Detective: Loza offered no explanation for fatal injuries

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Santos Loza told detectives he didn’t know how an 8-month old boy died in his home on Oct. 27, 2008.

But an officer testified Monday that Loza told her he hadn’t taken Kevion Bender anywhere and no one else had been in his Woodside Court townhouse while he cared for the baby.

Sgt. Linda Odom made an audio recording of her interview with Loza after Kevion was brought to the hospital and a video recording as he was questioned by her and retired Det. John Nosal at the police station that night.

Both recordings were played to jurors Monday to start the second week of Loza’s second murder trial.

Kevion’s mother, Sandra Sitko, dated Loza for a few months before asking him to

take care of the infant while she worked on Oct. 26, 2008.

Sitko returned late that night with her other son and looked in from the doorway at Kevion, who appeared to be sleeping. Kevion was unresponsive when they awoke the next morning.

“What do you think happened?” Odom asked Loza during both interviews.

“I don’t know ... maybe he suffocated and [turned while] sleeping on the floor,” Loza said that night.

An autopsy between the interview sessions that day revealed head injuries – including a fractured skull – led to the infant’s death.

“We know what happened to this kid. Now we need to know why,” Odom told Loza.

“You said he was fine when mom dropped him off. What would you think if you were us?” Nosal asked during questioning.

“I don’t know. I couldn’t tell you,” Loza replied.

Throughout the interview, Loza denied injuring the baby or losing his temper. He also said he didn’t believe Sitko was responsible, either.

During Odom’s testimony, jurors also watched a video of evidence technicians taking pictures of his hands, fingernail clippings and clay impressions of his fists.

Loza was convicted of murder in the matter during a trial in September 2013, but Judge Sarah Jones decided last year defense lawyers were improperly restricted during the trial from asking Sitko about how her sexual relationship with Loza continued after her son’s death.

A pathologist was scheduled to testify Monday afternoon about the blunt-force trauma that caused Kevion’s death.

The trial is scheduled to continue Tuesday.

Gardner mayor died Sunday; Wise had village in his heart

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Gardner Mayor Tom Wise lived to help others and loved the village of Gardner that he called home, according to his family and friends.

Wise, 68, died Sunday evening at ManorCare Health Services in Hinsdale after enduring an ongoing illness.

“He just loved the town,” his son, Scott Wise, said Monday.

“He wanted whatever was best for the town.”

Wise followed in his father Glenn Wise’s footsteps, with both having served as mayor of the village.

Wise was first elected as a commissioner in 1995, and then as mayor in 1999. He was born and raised in Gardner, and was a graduate of Gardner-South Wilmington High School in 1965.

Wise owned and operated Tom Wise Ford in Gardner until 1988 and then worked at Rub Ford until 2012 when he retired.

Commissioner Dick Hileman said Wise always supported the local busiTom Wise nesses in Gardner and shopped locally to help those in business there.

“Tom Wise was born in Gardner and had Gardner in his heart,” Hileman said. “He’s going to be hard to replace.”

Wise was a member of the Gardner Volunteer Fire Department, served as a former trustee with the Church of Hope and was active with the Gardner Beautification Committee and the Route 66 Corridor Committee.

Commissioner Mike Serena said it was a sad day for Gard-

ner and was shocked to hear of Wise’s passing.

“I saw him a few weeks ago and he looked really good,” Serena said. “This was a shock.”

Wise raised his three children Lori Patten, Scott Wise and Tony Wise in Gardner.

Scott Wise said he can’t put into words the kind of man and dad his father was.

“He was just a great dad, he’d do anything for anybody,” Scott Wise said. “He was a great and kind guy.”

Hileman has been acting mayor since October when Wise was hospitalized.

Hileman said he has called the village office and told staff to close the office for Wise’s wake and to fly the flag at halfstaff. The wake is scheduled for 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Reeves Funeral Home, 203 Liberty St. in Gardner. Funeral services will follow Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Drew Peterson is in the spotlight again facing sensational charges – a murder-for-hire scheme to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

Authorities did not give any details on the charges. And Glasgow on Monday said little, noting he may be called as a witness.

But one of the three attorneys who defended Peterson when he was prosecuted by Glasgow called the allegations “unbelievable.”

“I never noticed any animosity Drew had toward Glasgow during the trial,” said Joe Lopez, a Chicago attorney in Joliet on another murder case when the charges were announced Monday.

“I wonder if this is just based on some jailhouse snitch or if there are recordings to support it,” Lopez said. “[Peterson] knows better. It’s very out of character.”

Peterson, 61, appeared to be a carefree suspect in the years leading up to his conviction for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in September 2012. He has appealed that conviction.

Peterson did publicity tours with another former attorney, appearing on national TV. He was regularly available to the media. He considered such celebrity stunts as appearing on a reality TV show about a Nevada brothel.

A made-for-TV movie came out before he was convicted.

The murder-for-hire charges were filed Monday in Randolph County by the Illinois Attorney General’s office and the local state’s attorney’s office. Randolph County is home to Menard Correctional Center, the state prison where Peterson is serving a 38-year murder sentence.

and December 2014, solicited an individual to carry out a murder-for-hire plot against Glasgow. Peterson made an initial appearance Monday on the charges at the Randolph County Courthouse, according to a news release from the attorney general’s office. Peterson did not enter a plea, according to The Associated Press.

The Randolph County State’s Attorney’s office referred questions to the attorney general.

The Attorney General’s of-

fice would not provide any details about the alleged scheme or how close it may have come to reality. A spokeswoman for the attorney general said more details should come out at a March 3 preliminary hearing in Randolph County.

Glasgow scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon but then canceled it.

However, he did have a brief encounter with reporters outside the state’s attorney’s office in Joliet, where Glasgow said he could not comment but did

acknowledge when asked that he could be called as a witness.

Later, Glasgow issued a written statement saying in part: “It is unfortunate that prosecutors sometimes must deal with allegations of this nature. However, in no way will a threat to my personal safety deter me from the important work I perform as the State’s Attorney on behalf of the citizens of Will County.”

Off-the-ice partnership Joliet Jaguars, Rockford Hockey Club come together to support Gardner boy

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Like all sports teams, the Joliet Jaguars and Rockford Hockey Club can be fierce rivals on the ice.

But Saturday, in between the game the two PeeWee-level teams played at Inwood Ice Rink in Joliet, the hockey players joined forces to show caring, compassion and support for Parker Farrero, the game’s honorary coach and captain that day.

Parker is a second-grader at Gardner Grade School who loves hockey. He suffers from Batten disease, a neurological disease where cells are thrown out of balance with the build-up of proteins and lipids (fats), according to the Batten Disease Research and Support Association.

Because the cells become damaged, people with Batten’s begin to experience progressive neurological impairment, including seizures, visual impairment/blindness, personality and behavior changes, dementia, loss of motor skills and the ability to walk, talk and communicate.

gan having symptoms. The first was declining vision, said his mom Theresa Farrero. At first, he was diagnosed with a retinal disease. It took another 1½ years and multiple doctors to discover what was wrong.

“For some kids, it takes years before they find somebody who can diagnose this,” Theresa said.

Parker is nearly blind and has begun experiencing some of the personality changes that make it difficult to handle many situations.

But Saturday, he braved the crowds and the constant noise of the hockey rink to be honorary captain and coach for the Jaguars Team PeeWee Shugle. He was given a Jaguar jersey – No. 5 – a VIP pass so he could go on the Jaguars’ bench, and multiple tokens of support from the PeeWee team and the Jaguar Hockey Club.

