Before construction on the I&M Canal began, canal commissioners encouraged early settlers to move to the region and from communities. The end of the Black Hawk War brought a flood of adventures and speculators to the western frontier and, soon, land fever spread throughout the region.

Small towns, especially those situated on the banks of rivers, were laid out and fledgling enterprises along those marine routes were started.

The towns of Chicago and Ottawa were platted by the canal commissioners in 1830 to serve as both the gateway to the I&M Canal via the Chicago River and the western terminus on the Illinois River. By 1836, canal commissioners made the decision to locate the western terminus farther west, and the town of LaSalle was platted in 1838.

With fertile farmland and access to large-scale grain terminals in Chicago, towns and communities lay out along the I&M Canal, especially those in LaSalle County where grain facilities were numerous. Once the I&M Canal opened, the population of the county increased, and the town of LaSalle, with its steamboat basin, became a place of tremendous activity.

Grain elevators and warehouses lined the banks of the canal and river towns in Illinois in the 19th century.

In the early 1860s, John Armour, a prominent businessman in Ottawa, constructed a grain warehouse along the north bank of the I&M Canal

overlooking downtown Seneca. Rising four stories above its limestone foundation, the 65-foot-tall grain warehouse represents the oldest frame elevator still standing along the canal.

Today, the structure is known as the Seneca Grain Elevator, and in 1997, the building (Armour’s Warehouse) was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Acting class at Bicentennial Park offers youth theatrical opportunity

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Just as director Lori Carmine told the actors to get to their places two questions came up.

“Can I get a drink of water?”

“Can I go to the bathroom?

They’re the kind of questions an acting teacher might expect when her students are first grade through fifth.

But Carmine understands.

“When I was in first grade, I took classes here,” she said Saturday while getting ready for the first of two morning sessions in the theater at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park. An older group of students from sixth through 12th grades would come in the next session.

Most who go through the classes are not destined for careers in theater or film. But a few have been.

Carmine mentioned Anthony Rapp, Broadway and film actor who appeared in both the stage and movie versions of “Rent,” and Paul Dillon, a character actor in movies and TV, as two who have gone through the youth drama classes at Bicentennial Park.

“Paul Dillon started out as a gnome,” Carmine said, referring to the annual “Festival of Gnomes” performance at the theater during Christmastime.

Finding their niche

Bicentennial Park hosts six-week sessions of Class Act drama classes in the fall and winter. Summertime OnStage is held for four weeks in June and July.

“Parents have told me how shy their kids were. Then they get onstage, and they’re completely different,” Carmine said. “Theater is a great place for people to find their niche. It’s an even playing field.”

Bill Hogan brought his 10-year-old son, Reid, to the class Saturday. His older daughter had been in the classes but since became more interested in music, Hogan said.

“At this point in life, [Reid] really enjoys doing this. Lori does a nice job. The kids have a lot of fun,” Hogan said. “You’ve got to give your kids a chance to try everything, so they can find the right thing.”

Matthew Lanoue of Channahon was at Bicentennial Park with his daughter, Paige, 11, and said, “It’s just

fun to watch the little kids – first graders to older ones. You can tell the kids that have done it for years and years.

They help out the younger ones.”

Besides the fun, Lanoue believes the children get good training on breathing, diction and memory.

“They have to learn some long

lines,” he said.

Potential talent

At the end of the six-session class, the children will perform “The White Spider’s Gift,” a one-act play based on a South American folktale.

Carmine talked with two of the

boys, who were to perform a fight scene.

“Do I win?” was 7-year-old Cooper Ores’ question.

Asked later what he likes about the class, Cooper simply replied, “It’s fun.”

But his father, Jim Ores, said the class feeds an interest Cooper shows at home.

“He’s got a lot of ideas,” said Ores.

“He’s got more costumes than anybody. He likes wearing them.”

Throwback for Rialto’s 90th anniversary Festivities will have a nod to its movie house days with ‘Mary Poppins’

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre’s 90th anniversary festivities will include a throwback to the theater’s era as a movie house.

“Mary Poppins,” the Disney classic that many in Joliet may have seen at the Rialto after it was released in 1964, will play again on a May 19 movie night.

It may not be the only movie played at the Rialto this year.

The Rialto typically runs a holiday-themed movie during the Light Up the Holidays festivities that take place the Friday after Thanksgiving every year downtown.

And Rialto staff are considering putting more movies on the Rialto schedule.

Jack Ericksen, hired in late December as development director for the theater, told the Rialto board last week that movies may be another way to attract people to the theater.

“There’s been a lot of suggestions that people would like to see movies here,” Ericksen said.

Later, Ericksen mentioned that he was even approached by someone suggesting a showing of “Mary Poppins” at the Rialto after the theater had already made the decision to do so. The movie was released Aug. 27, 1964, and

No decision has been made, but Ericksen said one possibility is showing movies on a quarterly basis. Showing a movie during May, when the Rialto celebrates its 90th anniversary, recognizes that film favorites such as “Mary Poppins” are part of people’s memories of the theater.

“I think it’s important to get people into the theater and experiencing the theater,” he told the board. “Hopefully, that will lead to other things.”

Also on schedule in May for the Rialto 90th anniversary celebration are: • May 5 – Performance by Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill • May 14 – “Roaring Rialto: A 1926 Speakeasy,” the main event for the an-

niversary runs from 7 to 11 p.m. and includes food, open bar and live music with tickets at $90 a person • May 19 – Movie night showing of “Mary Poppins” • May 24 – Artrageous, a combination of musical performances with art exhibits that ends with an art auction • May 26 – Rialto hosts an after-hours meeting for the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

him about 50 yards down Jackson Street before it was driven away again. Medina-Valdez was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

“It’s still unclear if [Medina-Valdez] was with the group leaving the bar or the group in the parking lot,” Gregory said Sunday afternoon.

