JOLIET – Local towns and counties will get money the state has been holding onto since July after Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Monday legislation to release $3.1 billion that includes motor fuel taxes and casino taxes.

The Republican governor took action just hours after the Democratic-controlled Senate sent him the legislation on a 53-0 vote. The conservative businessman has steadfastly opposed “piecemeal” spending during the deadlock now in its sixth month but reached a compromise on the matter with Democrats last week.

Rauner had no comment Monday. He acknowledged last week the quick fix adds to the budget deficit but said it will be worth it in the long run when he gets the “structural change” he seeks.

The legislation also pays out lottery winnings that the state has been holding since the budget impasse began and $165 million for home heating-bill

The action should ease some concerns that the state had designs on the local dollars, which also include video gaming taxes and taxes specifically created to fund 911 call centers.

“There was concern that the governor and state Legislature would look at those funds like a hobo looks at pies on a windowsill,” said state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet. “This action takes the pies off the windowsill and puts them on the dinner table where they belong.”

Joliet alone is waiting for $8.3 million, primarily from the local share of a gambling tax on the city’s two casinos.

The tax dollars are designated for local government but passes through the state before arriving to cities, counties and townships. State officials said they could not distribute the money without a budget or specific legislation authorizing the allocation.

Plainfield library board to vote for pre-referendum reconstruction designs

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Public Library District board members were in support Thursday of final pre-referendum designs for reconstruction of the library.

However, village of Plainfield officials have expressed concerns about two aspects of the design.

The board is scheduled to vote next week on putting two referendum questions to fund the $39 million reconstruction on the March 15 election ballot.

Library officials have been pressing for more space for several years.

The 72,000-square-foot building design spans three floors and takes up the northern part of the Illinois Street block, with a parking lot south of the library.

the new library would have a wavy glass facade that “is a good association with the [DuPage River],” said Don McKay, a representative from consultant Nagle Hartray Architecture.

McKay said architects weren’t thinking of the river in the design, but village officials noted the correlation during a recent meeting.

McKay and Library Director Julie Milavec told library board members that village officials commended the general design of the building.

But they noted village officials are concerned with the west facade of the building, and plans to tear down three additional houses along Route 59 to make room for parking.

Village Planner Michael Garrigan said Monday that the Illinois Street west facade of the library building was bland. He also said plans to acquire and tear down three old houses along Route 59 for additional parking could hurt the historic character of the area.

“We have major concerns,” he said. “But we are strongly in support for the library to stay downtown.”

McKay said windows could be added to the west elevation to enliven it. Milavec added that some of the, in total, five homes to be demolished can be picked up and moved to a different location. But the decision to sell ultimately rests with homeowners.

Rezin said the release of the money would keep 911 call centers “fully operational” and was needed “because several of our municipalities don’t have enough money right now to purchase road salt.”

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hanukkah is considered by Jewish people a minor holiday, but its celebration has become a bigger deal over the years, especially because it is close to Christmas.

Children at the Joliet Jewish Congregation celebrated the holiday Sunday with a party. Hanukkah – which began Sunday and ends Dec. 14 – celebrates the Jewish rebellion in 2nd century B.C. against the Greeks.

It is an eight-day festival of lights and each night a candle on the menorah is lit.

Hanukkah has grown in prominence so people don’t forget about it as they get older, he said.

Rubovits said Hanukkah used to be celebrated in the home, but over the decades it has become more public.

Christmas happens about the same time of the year and Hanukkah got dragged along with, which is not a bad thing, he said.

“The public aspect of Hanukkah has risen considerably,” he said.

City Council wants property tax hike out of proposed ’16 budget

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and City Council members told the city manager to bring back a 2016 budget without a property tax increase Monday.

At stake in the budget may be the city’s $600,000 annual contribution to the Rialto Square Theatre, which one council member said should be eliminated.

The council met for the second time to review the proposed budget, which would use up $5.3 million in reserves to cover a deficit.

The council meets again Monday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the budget.

No vote was taken on the proposed 5 percent hike in property taxes, which would raise more than $1.6 million.

But several council members said they would not vote for it, and O’Dekirk told City Manager Jim Hock to come back with a budget that did not include the hike.

The total budget is $289 million. But the tax increase would have supported the general fund, which covers

most city services, and totals $174 million.

Joliet resident John MacQueen said a no-tax increase budget could be done.

“I think you should have some moratoriums here,” MacQueen told the council.

“No new hiring, no new projects, no new nothing until you get this figured out.”

MacQueen noted the budget does not yet take into account potential pay increases.

The city has just begun to negotiate contracts that expire at the end of 2015 with its unions.

The budget also includes a 2 percent increase in a separate property tax for the Joliet Public Library and an increase in the real estate transfer tax, charged when a home is sold, from the level of $3 per $1,000 to $5 per $1,000.

The real estate transfer tax would have to be approved by referendum, which makes it an unreliable revenue source, said Gideon Blustein with the Three Rivers Association of Realtors. He urged the council to drop the proposed hike, which he said amounted to a property tax on people selling their homes.

Councilman Larry Hug wants Hock to ask all department heads to consider 3 percent spending reductions to avoid the spending of $5.3 million in reserve funds to cover an annual deficit.

Hug also said the city should consider cutting its annual $600,000 contribution to the Rialto, which, he said, amounts to 20 percent of the theater’s budget.

“They need to find a way around a 20 percent cut,” Hug said, adding he believed suggestions that such a cut would close the Rialto are overblown.

Hug is the only council member who has publicly said the Rialto should be cut out of the budget. But O’Dekirk at one point during the meeting said, “There will be a day when that money will be cut off.”

Rialto General Manager Randy Green and board Chairman Dan Vera were at the meeting, but did not address the council. Two members of the Rialto volunteer organization spoke and urged the council to continue making the $600,000 contribution.

Plainfield Asian fusion restaurant opening in historic building downtown

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A new Asian fusion restaurant specializing in sushi and eastern-style barbecue will soon open in the oldest government building in Plainfield.

The restaurant, Mora, is expected to open at 24108 W. Lockport St. in early January, according to applicant Jason Morales and restaurant owner Christine Cancel.

Village trustees approved a Class “F” liquor license for the restaurant Monday night.

The building was constructed before 1900, with a major rear addition added in

1920, according to village documents. It was used as a town hall, fire department, police department and jail.

But the building has been in disrepair for years. Morales attempted to revive it with the help of a facade grant for a different upscale restaurant in 2010, but trustees at the time were concerned with specifics in the planned renovations.

This time, the board approved Morales’ plans in July, allowing for a $57,750 facade grant through tax increment financing funds from the downtown historic district.

The grant will help replace the north, west and east ele-

vations with common Chicago brick. New entrance folding doors will be added and 40 cracked bricks will be replaced on the southern elevation of the building, facing Lockport Street.

Morales said the renovations likely will occur in early spring, but plans are to open as the year turns.

Trustees also approved a Class “O” liquor license for Capri Sogno, a downtown Italian restaurant, allowing customers to leave the restaurant with a partially consumed bottle of wine sealed in a transparent, one-time use tamper-proof bag provided by the restaurant.

