JOLIET – Tuesday is expected to be cloudy with a chance of light rain or snow following a dreary Monday filled with high wind gusts and freezing rain.

Meteorologists are expecting the rest of the week in Will County to not be as hectic as Monday, with a 20 percent chance of light rain or snow Tuesday morning and high temperatures in the mid-30s.

Gusts may be up to 30 mph.

The sleet and snow Monday made for hazardous driving conditions.

Illinois State Police officials said there were about six or seven weather-related car accidents on interstate roadways in the morning, and that number climbed up to almost 30 by late afternoon.

Retired Joliet bishop’s funeral ceremonies are set for Tuesday

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The body of Bishop Joseph Imesch will be laid to rest Tuesday at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet.

Imesch will lie in state from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the cathedral, 604 N. Raynor Ave., Diocese of Joliet Director of Communications Edward Flavin said in a statement.

The Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow the Mass at Resurrection Cemetery, 200 W. Romeo Road.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Fred C. Dames Funeral Homes.

Imesch died last week after serving 27 years as the third bishop of the Diocese of Joliet. He retired in 2006 at age 75, but had been serving as bishop emeritus up to his death.

He attended parish elementary school and went to high school and college at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. Imesch earned a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in Rome during the 1950s and completed his studies in 1970

at Gregorian University in Rome.

He first served after ordination at St. Charles Parish in Detroit as associate pastor and secretary. He was named pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Farmington, Michigan, where he served from 1971 to 1977, during which he was named as regional bishop of northwest Detroit.

During his tenure as the Joliet diocese bishop from 1979 to 2006, Imesch worked with community leaders to create the Housing Foundation of Will County, and established the Daybreak Center and Joliet Diocesan Catholic Education Foundation.

Imesch was known for supporting women’s and gay rights in the church, but he also was criticized for his role in transferring priests who were accused of sexually abusing children, and for withholding information from authorities about those priests.

District 89 officials use tailored assessments, initiatives

This is the second story in a three-day series exploring the revitalization of Fairmont School District 89 through financial reform, academic growth and community engagement.

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – Twice a year at Fairmont School District 89, families are brought together to share a meal and learn about how to help their children succeed in the classroom.

Kathy Robinson was among dozens of parents sitting with their children at the school cafeteria Dec. 10 for Parent Literacy Nights, where attendees learned how to prepare their children for a future in science, technology, mathematics or engineering from Blue 1647, an entrepreneurship and technology innovation organization.

“You get different ideas on how to help children be better for the future,” Robinson said.

Parent Literacy Nights is one of several initiatives started under Superintendent Sonya Whitaker’s leadership to improve student achievement.

When she came in 2010 to the district – located in an economically distressed community – she decided to not only implement several programs but also to use a different method of assessing student progress.

“We’re implementing nontraditional approaches to involving and educating the community and our students,” she said.

Under the Illinois Standards Achievement Test – now replaced with the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers exam – the percentage of students meeting and exceeding standards always has been low.

In 2002, the ISAT composite percentage of District 89 students meeting and exceeding standards was 25 percent, compared with 63 percent statewide. The scores fluctuated over the years – along with statewide scores – until they reached their highest in 2012 at 60 percent.

However, Whitaker took issue with how the scores were calculated in 2013, when Illinois raised scores for pass-

exceeding ISAT standards in District 89 was 31 percent.

“I saw a need for districtwide assessment because I see the state keeps yo-yoing back and forth on what assessment measure most accurately gives them information,” Whitaker said.

Lockport to improve infrastructure, beautify city City officials excited to eventually announce ‘big, big deal’ new businesses

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Lockport city officials plan for more infrastructure and beautification projects next year along with welcoming some new major businesses.

City Administrator Ben Benson said that next year, the city will have a major emphasis on infrastructure projects.

The Lockport City Council approved a Capitol Improvement Plan in 2014 that proposed spending about $50 million from 2014 to 2020 on road construction, street resurfacing, and water and sewer projects.

“That’ll be a huge part of what keeps us busy,” he said.

Benson said he also expects construction of the Second

Street bridge to occur next year.

He said the city is close to making major announcements on coming businesses. He said he is excited to eventually reveal what they will be, but Ben he declined to Benson name them yet.

The businesses will be a “big, big deal” for Lockport, he said.

“I think the community has felt underserved from retail and restaurant opportunities,” he said.

