Joliet councilman O’Dekirk questions potential settlement

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com Joliet City Councilman Bob O’Dekirk wants to know why council members were not informed of a potential settlement of the Evergreen Terrace suit last year.

In a document O’Dekirk presented to the council Tuesday night, a settlement was proposed in a June 3 letter to then-Joliet City Manager Tom Thanas by Sam Vinson of Ungaretti & Harris, the law firm representing owners of Evergreen Terrace.

“The council should have been shown the letter,” said O’Dekirk, who said he became aware of the document just this month.

A key issue, according to the document, was how the owners would resolve costs and attorney fees associated with the suit if Joliet dismissed its condemnation of Evergreen Terrace.

“Owners are prepared to waive costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees in a limited, conditional settlement,” Vinson stated in the letter.

Both O’Dekirk and Councilman Larry Hug expressed concerns about the mounting costs of the Evergreen Terrace litigation.

According to Plyman, the city has spent about $4.5 million on the associated suits so far.

The council set aside $3.5 million in 2005 for condemnation of the property and to defend itself in a defamation suit by the owners.

Up until 2013, court costs were covered out of the general fund. Since then, about $2 million has been spent out of the reserve fund, leaving about $1.6 million, which Plyman said should be more than adequate to cover the core legal issues.

O’Dekirk asked, noting the city will still have to contend with additional trials, probably an appeal and finally the cost of relocating 115 residents from the beleaguered residential project.

Things were also chaotic for the scenario that ran through several classrooms where a professor became irate after being denied tenure and started shooting. EMS instructor Char Garrabrant was a last-minute understudy for the culprit and was able to claim several victims, including the first person to rush at her.

But another employee appeared to get caught up in the reality of the drill and tackled Garrabrant to the hallway floor – apparently cracking one of her ribs.

“I always have fun at these things,” Garrabrant said while getting into a wheelchair to be taken to the door as an ambulance was called.

Campus safety officer Jake Van Duyne played a student who believed his concealed carry permit allowed him to bring a gun on campus and went into the hallway after Garrabrant.

“There was another concealed carry from the other room and we didn’t know and shot each other,” Van Duyne said.

JOLIET – While there is statistically little chance of a gunman attacking the Joliet Junior College campus, preparing for such an attack will likely always be part of the training for staff and police.

“Every time people start getting tired of these drills there’s another incident somewhere [that shows] this is something we have to prepare for,” JJC Police Chief Pete Comanda said.

About 200 people – including a large number of custodial and groundskeeping employees, as well as security and police officers from other nearby colleges – met in the U building Tuesday afternoon while classes weren’t scheduled. After watching a video about how to secure the room they were in if a shooting started and making “fight or flight” decisions, participants were randomly grouped into different classrooms and hallways for the mock scenario.

Comanda has tried to introduce different elements during the eight years of staging these drills. This year two rooms got separate drills while the “main” chaos was unfolding in adjacent hallways. When Joann Donnelly shut the classroom door, everyone thought she was reacting to the noise outside.

“They were all surprised when I turned around and opened my jacket to show all the ‘explosives’ I had strapped to me,” the campus safety officer said.

One man rushed at Donnelly, who was playing a deranged student demanding the legalization of marijuana, and “ended up killing everybody.” But Take 2 allowed time for the police to arrive and negotiate.

Lockport student crafts state law Tyler Woodworth honored by Council for Exceptional Children

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Tyler Woodworth is no stranger to adversity.

Woodworth has been able to water ski, rock climb and play hockey even with cerebral palsy.

But when the Lockport Township High School senior found out able-bodied student-athletes could waive a physical education requirement and enroll in another academic course, but students with disabilities involved in athletics could not, he embarked on creating a new state law.

Woodworth himself is an athlete who plays for the Chicago Hornets youth sled hockey team and wanted to enroll in a computer design course.

But trying to fix this loophole in state school codes wasn’t the only goal for him.

“My second goal was really to show people like legislators that anybody can go to Springfield or [Washington] D.C., and get something done if they put their minds to it,” he said.

On July 23, both goals became a reality when Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law a bill that would allow school districts to excuse students with disabilities from required physical education classes if they are involved in athletic programs.

For his effort, Woodworth was named the Yes I Can award recipient for self-advocacy by the Council for Exceptional Children, an organization dedicated to improving the educational success of individuals with

Lockport Township High School officials couldn’t be prouder of Woodworth’s effort to cause major change for himself and other student athletes with disabilities.

“He has been instrumental in putting a face on this problem,” said Angela Huntington, the high school’s special education director.

Woodworth’s father, Adam Woodworth, executive director of the Children’s

Museum in Oak Lawn, said he and his wife have never put obstacles in front of their son. When his son wanted to try adaptive water skiing or play sled hockey, which he does for the Chicago Hornets, they always let him try.

“Tyler was always kind of a go-getter,” he said.

It was the same way when Woodworth approached him about making a change in state law to help students with disabilities. Both of

them reached out to representatives such as state Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Lockport, and state Sen. Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago, who both ended up sponsoring the bill.

“It was an interesting process,” Adam Woodworth said about trying to create and pass state legislation. “I know it was [an] education for Tyler and for me. I didn’t know how any of this stuff kind of worked.”

Helping to usher in a state law may not be the extent of

Tyler Woodworth’s work to help people with disabilities.

His father said he might look becoming a mechanical engineer so he can design adaptive equipment for people with disabilities.

Whatever the future holds for Tyler Woodworth, he will likely approach it with the “go-getter” attitude that’s defined his past accomplishments.

“I’ve always been one to go ahead and take the lead on some things,” he said.

Troy school district investigated on racial harassment complaint Mother says her son was punished unfairly

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C is under investigation for allegedly subjecting a student to different disciplinary treatment on the basis of race and for not responding to racial harassment, according to a statement by the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Right.

The OCR evaluated a complaint sent by Joliet resident Catherine Miles regarding her son’s treatment at William B.

Orenic Intermediate School.

Earlier this month, it determined the complaint and evidence was sufficient enough to warrant an investigation.

“African-Americans in this community are just not valued,” Miles said, adding that the school district doesn’t have minority representation in administration, lacks black and Hispanic teachers and doesn’t have a comprehensive black history education.

“This is something that needs to be recognized. The complaint is just the first step.”

The complaint states that

in August 2013, the school district failed to take appropriate action after Miles’ son was subjected to a racial slur, and that her son was treated differently on the basis of race in numerous incidents when school officials punished him without hearing his perspective.

Miles took her son out of the school nearly seven weeks ago after he felt targeted by students and staff. He is studying at home with school services through federal homebound provisions.

Miles said she believes discrimination of her son could stem from when she spoke at a board meeting about the lack of education and recognition of Black History Month in February. She claims her comments weren’t recorded in those meeting minutes.

Miles also said she has had discussions with White and other school officials about the lack of diversity in administration, faculty and staff.

White said he has been in discussions with other school officials to diversify the district. He confirmed there are currently no non-white administrative employees.

“It’s not just us. Everyone is struggling with this issue,” White said, referencing other school districts. “We want a teaching staff that reflects the makeup of students and the community.”

Miles said she plans to speak at Wednesday’s school district board meeting about the importance of black history and empowering students through a diverse staff.

She also said she plans to organize a march in the next two weeks that will advocate for diverse recruiting in the school district.

The school district will hold its regular board meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Troy Middle School Auditorium, 5800 W. Theodore St., Plainfield.

Miles said she had talked with several school officials about her son’s several disciplinary writeups before taking her complaint to the OCR. “It felt like they were just thinking I would go away, but I’m not that type of person,” Miles said. “I was legally consulted to take all avenues before going to the Office of Civil Rights.”