Downtown inn

Plans to renovate the second floor of another historic structure into a three-unit downtown inn also were approved Monday.

The residential structure known as the Academy building at 15106 S. Fox River St. originally was the second school built in Plainfield.

Owner Jennifer Myers, whose family lives in the home, plans to renovate the second story into a threeroom inn. The family would remain on the first floor, with a separate entrance from the occupants of the inn.

Each room would include a bathroom and serve as a

short-term housing solution with close proximity to the downtown restaurants and other businesses.

Trustees pondered whether the inn was a bed-andbreakfast location or not.

Myers explained that no food would be served, qualifying the service as an inn.

However, under the eyes of state statute, it’s classified as a bed-and-breakfast.

State statute requires bedand-breakfast operations to allow occupancy no longer than 10 days in a 12-month period.

Trustees were satisfied with the maximum 10-day occupancy limit.

Mokena police: Teen stole wallet, claimed to be a cop

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Police say a man stole a Tinley Park man’s wallet at a motel party in Mokena early Sunday, then claimed to be a police officer when the theft was discovered.

According to police reports, the 28-year-old victim was hanging out with several people about 3:30 a.m. in a third-floor room at Super 8, 9485 W. 191st St., when Brian R. a 2 0 - y e a r - o l d Rudnicki Frankfort man invited another acquaintance, Brian R. Rudnicki, 19, to join the group.

The victim told police he hung up his jacket and put his wallet in one of the pockets and noticed Rudnicki was

watching him, according to reports.

“He left the room and returned shortly thereafter to hear the toilet running water. The victim stated he then lifted the toilet tank lid and found his wallet in the water tank, wet, missing $60, his driver’s license and two credit cards,” the report stated.

When the victim asked the group about the theft, Rudnicki allegedly suggested “patting down” everyone in the room and said he “was a Will County Sheriff and a narcotics officer,” who had a gun, handcuffs and a badge in his vehicle, police reports said.

Rudnicki then allegedly got a ride to his own car while the victim called police. After phone conversations with the police and his friend, Rudnicki returned in a white 2007 Chevrolet that was searched by officers, police said. A

marijuana pipe was found on the floorboard and officers noticed the odor of marijuana in the car, according to reports.

Police also reportedly found a case of Coors Light, a bottle of whiskey, a carton of cigarettes, a “police style vest and duty belt with handcuffs,” a black pellet gun that resembles a 9-millimeter handgun and a portable radio that is marked as Union Pacific Railroad property.

Police said the victim’s bank card had just been used to buy the liquor and cigarettes at a Frankfort gas station.

Rudnicki of the 19400 block of Foxford Lane in Mokena was arrested and booked into the Will County Jail on charges of theft, unauthorized use of a credit card, impersonating a police officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She said other holidays that are important for Jewish people to celebrate are Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. Yom Kippur is observed as a day for atonement and repentance, while Rosh Hashanah also is a time for introspection.

Besides lighting the menorah each night, families will celebrate Hanukkah by eating food cooked in oil, such as latkes, or potato pancakes.

Children may receive gifts every night or once every other night.

Children also will play with dreidels.

At Sunday’s Hanukkah party, children excitedly played with dreidels, with some repeatedly saying “Gimel!” as the toy spun. If

the dreidel lands on the gimel symbol, they win everything the players bet on, such as candy or coins.

Some families celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas.

Plainfield resident Judy Link, who is married to a Christian husband, said they celebrate both holidays. When she was growing up, Link said she didn’t do anything Christmas-related because both of her parents were Jewish.

One of the things her daughter will do during the holidays is play with a dreidel under a Christmas tree, she said.

She said Hanukkah is becoming more important to society because it’s around Christmas, but her family does more things during Yom

Kippur and Passover.

Not only does celebrating both holidays bring them closer together as a family, but they are able to learn about two faiths.

“I think that the diversity is good for them because they become more accepting,” Link said.

LOCAL BRIEF Joliet man pleads guilty to auto theft

JOLIET – A Joliet man will serve time in prison boot camp after a store receipt linked him to a stolen pickup truck earlier this year.

Desmond L. Alexander, 22, pleaded guilty Monday before Judge Dave CarlDesmond L. son at the Will Alexander County Courthouse in Joliet to one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle in exchange for a three-year sentence and boot camp recommendation.

On Aug. 27, a 2013 Ford F-150 was stolen from a driveway in the 13300 block of Vicky Street in Plainfield. According to prosecutors, the vehicle had been left unlocked with a spare key inside.

The pickup was found aban-

doned four days later in the 400 block of Prior Street in Joliet, according to court files. Investigators from the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force found a receipt from Target in Shorewood that did not belong to the vehicle owner.

Surveillance video from the store allegedly showed Alexander and Jared A. Williams, 18, arriving in the Ford and returning merchandise, which led to police learning the suspects’ names.

Alexander was taken into custody Nov. 10, and Williams is being sought on an active warrant, according to the Will County sheriff’s police.

According to Will County jail records, Alexander has previously been arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful restraint, domestic battery and traffic violations.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A jury Monday found a former Lincoln-Way bowling coach guilty of having sex with a student five years ago.

Edward R. Cetwinski, 46, of New Lenox was a volunteer coach at Lincoln-Way Central for the 2009-10 school year when he met the then-15-yearold female victim, according to trial testimony.

Cetwinski testified in his own defense Monday and acknowledged he and the girl had sexual conversations via text message.

“I wouldn’t say it was something I should do. ... It’s wrong,” Cetwinski told the jury and Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.

Cetwinski also acknowledged he’d given the girl a ride to a January 2010 tournament when she asked, but denied stopping at the bus barn on the way home. The victim testified last week they spent time making out in the van then moved to the backseat where he performed oral sex on her.

The victim’s parent learned of the incident several months later and contacted Manhattan police, according to reports. On Sept. 14, 2010, Cetwinski was questioned by police for more than two hours before admitting he had sexual contact with the teen. A video recording of Cetwinski’s interview and his signed statement were shown to jurors.

“Can you tell us why you would’ve admitted to something you [now claim] you

didn’t do?” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Byers asked Cetwinski.

“I’d never been in a situation like that before. I was very nervous. I was under the assurance if I told them details about an incident I’d be able to go home that evening, so I told them about [rumors] I’d heard,” the defendant answered.

Jurors didn’t believe Cetwinski’s claim and found him guilty Monday afternoon of criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated criminal sexual assault.

After the verdict, Cetwinski’s bond was revoked and he was booked into the Will County jail. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 25 and faces four to 15 years in prison.

JOLIET – A judge will decide next year if a man judged to be insane when he killed his daughter nearly 20 years ago should move from an asylum to a group home.

Judge Sarah Jones said Monday she will review transcripts from John Blank’s murder trial before deciding on the matter in February.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Walsh argued the group home in Rockford that doctors want to send Blank to is in the middle of a residential neighborhood and does not have enough security.

Walsh said the building currently houses eight men found not guilty by reason of insanity, but only one of them was not for misdemeanors.

“I realize medical testimony [says] he’s a candidate for it,” Walsh acknowledged.

