By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge ordered a murder suspect released from Will County Jail Tuesday while his trial is delayed.

Kenneth G. Edwards will be restricted to home confinement, Judge Edward Burmila ruled Tuesday.

Edwards, 47, was scheduled to face trial on Jan. 12 for the August 2012 slaying of Sean D. McGinn, 39, outside the KO Zone Boxing Club.

Special prosecutor Dave Neal told Burmila that DNA comparison re- Kenneth G. sults will not be Edwards completed by that time, which meant keeping Edwards in jail would violate his right to a speedy trial.

Neal said police recently used search warrants to obtain DNA from two people – one of whom was “difficult for law enforcement to locate.” Neal expects those results will not be returned from the lab for two more months.

The prosecution also wants to review cell phone records the defense obtained that show texts and calls between former co-defendant Jermain K. Ben-

nett, 41, and others around the time McGinn was killed.

On Aug. 9, 2012, McGinn, 39, parked his pickup truck behind the gym at 218 E. Cass St., which he co-owned with Bennett, who is Edwards’ cousin.

Police said McGinn had brought thousands of dollars to buy cocaine from Bennett, who instead planned to rob him. Edwards was waiting in the parking lot and shot McGinn twice while Bennett took the cash, according to investigators. Police said the drugs Bennett had promised to deliver did not exist.

Nearby residents overheard the shots and called police.

Bennett was arrested the day after McGinn’s slaying, while Edwards was arrested in October 2013. Bennett was also initially charged with murder, but has agreed to testify against Edwards in exchange for less prison time by pleading guilty to robbery.

Suspects can only be held in jail for 180 days unless both sides agree to delays – which usually happens when preparing a case for trial and has already occurred in this case. By releasing Edwards, the judge has “stopped the clock,” Neal said.

“Over (defense) objection, the motion to continue the trial is granted,” Burmila said.

“While the right to speedy trial is important, the right to a fair trial supersedes that.”

Edwards was ordered released on a $10 million recognizance bond. He will not be allowed to leave his parents’ residence unless he has to seek emergency medical treatment or to attend a religious function once a week. He is not allowed to consume alcohol unless it is part of the religious ceremony, Burmila said.

Edwards can meet with his lawyer, Doug DeBoer, if he provides 72 hours advance notice to the special prosecutor and Joliet police are allowed to enter the residence to confirm he is there, Burmila ordered.

“No ankle bracelet (is ordered) for now, but that could occur if the Joliet police find irregularities,” Burmila said.

DeBoer noted Edwards would also attempt to find a job upon his release from jail, but Burmila said the “importance of employment to one’s self-worth” had to be balanced against the serious nature of the charges against him.

“He’s not going to roam the streets. If he can arrange something over the phone, we can come back in here,” Burmila said.

McGinn’s relatives attended court Tuesday, but declined to comment after the proceedings.

t was an eventful 2014.

We at The Herald-News reviewed what happened in the past year and selected what we considered to be the top 10 stories of the year. All of the events covered in these stories not only had big impact in 2014, but will continue to affect people’s lives in the years to come.

Our top story is on the July 21 semitrailer crashes on Interstate 55.

First, there is the terrible impact these two accidents had on the families of the six people who died. But there are also lasting questions over

how semitrailers are regulated in our area, since motorists increasingly share the road with the big rigs.

We lost local soldiers this year – Army Pfc. Aaron Toppen and Marine Lance Cpl. Stephen Hancock. Three of the Hickory Street murder suspects were brought to justice. One of Joliet’s longest lived retailers, Grant’s Appliances, shut down. The will of the people had its way at the Plainfield Park District. And, the year is ending with an odd controversy over the future marquee for the Rialto Square Theatre.

There is more, of course, and it is below.

CenterPoint vs. Elwood

ELWOOD – The Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing has been a point of contention all year – having pinned Elwood village officials against CenterPoint Properties, the developer of two nearby trucking intermodals, in a series of hearings on how to best address safety concerns there.

The Illinois Commerce Commission – which governs the state’s railways – could call for the temporary shutdown of the controversial crossing early next year following a preliminary order issued in December by an ICC administrative law judge who called the crossing an “immediate safety concern.”

Crossing gates were broken nearly 50 times last year, and village of Elwood officials have tried for some time to steer semitrailer traffic away from the area despite opposite from CenterPoint and trucking companies. The goal in closing the crossing, according to the preliminary order, is to find a more permanent solution to the traffic problems.

CenterPoint, however, is concerned the closing doesn’t take into account the dangers of diverting truck traffic to other local roads.

The judge also ordered that the Illinois Department of Transportation hold quarterly meetings with CenterPoint, ICC, Elwood and Union Pacific to figure out long-term solutions.

In the meantime, IDOT would move forward with its study on a grade separation near Walter Strawn Drive and Illinois Route 53.

Collision on I-55 leaves six dead

CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – July 21 was a hard scene to swallow for first responders arriving at the scene of two deadly crashes that occurred within a half-hour of each other in an Interstate 55 construction zone.

The two crashes left six people dead and snarled traffic for hours within the Des Plaines River Bridge construction zone.

The semitrailer driver behind the wheel of the first crash – 51-year-old Francisco Espinal-Quiroz, of Leesburg, Indiana – quickly became the focus of the police investigation.

Espinal-Quiroz was charged with 15 counts of reckless homicide and two counts of falsifying logbook entries in connection with the crash. According to authorities, he told police at the scene he started work at 2:30 a.m. but had written in the logbook he had begun at 6:30 a.m.

Those who died in the first collision were Kimberly K. Britton, 43, and Piper Britton, 11, of Urbana; Vicky L. Palaciocs, 54, of Coal City; and Ulrike P. Blopleh, 48, of Channahon. Timothy Osburn, 64, of Urbana, also was involved in the first collision and was pronounced dead Aug. 6. The second collision that day killed Deividas Mockus, of Darien.

Over the course of the ongoing investigation, it was discovered Espinal-Quiroz was blind in one eye but has driven trucks since 1991 with a federal vision waiver. His license was renewed the day before the crash.

Up until the July 21 wrecks, it was a relatively quiet construction season in terms of fatalities for the construction zone. The two crashes marked the first fatal crashes in the construction zone all year.

Hickory Street murder trials

JOLIET – Three down, one to go.

Three suspects in the shocking and gruesome Hickory Street murders received their day in court in 2014. One woman agreed to testify against the others in exchange for a reduced sentence while the others will spend their lives in prison.

On Jan. 9, 2013, Terrance Rankins and Eric Glover Jr., both 22, were lured to Alisa Massaro’s house in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street expecting to party with Massaro and Bethany McKee. But Joshua Miner and Adam Landerman were waiting after the four allegedly made plans to attack and rob them.

Miner strangled Rankins while Landerman allegedly strangled Glover. The robbers got about $100.

“To take two lives for pocket change, cigarettes and drugs ... the only word I have for it is senseless,” Judge Gerald Kinney said.

The four suspects also desecrated the bodies and made plans to dismember them before police were called to the house, according to testimony at the various trials.