Gregory said investigators had a vehicle description, but declined to release that information Sunday. According to witnesses, no one involved was armed but the driver who fled.

“There’s been a lot of investigation. It’s very active,” he said.

About 3 a.m., a silver Dodge Neon was traveling north on County Line Road near Black Road when the vehicle drifted into the gravel on the east side of the road, came back and crossed over to the west side of the road, according to Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

“It jumped the curb, hit a tree, hit a telephone line box and a second tree – flipping over several times,” Gregory said. “It then went through a fence into a backyard and came to rest upright.”

Gregory said the Neon was in the backyard of a house in the 900 block of Hudson Drive in the Kearney Glen subdivision.

“The residents woke up and saw the driver check on the passenger, who was unconscious, then climb out through the window and jump their fence to get out to the 900 block of Hudson,” Gregory said.

Other neighbors chased the driver, who Gregory identified as Timothy Griffin, 24, until police arrived and took him into custody. Griffin was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Gregory said. After a blood draw was performed at the hospital, officers reported Griffin would be charged with driving under the influence once he was released.

The passenger was identified by the Will County Coroner’s Office as John J. Burns, 24, of Plainfield. Burns also was taken to Saint Joseph where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. An autopsy performed Sunday showed preliminary findings of multiple injuries, but the final cause of death is pending police, autopsy and toxicology reports, according to the coroner’s office.

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet man dies after being run down in bar fight

JOLIET – Police say a fight outside a bar led to a fatal crash early Sunday.

Officers were called at 2:02 a.m. when shots were reported outside El Rodeo Bar, 816 E. Jackson St., according to Deputy Chief Ed Gregory.

“Two men and two women were leaving the bar as it closed and encountered a group of six to eight men in the parking lot,” Gregory said. “They began an argument and one of the men who’d been in the parking lot went back to his vehicle and began shooting.”

As everyone scattered, the driver returned but lost control coming around the block and struck a fence and “rocked it free,” Gregory said.

vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Carillon Lakes resident Nancy Yendrejcyzk keenly remembers her service dog-in-training, Waylon, sensing her daughter’s stress and snuggling up next to her.

That’s when she started to feel like Waylon could help people who have psychological disorders, such as depression.

“He can really sense stress,” Yendrejcyzk said. “I’m thinking he could help those with post-traumatic stress disorder.”

Yendrejcyzk signed up as a “puppy raiser,” and received Waylon – now 18 months old – as a 6-month-old pup on Dec. 1, 2014.

Waylon is an ambassador dog for Mokena-based nonprofit Heartland Service Dogs. But he has become a celebrity at Carillon Lakes, a retirement community in Crest Hill.

“Everybody knows Waylon,” Yendrejcyzk said, adding that she takes him many places to get accustomed to people. “The story group people love to see him. And he loves greeting people at [Bingo].”

But Thursday night, those residents got to see five other furry friends

join Waylon in showing off their obedience and skills.

Waylon performed his feature trick Thursday night, picking up a bag by himself and handing it to different people. He also endured a slippery floor as he obeyed commands to stay sitting and lay down for an extended time, and other useful orders.

Other service dogs turned on and off light switches, and detected blood sugar levels in diabetic patients.

“A lot of kids are Type 1 diabetics and parents are paralyzed with fear [about their kids’ sugar levels dropping],” Heartland Director Linda Fox said.

Heartland was started by Fox and her husband in 2011. The organization is volunteer-run and provides specially trained dogs for those with mobility, hearing, diabetic and PTSD challenges. Heartland is always looking for more volunteers and donations, Fox said.

Yendrejcyzk said eventually Waylon’s training will be complete, and he’ll partner with an individual in need.

“It will be bittersweet,” Yendrejcyzk said. “The hardest part of all this is realizing that I’m just training him and he’ll go to someone else. But that’s why we do this.”

Joliet School District 86 Will County Farm Bureau to give $50K in scholarships seeking magnet applications VIEWS Kris Stadalsky The Will County Farm Bureau, through its foundation, will be giving out $50,000 in scholarships again this year; 28 to high school seniors and 22 to students in continuing education.

Member Jerry Davidson of Minooka has been a Will County Farm Bureau member for more than 35 years. He brought the idea of educational scholarships to the bureau in 1986. The foundation was created for that purpose, he said.

The farm bureau donated $1,000 to the foundation as seed money in 1987.

One $500 scholarship was awarded that first year, with the rest of the funds put in the bank to help grow the program.

Davidson is a landowner and has farmed most of his life. His family moved to Minooka before he was 2.

They farmed corn and soybeans and had dairy cows for 20 years until the mid-1980s. He retired from farming in 2000.

Davidson served on the farm bureau board for 12 years, four as president. He now chairs the Governmental Affairs Committee.

“The night I retired [from the board], I thought I would just work on the foundation,” Davidson said. “They said I needed another job.”

The Will County Farm Bureau has 1,200 farm/landowner members and more than 12,000 insurance members.

There are 88 farm bureaus in Illinois.

Their purpose, according to the Will County Farm Bureau website, is to advocate on behalf of members, reach out to the non-farming community to share the benefits of modern agriculture, and work with local farmers and ranchers to improve the natural environment

and productivity of their land.

All the money for educational scholarships, which go to Will County Farm Bureau members and their children, is raised through fundraising and donations.

The scholarships are an added value for members and membership has grown because of them, said Will County Farm Bureau manager Mark Schneidewind.

About $20,000 is raised at the bureau’s annual meeting through a silent auction and raffles. The 102nd meeting was held last Saturday.

