By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city will hire additional public works staff and pay $850,000 more into its police and fire pensions in 2015, under a proposed $279 million budget presented to the Joliet City Council Tuesday night.

City Manager Jim Hock proposed $172.3 million in operating expenses for 2015, representing a 1.8 percent increase over this year’s budget.

The budget has no tax or fee increases, Hock said.

Under the plan, the city would hire four maintenance workers, two water department workers and one police sergeant, as well as keep eight full-time firefighters that previously had been funded by the

The city’s general fund will subsidize $448,000 for solid waste expenses.

It’s a time crunch to approve next year’s budget. The council will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday and a public hearing is set for Dec. 16. Then, the city council will vote on the final budget at its Dec. 18 meeting.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said his office had been notified about the shooting, but the identities of the victims was being withheld Tuesday night.

“We are interviewing witnesses, but we have no suspect information to release at this time,” Roechner said Tuesday night.

Johnson previously said she resigned because the Personnel Committee wanted a full-time human resources director instead of part time.

Geiger said the county reviewed 13 applications for the position, conducted four interviews and two second interviews.

Three new judges on the bench

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – No abacus was required to count the number of men being sworn in Tuesday as Will County Circuit Court judges.

Though Daniel Kennedy was given one anyway.

“Dan and I were friends [who bonded] more over sports than law. We’re both very competitive,” retired Judge Marzell Richardson told an audience that filled the Joliet City Council chambers.

“While I was on the bench there was an eviction case where we disagreed over the number of days left to vacate.”

Richardson prevailed, but a short time later, he arrived at his bench to find an abacus waiting for him. On Tuesday Richardson presented another to Will County’s newest judge.

“You’re no longer a player, you’re a referee,” Richardson told Kennedy.

Kennedy, Dave Carlson and Daniel Rippy were sworn in before the rest of the circuit and associate judges. Rippy was elected to replace a retired judge while Carlson and Kennedy took seats created as a result of Will County’s growing population.

“We all know how much this county needs these judges and tomorrow they hit the ground running,” Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said.

Selecting a chief judge was the first duty the newcomers had along with the other circuit judges. Schoenstedt was selected again for a second two-year term as chief judge.

Schoenstedt has assigned Kennedy to preside over misdemeanor cases, Rippy to foreclosures and Carlson to felony cases.

Schoenstedt also administered the oath of office to Kennedy and Carlson while Rippy was sworn in by Appellate Court Justice William Holdridge.

Carlson and Rippy started together as assistant prosecutors with the Will County State’s Attorney’s office. Rippy told Carlson they’d come a long way from riding to work together from Chicago in Carlson’s “terrible, terrible car.”

“One of the skills as judge has to have is to listen,” Carlson noted later. “We took my car because it was better than

his.”

Carlson was named an associate judge last year. Rippy was a private attorney and Kennedy was a public defender. Rippy also was an elected village trustee in Plainfield but resigned that position in November after being elected judge.

“Besides being a father, being a judge is the greatest job in the world,” Carlson said.

“There is no greater honor than being called ‘honorable’ and that’s the standard we have to uphold.”

New Rialto marquee stirs backlash

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The new design for the Rialto Square Theatre marquee has been met with an online firestorm of criticism from many residents.

The Rialto Square Theatre wants to replace the marquee as part of an overall capital campaign to refurbish the whole theater. The theater found funding from Ed Czerkies, a retired construction magnate who announced a $350,000 donation last week to replace the marquee. The design provides a place on the marque for him to honor his parents.

But the design angered many residents, who went on Facebook to complain. Hundreds of comments were posted on the “You know you’re from Joliet if …” and Councilman Jim McFarland’s Facebook pages.

Marianne Wolf is among the dissenters. Born and raised in Joliet, she said it’s a shame the marquee was going to be replaced with something that looks like a “scoreboard for a sporting event.”

“That sign is something that would look like it would belong in Las Vegas, not in downtown Joliet,” she said.

In 2007, the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority – a civic authority responsible for the theater – requested proposals from qualified bidders for a new design of the marquee, said Randy Green, the theater’s general manager.

After reviewing the submissions, the WCMEAA, with input from Joliet City Center Partnership’s since-disbanded architectural design committee, accepted Landmark Sign’s design. That was the design proposed to potential donors over the years, Green said.

“It was the best reflection of what this building reflects from an architectural standpoint but also in using the modern technology in a way that would enhance our ability to message and provide the information

Green said he wasn’t surprised by the reaction to the new design. Despite the criticisms, the Rialto Square Theatre is moving forward with it.

“There are lot of things people react emotionally to and certainly art is one of them and change is another. … I think you have to look at the fact that we continue to do things necessary to make sure the Rialto is a

viable entity for Joliet and Will County and that in this case we were able to make a very significant improvement through private funding.”

Nick Macris, Joliet resident and member of several civic or-

ganizations, said he was grateful for Czerkies’ donation but he was disappointed with the design of the marquee, specifically the prominence of the donors’ names on it.

Macris said he didn’t think the public had any opportunity to see or comment on it before it was unveiled Nov. 24 during the opening night of the 2014 Festival of Trees at the Rialto.

He said the Rialto Square Theatre should make changes in response to public criticism.

