Manhattan Depot American railroad stations use to be an all-too common site in our country, as almost every town, large and small, could claim one, which was due largely to the fact that railroads once went almost everywhere, reaching almost any and every town.

In the beginning, the promise of a rail line passing through town often meant boom or bust for any settlement. Railroad station buildings, or depots, often were the center of activity and communications for small towns in America. In the years before the automobile, the railroad depot was the only means to the outside world for most people.

Not only could you use the building to board your train to far away places, but it also was where the goods you purchased were delivered. In some remote towns, the station agent lived in the depot. In fact, in a small town like Manhattan, the station agent handled all the duties required of the railroads.

They were ticket agent, baggage handler, mail sorter and more. But their most important duty was receiving telegraphic orders for trains and passing them on to train crews.

The typical small town depot was rectangular in shape and paralleled the railroad tracks. At one end was the freight room, which had a pair of scales for weighing items that needed to be shipped. At the other end of the building was a waiting room with benches for passengers, and usually equipped with a pot-bellied or coal-burning stove for heat.

ing of the Wabash Railroad in 1880 led to the establishment of the village. When the railroad began service in 1880, the first depot was located near the intersection of the two primary roads in the township, the Joliet Road (U.S. Route 52) and the Manhattan-Monee Road. In 1881, John Whitson and the Trask family subdivided some of their property around the depot, which soon became the core of the Manhattan

Business development occurred rapidly around the new depot, including a boarding house and a blacksmith shop. With growth, Manhattan was organized into a village in 1886. By 1905, an additional railway line was added when the Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota Railway (later to be known as the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad) was built through the town to connect the towns

of Joliet and Kankakee.

When these tracks were laid, a small wooden depot was constructed near the Central Park pond on the west side of the tracks.

In 1907, a fire destroyed the first Wabash depot, and a second Wabash depot, shown in the then photograph, was built later that year in the same location. The now image shows a similar view of the old Wabash depot location today.

38th annual ‘Festival of the Gnomes’ draws new, repeat visitors

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Alice Zolp, 86, left Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park on Saturday understanding firsthand why families return each year to watch the quirky holiday production “Festival of the Gnomes” come to life on stage.

“It’s so charming,” first-timer Zolp of Joliet said of the longstanding show in its 38th year. “I can see why people come back.”

Her granddaughter had a part in the show this year.

The 80-minute live production opened Saturday afternoon with its 50-member all-ages cast introducing the audience to the legends and lore of gnomes – which are “not to be confused with dwarves or elves.”

Largely inspired by “The Gnome Book” by Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet, the show takes area families through familiar stories of long-cherished characters, including the Poor Woodsman along with Snotgurgle and her evil trolls.

Through the show, families learn how to escape the clutches of hungry trolls and how to “get warm from the inside and out” from Gnome from Nome and a friendly sea otter from the North Pole.

The show for years has been a mainstay holiday tradition for people in the area, including Sharon Fischer of Plainfield.

Saturday marked the 69-year-old’s 17th show. She has attended most with her daughter and grandchildren, but this year was her

“It’s a holiday tradition,” Fischer, 69, of Plainfield said, holding her long-cherished green gnome hat in her hand, decorated with tassels – each representing a visit to the event.

First-timers can purchase a gnome hat and bring it back each year they attend.

For each subsequent year, one of the grandma gnomes will sew a tassel on the cap.

One person unfortunately missing from this year’s show was Billie Limacher – known to many as Grand-

ma Gnome. Now in her 90s, Limacher, president of the

Her granddaughter, Catherine Limacher, 39, still attended. She and her son, Henry, had one of the grandma gnomes outside the theater sew tassel number seven onto his hat.

“I don’t think we’ve really ever missed a show,” Catherine Limacher said, adding she started out as a cast member when she was just 9 years old.

She said her grandmother loves being Grandma Gnome every year and was sorry she had to miss out this weekend.

While the show’s plot is similar each year, a new scene tells the story of Tinker Gnome, said Deanna Opsahl, office assistant. It’s about a crafty gnome who likes to tinker with his own inventions and contraptions, but often gets frustrated when they don’t work out perfectly.

Last year, both Saturday shows sold out, so park officials added a third show Sunday to accommodate everyone, said Opsahl.

Guardian Angel saves thousands from abuse

Local agency reaches out during darkest times

By HANNAH KOHUT hkohut@shawmedia.com Guardian Angel Community Services has offered emergency and educational care and assistance to Will County residents since 1897.

Among the dozens of services it provides, Guardian Angel helps women and children escape domestic and sexual abuse, provides educational programs to children and adults and offers family and individual counseling.

As a partner agency of the United Way of Will County, Guardian Angel depends on donations to keep these often life-saving programs running. Donations through the 2014 Herald Angels giving campaign will help Guardian Angels reach out to more residents.

“In the last six years, our [emergency] hotline calls have increased 210 percent,” said Ines Kutlesa, CEO of Guardian Angel Community Services. “The demand for services continues to increase. We are always looking for more resources.”