Besides fundraising, members can choose to donate to the foundation when they pay annual dues. The bureau also received a gracious gift of 18 acres of land, which it sold and made $203,000. The only stipulation from the donor was that only 5 percent of the money be used yearly.

“That money will last us 20 years,” Davidson said.

Fifty of the scholarships this year will be for $1,000 each and two will be for $1,200 for students studying to be agriculture teachers.

The foundation also supports the University of Illinois Extension, which provides educational programs and information, and the Ag in the Classroom program, providing agricultural awareness and education for students, teachers and the general public.

Since the first scholarship was awarded, the Will County Farm Bureau has given out 455 educational scholarships, totaling $455,600.

JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 officials are seeking applications for district magnet schools for the 2016-17 school year.

All schools are within the Joliet public school system with no additional fees, and all student applicants must reside within the boundaries of District 86, according to a district news release.

The magnet schools include: Eisenhower Academy, Forest Park Individual Education School, Hufford Junior High Individual Education program and Washington Junior High Academy program.

Eisenhower Academy includes grades first through fifth and Washington Junior High Academy includes grades sixth through eighth. Both accept students who demonstrate average or above-average academic achievement and positive behavior.

Parents must commit to the academy philosophy that includes the Four-

Way Learning Agreement.

There are 56 openings for first grade and a limited number of openings for grades second through eighth.

Parents should call 815-723-0233 for Eisenhower Academy and 815-727-5271 for Washington.

Eisenhower applications are due March 16, but neither Washington nor Forest Park and Hufford have a deadline.

The Forest Park and Hufford programs offer education based on the Adlerian individual psychology. The schools are founded on Raymond Corsini’s four Rs of responsibility, respectfulness, resourcefulness and responsiveness.

Parents must commit to the school’s philosophy and attend parenting sessions.

Fort Wayne Bible College in Indiana, where she and other students played for area churches, Eric said.

Lily experimented with the autoharp during the years she and Eric, who owns several dulcimers, attended an annual dulcimer festival at Gebhard Woods in Morris, Eric said. She played music at home and attended concerts with Eric.

In fact, an impromptu concert preceded their wedding ceremony.

Eric said he had left the house wearing gym shoes, never noticing his mistake until he was near the

church. Still, Eric drove back for the correct shoes.

“We had a wonderful organist who just kept playing all these songs,” Eric said, “and we have an old cassette with the 45-minute prelude.”

The couple moved to Joliet in 1977 when their son, James, was a year old because Eric had become the librarian at the Channahon branch of the Three Rivers Public Library District.

Lily sang in the choir at Judson Memorial Baptist Church in Joliet and in the Joliet Junior College Community Chorale. She occasionally sang solos and she even directed a children’s choir, Eric said.

When James was older, she worked at jobs that included Kmart, a doctor’s office and the nursing home now known as Symphony of Joliet.

Eric said Lily was working in medical records at Stateville Correctional Center when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. She fought it

Women ages 16 to 19, as well as those enrolled at a college or university, are encouraged to apply by April 1 for the Young Women in Public Affairs and Jane M. Klaussman Scholarship awards that are sponsored by the Zonta Club of Joliet, an organization that works to advance the status of women.

JOLIET – Eric Blomstedt of Joliet recalled his first date with Lily, the woman who would become his wife.

They had gone to the Art Institute of Chicago and were walking in Grant Park when Eric noticed Lily was limping, so he asked if she was all right.

“She said, ‘Well, I have an artificial leg,’ ” Eric said.

Lily had a congenital bone disorder commonly known as brittle bone disease. The problem became noticeable when Lily was 3 and living in Belgium with her parents.

Before the amputation, Lily experience a series of unsuccessful operations, breaks below the knee and a donated bone from her mother, Valentina Yackich.

“And that broke, too,” Eric said.

The disability never limited Lily.

Three passions defined her: music, abiding love for family and a deep faith in Jesus Christ, all of which bonded her and Eric. Unbeknownst to each other at the time of their first date, both Lily’s family and Eric’s family immigrated to Chicago in 1956 – Lily’s family from Belgium and Eric’s from Sweden.

From childhood, Lily played piano.

She “picked up” the flute when she was a Christian education student at

bravely until her death Jan. 9 at age 66, even performing with the chorale one last time in December, Eric said.

Where did Lily find such strength and courage? Her faith, nurtured from childhood in the living example of Valentina and lived in every aspect of her life.

In a 2012 “An Extraordinary Life” column about Valentina, a concentration camp survivor, Lily said her mother, at age 13, saw Russian police take away her father, later shot to death in a forest on Christmas Day. The Russian army also drafted her older brother. Another was forced into a Russian labor camp. Valentina’s mother fled to the woods and left her children alone at home in the dark. Those experiences only shaped and strengthened Valentina’s faith.

“She always knew God was in control,” Lily said, “that he loved us and cared for us.”

Eric feels that same God walked with Lily every step of her cancer battle, too.

“I have every faith that once she died and left that frail emaciated body at hospice,” Eric said, “her soul went to be with the Lord and she’s rejoicing in his presence.”

Officer removed from streets after shooting

CHICAGO – Chicago police said an officer involved in a shooting that left one dead will be shifted to administrative duties.

Police said Sunday they received calls of an armed person and a home invasion around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Authorities said “shots were exchanged” with police and a weapon was recovered.

No officers were injured.

An Independent Police Review Authority spokesman told The Chicago Tribune that the male victim was pronounced dead inside a South Side home.

A police spokesman said the officer will be taken off the streets for at least 30 days, a new policy after the release of a video showing an officer fatally shooting a teenager 16 times.

The Tribune reported that the shooting happened at an address listed as the childhood home of Bulls star Derrick Rose. WBBM-TV reports at least two other families have since lived there.

