St. Rose Catholic Church – Wilmington In 1844, the Catholic community in Wilmington was served by Rev. John Ingoldsby, who came from St. Patrick’s Church in Joliet. In 1851, the parishioners of St. Rose began construction of a small church building that was completed in 1855.

Before the construction

David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes.

He and his students are looking for of this small church, Masses were celebrated in people’s homes. In 1865, the parishioners built a larger church with seating for 500. As the congregation continued to grow quickly, the church also became small, and in 1883, construction of a new church began with a seating capacity of 700.

This new large stone church cost approximately $45,000 to build, and the first Mass was sung on Christmas Day 1886. The new St. Rose Catholic Church, built in

the Gothic Revival style, is part of the mid-19th century picturesque and romantic movements in architecture, reflecting society’s taste for buildings inspired by medieval design.

The mostly identifiable feature of the Gothic Revival style is the pointed arch used for windows, doors, and decorative elements like porches, dormers, or roof gables. Other style details include steeply pitched roofs and front-facing gables with wood trim. Gothic Revival-style churches often

have a Norman castle-like tower with a crenellated parapet or high spire. These elements can be seen in the Then photograph of the St. Rose church.

The St. Rose Catholic School, located just south of the church, was built in 1948 and currently serves grades one through eight. For more than 150 years, the St. Rose of Lima Parish has served the Catholic community of Wilmington. The Now photograph shows a similar view of the church today.

Festival has become a tradition for cast and audience

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Gnome is where the heart is.

“That’s been the message of this show over the years, and it relates to [everyone] – kindness is better than being a jerk,” said Reg McReynolds, one of the directors of the “Festival of Gnomes” that was presented Saturday and Sunday at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park in Joliet.

Limacher and the late Georgiann Goodson began staging the nondenominational holiday show in 1976.

“The program is geared to children,” Goodson told The Herald-News in 1978.

Like several other cast members, McReynolds started performing in the show more than 30 years ago.

“I did it as a kid, then I didn’t for a few years before I came back to it as an adult.

There are cast members who came to see the show when they were children, and there are a lot of former cast members in the audience each year,” McReynolds said.

The show also has several second- and third-generation cast members, and the audience has many parents who saw the show when they were younger and now are bringing their own children.

The 90-minute show presents short vignettes of what life is like for the magical little creatures. Cast members can switch from gnome to narrator to troll to forest animal to hunter within a few minutes.

Audience members learned what happens when a troll captures a gnome and observed the gnome wedding rites, which bear a strong resemblance to “The Chicken Dance.” According to gnome history, the Alaskan Gold Rush turned out to be the result of a friendship between a psychic otter and a gnome

who always felt too cold.

“It’s never been the exact same show. It’s a robust script, but there’s some ad lib. There are few skits we

do every year, but others will switch in and out,” McReynolds said.

Among the perennial characters are Kostja, the naughty

gnome played by McReynolds this year, and Snotgurgle, an evil troll portrayed by Kevin Healy. Veteran audience members smiled as Snotgur-

gle began stalking through the audience and spraying silly string as if it were mucus.

Nonprofit seeks food donations

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A nonprofit organization started by a Plainfield educator is looking for more volunteers and donations to help children and their families have food.

Jeff Peterson, assistant principal at Liberty Elementary School, started Creekside Cares in 2010 when he was a physical education teacher at Creekside Elementary School.

At the time, he paid $50 worth of food from Aldi for eight students who could benefit from it, he said.

Now the organization has expanded, serving between

250 to 300 students a week and 22 schools within Plainfield District 202. It’s also assisting schools in Lockport.

Creekside Cares put food in backpacks for students from low-income families to pick up and bring home during the weekend. The program is discreet for children who have food throughout the week but not enough on the weekends.

“A lot of parents have said the weekends are a difficult time,” he said.

He said it’s strictly optional program for the parents to participate in. They determine how long they want to be a part of it, he said.

Restaurants proposed for former Crabigale’s site in downtown Joliet

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two potential developers of the former Crabigale’s site in downtown Joliet have proposed restaurants on the first floor but have different plans for the upper two stories.

Crabigale’s was the comedy club that was the last business to operate in the Loughran Building, an 1890 building on the northeast corner of Chicago and Cass streets.

The building went into foreclosure after Crabigale’s closed. The city, which received the building as a donation in 1999 and sold it at a token price to the club owner, later acquired it out of foreclosure for $300,000.

Now, the city has two developers interested in reopening the ground floor as a restaurant, said Kendall Jackson, the city’s director of planning.

“They both involve a full-service restaurant on the first floor,” Jackson said.

“Then, the second and third

floor build-outs are a little bit different for each. One of them calls for banquet and meeting facilities on the second and third floors. The other calls for residences on the upper floors.”

The city does not propose an outright sale of the building, Jackson said.

Instead, the city would require $300,000 of investment into upgrading the building.

Once that threshold is reached, the building would be conveyed to the developer, he said.

The potential developers have not been named. Jackson said they are both individuals with restaurant and redevelopment experience.

The full plans likely are to be made public at a City Council committee meeting yet to be scheduled but likely to occur in January, Jackson said.

The next step, he said, is for a city review committee to interview the two developers in December and score their proposals so a recommendation can be made to the City Council.

City Project Manager Steve Jones said the potential staying power of both developers will be an important factor in the review process.

“The key here is it’s not just looking for someone to fill a space,” Jones said. He said the city is looking for a business person with a sustainable plan and financial wherewithal “to survive the lean years” and build the business over time.

“Both plans that are proposed would match up nicely with our plan downtown to generate more activity,” he said.

The city wants to bring more private business into downtown and is implementing a plan recently developed by the Camiros group that calls for more activity on Chicago Street.

At one point, the owner of the Lockdown Bar and Grill in Chicago planned to open a Joliet version of the restaurant in the Loughran building but abandoned the plan about a year ago.

Creekside Cares after start-

ing a coat drive at Creekside Elementary to help students he noticed who had no coats, gloves and hats.

Creekside Cares relies on food drives, food and monetary donations. While the organization seeks out grants, there is a need for more donations, he said.

If they were to pay out of pocket, the cost would be between $730 and $1,000 a week, he said.

“If we can get a consistent influx of donations, that would be great,” he said.

QUICK NEWS Conservation Foundation recognizes JJC The Conservation Foundation has presented the 2015 Sustainable Development Award to Joliet Junior College for implementing numerous sustainable features on its campus, according to a foundation news release.

Conservation program manager Jim Kleinwachter presented the award to professor Maria Rafac, who has served as the college’s sustainability coordinator for the past decade, at the foundation’s Fall Membership and Awards Dinner on Nov. 19 at Abbington Banquets in Glen Ellyn.