“Does the statute require me to consider the offense or does it even mention it?”

Jones asked.

In July 1996, Blank was

alone with his 3-year-old daughter, Cari, when he cut her throat at their Bolingbrook home. His wife returned to find him covered in blood and pleading for forgiveness. Blank had been prescribed anti-psychotic medication and believed demons were after his daughter and that his house and lawn had been bugged.

Originally found “guilty but mentally ill,” an appellate court later ruled Blank was not guilty by reason of insanity. He was committed to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, but must be released by 2026.

Blank has been a patient at Elgin Mental Health Center since 2000. For the past seven years, he has received passes to leave the grounds for supervised patient outings and in 2011 he was granted passes for unsupervised activities within the facility.

Last month, Blank’s psychiatrist testified he has never violated his pass privileges and has always been compliant with his medication.

OBITUARIES JOSEPH BRAUN BANNON MICHAEL J. BOYLE SR. Born: Sept. 4, 1929 Died: Dec. 6, 2015

Joseph Braun Bannon “Joe” went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, December 6, 2015, at the age of 86.

He led an exemplary Christian life and he was loved dearly by his family and friends. Joe was a devoted member of St. Patrick’s Church his entire life. He was born in Joliet on September 4, 1929, to Robert and Henrietta Bannon.

Joe is survived by his loving wife Joan with whom he shared 63 years of married life. Also survived by his children Jim (Toni) Bannon, Mary Anne Bannon Komar, Joe (Karen) Bannon, Marty (John) Bachtler, Bob (Char) Bannon, Tom (Debbie) Bannon and deceased son, John. Also survived by his sister Mary Alyce Kielp.

Further survived by his grandchildren Jeremy, Jeff, Kristin, Maria, Nikki, Tom, David, Ben, Julie, John, Pat, Matt, Stephanie, Kylie, Rylan, Mike and deceased grandchild Christopher; His great-grandchildren Jakob, Elijah, Finn, Lena, Camden and Liam.

Joe was a graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in Floraculture and worked several years as a buyer for Blockson Chemical Company before purchasing Labo Florist in which he enjoyed brightening lives through flowers for over 35 years. “Joe Labo” was well known for using his flower shop sign for Christian messages.

He also enjoyed Christian ministry in many ways such as the Stateville Prison ministry, Pro-Life activities, Christian Family Movement and the Religious Education program at Patrick’s Church.

Joe inherited a great love for building from his father, which Joe handed down to his children. Together they built their lake house which the family enjoyed for over 40 years.

Funeral Services for Joseph Braun Bannon will be held from the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 9:15 am from the funeral home to St. Patrick’s Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am. Michael J. Boyle Sr., age 49, of New Lenox, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Monday, December 7, 2015, at his home.

He is survived by his mother, Jeanne Boyle (nee Heroux) of Romeoville, his children, Angela (Nate) Rock and Michael J. Preceded in death by his father, William Boyle (2003). Michael was a graduate of Brother Rice, Class of 1984.

He was very active with New Lenox Baseball through the years helping as a coach. Michael was an avid Blackhawks fan and he also enjoyed the Chicago White Sox. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, New Lenox for many years. Michael had a big heart, he loved to help people and had a talent for fixing just about anything.

MATT C. CEPELA Born: Aug. 15, 1991 Died: Dec. 1, 2015

Matt Christopher Cepela, Shorewood, age 24. Matt left this world on December 1, 2015.

He was a political skeptic, tech aficionado, and animal whisperer.

He had alluded death twice before - once when he was five years old and drank a toy chemistry set; and again a few years later when he told the teacher who asked him what he would like to be called -Matt or Mathew- he replied “Leeroy Jenkins”.

Matt was born on August 15, 1991, in Joliet, IL. In his lifetime, he evolved from a Pokémon master to a Halo champion to actually being smarter than the internet. Matt loved debating politics and was encouraging all to vote for Bernie Sanders. His quick wit and pun usage were his trademark. He found joy in listening to music, eating ice cream, swimming, dropping “F” bombs, bonding with any and every dog, and watching the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup. Matt once declared that compound words were like babies - a little bit of mom, a little bit of dad, but totally unique. He was, indeed, totally unique.

Matt leaves behind his parents, John and Diane; his excessively attractive siblings, Jeff, Jill, and Jake; his best friend Lilly; and a Catholic-sized extended family.

His family knows that he is looking down on them, upset that this obituary was not written in binary code.

Heaven has gained a tall drink of water - and one heck of a programmer. Finish the Red Hat, Matt.

He is still with us, his handprint on our hearts.

As he would have preferred, Matt was cremated and private memorial services were held.

$3 million bond for Chicago-area man in Wal-Mart shooting

CHICAGO – Responding to deepening mistrust of one of the nation’s largest police forces, the federal government opened an investigation Monday into the Chicago Police Department, and authorities announced they would not charge an officer in the death of a 25-year-old black man who was shot in the back last year.

The Justice Department investigation was to look into patterns of racial disparity in the use of force. It comes nearly two weeks after the release of a video showing a white Chicago police officer shooting a black teenager 16 times.

Lack of trust between police and their communities, “makes it more difficult to gain help within investigations, to encourage the victims and the witnesses of crime to speak up and to fulfill the most basic responsibilities of

Pedestrian dies after being struck by Metra commuter train

RIVER GROVE – A 55-year-old Chicago man was killed when he was struck by a commuter train west of the city.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as James McHale. Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said the train scheduled to arrive at 6:13 a.m. Monday was stopped shortly before 5 a.m. after the pedestrian was struck near the River Grove Station.

All trains in the area were halted

until shortly before 7 a.m., when authorities opened two tracks.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

79-year-old Plano man dies after armed robbery in Aurora

AURORA – A 79-year-old man died after he was beaten during an armed robbery at a club in the Chicago suburb of Aurora.

Police said three masked men broke into the Latin American Club early Sunday morning and demanded money from two cleaning men. Police said the men attacked the workers and beat them until they were unconscious.

Police said Felipe Garcia of Plano died about 10:30 p.m.

Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. The other victim, a 55-year-old Aurora man, was being treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

Police said at least one of the masked men had a large, machete-style gun. Police said the men fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and liquor.

Bouncer guilty of lesser charge in strip club killing by car

BELLEVILLE – A former East St. Louis strip club bouncer charged with killing a customer with his pickup truck more than six years ago has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge connected to the parking lot dispute that preceded the fatal encounter.

Reginald Allen, 33, of Dupo pleaded guilty Monday to mob action in Anthony Rice’s 2009 death. Allen, who initially was charged with reckless homicide, faces up to six years in prison at a Jan. 15 sentencing hearing.

Authorities said Allen, who is white, taunted Rice, a 23-year-old black man, and his brother with racial comments and threw a brick through their friend’s car window at the now-shuttered City Nights bar. It was that “melee” that “lit a fuse” leading to Rice’s death, assistant St. Clair County prosecutor Steve Sallerson said.

Allen wasn’t charged with a hate crime.

WHEATON – A DuPage County judge has set bond at $3 million for a suburban Chicago man charged in a shooting that wounded one person inside a Wal-Mart store.