Report: Chicago schools CEO hires former donors

CHICAGO – A newspaper report said about six people who were donors or former colleagues to Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool are working for the district.

The Chicago Tribune also reported that two companies with Claypool ties are eligible for $14 million in professional services work through 2018.

The report comes as the district has announced hundreds of central office employee layoffs.

Youth program drops military tone

FOX LAKE – An official in Fox Lake said a police-sponsored youth program that an officer is accused of stealing from before killing himself will return without the military style of its past.

The Explorer program was disbanded following the September death of Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz, with officials noting its military tone and his alleged mismanagement. Authorities said he staged his suicide to look like a homicide because he feared discovery of the embezzlement from the program. On Wednesday, Gliniewicz’s widow, Melanie Gliniewicz, was indicted on charges she helped divert money from the program.

Teenagers in the program led by Gliniewicz went through sniper drills and staged SWAT raids, sometimes wearing camouflage fatigues, the Chicago Tribune reported. Other Chicago-area groups also teach similar skills, although the Fox Lake group struck a particularly aggressive tone, the newspaper said.

Antioch Chief Steve Huffman said the use of force in policing is a “necessary evil” and that it’s important to teach kids aspiring to become officers all the elements of the job.

Peter Kraska, a professor at Eastern Kentucky University’s School of Justice Studies, said the Fox Lake chapter’s conduct mirrors a broader trend for police.

Group of cops cost $34M in settlements

CHICAGO – A group of 124 Chicago police officers has cost the city $34 million in misconduct settlements since 2009, according to a newspaper report.

While the officers represent a fraction of the police force’s roughly 12,000 officers, they are identified in nearly a third of the misconduct lawsuits settled since 2009. The Chicago Tribune reported one officer had seven lawsuits against him that were settled.

Unlike high-profile police brutality cases that have triggered federal investigations, most of the settlements involve less-serious claims such as injuring arrestees during traffic stops, making false arrests and using racial slurs. The lawsuits largely have escaped City Council scrutiny because the settlements have been at or under $100,000. If they’re larger, aldermen must approve them.

Also, the Tribune found many of the incidents didn’t occur in high-crime areas as union officials have argued, and officers rarely were disciplined. A Chicago police spokesman acknowledged it has been a decades-old problem.

SPRINGFIELD – The Friday afternoon email read with remarkable alacrity, given its message: The trip to a Springfield store to buy all-purpose Fabuloso Cleaner for the Secretary of State’s Office was for naught.

“They would not sell to us because we are shut off due to lack of payment,” the storeroom worker wrote to his boss and others. “Have a great weekend!”

As Illinois politicians continue to squabble over a budget that should have taken effect July 1, hundreds of state contractors have been left with little more than IOUs, according to more than 500 pages of documents – just since Nov. 1 – released to The Associated Press under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. From a $28.44 late-notice water and sewer bill at the 1848 Mount Pulaski Courthouse – which had neither when Abraham Lincoln practiced law there – to $4.8 million that Illinois owes Michigan for a health partnership, vendors have flooded the Capitol with disconnect warnings, credit-hold notices, desperate pleas and even a frowny face stamp in an effort to get paid.

The state owes $2 million to Ashley’s Quality Care in Chicago, which provides in-home care workers to keep seniors out of nursing homes, according to chief accountant Michael Robinson.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, insistent on pro-business changes to boost commerce, can’t agree on an annual spending plan with Democrats who control the Legislature. They oppose his conservative agenda, saying a multibillion-dollar deficit needs tax-increase and spending-cut triage.

Billions of dollars continue to be spent on services ordered by federal court orders or limited legislative action, but the lack of spending authority means bureaucrats are spending more time dealing with angry vendors. • An Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission arbitrator’s personalized date-stamp broke, but it wasn’t replaced because the supplier was awaiting $511.06 that was past due.

• A New Jersey landlord threatened to evict Illinois Revenue Department tax auditors from their rented home in that state unless he received five months’ rent totaling $37,936.20. It was paid.

Best friend Misha Dockins told the newspaper that Wiley lived alone, relied on the city bus system instead of driving and overcame a learning disability to obtain a two-year degree. She was killed while studying for a bachelor’s degree.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – From sounding duck calls to predicting the weather, presidential contenders are blanketing Iowa in a final frenzy to close the deal before Monday’s Iowa caucuses begin the formal process of choosing President Barack Obama’s successor.

Republican Donald Trump, campaigning with his wife, Melania, and pregnant daughter, Ivanka, continued his attacks on Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. The two men lead polls of likely caucus-goers. Trump also predicted that “many” senators “soon” would endorse him rather than their Texas colleague.

Trump didn’t name any such senators, and none immediately emerged.

Cruz, meanwhile, campaigned on the eve of the caucuses with conservative media firebrand Glenn Beck and “Duck Dynasty” cable TV star Phil Robertston.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who is running third, pitched

himself as the pragmatic choice for Republicans who want to win in November.

In a deadlocked Democratic race, Hillary Clinton stuck to her message that she is the most experienced and most electable candidate, as she tries to stave off insurgent candidate Bernie Sanders.

The Vermont senator looked to build on his apparent momentum, as he appeared before enthusiastic crowds the same afternoon that his campaign announced it raised more than $20 million in January, a sign that he will continue to match Clinton’s considerable resources.

One development – the weather – was beyond the candidates’ control. Snowfall forecast to start Monday night appeared more likely to hinder the hopefuls in their rush out of Iowa than the voters going to caucus. Republican John Kasich already has decamped to New Hampshire.

