Aux Sable Creek aqueduct Aux Sable Township, one of Grundy County’s most scenic areas, includes gentle rolling prairies that at one time were fringed by timber along Aux Sable Creek.

On the east, there is a natural watershed that allows Aux Sable Creek to drain westerly direction into the Illinois River. In the early 19th century, Aux Sable was a natural barrier to the construction of the I&M Canal. Because the creek was a natural watershed, the canal engineers had to construct an aqueduct over the creek.

The Aux Sable aqueduct is one of four aqueducts built along the canal as a solution to transporting canal boats over other bodies of water.

Constructed in 1847, the first aqueduct at Aux Sable Creek was built as part of the original I&M Canal construction project. This wooden aqueduct was replaced in 1927-28 by a steel structure.

In 1948, the abutments and piers were strengthened, and in 1970, the towpath bridge was rebuilt.

The aqueduct spans 136feet across Aux Sable Creek and is 18-feet wide. The steel aqueduct was again stabilized as part of infrastructure improvements done along the canal in the late 1990s.

The then image shows a photograph of Aux Sable Creek looking south. The arched bridge in the foreground was built in 1871, and the Aux Sable aqueduct can be seen in the distance. The now picture shows a similar view of the creek, old bridge and aqueduct today.

Touch from her true love revives Lockport woman dunland@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Just weeks before Melvin and Germaine Bost’s 69th wedding anniversary, it appeared the time had come to say goodbye.

But instead of farewells, the power of love is keeping them together, and they celebrate that anniversary today.

On Jan. 9, Germaine, 92, had a heart attack, fell and was rushed unconscious to the hospital. At the hospital, the family made it clear they didn’t want any extraordinary measures to keep Germaine – a faith-filled woman who attended daily Mass until she had a stroke three years ago – alive.

“My mother has ‘bone on bone’ in every joint,” said the Bosts’ daughter, Barb Steffes of Lockport. “For weeks, she had been asking everyone to pray for a peaceful death.”

It certainly appeared that might happen soon. Germaine’s blood pressure and heart rate plummeted. Her pulse was only 30 beats a minute.

“The nurse told us that the oxygen mask was keeping her alive,” Steffes said. “If we removed it, she would pass.”

So Melvin took Germaine’s hand and began speaking to her. Instantly, Germaine opened her eyes and stared at Melvin. Her blood pressure and

heart rate rose and continued rising.

“When the nurse came in, she did a double-take,” Steffes said. “She had to make sure it was the same patient.”

That night, Germaine was moved to a room with comfort care. The next day, she was feeding herself a soft diet and talking to family. Miraculously, Germaine did not break any bones, and has no damage to her heart or brain.

Germaine returned home Jan. 16. Steffes doubts her mother will be well enough to walk again, but Germaine talks to everyone, reads the newspaper, feeds herself, gives instructions to her caregivers and keeps track of the medication she takes.

Cory Wolf, Germaine’s nurse through Joliet Area Community Hospice, said she rarely hears firsthand stories of true love’s touch breaking the spell of death. Just talking about the experience makes her cry.

“It’s like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty,” Wolf said through her tears. “There’s no medical explanation for it.”

Melvin and Germaine met in 1941 when both worked for an insurance company in Chicago. Their first date was in August to celebrate both their birthdays; Melvin’s is Aug. 18, Germaine’s is Aug. 31. They went to Riverview, a former

Melvin had a different reason.

“She was kind of cute,” Melvin said.

One of their treasured photos is a black and white snapshot taken the night before the bombing of Pearl Harbor at a girls club where Germaine and Melvin liked to play pinochle, a game both still play.

Lockport might ask employees to help pay for insurance

By SARWAT S. AHMAD Shaw Media correspondent LOCKPORT – The city of Lockport’s employees may have to start pitching in to pay for their health insurance premiums.

The City Council is scheduled to vote at its next meeting on changes in its personnel policy, which will include language on how the city might develop a plan to include employee contributions to health insurance costs.

The city pays its employees’ insurance premiums, while employees pay their deductibles and co-pays, City Administrator Benjamin Benson said.

The city is set to enter into collective bargaining negotiations with its public works employees’ and police officers’ unions in the spring, he said.

Other notable proposed changes include how vacation time will be dispensed and rolled over, increased sick leave caps and the eventual elimination of longevity awards and education incentives.

The revised policy was presented to the City Council at its last regular meeting.

The personnel policy was last amended in 2007 and needed review because of changes in the city’s administration, technology and common practices, Benson said.

Some new changes are being made in order to “identify and implement cost-saving measures,” Benson told the council last week.