DuPage County prosecutors said 19-year-old Bradley Morris of Downers Grove appeared in bond court Monday morning. He will need to provide $300,000, or 10 percent, to be freed on bond in Illinois.

Morris is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He is next due in court Jan. 4.

Trump’s campaign said in a statement such a ban should stand “until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” It said the proposal comes in response to a level of hatred among “large segments of the Muslim population” toward Americans.

“Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that

believe only in jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” Trump said in the statement.

He added on Twitter: “Just put out a very important policy statement on the extraordinary influx of hatred & danger coming into our country. We must be vigilant!”

Since the Paris terrorist attacks, a number of Republican presidential contenders have proposed restrictions on Syrian refugees – with several suggesting preference for Christians seeking asylum – and tighter surveillance in the U.S. But Trump’s proposed ban goes much further than those ideas, and his Republican rivals were quick to reject the latest provocation from a candidate who has delivered no shortage of them.

“Donald Trump is unhinged,” Jeb Bush said via Twitter. “His ‘policy’ proposals are not serious.”

Carly Fiorina said, “Trump’s overreaction is as dangerous as President Obama’s under-reaction.”

John Kasich slammed Trump’s “outrageous divisiveness,” while a more measured Ted Cruz, who has always

been cautious about upsetting Trump’s supporters, said, “Well, that is not my policy.”

Ben Carson said he would not advocate “being selective on one’s religion” but does believe that “everyone visiting our country should register and be monitored during their stay.”

Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said Trump’s proposed ban would apply to “everybody,” including Muslims seeking immigration visas as well as tourists seeking to enter the country.

His campaign did not immediately respond to questions about whether it would also include Muslims who are U.S. citizens and travel outside of the country, including members of the military, or how a determination of someone’s religion might be made by customs and border officials.

There are, for example, more than 5,800 servicemen and women on active U.S. military duty and in the reserves who self-identify as Muslim and could be assigned to serve overseas. Trump said later Monday in an interview on Fox News, “They’ll come home.”

Survivors return to Pearl Harbor 74 years after attack The Associated Press PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii – A few dozen elderly men who survived the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor 74 years ago gathered Monday at the site to remember fellow servicemen who didn’t make it.

The U.S. Navy and National Park Service hosted a ceremony in remembrance of those killed Dec. 7, 1941. About 3,000 people were expected to join the survivors.

Adm. Harry Harris, the top U.S. military commander in the Pacific, said the day “must forever remain burned into the American consciousness.”

“For 74 years, we’ve remembered Pearl Harbor. We’ve remained vigilant. And today’s armed forces are ready to answer the alarm bell,” said Harris, who leads the U.S. Pacific Command.

He said the military also was working to “keep the alarm bell from sounding in the first place” by refocusing its attention on Asia and the Pacific region with the aim of maintaining stability, prosperity and peace.

Robert Irwin, 91, of Cameron Park, California, was in the barracks when the attack be-

gan and saw Japanese planes flying overhead. A fellow sailor saw a Rising Sun insignia on the wings and asked Irwin if he knew what the “red ball” was.

The seaman first class hopped on a truck that took him to the USS Pennsylvania, where he fed ammunition to the deck of the battleship.

“It brings back some lousy memories,” said Irwin, of returning to Pearl Harbor. But he comes to the annual ceremony because the attack was a “big thing in my life.” Irwin served as firefighter in San Francisco after the war and retired as a lieutenant in 1979.

The event is being held on a Navy pier overlooking the USS Arizona Memorial. It straddles the battleship that sank nine minutes after being hit. It remains a gravesite for many of those killed.

The Navy destroyer USS Preble was to sound its whistle to start a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., the minute the attack began 74 years ago. Hawaii Air National Guard F-22s flew overhead to break the moment of silence.

During the attack, roughly 2,400 sailors, Marines and soldiers were killed at Pearl Harbor and other military installations on the island of Oahu.

LE BOURGET, France – The United Nations secretary-general called for a clean energy revolution to avoid a “climate catastrophe” as talks on a global warming pact entered their final week Monday with crunch issues on money and burden-sharing yet to be resolved.

One of them, however, appeared to be untangling as the European Union softened its insistence that countries’ targets to limit carbon pollution need to be legally binding, something U.S. negotiators reject because of opposition in the Republican-controlled Congress.

“We need the United States

on board and we have to find a solution,” EU Climate Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete told reporters on the sidelines of the conference. “We understand the concerns they have because of the political situation they have in the Congress.”

Many Republicans question whether climate change is happening and oppose emissions limits out of concern it would hurt U.S. industry and jobs.

Upon arrival in France, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said even without binding targets, the deal could change the way world business thinks about energy.

“I have absolute confidence in the ability of capital to move where the signal of the marketplace says ‘go’ after Paris,” he said.

OPINION Beware of the political backlash

With growing numbers of black and Latino politicians calling for Cook County State’s Attorney Alvarez to resign, it’s probably time for the county’s Democratic Party leaders to rethink their summertime decision not to endorse anyone in the primary.

The incumbent state’s attorney is facing two Democratic primary challengers, Kim Foxx and Donna More.

Foxx, an African-American woman and former prosecutor, is the former chief of staff to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and is backed by other African-American and liberal leaders, plus some labor unions.

More is white, is a former county prosecutor and has represented casino interests since she left the Illinois Gaming Board decades ago. She also contributed to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign (one of only a handful of contributions she’s ever made). The first-time candidate has demonstrated an ability to raise enough money to compete.

ries is “the more, the merrier.” Multiple candidates can split the “anti” vote against the incumbent, which means Alvarez won’t need to receive 50 percent plus one to win. In other words, she could win.

The Chicago media is currently in an uproar about police-involved shootings, and Alvarez is taking big heat for her cozy ties to the police and for her alleged slow-walking of murder charges against the police officer who shot 17-yearold LaQuan McDonald 16 times last year.

Alvarez has always been very friendly to police interests, once charging a woman with a felony for recording two Chicago police officers as they were trying to convince her to drop sexual harassment charges against another police officer. That’s going above and beyond.

So, when the state’s lone Latino in the U.S. Congress, Luiz Gutierrez, withdrew his Alvarez endorsement and other major Cook County Latino figures called on her to resign, the pressure built to a full-on boil.

VIEWS Rich Miller But as we’ve seen elsewhere, a racial backlash could easily develop in this contest.

Racial politics are a hard fact of life in Cook County (as they are most places), so what follows may seem insensitive, but it’s not meant to be at all.

The hard fact is that suburban Cook County just isn’t as racially diverse or as liberal as Chicago. It was just 24 percent African-American and 25 percent Latino in the last census, compared with 32 percent white in the city. The suburbs have quite a lot of people who fled Chicago or who refuse to live there.

It’s also not a stretch to imagine that the reaction by suburban whites to the “Black Friday” protests on Chicago’s famed Michigan Avenue were probably a bit different than they were on the South and West Sides.

Alvarez has repeatedly and quite angrily insisted that she

won’t let “the politicians” with “political agendas” force her out of office or out of the race.

