a paid preparer, he said, and can pay anywhere from $100 to $900 for the services, he said.

“This is a great resource for people,” VanSingel said, noting the program is in its fourth filing season. The program started out small, having filed 75 returns. Last year, it filed about 475 returns, he said.

People who failed to sign up for health care coverage last year through the Affordable Care Act also will receive help in determining whether they face penalties for being uninsured or will be exempt, he said.

The penalty is $95, or 1 percent of income above a certain income threshold, but there are some exemptions, and that penalty is prorated depending on how many months a family or individual goes uninsured, he said.

“When we have those situations come up, our role is to educate them so it doesn’t happen next year,” VanSingel said.

People need to bring with them a number of items, including proof of identification, Social Security cards, wage and earning statements, and a copy of their most recent property tax bill.

Help find Kallie If you haven’t seen the ads, signs and posters about the Sheltie named Kallie who went missing from the Shorewood area, please take note and help bring her home.

I’ve been watching the information appear since she went missing in September, and was amazed at how hard this family is working to find Kallie; they aren’t planning to give up looking for her.

The back story is that Kallie’s owners were transferred to Australia last summer. In order to get their two Shelties into the country they had to be quarantined for four months and have weekly veterinarian visits.

The dogs were staying with Bonnie Badurski, mother of owner Kiersten Fritz-Girten, who lives in Kipling Estates in Shorewood. With just two weeks left before they could be reunited with Kiersten, Bonnie was walking Kallie in the neighborhood and a large black dog charged at them.

Kallie pulled back and right out of her collar; that was the last time she’s been seen by the family.

Kiersten, her husband and daughter have had to remain in Australia, so the Illinois Sheltie Rescue has taken over the search for them, director Natalie Whalen said.

Kiersten has purchased trail cameras and two live traps, which the Sheltie rescue is using whenever they get a tip.

Mailings have gone out to every veterinarian, police department, dog groomer and shelter in the area. Police have Kallie on their radar as do local road crews.

The rescue has 40 to 50 local volunteers looking for Kallie and checking out tips.

Kallie is micro-chipped, Natalie said, so if she does turn up somewhere she can be identified.

The rescue has received many tips on sightings and they check everyone of them out. It’s a touchy situation and the volunteers respect that, said Natalie. But they knock

The public can help by reporting sightings to the rescue.

Shelties are known for becoming feral very quickly once in the wild, and Kallie will run in fear if she’s approached.

People in the area who have barns or other structures on their property are asked to watch for signs of an animal living inside. Kallie will be trying to find someplace to stay warm. If you do suspect something is living on your property, volunteers will come out and set up the trail camera, which catches any movements, before they set a live trap.

A big fear is that Kallie is being kept by someone who found her. So the rescue is asking if you notice a neighbor who recently acquired a Sheltie to call them and they will handle it. If someone has found her and hasn’t seen the information, please call Natalie at 309-824-0107. There still is a $1,000 reward for information leading to her return.

Kallie is now 18 months old, looks like a small Collie and was 17 pounds when she went missing.

WILMINGTON – A construction worker died Friday after he was pinned between a beam and a lift.

Patrick C. Wilda, 33, of Plainfield was discovered about noon in the lift he’d been working in at a site in the 24500 block of Lorenzo Road in Wilmington, according to Police Chief Phillip Arnold.

Arnold said the lift had been extended to the roof beam. Other workers performed CPR until Wilmington firefighters arrived.

Wilda was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m.

An autopsy was performed Saturday at the Will County Coroner’s Office. Cause of death will be determined pending police investigation and further investigation of the worksite mishap, according to the coroner’s office.

Wilda was employed by Area Erectors Inc. Arnold said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.

The Wilmington Police Department and the Illinois State Police are also investigating the incident, the coroner’s office said.

Joliet woman never turned down opportunities to help

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jerry Lakota of Joliet recalled the ready answer he and his brother Lou Lakota of Shorewood had for the police when they – as teens – were stopped for walking near Broadway Street at 2 a.m.

“We’re going to church,” Jerry said. “Our mother told us we had to go.”

It was Holy Week and members at their church, St. Mary Nativity in Joliet, took turns keeping a round-the-clock watch until Easter Sunday.

Skipping church was never an option on Sundays and holy days for their mother, Helen Lakota.

But Helen Lakota also was loyal to SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Joliet, as Helen graduated from the eighth grade at its former parish school. Every year in

early December, Helen insisted the entire family attend the church’s traditional Christmas vigil dinner, said Karen McDermott of Joliet, Helen’s daughter.

“Even though we grumbled about the way they made the [dried mushroom] soup,” Karen Helen said. “It wasn’t the way our Lakota family made the soup.”

Take Helen’s devotion to church and family, along with her knack for making friends with everyone and a policy of never refusing to help, and it’s easy to see the trail of loving humble service Helen left behind.