“Health care costs continue to skyrocket for municipalities,” Benson said in a later interview. “Employees are entitled to health care coverage, but the matter of what cost and type of coverage is up for debate.”

The city is considering different options, such as either a flat-rate or percentage-based fee, or a tier-based program offering different levels of coverage at respectively higher costs, he said.

Proposed changes to the city’s vacation policy come

from past issues, with many employees taking their vacations together around the holiday season, Benson said.

This made staffing difficult and costly because the city ended up paying more overtime.

Employees get their vacation as a block sum on Jan. 1, expiring on Dec.31. With the proposed changes, employees would earn their vacations monthly – at different rates depending on their years of service – and could rollover one week to the following year.

Employees still would get the same amount of vacation time, but it would be staggered throughout the year, because employee start dates would mark their employment anniversary, instead of Jan. 1.

Also included in the changes is a provision that will increase accrued sick leave that

could be rolled over to the next year, from 180 days to 240 days.

The revised policy also will set July 1, 2015, as the date after which newly hired employees will not be offered longevity awards or education incentives.

The city gives its employ-

ees awards ranging from a $40 monthly salary increase after five years to a $120 monthly increase after 25 years of service.

According to Benson, these awards did not seem to significantly influence whether an employee stayed with the city.

“This seemed like a duplication of compensation since employees typically get annual reviews and increase in pay,” Benson said. “That’s additional money that can go toward operations.”

education for its employees by offering one-time cash awards after the completion of credit hours toward associate or bachelor’s degrees, ranging from $250 hours for 16 hours of coursework to $1,200 for completion of a bachelor’s degree.

While these incentives will remain for current employees, those hired after July 1, 2015, will not have access to them.

However, there is a proposed increase on tuition reimbursement caps, from $1,200 to $2,500.

“Lower back pain is the fifth most common reason patients visit the doctor. Pain results from nerves being irritated,” explains Dr. Frank Ostir, Ostir Physical Medicine in Joliet.

Done fully clothed, each treatment lasts 45-minutes.

The program requires about 25 sessions done throughout four to six weeks. Does it work?

“Most patients experience pain relief within 10 days of treatment.

The program makes a physiological difference by initiating changes at the muscle and vertebral level, not just temporary relief,” Ostir says. “At a minimum, we expect patients to be at least 30-50% improved after the tenth visit. Clinical results indicate that 80% or more of persons with low back pain could get relief through the program,” which costs about $199, and may be covered by insurance.

Will County Forest Preserve district offers night of romance for area couples

By CHRISTINE JOHNSON Shaw Media correspondent MONEE – Bright stars lit the clear night sky. The temperature was 8 degrees.

Love was in the arctic air.

On Saturday night, nine couples celebrated Valentine’s Day at Monee Reservoir during the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s annual Snowshoe Under the Stars: Sweetheart Style.

The night of romance began with some snowshoe history followed by couples strapping on snowshoes and hiking the snow-covered nature trails under the stars. After getting their blood pumping, couples cuddled by a warm fire with a selection of cheese, fruit and wine.

Later in the evening, couples played Valentine’s Day-inspired games for prizes, including a wine tasting and tour for 10 people at the Lynfred Winery, a 60-minute couple’s massage from Sage Bodywork in Joliet and a “Love Basket” complete with a blanket, movie, chocolate, candles and red velvet pancake mix.

Al and Gale Ahrens of Plainfield have been married for 40 years. This is the third year they have celebrated Valentine’s Day on snowshoes, under the stars. It began as a surprise.

After staying home and watching their daughters receive flowers for years, Al wanted to do something different for his wife.

“Al signed us up. He never signs up for anything,” Gale Ahrens said.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Al Ahrens added.

LEMONT – The village of Lemont’s Historic Preservation Commission unanimously voted Thursday to deny a petition by the Archdiocese of Chicago to demolish the former St. Patrick School on Illinois Street.

Archdiocese facilities director Kevin O’Malley said the archdiocese will appeal the decision to the Lemont Village Board.

The archdiocese has said the 1880s building has deteriorated to the point that it is unusable and repairs would be too costly.

The building was closed 12 years ago after it was determined to be unsafe. The archdiocese estimates it would cost $1.25 million just to make the building safe.

However, because the building is in a historic district, the archdiocese needs approval from the village to tear it down.

Proponents of saving the building, many of whom attended the meeting, say it is historically significant as one of the buildings constructed with limestone from the Lemont quarries and as the first school in Lemont to offer secondary education.

“My mom and I creamed them,” Barb said.