But Green said there was opportunity to provide input during the city’s Historic Preservation Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings in September and November respectively, where the design faced no opposition.

Because of the public outcry, McFarland said at Monday’s pre-council meeting he wanted anything of “historic significance” to go before the council for approval and public input.

He also said there should be more news releases and notices about zoning board of appeals and historic commission meetings sent to local media and residents.

“There’s something fundamentally wrong here and from what I heard from the public, they feel like there was no public input on the changes that were going to take place,” McFarland said.

James V. Smith, WCMEAA chairman, said every WCMEAA meeting is publicly posted and all minutes sent to City Hall. He said the board was unanimous in its approval of the new design.

“This is not something that just popped up. This is an ongoing process. We vetted this and given it thoughtful consideration for years,” he said.

Joliet Mayor Thomas Giarrante said he believed the WCMEAA did its due diligence and Czerkies was evidently happy with the design by making his donation.

“Thank God Mr. Czerkies stepped up with this donation and if he’s happy, I’m happy,” he said.

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Public Library Board of Trustees has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday morning to accept the resignation of Trustee Gretchen Fritz.

Fritz, a Republican, was elected to the Will County Board in November. A 1991 opinion by the Illinois Attorney General’s office states a citizen can’t be on a library board and county board at the same time.

Fritz declined to submit her resignation from the library board at a Nov. 19

meeting, since election results were unofficial.

She said she was waiting for official results.

Milavec said Gretchen after that meetFritz ing that if a special meeting wasn’t convened, Fritz’s resignation at the next scheduled Dec. 19 meeting would give just five days for candidates to file petitions to take her seat in the spring elections.

The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in the library’s small meeting room at 15025 S. Illinois St. in Plainfield.

No injuries in Joliet basement fire

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – No one was injured during a basement fire Monday in Joliet.

Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said a man was working in his basement woodshop about 2 p.m. in the 200 block of Westport Drive when he smelled smoke.

“He noticed flames coming

from a kiln his wife uses to make jewelry and tried to put it out with an extinguisher, but was unsuccessful,” Carey said.

The man got out and called 911. Carey said firefighters kept the fire from spreading to the rest of the house. Damage to the basement is considered “moderate,” according to fire reports. No financial estimate was provided.

JOLIET – The Holly Club, started by a group of teenage girls who sewed doll dresses in the late 19th century to raise money for the needy, turns 125 this year.

The Joliet-based club will celebrate its 125th year of giving with its annual ball Dec. 13 at the Joliet Country Club.

The ball is the primary way the Holly Club raises money.

The deadline for tickets is Friday.

All money raised at the ball goes to charity, said Lori Bergman, vice president of the Holly Club and chairwoman for the ball.

Last year, the Holly Club donated more than $45,000, and all of it stayed in Will County.

“All of our administrative costs are covered by the dues the members pay,” Bergman

Giving warm clothes is a fitting cause for an organization started by eight teenage girls in 1889 out of concern for those who were in need during the holidays. The Holly Club traces its roots to those girls, who originally called themselves the Young Maidens’ Christmas Association.

“They sewed clothes for dolls. That’s how they raised money,” Bergman said.

The girls raised money for toys, food and medicine for neighbors in need. Their moms became involved, which led to the first fundraising ball.

“The first ball they [the founding girls] could not even attend because they were so young,” Bergman said. The event has become a holiday tradition. At one point in the 1940s, about 400 couples attended the ball, she said.

The Lockport Township Park District may install a gym at the community center and Lewis University may put in a medical clinic for senior citizens, he said.

HOMER GLEN – A teenager was ticketed in a car crash last week involving an 87-yearold woman who later died.

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said Tuesday that William Tetyk, 18, of Homer Glen, was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident after the crash Thursday.

“We’re already talking to potential tenants and talking space needs analysis, but formally we haven’t done anything,” Benson said. “It depends on the township.”

He said Lockport park officials also are considering leaving the Central Square building. It’s a “sign of the times,” which are much better economically, Benson said. In the past, the agencies came together to save the historic Central Square building, he said.

LOCKPORT – Township officials in Lockport are considering building a community center to cater to senior citizens and provide more township office space.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lockport Central Square Room 318, 222 E. Ninth St., Lockport Township officials will hold a special meeting on the community center.

Township Supervisor Ronald Alberico said the township will propose a resolution to build a center. The center would be located on the 19000 block of Renwick Road near the Prairie Bluff Golf Course and Lockport Township Fire Protection District.

Alberico said the project, which may cost between $5 million and $10 million, would not require a tax increase. The township would provide about $2 million in available money and the rest would come from state and federal grants, he said. No state or federal funding has been secured yet.

Beverly J. Ambrose (nee Devore), passed away peacefully, at age 77, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home on November 29, 2014. Born September 12, 1937, in Tuscola, IL to the late Frank and Mildred (Doty) Devore.

She is survived by her devoted son, Steven (Dina) Bryce and grandsons Jacob and Tyler Bryce all of Minooka; and brother-inlaw, Harold “Buck” (Joanne) Saltzman of Forsyth, MO. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norbert Ambrose; stepmother, Marge Devore; loving sister, Dianne Saltzman; nephew, Bryon Saltzman; and niece, Kari (Saltzman) Adkins.

