JOLIET – City Council members pointed to the recent string of shootings in the area – including the Dec. 2 double homicide – to make their case for more Joliet police officers during a budget meeting Monday night.

“What do you think the impression is of our city when there’s a triple shooting and WGN News is out here covering the story?” District 2 Councilman Bob O’Derkirk said. “When people see that on TV who aren’t from Joliet, they aren’t going to decipher whether it happened in a good part of town or bad part of town … They’ll think it’s Joliet. It hurts all of us.”

City Manager Jim Hock’s proposed $279 million budget for 2015 initially didn’t include the police chief’s earlier request for additional officers dedicated to neighborhood policing, but the city found that money during a special meeting Monday night to review the recently proposed budget.

A handful of residents from the St. John’s and Cunningham Neighborhood Associations attended the meeting to speak on the police shortage and other matters, but city staff preempted with an announcement that the city moved some money around to hire more officers.

For the first time in years, the fire department has a full headcount, Hock said, so they are expected to save on future overtime costs. About $600,000 will be cut from the fire department’s overtime budget, and a good portion of that will go toward the hiring of additional police officers, he said.

The money will be used to

hire three new Neighborhood Oriented Policing Team officers – one to patrol the Louis Joliet Mall, one on the east side and a third on the far west side – along with a NOPT sergeant and a new training sergeant.

NOPT officers currently patrol in one- or two-person teams in the areas of St. Pat’s, Cathedral Area and Evergreen Terrace. On the east side, NOPT police patrol boundaries near Forest Park, Richards Street and Des Plaines Street.

Residents demand Rialto funding be withheld amid marquee controversy

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Cunningham Neighborhood Association President John Sheridan requested Monday night that the city of Joliet withhold funding from the Rialto Square Theater unless officials there adequately address recent criticisms about the theater’s new marquee design.

The city’s 2015 proposed budget includes $600,000 for the Rialto to subsidize the cost of operations.

Sheridan said the city could put that money to better use – such as with the hiring of more police officers. He said theater officials should listen to the voices of taxpayers about the marquee.

The comments made Monday by Sheridan and a few others were the result of an online uproar over the design of the future Rialto marquee, publicly unveiled last month. Ed Czerkies, a retired construction magnate, announced a $350,000 donation to replace the marquee. The design – which provides a place on the marque for him to honor his parents – has angered many residents, who have taken to social media sites like Facebook to complain.

ningham Neighborhood Associations, who showed up at the Joliet City Council’s special budget meeting Monday night, to talk about the Rialto marquee issue and other matters.

Longtime Joliet Junior College board member Andy Mihelich, who’s making a second run for Joliet mayor in April, also called on the City Council to make the funding available to the Rialto contingent upon theater officials meeting with residents about the marquee and making changes to the design in response to public criticism.

Earlier this month, Rialto General Manager Randy Green said he wasn’t surprised by the reaction to the new design.

And, despite the criticisms, the Rialto Square Theater is moving forward with it, he has said.

No council members or city officials publicly commented on the Rialto at the meeting.

He said it was his understanding when the city brought back the NOPT program a few years back that the program would slowly be built back into the budget, but that hasn’t been the case.

While there’s no question the city needs more police officers, Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante said, the city “has to walk before [it] can run.”

“We’re not going to replace them all over night,” Giarrante said. “You can have a police officer on every corner and it won’t stop every crime.”

Other council members balked at the idea of the city budgeting $38,000 next year for a new eight-page, quarterly newsletter to improve communication with residents, when that money could be put to better use – such as cleaning up streets and entryways into the downtown area.

Councilman Jim McFarland said he’d like to see that money go toward the hiring of college students over the summer to clean up the city – and its image.

Christmas tree merchants expect strong sales this year Christmas tree tips

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com Shoppers are expected to buy more Christmas trees this year than last and one reason, tree sellers say, is because real trees make for a more memorable family experience.

Because of the earlier holiday shopping season, more businesses selling Christmas trees anticipate a significant growth over last year’s sales, according to the American Christmas Tree Association.

Picking out a live tree over an artificial one can be a special adventure for families, tree farm owners say.

“It’s just a family thing instead of opening up a plastic box and putting up a plastic tree,” said Karen Anderson, owner of Plainfield-based Anderson Tree Farm. “Everything is so plastic in this world.”

Every year, 25 to 30 million live Christmas trees are sold nationwide. Close to 350 million are growing on tree farms, according to the National Christmas Tree Association.

Anderson Tree Farm and Tammen Treeberry Farm in Wilmington are seeing consistent and strong sales in Christmas trees this year. Anderson said a tree farm in Woodridge this year got so busy that customers flocked to her farm instead.

Weather can impact sales, since customers have to go outdoors to cut down or pick out trees, said Bruce Tammen, owner of Tammen Treeberry Farm. This year, the weather has been better.

“The weather was good [last year], but then it turned bad and sales went down. …

Our business highly depends on the weather,” Tammen said.

Q Put it in a stand filled with water within a half hour of cutting it.

Q Look for signs of dryness or irritation.

month, she said, but they need a while to grow before they can go home with customers. Anderson said when her store plants a 5-year-old tree, it takes 10 years for it to

reach 6 feet in height.

There are generally two types of Christmas trees: fir trees with soft needle-like leaves and spruce trees with prickly needles, she said.

Tammen said some of the commonly sold species are Douglas fir, Balsam fir and Scotch pine.

The American Christmas Tree Association recommends checking for broken branches, insects and dirt on trees. The association also recommends customers check whether they have enough space in their home so a tree is not near a fire hazard.

It also pays to check whether sellers accept credit cards. If a seller doesn’t accept credit cards, it could be a sign the merchant is selling leftover trees, according to the association.

Tammen said the pleasant scent from real Christmas trees over artificial ones is desirable among customers.

The experience of going out and cutting one down is another plus.

Anderson said the customers at her tree farm also enjoy the hands-on experience.

“It’s a nice memory for the kids,” she said.

Area sidewalks will be safer Communities in Will and Grundy counties to receive funds for improvements

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com Safer sidewalks are set to be constructed in five communities in Will and Grundy counties, thanks to federal funds from the Illinois Safe Routes to School Program.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced Saturday that Illinois was awarded $5.9 million in federal money for the program, according to a news release from the governor’s office. The money will provide funds for more than 50 projects statewide to create safer routes for children to take to get to and from school.

transportation alternative.