Jaguar players wrapped their sticks in red tape, Parker’s favorite color, said Jaguars PeeWee I team manager Kim Parr. They had helmet stickers made for both teams with the slogan “Battling Battens For Parker.”

As Joliet Jaguars got on the ice Saturday, they each greeted their honorary team captain, Parker Farrero of Gardner. Farrero’s favorite color is red, so the players taped their hockey sticks with red tape.

“The kids are really excited about this,” Parr said. “They are honored to have him come and be their captain.”

at Gardner, wanted to have Parker over to play. Quinn’s mom, Lauren Walsh, is the secretary of the Jaguar PeeWee I team, and the two came up with the idea of inviting Parker to one of the games.

“Then it just snowballed,”

Lauren Walsh said. “Parker is such a sweetie.”

Hearing about the events planned for Parker, the Rockford Hockey Club also wanted to take part. The club brought Parker a team jersey and other gifts to give him after the game, Rockford team manager Kevin Wald said. Gifts included tickets to the Rockford Ice Hogs game, signed pictures of Blackhawk players Marián Hossa and Corey Crawford and gear from both pro teams.

Investigation determines Coal City Marine’s fatal fall was accidental

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com POINT, N.C. – The Marines’ investigation into Lance Cpl. Steven Hancock’s death has been determined as accidental.

According to a news release from the United States Marines, “the Marine’s death was likely the result of an accidental fall from the aircraft.”

Hancock, who was of Coal City, died May 19 after falling from an MV-22B Osprey

during a training exercise in North Carolina.

He was laid to rest May 30 in Abraham Lincoln National Steven Cemetery in ElHancock wood.

Hancock, a member of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 and a crew chief on the plane, fell from the open back of the MV-22B during an otherwise routine training flight

about 45 miles west of Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., according to the news release.

There were no witnesses to the fall, but the investigation found no evidence to indicate it was anything other than an accident.

Hancock’s family declined to comment Monday.

Mike Barton, Public Affairs director with the United States Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, said the Osprey can carry 24 combat

troops along with three crew members, but on the day of the accident there were only four crew members on board.

“There was another crew chief on board the aircraft who went forward to talk to the pilots,” Barton said Monday afternoon.

Without a witness, it is impossible to know how Hancock fell, according to the news release.

However, when he was last seen in the back of the aircraft, Hancock was strapped in with

a gunner’s belt, which was attached to the inside of the aircraft with a safety tether.

The gunner’s belt is not a seat belt; it is a belt that is attached to a safety tether designed to allow free movement within the aircraft while aircrew performs duties. Crew members are required to wear the belt and tether while working in the back of the aircraft.

Will-Grundy Medical Clinic offers diabetes prevention program

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic aims to help local residents make changes in their lives to prevent diabetes.

Starting March 2, the Joliet-based clinic will offer a diabetes prevention program.

Clinic staff already is recruiting patients for the program, Kristin Haller, the clinic’s program manager, said.

“We have a lot of patients that are diabetic and a lot in that diabetic range,” she said.

“I think there is a lot of people who don’t realize they are diabetic.”

The clinic created the program thanks to an American Medical Association grant, she said. This year, the program will house 50 patients and teach them how to eat healthier, manage stress and exercise to prevent diabetes, she said.

“It’s important to prevent the disease before it gets out of control,” she said.

Shawn West, the clinic’s executive director, said the rate of people with diabetes in Will County is high, with 10 percent of the population being diabetic.

“Diabetes at this point is an epidemic and is connected to all the other health conditions that significantly contribute to premature death, like heart disease and even cancer,” she said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes can cause blindness, kidney failure and lower-extremity amputations.

It is the seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S. Simple lifestyle changes, such as exercise and a healthy diet can prevent diabetes and a “whole other cascade” of medical issues that come with the disease, she said.

One way people can get screened for diabetes and learn about preventing it is to come to the Heart Health Fair.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A man’s death on a Joliet Township train track appeared to be accidental, police said Monday.

James A. Manstis, 68, of Joliet was struck by a freight train about 2 p.m.

Saturday near the tracks at Rowell Avenue and north of Manhattan Road.

Manstis was walking toward the westbound train at the time, according to a report to police from the engineer and conductor.

“The horn was sounded and the emergency brake was activated,” Will Coun-

ty Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said. “It appeared that Mr. Manstis was running toward the train trying to get to the Rowell Avenue crossing to get to the street. It appeared that he either stumbled or fell to the side of the tracks when the front hand rail of the train hit him.”

Manstis fell into a snow bank, Hoffmeyer said.

Manstis resided on Rowell Avenue in the area of the tracks.

The East Joliet Fire Department took Manstis to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he was pronounced dead at 2:34 p.m.

State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, the new vice chair of the Illinois Senate’s Labor Committee, said Monday she would oppose Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “attacks” on labor unions, while the new governor took another step in a direction likely to antagonize Democrats and unions.

Rauner issued Monday an executive order allowing state government employees to withhold dues if they do not agree with union activities.

The latest action by Rauner adds to other proposals that would restrict union influence in Illinois.

In a written statement accompanying an announcement that Bertino-Tarrant was named vice chair of the Senate Labor Committee, she said: “Gov. Rauner’s recent attacks on organized labor and public employees concern me.”

“It’s just a ploy to weaken

unions,” Bertino-Tarrant said when asked about a Rauner proposal to allow local rightto-work zones.

Teachers’ contract finalized

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A new, finalized three-year contract gives Plainfield School District 202 teachers a 1.1 to 2.6 percent raise each year and additional retirement benefits based on seniority.

The school board unanimously approved the contract 11 days after the teachers union, Association of Plainfield Teachers, approved it.

“We’re looking forward to moving forward,” union president Dawn Bullock said.

“Everybody is relieved,” school board President Roger Bonuchi said.

Teachers have been working without a contract since the last three-year agreement expired June 30. In that contract, teachers went through a pay freeze in 2011-12 and received pay increases of less than 1.5 percent the next two years of the contract.

Other staff, including administration, also took pay freezes during that period.

The new contract, retroactive to July 1, gives teachers a 2.2 percent raise this year, 1.1 percent raise next year and 2.6 percent raise in 2016-17.

Teachers who retired after serving the district for 15 years will get an additional $500 a year in retirement benefits. Teachers with at least 33 years of service will be given $14,000 on top of that.

The contract also addressed teachers’ concerns with workload by adding language pertaining to professional requirements affecting the workload.

“But the bulk of the workload issues are curriculum and instruction issues which we do not have the ability [to bargain],” Bullock said, adding that teachers do have a say on committees to address their issues.

In addition to salary, retirement benefits and workload issues, teachers also lobbied for better compensation compared to the previous agreement, but the contract doesn’t address any changes in compensation.

“There was no more money,” Bullock said about the increased expenses the district will have from the other resolved issues.

These major changes in the contract will result in a slight increase in operating expenses, according to a news release sent when teachers approved the contract.

Teachers approved the contract Jan. 29 with a 1,078-554 vote.

For the district, Superintendent Lane Abrell said there was little time before negotiations start with support staff, led by the Plainfield Association of Support Staff. He said he expected health insurance to be the biggest area of focus in those talks.

Bonuchi said the board should now turn their focus to state funding issues, including cuts in state aid, cost-shift of pension liability from the state to the district and potentially several versions of last year’s Senate Bill 16, which would change the state education funding formula.

Public works director responds to Plainfield snow removal criticism

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Feb. 1 blizzard response in Plainfield was hindered by a misapplication of salt and communication issues with contractors, according to a village statement.

“People were frustrated and angry, and I can understand that,” said Allen Persons, public works director.