Some of the sustainable features found on campus include: • 124 acres of natural landscaping • 65 acres of savanna, wetland and prairie undergoing restoration • A Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design-registered greenhouse with a rain harvesting system • Low emission parking with

charging stations for electric vehicles • An 11-acre arboretum.

In addition, the college offers 18 courses in sustainability and a six-week sustainability course for faculty. Student involvement includes water quality testing, seed collection and planting, and on-campus restoration programs.

Herald Angels campaign seeks donations for United Way of Will County

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – A volunteer operator finished a call with an elderly client who receives a phone call each morning to remind her to take her medication.

The phone rang immediately after, with someone on the line struggling with job loss who Michele needed to vent Batara his frustrations and seek advice.

A few minutes later, a young mom called and needed referral where to find food and rent assistance for her family, and right after that, a man who wanted to end his life reached out to this volunteer operator for help before it was too late.

“I’ve been on the phone with people who have cried and cried, then stopped to listen to what I had said and replied, ‘Wow, I’ve never thought of looking at it that way, thank

you,’ or I’ve had repeat callers who just needed someone to talk to on a regular basis,” a Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties volunteer operator said.

The Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties has serviced the area for 39 years. It provides several services to the community, such as information and referral, telephone counseling, and support and reassurance calls. It holds an accreditation in suicide prevention and intervention through the American Association of Suicidology.

The crisis line has been an agency of United Way Will County since its conception, which has been the lifeline of the agency’s existence for almost four decades.

“Basically, without the United Way Will County funding, the crisis line would not be able to exist. The money supports the programs we provide here, and the biggest cost is the telephone because that is our service,” Crisis Line of Will and Grundy counties Execu-

tive Director Michele Batara said.

Batara said about 65 percent of the calls yielded last year were incoming calls and 35 percent outgoing calls. The line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for residents in Will and Grundy counties. The crisis line has one location where the calls are fielded, but several numbers to avoid long distance phone charges.

United Way of Will County President and CEO Mike Hennessy said 25 percent of the residents of Will County have reached out to one of the 46 agencies in the United Way of Will County branch in the past year.

Hennessy said money donated to the United Way Will County branch stays in the county, and supporters can be confident that their financial contributions reach the greatest number of people with their support.

So far, Monroe has been in Thailand for two months and Cambodia for one month.

In Thailand she lived with a family on their banana farm where she helped farm, pick weeds and shovel goat manure to use as fertilizer around the banana trees.

But she also was able to run a few English language camps for kids and adults from all different backgrounds.

In Cambodia, she stayed in an orphanage with 36 children ages 4 to 18 years old.

She “just simply did life with them,” she said.

Monroe became close with

a 14-year-old boy who had been abandoned on the side of the road, along with his siblings, with nothing but the clothes on his back. They would ride bikes together; she would watch him and the other children swim or play volleyball.

One day the boy asked Monroe to help him fly a kite.

Together they walked down a path along a rice field, him dragging his kite behind.

“I was just looking at him and thinking of everything he had experienced and how he was standing in a blistering hot rice field just choosing joy,” she said. “I learned a lot in that moment about choosing joy.”

While we are busy trying to spread Christmas cheer around our communities – visiting Santa, baking cookies, handing out gifts – one 18-year-old Channahon resident, Sydney Monroe, will be spreading cheer across the globe.

Monroe is part of a group of college-age students on a nine-month mission trip visiting and helping people in Thailand, Cambodia, South Africa and Nicaragua. The program is called the World Race Gap Year, through Adventures in Missions.

Instead of hanging ornaments on a tree with her family, going to holiday parties or shopping for presents at the mall with her friends, Monroe will be in South Africa celebrating Christmas at Hillsong Church, which she considers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“Although being away from my family and typical traditions like Christmas trees and food and movies will be super tough, it’s cool knowing that have we such an experience and might even have the chance to spread Christmas cheer to people who may have never had that cheer before,” Monroe wrote in a text to me.

She chose to take the year between high school and college to find out what God has planned for her, rather than what she had planned for herself. The mission trip seemed to be an opportunity to do that and deepen her

BOLINGBROOK – You may want to be suspicious of anyone giving out too many tasty treats for the holidays.

Shortly before 5:30 a.m. Nov. 23, police were called to the 500 block of South Bolingbrook Drive where a truck trailer had been broken into overnight, according to reports.

Lt. Carter Larry said the victim discovered someone had broken the seal on the trailer and “removed approximately 40 cases of chocolate caramel truffles.”

Police said no suspect information was available.

JOLIET – The city of Joliet has begun using a new community alert and notification system.

Until last week the city sent out notices to residents via text message and email using Nixle software, but Utilities Director James Eggen said the Everbridge system allows them to send “more specific notices for a particular address or location.”

“This system is going to be shared [among different departments] and give us more flexibility,” Eggen said.

Public utilities will use the Smart Message-Community Alert Network to announce scheduled water and sewer repairs in the area or send messages out if there is a water main break. Public Works will do the same with street closures, road projects and parking bans.

Residents can also get announcements from The City

Information Desk about garbage pickup and festivals. Police Department will send out safety tips, crime alerts and crime prevention information and the Fire Department will send out notices for hydrant testing.

“There’ll be integration with emergency management needs as well,” Deputy Fire Chief Ray Randich said. “If there was a fire or crash where something spilled, we’ll use this to let people in that neighborhood know to keep everyone inside or if they had to evacuate.”

Non-emergency information can be sent to a home phone, work phone, texted to a cell phone, or emailed account between the hours of 6 am and 9 pm. Land lines listed in the white pages have automatically been placed in the mass notification system.

So said Sue Cordano of Joliet about her husband, Don Cordano.

The founder and owner of Cordano, Severson & Associates Ltd. in Crest Hill, Don also was an accounting professor at Lewis University in Romeoville, the saxophone and clarinet player of the Don Cordano Orchestra, board member and treasurer for four Joliet organizations, a lifetime member of four Joliet clubs and the active member of multiple professional organizations.

In 2005, according to Sue, Don and Sue established a Don L. Cordano Endowed Scholarship at Lewis University, and provided for the construction of the Cordano Heritage Circle and Founder’s Garden, also at the university.

“He wanted to give back,” said Marisue Grabavoy of Shorewood, Don’s daughter.

“Nobody could figure out how he got so much done in a day,” Sue said, “but he did.”

Marisue said her father began his association with Lewis University as a student; he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1956 and then earned his Master of Business Association from DePaul University in Chicago.

Don then returned to Lewis University where he taught for more 35 years, Sue said. She estimated Don taught approximately 6,000 students during his teaching career. As much as Don loved teaching, he also wanted to apply his skills and began his accounting firm.