So, the question has to be asked: What if Alvarez actually wins the nomination as a pro-police, law and order candidate? The uproar from the Democratic base would be deafening, and the consequences in the state’s largest and most important Democratic county might be substantial.

On the other hand, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Chicago Ald. Ed Burke support Alvarez. Those two have a lot of sway in Cook County, so as long as they are with the incumbent, the party likely won’t back anyone else.

Both men represent majority Latino areas. Madigan is himself facing a Latino primary opponent (which is probably no big deal, but Madigan hates taking chances). When asked last week if it was time to reconsider the county party’s nonendorsement, Madigan said he was too busy focusing on the state budget – which is simply not believable if you know the multi-tasking Madigan even a little bit.

And Burke flatly refused to back away from Alvarez last week.

Madigan also has quite a few contested suburban general election House campaigns, so the opinions of those voters have to be factored in as well.

It’s always possible, perhaps even probable, that Alvarez and More will cancel each other out, allowing Foxx to win.

But Chicago Democrats have enough problems these days (impending school strike, huge budget deficits, a murder spike, taxes rising everywhere) without piling an Alvarez primary victory on top of that gigantic mountain.

The Democratic Party showed it could adapt when it stripped Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown of her slating because of a federal investigation and then handed it to one of her opponents.

The same sort of rethinking should be done with the Alvarez contest.

To the Editor: The problem with the proposal for the new Will County Courthouse is not only the projected cost of $150 million before accounting for overruns, ups, extras, snafus, construction problems but in addition, it will only last a few decades because the county is not fully built-out, as there is much farmland.

Lower-cost alternatives need to be explored such as adding an annex, moving the criminal court to the safety of the County Jail, and expanding the satellite court system. The local

city council chambers are only slightly used and would make an excellent venue especially for traffic courts and other minor offences.

Also, before jumping to conclusions on the suspected deficiencies of the current Will County Courthouse, an architect and structural engineer should be retained to evaluate the soundness and suitability of the courthouse for modification and improvement before committing million on a new building.

Lockport off to another good start

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A year ago, Lockport’s wrestling team made history by capturing its first trophy in the sport after finishing fourth in the Class 3A dual meet team finals in Bloomington.

Coach Josh Oster’s Porters graduated several key performers from that squad, but there’s plenty of talent back to help them be ranked fourth in Class 3A in the latest GEI Wrestling Apparel rankings on Illinois

Matmen.

The Porters are off to a 10-2 start after going 7-1 last week, with their lone defeat coming in the championship of Fox’s 16-team Sauer duals in Arnold, Missouri. After winning its first six meets in the event, Lockport lost Saturday’s finals, 38-34, to Holt, which was last season’s Missouri Class 4A runner-up.

“This was a great early season test for our guys, both in terms of competition and being able to go through the grind of that many matches in a short

time,” Oster said. “It also allowed us to see a bunch of different guys in a varsity situation and we’ve had 23 different wrestlers in varsity matches in the first two weeks.”

Lockport has gone 4-1 against Illinois squads, with the defeat coming against Class 2A No. 2 Mount Carmel.

The Porters also claimed a 38-37 win over Joliet West this past week.

Lockport’s lineup still is not complete, because returning placewinner and Fargo national champ Trevell Timmons

won’t be back in the mix for perhaps two more weeks.

While Northwestern recruit Shayne Oster, last year’s 3A 138-pound champion, again leads the way, the Porters are receiving good performances from many competitors.

Like Oster, Abdullah Assaf is ranked second at his weight class (120) and he impressed in the Show Me State by beating two returning Missouri state champs. Newcomer Brandon Ramos, who was at St. Laurence last season, also knocked off a returning Missouri champion.

“We’ve got some technique things to work on but after challenging them in the sense of competing on Thursday (against Joliet West), they really responded well Friday and Saturday, which we will look for them to continue,” Josh Oster said.

One of the most optimistic signs for the Porters is the quick emergence of a talented group of freshmen that already look like it might leave quite a mark on the program.

Brawner-Henley averaged 18.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals to lead No. 7 Lewis to two league road wins. She earned her first weekly honor of the season and fifth of her career.

The senior opened her two-game performance in the team’s 68-55 win Thursday at Saint Joseph’s, scoring 20

points and pulling down 13 rebounds. In a 67-51 victory Saturday at Indianapolis, she netted 17 points while adding 12 more rebounds. The effort was her second double-double of the week to make it six on the season so far.

Additionally against UIndy, the 6-footer drained her 1,500th (1,502) career point and grabbed her 1,000th (1,008) career rebound, which moves her closer to the school rebound record set by Julie Fruendt (1,043) from 1981 to ’85.

Francis middle hitter Alyssa Bridleman has been selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Mideast Region Team.

The 24-year veteran joins an exclusive club of those who not only have

won 500 dual meets, but also done it at the same school.

Healy, who won six straight state championships from 1997 to 2002 and also had three second-place finishers and three thirds between 1993 and 2008 beside leading many individual champions and placewinners, figures to have his best team in several years.

The Celtics, who are 18th in Class 3A, last won 20 duals in 2010 and a regional title in 2009.

Two first families of Joliet area sports will get it on at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team visits Lewis at Neil Carey Arena.

Lewis coach Kristen Gillespie, the late Gordie Gillespie’s granddaughter and Mike Gillespie’s daughter, will match wits with USF’s Samantha Quigley, younger sister of professional sharpshooter Allie Quigley, who stars with the Chicago Sky and overseas.

Both of the Quigley girls were college standouts for DePaul coach Doug Bruno.

Incidentally, Gordon Gillespie Jr., Kristen’s uncle, is one of her assistants.

You don’t often attend a basketball game and watch the chess match that goes on from a coaching perspective, but this one can be an exception.

In the recent past, this matchup raised the question of whether USF, which plays on the NAIA Division II level, would be able to keep the game competitive against the NCAA Division II Flyers. This season, that question might elicit a positive response.

While Lewis (8-1) is ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, St. Francis (9-0) is No. 13 in NAIA Division II. The Flyers are outscoring their opponents on the average, 78.1 to 55.9. USF is outscoring its opponents, 77.9 to 57.8.

The sad aspect from the Lewis perspective is that All-America senior guard Jamie Johnson will be missing.

She suffered a torn ACL in the Flyers’ sixth game, a 71-63 loss at Grand Valley State on Nov. 25, and will be out for the season. All Johnson was doing before the injury was average 22.2 points, 4.0 assists and 3.2 rebounds while shooting .524 from the field and .471 from 3-point range.

Meanwhile, the Flyers have their other All-American, senior forward Mariyah Brawner-Henley, who is averaging 16.1 points and 10.2 rebounds.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Senior linebacker Matt Koran (Joliet West), who served as Harvard’s 142nd captain this season, was a second-team selection on the All-Ivy League

football team.

Koran finished with 32 solo tackles and 28 assists for 60 total. He had 55 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and an interception, helping Harvard to a 9-1 record, including a 38-19 win over Yale in the huge season finale.