Beverly lived in Joliet, graduating from Joliet Township High School, before moving to Minooka and marrying Norb. She worked many years for Joliet Valves in Minooka. She and Norb enjoyed summers in Hayward, WI fishing and boating, before later moving to Myrtle Beach, SC where they lived until Norb’s death in 1995.

Beverly then relocated back to Minooka to be near her family.

There she joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church, sharing good times with the “lunch bunch”, while also enjoying outings with co-workers from Joliet Valves whom she remained close with.

Beverly also enjoyed cardinals, both the birds and the baseball team, but most of all she cherished the love of her family and friends.

William “Bill” Stanton Chaney passed away at Rx Hospital in Raleigh after a brief illness.

He was a resident at Morningside Assisted Living for several years. He was also an active member of he Unitarian/Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh and taught Sunday School there until the age of 89!

Bill was born in Joliet, IL, to Cassius Clay Chaney and Florence Louise Groves Chaney. He has a brother, Richard Chaney (wife, Vivian Chaney and their four children) and a sister, Ruth Chaney Koenig (deceased husband, Warner Koenig and their son, Donald Koenig). Bill’s father

Cassius Clay was the superintendent of General Refractories Company in Joliet for many years and later moved the family to Philadelphia to take the position of Vice-President of the National General Refractories Company.

Bill worked along side his dad for many years and then started his own firebrick and refractory’s company named “Chaney Company.” He ran this company for 66 years until his retirement at the age of 90.

Bill met and married Ethel Scotland while he was living in Joliet. They had four children, Scott Clay Chaney (son, William G. Chaney), Karen Chaney Kauffman Fletcher (husband, Dr. Robert G. Fletcher, children, Andrew Kauffman and Emma Davis), Norma, Christine Chaney Shear (son, Gerry Shear) and Ruth Chaney Walker (Daughter, Kim Burch Brown and son, Jeff Burch). Bill was also blessed with 6 grandchildren, William G. Chaney, Gerald Alan Shear, Emma Kauffman Davis, Andrew Scotland Kauffman, Kim Burch Brown and Jeff Burch. He was very proud of his great grandchildren, Robert, Nathanael, Benjamin, John, Joseph, Madelyn, Molly, Abby, Isac, and Alex.

Please remember Bill as a person who loved and cared for other people.

He was always looking for ways to make life better for so many people that he met along the way during his long and productive life. At the end of his life, many people returned the favor by loving and keeping him while he struggled with dementia.

Bill’s family would like to thank Morningside Assisted Living for the wonderful care they gave him. Also Dr. Friedman, who helped him so much. A big thanks goes out to all of the Drs. Robert “Skip” James Kantor, Jr., 55 of Joliet, IL succumbed to cancer at home surrounded by his family on November 29, 2014.

He then went on to the US Navy until being honorably discharged. He married his sweetheart, Janet in 1986. He was employed by Peoples Gas for nine years and then turned his love for the open road into a career and accumulated three million miles accident free. As an avid sports lover, his main passion was the game of hockey and the Chicago Blackhawks. Robert was a great person whom always leant a helping hand, comforting shoulder and a good laugh.

EDWARD B. MUDRON Edward B. Mudron, 89 years, of Joliet, IL. passed away peacefully at his home, Friday, November 28, 2014.

Survived by his four daughters, Lynn (Ted) Szlauderbach, Pam (Larry) Parzynski, Trish Mudron and Beth (Mike) Chermack.

Eight grandchildren, Douglas, Lauren, Larry, Danielle, Emily, Sarah, Corey and Courtney, numerous nieces and nephews.

Rolling Stones’ sax player Bobby Keys dead

By KRISTIN M. HALL The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Saxophonist Bobby Keys, a lifelong rock ‘n’ roller who toured with Buddy Holly, played on recordings by John Lennon and laid down one of the all-time blowout solos on the Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar,” has died. He was 70.

Michael Webb, who played keyboard with Keys, said Keys died Tuesday at his home in Franklin, Tennessee, after a lengthy illness. Keys had been on tour with the Stones earlier this year before his health prevented him from performing.

“The Rolling Stones are devastated by the loss of their very dear friend and legendary saxophone player, Bobby Keys,” the band said in a statement. “Bobby made a unique musical contribution to the band since the 1960s. He will be greatly missed.”

Keys, one of the few rock saxophonists to become a name in his own right, was a heavy-set man with jowls to match and had a raw, piercing sound. The Lubbock, Texas, native was born the same day as Keith Richards – Dec. 18, 1943 – and the Stones guitarist would often cite Keys as a soul mate and favorite musician. On “Brown Sugar,” he needed little time to seal his history with the band, which had decided a saxophone would work better than a guitar for the solo spotlight.

“It was the first take,” he would recall.

Keys also played memorable solos on such Stones favorites as the seven-minute jam “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” and the country-styled “Sweet Virginia.”

Other career highlights included Lennon’s chart-topping “Whatever Gets You Through the Night” and albums by Richards, George Harrison, Barbra Streisand and Eric Clapton. A self-titled solo album featured Harrison and Ringo Starr.

For a time, Keys played clubs and was billed as “Mr. Brown Sugar.”

“I have lost the largest pal in the world, and I can’t

express the sense of sadness I feel, although Bobby would tell me to cheer up,” Richards said in a statement.