In Will County, the village of Romeoville is receiving $88,000 to construct a sidewalk connection between South Budler Road and North Budler Road across Taylor Road. The construction also will include accessible crossings and ramps on the north side of Taylor Road.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak said the project is part of a series of improvements along Weber Road.

“It’s an important connection that would make it safer for children who live south of Taylor to walk to those two elementary schools north, Creekside and Lakewood Falls elementary schools,” Noak said.

The city of Crest Hill is receiving $160,000 to connect

an existing subdivision with Richland School District 88a, and $24,000 for the education, maintenance and promotion of the project. The city of Beecher is receiving $118,400 to add school zone speed limits and crosswalk signs on several streets.

In Grundy County, Coal City and Coal City Community Unit School District 1 will receive a combined $160,000, while South Wilmington will receive $157,268 for sidewalk improvements near South Wilmington school district schools.

Schools located in the Coal City neighborhoods where sidewalks will be improved are the elementary and intermediate schools, both a few blocks away from the local library.

Joliet police stymied in shooting investigations by silent witnesses

A big reason why is because people in the neighborhoods where the incidents have occurred won’t say anything, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said.

“The people in the neighborhoods don’t want to talk to us,” Roechner said. “We need those people to come forward.

We’re still doing interviews, but we’re not any closer to making an arrest.”

Keon D. Kelly, 30, of Lockport and Tariq J. Purnell, 17, of Joliet died from multiple gunshot wounds. Purnell was the second Joliet Township High School student killed in a shooting within six weeks.

Another shooting Thursday night led to two men being struck in their legs by bullets that were fired from a car as they stood at Sherman and Osgood streets in Joliet.

Roechner said the police department has not found a connection between the two incidents.

In another unrelated incident, a Joliet man has since turned himself in to authorities after police said he fatally shot one person and critically wounded another at a party in the 500 block of Chicago Street.

Roechner urged people to not retaliate for the shooting deaths.

“A lot of times, they think that’s the best answer,” he said. “Instead, let us do our jobs so we can lock these people up with their help.”

Jolene Franciskovich, Coal City library director, said the library partners with local schools to offer services to children, such as book clubs and local history classes. Students from the elementary and intermediate schools come to the library occasionally before the start of the school day, she added.

Matt Fritz, Coal City village administrator, said the village plans to construct more than 4,000 linear feet of sidewalk by next summer and hopes to start construction by spring.

New sidewalks will be added on Fourth, Third, Kankakee, Garfield and Shabbona streets, and flashing speed limit signs will be installed on Broadway Street, he added.

intendent, said the school district and village will each match $20,000 in funding for the sidewalk improvements.

Those matching funds, combined with the $160,000 from federal funds, means up to $200,000 for sidewalk improvements.

“Every student in that area will have a continuous sidewalk to the elementary and intermediate schools. That was the goal of the grant,” Bugg said. “Student safety is always our No. 1 priority. Anything we can do to encourage our students to get physical exercise by biking or walking to school is important.”

LEMONT – On Dec. 3, the Village of Lemont received the Governor’s Hometown Award for Kops N Kidz Day, a day of activities and safety education for children and families to interact with local police and emergency service personnel.

Award recipients are selected by volunteer judges who review and rank applications based on a variety of factors, including local need, volunteer participation, use of resources and the results achieved, according to a news release from the village.

“It takes an enormous amount of volunteers and the support of the Police Department and Lemont Park District to make this program a success and I thank them all for their efforts to bring this event to the community each year,” Mayor Brian Reaves said in the news release, adding

Early cold weather brings with it heating problems

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The early cold weather is causing more problems for heating systems at homes than in previous years.

“It’s colder earlier this year so the systems are running longer,” said Rick Cronholm, owner of Johansen Heating & Air in Joliet.

With the sub-freezing temperatures have come more emergency calls for HVAC systems that aren’t checked regularly, Cronholm said. Installers have had to come out more often during off hours to install new systems from Johansen.

“A lot of homeowners are not proactive in checking their systems regularly,” Cronholm said. “The biggest thing that all homeowners need to do is have their

furnace or boiler system checked and cleaned once a year.”

Changing the filters in the HVAC system also is important for conserving energy, Cronholm said, adding that homeowners should use advanced thermostats, if they have them, to lower the temperature during hours when people aren’t at home.

Cronholm also said he was surprised at how many homes don’t have carbon monoxide detectors.

Plainfield Fire Protection District Fire Inspector Mary Kay Ludemann said guarding against carbon monoxide poisoning should be one of the main safety priorities for homeowners.

In addition to issues with central heating systems, space heaters, unclean ovens and other sources of heat cause major safety concerns.

Police say investigation continues in Wilmington bicyclist’s death THE HERALD–NEWS WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP – Illinois State Police are still investigating the weekend death of a Wilmington man struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle.

John P. Baggio, 32, of Wilmington was pronounced dead at 3:08 a.m. Sunday at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in

Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy on Baggio was performed Sunday and preliminary reports show multiple injuries due to the vehicle striking him, according to the coroner’s office. Cause and manner of death will be determined pending autopsy, toxicology and police reports.

Baggio was riding a bicy-

cle on West Frontage Road just south of Lorenzo Road in Wilmington Township when he was struck by a vehicle, the coroner’s office said Sunday.

Authorities said the incident appears to be an accident. Illinois State Police said Monday afternoon that no charges had been brought in the matter, and the vehicle’s driver was not injured.

MORRIS – Zachary Beatty has plans to bring a new selfserve ice machine to Morris next year and with an unanimous vote last week of a zoning variance by the Morris City Council, the installation at 220 Bedford Road is one step closer.

“I have a relative that owns one down south,” Beatty said last week. “They started being popular in the southern part of the country, and they are working their way up.”

The building will be built on the northeast corner of the Echo Bowling Lanes east parking lot between the bowling alley and Walgreens. The building is 9 foot wide by 26 foot long and 15 foot high.

It will accept credit cards or cash and will dispense either a 16 pound bag of ice or 20 pounds of ice deposited directly into the customers cooler for $2. It also will offer water at 25 cents a gallon.