Melvin and Germaine raised five children in a one-bathroom house that was so small, Barb Steffes said, her father joked about having to stand on the bed to put on his pants. But the couple was rich in respect and appreciation for each other.

“My father always thanked my mother for making dinner,” she said.

Except for the one year they went to Hawaii, Melvin and Germaine always celebrated wedding anniversaries with dinner dates. Germaine ordered steak; Melvin, lamb chops. This year, their family will have dinner catered at the house and neither Germaine nor Melvin is picky about the menu.

“Just something easy,” Germaine said.

Germaine feels couples

should try harder to make relationships work and she stressed the importance of celebration. Melvin hopes everyone can find the happiness he and Germaine have known.

However, he downplays the fact that may have saved her life, although he surely is thankful she’s still here. He doesn’t want to think about life without her.

“I’d be lonely,” Melvin said and then added with a grin, “At 97, it’s hard to find somebody else.”

Random Acts of Kindness abound in Channahon schools Feb. 9 through 15 was Random Acts of Kindness Week, according the RAK Foundation. The foundation challenged every American “to do something truly amazing.”

They encouraged everyone to do at least one random act of kindness every day during the week.

I made a few phone calls and sent out a few emails to Channahon schools to find out if they were doing anything for this designated week of kindness.

I found out that while many people aren’t even aware a specific week exists, schools routinely do all sorts of things that fit into this category.

At Three Rivers School in Channahon, students participate in the No One Sits Alone initiative. On certain days, called mix-it-up day, students are randomly assigned a different seating spot in the lunchroom. There are ice breakers at each table – things students might ask each other to promote conversation – and music in the background to make things a little easier.

School social worker Kendra Hills said the school always keeps an eye out for students who might feel they don’t belong and work with them to be more social.

Mix-it-up day takes it a step further.

“We create awareness so

Channahon Junior High Principal Chad Uphoff said the school has a year-round Good News Note program which recognizes students who perform random acts of kindness. So far teachers have submitted the names of 20 students caught in the act of doing something nice.

Principal Angela Stallion at Galloway School said students and staff focused on kindness the entire previous week. Kindergartners drew hearts, which are displayed throughout the building, as a way of showing kindness.

Second-graders made up recipes on how to be a good friend while first-graders were given a kindness challenge to record each time they completed an act of kindness for someone.

All students at Galloway participated in the practice of giving compliments to each other.

someone an anonymous compliment; talk to someone new at your office or at school and extend a few kind words (take a tip from students at Three Rivers School); let the person behind you in line check out first; park farther away and let someone else get the good spot; smile at a stranger, you never know what kind of day someone is

having.

“It doesn’t really matter what you do,” Capetta wrote, “… The simplest acts of kindness can make such a big difference.”

Butler said Dennis began a scholarship for black men and would often invite guest speakers who had achieved corporate success to inspire students. In many ways, Dennis’ dedication to her students went beyond the official program.

“If a student needed books, she bought books. If a student needed to communicate with an instructor and didn’t know how to do it, that was Jewell’s job,” Butler said. “If a student needed advocacy, Jewell advocated on that person’s behalf. Some students struggle in speaking up for themselves.

Jewell was that voice for a lot of students.”

Duke said she and her two daughters often visited Dennis in the days before her Dec. 7 death at age 61. That’s because Duke said she wanted her daughters to know the woman that helped her earn several associate degrees – in the arts, in applied science and in general studies.

Edwards-Branch wants everyone she meets to know Dennis through her.

“I just want to carry that legacy she lived for me,” Edwards-Branch said, “and to pass that onto my own children and the other people I come in contact with.”

JOLIET – When Treana Duke first attended classes at Joliet Junior College, she was 20 years old and had a 2-monthold daughter.

Duke, now 28 and the mother of two, said she was able to attend classes because Jewell Dennis, the director for JJC’s Project Achieve for 24 years, was like a grandmother to her.

Project Achieve is a federally funded program to help low-income, first-generation and disabled students with tutoring and any assistance they need to complete their degree.

For Dennis, that assistance came in many forms. In Duke’s case, Dennis even provided baby-sitting.

“She’d be doing her work and she’d had the baby sitting across her lap,” Duke said.

DeAndre Butler, the current Project Achieve director, said Dennis made opportunities happen – for her students and even for Butler, whom Dennis hired as an academic support specialist in 2008.

“She was the one who believed in me,” Butler said. “I was young – 24 – but she gave me a chance. She was phenomenal to me, the students and to people in general. She was one of those people who would definitely take the shirt off her back to help someone.”

Crystal Edwards-Branch, now of Alabama, said she was just 18 and sitting on the bridge at JJC getting ready for a class when Dennis rounded the corner and said, “Hey, you!