Program manager Amirrah Abou-Youssef said Groundwork has helped more than 2,000 people this year in Will and Grundy counties.

Groundwork also helps victims seek orders of protection from abusers and works closely with the Will and Grundy county courthouses, along with local hospitals, to provide as many options as possible to the victim.

“If a rape victim shows up at a hospital, the hospital staff will call us and we’ll talk to the victim about their options,” Youssef said. “We also have call-backs, where we follow up with the victim.”

For domestic violence

victims, there also is Suzy’s Caring Place, which gives victims a home for up to two years while they rebuild their lives. There, they recover their dignity, learn how to exercise their legal rights and develop renewed ways of living. Otherwise, Kutlesa said, they could end up homeless or back with their abuser.

“They can address economic and emotional consequences from their situation and are given choices of places to go once they leave,” Kutlesa said.

Guardian Angel also serves abusers through its Prevention Program in hopes of reaching the abuser by identifying triggers of aggression and address ingrained behaviors.

In the past year, Kutlesa said Guardian Angel has served more than 50,000 people. Donations are greatly appreciated, Kutlesa said, and no gift to the United Way is too small.

“Joliet is a strong and generous community that is thankful for the services we provide here,” Kutlesa said.

“Any time we have an opportunity to share how important the United Way is to our agency, it’s a pleasure.”

Army specialist gets hometown welcome

By JEAN TYRELL Shaw Media correspondent Surrounded by friends and well-wishers and people he didn’t even know, Army Spc. Patrick Adams couldn’t contain his happiness. He hugged and shook hands at a parking lot next to the Braidwood Police Department on Sunday afternoon.

He and two visiting fellow soldiers, Pfc. William Engelking of California and Spc. Justin Tillema of Idaho, were the recipients of a homestyle welcome that included a parade, flags along Braidwood’s Main Street and an escort by a patriotic motorcycle group and emergency vehicles. The soldiers are members of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and have been serving combat duty in Afghanistan.

Adams thanked the gathered crowd and accepted commendations from the Soldiers Guardian Angels and the Wilmington Sons of the American Legion/ Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The hardest part for those in the crowed seemed to be keeping the surprise welcome a secret from Adams and his

buddies.

Friend Trevor Bieda said Adams was told by Adams’ family not to come home Friday, although he was en route.

Adams, Bieda said, stayed out of town in order to not arrive before the planned welcome.

The welcome was planned by Patrick’s mom, Melanie, and

by Braidwood police officer Doug Savarino, who in turn, contacted the local group Project Patriotism.

Project Patriotism’s Al Zuccarella, a Coal City firefighter organized his cadre of veterans groups and residents. Zuccarella said the goal is to make sure that military personnel and their families know that their efforts are appreciated. The escort included local fire and police departments as well as motorcyclists from the Wilmington VFW, the Red Knights, and the Leathernecks and the Patriot Guard riders.

He marched in Civil Rights movements, worked an active jail and prison ministry, rode with the Christian Motorcyclists Association, served as treasurer and president of the New Lenox Maplewood Cemetery Board, was pastor of multi-ethnic congregations, taught the membership class at United Methodist Church in New Lenox and built cradles for the babies of new parents.

For his funeral, said Mike Weirman, music director at United Methodist Church, Johnson requested the church’s trumpet section take him to the cemetery near the church while playing “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Johnson was 84 when he died Aug. 4, 2013.

“He wanted it to be a celebration because he was so lively,” Weirman said.

When the church decided to honor Johnson’s memory with a cantata on Dec. 14, Weirman searched for – and found – an unusual cantata, “A World of Christmas.”

“It will be very upbeat,” Weirman said, “but because of who he was, we thought he would love it.”

Johnson’s wife Ruth, formerly of New Lenox and now of Homer Glen, said she never questioned her husband’s ideals, but learned to simply “hold onto his coattails and support him.” He often provided rides to alcoholics and invited ex-convicts to live with him, she added.

One time, the men had so much fun, they stayed until late in the evening.

“So I heated up the leftovers and we all had a second meal together,” Ruth said.

Health concerns caused Johnson to step down from pastoral ministry, so he formed the Ministry of Criminal Justice agency – with locations throughout Illinois – until ill health again intervened. His last pastoral assignment was at Ravenswood Fellowship UNC of Chicago, where Sunday worship was conducted in English, Indian and Japanese, Ruth said.

After Johnson retired in 1992, the Johnsons moved to New Lenox and Bill served as a volunteer associate pastor at the New Lenox Methodist Church. Ruth sang in the choir; Bill sang with the church’s Broadway Barbershop Quartet and greeted everyone entering the church for services at the door.

Ruth said Bill executed even those roles with zest and enthusiasm.

of dried fruit instead of candied). Mom used to bake her own potica, gingerbread men and Russian tea cakes every year. Some things she’s given up but she still loves to make her mini-fruitcakes to give out to loyal followers.

The past couple years we’ve been doing it together.