Massaro pleaded guilty in May to robbery and concealing a homicide in exchange for testifying against the others and a 10-year prison sentence. Kinney found McKee and Miner guilty during separate bench trials. Landerman is expected to face trial in 2015.

2 local men killed while in military

The deaths of Marine Lance Cpl. Steven Hancock and Army Pfc. Aaron Toppen left their communities distraught but brought them together to honor their memory.

Hancock, 20, of Coal City, died in May after falling from an aircraft during a training flight in North Carolina. Toppen, 19, of Mokena, was one of five American soldiers killed in June during a friendly fire airstrike in southern Afghanistan.

Their families and communities were deeply saddened. Hancock’s friends and family remembered him as a hardworking person who was full of joy. Toppen was remembered as a deeply patriotic person who died a hero.

Hancock was honored with a military funeral and hundreds of flags were waved by community members who lined the streets of Morris as his body was transported to the city from Chicago. Hundreds of people in Mokena gathered to honor Toppen as his body was sent home.

In August, Townline Road in Mokena was renamed Aaron Toppen Memorial Drive in his honor.

Plainfield Park District drama

PLAINFIELD – Out of the governmental mess that was the Plainfield Township Park District in 2014 came an example of how grassroots citizen action can influence change in the district and state.

The problems started when Peter Steinys and Janet Silosky were voted to the park district board in the spring 2013.

The two formed a majority vote with Commissioner Peter Hurtado and put Village Trustee Garrett Peck in charge despite Peck having no parks experience.

The move irked some residents, who formed a group called “Park Truth” and started attending board meetings and called for the resignations of the four officials while supporting commissioners Mary Kay Ludemann and Larry Newton.

Peck resigned Jan 23, saying he became a “lightning rod in the community.” Shortly after, Silosky alleged Hurtado was underhandedly selling his own product to the park district, and she began to support Ludemann and Newton. A new executive director was hired, and state officials passed a bill expanding the board from five to seven commissioners. The two new seats were appointed and will be up for election in April.

JOLIET – A court decision this year was one that many in Joliet had hoped for since 2005.

A federal judge ruled in favor of the city’s condemnation of the Evergreen Terrace housing complex. The case had gone to the U.S. Supreme Court in its nine-year journey to a ruling on Sept. 18.

Yet it’s not over.

Next up is a jury decision on how much the city should pay for the 356-unit, low-income apartment complex subsidized with federal money.

“Assuming that there is no negotiated settlement, that will go to trial sometime in March,” City Manager Jim Hock said.

The Joliet City Council is not as unified on the Evergreen Terrace takeover as it was when the lawsuit started. So, whether the final price is one the city is willing to pay is not a sure thing.

Even so, the Evergreen Terrace ruling was momentous given the titanic legal struggle.

“The court finds that the property was not decent, safe, sanitary or in good repair following $5 million in repairs and renovations,” U.S. District Court Judge Charles Norgle said in his ruling. “Blight at the property has not been eradicated as of 2012 or later.”

Evergreen Terrace ruling comes in

Controversy over new Rialto Theatre marquee

JOLIET – Concerns about the design and how it was chosen are what Joliet-area residents are campaigning against since the November unveiling of a new marquee for the Rialto Square Theatre in downtown Joliet.

Area businessman Ed Czerkies donated $350,000 to construct the new marquee, which would include a memorial to his parents.

The new sign also would have a video screen powered by light-emitting diodes.

An image revealing the design of the new marquee was met with a firestorm of criticism on several Facebook pages. Commenters said it looked like a “scoreboard” and that a sign reading “In memory of Michael and Mary Czerkies,” in honor of Czerkies’ parents, should be removed, preserving the public and historic nature of the building.

As residents protest, demand withholding of Rialto funding and attempt their own fundraising, Czerkies has said he would be happy to have his donation returned amid the controversy. But Rialto officials say the deal isn’t dead.

Grant’s appliances closes

The closing of several Grant’s Appliances stores in October was a mystery for customers.

It also was infuriating. After making purchases on appliances – with some customers spending upward of $20,000 – and receiving nothing in return, the inexplicable closing of the stores left customers confused and angry on how they would get either their money back or appliances they paid for.

While company owners remained silent, the Illinois Attorney General’s Office said in November Grant’s Appliances was undergoing a process similar to bankruptcy. The company was in massive debt to landlords and had poor sales since the Great Recession.

However, there was no guarantee customers would ever see their money again or get their purchases.

Inventory from Grant’s is being sold off as the company is liquidated. But for some customers, the reputation of the more than 90-year-old appliance retailer and its owners are ruined.

Teen murdered in her Romeoville driveway

ROMEOVILLE – Briana Valle’s parents did everything to keep their daughter away from a predator.

When the teenage girl met Erick Maya online and started a relationship with him, they kept her home, walked her to school, took away her phone. When Maya became angry and started threatening Valle, they moved from Cicero to Romeoville and filed a restraining order.

But on Feb. 13, Maya, 24, took a taxi to their house on Emery Avenue and waited as Valle, 15, and her mother, Alicia Guerrero, got in their car to leave for school.

Maya fatally shot Valle and wounded Guerrero. Police swarmed into the neighborhood and found Maya hiding under a porch two blocks away.

Following a two-week trial, jurors deliberated less than two hours before finding Maya guilty of murder and attempted murder.

Judge Robert Livas sentenced Maya to 122 years in prison.

“I’ve seen some cretinous things crawl into my courtroom, but [Maya’s] at the top,” Livas said.

Illiana Expressway moves toward approval

ILLINOIS – The controversial Illiana Expressway tollway project is finally picking up speed in spite of ongoing legal challenges from environmental groups and opposition from homeowners in the proposed pathway.

The project would link Interstate 55 near Wilmington to Interstate 65 in Indiana.

The $1.5 billion tollway project – to be funded with both state money and private investment – experienced a number of fits and starts this year.

But the Federal Highway Administration gave the Illiana Expressway its stamp of approval earlier this month, authorizing state transportation departments in Illinois and Indiana to move forward with final design, land acquisition and construction.

The next step would be land acquisition and the issuing of a request for proposals to the four pre-qualified bidders selected earlier this year.

Gas prices drop below $2 in Joliet area

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A steep drop in oil prices during the last quarter of 2014 has been a holiday gift to drivers that is expected to last into the new year.

Several gas stations in the Joliet area dipped just below $2 per gallon for unleaded gasoline Tuesday morning, according to prices listed at Gasbuddy.com. Local prices continued to drop throughout the day Tuesday.

The Speedway at Jefferson and Morris streets hit $1.99, while the Mobil in downtown Plainfield was listed at $2.01.

And the Sam’s Club in Romeoville hit $1.95.

The average national price per gallon dropped from about $3.27 in early October to $2.26 on Tuesday, according to data

by Gasbuddy.com.

Shell gas station owner Jay Gandhi said customers have been very happy about the steep drop in price at his store at 401 S. Larkin Ave. in Joliet, which was at $2.09 a gallon Tuesday morning.

“When they prepay, they come back for change,” Gandhi said. “That’s something that’s never happened, we’ve never seen.”