Because it really didn’t matter if Helen was singing in St. Mary Nativity’s choir or

serving as female deputy for the Will County Sheriff’s Department in the 1960s, which she did when her brother Joseph Trizna was sheriff, Lou said, and occasionally needed a female officer for strip searches.

Helen had grown up helping her mother with laundry and canning, Jerry said. Her work experience before she married Louis (deceased) was cleaning homes for customers, Lou said. After her marriage, she moved into Louis’ childhood home and cared for her father-in-law for 18 years before his death, Karen added.

A member of St. Mary Nativity since her early teens, Helen met her husband in the church choir, where he continued to sing until his death and where Helen continued to sing until 10 years ago, when she could no longer climb the stairs.

But Helen never stopped singing, Jerry said. She just moved her singing to the pews.

Through the years, Helen was also an active member of the St. Mary Nativity’s Altar and Rosary Society, Medical Mission and the Joanites. Helen also was the first president of the school’s Mother’s Club, at the pastor’s request.

Helen cooked at Joliet Central High School and then ran the cafeteria at the Will County Jail, again when Joseph was sheriff, Karen said. For 35 years, Helen assisted Louis at his Lakota Jewelers in Joliet, although she was never an official employee.

As Helen grew older, being on the receiving end was hard for her, especially once she was no longer able to drive, but she always said, “Thank you,” Lou said. Even in the last days before her Dec. 16 death at the age of 97, Jerry

added, Helen was apologizing for needing help.

The hardest part now, Jerry said, is cleaning out the Lakota homestead, for Helen was also very frugal and wasted nothing. But that wasn’t the reason why Helen never wanted to leave her home.

Once, when Jerry had suggested downsizing, Helen had objected saying, “Do you want me to leave your father?”

Helen was so devoted to Louis that she even slept with his picture on her pillow, Karen added.

“My dad used to say, ‘Why are you keeping that? Do you think you’ll live to be a hundred?’ ” Lou said. “Well, she almost made it.”

Kick, her husband and one of their daughters moved to Lemont in December from Orland Park.

Chamber Executive Director Glenn Pasiewicz said he is honored the foundation is going to become part of Lemont and is proud of what it is trying to accomplish.

“She’s trying to turn a tragic story into a good thing,” he said.

Kick said she hopes to be able to expand the foundation through fundraising, but first she wants to meet people in Lemont who would like to share what they do.

“We’d love to be able to connect with any of the music lesson providers – that we might be able to bring some students into their facilities,” she said.

LEMONT – Since it was founded in February 2014, the mission of the Sean P. Murphy Foundation has been to help pay for children’s music lessons for families who cannot afford them.

Now the family behind the foundation has moved to Lemont and wants to spread its work to its new home community.

Foundation President Karen Kick said the organization was formed in honor of her son, Sean Murphy, a musician who died in 2012 at age 23.

Murphy began guitar lessons when he was 11. By the time he died, he was able to play 40 instruments, including the sitar, mandolin, banjo and drums.

“I think with his aptitude, at a certain point and time, he was able to self-teach instruments,” she said.

Kick said Murphy played

with some bands, but he had more passion for behindthe-scenes work. He opened a recording studio in his hometown of Orland Park and named it Giant Robot Studios. He also worked at music stores, did some recording session jobs and gave lessons.

Kick said her family wanted to honor both Sean’s passion for music and kindness.

“We thought the perfect blend would be to have a charity revolved around music,” she said.

She said learning to play musical instruments is a good outlet to help children build confidence, but can be a luxury families cannot afford.

“Especially with the economy and people having tough times, a lot of times the extras go first,” she said.

She was 85.

Giants co-owner John Mara announced his mother’s death on Super Bowl Sunday.

Ann Mara slipped in front of her home in Rye, New York, during an ice storm two weeks ago and was hospitalized with a head injury the following day. While there were initial hopes for recovery, John Mara said, complica-

She used to like to remind John Mara that “you’re an employee.’”

SARAH GRACE WIELGOS Sarah Grace Wielgos, age 21, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 30, 2015, surrounded by family and friends, after a long and brave battle with a rare leukemia.

A nursing major at her beloved Saint Louis University (SLU), Sarah inspired many by her rock-solid faith in God, as well as her courage and strength in facing every aspect of the cancer. Sarah’s youth was marked by a dedication to serving others. She went on numerous mission trips with Friendship Baptist Church, Plainfield and volunteered for two years at Bolingbrook Christian Health Center.

She also worked as a nanny and at Milestone Pediatrics, Naperville. She chose to study medicine because she wished to bring healing in body and spirit to others.

After her first stem cell transplant and period of remission, Sarah returned to her nursing studies at SLU and worked tirelessly to educate people about the Be the Match bone marrow donor registry and to raise

Overturned tanker forces closure of central Illinois freeway

CHAMPAIGN – A stretch of Interstate 57 in central Illinois near Champaign is closed after a tanker truck carrying a chemical used in making shampoo overturned.