If her hands get tired of mixing, I can step in. If the bowl gets to heavy, I can scoop the dough into the pans.

While we were baking one night last week, she commented how much fun it is to be baking with her daughter, even if she needs help. I was so touched.

I reminded her of the many things we did together when I was young and she helped me.

These are the moments of joy I want to fill up my tank with. The stocking I opened on St. Nicholas morning, filled with things she picked out just for me.

And of course there are more of those to come over the next few weeks with my husband and sons.

So I challenge our readers to pay attention to all the joys – little and big – during the holiday season. What can you be grateful for? What special joy has touched your life or the life of someone you know?

Use them to fill up your joy tank so when January comes (was it not here already?) you’ll have a reserve to pull from.

And share some of those joys with me; if I can make a column of them, I will share them with others. That way we can all garner a little more joy.

My yoga instructor, Jeff Manning from Aurora Yoga Center, talked last week about saving up joy. The idea is to savor some of the joy we get during the holidays and fill up our tanks – like filling up your gas tank before heading out to a long, desolate stretch of highway.

Once the chaos of the holidays is over we have a long stretch of gray days ahead, which can make us feel tired, blah and even depressed.

So why not savor those moments we have now, get in as many as we can, so we have something in our tanks during the dead of winter.

My mom, who is 84, stayed with me for almost three weeks. I just drove her back to my sister in Michigan this past weekend.

Sure, she’s slower than she used to be and her hands aren’t as nimble, but we packed in a lot of holiday activities while she was here. Although it takes more patience than I’m used to since my kids are grown, I miss her deeply when she’s not with me.

We did some holiday shopping – she loves finding trinkets and special candies for everyone’s St. Nicholas stocking, which were filled Dec. 6. We all still get one – from adults down to great-grandchildren.

She uses small paper bags instead of stockings and decorates each one with stickers and the recipient’s name. I saw her in the bedroom many times, bags spread out on the bed and the fillings sitting on top as she thoughtfully pondered who got what.

Over the years mom has included friends of our kids if they were around, and while they might get yet another Chapstick or fancy marker, they always love being remembered and getting “a little something, something,” from Grandma Johnson.

Lemont police charge man with Bicyclist struck, killed in Wilmington Township child pornography possession The HERALD–NEWS LEMONT – Police in Lemont say they have charged a 38-year-old man with aggravated possession of child pornography.

Police said John E. Praninskas, 38, of the 400 block of Keepataw Drive, was arrested Friday after a five-month investigation, according to a department release.

Lemont detectives were assisted by the Will County Sheriff’s High Tech Crimes

Unit. Members of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also assisted, police said.

Lemont police said Praninskas was initially charged with possession of a controlled substance in July 2014.

“During the course of that investigation, detectives were called in, resulting in the discovery of pornographic images of children,” police said in the release.

With help from the county and the National Center for

Missing and Exploited Children, Praninskas was found in possession of hundreds of images determined to be child pornography, police said.

Aggravated child pornography is a class X felony punishable by not less than six and no more than 30 years in prison, and a maximum fine of $100,000, police said.

Praninskas was transported to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office to await a bond hearing, police said.

The HERALD–NEWS WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP – A man was pronounced dead early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at 3:08 a.m.

Sunday at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The man was riding a bicycle on West Frontage Road just south of Lorenzo Road in Wilmington Township when he was struck by a vehicle, the coroner’s office said Sunday.

The Illinois State Police are investigating.

As of Sunday afternoon, Illinois State Police said the crash remained under investigation and that they were still working to identify the man.

He was a graduate of Joliet Township High School in 1942.

Pete was a proud Navy veteran of

WW II. He served on the Destroyer Escorts, the USS Elden and the USS Chestatee as an Electricians Mate 1st Class. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. He enjoyed traveling to his Navy reunions.

He retired from Caterpillar with 31 years of dedicated service. Pete was a life-member of Stone City Post VFW # 2199, American-Italian Cultural Society, Caterpillar Retirees Club and the Church of St. Anthony.

Preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie (nee Sestak) Militello (2001); his parents, Carl and Josephine Militello; and a sister, Rose (late, Edward) Lesh.

Survived by his loving daughters, Judy (Hugh) Zimmerman, Sandy (Frank) Zamber and Joan (David) Wrath; he was proud papa to his loving granddaughter, Leah Wrath.

have removed more than 50 cats and kittens from a home in Loves Park.

The Rockford Register Star reported that Loves Park police officers discovered the cats in squalid conditions Friday evening after being dispatched to the house for a welfare check.

Police called the fire department for help because of strong ammonia and urine odors, and crews wore masks and oxygen tanks to search for people. The resident was not home, but issued a notice to appear in court next month.

Fire officials condemned the house.

Chlorine gas sickens 19 at furries convention

ROSEMONT – Chlorine gas sickened several people and forced the evacuation of thousands of guests from a suburban Chicago hotel Sunday, including many dressed in cartoonish animal costumes for an annual furries convention who were ushered across the street to a convention center hosting a dog show.