Iowa offers only a small contingent of the delegates who will determine the nominees, but the game of expectations counts for far more than the electoral math in

the state. Campaigns worked aggressively to set those expectations in their favor for Iowa, the Feb. 9 primary in New Hampshire and beyond.

The one agreement among all candidates: The outcome will boil down to turnout, and they’re trying to make whatever argument they can to ensure their supporters, perhaps, a few last-minute deciders, show up Monday night.

At an afternoon rally in Iowa City, Cruz urged voters to bring 10 of their friends to caucus on Monday. “We can’t roll the dice,” he said.

On the airwaves, Cruz focused his final offensive on Rubio. One ad says the Florida senator is the candidate of “tax hikes” and “amnesty” and described him as “the Republican Obama.”

Rubio has taken his own shots, particularly as he and Cruz joust over who is more conservative on immigration. But the Florida senator also tries to position himself above the fray, arguing he’s the best hope for Republicans to defeat the Democratic nominee in November.

Disparate response to Zika for Brazil’s rich and poor

RIO DE JANEIRO – Two Brazilian women, two pregnancies, one nightmare. But two different stories.

Regina de Lima and Tainara Lourenco became pregnant at a scary moment – the dawn of an extraordinary Zika outbreak, as authorities came to suspect that the virus was causing an alarming spike in a rare birth defect called microcephaly. Both have reason to fear for the health of their unborn offspring. But that is where the similarities end.

Lima is well-off, and took advantage of the options of affluence.

Lourenco lives in a slum. She has no options, except to hope for the best.

When Lima learned she was pregnant, her initial, vertiginous rush of happiness was almost immediately smothered by dread.

Lima and her husband had been trying to start a family, but decided to put the project on hold in late November, after the Brazilian government announced a possible link between mosquito-borne Zika and microcephaly, in which infants are born with unusually small heads and can sometimes suffer mental retardation or a host of serious health and developmental problems.

Officials:Boko Haram burns kids alive in Nigeria, 86 dead

DALORI, Nigeria – A survivor hidden in a tree said he watched Boko Haram extremists firebomb huts and heard the screams of children burning to death, among 86 people officials say died in the latest attack by Nigeria’s homegrown Islamic extremists.

Scores of charred corpses and bodies with bullet wounds littered the streets from Saturday night’s attack on Dalori village and two nearby camps housing 25,000 refugees, according to survivors and soldiers at the scene just 3 miles from Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and the biggest city in Nigeria’s northeast.

The shooting, burning and explosions from three suicide bombers con-

tinued for nearly four hours in the unprotected area, survivor Alamin Bakura said, weeping on a telephone call to The Associated Press. He said several of his family members were killed or wounded.

The violence continued as three female suicide bombers blew up among people who managed to flee to neighboring Gamori village, killing many people, according to a soldier at the scene who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists.

Troops arrived at Dalori around 8:40 p.m. Saturday but were unable to overcome the attackers, who were better armed, said soldiers who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press. The Boko Haram fighters only retreated after reinforcements arrived

with heavier weapons, they said.

Journalists visited the carnage Sunday and spoke to survivors who complained it had taken too long for help to arrive from nearby Maiduguri, the military headquarters of the fight to curb Boko Haram. They said they fear another attack.

Eighty-six bodies were collected by Sunday afternoon, according to Mohammed Kanar, area coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency. Another 62 people are being treated for burns, said Abba Musa of the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.

Boko Haram has been attacking soft targets, increasingly with suicide bombers, since the military last year drove them out of towns and villages in northeastern Nigeria.

Witness to migrant disaster that killed 37 describes screams

AYVACIK, Turkey – A witness to the drowning of 37 people including babies and other young children off Turkey’s coast described the horror and screams in the moments after the boat carrying the migrants slammed into rocks, saying it was like “somebody was being murdered.”

Gulcan Durdu, who lives on the beach in the Aegean resort of Ayvacik, cried Sunday while recounting for The Associated Press the tragedy that happened at dawn the previous day.

She described being awakened by screaming and wailing after the boat struck rocks and capsized.

“I thought somebody was being murdered,” Durdu told the AP. Durdu said she and her husband rushed to try to help survivors and brought a boy to their home to try to warm him up.

“We wrapped him up (in blankets),” she said. “I brought the hair dryer to ‘warm.’ The boy became limp in my arms” before losing consciousness.

The boy was still alive when she handed him over to paramedics who had arrived, Durdu said, adding that she would be haunted by the tragedy forever.

“I will never stop hearing those cries for the rest of my life,” Durdu said. “I will never forget. It was terrible. They died screaming. It was dark.

“We were only able to save those who were able to swim ashore.”

On Sunday, the overturned boat was still sitting on rocks offshore and visible from the construction site where Durdu lives. The beach was littered with grim reminders of the disaster, including lifejackets, a child’s sandal, clothing and other personal belongings that had washed onshore.

The migrants were trying to make the short journey from Turkey to Greece.

Images of dead children on a beach on Saturday were another soul-searing reminder that Europe’s migrant crisis keeps destroying lives and families by the day. The body of one boy was lying on large rocks on the beach, his face covered by a cloth, while the faces of other bodies scattered nearby were covered with lifejackets.

They recalled the photo of 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi lying face down on a Turkish beach last year. His story put an intimate face on the Syrian refugee crisis for people across the world, prompting many to finally grapple with the magnitude of the suffering caused by the war in the Middle East and the treacherous journeys many risk seeking shelter in Europe.

IN-TOWN RIVALRY AT ITS BEST Joliet West, Joliet Central provide plenty of reasons for optimism The game of the year.

Judging from the size of the crowd that showed up Friday night to watch Joliet West take on Joliet Central in the Steelmen’s gym, it could be considered just that.