Superintendent Don White confirmed that he met with Miles on several occasions, but he said he couldn’t comment on student disciplinary cases.

“Personally, I don’t agree with the accusations,” White said. “But we do want to cooperate completely with any investigation. If we are doing something wrong, we want to know and we’ll do everything we can to respond to that.”

A. The Illinois Workers’ Compensation laws recognize that workers who travel for the benefit of their employers are entitled to and should get better protection. This is because such travelers frequently encounter unknown environments, and often are subjective to additional risks. Generally, for employees who do not travel other than to the employer’s premises, going to and from work is not covered by the Workers’ Compensation Act. Employees only enter the scope of their employment when they enter or leave the employers premises within a reasonable time before or after work. The “bright line” of “course of employment” generally starts and stops at the boundary line of the employer’s facility. However, occasionally this can be extended, if, for example, the employer provides an offsite parking lot close to the facility. However, if employees park at a parking lot across the street which does not have a relationship to the employer, they still aren’t in the course of employment until they arrive on the employers premises.

Another example is a recent traveling employee we represented who had to catch a flight. He never flew, and didn’t care to fly. He injured himself handling his luggage, and a settlement was reached. The rules for traveling employees generally are that if their activity is foreseeable, and an injury results from this foreseeable risk, that the injury is then in the course of and arising out of the employment. Another example is where an employee was taking the mail to the post office on a public street, and injured her ankle in a pot hole. She was rushing at the time. The claim was found compensable. However, recently the Illinois Supreme Court held that where an employee takes an out-of-town position, out of the union hall, and stays at a local motel during the particular construction project, that going to and from work is the ordinary going to and from work, and not that of a traveling employee, as he knowingly moved the site of his employment. His claim for injuries from a vehicular accident between the hotel and work was denied.

As with many issues in workers compensation, traveling employee issues can be tricky, and, as always, I recommend the injured work at least contact a lawyer on day one so he will know the two initial, most vital, issues, which are whether he can expect workers’ compensation, and whether the bills should go through group insurance or go to workers’ compensation.

Q. My father is 94 years old.

My mother died in February of this year. My father is not in the best of health. My problem is that he refuses to get a living will and refuses to give me or my brother his Power of Attorney for Health Care. After what happened to that poor woman in Florida several years ago, my brother and I do not want to have to argue or fight with anyone over what to do if we have to make decisions about lifesustaining treatment for my father. What do we do?

A. Fortunately, here in Illinois we have the Health Care Surrogate Act. It became effective in 1991. It can be found in the Illinois Compiled Statutes at Chapter 755, Sections 40/5 – 40/65.

This Act provides procedures to allow a health care provider or a health care facility to appoint a surrogate decision maker (a “stand-in”) for a patient who does not have the capacity to make decisions concerning life-sustaining treatment and who does not have a health care power of attorney or a living will.

The patient’s attending physician first makes the determination that the adult patient lacks decisional capacity to a reasonable degree of medical certainty. At least one other physician must concur with the patient’s attending physician.

If no health care power of attorney can be found, then the following persons in the following hierarchical order can serve as the patient’s health care surrogate: 1. The patient’s guardian.

2. The patient’s spouse.

3. Any adult son or daughter of the patient.

4. Either parent of the patient.

5. Any adult brother or sister of the patient.

6. Any adult grandchild of the patient.

7. A close friend of the patient.

8. The patient’s guardian of the estate.

The surrogate then can make decisions concerning life sustaining treatments for the patient.

This Act does not include patients who require involuntary mental health services.

The Act also is not intended to condone, authorize or approve mercy killing as assisted suicide.

If a health care provider or facility is unable to comply with this Act because of personal values, conscience or policies, then the patient must be immediately referred to a provider or facility which will follow the procedures of the Act. Most health care facilities have protocols and procedures in place to provide a patient with a health care surrogate. Ask to talk with the hospital’s or nursing home’s social worker.

So, if your father continues to refuse to sign a living will or a health care power of attorney, then as long as he is being treated in Illinois by a health care provider or health care facility and lacks decisional capacity, then you or your brother can be appointed his health care surrogate. Your father probably does not want to think about becoming incompetent.

So don’t argue with him anymore about executing a health care power of attorney. Just remember you have a hidden ace up your sleeve if he winds up incapacitated and in the hospital: You’ve got the Illinois Health Care Surrogate Act. Please call me or my partner, Jennifer Lynch, if we can help you.

Do I need to worry about Medicare?

A. Yes. Maybe. Actually, your lawyer needs to worry.

There are several factors he/she needs to consider: 1. When are you qualified for social security and/or Medicare? (i.e. Is your spouse already receiving it and you are taking under your spouse ) 2. When are you planning on going onto social security or Medicare? (age 62, 65, 70, etc.)?

3. Are you already on social security disability?

These questions are important in that they determine if, and when, Medicare needs to be contacted in an injury situation. The law requires all persons who are Medicare qualified to report to Medicare when any third party may be responsible for payments for treatment. Since a defendant in an injury case (filed or unfiled) may be responsible, notice to Medicare is required. This is true

even if you do not hire a lawyer and are dealing directly with the insurance carrier of the person who hit you.

Even if you don’t report it, under the law, the insurance company must report.

Why is this important to know? Well, from the attorney’s perspective, it is necessary to know so that the proper paperwork can be completed in a timely manner so as to not slow down the legal process. For you, it means that Medicare will be potentially getting some of the settlement or verdict money. If it is a Worker’s Compensation case too, there may need to be a Medicare Set Aside Trust. In all instances, it means you will need to fill out a few extra forms and that you and your lawyer will need to discuss Medicare’s right to reimbursement and the effect of that on your case.

Play it safe. If you are on Medicare or potentially will be on Medicare in the next 5-10 years, ask your lawyer how familiar he/she is with the Medicare procedures. The more they know, the better off you will be.

JOLIET – Court documents show that the 23-year-old Cicero man charged with fatally shooting his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend last week in Romeoville had previously threatened to rape and kill her.

Erick M. Maya, 23, of the 5600 block of Central Park Avenue in Cicero, was charged with murder Tuesday. He pleaded not guilty. He previously had been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and Erick M. one count of Maya unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. One attempted murder charge was dropped as prosecutors charged Maya with the murder of Valle.

The charge was upgraded after Briana Valle, 15, died Monday. She was shot in the head while with her mother, Alicia Guerrero, 33, in the driveway outside their Romeoville home Thursday morning. Her mother was shot in the neck but is recovering from her wound.

Guerrero took out an emergency order of protection last year against Maya, saying she and her daughter feared for their safety. Maya threatened to rape and kill Valle last year, according to court documents, and the order of protection was extended last month.

Maya and Valle, a Romeoville High School student, had previously been in a dating relationship, police said.

Court documents show Maya had been harassing the

mother via text messaging beginning in January 2013.

In March, the mother filed an order of protection in Cook County, where the family lived before moving to Romeoville in October.

In December, Maya allegedly texted one of Valle’s friends, saying he planned to rape the mother and daughter and kidnap Valle.

Valle met Maya on Facebook in June 2012, and they ran away together in August of that year, according to court documents. The mother found her daughter at Maya’s Cicero home in September, but, according to court documents, chose not to press charges because “at this time my daughter was obsessed with Erick.”

Valle’s obsession with Maya apparently turned to fear by December, according to court documents filed by her mother. Guerrero stated that her daughter “doesn’t want to hear from him anymore” and that she feels “afraid of him and what he might do to us.”