Gandhi said the low price has attracted more customers

to the gas station.

“When we have more activity, it helps the bottom line,” he said.

The price is expected to continue to drop into the new year, said Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis for Oil Price Information Service.

“The immediate expectations are lower prices,” Kloza said, adding that 2015 prices are predicted on average to be $1 a gallon less than 2014.

For the region, Kloza said prices are going to hover around $2 per gallon outside of Cook County. And the country as a whole will experience lower prices relative to 2014.

“We haven’t seen these numbers since 2009,” Kloza said. “This is more of a resemblance to the late 90s when there was an oil price war between OPEC and between non-OPEC countries.”

Kloza said the overall prices could range from about $2.09 to $2.80 for most of the year.

Just a handful of objections were filed, according to a check by The Herald-News Tuesday with numerous municipal and countywide offices handling nominating papers.

Objections were filed in Lockport Township Fire Protection District, Fountaindale Library District, and Joliet City Council. A check with

officials in Crest Hill, Lockport, New Lenox, Plainfield and Romeoville yielded no challenges, as of Tuesday afternoon.

Lockport Township Fire Protection District candidate Grant Spooner’s election petitions were challenged by Jim Pelc, a Lockport resident, who alleges Spooner made changes to his petition post-filing.

“The objection is based on … Spooner changing his petitions for nomination after they (had) already been filed,” Pelc wrote in his objection, noting two pages were filed without any term or po-

sition circled.

A second challenge came from Maurice Binns II, of Bolingbrook, who alleges Anne Burley, a candidate for Fountaindale Public Library District Board, does not have a sufficient number of signatures. Some who signed the petition live outside the library district, and in some cases, ditto marks were used in address lines, Binns II wrote in the objection.

We keep the heat running at a steady 50-degrees, which protects the interior walls from warping and the paint from cracking. It’s better to keep the home above freezing.”

The ideal situation is to keep the home occupied with a tenant to help cover the expenses of maintaining an additional home.

McGinnis says that insurance companies may require vacant properties to be professionally managed for damage control. Insurance companies may perform random property checks to make sure their insured clients are keeping their properties as protected and well running as possible.

Ross Dress for Less coming to Joliet

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ross Dress for Less is coming to Joliet, Mayor Tom Giarrante said.

The store will go into a spot OfficeMax is vacating at 2805 Plainfield Road, the mayor said.

Dublin, California-based Ross Stores did not respond on Tuesday to requests for information about what plans it has for Joliet.

But OfficeMax confirmed it will leave the location Jan. 17. The location is part of the Joliet Commons shopping center, across from the Louis Joliet Mall.

Giarrante said he welcomed the arrival of Ross Dress for Less.

“Any addition is better than

having an empty building,” he said. The mayor did not have an opening date for Ross.

According to Ross Store’s fourth-quarter report in November, Ross Dress for Less is an off-price apparel and home fashion chain with 1,214 stores in 33 states, the District of Columbia and Guam. The stores provide name-brand and designer apparel, accessories, footwear and home fashions at discounts of 20 to 60 percent off department and specialty store prices, according to the report.

There are 10 Ross Dress for Less stores in the Chicago region. The one nearest to Joliet is in Crestwood.

Ross Stores reported 7 percent sales growth in the first nine months of its 2014 fiscal year and 2 percent growth in

same-store sales.

While Ross Stores is growing, OfficeMax is contracting.

Office Depot Inc., which now owns OfficeMax, announced in August it would close 165 stores as part of a plan to close 400 stores over the next several years.

A second OfficeMax store in Joliet, located at 1520 Larkin Ave., will remain open.

Ross Dress for Less is the latest retailer that would fill a vacancy in the shopping centers around the Louis Joliet Mall. Earlier this year, Sports Authority took part of a store that formerly was a Mygofer and previously was a Kmart.

The remainder of the location is being taken by Fresh Thyme Markets, a specialty grocer that Giarrante said is slated to open in the spring.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Residents can expect more “big box” retail, reconstruction of the Route 30 corridor and a teachers contract with the Plainfield school district in 2015, village and school officials said.

Over the past year, Plainfield has seen residential construction almost return to pre-recession numbers. This growth also included several housing projects that the village approved in 2014.

The village recently authorized staff to move forward on determining if a tax-increment financing district is reasonable for the corridor.

“We’re just trying to look for the future,” Collins said.

“Five to 10 years down the way, it could be considered quite the visionary move.”

Plainfield School District 202 is the fourth-largest district in the state by enrollment.

So an ongoing contract dispute could have a large effect on the village’s students if teachers and administrators can’t work out an agreeable deal.

Teachers have picketed several board meetings in displays of solidarity, while board members continued to state support for financial stewardship. However, both sides have said they continue to negotiate in good faith, preventing a strike so far.

While residential growth is expected to continue, Mayor Michael Collins said the village has worked to get some big box retail in the major economic corridors. A big box store is considered to be a major retailer, such as Wal-Mart, Target or Macy’s.

“There’s a good possibility of big boxes,” Collins said.

“We’re negotiating with a couple right now. It looks very promising. This summer we will probably be able to do an announcement.”

Collins said the village hopes the recent proliferation of residential developments in the western part of the village, straddling the Kendall-Will County line, will bring commercial development in those areas.

Business development on the 126th Street and Drauden Road intersection and south of the Renwick Road and Drauden intersection is expected to increase in 2015.

“A lot of big boxes have told us, ‘You don’t have enough rooftops,’ ” Collins said. “So with more rooftops is going to come more commercial.”

The sheriff noted that being arrested for driving drunk brings a wide range of negative consequences. Drunken drivers face jail time, loss of their driver’s licenses, and steep financial consequences such as higher insurance rates, attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work and the potential loss of employment.

“Driving drunk is simply not worth the risk. So don’t take the chance. Remember, we will be out in force and we will be watching, so drive sober or get pulled over,” Callahan said.

The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

MORRIS – Grundy County sheriff’s deputies are out in force as part of the annual Illinois “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown on drunken drivers. The statewide effort will include alcohol and seat belt enforcement throughout Grundy County.

The crackdown also will be supported by national and state paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb drunken driving through the new year, according to a news release from Sheriff Kevin Callahan’s office.

Callahan said deputies will be aggressively looking for intoxicated drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving drunk. In addition, violators of seat belt laws will be ticketed.

Hearing over bullet in Joliet murder trial continued to January

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A decision on whether lab reports from a destroyed bullet can be used in a murder trial has been delayed until next year.

On Tuesday, unrelated court cases forced Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes to reschedule arguments as to whether a gun Eric Glover Sr. once fired can be shown to be the same weapon used to kill Velma Franklin.

Franklin, 30, was shot to death on June 17, 2002, in the Third Avenue home she shared with Glover Sr. and her four children. Glover Sr. was arrested soon after Franklin’s death, but was not brought to trial be-

fore charges were dismissed.

But Glover Sr. admitted to detectives he had fired another bullet into the wall two months earlier and was sentenced to prison for unlawful use of a weapon. While the wall bullet and the bullet recovered from Franklin’s head were tested at the same time, police gave the wall bullet a different case number than the murder investigation.