“Roger loved every second of seeing this gym so full,” West coach Nick DiForti said afterward, speaking of his right-hand man, assistant coach Roger Plechaty. “I asked him if it reminded him of anything.”

Plechaty formerly was an assistant coach in the Joliet Township combined program, when boys basketball games were played at Central. Back in those days, there occasionally were crowds that rivaled the 2,500 or so that were estimated to be on hand Friday.

VIEWS Dick Goss “We haven’t seen this size of crowd here since 2002,” said Central coach Jeff Corcoran, who also is a former assistant in the combined program.

“Hopefully, this will carry over when we go to their place in a month.”

The players noticed as well.

“I loved the atmosphere,” West guard Teyvion Kirk said. “The city supported us all the way.”

And this from Central forward Jose Grubbs: “It was great for the city and for both teams. It was a great environment to play in.”

The game was a good one between two quick, athletic teams, with good defense being a calling card for both sides.

West, which improved to 13-6 overall and 4-3 in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, hit the decisive free throws late to secure a 58-51 victory.

What stood out, in addition to the size of the crowd, was how competitive both teams can be even when one of their leaders suffers an off night shooting.

In the case of West, Trevian Bell, who came in averaging more than 14 points, was limited to five. That says something about the game turned in

by Central’s 6-foot-2 senior forward Malik Fuller, who guarded the 6-4 Bell much of the night.

But while Bell hit only 2 of 9 shots, he was huge on the defensive end.

“Trevian didn’t score, but he altered so many shots at the rim,” DiForti said. “That’s a lot of maturity on his part. It really helps when your leading scorer gets five points and you win.”

Fuller was 2 of 13 from the floor and was limited to eight points as Bell and his teammates around the basket did a masterful job getting their hands on putback attempts while avoiding fouling. But even if that goes into the books as an off night offensively for Fuller, what can you say about a kid who grabs 19 rebounds and holds Bell to five points?

“Fuller is awesome,” DiForti said. “Any coach in our conference, in the state, would want to have a kid like him. He and Grubbs are really good players.”

“Malik is a warrior,” Corcoran said of Fuller. “He is a force on the boards. He’s a ballhawk and our best defender.”

Grubbs, meanwhile, picked up the offensive slack for Central (10-8, 5-2), scoring a game-high 21 points. He had 13 in the first half and was silent much of the second half before scoring six more in the final 1:19.

“We didn’t do anything special to slow down Grubbs in the second half,” DiForti noted. “We had to get five guys playing defense together. It was more of a team thing.”

Much like with Grubbs, Bell’s offensive prowess is no secret, either.

“Teams send their best guys at him,” said Kirk, who hit five free throws in the final 1:07 and led the Tigers with 13 points. “Our big guys did a good job stepping up in the post and scoring in the

Tigers look to make history at state tourney

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With only six seniors on its squad and nearly twice that many freshmen and sophomores, Joliet West’s competitive cheerleading team faced a few obstacles in order to earn the school’s sixth-straight trip to the IHSA finals.

But not only are the Tigers headed to this weekend’s competition at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, they advanced with the third-best sectional score in the large team division.

Coach Amy DiForti’s squad posted a 92.13 score to finish second to Lockport (93.2) in the sectional that West hosted. The only other squad to put up a better number than the Tigers was Providence Catholic (92.7), which won the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional title.

After not being in the mix at last year’s state meet, the Tigers again have a realistic shot at becoming the first program from their school to earn a state trophy since the return of the two district programs. West’s girls sports have only won three trophies.

The Tigers have been close before

in this sport, finishing just .22 points behind Providence for third in 2014.

They’re hoping their luck is better on this trip after faring better at the sectional than teams that were third (Neuqua Valley) and sixth (Sandburg) a year ago.

Seniors Daniella Casillas-Perez, Tyeler Delrose, Amina Lee, Carolina Soto, Brandy Teague and Brittney Wooldridge realize a strong showing and possible state trophy could lead to continued success over the next few years for their program.

“Not many teams here have had the chemistry that our team has,” Delrose said. “It’s thanks to our underclassmen, who’ve really stepped up. The eighth graders who became freshmen are amazing and they make us who we are. We’re strange and say a lot of weird things to each other. But it’s fun and we’re always laughing and there’s never a dull moment.”

On a day where where everyone seemed to be having fun, including Tigers A.D. Steve Millsaps, who donned a garish gold jacket throughout, West performed great.

“It’s a lot of fun and I just love being with my team all of the time,” Lee

said. “Having good vibes with each other is what keeps us going. Going out on the mat, we’re just having fun and yelling for each other and that’s what gets us through it. I love how a freshman can push a senior since we have so much chemistry and we love each other so much.”

One of the biggest keys for the team is its close bond, that’s why the Tigers are so upbeat about their chances as they get ready for their trip to Bloomington.

“I love my team so much so hearing that we got second and getting a chance to go to state again gives me chills thinking about it,” Casillas-Perez said. “We saw great competition so it’s nice to know that we’re up there with them. I have one brother and a bunch of sisters and they’re all family to me and they love me and I love them, too, which is nice.”

The strong sectional showing has shown that the Tigers can perform well under pressure, which they’ll have to do against the state’s best this weekend.

“I’m excited about getting second place because it puts us in a really good spot for our competition next

week,” Soto said. “I feel like we’re very prepared for it and we have a whole week to progress and get even better than we are. I think we’re capable of anything that will be thrown at us. What I like most about our team is that we’re reliable and capable.”

And being able to go to state keeps the close group together for one more competition, where they hope to turn in their best performance yet.

“I’m really happy that we qualified for state because that means that I have one more week left with the family that we’ve created through this whole season,” Teague said. “We want to perform strong at state this year. I like the chemistry that we have. We all became really close and we’re like sisters, so every time I’m with them, it’s like my second family.”

