JOLIET – A Crest Hill man will likely remain locked up while an appeals court decides if his confession can be used in his murder trial.

Bruce J. Gempel, 51, accused of fatally stabbing his 89-year-old neighbor and setting her house on fire in Bruce November 2012, Gempel still needs to post a $1 million bond to get out of jail, Judge Dave Carlson decided Wednesday.

Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald said even if an appellate court agrees Gempel’s confession was obtained illegally, Gempel still will face murder and arson charges.

Assistant Will County Public Defender Kristine Honiotes said the DNA matches to Gempel and three male relatives, but it cannot be matched to an individual. Fitzgerald argued none of the other men whose DNA was checked, including two others who were ruled out, had unexplained scratches on their faces after the fire.

But Gempel did.

On Nov. 18, 2012, an off-duty firefighter passed by Dumyahn’s house in the 2300 block of Caton Farm Road and saw smoke. The firefighter forced the door open and brought Dumyahn outside to discover she already was dead.

Police said Dumyahn was stabbed 20 times.

Investigators allege that Gempel, who lived next door with his brother’s family, fought with Dumyahn over small loans she recently had given him.

In August, now-retired Judge Robert Livas ruled Gempel was arrested without probable cause and nothing

changed in the hours before he gave incriminating statements to police. While being questioned by detectives with the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force at the Romeoville police station, Gempel asked about speaking to a lawyer three times and said he wanted to leave twice after taking a lie detector test, according to testimony at earlier hearings.

Prosecutors said the “confession” Gempel gave about 12 hours after being brought to the station was obtained after investigators had obtained additional probable cause to keep him in custody.

It could take more than a year before the case is heard by an appellate court, according to the public defender’s office.

As the hearing finished Wednesday, Gempel returned silently to the jury box and sat next to Jerry Nichols, another Crest Hill man facing murder charges in an unrelated case. Nichols said something briefly to Gempel, but Gempel did not acknowledge the comment.

LOCAL BRIEFS Police: Man brought $20K in cocaine to drug deal

BOLINGBROOK – Police said they seized $20,000 worth of cocaine from a Chicago man on Tuesday.

Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad Director Mike Weber said Juan Cecenas-Montes, 32, was the target Juan Cecenasof a monthlong Montes investigation, as he allegedly sold cocaine in the Bolingbrook area.

Weber said undercover officers made several purchases from Cecenas-Montes before busting him at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Weber said MANS agents seized nine ounces of cocaine and a 2009 Nissan Altima while making the arrest.

Cecenas-Montes, of the 3900 block of South Western Avenue in Chicago, was booked into the Will County Jail on three counts of delivery of drugs.

Man charged with impersonating an officer

MOKENA – Police say a Crestwood man claimed to be an FBI agent when he stopped another driver earlier this month.

According to police reports, a 44-year-old woman was driving home about 4:25 a.m. Feb. 3 when she was flagged down at 191st Street and Schoolhouse Road by a man driving a silver Ford Taurus.

The man reHarold W. portedly said he Jensen was an FBI agent and asked what she was doing out at that hour.

When the woman said she was going to get gas, he “stuck his head inside her vehicle and looked at her gas gauge,” police said.

The “agent” was wearing a black leather biker’s vest, blue jeans, a stocking cap that said “Security” on it and a badge hanging on his neck, according

to police reports.

The man told the woman he would follow her to the gas station. She went to the Shell station, but the pumps weren’t working, so she drove to the BP across the street. When she noticed the man in the Taurus had followed her to the second gas station, she went inside and called 911.

Mokena police put out a description of the bogus federal agent and were told Orland Park police believed it was Harold W. Jensen, 60.

“Orland Park [police] have had 19 separate contacts with Jensen over the years, and many of their officers are familiar with him,” Mokena police said.

Jensen was charged with impersonating a police officer after being identified by witnesses, police said. He was booked Monday into the Will County Jail after being released from a mental health facility in Palos Heights.

LOCAL BRIEF Man sentenced to 160 years for sexual assault JOLIET – A Bolingbrook man was sentenced Wednesday to 160 years in prison for sexually molesting a young girl.

William K. Freund, 33, took pictures in 2009 of himself having sex with a then-6-yearold girl, according to investigators. Two years later, Freund’s wife discovered the pictures on a memory card and notified the victim’s mother, who contacted police.

Freund was arrested in September 2011 at his home in the 400 block of Seminole Lane. In October, he pleaded guilty to four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s office.

On Wednesday, Judge Edward Burmila sentenced Freund to 40 years on each count. The sentences will run consecutively.

Area trivia teams compete in 2015 Great Read kickoff event

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The name of the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry before Albus Dumbledore was on the tip of Allison Ward’s tongue Wednesday night.

The Oswego resident and her team, Harry Potter Fanatics, needed that name to stay in the tournament during a sudden death tiebreaker against Star Wars group “Psychotic Minocks” at the Great Read “Pop Culture Clash” trivia contest at Barnes & Noble in Joliet.

The answer was “Armando Dippet,” and the team left in second place. But they had fun.

“I can’t even remember the number of times I read the books,” Ward said, remembering the days when she would listen to Harry Potter audiobooks on long car rides.

Fans of “Star Wars,” “Doctor Who” and DC and Marvel Comics also tested their knowledge.

The contest marked the beginning of the Great Read program, which spans libraries and school districts from Shorewood to Lemont, seeking to promote reading through activities related to this year’s theme.

That theme is “Pop Goes the Culture.” Libraries and schools are holding events related to interests, such as Sherlock Holmes, “Game of Thrones,” “Twilight,” “Star Trek,” Pinterest, college football and Neil Diamond.

“Our goal is to promote literacy and love of reading,” said Lynnette Hopwood, an adult services librarian at Fountaindale Public Library in Bolingbrook.

At least 65 children, teenagers and adults formed about 15 teams and faced off in an NCAA basketball tournament-style bracket.

“We were pleasantly surprised by the response,” Great Read coordinator Tom Hernandez said.

Each team had its own area of expertise. And the members would answer questions about their own topic no matter who their opponent was. That meant teams faced off against the topic, not the opponent.

home planet of Chewbacca in “Star Wars” to the names of the two goats that pull Marvel Comics hero Thor’s chariot.

Child care providers plead with state lawmakers for budget shortfall fix

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Grace’s Place day care owner Margaret Keough won’t make payroll March 1 unless state lawmakers address a $300 million budget shortfall for a widely used state-subsidized day care program.

Her 30 employees would be out of a job, and Keough said she would be forced to close her three day care centers – located in Naperville, Plainfield and Plano – leaving the nearly 130 children enrolled without services.

Keough was among a dozen or so child care center owners and providers who on Wednesday attended a child care funding forum hosted by state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet. Other area lawmakers also attended.

“I actually give $194,000 just in payroll taxes a year to the economy,” Keough said.

“We’re just a small business.

Imagine the economy if [everyone in this room] goes under.”

The budget shortage is a result of the state spending plan approved in May. The Illinois Department of Human Services announced last month it won’t be able to fully fund the Child Care Assistance Program, known as CCAP, through June.

Child care providers are dealing with late state payments – a catastrophic domino effect that could leave parents and day care center employees jobless, said Cicily Gant, owner of Shelby Scholars, with locations in Joliet and Robbins.

“Whatever hat you may wear, whether it be the child care provider, the employee or the parent, we’re being forced to make drastic decisions in an untimely manner,” Gant said.

Katie Moore, owner of Kiddie Academy in Bolingbrook, said Wednesday her center would, at best, last a couple of months and then be forced to shut its doors. About 65 percent of her clients rely on CCAP funding.

