By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Councilwoman Jan Quillman, calling the city’s budget situation “dire,” on Tuesday changed a vote she made Nov. 17 and put a $964,000 project on hold.

The 2016 budget proposal includes property tax increases, tight controls on capital spending and even closes a fire station, leaving Quillman and others looking for alternatives.

As the council prepared Tuesday for the usually routine vote of approving minutes from past meetings, Quillman said she wanted to change a vote “after hearing last night’s budget.”

The 2016 budget was presented to the council Monday.

Quillman on Nov. 17 was part of a 5-3 majority that approved upgraded technology for a Work Order Management System that will cost $964,000 to implement.

Her change to a no vote Tuesday put the tally at 4-4.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, who announced

when he took office that he will vote only to break ties, broke this one by voting against the $964,000 expenditure.

O’Dekirk said the council will consider the Work Order Management System again after taking a closer look at the budget.

“I apologize for it happening this way, because I don’t want to be jerking staff around, which is kind of what happened here,” O’Dekirk said.

O’Dekirk and some council members already have said they are against a 5 percent increase in the city property tax included in the budget, which would amount to about $30 more in city taxes on a $150,000 home.

City staff said the Work Order Management System is needed to replace an outdated system and improve management and monitoring of work orders such as water main repairs and pothole problems.

Opponents Nov. 17 said the expenditure was too much without yet having seen the proposed budget for next year.

Quillman, after seeing the budget, decided

they were right.

City Manager Jim Hock said he had not yet signed a contract for the new system, but said he was concerned about what such vote reversals could do in the future.

“I do have a concern in establishing a precedent,” Hock said, noting that the city could be in legal trouble if the council reversed a vote after a contract had been signed.

Quillman made a comment about the “last-minute” nature of the budget, which Hock had put on hold for a couple of weeks while saying he wanted to see how the state budget crisis played out.

“Maybe it is a precedent,” Quillman said, “but we haven’t been in such dire straits as we are right now.”

O’Dekirk and Councilman John Gerl, who had voted against the Work Order Management System on Nov. 17, defended Quillman’s decision to change her vote.

“Motions to reconsider are not that uncommon. They do happen,” Gerl said.

“New facts do come to light, and at times elected officials exercise that option.”

Joliet plans to lay off lawyers while paying more for city legal services

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet would pay more for legal services while contracting out work now done by three staff lawyers, but the city expects to get the money back on better lawsuit settlements, according to the 2016 budget proposal.

The city also would hire an inspector general in the Legal Department with money saved by eliminating three staff lawyers, City Manager Jim Hock said.

The three jobs that would be cut in the Legal Department are the only layoffs in the proposed 2016 budget, Hock said.

“With all three positions, there will be money for the inspector general and contracting out,” he said.

The total budget for the Legal Department is expected to drop in 2016.

But the city would pay $118,000 more for legal services next year, according to the budget. The additional costs include a $120,000 salary for an inspector general, a new position that

would be created at the urging of Mayor Bob O’Dekirk.

The cost of salaries and pension contributions would drop from $697,000 this year to $465,000 in 2016. But the budget proposes paying $350,000 for outside law firms next year.

The city allocated no money for outside law firms in the 2015 budget. Joliet does use an outside firm for the Evergreen Terrace case. But those costs in both 2015 and 2016 are put in a separate budget for Evergreen Terrace.

The proposed Legal Department budget of nearly $1.8 million in 2016 would be a $471,000 drop compared with 2015. That is based on the expectation that legal claims will fall from the $1.35 million this year to $750,000 in 2016.

“We think that we’ll have better representation in the courts and have some positive outcomes in the courts,” Hock said. “Looking at the settlements and the outcomes we’ve had in the last couple of years, I think we can do better.”

O’Dekirk said he believes the city will save money us-

ing outside lawyers because it won’t pay for health insurance, pension and other benefits.

“Those are ongoing costs we pay that are going off the board,” he said.

He also said outside attorneys will bring specialized expertise in personal injury cases, labor contracts and civil rights cases now handled by staff.

The only staff lawyer staying would be City Attorney Marty Shanahan, who was hired last year and would be paid $141,000.

Leaving would be Mary Kucharz, John Wise and Gregory Smith, all longtime city employees. Hock said Smith already had plans to leave for another position.

Joliet staff attorneys represent the city in court in state and federal cases. They also prosecute traffic tickets and ordinance violations in Will County Circuit Court. A staff attorney also represents the city in liquor commission cases.

The proposed budget for the Legal Department includes two other positions: a paralegal paid $67,000 and a legal secretary paid $61,000.

JOLIET – A recently released FBI report shows that Joliet’s five-year trend for violent and property crimes is improving, but the city’s police chief said he is concerned about a spike in 2015 for burglaries, shootings and other crimes.

Crime in the city was down overall in 2014 compared with 2010, but Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton’s officers have responded to nine homicides so far in 2015 compared with eight in 2014.

Police reported 11 in 2010. While preliminary, department-compiled data suggest that shooting-related incidents are up about 6 percent from 2014 to 2015.

Benton stressed the year-to-date data are “raw” and “very preliminary,” noting how crimes are sometimes recategorized at a later date upon further investigation.

“The majority is gang-related,” Benton said. “We’ve had some conflict issues going on that have festered throughout the year. So we’re looking at a number of issues as to why we’ve had this ongoing violence this year.”

There is some good news, however, according to the FBI report: Violent crime in Joliet is down over a five-year period from 2010 to 2014. With a population of about 148,000, Joliet reported 495 violent crimes in 2014, compared with 543 violent crimes in 2010.

Over that same period, property crime has dropped drastically, from 4,190 to 2,988. Robberies declined from 126 to 115, assault dropped from 375 to 348, and larceny theft declined 3,058 to 2,231. Car theft also was down, from 175 to 115, over that period.

Violent crimes, according to the FBI report, include murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Burglary, larceny theft, motor vehicle theft and arson are

categorized as property crimes.

Slowdown in recovered guns

The cause in violent crime so far in 2015 is disconcerting, Benton said.

He noted how FBI Director James Comey made headlines in October for suggesting recent anti-police sentiment – fueled by multiple instances of white officers’ killings of black men in cities across the U.S. – could be causing the upticks in crime.

Last week, Benton said that although that’s one theory, there’s “no measurable method” to determine whether that’s happening in Joliet.

But Benton did say it is important to note that the number of recovered guns this year is down, yet shootings and other violent crime are on the rise. The number of recovered guns has dropped from 253 in 2010 to a projected 193 for all of 2015.

School D-86 to create more student leaders

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board of School Inspectors learned of a new initiative to have students play a more active role in leading their schools and working with district staff.

At Wednesday’s board meeting, administrators reported on their work that’s part of a new three-year strategic plan to make districtwide improvements.

Board inspectors unanimously adopted the plan at a July 8 meeting, following the completion of a previous three-year strategic plan.

The strategic plan covers student achievement, student services, technology, human resources and involvement from parents and the community.

One initiative proposed under student services was bridging the gap between student leaders in each junior high school and the district.

Tanisha Cannon, assistant superintendent for student services, said district staff plan to identify six students at each junior high school and provide them leadership opportunities by working with staff on issues that affect them.

She said they would be part of a student district council rather than the student councils at each academic building.

“They have no idea what we do and who we are and what each person’s responsibility is. We want to build our students’ leadership skills and have them become a liaison between the school and district,” Cannon said.

The schools would identi-

fy students to be part of the student district council, and they would consist of a diverse group in terms of their culture and grade level, she said.

Some of what those students would talk about with district staff includes their perception of safety of their schools, learning opportunities, social activities, food and their knowledge of school government, she said.