Even a newcomer to the squad knows what a special group the Tigers have this season.

JOLIET – When Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and vice president and general manager Jed Hoyer interviewed Joe Maddon for the Cubs managerial position last offseason, they enjoyed a unique experience.

“We drove down to Florida and met Joe in his RV in a lot in Pensacola, Florida,” Hoyer related during his appearance Thursday as guest speaker at the University of St. Francis Brown & Gold athletic fundraiser in the Sullivan Center.

“He put up four folding chairs on the small beach that was there for us and him and his wife, and we talked.

Then we took separate cars to dinner.

“I said, ‘This guy is unbelievable.’

It was clear he was the right guy for us. He was such a grand slam.”

Hoyer said the 97-win season of 2015, which has changed the culture surrounding the Cubs, never would have happened without Maddon’s touch.

“Had I been here one year ago, I’m not sure what I would have said about the upcoming season,” Hoyer said.

“We were 32-29 the last two months of 2014, but we we knew we had to change directions, change the culture.”

So the Cubs brought in veteran pitcher Jon Lester, outfielder Dexter Fowler and catcher Miguel Montero last offseason.

“Even so, we weren’t so sure,” Hoyer said. “Candidly, there is no way we would have expected to happen what happened in 2015. To me, it would be impossible to have that conversation without thinking about Joe Maddon.”

Hoyer said there are times when luck is involved in a team’s success.

“We never could have anticipated Joe Maddon would be available to us,” he said. “The confidence and credibility he brought from Day 1 was amazing. Early on, when we’d play teams like the Cardinals and Pirates, he said, ‘Jed, we can play with them.’

He saw what we were before any of us saw it.”

The Cubs were seven games over .500 at the All-Star break and had played a tough schedule to that point.

“We came out of the All-Star break and were terrible,” Hoyer said. “We should have been 0-9 with the way we played, but we somehow managed to win three games, and that turned us around. We swept the Giants, won 16 of 17 and never looked back. The character of the group of guys and Joe allowed us to avoid disaster.”

The Cubs went into Pittsburgh late in the season and won three of four, and indications were they likely would face the Pirates in the onegame playoff to open the postseason.

“We were on the plane returning home, and our young guys were talking, ‘If we beat the Pirates,’ ” Hoyer said. “Jake Arrieta got up in the back of the plane and said, ‘If you guys get us to the one-game playoff, I guarantee you we will beat the Pirates.’ And that’s what happened.

“The Pittsburgh game is one of my three, four or five best memories. It was a big springboard for the Cubs.

Had we lost that game, we would have looked at the season differently. Of course, it also underscored why we

have to strive to win our division. A one-game playoff in baseball is a coin flip.”

After the victory over the Pirates, next up was the NL Division Series against St. Louis.

“We could not have played much better,” Hoyer said. “That’s when our young guys arrived.

“Then came the Mets series, which was as painful as the Cardinals series was great. The Mets played as well as anyone could have played against us.”

CONSISTENCY THE KEY

Nobody is going to reach the World Series, or win it, every year.

But if you are in the playoffs regularly, you have to feel your time will come.

“You have to plan to get back to the playoffs every year, and if you do, you’re going to win a World Series sometime,” Hoyrer said. “That Mets series reminds me that you have to do it every year.”

The Cubs played beyond expectations last season. Now the bar is set much higher.

“There is something magical about not having high expectations and then having a good season,” he said.

“Now we have to crank out good team after good team.”

ers and the offseason additions of free agents John Lackey, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist, the Cubs are in position to accomplish that goal for the next several years.

“We accumulated talent through losing through the draft and spending the hard-earned money of the Ricketts family,” Hoyer said. “I think this is the start of something special. We signed four free agents [including pitcher Trevor Cahill, who was a Cub in 2015], and all four took less money to come to the Cubs than they could have gotten elsewhere.

“Normally, when you sign free agents, they are in the decline phase of their career. But Heyward is a day younger than Anthony Rizzo. Add him to that young group that we had, that’s our core.”

Hoyer said that entering this season, it feels as if the wind is at the Cubs’ back. The snowball is rolling downhill. And if 2016 is not the year they win the World Series, stick around.

“I can’t promise what year we will win the World Series, but we will win a World Series with this group of players,” he said.

That’s something the throng of Cubs’ fans at the Brown & Gold appreciated hearing and are beginning to believe.

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Don’t mess with the Clippers’ bench.

Their reserves have been dominant in Blake Griffin’s absence, with Jamal Crawford leading the way with 26 points in a 120-93 victory over the Bulls on Sunday.

In the Clippers’ past four games – all wins – the reserves have outscored the opponent’s bench, 184-78. Their winning streak has coincided with Griffin being out at least a month after breaking his right hand while punching the team’s assistant equipment manager.

“Our bench has been better than fantastic,” Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers said. “You could see Jamal had it going and they were trying to get it to him every single time. That whole group, they don’t worry about misses anymore. I want them to play free, fast and aggressive.”

J.J. Redick added 21 points and DeAndre Jordan had 17 points and 20 rebounds for the Clippers, who improved to 15-3 without Griffin.

“It was a collective effort ...,” said Chris Paul, who had 19 points and seven assists. “That team right there, they don’t go away. They just keep on coming and we took all their punches.”

The Clippers had three double-digit scorers off the bench a game after their

HONOLULU – Russell Wilson threw three first-half touchdown passes to lead Team Irvin to a 49-27 victory Sunday over Team Rice in the Pro Bowl.

The Seattle Seahawks star, who was the first player picked in the all-star game’s draft, led scoring drives on three of Team Irvin’s first four possessions at Aloha Stadium.