It was destroyed after the weapons case was resolved.

A cold case review by the state’s attorney’s office renewed murder charges in 2012 while Glover Sr. was, and is, serving a prison sentence for being an armed habitual criminal.

George M. Pappas, age 92, died at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home of natural causes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emanuel and Marianthe Pappas; wife, Irene (Policandriotes); and sisters, Helen (Fofo) and Stella Pappas.

Survived by his wife, Athena (Vandarakis); children, Michael G. (Marianne) Pappas, Barbara (Raymond) Pasteris; grandchildren, Julian Pappas, Brendan (Monique Silen) Pappas, Marisha (Michal Klus) Pasteris, and Jessica (Daniel) McDougal; and great-grand daughter, Scarlet McDougal.

He was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. An avid athlete, he coached the church G.O.Y.A. basketball team in the 1950’s to a national championship. Throughout his life he had been a member of The American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Order of AHEPA, and Loyal Order of Moose.

A graduate of Joliet Township High School Class of 1942, George was lettered in basketball. He attended Joliet Junior College. He served as Assistant Chief of Communications in Africa and Europe in the Army Air Corps in WWII. He owned the Boston Electric Shoe Repair and Travel Shop, George’s Drive-In, developed and operated The Cuckoo Clock Drive-In, The Iron Kettle Restaurant and George’s Pub. He managed restaurants for Faber Corporation in Chicago and was an area supervisor for Dairy Queen and Frosty Tips. In more recent years he clerked at Glenwood Marathon.

George Pappas was an energetic, positive, kind, loving and hard working man who in business and at home thrived on seeking creative solutions.

He loved golf, swimming, fishing and hunting. He had a close circle of family and friends, and was always concerned for and working to further the welfare of others.

Funeral Services for George M. Pappas will be Friday, January 2, 2015, at 8:45 a.m., from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church for services at 9:30 a.m. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Uber driver charged with Chicago sexual assault

CHICAGO – Prosecutors say an Uber driver accused of sexually assaulting a passenger in Chicago told the victim, “I made you happy,” after attacking her in his car and later at his apartment.

Thirty-year-old Maxime Fohounhedo was ordered held on $500,000 bail at a hearing Tuesday.

Fohounhedo is charged with criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual abuse over the Nov. 16 attack in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. He doesn’t yet have an attorney.

Uber removed him as a rideshare driver as police investigated.

The 22-year-old victim told police she was attacked between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. after being picked up from a bar.

Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Mack said the woman woke up on a couch at the driver’s apartment with the man sexually assaulting her.

Prosecutors say GPS coordinates from the victim’s phone show she was at his address.

Red-light cams fading as speed cams get green light About half of those enrolling NEWARK, N.J. – Motorists rejoicing over decisions to discontinue unpopular red-light camera programs don’t have to drive too far for a buzzkill.

The number of red-light cameras nationwide is falling because of opposition from lawmakers and average Joes – but the use of cameras to catch speeders is slowly rising, potentially signaling a new battleground.

The number of U.S. communities using red-light cameras has fallen 13 percent, to 469, since the end of 2012, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit scientific and educational group funded by the insurance industry. Meanwhile, the institute estimates 137 communities use speed cameras, up from 115 at the end of 2011.

Report: 4 million actively enroll in health plans

The first 50-state report on the latest sign-up season under President Barack Obama’s health care law shows that more than 4 million people selected plans for the first time or re-enrolled, in what the administration called “an encouraging start.”

More than 3.4 million people enrolled using HealthCare.gov as of Dec. 15, and more than 600,000 people selected plans in the state-run marketplaces, according to a Department of Health and Human Services report Tuesday. The figures

are first-timers and half are returning customers, suggesting there are about 2 million Americans new to the program.

The figures look good for the administration meeting its goal of 9.1 million customers signed up and paying premiums in 2015, independent experts said.

But they predicted the program won’t meet another target: the 13 million enrollments forecast by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office in 2015.

Canada police: 9 dead in 3 crime scenes

EDMONTON, Alberta – Nine people, including seven adults and two young children, were found dead at three separate crime scenes in what Edmonton’s police chief called the city’s worst mass murder.

Chief Rod Knecht said Tuesday the killings were the result of domestic violence. The victims included a woman found Monday night by officers responding to a weapons complaint at a south Edmonton home.

The bodies of three more women, two men, a boy and a girl were discovered a few hours later where officers had checked on reports of a depressed, suicidal male earlier in the evening.

A man matching the description of the suicidal male was found dead in a restaurant in Tuesday morning, Knecht said.

Searchers resume hunt for bodies from AirAsia

By DEWI NURCAHYANI and ROBIN McDOWELL The Associated Press PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia – A massive hunt for the 162 victims of AirAsia Flight 8501 resumed Wednesday in the Java Sea, focusing on an area of the aqua-colored waters where the first bodies and debris were located a day earlier. But wind, strong currents and high surf hampered recovery efforts as distraught family members anxiously waited to identify their loved ones.

The first proof of the jet’s fate emerged Tuesday in an area not far from where it dropped off radar screens.

Searchers found as many as six bodies and debris that included a life jacket, an emergency exit door and a suitcase about 10 miles from the plane’s last known coordinates.

The airliner’s disappearance halfway through a twohour flight between Surabaya, Indonesia, and Singapore triggered an international

search for the aircraft involving dozens of planes, ships and helicopters. It still is unclear what brought the plane down.

The plane needs to be located and its cockpit voice and flight data recorders, or black boxes, recovered before officials can start determining what caused the crash.

Images of the debris and a bloated body shown on Indonesian television sent a spasm of anguish through the room at the Surabaya airport where relatives awaited news.

The first sign of the jet turned up about 10 miles from its last known coordinates.

Parts of the interior, including the oxygen tank, were brought to the nearest town, Pangkalan Bun. Another find included a bright blue plastic suitcase, completely unscratched.

“I know the plane has crashed, but I cannot believe my brother and his family are dead,” said Ifan Joko, who lost seven family members, three of them children, as they traveled to Singapore to

First Adm. Sigit Setiayanta, commander of the Naval Aviation Center at Surabaya Air Force base, told reporters six corpses were spotted about 100 miles from Central Kalimantan province.

Rescue workers descended on ropes from a hovering helicopter to retrieve bodies. Efforts were hindered by 6-foot waves and strong winds, National Search and Rescue Director SB Supriyadi said.

The first body was picked up later by a navy ship. Officials said up to six others followed, but they disagreed about the exact number.

Supriyadi was on the aircraft and saw what appeared to be more wreckage under the water, which was clear and a relatively shallow 65 to 100 feet.

When TV broadcast an image of a half-naked man floating in the water, a shirt partially covering his head, many of the family members screamed and wailed uncontrollably.

Governor’s mansion still lacks a governor REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – Yet another Illinois governor says he won’t live in the Executive Mansion, at least for now.

First there was Rod Blagojevich, who said he couldn’t move to Springfield because he didn’t want his daughters to go to school here.