Keys’ career dated to the 1950s, when as a teenager he played with fellow Lubbock native Holly and The Crickets. He met the Stones in the mid-’60s while they were on the same bill at a state fair in San Antonio, Texas, and was distraught that the British rockers had recorded a cover of Holly’s “Not Fade Away.”

“I said, ‘Hey, that was Buddy’s song,’” Keys recalled in Richards’ memoir “Life,” published in 2010.

“Who are these pasty-faced, funny-talking, skinny-legged guys to come over here and cash in on Buddy’s song?”

But once Keys listened more closely, he decided the Stones were playing “actual rock and roll,” an opinion the Stones more than shared about Keys. He first recorded with them in the late 1960s and toured and recorded with them off and on over the following decades, his work featured on three of the group’s most acclaimed albums: “Let It Bleed,” “Sticky Fingers” and “Exile on Main Street.”

In some ways, he was too close to Richards, sharing a taste for throwing televisions off hotel balconies and developing a heroin addiction that led to his temporary estrangement from the group. But he was with the Stones on every major tour over the past quarter century, dependably stepping up for his solo on “Brown Sugar.”

Keys’ memoir “Every Night’s a Saturday Night” was published in 2012, with a foreword by Richards. Keys recalled that he was exposed to rock ‘n’ roll through Holly’s music – not on the radio, but at the grand opening of a Texas gas station near the home of Keys’ grandparents.

It was the first time he heard an electric guitar played live.

“And right then and there I knew I wanted to have something to do with that music,” Keys explained. Holly “just kinda lit a fuse that started burning then, and it’s still burning now.”

Rauner says state budget ‘worse than discussed’

SPRINGFIELD – As lawmakers reconvened for the final week of their annual veto session, Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner said Tuesday that Illinois’ budget condition is even worse than previously was discussed.

Rauner is meeting with state budget experts and “getting into the hard facts on the budget right now,” he said.

“Every time we look under the hood, look at different departments, look at different issues, the problems, the deficits, the overspending is more significant than has been discussed in the past. We want to make sure we understand it,” Rauner said.

Autopsy finds that missing Illinois woman drowned

HUDSON – Preliminary autopsy results show that a missing 83-year-old woman found in a car submerged in a central Illinois lake drowned.

Katherine Reardon of Morton was pulled from Evergreen Lake on Sunday morning in her submerged car. Davis said forensic toxicology tests have been ordered. The accident remains under investigation.

Reardon was a school bus monitor for Morton School District 709. Her daughter reported her missing Nov. 24 when she didn’t show up for work. The coroner has said the death doesn’t appear suspicious.

November was fourth-coldest on record in Illinois

Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel said November’s

statewide average temperature was 34.2 degrees – 8.2 degrees below average.

That’s the fourth-coldest November on record. The record was set in November 1976, when the average temperature was 33.4 degrees.

The state also was unusually dry, averaging just less than 2 inches of precipitation in November. That’s about 1½ inches below average. Angel said that’s not a cause for concern because of wetter-than-average conditions in August, September and October.

When it came to snow last month, Angel said, many areas in southern Illinois saw more snow than areas in central and northern Illinois. Two to 5 inches fell south of Interstate 70, compared to less than 2 inches north of the interstate.

Illinois economic index shows growth continuing

URBANA – A University of Illinois index that tracks the state’s economy indicates steady growth since early this year.

The Institute of Government and Public Affairs said Monday its Flash Index was at 106.6 in November. Any reading over 100 indicates economic growth.

The index has been in the 106107 range since February.

Institute economist Fred Giertz also said strong improvement in the state’s unemployment rate is a sign the economy is growing. The jobless rate was 6.6 percent in October, down from 9.1 percent a year earlier. The index uses corporate earnings, consumer spending and personal income to track Illinois’ economy.

Lebanon says it has detained wife of Islamic State’s leader

By BASSEM MROUE The Associated Press BEIRUT – Lebanese authorities detained a woman and young boy believed to be the wife and son of the reclusive Islamic State group leader, and they were questioning the woman and conducting DNA tests on the child, senior Lebanese officials said Tuesday.

If their identities are confirmed, Lebanon may use the pair as bargaining chips to win the release of soldiers and police taken hostage by the extremists in cross-border attacks earlier this year.

The woman, who was identified as an Iraqi, and the child were taken into custody about 10 days ago while carrying fake ID cards, the officials said.

Very little is known about al-Baghdadi’s personal life, including how many wives and children he has. Conservative interpretations of Islam allow men to marry up to four wives. The Islamic State group did not immediately comment on the detentions, but the faction’s supporters on Twitter and militant websites cast doubt on the reports.

Adding to the confusion, the Lebanese army did not release an official statement regarding the pair.

A Lebanese military official identified the woman as Saja al-Dulaimi, who was held

by Syrian authorities and freed in a prisoner exchange with the Nusra Front, Syria’s al-Qaida-linked branch, earlier this year. The official said the woman “confessed during interrogation” that she was al-Baghdadi’s wife.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

In March, the Nusra Front freed more than a dozen Greek Orthodox nuns in exchange for the release of dozens of female prisoners by the Syrian government. A woman named Saja al-Dulaimi was reportedly on the list of prisoners freed

by Damascus.