Nineteen people who became nauseous or dizzy were treated at local hospitals, and at least 18 were released shortly thereafter.

Within hours, emergency workers decontaminated the Hyatt Regency O’Hare and allowed people back inside. Six-foot-tall rabbits, foxes and dragons poured into the lobby, chatting and giving each other high paws.

The source of the gas was apparently chlorine powder left in a ninth-floor stairwell at the hotel, according to the Rosemont Public Safety Department. Investigators believe the gas was created intentionally and are treating it as a criminal matter.

One man dead, another wounded in Aurora shootings

AURORA – Police in Aurora said they’re investigating a pair of shootings that left one man dead.

Police responding around 11:35 p.m. Saturday to a call of shots fired on the city’s West Side found 46-year-old Daniel W. Spencer on a sidewalk with mul-

tiple gunshot wounds. Spencer was treated at Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora before being flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. He was pronounced dead around 4:30 a.m.

Police said that around midnight, they learned of a second gunshot victim who had been dropped off at Mercy Hospital by

a friend. The 29-year-old man told police he was shot while walking, then ran to the friend’s home.

Police believe the shootings were related.

PALATINE – An 18-year-old Palatine High School runner struck by a car during an early morning team workout has returned to school.

Ryan Kissane was leading an early-morning off-season run last month when he was struck by a car at the intersection of Palatine and Rohlwing roads. He broke numerous bones and suffered other injuries. The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported that Kissane was honored at a basketball game between Palatine and Fremd High School Friday.

Survivors gather to recall fateful Pearl Harbor attack

By JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER The Associated Press PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii –Veterans who survived the Pearl Harbor attack that launched the United States into World War II attended Sunday’s 73rd anniversary ceremony with the help of canes, wheelchairs and motorized scooters.

Wearing purple orchid lei, about 100 Pearl Harbor and World War II survivors attended the ceremony overlooking a memorial that sits atop sunken battleship USS Arizona. Many of them arrived well before sunrise.

This year’s anniversary of the Japanese attack is the 10th consecutive one that USS Utah survivor Gilbert Meyer attended. But it’s getting harder for Meyer, 91, to travel to Hawaii from San Antonio.

Asked if he planned to attend next year’s anniversary, he responded with a chuckle, “That’s like asking me if I’ll still be alive.”

Harold Johnson, 90, is mak-

ing it a goal to attend the 75th anniversary, even though traveling from Oak Harbor, Washington, isn’t always easy. “I’ve got a little scooter that’s a real life saver,” the USS Oklahoma survivor said.

Johnson had been aboard the Oklahoma for just six months on Dec. 7, 1941, looking forward to a day off and a “date with a little Hawaiian girl.” He was shining his shoes when the first alarm went off, he recalled.

“Three months later, I ran into her in town in Honolulu,” he said of his date. “She was mad at me because I stood her up.”

For many of the approximately 2,000 survivors who remain, there also are more painful memories.

Keynote speaker Gen. Lori Robinson, commander of Pacific Air Forces, told the crowd of several thousand about four of the nine remaining survivors of the USS Arizona. Don Stratton, 92, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Lauren Bruner, 94, of

La Mirada, California, were two of six men who escaped the inferno that engulfed the forward half of the ship by negotiating a line, hand over hand, about 45 feet in the air, despite burns to more than 60 percent of their bodies. John Anderson, 97, of Roswell, New Mexico, was ordered off the ship, but he didn’t want to leave behind his twin brother, Delbert. Even though he was forced into a small boat that took him to Ford Island, he commandeered an empty boat and returned to the Arizona to rescue three shipmates. But he never found his brother.

“When the Arizona sank, she took with her 1,177 sailors and Marines,” Robinson told the crowd, which included Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and Hawaii Gov. David Ige. Robinson also highlighted the sacrifices of the Honolulu Fire Department, which was dispatched to respond after receiving the alarm at 8:05 a.m. “Without knowing it, the Honolulu Fire Department was going to war,” she said.

House fire starts in basement, causes $50,000 in damages

By CHRIS LaFORTUNE clafortune@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Emergency crews needed two hours to extinguish a house fire Saturday afternoon in Joliet.

Neighbors of a single-family home at 353 Mississippi Ave. contacted the Joliet Fire Department about the fire at about 1:09 p.m. Saturday, Acting Battalion Chief Rodney Leggero said Sunday.

“This got called in by several neighbors who had seen heavy smoke coming from the roof area,” Leggero said.

When fire crews arrived, they discovered both heavy smoke and fire, Leggero said, and the fire went to a box alarm.

“The fire started in the basement and traveled through the upper two floors pretty rapidly,” Leggero said.

Damage is estimated at about $50,000, Leggero said.

The exact cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday morning.

“It was a heavy volume of fire with a heavy spread,” Leggero said. “It affected all levels.”

There were no injuries reported, and the homeowners were not home at the time of the fire. The house did not burn to the ground, but was boarded up.