• In the Big Ten, Illinois’ Josh Ferguson (JCA) was a third-team all-conference selection by both the coaches and media despite missing a significant amount of time with an injury. Safety Clayton Fejedelem (Lemont) was a second-team pick by the media.

• Northern Iowa is alive and well in the FCS playoffs thanks in no small part to a former Illini, quarterback Aaron Bailey (Bolingbrook).

Bailey had modest passing statistics in last week’s 29-17 victory over Portland State, but he rushed for 200 yards in 22 carries, including 69- and

61-yard touchdown runs.

Up next for Northern Iowa is a meeting with four-time FCS champion North Dakota State in a quarterfinal game Saturday.

• Army (2-9) will be a decided underdog in Saturday’s traditional clash with Navy (9-2). However, if you discount a 44-3 loss to Duke and perhaps the 20-3 loss to Air Force, Army has been in every game, and several were against better-than-average opponents.

The Black Knights, you might recall, are coached by Jeff Monken (Joliet Central), who is in his second season at the helm.

Special teams fail Bears in loss to Niners BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Penning these weekly reviews of the Bears’ game tape, I am constantly reminded of the ultimate sports cliché: “The highs are always too high, and the lows are always too low.”

The Bears did not suddenly go from the NFC’s ultimate playoff contender to the conference’s worst team in 62 minutes, 10 seconds Sunday.

They never were the former, and they are not the latter.

But the tape of the Niners game has a lot more tough moments to watch than flurries of optimism.

It obviously was not quarterback Jay Cutler’s finest moment of the season.

It is unclear to me whether the pick-six he threw was an audible – it looks like it could have been – or just a bad call from offensive coordiantor Adam Gase. Either way, it’s as much coaching error as quarterback’s.

It’s clear on the tape the entire San Francisco defense knew what was coming, not just Jimmie Ward, who scored on the interception.

Cutler still had moments with his feet and a couple of exceptional throws, earning a C+ for the day.

At running back, Matt Forte was excellent, Jeremy Langford would have been, short of one dropped pass, and Ka’Deem Carey was interesting.

I struggle with Carey, who runs hard but is a liability in pass protection and as a receiver and hasn’t contributed on special teams.

Against San Francisco, he played some special teams

and threw the key block to spring Deonte Thompson on his 74-yard kickoff return, but also added a drive-killing holding penalty in pass protection.

The running backs were an A-, but the receivers were a C-.

Alshon Jeffery managed only four catches on 12 targets and had trouble separating from bracket coverage,

and Josh Bellamy’s first start featured one catch on four targets and a holding penalty.

Tight end Martellus Bennett, curiously, was targeted only four times – he caught three for 14 yards, fumbling one that the Bears recovered – and Zach Miller caught the only pass thrown to him.

With Eddie Royal and Kevin White in street clothes, the Bears just aren’t good enough at receiver, and it stresses the entire offense.

The offensive line also was a C-. It averaged 4 yards rushing, and Cutler was only sacked once, but Patrick Omameh had two holding calls and Hroniss Grasu spent as much time in Cutler’s lap as he did pushing upfield, consistently getting overpowered at the point of attack.

The highlight of the tape was the play of defensive lineman Eddie Goldman and linebacker Willie Young.

Goldman broke through Sunday with two sacks while disrupting the middle of the line most of the afternoon.

Not only does Young have 3½ sacks and a pick in the past four games, Joe Staley is a perennial Pro Bowler at left tackle who Young destroyed several times.

Although linebacker Pernell McPhee continues to be MIA – in fairness, we assume the knee is an issue – Young might actually have a future at outside linebacker.

Middle linebacker Shea

McClellin was present but again failed to make a difference, and Christian Jones disappeared.

The front seven was a B-, actually an A for Young and Goldman and a C for everybody else.

It was a decent day in the secondary, a B, but the player who stood out for the wrong reason was Adrian Amos.

Amos has had a great rookie season for a fifthround pick, but mostly because he’s playing. You never notice him on the field as opposed to showing up and making plays.

Against the 49ers, he flat out missed quarterback Blaine Gabbert, assuming he was going to slide, and turned a 15-yard gain into a 44-yard touchdown scramble that sent the game to overtime.

Special teams were a roller-coaster ride with an early Marc Mariani punt return for a touchdown called back on a holding penalty and the 74-yard Thompson return sandwiched between the two missed field goals.

Unfortunately, when Robbie Gould misses a 36-yard field goal to win the game with the clock expiring, there is only one grade we can give the special teams.

Bears’ struggles at Soldier Field continue after latest home defeat

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears returned home Sunday with more attention and positive vibes than they’d had all season, only to lose for the fifth time at Soldier Field in an overtime loss to the 49ers.

“My experience has been it’s not so much where you play, it’s who you play is typically how I look at that,” coach John Fox said Monday at Halas Hall about the home struggles.

“Obviously, you’ve got home

fans – that stadium was electric yesterday – and you get disappointed for the whole city as well. But it’s more about who you’re playing and how you play – not where.”

Jarvis Jenkins pointed out that “big plays” were the main reason for another frustrating loss in front of the home fans.

Blaine Gabbert’s 44-yard run to tie the score and 71-yard throw to win the game were reminders of the two big plays the Vikings had late in their comeback win at Soldier Field last month.

Only the Browns, Titans and Cowboys have one win at home, too, this season. The Bears are 4-2 on the road, and Kyle Long said he’s been trying to rack his brain on how to bring some of the success away from Chicago to the lakefront.

“I was thinking about this long and hard last night and we put a big emphasis on being road warriors,” he said.

“You know it’s so hard to go on the road and win in the NFL. I guess we might find that extra something when you go on

the road. You know, when you know that it’s us against the entire stadium, that kind of gives you that extra juice.

“We have to be able to find that at home. We have to find whatever it is to be able to give these people something to cheer about because it hasn’t happened. It’s been lackluster on our end. And we understand that. We take full responsibility for that.

And I know that they’re sick and tired of hearing that. And I’m sick and tired of saying it. We’ve got to figure some-

thing out. We need to find that extra juice that we have when we’re on the road.”

Top pick ‘healed’: Kevin White ran routes and caught passes before Sunday’s game, his first pre-game workout as a Bear. Fox said Monday he thinks White’s leg is healed and the next step is getting White into football shape.

The Bears have until Dec. 15 to decide whether White will be on the 53-man roster.

“If he’s cleared to play football, he’ll be out there,” Fox said. “If not, he won’t.”

While Henry is the prototypical power runner, McCaffrey is all about elusiveness and versatility. The 200-pound sophomore broke Barry Sanders’ NCAA record for all-pur-

pose yards in a season with 3,496. He has scored 13 touchdowns and thrown two TD passes.

He would be Stanford’s second Heisman winner, joining Jim Plunkett in 1970. The Cardinal did have a recent run of three straight seasons with the runner-up. Gerhart finished second behind Ingram in ’09 and Andrew Luck came in second to Cam Newton (2010) and Robert Griffin III (2011).

WATSON

The sophomore has Clemson in the playoff, trying for its first national championship since 1981. Watson fits the mold of recent Heisman winners Cam Newton, RGIII, Manziel and Mariota as a dual-threat quarterback, capable of dominating as a runner or passer.