A judicial official said the interrogation of the woman was being supervised by Lebanon’s military prosecutor, Saqr Saqr, and that a DNA test was underway to confirm that the child is her son. Experts said it would be difficult to confirm whether the woman is indeed al-Baghdadi’s wife.

Iran launches airstrikes into Iraq, U.S. says THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – The Pentagon said Iran has launched airstrikes against Islamic State militants in eastern Iraq.

Rear Adm. John Kirby said the U.S. believes this may be the first time Tehran has launched manned aircraft from inside Iran to strike targets in Iraq.

The Pentagon spokesman said the U.S. has not coordinated airstrikes or military activities with Iran. He said the U.S. continues to fly missions over Iraq and that it is up to the Iraqi government to avoid conflicts in its own airspace.

Iranian military leaders have acknowledged that dozens of their forces have been in Iraq fighting alongside Kurdish troops battling extremists.

“We admit that it’s difficult in the future to have an escalated action; so besides suffering from batons and tear gas, we would like to use our bodies to direct public attention to the issue,” Wong said Tuesday.

“We are not sure if the hunger strike can put pressure on the government, but we hope that when the public realizes the student hunger strike, they will ask themselves what they can do next.”

In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), an environmental impact statement (EIS) will be developed concurrently with the technical evaluations of possible ANS controls at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam, located near Joliet, Illinois.

As part of the NEPA scoping process, USACE is seeking input from stakeholders, tribes, and the public on the scope of issues to be addressed by the GLMRIS-Brandon Road evaluation and any significant issues related to potential actions at or near the Brandon Road site. Using input obtained during the scoping period, USACE will refine the GLMRIS-Brandon Road effort to focus on significant issues, as well as eliminate issues that are not significant from further detailed study.

The meeting will begin with a presentation followed by an oral comment period.

During the meeting, USACE will also collect written comments. Virtual participation will also be available via a web-enabled format.

Always something to be thankful for REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – There is no place more miserable to be on Thanksgiving Day than in a buffet line in a Las Vegas casino.

Trust me. I’ve been there.

Back when I was single and a reporter for the Las Vegas Sun, I found myself new in town and alone on the holiday in the middle of Sin City.

So I spent an hour and a half standing in line at the Texas Station Casino waiting for a helping of turkey and dressing.

I found myself talking to the others in line. We were each in the same gravy boat: newcomers to town who were dining alone.

We regaled each other with stories of happier Thanksgivings that didn’t have slot machines ringing in the background.

For me, those happier times were on a farm south of Galesburg munching on turkey and pumpkin pie and quizzing my mother about why we couldn’t have ham instead of turkey.

She would patiently explain that turkey was what was served on the holiday.

And I in my adolescent angst would say, “But, Mom, we’re hog farmers. Shouldn’t we have loyalty?”

At this point, she’d put a dollop of mashed potatoes on my plate in hopes of filling my mouth with spuds rather than questions.

Thanksgiving is about family.

We lost my mother last year to breast cancer.

And we miss her.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

But oddly enough, it was Thanksgiving and cancer that opened a door in my life that I never expected.

Back in 2001, my mother was scheduled for a partial mastectomy the week after Thanksgiving.

I was afraid. A bit lost. I didn’t want to lose her.

And I didn’t feel like I had much to be thankful for.

A friend seeing that I was down in the dumps set me up on a blind date – three days before Thanksgiving.

I didn’t know what to expect, but life was raw back then. We arranged to meet at a local restaurant – Chili’s. I wasn’t trying to impress.

The woman, who had just graduated from veterinary school, had kind brown eyes and an easy smile.

Her mom had breast cancer, too.

The conversation didn’t revolve around the usual first date superficial small talk.

We talked about what is really important: family.

Five hours later, the restaurant manager asked us to leave – it was closing time.

Five weeks later, we were engaged to be married.

We now have three daughters.

Sometimes, love just sneaks up on you.

It was the last thing I expected.

But one thing I learned that week of Thanksgiving: There is always something to be thankful for.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR MORE RIGOROUS MATH STANDARDS NEEDED To the Editor:

Regarding the new Common Core math standards, I’ve heard many parents ask, “What was wrong with the old way of teaching mathematics? It was good enough for us.” But here’s my argument back, and it may seem a bit harsh, but it’s necessary. The fact you’re having trouble with your child’s third-grade math and that we are 31st in mathematics is evidence that the way we were taught was not “good enough.”

It is said that mathematics is the language of the universe.

The more you understand mathematics, the more the universe becomes part of your intellectual backyard. But in addition to these lofty narratives, we must keep in mind people constantly misuse math to get our personal data, to hack our emails, to game our stock markets. They exploit our ignorance and manipulate us more when we are less aware of mathematics.

When we are mathematically illiterate, it can lead to

disastrous consequences. The inadequate mathematical models contributing to the 2008-09 financial meltdown, the NSA manipulation of math to spy on emails, changes to the consumer price index as a stealth way of raising taxes, and the list goes on. Most people have no idea the mathematics behind these formulas or processes.

So going through the world math-illiterate, thinking all you need is to be able to balance your checkbook, is equivalent to having your defenses down.

Where there is no mathematical literacy, there is no freedom.