Then there was bachelor Gov. Pat Quinn, who didn’t have a family to blame. He promised to move to Springfield but never did.

And now, Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner said he can’t move into the 158-year old manor because it’s in such bad shape.

The basement floods.

The roof leaks. The whole house is in disrepair.

Rauner, who compared the building to his college frat house, said he’s still moving to Springfield despite the condition of the mansion.

But he will rent his own place until the mansion gets fixed.

And he’s seeking private funding to renovate the historical building.

Some folks don’t see the importance of a governor living in Springfield.

But imagine the outcry if George W. Bush or Barack Obama refused to live in Washington, D.C., during their presidencies.

Just as Washington is the nation’s capital, Springfield is our state’s seat of government.

Whether one chooses to live in Springfield speaks loudly to a governor’s level of engagement.

And, rightly or wrongly, Illinoisans living outside of the Chicago area have interpreted the absence of a chief executive in Springfield as a sign of contempt for downstate Illinois.

The Blagojevich family didn’t help matters any.

Who can forget first lady Patti Blagojevich’s comments at the Illinois State Fair?

After watching thousands of downstaters teeming about the fairgrounds, the first lady said the state should promote the fair more because nobody knows about it.

Ouch.

And, of course, it was Rod Blagojevich who insisted on nightly flights back to Chicago – in a state plane at taxpayer expense – at time he was warring with the legislature and calling it into daily special sessions.

It was as if he were saying he was too good to lay his head in the Capital City.

Illinois lacks the cohesive self-identity of other states such as Texas or Florida. Much of that is because of the state’s sad history of regional infighting.

The last two governors to live in Springfield – George Ryan and Jim Edgar – were downstaters themselves.

For Bruce Rauner, a Chicago-area native, to choose to live in Springfield sends a message of unity.

And that’s one thing Illinois sorely needs.

If only the state’s fiscal situation were as easy to fix as the mansion’s physical condition.

Get better handle on state finances Come Thursday, Illinois residents who pay income taxes will receive the promised reduction in the temporary 5 percent rate they have paid the past four years.

The income tax rate will decline to 3.75 percent, which will mean more money in taxpayers’ pockets, even as it means less revenue for state coffers.

Gov. Pat Quinn, who signed the temporary tax increase into law in January 2011 after its approval in a lame-duck legislative session, announced earlier this year he wanted to make the new rate permanent.

His defeat in the November election derailed those plans.

We’ve heard it described that the rate increase from 3 percent to 5 percent, effective the past four years, was equivalent to each taxpayer paying the state an extra week’s wages a year.

The reduction to 3.75 percent is akin to getting the wages of three of those days back. Another way of putting it is that a family with a $50,000 income will have an extra $625 a year in their pocket.

The state now will have less income tax revenue with

which to pay its bills – a fact Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner must factor into his budget plans.

In 2011, the temporary income tax increase was billed as a way to rescue Illinois’ finances. Its extra $7 billion shot of revenue each year was supposed to help the state pay its unpaid bills and right the financial ship. But matched against rising annual public pension payments, which reached $7.8 billion in fiscal year 2014, the “rescue” failed.

And in the wake of a judicial ruling that declared the Legislature’s December 2013 pension reform bill unconstitutional, pension payments likely will continue to increase.

To Rauner’s incoming budget director, whoever that person is, the state’s prospects might look bleak.

The authors of “Fixing Illinois” devote Chapter 2, “Fixing Past Budgeting Sins,” to this problem. Jim Nowlan and Tom Johnson point out many opportunities for the state to improve the way it manages its money, as well as how it takes in and spends money.

The authors describe how the state has had a “structural

deficit” in its budget since 2000. Borrowing and one-time revenue infusions, such as selling a state asset, helped cover the structural deficit, but those practices led to the state’s current massive indebtedness.

Nowlan and Johnson call on Illinois to simply reduce its spending increases to below the rate of inflation, and increase its revenue to above the rate of inflation.

The state historically relies on boosting revenue through tax rate increases, such as the temporary four-year income tax hike that is about to expire.

Nowlan and Johnson argue for “an appropriate revenue system” for the state. It could include broadening the revenue base through taxes set at low rates, lessening exemptions and exclusions, instituting a sales tax on services, and eliminating the 5 percent tax credit against state income taxes for real estate taxes paid (which represents half a billion dollars in lost revenue to the state).

Working with the Legislature, the incoming Rauner administration must get a better handle on the state’s financial situation and take intelligent action to improve it.

St. Charles North’s Mikey Schroeder hit his second 3-pointer midway through the first quarter Tuesday to give the Stars a 10-7 lead over the Plainfield North boys basketball team in the quarterfinals of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

Three and a half quarters of basketball remained. But Tigers coach Bob Krahulik had that uh-oh feeling.

“As soon as No 11 [Schroeder] hit his second 3 of the first couple minutes, I knew we were in trouble,” Krahulik said.

Indeed, Plainfield North never led again and, despite a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, dropped a 78-76 decision. The Tigers, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, will face Curie at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, needing a victory to earn a berth in Wednesday’s 6 p.m. fifth-place game.

“It is disappointing to lose this game,” Krahulik said. “We were expecting to be in the final four. I hope we learned that we can’t win these games based on talent alone.”

the Tigers within 16-7, but the Wolverines finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to go up, 24-9.

“We knew who we were playing,” West coach Nick DiForti said. “They are one of the best programs in the country.

I’m not happy with the score, outcome or loss, but I’m happy with the effort. We tried our best.

“We wanted to get to the rim and we did a pretty good job of that in the first half.

Our guards did a great job of spreading them out. We now just have to learn to finish in different situations.”

In the second quarter, West scored only six points but the effort on the defensive end held Simeon to only six points for the first six minutes of the quarter. A flurry the last two minutes led to a 36-15 Wolverine halftime lead.

“We played with a lot of heart,” Washington said. “We knew it was Simeon. Coach told us to go out there and play hard, make the effort and have fun.”

Washington led the Tigers with six points.

In the third quarter, that effort was there again as West held Simeon to eight points

for the first 6:30 of the quarter.

But Simeon again went on a 8-0 run to end the quarter leading 52-24.

“We got away from attacking the rim offensively in the second half,” DiForti said. “We had a tendency to just shoot the three before we tried anything and that hurt us. They have such a big front line and they really got a lot of second-chance points [24].”

Eight players scored for West as DiForti played everyone.

“Everyone gave a great effort and brought intensity,” he said, “from our starters

to everyone else who played.

We have another game tomorrow, and we must get ready to play.”

“We really looked at this game as another on our schedule,” West senior Mike Ruwoldt said. “If we can give this type of effort in every game we play, it will be tough to beat us. We won’t back down to anyone.”

The Tigers only shot 23 percent from the field and were 2 of 27 from the 3-point line.

West did hold Simeon to 40 percent from the field. Simeon outrebounded the Tigers, 58-26.

Warriors use 24-0 beginning to win consolation title

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – Even Brian Flaherty didn’t expect what happened when his Lincoln-Way West boys basketball team took on Oswego East on Tuesday afternoon.