“We could have been more liberal with the application of salt,” according to the statement.

The village applied 700 tons of salt during the blizzard, but only 100 tons was applied on Saturday between 6 and 8 p.m.

“If we had applied additional salt on the roadways earlier in the storm, it may have allowed the village to remove the snow and ice more easily before it adhered to the pavement,” according to the statement.

Two contractors the village previously hired to handle snow events didn’t report problems they had with their equipment to the village, Persons said, causing a slower response to some neighborhoods that didn’t see a plow until Monday afternoon.

Persons said one contractor had trouble with two of its three trucks.

“We weren’t within that route so we didn’t know there were problems until later in the snow event,” Persons said.

“At that point, we requested additional contractors Sunday evening.”

Persons said the village relied on contractors to give updates on their progress because the entire public works crew was on the street. The village will look at all public works contracts for the next budget based on performance reviews.

Plainfield also adopted a new public comment policy for open meetings that closely mirrors one Romeoville approved in July. It expands public comment time to five minutes for each person. Speakers wishing to address the board need to provide their name and indicate the topic or topics they want to address.

“This is just formalizing what we already do,” Village Attorney James Harvey said, describing the policy as a simpler version of Romeoville’s rules.

The policy also allows the mayor to maintain order and civility during public comment, while urging speakers to direct comments to the board and members of the audience to “refrain from colloquy, debate or exclamation” until they’re recognized.

LOCAL BRIEFS JOLIET – No one was injured when fire damaged a Joliet home Saturday night.

Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said crews were called at 9:41 p.m. to the 200 block of Lincoln Street to find “heavy fire coming from the second floor.”

Residents were not home, but a dog was found unharmed in the basement as the blaze was put out, Carey said. The fire caused about $50,000 in damage before crews extinguished it.

The fire’s cause had not been determined as of Monday morning, according to reports.

Police: Unlicensed driver had gun under the seat

THE HERALD–NEWS WILMINGTON – A Joliet man was charged with burglary and theft after Wilmington police said he took more than $6,000 from his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle.

With the assistance of the Elwood Police Department, Wilmington officers took Bernard L. Fredericks III, 30, of the 100 block of South Reedwood in Joliet, into custody just before 3 p.m. Friday on the 400 block of North Chicago Avenue in Elwood, police said in a news release.

burglary to a motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony and theft of more than $500, a Class 3 felony.

The arrest occurred after Wilmington officers responded to the 500 block of West Kahler just before 8:30 a.m.

Friday. The owner of a vehicle found someone had broken in and taken more than $6,400 in cash, police said in the release.

The vehicle’s owner had cashed her income tax return, which accounted for the large amount of money in her pos-

session, police said. Investigators said they identified Fredericks based on video surveillance footage from a nearby business.

Fredericks was taken to the Wilmington Police Department, where police said he admitted taking the money. At the time of his arrest, police said Fredericks was found with more than $6,500.

Allan R. Braun, age 72, of Elwood, IL passed away Thursday, Feb 5, 2015 at his winter home in Harlingen, TX. He was a very generous and helpful man, always available, lending a hand to all of his friends. Allan retired from Caterpillar tractor Co. in 1998 after 35 years of service. He enjoyed his retirement, walleye fishing vacations in Minnesota with family, spending summers fishing for catfish in Mauston, WI and he thoroughly enjoyed the warm Texas sun, building and fixing everything throughout the winters.

OBITUARY BRIEF Survivor of USS Arizona attack dies at 100

YUBA CITY, Calif. – The oldest living crew member of the battleship USS Arizona to have survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor has died in northern California at the age of 100.

Retired Navy Lt. Commander Joseph Langdell died Wednesday at a nursing home in Yuba City, California, according to his son, Ted Langdell. A tally maintained by the USS Arizona Reunion Association identified him as not only the oldest Arizona survivor, but the last surviving officer from the naval ship that lost 1,177 men when it was bombed Dec. 7, 1941.

Langdell was an ensign on an assignment that had him sleeping on a military base adjacent to the ship in Honolulu on the morning Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Rep. Schock faces ethics questions on home sale

CHICAGO – A watchdog group on Monday filed a complaint against Illinois Republican U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock over his home sale to a campaign donor.

Schock sold his home to an executive at Caterpillar, Inc., in 2012 for more than three times its assessed value, the liberal website Blue Nation Review reported last week. Caterpillar is headquartered in Schock’s district and the executive, former vice president Ali Bahaj, had donated to Schock, the website said.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said the Office of Congressional Ethics should investigate whether the sale violated federal law and House rules.

The congressman has said the price was in line with other nearby properties. Schock also told reporters during a stop in Peoria on Friday that his real estate agent handled the transaction and he never spoke to the buyer.

“There’s nothing there,” Schock said.

Schock bought the vacant property in Dunlap, on which the home was built for $128,250 in 2003, according to property records.

Schock said the home was listed for four years before it sold in 2012 for $925,000. He noted there were other homes in the area that sold for more, and that the price per square foot of comparable home sales “were right in line with what everything was selling for at that time.”

Schock also has faced questions over his lavish office decor, and an aide who posted racially charged comments online. The aide resigned.

to set aside the conviction of a Chicago man whose sentence former Gov. Pat Quinn commuted last month.

Cook County state’s attorney’s office spokeswoman Sally Daly told the Chicago Tribune that prosecutors plan to make the request during a Monday hearing for 51-year-old Tyrone Hood and co-defendant Wayne Washington Jr. The men were convicted in the 1993 shooting death of Illinois Institute of Technology basketball player Marshall Morgan Jr. Hood was released from a southern Illinois prison Jan. 14 after Quinn commuted his sentence. Hood had been scheduled to be eligible for parole in 2030. Washington was released earlier.

Daly says the investigation into Morgan’s death continues and no new charges are pending.

Hood has insisted that evidence pointed to someone else.

3 Illinoisans killed in northwest Indiana highway crash

GARY, Ind. – Police say three suburban Chicago passengers were killed when their vehicle went off the road when the driver tried to pass a semi-trailer on a highway in northwest Indiana.

Authorities say 21-year-old

Shaquita Kendrick of Markham, died after she was thrown from the front seat in the early Sunday morning crash on the Borman Expressway. Calumet City residents 20-year-old Timothy Riley and 21-year-old William Burton Jr. also were killed.

Indiana State Police say the vehicle hit a concrete barrier, flipped on top of the wall and hit a pole before splitting in two.

Two other people were injured in the crash and taken to hospitals. A fourth passenger suffered from internal injuries.

The driver’s injuries weren’t life-threatening.

State police say charges against the 22-year-old driver are pending.

CHICAGO – Early voting began for Chicago’s municipal election, including the mayor’s race.

Early voting started Monday at 51 locations in Chicago.

The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners says each site also will offer voter registration.

The election is Feb. 24.

Sites will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Five sites will be open on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Voters need a government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot.

Voters can use any site in the city regardless of their address.

Police: Chicago teen shot and killed while recording fight

CHICAGO – Police and family say a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed in Chicago while he was recording a confrontation involving his two older sisters.

Authorities say Anthony Diaz was pronounced dead late Sunday at Mount Sinai Hospital. His stepfather, Ralph Otero, says the teen sneaked out around 10 p.m. with his sisters to go confront other girls about an argument on Facebook.

BOSTON – More than 2 feet of fresh snow piled up in parts of New England on Monday, breaking records set during the Blizzard of 1978 and testing the patience of officials and commuters as forecasters warned of more winter misery later in the week.