Maya is accused of opening fire on Valle and her mother as they were in their car at about 7 a.m. outside their home in the 300 block of Emery Avenue.

Maya appeared via video at the Will County Courthouse on Tuesday.

Maya’s bond was set at $5 million. A preliminary hearing was set for 9 a.m. March 11 at the Will County Courthouse.

A release from Valley View School District said students and staff were planning this week to wear blue and orange as a sign of unity and support for the Valle family. The school also will put counseling support in place for any students who need assistance dealing with the loss.

Expo 2014 to be held Friday and Saturday Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s first big event of the year

The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry will host Expo 2014 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Louis Joliet Mall.

About 70 businesses and organizations are scheduled to display their goods and services at the event, according to Mary Jaworski, Chamber vice president. It’s the Chamber’s 16th expo at the mall.

“For those who want consumer business, it’s a great opportunity to get out there and meet the public,” Jawor-

ski said. “And in weather like this, people go out to the mall, so even better.”

Mall traffic on the weekends can be as high as 30,000, she noted.

Primary expo sponsors are Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and Silver Cross Hospital. Other sponsors include Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, Advance Family Dental and Parc at Joliet, Jaworski said.

In addition to the booths and displays, the sweets and tchotchkes given away by vendors are a big part of the event’s popularity.

Milano Bakery, which usually gives away cupcakes or cookies, has been one of the most popular booths over

the years, Jaworski said.

“They get tons of interest.”

The expo is the chamber’s first big blast in 2014, which

also marks its 100th year in existence.

Channahon OKs 2 projects Concrete plant expansion and new truck facility will bring jobs

BY JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Two projects could mean more jobs in Channahon.

The Channahon Village Board on Monday approved site plans for an expansion of Utility Concrete Products and the construction of a new truck repair facility.

Fifty new workers could be hired for the expansion site plan that was approved for Utility Concrete Products, LLC, at 2495 Bungalow Road. The business opened at the site in 2004 and produces precast concrete products for the communication, electrical and transportation industries.

The Village Board unanimously approved a 50,000-square-foot concrete plant and outside storage on the west end of the site. An earthen berm will be installed along the north and west for screening. There are county residences to the west. No sprinklers will be required

in the new building, as it will be classified noncombustible and fire-resistant.

A full engineering report must be submitted and approved by village staff before construction may begin.

The site plan for B&W Truck Repair Inc. on S. Riverside Drive at NW Frontage Road was also unanimously approved. The owner, Robert Bromberek, plans to build a 12,087-square-foot facility on the 2.46-acre site to house the full-service commercial truck and heavy equipment repair facility.

Approximately 11,000 square feet of the new facility will be the repair shop, constructed as a pre-engineered metal crane building, and the rest will be office space, constructed of load-bearing masonry walls.

The owner told village staff that five to ten employees will work at the new facility.

Obstacle removed for potential interchange ROMEOVILLE – The path to a future interchange at Interstate 55 and Weber Road was made smoother with legislation signed this month.

The bill signed by Gov. Pat Quinn takes away a condition that required the state to sell 200 acres of land to pay for the interchange.

The land located in Crest Hill has yet to sell. So, the legislation allows the state to move forward with the project before it finds a buyer. However, the project is still awaiting funding from the state before it can become a reality.

A law passed seven years ago designated 200 acres of land in Crest Hill as surplus state property and reallocated it for sale. The proceeds of the sale – estimated in 2007 to bring as much as $30 million – were to be used to help pay for improvements to the Weber Road and Interstate 55 interchange.

The Will-South Cook Soil & Water Conservation District has announced that it will award two $1,000 scholarships at its Annual Pork Chop Dinner on March 6 at the Peotone Atrium.

Will Kibler, a senior at Plainfield Central High School, will receive the 2014 Allan May Memorial Conservation Education Scholarship. Kibler, the son of William and Kathy Kibler of Lockport, plans to attend Joliet Junior College in the fall and study for a career in forestry management.

Lindsay Johnson, a senior at Peotone High School, will receive the 2014 Richard “Dick” McHugh Conservation Education Scholarship.

The state has not yet allocated funding for the project, a spokeswoman for Bertino-Tarrant said Tuesday. However, the legislation would allow the interchange project to move ahead regardless of whether the 200 acres in Crest Hill can be sold.

Will County officials estimate an average of 31,700 vehicles travel on Weber north of the interchange each day and 31,000 travel south of it.

IDOT estimates that an average of 107,800 vehicles travel each day on I-55 south of the interchange and 133,700 travel north toward the entrance of I-355.

“It is imperative that this roadway can handle our increased traffic and that residents and commuters are able to travel safely,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

“This road project will accomplish that.”

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – A sixmonth drug investigation ended Sunday night when police found a forest of marijuana plants in a man’s basement.

Nhat V. Hoang, 52, was not there when the Will County Sheriff’s Gang Suppression Unit and Manhattan officers raided his residence in the 25200 block of Spring Street, but was arrested when he came home Monday, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

Hoang was arrested on charges of production of cannabis plants, delivery of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held in the county jail on $50,000 bond.

Hoffmeyer said when offi-

cers executed the search warrant they found 639 cannabis plants downstairs.

“The entire basement of the Nhat V. residence was Hoang split up into Manhattan growing rooms – each containing elaborate electrical, venting and irrigation systems,” Hoffmeyer said.

A digital scale, heat sealer and boxes of heat-sealed bags were also found during the search, Hoffmeyer said.

Police estimate the marijuana plants have a street value of $350,000.

After finding the plants, police kept the house under surveillance to arrest Hoang, Hoffmeyer said. A 2005 Acura SUV was also seized, according to reports.

Records do not list Hoang as the owner of the house. He provided a Chicago address when arrested for a traffic violation in 2012.

Proposed registry would track people convicted of animal abuse crimes

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Making sure every rescued animal finds a loving home is something Gina Bartucci takes seriously.

“We send emails between different shelters and rescues to create a ‘do not adopt’ or ‘do not foster’ list,” said Bartucci, president of All Those Left Behind Animal Rescue in Morris. “We want to make sure an animal isn’t going home with someone with a history of abusing animals.”

Bartucci’s job may become a little easier thanks to a piece of legislation recently introduced by state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and originally submitted by Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

The proposed bill would require all Illinois residents convicted of an animal abuse crime to be listed in the national Do Not Adopt Registry maintained by the Animal Legal Defense Fund. It could also require all shelters, rescues, breeders and pet stores to consult the registry before selling, adopting out or transferring an animal.

If passed, the bill would put Illinois on the map as the first state to create an animal abuser registry.

“It’s a great bill,” Rezin said. “It will help with information and making sure people convicted of animal abuse will not be allowed to adopt.”

The idea for the bill germinated in Helland’s office. He and legal intern Dawn McDermott looked into creating an animal abuse registry after his office received several complaints about the lack of regulation in place for pet adoptions.

They worked closely with Chris Green from the Animal Legal Defense Fund to research the steps needed to include Illinois offenders in the defense fund’s existing database.

They presented their findings to Rezin, who drafted

proposed legislation based on their research.

“I couldn’t believe there was nothing like this already in place,” Rezin said. “This is a perfect example of someone locally – in this case the state’s attorney – seeing an issue that needs to be addressed and being proactive.”

While the defense fund’s current database is national, it is not supported by laws requiring each state to submit criminal offenders. By doing so, this bill would make the database more complete and therefore a better resource to those adopting out animals, Rezin said.

Residents convicted of animal cruelty, aggravated animal cruelty, animal torture, poisoning an animal or dog fighting would be required by law to be included in the registry.