A 24-0 lead before the first quarter expired?

“I’ve seen and been on the other end of those,” Flaherty said in the wake of the Warriors’ 61-34 rout of Oswego East. “The boys were sharp in their defensive intensity and focus. It would be nice if we could bottle this.”

The victory earned the Warriors the consolation title in the Romeoville Christmas Classic, and their 10th win of the season, against only a setback administered by the host Spartans on the opening night of the four-session tournament.

It will not be their last if they continue how they go after the ball on defense, and how they shoot.

Half the equation was there last year, said sophomore Marco Pettinato.

“Last year, we hung our hats on our offense,” Pettinato said. “But there were games

last year where we shot 18 of 24 and lost. Now we’re playing more focused, more defensive-oriented.”

Flaherty, whose previous stint as a coach was at Bremen, has turned the Warriors around in a flash. West was 12-14 last season under Jon White, the program’s first year with double-digit victories.

But 10-1 is a whole new realm, and players such as Pettinato – who led all hands with 15 points, and Jon Marotta, the junior who scored 14 – are the reason why.

“I knew about Marco and Jon, but there are other piec-

es here,” Flaherty said. “They haven’t cheated me in terms of effort.”

Those include Trace Howard, for instance, who pulled down six rebounds. Anthony Marotta, Jon’s older brother, came off the bench to score nine points. On this occasion, every Warrior stood tall, and played smart.

“Last year, we were losing games like this,” Pettinato said. “We had good leads against Lincoln-Way Central and Bradley and lost them. Going ahead, 24-0, doesn’t mean we won. Tonight, we kept our foot on the gas.”

Collecting any title at Christmas – as the Warriors did with consecutive wins over Chicago Christian, Joliet Catholic and Oswego East – is fun. Now comes the heavy lifting, the plunge back into conference play.

“We think we can play with every team that’s on our schedule,” Pettinato said.

“We believe in each other. We think we can get some momentum into the regional and try to make some noise in the playoffs.”

PONTIAC – Lockport boys basketball coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. said he went into the locker room at halftime feeling as if things were worse than they were.

“This was a slow build,” he said. “It felt like it was more than 13-3.”

That’s right, the Porters trailed Peoria Manual, 13-3, at halftime Tuesday in their consolation bracket matchup at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

Manual broke it open in the third quarter, scoring the first seven points en route to a 39-21 victory, ousting Lockport from the tournament.

“Peoria Manual’s overall quickness and their team speed are outstanding,” Thompson said. “We probably rushed a few things early, when we had an opportunity to stay in it.

“Then we got a little antsy defensively. The offensive frustration wore on us defensively.”

Manual sophomore Da’Monte Williams, son of Manual legend Frankie Williams, had an immediate steal to open the second half and converted it into a flying dunk.

Hollatz’s bucket came when Lockport was 1 for 19 from the floor. The Porters finished 7 of 36 for 19.2 percent.

“Offensively, we have to do a better job staying positive,” Thompson said. “We can’t back down from quickness.

“We had some turnovers against their half-court trap in the first half, but we gave ourselves some more opportunities to score in the second half. We got some ball reversal going. Ralph [Blakney] and Deiondre [Taylor] did a better job establishing themselves around the bucket.”

Blakney finished with eight points and Anthony Grybauskas with five for the Porters.

Taylor had five rebounds.

Romeoville bounces back to finish third

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – After losing a close semifinal game, some teams might have lost motivation to fight for a thirdplace title.

That was not the case Tuesday for Romeoville’s boys basketball team, however, as the Spartans beat Reavis, 51-38, to take third at the Romeoville Christmas Classic.

Even though the game ended with Romeoville dominating offensively and defensively, the Spartans had a slow start. At the end of the first quarter, it only led, 9-7.

“First, we just started off kind of sluggish,” freshman guard London Stamps said.

“Coming off from a loss, we’ve just got to pick it up, be intense on defense and play with each other. You play with each other, you do very well.”

It was evident that the 5752 loss to Oak Forest the night before had an early effect on Romeoville’s performance, but Stamps’ 10 first-half points helped the Spartans (5-6, 1-2) pick up momentum.

By the end of two quarters, Romeoville increased its lead to 21-14. To coach Marc Howard, however, the team was still not playing to its potential.

“At halftime, we had to have a moment to come together and be really realistic if everyone was giving that effort on the defensive side of the ball,” Howard said. “We talked about how we wanted to

finish this tournament. Did we want to finish with a ‘W’ or did we want to go into the second half of conference play with a snag?”

The pep talk did the trick.

(12 points) opened up the second half with a layup. The Rams scored again with less than six minutes to go in the third, making the score 25-18.

But a tough Spartans defense held Reavis scoreless for the

rest of the quarter, and Romeoville went on a 16-0 streak.

Stamps ended the night with two steals and a 14 points before fouling out late in the game. Across the board, the Spartans had a strong showing.

Junior guard Matt Cappelletti contributed 10 points, a steal and an assist; senior forward Charles Hunter added eight points; senior center Jason Sims posted a team-high five rebounds; and senior guard Dwayne Griffin had two steals late in the game.

At the end of their home tournament, the Spartans had a successful 3-1 showing, and Stamps and Cappelletti were named to the all-tournament team. Things are looking up.

“We didn’t come out as strong as we knew we could,” Cappelletti said. “At halftime, he [coach Howard] gave us a little pep talk, and we came out like we’ve been coming out this whole tournament and we did really good.

“A lot of players stepped up on our team like Dwayne and London. They’ve been putting the ball in the basket.

We got some key players back, and they’ve been doing really good in the middle. I think that we’re just going to keep going from here on out and get better and better.”

Minooka’s potential game-winner bounces away

By DRAKE SKLEBA Shaw Media Correspondent ELMHURST – With 11.6 seconds left in regulation, the young Minooka Indians trailed Conant, 37-35, in the Tosh Holiday Classic consolation-bracket semifinal Tuesday.

At the line was Cougars 6-foot-5 senior Danny Sotos (15 points). Sotos had hit the first of a one-and-one but missed the second shot. Indians junior Nick Clemmons rebounded Sotos’ miss and raced upcourt.

As the game clock ticked toward zero, Clemmons (three

points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots) found fellow Larry Roberts (16 points, three 3-pointers) open on the right side. Roberts squared up and launched a 20-footer that initially looked as if it would be a game-winner. However, the ball hit the rim and went out of bounds.

Game over. Conant 37, Minooka 35.

“My teammates gave me an open look, and it just wouldn’t fall for me,” Roberts said.

“Sometimes they go in, and sometimes they don’t.”

Roberts scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the

first half, giving the Indians a 22-15 lead. Sotos scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half for Conant (7-7).

“I had a solid first half shooting the ball, and I owe it all to my teammates for getting me the open looks,” Roberts added. “I am real happy with the way we have played thus far and am looking forward to the second half of the season.”

Sophomore Jimmy Sotos (six points) gave Conant a 27-26 lead with a minute left in the third quarter. Indians junior Joe Butler (six points) quickly regained the lead for Minooka

when he streaked downcourt for a coast-to-coast layup.