Greg Severson, who began working for Cordano, Severson & Associates Ltd. in 1983 and now owns the business, said he was flattered that Don wanted him to continue the business Don grew and credits Don for teaching him the skills that enabled him to do so.

“He was a mentor to me,” Greg said.

To stay connected the greater accounting community, Don belonged to the National Society of Accountants, the Institute of Management Accountants, the American Management Association, the

In 1989, National Society of Accountants honored Don as Accountant of the Year.

Don also authored articles for accounting publications and lectured in more than 20 states. He wrote the original “Generally Accepted Tax Accounting Principles” published by the National Society of Accountants. He is the past president of the Success Institute, Inc. And yet, Don still had time to serve Joliet Area Community Hospice, Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Will Grundy Center for Independent Living and the Rialto Foundation.

Marisue said her father understood the importance of serving the community in which he lived.

Don also belonged to the Joliet Elks, Loyal Order of Moose, Knights of Columbus and The Old Timers Baseball Association.

Jim Cordano of Plainfield, Don’s son, said his father took more leadership roles after he retired. Jim feels his father’s sterling work ethic came from Don’s parents, who always worked hard even though they could not provide the extras for their only child.

Don tried to inspire others – especially his children – to succeed, too, Jim said.

“He always stressed the importance of self-reliance, being your own boss and controlling your own destiny as much as you could,” Jim said. “He made sure we developed our talents to the best of our abilities instead of just doing the minimum.”

But Don was not all work and no play. Building on a passion for music begun in boy-

day and Saturday,” Sue said.

“They played weddings, anniversaries, private clubs, Christmas parties. He had a full life.”

Don was 81 when he died Sept 7 after a two-year battle

with pancreatic cancer.

MARGARET H. FLATT Margaret H. Flatt (nee Loucks), of Manhattan, passed peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2015, after 101 years, 11 months and 9 days of life.

She was born to William and Jennie (Woodcock) Loucks on December 26, 1913.

Survived by two daughters, Donna (Bill) Chellios of Manhattan and Marian (Bob) Edmonson of Ottumwa, IA; one son, Marlin (Barbara) Flatt of Manhattan; 5 grandchildren, Connie (Doug) Koehn, Mark (Sandy) Chellios, Sheri (Mark) Jenny, Joe Flatt and Judy (Larry) Tierney; 10 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents, William and Jennie Loucks; one sister, Eleanor Setter; and one brother, Ora Loucks.

Margaret was married to Marvin Flatt on December 11, 1934. She was an Avon Rep until the age of 92. She enjoyed many forms of needlework and was a faithful volunteer for OCP making crosses and socks for soldiers. She was a member of the Manhattan United Methodist Church for many years.

Funeral service for Margaret Flatt will be Tuesday, December 8, 1:00 p.m. at the Forsythe Gould Funeral Home, Manhattan. Interment, Manhattan Center Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. until time of service.

ODELL FLOWERS Born: April 24, 1932 Died: Dec. 1, 2015

Odell Flowers was born in Edward, Tennessee on April 24th, 1932. He and his twin brother were the only children of Nellie (Bell) Davis and J.D. Flowers. Odell made his transition on

December 1st, 2015, surrounded by his family.

Odell moved to Joliet while in grade school. He accepted Christ as Lord and Savior at an early age while attending Second Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. T.M. King.

Odell was educated in the Joliet Public Schools. He was called Joliet Township High School’s “ace in the hole” in a newspaper article from 1951. He was a 5’8”, 145 pound dynamo who played halfback, linebacker, safety, punt and kick-off return man for the Big 8 Champion. He also served as captain of the team. After graduation, he served his stint in the Air Force and came back to work for Com Ed until he retired. Although he ran in the 100, 220 and 440 for the JT track team, he never again called upon his athletic skills. He spent his retirement fishing, a round of golf now and then, and time in his garden.

In August of 1956, Odell married Rosetta Brookins, whom he met through his brother and a friend, Maxine Boykin. From this union two sons were born: Ray Dell and Martyn Lance.

Odell was a devoted member of Second Baptist Church. He served on the Trustee Board, Finance Committee, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and worked with the Blessing Table (feeding the hungry and providing clothing). He visited the sick, and from his garden he would gather food and drop bags full on the doorsteps of members of the church. He also served as Cub Master for the Cub Scouts, among many other things.

Odell is preceded in death by his father, J.D. Flowers; twin brother, Othell Flowers; his maternal and paternal grandparents; Uncle Hallad; Aunts Captolla and Ceona; one nephew, Jeffrey Flowers; one great nephew, Terry; and many cousins.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 59 years, Rosetta; two sons, Ray D. (Mary Jane) Flowers of Lancaster, California and Martyn L. (Linda) Flowers of Joliet, Illinois; four granddaughters, Carborsha, Keisha, Krystal and Jasmine; and one grandson, Raphael Flowers; five great grandchildren, Daryl Junior, Nyerra, Ameer and Malik; his mother, Nellie Davis; a godchild, Kevin (Mel); and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

MICHAEL GREEN FONTE Michael Green Fonte, 35, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 4, 2015.

An evolutionary film theorist, newspaperman, and film consultant, Michael was driven by a great desire for learning. He was described by his closest friends as an amazing spark and a true intellect. He studied evolutionary theory at Cambridge University in England and Russian propaganda cinema at the University of Labor and Social Relations in Moscow, Russia. His study of the Russian language in his teen years spurred an interest in language, international affairs, and his ancestry. He will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity, sharp mind, and passion for film and research.

Born on January 30, 1980, in Fairmont, West Virginia, Michael was the son of Nicholas Michael Fonte and Patricia Ann (Green) Springer. He attended Fairmont Catholic School before he and his family moved to Shorewood, Illinois in 1992. He attended Illinois Math and Science Academy and returned to Minooka Community High School, where he was class president, in 1998 to graduate with his peers. While there, he wrote, produced, & hosted a CBS show in Chicago called, “Different Drummers.” He also interned at the International Field Museum of History in Chicago, Illinois and studied in a summer program at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Michael went on to study at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts where he earned his Bachelor’s degree.

During his time there, he became a well-known expert in American politics and worked on the original McCain campaign. He co-founded United Leaders, whose mission was to inspire youths to pursue careers in political service and help them see politics as a means for social change.

Michael then worked as a journalist in Joliet, Illinois and Martinsburg,

Philippi, and Elkins, West Virginia and had a knack for investigative reporting.

He continued on to Binghamton University in New York where he earned a Master’s degree in English with a concentration in evolutionary film studies. While there, he taught highly innovative interdisciplinary courses that used the evolutionary sciences to study film. Michael recently completed his Ph.D in English with a scholarly focus on evolutionary film studies from Binghamton University. Upon finishing his doctoral degree, Michael planned to return to California to continue work on his current project, Vandalia, with a storyline set in West Virginia. Michael was preceded in death by both of his grandmothers, Susan Fonte and Geneva Green; and his uncle, Philip Green.