“It’s very real to them. It’s very real to me as a business owner that we could go out of business,” Moore said.

Moore broke into tears at one point, explaining to lawmakers what could happen if they don’t solve the funding crisis soon.

Kathy Fudge-White, director of early childhood services at Catholic Charities, said she’s received an influx of calls from concerned parents.

“They’ve been told by their provider that they no longer can provide care for them if the situation is not resolved and they’re trying to get to come to Head Start. Unfortunately, we cannot service all of them.

We have a waiting list,” FudgeWhite said.

Several said they waited for answers from party caucus leaders and Gov. Bruce Rauner, who are in the midst of negotiations related to the budget crisis.

Options to fix the funding issue include granting Rauner wider authority to reallocate money from other budget areas or shifting $300 million to the program from surplus funds within the state budget. An agreed-upon solution has yet to emerge.

The funding crisis is rooted in the spending plan approved last May by a Democratic-controlled Legislature and then-Gov. Pat Quinn. Many criticized the budget for not having enough money to make it through the entire year because it relied on the extension of the temporary state income tax hike, which expired Jan. 1.

Will County plans to increase overweight limit on Arsenal Road

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County plans to increase the overweight limit for trucks on Arsenal Road to keep commerce moving into local intermodal yards.

Some grain already is being hauled elsewhere and there is a threat of businesses moving out, officials said.

The developments follow the decision last month by the Illinois Commerce Commission to shut down the railroad crossing at Walter Strawn Drive to vehicles, a major entry point to the CenterPoint Intermodal Center parks in Joliet and Elwood where freight is moved between trains and trucks at two intermodal yards.

County-controlled Arsenal Road is a major alternative, but weight limits are lower there than what was allowed on Walter Strawn.

“There was the potential of businesses actually leaving if they couldn’t access the facility,” said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh.

The Will County Board Executive Committee voted Thursday for a temporary amendment that would increase the weight limit on Arsenal Road to 92,000 pounds a truck. The weight limit is now 88,000 pounds.

The amendment will go to the full County Board, which is slated to vote at its Feb. 19 meeting.

The amendment also creates a new fee structure for permits.

The amendment only is good for 90 days because the county is concerned about future maintenance issues with heavier trucks on Arsenal Road.

“Going to 92,000 pounds from 88,000 on roads built

for 80,000 is a big deal for us,” Executive Committee Chairman James Moustis said.

The numbers of heavy trucks going onto Arsenal Road has spiked since Walter Strawn was closed. The county issued 7,300 overweight permits in 11 days following the shutdown.

That compares to 16,000 permits for all of 2014.

The increased traffic and weight will tear up Arsenal Road over time, County Highway Engineer Bruce Gould said.

“You’re putting a burden on the taxpayers,” he said.

Plus, he said, county staff has been deluged with requests for overweight permits at $20 a trip. The new fee structure should require less permit processing by replacing the per-trip permits with a daily permit at $50, a weekly permit at $250 and a monthly permit at $500.

County and state officials are meeting to talk about a possible long-term solution: letting the state take over the road and its maintenance.

In the meantime, something had to be done to give trucks access to CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet and Elwood, officials said.

“At the end of the day, there was no route getting in there,” said Adrian Guerrero, public affairs director for Union Pacific, which has an intermodal facility at CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet.

Some haulers already were taking grain to river terminals in Morris rather than breaking down into smaller loads to bring it to CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Elwood, said Mark Schneidewind, Will County Farm Bureau manager.

Joliet barge operation needs federal approval

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A plan to put a barge services facility on cityowned property along the Des Plaines River needs federal approval, but the future operator has expressed confidence the project will move forward.

Illinois & Michigan Oil plans to build a facility to maintain, supply and clean barges running up and down the Des Plaines River.

The Joliet location at 622 Railroad St. is an attractive one because it is close to locks where barges stop anyway, said James Capparelli, attorney for Illinois & Michigan Oil. “A location just below the locks is a central location for barge traffic,” Capparelli said.

“They’re stuck there anyway.

You can repair their barges while they’re waiting to go through the locks.”

One potential snag in the plan is that the 2010 deed through which the city of Joliet received the property requires that it only be leased “for law enforcement purposes and/or emergency management response uses.”

The property was in the hands of the Federal Emergency Management Agency before the city received it. Joliet has considered using it for police department evidence storage.

But city officials said that plan was put off because of property rehabilitation costs.

Capparelli said Illinois & Michigan Oil is confident the federal government will sign off on the lease because the company can show the operation meets U.S. Coast Guard standards for a maritime security facility.

He said the company provides training on water emergencies at its Lemont facility with local fire departments.

the property. The company estimates it will spend $1 million rehabilitating the property for its uses, including environmental cleanup estimated at anywhere between $50,000 and $300,000.

The council vote was divided, with opponents, including Mayor Tom Giarrante, wanting the city to table the matter and pursue a possible better deal with IMO. Supporters described the plan as a win-win for the city because it puts the property on the tax rolls and brings jobs.

“The city doesn’t have the money to use this property,” Councilman Jim McFarland said.

Remediation will make the property usable, he said. Even if the federal government rejects the IMO plan, any money spent by the company will not cost the city, he said.

The Joliet operation will be larger than the Lemont facility, Capparelli said. That operation has about 20 employees.

IMO plans to hire at least 30 people over the next two years for the Joliet operation.

During the course of City Council discussions about the Joliet project, the future operator has regularly been referred to as Egan Marine. But the city lease identifies the company as IMO. IMO is owned by Derek Egan, who is from the same family that owns Egan Marine. But the two are separate companies that operate next to each other in Lemont, Capparelli said.

Robert Simenson Sr., 91, of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, was a Lockport native who ran The Shopper Publications, a monthly newsletter and the Cameron Chronicle newspaper in Cameron, Wisconsin.

He died Feb. 3 at Heritage Manor in Rice Lake.

Simenson said her fatherin-law, a World War II Navy veteran, was a “people’s person” involved in everyone’s lives. At one point, he invited some homeless people to stay with him.

“He would literally give you the shirt off his back,” she said.

He also was a down-toearth guy with a great sense of humor, she said. People thought of him as amicable, Robert Simenson Sr. someone they could disagree or agree with. And he wasn’t interested in money.

“Money was never a priority. It was more of a necessity in order to fulfill some of his passions, which included caring for other people,” Sue Simenson said.

Simenson’s The Shopper Publications were bought by former owners of The Her-

ald-News, Copley Publishers, in the 1980s. For 30 years, he published a monthly newsletter called “Pass It On,” which reached more than a dozen countries.

He founded and published the Cameron Chronicle newspaper in his 90s, Sue Simenson said.

“He was mentally always working and writing his newsletter to his dying days,” she said.

He also was the owner of many businesses, including

Bobby’s Copy Shop in Rice Lake.

Simenson wrote two books, one called “Not To Be Forgotten,” which told the story of his son Sgt. Timothy Simenson, a Crest Hill police officer shot and killed in the line of duty in 1994. Sue Simenson said she thought the book was his way of “dealing with the death of his son.”

Simenson was a member of many community and civic organizations. He was the president of the Joliet Chris-

tian Youth Center, where Sue Simenson met him and her future husband, Timothy.

Sue Simenson said Bob was peaceful toward the end of his life. He would comfort his friends, who worried about him dying.

“He knew where he was going and he was comfortable with that,” she said.

A memorial service for Simenson was held Sunday at Rice Lake Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Full closure of Brandon Road to start

JOLIET – Work at the Brandon Road railroad crossing at Woodruff Avenue will require a full closure of the road, Joliet officials have announced.

