JOLIET – Mark Ferry and Stephen Balich don’t have a lot in common politically.

But the two candidates did have one goal Tuesday, which was to get on the top of their respective ballots.

Ferry and Balich, both County Board incumbents, were among the first to show up for the 9 a.m. lottery ball drawing that determined top ballot positions for eight County Board races and for Democratic circuit clerk candidates in the March 15, 2016, primary.

“It matters,” Ferry, a Democrat in District 13, said, although he, like most of the other County Board candidates in the ballot lottery, is one of two candidates in a pick-two election.

Two candidates are elected from each County Board district in the general election.

Both Democrats and Republicans try to put up two candidates in the primary so they will be in a position to win both spots in November.

How different is he politically from Balich?

Balich, a Republican in District 7, recounted one of his early political experiences.

“I was a ward committeeman for Bernard Epton vs.

Harold Washington,” Balich said, recalling the 1983 Chicago mayoral race.

Balich, however, also sees value in the top ballot position.

Susan Olenek named head of Will County Health Department

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An agency veteran has been tapped to take over the Will County Health Department.

Susan Olenek will become executive director in February after John Cicero retires, the Board of Health announced Tuesday.

“The board felt Sue’s vers a t i l i t y a n d Susan Olenek breadth of experience made her an outstanding candidate,” spokesman Vic Reato said. “She’s worn a lot of public health hats.”

Reato said the board took several months to determine

a replacement for Cicero, who has been with the agency for 37 years.

Olenek has worked for the Health Department for 27 years, most recently as assistant executive director.

“This will be my eighth position here as I’ve moved up. I think I’ve seen the agency from a lot of different perspectives,” she said.

Olenek began her Health Department career in the Division of Environmental Health, where she became a licensed environmental health practitioner. She also has extensive human resources experience and is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management.

A Lincoln-Way area resident since 1971, Olenek grad-

uated from Lincoln-Way High School before earning a bachelor’s degree from the School of Biological Sciences at Illinois State University. She currently is completing work on a master’s in organizational leadership from Lewis University. She also is a member of the Joliet Council for Working Women, a division of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“I think the biggest question mark for us is the state budget,” Olenek said Tuesday. “It’s hard to plan for revenue and expenses when you don’t know what’s coming.”

Olenek also hopes the Health Department will “stay on the radar for capital projects” to replace its older building.

G-Shaft candy dates back to coal miner’s widow in 1881

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It’s that time of year when visions of sugarplums are supplanted by memories of G-Shaft candy – at least for many.

G-Shaft candy is a local favorite, made today at Dan’s Homemade Candies in Joliet, and a Christmas tradition that dates back to 1881.

It still is a popular item, especially around Christmastime.

A woman from Braidwood had just been in the other day for a large order, Annette Smith said last week while working the counter at Dan’s.

“She bought 18 one-pound [bags] and three half-pounds,” Smith said. “She said she passes them out as gifts for friends and family.”

G-Shaft candy is not the only candy at the store that has origins in the Christmas season, Dan’s co-owner Kris Collins said. But it is one with a particular local flavor – so to speak.

“G-Shaft definitely. That is a huge Christmas item,” Collins said.

Back in 1881

Orders come in from around the country during the holidays, Collins said. Mostly, they are from people who at one time lived in the Coal City or Braidwood area, where the candy has its origins.

The story of G-Shaft candy has been documented in The Herald-News over the decades.

The hard, brown, cylindrical candy with a complex peppermint flavor is traced to Harriet Williamson, whose husband, William, was killed in 1881 in a mine accident in Braidwood, according to a Herald-News article from April 9, 1984.

To support her family, Harriet began making the candy first known as “Bulls Eye.” Later it was named G-Shaft after the name of the mine located

The mines were named alphabetically.

At one point, there was a G-Shaft Candy Shop in Braidwood.

The candy name is hyphenated today, although it wasn’t always.

After Harriet’s death, her son, Harry, took up G-Shaft candy. He started the Harry Williamson Candy Co. in Minooka. By 1984, Frank Williamson was making G-Shaft candy in Herscher.

Family traditions

The coal mines are gone, but G-Shaft candy has endured, thanks in part to its appeal and also to the dedication of families to continue the recipe.

Dan’s obtained the recipe seven years ago, Collins said.

She knows of two families who had it before then.

The popularity of G-Shaft candy peaks during the holi-

days, Collins said.

“We have people call who used to live in that area, and they need the candy,” she said.

Dan’s has shipped G-Shaft candy as far as California and

Alaska. The calls for the candy often come with fond memories, which, Collins said, she likes to hear.

“They call, and they start talking about what G-Shaft means in their lives,” she said.

“It’s pretty neat. It’s amazing hearing what G-Shaft means to

JJC welcomes new faces, honors retirees

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College welcomed new staff members and recognized others who were retiring at a Board of Trustees meeting.

At Tuesday’s meeting, board trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Randall Fletcher to the position of vice president of academic affairs. He will start in his position Jan. 4, said Kelly Rohder, JJC spokeswoman.

Fletcher comes from Parkland College in Champaign,

where he was the dean of career and transfer programs.

He also held multiple positions at Danville Area Community College, JJC officials said.

“He not only brings a tremendous amount of experience to this position but has a personality and a passion for student success that make him a great fit for JJC,” Debra Daniels, JJC president, said in a news release.

Fletcher will be the permanent replacement for Donna Stewart, Rohder said. Stewart resigned from JJC in May

to return to the College of DuPage.

Board trustees also unanimously approved filling several other positions at Tuesday’s meeting.

Laurie Anema will serve as the interim director of financial aid and veterans affairs.

Anema recently retired from Moraine Valley Community College, where she was the financial aid director.

Angela Kaysen-Luzbetak will be the dean of student success. She currently serves as the director of general student development and new student

orientation.

Board trustees approved the retirement request for Bette Conkin, who is the dean of liberal arts and sciences.

She was one of five JJC retirees honored at the meeting.

Other retirees honored included Elbert Carroll, Sharon Schroeder, Diane Kozielski and Cathy Trezek.

Tax levy

Also Tuesday, the board unanimously approved the 2015 tax levy. JJC officials proposed a $56.1 million tax levy, which is based on rev-

enue assumptions from the 2016 budget passed earlier this year.

The assumptions included no tuition increase, a 2.3 percent increase in operating funds, and a 0.8 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index.

A JJC district resident with a home valued at $166,100 may expect to pay about $170 under the levy, a slight increase over the previous year. Existing property is expected to increase by 1 percent within the district, which covers several counties, JJC officials said.

State workers rally in Joliet, target Rauner More online

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Several hundred state workers gathered in Joliet on Tuesday for a rally aimed at gathering support in union contract negotiations with Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Union leaders and one Democratic legislator also called on members to get involved in the 2016 state elections.

The anti-Rauner rhetoric was intense and angry with the governor being called “a monster” at one point. Speakers repeatedly painted the state unions’ contract fight as a battle between the middle class and a millionaire.