Dennis knew some of Edwards-Branch’s friends because they were part of Project Achieve. Somehow, Dennis realized Edwards-Branch, the first person in her family to attend Jewell college, could Dennis benefit from the program. So Dennis signed her up.

Because of Dennis, Edwards-Branch eventually transferred to Northern University – Dennis’ alma mater, Edwards-Branch said – and graduated with a degree in family individual development.

Edwards-Branch is working on her master’s degree in project management and is the program coordinator for the graduate school of admissions at the University of Alabama.

She said Dennis could be hard on her students, but it was only because Dennis wanted her students to succeed.

“She told me to always carry myself as a professional lady,” Edwards-Branch said, “and that every situation was a learning experience and a teachable moment.”

Phillip Dennis of Hazel Crest, Dennis’ brother, said his sister always assisted and encouraged him in his studies.

When she was in high school, Dennis always was helping someone in math, he added.

“When I was in college, she’d write to me and tell me to keep my head up, that

Her greatest joy was being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at any time. Mary was a resident of The Timbers, Shorewood, IL. where she formed many friendships.

Louis Jourdan, Frenchman who starred in ‘Gigi,’ dies at 93

By DAISY NGUYEN The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Louis Jourdan, the dashingly handsome Frenchman who starred in “Gigi,” “Can-Can,” “Three Coins in the Fountain” and other American movies, has died.

He was 93.

Jourdan’s biographer, Olivier Minne, said the actor died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills, likely of natural causes.

“He was the last French actor from the Hollywoood golden era,” said Minne, who is working on a book and documentary about Jourdan. “Louis was very proud of his career in America.”

Succeeding Charles Boyer as Hollywood’s favorite French lover, Jourdan romanced Joan Fontaine, Jennifer Jones, Grace Kelly and Shirley MacLaine in films during the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s.

He also showed that he could play a villain in “Julie” (1956), in which he was Doris Day’s husband, a psychopathic killer.

Through most of his 15-year

career as a leading man, he was subject to the Hollywood habit of typecasting.

“Any actor who comes here with an accent is automatically put in roles as a lover,” he complained. “I didn’t want to be perpetually cooing in a lady’s ear.”

When Jourdan was brought to Hollywood by David O. Selznick in 1947, the producer instructed him to “learn good American English the way it is spoken by John Barrymore and Fredric March.” The actor studied hard, but he concluded: “If I had come here as a boy, I could speak unaccented English; at 24, it is impossible.”

Jourdan’s film career reached a peak in 1957 with the Alan Jay Lerner-Frederick Loewe musical, “Gigi,” which won nine Academy Awards, including best picture. At first, Jourdan protested that he couldn’t sing and wasn’t right for the role as the Parisian seeking young Gigi (Leslie Caron) as a mistress.

Lerner and Loewe persisted, and they gave him the title song, which required little vo-

calizing. Jourdan didn’t consider “Gigi” his best achievement.

He said in 1957: “It was a wonderful story for Leslie and Maurice Chevalier, but I played a colorless leading man. You’ll note that none of the actors was nominated for Academy Awards.”

Louis Gendre was born June 19, 1921, in Marseilles, France; when he became an actor he changed to Pierre Jourdan, then Louis Jourdan. His father owned a seaside hotel in Cannes, where he met artists, actors and directors who encouraged him to study drama in Paris.

His striking good looks helped get him acting jobs, including his first movie, “Le Corsaire,” with Charles Boyer in 1938. During the German occupation of France, he was forced into a labor gang, cutting wood and digging ditches.

Assigned to make propaganda films for the Nazis, he escaped and joined the French underground.

After the war, Jourdan resumed his movie career in France.

Rauner grapples with this year, next year’s budget problems

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner will lay out his plan Wednesday to confront an unprecedented fiscal crisis exacerbated by the recent expiration of the state’s temporary income tax increase, a multibillion-dollar revenue loss that could foreshadow big spending cuts and test his campaign pledge to not raise taxes.

By law, Rauner must develop a budget based on currently available funds. But the loss of the additional income tax revenue last month leaves a gaping hole for the remainder of this fiscal year and next year.

Rauner, who has pledged to manage the state’s budget crisis without raising taxes, has asked lawmakers for broad powers to move money around within the current budget and is negotiating with legislative leaders.

In addition to Rauner’s campaign pledge to increase funding for early childhood and K-12 education, he hinted that higher education may see some cuts.

He told a crowd at the University of Illinois last month that he wants school administrators to better manage finances and reduce costs.