Watson is the only player in the country who has surpassed 800 yards rushing (887) and 3,500 yards passing (3,512), and has accounted for 41 touchdowns. He would be Clemson’s first Heisman winner.

Reds agree to send Chapman to Dodgers; Mariners get Miley

By RONALD BLUM The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Known for closing games with the fastest pitches in the major leagues, Aroldis Chapman was poised for a quick move at baseball’s winter meetings.

The Cincinnati Reds agreed to trade the All-Star closer to the Los Angeles Dodgers, pending approval of medical records, according to a person familiar with the deal. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Monday because the agreement had not been announced.

A 27-year-old left-hander, Chapman is eligible for free agency after next year’s World Series. He threw the 62 fastest pitches in the big leagues this year, ranging from 103.92 mph to 102.36 mph, according to Major League Baseball’s Statcast computer system. Chapman

joins a bullpen that already has closer Kenley Jansen.

“Kansas City has shown that a really lights-out, super bullpen is a way of winning championships,” Washington general manager Mike Rizzo said. “You’re seeing more and more resources being put into bullpen pieces.”

In the first completed trade of the annual swap session, Boston bolstered a suddenly imposing bullpen, acquiring right-hander Carson Smith and lefty Roenis Elias from Seattle for left-hander Wade Miley and reliever Jonathan Aro. The 26-year-old Smith, who was 2-5 with 13 saves and a 2.31 ERA in 70 appearances for Seattle, joins the back end of a bullpen anchored by new closer Craig Kimbrel.

“I think it really gives us another power arm,” Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said.

“It gives us a little more depth out there.”

World Series champion Kansas City made a pair of pitching moves, announcing an $11.5 million, two-year contract with right-hander Chris Young, who won the Series opener, and agreeing to a $25 million, three-year deal with reliever Joakim Soria that still needed to be finalized.

“Him and Chris Young are very similar people,” general manager Dayton Moore said.

After defecting from Cuba in 2009, Chapman spent the past six seasons with the Reds and saved 146 games in 164 chances. He had a 1.63 ERA this year, when he struck out 116 in 66⅓ innings. The trade agreement was first reported by Fox. “We go through this at the trade deadline at the end of July and now we have a bunch of players with names out there.

So it’s uncomfortable enough,”

Reds manager Bryan Price said. “So if anything happens with any of our guys, it would be nice if it happened sooner rather than later, but that’s just the nature of the beast.”

Los Angeles also was closing in on deals to add free-agent pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma and to re-sign second baseman Chase Utley.

“You look at Chase Utley, the intangibles, I think he’s a special player and can make our team better,” new Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Iwakuma, haven’t seen a whole lot, but when he’s healthy, he’s as good as anything. Top-of-the-rotation guy.

From what I hear, he’s healthy.

We’ll see what happens.”

Zack Greinke, who agreed Friday to a $206.5 million, sixyear contract with Arizona, took the physical Monday that is needed before that deal can be finalized. He has gone 51-15

with a 2.30 ERA in three seasons with the Dodgers.

“It’s definitely a void,” Roberts said. “I was looking forward to being on the same club, but that’s the nature of this game.”

In another staple of the first day at the meetings, the Hall of Fame’s veterans committee announced its election results, and for the second straight year no candidates were chosen. The Pre-Integration Era Committee weighed the merits of six players, three executives and one of the game’s pioneers, all of whom made their mark before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. None of the 10 received the 12 of 16 votes necessary for induction.

A Hall of Famer did make news, however. Commissioner Rob Manfred said Cal Ripken Jr. has become his special adviser on youth programs and outreach.

NEW YORK – Alabama running back Derrick Henry, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey are the finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

The announcement came Monday night.

Henry and McCaffrey will be trying to break a streak of five straight quarterbacks winning college football’s top honor when the trophy is presented Saturday night in New York.

Mark Ingram of Alabama in 2009 was the last running back – and only Crimson Tide player – to win the Heisman. Since 2000, 13 of the 15 Heisman winners have been quarterbacks.

Among those missing out on a trip to New York City was Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, LSU running back Leonard Fournette, who was the early season favorite, and Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds.

Teletovic, Knight rally Suns past Bulls

By JOHN JACKSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Mirza Teletovic scored 21 points, including a follow basket with 0.3 seconds left, to cap the Phoenix Suns’ furious fourth-quarter rally in a 103-101 victory over the Bulls on Monday night.

Brandon Knight had 17 of

his 21 points in the fourth as the Suns came back from 16 down after three quarters to snap a four-game skid. Phoenix outscored the Bulls, 42-24, in the final period.

Pau Gasol scored 22 points to lead the Bulls, Jimmy Butler added 19 and Derrick Rose 14.

The Bulls led most of the way and their advantage grew

to 77-61 entering the fourth quarter as Phoenix was held to 10 points on 4-of-20 shooting in the third.

The Suns’ offense, however, came to life at the start of the final quarter.

Trailing 86-75 with just less than eight minutes to go, Phoenix went on an 11-2 run to pull within 88-86 with just less than five minutes remaining.

Retired from her job as a food service supervisor in a Glenwood school, a typical day meant getting up early to walk her Labrador retriever Taz a couple of miles around the neighborhood, then doing some yard work or gardening.

One day, that life instantly changed.

“I was on the phone talking, then I hung up, and I couldn’t move,” Ewers said. “I didn’t know what was happening.”

Ewers had atrial fibrillation – or AFib – a condition where rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the heart’s two atrial chambers to fibrillate, or to contract very fast and irregularly. Blood pooling in a pocket off one of those chambers, called the left atrial appendage, can cause blood to form clots that can travel to the brain and cause a stroke.

Eventually Ewers’ cardiologist, Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s medical director of cardiac electrophysiology Dr. Ahmad Abdul Karim, decided Ewers was a prime candidate for a new procedure offered at the hospital – the Watchman device procedure.

“I think it’s very exciting,” Karim said of the Watchman procedure. “It provides significant protection from stroke in these patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation as an alternative to anticoagulants.”

Fortunately, one of Ewers’ sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Donna, were there with Ewers when she had the stroke, which was diagnosed in the emergency room. Jim caught her as she was falling and sat her in a chair. She was talking, but her words were slurred.

After her stroke, her doctors put her on anti coagulant medications to keep more clots from forming while they worked to control her atrial fibrillation with such measures as medication and cardiac ablation.

But the anticoagulants caused internal bleeding.

“She was severely anemic from bleeding and had needed several transfusions,” Karim said.

Karim said the new Watchman procedure is designed for patients who are able to take anti coagulants, but have reasons to pursue other options, such as those who have bleeding, anemia, strokes or have active jobs that may cause injury.

The Watchman device, Karim explained, is inserted

into the femoral vein in the groin area by a catheter, much like a stent placement. Using fluoroscopy and echocardiography, Karim guides the catheter up to the right atrium of the heart, through the septum between the right and left atria, into the left atrium, then into the small left atrial appendage.

Karim then opens the device to about the size of a quarter, and it blocks the LAA closed, so no more blood clots can leave the LAA and get loose into the general circulation. After a few weeks, cardiac endothelial cells actually grow over the device and cover it, sealing the opening to the LAA completely.