Third Ward Alderman Darren Deskin said the council and administration have worked hard to bring activity to Lockport. He said he is excited about the development

taking place in 2016.

“Lockport may be one of the few towns in the U.S. that has residential, commercial and retail development all happening at the same time,” Deskin said.

This year, Darren Lockport rolled Deskin out a beautification plan for the city that includes enforcing code compliance for residents not keeping up their properties.

The city is planning to spend about $180,000 over three budget years starting next year for about 10 new signs throughout the city and new flower plantings in street medians at Lockport’s main gateways.

Darren Deskin Lockport Third Ward alderman Deskin said fining people is not the point of the beautification plan.

“We don’t want to fine anybody. If properties are in need of improvement, let’s get them improved, that’s all,” he said.

He said there are many properties in the entrances coming into Lockport that have been in a dilapidated

state for decades.

In addition, Benson said there will be street surface improvements next year. As the Illinois Department of Transportation comes to the city to do some projects, city officials want to take that opportunity to not only replace water mains but also to improve the appearance of the downtown.

“We really want to set the bar for how the downtown will look,” he said.

New Lenox plans for Route 30 redevelopment next year Village also planning to extend Nelson Rd., continue tax rebate

Village officials have planned to demolish several run-down buildings to make way for new commercial development and bring life to Route 30.

Mayor Tim Baldermann said crews have taken down a building that once housed a dry cleaning business as well as buildings that were home to the Pit Stop bar and House of Hughes restaurant.

Recently, the tanks were taken out of an old BP gas station that will make way for new development, he said.

“We’re looking to continue to redevelop up and down Route 30,” Baldermann said.

“I think it’s very exciting to be involved in something like this,” she said.

This year, it reached one to acquire the last piece of property necessary to extend and realign Nelson Road between West Haven Avenue Annette and West IlliBowden nois Highway.

The village has planned a 1.2-mile extension of Nelson Road.

He also said the village hopes to continue its tax rebate program without impact from state budget issues.

This year, village trustees approved a resolution for a 70 percent refund to residents for New Lenox’s portion of the 2014 property taxes.

However, it had a disclaimer on the forms mailed to residents stating the percentage may be adjusted if the state

reduces New Lenox’s share of state funds.

Ever since New Lenox received home rule status with a successful referendum in 2008, promising residents a refund on property taxes, the portion residents have been receiving has increased steadily.

“It’s the highest it’s been,” Baldermann said.

In 2010, 40 percent of the property taxes were rebated; and last year, residents got back 65 percent of what was paid to the village.

Measure that benefits domestic violence victims effective Jan. 1

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Domestic abuse victims will benefit from a new law in 2016 that requires utility companies to temporarily waive startup fees and deposit requirements for housing.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, is one of the several lawmakers who sponsored and pushed for Senate Bill 1645’s passage this year.

Under the new law, which takes effect Jan. 1, victims of domestic violence will be given

more time to pay utility bills, as utility companies will be required to defer new resident startup fees for victims for 60 days, giving individuals trying to escape an abusive situation more time to get settled.

Walsh said utility companies temporarily would waive the deposit requirements normally charged to applicants with poor credit.

Sandy Metroz, development coordinator for Lamb’s Fold Center for Women and Children, said that while the nonprofit welcomes the new legislation, clients won’t be adequately served until a state budget is in place.

The nonprofit is waiting on significant grant dollars from the state while the six-month impasse continues, she said.

“It’s been very hard,” Metroz said. “Right now, we are depending on regular donations from the community.”

The Joliet-based nonprofit, which provides housing to

homeless single women and their children, has been forced to hold off providing financial assistance for most new clients seeking housing.

With the lack of state funding, Lamb’s Fold also cannot provide new housing arrangements unless a client in one of seven homes move out, Metroz said. In the interim, Lamb’s Fold is helping as many clients as possible in other ways, she said.

Lamb’s Fold originally started in 1984 as a maternity home for pregnant and unmarried women in rural Will County.

In the early 1990s, the agency moved to Joliet.

To be eligible for utility fees to be waived under the law, a domestic violence victim must have an order of protection in place or be certified as a victim by medical or law enforcement personnel, a state’s attorney, the attorney general or a domestic violence shelter, according to the bill.

QUICK NEWS Cancer research coming to south suburbs

TINLEY PARK – Senator Michael E. Hastings, D-Tinley Park, announced Monday the strategic partnership between the University of Illinois Cancer Center and Governors State University to perform research aimed at reducing cancer-related health disparities in Chicago’s south suburbs.