Rauner also wants to freeze property taxes for two years, and Friday issued an executive order creating a task force aimed at eliminating or consolidating some of Illinois’ more than 7,000 units of government.

Dozens of vehicles crash on slippery Chicago expressway

CHICAGO – Illinois State Police said more than 30 vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction crash Sunday amid slippery conditions on the Kennedy Expressway near the downtown Ohio exit.

A series of vehicles slammed into each other after the initial accident occurred after 10 a.m.

Police said about a dozen people were hospitalized for injuries but that none appeared to be life-threatening.

Firefighters temporarily closed inbound traffic as they cleared the accident scene.

A light snow began to fall in Chicago earlier Sunday.

Weather officials reported low visibility and icy conditions in some area.

Police seize 23 pounds of marijuana during traffic stop

CHICAGO – Police said they arrested a 39-year-old Chicago man after finding 23 pounds of marijuana in his SUV during a traffic stop Friday.

Chicago police said Saturday that Alexander Brown was charged with one felony count of cannabis possession.

Police said patrol officers who pulled over Brown for a minor traffic violation saw a large clear plastic bag containing cannabis sticking out of a black book bag in the vehicle’s back seat. Another bag of marijuana was recovered from the SUV during a search, police said. Police estimated the street value of the drug at $64,000.

Brown also was issued a traffic citation.

Chicago tries police body cameras in pilot program

CHICAGO – Some Chicago police officers are testing body cameras as part of a 90-day pilot program that began last month.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the program is “off to a great start” and has the potential to help the public understand how police officers work. About 30 officers in one patrol district are using them.

Body cameras have been promoted as a tool to improve police community relations.

Demand has grown since the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in August by a police officer, and subsequent protests.

Police: Copenhagen gunman had criminal record, gang past

OLSEN and KARL RITTER The Associated Press COPENHAGEN, Denmark – The slain gunman suspected in the deadly Copenhagen attacks was a 22-year-old with a history of violence and may have been inspired by Islamic terrorists – and possibly the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris, Danish authorities said Sunday.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt mourned the two people killed and vowed to protect freedom of speech and Denmark’s Jewish community.

The suspect was killed in a gunbattle with a SWAT team early Sunday. He had opened fire Saturday at a cultural center hosting a seminar on free speech with an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad and then later at security forces outside a synagogue, police said.

A Danish filmmaker was killed in the first attack. Nine hours later, a security guard protecting a bat mitzvah near

a synagogue was slain. Five police officers were wounded in the shootings.

Jens Madsen, head of the Danish intelligence agency PET, said investigators believe the gunman “could have been inspired by the events in Paris.” Last month, Islamic militants carried out a massacre at the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo followed by an attack on Jews at a kosher grocery, killing 17 people.

“He could also have been inspired by material sent out by [the Islamic State group] and others,” Madsen said.

Copenhagen police made no mention of Islamic extremism and said the Danish-born suspect had a history of violence, weapons offenses and connections to a criminal gang. They didn’t release his name.

“Denmark has been hit by terror,” Thorning-Schmidt said. “We do not know the motive for the alleged perpetrator’s actions, but we know that there are forces that want to hurt Denmark. They want to rebuke our freedom of

speech.”

Chief Rabbi Jair Melchior identified the security guard as Dan Uzan, a 27-yearold member of Denmark’s 7,000-strong Jewish community. Two police officers who were near the synagogue were slightly wounded.

In the earlier shooting, 55-year-old filmmaker Finn Noergaard was killed while attending a panel discussion titled “Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression.”

One of the main speakers was Lars Vilks, a 68-year-old Swedish artist who has faced numerous death threats for depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a dog in 2007.

Vilks, who was whisked away unharmed by bodyguards, told The Associated Press he believed he was the intended target.

Agnieszka Kolek, another panelist, said she heard shouts of “God is great” in Arabic.

“Lars was being evacuated.

Everyone was trying to protect themselves and others,” she told AP.

Several compelling stories at 3A sectional

Oster won that match by a pin, but Ledbetter was able to reach state after upsetting Quincy’s Michael Peters in the 138 quarterfinals and then beating Plainfield South senior Andrew Bonner in the semifinals.

cherron@shawmedia.com While the eight area wrestlers who won sectional titles at the Class 3A Normal Community Sectional stole the headlines, 17 others from local schools also deserve their share of credit for qualifying for state from a tournament that featured many quality competitors.

And there are countless others who did their best but came up a bit short of their dream of reaching the finals in Champaign, including several who will not get that opportunity again.

Here are some of the more interesting tales of individuals who didn’t capture the top spot but still made a name for themselves with their sectional performances.