Ragnar Benson Construction LLC will complete rail work for the Joliet Bulk Barge and Rail at the Brandon Road crossing. The work will require a full closure of Brandon to install a third rail at

the crossing, according to a city news release.

The work is set to start Thursday and is expected to last about six weeks.

The detour will use U.S. Route 6 to the north, Illinois Route 53 to the east, and Laraway Road to the south.

The district spent more than $40,000 last year to repair damage relating to vandalism, according to recently released 2014 annual vandalism report.

Fly dumping – when people illegally dump garbage and take off – accounted for 208 of the 318 vandalism incidents reported countywide last year. Hammal Woods in Joliet and the Wauponsee Glacial Trail experienced the highest number of vandalism incidents.

The totals represent a 105 percent increase in incidents from 2013, and a 33 percent increase in total costs, according to the study. Part of

said Cindy Cain, forest preserve district spokeswoman.

Cain said staff uses the reports to identify patterns, target areas with the highest cleanup costs, increase police patrols where necessary and educate the public.

“There are better ways to handle this stuff,” Cain said.

Graffiti, crashed gates, stolen signs, along with garbage and tire dumping, were among the vandalism reported to the district last year.

People have also reported the dumping of animal waste, clothing and electronics.

“Most women don’t really often have overt chest pain that accompanies heart disease,” said Dr. Mary Gordon, a physician on staff at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, in Joliet. “You can have chest pain, but the most common symptom women experience when they’re developing heart disease is fatigue, which is why it’s very difficult sometimes to identify the problem. Women are tired in general because we’re taking care of husbands and children and everything else.”

Gordon cautioned women not to confuse heart disease symptoms with general fatigue.

“It doesn’t just mean you’re tired and worn out from everything you do every day,” she said. “But if you’re feeling overwhelmingly fatigued, like even just getting that last load of laundry done or doing the dish-

es seems like an insurmountable challenge, this is not normal and you really should talk to your doctor about it.”

Another symptom women should look for is nausea. Often they have some chest discomfort but they tend to have a kind of GERD-type symptom - belching and nausea.

“They often chalk those symptoms up to being acid reflux, when in fact, that’s angina that they’re experiencing,” Gordon noted. “One way you can know is if you have this nausea as you go up the stairs or running to your car. That tells you that there is something else going on.”

Age makes a difference too.

Women under 55 are more likely to have subtle symptoms.

Those over 55 are more likely to have more testosterone and less estrogen so they’ll likely have more typical symptoms.

“So when we talk about differences, a lot of time it’s the younger women where we’re seeing these symptoms,” said Gordon.

JOLIET – The Forest Preserve District of Will County is moving forward with an ambitious plan for a countywide bikeway system connecting communities and open spaces within the preserves.

The district’s Board of Commissioners on Wednesday approved the hiring of the Chicago-based AECOM Technical Services as a consultant for project development for $48,447.

Will County is the only county in the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s seven-county region without an established detailed bikeway plan. Ralph Schultz, the district’s planning and operations director, said this planning builds upon the district’s already established bikeway system.

“In the past, we’ve also looked at our bikeway planning from a recreational standpoint, but as the county becomes more densely populated, we’re now trying to

connect our communities with alternative modes of transportation,” Schultz said.

Although planning will not be completed until July 2016, the district will seek public input long before then, he said.

The plan will identify road corridors where bicycle accommodations are important for connections and safety, which will help guide future bikeway projects and set priorities.

The contract’s scope of work includes general project management, stakeholder advisory committee engagement and an analysis to determine deficient areas and identify gaps in connectivity within the regional bicycling network.

AECOM staff also will develop a strategic framework for bicycling, cost estimates, project concepts, implementation strategies and a final bikeway plan.

The bikeway plan would serve as a complementary document to CMAP’s regional comprehensive GO TO 2040 plan and Will County’s long-range transportation plan.

More power, higher ‘standards’ enhance Dodge 2015 lineup The Chicago Auto show always has “wow,” and the Dodge display will be no exception.

Center stage, according to Dodge, will be given to the 2015 Charger Hellcat and Challenger Hellcat, vastly upgraded versions of the “basic” models, and with 707-horsepower monster 6.2-liter Hemi engines that Dodge says can rocket either from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under four seconds.

After the wow, however, the “real” stars emerge. These are the mainstays of the 2015 lineup, the vehicles you can sit in, examine thoroughly, ask about, collect materials on ... or do all that and take yours home from your local dealership.

Shorewood to buy new JJC buildings briefly evacuated weather warning siren Road projects, police training approved

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Village trustees have approved the purchase of a new outdoor warning siren for the northern part of Shorewood and a cellphone data extraction system.

The board Tuesday also approved the village’s 2015 Motor Fuel Tax Street improvement program.

Emergency siren added

Village staff identified a stretch of land along Black Road between Hammel Woods Forest Preserve and River Road that needed more siren coverage in case of a tornado or a strong weather event.

The American Signal T-128 Outdoor Warning Siren will be installed for $19,900 near the

intersection of Black Road and Rollingwood Drive to service that stretch, Police Chief Aaron Klima said.

The purchase will be made through a re-allocation of unused money.

“This would be, in essence, covering our entire northern border,” Klima said, adding that staff will look to install one more siren in the southeast corner of the village within the next year.

The village would be responsible for powering and maintaining the siren.

The siren will be the second installed by the village within a year. In August, trustees approved a siren installed at Cene’s Four Seasons Park at a cost of $19,500.

Other sirens in the village are located at the intersections

of Route 52 and Interstate 55, Route 52 and Ridge Road, and Interstate 55 and Interstate 80.

Officials: Natural gas smell from nearby training exercise THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Gas coming from a nearby facility caused brief evacuations of four buildings at Joliet Junior College on Wednesday afternoon after a smell of natural gas was detected, officials said.

Buildings S, T, U and L were evacuated as a precautionary measure about 2 p.m. after several people reported the smell of gas in the S, T and U buildings, spokeswoman Rachel Rose said.

The evacuation was lifted about 2:30 p.m. Joliet Fire Battalion Chief Laroy Aldridge said Nicor was do-

ing a training exercise that included intermittent gas release from a Nicor facility on County Farm Road north of the main campus.

Nicor spokesperson Jae Miller said in an email Wednesday that the gas company wasn’t aware of training in the area.

“We checked with our folks and we are not aware of any such matter,” Miller stated in the email, directing questions to pipeline companies operating in the area.

“There is no safety concern right now,” Rose said Wednesday afternoon. “Students are allowed back into the buildings.”

Crest Hill considers single site for wastewater treatment

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Crest Hill may scrap its west wastewater treatment project and consolidate all water treatment through its recently renovated east treatment plant.

The City Council last week decided to explore constructing an addition to the east treatment plant at 2250 Broadway St., approving a $22,200 contract with Strand Associates to complete a study of the option.

The study would help the council decide whether it’s more feasible to continue with a west treatment plant, or to add on to the recently constructed $24 million east plant.

The east plant handles most of Crest Hill’s sewage, but not all of it, Public Works Director Brent Cann said.

The study will examine the viability of adding new pipes and a pump, a lift station and

a sanitary main to the east plant.

That addition could cost $10 million to $15 million, Cann said.

“What we’ve done is taken a little bit of a step back to examine what’s the best option for the long-term,” Cann said.

That long-term benefit could be lower maintenance costs and a central location for all wastewater treatment, Cann said.

The west plant at the corner of Theodore Street and Gaylord Road is nearing the end of its operational life, and the city authorized $20.3 million in bonds for the west plant reconstruction in February.

Mayor Ray Soliman said bids received for the west treatment plant were too high.