There is no doubt that the new standards are more rigorous. They will require more of our students, our teachers and especially us parents. But we owe our children the tools and opportunity to take us back to No. 1 in math, where we belong.

USE EXISTING STRUCTURES FOR VETERANS HOUSING To the Editor:

In Joliet, there is a planned development for housing for

veterans. The project is a land acquisition design and build project. I believe the estimated cost is projected at $15 million.

Common sense and fiscal responsibility say to work out an agreement with Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet to design and remodel a portion of existing vacant hospital facility for housing for veterans. This housing for veterans could be done in the Silver Cross Hospital building that is adjacent to the new, fine Joliet VA Clinic facility.

Why not use common sense? Use what already exists and save costs by 50-70 percent. Hopefully, this concept will be accepted and implemented.

America should take a lesson from Europe and use existing structures, save these facilities and save millions of dollars.

I hope that this concept can be considered by the government decision-makers, and hopefully adopted.

At that point, it appeared North would cruise to its fifth consecutive win behind Winston and junior forward Kevin Krieger and.

Not so fast.

Led by senior guard Ralph Blakney, the Porters mounted a furious comeback before falling to the Tigers, 57-52, in a thriller Tuesday.

Krieger (14 points) and Winston sparked the Tigers to a 29-17 halftime lead. Winston tallied six of his nine points off the bench.

Krieger finished with a game-

high 14 points and had eight at the break.

“I played well tonight, but we really have to tighten up our defense,” Krieger said. “This was a big win for us, but we have to play better against Minooka on Friday.”

Winston’s 3-point play gave the Tigers (5-0) their largest lead of the game, 44-27.

“I try to bring energy to the team coming off the bench,” Winston said. “ I felt I did that tonight.”

The Porters (2-3) hit the Tigers with a 3-point barrage to get back in the game in the third quarter.

Lockport seniors Andrew Sawchuk (six points) and Kyle Gallagher buried back-to back 3-point shots to being the Porters within 46-33 after three quarters.

Lockport pulled within 53-48 after senior Delondre Taylor’s (nine

points) 3-pointer with 1:08 left in the game.

Tiger 6-foot-7 Cody Conway hit two big free throws, and Krieger came up with the play of the game with a teal with 31 seconds left.

Blakney scored nine big points for the Porters, including a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, his final one bringing the Porters to within 55-52 with four seconds left.

North’s Wofford University-bound Trevor Stumpe had 11 points.

“It’s always tough on the road, so this was a good road win for us,” North coach Rob Krahulik said.

“We played poorly tonight and must improve, or we will lose to Minooka on Friday. Kevin played well for us tonight, and Mark really gave us energy off the bench.”

Tyler Everett’s 31-point performance played a huge role in the Cougars’ 64-44 victory Tuesday in a nonconference matchup at South.

Everett now holds the school record after breaking the previous mark of 29 points. The 5-foot-10 senior went 12 for 18 from the field and hit 7 of 11 free

throws for the Cougars (3-4).

“It was a good game. We pushed it out,” Everett said.

“We had 20 turnovers in the first half. We were really upset at halftime. We knew that we had to come out and do what we needed to do. We came out, slid our feet, forced a bunch of turnovers and got steals and just finished every time.”

Forcing turnovers and rebounding were another big part in the game. In the second half, South seemed unstoppable offensively and defensively. The Cougars finished with 35 rebounds, three blocks and 24 steals.

Jaianna Brooks was another

For Central, there also were positives to the game. The Steelmen fought back within four points at halftime and outscored the Cougars 16-8 in the fourth quarter.

Tyla Childs and Morgan Jones scored in double digits for the Steelmen (3-3) with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Gerhyrah Grant had seven points and five rebounds, Ashley Hare had six points, and Montgomery Armstrong had four points and 11 rebounds.

The inability to stop South’s strong third-quarter performance is what lost the Steelmen the game. Other aspects did contribute heavily, however.

“We didn’t show up ready to play,” Central coach Brian Reed said. “We had a terrible practice yesterday, and we are

missing a couple of girls for different reasons. A couple of girls did show up tonight and played very hard. The lack of focus really showed tonight.

We made some silly turnovers, and Plainfield South had a really great game today.”

The Cougars’ defense frustrated the Steelmen, making their own coach happy.

“We’re that defensive team that’s going to frustrate you,” Cougars coach Leah Carter said. “We’re going to make you turn it over, and we’re going to score layups. That’s Tyler’s game. She scored a lot of layups tonight.”

Defense helps Morris beat Seneca in home opener

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After spending most of their Thanksgiving week in Coal City, the Morris boys basketball team was more than happy to return home Tuesday. The Redskins took on Seneca in their home opener, and the familiar surroundings worked in their favor as Morris downed the

Irish, 50-42, to improve to 4-1 on the season.

It took a little while for the Morris offense to get going, but the defense was strong all night. The Redskins led 14-9 after the first quarter and took a 28-12 lead into halftime after outscoring the Irish, 14-3, in the second quarter.

Seneca did come to life after halftime, as the Irish outscored Morris, 11-9, in the third

quarter and pulled to within 48-40 with 32 seconds left. Ben Rohder hit three 3-pointers in the fourth for Seneca (0-5) and finished with a team-high 12 points.