A variance was needed for the rear yard setback of 37 feet as well as a side yard setback variance of 10 feet to keep the building on the edge of the lot.

Bill Cheshareck, building and zoning officer, said without the variance the only place the building could be located would end up in the middle of the parking lot.

Beatty decided to get involved and open his first one in Morris even though he’s from Somonauk.

“I plan to start in Morris and work opening them in the Illinois River Valley,” he said.

“My uncle lives in Morris, and I’ve considered moving there.”

Beatty said he hopes to market to boaters who come to Morris to put their boat in the Illinois River, as well as to local residents who have a need for ice for their parties and events.

Beatty will have to run water and sewer to the location, as well as get electrical service.

He plans to have it up and running by the end of February.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Clarissa Marion Eberhart; son, Jeffrey (Cindy) Eberhart; 6 grandchildren, Jody Eberhart, Richard Eberhart, Anthony (Toni) Eberhart, Robert Eberhart, Thomas Eberhart, and Daniel Eberhart; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Karly enjoyed playing travel soccer, hula-hooping and especially loved softball, which she played all her life. She will be remembered

Survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Linda (nee Juricic) Rymsza; children, Amanda (Erik) Brown, Stephanie Rymsza (fiance, Michael Schronski), and Robert Rymsza, Jr.; mother, Evelyn (Birmingham) Rymsza of Missouri; sister, Judy (Paul) Svendsen of Missouri; brother-in-law, Larry (Valerie) Juricic; sisters-in-law, Debbie (Larry) Magolan, and Donna (Ray) Randich all of Joliet; nephews and nieces, Troy, Taylor, and Tara Price, Luke Juricic, Ben, and Jessica Magolan, Zak, Lauren, and Daniel Randich all of Joliet, and Jan (Jeff) Bain, Greg Svendsen, Trish (Kevin) Feeney, and Ginny (Mike) Kempf all of Missouri.

Preceded in death by his father, Joseph E. Rymsza; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Theodore and Lillian (nee Valek) Juricic.

Bob was a graduate of JTHS in 1966. He was in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1969-1972, when he was honorably discharged. He is a member of the American Legion, Harwood Post #5.

Retired in April 2013 from Dr. Pepper Snapple Group after 40 years of service as a transportation driver, who drove over 3,900,000 miles.

Bob enjoyed endless weekends at Wilmington Recreation Club camping and fishing with his family. His greatest joy was spending countless hours fishing in the boat with his children and winning numerous fishing contests. Bob also enjoyed the Lake Erie fishing trips and euchre games with close family and friends.

His entire family offers their gratitude to Drs. Waszak, Gunderson, Mihalakakos, Winkleman, Walsh, Cziperle, and Gustafson and their staffs; to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, 4th floor ICU staff; and Dr. J.D. Wright and the staff at Hospice for all of the care that was provided to Bob these past 6 months.

To the many family and friends who constantly visit and give endless words of encouragement, support, and love to Bob and our family, thank you.

Rauner wants farmer to run agriculture department

CHICAGO – Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner said Monday he strongly prefers to have a farmer take over the Illinois Department of Agriculture and that he wouldn’t impose sales taxes that would put Illinois’ farmers at a disadvantage compared with those in other states.

Speaking to a meeting of the Illinois Farm Bureau in Chicago, the Winnetka Republican said farmers have helped Illinois weather tough economic times and the state needs an agriculture sector that’s “booming.”

“We need our farmers to be competitive,” he said.

The issue of who should lead the state’s Agriculture Department arose several times during Rauner’s campaign against Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn this year.

Rauner took shots at Agriculture Director Bob Flider, whom Quinn appointed to the post after Flider lost a 2010 re-election bid to the Illinois House. Flider, who didn’t have farming experience, then voted for a Quinn-backed 67 percent income-tax increase after earlier opposing it.

Rauner said he has several farmers on his transition team, and he urged Monday’s crowd to recommend people for top state jobs who have expertise and experience in the industry.

“I want farmers running our Agriculture Department to benefit farmers,” Rauner said. He later told reporters his “very strong preference” is to have an active farmer as his ag director.

DEA agent struck by vehicle during arrest attempt

CHICAGO – A federal agent is being treated at a hospital after he was struck by a vehicle on Chicago’s South Side while trying to arrest a drug suspect.

Officials say the Drug Enforcement Administration sustained a head injury and a broken leg and was taken to a hospital in Oak Lawn. The driver, suspected of transporting cocaine, struck the agent who was on foot while driving out of a gas station where agents were preparing to make an arrest. The vehicle later was abandoned, and drugs were found inside.

The DEA said in a news release that gunshots were fired during the incident, and a suspect was treated at another hospital.

The U of C said in a news release that the universities are working on creative ways to collaborate with the library. The schools involved are Northwestern University, DePaul University, Loyola University, Chicago State University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology.

The release said the schools hope to develop programs involving research and teaching in fields ranging from violence prevention to health care to climate change.

Afghanistan mired in war as U.S. combat command ends

By LYNNE O’DONNELL The Associated Press KABUL, Afghanistan – American and NATO troops closed their operational command in Afghanistan on Monday, lowering flags in a ceremony to mark the formal end of their combat mission in a country still mired in war 13 years after the U.S.-led invasion toppled the Taliban regime for harboring those responsible for 9/11.

The closing of the command, which oversaw the dayto-day operations of coalition combat forces, is one of the final steps in a transition to a support and training role that begins Jan. 1. But with President Barack Obama’s recent move authorizing U.S. forces in Afghanistan to carry out military operations against Taliban and al-Qaida targets, America’s longest war will in fact continue for at least another two years.

Obama’s decision to give American forces a more active role than previously envi-

sioned suggests the U.S. still is concerned about the Afghan government’s ability to fight.

And agreements signed by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to allow U.S. and NATO troops to remain in the country are seen as a red line by the Taliban, further narrowing any hope of peace talks.

Not only are the Taliban a resilient insurgency, a new generation of extremists inspired by Osama bin Laden threatens the entire region.

American forces also are involved now in a burgeoning military campaign against Islamic State group militants in Syria and Iraq, where Obama had hoped to end combat operations three years ago.