“This would be a national registry so an offender couldn’t go to another state to try to adopt an animal,” Rezin said.

The state would incur little to no cost when joining the registry since it will continue to be maintained by the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

Rezin said the cost of managing such a comprehensive database has prevented Illinois and other states from creating the registry themselves.

“It’s great because at a very little cost, we can share a lot of information,” Helland said.

Because it would be so inexpensive, he thinks the bill stands a chance of becoming state law.

“There’s a lot of bills that never become laws,” Helland said. “But based on how well it was drafted by the committee, I don’t see why it wouldn’t pass.”

Rezin will officially roll out the new legislation within the next few weeks. Helland and Green will testify in support of the bill when it is unveiled.

“We are really excited about this,” Rezin said. “If this passes it would be a first, but we certainly hope other states will follow.”

Patrick J. Cleary, age 87, of Joliet, passed away Monday, February 17, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born January 30, 1927 in Joliet, he was the son of the late Harry and Rosan (nee Hannaway) Cleary, and a lifelong Joliet resident.

He was a graduate of St. Patrick Grade School, Joliet Catholic High, and Joliet Junior College where he played on their champion baseball team as a pitcher.

He was an Army veteran of World War II. Retired from the United States Post Office as a mail carrier after more than 35 years of service, and later worked for First Midwest Bank.

Pat was an avid golfer and as a young man was quite a bowler and baseball player. Member of St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #300 and American Legion Post #1080.

Reynolds, once a rising star in the Democratic Party whose career collapsed when he was convicted of rape two decades ago, is under arrest again, this time for allegedly possessing pornography and violating immigration laws in Zimbabwe.

Reynolds, who had won some prominence in Zimbabwe for helping draw investment to hotel and office projects, was being held in custody and was expected to appear in court soon, immigration official Ario Mabika said Tuesday.

The ex-politician, who lost his seat in Congress almost two decades ago because of the statutory rape conviction, was arrested Monday by police and immigration officials at a Harare hotel, according to The Herald.

Candidates debate in Springfield The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ four Republican gubernatorial candidates said Tuesday that they are willing to work with unions if elected but differed on how to approach the relationship during a debate that largely focused on pension reform, taxes, business and briefly on personal issues that have dogged some of them.

Treasurer Dan Rutherford, businessman Bruce Rauner and state Sens. Kirk Dillard and Bill Brady concentrated their comments on how to defeat Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, making only fleeting references to allegations of misconduct and negative ads that have surfaced in recent weeks.

Rauner – who has been attacked in TV, radio and print ads sponsored by unions – said the relationship between government and unions is one of the most important issues.

He has made fighting “government union bosses” a campaign theme.

“I’m not against the existence of unions,” Rauner told attendees of the downstate debate sponsored by the Citizens Club of Springfield. “I believe that their power needs to be restricted.”

Rutherford said there has to a balance between union positions and nonunionized positions, but there wasn’t one yet. The Chenoa Republican has recently faced allegations of misconduct by a former employee, but the issue was mentioned just once in a question.

Brady, who lost the governor’s race to Quinn in 2010, went after the governor, who faced a union lawsuit over withholding union employee raises and lost the case in 2012.

“He has failed in developing a relationship with the unions,” Brady said, after arguing that he’s in the best position to take on Quinn again. “The rematch against Pat Quinn and myself will be a fun one. There’s a great deal of buyers’ remorse out there.”

WASHINGTON – With peace talks failing, Syria’s government on the offensive and moderate rebels pushed aside by al-Qaida-linked militants, the Obama administration is struggling for new ideas to halt a savage civil war.

Extending beyond Syria, the crisis also is an accelerating national security threat to the United States, officials say. And that, in part, has led to a fresh look at previously shelved ideas, including more robust assistance to Western-backed rebels.

Officials also have looked at newer, more far-reaching options, including drone strikes on rebel factions who might aspire to attack the United States – though such strikes are seen as unlikely for now.

American officials remain hampered by the same constraints that have stymied the U.S. response throughout the three-year civil war, including concern that lethal assistance could end up in the hands of extremists. And then there also is President Barack Obama’s own distaste for military action.

Speaking cautiously, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday, “We have to examine what the alternatives some might be proposing are and whether they’re in our national security interest.”

He added that the administration also was concerned about whether stepped-up intervention could lead to “unintended consequences.”

Obama has yet to approve any policy shift. But his top aides plan to meet at the White House before week’s end to examine options, according to officials. They weren’t autho-

rized to talk publicly on the matter and spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Giving new impetus to the review is what the Obama administration calls Syria’s emerging “threat to the homeland.” In recent weeks, the president’s senior national security aides have delivered dire warnings about extremist havens in Syria, and about Americans and other Westerners joining the fight and being radicalized.

“Syria has become a matter of homeland security,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said this month.

In separate testimony before Congress, National Intelligence Director James Clapper estimated there were about 26,000 extremists in Syria, including around 7,000 foreigners, in an insurgency encompassing 75,000 to 110,000 fighters.

Jabhat al-Nusra, for example, one of the most powerful rebel factions, has “aspirations” for attacks on the United States, he said.

By any account, the current U.S. policy of sending limited military aid for Syria’s moderate opposition coupled with support for U.N.-brokered peace talks between the rebels and Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government isn’t working.

Appalling scenes of emaciated children leaving the besieged city of Homs last week underscored the desperate plight of many Syrians – and the potential for more suffering. A second round of Geneva negotiations ended last weekend with little promise for a future breakthrough and with fresh American frustrations with Russia, which is Assad’s most powerful military and diplomatic supporter.

If you go to the website of the company that manufactures their eyewear, you might be in for a shock.

On the Australian section of Bolle.com, photos of Lassila, Jacobellis and other competitors at the Sochi Games have been digitally blurred to obscure their faces.

This isn’t a throwback to the days when Soviet propaganda chiefs airbrushed people out of photos. It’s an extreme application of regulations meant to make sure that companies such as Bolle, which do not sponsor the Olympics, don’t get to advertise off the back of them.

For Olympians, the dense and confusing thicket of rules severely restricting advertising is a serious issue. In theory, Olympians could be disqualified if they use the games to plug non-approved brands.

The International Olympic Committee even holds athletes responsible for how their sponsors behave outside the Olympic bubble.

Rule 40 of the IOC charter states: “Except as permitted by the IOC executive board, no competitor, coach, trainer or official who participates in the Olympic Games may allow his person, name, picture or sports performances to be used for advertising purposes during the Olympic Games.”

The rule means athletes cannot allow their images to be used for any commercial advertising, whether Olympic-related or not, for the duration of the blackout period.

New Penn State leader begins amid challenges

By MARK SCOLFORO The Associated Press STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – When Eric Barron was hired this week to be Penn State’s next president, he said he hoped to strengthen the institution, starting by learning for Eric Barron himself about conditions at the university where he worked as a professor and dean for 20 years.

Even before he takes office by mid-May, Barron can expect to hear from students, alumni, employees and Nittany Lions football fans, many who will place fallout from the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal high on their list of concerns.

“The truth of the matter is, the first thing I’d like to do is tap

each dean on the shoulder and say, ‘I’d like to spend a half-day with you,’” he said, hoping to learn what he needs to know to lead one of the country’s largest and most prominent universities.

Barron, 62, will be returning to Penn State from Florida State, where he has been president for four years. He takes over an institution with 98,000 students at 20 campuses, more than half a million alumni, a $4.3 billion budget and an unresolved question about how to address the legacy of longtime football coach Joe Paterno, whose statue was removed from outside the football stadium soon after Sandusky’s conviction in 2012.