Evan Bjelland led Morris with 13 points, despite not scoring until late in the first quarter. He did provide three assists in the early going, helping spark the offense. Griffin Sobol gave the Redskins 12 points

from the post position, while Jake Walker scored seven and Austin Patterson delivered six. Sobol also had a team-high eight rebounds.

Morris jumped to a 5-0 lead on a basket by Jake Jurasits and a 3-pointer by Patterson.

After Brody Harty got the Irish on the board, Sobol answered with a basket. Rohder hit a 3-pointer to make it, 7-5, but Morris got a putback from

Sobol, a drive down the lane by Bjelland and a 3-pointer by Patterson to take a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Bears chose not to run the ball in the second half in Detroit, and most folks believe it played a huge role in them being noncompetitive against the Lions.

What nobody has been able to figure out is why they didn’t run the ball, what has to happen to make them do it, and what kind of effect is it having on the guys who are supposed to make the offense go.

Head coach Marc Trestman calls the plays. He’s the guy who decides whether they run the ball.

Asked earlier this week why it hasn’t happened Trestman replied, “We’re always looking to get better. I don’t think it has been the way we wanted it to be, but we’re still pushing for that. We’re making every attempt to do that.”

Actually, that’s not true.

They made just one attempt in the second half against the Lions.

Pushed on the topic, Trestman said, “As I look back, there’s a lot of different things that go into that. The only thing I could say is we didn’t run it enough. We would have liked to run it more. It didn’t happen that way, and we’ve got to move forward to Dallas.

We could have that discussion forever.

“We need to run the ball more than we did. The opportunity that we have against Dallas is to proceed forward and do a better job of putting balance in our attack, which opens up a lot of different things for us and has a residual effect on the defensive line as you move forward in the game.”

What we can tell from that answer is that Trestman gets why it’s an issue and he understands it’s important to run the ball, but he has no answers for why he’s refused to do it to date.

His quarterback gets at least one of the reasons it’s important. When asked what’s happened to the deep ball in the Bears areal attack Cutler responded, “It’s a lot of things.

Joliet vocalist makes and shares potica from his mother’s recipe

dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ever since 1996, vocalist Jim Chuporak of Joliet has carried on his mother Jeannette Chuporak’s family tradition of making and sharing potica.

Getting started was not easy, Chuporak said.

It wasn’t that Chuporak didn’t understand cooking or baking. During the years he worked as a house parent for Mooseheart Child City & School in Mooseheart, Chuporak often prepared meals. No, the challenge was in deciphering his mother’s recipe – or rather, three recipes.

One called for four pounds of nuts, another called for six, Chuporak said. One recipe listed “nine cups flour” with a “?” after the flour. Judging when the dough was sufficiently kneaded was done “by feel.”

So after Chuporak brought out his mother’s pans for baking and laid the cloth she used for rolling out the dough on the table, Chuporak compared the recipes and made a large batch of dough, kneading it until it felt right and placing it in a bowl on top of the stove to rise.

“I thought, ‘Gee, I should kill two birds with one stone,’ so I put dinner in the oven, too,” Chuporak said. “When I came back, the dough was all over the stove and the floor, and the dog was growling at it.”

After calming down with a cup of tea, Chuporak cleaned up the mess and began again.

When he got to the filling, he realized why the amount of nuts varied from recipe to recipe. Depression-era folks, Chuporak said, often skimped on the nuts because of their expense.

Chuporak likes a thick filling, so he adjusted the amount to his liking. As he became proficient in making potica,

he tried other variations. For instance, his aunt, Mary Kaiser (deceased), who taught his mother how to make potica, added crushed pineapple to her filling, which Chuporak does, too.

“Some people use pineapple preserves instead, but I never do,” Chuporak said. “I

also use honey, as opposed to sugar, for sweetening the nuts.”

If he could, Chuporak would change one thing in his potica. Chuporak wishes he could consistently prevent his dough from cracking on top during baking. But no one seems to mind, Chuporak

said, as the wonderful taste makes up for it.

“They know it’s homemade,” Chuporak said.

Making potica quickly became a large-scale operation when family and friends started asking Chuporak to make it for them, too. Chuporak also brought potica to his moth-

er’s neighbors, as his mother always had. Each year, the number of requests rose.

“In 1999, I made 138 of them,” Chuporak said.

Lately, because of multiple health concerns – Chuporak has diabetes, a pacemaker, a defibrillator and problems with his legs – Chuporak has scaled back operations. Last year, he made 50. This year, he’s limiting orders to 25. He also will keep a few in the freezer for church raffles.

Despite his health issues requiring a special diet, Chuporak will indulge in a slice of potica on Christmas morning, on the day after Christmas and on his Dec. 29 birthday, when he turns 59.

A slice of potica with a cup of coffee on those days is traditional, he said. Chuporak believes moderation, not total deprivation, is key.

“But it will be just a slice,” Chuporak said, “not half the loaf.”

This is not Jim Chuporak’s mother’s recipe, nor the exact recipe Chuporak uses. For instance, he does not use a tube pan, and he bakes his potica at 350 degrees for an hour. He also uses cake yeast and just the egg yolks, as his mother and aunt did before him.