As NATO’s International Security Assistance Force’s Joint Command lowered its flag in the capital, the Taliban carried out yet another bloody attack, this time killing a police officer and four civilians at a police station in southern Afghanistan.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told The As-

sociated Press that the group would continue to fight “until all foreign troops have left Afghanistan.”

“The Americans want to extend their mission in Afghanistan, the motive being to keep the war going for as long as possible,” Mujahid said. “And for as long as they do, the Taliban will continue their fight against the foreign and [Afghan] government forces.”

From Jan. 1, the coalition will maintain a force of 13,000 troops in Afghanistan, down from a peak of about 140,000 in 2011. As of Dec. 1, there were some 13,300 NATO troops in the country.

Up to 10,800 U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan for the first three months of next year, 1,000 more than previously planned, said a NATO official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss troop deployments. By the end of 2015, however, American officials say the U.S. troop total will shrink to 5,500, and to near zero by the end of 2016.

High court rejects BP appeal of spill settlement

By JANET McCONNAUGHEY The Associated Press NEW ORLEANS – The Supreme Court is leaving in place BP’s multibillion-dollar settlement with lawyers for businesses and residents over the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The justices did not comment Monday in rejecting the London-based oil giant’s arguments that lower courts misinterpreted settlement terms and put BP on the hook to pay inflated and bogus claims by businesses.

The court’s decision makes the economic and property damage settlement final, starting a six-month deadline for filing claims, said plaintiffs’ attorney Joe

BP PLC wanted the court to consider whether people and businesses seeking payments under the settlement included some who haven’t actually suffered any injury related to the spill.

A district court and an appeals court ruled that, under the settlement BP agreed to, businesses do not have to prove they were directly harmed by the spill to collect money – only that they made less money in the three to eight months after the spill than in a comparable prespill period.

BP’s Macondo well blew up on April 20, 2010, killing 11 men. An estimated 103 million to 176 million gallons

of oil spewed into the Gulf of Mexico before the miledeep well was capped July 15, 2010. Lawyers for BP and the government agree that 34 million gallons was captured before it could pollute coastal marshes and fishing grounds.

“Today’s ruling is a huge victory for the Gulf, and should finally put to rest BP’s two-year attack on its own settlement,” lead plaintiffs’ attorneys Stephen J. Herman and James P. Roy said.

The settlement doesn’t have a cap, but BP initially estimated it would pay about $7.8 billion to resolve the claims. BP said it can no longer give a reliable estimate for total cost. The company, which made separate settle-

ments for medical claims and seafood-related business claims, has paid more than $13 billion in claims by individuals, businesses and government entities and another $14 billion-plus on response and cleanup, according to its oil spill website.

BP remains concerned “that the program has made awards to claimants that suffered no injury from the spill – and that the lawyers for these claimants have unjustly profited as a result,” BP spokesman Goeff Morrell said in an emailed statement.

He added, “We will therefore continue to advocate for the investigation of suspicious or implausible claims and to fight fraud where it is uncovered.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS JERUSALEM – Israeli lawmakers unanimously voted Monday to dissolve parliament, officially ending the legislature’s term two years ahead of schedule and kicking off the country’s election campaign ahead of a March 17 nationwide vote.

A week after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government dramatically disintegrated, the 120seat Knesset voted, 93-0, favor of disbanding and ending one of the shortest serving parliaments in Israeli history.

But a growing coalition of anti-Netanyahu factions threatens to depose the leader.

Israel’s government, which took office in early 2013, had been riven by divisions from the outset over major issues facing the country. Netanyahu’s fractious center-right Cabinet had been bickering for weeks over the budget, a housing tax break and a bill that would enshrine into law Israel’s status as a Jewish state.

Netanyahu wants to secure a fourth term as premier by increasing support for his hardline Likud Party. He hopes to secure a strong majority for a “national bloc” that includes his traditional allies of ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s nationalist Yisrael Beitenu faction and the hard line Jewish Home party, which is strongly linked to the West Bank settler movement.

This bloc tends to take a hard line in peace talks with the Palestinians.

In the last vote, the parties earned a combined 61 out of 120 seats in parliament. The majority proved too slim for Netanyahu to rule effectively, and he was forced to reach out to two centrist parties to shore up his majority. Netanyahu’s feuds with these parties led to his decision to fire their ministers and call a new election.

BERKELEY, Calif. – Protests in New York and Missouri have died down, but angry crowds in one California city famous for activism spent much of the weekend blocking traffic and clashing with police in this ultra-liberal bastion thousands of miles from the where Michael Brown and Eric Garner were killed.

Although many activists in other parts of the country have gone home, protests in Berkeley and Oakland are still active, reflecting the area’s long history of protest dating back to the 1960s.

The crowds that came out to protest in Berkeley numbered only a few hundred, but some are not college students or residents so much as fulltime demonstrators who protest anything – war, prison conditions and economic inequality – and sometimes use demonstrations as a pretext for violence and vandalism, just as they did during the Occupy Wall Street movement.

“There was a pretty vocal sentiment there about keep this a peaceful protest and stay on message,” he said.

Another peaceful protester was struck by a hammer and slightly injured when he tried to stop looting.

In keeping with the city’s protest history, Berkeley leaders have put limits on their police. Officers cannot have search dogs, stun guns or helicopters and are restricted in the type of gear they can wear, said police union President Sgt. Chris Stines.

“All of us are out there wearing what we wear on patrol – and as a result, we are getting pretty banged up,” he said, explaining that shin and chest guards and padded vests would help prevent injuries. At least three officers suffered minor injuries.

Stines said he did not believe there was any “legitimate political message” behind Sunday’s protest. “It was just criminal behavior.”

The unrest is not limited to Berkeley. Seattle police arrested seven people Saturday during a protest that included a group trying to block a state highway.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Please reconsider new Rialto sign’s design To the Editor:

It seems in the last few days, many of us have been made aware of the new marquee slated to be installed at the Rialto. My gut reaction to it was immediate: It is ugly.

Apparently, I am not alone in this thought; thousands of people are having the same reaction.

The Rialto is a beautiful building, and we are all proud of it. I have attended many functions, events and shows there. We support it.