Illinois State Police say the accident happened about 7 a.m. on Sunday just west of Champaign.

No injuries were reported.

Police say the truck was northbound and changing lanes when the driver lost control.

That’s when investigators say the tanker detached from the tractor and overturned onto its side in the center median.

Police say traffic in both directions of the freeway would be detoured until the wreckage is removed and the chemical is unloaded from the tanker.

Police say the 33-year-old driver from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Judge: Quincy man accused in beating death mentally fit

QUINCY – A western Illinois judge has concluded that a Quincy man charged with first-degree murder is mentally fit.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported that Adams County Circuit Judge William Mays ruled that 51-year-old David Masterson will be able to go to trial if a preliminary hearing Tuesday determines there’s probable cause to believe Masterson committed the crime.

Mays says he made the ruling after reviewing a Quincy psychologist’s findings about his evaluation of Masterson.

Masterson’s public defenders have not returned telephone messages seeking comment.

Man accused of causing wreck during freeway confrontation

URBANA – A Rantoul man is jailed on $150,000 bond after being accused of running a car off of a central Illinois freeway and ramming it.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported 53-year-old Brian McStay of Rantoul was arrested Saturday on an aggravated

battery count.

A prosecutor says McStay was driving a sport utility vehicle Jan. 13 on Interstate 57 near Tolono when he began tailgating a car occupied by three women.

Authorities say one of the women called 911 to report the unfolding encounter, but the SUV hit the car from behind, knocking it into a ditch.

Investigators say McStay then hit the car broadside and drove away before being found parked about a mile away.

There were no serious injuries.

Online court records don’t show whether McStay has an attorney.

Autopsies set for 2 bodies found in Illinois home

MARION – Autopsies are planned on two people whose

bodies were found in a rural home in southwestern Illinois’ Williamson County.

The county’s coroner, Michael Burke, says 42-year-old Daniel Blaise and 43-year-old Amy Blaise were found dead late Friday in a home south of Marion.

Authorities have not released details about what may have caused the deaths.

Autopsies were scheduled for Sunday.

Burke’s office is investigating along with the sheriff’s department.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Man gets 40 years for wounding officer during traffic stop

BELLEVILLE – A southwestern Illinois man who shot and wounded a Fairview Heights police officer during a 2012 traffic

stop has been ordered to spend four decades in prison.

Thirty-year-old Dallas McIntosh of Centreville was sentenced Thursday in St. Clair County after pleading guilty to aggravated battery of a police officer, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated fleeing and unlawful delivery of marijuana.

Authorities say McIntosh fired at officer Jeffrey Stratman. The bullet hit Stratman’s flashlight, sending shrapnel into Stratman’s hands and ending his 27-year police career.

Stratman was injured when police returned fire but led officers on a chase that eventually ended near his home.

Authorities say a search of McIntosh’s car uncovered marijuana and more than $12,000 in cash.

WASHINGTON – Troubled by consumer complaints and loopholes in state laws, federal regulators are putting together the first-ever rules on payday loans aimed at helping cashstrapped borrowers avoid falling into a cycle of high-rate debt.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said state laws governing the $46 billion payday lending industry often fall short, and that fuller disclosures of the interest and fees – often an annual percentage rate of 300 percent or more – may be needed.

Full details of the proposed rules, expected early this year, would mark the first time the agency has used the authority it was given under the 2010 DoddFrank law to regulate payday loans. In recent months, it has tried to step up enforcement, including a $10 million settlement with ACE Cash Express after accusing the payday lender of harassing borrowers to collect debts and take out multiple loans.

A payday loan, or a cash advance, is generally $500 or less.

Borrowers provide a personal check dated on their next payday for the full balance or give the lender permission to debit their bank accounts.

Egypt releases imprisoned reporter

CAIRO – A reporter for Al-Jazeera English was released from an Egyptian prison and deported Sunday after more than a year

behind bars, but his two Egyptian colleagues remained jailed in a case widely condemned as a sham by human-rights groups.

Australian Peter Greste was whisked away on a flight to Cyprus. His release came as a welcome surprise to fellow reporters and activists who spent months pressing for his freedom.

But rights groups and Greste’s Qatar-based broadcaster called on Egypt to release the other two defendants in the case, which has hindered the country’s international standing as it struggles to recover from the political unrest and economic collapse caused by the 2011 uprising.

Study: Toddler food often has too much salt, sugar

CHICAGO – Many packaged meals and snacks for toddlers contain worrisome amounts of salt and sugar, potentially creating an early taste for foods that may contribute to obesity and other health risks, according to a new government study.

About seven in 10 toddler dinners studied contained too much salt, and most cereal bars, breakfast pastries and snacks for infants and toddlers contained extra sugars, according to the study by researchers at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They advise parents to read food labels carefully and select healthier choices.