Anyone who knocks off the top-ranked guy at their weight deserves plenty of credit, and that’s just what Plainfield North’s Nick Wolf achieved.

The Tiger senior upset Lincoln-Way Central’s Bryan Ditchman, 4-3, in the 285-pound semifinals – but then Belleville West’s Ricky Nelson stole the thunder by recording a pin over Wolf in the title match.

Lincoln-Way East’s Brian Burns upset Belleville East’s Matt Striegel, a three-time qualifier, in the 170 quarterfinals and then nearly pulled off another upset against Minooka’s Carson Oughton, a threetime qualifier, before falling, 2-1, in the semifinals. The junior had to win another close match with Homewood-Flossmoor’s Alan Willis to earn his first state trip.

Plainfield Central senior Clayton Ledbetter upset Quincy’s Michael Peters in the 138 quarterfinals and then beat Plainfield South senior Andrew Bonner in the semifinals to become the first member of his family to reach state.

Meanwhile, Wildcat sophomore Jared Ellingwood hopes to follow in the footsteps of brothers Jeremy and Jordan, who also made their first state trips as sophomores and then finished third or better the next two years.

tles after failing to advance out of the regional a year ago. The only other area competitor who didn’t make it out of the regional in 2014 but is headed to state is Lockport senior Chris Murino. After falling in the 220 quarterfinals, Murino won three straight matches decided by two points or less, edging Lincoln-Way Central senior Sean Kelly to reach the third-place mat.

After falling to 195 champion Tyler Johnson of Lockport in the quarterfinals, Minooka senior Josh Bouie had to win three tough matches to earn his first state trip. He edged Plainfield East’s Zach Dixon, 5-4, and later nipped Joliet West’s Meekah Ben-Israel, 3-2.

Plainfield East senior Jake Mayon bounced back from a 2-0 semifinal loss to 182 champ Mason Delong of Bradley by quickly getting Pekin’s Alex Bleeker – the defending sectional champ – to his back and pinning him in 38 seconds to earn his initial trip to state.

Lincoln-Way Central senior Matt Crnich suffered a 9-7 semifinal defeat to Smiley but bounced back with two close wins, including 2-0 in the elimination match over Belleville East’s Lucas Ber-

nal, to claim third at 126 and his first state trip.

After dropping a 5-3 quarterfinal decision at 106 to Joliet West’s Darvell Flagg, Plainfield North’s Marcus Povlick responded with four straight victories to claim third place in a weight class that featured four state-ranked competitors.

Plenty of other area competitors fell a win shy of state trips. Providence’s Ben Emery lost on an ultimate tiebreaker to Moline’s Trenton Jackson at 106; Joliet West’s Austin Poch and Plainfield North’s Tyler Myers both fell at 113; and Lincoln-Way East’s Jake DiBenedetto – a state qualifier last year – fell, 2-0, to Edwardsville’s Tanner Ambry at 120.

Others who came up one victory short of state appearances were Plainfield South senior Andrew Bonner and Providence’s Cole Smith at 138; Joliet Central’s Tyler Lawson and Plainfield South’s Joe Miner at 152; Plainfield South’s Adrian Cervantes at 160; Lincoln-Way Central senior Brandon Dominski at 170; Plainfield East senior Jacob Hughes at 220; and Lincoln-Way East’s Sam Diehl at 285.

FRANKFORT – After Lincoln-Way East’s competitive cheerleading squad graduated 11 seniors from its 2014 largeteam state championship squad, most expected someone else to capture the 2015 title.

But that did not include the Griffins and their wife-husband coaching duo of Julianne and Jayson Polad, who felt they were certainly capable of repeating, despite the new look.

On Feb. 7 in Bloomington, the Griffins proved the skeptics wrong as they edged Lockport, 93.73-93.6, for top honors in the large-team division – marking just the second time a team had repeated in that division, with the Porters also doing so in 2007 and 2008.

Only East’s girls track and field program previously were able to capture back-to-back state titles, doing so in 2013 and 2014.

“Jayson and I pride ourselves in building a culture where we allow anything to be possible,” Julianne Polad said.

“So for us, it was really about focusing on the kids’ talents and strengths and where we could pull things in different directions in order to provide them with the best opportunity to win. We made a lot of changes in order to address the rubric appropriately, and it paid off in the end. Jayson is very innovative with stunts and pyramids, and I’m kind of the cleanup person – so together we provide a good team.