Another echocardiogram is performed about 45 days after the procedure to make sure all is good.

Karim said the Joliet hospital began performing the pro-

cedure in August and has since done five, including Ewers’.

His patients have done quite well, he said, and only one had additional surgery.

About two years ago the hospital, also under the guidance of Karim, introduced another procedure to treat clotting problems caused by AFib – the lariat procedure.

That surgery still is being used on a select group of patients, Karim said, with good results, but even more patients will benefit from the Watchman. With the lariat, Karim surgically goes in through the chest wall, then inside the heart to close off the LAA. It’s a long procedure, he said, and more risky than the Watchman.

“The Watchman device procedure is more straightforward,” Karim said, “and it has a lower risk of complications.”

Ewers said she did well

with the Watchman procedure.

She now lives with another son and daughter-in-law, John and Cindy, and Cindy said her mother-in-law is much improved lately.

“She’s just so much better since she’s had this done,” Cindy said. “It’s been a big change.

We’ve been able to cut back on so much medication.”

A chronic and painful swelling in one of Ewers’ feet suddenly went away after the procedure, as well, Cindy said. Today, Cindy takes her mother-in-law out for trips, shopping and dining and for her monthly “Caucus” with her Glenwood friends.

Another area hospital also offers the Watchman implant – Edward Hospital in Naperville.

It was the first community hospital in Illinois to offer it to certain atrial fibrillation patients, according to a hospital news release.

It is aimed at serious tournament players, with in-depth articles about major events, a monthly bidding contest that readers may enter, hands to bid with your partner, book and software reviews, and instructive quizzes.

There are two levels of quiz, for good players and for those aspiring to that level. This deal is easier on paper. South is in five spades. West leads the diamond two. South takes the trick in the dummy, plays a club to his king, leads a second club to the jack and ace, then continues with the club 10. What should East discard?

Note that six hearts doubled would cost only 300, cheap if five spades is making, but not good if it can be defeated.

East should realize not only that his partner has led a singleton, but that South knows it, too. So, with a solid suit in the dummy, why isn’t declarer drawing trumps?

West must have the spade ace, and South anticipates: spade to the ace, heart to a high honor, diamond ruff. He is hoping to cut the communication between the defenders by discarding his heart on the club 10.

And that will work if East carelessly signals with his heart queen at trick four.

Instead, East must “discard” his trump. Then declarer has no reply.

Finally, note that East should play his diamond 10 at trick one as a suit-preference signal to confirm that he has the heart ace. Attitude and count are clearly irrelevant.

replied, “I don’t have any kind of depression. I’m just grumpy.” His wife added, “His mother says he was born grumpy.”

Cognitive behavioral therapy examines and helps correct self-critical thought patterns that contribute to the “grumpiness.” Psychotherapy can help sort out conflicts in important relationships that also might be involved.

An antidepressant medication can be very helpful. The most commonly prescribed are the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (such as fluoxetine); serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (such as venlafaxine), mirtazapine and bupropion.

Your doctor may add a different type of drug to your treatment – for example, a mood stabilizer or anti-anxiety medication.

With treatment, symptoms often go away completely. However, continued treatment usually is necessary to prevent symptoms from returning.

My patient who insisted he was just “a grumpy person” agreed to try an antidepressant. Two months later, he and his wife came to my office.

The patient told me he wasn’t sure if the medicine was helping. He said he’d stay on it if I thought he should. Before I could answer, his wife said, “You really should. You’re not grumpy anymore.” He shrugged, looked at me and said: “She probably knows me better than I know me.”

Clearly, the two of them had a strong relationship.

It grew stronger when he continued with the treatment.

says I suffer from “dysthymia.” A friend says this is just a nice word for depression. What is dysthymia?

Dear Reader: Dysthymia is a type of depression.

Periods of dysthymia tend to last longer than periods of depression. In fact, many people with dysthymia describe having been depressed as long as they can remember. Dysthymia typically is less severe than major depression; however, people with dysthymia are more likely to develop major depression in the future.

Dysthymia is not quite as common as full-blown depression. During the course of a year, about two people out of every 100 will suffer from dysthymia. It is about twice as common in women as in men.

The symptoms of dysthymia are like those of major depression. In both conditions, a person can: • Have a low or irritable mood (grouchy).

• Feel relatively unmotivated or apathetic.

• Feel disengaged from the world.

• Feel pleasure less often, from anything that normally gives pleasure, from eating to sex.

• Have little energy.

• Experience an increase or decrease in appetite and weight.

• Sleep too much or have trouble sleeping.

• Have difficulty concentrating.

• Feel indecisive.

• Feel pessimistic.

• Have a poor self-image.

Dysthymia lasts for long periods, sometimes starting in childhood. As a result, people with dysthymia tend to believe their symptoms are just a natural part of their personality. They might not even think to talk about it with doctors, family or friends.

NOTICE OF BID PREQUALIFICATION The City of Calumet City is seeking qualified bidders for renovation construction of the Fire Department Station No. 1 located at 684 Wentworth Avenue. Contractor/Supplier qualification forms may be obtained from the Fire Chief's Office at 204 Pulaski Road (2nd Floor) between the hours of 9:00am-ct and 5:00pm-ct or may be received electronically by contacting Professional Building Services at (708) 672-4010 beginning December 7, 2015.

Completed qualification forms shall be sealed in an envelope with Company Name and specific job reference written on the envelope.

Completed forms will be received on or before December 21, 2015 at 2:00pm-ct at the Fire Chief's Office at 204 Pulaski Road (2nd Floor). Upon review of the qualification forms, each qualified bidder will be notified when the Plans and Specifications will be available for pick up as well as Pre-Bid Meeting and Bid Due dates.

Project Information: The project consists of the renovation construction of approximately 4,000 square foot of existing space located on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Fire Station. Major construction will include, but not be limited to: testing services, remediation, concrete cutting & leveling, masonry tuckpointing, masonry sealing, rough & finish carpentry, millwork, casework, wood stairs & railings, thermal insulation, fire-stopping, joint

sealants, window repair/replacement, door leafs (wood and hollow metal), door frames (hollow metal), door hardware, storefront entrance repair or replacement, mirrors, gypsum board (including finishing), floor covering (i.e. tile, carpet), acoustical ceilings, painting, toilet accessories, plumbing, mechanical (HVAC), electric, fire alarm, communications.

Qualified contractors will be required to comply with all laws, including local city ordinances, including those relating to the employment of labor and the payment of the general prevailing rate of hourly wages in the locality in which the work is to be performed for each craft or type of worker or mechanic needed to execute the contract or perform such work, also the general prevailing rate for legal holiday and overtime work, as ascertained by the city of Calumet City or by the Illinois Department of Labor for Cook County, Illinois, shall be paid for each craft or type of worker needed to execute the contract or to perform such work.

Qualified bidders may be required to provide a 10% bid bond, and performance/payment bonds as specified in the plans.

The City of Calumet City reserves the right to omit any or all contractors from the final approved bidders list.