“His philosophy is to take away from working families so he can give money to the rich,” Kendra Doellman-Best, secretary-treasurer for Laborers’ Local 2002, told the loud crowd. “We’ve got to fight that monster.”

Workers at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 176 hall came from Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee and other state facilities in the region.

One organizer of rally said 800 people signed in as they walked in the doors, but at least 200 people probably came in without signing.

Rauner’s administration has announced completed contracts negotiated with some of the state’s unions.

Roberta Lynch, executive director for AFSCME Council 31, said about 65,000 state union workers do not have signed contracts, while about 5,000 do.

She said workers are facing proposals for four-year pay freezes and doubling the amounts they pay for health insurance.

“We’re standing up for fair contracts for union members who have to negotiate with a governor who doesn’t respect what state workers do,” Lynch told the crowd.

Lynch told union members to get ready for the 2016 election, saying the governor will be spending heavily to win numbers in the state Legislature.

Also speaking was state Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, who said dissatisfaction with former Gov. Pat Quinn’s proposals for pension changes led many union members to stay home during the 2014 election won by Rauner.

“We’ve never seen an election where the ultra-rich have the money advantage,” Holmes said of next year’s election.

“This is scary.”

After setting a January trial date, Judge Daniel Rozak and Robert W. GoldSmith, 53, ran through a list of subpoenaed witnesses and GoldSmith, who’s representing himself, made Robert W. three motions Gold-Smith to suppress evidence. Gold-Smith is charged with solicitation of murder and faces six to 30 years in prison, if convicted.

In November 2010, GoldSmith ‘s then-wife sought an order of protection after he grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the face as they walked out of a courtroom, police said. He has been locked up

Gold-Smith on Tuesday said the domestic battery charges from the courtroom attack would prejudice a jury, but Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Capelli argued that’s what led to Gold-Smith being behind bars in the first place.

“It goes directly to motive,” Rozak agreed and denied the motion. The judge also decided testimony from three jail inmates who claim Gold-Smith discussed a hit with them earlier could be relevant.

Gold-Smith said recordings of any phone calls made from the jail should be excluded as

evidence – noting he has been on the phone more than 500 hours in the last four years.

“Although it’s posted they may be recorded, there’s no warning they would be used as evidence,” the attorney-turned-defendant said.

“I don’t want to listen to 500 hours of phone calls about who fed the dog today,” Rozak told Capelli. “Isolate what you want to use. I will listen to it [privately] to decide [if it’s admissible].”

Gold-Smith also used Tuesday’s court appearance to confirm subpoenas have been sent to Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Regis, Will County Assistant Public Defender Steve Whitmore, private defense attorney Jeff Tomczak, three former inmates of the Will County jail and four members of his extended family. Among the inmates subpoenaed is Jason Gonzalez, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to murdering his uncle after representing himself.

The plan is to add a managed lane facility within the existing median of I-55, also called the Stevenson Expressway.

Officials say the lane would improve mobility, travel times and efficiency.

Exhibits will be on display and there will be audio-visual presentations.

Written comments may also be submitted at the meeting or until Dec. 23.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A jury has found an Olympia Fields woman guilty on one charge in connection with a 2013 crash in Lockport that killed a developmentally disabled woman.

Marissa C. Martin, 20, was convicted of failing to report a traffic accident involving an injury or death, but was found not guilty of a more severe aggravated failing-to-report charge and not guilty of driving under the influence of marijuana.

The jury took about threeand-a-half hours Friday to reach the decision, according to court records.

About 4:45 a.m. Oct. 27,

2013, Tina Douglas, 48, was reported missing from a group home for adults with developmental disabilities operated by Trinity Services in the 2000 block of State Street in Lockport. About 15 minutes later, Martin was driving her black Dodge Charger north in the 1800 block of State Street when the collision occurred, police said.

Martin told police she wasn’t sure if she’d struck a person or animal and drove home, according to trial testimony. She and her father drove to the Lockport police station about three hours later.

Martin told police she had been working until 3 a.m. at Wendy’s in New Lenox, then

she drove a co-worker to his home in the Fairmont area.

She was going through Lockport to get on Interstate 355 and return to Olympia Fields on Interstate 80, police said.

She provided blood and urine samples at Silver Cross Hospital that prosecutors said showed a small amount of marijuana in her system.

Martin served two months in jail last year before being released on bond. She could be sentenced in February to one to three years in prison, but also is eligible for probation.

According to court records, Douglas’ family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Martin and Trinity Services.

PLAINFIELD – Village trustees on Monday tabled an amendment that would have simplified and changed Plainfield’s site plan, landscape and sign ordinances.

“We’re trying to streamline these ordinances to make it more straightforward, to make it more simple, to make it more business-friendly,” Village Planner Michael Garrigan said.

Proposed changes in the site plan ordinance would allow fiber cement board for buildings in a traditional ver-

nacular design, requiring 100 percent face brick, stone or fiber cement board construction for multifamily buildings or townhomes. Also, any commercial drive-thrus next to residential areas would be at least 200 feet away from the nearest residential lot line as part of the changes.

Changes in the landscape ordinance would reduce the number of required plantings from 15 shrubs every 30 linear feet to 10 shrubs per 30 linear feet. Shrubs must be maintained to a maximum 4-foot height along curb cuts or access drives, with shade or ornamental trees being planted

Plainfield trustees table changes to site plan

6 arraigned in kidnap of 2 college students 1 victim attended Romeoville High School The ASSOCIATED PRESS ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Six people were arraigned Tuesday in the kidnapping of two college students from Illinois – one of whom attended high school in Romeoville – who investigators said were forcibly restrained for more than 40 hours and repeatedly beaten until a police SWAT team rescued them. One victim was shot in the leg.

Authorities have declined to release a motive for the ordeal that began Saturday near the University of Rochester, where the students are seniors. Police said the victims were targeted.

Police said Nicholas Kollias, of Northbrook, who was shot, and Ani Okeke Ewo, of Aurora, were reported missing Saturday evening, hours after they were last seen near the school.

Ewo attended Romeoville High School, according to a 2015 football roster posted on the University of Rochester’s website.

“The victims were terrorized repeatedly over the time they were restrained and

forced to surrender money, credit cards and personal identification numbers,” a felony complaint against four of the suspects said.

Lydell Strickland, 26, Dennis Perez, 23, and Leah Gigliotti, 20, all of Rochester, N.Y., and Samantha Hughes, 19, of Pittsford, N.Y., pleaded not guilty to first-degree kidnapping and were ordered held without bail during an appearance in City Court.

A felony complaint said Inalia Rolldan, 19, and Ruth Lora, 19, both of Rochester, N.Y., helped guard and feed the college students while they were tied up in a bedroom inside a Rochester, N.Y., house. They pleaded not guilty to second-degree kidnapping. Bail was set at $50,000.

Of the six, only Strickland was assigned a public defender.

Hearings to determine attorneys for the others are expected later this week, a court employee said.

Outside the courthouse Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Matthew Schwartz cited

the ongoing investigation in declining to release details of the case, including whether the victims and suspects were acquainted and the backgrounds of those charged.