But he said the city could re-bid the project if it chooses to continue with the west plant.

OBITUARIES FRANK D. BENEDICT Frank Daniel Benedict “Dan”, age 67, of Plainfield, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at home surrounded by his wife and daughter.

Survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary Lou (Boyd) Benedict of Joliet; daughter, Danielle (Brian) Blake of Joliet; sisters-in-law, Sally (Bob) Hlavka and Donna (Victor) Biasetti; mother-in-law, Margaret Boyd; and also numerous nieces, nephews, wonderful friends and Payton, his grand dog who truly became his companion.

Preceded in death by his daughter, Megan Benedict (1993); parents, Frank and Rosemary Benedict; and father-in-law, Donald Boyd.

Dan loved and used his endless creativity through carpentry and woodworking, he was an avid NHRA and Formula I racing fan. He was known for his kindness, the ability to talk to anyone, a generous loving spirit who was always providing guidance and advice and his ability to make everyone around him feel special. His passion was education and encouraging his daughter, Danielle, to further her degrees and pushing his daughter, Megan to know that she was just as special as any other child. All who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him will dearly miss him. In his last days, he emphasized a quote from Jimmy Buffet which defined his life, “some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all of the way.”

He graduated from Loyola University in 2005 and was a 1965 graduate from Joliet Catholic High. His most recent endeavor was working for the University of St. Francis as a shuttle bus driver. Over his career, he retired from Loyola University Maywood, owned his own carpentry business and was a local 174 carpenter.

A special thank you to the Cardinal Bernadine Cancer Center at Loyola Hospital in Maywood where Dan received excellent care from the physicians and staff during his illness.

Also a huge thank you to Joliet Area Community Hospice especially his nurse, Heather, for bettering his quality of life during the last few weeks.

MARIE ANN DORRIS Marie Ann Dorris was born December 14, 1946 to Margaret and Warren Dorris, Sr., Winona, Mississippi.

She passed away suddenly on Friday, February 6, 2015.

Marie was raised and educated in Joliet, IL; attending grade school and high school in Joliet. Her parents raised their children in a Christian home and they were actively involved in ministry at Prayer Tower Church of God in Christ. Marie participated in the Youth Department and Music Ministry as a soloist and choir director in her formative years.

Marie married William Alexander and three children were born to their union, Michelle, Yolanda and LaCresha Alexander. She took on the role of being a mother, homemaker and loved raising her young daughters.

During her lifetime she was employed at Howard Johnson Restaurant and Community Care in Joliet.

Her interest included, family, cooking, reading, singing, good conversation with her best friends and

her morning “hook-up” telephone conversation with her five sisters.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Michelle Yvette Garner; her grandfather, Pastor Warren C. Dorris, Sr. and two brother-in-laws, Eddie B. Westmoreland and Charles Williams.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her two daughters, Yolanda M. Alexander and LaCresha L. Alexander of Joliet, IL; two grandchildren, Alexis M. Short and Christian Alexander of Joliet, IL; her mother, Margaret Dorris; one brother, Pastor Warren (Rita) C. Irene F. Koren (nee Suligoy), age 94, of Joliet, formerly of Shorewood and Wilmington, IL, passed away Monday, February 9, 2015, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Irene was born on December 4, 1920, to Joseph and Mary (nee Prelos) Suligoy in Rockdale, IL. She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl-Ann (Frank Mantia); one daughter-in-law, Judy (the late Eugene “Gene”) Koren (nee Jerzycki); and three grandsons, Daniel (Trish), Randy (Lisa) and Scott (Carolyn).

Loving great-grandmother of Ian and Connor Koren. She is also survived by many treasured nieces, nephews and friends, including her extended family of Pam, Bill, Taelor and Eric Brett.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley (1986); son, Eugene “Gene” (1995); five sisters, Anna Klein, Josephine “Jay” Boyer, Mary Gattiglio, Rosalie Woodin and Florence “Sally” Majeske Edwards.

She was also preceded in death by brothers, Joseph, Andrew and Tony Suligoy; along with special sisters-inlaw, Tillie Suligoy and Vivian Suligoy.

DOROTHY L. MAVRICH Dorothy L. Mavrich, age 94.

Peacefully Tuesday February 10, 2015 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Born in Rockdale and a lifelong Rockdale / Joliet area resident.

Survived by her three sisters, Amelia Kay (late Robert) Movold, Alice (late Jose) de Rotaeche and Gladys (late Dr. Harold) Visotsky; two nieces, Robin Visotsky and Maria (Sean) Green; two nephews, Dr. Jeffrey (Lisa) Visotsky and John (Mapy) de Rotaeche; great-nieces, Joanna de Roteache and Morgan Grace Green; great-nephews, Zachary and Trevor Adam Visotsky and Matthew Louis Green; and a dear friend, Robert Baher.

Preceded by her mother, Luba in 1999; father, Louis in 1951; and a sister, Mildred in 1922.

Dorothy was born in Rockdale with a move to Joliet in 1955. Dorothy was a music instructor at the Joliet Conservatory of Music until a major fire in 1974. She continued teaching at her residence. Teaching piano provided her with the insight to the importance of the various art disciplines. She enjoyed teaching all age levels.

At the age of 50, Dorothy became interested in politics but never sought office. Her interest in public housing, inequitable taxation and preservation of the then Rubens Rialto Square Theatre, led to the formation of the organization the Will County Cultural Arts Association in 1975. A name change to the Rialto Square Arts Association was instrumental in bringing the theatre under public ownership in 1978. The theatre was built by the Rubens brothers in 1926 and known as one of the wonder theatres in the world. Dorothy has received many awards which she credits to the Rialto, volunteers/donors, Chris Dragatsis and the late John Racich who assisted greatly in the theatre

coming under public ownership. Also, former Governor Thompson and former late Rep. Le Roy Van Duyne.

Her answer as to why her dedication to the preservation of the theatre: “I knew that if the arts couldn’t bring people back to the downtown (now called City Center) nothing could.”

The reopening of the theatre in 1981, as a performing arts center, was the major turning point in bringing people back to City Center. Dorothy’s most cherished award is the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities from the Lewis University. Her major disappointment was not seeing the theatre open under the name of Rubens Rialto Square Theatre. She is thankful that the City, State and Federal Governments recognized the importance of the need to preserve the theatre of future generations. When the theatre became public property, Dorothy continued her dedication to the arts through a grant program under the Cultural Arts Council of the Joliet Area. Those serving on this board: Chet Kondratowicz, Sue Swarthout, the late Dr. Theodore Z. Polley, the late John H. Cheville, Jan Challender, J. Robert Russ, Roger Wargo, Rosemarie Devine, Lynne Lichtenauer, Jean Matoura and Holly Tomashek. Also, the late Shirley Gursh served for many years. Dorothy served as president from 1975 through 2006.

Dorothy is the author of two books: WHY NOT? A JOURNEY THROUGH MUSIC LAND! and a poetry book THINKING. Two local artists were involved with the books: Hugh Tinman, deceased and John Hudak, deceased.

Born in Chicago, she formerly resided with her late husband Morris H. Smith who pastored the Second Baptist Church in Joliet for many years. When in Joliet, she worked with Special Education at District 86. While at Second Baptist she worked with many ministries, including a prison ministry at Stateville Correctional Center. Moving to Raleigh, she resided there until her death.

Preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Morris H. Smith (2007), one sister and two brothers.

She is survived by two devoted daughters, Angela (Anthony) Dear of Alpharetta, Georgia and Michele (James) Jackson of Raleigh, North Carolina; Three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Four brothers and one sister. Nieces, nephews, and a host of friends also survive.