The Sandusky scandal will remain an issue for the Penn State administration, as former president Graham Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz await trial on charges they engaged in a criminal cover-up of the matter.

911 tapes should be open to public Journalists and politicians alike are occasionally accused of playing emotions to manipulate a certain reaction, and in some cases the criticism is warranted.

We’re hoping state Sen. Bill Cunningham’s proposed legislation to exempt 911 calls from Illinois Freedom Information Act is just a misguided notion instead of outright manipulation, but Cunningham, D-Chicago, is wrong either way.

The legislation is a reaction to the release of 911 tapes from the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, which Cunningham found to be a violation of “personal privacy.”

The broadcasting of the 911 calls, and many other 911 calls, was certainly a grave ethical issue for journalists.

Many news outlets wrestled with the difficult matter, coming to different conclusions. NBC, for example, decided not to air any of the recordings.

CNN aired portions but also covered the ethical dilemma.

There can be, and are, journalistic reasons why the public should hear 911 recordings in many instances.

Obviously, they are used in court proceedings for a reason. They have evidentiary value, and Cunningham’s legislation would allow the release of such records if they are used in court.

But this legislation and other proposals like it that seek to shield records from the public are less about journalism than they are about the government’s right to hide information.

If media outlets choose to exploit sensitive information without editorially sound reasons, then the public can judge them for that and they should expect a backlash. But that’s the viewer’s decision, not the government’s.

You might not like a particular news outlet or journalist, but there are thousands of them – most of whom try to operate under a code of principles.

Ask yourself whether you trust all Illinois government agencies more than any journalist or member of the public before considering whether exempting 911 calls from the Freedom of Information Act or any entire category of information is a good idea.

Illinois government strikes again SPRINGFIELD – Susan Clause is no quitter.

For 16 years, she and her husband, Stephen Briggs, have owned and operated a teacher supply store, Ergadoo, in Springfield.

They love their business, and it’s making money, but they are shutting it down this week.

Why? They say the state of Illinois has made it too difficult to operate.

It’s a painful decision for the couple who founded the store 16 years ago.

After all, they aren’t quitters by nature. They fought to keep the doors open when Susan was fighting leukemia and Stephen was battling prostate cancer – at the same time.

And there have been tough days when they have found themselves unloading truckloads of merchandise by themselves or wading through reams of paperwork.

But now they are facing an obstacle they just don’t want to deal with: the Illinois Department of Revenue.

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder Here how Susan explained it: “Five years ago, we received a sales tax audit from the state, and they said we were doing things just fine. And then we were audited again this year. And we were told we were doing things wrong. We can’t operate if we don’t know what the rules are.”

For 10 days last month, a state auditor camped out at their store – sitting at one of those tiny little children’s tables – reviewing three months of receipts.

And that’s where the problem began.

You see, Ergadoo is the sort of business that has many nonprofits as customers – schools, churches, nurseries.

Those types of organizations don’t have to pay sales taxes.

So, teachers, church secretaries and principals often come in bearing letters from the Illinois Department of Revenue declaring their organizations’ sales tax exemptions.

Susan and her husband dutifully record the transaction – along with their tax exemption number.

Sounds good, right?

Well, no. The Revenue Department says that’s not good enough.

Clause said the Revenue Department told her it’s her store’s responsibility to determine where the customer’s money comes from.

“How am I supposed to prove if someone comes in with a $20 bill and a tax-exempt letter whether that money is from a school’s petty cash fund or someplace else? I can’t. No one can,” Susan said.

The reason behind the rule is to keep people from borrowing a letter from a nonprofit and stocking up on stuff for their own personal use.

Ergadoo sells things like multiplication tables, classroom bulletin board displays and those cheesy teacher posters.

You know, ones like “Clock watchers, time will pass. … You may not.”

And I’ll go out on a limb here, it’s hard to believe this sort of thing would be used any place but in a classroom.

But bureaucrats don’t care.

After examining three months of transactions such as these the auditor declared that the store owed $800 in back sales taxes.

“I told the auditor the state spent more to have you here for 10 days than it will end up collecting,” Susan said.

Then the other shoe dropped.

“We were told the state would plug the findings of the audit into some sort of formula and come up with a tax bill for the last three years. We’re guessing that will be about $8,000.”

After the salaries they drew from their business that is more than the store’s profits for the last two years.

“We operated under the assumption that we were doing things right – the last auditor told us we were.

Now we are being told differently and having to pay back taxes. Sure, we could appeal this or go to court.

But we don’t want to hire a lawyer – that would cost us more than they say we owe.

So we are shutting down.”

Fortunately, Susan and Stephen have an alternative – they are expanding the children’s museum they operate next door, Ergadoozy, into the area the store is vacating.

But Springfield educators will now have to drive 70 miles to Peoria if they want to shop at a teacher supply store. Or more likely, they will buy online from some out-of-state firm, and Illinois will lose even more commerce.

Susan and Stephen are losing the business they have nurtured for 16 years.

It doesn’t make sense.

Stephen put it this way: “This is government. It’s not supposed to make ‘sense.’ It’s about dollars, and government trying to find a way to suck them right out of your pocket.”

Balancing the safety of students It can be difficult at times to balance the rights of someone accused of a crime and the rights of others to feel safe.

When dealing with schoolchildren, it seems as though scales should weigh more toward the safety of students.

That’s not always the case right now.

We’re not talking about youthful indiscretions such as being caught shoplifting or drinking. Rather, there are students in some districts who are facing charges ranging from aggravated assault to sexual assault.

Unless it happens on school grounds or involves a student or faculty member away from school grounds, there is little school officials can do under state law.

Except in specific – and pretty severe – circumstances such as those already mentioned, school districts cannot suspend or expel these students.

Administrators’ hands are essentially bound in too many cases. It’s time Illinois gave administrators the latitude to deal with this concern that other states have.

State Rep. Jay Hoffman has introduced legislation that would allow more leeway for handling such situations.

Hoffman, a Belleville Democrat, proposed the change after a concerned parent brought to his attention that students at Belleville East High School were attending classes with a 17-year-old charged with the sexual assault of a student in December. The teen’s arrest record included two counts of aggravated battery and illegal possession of ammunition from months earlier, according to the Belleville News-Democrat.

While expulsion before conviction seems like an excessive punishment, there should be mechanisms in place that do not force

students to fear for their own safety in the interim. Suspension should be an option at the time serious felonies are alleged, with expulsion coming if the student is convicted.

Other possibilities could include alternative school or home-schooling and would help keep an accused student from having to forgo his or her own education.

Out-of-school activities unfortunately can have an adverse impact on a school setting. While schools should not be put in the position of trying to replace parental responsibility or given the authority to control students’ actions outside of the classroom, they should have the ability to review cases on an individual basis and do what is best for the majority of the students, staff and faculty.

We hope lawmakers see the differences between the two and take action to protect the rights of all involved.

That’s what Joliet Catholic Academy girls basketball coach Ed Schodrof is hoping for as his highly regarded squad begins postseason play.

The Angels took it on the chin last week in a showdown with Marian Catholic. But rather than dwelling on that setback, the team is looking forward.

And that process began on Tuesday when JCA kicked off the IHSA Class 3A playoffs against Lincoln-Way West in the Morris Regional semifinals.

Despite a delayed start due to an accident on I-80, the Angels were ready to go against a Warrior squad that overcame a big fourth-quarter deficit against Morris on Monday.