The latest onslaught forced the cancellations of hundreds of flights, tested transit systems and tempers and collapsed roofs straining beneath the weight of 5 feet or more of snow in less than two weeks.

“It’s awful. I’m done with it.

It’s ridiculous,” said Priscilla Medina, a sandwich shop worker in Westborough, Massachusetts, suffering from a nasty case of snow fatigue.

Man who shot ex, kids had fought over child custody

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – Cedric Prather Jr.’s three children were his whole life and when he lost his job as a truck driver recently, the pressure over supporting them may have led him to snap and kill four people, his sister said Monday.

The shooting rampage happened just after 3 p.m. Saturday.

Prather, 33, parked about a quarter mile away and walked inside the suburban Atlanta home of his ex-wife, Latoya A. Andrews, police said.

Prather gunned down Andrews and her boyfriend, Joseph Terry Brown, and killed two of his own children, including one

who begged him not to pull the trigger, police said. He also shot two other children, leaving them critically injured. He then killed himself in the street.

Prather left no note explaining his actions, Douglas County sheriff’s Capt. Bruce Ferguson said.

Obama, Merkel rally behind diplomacy

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel rallied behind efforts to reach a longshot diplomatic resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine on Monday, but they offered no clear path for how the West would proceed if talks this week fail.

During a joint White House news conference, Obama dangled the prospect that the U.S. could for the first time send anti-tank weapons and other defensive arms to Ukraine. While no decision has been made, the president said he had ordered his team to consider “whether there are additional things we can do to help Ukraine bolster its defenses in the face of Russian aggression.”

Merkel staunchly opposes arming Ukraine’s beleaguered military. The German chancellor, who has perhaps the most productive relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, made clear she had not given up on the possibility that diplomatic negotiations could produce an elusive peace plan.

Justice Thomas objects to court’s signal on gay marriage

By MARK SHERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court is inappropriately signaling it intends to clear the way for gay marriage across the nation, Justice Clarence Thomas complained Monday in a stinging dissent to the court’s refusal to block the start of same-sex marriages in Alabama.

Bitterly objecting to Monday’s action, Thomas provided a rare insider’s perspective on the widely held view that the court’s embrace of gay marriage is a done deal.

Thomas filed a dissenting opinion after his colleagues rejected Alabama’s plea to put a hold on same-sex marriages in the state until the Supreme Court resolves the issue nationwide in a few months.

He criticized his fellow justices for looking “the other way as yet another federal district judge casts aside state laws,” rather than following the customary course of leaving those laws in place until the court answers an important constitutional question.

“This acquiescence may well be seen as a signal of the court’s intended resolution of that question,” Thomas wrote in an opinion that was joined

by Justice Antonin Scalia.

“This is not the proper way” for the court to carry out its role under the Constitution, he wrote, “and, it is indecorous for this court to pretend that it is.”

The opinion was remarkable less for the legal result it suggested than for its open criticism of fellow justices.

After all, many legal commentators have predicted not only the case’s outcome this spring (in favor of same-sex marriage), but the vote (5-4) and the author of the majority opinion (Justice Anthony Kennedy).

“If you read the tea leaves the Supreme Court is leaving, the bans on same-sex marriage can’t be permitted.

Alabama became the 37th state in which same-sex couples can marry, following U.S. District Judge Callie Granade’s ruling in January that struck down as unconstitutional the state’s statutory and constitutional bans.

Granade had put her order on hold until Monday to let the state prepare for the change, and State Attorney General Luther Strange had asked for the delay to be extended for at least a few months.

Monday morning, probate judges in Alabama began issuing marriage licenses to samesex couples, some of whom had been lined up for hours.

The Supreme Court often freezes lawsuits in place when they raise the same issue the court already has agreed to decide. And when federal courts declare state laws unconstitutional, “our ordinary practice,” Thomas wrote, is to prevent those rulings from taking effect while they are being appealed.

But since October, the justices have repeatedly turned away state requests to keep same-sex marriages from taking place until appeals are resolved.

Alabama’s plea was the first since the court stepped into the issue last month to take up a decision by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold laws in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee that define marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

The court has been silent about the reasons for its actions in the gay marriage cases.

Obama faces tough sell for new war powers vs. IS

By DEB RIECHMANN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – In seeking new war powers to fight the Islamic State group, the White House must reconcile demands from Democrats who don’t want another ground war with the concerns of Republicans who want that option left open, congressional officials said Monday.

Obama was expected – as early as Tuesday – to send Capitol Hill his blueprint for an updated authorization for the use of military force, or AUMF. Haggling then begins on writing a new authorization to battle the Sunni extremists, who have seized territory in Iraq and neighboring Syria and imposed a violent

form of Shariah law.

Obama has relied so far on congressional authorizations that former President George W. Bush used to justify military action after 9/11. Critics say the White House’s use of these authorizations to fight IS is a legal stretch at best. The president earlier insisted he had the legal authority to deploy 2,763 U.S. troops in Iraq to train and assist Iraqi security forces, and conduct ongoing airstrikes against targets in Iraq and Syria. More recently, the president has said he wants a new authorization, but he has not released details.

By TOM MURPHY and BRANDON BAILEY The Associated Press Everyone worries about stolen credit cards or hacked bank accounts, but just visiting the doctor may put you at greater risk for identity fraud.

Those medical forms you give the receptionist and send to your health insurer provide fertile ground for criminals looking to steal your identity, since health care businesses can lag far behind banks and credit card companies in protecting sensitive information. The names, birthdates and – most importantly – Social Security numbers detailed on those forms can help hackers open fake credit lines, file false tax returns and create fake medical records.

“It’s an entire profile of who you are,” said Cynthia Larose, chair of the privacy and security practice at the law firm Mintz Levin in Boston. “It essentially allows someone to become you.”

Social Security numbers were created to track the earnings history of workers in order to determine government benefits. Now,

health care companies are, in some cases, required to collect the numbers by government agencies.

But once someone creates a stolen identity with a Social Security number, it can be hard to fix the damage. A person can call a bank to shut down a stolen credit card, but it’s not as easy of a process when it comes to Social Security numbers.

“There is no such mechanism with Social Security numbers and our identity,” said Avivah Litan, a cybersecurity analyst at the research firm Gartner. “You can’t just call the bank and say, ‘Give me all the money they stole from my identity.’

There’s no one to call.”

So being that the data is so vital to protect, health care companies are taking every precaution to defend against hackers, right?

Not necessarily. The FBI warned health care companies a year ago that their industry was not doing enough to resist cyberattacks, especially compared with companies in the financial and retail sectors, according to Christopher Budd of security software company Trend Micro.

An attorney and former executive for GoDaddy.com, Jones had been encouraged to run for years by friends. When the governor’s seat in Arizona opened up, she wound up putting $5.4 million of her own money into the GOP primary only to place a distant third.

No one donated more to a state race in Arizona, not even the well-heeled Republican or Democratic committees.

“If you had asked me two years ago, ‘Are you willing to spend more than 5 million on this thing?’ I would say absolutely not,” Jones said.

More than ever before, national political organizations dominated the financing of state-level races in 2014, especially the committees associated with the major parties and special interest groups, according to a new analysis from the Washington-based Center for Public Integrity.

“If you have cash and you always wanted to be an elected official, that’s certainly not deterring people from doing that,” Republican pollster Greg Strimple said.

The gilded group of self-financed candidates included

both Democrats and Republicans and the odd independent; real contenders and huge longshots, political neophytes and those with experience, and a wide range of backgrounds: cattlemen, lawyers, construction company owners, Internet company executives and radio station owners.