Jeno Toke, age 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 8, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with his family by his side, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Jeno was born on January 30, 1935, in Nagymakfa, Hungary. He left Hungary in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution with his wife, Eva and brother Otto. They settled in Crest Hill, started a family, and have been residents since 1956.

He was a member of the Pipe Fitters Union Local #597 for many years. His hobbies included racing pigeons and thoroughbred horses.

He loved his hobby farm and spent countless hours caring for the animals and building in his workshop.

Jeno is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eva; daughters, Judit Ksiazak, Susan (Rick) Wilhelmi, and Ildiko (Paul) Vineis; grandchildren, Magda, Ilona, Michelle, Rick, Paul, Michael and Christina; and brother, Otto (Rose).

Preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen; parents, Martin & Terez Toke; sister Iren; and brothers, Imre, Karoly, Gyula and Bela; all of Hungary.

Dr. Mary Catherine Ritter, age 71, died Thursday February 5, 2015 after a brief illness.

Mary was born in Minneapolis, MN on May 10, 1943, the daughter of George and Lorraine Ritter.

She graduated with a degree in chemistry magna cum laude from the College of St. Francis in 1965. She began her studies in cholesterol biosynthesis at the University of Minnesota, receiving a Master’s degree in 1969, and then her Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1971, also from the University of Minnesota.

She moved to Chicago and worked in the lipid research labs at the University of Chicago, and then Rush-Presbyterian Medical School. She has many publications. She was retired at the time of her death.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her siblings, Dr. Dorothy Ritter M.D., Ph.D. of Madison, WI, Barbara (Richard) McHugh of Alpharetta, GA, Rita (the late Alphons) Bonde of Lake Zurich, IL, Dr. Therese (William) Weiser, D.V.M. of Meridian, Idaho, Lawrence (Lisa Evans) Ritter of Fountain Hills, AZ and Margaret Mary Ritter of Kankakee, Illinois. She also has 11 nieces and nephews and 15 great-nieces and nephews.

Rauner forms panel to study criminal justice system

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner continued his leadership by executive order Wednesday, tackling prison crowding by creating a commission to recommend criminal justice and sentencing reforms.

Rauner appeared in the local courthouse to pay homage to Sangamon County’s community-based prison-diversion program and sign an executive order compelling the panel to provide him by July 1 with preliminary options for reducing the prison population.

It was Rauner’s seventh executive order on his 30th day in office, and it came just hours before an Illinois House Judiciary Committee resumed justice-system revamp discussions to deal with 48,000 inmates in a prison system designed for 32,000 and to which half of all parolees return within three years.

Illinois driver’s licenses may not be good to fly by 2016

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois residents might not be able to use their driver’s licenses at airports starting in 2016.

The Daily Herald said the licenses don’t meet requirements set by the 2005 Real ID Act to increase security. Illinois doesn’t require a birth certificate to get a driver’s license, which Illinois Secretary of State spokesman Henry Haupt said is one of the law’s mandates.

Haupt said state legislators would have to approve funding for changes to driver’s license requirements. He said he’s not sure how much it would cost, but the Secretary of State’s Office previously estimated it

CHICAGO – A jury has returned a guilty verdict against one of two brothers accused of

digging up graves and reselling plots at an Alsip cemetery.

Terrence Nicks was a dump truck driver at Burr Oaks Cemetery in Alsip when prosecutors alleged he Keith Nicks, 51, engaged in the “cold and callous” acts between 2003 and 2009.

The graveyard where the men worked contains the burial site of lynching victim Emmett Till and blues singers Willie Dixon and Dinah Washington.

Cook County prosecutors said the scheme was masterminded by the cemetery’s then-director, Carolyn Towns, and was prompted by the belief the facility was becoming overcrowded.

Towns pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The second of two juries that heard the evidence continues to deliberate Keith Nicks’ fate.

Health officials say 11 now diagnosed with measles

ELGIN – Illinois public health officials now say 11 people have been diagnosed with measles.

A Cook County Department of Public Health spokeswoman said Wednesday the most recent case involves an infant associated with KinderCare in Palatine. Officials said eight other infants and one adult from the day care also have been diagnosed. The adult is not an employee.

A student at Elgin Community College also has been diagnosed with measles.

A Kane County Health Department spokesman said Wednesday the ECC student with measles lives in Cook County.

WASHINGTON – Vowing that Islamic State forces are “going to lose,” President Barack Obama urged Congress on Wednesday to authorize military action against terrorists who are cutting a swath across the Middle East.

Yet he ruled out large-scale U.S. ground combat operations reminiscent of Iraq and Afghanistan.

“I’m convinced that the United States should not get dragged back into another prolonged ground war,” he said at the White House as he set Congress on a path to its first war-powers vote in 13 years.

Despite his words of reassurance, initial reaction in Congress amounted to bipartisan skepticism, with much of the dissatisfaction centered on his attempt to find a political middle ground with respect to ground forces.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR SMALL-BUSINESS OPTIONS FOR HEALTH INSURANCE To the Editor:

Small-business owners looking to secure affordable and quality health care coverage for their businesses and their employees need to be aware of an important deadline that is fast-approaching: Sunday marks the end of the 2015 open enrollment period for the new individual health insurance marketplaces.

The self-employed and small-business owners and employees buying insurance just for themselves and/or their family can enroll in the individual marketplace. To access the individual marketplace, individuals can visit www.healthcare. gov to browse plans and choose one they like.

A clear view of Obama’s religious hypocrisy “Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ.”

These words from the president of the United States, during remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast, have caused an uproar in religious circles – and rightly so – in spite of the administration’s attempts to downplay the nature of his words.

You don’t have to be a longtime critic of the president to see that his deflecting attention away from modern-day evil during a rare occasion to focus on it was a missed opportunity.

It’s one that continues our cultural avoidance of tough questions about faith and reason, a public conversation that typically gets shut down

Besides the Crusades, President Obama mentioned slavery as something that often was justified in the name of Christ, which did a disservice to the abolitionists who were men and women of faith.

The president’s words also were a slap in the face to Christians in the Middle East – including those displaced from Iraq and Syria on account of the Islamic State’s attempts to eradicate their existence in that part of the world.

People being killed for blasphemy and Christians being killed for refusing to

renounce their faith is not a thing of the past, which is why the president’s loaded history lesson wasn’t the best use of his platform.

But President Obama’s most controversial comments at the prayer breakfast weren’t his most alarming.

During that same speech, he said: “No grievance justifies the taking of innocent lives, or the oppression of those who are weaker or fewer in number.”

As the president said this and directed those listening to “Put on love,” I couldn’t help but hear the echoes of Mother Teresa’s speech at a 1994 prayer breakfast: “Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”

This is why we can’t see

clearly. Our national conscience is too clouded, too complicit, too bogged down by false claims of love and choice and freedom.

President Obama also stressed the importance of humility, which he curiously linked to a “suspicion of government getting between us and our faiths, or trying to dictate our faiths, or elevate one faith over another.”

We’re a country that uses God’s name in many ways but also increasingly privatizes the practice of religion, shunts it off to the side and keeps it cordoned off from the public sphere that so needs its influence. The Hobby Lobby health care case before the Supreme Court last summer was about the Obama administration insisting that religious liberty doesn’t extent to people pursuing commercial activity and providing jobs. It’s a posture

that religious believers have contributed to and are now falling victim to. As the president vowed to defend religious liberty, portraying the United States as its beacon, his call to humility underlined the need for self-reflection, as his own administration continues to keep religious believers heading to court.

Humility is needed to see the damage ideology does when it clouds what’s right in front of us, making it impossible to see clearly what’s happening a world away.