So when this design comes to light and people are not happy with it, the right thing

for the board to do is reconsider the design. To tell the citizens of Joliet, “Sorry, too late” shows a great deal of disrespect to the citizens and the patrons. We are insulted by that response.

I believe Mr. Czerkies is a good person, and I sincerely appreciate his generosity.

I would like to believe he would agree to reconsider the design.

I believe it is possible to improve the look of a new marquee so it would be more historically appropriate to the building. The planned design is clumsy, blocky and glaringly obvious. It looks tacky. It looks like something you would find

at a tourist trap, a place such as Coney Island.

A good designer could create something more subtle, with class and architectural relevance that compliments the beauty of the building. I think it could include LED signage capability, done tastefully.

Finally, I cannot believe the only way to honor the donor is to have their name in huge letters on the front of the marquee. Certainly, we can find a more respectful and dignified way to honor his parents.

To the board and staff of the Rialto: Do the right thing.

Reconsider this design.

State minimum wage failure rests on officials involved VIEWS Rich Miller Pretty much every Statehouse finger of blame was pointing north toward Chicago for the minimum wage hike bill’s failure during the legislative veto session, which ended last week.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel does indeed have a lot of explaining to do. His decision to move up a vote to pass a $13-an-hour minimum wage for his city completely undercut Springfield’s efforts to pass a statewide minimum wage capped everywhere at $11 an hour.

Months ago, Emanuel scheduled a vote on raising Chicago’s minimum wage for the week after the General Assembly’s annual fall veto session. After the election, however, retailers, restaurant owners and other business groups agreed to an eventual $11-an-hour statewide

minimum wage – but only if Chicago and other home rule municipalities were not allowed to raise their own local wages above that amount. Proponents say they were within two votes of House passage before the second and final week of veto session, when Emanuel quietly filed paperwork calling for a special hearing on his own minimum wage proposal before the second week kicked off in Springfield.

There was just no way House Speaker Michael Madigan would publicly rebuke his city’s mayor by reversing that ordinance via state law.

It’s just not in his nature to go up against a mayor like that.

Besides, Madigan lost of ton of votes from Chicago legislators who could not or would not risk supporting legislation that “cut” their constituents’ pay.

Even so, Madigan himself shares in the blame here. Yes, he’s not all-powerful, but he probably could’ve passed a minimum wage bill during the spring session. Instead, he

didn’t want to rile up business groups before an election and believed he could use the issue to fire up his party’s base and the unions in the November election.

As Champaign News-Gazette columnist Jim Dey wrote not long ago, former Senate President Phil Rock’s autobiography contains a story that explains Madigan to a “T.” Rock wrote in his book, “Nobody Calls Just to Say Hello,” he wanted to pass a bill guaranteeing women unpaid maternity leave. Rock told Madigan and another House Democrat he’d like to get the issue off the table by passing it. The Senate President believed Madigan was stalling.

“We jousted back and forth, and one of the House members said to me, ‘You know, I’m getting a little tired of you trying to do what’s right all the time.

We’ve got a great political issue here,’ “ Rock wrote.

That’s Mike Madigan: Use an issue for political advantage rather than pass it into law. And he’ll likely use the

minimum wage issue again next year, perhaps by passing a bill he knows will be vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

He also can use the issue to keep organized labor focused on that topic and away from other stuff that Madigan might oppose (such as an electronic trading transaction tax, for instance). Business groups also will be frozen in place in opposition to a minimum wage threat.

But the blame doesn’t end there, of course. As I told you months ago, Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin didn’t want Chicago to pass a $13-an-hour minimum wage ordinance before the election, believing it would undermine their attempt to gin up the city’s vote for the statewide $10-an-hour minimum wage referendum. Politically, this made some sense at the time.

Why would any Chicagoan bother to vote for a $10-anhour minimum wage when it already had been raised to $13?

In reality, though, the minimum wage referendum

didn’t work as planned. And instead of a statewide attempt to partially catch up with Chicago’s minimum wage during veto session, the whole effort fizzled.

The governor announced plans to make the minimum wage hike his final legacy, but he didn’t bother to make sure his ducks were in a row before saying so. And that is Pat Quinn in a nutshell. He’s good at press conferences but not so spectacular at governing.

And, of course, Gov.-elect Rauner’s demand that the General Assembly not pass a minimum wage bill in the veto session also can be blamed for the measure’s failure last week. He’ll have to wear that jacket unless and until he can come up with a plan to actually put something in place.

This was, in the end, a failure of policy, of politics and of governance all around. Lowwage workers deserved better.

Short-handed JCA falls to Rich South

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Coming off a last-second loss Saturday to Providence, where foul trouble beset key players, Joliet Catholic was looking to play smarter Monday night and still maintain its physical approach.

JCA took a 46-43 lead into the fourth quarter, but Rich South opened the final period with a 9-0 run that the Angels couldn’t overcome. They were unable to get the deficit below six points the rest of the game and fell, 71-57, to the visiting Stars.

“We were real tired. We couldn’t push anymore,” JCA sophomore forward Ty Battle said. “We had to keep subbing because everyone was in foul trouble. That slowed us down.”

The Angels only had eight players in uniform. As in Saturday’s game, they played without guard Nicole Ekhomu, sidelined with a back injury.

Ekhomu averaged 14 points a game for last year’s Class 3A runner-up team that went 28-3.

“It’s a little tough, but we have to learn to play without her and just keep running our plays,” Battle said. “We stopped our plays, but we’ve got to keep going.”

Rich South (6-0) was able to penetrate and get to the basket in the fourth quarter, when the Stars outscored JCA, 28-11.

Tierney Lockett got into the lane for two driving layups to start the quarter, and Meagan Howard had a transition layup early in the quarter off a JCA turnover. The Angels (43) closed the gap to 58-52 with three minutes to play, but they wouldn’t get any closer.

“We lost focus,” Battle said.

“We weren’t paying attention.

We were making bad passes.

Our point guard, Mia Farrell, she had four fouls. She sat out a whole quarter. That messed us up.”

Andriana Acosta had 14 points and nine rebounds for JCA. Battle finished with 12 points and eight boards. Farrell and Kennedy Weigt each contributed 10 points.

JCA led by as much as 2717 in the first half, when Weigt sank one of her two 3-pointers in the second quarter.