The biggest self-funded player was Bruce Rauner, a Republican venture capitalist who gave close to $28 million to his campaign for governor of Illinois, the study and campaign finance reports filed with the state showed. Counting a postelection infusion, his overall investment probably surpassed $37 million.

Rauner won.

But there were far more losers. They included Arkansas construction company owner John Burkhalter, who gave $2 million seeking the part-time job of lieutenant governor, and A.J. Balukoff, who ran for governor as a Democrat in very Republican Idaho.

South Carolina attorney Tom Ervin, put up at least $3.8 million – and significantly more when postelection funding is counted – running as an independent for governor. He withdrew from the race a week before the election.

Parker still has some sight, and he wears super-powered goggles that help him identify his surroundings.

With warm-ups done and the clock set to begin the first period, Parker was escorted along a red carpet onto the ice, where he got to drop the ceremonial first puck of the game.

The crowd clapped and cheered loudly. Whenever the Jaguars scored, they found Parker in the stadium, skated up to him,

and taped their sticks on the barrier so he could take part in the celebration.

Jaguar families from all team levels came out to meet and support Parker. The stadium was decorated with signs and streamers, and half the proceeds from the chuck-apuck contest went to the Farrero family.

Parker was a bit overwhelmed with it all – the vibrating music in the background between plays, the cheering of the crowds in the stands, even the typical smell of the hockey rink.

When asked if he was having a good time, he managed a big nod of his head and a resounding “yes.” Then with quiet reserve, he added, “That’s all I have to say at the moment.”

The disability community listened with great interest to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s State of the State Address.

We realize that Illinois faces major financial challenges in the years ahead, and we are optimistic about its future.

While Rauner outlined his blueprint for significant change to state government, a key missing component is how to address the more than 22,000 people with disabilities on a waiting list for much-needed supports and services, and how we are going to ensure they are not left behind as the state struggles to get its fiscal house in order.

Ensuring that people with disabilities have the same opportunities,

choices and resources as the rest of society should be high on the list of priorities. We are talking about people with a range of intellectual and developmental disabilities – men, women and children proudly trying to fit in and reach their maximum potential, despite the barriers in their path.

We encourage Gov. Rauner and his team to make employment opportunities for people with disabilities a priority in addition to providing resources to help them live safe, happy and prosperous lives in a community of their choice. The disability community would like to congratulate Gov. Rauner on his success and extend our eagerness to work with his administration to ensure equality for all Illinoisans.

Speech reception shows rough waters ahead for state I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a governor openly and loudly laughed at on the House floor. At least not while he was present.

Gov. Bruce Rauner was doing pretty well with his legislative audience during his first State of the State address last week, delivering strong applause lines with his refreshing calls for bipartisanship. He even thanked legislators “for your service” and predicted they would do “great” things together. He warned them he would say things they liked and didn’t like, and he urged them to see the “big picture” that will “lift up all of the people we’ve been chosen to represent.”

Members of the Legislative Black Caucus were especially receptive to his attacks on labor union apprenticeship programs. Rauner claimed about “80 percent of individuals in Illinois apprenticeship programs are white even though Caucasians make up fewer than 63 percent of our population,” and

VIEWS Rich Miller he demanded that be addressed with legislation. Black and Latino legislators have tried for years with limited success to break those barriers, and no governor has ever sided so clearly with them.

Legislators erupted in loud applause when the governor proposed raising the minimum wage to $10 an hour. But when Rauner added “over seven years,” their laughter was even louder, and longer.

Democrats appeared to realize they might’ve fallen for a bait and switch, and it was mostly downhill from that point on.

Much of Rauner’s address was aimed at his campaign enemies. As usual, public employee unions were at the top of his list. “Government must never force its employees to fund activities they do not support,” Rauner claimed.

But, by law, state workers are not required to pay full union dues. They are automatically enrolled into what’s called “Fair Share,” which is the portion of dues that funds things such as collective bargaining, grievances, etc. They can opt in to full dues, which includes funding for things such as political work, if they choose.

The Illinois Hospital Association backed Gov. Pat Quinn last year, and Rauner took a clear shot at the IHA last week. “While we currently ban contributions from many businesses with state contracts,” he said, “some of the largest recipients of taxpayer money, like hospitals that receive millions from Medicaid, are still able to funnel huge campaign donations to elected officials.”

He then called for a campaign contribution ban from “organizations funded by entities receiving state Medicaid funds.”

But hospitals don’t fund the IHA’s political activities, mainly because most are nonprofits and are banned by

law from contributing. Pretty much all of the group’s political contributions come from hospital executives.

The IHA clearly was surprised by the gubernatorial shot across its bow. “We’re not sure where this came from,” said an exasperated IHA executive. Not for nothing, but the IHA attempted to atone for its Quinn contributions by donating $100,000 to Rauner’s inauguration fund – and the check was cashed.

By the time he got around to attacking the trial lawyers with a proposal to ban all attorney contributions to judicial candidates, not a single person applauded on either side of the aisle. He waited for a briefly uncomfortable moment, then moved on.

Rauner’s people say he feels “liberated” since the election to say whatever he wants, hence the constant references to his enemies list.

There are those – myself included – who believe there may be a method to the

madness. Under this theory, Rauner has planted his flag on a distant economic fringe so he eventually can drag the General Assembly off its current path. If he eventually is willing to compromise and tone things down, it just might work.

But it would’ve been much better for Rauner if he was booed last week. From some I’ve talked to, he may even have wanted that to happen.

Being booed by the “entrenched elite” would’ve been a net positive for him with the general public. And legislators might’ve felt bad about booing him once they had time to reflect. Maybe they’d even feel the need to apologize for such a negative reaction.

But when people are laughing at you, they don’t care what you think, and they’re most definitely not listening.

Some rough waters are dead ahead.

Ekhomu, Acosta shine in JCA win

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Even though Joliet Catholic never trailed by a point, the girls basketball game felt a lot closer.

It took Nicole Ekhomu’s nine fourth-quarter points for the Angels to outlast Marist, 58-52, in an East Suburban Catholic matchup Monday night.

The under-the-net dominance of junior Andriana Acosta and sophomore Ty Battle throughout the game didn’t hurt, either.

The Angels (16-8) led by as much as 39-24 in the third quarter, but late-quarter turnovers brought Marist back into the game. In the last two minutes of the quarter, JCA turned the ball over five times.

“They penetrated the ball a lot,” Acosta said. “We didn’t have the gap closure that we talked about at halftime. Then we started getting in the gaps and pressuring the ball a lot, which helped us out. They weren’t too good with ball pressure, which helped us come back.”

By the fourth quarter, JCA needed a spark, and Ekhomu rose to the occasion.

One minute into the quarter, she scored on a layup.

Less than 30 seconds later, the 5-foot-9 junior got a steal and scored another basket.

“I knew that I had to start scoring,” Ekhomu said. “I really didn’t score a lot in the first half, and the game was still kind of close. I started scoring, then looking for teammates because they started double-teaming me.

“I knew if they were closing in on me, then one of my teammates was open and that they were going to score a basket.”

Ekhomu had a dominating performance throughout and ended with 13 points, eight assists, three rebounds and four steals.

“Nicole is a great player,” Acosta said. “We know that she can score whenever she wants, plus she can helps us score.

When she gets the ball she can see, she has a high basketball IQ, which helps us a lot. We

Acosta and Battle also played strong defensive games.

Acosta, who at times outrebounded up to three Marist players simultaneously, posted a team-high 10 rebounds.

Battle finished right behind with eight. All the Angels in the frontcourt battled hard on the boards, and it was evident.