“I love the idea, especially since we don’t know what’s going on but the kids do,” said Christine Kim, board inspector. “It’s their school that they’re there every day. It would be great if we could meet with them or hear more about what discussions or information they brought forward.”

Cannon said the student leadership opportunities builds from district staff wanting to gather more student input on issues at schools. She said district staff want a deeper look in student perception through surveys on the perception of the climate and safety of the schools.

The information from the survey can be used to see whether there is a communication gap between students and staff or if there is something the district needs to improve, she said.

“I think what’s important, though, is that we seriously listen to [the students],” said Deborah Ziech, board inspector, “… Yes, it’s important to gather information, but we need to let them know that we’re actually listening to them and that whatever we can do to act on their concerns, that we will do that.”

Plainfield funeral home honors past year’s deceased with luminaria

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Families of late loved ones appreciated the opportunity Wednesday evening to light candles and honor them at Overman-Jones Funeral Home.

A line of bagged candles named for each person whose funeral was conducted at Overman-Jones in the past year bordered the landscape in front of the main entrance to the funeral home.

The lights were a part of the 16th annual Memorial Luminary Program at Overman-Jones. The program is meant to be a comfortable space for families to share memories, grieve, remember and shed tears if needed.

The funeral home, at 15219 S. Joliet Road in Plainfield, has conducted the luminaria event outside every year, except for one year when it rained and the bagged lights needed to be brought inside.

“The folks do like the opportunity to remember their loved ones,” said Stephanie Jones-Kastelic, a co-owner of the funeral home.

More than 180 people’s lives were honored during the ceremony. They comprised those

Families were allowed to participate as much or as little as they wanted. Some didn’t attend, and others lit the bag and left, while others used the reception inside the funeral home as a way to cope with their loss.

Some families decorated the bags with pictures, prayers and messages. And veterans were honored with a U.S. flag image on their bag.

Georgia Lockwood came for her 85-year-old sister, Gladys Lockwood Obermayer, who died in August.

“It’s very tough,” Lockwood said. “It’s nice that they honor those that have passed.”

To honor his mother, Gail, Plainfield resident Jason Hamilton brought along his three sisters, father and all of Gail’s

grandchildren.

Naperville resident Sherry Iacullo lost her mother, Elizabeth Rossobillo, on Sept. 23.

“This is something good they did, having a memorial for everyone,” Iacullo said.

Along with the luminaria, the Rev. John Regan read from Scripture and led prayers for the deceased at a 6 p.m. service.

“The luminary reminds us just how connected we remain to them,” Regan told the nearly 60 people in attendance.

He also mentioned how memories of the deceased stay with their families but that time helps heal the pain of separation.

A U.S. flag was folded, taps was played for veterans, and four candles were lit symbolizing grief, courage, memories and love.

The ceremony comes in the midst of the holiday season, an important time, Jones-Kastelic said.

“Traditions are broken with the loss of a loved one,” Jones-Kastelic said, adding that the luminaria helps families cope. “They have to contemplate an empty seat at the table. It’s a nostalgic period, especially reflective when the family can’t be together.”

Will County forest district panel OKs ash tree removal contract lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Pending the Forest Preserve District of Will County board’s approval, Lockport-based Homer Tree Care Inc. will remove emerald ash borer-infested trees in 2016 for the district, under a contract greenlighted Wednesday by the district’s operations committee.

Thousands of ash trees within Will County forest preserves will be cut down in 2016 – one year after the threat of infestation from the emerald ash borer beetle reached its peak in the region.

Homer Tree Care Inc. came in with the lowest of three bids at $212,750, according to district documents.

Finance Committee Chairman Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, said the district likely will contract for emerald ash borer removal until 2017, or un-

til staff can effectively put the infestation to rest.

Tree mortality is expected to decline gradually over the next five years, with beetle infestation shifting southwest from southern Cook County. About 3,800 trees were removed this year across the district’s various preserves, compared with 2,207 in 2014 and 750 in 2013.

The operations committee also approved a $49,029 contract for tree and brush maintenance services. The lowest bid came from Trees “R” Us Inc., based in Wauconda.

The filling of two nonunion positions also was up for discussion Wednesday.

One was a replacement hire for a communications and creative services manager, vacated in August. The other was a replacement hire for a community partnerships and outreach manager, a position held

“We want to make sure we spend taxpayers’ dollars wisely,” Tuminello said.

Neither position was scheduled for elimination as a result of the district’s early retirement incentives program, according to a district memo.

Uptick in burglaries in 2015

The Joliet Police Department has recorded 702 preliminary reports of burglaries in 2015 so far, compared with the 523 reported as of this time in 2014. Many of the burglaries have occurred in the city’s East and Central districts, Benton said.

Betsy Satcher, president of the Eastside Neighborhood Council, wants the crime-riddled communities to build relationships with police officers and other neighborhoods in an effort to reduce crime rates. Vacant, foreclosed homes attract crime and vandalism, she said.

“We’re talking about places that have been empty for a while,” Satcher said. “We are concerned because we have kids that walk back and forth to

school, and [the vacant homes] are eyesores in the community.”

Benton said the number of copper thefts in the East and Central districts is on the rise – a trend that may be tied to the number of vacant foreclosed homes.

Burglaries are growing in the Eastside Neighborhood Council’s area of

the city – which is bordered by railroad tracks to the west, Jefferson Street to the north, Briggs Street to the east, and Interstate 80 to the south.

Just six people attended the last ESNC meeting Nov. 10. Satcher wants more to come.

“We want to bring about better relationships between neighbors, neigh-

borhoods, city government, schools, churches, businesses,” Satcher said.

“Right now, we are trying to target suspects and target patterns. But that doesn’t stop the underlying problem of what’s causing the burglaries. Quite often, burglaries are fueled by drug addiction and demand for money to sustain that habit.”

Defendant may seek blood test in ’14 Romeoville murder case

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Romeoville man representing himself on murder charges may seek to have blood evidence tested.

Mark Ballard, 43, and his son, Adam, 16, are accused of killing Richard Pollack, 55, with a baseball bat during a street brawl Aug. 10, 2014, in the 400 block of Tallman Avenue in Romeoville. Although defense attorney Paul Napolski still represents Adam Ballard, Mark Ballard told Judge Daniel Rozak in September he would exercise his constitutional right to represent himself.

“I might be filing a motion for some additional ... testing on some blood splatter

to see whose blood splatter it is,” Mark Ballard told Rozak on Wednesday. “I was on the ground being beat by ...”

Ballard continued until the judge cut him off.

“It’s not a good idea to go into the facts [at this point],” Rozak told him.

Mark Ballard also asked Rozak to allow his wife to buy headphones he can use to review evidence. Inmates in the Will County jail typically are prohibited from possessing audio headsets.

“At the jail, Mr. Ballard is only able to review the DVDs in an open ... day room [without any privacy]. There are a lot of DVDs, some of which last several hours and have poor audio quality,” Napolski told the court on Ballard’s behalf.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Two crashes involving semitrailers caused major headaches Wednesday in Elwood.

The first incident occurred at 7:50 a.m. when a loaded container truck rolled over on Elwood International Port Road while attempting to make a left turn onto Arsenal Road, Police Chief Fred Hayes said.

“The driver was driving too fast. The vehicle rolled over and completely crushed the cab, but he was able to get out and decline medical treatment,” Hayes said.

Hayes said the crash ripped the cab’s fuel tank and spilled about 200 gallons of diesel fuel. Elwood and Stepan Company firefighters set up temporary barriers to keep the fuel from entering the nearby wetlands.