He is survived by his father, Nicholas Fonte; mother, Patricia Springer; stepfather, Dean Springer; sister,

Catherine Fonte Fahey, her husband, Michael, and their son, Cedar; sister, Christina Hillsberg and her husband, Ryan; grandfathers, Nick Fonte and Robert Green; aunt, Diana Craig and her husband, Kevin; uncle, Jim Green; and many other beloved extended family members.

Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Monday, December 7, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, December 8, from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Jim O’Connor as celebrant.

Maybelle was born in Peotone and graduated from Peotone High School.

She liked to garden and play cards (mostly Euchre), but her passion was crocheting, her creations can be found spread throughout her family and her friends. While most of the time Maybelle was a home maker, she was also the Wilton Twp. Tax Assessor for many years and she was a longtime member of Wilton Center Federated Church, Wilton Center.

Road salt provides impetus for Illinois spending agreement

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – The need for road salt appears to have helped melt Gov. Bruce Rauner’s resolve – at least temporarily – to stand firm against spending any state money without an overall deal to solve the state’s budget impasse.

The Republican governor stressed “public safety” – including snow-busting road salt with winter’s approach – as a reason he reached agreement last week with House Democrats on a $3 billion plan designed mainly to free up already-collected tax money owed to local governments.

But a spending breakdown circulated by Democrats and obtained by The Associated Press shows the agreement includes more than $400 million in spending requested by Rauner, much of which appears to be going to routine agency operations.

The first-year executive has opposed “piecemeal” spending approval as the state enters its sixth month of the fiscal year without a budget. But in addition to salt and police training, he sought money for postage, federal funding for adult education programs, operational expenses for the comptroller, and funds for contractors to handle property rental and maintenance of government offices.

The Senate returns to Springfield Monday to take up the matter. If it approves, Rauner plans to sign it and Illinois cities and counties will get $583 million in remitted motor fuel tax revenue, $340 million in “use tax” money collected on purchases from out of state and $154 million for emergency-dispatch centers.

In addition, $1 billion will go to pay lottery prizes for winners of more than $600.

“This bill was a compromise,” Rauner said. “It does add a bit to our deficit

spending, but in the spirit of compromise – obviously the Democrats, the speaker’s caucus, would love to spend far more than what we’re spending right now.”

The governor’s office refused to confirm or detail what he asked for in the measure. But the Democrats’ analysis shows the governor’s requests included $99 million for mental health centers and nursing homes, $84 million for property rental and maintenance, and $62 million for veterans’ homes, as well as $105 million for state police and prisons operations and road salt for the transportation department.

The list reflects pressure building on all sides to keep government running even though there’s no spending framework.

In exchange, Democrats were given the go-ahead to finance programs that are a priority for them, such as $165 million for low-income energy assistance and $18 million to keep domestic violence shelters afloat. The money for shelters, and another $10 million to operate the secretary of state’s office, is from the general checking account.

Although the House adopted the measure, 107-1, Republicans squawked. Although most of the money comes out of specially established funds and not general tax revenue, Rep. David Harris, a Republican from Arlington Heights, asked the proposal’s sponsor, Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, why she wasn’t including spending authority for all of the hundreds of special funds in the budget.

“The governor decided it was time to govern, and so he has asked for items that will make it possible for his agencies to operate the way they should,” Currie, a Chicago Democrat, responded. “He was very resistant earlier in the session, and I believe he still is, to using monies in all the special funds.”

ATLANTA – Jimmy Carter inspired pronouncements of answered prayers Sunday, revealing that his latest brain scan showed no signs of cancer four months after the former president announced that melanoma had spread to his brain and put himself “in the hands of God.” Carter first announced the news at the small church where he frequently teaches Sunday school in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, and then in a two-sentence written statement as word spread from Maranatha Baptist Church.

Carter always starts his lessons with a brief update on his recent activities. This week, that included a visit to his doctor to learn the results of an MRI brain scan. Previous tests found four lesions on his brain were still there but had responded to an August radiation treatment and regular doses of a recently approved drug called Keytruda to help his body seek out any new cancer cells.

San Bernardino calls for unity, not rancor

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – At a church, a mosque, a makeshift street-corner memorial and other sites, they gathered Sunday to mourn the 14 victims of the San Bernardino massacre and lament that the community has now been added to the tragic list of U.S. cities scarred by terrible violence.

Residents struggled to come

to terms with the violence and hoped the community would unite in mourning and not be divided by the disclosure that the killers were a religious Muslim couple.

“It’s unfortunate that we’re on this list now, a list like Newtown, Aurora and others where such tragic events occurred,” Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., told a crowd at a mosque. “It’s not how I want San Bernardino remembered.”

Meanwhile, investigators were looking into what led Tashfeen Malik and Syed Farook to attack the gathering of Farook’s co-workers on Wednesday.

Authorities were trying to determine if Malik radicalized her American-born husband, Farook, and was the driving force behind the rampage, two officials said Sunday.

Challenge for socialists as Venezuelans vote

CARACAS, Venezuela – The socialist system built by Hugo Chavez faced its gravest electoral test Sunday as Venezuelans cast ballots in what seems to have become a tightening race for control of the national legislature.

Voters woke to state-sponsored fireworks and music in working-class parts of Caracas.

Wealthier neighborhoods, which tend to favor the opposition, were spared the early morning cacophony, but many headed to the polls at the crack of dawn anyway, anxious to cast their ballots early in case violence should break out later in the day.

Obama: U.S. will defeat terror threat’s new phase

By JULIE PACE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – In a rare Oval Office address, President Barack Obama vowed Sunday night the U.S. will overcome a new phase of the terror threat that seeks to “poison the minds” of people here and around the world, as he sought to reassure Americans shaken by recent attacks in Paris and California.

“I know that after so much war, many Americans are asking whether we are confronted by a cancer that has no immediate cure,” he said, speaking from a lectern in his West Wing office. “The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it,” he declared.

The president’s speech followed Wednesday’s shooting in San Bernardino, California, that killed 14 people and wounded 21. Authorities say a couple carried out the attack and the wife pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and its leader in a Facebook post.

Obama said that while there was no evidence the shooters were directed by a terror network overseas or part of a broader plot, “the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization.”

“This was an act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people,” he said in the 13-minute address.

In speaking from the Oval Office, Obama turned to a tool of the presidency that he has used infrequently. His decision to speak in prime time reflected the White House’s concern that his message on the recent attacks hasn’t broken through, particularly in the midst of a heated presidential campaign.