It was the second fire that crews responded to that day.

At about 11 a.m. Saturday, crews were called to a fire on an exterior wall of a home at 815 Chase Ave. A neighbor discovered the fire, Leggero said, and crews were able to put it out quickly.

There were no injuries, and the cause of that fire remains under investigation, as well.

Joliet woman struck by car, killed

By CHRIS LaFORTUNE clafortune@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A 33-year-old Joliet woman was struck by a car and killed early Sunday morning on the 500 block of Gardner Street.

Syreeta R. Campbell, 33, of Joliet was pronounced dead in the Presence St. Joseph Medical Center Emergency Room at 1:52 a.m. Sunday morning, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Campbell was struck by a car on Gardner just south of 5th Avenue, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said.

At about 1:30 a.m., the car Campbell was riding in pulled over to the side of the road.

She and a man she was driving with got into an argument, Benton said. Campbell exited the car, as did the man.

Campbell’s companion got the license plate of the vehicle as it left, Benton said, and police found the driver at her home. There was no indication of alcohol or other impairment on the other driver’s part, Benton said.

“It was a very unfortunate incident,” he said. “Because of the way it unfolded, there’s no criminal charges that we’re bringing at this time.”

Is high school football in jeopardy?

IHSA understandably concerned about concussion lawsuit, impact on programs

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – One week after attending an Illinois High School Association news conference because Wilmington won its first state title in football, coach Jeff Reents spoke at another IHSA news event about something he wasn’t particularly happy to address.

That was the very future of football in this state, especially for small school programs such as Wilmington’s. Friday’s news conference, conducted at Lincoln-Way West, was organized by the IHSA in response to a class-action filed against it in Cook County Circuit Court.

The lawsuit, regarding the association’s handling of concussions in football, could result in severe consequences for the sport. For instance, the increased presence of medical personnel to monitor concussions at all games and practices has the potential to lead to cuts in programs throughout Illinois that would be unable to fund the extra expense.

While the filing of a suit obviously is no guarantee that any school would have to drop the sport, the potential of just such an outcome because of judicial advocacy was clearly a good enough reason for the IHSA to make such a public defense of its current policies.

In addition to IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman and attorney Thomas Heiden of Latham & Watkins – the association’s counsel – at the news conference, the event also featured Reents and two other recognizable figures in the sport, Frank Lenti and D’Wayne Bates.

Reents, who also is his school’s assistant principal, talked about how important high school football is to Wilmington. He thinks the IHSA is doing a good job of educating coaches about safety issues not only in football but in all sports.

And I know that along the fence line I have this grandma or grandpa who are watching their grandson and they’ve been pretty much been there every Friday night.

“One of the very best experiences that we’ve had at Wilmington was to win the state title. And to see kids come back and say, ‘Thank you, coach, so much for what football has meant to me, and thank you for everything that you’ve done.’ Twenty years from now is when we’ll look back and see what kind of effect football and coaching have had on these kids.

“I would hate to see a student athlete not have that opportunity to play in football

Mount Carmel’s Lenti, the state’s all-time winningest coach, believes coaches and schools are able to oversee the safety of their athletes.

“Coaches are always going

to be aware of a great impact on a youngster; and when that happens, we’re always going to be cautious to take care of kids,” Lenti said. “We all understand that a broken arm, a broken collarbone or a broken leg is going to heal, but we don’t always know what’s going to happen with their head.

“So I think that we need to give our high school coaches a lot more credit than is being doled out as far as taking care of our student athletes. My

concern is that we don’t legislate football out of existence.

What’s most important is that we do what’s right but that we don’t over- or under-react to any situation that are going on in present-day society.”

Bates, a standout at Northwestern before playing in the NFL, including with the Bears, is the athletic director at LaSalle-Peru. He doesn’t believe high school football should be compared to the sport at the collegiate or professional level.

“I do commend IHSA for what they’ve done,” Bates said. “They’ve done a tremendous job of making football not only just an enjoyable experience but also safe to play.

In my perspective as an AD and coach, they’ve afforded our coaches an opportunity to be educated so that we can go out and implement things to make this game safe and fun.”

Bowlsby and his conference athletic directors are meeting in New York this week, and he anticipates the topic of how best to determine a champion will come up. “This will be a catalyst for discussion for sure,” Bowlsby said.

The Big 12 can’t hold a championship game because it only has 10 teams, but the conference – along with the Atlantic Coast Conference – is trying to change that. The leagues have proposed getting rid of NCAA rules requiring a conference have 12 teams split into two divisions to play a title game.

Holding one with 10 teams that play a nine-game round-robin schedule isn’t ideal because the game would always be a rematch, Bowlsby said.

“I don’t know with 10 it’s something that we would necessarily do,” Bowlsby said. But conference expansion is a complicated issue that goes well beyond whether to hold a championship game.

GRAPEVINE, Texas – The first College Football Playoff expanded the national championship race, made the regular season even more intriguing and produced a final four with major star power.