The researchers analyzed package information and labels for more than 1,000 foods marketed for infants and toddlers.

By DENISE LAVOIE The Associated Press BOSTON – The best chance to save the life of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev might be to put his dead brother on trial.

When Tsarnaev’s case begins, his lawyers are likely to pin their hopes – and the bombings themselves – on his older brother, Tamerlan: a Golden Gloves boxer, college student, husband and father who also followed radical Islam and was named by a friend as a participant in a grisly 2011 triple slaying.

“He was the eldest one and he, in many ways, was the role model for his sisters and his brother,” said Elmirza Khozhu-

gov, the former husband of Tamerlan’s sister, Ailina.

“You could always hear his younger brother and sisters say, ‘Tamerlan said this,’ and ‘Tamerlan said that.’ Dzhokhar loved him. He would do whatever Tamerlan would say,” Khozhugov told The Associated Press in the weeks after the bombings.

Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured when two homemade pressure-cooker bombs exploded near the finish line of the iconic race on April 15, 2013.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died days after the bombings following a gun battle with police. Dzhokhar, then 19, was later found hiding in

a boat parked in a backyard.

Jury selection in his federal death penalty trial is entering its second month. With a snow storm in the forecast, proceedings Monday were canceled and jury selection was to resume Tuesday.

Dzhokhar’s lawyers have made it clear they will try to show that he was heavily influenced, maybe even intimidated, by his older brother, into participating in the bombings.

ly slippery. Castro said snow could steadily fall until midnight and then taper off to a possible 1 to 3 inches of additional snow overnight.

Total accumulated snowfall was expected to be about 10 to 16 inches with several more inches of snow predicted for Tuesday night, Castro said. Total accumulation in some areas was slightly greater than originally predicted, Castro added.

“We forecasted severe weather,” Castro said, “and that is what we got.”

Rzab enjoys ice fishing, and he did that last winter as well as this winter, not letting cold weather keep him down.

“It’s what you make of it,” he said. “I like every season.”

“I have a tradition with a friend who lives in Colorado,” Colant said. “We call each other every Groundhog Day.” A favorite topic includes the approach of spring, she said.

“I would love for winter to end,” Colant said. “I’m eager for it to end every year.”

Unfortunately for Colant, the groundhog at the National Weather Service in Romeoville almost always sees his shadow. And, they don’t need a groundhog.

ruary is just not a very likely meteorological event, said meteorologist Kevin Burke. This winter is no different.

Burke said February is likely to be a lot like January this year – starting out colder than normal and warming up a bit but staying winter-like.

“It that does pan out, it looks like we could see high temperatures in the teens.

That could be the case the first week or two of the month,” Burke said. After that, he said temperatures should moderate for the final weeks of winter.

It would be a stretch to imagine this month being anywhere near as wintry as Feb-

ruary 2014, when 19½ inches of snow fell and the temperature reached 0 degrees on seven days.

“Last year was a bit unique in that we had a lot of blocking in the atmosphere,” Burke said. That blocking prevented normal warming trends and brought in cold air from northern Canada and “even Siberia,” Burke said.

Temperatures this winter have been closer to normal, Burke said. Snowfall has not.

“Snowfall has been below average,” he said. “In December, we only had a trace. That’s pretty unusual to just get a trace for the entire month of

December.”

TZ Landscaping in Shorewood spent more time putting up Christmas decorations for customers than plowing snow or salting parking lots in December.

Owner Thomas Zurliene looks to snowplowing to keep income flowing through the winter. “This year has been pretty slow,” he said.

Whatever the groundhogs predict Monday, Roh Alexander of Joliet will adjust.

“I like all the seasons,” Alexander said. “When it’s cold, you snuggle under your blanket, read a good book or watch a good show.”

Sunday was Walleed Baeshan’s first experience with snow and he wasn’t taking any chances with getting stuck in the snow or sliding off the road.

Not only was this Joliet resident and Saudi Arabia native not driving his car, he walked to a local convenience store for a few provisions – canned tuna, tomatoes and lemon. Baeshan had no gripes with walking in snow halfway up to his knees.

“I like it,” Baeshan said of the snow.

For Chris Brown of Joliet, his Super Bowl plans weren’t derailed by the weather.

“I don’t watch the Super Bowl if the Bears aren’t in it,” Brown said.

He didn’t bother getting his car out Sunday, preferring to walk the mile to a local gas station to buy some cigarettes.

Jo Ann Pilar, a cashier at the Marathon gas station at Glenwood and Republic avenues in Joliet, said the roads weren’t too bad at 6:30 a.m.

Sunday when she drove the two blocks to work. Customer traffic was light, until about 10:30 a.m., when people started coming in to gas up.

After work Sunday, Pilar’s first stop would be her mother’s house a few blocks away, she said.