“The EMA and EPA were notified, and there’s going to be some extensive cleanup needed,” Hayes said. “They

may have to dig out some of the soil to protect that wetland area.”

Miguel Rangel, 24, of Aurora was ticketed for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for unsafe equipment because the axles on the trailer were not properly distributed for the container it carried, according to Hayes.

“This accident occurred on Rangel’s first day as a driver for CSG Logistics,” Hayes said.

Then, at 12:38 p.m., a red Ford Focus heading west on Mississippi Avenue tried to cross Route 53 but pulled out into the path of a southbound semi, Hayes said.

“The 1996 Mack truck went off the road, crashed into a metal light pole and partly rolled over into a ditch, but the driver was not injured,” Hayes said.

Police arrived and reportedly found Joseph R. Cantrell, 25, of Onarga – who identified himself as the Focus’ driver and apologized for causing

the crash – outside the sedan, police said.

“There was some video from a nearby business, and we initially believed a passenger who fled the scene was driving, but our investigation confirmed the driver stayed with the vehicle while the passenger ran home,” Hayes said Wednesday night.

The passenger, a 29-yearold Elwood man, later went on his own to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where Cantrell was taken. Both men were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Hayes said.

Cantrell was cited with failure to yield in the crash.

The passenger does not face charges for running away.

“Our detective spoke with the two men and family members,” Hayes said. “At first we were suspicious [of his actions], but it turns out the passenger was once involved in another serious crash with a semi truck and is still traumatized, so he just felt he had to get away from there.”

JOLIET – An Olympia Fields woman is facing trial this week in connection with a 2013 crash in Lockport that killed a woman with a developmental disability.

Jurors will decide whether Marissa C. Martin, 20, failed to report the incident in a timely manner and was driving under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash.

About 4:45 a.m. Oct. 27, 2013, Tina Douglas, 48, was reported missing from a group home for adults with developmental disabilities operated by Trinity Services in the 2000 block of State Street in Lockport. About 15 minutes later, Martin was driving her black Dodge Charger north in the 1800 block of State Street when the collision occurred, police said.

Lockport police Officer Preston Frye testified Wednesday he had been taking evidence photos at the crash scene about 7:30 a.m. when he was informed Martin and her father had come into the police station. Frye told the jury and Judge Daniel Rippy that Martin’s Charger was in the parking lot with scuff marks and

dents on the front passenger side and that a headlight had been knocked in.

Frye said Martin initially told him she “saw something in the road [but was] not sure if it was an animal or person.”

“It was wobbling in the roadway in the dark and she attempted to swerve but did strike it. She didn’t think she’d struck it very hard and continued on her way,” Frye said.

Martin told Frye she’d called her father right after the incident and showed an outgoing call around that time on her cellphone, the officer testified. Martin told police she had been working until 3 a.m. at Wendy’s in New Lenox, then she drove a co-worker to his home in the Fairmont area.

She was going through Lockport to get on Interstate 355 and return to Olympia Fields on Interstate 80, Frye said.

Frye said Martin denied using any alcohol or drugs to him and showed no signs of being under the influence that morning. She agreed to provide blood and urine samples and accompanied the officer to Silver Cross Hospital, he testified. Martin’s tests allegedly showed a small amount of marijuana in her system.

Plainfield panel rejects special use rule for targeted businesses

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A zoning amendment that would have required specific types of businesses to go through a special-use process was shot down Tuesday by the Plainfield Plan Commission.

The change would have required a special-use review for beauty, nail or tanning salons including barbershops; body art services; currency exchanges; flea markets; fortune tellers; massage therapy; and tobacco retailers, including those of vapor cigarettes.

The special-use designation means the business would need a public hearing and review by the Village Board, which on Aug. 24 looked over a previous version of the amendment.

The Plan Commission voted, 4-2, against recommending the measure, which still could go to the board for approval.

“I don’t think it’s really fair to single out businesses,” Commissioner Richard Kiefer said, adding that he had no issues with the listed businesses.

“Personally, I don’t like liquor stores and cigarette stores, and I don’t like tattoo parlors. But last I saw, those were all legal activities.”

John Renzi Plainfield Plan Commission member Kiefer said the special-use process ends up costing businesses more time and money.

Commissioners James Sobkoviak, John Renzi and Andrew Heinen also voted against the amendment. Commissioners John Green and Dan Seggebruch voted to support the amendment. Commissioner Mike Paris was absent.

“Personally, I don’t like liquor stores and cigarette stores, and I don’t like tattoo parlors.” Renzi said. “But last I saw, those were all legal activities.”

Green suggested that the amendment gives the village

more control over which businesses are able to set up shop without denying them opportunity.

“I think we want to be able to reserve the right to say, ‘Hey, stop a minute, and let’s talk things over [to discuss] what’s the best way in going about it,’” Green said.

Seggebruch said there was the possibility a detrimental business could be left unchecked without a more thorough process in place.

But listing specific types of businesses may lead to a slippery slope if the Village Board wants to add to the list, Renzi said.

“All of a sudden, we have a non-ending list,” Renzi said.

“It’s like the Code of Hammurabi.”

Commissioners disagreed on the amendment but acknowledged the impact a flea market could have on neighboring traffic and parking.

Another vote on recommending flea markets to require a special-use review also failed, in a 3-3 vote, with Kiefer, Sobkoviak and Renzi voting against it.

Children’s author to visit Coal City Library Saturday COAL CITY – The Coal City

Public Library District is the only Illinois stop that author Jan Brett will make on her 2015 tour to promote her new book, “The Turnip.”

The event is scheduled for Saturday at the Coal City High School auditorium. Doors will open at 4 p.m., and Brett will do a drawing illustration and presentation at 5 p.m. After the presentation, a book signing will take place.

Donald E. “Papa” Senffner, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald E. Senffner, at the age of 83 after a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Donald entered into eternal life on November 28, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Joliet, IL on January 13, 1932, to the late Steven and Mary (nee Bregar) Senffner. Donald was

employed by Olin Chemical for over 40 years and he also served as a part time police officer for the villages of Channahon, Rockdale and Minooka. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving under the auspices of the United States Army. A lifelong member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

In his free time, Donald enjoyed working outdoors especially plowing snow in the winter and cutting lawns in the summer for many of his neighbors. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. He could fix anything and he loved to tinker around the house.

Donald was truly a selfless individual and always put the needs of his family before his own. He was a hard worker and an excellent provider. He instilled in his family a deep faith in God and taught them the value of hard work, sacrifice and pushing through adversity.

His dedication and devotion to his family will always be remembered, greatly appreciated and serve as a wonderful example of a faithful husband and selfless father. A golden heart has stopped beating and his hardworking hands are now at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

We are truly blessed and eternally grateful that Donald was our loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Preceded in death by his devoted wife of sixty years, Dorothy A. Senffner (July 6, 2015); beloved son, Michael R. Senffner (April 11, 1998); and dear brothers-in law, Leroy Pommerening and Richard Klimek.

Sandy Berger, ex-Clinton national security adviser, dies

By KEN DILANIAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Former national security adviser Sandy Berger, who helped craft President Bill Clinton’s foreign policy and got in trouble over destroying classified documents, died Wednesday.

He was 70. The cause of death was cancer, said a statement by his consulting firm, the Albright Stonebridge

Group.

Berger was White House national security adviser from 1997 to 2001, when the Clinton administration carried out airstrikes in Kosovo and against Saddam Hussein’s forces in Iraq. Berger, a lawyer, also was deeply involved in the administration’s push for free trade, and in the response to al-Qaida’s bombing of American embassies in East Africa.