• Nick Saban’s No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Urban Meyer’s No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes at the Sugar Bowl.

• Marcus Mariota, this season’s Heisman Trophy front-runner, and second-seeded Oregon vs. Jameis Winston, last season’s Heisman Trophy winner, and defending national champion Florida State at the Rose Bowl.

The winners will meet Jan. 12 in Arlington, Texas, at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

A new era, indeed, but with the same old problems: What is the best way to pick the teams and what should be the criteria?

After six weeks of ranking teams, the selection committee shuffled its deck Sunday and dealt the Big 12 out of the playoff.

“We’re smarting today,” Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said.

TCU, which had been third in the rankings last week, ended up sixth. Big 12 co-champion Baylor moved up a spot to No. 5, but both were squeezed out by Ohio State, which won over the committee with a doozy of a closing statement in its conference championship game: a 59-0 victory against Wisconsin for the Big Ten title.

“I would say that human nature is that the most recent thing that occurs – in this case, the most-recent achievements – are the most impactful,” Bowlsby. “Ohio State’s victory over Wisconsin was complete domination, and in that regard they played their way into the position they now enjoy.”

Baylor coach Art Briles wasn’t so sure.

There were five active athletic directors on the 12-member committee, one from each of the Big Five conferences. The Big 12 was represented by West Virginia’s Oliver Luck. The Mountaineers have been in the Big 12 for three seasons.

Maybe the most jarring part of Sunday’s unveiling was TCU dropping three spots from the last rankings.

The Horned Frogs seemed to be secure at No. 3 last week, and then beat lowly Iowa State by 52 on Sunday.

Long said TCU’s drop was more about the Buckeyes than the Frogs, but it highlighted a problem with weekly rankings. Commissioners initially leaned toward not having them when they first started putting the playoff together.

While Long would emphasize every week the committee started with a clean slate, traditionally college football polls create a pecking order for teams that only gets disrupted by losses.

The top six teams in last week’s rankings all won Saturday. On Sunday, the teams were the same, but the order was very different.

And it left many fans wondering why.

Long said it was too soon to say what changes the committee would recommend to the commissioners.

Seattle topples another top team for 3rd straight The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA – Russell Wilson threw two touchdown passes, ran for another score and the Seattle Seahawks stifled Philadelphia’s high-powered offense in a 24-14 victory over the Eagles on Sunday.

Wilson had 263 yards passing and ran for 48 to help the Seahawks (9-4) win their third straight. The defending Super Bowl champions have victories over NFC West-leading Arizona (10-3), San Francisco (7-6) and Philadelphia (9-4) in the past three weeks.

The NFC West-leading Cardinals (10-3) took the lead when Drew Stanton threw a 26yard touchdown pass to Jaron Brown in the third quarter.

Jamaal Charles scored two first-half touchdowns on a 63yard run and 18-yard pass from Alex Smith, but the Chiefs (76) were shut out in the second half.

Cleveland contained the Colts quarterback until the final minute, but couldn’t finish him off.

The Colts (9-4) trailed, 217, in the third quarter, but stormed back behind Luck, who finished 24 of 53 for 294 yards.

The Browns (7-6) got two defensive touchdowns, but Cleveland’s offense, led by struggling quarterback Brian Hoyer, couldn’t do enough to keep the team’s playoff hopes from fading.

Steelers 42, Bengals 21: At Cincinnati, Ben Roethlisberger threw three touchdown passes, including a 94-yarder to rookie Martavis Bryant in the fourth quarter that was the longest play from scrimmage this season.

The win turned the AFC North into a wide-open race.

In a game they had to win, the Steelers (8-5) caught up and ran away with 25 points in the fourth quarter.

For Cincinnati (8-4-1), it was a second straight lopsided loss at home to a division rival. The Bengals fell to Cleveland, 24-3, before going on the road and winning three straight to take control of the division.

Ravens 28, Dolphins 13: At Miami Gardens, Florida, the Baltimore Ravens played more than 17 minutes before picking up a first down, then overcame a 10-point deficit to win.

The Ravens rallied with

consecutive touchdown drives of 97 and 75 yards, and added the clinching score after a favorable replay reversal.

A gamble by coach John Harbaugh in the third quarter helped. The Ravens made a first down on fourth-and-1 in their territory, jump-starting the TD drive that put them ahead.

The victory gave Baltimore (8-5) a significant edge over Miami (7-6) in the AFC’s scramble for a wild-card playoff berth.

The Dolphins, who haven’t been to the postseason since 2008, are now a long shot with three games to go.

Raiders 24, 49ers 13: At Oakland, California, Derek Carr threw three touchdown passes and the Raiders put a major dent into San Francisco’s dwindling playoff hopes in the Battle of the Bay. Carr completed 22 of 28 passes for 254 yards and completely outplayed counterpart Colin Kaepernick as the Raiders (211) won their second straight home game surrounding last week’s 52-0 loss at St. Louis.