“I heard she didn’t have power,” Pilar said. “I want to be sure she is OK.” Rodney Tordai of Morris couldn’t understand all the concern about the weather Sunday. When driving to Minooka about mid-morning, Tordai noted that both I-80 and Route 6 were plowed and salted, and traffic was moving as if the day was sunny and clear.

Around town in both Morris and Minooka was a little slick, however, Tordai added. To him, it was just a normal snowy day. He said he believed people who didn’t know how to drive in snow were more hazardous than the snow itself.

“This is the Midwest, not Florida,” Tordai said. “This isn’t the first snow we’ve ever had.”

By Monday morning, main roads should be clear, but secondary roads and neighborhoods likely won’t be, Hylka said, so leave extra time in

His heroics offset those of Chris Matthews, one of Seattle’s least-used players before the postseason. Matthews recovered the onside kick that helped the Seahawks beat Green Bay in overtime for the NFC crown, and had a breakout performance Sunday.

Having never caught a pass in the NFL, Matthews grabbed four for 109 yards and a touchdown. Lynch ran for 102 yards, but didn’t get the ball at the 1 on the decisive play – a decision the Seahawks will rue.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Tom Brady and the Patriots made this Super Bowl all about football, not footballs.

Clutch football, spiced by a sensational fourth-quarter rally and a goal-line, game-saving interception.

The record-setting Brady threw for four touchdowns, including a 3-yarder to Julian Edelman with 2:02 remaining Sunday night as New England rallied from a 10-point deficit to win its fourth Super Bowl in the Brady-Bill Belichick era, 28-24 over Seattle.

But the Patriots (15-4) had to survive a last-ditch drive by the Seahawks (14-5), who got to the 1, helped by a spectacular juggling catch by Jermaine Kearse. Rookie Malcolm Butler stepped in front of Ricardo Lockette and picked off Russell Wilson’s off-target pass to complete one of the wildest Super Bowl finishes.

Brady leaped for joy on the Patriots sideline after Butler’s interception.

“It wasn’t the way we drew it up,” said Brady, who won his third Super Bowl MVP award.

Brady surpassed Joe Montana’s mark of 11 Super Bowl touchdown passes with a 5-yarder to Danny Amendola to bring the Patriots within three points.

Seattle, seeking to become the first repeat NFL champion since New England a decade ago, was outplayed for the first half, yet tied at 14.

The Seahawks scored the only 10 points of the third period, but the NFL-leading defense couldn’t slow the brilliant Brady when it counted most.

It didn’t matter how much air was in the balls, game Brady was unstoppable when the pressure was strongest.

Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers won his second MVP award Saturday night, and J.J. Watt swept away the voters the way he sweeps quarterbacks off their feet to take top defensive honors.

Rodgers, also the 2011 Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award winner, took this one in somewhat surprisingly easy fashion over Watt. The Packers quarterback received 31 votes for the 2014 award from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league. Houston’s Watt, seeking to become the first defensive player to win MVP since 1986, got 13 votes.

Rodgers threw for 38 touchdowns and a league-low five interceptions; he has thrown 512 passes at home without a pick.

He led the Packers to two victories at season’s end despite play-

ing with a severe calf injury.

“It can’t help but sink in when you play for the Packers.

When you live in Green Bay you know about the Lombardi years, Bart Starr and all the guys who made those teams special. You like to be part of something special yourself,” Rodgers said.

Watt, the ultra-energetic and versatile Texans end, is the first unanimous choice for an AP award since Tom Brady won Most Valuable Player in 2007, and the first for top defensive player under the current voting setup.

“I’m always trying to raise the bar,” he said. “The moment you get complacent is the moment you begin your decline.

When you start to feel like you’ve made it, when you feel like you’re doing pretty good, that’s when you start to fall back.”

Gronkowski took the Comeback Player award, but was not on hand because, well, New England has a rather important date with Seattle on Sunday in the Super Bowl.

Murray, who ran away with the rushing title with 1,845 yards – nearly 500 more than any other player – also topped the NFL with 2,261 yards from scrimmage. He scored 13 touchdowns in helping the Cowboys win the NFC East.

That overwhelming performance earned him 26 votes as Murray easily outdistanced Rodgers (15 votes).

Arians took his second Coach of the Year award in three seasons after leading his injury-ravaged Cardinals to an 11-5 record and a wild-card playoff berth. Sons represent late Seau at Hall of Fame announcement

By HOWARD FENDRICH The Associated Press PHOENIX – One by one, the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame stepped onto the stage as their names were called. When the eighth man elected Saturday, the late Junior Seau, was announced, his two sons stood with the group.

“I wish,” 25-year-old Tyler Seau said later, “he was here in person with us.”

A field-covering, hard-hitting linebacker, the charismatic Seau, who committed suicide at age 43 in 2012, was the only first-time eligible candidate in the Hall’s Class of 2015. Also getting in Saturday, a day before the Super Bowl, were modern-day players Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Charles Haley and Will Shields, contributors Bill Polian and Ron Wolf, and senior selection Mick Tingelhoff.