He was deputy national

security adviser during Clinton’s first term, and had previously worked in the State Department in President Jimmy Carter’s administration.

“Today, his legacy can be seen in a peaceful Balkans, our strong alliance with Japan, our deeper relationships with India and China,” President Barack Obama said in a statement.

presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, called Berger a “terrific public servant” who “embraced our common humanity and advanced our national interests.”

In 2005, Berger pleaded guilty to illegally removing classified documents from the National Archives by stuffing some papers in his pants leg. He cut up some of the documents with scissors, for reasons that remain unclear.

He was sentenced to probation and a $50,000 fine. He expressed regret for his actions.

Out of government, he helped found an international consulting firm that in 2009 merged with one run by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

“He cared deeply about where this country was going and what we could do to solve problems,” Albright said in a telephone interview.

Lack of sound in Chicago police videos raises questions

CHICAGO – A police dash-cam video that captures a white Chicago officer fatally shooting a black teenager 16 times has no sound, nor do videos from four other squad cars at the scene. But department protocol indicates that all the cruisers should have been recording audio that night.

The silence is almost sure to figure into the ongoing federal investigation of the case, and it raises questions about whether officers were careless with the recording equipment or, worse, attempting a cover-up.

“When you’ve got a standup cop with nothing to hide, the dash-cam is his friend,” said Gregg Stutchman, who has specialized in video forensics in California for 23 years. “But for cops who aren’t quite as standup, it would make sense that they wouldn’t want things recorded.”

Several experts on the type of equipment commonly installed in police vehicles told The Associated Press that it’s plausible for a single squad car to have a glitch preventing sound recording. But they could not imagine how an entire fleet of cars ever would lose audio at the same time and place by mere happenstance.

“I’ve never heard of it before,” Stutchman said. “It raises a red flag.” The more likely explanation is that audio was intentionally switched off, he said.

On the same day that the video was released last week by the city, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Van Dyke with first-degree murder.

House OKs releasing local funding, with additional money

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers continued the slow crawl to financing state government Wednesday, approving a measure that releases already-collected tax money to local governments waiting to fix roads, plow snow and dispatch fire trucks in emergencies.

The bill that cleared the House would free up $1.9 billion in revenue from sales of motor fuel, cellphone calls and more.

Unlike a similar bill that passed the House but wasn’t sent to the Senate, the new version adds spending requested by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner as well as some projects sought

by Democratic legislators.

Democrats said the Senate will convene Monday to take up the legislation.

The vote came a day after a rare conference among Rauner and the legislative leaders over the lack of a state spending plan despite the budget year nearing its halfway point. It adds money Rauner sought for road salt to battle snowdrifts and training for police and includes Democrats’ demands for funding domestic-violence shelters and energy-bill assistance for the poor.

Rauner acknowledged it boosts the deficit he rails against but told reporters that he wanted to address “essential government services so that the people of Illinois can be safe.”

Rauner and powerful legislative Democrats have sparred since spring, with the first-year governor demanding laws to reduce business operating costs and to curtail union power to spur economic growth, along with political changes to restore public confidence. Democrats say the priority should be

a budget that controls spending instead of allowing distribution based on federal court orders that are shoveling money out the door for human services at a rate that outstrips expected revenue.

Southern Ill. church destroyed by 2012 tornado reopens

RIDGWAY – A southern Illinois Roman Catholic church destroyed by a February 2012 tornado has reopened after a $6 million rebuilding effort.

The Leap Day twister demolished St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ridgway nearly four years ago. Only a marble altar and its foundation survived.

WSIL-TV reported that the Gallatin County church held a Sunday night Mass to commemorate the renamed St. Kateri Church.

The church is named for St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the first North American saint.

The tornadoes that swept across southern Illinois and demolished the church left eight dead in Harrisburg.

Illinois approves 3,600 medical marijuana patients

CHICAGO – The number of Illinois patients getting state approval to use medical marijuana jumped a bit higher during November, the first month of legal sales of the drug.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Wednesday that 3,600 patients have now been approved for the pilot program, including 22 children. That is 300 more than one month ago, a sizable increase compared with previous months.

The first licensed dispensaries started selling marijuana on Nov. 9, sparking new interest among potential patients.

The health department said Wednesday that about 29,300 people have started the patient registration process. Of those, almost 4,600 have submitted a complete application.

Woman pleads guilty to charges in young son’s 2013 death

BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington woman has pleaded guilty in the middle of her bench trial on charges that she didn’t obtain medical care for her young son who died from physical abuse.

Danielle Fischer, 25, pleaded guilty to child endangerment charges Tuesday on the trial’s second day, The Pantagraph reported.

Fischer was accused of failing to seek medical care for her son, Robbie Cramer, 3, after he was repeatedly beaten by her former boyfriend, Nicholas Compton. She was also accused of putting the boy in danger by leaving him with Compton.

Compton was convicted of murder last year for causing internal injuries that led to the boy’s March 2013 death.

Defense attorney Jane Foster said mounting incriminating evidence in the trial factored into Fischer’s decision to plead guilty Tuesday.

Defense disputes if cop could’ve saved Gray’s life

BALTIMORE – The first of six officers charged in a police custody death that sparked riots in Baltimore went on trial Wednesday as a prosecutor focused on what the patrolman failed to do: Push a button to call a medic who might have saved Freddie Gray’s life.

Attorneys for Officer William Porter disputed this and other claims made in the trial’s opening statements, questioning how and when Gray’s neck was broken

in the back of a police van, and whether the young black man was really in need of medical attention when he first asked for it.

“You may hope finding him guilty will quell unrest,” but Porter committed no crime, defense attorney Gary Proctor told jurors.

“Let’s show Baltimore the whole damn system isn’t guilty as hell,” Proctor said, paraphrasing a chant used by Black Lives Matter movement protesters.

2014 health spending grew fastest since 2009

WASHINGTON – U.S. health care spending last year grew at the fastest pace since President Barack Obama took office, driven by expanded coverage under his namesake law and by zooming prescription drug costs, the government said Wednesday.

After five years of historically low growth, national health expenditures increased by 5.3 percent in 2014, reaching $3 trillion, or $9,523 for every man, woman and child. That followed a 2.9 percent increase for 2013.

Such seemingly small percentage shifts resonate when the total is $3 trillion.

The report by nonpartisan experts at the Department of Health and Human Services is an annual snapshot of the nation’s health care system, a major slice of the economy.

Rising spending eventually has consequences for taxpayers, employers and individuals.

UK lawmakers vote to OK airstrikes on IS in Syria

By JILL LAWLESS and DANICA KIRKA The Associated Press LONDON – British lawmakers voted by a wide margin Wednesday to join the international campaign of airstrikes against the Islamic State group in Syria, after Prime Minister David Cameron asserted that bombing the “medieval monsters” in their heartland would make Britain safer.

The 397-223 vote in the House of Commons means Royal Air Force fighter jets – already operating against IS in Iraq from a base in Cyprus – could be flying over Syria within hours. Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond told Channel 4 news that the strikes would begin “very quickly ... probably not tonight but it could be tomorrow night.”

Anti-war protesters outside Parliament booed as they learned the result of the vote. The decision came after an emotional 10½-hour debate in which Cameron said

that Britain must strike the militants in their heartland and not “sit back and wait for them to attack us.”

Opponents argued that Britain’s entry into Syria’s crowded airspace would make little difference, and said Cameron’s military plan was based on wishful thinking that overlooked the messy reality of the Syrian civil war.