JCA jumped out to 8-0 and 20-3 advantages to start the contest, led 43-19 at the break and then went on a 14-0 run to open up the final half.

All of those bursts resulted in the Angels capturing a 79-

31 victory over West to earn a spot in Thursday’s title game against Providence Catholic, which ended after press time.

“The loss to Marian Catholic was kind of a wake-up call for us,” Schodrof said.

“We had three really solid days of practice where people were really locked in. I kind

of saw that the attitude was outstanding during the whole practice week.

“We came in with good energy today. I thought that we had maybe two lulls, maybe one in the second quarter.

But then at the start of the second half I thought that the energy was outstanding

again.”

JCA used baskets from Nicole Ekhomu, Christine Ekhomu, Jasmine Lumpkin and Jnaya Walker to grab the quick advantage and help it win for the 23rd time in 25 tries.

Lumpkin wound up leading the way with 18 points

and eight rebounds.

Nicole Ekhomu scored all 15 of her points in the opening half while Kennedy Weigt came off the bench to toss in 12 points after the break.

Ty Battle added eight points, Mia Farrell chipped in with seven points and Walker scored six points for the Angels.

Warriors coach Ryan White realized that his squad would have its hands full against JCA, but was proud to see them battle the previous night to extend their 15-12 season by one more game.

“I was glad that we fought last night to get to this point,” White said. “They’re probably one of the two or three teams that could win it all.

We were down by 11 in the fourth quarter and the girls could have easily said ‘that’s it’, especially knowing who we had tonight.

“Overall, I thought it was a very positive season, especially with a lot of young kids and hopefully we can build on that.”

West got eight points from Courtney O’Donnell while Dani Morgan added seven points.

Plainfield South girls basketball mounted a frantic comeback in the final minute Tuesday night, but Joliet West held on for a 61-58 victory in the opening round of the IHSA Class 4A Plainfield South Regional.

The Tigers, who were seeded 16th in the Joliet Central Sectional while South was 17th, are rewarded with a berth in tonight’s regional semifinal against top seed Neuqua Valley.

“We’ve got a tough match next, but at this time of year, all you want to do is win and give yourself a chance to play the next one,” West coach Kevin Michaels said.

His Tigers (8-19) had two players who were ill and three who were ineligible. Two normal starters did not start.

Yet they were able to hold on against South, which they beat 56-53 way back in the season opener.

“Our lack of experience showed at the end,” Michaels said. “We’re a program that isn’t that used to winning. It was good experience for our girls to have the lead and have to hold on to it.”

the late rally. The Cougars, who won six games this season, were down 59-47 with 1:23 left but went on a 9-0 run to make it very interesting.

Jaianna Brooks, a freshman guard, also had a big hand in South’s comeback.

She finished with 12 points.

Sophomore center Alyssa Fink scored 13.

West led much of the first half and was up 29-24 at half.

South scored the first seven points of the third quarter to grab a 31-29 lead.

The Tigers were back on top 40-37 after three quarters and with Chandler leading the way, they surged into a more comfortable lead early in the fourth quarter.

But it wasn’t over yet, not until Foster buried two free throws with 0:13 left, because the Cougars refused to quit. This, after all, is March Madness.

OAK LAWN – There may be better ways to open the postseason than how the Lincoln-Way Central girls basketball team did Monday night, but not many.

The Knights (14-12) clinched a winning record and connected on 19 three-pointers in a 92-20 runaway win over Chicago Washington at the Class 4A Oak Lawn Regional.

Taylor Green outscored Washington by herself with 24 points with eight 3-point baskets.

In Tuesday night’s rematch, the Cougars made it look a bit easier. South remained unbeaten at home in the SPC and stayed in the thick of the conference race with a 58-48 victory.

“We weren’t ready to play, and that’s all on me,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said.

“As a coach, my responsibility is to have the kids ready.

“All the credit goes to coach (Tim) Boe and South.

They were ready to play a big conference game and we were not.”

South (12-12, 8-4) and Minooka (14-13, 7-5) were tied with Plainfield North, a game behind Plainfield East, when the night began. The Cougars were coming off a huge win last Friday night over East and backed it up with another sterling effort.

“To go unbeaten at home in the conference is a good feeling,” Boe said. “It’s feels even better to beat a team as good as Minooka. They scrap and they are a well-prepared team.”

But on this occasion, the story was different.

The Cougars led 18-5 after one quarter. Minooka’s Neal Tyrell hit three consecutive 3-pointers in the second quarter to close the gap to 2621 at halftime. However, the Indians were limited to four third-quarter points and fell

behind 40-25, and South coasted home.

Sophomore Jacob Buchner came off the Cougars’ bench and scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 3-pointers. Center Miles Snowden scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and was his usual menacing self under the basket.

“To sweep Minooka and stay up there in conference really feels good,” Buchner said. “This was one of my bet-

ter offensive games. This is the way I think I usually play, although being a sophomore, I haven’t always lived up to my potential.”

“Jacob had 19 points his very first varsity game,” Boe noted. “The guys did a good job getting him involved and playing unselfish basketball.

You do that and play defense and you’re going to give yourself a chance.”

Boe said the 6-6 Snowden “is capable of being a game

changer. He has the softest hands, and on the defensive end, he is capable of changing shots.”

He did that often enough to help limit Minooka, which committed 19 turnovers, to 35.6 percent shooting and help keep South in the SPC race.

Tyrell led all scorers with 18 points, including five 3-pointers. Adam Alexander chipped in 12 for Minooka. Shane Ritter had 11 for South.

Sorry, but no. What we have here is a sport desperate for attention. And, really, it’s all silliness.

Jones’ fame and involvement will make no difference long term for U.S. bobsledding. It’s – and this can’t be overstated – bobsledding.

Herschel Walker, Edwin Moses and Willie Gault all took part in the sport, and where is it today?

With two bobsled tracks in the entire United States.

There’s no doubt Eberling got shafted. It’s her bad fortune to be part of a sport that would sell its soul for track’s version of a Kardashian. On the other hand, what people are we talking about at the Winter Games? The U.S. men’s hockey team. Vladimir Putin.

Pussy Riot. And Lolo Jones.

Somebody decided a while back that bobsledding was an Olympic sport, thus raising it to something much bigger than what it is, a race down a hill. A bobsledding gold medal is worth just as much as a basketball gold medal, but no one in his right mind would argue the accomplishments are equal.

Jones didn’t take up downhill skiing after her dreams of a medal were dashed in London two years ago. She took up bobsledding for the simple reason that she could learn it quickly, be a big fish in a small pond, possibly win an Olym-

pic medal and keep herself in the limelight. It was a shrewd, tactical decision by a very fast runner.

In the 2008 Olympics, she failed to get gold in the 100-meter hurdles after tripping on a hurdle. She had been the favorite. She finished fourth in London.

“You’re fighting for that Olympic dream,” Jones said of bobsledding. “You’re fighting for that gold medal. At the end of the day, that’s what I’ve always wanted, to be able to stand on that podium, and hear the national anthem.

It looks like she’s out in the cold again. On a rainy Tuesday night, she and Fenlator, in USA-3, were in 11th place after two runs.

There are two more runs Wednesday to decide the medals, but it looks like one is out of Jones’ reach again. Meyers’ sled is in first place.

“I’m happy where my teammates are at,’’ she said. “We’re here, Team USA, we’re a wolf pack and we’re definitely willing to support in all aspects.’’

Eberling certainly was. She came here as an alternate in case of injury to another sledder.

Would she have done better than Jones? Nobody knows. Judging by the tiny crowd at the Sanki Sliding Center, nobody much cares about any of it, including the sport.