Yet Obama’s speech was likely to leave his critics unsatisfied. He announced no significant shift in U.S. strategy and offered no new policy prescriptions for defeating IS, underscoring both his confidence in his current approach and the lack of easy options

for countering the extremist group.

“Nothing that happened in the speech tonight is going to assuage people’s fears,” Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican presidential candidate, said on Fox News.

Obama did call for cooperation between private companies and law enforcement to ensure potential attackers can’t use technology to evade detection. He also urged Congress to pass new force authorization for military actions underway against IS in Iraq and Syria, and also to approve legislation to bar guns from being sold to people prohibited from flying on planes in the U.S. for terrorist concerns.

And he implored Americans to not turn against Muslims at home, saying the Islamic State is driven by a desire to spark a war between the West and Islam. Still, he called on Muslims in the U.S. and around the world to take up the cause of fighting extremism.

Since the release of the video, Emanuel forced Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy to resign and formed a task force to examine the department in an effort to calm the city and deal with the most serious crisis of his administration.

But the pressure on the mayor has not diminished.

The calls for the mayor to resign – something he said he won’t do – have grown louder from protesters in the city, including more than 200 people who shouted that he step down during a Sunday afternoon march in downtown Chicago.

Protesters counted to 16 during the march, a number that has taken on a symbolic significance since the demonstrations began.

Emanuel initially said a federal civil rights investigation of Chicago police tactics would be “misguided” because the

U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago already was investigating the incident. But Emanuel later reversed course and said he would welcome the Justice Department’s involvement – something that politicians including Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan have called for.

On Friday, Chicago released hundreds of pages that show police officers initially reported a very different version of the encounter with McDonald than the video shows. That further angered activists and protesters, who were already accusing the city of covering up what really happened the night McDonald was killed.

Neither Emanuel’s office nor the police department immediately responded to a request for comment on reports of a federal investigation.

The Justice Department in the last six years has opened more than 20 investigations of police departments. In March, the department released a

scathing report of the Ferguson, Missouri, police force that found pervasive civil rights abuses, and in May, it reached a settlement with Cleveland police that called for sweeping improvements – including to that department’s use of force policies. It opened an investigation of Baltimore police in May after demonstrations there turned violent in response to the death of a black man in police custody.

Civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson said he was pleased with the decision to investigate Chicago. Jackson said he hoped that the investigation would focus not only on the police department, but on Emanuel’s office and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, which he and others have criticized for taking so long to bring charges against Van Dyke.

“All three of them – the police, City Hall and the prosecutor’s office – are suspect,” Jackson said. “We cannot trust them.”

Justices look anew at affirmative action in Texas

By MARK SHERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Basketball coaches, leading military officers and many of the country’s biggest businesses agree that the Supreme Court should preserve the use of race as a factor in college admissions.

But they may be in a fight they cannot win as the justices take up a case that presages tighter limits on affirmative action in higher eduAbigail Fisher cation.

The court is hearing arguments Wednesday for the second time in three years in the case of a white Texas woman who was rejected for admission at the University of Texas.

Abigail Fisher did not graduate in the top 10 percent of her high school class, which would have won her a spot at the state’s flagship college in Austin. She also did not get in

under the program that looks at race among many factors and through which Texas admits about a quarter of its incoming freshman classes.

Lawyers for Fisher say the university has no good reason to consider race at all because the “top 10” plan that the state put in place in 1997 works well to bring in Hispanic and African-American students.

Texas said the plan by itself is not enough and it needs the freedom to fill out its incoming classes as it sees fit.

Fisher’s argument did not persuade the conservative-leaning federal appeals court in New Orleans, which has twice upheld the university’s admissions process. The second ruling, last year, followed a Supreme Court order to reconsider Fisher’s case.

Among the many groups urging the justices to leave the Texas program in place are the coaches, including Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and University of Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma, who said they have

firsthand knowledge of the value of diversity on campus. “We are not writing as dilettantes or tourists. We live this life,” the coaches wrote.

The high court has been much more skeptical of the role of race in public programs since Justice Samuel Alito joined the court, taking the seat of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. In 2003, O’Connor wrote the court’s opinion in Grutter v. Bollinger that allowed colleges and universities to use race in their quest for diverse student bodies.

The conservative majority of which Alito is a part generally is cohesive on issues of race. It stuck together in cases that stripped the Justice Department of its power to approve in advance changes related to elections in all or parts of 16 states with a history of discrimination in voting, and threw out local plans to integrate public schools in Louisville, Kentucky and Seattle.

The only break from this pattern was in June, when

Justice Anthony Kennedy joined the four liberal justices to preserve a key legal tool in fighting discrimination in housing.

“Every time they take one of these cases, I worry,” said Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Ifill’s worry may be especially apt in Fisher’s case because there is no split among lower courts to attract the justices’ attention. In addition, Fisher herself will not benefit from the ruling because she graduated from Louisiana State University in 2012, and one liberal justice, Elena Kagan, is absent from the case due to her earlier work on it while serving in the Justice Department.

So it appears that the conservative justices have more they’d like to say about affirmative action.

The first time Fisher’s case was heard by the court, shortly after her graduation, people on

both sides of the issue expected a decision that sharply cut back on or eliminated public universities’ use of race in admissions. Instead, after sitting on the case for eight months, the justices released an opinion that ordered appellate judges to look anew at Fisher’s complaint to see whether Texas sufficiently explained its need to take account of race in admissions.

The vote was 7-1, with only Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in dissent. Kagan sat out the first round, too.

The outcome, in June 2013, concealed tense divisions among the justices, according to author Joan Biskupic’s account in her book “Breaking In” about Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Kennedy initially had written a decision striking down the Texas program that split the conservative and liberal justices, Biskupic wrote.

Sotomayor drafted a blistering dissent that eventually caused Kennedy to reconsider, Biskupic said.

CHICAGO – The U.S. Justice Department is expected to launch a wide-ranging investigation this week into the patterns and practices of the Chicago Police Department after recent protests following the release of a video showing a white Chicago police officer shooting a black teenager 16 times, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The person said the Justice Department is expected to make the announcement of a civil rights investigation this week. The person was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly because it has not yet been announced and only spoke the AP on condition of anonymity.

The civil rights probe follows others recently in Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri, and it comes as the police department and Mayor Rahm

Emanuel are under intense scrutiny over their handling of the October 2014 death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Officer Jason Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder Nov. 24, more than a year after the killing and just hours before the release of police dashboard camera footage showing the officer shooting the teenager.

The video shows McDonald veering away from officers on a four-lane street when Van Dyke, seconds after exiting his squad car, opens fire from close range. The officer continues shooting after McDonald crumples to the ground and is barely moving. The video does not include sound, which authorities have not explained.