“In an effort to protect the integrity of that investigation, we’re not going to be sharing any of the specifics,” Schwartz said. He said additional charges and suspects were possible.

According to the 2015 university roster, Ewo is a cornerback for the football team, and before that played defensive back for Romeoville, while Kollias was listed as a defensive end on the 2014 roster.

“The University of Rochester is grateful to the Rochester Police Department for the sustained efforts that led to the swift arrests and charges in the abduction of our two students,” the university said in a statement Tuesday. “Our focus as a university is on our two students as they recover from their ordeal. We continue to believe this was an isolated incident and wish to stress that our campus is safe.”

Trial begins in alleged casino scam

If Judge Edward Burmila didn’t know how to play poker before Tuesday afternoon, he got a front-row seat for lessons from casino employees.

Burmila began hearing a bench trial for Christopher G. Yaldo, 31, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, and Isam Y. Kejbo, 41, of Commerce, Michigan.

Both men are charged with cheating at a gambling game and face one to three years in prison and a lifetime ban from Illinois casinos if convicted.

On Nov. 30, 2013, Yaldo and Kejbo were playing Mississippi Stud at Hollywood Casino. prosecutors said, the men sat apart from one another, but arranged signals when one was able to see the card the dealer took from the shuffling machine on the table. Defense attorney Robert Loeb said the two men were only taking advantage of a “sloppy” dealer who wasn’t hiding cards properly.

When questioned by gaming board agents, one of the suspects allegedly said they’d been operating in several casinos, but Will County assistant state’s attorneys Jeff Brown and Sondra Denmark told Bur-

mila they would not make a motion to admit other crimes.

Casino Operations Manager Albert Sikirdji testified dealers are trained to keep the cards flat as they’re dealt and are expected to monitor “table talk” where it’s permitted.

“There’s no rule [listed that says] a player can’t look at a dealer’s hand as he takes cards out of the shuffle machine?”

Loeb asked.

Sikirdji confirmed there is not.

“Where in the rules does it say you tap your left pinkie to show [other players] you have an ace or your right thumb to show you have a six?” Brown asked later.

An intergovernmental agreement with Channahon Township will move forward, with reciprocal use of personnel and equipment, Durkin said. The governments may share insurance limits, indemnification, billing and payments and dispute resolution.

The board also approved participating in the Illinois Municipal Insurance Cooperative for property and casualty insurance beginning Dec. 31.

Membership in the cooperative will reduce the cost of risk management and administration, Durkin told trustees, and better control premium costs in the future.

Members are owners of the program, he said, and surpluses at the end of each year may go to offset premiums the following year. IMIC self-insures the first $50,000 in claims, Durkin said, and the maximum premium cost for the 2015-16 year is $89,606, of which $28,000 is dedicated to the village’s loss fund.

Other area members include the municipalities of Coal City, Oswego, Dwight, Peotone, Wilmington, Marseilles, Braidwood and Plano.

At the next board meeting, trustees are expected to vote on the tax levy and a possible ban on outdoor donation boxes in the village limits.

Joliet D-86 administrator to change duties JOLIET – A Joliet Public Schools District 86 administrator will have a change in duties and responsibilities.

Superintendent Charles Coleman said Tuesday that E. Wesley Russell, assistant superintendent for business and financial services, will have changes to some of his duties and responsibilities.

“It runs a gamut of things,” he said.

He said some of those duties

are being defined as district officials review them. He said they are based on overall needs for the district.

He said there will not be board action regarding the changes at Wednesday’s meeting, which will take place at T.E. Culbertson Elementary School.

Russell oversees the District 86 business department, which provides support to the central administration and building principals for instruction programs and special projects funding, accord-

ing to the district’s website.

The department also reviews, updates and maintains payroll records.

According to a Sept. 30 bulletin from Coleman, District 86 was awarded a certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Association of School Business Officials International.

The district was recognized for its comprehensive annual financial report for fiscal year 2014. It was the 31st consecutive year the district received the award.

CHANNAHON – The Channahon Village Board on Monday approved two union contracts – one for police sergeants and another for public works employees – both with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150.

Sergeants will receive 2.5 percent pay raises for 2015, retroactive to May 1; 2.5 percent raises in 2016; and 3 percent raises in 2017. The increases bring the range of salaries to $80,012 to $99,708 for this year; $82,012 to $102,201 for next year; and $84,472 to $105,276 in 2017.

In addition, sergeants will receive: • An increase in court-time pay from a two- to a three-hour minimum or actual hours worked, whichever is greater.

• Pay for travel to mandatory training when the destination is more than 25 miles away.

• An increase in holiday pay from eight hours to 12 hours when assigned to 12-hour shifts but only actually working six or more hours.

• An increase in sick leave and personal time.

• An increase in uniform allowances to $1,000 a year, up from $500.

The new union contract for Channahon’s public works employees includes all regular full- and part-time water and sewer operators, utility labor-

ers, street laborers, working foreman and those in building maintenance.

Those employees will receive the same percentage raises as police sergeants for the three-year term, bringing the range of salaries for laborers and building maintenance workers to $42,068 to $52,624 this year; $43,120 to $53,939 next year; and $44,413 to $55,557 in 2017.

Salaries of utility operators will range from $54,769 to $68,512 this year; $56,138 to $70,225 next year; and $57,822 to $72,332 in 2017.

In addition, the public works staff will receive: • An increase in on-call pay.

• Step-up pay when assigned to fill in for a supervisor who is on leave.

• An additional $25 in boot allowance and prescription safety glasses are not to exceed $150 a year.

Village Administrator Tom Durkin said after the meeting he could not comment on the specific terms in the contracts, as negotiations are still ongoing for police officers and administration staff.

“The negotiations with all the groups went very well, were very smooth, were very respectful,” Durkin said.

“We’ve got a great group of employees here, and I do expect the [other] negotiations to go very smoothly.”

Collins can identify with them, since she grew up with G-Shaft candy herself.

“I even eat a piece on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day because we went to Grandma’s, and she always had G-Shaft candy,” she said.

Besides tradition, G-Shaft candy also may have endured because of its somewhat mysterious flavor.

While Collins describes it as a peppermint candy, it does not quite taste like a peppermint and certainly doesn’t look like one.

“It’s kind of peppermint,” Collins said. “Some people say they get a root beer flavor from it. Some people say it’s got a licorice flavor. ... You smell it, and it’s strong. You kind of get the peppermint scent. But you just can’t tell what it is.”

Carolyn Angers, of Joliet, who was in the shop last week, said she had just been to a large event where each place setting included a chocolate ornament from Dan’s.

She got the idea to buy Christmas candy for a party she was organizing.

“I thought this would be a nice treat for them,” she said, while buying bags of a holiday assortment of hard candy.

“I thought some of these you can’t find anymore.”

Joseph Braun Bannon “Joe” went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, December 6, 2015, at the age of 86.

He led an exemplary Christian life and he was loved dearly by his family and friends. Joe was a devoted member of St. Patrick’s Church his entire life. He was born in Joliet on September 4, 1929, to Robert and Henrietta Bannon.