Lockett scored a game-high 29 points for Rich South. Dasia Evans had 15 points for the Stars, who made 12 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Free throws were a problem for JCA. The Angels were only 6 of 16 from the line in the first half. They finished 21 of 39.

JCA connected on three

3-point shots in the second quarter and played tighter defense to go ahead 31-26 at halftime.

Jnaya Walker’s free throw with nine seconds left in the first quarter gave the Angels a 13-12 lead and started a 9-0 run.

Tsimba Malonga sank a 3-pointer, Weigt hit a baseline jumper after a Rich South turnover, Battle got inside for a layup, and good ball movement for a layup by Malonga put JCA ahead, 21-12.

“Once we’re up we have to keep pushing it,” Battle said.

“We can’t fall behind and let them catch up. We have to keep pushing it all the way.”

Tuck is not the only former Herald-News Player of the Year to be cited this week in NCAA Division I basketball.

On the men’s side, Boise State junior guard Derrick Marks (Plainfield Central) was named Mountain West Player of the Week after he scored 22 points as the Broncos beat Saint Mary’s (Calif.), 82-71, Saturday night to snap the Gaels’ 33-game nonconference home winning streak.

Marks not only led Boise State (52) in points but also in steals and tied for the team lead in rebounds and assists. He hit 10 of 14 shots, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range.

For the season, Marks is shooting .466 from the field, .471 from beyond the arc and .800 from the free-throw line. He is averaging a team-best 15.3 points to go with 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals.

Freshman forward Jasmine Lumpkin (Joliet Catholic) is averaging 5.0 points and 3.4 rebounds for Michigan State (5-2).

For the men, 6-foot-7 senior forward Karrington Ward (Lockport) is averaging 13.6 points in 28.9 minutes for Eastern Michigan (7-1). He is shooting .396 from the field and .724 from the free-throw line.

Ward’s teammate at Lockport, Richaud Holmes, is a senior center for Bowling Green (5-1). He is playing 26.5 minutes and is leading the team in scoring at 12.7 points, rebounding at 8.8 and blocks at 2.7. He is shooting .560 from the floor and .680 from the free-throw line.

In a game earlier this season, Holmes drove down the side of the lane and made a contested layup at the buzzer to give Bowling Green a 64-63 win over Detroit.

Ben Moore (Bolingbrook), a 6-foot8 sophomore forward, is playing 31.9 minutes for SMU (5-3). He is averaging 10.8 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks and is shooting .484 from the field and .727 from the free-throw line.

GOING BOWL-ING

It may not happen, with the way things have been going, but it would be nice to see Aaron Bailey (Bolingbrook) get a few snaps at quarterback for the Illini. He has completed 11 of 22 passes for 118 yards and has rushed for 120 in 32 attempts, a 3.8 average.

The other running back of note is Cameron Stingily (Romeoville), the leading rusher for Northern Illinois (11-2).

The Huskies will take on Marshall (12-1) at 4 p.m. Dec 23 in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Stringily will be attempting to go over 1,000 yards for the season.

At this time when college and professional football hogs the spotlight, basketball is just getting its legs.

You may not have seen it – considering how much good football there was to watch last Saturday – but Bolingbrook graduate Morgan Tuck was outstanding in Connecticut’s nationally televised 76-58 women’s basketball victory over No. 2 Notre Dame.

Tuck, a red-shirt sophomore forward and a former high school All-American, enjoyed her career-best game as she scored 25 points in 35 minutes. She also had three assists and nine rebounds. For her efforts, she was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

For the season, Tuck is averaging 14.3 points and 4.9 rebounds for UConn (6-1). She has scored in double figures in all but one game and is shooting .494 from the field.

Tuck missed all but eight games in 2013-14 because of injury but apparently has returned with her “A” game intact.

Mustangs claim national youth crown SUBMITTED REPORTS It indeed was a big weekend for New Lenox.

Providence Catholic won the Class 7A state football championship on the Saturday after Thanksgiving with a 31-28 victory over Cary-Grove.

That same weekend, the New Lenox Mustangs heavyweight team won the National Youth Football Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida, with a 35-0 triumph over the Oak Lawn Outlaws.

The Mustangs, who have been members of the Southwest Midget Football League for 50 years and have won 11 national championships, opened their bid at Daytona Beach with a 30-26 semifinal victory over the previously unbeaten Berry Wolverines from New Hampshire.

The Mustangs finished 12-2 overall. This marked the 31st consecutive year where they have traveled out of state for a Thanksgiving tournament.

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – It isn’t often that a horde of media members surrounds Bulls star Derrick Rose to discuss nonbasketball-related issues these days. Then again, he never has been the type to draw attention to himself away from the court.

That changed when Rose decided to make a statement by wearing a T-shirt with the words “I Can’t Breathe” while warming up before the Bulls’ game Saturday against the Golden State Warriors at the United Center. It was a reference to the words the late Eric Garner repeatedly said after a police officer put him in a choke hold while arresting him for selling loose cigarettes last summer in New York.

Rose said he didn’t speak after the Bulls lost to the Warriors because he was so angry about the outcome of the game and about the way he played.

On Monday, however, there was nothing else for him to do but discuss his reasoning for making such a statement.

“I’m just happy that people paid attention to it,” Rose said. “I think it touched a lot of people because I grew up in an impoverished area like

that. And sometimes that happens a lot of times. It just touched a lot of people. And I wanted to make sure I got my point across.

“I wouldn’t say I’m going to do it every time; it’s just something I felt. Usually, I stay out of politics and police brutality. I’m not saying all cops are bad or anything. I’m just saying that what happened them days was uncalled for, and I think it hurt a lot of people. It hurt the nation.

“My biggest concern is the kids. I know what they’re thinking right now. I was one of them kids. When you live in an area like that and you don’t got any hope and police are treating you any way . . .

I’m not saying all police are treating kids bad, but when you live in an area like that, it gives you another reason to be bad. My biggest concern is the kids and making sure my son grows up in a safe environment.”

Rose became a father in October 2012, and he said the birth of his son played a major role in his decision to have the shirt made up, then wear it.

“I’m a parent now,” Rose said. “Two years ago, it probably would’ve been different. I probably wouldn’t have worn the shirt. But now that I’m a dad, it changed my outlook on

life, period.