Cameron has long wanted to target IS in Syria, but had been unsure of getting majority support in the House of Commons until now. He suffered an embarrassing defeat in 2013 when lawmakers rejected a motion backing attacks on the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The mood has changed following the Nov. 13 Paris attacks, claimed by IS, that killed 130 people. Both France and the U.S. have urged Britain to join their air campaign in Syria, and Cameron said Britain should not let its allies down.

He said Britain was already a top target for IS at-

tacks, and airstrikes would reduce the group’s ability to plan more Paris-style carnage.

“Do we work with our allies to degrade and destroy this threat and do we go after these terrorists in their heartlands, from where they are plotting to kill British people?” he said. “Or do we sit back and wait for them to attack us?”

He said that attacking IS was not anti-Muslim but “a defense of Islam” against “women-raping, Muslim-murdering, medieval monsters.”

Cameron was backed by most members of his governing Conservative Party – which holds 330 of the 650 Commons seats – as well as members of the smaller Liberal Democrat party and others.

Labour, the main opposition, was divided. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – who represents the left wing of the party – spoke against what he called a “reckless and halfbaked intervention.”

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – At least two heavily armed attackers opened fire on a banquet at a social services center for the disabled Wednesday, killing 14 people and seriously wounding more than a dozen others in a precision assault that looked “as if they were on a mission,” authorities said.

Hours later, police hunting for the killers riddled a black SUV with gunfire in a shootout two miles from the late-morning carnage, and a man and woman with assault rifles, handguns and “assault-style clothing” were killed, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.

A third person who was spotted running near the gunbattle was detained, but Burguan said it was unclear if that person had anything to do with the crime.

It was the nation’s deadliest mass shooting since the attack at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, three years ago that left 26 children and adults dead.

Police shed no light on the motive for the massacre, but David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said the bureau is looking at several possibilities, including workplace violence and terrorism. He did not elaborate.

The attackers invaded the Inland Regional Center and began shooting around 11 a.m.

They opened fire in a conference area that the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health had rented out for an employee banquet, said Marybeth Feild, president and CEO of the nonprofit center.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Vicki Cervantes said witnesses reported seeing one to three gunmen.

“They came prepared to do what they did, as if they were on a mission,” the police chief said.

Burguan said that someone had left the county employees’ event after “there was some type of dispute,” but investigators were not sure whether that had anything to do with

the subsequent massacre in the Southern California city of 214,000 people about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

As gunfire echoed through the large three-building complex, several people locked themselves in their offices, desperately waiting to be rescued by police. Some texted their loved ones or telephoned them and whispered to them what was going on.

“People shot. In the office waiting for cops. Pray for us. I am locked in an office,” Terry Petit’s daughter texted him.

Petit, choking back tears as she read the text for reporters at the scene, said his daughter works at the center, where social workers find jobs, housing and transportation and provide other services to people with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

Ten of the wounded were hospitalized in critical condition, and three were in serious condition, Fire Chief Tom Hannemann said.

That the violence happened at a place dedicated to helping people with developmental disabilities – even if they were not targeted – made it even harder for some to comprehend.

“These are all disabled kids, very disabled,” said Sherry Esquerra, who was searching for her daughter and son-in-law, both of whom work at the center. “She gets all the services she possibly could for these kids. So I just don’t understand why somebody would come in and start shooting.”

FBI agents and other law enforcement authorities converged on the center and searched room to room for the attackers. Triage units were set up outside, and people were wheeled away on stretchers.

Others were marched from the building with their hands up so that police could search them and make sure the attackers weren’t trying to slip out.

They had indeed escaped.

One witness, Glenn Willwerth, who runs a business across the street, said he heard 10 to 15 shots and then saw an SUV with blacked-out windows pull out “very calmly, very slowly” and drive off.

India, Brazil resist bid for long-term carbon goals

By KARL RITTER and SETH BORENSTEIN The Associated Press LE BOURGET, France – Attempts to inscribe a long-term goal to phase out carbon emissions in an envisioned global climate pact are facing pushback at U.N. talks from big developing countries including India and Brazil.

Negotiators from both countries said Wednesday they favor sticking to the already established goal of limiting global warming to 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F) above pre-industrial times – a level that scientists say could avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

That goal was formally in-

troduced in the U.N. talks in 2010. But many countries are calling for the Paris deal to include a road map on how to achieve it, such as a joint target for phasing out the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

Various options have been proposed. The United States and other members of the Group of Seven wealthy countries earlier this year endorsed a “decarbonization of the global economy over the course of this century.”

“Decarbonization is something that has appeared recently. We don’t even know what that means,” Indian delegate Ajay Mathur told reporters. “Does it mean zero

By JENNIFER C. KERR The Associated Press WASHINGTON – After years of failed efforts, the House voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to sharply scale back the federal role in American education.

But the bill would retain the testing requirement in the 2002 No Child Left Behind law that many parents, teachers and school districts abhor.

The legislation, approved 359-64, would return to the states the decision-making power over how to use students’ test performance in assessing teachers and schools.

The measure also would end federal efforts to encourage academic standards such as Common Core.

The 1,000-plus page measure was a compromise reached by House and Senate negotiators. The Senate is to vote on it early next week and President Barack Obama is expected to sign it.

Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., who led the House-Senate conference committee on the legislation, said Washington has been micromanaging the na-

tion’s classrooms for too long.

“Today, we turn the page on the failed status quo and turn over to our nation’s parents and our state and local leaders the authority, flexibility and certainty they need to deliver children an excellent education,” he said.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement after the vote that the bill would “reduce over-testing and one-sizefits-all federal mandates,” although some conservative lawmakers argued that it would not go far enough, and they voted against it.

Outgoing Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who has overseen much of the law’s implementation, praised the bill as a critical step toward protecting the civil rights of students.

“It enshrines in law the expectation that where schools serve students poorly or have low graduation rates over extended periods of time, and where groups of students aren’t making progress, there will be accountability and action for change,” Duncan said in a statement just after the vote.

The term is generally understood to mean sharp reductions of carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, but it hasn’t been defined precisely.

Brazil’s lead negotiator Antonio Marcondes told The Associated Press that there was no need to come up with a new joint climate goal.

“The long-term goal is already there: It’s 2 degree Celsius,” he said.

Marcondes added that Brazil would consider options that emphasize that phasing out fossil fuels will be easier for some countries than others. He referred to a joint Brazilian-German declaration in

August that backed a “decarbonization of the global economy” while noting that some countries will need financial and technological help to make the transition to cleaner energy.

The long-term goal is one of the issues that split the larger group of developing countries in the climate talks. Oil-rich Saudi Arabia opposes wording calling for a phase-out of carbon emissions, while small island nations that face an existential risk from rising seas are among the strongest advocates. China has largely stayed silent.

It’s among the crunch issues that need to be resolved before negotiators can ink what would be the first cli-

mate deal to ask all countries to limit their greenhouse gas emissions. Another is how to ramp up the individual emissions targets that nations have proposed because scientific analyses show they’re not consistent with the 2-degree target.

“We must speed the process up because we have much work to do,” French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told a news conference on Wednesday.

Fabius said negotiators need to come up with a new draft agreement by noon Saturday so that environment and foreign ministers have something to work with when they arrive for the second week of talks.

Be on the lookout for online scams Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday are in the rear-view mirror.

Between the three, if you haven’t finished your holiday shopping, chances are you’ll hit the Internet to complete your gift-giving needs. After all, the National Retail Federation predicted nearly 50 percent of shoppers will shop online.

So as you surf the Internet to find that perfect gift for Uncle Clark or Aunt Ellen, keep in mind scammers will be active in trying to take advantage of you.