The Chicago City Council signed off on a $5 million settlement with McDonald’s family even before the family filed a lawsuit and city officials fought in court for months to keep the video from being released publicly. The city’s early efforts to suppress its release coincided

At San Diego, Brock Osweiler threw for one touchdown, and Danny Trevathan intercepted Philip Rivers and returned it 25 yards for a score, leading the Denver Broncos to a victory against hapless San Diego.

Osweiler improved to 3-0 since taking over for the injured Peyton Manning. The AFC West-leading Broncos are 10-2. San Diego fell to 3-9.

Thousands of orange-clad Broncos fans cheered the visitors in what might have been the penultimate Chargers game in San Diego. Chairman Dean Spanos wants to move to an industrial suburb of Los Angeles, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell last week warned San Diego that it had until the end of the month to come up with an acceptable plan for a new stadium.

JETS 23, GIANTS 20, OT:

At East Rutherford, Randy Bullock kicked a 31-yard field goal on the first possession of overtime to give the Jets a stunning win that sent the reeling Giants to their third straight loss.

The Jets (7-5) didn’t seal the win until Josh Brown missed a 48-yard field goal field goal with 6:33 left in the extra session, his first miss in 26 attempts this season. That

left many questioning Coughlin and wondering whether the Giants (5-7) are headed for a fourth straight season out of the playoffs.

Coughlin elected to go on a fourth-and-2 from the Jets 4 with his team ahead 20-10 with under nine minutes to play. The play failed.

Ryan Fitzpatrick rallied the Jets from a 10-point deficit in the final 4:24 of regulation.

Fitzpatrick hit Brandon Marshall for a 9-yard touchdown with 27 seconds remaining to tie it and went 36 for 50 for 390 yards.

SEAHAWKS 38, VIKINGS 7: At Minneapolis, Russell Wilson threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another, Seattle’s defense didn’t allow a score and the surging Seahawks won their third straight game with a romp over Minnesota.

Doug Baldwin had two touchdowns and 94 yards receiving and Thomas Rawls rushed for 101 yards and a score as the Seahawks (7-5) did whatever they wanted with the ball against an injury-depleted Vikings defense.

NFL rushing leader Adrian Peterson was limited to 18 yards on eight carries, and the Vikings (8-4) needed a 101-yard kickoff return by Cordarrelle Peterson in the third quarter to keep from being blanked.

BILLS 30, TEXANS 21: At Orchard Park, Tyrod Taylor threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Charles Clay with 1:53 left to lead Buffalo over Houston.

Taylor finished 11 of 21 for 211 yards and three TDs and also scored on an 8-yard run.

Buffalo (6-6) snapped a twogame skid and gained ground on the Texans (6-6) in the AFC playoff race. Sammy Watkins had three catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.

The Texans had a fourgame winning streak snapped.

Houston’s Brian Hoyer finished 26 of 44 for 293 yards with three touchdowns but was unable to deliver in the clutch. Hoyer threw four consecutive incompletions on the Texans’ drive after Clay’s touchdown.

The Bills took over and Dan Carpenter secured the

win with a 36-yard field goal with 33 seconds remaining.

Carpenter otherwise struggled, missing a 50-yard field goal attempt and an extra point.

TITANS 42, JAGUARS 39: At Nashville, Marcus Mariota scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 87-yard run midway through a wild fourth quarter, and Tennessee edged Jacksonville to snap its 11game home losing streak.

The Titans (3-9) had not won on their own field since Oct. 12, 2014, when they needed a blocked field goal to beat these very same Jaguars 1614. The teams combined for much more than that Sunday, scoring six touchdowns in the fourth quarter alone.

Mariota finished with 112 yards rushing, becoming the first Tennessee player to run for at least 100 yards since Chris Johnson on Dec. 29, 2013. The Heisman Trophy winner also threw for three touchdowns and 268 yards.

The Jaguars (4-8) failed at the chance to sweep Tennessee for the first time since 2005. Blake Bortles threw for 322 yards and five touchdowns.

BENGALS 37, BROWNS 3:

At Cleveland, Andy Dalton threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score and the Cincinnati Bengals moved closer to a playoff berth and the AFC North title with a win over woeful Cleveland, which dropped its seventh straight.

Dalton connected with A.J. Green for a 23-yard TD pass in the second quarter and the Bengals moved to 10-2 for just the second time in team history.

Cincinnati needed a complex scenario to clinch a playoff spot this week, and even if that doesn’t happen, the Bengals still are poised to make the postseason for the fifth season in a row.

Green finished with 128 yards on five catches.

The Browns (2-10) lost for the second time in six days and had two more starters go down with injuries in a season that can’t end soon enough.

BUCCANEERS 23, FALCONS 19:

At Tampa, Jameis Winston threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans with 1:39

remaining to give Tampa Bay a victory over Atlanta.

The No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft also scored on a 5-yard run and scrambled up the middle of the field 20 yards on third-and-19 to prolong the third game-winning drive of his young career.

Lavonte David sealed the fourth win in six games for the Bucs (6-6), intercepting Matt Ryan’s pass intended for Julio Jones on Atlanta’s final possession. DOLPHINS 15, RAVENS 13: At Miami, the Dolphins intercepted a pair of deflected passes from Matt Schaub to score two touchdowns 20 seconds apart late in the first half, and held on to beat Baltimore.

The score was 0-0 when Reshad Jones intercepted a pass batted by defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to set up the game’s first score. On the next play, Ryan Tannehill hit a leaping DeVante Parker at the goal line for a 38-yard touchdown.

Three plays later, defensive end Derrick Shelby slapped a pass in the air, caught it and ran 22 yards to the end zone, with Schaub giving chase in vain.

The Dolphins (5-7) improved to 4-4 under interim coach Dan Campbell and ended a streak of five consecutive losses to the Ravens (4-8).

CARDINALS 27, RAMS 3: At St. Louis, Running backs David Johnson and Kerwynn Williams scored a touchdown apiece and Arizona stuffed St. Louis (4-8).

Johnson, a rookie, had 99 yards on 22 carries in his first start and caught one of two TD passes by Carson Palmer, who led an offense that rolled up 524 yards. Williams scored his first career TD on a 35-yard run.

Larry Fitzgerald made his 1,000th reception and topped 1,000 yards for the seventh time.

The Cardinals (10-2) have won six in a row, and seven of eight since losing 24-22 at home to St. Louis in Week 4.

NEW ORLEANS – Cam Newton passed for five touchdowns, capped by a 15-yard scoring strike to Jerricho Cotchery with 1:05 to go, and the unbeaten Carolina Panthers clinched the NFC South with a 41-38 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Carolina, the only remaining unbeaten team in the NFL, has the ninth 12-0 start in league history.