“It takes a lot of love, a lot of hard work and a lot of sweat and tears, so we couldn’t be more proud of the kids. In our little geographical area, we have a plethora of really strong, talented teams; so our sectional competition was extremely tight, and being able to come out of that alive was one of our biggest successes. On the outside looking in, it might have been easy to predict that we might not win again. But we told the girls from the start, ‘If you trust us, we’ll give you the road map, and we’ll take you where we need to go.’ ” Members of this year’s squad include Gabriella

“Winning the first time was an incredible experience, but doing it again was more difficult,” four-year performer Mia Corazzi said. “People didn’t expect us to do it again

after graduating 11 seniors, including 10 from the floor. Last year’s team was really special to all of us since it was the accumulation of two years of hard work, since we only graduated two seniors the year before that. So we were kind of expected to win last year.

“Winning one time is difficult, but doing it two times is even harder. We had four freshmen who came up who were incredible, and we couldn’t have done it without them. We also had first-year seniors on our team. We had a diverse group of girls that came together for a collective team effort. Obviously, winning state championships relies a lot a lot on skill and talent. But we won because of our passion for what we do and for each other on the floor.”

A year ago, the Griffins easily won the championship, setting a new state record with a 97.06 score to defeat Neuqua Valley by more than two points. But there was much more doubt about how things would turn out this time after

Lockport edged East, 94.4794.2, to claim top honors at the Joliet West Sectional.

“When we won last year, it wasn’t like we knew that we were going to win, but we had a better chance because we had so many of the same girls on our team,” three-year performer Abby Carlson said.

“But after we lost 11 girls from last year, we had so many new people, which made it so much more rewarding to win again since we had to work so much harder. No one wants to see a team win two times in a row, so we had to earn it.

“In the summer, we were a train wreck. We were trying new bases since we had lost so many main bases and secondaries. And we had no flyers, except me, so we had to try to get four freshmen trained since they never had been on such a competitive team before.

Having the top seven teams in the state at the sectional and knowing that only five would make it to state was crazy. But the new people we added handled the pressure really well.”

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane kicked it off for the Blackhawks, and Patrick Sharp finished the job. The star-studded shootout turned into quite a show for the Hawks.

Sharp scored the decisive goal in the tiebreaker, lifting the Hawks to a 2-1 victory Sunday over Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Toews and Kane also converted their shootout attempts, helping the Hawks improve to 7-2 when the game is tied after overtime.

The Hawks went 6-8 in shootout games last season.

“I mean Jonny and Kaner, that’s a 1-2 punch that’s as good as any team in the league, and then Sharpy ends up finishing it,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said.

“So it was necessary today, and it’s been effective for us this year.”

Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves through overtime, but was unable to stop any of the Hawks’ shootout attempts.

Because of David Perron and Crosby, the Penguins still had a chance for a big road win before Sharp skated in and beat Fleury into the right side for the victory. Fleury slammed his stick into the post in disgust after the final play.

“It’s almost unfortunate that it wasn’t a playoff game where I guess you could see a real winner and win,” Perron

said. “They got the two points today, but I thought we were satisfied with how we played the whole 65 minutes.”

Niklas Hjalmarsson scored in the second period for the Hawks, who also posted a shootout win at Pittsburgh on Jan. 21 in their only other scheduled meeting this season. Corey Crawford finished with 36 stops.

The Hawks have captured six of a possible eight points through the first half of a season-high eight-game homestand.

MADISON, Wis. – Frank Kaminsky started hot for Wisconsin, then Bronson Koenig and Nigel Hayes finished off Illinois.

Kaminsky had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and the fifthranked Badgers won, 68-49, on Sunday to clinch the best start in school history.

Kaminsky hit eight of his first nine shots on his way to 17 first-half points but was then held scoreless for more than 16 minutes.

But Koenig and Hayes combined to score 23 points in the second half as Wisconsin (232, 11-1 Big Ten) put the game away.

Koenig finished with 15 points, and Hayes added 14.

Illinois (17-9, 7-6) started the game hot, and four 3-pointers in just more than three minutes infuriated Ryan. Wisconsin responded by clamping down on defense.

The Illini then missed seven of their last eight shots in the half, and the Badgers sandwiched a 20-4 run around halftime.

Illinois was able to get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Northwestern beats Iowa 66-61 in OT, snaps slide

EVANSTON – Once the shock wore off and the sting went away, Tre Demps had little doubt Northwestern would pull out the victory.

Bryant McIntosh scored 18, and the Wildcats ended a 10game losing streak with a 66-61 overtime win over Iowa after the Hawkeyes’ Jarrod Uthoff nailed a 3 at the end of regulation on Sunday afternoon.

Demps scored 16 and Alex Olah had 11 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, and the Wildcats (11-14, 2-10 Big Ten) regrouped after Uthoff forced OT with a huge, contested shot.