“I don’t want my son growing up being scared of police or even have the thought in his mind that something like that could happen. I have a cousin, [and] that easily could’ve been him or one of our relatives.

It’s sad that people lost their lives over there.”

It’s not the first time Rose has shown a social conscience. Before the season, he made news when he donated $1 million to After School Matters. He also has been outspoken about violence in Chicago, appearing in a commercial for teammate Joakim Noah’s anti-violence campaign.

Rose said he hadn’t heard about all the fallout from the shirt but was glad he was getting support from his teammates and other NBA stars, including LeBron James.

“He’s a huge figure,” Rose said of James. “He grew up in a neighborhood like that, so it means a lot for a star like that to come out and say something, especially a megastar.

So I’m happy about that.”

Rose also received strong backing from his coach.

“I think it’s a great message,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “It’s about equality and justice for everybody. So I think you guys know the type of person Derrick is.”

All 10 baseball Hall of Fame candidates fall short in vote THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN DIEGO – The doors to baseball’s Hall of Fame remained shut to this year’s Golden Era committee candidates.

Nine players and one executive whose primary contributions were from 1947 to 1972 all failed to receive the 75 percent of the vote needed for election.

“The results today are a reminder that election to the Hall of Fame is incredibly difficult and the highest honor an individual can receive in baseball,” Hall

of Fame chairman Jane Forbes Clark said after the voting was announced Monday at the annual winter meetings.

Dick Allen and Tony Oliva came closest, each receiving 11 of 16 votes, one shy of the 75 percent needed for election. Jim Kaat appeared on 10 ballots, Maury Wills nine and Minnie Minoso eight.

Ken Boyer, Gil Hodges, Billy Pierce and Luis Tiant each received three or fewer votes, as did the late Cincinnati Reds general manager Bob Howsam.

Rose glad ‘I Can’t Breathe’ T-shirt he wore was noticed

SAN DIEGO – As players and teams waited for Jon Lester to make a decision and start defining the pitching market, baseball’s winter meetings opened Monday with action by the Cubs and White Sox. The perennially woeful Cubs got a player back, agreeing to a $20 million, two-year contract with right-hander Jason Hammel – a pitcher Chicago traded to Oakland last summer. That deal was confirmed to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced.

Hammel’s deal reportedly includes a $12 million club option for 2017 with a $2 million buyout. If the option is exercised, the contract would be worth $30 million for three seasons.

The 32-year-old righthander was 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 17 starts for the Cubs before he was traded to Oakland on July 5 with pitcher Jeff Samardzija. He went 2-6 with a 4.26 ERA for the Ath-

letics.

Seeking its first World Series title since 1908, Chicago is trying to end a streak of five losing seasons. Since the end of the season, the Cubs hired Joe Maddon to replace Rick Renteria as manager and have been trying to sign free-agent pitcher Lester.

Hammel rejoins a solid rotation projected to include Jake Arrieta (10-5 with a 2.53 ERA in 25 starts) and Kyle Hendricks (7-2, 2.46 ERA).

The Cubs hope Travis Wood (8-13, 5.03 ERA) regains the form that made him an AllStar in 2013.

Meanwhile, the White Sox said in Chicago they have claimed catcher Rob Brantly off waivers from the Miami Marlins.

Brantly appeared in 98 games with the Marlins during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, batting .235 with four home runs and 26 RBIs. He hit .255 with four homers and 37 RBIs in 101 games last season for Triple-A New Orleans.

The move announced Monday puts the White Sox’s 40-man roster at 40.

Trestman says he is focused on Saints, not outside ‘noise’

By KEVIN FISHBAIN LAKE FOREST – Earlier in the season, the “noise” outside Halas Hall was about the noise inside the Bears’ locker room, with reports of chemistry issues for a struggling team.

Now, the noise is about firings, benchings, house-cleanings and more for a Bears team that was eliminated from playoff contention Sunday.

They had a brief practice Monday inside the Walter Payton Center, and coach Marc Trestman reiterated that the focus is on one thing – next week’s prime-time game against the Saints.

“All of us here, as coaches and players, are really focused on not anything that’s going outside the building – we’re focused on what’s going inside, and that’s to help our football team get better,” he said. “That’s all of us as coaches.”

There was an NFL Network report that defensive

coordinator Mel Tucker will be fired after the season, a story Trestman would not address when asked.

“All we’re trying to do here is to get our football team in a position that we can be better on Monday night,” Trestman said. “The focus inside the building is exactly that and has always been exactly that week to week. That’s all that’s been important to us here.”

The second part of that report Trestman directly refuted, that the Bears considered benching Jay Cutler during the game against the Buccaneers. “ Jay Cutler, as long as he’s been healthy, has been the guy we’ve had in there and wanted to play,” he said.

“There’s been no indifference there whatsoever.”

And that’s where the noise came in.

“There’s a lot of noise out there. We’re aware of that,” Trestman said. “You get away for a few days, you know how much noise is out there because you’re not

working 24/7. But we’re here to do one thing.

“Today, we worked to get better; and when we get back here, we’re going to do everything we can to get ready for New Orleans.”

The Bears will have Tuesday and Wednesday off before a normal three-day practice schedule begins Thursday in preparation for their Monday night game.

Quick hits: Michael Ola and Ryan Groy will compete to start at left guard. A challenging way of life Lockport teen fights complicated heart condition while striving to be Eagle Scout

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent LOCKPORT – Nicholas “Nick” Lindblad,13, of Lockport loves “The Maze Runner” book series, “Minecraft” video games and working his way up the Boy Scout ladder to Eagle Scout status as his father, Dan, and a cousin did.

But for this Kelvin Grove Middle School seventh-grader, life also has been a series of operations and procedures. With the most complicated surgery of his life on the horizon, his family needs help with hefty medical bills.

Nick was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, or HLHS. He was back at the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital again last week, on an IV drip to address complications from the condition.

When Nick was born, his parents didn’t realize he was ill until the pediatrician detected a heart murmur the day their newborn was to be discharged from the hospital.

“The next thing they knew, he was on a helicopter,” said Nick’s stepmother, Cathy Lindblad.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a rare heart birth defect present in only 960 babies born each year in the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov, it results when the left side of a baby’s heart does not fully develop.