Humility is needed to see that humility itself has become its own religion, mandating compliance with a tyrannical impulse.

St. Francis suffers frustrating setback

By DICK GOSS dgosss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A frustrating night ended in exactly that manner for the University of St. Francis men’s basketball team.

Ilya Ilyayev, who hit 13 of 19 shots for a game-high 28 points, had his jump shot from just inside the free throw line rattle in and out as the final buzzer sounded Wednesday night, climaxing Indiana-South Bend’s 67-65 upset victory over St. Francis at the Sullivan Center.

At least the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings say it was an upset.

The Saints (20-7, 14-2) came in with the best record in the league. Indiana-South Bend (610, 11-16), which was without starting forward Oosha Mitchell, has had some difficult losses and took USF to overtime in the teams’ first meeting Dec 13, a game the Saints eventually won, 82-76.

“It’s funny how teams match up against each other,” Saints coach Ryan Marks said.

“They do some things we don’t handle very well.

“You have to give them credit. They were crisp offensively.

They had us on our heels most of the game. They got some big offensive rebounds, and part of that was that they had us so scrambled defensively.”

St. Francis opened the game in an 8-0 hole and never led until Ed Presniakovas (Plainfield South) swished his second 3-pointer of the wild stretch run for a 65-64 lead with a minute left. His previous 3 tied it at 62 with 2:26 remaining.

“I give Eddie a lot of credit for his perseverance and stepping up and hitting those big shots,” Marks said. “His first half probably was as poor a half as he has played from the standpoint of decision-making, and then at the start of the second half, he was not himself defensively. But he stayed with it.”

Presniakovas finished with 18 points, including hitting 4 of 6 from 3-point range. No other Saint besides Ilyayev and Presniakovas managed more than six points.

Indeed, the Saints have won 11 of 15 since a 2-10 start. They are within a game of CCAC South leader Purdue Calumet.

The first half – which ended with USF on top, 44-40 – was strange. Indiana-South Bend (14-14, 7-8) opened with a 14-2 lead and finished the half on a 10-0 run. For the 13 minutes in between, the Saints outscored the Titans, 42-16, as they hit 16 of 23 shots in that span.

“We had some hiccups offensively in the first half, but we still got open shots and hit them,” Ray said. “They played man in the second half, and we ran our offense better.”

In addition, the Saints buckled down defensively, holding Indiana-South Bend to 23 points and 26.5-percent shooting on 9 of 34. Gonnering sat about 5½ minutes after getting her fourth foul with 10:42 left, and the Saints increased their lead from 15 to 17 points in that span, which Quigley was happy to see.

“We were more patient on offense when Katie was out, and after she came back in,” Quigley said. “That helped us put the game away.”

JOLIET – University of St. Francis junior guard Alexis Brown was away from the team for a couple weeks during Christmas break because of a family emergency.

When she returned, Saints coach Samantha Quigley explained there was a reason she was no longer in the starting lineup, a spot also held all of her sophomore season.

“We were winning, and I didn’t want to mess with a good thing,” Quigley said. “I told her that she can be that person that can really give us a spark off the bench. I think she is still getting used to it.”

If Wednesday night’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Association matchup against Indiana-South Bend is any indication, Brown can handle the role.

All she did was score 15 points in the first half on 6 of 7 shooting, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range, then grab eight of her nine rebounds in the second half to lead USF (13-14, 9-5) to an 85-63 victory.

“The first half my shot was going in, and in the second half I wanted to concentrate on defense,” Brown said. “That’s why I got the rebounds. Right

now, I’m just trying to find my rhythm again.”

“Look at her – you would never think she could rebound like that,” Quigley said. “For a guard like her to have nine rebounds, that’s huge.”

Nine Saints logged at least 13 minutes, and a 10th played nine minutes. Senior guard Kaitlyn Ray (Lincoln-Way West) led the scoring, hitting 7 of 11 shots and finishing with 18 points.

Kaite Gonnering, the nation’s scoring leader, and point guard Christina Ekhomu (Joliet Catholic) had 14. Mary Rouse (JCA) chipped in eight, and Kamari Jordan (Bolingbrook) had six.

Cody Brand, Gonnering’s backup, grabbed eight rebounds in 13 minutes as the Saints won their third straight.

“This absolutely was a big win, and we have everybody contributing,” Ray said. “Alexis [Brown] was awesome today.

She kept knocking down shots in the first half and got all those rebounds the second half. She contributes in a big way.”

In an unusual twist, not only did Brown lead the Saints to a 47-31 rebounding advantage, but Gonnering led with five of USF’s 22 assists.

“Probably the first time Katie has done that,” Quigley smiled. “She is getting better,

Joliet Junior College narrowly misses upset of No. 1

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – The North Central Community College Conference has shown why it is one of the toughest and most competitive men’s basketball leagues in the country this season.

Rock Valley is ranked first in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, and Triton is first in the Division II poll.

Rock Valley came to Willis Gymnasium on the campus of Joliet Junior College on Wednesday night and survived the Wolves in a hardfought, 73-69 victory.

JJC (17-10, 3-8) had an opportunity to tie the game with 7 seconds remaining, but a Darius Wells 3-pointer was off the mark.

Rock Valley (23-3, 10-1), the defending Division III national champion, built a 41-35 halftime lead on the 3-point shot as the Eagles were 11 of 14 from behind the arc.

The Wolves’ downfall was the free-throw line, as they went only 12 of 22 in the second half.

“We lost it at the line in the second half,” Wolves coach Joe Kuhn said. “But these kids had that spark tonight and played with a lot of heart. They didn’t

let all those 3-pointers get to them. They really worked hard as a team.”

The heart Kuhn talked about was evident through out the second half.

Rock Valley scored five quick points to open the second half and take a 46-35 lead.

The Wolves then went on a 12-0 run to take a 47-46 lead with 16:09 left.

Rock Valley answered the run with two quick 3-pointers to go up by five, but JJC came right back and led 58-55 with 10 minutes to go.

During a one-minute stretch, the Wolves were only 3 of 7 from the free-throw line,

or the lead would have been larger.

The Wolves built a 65-61 lead on the inside play of Darious Randolph (Plainfield Central), who scored 17 points.

The Eagles answered yet again with two more 3-pointers to take a 69-65 lead with 5 minutes remaining.

JJC cut the margin to 69-68 with 3:20 to go, by going 3 of 4 at the free-throw line.

The Wolves missed a shot with a minute left, Rock Valley hit two free throws and that was the game.

For the game, Rock Valley was 15 of 30 from the 3-point line and was only 9 of 31 from

inside the arc.

JJC outrebounded the Eagles 45 to 26. The Wolves shot 37 percent from the field and hit only three triples.

Wells added 14 points for the Wolves, all but two coming in the first half. Randolph scored all of his 17 in the second half.

Alex Parks (Lincoln-Way Central) added 10.

Rock Valley was led by Mo Jackson and Jared Mayes, each with 18. All of Jackson’s points were 3-pointers.

“If we can play like we did tonight for the remainder of the season, I will take my chances with this team. It was a great effort,” Kuhn said.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – It was just the type of game that Lincoln-Way East boys basketball coach Rich Kolimas felt his squad would have dropped earlier this season.

And it was precisely the kind of contest that Joliet Central coach Jeff Corcoran doesn’t believe that his team should be losing at this time of the year.

The Griffins overcame poor shooting in both the first and third quarters by finishing each half off in strong fashion against the Steelmen Wednesday.

That helped them rally for a 27-20 halftime lead and, more importantly, to come from behind late to capture a 50-42 SouthWest Suburban Conference victory.