Researchers who studied Junior Seau’s brain said it showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease connected to repeated

head injuries, including concussions.

His death, less than 2½ years after the end of his playing career, resonated among players in the league, raising worry about the physical and emotional toll the sport takes.

Junior Seau played in the NFL for 20 seasons, the first 13 with the San Diego Chargers,

followed by three with Miami and four with New England.

He was Defensive Player of the Year for San Diego in 1992, made six All-Pro teams, and was a member of the league’s All-Decade team of the 1990s.

“He never really needed an award to solidify how good he was. This kind of stuff was more for his family, for his mom, his dad, his brothers.

Just to make them proud, make his family proud,” Tyler Seau said. “For him, he knew what work he put in. So he knew where he was and where he stood amongst these men.

And he’s rightfully in.”

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said this week he “loved” having Seau on his roster.

“I can’t imagine having a Professional Football Hall of Fame without Junior Seau in it,” said Belichick, whose team plays the Seattle Seahawks in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

“I’d say the one word that comes to me when I think about Junior and football is

‘passion.’ ” Bettis was a burly running back nicknamed The Bus who began a 13-season career by earning Rookie of the Year honors for the Rams. He capped it by winning the 2006 Super Bowl with the Steelers in a game played in his hometown of Detroit.

His 13,662 yards rushing rank fifth in history.

“To think a little fat kid who had never played football until high school,” Bettis said, “to think I can ascend to this level, this is something I never thought of, never dreamed of.”

When Brown retired after the 2004 season, he ranked No. 2 in NFL history with 14,934 yards receiving, No. 3 with 1,094 catches, and No. 3 with 100 touchdown catches. This was his sixth year of eligibility.

“You know you have to wait your turn,” the 1987 Heisman Trophy winner said. “I came in this year hoping for better things.”

Area 3A wrestlers prepare for regionals

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com In the six years since the IHSA expanded to three classes in wrestling, the area has had three Class 3A regional champions on just two occasions, in 2012 and 2010.

Because of some reconfigured regionals, that’s a possibility again this season, but while the area figures to avoid having just one 3A regional champ, as it did in 2011, collecting three again won’t be an easy task.

Lockport and Lincoln-Way Central are not in the same regional for the first time in several years, making them favorites in their competitions. According to the latest GEI Wrestling Apparel rankings on Illinois Matmen, the Porters are eighth and the Knights are 12th.

Lincoln-Way Central hosts a nine-team meet that includes Joliet Central, Joliet West, Lincoln-Way East and Providence. Andrew, Bloom Township, Homewood-Flossmoor, and Lincoln-Way North round out the field.

“We prep for a team type battle every year,” Knights coach Jason DePolo said. “Of course we focus on getting the most number of individuals to the sectional every year, but we prepare as a team.

“Wrestling is a unique sport, and anything can happen. Sometimes it doesn’t always work out how you have it on paper. Just because

you beat someone, or lost to someone previously, does not mean the same result will occur. We need to prepare and wrestle like every match could be our last.”

Lockport will be at the nine-team Bolingbrook Regional. Those schools will be joined by Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North and Romeoville.

Others in the regional are Neuqua Valley, Oswego and Oswego East.

“We are looking forward to competing in the postseason,” Porters coach Josh Oster said. “We wrestle a very strong schedule so that we are prepared for this time of year.

“Our guys have been tested over and over throughout the year so they know what to expect and that when it gets tough out there they’ve been there and succeeded. We’ve improved throughout the season and are excited to compete.”

The area’s other two Class 3A schools, Minooka and Plainfield South, will compete in the nine-team Rock Island Regional. They’ll be joined by Bradley-Bourbonnais, Moline, Normal Community, Pekin, United Township and Yorkville.

Yorkville is top-ranked among teams in the field, at number 15. But Plainfield South has performed well in tournaments all season, and injury-plagued Minooka figures to finally have some-

thing resembling a full lineup this weekend.

“I think that the regional is going to be interesting,” Minooka coach Jeff Charlebois said. “Not to say that we’re necessarily right up there to win it, but it will be interesting to see who steps up. I think that it’s very open.

“It really comes down to what the kids want to throw into it. Hopefully they don’t want to be done as a team or as an individual. So if they throw everything that they’ve got into it, it gives us an opportunity, and that’s what it’s all about.”

While the regional champions will advance to the dual team sectionals, the main focus for all schools will be on trying to advance as many individuals as possible to next weekend’s Normal Community Sectional.

The team sectionals start up after individual state is complete.

As in the past, there is no set sectional site, so qualifying teams will likely be sent to a sectional hosting other meets.

No. 3-ranked Lewis sweeps Sacred Heart SUBMITTED REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – Junior Bobby Walsh had eight blocks, one solo, and five kills as the No. 3-ranked Lewis men’s volleyball team scored a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-13) victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday night at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers (8-1) never trailed in the first set with Walsh recording a kill for the winning point.