“We know that we’re not too big of a team, we’re a young team,” Acosta said. “We try as well on defense to get our rebounds. On the offense side, we know we can run the ball a lot. So our mindset is to do good on defense, which today we did great.”

Things are starting to look better for the Angels. In this victory, JCA showed it can play well under pressure and out-hustle teams for a victory.

Ekhomu, who was out with a back injury the first half of the season, said things are starting to flow better than they did early in the season. Of course, her presence is helping spark some of that.

As intriguing as the NCAA Tournament is year in and year out, it’s always a little better if a former Joliet area standout or two can play prominent a role on teams that make the field.

It’s a little early yet, but there is chance we will have that situation to enjoy a little over a month from now.

Let’s review the solid contributions former area players are making in NCAA Division I basketball, beginning with Boise State’s Derrick Marks (Plainfield Central).

The 6-foot-3 senior guard continues to make a case for Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference, where he has been the Player of the Week three times already. Ever since Anthony Drmic, Boise State’s second-best player, went down after seven games with an injury, Marks has put the Broncos on his back.

Boise State (17-6, 7-3), which is riding an eight-game winning streak, is a half-game out of first place in the conference race, and is no worse than a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament.

Marks leads the Mountain West with a 23.1 scoring average in league play. Overall, he is averaging 30.6 minutes, 19.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals. He is shooting .515 from the field, .516 from 3-point range on 48 of 93 (ranking fourth in NCAA Division I) and .833 from the free-throw line.

Also having a huge season is Bowling Green 6-foot-8 senior Richaun Holmes (Lockport). He averages 29 minutes, 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.6 blocks and is shooting .559 from the field, .375 from 3-point range (9 of 24) and .701 from the free-throw line. He scored 18 points, including 2 of 4 3-pointers, and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday in a 69-65 victory at Northern Illinois.

Bowling Green (15-6, 7-3 in the Mid-American Conference) may yet wind up under consideration for the NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore forward Ben Moore (Bolingbrook) averages 25.0 minutes, 7.5 points 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists for SMU (19-5, 10-2 in American Athletic Conference), a likely NCAA Tournament team. He is shooting .448 from the field and .702 from the freethrow line.

Junior forward Brian Bennett (Plainfield East) is averaging 29.5 minutes, 11.4 points and 6.3 rebounds and is shooting .526 from the field for Cal

Getting away from NCAA Division I for a moment, three of the best guards of recent vintage in our area – Kevin Kozan (Providence), Juozas Balciunas (Lemont) and Morris Dunnigan (Joliet West) – are playing well away from home.

Kozan is averaging 32.5 minutes, 14.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals for Division II Henderson State in Arkansas (9-12). He is shooting .448 from the floor, .412 from 3-point range on 63 of 153 and .767 from the free-throw line.

Balciunas is averaging 7.2 points, 2.3 assists and 1.6 rebounds at Weatherford (13-11), a Division I junior college in Texas. He is shooting 393 from the floor, .358 from 3-point range and 830 from the foul line.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Bolingbrook, of course, built a girls basketball dynasty under former coach Tony Smith. Morgan Tuck and Ariel Massengale, perhaps the Raiders’ two best ever, are playing key roles on highly ranked Division I women’s teams.

Tuck, a 6-foot-2 sophomore forward, was averaging 24.5 minutes, 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists and was shooting .581 from the floor and .809 from the free-throw line for No. 2 UConn (23-1); she scored 17 points in Monday night’s victory 87-62 over No. 1 South Carolina.

Massengale, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, is averaging 27.7 minutes, 10.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists for No. 6 Tennessee (20-3). She is shooting .379 from the field, .374 from 3-point range and .872 from the free-throw line.

While we’re hopeful the men’s teams where our former area players are starring will make the NCAA Tournament field, we know the women’s tournament will be a must-see, with Tuck and Massengale playing prominent roles on two of the top teams in the nation.

Lincoln-Way West gets offense going vs. Central

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – After a couple of lackluster offensive showings in recent games, Lincoln-Way West boys basketball coach Brian Flaherty felt his team needed to focus primarily on that aspect during a Saturday practice.

And the extra emphasis on offense paid off in Monday’s SouthWest Suburban Conference Red game with rival Lincoln-Way Central.

The Warriors relied on the hot hands of Anthony and Jon Marotta to collect 30 points in the first half as they went on to capture a 56-36 victory over the visiting Knights.

“I usually like what we do defensively, but the last two games before this we won pretty ugly,” Flaherty said. “So in practice on Saturday, we really got after it. We didn’t mess with anything on the defensive end of the floor, which is very rare for us.

We had to straighten out some stuff offensively, and we were a little bit crisper in our execution.

“We were crisp moving the basketball; and when we do that, we establish a nice rhythm offensively – and that makes your shots have an easier time going down. When Anthony has got rhythm and has confidence in his shot going, he’s as good of a shooter

as I’ve seen. He’s a senior, and usually that type of stuff happens at this time of the year.”

Anthony Marotta scored nine points in the opening quarter and finished with a game-high 25 points while hitting five 3-pointers and grabbing six rebounds.

Jon Marotta added nine points during the first half and wound up with 16 points for the Warriors (16-4, 8-2).

“We came out on Saturday and had a good practice,” Anthony Marotta said. “We focused on cutting hard to get open, and we found the open spots in the middle tonight. I’ve been shooting good in the first half of the past couple games but then been ice cold in the second; but in this game, I just put it together. I had the open shots, so I took them.”

West jumped out to a quick 17-5 lead and held a 17-10 advantage after the initial period. The Knights (4-17, 0-10) pulled to within 17-12 early in the second quarter, but the Warriors used an 8-0 run to help them build a 30-21 halftime advantage.

The Warriors, who also received six points from Max Petrungaro and eight assists and six rebounds from Marco Pettinato, grabbed a 45-29 lead after three quarters against Central, whom they beat for the third time this sea-

son.

Now, Flaherty and his team will set their focus on Friday’s key SWSC Red showdown with Thornton in New Lenox.

West lost a close game to the Wildcats earlier and needs a win to force a tie at the top of the league standings.

“This was the best game we’ve had together, with the other close one being the first time we played Lincoln-Way North when we combined for all of the points in the first half,” Jon Marotta said. “Friday’s game will be huge.

We went down 16-2 at their place and then came back and lost by two, so it will be a really good matchup.”

Central was paced

by Jarret Gmazel, who scored 10 points, while Brendan Flynn chipped in with seven points. Luke Newtoff (seven rebounds) and Mitch Kwasigroch (six rebounds) added six points each, while Mike Koszela contributed five rebounds.

“Sometimes, basketball is just a game of makes and misses, and they made them a lot more than we did,” Knights coach Bob Curran said. “They had eight 3s and we had two, and I felt like we had some of the same looks. But the Marotta brothers really hurt us, Anthony especially. They did a good job in the second half of swatting balls away inside.”

Its streak ends, but Lewis breezes to win SUBMITTED REPORTS PHOENIX, Ariz. – The No. 3-ranked Lewis men’s volleyball team picked up its eighth straight victory with a 3-1 win (26-24, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23) at Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match at Antelope Gymnasium.

Lewis’ loss in the second set broke a streak of 12 straight sets won by the Flyers (10-2, 2-0). It would have ended a set earlier in the first if not for a strong comeback from the Flyers. Lewis trailed Grand Canyon, 20-15, when the Flyers ripped off five straight points to tie the score at 20.

Despite the run, it was Grand Canyon (5-4, 0-2) first to set point at 24-22, but the Flyers weren’t to be denied. A Grand Canyon service error followed a Lewis timeout for point 23. A Grand Canyon attack error tied the score at 24.