Eberling was disappointed with the federation’s decision last month, calling it “not right.’’

It wasn’t. But it seems so predictable in hindsight.

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia – What kind of sport is it in which a newcomer can show up, train for seven months, compete in five international races total and make the U.S. Olympic team?

Not much of one.

Or, as they prefer to call it here, “bobsledding.’’

I’m not referring to Lolo Jones, the renowned attention magnet who has been competing in the sport for all of 16 months. The bobsledding neophyte here is Lauryn Williams, a superb track sprinter who won a gold medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics as part of the American 4x100-meter relay team. She also happens to be the brakeman for the U.S.’s No. 1 sled, which was piloted Tuesday night

by Elana Meyers. All that in seven months.

That’s not to minimize the courage it takes to go down a mountain at 80-plus mph or the dedication it takes to train for the event. But it’s very hard to get indignant about Jones’ controversial inclusion on the U.S. team when the pool of people who participate in the sport can be wiped away with a squeegee. The U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation has about 400 members.

In November 2012, Jones and pilot Jazmine Fenlator won silver in a World Cup race in Lake Placid, N.Y. How long had Jones been involved in the sport? Five weeks.

Last month, U.S. bobsled officials chose Jones, a two-time Olympic hurdler, over Palos Hills’ Katie Eberling and two other brakemen, even though Eberling had won a silver medal in the world championships last year.

he lighthearted spirit surrounding the Christian Seder, the feast heralding the beginning of Passover, at St. Edward and Christ Episcopal Church in Joliet last Wednesday evening surprised Robin Krynicki of Joliet.

Krynicki had attended a similar event 20 years ago at a local Catholic church and she recalled a more somber atmosphere, although she had immensely enjoyed learning how the Eucharist and the Jewish Passover were connected. She asked her husband Jack Krynicki to accompany her to this Seder, which he did, she said.

“There was a little more fun, a lot more socialization and we had more wine. Fr. Bob [Colaresi] is a funny guy,” Krynicki said. “The thing he tried to get across was that the Passover was a family meal, just like we would have a big Christmas dinner with our families.”

Colaresi, director of the Carmelite Retreat Center in Darien and former principal at the former all-boys Catholic High School (now the co-ed Joliet Catholic Academy) is also the spiritual director of Rev. Richard Lundgren, associate rector at St. Edward Christ Episcopal Church, who invited Colaresi to present the Seder.

In the late 1980s during one of his trips to the Holy Land, Colaresi first saw the Christianized Seder and wanted to recreate it for others. He compiled information and consulted with several rabbis for accuracy. Present at last Wednesday’s Seder was a Jewish woman, Colaresi said, and she praised the event’s accuracy.

“She had never seen it done outside her home,” Colaresi said.

1999. With each subsequent one, Lundgren’s appreciation and understanding of the Jewish heritage grew and he wished to share it with others.

So he invited Colaresi to St. Edward and Christ Episcopal Church. Thirty-three people participated in the closed event, ranging in age from 13 to 91, he said. Lundgren selected the recipes from a Jewish cookbook and asked several people from the church to help prepare it. All items were kosher, he said.

“One item we did not have was a shank bone on each plate,” Lundgren said. “That wasn’t practical for us to do.”

Because the Passover in intended to be somewhat catechetical, traditionally, the youngest child present periodically asks, “Why is this night special?” And the leader replies with a different answer each time, Lundgren said.

“Our junior high school

boy asked the questions,” Lundgren said. “He [Colaresi] had a nice booklet prepared for us, interspersed with Christian connections that he walked us through.”

During the Seder, Colaresi refuted some long-held Christian traditions and clarified others. For instance, Jesus, as the host, probably sat at the end of the u-shaped table – with John at his side – and not in the center, as depicted in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous “Last Supper” painting. However, Colaresi did sit in the middle to make himself more visible, as he was doing the presenting, Lundgren said.

It’s possible that Peter sat at the opposite end as that would explain his objection to Jesus washing his feet, Lundgren said. Perhaps Peter had impulsively left the room to complete an errand, leaving no available place except at the end. It was that person’s job, Lundgren, to wash the guests’ feet, if the

servants neglected that duty.

“Peter didn’t do it, so Jesus got up,” Lundgren said.

Lundgren purposively served no dessert because Colaresi eliminated the fourth cup of wine, just as Jesus had. During the course of the Passover, Jesus drank from three of them – blessing, memory, redemption – but not the last, completion, Lundgren said.

That’s because, Lundgren said, Jesus interrupted the meal by saying, “Let’s go,” and leading the disciples to the Garden of Gethsemanes (the Seder party processed down the hallway into the church). There Jesus prayed three times (for the three cups) and found the apostles asleep after each interval.

Not until Jesus drinks the hyssop mixed with wine before his death is the fourth cup – completion – drunk, Lundgren said. Colaresi ended the Seder by anointing everyone with myrrh from the Holy Land and exhorting

• Cushions are traditional for seating; however, the Rev. Richard Lundgren used chairs. He reserved an empty space for Elijah, who was to return to announce the coming of the Messiah. Lundgren set a wine glass at “Elijah’s” place.

• A brass, 7-candle menorah was placed in the center of the table with a prayer shawl wrapped around it.

• The men wore yarmulkes.

• In addition to lamb stew and beef stew (the optional entrée for people that disliked lamb), Lundgren served several representational food items. These included: • Arugula or horseradish: bitterness • Salt water: tears. Dip the arugula in the salt water and eat it.

• Applesauce mixed with nuts and cinnamon: mortar • Roasted or hardboiled egg: adversity making one stronger.

Cracking the egg recalls the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. For the Christian, the egg symbolizes rebirth in Jesus Christ.

• Baskets of pita bread: reminiscent of the unleavened bread because the Israelites did not have time for bread to rise.

“People were visibly moved,” Lundgren said.

Like Krynicki, Sue Percifield of Joliet, one of the cooks, was surprised at the general upbeat mood of the Seder, considering the solemn remembrance of the sparing of the Israelites’ firstborn children from death, before their exodus from Egypt.

“There was a lot of joy involved,” Percifield said.

At the bridge table, we create deals, either by hand or with a computer program, and then enjoy trying to solve them.

Most can be handled correctly if our analysis is accurate. But occasionally a layout will arise that requires doing something so abnormal that it is easy to overlook.

Cover the West and South hands. West leads the heart eight against four spades. After East takes dummy’s 10 with his queen, what should he do next?

If West had opened one heart, North would have overcalled one no-trump. But in the balancing position (a pass by North would have ended the auction), one notrump would have shown only 11-15 points. Then, after South advanced with one spade, indicating 0-8 points, North’s raise to two spades promised 17-19 points.

East has three defensive tricks: his aces and the heart queen. If the heart king will automatically score later, East can cash those aces and exit with a diamond. Here, though, that does not work.

East should realize that West has led a singleton or high from a doubleton. (West would have led low from a tripleton because he had not supported hearts.) Then, if East makes the weird-looking lead of a heart at trick two, he will defeat the contract. Here, South wins in the dummy and plays a trump, but East takes the trick, cashes the diamond ace, and gives West a heart ruff for down one.

Dear Abby: My husband and I relocated to Florida a little over a year ago and were quickly welcomed into our new neighbors’ social whirl. Two couples in the neighborhood are gay – one male, one female. While they are nice enough, my husband and I did not include them when it was our turn to host because we do not approve of their lifestyle choices.

Since then, we have been excluded from neighborhood gatherings, and someone even suggested that we are bigots!