Joe is survived by his loving wife Joan with whom he shared 63 years of married life. Also survived by his children Jim (Toni) Bannon, Mary Anne Bannon Komar, Joe (Karen) Bannon, Marty (John) Bachtler, Bob (Char) Bannon, Tom (Debbie) Bannon and deceased son, John. Also survived by his sister Mary Alyce Kielp. Further survived by his grandchildren Jeremy, Jeff, Kristin, Maria, Nikki, Tom, David, Ben, Julie, John, Pat, Matt, Stephanie, Kylie, Rylan, Mike and deceased grandchild Chris-

topher; His great-grandchildren Jakob, Elijah, Finn, Lena, Camden and Liam.

Joe was a graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in Floraculture and worked several years as a buyer for Blockson Chemical Company before purchasing Labo Florist in which he enjoyed brightening lives through flowers for over 35 years. “Joe Labo” was well known for using his flower shop sign for Christian messages.

He also enjoyed Christian ministry in many ways such as the Stateville Prison ministry, Pro-Life activities, Christian Family Movement and the Religious Education program at Patrick’s Church.

Joe inherited a great love for building from his father, which Joe handed down to his children. Together they built their lake house which the family enjoyed for over 40 years.

She spent time daily with her grandchildren and had a knack for cooking and loved trying new recipes.

She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and singing. Lou found much pleasure in traveling the world; her Celtic soul often led her back to Ireland. She was generous of her time and resources and continuously helped those in need.

Donald R. Geiss, age 83, of Wilmington, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Aperion Care in Wilmington.

Born November 5, 1932, Donald Raymond was the youngest of seven sons born to Leone and Ellen Ross (Dixon) Geiss. He was raised and educated in Wilmington and went on to honorably serve in the U.S. Army.

On April 9, 1955, Don married Adela E. Gallegos in Colorado Springs, and together they made their home in Wilmington.

Don’s employment entailed working at Hauck Oil in Wilmington, before going to work at UniRoyal. He later gained employment with Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet, from where he retired after 32 years of service.

Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wilmington, Wilmington American Legion Post 191 and the Loyal Order of Moose, Wilmington Lodge 241. He was a lifetime member of Ponderosa and Will County Sportsman’s Club / Lake Will, and belonged to the Caterpillar Retiree’s Club.

Don loved to fish, as well as hunt pheasants and rabbits. He was a NASCAR enthusiast and took pleasure in photography.

Survivors include his wife, Adela; children, Charlene Cohoon, Donna (Steve) VanWert and Ellen (Doug) Bryant, all of Wilmington and Donald L. Illinois leaders report minor Vandalized menorah progress in state budget talks rededicated at

By SARA BURNETT The Associated Press CHICAGO – Illinois legislative leaders said they made minor progress during a Tuesday meeting aimed at ending the state budget stalemate, including agreeing to take another shot at overhauling a public pension system that’s billions in debt.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, GOP leaders Sen. Christine Radogno and Rep. Jim Durkin, Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton sat down for the second time in as many weeks to try to end an impasse now in its sixth month.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Madigan, Radogno and Durkin described the meeting at Rauner’s office in Chicago as cordial and said they will meet again next week.

They said the conversation behind closed doors has focused almost entirely on legislative priorities Raun-

er says he wants, including term limits for lawmakers and curbing the rights of labor unions to collectively bargain.

None of those proposals would have an immediate impact on the state’s budget deficit, but Rauner has said they’re necessary to improve Illinois’ economy in the long term. The businessman-turned governor says he won’t sign off on a tax increase to help balance the budget until Democrats who control the Legislature give him some of what he wants.

Madigan and the GOP leaders indicated the items most likely to bring an agreement – which also took up most of the nearly 90-minute sit-down – were changes to pensions and workers’ compensation insurance.

The leaders agreed their staffs will meet to try to work out a new plan to address Illinois’ multibillion-dollar unfunded pension liability.

The Illinois Supreme Court earlier this year threw out a previous pension over-

haul, saying it violated a provision of the state constitution that says retirement benefits can’t be diminished.

Lawmakers said that plan would save the state billions in contributions. Durkin said they’re now considering other ideas.

“No one wants to talk about it, but we have to talk about it,” he said.

Democrats have rejected other top Rauner priorities, such as term limits and creating a new process for drawing Illinois’ political districts.

Republicans say those changes are necessary to end years of corruption. Madigan called them “Republican campaign issues for November 2016” that have no place in budget talks.

Radogno and Durkin also said lawmakers agreed to shelve talk of changing the formula Illinois uses to fund public education, saying they will take it up after a budget deal is reached. Lawmakers have long agreed that the system should be more equitable, but not on how to fix it.

CHAMPAIGN – A large menorah knocked over earlier this year outside a University of Illinois Jewish center has been repaired and rededicated.

The center candle of the menorah at the university’s Chabad Center was lit Monday by center director Rabbi Dovid Tiechtel and interim university Chancellor Barbara Wilson. A group of students lit two other candles, and many in the crowd of 150 people sang songs as they marked the second night of Hanukkah and the menorah’s repair.

Tiechtel said his community’s faith has grown stronger since the Aug. 19 vandalism.

“What we have seen over the past few months from all across the Jewish community, the community at large and people of all

faiths, is that we are going to stand taller and we are going to stand brighter,” he told The Champaign News-Gazette.

Tiechtel said $7,500 has been raised for a new 9-foot menorah that is being designed. He’s confident it will be installed next year, and he hopes it will become as well known as the university’s Alma Mater statue.

“We want it to be an icon of pride and light,” he said.

“For every person, at your graduation, you aren’t just going to go to the Alma Mater. You are going to come to the menorah here, a beacon of light.”

University of Illinois police have said a Parkland College student charged with a felony in the vandalism told them he planned to take the menorah to a Jewish friend. Police say the damage hasn’t been classified as a hate crime.

Lawmaker asks whether U.S. forces manipulated into striking hospital

By KEN DILANIAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Two servicemen have told Congress that American special forces called in an airstrike on a hospital in Afghanistan because they believed the Taliban were using it as a command center, contradicting the military’s explanation that the attack was meant for a different building.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, a California Republican who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, quoted the servicemen without naming them in a letter he sent Tuesday to Defense Secretary Ash Carter. The letter highlights gaps in the military’s explanation of an October airstrike on a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz that killed

31 civilians.

Hunter said the accounts provided to him raise the possibility that the U.S. was manipulated by its Afghan partners into attacking the hospital. If true, that would be a setback in the U.S. effort to work with and train a local force capable of securing that country.

A Pentagon spokesman said Carter had received the letter but the Defense Department would not comment.

Hunter declined to identify the servicemen because he said they feared disciplinary action.

The two servicemen told Hunter the U.S. special forces soldiers who called in the airstrike were not aware the Doctors Without Borders building was still being used as a hospital. Afghan forces, they say,

told them it had become a Taliban command/control center.

“There were enemy in there,” Hunter quotes one of the servicemen as saying.