He threw touchdown passes of 14 and 2 yards to Atlanta Falcons teammates Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman, respectively, in the opening quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Wilson connected with Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley for a 10-yard score.

Wilson was selected the game’s offensive MVP, while Seahawks teammate Michael Bennett was defensive MVP. Minnesota’s Teddy Bridgewater and Tampa Bay’s Jameis Winston

Scott gets All-Star MVP honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fans sent enforcer John Scott to the NHL AllStar Game by voting him captain of the Pacific Division.

Then they made him tournament MVP. Scott scored twice during the league’s new 3-on-3 All-Star tournament, bringing cheers from fans and smiles from teammates, and was named MVP as a write-in candidate after captaining the Pacific to a 1-0 win in the championship Sunday.

The career journeyman was not listed among the three MVP candidates for a Twitter vote late in the final game, but fans took it upon themselves to select him once again, casting their vote for the 6-foot-8 forward with five goals in 285 career games.

“I’m sure he won over a lot of people, and got even more fans,” Hawks

forward Patrick Kane said of Scott.

Fans at Bridgestone Arena booed the MVP options and yelled for Scott. Teammates lifted him on their shoulders while fans chanted “MVP!” and then Scott was announced as the winner and presented with a Honda Pilot Touring SUV. Scott then posed with his teammates behind their $1 million check.

The NHL changed the format after last year’s All-Star Game featured 92 shots and a combined 29 goals for the biggest offensive display in the showcase’s 60-year history. This time, these All-Stars combined for 116 shots and 23 goals.

This event looked much more like the hockey the league plays the rest of the season. Their inspiration was the 3-on-3 overtime approach for a tournament pitting the four divisions against each other in 20-minute games.

The winners of the first two games advanced to a third-period championship.

Bridge players sometimes feel that way about suit combinations. As if to stress the point, we will have this North-South spade holding for three days in three different scenarios.

First, after West leads a fourth-highest spade five, how should South plan the play in three no-trump?

South’s auction showed (22-plus) 23-24 points and a balanced hand.

North thought three no-trump would be a walk in the park.

When the dummy came down, South could see eight top tricks: one spade (because of the lead), three hearts, two diamonds and two clubs.

A ninth trick was sure to come from clubs or might appear from hearts if the suit split 3-3. But what should declarer do right now?

With only two spades in the dummy, he should call for dummy’s queen.

Here, when the queen holds, South runs the club 10.

Yes, the finesse loses, but declarer still has a spade stopper with West on lead. Declarer takes at least nine tricks: one spade, three hearts, two diamonds and three clubs.

If instead declarer had played dummy’s low spade at trick one, East would have put up his jack.

Then, when South took that trick with his king, how would he continue?

Declarer would cash the top hearts (no luck) and the club ace, cross to dummy with a diamond, and take the club finesse.

Here, West would win that trick and cash four spade winners.

cold: some sneezing, sniffles and coughing for a few days. Sometimes influenza is that mild. However, usually it is much more severe.

In fact, 25,000 to 40,000 people die each year in the United States from influenza.

In most years, the people most likely to get severely ill are older adults or people with chronic diseases. These include people with lung disease, heart disease, dementia, diabetes and kidney or liver disease.

Besides protecting yourself, a flu shot makes you less likely to infect someone else, such as an aging or chronically ill parent or grandparent.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends vaccination every year for everyone aged 6 months and older. Flu shots contain inactive, killed virus; you cannot get the flu from this vaccine. There is also an inhalable (nasal) vaccine that contains live, weakened virus. A new, high-dose version of the flu vaccine is intended to help older adults mount a stronger defense against the flu.

Get vaccinated as early as you can – like this week. It takes two to four weeks after you get the shot to build immunity. During this time, you can still be infected by the flu.

Someday we may have a flu vaccine that is close to perfect. Until that time, getting partial protection is better than having no protection at all against a potentially fatal disease.

Dear Dr. K: I got the flu vaccine last year and still got the flu. Should I even bother with the flu vaccine this late?

Dear Reader: Yes, you should, but don’t expect perfect protection this year, any more than you should have last year.

Vaccines contain fragments of three or four strains that are predicted to dominate during the coming flu season. Different strains of the virus circulate each flu season (October-May).

Huge amounts of flu vaccine need to be made each year. That means that production of the vaccine must begin about six months before the flu season starts, in order to make enough for everyone. As a result, the doctors and scientists responsible for developing the next year’s vaccine need to guess at which strains of the virus will be circulating six to nine months later. They make an educated guess, but it’s still a guess. No one has a crystal ball.

Last year’s flu vaccine was partially effective, but not as effective as usual, because early in the 2014-15 season, a new flu strain emerged.

As the vaccine did not include the new strain, the vaccine’s overall effectiveness was only about 20 percent. In a good year, the effectiveness can be 60 percent or greater.

But don’t let last year’s experience put you off of vaccination.

The flu vaccine always reduces the risk of illness – just more so in some seasons than in others.

Some of my patients don’t get flu shots, despite my recommendation to do so. Sometimes the reason is that they don’t believe the vaccine will really protect them, although that clearly is wrong.

Dear Abby : My friend “Steve” is in his mid-20s and became a father a few months ago.

He’s happy and excited about it, and he’s good with the baby. He has been living with the mother, “Nina,” who is a few years older, for a while now.

Nina is also a friend of mine, and this is her second child.

My problem is that Steve told me some time before his son was born that he thinks he is gay.

He wants to wait until Nina recovers from the pregnancy and finds a job before he tells her. I know he intends on being as big a part of the child’s life as possible.

As much as I don’t want Nina to be a single mother twice over, it doesn’t seem good for her, Steve or the children to stay in a sham relationship.