The Better Business Bureau is warning online shoppers that scammers have a number of schemes they use to trick buyers into giving up credit card and personal information.

“Shopping online is convenient, but it comes with some risks consumers need to take into consideration,” Dennis Horton, director of the Rockford Regional Office of the Better Business Bureau, said in a news release. “As an example, shoppers worry about retailers losing their credit card information in a data breach, but a bigger concern should be about hackers using retail tools to fool them.”

Among those tools and schemes: Online coupons. Scammers use fake websites to lure potential victims with coupons for popular items, such as a new electronic devices or the hot toy of the season. The websites will require the buyer to provide personal and credit card information as well as their address. With that information, they can go on a buying spree of their own. Look for red flags, such as misspellings and multiple pop-up windows. Use only retailers you know, and check out the business.

Malicious links. Because many legitimate retailers send deals directly to your inbox, scammers will send fake emails promising incredible deals and savings. The emails will ask you to click on a link or open an attachment that could load tracking software onto your computer, allowing scammers to search for and find personal and credit card information. Never click on a link in an email from someone you don’t know. Check with the retailer directly, and delete all suspicious emails.

Gift cards. You might get an email or a text that offers a $50 gift card for half price, or an offer that says you have won a $100 gift card. If you have to provide credit card information immediately to redeem, it’s a scam. Look for information about the deal on the store’s website. If the email is from a person, contact them directly. A real gift card will have a code you put in at the end of checkout to claim the money. It will not ask you for personal information, to download an attachment or take you to a third-party site.

Shopping online can be a convenient way to find gifts for loved ones this holiday season. Make sure you are taking the necessary precautions to keep your personal information safe so the holiday season doesn’t get more expensive than it already is.

A beacon of hope in dark times ST. LOUIS – The symposium for the Year of Consecrated Life set by Pope Francis “to wake up the world” seemed to be providentially timed. As the 500 nuns gathered for Mass on Friday night in a cathedral built by French immigrants, news streamed into my phone about terrorists attacks in Paris. The faces of joy around me seemed a world away from the hatred on display in the murder of innocents. And that made me realize how valuable these sisters really are.

As Sister Mary Elizabeth, a Sister of Life friend from New York, came over to say hello, I realized I had sat at the pew closest to a statue of St. Joan of Arc, the young French saint from the end of the Middle Ages known for her strength. It was a strength that went beyond the martial, but we popularly remember her mainly for her feats on the battleground.

But St. Joan believed she was asked by Jesus to live an intensely Christian life, one “with a new commitment to sacramental life and to prayer: daily participation in Mass, frequent Confession and Communion and long periods of silent prayer,” according to Pope Benedict, speaking in 2011.

During the Consecrated Life symposium, there was considerable talk of and meditation on “prophetic witness.” This does not mean soothsaying. There were no

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez crystals here. Rather, it is the radical commitment to the kind of life proposed in the New Testament, the kind that St. Joan evinced. As Archbishop Augustine Di Noia, a New York native visiting from the Vatican, put it in his opening address to the sisters: “The prophetic witness of the religious life is precisely to communicate in a public and authorized institutional form this seeking of the things that are above – that which is at the heart of life on high in Christ Jesus and to which all Christians, and indeed all people, are called.”

It is a wholehearted surrender to God, who, as Rabbi Jonathan Sacks reminds us in his book “Not in God’s Name,” made all people in his image. As he puts it: “Now is the time for Jews, Christians and Muslims to say what they failed to say in the past: We are all children of Abraham. ... We are blessed. And to be blessed, no one has to be cursed. God’s love does not work that way.”

Elsewhere in the book he writes: “Freedom involves letting go of hate, because hate is the abdication of freedom.

That is what Moses taught those who were about to enter the Promised Land. Don’t hate

the people who persecuted you. Instead, learn from that experience how to build a society without persecution.”

He says that this is precisely “what the Holocaust survivors taught me: look forward, not back. Build a life, a family, a future, a hope. Hate makes us slaves; therefore let it go. Do not wage war on the children of darkness. Make sure instead that you and your children are sources of light.”

The nuns gathered at the symposium have given their lives to God, making the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience to a Creator who asks us to honor His name “by honoring his image, humankind,” as Sacks puts it. These leaders could be a source of healing and renewal beyond the cloister.

There is a need for the cultivation of a culture that nurtures people like St. Joan, who know who they are in the light of faith and love, even in the face of the most unjust ends. Pure love. Sacrifice. It’s what families are made of. It’s what healthy civilizations are made of. You don’t have to believe to give.

USF women overcome slow start to improve to 8-0

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When you saw the resumes of both teams, you could be forgiven if you expected to see a one-sided affair when the University of St. Francis’ women’s basketball team returned to its first action since last Tuesday when it hosted Trinity Christian College in the first game of a doubleheader between the schools.

After all, the Fighting Saints entered ranked 13th in NAIA Division II, the first time that the program had ever cracked the top 25 in that poll. USF was 7-0 on the year, its best start since the 1980-81 season, and was one of just eight unbeaten teams in NAIA Division II. Coach Samantha Quigley’s

squad entered leading the division in three-point field goal percentage (.437), was ranked second in scoring margin (18.4) and was seventh in field goal percentage (.473). Meanwhile, the visiting Trolls had lost their first eight games.

But for those who weren’t expecting to see much drama, they were surprised as Trinity jumped out to a 15-12 lead after one quarter and was still up 28-27 at the break.

However, the second half was a much different story as USF took control with a decisive 26-10 third quarter and wound up capturing a 77-55 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory on Quigley Court at the Sullivan Center on Wednesday.

“You can’t just turn the switch on when you feel like it,” Quigley said. “We have

to come to play no matter what the circumstances are.

We might be without another point guard on Saturday, so our girls just have to come to play. We have to find the puzzle pieces and we have to make it work. It’s a team game, and we have to understand that, so people are going to have to play different positions, and that’s just life.”

Guard Christina Ekhomu wasn’t able to play after breaking her nose and guard Ivana Markovic had to exit with an unknown injury during this contest.

“We have to come ready to compete every day and we need to get better every day. Just because we’re 8-0, we can’t be satisfied, since if we’re satisfied, we’re never going to get any better. We can’t be satisfied with being

ranked 13th, we have to work, work, work to crack the top 10 because what we’re trying to do is win a national championship.”

After making just 12 of 32 shot tries (37.5 percent) and 1 of 6 from three (16.7 percent) in the first half, the Saints (80, 3-0) got things going in the final 20 minutes by making 20 of 31 attempts (64.5 percent) and 4 of 7 from beyond the arc (57.1 percent). For the game they made 32 of 63 shots (50.8 percent) and 5 of 13 from three-point range (38.5 percent).

Leading USF was Bolingbrook graduate Kamari Jordan, who had a game-high 28 points plus four assists and five steals. Charnelle Reed had 21 points and 16 rebounds and Alexis Brown scored 10 points off the bench. Ro-

meoville graduate Angelica Osusky and Cody Brand had six points apiece. Trinity (09, 0-4) received 21 points from Celina Wanta.

“At halftime, we really didn’t have to say much to each other,” Jordan said. “We all knew what we were doing wrong and we needed to pick it up. We know that teams are going to come at us so it’s going to be a battle every night.

We just need to get healthy and stay healthy and also come to play every night.

“I like our intensity and when we come to play, we play, and it doesn’t seem hard to score. We have so many scorers on this team and so many different ways to score, like getting threes and layups.

We’re not a selfish team since we’re willing to make the extra pass.”

We are an older team with great leadership. We all love to play the game and playing with each other as teammates.”