With 4:53 left, Roberts’ third 3-pointer gave the Indians their last lead at 33-30.

Kyle Bradley scored his only four points to give the Cougars a 34-33 lead. Chris Dolce nailed a clutch pair of free throws to increase the Cougars’ lead to 36-33 with 2:35 left. Minooka sophomore Jon Butler (eight points) hit two free throws to make it 36-35.

With the heart-breaking defeat, the Indians, who start four juniors and a sophomore, bowed out of the Tosh Classic with a 2-2 record and conclude

the 2014 portion of their season with a 7-6 mark.

“We are very young, and I am proud of the way we, without a timeout, were able to get Larry (Roberts) an open look at the basket for his potential game-winner,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said.

“Sometimes they go in, and sometimes they don’t.

“I am very happy with the way we played in the first half of the season and in this tournament. We’re going to take a couple of well-deserved days off and then get back to work in the Southwest Prairie race.”

Our main goal is to prepare for the state tournament, and I feel that we have a good group of guys who are focused on that.”

“I don’t try to think of only wrestling to win, but I want to wrestle to dominate. I watch a lot of film on myself so that I can find my mistakes and improve on them. In our room, it’s a real positive attitude, and every day we try to push each other. Our coaches tell us that the hard work will pay off in the end.”

Lincoln-Way West had eight placers to help it finish fourth with 149 points, while Plainfield East had six placewinners as it claimed sixth place with 136.5 points.

The Warriors also received a third from Noah Keefe (132); a fourth from Gabe Montalvo (160); sixths from Tom Buell

(113), Kyle Ruettiger (138) and Grahm McClure (145); and eighth-place efforts from Joey Schloegel (120) and Andrew Hogeveen (152).

The Bengals got thirds from Omar Salazar (152) and Jake Mayon (182), while Jacob Hughes (220) was fourth and Tyler Krause (113) placed eighth.

Joliet West was paced by Darvell Flagg (106), who took third. The Tigers got a fourth from Austin Poch (113), while Meekah Ben-Israel (182) was sixth and Roman Johnson (132) placed eighth. Flagg lost 4-2 to Hartman in the semifinals.

Lincoln-Way East received a fifth from Jason Stokes (126), while Jake Dibenedetto (120) finished seventh. Stokes fell 3-2 to Khamis in the semifinals.

PALATINE – Zach Krause was dejected after getting to compete only in one match at last year’s IHSA Class 3A state wrestling finals in Champaign.

Motivated by that disappointing showing, the Plainfield East junior has worked extra hard since last February in hopes he will accomplish much more this season.

So far, things have gone well for Krause, who owns a 16-1 record after defeating Lincoln-Way West’s Amier Khamis, 4-1, in the 126-pound championship match Tuesday at Palatine’s Berman Holiday Classic.

In Tuesday’s finals, Krause recorded a first-period takedown against Khamis (18-4), who used a third-period escape to close to within 2-1 before Krause got a late takedown.

“I came into the tournament off of my first loss of the season, and that kind of had me down,” Krause said. “I lost to a good kid (Oak Forest’s Danny Swan), and learning from that loss really helped me. It wasn’t my best day, and I didn’t push through it like I know that I can. I knew that I had to had cut weight and put the work in in practice all week.

“Last year at state, I came up short and didn’t wrestle my best. I watched kids who I beat get on the awards stand, and that really lit a fire inside me. Over the summer, I got a lot of time on the mat and I went to Fargo (summer wrestling competitions) and was an All-American. Coming into this season, I feel a lot better than last year. I’m more experienced and ready to take the next step.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Notre Dame and senior kicker Kyle Brindza finished the season off with some much-needed redemption.

Brindza made a 32-yard field goal as time expired, and Notre Dame upset No. 22 LSU, 31-28, in a Music City Bowl shootout Tuesday.

The Tigers were unsuccessful on a fake field goal at the end of the first half, a call that stood on review even though replays appeared to show the ball crossing the goal line. The Fighting Irish (8-5) also blocked a 40-yard field goal attempt by Trent Domingue early in the fourth quarter.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – By the time Jim Harbaugh walked onto the court at halftime of the Michigan basketball game, his homecoming had turned into a full-fledged pep rally.

“I pledge to you that we will do our very best to carry on the great tradition of Michigan – excellence all across the board,” the Wolverines’ new football coach said to the cheering crowd at Crisler Center during Tuesday’s matinee win against Illinois – in an overtime thriller, naturally.

“You know how to make a guy feel at home,” Harbaugh yelled, his voice sounding hoarse from a whirlwind few days.

Harbaugh’s return is none too soon for fans desperate for him to save the football program where he starred as a quarterback 30 years ago – one that has fallen into the middle of the pack at best in the Big Ten Conference and become an afterthought in the national landscape.

He is remembered for delivering a victory he guaranteed over Ohio State in 1986, the same season he was Big Ten player of the year and finished third in Heisman Trophy voting.

Rookies lift Michigan over Illini

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Heading into Tuesday afternoon’s Big Ten opener against Illinois, Michigan was relying on the upperclassmen trio of Caris LeVert, Zak Irvin and Derrick Walton, Jr. for nearly 60 percent of the team’s scoring output.

John Beilein, stuck between riding his proven playmakers and needing some youngsters to develop, has patiently waited to see which of the five rookies receiving playing time would step up at a critical juncture.

It happened in the Big 10 opener against the Illini. The Wolverines erased a 13-point deficit midway through the second half and watched Aubrey Dawkins and Ricky Doyle lead the way to a 73-65 overtime victory.

LeVert turned in his usual solid effort with 17 points, and Irvin, who finished with 13 points, nailed a dagger of a 3-pointer with three minutes to play in overtime and the Wolverines (8-5, 1-0 Big Ten) never gave up the lead again.

Malcolm Hill scored 19 as the only player to finish in double digits for Illinois (10-4, 0-1).

Northwestern escapes Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – In the midst of a potentially disastrous scoring drought, the Northwestern players did not think about how bad their offense was performing but of how good their defense was.

Despite going 10:16 without a point late in the game, the Wildcats survived as Bryant McIntosh scored 17 points and hit the game-sealing free throws for a 51-47 win Tuesday over Rutgers.

Tre Demps added 16 points and seven rebounds for Northwestern (10-4, 1-0 Big Ten), which won its fourth straight despite scoring just seven points in the final 10:45.

Myles Mack had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Scarlet Knights (8-6, 0-1), playing their inaugural game as a member of the Big Ten.

Nets end Bulls’ streak at seven

CHICAGO – Brook Lopez had a season-high 29 points, Joe Johnson had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds and the Brooklyn Nets posted a 96-82 win Tuesday to snap the Bulls’ seven-game winning streak.

Lopez, playing in just his fifth game since returning from a lower back strain, started in place of Kevin Garnett and was 13 for 21 from the field. Johnson was 8 for 14 from the field.

Mike Dunleavy led the Bulls (22-10) with 23 points on 9-for15 shooting, including 5 for 9 on 3-pointers. Jimmy Butler, who averaged 26.4 points during the winning streak, had just eight points.