“They had already removed and ransomed the foreign doctors, and they had fired on partnered personnel from there.”

Doctors Without Borders leaders and independent witnesses insist there were no armed men in the hospital, and the military’s investigation supported that contention.

The military’s official account says the soldiers and airmen intended the airstrike to hit a different building a half mile away and that it was only because of technical failures and human error that an AC-130 mistakenly struck and destroyed the trauma center.

WASHINGTON – The government announced plans Tuesday to update its safety rating system for new cars and trucks to include whether the vehicle has technology to avoid crashes, in addition to how well it protects occupants in accidents.

The five-star rating system now uses crash tests to assess how well people inside are shielded from injury or death in front, side and rollover crashes.

While that will remain a big factor in the ratings, they also will take into account whether the vehicle has nine technologies that can help prevent or lessen the severity of crashes. Those technologies include sensors that can detect an imminent frontal collision and apply the brakes, or warn drivers about vehicles in their blind spots or that they’re drifting into another lane.

Some technologies automatically switch headlight high beams to low beams when another vehicle is approaching, help prevent rollovers, and employ amber rear turn signal lights that drivers are quicker

Political sweetheart deals are questionable SPRINGFIELD – Government contracts given to organizations that give campaign contributions to the politicians – who write the agreements – can produce some pretty bizarre documents.

I remember back when Rod Blagojevich was governor, PWS Environmental, a Cicero firm that had given big bucks to Democratic candidates, suddenly had a contract to clean road salt storage domes.

Only problem was, some engineers said it was unnecessary work.

So taxpayers may have received no discernible benefit from the work done.

It smacked of a sweetheart deal.

Illinois now bars giving major state contracts to firms that have contributed to the campaigns of the politicians making those decisions.

It was a good move to eliminate this “pay-to-play” practice.

But what about labor unions?

They give also lavishly to politicians, and they sign enormous contracts with state government – sometimes worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

How is that not a conflict? After all, if it is for business, it ought to be a conflict for Big Labor.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has called for banning such contributions for government worker unions.

A recent lawsuit brought to light an old labor contract that raised my eyebrows.

The perplexing contract is between the state of Illinois and the Service Employees International labor union.

SEIU is a big-bucks political player that funneled $6.74 million into Gov. Pat Quinn’s campaign coffers since 2010.

Politicians will do back flips for that kind of dough.

And while Quinn was governor, the state entered into a contract with SEIU to contribute money for each hour worked by home care workers represented by the union toward health insurance.

But here is the rub: Fewer than one-fifth of the home care workers actually accepted the insurance offered by the health care fund administered by SEIU. So instead of the state just contributing toward the 5,000 employees accepting the insurance, taxpayers are paying for those employees and an extra 20,000 workers who said they didn’t want it.

Wouldn’t it be better if workers declining the insurance got a pay raise instead?

Why would Quinn negotiate a contract like that?

At least on the surface, it would appear the contract has the state paying 80 percent more than it should.

Messages were left with SEIU and Quinn, but neither responded.

These contributions are costing taxpayers $2.96 million a month – or about $35 million a year.

Recently, the SEIU got a court order compelling the state pay $13 million in payments to the health plan it had fallen behind on. That’s hardly surprising – the state’s fallen behind on paying just about everybody it owes money.

But the court order leapfrogs SEIU ahead of needy families, nonprofits and others also waiting for their payments. Some might call that unfair.

So how well does SEIU run the health plan?

It’s hard to say, but according to tax documents, the employee overseeing the fund makes $146,000 a year and works 20 hours a week.

Not a bad part-time gig – if you can get it.

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Last season, Plainfield South ended Joliet Central’s girls basketball season. The Steelmen might have gone into Tuesday’s home game with revenge on their minds, but the Cougars’ strong team effort spoiled Central’s plans.

After trailing, 36-28, going into the fourth quarter, Plain-

field South scored 21 points to pick up the 49-46 nonconference win.

“We definitely didn’t give up,” Jaianna Brooks said. “We did come out slow in the third quarter. We let them come back a lot, but once we saw that, we picked it back up and got everyone to think about what they were doing before they passed and shot, make sure that we calmed it down and picked up our intensity.”

For the Cougars, the key word this year is “we.”

Last year, South reached 12 wins, its best season ever, partly because Tyler Everette had a dominating season. This year, a different player could dominate each night.

Tuesday night was Anya Brooks’ time to shine. The sophomore picked up a teamhigh 18 points while adding eight rebounds. She said those numbers don’t matter to her,

however.

“We don’t like to put ‘I’ in team,” Brooks said. “We all help each other out. One person does one thing to help us get to what we do. Kudos to the other person. You get a dump in, you have to thank the person that gave you the assist.”

It’s the team-effort mindset that helped South (3-6) get the come-from-behind win.

Antwanetta Boswell was clutch, scoring six of her 12

points in the fourth quarter.

Alyssa Fink led the strong team defensive with 14 rebounds while adding 10 points.

Jaianna Brooks, who missed the last five games because of a heart murmur, chipped in nine points and played solidly.

Plainfield East rolls past Providence

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The boys basketball teams from Plainfield East and Providence entered Tuesday’s nonconference game with many things in common.

Both sides graduated a lot of talent from successful squads and started out losing their first three contests before collecting a win and then dropping their conference openers.

However, that’s where the similarities ended. The Bengals jumped out to a 16-6 lead after one quarter and built up a 34-13 halftime lead before capturing a 59-38 win over the Celtics.

“We were a lot better on more possessions than we were in some other games,” East coach Branden Adkins said. “Our defense gave us some momentum, and we keep

talking about letting our defense creating easy opportunities on offense. We’ve had games where we had two or three possessions in a row that are pretty solid but then had three or four that weren’t so good. We put together five, six or seven solid possessions together tonight.

“They were doubling and tripling Elyjah [Goss], but we shared the ball well and knocked down shots. We got transition baskets, and that made it difficult for them. Our record could definitely be different, but I like where we’re headed as a team. We’re still learning about each other, but now guys are starting to get comfortable and playing good, solid basketball.”

The Bengals (2-4) connected on 18 of 29 shots from the floor through the first three quarters and finished shooting 22 of 39 for the game. Meanwhile,

“The shots just aren’t falling for us,” Celtics coach Tim Trendel said. “We’re getting some good looks, but they’re just not going in, and a lot of that is our experience, and the speed of the game is catching up to us. We lost a lot of guys from last year, so the new guys have to figure out how fast varsity basketball is, and they’re a

good team. In the second half, we did some of the things we need to do to compete with teams at that high of a level.”

Jalyn Adams led East with 23 points and six rebounds, while Vinny Tarello chipped in with 11 points. Lee Higgins scored eight points, Jordan and Collin Reed contributed six points apiece, and Elyjah Goss added five points and five rebounds.

“We lost some guys, but we’re trying to find the pieces and get back to where we were last year,” Adams said. “We were playing together tonight and getting some ball movement. I like that we’re a family. We’re always together and working hard in practice and getting after it and then taking that out here to the court.”