The Antelopes took a timeout, but after the break, Geoff Powell and Bobby Walsh combined for a block to put the Flyers up.

Serving for the set, senior Greg Petty ripped an ace for point 26 and the win.

Lewis hit .346, with Scott Fifer recording 30 assists and Gert Lisha notching 20.

A trio of Flyers combined to get 54 of Lewis’ 63 kills. Eric Fitterer led with 20 while hitting .432. Powell put down 18 kills thanks to a .455 hitting percentage.

Petty finished with 16 kills.

Fitterer and Powell each were a dig short of a double-double by finishing with nine. They helped the Flyers outdig the Antelopes, 51-42, with senior libero Lucas Yanez recording a season-high 12.

Smith’s impact beyond UNC, basketball

By AARON BEARD The Associated Press Dean Smith accomplished so much on and off the court during his time as North Carolina’s coach, leaving a lasting influence both on the game and the world around him.

He preached the value of team play and turned the Tar Heels program into a family, inspiring fierce loyalty in the countless players and coaches who came through Chapel Hill during Smith’s 36-year tenure there. Away from the bench, Smith took stands on societal issues – most notably in civil rights – that resonated in the once-segregated South.

The retired Hall of Fame coach died “peacefully” Saturday, his family said in a statement released by the school Sunday. He had kept a lower profile amid health issues in recent years, with his family saying in 2010 he had a condition that was causing him to lose the memory that was once unshakable.

But his legacy never wavered. Here are some of the ways that Smith’s presence will be felt at UNC, in college basketball and beyond for years to come.

FOUR CORNERS: S e e i n g Smith hold up four fingers meant the Tar Heels were ready to work the clock. That “Four Corners” offense was a slowdown strategy to control the game and lure the defense out to chase the ball. Most notably, UNC went to it in the 1982 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament final against Virginia and 7-foot-4 Ralph Sampson and turned a game between highly ranked teams into a crawl – the kind of moment that ultimately helped lead to the adoption of the shot clock.

POINT TO THE PASSER: The rule was simple: when you score, point to the guy that passed you the ball to set up the basket. It was the epitome of Smith’s attempts to deflect credit for all those wins – 879, making him the sport’s winningest coach when he retired in October 1997 – to his play-

ers throughout his career.

CIVIL RIGHTS: Under Smith, Charles Scott became the first black scholarship athlete at the school in 1967 and one of the first in the South. It was just one example of why President Barack Obama honored Smith with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013, saying Smith “pushed forward” the civil rights movement.

But his efforts started early, with a teenage Smith even attempting – unsuccessfully at the time – to desegregate his high school basketball team in Topeka, Kansas. “He stood on solid footing, whether it was popular or not,” former UNC player Eric Montross said, “because he believed in it.”

SHAPING STARS: More than 50 of his players went on to play in the NBA or ABA – none bigger than Michael Jordan, who called Smith “my mentor, my teacher, my second father.” But the list of great players coached by Smith includes Phil Ford, James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty, Jerry Stackhouse,

Rasheed Wallace, Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison – not to mention many others who had lower-profile careers or played overseas. “There are so many things I could say about Coach Dean Smith,” Worthy tweeted Sunday, “but simply put, he is the greatest man I’ve ever known.”

COACHING TREE: Smith’s coaching tree of former players and assistants starts with a pair of Hall of Famers in current UNC coach Roy Williams and SMU coach Larry Brown. But there have been other disciples such as George Karl, Jeff Lebo and Eddie Fogler who have led college or pro teams in the years since Smith’s retirement. Still others, such as Mitch Kupchak, have gone on to NBA front-office jobs. And that means Smith’s legacy continues to last with many players who were too young to see him coach a game. “He gave me a chance – but more importantly, he shared with me his knowledge,” Williams said, “which is the greatest gift you can give someone.”

SAN DIEGO – Righthander James Shields, who helped Kansas City reach the World Series last season, has agreed to a $75 million, four-year contract with the San Diego Padres.

The deal includes an option for 2019 and is subject to the successful completion of a physical, which likely was to take place Tuesday.

Shields – who reportedly also had been sought by the Cubs – is the latest addition by first-year general manager A.J. Preller, who in December added sluggers Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil James Myers, as Shields well as Derek Norris and Will Middlebrooks.

Shields was traded from Tampa Bay to Kansas City two years ago in a deal in which Myers, then the Royals’ top prospect, was acquired by the Rays.

Shields was 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA last season and declined a $15.3 million qualifying offer from the Royals.

He lost both of his World Series starts, outdueled each time by Madison Bumgarner.

By signing Shields, the Padres lose their firstround pick, 13th overall, in June’s amateur draft.

The Royals get an extra pick after the first round.

Shields projects to lead a rotation that also includes Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner and Ian Kennedy. Several players will compete for the No. 5 spot during spring training.

An All-Star in 2011, Shields is 114-90 with a 3.72 ERA in nine seasons.

Switching to 3-4 defense would open some possibilities for Bears If it seems a bit unusual there have been no news conferences or interviews to introduce the Bears’ new coordinators, position coaches or director of player personnel, that’s because it is.

Apparently, this is the lull that follows the storm.

I assume the reason we’re waiting is because all of their time is being spent trying to determine exactly what the kitchen cabinets and fridge look like before it’s time to go shopping and compete for all the best new talent that is about to hit the market in free agency and the draft.

There is, however, one question we’d all really like to have answered now.

Are the Bears going to make the leap from a 4-3 base defense to a 3-4 under new coordinator Vic Fangio?

If we knew that, we could all be a lot more productive and have a lot more fun trying to figure out who the players will be.

Clearly, the Bears’ current personnel are best suited to a 4-3. That’s why they were brought in. And it’s not as if Fox and Fangio can’t coach it; both have, and have done it well.

But the 3-4 has been Fangio’s bread and butter of late, and at some point there is going to have to be a little pain to turn around one of the worst defenses in the NFL. If the Bears make the switch now, it is going to be difficult to find spots for Jared Allen, Willie Young, Lamarr

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Houston and several others; and it makes the re-signing of free agent Stephen Paea, who was their best defender last season, unlikely.

But are there any surprise ingredients lurking well down the Bears’ depth chart who might have some instant success and make the switch a tad less painful?

I think there just might be.

At 6-foot-4, 256 pounds and quick as a hiccup, David Bass was born to be an outside rush linebacker with serious double-digit sack potential.

Bass is an athlete and playmaker who needs to play in space but has had a hand stuck on the ground his first two years in the league.

Last season, he had three sacks, four quarterback hits and three QB hurries in 144 snaps. Forgetting that close to half of those snaps were run plays, that’s still one disruption every 14.4 snaps.

Willie Young had 10 sacks, five QB hits and 22 QB hurries in 683 snaps, one disruption every 18.5 snaps.

Bass had a sack once every 44 snaps, Young once every 68.3 snaps.

Christian Jones showed plenty of flashes to suggest he could be a playmaker outside in a 3-4 as well. And while Jon Bostic still looks lost in coverage most of the time, he

played the run well enough last season to argue he could be a nice fit as an inside backer in the 3-4.

There is no one else who sticks out inside unless you want to re-sign Darryl Sharpton and hope he can stay healthy; he’s good when he is, but with Allen, Young and maybe even Shea McClellin competing with Bass and Jones for those outside spots, the Bears might just be able to create some pressure.

The problem is, could they stop the run?

Although he is not the prototypical nose tackle in a 30 front, Jeremiah Ratliff not only played it in Dallas, he went to four straight Pro Bowls doing it.