But Chuporak used this as a guide to help decipher his mother’s notes and believes it’s a good reci-

Dough: 2½ cups milk 1 cup sugar ¼ pound butter or margarine 3 eggs, well-beaten 3 ounces yeast ½ cup warm water 9 cups flour 4 teaspoons salt Filling: 2 pounds walnuts, ground

1 cup honey 1 cup sugar (white or brown) Hot milk For dough: Heat milk to lukewarm; add sugar and butter and blend well. Add eggs. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Combine milk and yeast mixtures. Add sifted dry ingredients and knead until smooth. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk. Turn out on floured board; divide dough into two large balls.

Let rise one hour. For filling: Combine first three ingredients. Add enough milk for spreading consistency. To assemble: Cover table with large cloth; stretch dough until very thin. Spread filling; raise cloth by one side and roll.

Butter 10-inch tube pan; coil dough around and around in pan. Let rise one hour. Bake at 250 degrees for two hours or until done.

We see suit combinations at the bridge table every day. Most we have met before, but even then a few are misplayed with a fair frequency. In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump.

After West leads the heart queen and East plays the king, what should declarer do?

South has eight top tricks: one spade, one heart, three diamonds and three clubs. The ninth trick might come from hearts if they are splitting 3-2.

So South should duck the first trick.

Here, East will shift, presumably to a diamond. Declarer wins and cashes his heart ace to get the bad news.

So he needs two spade tricks. In isolation, what is the best play?

One should play first to the nine (hoping West has the jack and 10), then, if the nine loses to the 10 or jack, lead to the queen (hoping West has the king). This is exactly a 63 percent chance, but does not work here.

Instead, there is a much better play. South should cash a second high diamond and a couple of rounds of clubs. When everyone follows, declarer should take his third club and third diamond. Then he plays a spade to dummy’s nine (or covers West’s 10 with dummy’s queen). East wins and cashes a winner or two, but then must lead away from the spade king (or jack) into dummy’s ace-queen (or ace-nine).

Watch out for this endplay position with A-Q-10 or A-Q-9 opposite low cards.

Dear Doctor K: I have to have a root canal. What will happen during this procedure?

Dear Reader: You brush your teeth twice a day, but you probably don’t know their inner workings. Every tooth has roots that anchor it to the jawbone. Inside the body of the tooth and inside its roots is a hollow central chamber, or canal.

And inside that hollow chamber is an inner pulp containing a network of nerves, blood vessels and tissues. The pulp helps nourish your tooth. The nerves in the pulp are the reason that injury or damage near the pulp causes pain.

Pulp damage can cause a range of symptoms, including tooth sensitivity, pain, swelling or tenderness of the gums. Pulp damage can also cause cracked or discolored teeth, nerve death and infection.

Among the common causes of pulp damage are tooth decay and advanced gum disease, which can produce infection in and around the teeth. A bacterial infection in the pulp usually kills the nerves, and the infection can spread to the gum and mouth tissues and beyond.

Root canal therapy removes damaged or diseased pulp and seals off the inner chamber that normally contains it.

This prevents the infection from spreading.

The process usually takes two to three office visits.

During the first visit, the endodontist (a dentist who specializes in problems with dental pulp and nerves) will inject a local anesthetic.

He or she will drill a hole in your tooth and remove the decayed or diseased pulp.

The endodontist will clean the root canal, removing bacteria, tooth fragments and tissue. An antiseptic (and some-

The root canal and pulp chamber will be dried, then filled with a permanent filling material. This material replaces the pulp. (I’ve put an illustration of how a root canal procedure is done on my website, askdoctork.com.)

After the root canal treatment is complete, your dentist will place an amalgam (a filling) or composite restoration, a crown, or both on your tooth. This will protect and strengthen your tooth and help maintain its structure. Premolars and molars in particular should be crowned after root canal therapy to prevent the tooth from breaking.

The best way to keep pulp damage at bay is to brush your teeth and floss twice a day. And don’t forget regular visits to your dentist for more thorough cleanings.

I’ve had several root canals. Before my first one, I was very apprehensive.

So many people (including plenty who’ve never had it) talk about root canal surgery as if it’s terribly painful. They say things like, “Seeing the Red Sox end up at the bottom of the division hurt me less than a root canal!”

In my experience, a root canal doesn’t hurt any more than other dental procedures. But seeing the Red Sox go from first to worst in one year, on the other hand – that really hurt.

Dear Abby: I was divorced three years ago and have had a boyfriend, “Roger,” for a year and a half. He is seven years younger, and he’s intrigued with women on the Internet.

He saves tons of photos of these girls on his cellphone.

These ladies are “perfect.”

They have big breasts and curvaceous behinds, etc. I have had two kids. I’m not overweight and I exercise and keep myself in shape, but I have a “Mom body.”

Roger has told me he loves my body and everything about me. But the feeling I get is that he wishes I looked like those girls.

I have asked Roger not to save these photos because it makes me insecure. If he’s going to look, fine. But saving them is another thing. He promised me he wouldn’t, but some of them are still there. So he not only makes me feel like a fatty, but he lies to me, too. He has more pictures of other girls than he does of me.

Now I no longer feel comfortable undressing in front of him. I leave my clothes half-on and turn out the lights when we have sex. He has made me unable to stand myself. What do I do? – Can’t