The left ventricle is the chamber that pumps oxygenated blood from the heart to all parts of the body. The right side of the heart normally pumps blood only to the nearby lungs for oxygenation.

“It took three surgeries to reroute the blood,” Cathy said, “so the right half of his heart does all the work now that the left half should do.”

Nick was just 8 days old when he had surgery to put the first of three shunts in his heart. The

Six months later, Nick had a tricuspid valve repair. At 4 and 7, the valve was replaced again.

Those surgeries were in addition to several cardiac catheterization lab procedures.

For Nick, who now also has celiac disease – which is not related to the HLHS – frequent hospitalizations are part of his normal routine.

“I have homework, but most of the time I can’t do homework in the hospital,” Nick said. “I watch TV, and I have my own cellphone, and I call my best friend, Michael, and play DS.” As Nick grows, the right side of his heart will be unable to keep up. However, Cathy said the left side of his heart is growing and getting stronger – something she said surprised everyone – and the septum between the ventricles seems to be strong.

This means Nick may be a good candidate for a surgery called biventricular repair, a complex procedure that would undo the previous surgeries and put the left heart in a position to do its job.

According to a report presented at the American Association for Thoracic Surgery this year (at www.aats.org), biventricular repair is “feasible and can be performed with satisfying long-term survival.” There is one caveat.

Nick’s blood has low levels of albumin, a possible sign of a failing liver. Dr. Brojendra Agarwala, a pediatric cardiologist at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital, said HLHS “can affect other parts of the body, including the liver, the kidneys, the whole body.”

Cathy said Nick always has had an enlarged liver, which doctors have monitored. If the liver truly is failing, Nick’s only option would be a heart and liver transplant.

In the meantime, Nick is working on his First Class rank requirements in Lockport’s Boy Scout Troop 50, with approved modifications in requirements since he can’t swim. Nick’s father, Dan Lindblad, said Nick is sweet, innocent, honest and loyal.

“He’s the strongest kid,” Dan said. “Every single day, he wakes up, and it’s just another day for him. He’s a great kid.”

That sums up bidding a bridge hand rather well. It is not just a matter of counting high-card points. If you find a fit with partner, you should also include short-suit points (or, even better in my opinion, apply the Losing Trick Count).

Look at the East hand. South opens one diamond, West makes an aggressive takeout double, and North passes.

What should East do?

Assuming he is unable to bid in no-trump, an unpassed hand usually makes one of these advances: nonjump in a suit, 0-8 points; single jump in a suit, 9-11; cue-bid of opener’s suit, 12-plus.

However, these numbers should include short-suit points when at least an eight-card fit is known.

So, even if East discounts the diamond queen, his hand is worth 13 points: 10 high-card points and three for the singleton diamond. This means that East should cue-bid two diamonds.

South would rebid two hearts, West would double or pass, North would correct back to three diamonds, and now East can jump to four spades.

If South sacrifices in five diamonds, West should double and collect 500.

Four spades makes easily, losing one spade, one heart and one diamond.

At the table, East only jumped to two spades. South rebid three diamonds, East competed with three spades, South – not reading the vibes correctly – went to four diamonds, and, luckily for him, all passed. Down one was a great result.

Dear Doctor K: My teenage daughter recently learned that she has iron deficiency and anemia. Why would her iron be low? What is the treatment?

Dear Reader: Anemia means that the blood does not have enough red blood cells. These cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. There are many kinds of anemia. In the United States, iron-deficiency anemia is the most common; it occurs when the body does not have enough iron to make red blood cells.

What’s the connection between iron and red blood cells? Inside every red blood cell is the protein called hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to every cell in your body. Oxygen is an essential source of energy to every cell.

Iron is a part of hemoglobin. Most of the iron in the body is in the hemoglobin (and a similar protein in muscle called myoglobin).

Iron enters our body in food and leaves the body primarily when we bleed.

Bleeding causes the loss of red blood cells and a lot of iron. That’s why teenage girls are particularly susceptible to iron-deficiency anemia: They have begun to have monthly menstrual bleeding. Each month they lose blood and iron. If your daughter doesn’t eat enough iron-rich foods, she will gradually develop iron deficiency.

Symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia are not usually obvious unless the problem is severe or long-lasting. If that’s the case, symptoms may include pale skin, tiredness, dizziness, lightheadedness, headaches or ringing in the ears. The condition is diagnosed with a blood test.

Iron-deficiency anemia is usually treated with iron supplements, taken by mouth for several months.

The doctor will do follow-up blood tests to make sure the anemia has gone away or at least is improving.

Iron is best absorbed when given between meals.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Encourage your daughter to take her iron supplement mid-morning, between breakfast and lunch, or mid-afternoon, between lunch and dinner.

Vitamin C makes it easier for the body to absorb iron. But calcium makes it harder, so your daughter should not take her supplement with milk. It may work best taken with foods or drinks that are high in vitamin C such as fruits, vegetables and orange juice.

Warn your daughter not to take more than the recommended dose of iron, as higher doses can be dangerous. Some people are vulnerable to developing iron overload.

You should also try to increase the amount of ironrich foods in your daughter’s diet. These include: • lean meats, poultry and fish • iron-fortified cereals, breads and pasta • dried fruits (apricots, raisins, prunes) • leafy green vegetables (spinach, collard greens, kale) • whole grains (brown rice, wheat germ, bran muffins) • beans, peas and nuts • eggs Teenage girls who have begun to have menstrual periods can help prevent iron-deficiency anemia by taking a multivitamin with iron. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for iron is 8 milligrams (mg) per day for females ages 9 to 13 years, and 15 mg a day for females ages 14 to 18 years.

Iron deficiency in teenage girls is common, easily diagnosed and easily treated. Your daughter should be fine.

Dear Abby: What are the signs of prescription drug abuse?

How would you suggest a young person like me (I am 13) confront a close family member about something like this, especially since I’m not sure?

I found an antidepressant prescribed for my mother. As long as I can remember, she has been a happy and upbeat person, and I have no reason to suspect she’s depressed.

I’m worried she may be abusing the medication.

I have never felt comfortable asking questions, so it would not be easy for me to ask her. Please help.