While things may not have started as well as the Bengals might have hoped, they’re feeling optimistic about where

they’ll be by the end of the season.

“We played with intensity on the defensive end, and that’s where it starts, since our defense leads to our offense,” Tarello said. “I saw lanes open up, and my teammates did a good job of finishing; and when they catch the ball, I know that they’re going to finish, so it’s easy to throw it to them and get an assist. We’ve had some tough losses, but we’ve just stayed together as a family and as a group, and we just grind every day in order to get better.”

The Celtics were led by Anthony DiNardi, who had eight points and five rebounds, while Jake Schutter (seven rebounds) and Scott Slocum had seven points apiece. Michael Drew had six points and seven rebounds, and Martez Malone and Brian Castelli had four points each.

After she would shoot a 3, less than a second later she’d be at the boards fighting for a rebound. That’s why she also had a team-high nine rebounds.

Montgomery Armstrong chipped in seven points, while Morgan Jones and Ashley Hare each added five.

The whole lineup shone in the third quarter. The 19-point quarter performance wasn’t enough to win, however.

By RONALD BLUM The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In another dramatic move to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2011, the Arizona Diamondbacks reached an agreement Tuesday to acquire All-Star right-hander Shelby Miller from the Atlanta Braves for overall No. 1 draft pick Dansby Swanson, and two other prospects.

Arizona, which finalized a $206.5 million, six-year contract with major league ERA leader Zack Greinke earlier in the day, also would send outfielder Ender Inciarte and pitching prospect Aaron Blair to the Braves, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The Diamondbacks would acquire minor league left-hander Gabe Speier as part of the trade. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade was pending approval of medical records.

Greinke is set to anchor a new-look rotation that also could include Patrick Corbin, Rubby De La Rosa and Robbie Ray. “We’re counting on his mentorship with our other pitchers and being a part of helping their growth,” Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart said.

The Cubs also made some major moves. They agreed to a $56 million, four-year contract with infielder Ben Zobrist, who also was sought by the New York Mets, who swept the Cubs

in the NL Championship Series.

Zobrist figures to replace second baseman Starlin Castro, dealt Tuesday night to the New York Yankees for right-hander Adam Warren and a player to be named, likely infielder Brendan Ryan.

The Cubs also finalized a $32 million, two-year contract with 37-year-old right-hander John Lackey, who slots in as the Cubs’ third starter behind Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester.

In the day’s other trade, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired infielder Jedd Gyorko and from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Jon Jay. San Diego will pay St. Louis $7.5 million to cover part of the $33 million remaining on Gyorko’s contract.

The 27-year-old Gyorko hit .247 with 16 homers and 57 RBIs this year, spending time at second base, shortstop and first base. He has a .236 average in three big league seasons with 49 homers and 171 RBIs. Also: • Atlanta agreed to a $5.3 million, two-year contract with former White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers, a person familiar with that deal said, also speaking on condition of anonymity because there had not been an announcement.

It was our spring training of sorts.

Those fortunate enough to attend Monday night’s regular quarterly meeting of the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County at the Joliet Moose were entertained, to say the least.

Longtime American League umpire Bill Haller, a Lockport native who lives in downstate Illinois, attended the meeting, addressed the gathering and answered a laundry list of questions. His stories and responses were informative and often hilarious. No surprise there.

We say it served as our spring training because two major local winter banquets – both with baseball themes – are scheduled in late January. There could not have been better warmup for the big banquets than a night with Haller.

The Old Timers’ 67th annual banquet is scheduled for the night of Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Clarion Hotel on Larkin Avenue off Interstate 80. The guest speaker will be Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog. Haller said he will be there as well, “as long as I am still kicking.” Imagine the tales that will be spun.

One week later, on Thursday night, Jan. 28, the University of St. Francis goes to bat with its annual extravaganza, Brown & Gold Night in the Pat Sullivan Center on the campus. The featured speaker there will be Cubs executive vice president and general manager Jed Hoyer.

A night with Herzog, and a week later, a night with Hoyer – not bad for local baseball fans.

Haller said he has not heard Herzog speak in a banquet setting, but “he’s a great guy, and I know everyone will enjoy him.” If you can corner Haller for a few minutes sometime during the evening, you will be in the company of another great guy you are sure to enjoy.

As for Herzog, he managed the Kansas City Royals to three straight American

League West championships from 1976 to 1978. A couple of years later, he took the helm of the St. Louis Cardinals and, under his guidance, they won the 1982 World Series and the National League pennant in 1985 and 1987.

Herzog was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 25, 2010, after being voted in by the Veterans Committee. He was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum as a member of the inaugural class on Aug. 16, 2014.

A major league outfielder from 1956 through 1963, Herzog had a .257 career batting average with 25 home runs and 172 RBIs. As he has said, “Baseball has been good to me since I quit trying to play it.”

If Herzog is St. Louis’ contribution to the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry, Hoyer is the counterpart. He joined the Cubs’ front office in November 2011, working closely with Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein. Hoyer and Epstein had spent eight years together in Boston (2002 to 2009), helping guide the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007.

During Hoyer’s tenure with the Cubs, the organization has traded for first baseman Anthony Rizzo and selected third baseman Kris Bryant and catcher Kyle Schwarber in the draft. Last offseason, the Cubs hired Joe Maddon as manager, signed free-agent pitchers Jon Lester and Jason Hammel, and acquired catcher Miguel Montero. They wound up winning 97 games and reached the National League Championship Series.

The Cubs’ farm system was ranked the best in baseball entering the 2015 season

by ESPN.com, Baseball America, The Sporting News, Baseball Prospectus and Fangraphs. Hoyer and the front office are not willing to rest on their laurels, either. The Cubs on Tuesday night signed versatile Ben Zobrist to a four-year deal and traded Starlin Castro to the Yankees for pitcher Adam Warren.

Hoyer’s visit to USF completes a three-peat as far as Chicago baseball is concerned. Former Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster was the Brown & Gold speaker in 2014, and White Sox great Frank Thomas spoke in 2013.

Our version of the Hot Stove League is sizzling. You won’t want to delay in getting your tickets to either or both events. In fact, they also would make nice stocking stuffers for later this month.

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Joliet Central won more of the battles, but Morris won the war Tuesday – defeating the Steelmen, 99-64, in the boys swimming and diving opener for both teams.

Joliet won seven of the 12 events, but the superior Morris depth won out as the hosts scored at least four points in every race. The Steelmen did not enter diving or the 400 free, allowing Morris to pick up a free 20 points in those events.

It was not simply that Morris had more athletes, however. Sean Smith earned a pair of individual wins, finishing the 50 free in 27.74 and the 100 fly in 1:09.47. He also anchored a winning 400 free team that included Chris Collet, Bailey Rath and Soren Knudsen, and had a time of 4:47.83. Smith, Rath, Collet and Jeremy Gregorec were second with a time of 2:06.04 in the 200 free relay.

“For my first meet, it was what I was expecting. Next

meet, I wanna prove a little bit more,” Smith said. “Good to get the first one out of the way so that I know how to improve myself, fix things.”