“I was able to play a lot of players, and I think that we were fresh at the end of the game,” Kolimas said. “We finally solved their pressure and actually handled it better at the end and got great looks. Our execution was better, and we’re really playing unselfishly now. Early in the year, we would have hit those stretches and we would have

lost our confidence.”

The Steelmen (11-10) outscored the Griffins (9-11) 15-4 in the third quarter to grab a 35-31 advantage with eight minutes left. And they were still up, 40-34, before missing the rest of their shots – which let East outscore them by a 16-2 margin down the stretch.

After going 15 of 33 from the floor through three quarters, Central connected on only 2 of 17 tries during the final period. It also finished 4 of 12 from the free-throw line. The Steelmen wound up shooting 8 of 29 in the final half and 17 of 50 for the contest.

“We were up, 20-14, in the second quarter, and they go on a 13-0 run,” Corcoran said.

“We couldn’t finish halves, couldn’t finish quarters or play with the lead. It’s just one of those things that these guys have got to figure out.

It’s not anything other than execution. We just didn’t go strong to the rim with the lead or when we were tied, which made us play tight.”

While the Steelmen were struggling from the floor during the final eight minutes, the Griffins were on fire, making good on 7 of 8 attempts. Despite hitting only 5

of 24 tries during the first and third quarters, East wound up shooting 19 of 42 for the game.

Jake Attar led East with 11 points while Matt Hayes added 10 points and five rebounds.

Jackson Bax contributed eight points and Justin Siorek had seven points.

“It was a lot of fun,” Attar said. “Those runs to end the second quarter and the game were due to great teamwork and defensive effort. I think a lot of it’s due to our practice, where we’re doing game situations. We were down in the third quarter, and we were not giving up. It’s good to get a win like this, especially with a few games left. It was just a great game.”

Things were looking good for Central after it jumped out to a 14-8 lead after one quarter and still led 20-14 with just under three minutes left before the break. But that’s when East went on its first roll, rattling off the final 13 points of the half to take a seven-point lead.

Central’s Jerry Gillespie scored 12 points, Kenyon Woodfork (five rebounds) and Ternell Jordan had seven points each, and Malik Fuller added six points and nine rebounds.

Players to Watch SUBMITTED REPORTS ROSEMONT – Two University of Illinois junior left-handed pitchers, Joliet Catholic graduate Kevin Duchene and Lemont graduate Tyler Jay, were among three players named by conference coaches to the Big Ten Players to Watch list for the upcoming season.

Each coach was asked to submit three of his players for the watch list. The three named from Northwestern included senior right-handed pitcher Brandon Magallones (Providence).

Illinois was picked to finish third behind Maryland and Nebraska in the conference race. Duchene went 4-1 last season with a Big Ten-best 1.80 ERA, 35 strikeouts and 55 innings in nine starts. He missed a large portion of the conference season because of injury. Jay, pitching in relief, earned second-team All-Mideast Region and AllBig Ten honors.

Jackie Robinson West loses title over map help pleas

By JON SEIDEL and SETH GRUEN Chicago Sun-Times When troubling allegations first surfaced last year that the Jackie Robinson West All-Stars baseball team cheated its way to a national championship, Little League International officials investigated from afar.

They made phone calls.

They looked at a boundary map dated May 1 to make sure members of the team that stole Chicago’s heart met residency requirements making them eligible to play. Everything looked in order.

But the whispers wouldn’t go away. So Little League President and CEO Stephen Keener

said his organization decided to visit Chicago. And in a series of face-to-face meetings Jan. 31, new information surfaced that led to the league’s announcement Wednesday that it was stripping Jackie Robinson West of its national championship.

Now, months after Jackie Robinson West brought together people of all races, Little League’s decision has prompted fresh and divisive allegations of discrimination around Chicago.

Little League officials learned Illinois District 4 Administrator Michael Kelly didn’t follow proper procedure when Jackie Robinson West’s

boundary map was redrawn and approved, Keener said.

The new map allegedly stole territory from three neighboring leagues – the Roseland, Rosemoor and South Side little leagues.

That map was sent to Little League this fall to rebut allegations of cheating, Keener said. But officials learned Kelly back-dated it to make it “legitimate for the 2014 season.”

And finally, after allegations against the South Side baseball team began to “gather some steam,” Jackie Robinson West officials allegedly asked the Roseland, Rosemoor and South Side leagues to cede the territory. All three refused,

Keener said.

“We were not expecting such an outpouring or an earful of information,” Keener told the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Because we had talked to a lot of these same people over the course of late October, into November, December and quite frankly they really didn’t want to share any information with us. They said, ‘You know, it was a great run for this team.

We’re happy for these kids. We really don’t want to cause any trouble.’ ” Rosemoor Little League Chairman Ralph Peterson denied that any Jackie Robinson West official approached him to falsify a league boundary

map. He said he’s “very in the loop” and would have known if it happened.

Still, Kelly has now been removed from his position. Jackie Robinson West manager Darold Butler has been suspended from Little League activity.

Jackie Robinson West will have its tournament privileges suspended until it appoints replacements for JRW President Anne Haley and Treasurer Bill Haley.

And Keener said a veteran district administrator will be brought in to take over Illinois District 4 to either clean it up – or dissolve it.

“That district is a mess,” Keener said.

Lincoln-Way Central wrestling coach Jason DePolo heads into this weekend’s Class 3A Normal Community Sectional feeling confident for a very big reason.

That’s because the Knights claimed four of their six regional titles from 170 to 285 pounds, and those four wrestlers – Brandon Dominski (170), Jake Dudeck (182), Sean Kelly (220) and Bryan Ditchman (285) – are ranked and figure to be in the mix to earn trips to the state meet.

“We haven’t had the level of competition with our big guys like this,” said DePolo, a 2003 Central graduate. “When we start practice to when we finish, it’s kind of a bloodbath in there sometimes. But it’s a fun group when you’re a big guy like me. Practices are going to be tough, but I grew up in that room with Rudy (Mark Ruettiger) doing that same thing.”

The Knights have another ranked individual among their 10 qualifiers – Vinnie Piunti (120). Lockport, which was the other area Class 3A school that won a regional title, has four athletes in the rankings. Coach Josh Oster’s Porters pace all area teams with 11 qualifiers.

Leading the way for the Porters are ranked individuals Abdullah Assaf (113), Shayne Oster (138), Trevell Timmons (152) and Tyler Johnson (195).

“This is the part of the season we train all year for,” Josh Oster said. “Our schedule is tough for the purpose of preparing for the postseason; now we have another three weeks to finish strong. Our guys are excited to compete both for the individual and team state series. This is the next step for our team to get where we want to go.”

Of the 19 area individuals in the latest GEI Wrestling Apparel rankings on Illinois Matmen, 11 of them compete in weight classes from 170 to 285.

Joliet West’s Darvell Flagg (106) and Minooka’s Carson Oughton (170) are two of those ranked competitors. They join Oster and Johnson as individuals seeking a third state trip.

Others who qualified for state a year ago and are ranked include Plainfield East’s Michael McGee (106) and Zach Krause (138), Plainfield South’s Eric Johnson (220), Timmons, Piunti and Ditchman. Lincoln-Way East’s Jake DiBenedetto (120) also advanced last year.

Daniel Sedin leads Canucks past Hawks

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Daniel Sedin scored his second goal at 1:20 of overtime, and the Vancouver Canucks recovered after blowing a late two-goal lead, beating the Blackhawks, 5-4, on Wednesday night.

Henrik Sedin made a great pass to his brother in the middle of the ice, and Daniel pushed it into the open left side of the net for his 13th of the season. He also scored in the third period to give Vancouver a 4-2 lead with 4:37 remaining.

Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists for the Hawks, who looked listless for much of the night, and then closed with a flourish. Marian Hossa scored two goals for the third consecutive game.

Vancouver had a 3-1 lead before Hossa rushed in from the right side for a power-play score at 12:48 of the third. After Daniel Sedin restored the Canucks’ two-goal lead, the Hawks rallied again.

First, Brandon Saad got a piece of Duncan Keith’s shot for a power-play goal. Then Hossa beat Eddie Lack on a bad-angle shot from the left side for his 16th, tying it at 4 with 55 seconds left.

ed “Hossa! Hossa!” before the start of overtime, but Daniel Sedin quickly ended the extra session. He has 19 goals and 30 assists in 51 career games against the Hawks.

Linden Vey, Bo Horvat and Zack Kassian scored in the second for Vancouver, which bounced back from Tuesday’s 5-3 loss at Minnesota. Lack had 37 saves one night after he replaced Ryan Miller in the second against the Wild.

The Hawks made a couple of costly mistakes in its defensive zone, and Vancouver jumped on the miscues to move in front in the second period.

The Hawks had a turnover and struggled to get the puck out of their end before the Canucks turned a 3-on-1 rush into Vey’s tying goal at 4:42. Radim Vrbata passed to Chris Higgins on the left, and he moved it to the other side to an open Vey for his eighth of the season.

Vrbata has two goals and six assists in a seven-game point streak.

Hawks defenseman David Rundblad then had an ugly sequence that ended with Horvat’s go-ahead score. Corey Crawford stopped Ronalds Kenins’ drive, but Rundblad was unable to clear away the rebound and Horvat slammed it home for his sixth goal.

Journey Pregnancy & Life Hub in Mokena seeks to serve the whole person

By DAWN AULET Shaw Media Correspondent MOKENA – Christine LaVine and Margie Doorn want to build relationships.

The co-founders of the faithbased Journey Pregnancy & Life Hub in Mokena set out to create a space where women could come for mentoring and counseling.

Journey is about more than providing services. It strives to care for the whole person.

“Whatever seasons of life a woman is in is basically what we address,” LaVine said.

“Most of them come to us at a time of crisis.”

To make Journey’s services most accessible, LaVine and Doorn made them free.

Any expenses associated with running Journey are on LaVine and Doorn, not the clients. Women need only call and make an appointment.

“We just constantly do fundraising initiatives,” LaVine said.

Although the focus is on women, Journey also has a male mentor for male clients.

But the two did not want their nonprofit to be limited to people in crisis. They also wanted to reach people in the community in a welcoming way. So they built a facility that includes a cafe, a resale shop, and areas to socialize and to provide a way for people to check them out before committing to a program.

Even the coffee and baked goods are free.

“Our front area is where we do our services, and our back area is where we do our resale shop,” LaVine said.

“We have our own signature coffee – Journey Joe.” For client and mentor Trisha Clyde of Frankfort, the social aspect is the best part.

“It’s a very relaxing setting,” Clyde said. “I love being there.”

JOLIET – The Rotary Club of Joliet has announced that Jeffrey Budz is the December Student of the Month for Joliet Catholic Academy.

With a GPA of 3.65 on a 4.0 scale, Budz is a member of the National Honor Society, Scholastic Bowl Team (All Conference), yearbook, student newspaper and Latin Club.

He is the captain of the JCA boys varsity volleyball team and a Hilltopper football defensive lineman. He volunteers at Joliet Catholic Academy’s Adventure Camp and Upward Basketball.

Budz is the son of Jeff and Karla Budz of Joliet and a member of Holy Family Parish.

He is the oldest of five and enjoys spending time with his sister and brothers – Karlyn, Jacob, Johnny and Justin.

After graduation, Budz plans to attend either Loras University or the University of Iowa.

Exchange Club’s Nov. student of month for JCA JOLIET – The Exchange Club of Joliet has named Maxwell Brzostowski as the November Student of the Month for Joliet

Catholic Academy.

Brzostowski has received academic honors in advance placement U.S. History, General Business, physics, biology, English I, English II and World History. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Math National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Scholastic Bowl Team, Key Club, Spanish Club and Hillzone.

He plays for the JCA varsity baseball team and the Downers Grove Longshots (travel team). Brzostowski is the son of Debra and Thomas Brzostowski of Woodridge and a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Lemont.

After high school, Brzostowski plans to study business or economics. He would like to play collegiate baseball and hopes for a career in sports business.

Priestly died in 1804, but that is still true today if we append “face to face.”

Communication in bridge is twofold. During the bidding, each player is trying to describe his hand to his partner. In the play, it is the ability to get from one hand to another.

How does South communicate to make three no-trump in today’s deal after West leads the spade queen and East signals enthusiastically with his seven? (Given that declarer is known not to have four spades, there is a strong case for East’s playing his king at trick one.)

Declarer has only six top tricks: one spade, one diamond and four clubs. If he plays on hearts, here he will lose four spades and one heart.

Instead, South should try to gain four diamond tricks. This requires not only finding East with the diamond king, but also perhaps having to take that finesse three times. If so, what are the three dummy entries?

juice. The citrate in these beverages helps to stop stones from forming.

• Eat calcium-rich foods.

Most kidney stones contain calcium, which usually hooks up with a chemical called oxalate. The calcium in foods and drinks binds to the oxalate inside the gut and passes out of the body in a bowel movement.

As a result, less calcium goes out in the urine. This reduces the chance that stones will form.

• Decrease sodium (salt) in your diet. A high-sodium diet can trigger kidney stones because it increases the amount of calcium in your urine. If you have had a kidney stone, limit daily sodium to 1,500 milligrams (mg).

• Limit animal protein.

Eating too much animal protein increases the amount of uric acid in the urine. This can cause uric acid stones. It also can trigger formation of stones that contain calcium. A high-protein diet also reduces levels of citrate, which helps prevent stones from forming.

• Limit stone-forming foods if you have had kidney stones. If you were able to collect the stone in your urine after it was passed, and your doctor examined it and said it was a calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate stone, limit oxalate- and phosphate-containing foods such as beets, chocolate, spinach, rhubarb, tea, most nuts and colas.

Fortunately, I’ve never suffered from a kidney stone. But if I had – based on what my patients have told me – I would do anything to avoid a second.

had a very painful kidney stone. What can I do to prevent another?

Dear Reader: First of all, my sympathies. Pain from passing a kidney stone can be as bad as any kind of pain.

Kidney stones are hard, chemical deposits that form inside the kidney chambers where urine is collected. Urine passes from the kidney down a narrow tube (the ureter) and into the bladder. If a stone gets carried into the narrow ureter, it can get stuck. This can cause severe pain, bloody urine, nausea and vomiting.

If you’ve had one kidney stone, you’re at increased risk for another.

That’s because you probably have a tendency (based on your genes, your diet or both) to form kidney stones.

New guidelines say the best way to prevent a second kidney stone is to drink lots of water every day. Keeping your urine diluted makes it harder for stones to form.

The guidelines are based on clinical trials of treatments and diet changes that doctors commonly recommend to help prevent second kidney stones. The researchers found enough evidence to say drinking lots of fluids reduces the risk of a second kidney stone.

They did not find enough evidence to recommend other treatments or diet changes – but that’s not the same as finding evidence that other treatments don’t work.

I still plan to recommend the following steps to help prevent even a first kidney stone. These are all healthy suggestions, whether or not they actually prevent kidney stones: • Drink enough water.

If you have had a kidney stone, drink enough liquids to pass two quarts (8 cups) of urine a day.