With a second straight loss the 49ers (7-6) are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in coach Jim Harbaugh’s four-year tenure.

San Francisco is two games out of the second wild-card spot with three games remaining after making three straight NFC title games.

Panthers 41, Saints 10: At New Orleans, Cam Newton passed for three touchdowns, appeared to incite a scuffle with

frustrated New Orleans after he went over the pile for another score, and the Panthers ended a six-game skid.

Jonathan Stewart added a 69-yard touchdown as the Panthers (4-8-1) pulled closer to NFC South leader Atlanta (5-7), which plays at Green Bay on Monday night.

Newton’s scoring passes went to Kelvin Benjamin, Greg Olsen and Fozzy Whitaker.

New Orleans (5-8) lost its fourth straight home game to drop a half-game behind Atlanta.

Lions 34, Buccaneers 17: At Detroit, Matthew Stafford threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns – including one off a fluky deflection late in the game.

The Lions (9-4) trail firstplace Green Bay by a half-game in the NFC North; the Packers host Atlanta on Monday night.

Tampa Bay (2-11) was eliminated finally from playoff contention – the NFC South’s mediocrity could only keep the Bucs in it for so long. They turned over the ball three times in the second quarter against Detroit and never led.

Calvin Johnson had eight catches for 158 yards and a touchdown for Detroit, which snapped a nine-game losing streak in December.

Rams 24, Redskins 0: At Landover, Maryland, the Rams have back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1945, giving them their first winning streak of the season.

Jared Cook caught two touchdown passes, Tavon Austin returned a punt 78 yards for a score, and the defense allowed 206 total yards.

The Rams (5-7) sacked Colt McCoy six times. He suffered a neck injury on the sixth sack just before the two-minute warning, so Robert Griffin III finished the game in his first appearance since getting benched two weeks ago. St. Louis blanked Oakland, 52-0, last Sunday.

The Redskins (3-10) dropped their fifth straight.

Texans 27, Jaguars 13: At Jacksonville, Florida, Arian Foster ran for 127 yards and a touchdown, and the Texans won consecutive games for the first time since Week 2.

Foster’s 1-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter gave Houston (7-6) a comfortable cushion in what had been a back-and-forth game.

The Jaguars (2-11) led 13-10 at halftime, but did little after the break.

Vikings 30, Jets 24, OT: At Minneapolis, Jarius Wright’s 87-yard touchdown reception from Teddy Bridgewater in overtime gave the Vikings the win.

After forcing the Jets to punt to start the extra period, the Vikings faced third-and-5. Bridgewater was blitzed and threw high on a bubble screen to his right. Wright jumped, made an off-balance grab, slipped by Jaiquawn Jarrett and outran defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson the rest of the way.

Former Vikings receiver Percy Harvin had a 35-yard touchdown reception and a 47-yard kickoff return while finishing with 124 yards on six catches. This was his first game in Minnesota in more than two years after playing his first 3½ seasons with the Vikings (6-7), who beat the Jets for the first time in eight matchups since 1975.

Gerald Hodges returned an interception of Geno Smith for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, but the much-maligned second-year quarterback bounced back for the Jets (2-11) by going 18 for 29 for 254 yards and gaining 33 yards rushing on six attempts.

Giants 36, Titans 7: At Nashville, Tennessee, Eli Manning threw for 260 yards and a touchdown, and the Giants snapped a seven-game skid.

The Giants (4-9) won for the first time since Oct. 5 with two rookies having big games.

Odell Beckham Jr. set a team rookie record with his fourth game with 100 yards receiving this season: 11 catches for 130 yards and a TD. Andre Williams ran for a season-high 131 yards, including a 50-yard TD. Tennessee (2-11) lost its seventh straight and for the 11th time in 12 games with a performance that had fans booing and even a handful wearing paper bags over their heads. This is the franchise’s longest skid since losing 11 straight in 1994 as the then-Houston Oilers.

On Friday, coach Josh Oster’s squad beat the Missouri teams of Fort Zumwalt West, 53-19, Staley, 41-27, and Fox, 746. Lockport defeated Belleville East, 63-14, Yorkville, 39-30, and Edwardsville, 34-28, on Saturday while falling to Holt, 34-24.

GVSU Early Bird: No. 16 Lewis men’s track and field team earned one NCAA automatic qualifying bid and five NCAA provisional marks on their way to finishing second at the GVSU Early Bird, hosted Friday by Grand Valley State Uni-

versity in Allendale, Michigan. The Flyers had 115 points.

Andre Barnes earned the NCAA automatic qualifying bid with a first-place mark and school-record time of 47.67, while Chris Wilson finished fourth in the same event with a NCAA provisional time of 49.5.

Kevin Dorenkamper (Minooka) picked up a pair of NCAA provisional marks. He finished second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.27) and ran a leg of the runner-up 4x400 relay (3:16.67) with Barnes, Wilson and Brock Robertsen. Isaac Jean-Paul had a pair of second-place finishes including a NCAA provisional leap of 6 feet, 11¾ inches in the high jump. He also finished second in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 5¾ inches.