Sacred Heart put a scare into the Flyers in the second set. The Pioneers recorded two or more points four times to take an 11-9 lead. It didn’t last long, however. Senior Greg Petty went back to serve and he recorded three aces in a 5-0 run, and the Flyers were on their way to victory.

The third set was highlighted by another service run. Al-

ready up 17-12, Lewis inserted junior Patrick Lilly to serve.

He had three consecutive aces in a 7-0 push to all but end the match. Petty and Lilly helped Lewis record eight aces while committing only 10 service errors.

Lewis out-hit Sacred Heart .377 to .029. Junior setter Scott Fifer dished out 27 assists. Senior Eric Fitterer had a matchhigh 11 kills.

“From a blocking standpoint, it was awesome to see us get dialed in on their offense and get some great touches and put some stuff on the other side,” Lewis coach Dan Friend said. “Overall, it was a real balanced game from the guys and it’s good to see going into next weekend to open up conference play.”

Thibodeau gives history lesson in pacing of a team

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau reads and hears everything, and the fact that critics of the way he paces his team constantly bring up Spurs coach Gregg Popovich hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Popovich has taken the- Tom Thibodeau more-rest-isbetter approach with his veteran team, but some early history is ignored.

“You have to look at your team and where you are,’’ Thibodeau said. “We’ll use Kobe [Bryant] as an example. He’s played 19 years and major minutes and long seasons. At this point in his career, it probably did make sense to scale back.

People use San Antonio as an

example, but in [Tim] Duncan’s first seven years, he was near 40 minutes. Some years he averaged 40 minutes.

“You have to look at your team and see where they are in terms of their age. San Antonio has other issues. Their international players play year-round. A lot factors into it. You also look at has the core been together a long time and do they have championship experience? Maybe that factors into it.

“It comes back to the core of the team being together and having repetitions together so they can execute under duress and they understand when they’re in certain situation how to handle it. It’s case by case.

“There’s no science behind it. Guys get hurt in short minutes. Guys get hurt in long minutes. It’s part of the game. It’s always been part of the game.’’

Rundblad at home on right side

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com David Rundblad just wanted to be on the ice.

Heck, after spending most of the previous season in press boxes across North America, watching his Coyotes and then Blackhawks teammates playing without him nearly every night, had Joel Quenneville told Rundblad he was playing left wing or goaltender, he probably would have just shrugged his shoulders and gone for it.

“I just wanted to play,” he said. “So I’d play wherever he wanted me to.”

So Rundblad didn’t think twice when Quenneville put him on the left side of the Hawks’ third defensive pairing throughout the first half of the season, although he’s a right-handed shot and spent basically his entire adult life playing on the right side.

With the longstanding pairings of Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook, and Johnny Oduya and Niklas Hjalmarsson, and with Michal Rozsival being a stalwart on the

right side, that was the one spot that was available, and Rundblad was happy to have it.

But that doesn’t mean it was easy.

“Being a defenseman, a lot of guys are pretty adept at playing one side, and when you get put on the other side, it’s a whole different ballgame,” Quenneville said.

“Not having played left side, we knew that, it’s not an easy thing to go through and so you’re compromised in a lot of ways.”

So when Quenneville, fed up with a defense that had been the league’s stingiest but was suddenly giving up odd-man breaks with alarming frequency, broke up his unbreakable pairings, he decided to put Rundblad on the right side.

Not only that, he put him alongside two-time Nor ris Trophy-winner Duncan Keith in favorable offensive situations.

Suddenly, Rundblad was at home. And suddenly, he was a weapon. He scored a goal in his first game on the

right side, a cannon of a shot from the right point that was his fourth attempted shot of a virtuoso shift. He scored a goal in his next game, too.

Then he got a primary assist in his third game on the right side. He’s been quieter in the past two games, but is a plus5 overall since moving to the right.

Assistant coach Mike Kitchen had been telling Rundblad to use his big shot more often. Being on the right side has not only given him the confidence to do so, it’s also put him in better position to do so.

“It’s a difference to be there,” Rundblad said. “I’ve been playing on the right side for most of my career. It’s just the small thing, the small details you can do on the right that you can’t do on the left. … It’s hard to explain. Just small stuff when you get the puck, D to D [passes], it’s tougher to open up and find a pass. I’m just more comfortable on that side.”

The more familiar view of the ice has helped him at both ends of the rink.

Wouldn’t we all like to be in that position?

Today is 2/2, so it seems only fair if a two plays a key role in a deal.

This one comes from “Right Through the Pack” by Robert Darvas and Norman de Villiers Hart, which is a fun book containing 52 chapters -- one for each card in the deck.

How does the spade two become critical in this deal? South is in five spades doubled. West leads the heart ace, and South ruffs with his spade three. What happens after that?