Derrick Rose had just four.

Brooklyn (15-16) had just one previous win this season against a team with a winning record.

ot everything for New Year’s Eve needs to be fussy, bubbly or frilly.

It’s OK to ring in 2015 with something richer, smokier and deliciously darker.

So we started with a stiff pour of Scotch whisky. To dress it up for the occasion – it is a celebration, after all – we spiked it with ice cider, apple brandy and a splash of lemon juice. The result is a bold, lightly sweet indulgence that is just right to set a festive mood.

To go with it, we slowly candied some bacon. This is bacon so good it will haunt you. The process is slow, but effortless.

The bacon also can be made ahead of time and kept at room temperature for three days (you are essentially making bacon jerky, so it won’t spoil). Just be sure to get thick-cut bacon. You want meaty and bold for this.

Start to finish: 2 hours 15 minutes (15 minutes active) Servings: 10 1¼ cups packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon ground mace 20 ounces thick-cut bacon

Winter Orchard Scotch

Heat the oven to 250 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, red pepper flakes and mace. Arrange the bacon in a single layer in the prepared baking sheet.

The bacon can touch, but should not overlap. Spread the brown sugar mixture evenly over the bacon, covering all the slices. Bake for 2 hours.

Allow the bacon to rest for 10 minutes in the pan before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling. Store in an airtight container between sheets of kitchen parchment or waxed paper.

By ELIZABETH KARMEL The Associated Press I’m a firm believer that almost any party – not to mention almost any brunch – can be improved by serving sparkling wine.

That’s why when I started planning this year’s New Year’s Day brunch, I didn’t start my planning with the food; I started with a signature drink. My

friends and I usually don’t go crazy on New Year’s Eve, so by the next morning we’re still happy to have a little libation. A refreshing and light cocktail seemed about right.

I started thinking about iconic cocktails and settled on the Bellini. It’s a simple drink created in Italy using white peaches, prosecco and (sometimes) a little cherry juice. But

I decided to remake this classic summer cocktail with a winter fruit.

I wanted a fruit that was harvested in sunny Florida in December.

I settled on passion fruit because similar to white peaches it is both delicate and intensely aromatic.

While you could make this drink in January with peach nectar or frozen

peaches, passion fruit pulp is an unexpected and delightful change.

Passion fruit pulp can be found in the frozen foods section, often with the Goya brand products. And in keeping with the Italian tradition of a little cherry juice, I decided to try the Italian (Luxardo) maraschino liqueur. I loved it. It was a little less sweet than other cherry liqueurs and set

off the tartness of the passion fruit perfectly.

Passion Fruit Bellini Start to finish: 5 minutes Servings: 4

1 cup unsweetened passion fruit pulp, thawed 2 tablespoons maraschino liqueur Ice 750-mililiter bottle prosecco, chilled

Maraschino cherries or fresh raspberries, to garnish In a large cocktail shaker, combine the passion fruit pulp and maraschino liqueur. Stir to combine. Add a handful of ice, then shake vigorously for 20 seconds.

Strain into the wine glasses, dividing it evenly. Stir each glass gently, then top each with Prosecco. Add a cherry or raspberry to each glass. Serve immediately.

For the last two days, declarer has struggled in a 4-3 fit. Today he has nine trumps, but the original declarer did not foresee the danger and went down in his game contract.

Against four spades, West led a top-of-nothing heart nine. East won with his ace and shifted to the diamond seven. How should South have continued?

After East overcalled one heart, South’s one-spade response guaranteed at least a five-card suit. (With only four spades, he would have made a negative double.) West raised hearts with three-card support and a singleton. East competed to three hearts, the nine-trick level, because he knew that his side had nine hearts between them. But South’s jump to four spades silenced everyone.

Note West’s lead. Since he had raised hearts, he led his highest. If he had passed throughout, he would have led his lowest. (Yes, all right, if he were psychic, he would have led a diamond, which would have defeated the contract with subsequent accurate defense.)

South won the second trick in the dummy and called for a trump, but East dashed up with his ace and shifted to the club nine. West won with his ace and gave his partner a diamond ruff for down one.

How could declarer have avoided this outcome?

He had to win trick two on the board, cash the heart queen and continue with the heart 10, discarding both of his clubs. Then West could not have gained the lead to give East the critical ruff. Declarer would have lost only one spade and two hearts with a textbook scissors coup.

Consider the next stage in your child’s development. For example, don’t wait until puberty to talk with your child about body changes or menstruation.

Here is a list of topics my pediatrician colleagues recommend that you should discuss with your child: (1) PUBERTY. Discuss the body changes your child should expect.

Parents of both girls and boys should discuss menstruation.

(2) HUMAN REPRODUCTION. Discuss the body parts related to sexuality, including their actual names and functions. Discuss sexual intercourse, how babies are made and how babies are born.

(3) MASTURBATION. Teach your child that masturbation and self-exploration are normal parts of sexual development.

(4) BIRTH CONTROL. Discuss the purpose of birth control. Explain the basic types and how each prevents pregnancy. If you do not believe in birth control, say that, too.

(5) SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES. Teach your child how these diseases are spread and can be prevented.

(6) HOMOSEXUALITY. Teach your child about different sexual orientations.

A series of matterof-fact discussions with your kids can give them the information they need -- and also arm them against the misinformation they likely will hear from others.

Dear Readers: Many parents are uncomfortable talking about sex with their kids, but they know the day will, and should, come. They often anxiously prepare in advance what they will say if their child asks a question about sex.

There’s an old joke about a young boy who asks his father, “Where did I come from?” His father says to himself, “OK, the time is here,” braces himself, and then spends several minutes talking about sperm, eggs, the uterus, labor and delivery, etc. The boy, with a puzzled look on his face, replies, “Funny. Johnny says he comes from San Francisco.”

Although you may not realize it, you have been teaching your child about sexuality for years.

For example, you helped him learn the correct terms for the parts of the body, including genitalia.

My pediatrician colleagues at Harvard Medical School advise that parents should discuss sex with their child before he or she enters puberty, typically by age 8 or 9. When and where do you start? Often you do not have to start. Like the boy in the joke, your child will most likely come to you with questions first. Answer them at your child’s level, with short, clear explanations.

If your child does not come to you with questions, you may need to bring up the subject. You could start by asking how much he knows about something and see where the conversation goes. For example, “What do you know about how babies are made?”

Once you have opened the conversation, it will get easier. Over time, you’ll want to cover a lot of ground. Do it little by little. Don’t overwhelm your child with too many facts all at once.

Currently, 21 states plus the District of Columbia have laws that protect gay people from employment discrimination. Wisconsin is one of them.

The attorney said that “outing” the candidate to the other employee was “not necessarily illegal,” but that it was “DEFINITELY a bad business practice.”

In the 21 states that offer protection for gay people, a prospective employer cannot base a hiring decision on how comfortable someone is with the candidate’s sexual orientation, or the perception that a co-worker or customer might be uncomfortable with a gay person. That is discrimination, and it IS illegal.