The Saints went 28-66 (42.4 percent) from the field and 6-19 (31.6 percent) from beyond the arc. They outrebounded the Trolls by 10 (45-35) and had 16 assists. The Saints are currently ranked sixth in the nation in assists.

“We had to treat this game just like any other when you have a big lead,” said senior Edvinas Presniakovacs, a Plainfield South graduate.

“We work on things or run different plays that we normally would only do in practice.

The ranking is special, but it doesn’t change our approach or our work ethic. Our goals are still the same. We could have a special season.”

JOLIET - On Tuesday, the University of St. Francis men’s basketball team received their highest NAIA Division II ranking in program history fourth in the latest coaches poll.

Then on Wednesday evening, they returned to the Sullivan Center and beat Trinity Christian, 70-45, in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.

The Fighting Saints (7-0, 3-0) are off to their best start to a season since the 1989-90 team opened with nine consecutive wins.

Trinity’s Myles Birgans gave the Trolls a quick 2-0 lead but it was all Saints after that.

Senior Ilya Ilyayev scored six consecutive points, ending the night with a team-high 20, and St. Francis was off and running.

The Saints built the lead to 23 (36-13) with 2:48 to go in the half and lead 38-20 at the break.

“We really wanted to sustain the defensive effort tonight,” Saints coach Ryan Marks said. “They did a great job of that tonight. Trinity is a hard cutting team and you have to have real good discipline against them. I think our pressure really led to their poor shooting early and it snowballed for them after that.”

St. Francis held the Trolls (4-5,0-3) to 28 percent (15 of 54) from the field for the game and they only hit 2 of 21 three-point attempts.

“The national ranking is great exposure for the program,” Marks said. “But this team got a taste last year of experiencing the national tournament and that is the goal, get back and do better than last year.”

Lewis trio earn all-region honors SUBMITTED REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – A day before No. 20 Lewis women’s volleyball plays in the NCAA Midwest Regional, three Flyers have earned all-region honors.

Junior libero Nicole Yuede was named to the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-Midwest Region First team by a vote of the region’s sports information directors. Yuede was the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference Libero of the Year.

Her 638 digs this season are tied for the most in a single season in school history.

In 2007 Ashlee Lindish also recorded 638. Yuede needs just one dig to break the mark.

She set a single-match school record with 42 digs against Truman State earlier this season.

“It is a great honor for Nicole and the team,” Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. “She’s worked very hard this season and battled through a tough semester. I am proud and lucky to coach such a driven individual.”

Sophomore middle hitter Aly Schneider was named an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region selection. Schneider owns 109 block assists, sixth most for a single season in Lewis history. Her .339 attack percentage ranks fourth in the GLVC. “Aly had a great freshman season last year and took the next step as a sophomore this year,” Smith said. “This honor shows she became a player opponents had to scout against.”

Senior rightside hitter Alexis Davito, a Lockport graduate, earned AVCA All-Region Honorable Men-

tion accolades. Her 51 aces this season are a new rally scoring era single season Lewis record. Her total bests the record 46 she recorded last year. Davito is hitting .293 on the season with 2.78 kills per set.

“Alexis earned a lofty reputation around the region because of her play the last three years,” Smith said. “It is a credit to her that she was able to continue to put up impressive numbers this year even while teams have seen her for several seasons.”

The trio helped Lewis (30-4) to the 2015 GLVC Championship. Lewis plays Grand Valley State today in the NCAA Midwest Regional Quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m. at Ferris State.

The award comes just after the conclusion of the most successful girls cross country season in school history, which included five major invitational titles, a conference title, a regional title, a sectional title and a state championship.

Gasol has double-double as Bulls beat Nuggets

By BRIAN SANDALOW The Associated Press CHICAGO — Pau Gasol had 26 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Bulls to a 99-90 win over the struggling Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night.

Gasol shot 12 for 19 from the field and had his fifth consecutive double-double for the Bulls, who won for the third time in four games and improved to 7-1 at home. Jimmy Butler, playing through a lingering right heel contusion, scored 19 points in 39 minutes.

Derrick Rose finished with 12 points on 3-for-17 shooting.

Will Barton scored 16 points and Kenneth Faried had 14 points and nine rebounds as Denver lost its eighth straight.

The Nuggets, who finished

shooting 39 percent from the field, led 72-68 heading to the fourth quarter after limiting the Bulls to 17 points in the third.

The Bulls regained the lead for good at 82-79 with 7:37 left on Doug McDermott’s 3-pointer.

Denver fell behind by eight but cut the lead to four on J.J. Hickson’s dunk with 2:22 left.

Chicago then rebuilt its lead and salvaged the win after outscoring the Nuggets 31-18 during the fourth, including 12 from Gasol.

Joakim Noah came off the bench and added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who played most of the game without Nikola Mirotic after he suffered a concussion and facial laceration during the first quarter. Mirotic was defending in

the lane when he took an inadvertent right elbow to the face from a driving Emmanuel Mudiay, sending him to the floor.

Mirotic, who had three points and two rebounds, left the game immediately and went to the locker room for observation where he received stitches The Bulls led 51-46 at halftime. Gasol made his first six shots and ended the half with 12 points, while Faried’s 10 led the Nuggets.

Kane racking up points

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO — When Patrick Kane was just a kid, his father would carry his equipment when he went to camps or tournaments. Kane carried a smaller stick and an orange ball for practicing stickhandling, and he put them to good use whenever he had an opportunity.

All seeds of a record-breaking streak for the Chicago Blackhawks.

“Sometimes I would throw my sister in the net, it would be the doorway to our hotel room, and try and score on whether it was one, two or three of them at a time,” Kane said. “But a lot of good memories, and that was kind of my childhood growing up, was playing hockey and enjoying that stuff.”

The joy is still there, especially right now. The star winger is on the best run of his career after a trying offseason, part of a strong start to the season that could lead to more hardware for his already impressive resume.

Kane’s second-period goal against Minnesota on Tuesday extended his point streak to 20 games, one shy of the franchise record set by Hall of Famer Bobby Hull during the 1971-72 season. It’s already a record for a U.S.-born player – Kane is from Buffalo, New York – and the longest such run in the league since Sidney Crosby’s 25-game streak in 2010, according to STATS. “He’s a man on a mission, that’s for sure,” Wild coach Mike Yeo said. “I think that he’s got good chemistry with his line. You see the way that those guys are playing, the zone time that they get. I think that he’s just been a difference maker, shift after shift.”

Kane, center Artem Anisimov and rookie Artemi Panarin have formed one of the NHL’s most potent lines in their first season together. Heading into Wednesday’s games, Kane leads the league with 23 assists and 38 points. Anisimov is second on the team with 10 goals,

and Panarin is second on the Blackhawks with 16 assists and 23 points.

Kane’s line has been the only consistent combination so far for the Stanley Cup champions, who have dropped four of six heading into Thursday’s visit to Ottawa.

“That line, they all been complementing each other and it’s been our go-to group,” coach Joel Quenneville said.

“So it’s been effective in a lot of ways.”

The Blackhawks searched for a big second-line center to play with Kane for years before they acquired the 6-foot4 Anisimov in the trade that sent Brandon Saad to Columbus this summer. Panarin, another Russian forward who has a similar skill set to Kane with his passing prowess and ability to hold onto the puck, signed a two-year deal with Chicago late last season and scored in his NHL debut in October – off a pass from Kane.

Learning how to play with Kane, 27, with his vision and talent, can take awhile, but his current line seemed to work almost immediately.

“I think we’re all kind of figuring how to play with one another,” Kane said. “You know, it’s still a work in progress, too. I don’t think we’re happy or satisfied with where we’re at.”