Andrew McLain picked up both a first and second-place finish for the Flyers. McLain won the 3,000-meter run (8:34.77) and was a runner-up in the 1-mile run (4:15.24). Adam Barr was the final NCAA provisional qualifier with a thirdplace heave of 59 feet, 6¼ inches in the weight throw.

GVSU Early Bird: Lewis’ Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook) and Amanda Farrough combined for three wins and three NCAA provisional marks to lead the Flyer women’s track and field team at Friday’s season-opening GVSU Early Bird, hosted by Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan.

Stennis won the 200-meter run with a career-best and NCAA provisional mark of 24.28 and ran a leg of the runner-up and NCAA provisional setting 4x400 relay (3:53.59) with Cortney Cross, Amy Polhemus and Zoe Mead.

Mead also took second place in the 600-meter run (1:36.57).

Farrough set a personal-best and NCAA provisional standard with a first-place showing in the 3,000-meter run (9:59.23).

Teammate Jaime Hershfang was a runner-up with a time of 10:40.08. Farrough also took home the 1-mile run title with a time of 5:06.29.

During the bidding at the bridge table, it is important to evaluate your hand correctly. It is not a fixed value – the high-card count. The bids of the other players can raise or lower the apparent strength of your hand. This week, let’s look at some evaluation issues.

Taking the second question first, I do not. Two aces and a king are usually worth an opening, especially with a five-card suit (and a major), and – very important – an easy rebid on the next round.

After the given start to the auction, North judged well to invite game opposite a passed partner, realizing that his singleton rated to be valuable.

Then South, who had an absolute maximum, should have immediately bid four hearts. He could not have had a stronger hand.

At the table, though, South passed.

However, he played it nicely. He won the first trick with his club ace and led his spade.

And when West ducked, declarer won with dummy’s king and continued with the spade queen, discarding a diamond.

Later, when the hearts were 2-2 and the spade 10 dropped, South took 12 tricks.

Left bundle branch block has several possible causes Dear Doctor K: I recently had an ECG that showed that I have a “left bundle branch block.” What does this mean?

Dear Reader: When your heart beats, it does so in response to electrical signals. Your heart muscle is crisscrossed by a network of electrical pathways. A bundle branch block is caused by an abnormality in one of those pathways.

The electrical signals that orchestrate each heartbeat work this way.

A small group of cells called the sinoatrial (SA) node generates an electrical impulse. The signal travels on pathways through the walls of the upper chambers (the atria), then forks into two separate channels and continues down the inside walls of the lower chambers (the ventricles).

The pathway that leads to the left ventricle is called the left bundle branch. The left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. The pathway that leads to the right ventricle is called the right bundle branch.

The right ventricle pumps oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen and then enters the left ventricle.

The signals coming down the left and right bundle branches tell the left and right ventricles to “pump now!”

The electrical impulse must travel down the right and left bundle branches at the same speed for the ventricles to contract at about the same time. A block in either branch slows the signal, delaying the heart muscle’s response. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

My colleague Dr. Peter Zimetbaum is a cardiologist at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He explains that a right bundle branch block is harmless.

But a left bundle branch block may signal high

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff blood pressure, thickening or stretching of the heart wall, coronary artery disease or simply advancing age.

When a left bundle branch block appears on an ECG, the next step is usually an echocardiogram. This noninvasive imaging test shows whether the heart structure looks normal. If it does, treatment might entail more aggressive blood pressure control.

Some people with a left bundle branch block eventually need a pacemaker. But most people can function normally without one.

One exception is people who also have a weakened heart muscle associated with advanced heart failure. Individuals in this group may be good candidates for an implanted pacemaker-like device with an added wire to stimulate the left ventricle. This device can coordinate the timing of the contractions on the left and right sides of the heart. This enables the heart to pump more efficiently.

Try not to be overly anxious about your diagnosis of left bundle branch block. Most of my patients with this condition have not seen the condition progress. But do get yearly checkups that include an ECG. And be on the lookout for troublesome symptoms, including shortness of breath, lagging energy or trouble exercising. Such symptoms could be a sign of one of the treatable medical conditions, like heart failure, that is sometimes found in people with left bundle branch block.

Dear Abby: My husband, “Norm,” has become profoundly deaf. He has a cochlear implant in one ear and a hearing aid in the other; neither has helped much. He has extreme difficulty with speech recognition. We can talk together in the quiet of our home as long as I sit right next to him and speak slowly. We use assisted-listening devices to communicate with each other in the car or at a restaurant.

Norm’s hearing loss has affected us as a couple.

We no longer have a social life. When Norm and I are out together, we become “invisible” to other couples.

It’s just too much work for anyone to communicate with us.

We are about to move to a retirement community where one meal a day is included in the dining room. I’m worried about how we will navigate the social aspects of eating with others, who will rapidly decide they don’t want to eat with us again because of the difficulty of trying to chat with Norm.