Joliet captured the first two relays, getting winning times of 2:11.40 from Jason Miller, Ben Chambers, Erik Fosen and Jonathon Yanello in the 200 medley and 1:53.70 from Yanello, Navalon Battle, Fosen and Chambers in the 200 free. December season. I thought Sean swam great. Chris Collet, who’s a new swimmer to us, he had a great meet. A lot of kids beat out my expectations.”

Mason Dant was an individual double winner for the Morris junior varsity team, which made it a sweep by defeating the Steelmen, 65-27.

Lewis’ Schneider named third-team All-American SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – Lewis sophomore middle hitter Aly Schneider has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-America third team.

She helped the 20th-ranked Flyers (31-5) to a Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. Lewis went on to earn the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional. The Flyers topped Grand Valley State in the first round before falling to eventual region champion Rockhurst in five sets in the semifinals.

Schneider was one of two GLVC All-America selections.

She was among four sophomores or freshmen selected to the top three squads.

She totaled 136 blocks (1.05 a set), eighth most all-time and

third most in the rally scoring era in school history. Her total ranked 25th in the nation in the category. She led Lewis and ranked 43rd in the nation in hitting percentage (.341). She had 16 and 19 kills in Lewis’ two NCAA Tournament matches to earn NCAA Midwest Regional honors.

For the season, Schneider averaged 2.74 kills a set with 16 matches of double-digit kills.

Postseason hopes nearly dashed, players rallying for strong finish

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Jarvis Jenkins conceded the playoffs are a “long shot.” Kyle Long referred to “pride,” often reserved in sports for teams out of contention.

After their 26-20 overtime loss Sunday to the 49ers, the Bears aren’t mathematically eliminated; but the brief, postseason fervor that swept through Chicago last week has disappeared after a season that began with low expectations – and briefly was recalibrated by a young team – crashed with a thud Sunday.

“Finishing strong,” Jenkins said of what the 5-7 Bears hope to accomplish in the final four games. “Coach Fox talked about finishing 9-7. …

Obviously, the playoffs are a long shot. We can’t go in these last couple of games saying the season is over. These last four games are definitely going to be a test of character for the whole team.”

Long pointed to the growth of so many young players.

“I’ve seen the preparation they’ve put in, the hard work,

the long hours,” Long said.

“These young guys stepping up. Eddie Goldman, yesterday, he’s becoming a dominant player. There’s a lot of guys, unseen guys, unheard-of guys that are coming in and making big-time plays for us and are progressing.”

When Long was reminded that Sunday’s loss dropped the Bears to 1-9 in their past 10 games at Soldier Field, his expression wasn’t one of a player with nothing left to play for.

Jenkins, who like Long has taken on a leadership role in a young defensive line room, is focused on delivering Fox’s message: “You’re not going to be perfect. We just strive to be perfect enough to win.”

Added Jenkins: “Big plays are going to happen. Mistakes are going to happen. You have to go out there with the mentality that, ‘I’m going to make that next big play.’ You have to have a strong mentality that we’re not going to give up another big play. That is something we have to work on. When one big play happens, we can’t let another big play happen. If we want to be a good football team, we defi-

nitely have to fix that fast.”

Of course, it was a pair of explosive 49ers touchdowns just five plays apart that sank the Bears on Sunday.

As the 49ers did to them, the Bears have a chance to play spoiler beginning with NFC East-leading Washington bringing its winless road record to Soldier Field.

Then it’s the Vikings, who dealt the Bears one of their toughest losses and are trying to wrestle away the division from the perennial favorite Packers in Week 15. Then they’ll face former Bears coach Lovie Smith and his Buccaneers in Week 16, who are clinging to a wild-card spot.

Fans might not want to underestimate just the sheer camaraderie that Long said has blossomed under Fox this season.

“No matter if the sky’s falling around me, I know that I’ve got the guys that are in that locker room,” Long said.

“When I walk out onto the field with that group of guys, group of men, there’s nothing I’d rather do, and there’s no other people I’d rather go out on the field with.”

The Bears placed tight end Martellus Bennett on injured reserve Tuesday and signed former Cardinals and Browns tight end Rob Housler.

Bennett missed the Week 12 game against the Packers with a rib injury. He practiced in full last week and was injured during the loss to the 49ers. He left the game, but returned to play 60 of the 78 snaps.

In 11 games this season, Bennett led the Bears with 53 catches. He had 439 receiving yards and three touchdowns, but only eight catches for 58 yards in his past three games. In the games he had participated in, Bennett played 94.6 percent of offensive snaps.

Housler, a 6-5, 250-pound fifth-year tight end, had one catch in six games for the Browns last season. His best years came in 2012 and 2013 with the Cardinals. He had 45 catches for 417 yards in ’12 and 39 receptions for 454

yards and his lone career touchdown in ’13.

Zach Miller will be the No. 1 tight end going forward, and the Bears have rookie Khari Lee, but Miller was limited last week in practice and during the 49ers game with a rib injury.

Bennett has one year left on his contract and is set to make $5.085 million in base salary next season. He missed time in the offseason training program because he wanted a new contract and, according to a Chicago Tribune report, was upset last month with the way he was being used in the red zone.

The Bears also brought quarterback Matt Blanchard back to the practice squad and released Justin Worley.

Blanchard, a Lake Zurich native, was with the team in 2013.

Rookie offensive tackle Tayo Fabuluje has been removed from the reserve/ suspended list, but the team has a roster exemption for him for the time being.

Kane extends point streak as Blackhawks beat Predators 4-1 The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Patrick Kane extended his point streak to 23 games with an empty-net goal with 1:36 left, and the Blackhawks beat the Nashville Predators, 4-1, on Tuesday night.

Teuvo Teravainen and Andrew Shaw each had a goal and an assist for the Hawks, and Corey Crawford made 36 saves. Dennis Rasmussen scored in his NHL debut.

Auguste, Jackson lead ND past Stony Brook

Michigan State’s Izzo unsure about being No. 1

Tom Izzo has mixed emotions about Michigan State being ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll.

“I’ve been around long enough to not put much merit into something that happens in December when you really want it to happen in March or April,” Izzo told the AP in a telephone interview Monday afternoon. “It’s more for the fans and the media, but it’s also a privilege and an honor for the program.”

The Spartans (9-0) are atop the poll for the first time since early in the 2013-14 season.

Michigan State jumped from third to a runaway first following losses last week by then-Nos. 1 and 2 Kentucky and Maryland. The Spartans received 62 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel.

Kansas (6-1) moved from No. 4 to No. 2 and received a first-place vote even though it lost to Michigan State by six points last month in Chicago.

“I do think Kansas deserves that vote,” Izzo insisted. “They probably outplayed us for over half of that game.

And, they have the most experience and the most depth.”

North Carolina, the preseason No. 1, jumped from ninth to third and received a pair of No. 1 votes.