Kane has long been one of hockey’s biggest stars, but his future was in question when he was the subject of a sexual assault investigation in western New York this summer.

An Erie County prosecutor announced last month that he had declined to file charges against Kane because of a lack of credible evidence in a case “rife with reasonable doubt.”

Kane maintained his innocence throughout the investigation. When it was over, he said he was relieved for his family and friends, and looked forward to getting back to normal.

The streak began on Oct. 17, when he got an empty-net goal in a 4-1 victory over Columbus. He had a close call at Anaheim last week, picking up a secondary assist on Duncan Keith’s tying goal in the final minute of a 3-2 overtime win.

New Lenox pastor answers kids’ questions about God in books Know More

Because every creature needs something to eat in order to live, was the Rev. Dave Hedlin’s ready answer.

Kids, to paraphrase the late Art Linkletter, ask Hedlin the darnedest questions about God. And Hedlin, pastor at Peace Lutheran Church in New Lenox, loves answering them. So Hedlin made it easier.

First, Hedlin instituted a question box inside the church and dedicated the third weekend each month to answering them. Two years ago and with the help of a committee, Hedlin published “Questions Kids Ask About God” with art students from Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 illustrating it.

Among the 22 questions asked in the 32-page book are How old is God? Did Jesus really have long hair and a beard? What is heaven? Does God watch us all the time?

This year, Hedlin and his committee published a companion coloring book. The books, Hedlin said, make great Christmas gifts for children.

“Kids in church need to know their questions count.

This is really important to me because some people grow up in a church atmosphere where you don’t ask any questions,” Hedlin said. “Second, the books are an outreach tool. We know there are many different families today where no one goes to church.”

Eric Sperstad, a member at Peace Lutheran Church, headed up the five-person publishing committee, a role he felt was a true ministerial calling. In an email, Sperstad said “Questions Kids Ask About God” is now in its third printing. Besides the coloring book, the church recently ordered

The books are published through QKA Publishing Co., which the committee created and which is affiliated with Peace Lutheran Church. Sperstad feels the project impacted everyone who worked on it, including the printers.

“This is what I call the spirit of God at work,” Sperstad said in the email.

The project effects children in several significant ways.

Proceeds from “Questions Kids Ask About God” go to two organizations that help children: Lutheran World Relief and Feed My Starving Children.

Since the books’ publication, Hedlin said, the church has sold 2,500 copies of “Questions Kids Ask About God” to customers in all 50 states – and even a few foreign countries – and donated $4,000 each to the two charities.

The coloring book has sold more than 1,000 copies, with one church in Springfield ordering 200 to give away at a community event, Hedlin said. Kids at Peace Lutheran

Church continue to submit questions and Hedlin continues to answer them on the third weekend of each month.

“Sometimes we have so many questions, we do the fourth weekend, too,” Hedlin said.

Taking the time to explain spiritual matters to children is far preferable, Hedlin said, to the experience one grandfather shared. When the grandfather’s son was a teen, he posed a question to his pastor and received this answer: “Sit down; shut up.”

The teen, Hedlin said, never returned to church. The grandfather bought the book for his son’s children.

“We know the answers in [the books] don’t match everyone’s theology,” Hedlin said.

“But, nevertheless, the situation it raises helps the kids know their questions count.”

At the bridge table, you might have the choice of bidding a four-card or a five-card suit. Look at today’s North hand. After partner opens one club, would you respond one diamond or one spade?

In the old days, responder always bid the longest suit first. If partner had a four-card major, he would show it and a 4-4 fit would not be missed.

These days, showing the major first is in vogue. A columnist recommended bidding one spade, not one diamond, with that North hand. As you can guess, I disagree. I think bidding the major first is right if two criteria are satisfied: The responder has below game-invitational values and a good-quality major. This hand, with 10 points, two aces and a five-card suit, is worth a game-invitation. And that is not such a great spade suit. In this admittedly constructed deal, if North responds one spade, South will raise to two spades (which might be with only three-card support and a singleton somewhere), and what would North do then? Probably three diamonds, but it isn’t clear-cut with only four spades.

If North bids one diamond, South will rebid one spade, and four spades will be reached. Note that four spades

by North fails after East leads the heart queen. The defenders take one spade, two hearts and one club. But four spades by South is makable. West’s best lead is the club queen. Declarer wins with dummy’s ace, takes the two top trumps, then plays on diamonds, discarding a heart on the fourth round.

The studies also revealed that high-dose calcium supplements can lead to an increased risk of kidney stones and heart attack. Calcium from food did not have the same risks.

What to do? My colleague Dr. Walter Willett, chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, recommends less calcium and more vitamin D than the guidelines suggest. He suggests 500 to 700 mg a day of calcium and 800 to 1,000 IU of vitamin D. Current guidelines recommend 600 IU of vitamin D between ages 19 and 70 years, and 800 IU after age 70.

While not everyone agrees with him, I regard Dr. Willett as one of the world’s most knowledgeable experts in this area.

I’ve seen him proven right a lot more often than wrong.

At Dr. Willett’s suggested amount, you can probably get all or most of your calcium from food. Dairy products are a great source. Kale, collard greens and salmon are good non-dairy calcium sources. (I’ve put a table listing more calcium-containing foods on my website, askdoctork.com.)

You can take a lowdose calcium supplement to make up what you don’t get from food.

Keeping your calcium supplement dose lower should help you avoid the possible risks of higher-dose supplements.

65-year-old woman. My doctor says my bones are strong, and he wants to keep them that way. So, for years I’ve been taking a daily 1,200 milligram calcium supplement. Now I hear that might be too much. How much calcium do I really need?

That is, they do not have osteoporosis (or “thin bones”). To prevent osteoporosis, they have been taking the recommended amount of calcium -- 1,000 milligrams (mg) a day for women ages 50 and younger and 1,200 mg for women over 50 -- in an effort to preserve their bones.

It is true that the majority of studies show that a combination of calcium and vitamin D supplements reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis. So far, so good.

But the main reason to prevent osteoporosis is to reduce the risk of bone fractures. And most studies find that calcium supplements (or even calcium plus vitamin D) do not reduce that risk.

Worse, calcium supplements may even increase other health risks.

One study involved postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative trial.

Some 18,000 women were randomly assigned to take 1,000 mg of calcium and 400 international units (IU) of vitamin D each day. (Vitamin D works with calcium to build healthy bones.)

Another 18,000 women got placebo pills. After seven years, women who took calcium and vitamin D were no less likely to break their hips than the women who took a placebo pill.

Another study analyzed the results of more than a dozen studies. It found that women (and

Dear Abby: When I was 19 and played bass in a rock band, I fell in love with a guy I’ll call “Brian.” He was three years older and also a musician. We had the best times together – we were young and wild without a care in the world.

But the years rolled on and we got older. After six years together, I got pregnant.

I thought Brian would be thrilled, but he wasn’t.

It changed how I felt about him. I was heartbroken and lost respect for him.

I grew up fast, and put our son, “Ricky,” first. Brian, on the other hand, has refused to give up his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. He shows up to see Ricky two or three times a month, but doesn’t even look at him. I can’t stand the way he ignores our son. Brian says I can’t alter who and how he is. I say, if we mattered to him, he would change on his own.

This leads to arguments.

Which is worse – having my son grow up with an absent father who’s not “present” even when he’s here?

Or Ricky seeing us fight all the time, but leaving the option for Brian to be a part of his life? Or should I get my ex out of our lives for good, and risk resentment from Ricky because I moved on with our lives? – Fully