Abby, we moved here from a conservative community where people were pretty much the same. If people were “different,” they apparently kept it to themselves. While I understand the phrase “when in Rome,” I don’t feel we should have to compromise our values just to win the approval of our neighbors. But really, who is the true bigot here?

Would you like to weigh in? – Unhappy In Tampa Dear Unhappy: I sure would. The first thing I’d like to say is that regardless of what you were told in your previous community, a

Phillips person’s sexual orientation isn’t a “lifestyle choice.” Gay people don’t choose to be gay; they are born that way. They can’t change being gay any more than you can change being heterosexual.

I find it interesting that you are unwilling to reciprocate the hospitality of people who welcomed you and opened their homes to you, and yet you complain because you are receiving similar treatment.

From where I sit, you may have chosen the wrong place to live because it appears you would be happier in a less integrated neighborhood surrounded by people who think the way you do. But if you interact only with people like yourselves, you will have missed a chance for growth, which is what you have been offered here. Please don’t blow it.

accident when I was 8. A man who attends my church took me under his wing and has been like a father to me ever since. He is very supportive most of the time.

Progress in human genetics will lead to better diagnosis Dear Doctor K: In yesterday’s column, a reader asked whether she should be tested for genes linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Today, I thought I’d give you my view on the larger question: Will studies of our genes change the practice of medicine and improve our lives?

My answer: During my career, progress in human genetics has been greater than virtually anyone imagined. However, human genetics also has turned out to be much more complicated than people imagined. As a result, we have not moved as rapidly as we had hoped in changing medical practice.

I graduated from medical school in the late 1960s. We knew what human genes were made of – DNA – and we were beginning to understand how genes work. We had even identified a handful of genes that were linked to specific diseases. We assumed that disease resulted from an abnormality in the structure of a gene.

If I had asked any biologist on the day I graduated, “Will we ever know how many genes we have, and the exact structure of each gene?” I’ll bet the answer would have been: “Not in my lifetime, or my children’s lifetime.”

They would have been wrong.

Indeed, some diseases are caused by an abnormality in the structure of genes. In fact, sometimes it is very simple: one particular change at one particular spot in just one particular gene leads to a specific disease. Sickle cell anemia is an example.

Unfortunately, with most diseases it’s far from that simple.

The first complexity: Most diseases are influenced by the structure of multiple genes, not just one.

Examples are diabetes and high blood pressure.

The second complexity: Many diseases are explained not by an abnormal gene structure, but by whether genes are properly turned on or off. Most cancers fall into this category.

What do I mean by that? Every cell in our body has the same set of genes. Yet, a cell in our eye that sees light is different from a cell in our stomach that makes acid.

Why? Because different genes are turned on in each type of cell.

Similarly, if a gene with a normal structure is not properly

turned on or off, a cell can malfunction – it can become diseased.

Whether a gene is turned on properly is proving to be a more important cause of disease than we once imagined.

The third complexity: We have 10 times as many bacterial cells living on and inside our body as there are cells in our body. And the genes of those bacterial cells – not just the genes in our own cells – affect our health, perhaps profoundly. Bacterial genes may play an important role in obesity, heart disease, even autism spectrum disorders.

So, am I discouraged about whether progress in human genetics will improve our lives? To the contrary, I’m more convinced than ever that it will. We are already seeing earlier and more accurate diagnosis and prognosis and improved treatments.

And just as 40 years ago very few would have imagined what has been achieved by 2014, very few today can imagine what will be achieved in the next 40 years.

Dr. Wallace: I’m in the 10th grade, and I get excellent grades. I’m not quite sure what I want to do when it comes time to earn a living, but I do know that I will be a graduate of a good college or university.

Last week I met with my school counselor, and she said I should get involved in extracurricular activities because “elite” colleges and universities prefer students who have been involved with after-school events.

I wouldn’t mind having a bunch of after-school activities added to my transcript, but I’m not good at sports (I hate them) and the only musical instrument I play is the piano and piano players are eliminated from the marching band.

Shouldn’t colleges and universities be more interested in a student who possesses a 4.0 grade point average than one with a 3.5 grade point average who hits a ball with a bat? I was born in Korea, and the system there places all emphasis on academics, not playing games. – Kim, San Diego, Calif.

Dear Kim: Colleges and universities enjoy having brilliant students come to their campuses, and they all place outstanding academic achievement as the prime requirement for acceptance. I’m sure you will have little difficulty entering the school of your choice if you continue your superb academic record. Still, some schools do look at a student’s extracurricular participation as well as grades, looking for individuals who are well-rounded.

There are many more extracurricular activities than marching band and athletics. Why not check out a club or group that sounds like it would be fun (as well

Or you could run for a class or student body office, try out for the school play or start a piano-appreciation club. You could also tutor less-gifted students, assist the librarian or volunteer to read stories to elementary students, or become a part of the all-school choir.

These are but a few extracurricular activities many high schools offer their students.

There are many, many more to choose from. It’s up to you to take advantage of them.

Dr. Wallace: I don’t smoke tobacco cigarettes, and I am 100 percent positive I never will. But my boyfriend and I share two marijuana cigarettes a week.

Yes, we inhale, and even though I enjoy the effect of marijuana, I am concerned about the possibility of getting lung cancer from my enjoyable habit. Is this a real danger? Dear Lisa: Marijuana has been widely used on a regular basis for about the past 45 years, and only time will tell what sort of negative effects it has on the body. Two marijuana cigarettes a week may not cause major health problems, but the odds of your contracting heart and lung diseases would be lower if your lungs were completely smoke-free.

‘If You Build It’: Exhilarating documentary on high school students who discover their inner-architects

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Can a chicken coop make you cry?

The answer is a definite yes in “If You Build It,” a bracing, quietly exhilarating documentary about a group of high school students who discover their inner architects over the course of an academic year. Under the tutelage of an idealistic couple of committed design-builders, these teenagers - whose tiny hometown of Windsor, N.C., is quickly succumbing to brain drain and rural blight - start small and end big, stopping along the way to come up with whimsical, colorful and utterly gobsmacking ways to house a common farm fowl.

The coops are just some of the more delightful elements of “If You Build It,” which chronicles the sojourn of Matt Miller and Emily Pilloton, a pair of

young designer-activists who arrive in Bertie County in order redefine vocational education and turn it into a vibrant, hands-on workshop where kids learn the rudiments of critical thinking, technical skills and community engagement.

Buckminster Fuller is invoked in “If You Build It,” but the individual who hovers over it like a benevolent spirit is Samuel Mockbee, whose radical humanism and grass-roots construction methods seem to inform every joist and beam.

Filmmaker Patrick Creadon (“Wordplay,” “I.O.U.S.A.”) gracefully threads viewers through a story that commences with bright-eyed optimism, then inevitably runs afoul of entrenched local bureaucracies. (One of the film’s subtle themes has to do with the political work that’s just as crucial to the design process as the marriage of form and function.)

But even when the students learn heartbreaking lessons about administrative short-sightedness and bad faith, it’s impossible to leave “If You Build It” feeling depressed, largely because of the young people themselves. The film’s appealing cast of real-life players includes a sensitive farmer’s son named Stevie, a gifted football player named Erick and a loner named Kerron, all of whom evince genuine imaginative and observational talents.

Like last year’s “Nebraska” and “Medora,” Creadon’s “If You Build It” lifts an otherwise forgotten community, existing in a ghostly netherworld between past and present; if these gentle, sweet-natured young people are any indication, Windsor, at least, has a future. And, seriously, you’re not going to believe those chicken coops. Tear-jerkers, each and every one of them.