It also seems possible Ego Ferguson might just be best suited for that spot after studying his rookie tape; and although he’s a lot smaller than you’d like, as well as he plays the run, Houston is worth a look at the five technique.

Granted, the Bears still need two starting safeties, help at defensive end and depth at cornerback, but they need all that to play a 4-3, too.

So tell us, guys, what are you going to do?

From where I sit, if the 3-4 is what Fangio does best, there’s no time like the present to give it a go.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Dr. Nafisa Burhani, with Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates in Joliet and Morris, said doctors have known about cancer genes for some time, but many of the clinical implications are being seen just now.

Burhani said our bodies have the ability to repair DNA when it is damaged, but sometimes mutations arise that impair that process, resulting in cancer. Testing is available for inherited genetic mutations in such cancers as breast, ovarian and colon, Burhani said.

“These are powerful tests,” Burhani said. “We can prevent cancer in some of these people who test positive.”

This knowledge of genetics is helping to lead to new cancer treatments. For instance, in December 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new treatment for certain types of ovarian cancer. Olaparib, which will be marketed as Lynparza, may cause cancer cells to die because it interferes with their ability to repair DNA. However, olaparib is only for women who test positive for the BRCA gene mutation and who have undergone three lines of chemotherapy, said Ron Rogers, executive vice president of corporate communications for Myriad Genetics Inc., based in Utah.

The FDA also approved a blood test called BRACAnalysis CDx, which finds BRCA gene mutations in potentially eligible patients, taking genetic testing to a new level, Rogers said.

Genetic testing also can tell people if they are more likely to develop a condition, said Kisha Johnson-Isidore, a geneticist with Myriad Genetics, who works with Burhani regarding conditions based on gene mutations.

Johnson-Isidore believes that is useful information to have.

“The point of genetic testing,” Johnson-Isidore said, “is that you can do something differently to decrease the risk of developing it or to manage it better if you have it.”

Just two years ago, Johnson-Isidore said, the cause of Kabuki syndrome – which is associated with developmental delays – was not known.

With a genetic technique called whole exome sequencing, the gene was found.

“There are more than 25,000 genes in our body that we know of, but we don’t know what the function of all of them are,” Johnson-Isidore said. “With the technology of five years ago, we could only look at one gene at a time.

Now with next-generation sequencing, we can look at panels of genes at a time. It’s very fast, very cheap and very accurate.”

Alive because of genetic test

Heather Meyer of rural Marseilles believes getting tested for the breast cancer gene saved her life. Meyer’s mother died from ovarian cancer; and then her sister, Jodi – after being diagnosed with breast cancer – urged Meyer

and several family members to undergo the testing.

Jodi died within a year of her diagnosis, but Meyer took her sister’s advice and learned she was positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation, Meyer said.

According to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer. org, BRCA are genes that everyone has and naturally suppress tumors. When one mutates, cancer is more likely to develop. There are hundreds of different BRCA mutations. Some raise the risk for breast, ovarian, pancreatic or stomach cancers.

Meyer decided to have a complete hysterectomy before cancer could develop. She and her husband previously decided not to have children.

During that appointment, the doctor found a lump in Meyer’s breast.

“It was about a week after my mother had died,” Meyer said. “It had already gone into one of my sentinel lymph nodes. This was an extremely aggressive type of cancer.”

It also was the same type her sister had. At the time of her sister’s diagnosis, the cancer had spread to 15 of her nodes, as well as her spine.

Meyer had a double mastectomy and eight rounds of chemotherapy in November 2008. Today, Meyer said, her health is good.

“The point of genetic testing is that you can do something differently to decrease the risk of developing it or to manage it better if you have it.”

Good bridge players have the funny habit of watching entries. Sometimes, though, the number of entries that you have in, say, the dummy, may affect not only your line of play but also the right way to handle a suit combination.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump, and West leads the club queen. How should declarer plan the play? In particular, how should he handle the heart suit? And would his method vary if he had a second dummy entry?

South, with no time or entries to work on diamonds, should try to take these nine tricks: three spades, three hearts, one diamond and two clubs.

But how should he go after those heart winners?

If declarer had sufficient dummy entries, he would play a heart to his ace and a heart back to dummy’s queen. The chance of success would be just over 22 percent.

Here, though, that will not work, due to a lack of a second dummy entry. Instead, South should hope that East has king-singleton or -doubleton in hearts, which, of course, is even less likely at just more than 9 percent. At trick two, declarer leads the heart eight (or nine) from the dummy and, unless covered, runs it.

With his layout, West takes the trick with his 10 and perseveres in clubs.

South wins with his king, cashes the heart ace to drop the king, and plays a heart to dummy’s nine (or eight). Yes, very lucky, but many would not take advantage of the good fortune. **

possible reasons for the protective effect. First, regular runners tend to weigh less. Second, running may stimulate cartilage to grow, not wear it out. Third, running builds strength in the leg muscles. Strong thigh muscles tend to cushion the joint by absorbing some of the pounding when you run.

What should you do now that you have arthritis? You should continue regular exercise of your legs to keep the thigh muscles strong. However, if you continue running, it might help to change your terrain. Softer running surfaces, such as a track at a local school, or a flat and smooth dirt trail, might be a little easier on your knees than running on a sidewalk or street.

If you have pain when you run, consider exercise that keeps leg muscles strong while reducing the impact on your joints. Swimming, cycling and an elliptical cross-trainer are good options.

There are exceptions to this general advice, and I’m one good example. When I was young, the thigh muscle in my right leg was split in a basketball accident. I was in a full-leg cast for months.

Thirty years of jogging on asphalt and concrete surfaces destroyed my right hip -- and I had to have a hip replacement.

My left hip was, and is, fine. With the benefit of hindsight, I should have switched to using a cross-trainer many years before I did.

I’ve jogged regularly for decades, but I’ve recently developed a touch of arthritis in my knees. Will continuing to run make my knees wear out faster?

Dear Reader: Having mild arthritis in the knees should not stop you from running. And, in case you were wondering, running probably did not create the problem in the first place.

Like all joints, the knee is where two bones meet. A tough, rubbery substance called cartilage covers the ends of bones. Cartilage serves as a cushion between two bones in a joint. Osteoarthritis causes cartilage to break down. (I’ve put an illustration showing the effects of osteoarthritis on the knee on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Osteoarthritis can appear in any joint. But the knee is particularly vulnerable because it is a weight-bearing joint that gets a lot of daily wear and tear over the years. Yet not every older person winds up with osteoarthritis.

Why do some people get osteoarthritis while others don’t? In part, it’s genetic. If your parents or grandparents had arthritis, you are at increased risk of developing it yourself.

Gender makes a difference: Women have a higher risk for osteoarthritis than men. Being overweight or obese also drives up risk. The extra weight puts more strain on the joints that must bear that weight.

The knees absorb a lot of force when running, so it’s natural to think that running itself can accelerate the natural wear on the joints. But in fact, running appears to have a protective effect against arthritis. Studies have shown that the average recreational runner has a lower risk of hip and knee arthritis.

Dear Abby: My niece had a baby a year after graduating from high school and is now raising her daughter as a single mom. After the first year, I told her that if there was anything she needed to let me know, but that I would rather contribute to a college fund for her daughter than send her toys for gift-giving holidays.

My niece was thrilled, so I set up a college savings account for her daughter and contribute to it monthly in lieu of birthday and Christmas gifts for them. However, when those gift-giving occasions come, I worry they may feel slighted when presents arrive from me for others. My niece and I never mentioned it to other family members.