“First reaction, it feels kind of like a knife into my heart,” Demps said. “But I think Coach (Chris Collins) did a great job lifting our spirits up so we could battle for another five minutes.”

Uthoff, who scored a career-high 25 points for Iowa (15-10, 6-6), nailed a long off-balance 3 from the wing at the end of regulation even though Vic Law was all over him. But the Wildcats scored seven straight in overtime, ending their longest slide since they dropped 12 in a row in the 1999-2000 season.

Lewis men 4th, women 5th in GLVC swim tourney SUBMITTED REPORTS CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The No. 19-ranked Lewis men’s swimming team wrapped up the Great Lakes Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night with a fourth-place finish.

Sophomore Bryant Jacobs used a time of 15:53.41 for an NCAA B performance and second-place finish in the 1,650-yard free. Junior Caio Azevedo swam a 16:30.60 for seventh.

Just like on the women’s side, a Flyer finished second in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore Bryan Wiener swam

an NCAA B time of 1:47.57, less than a second behind the first-place finisher.

Drury edged the Flyers by .21 seconds in the 400 free relay. Wiener, Matt Bacinich, Victor Tarin and Aidan Brennan swam a school-record 2:59.25. It met NCAA B time standards.

In the 200 breaststroke, Zach Ballon took third in 2:00.94, a B cut and a school record. Tarin finished fourth in the 100 free in 44.72, an NCAA B time. It also broke his own school record.

NEW YORK – Russell Westbrook scored 41 points, one shy of the NBA All-Star Game record, and the Western Conference beat the East, 163-158, on Sunday night.

The Oklahoma City speedster had a record 27 points by halftime and closed out the scoring with two free throws, falling one point shy of Wilt Chamberlain’s 42 points in the 1962 game. He was voted the game’s MVP. The NBA’s return to New York showed off everything about the Big Apple, and Westbrook stole the show on one of sports’ biggest stages.

By the time Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” played after the game, it was clear Westbrook was king of the hill among the NBA’s best.

James Harden added 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the West, which built a 20-point lead in the first half and then pulled away after it was tied at 148 with a little more than 4 minutes remaining.

LeBron James finished with 30 points but couldn’t lead the East to the victory in his favorite NBA arena.

Harden’s 3-pointer snapped the final tie with 4:02 to play and Chris Paul followed with consecutive baskets. Westbrook’s fifth 3-pointer put it away at 158-149 with 2:22 to go.

If the blood becomes extremely acidic, ketoacidosis can cause falling blood pressure, coma and death.

Ketoacidosis can occur when people with Type 1 diabetes stop taking their insulin injections or if their insulin dose is too low. It can be triggered by an infection or severe physical stress, such as an injury or surgery. Your body can need more insulin than usual when under stress.

Ketoacidosis rarely occurs in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Ketoacidosis is treated in the hospital with insulin, fluids given into a vein and potassium supplements.

If you have Type 1 diabetes, you can help prevent diabetic ketoacidosis by taking insulin as directed and following the diet prescribed by your doctor. You should also test your blood glucose regularly. If your blood glucose reading is very high, test your urine for ketones using special paper test strips that you should have at home. Check your blood sugar more frequently if you are sick or under stress.

You can get ketoacidosis, but if you continue to take proper care of yourself, you may never suffer from this potentially serious condition.

Dear Doctor K: I have had Type 1 diabetes for 20 years. I’m worried I may get ketoacidosis, even though I never have. How do I protect myself?

Dear Reader: You are at risk for ketoacidosis, but the fact that you’ve never had it is encouraging. It means you’re already doing the things you need to do to prevent it. That’s important, because diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complication of Type 1 diabetes.

Let’s start with a few basics. Type 1 diabetes is often called “insulin-requiring” diabetes. It is caused by an attack of your immune system on the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. As a result, you need to take insulin shots to compensate for the insulin your pancreas cannot make.

Why do you need insulin? Insulin allows sugar to leave the blood and enter the cells of your body.

The cells are where the sugar is needed because they use it as an energy supply. When your pancreas cannot make enough insulin, sugar stays in your blood since it can’t get into your cells. That causes blood sugar levels to rise.

When you don’t make enough insulin, your blood also becomes more acidic, mainly because low insulin causes fat in your body to break down into substances called ketones. Ketones are an alternative source of energy for your cells.

However, ketones are acids, and they raise the acid level in your blood.

Another reason your blood becomes more acidic in Type 1 diabetes is that the high blood sugar causes you to pass a lot of urine, which then causes you to become dehydrated. Being dehydrated makes it harder for your kidneys to get rid of extra acid.