For example, you can wear a wireless headset to hear the TV better while keeping the volume normal for other family members. flavors Variations on traditional latkes take their influence from other cultures

Cinnamon Sugar Latkes

round Hanukkah, we usually spend a lot of time thinking up new things to top our latkes with. After all, the potato pancakes themselves are pretty simple. Shred some potatoes, bind them into patties, then fry until golden and crisp. Now bring on the sour cream and apple sauce and smoked salmon and anything else you can dream up (caviar is awfully nice!).

But this year, we decided to come at it from the other side. We created delicious latkes that build their flavor from the inside out. All we had to do was look to other cultures for inspiration.

And so, we have Greek-inspired latkes studded with shredded zucchini and chunks of feta cheese. And we have Indian sweet potato latkes spiked with a hit of curry powder. And for an ultimate doughnut-like decadence, we created cinnamon-sugar latkes, too.

All of these variations are built from our excellent classic latke recipe (right), which does a great job drying the shredded potatoes (the key for crisping when fried).

Cinnamon Sugar Latkes

Zesty Zucchini and Feta Latkes

Curried Sweet Potato Latkes

Leave out the onion. Stir 1 teaspoon of cinnamon into the matzo meal. Once the latkes are fried, let drain for 1 minute, then dredge in cinnamon-sugar. Serve with apple sauce or cranberry sauce.

Shred 1 medium zucchini and squeeze along with the potatoes and onions.

Stir in 1 to 2 teaspoons hot sauce (or to taste) and ½ cup crumbled feta cheese with the egg when mixing together.

Use 2 pounds sweet potatoes in place of the Russet potatoes. Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons of curry powder into the matzo meal mixture.

Classic Latkes

Start to finish: 45 minutes Makes 12 latkes 2 pounds Russet potatoes 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 tablespoon potato starch ½ cup matzo meal Peanut or grapeseed oil, for frying 2 eggs, beaten Applesauce or sour cream, to serve Using a food processor fitted with the shredding disc, grate the potatoes. Alternatively, you can use the large holes of a box grater, but the food processor makes for a better textured, more even shred.

Working in batches, spread some of the grated potatoes and chopped onion evenly over a clean kitchen towel. Roll the towel up like a jelly roll and, holding it over a sink or bowl, twist to squeeze out as much moisture as possible. Unroll the towel and transfer to a medium bowl. Repeat with remaining potatoes and onion. Set aside.

In a small bowl, combine the salt, potato

starch and matzo meal. Whisk or stir to ensure there are no lumps of potato starch.

Set aside.

In a large, deep skillet, heat 1/3 inch of oil to 350 degrees F. While the oil is heating, set a cooling rack over a rimmed baking sheet. This is where your latkes will drain, so have it near your pan. Though latkes are best eaten right away, you can hold your latkes in a 200 degrees F oven for up to 1 hour. If that is necessary, turn your oven on at this point.

When the oil is hot, combine the potato-onion mixture with the matzo-potato starch mixture and the eggs. Form into 12 3-inch patties, and fry in batches of 3 to 4, for 3 to 4 minutes a side, or until deep golden brown and crispy. Transfer to the cooling rack and repeat with the remaining potato mixture.

Serve immediately with applesauce or sour cream.

Nutrition information per serving: 170 calories; 90 calories from fat (53 percent of total calories); 10 g fat (2 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 35 mg cholesterol; 330 mg sodium; 19 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 2 g sugar; 4 g protein.

Bridge Magazine (bridgemagazine. co.uk) started in England in May 1926, which makes it the longest-running in the world. (The Bridge World began in October 1929, but has more issues because it was published during World War II.) Last year, Bridge Magazine went to e-mail only and exploded in size. For example, the November 2015 issue ran to 140 pages!

There are tournament reports, amusing and instructive articles, a bidding panel with readers’ prize competition, deals to bid with your partner, and quizzes, one for a voucher.

Today’s deal comes from a defensive quiz by Julian Pottage. You are East, defending against four spades. West cashes two top hearts, dropping declarer’s doubleton queen, then continues with the heart jack. Rather than gnash your teeth because partner did not give you a diamond ruff, plan your defense. When you enter the auction after an opponent opens with a pre-empt, assume partner has six or seven points. Here, South jumps to four spades, trusting North to have a useful card or two.

This is much easier on paper than it would be at the table, because you probably took your time to consider your three choices: discard another club, ruff low or ruff high.

Let’s look at each. If you discard, declarer ruffs and plays a spade to dummy’s king. Suppose you play low.

South crosses to his hand with a club and drives out your spade ace. He wins the next club, draws trumps, and claims.

It is the same if you ruff low. But what if you ruff high and lead a club?

Declarer wins and plays a spade to dummy’s king, but must then lead a diamond, which you ruff to defeat the contract.

They looked at the amount of weight gained over 10 years. Smokers who quit gained an average of 18 pounds over 10 years. Smokers who continued to smoke also gained weight over the long term – an average of eight pounds over 10 years. So, over 10 years, the quitters gained 10 more pounds than those who continued to smoke.

In other words, most of the weight gain in quitters occurred in the first year. And even those who continued to smoke gained weight.

If you’re a smoker and want to quit, you might want to have a plan to keep potential weight gain in check. For example: • Start to exercise before you quit smoking.

Walking is a great way to stay active, lose weight and distract your mind from cigarette cravings.

• If you are overweight already, change your diet now to eat healthier and cut down on total daily calories.

• Carry a water bottle with you and take a sip when you feel hungry or have the urge to smoke.

• Pack healthy, low-calorie snacks that will satisfy the oral urge to smoke or snack. Baby carrots, celery sticks and grapes are good choices.

In sum, the benefits of quitting smoking outweigh the risks of gaining weight after quitting. Don’t let a fear of weight gain stop you from quitting.

quit smoking, but I’m worried about gaining weight. Is it possible to quit smoking without packing on the pounds?

Dear Reader: Smokers do tend to gain some weight when they quit.

Why? Nicotine reduces appetite and revs up metabolism (the rate at which the body burns food). Breaking free of nicotine allows appetite to come back and also slows metabolism. In addition, many people substitute food for cigarettes when they quit.

By definition, an unhealthy weight is not good for your health. But quitting smoking is good for a person’s health.

So the question is: How do the health benefits of quitting smoking compare to the health risks of gaining weight after quitting? Based on studies of hundreds of thousands of people, that question has been answered: Weight gained from quitting smoking does not pose nearly as serious a threat to health as smoking does.

Quitting smoking, for example, lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke and other blood vessel disease despite any subsequent weight gain. The same reduction in risk holds true for people with diabetes. That’s surprising, given gaining weight can worsen diabetes, which increases the risk for cardiovascular disease on its own.

Of course, your risk of heart disease and stroke is reduced even more if you quit smoking and don’t gain weight. But the point is you still benefit from quitting, even if you gain weight.

On average, people gain about five to 10 pounds in the six months after they quit smoking.

But what happens over the 10 years after that?

Dear Abby: I have been with my husband for almost 14 years. I’m a sound sleeper, and I suspect he has been having sex with me while I’m sleeping. I have woken up without clothes on, my undergarments askew or the waistband “rolled on.”