The book was originally published in 1948, when bidding was much less refined. Today, West would make a two-heart weak jump overcall. And North, over one heart, would make a negative double (or perhaps pass). As it went, no doubt North should have doubled five hearts and collected the 500-point penalty. But the vulnerability and the necessity not to ruin the story required him to bid five spades. East understandably thought he could defeat that contract.

At the table, South led his spade queen at trick two. East won with his spade ace and returned a heart.

South carefully ruffed with his spade king, not the two, then led that two to dummy’s nine. Now the contract could not be defeated. Declarer lost only two trump tricks.

Of course, if East had been a spoilsport, he would not have won the second trick. Then South would have had to fail. **

water. Menthol can help nasal passages feel more open and sometimes helps calm a cough.

• Elevate your child’s head. This helps the mucus run down, so it doesn’t get stuck at the back of the throat and cause coughing. An extra pillow can do the trick.

• Give lots of fluids.

Your child needs to drink to keep mucus running more freely. Give lots of water, 100 percent juices and soup. Dairy is fine, too: There’s no clear evidence that dairy increases mucus and should be avoided.

• Encourage rest.

Many sick kids spend their days playing video games and watching television -- both of which tend to keep a sleepy child awake. That isn’t to say that children can’t do those or other quiet activities. But you do want to make sure that when your daughter is sick, she gets enough sleep.

• TLC. A good snuggle always makes a kid feel better -- and it may actually support the immune system.

Also, it’s still OK to give acetaminophen or ibuprofen (but not aspirin) for fever, and for aches and pains.

Call your doctor if your child has a bad cough, trouble breathing, or isn’t better within five to seven days.

I don’t want to be alarmist: Unless a child gets hold of a bottle of cold medicine and drinks more than is recommended, the chance of serious problems is relatively small. Still, better safe than sorry.

Dear Doctor K: My 5-year-old daughter has a bad cold, but her pediatrician doesn’t want me to give her over-thecounter cold medication.

What can I do to help her feel better?

Dear Reader: When your child is coughing and congested, it’s tempting to reach for cold medicine. But as your doctor advised (based on guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics), you shouldn’t give overthe-counter cold medicines to children younger than 6 years. These products have caused complications in young children, and even some deaths.

The main problem is that the benefits and side effects (risks) of most cold medicines have not been well-studied in kids – only in adults. This is true for the decongestants phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine, the cough medicines dextromethorphan and guaifenesin, and antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine and diphenhydramine. You may not recognize these names, but I’ll bet you find at least one of them listed on the bottle of cold medicine you might have given to your daughter.

So what’s a parent to do? There are many other ways you can help your child feel better without using medication: • Clear out the mucus.

Use a bulb syringe in the nose (with a couple of drops of saline first) to clear out mucus. This can make a huge difference when it comes to breathing better.

• Keep a humidifier running. This keeps the mucus thinner, which makes it easier to cough, blow or syringe out. Use a cool-mist humidifier, and be sure to clean it regularly. (You don’t want to fill the air with mold and bacteria.) Some folks swear by adding a bit of menthol to the

Dear Torn: You are right to be concerned. Even if Mike promised “not to drink so much,” he might backslide on his promise after the wedding.

Also, has it occurred to you that the whiskey may be part of what is causing Mike’s bad temper? Large quantities of alcohol have been known to alter a person’s perception, and the results can be explosive. If you haven’t already done so, consider attending an ALAnon meeting, which may confirm this.

I’m not a medical doctor, but it would be interesting to know what your boyfriend’s physician thinks about the amount of alcohol he consumes, because the quantity you say Mike puts away may put him at risk for cirrhosis of the liver.

This may be more information than you asked for, but I don’t think Mike is marriage material because it appears he is already wedded to his bottle.

Whenever I’m the center of attention, even if it’s with just one other person, my face goes bright red. This even happens when I’m not feeling embarrassed.

I’ve never been able to come up with a good response.

Telling them I’m not really embarrassed is met with skepticism. Please help. – Red-Faced in Memphis Dear Red-Faced: My advice is to be upfront and tell the questioner that you don’t know why it happens, but you’re not embarrassed. As you already know, blushing can happen if someone suffers from a social phobia.

In cases like that, counseling and support groups can help. However, because you find it happening even when you are not pressured or embarrassed, discuss it with your physician to be sure there isn’t an underlying physical problem.

Dear Abby: I’ve been dating my 42-year-old boyfriend, “Mike,” for a year. I love him, but he’s a heavy drinker. He has a glass or two of whiskey on a daily basis and goes through a huge bottle of whiskey every weekend.

(He also drinks beer like water.) When I asked him to cut back, he refused because he “loves” whiskey. I have never seen him drunk or act intoxicated, so he obviously has a high tolerance.

It bothers me that Mike drinks so much and that he won’t cut back. I told him I wouldn’t marry him unless he does. My problem is, I don’t know whether he’s an alcoholic since he doesn’t