Newton, who was 28 of 41 for 331 yards, twice had to lead the Panthers back from fourth-quarter deficits as the Saints (4-8) tried desperately to avoid a four-game losing streak. Jonathan Stewart had a 5-yard scoring run on a pitch from Newton.

Drew Brees passed for 282 yards and three touchdowns.

Saints linebacker Stephone Anthony returned a fumble 31 yards for a score and also became the first NFL player to return a blocked extra-point kick for 2 points in NFL history.

EAGLES 35, PATRIOTS 28: At New England, Najee Goode scored on a blocked punt, Malcolm Jenkins returned an interception 99 yards for another touchdown, and Philadelphia held on for an improbable victory over New England.

Darren Sproles returned a punt 83 yards for the Eagles’ second special teams touchdown, giving Philadelphia a 21-point lead before the Patriots came charging back.

Tom Brady threw for a touchdown to make it a twoscore game and then, after an onside kick, ran it in from the 1 yard-line to cut it to seven points with 3 minutes left.

New England’s second onside kick failed, but the Patriots (10-2) forced a third-down fumble to give Brady one more chance.

The comeback fell short when Brady’s passes bounced out of his receivers’ hands.

Losers of three in a row, the Eagles (5-7) had given up 45 points apiece in consecutive weeks heading into the game against the defending NFL champions and their Super Bowl MVP quarterback.

Now it’s the Patriots on

a losing streak – their first back-to-back regular-season losses since 2012.

CHIEFS 34, RAIDERS 20: At Oakland, Jeremy Maclin had two touchdowns catches after fourth-quarter interceptions, and Tyvon Branch returned a third interception from Derek Carr for a game-clinching score against his former team and Kansas City rallied for its sixth straight win.

The Raiders (5-7) were leading by six points and driving for more when Carr’s mistakes changed the tide of the game and helped keep the Chiefs (7-5) in the lead in the AFC wild-card race.

Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third score and Maclin had 95 yards on nine catches to lead the Chiefs.

Carr threw for 283 yards and two touchdowns, but his three fourth-quarter interceptions sent Oakland to its fourth loss in five games.

Lockport wrestlers claim second-place finish SUBMITTED REPORTS ARNOLD, Mo. – Lockport’s wrestling team dropped a 38-34 decision to Holt, Missouri in the championship meet of Saturday’s 16-team Sauer duals at Fox High School.

After winning three duals on Friday to take their pool, the Porters won three more times in Saturday’s title bracket before falling to last year’s Class 4A Missouri runner-up.

In the finale, Lockport got pins from Shayne Oster (145 pounds), Chandler Proszek (160), Ronald Tucker (285) and Anthony Molton (106), a major decision from Brendan Ramsey (126) and decisions from David Balderrama (220) and Abdullah Assaf (120), who beat a defending state champ. The Porters led, 34-26, with two matches left before Holt got two falls. During the two-day event, Assaf defeated two Missouri champions, and Brandon Ramos beat one.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Rockhurst 3, Lewis 2: The

No. 20 Flyers saw their season come to an end when they fell 27-29, 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 15-11 in the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals at Ferris State to No. 7 Rockhurst. Lewis was the No. 3 seed, and Rockhurst was seeded No. 2.

It was the third time Rockhurst and Lewis played in 2015,

and all three matches went five sets. Rockhurst won in the regular season, while Lewis won in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament two weeks earlier. On Friday, Rockhurst (33-3) pulled out the tiebreaker against coach Lorelee Smith’s Flyers, who finished with a 31-5 record.

The match opened with an epic first set featuring 17 ties and eight lead changes. Lewis struggled in the next two sets, with its only lead in either set coming in the third at 1-0 but the GLVC Champion Flyers didn’t roll over, and took the fourth set. The fifth set opened with a 3-0 run by Lewis but Rockhurst grabbed its first lead at 6-5 and went up 9-5 as part of a 5-0 run. Lewis got to within a point at 11-10, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

For the Flyers, Aly Schneider hit .385 with 19 kills. Elizabeth Hyland added 17 kills and 15 digs. Morgan Cebula hit .500 with 13 kills and only one error. Cassidy Parsons hit .320 with 11 kills. Defensively, Nicole Yuede recorded 33 digs while Maddie Seliga had 25 digs.

Lewis alumni drafted: The Moncton Miracles of the National Basketball League of Canada drafted former Lewis University standout Julian Lewis with the second pick of the third round. Lewis start-

ed 109 of the 112 games that he appeared in from 2011 to 2015.

He averaged 9.1 points and 6.8 rebounds, while scoring 1,018 points. The three-time GLVC all-defensive selection’s best season was in 2013-14, when he averaged 14.3 points and 8.7 rebounds.

Andre Barnes cruised to the 400-meter dash title with a NCAA Provisional mark of 47.72. Chris Wilson placed second in the event with another NCAA Provisional time and personal-best mark of 48.62.

Barnes, Wilson and Matt Jemilo and Jesus Gonzales won the 4x400 relay with a NCAA Provisional mark of 3:16.79.

Lewis claims sixth place: The No. 11 Flyers recorded eight NCAA provisional marks to place sixth with 58 points at Grand Valley State’s Holiday Track and Field Open.

Amanda Farrough notched an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:14.5 to finish second overall in the 5,000-meter run. The time is also the fastest in school history, besting the previous standard of 16:23.3, set by Kasia Arient in 1997. Kristen Bonso added a NCAA provisional mark in the same race with a personal-best finish of 17:04.24.

Chantel Stennis won the 400-meter dash with a NCAA provisional showing of 55.49 and added another provisional mark with a victory in the 200-meter dash (24.57). She added a NCAA provisional time of 7.71 in the preliminary heats of the 60-meter dash. The Flyers netted three NCAA provisional marks in the triple jump, including a school-record first-place leap of 40’3¼” by freshman Cierra Pulliam.

That jump breaks Vaida Usaite’s previous standard of 40’1½” set in 2001.

Amber Cook was third in the triple jump with a mark of 39’4”, while Mercedes Porter was fourth in the event with a leap of 38’4¼”. Lane Kadlec earned a NCAA Provisional mark in the shot put with a toss of 44’1 ¼”.

A year ago at this very time, the Baylor Bears were green with envy of the four teams selected to participate in the inaugural College Football Playoff. The TCU Horned Frogs were purple in the face over being left out. Indeed, with both Big 12 co-champions suddenly out of the playoff picture – and with Ohio State suddenly in it – there was tremendous controversy in the sport.

But today, there’s what?

There’s a playoff four that makes a whole lot of sense, that’s what.

Certainly, the teams in the playoff – Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State and Oklahoma – should sound right to anyone. Their precise order of seeding might not please everyone, but that’s hardly controversial by college football postseason standards.

Nos. 1 Clemson and 4 Oklahoma will meet in Miami, and Nos. 2 Alabama and 3 Michigan State in Arlington, Texas, with both games on Dec. 31.

The winners will square off Jan. 11 in Glendale, Ariz.

“We had a lengthy discussion about Michigan State and Oklahoma,” said Arkansas athletic director and playoff committee chair Jeff Long.

“The committee saw those two teams as very close, as you would expect.”

The decision to move the Spartans from No. 5 up to No. 3, and drop the Sooners from 3 to 4, was made in the wee hours of Saturday night, after MSU’s dramatic victory over Iowa in the Big Ten title game. Oklahoma was idle, which could explain its slight drop in the rankings. Or maybe the committee simply was tempted to move the Sooners to 4 – and therefore to Miami – instead of allowing them to play three hours from home in Texas, which might’ve been an unfair advantage.

Such a slight “controversy” is nothing in the big picture of things. And that big picture is this: Two years in, the playoff is looking like a great idea and a real success.

en’t exactly mirror images of each other, but they stand for so many of the same things.

It’ll be a slobberknocker on both lines of scrimmage. The tough, disciplined Hawkeyes are as equipped as any team to take on Stanford’s do-it-all star, Christian McCaffrey.

3. Oregon vs. TCU, Alamo

Bowl (Jan. 2): With a few weeks

to heal and a clean slate after a trying few months, these teams could be ready to stage an absolute classic. These quarterbacks – the Ducks’ Vernon Adams Jr. and the Frogs’ Trevone Boykin – are as explosive as any postseason pair, including Clemson’s Deshaun Watson and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield.

4. Baylor vs. North Carolina, Russell Athletic Bowl (Dec. 29): Assuming the Bears can field a healthy quarterback, this could be a first-to-50-pointswins type of deal.

5. USC vs. Wisconsin, Holiday Bowl (Dec. 30): It’s like a bizarro Rose Bowl. We’ll take it.

THE LOCALS

Notre Dame-Ohio State is a

big deal for obvious reasons – iconic brands, massive followings and all that good stuff.

It’s also interesting from a finer-toothed-comb point of view.

Last season, the Buckeyes withstood injuries at the quarterback position and won the national title. This season, the Irish have weathered the loss of Malik Zaire and the on-field education of DeShone Kizer without backsliding.

“We kind of stole a bit of what they did last year: not making excuses, just going and playing,” Irish coach Brian Kelly said. “The kids really responded to that. DeShone was able to lead our football team to some big wins.”

Against Tennessee in the Jan. 1 Outback Bowl in Tampa, Northwestern will take its crack at a sixth straight vic-

tory to cap an 11-win season.

The Wildcats are only 1-4 in bowl games under Pat Fitzgerald, but the last one was the best one – a 34-20 manhandling of Mississippi State to end the 2012 campaign.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to take the field one more time in what has been a special season for our student-athletes,” Fitzgerald said.

Northern Illinois will play Boise State in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23 in San Diego.

“This group of seniors has played in four straight MAC championship [games], with two victories, and now in four straight bowl games,” said Huskies coach Rod Carey. “I know they will be focused on ending their careers on a high note.”

In the auction, two clubs was an inverted minor-suit raise, showing at least game-invitational strength and denying a four-card major. Two hearts indicated a heart stopper and denied a diamond stopper. Three diamonds promised a stopper in that suit and game-forcing values. After three control-bids, North jumped to six clubs with such great trumps and no more control-cards to show.

South could draw trumps and try both major-suit finesses. But instead of that 76 percent line, why not guarantee the contract? After removing the trumps, cash dummy’s diamonds, ruff the diamond six, and return to dummy with a trump. Then play a heart and cover East’s card as cheaply as possible.

Suppose West wins South’s nine with the jack. What does he do now?

He is endplayed. Whichever major he returns concedes the contract-fulfilling extra trick.

In most people with a leaky mitral valve, the leak is too small to cause problems. However, severe mitral regurgitation can strain the heart and lead to atrial fibrillation or heart failure. Atrial fibrillation is a rapid or irregular heartbeat. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can’t effectively pump blood throughout the body.

Medication may ease the symptoms of a leaky valve, but it can’t correct the fact that the valve leaks.

When mitral regurgitation causes symptoms, surgery is definitely in order. But even if you don’t have symptoms, your heart’s left side may slowly enlarge and lose its ability to pump effectively. That’s why many heart surgeons say it’s better to fix the valve earlier rather than later.

When possible, repairing the valve is the best option. The surgeon may trim, shape or rebuild the tissue leaflets and reinforce the ring of tissue surrounding the leaflets.

Irreparably damaged valves may need to be replaced, either with a mechanical valve, or a valve from a cow or pig. Their heart valves are built much like ours, and can substitute for ours.

So, if your leaky valve needs treatment -- which it very well may not -there are effective options for you to consider.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor says I have a leaky mitral valve. What does this mean? And does it need to be treated if it’s not causing symptoms?

Dear Reader: The four valves of your heart work like one-way swinging doors: They open and close in a perfectly timed sequence to keep blood flowing through your heart in the right direction.

Your heart is a pump with four chambers.

Oxygen-poor blood enters one chamber. Then it flows into a second chamber, from which it gets pumped to the lungs.

There it gets oxygen and returns to a third chamber, and finally into a fourth chamber. From there, the oxygen-rich blood is pumped around the body.

The “leaflets” of a person’s valves (flaps of tissue that make up the valves) and nearby structures don’t always function as they should.

Perhaps because of the higher pressures in the heart’s left side, the valves there are particularly vulnerable to problems.

That includes the mitral valve, which separates the left upper and lower chambers of the heart.

If the mitral valve is misshapen or misaligned, it can’t close tightly between heartbeats. As a result, some blood spurts backward with each contraction. (I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, AskDoctorK. com.) This backflow is known as mitral valve regurgitation -- or a “leaky” mitral valve. It often creates a whooshing sound (called a heart murmur) when heard through a stethoscope.

Your doctor may suspect you have mitral regurgitation if you have a heart murmur or symptoms of the condition such as feeling breathless or very tired. You’ll get an echocardiogram, a test that uses sound waves

Dear Abby: Every year around the holidays, well-intentioned strangers wish me and my family “Merry Christmas!” Even though we are Jewish, I have always regarded it to be a kind gesture to spread good cheer. I smile and return the greeting.

My children have asked me why I don’t tell people we’re Jewish and that we don’t celebrate Christmas. I don’t feel I need to educate strangers when they’re just trying to be friendly, but my kids don’t agree. We’ve had several discussions about being friendly and polite, but still they ask if being Jewish is something to keep secret or be embarrassed about.

I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but I do want to give my kids the message that we are proud of who we are. How do you recommend I handle this situation, because it happens a lot? – Jill in Santa