The University of Illinois Cancer Center and Governors State University recently received a four year, $1.5 million dollar grant from the National Cancer Institute which enables the partnership to provide training for independent research and to support minority undergraduate and graduate students at Governors State who are interested in health disparities research.

The grant also supports a breast cancer pilot project, which will test the efficacy of a mobile device app that lets primary care physicians screen women for elevated risk of breast cancer and provides information on genetic counseling. The research team will determine whether the use of the app influences women to make recommended follow-up appointments with genetic counselors.

Romeoville board OKs pact for Blain’s annexation, incentives

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Plans for the new Blain’s Farm and Fleet are moving quickly, with the Romeoville Village Board acting Wednesday to approve the annexation of almost 30 acres and the incentive agreement for the discount store.

Construction of the 122,000-square-foot store is planned to start in March at the southeast corner of Weber and Airport roads.

“They’re closing on the property this week,” Mayor John Noak said Monday. “Everyone is very excited about it.”

Village trustees approved the annexation agreement with several zoning exceptions, clarifications and stormwater variance re quests.

the money it will spend to improve the intersection of Airport and Weber roads.

“It’s very similar to agreements we’ve had previously with the other two major corners,” Noak said, referencing the Target to the north and the Wal-Mart to the west.

The incentive agreement allows Blain’s to collect a sales tax reimbursement of 50 percent up to a total reimbursement of $4.91 million.

If Blain’s develops one of the outlots in the retail center where it will be located – and which it will develop – into a table service or quick casual restaurant, it also can collect half of the sales tax of that operation up to $100,000.

The retail center will contain up to seven outlots for other businesses. Prohibited businesses are amusement centers, laundromats, pawn and auto title loan shops, quick loan centers and banks, currency exchanges, tattoo or body piercing parlors, cigarette or tobacco stores, and dollar stores.

Noak said the incentives would help Blain’s recapture

The Romeoville store also will be a new look for Blain’s.

“To be honest, this is still so new, some of it is still going to be in progress of changing day by day,” Blain’s spokeswoman Kristin Michelson said Monday.

Externally, the store will incorporate a modern barn, with slanted roofs.

Michelson said Blain’s has been working on customer flow in the store and making navigation easier for customers.

A drive-thru on the south side of the western-facing building will present a new service allowing customers looking to quickly buy a popular item, such as road salt or fertilizer, to order and have the product loaded without leaving their car.

“We know there are other things we want to add, but we’re waiting for the final layout,” Michelson said.

Jamie Walsh, 30, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, improper lane use and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to state police.

Walsh was driving a 1997 Plymouth Neon that rolled over at 7:21 p.m. at Route 171 and Nobes Avenue, State Po-

lice Sgt. Scott Angus said. Her passenger, Joseph O. Essary, 33, was ejected from the vehicle.

Lockport Township firefighters arrived and found Essary “trapped under the vehicle with [Walsh] sitting on a nearby bench.

Jamie Walsh The driver was combative,” Fire Chief Dave Skoryi said.

Firefighters used cribbing supports and low-pressure air bags to extricate Essary and called for a helicopter, but weather conditions prevented the flight, Skoryi said.

Essary and Walsh were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. The Will County Coroner’s Office reported that Essary died at 9:14 p.m.

Walsh was booked into the county jail about 12:30 a.m.

Sunday.

According to jail records, Walsh was arrested by Will County sheriff’s police in April 2011 on a charge of domestic battery.

Walsh was subject to a restraining order from Essary and several of his relatives in January 2013, Will County court records stated, but he asked to be removed from her no-contact list three months later.

JOLIET – A 48-year-old woman allegedly stabbed her young husband’s hand Saturday after destroying his hat, police said.

Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said police were called at 1:43 p.m. when a 24-year-old man came into Pres-

ence Saint Joseph Medical Center with a deep stab wound to his left hand.

“He said he and his wife had been arguing at their apartment in the 400 block of Morgan Street when she grabbed and started cutting up his hat,” Gregory said. “When he got too close, she purposely stabbed him in his hand.”

The victim wrapped towels around his hand and drove himself to the hospital, where he received several stitches for the wound, which was not life-threatening, Gregory said.

According to Gregory, officers went to the apartment to interview Colette A. Sheward, who allegedly claimed she had cut the man’s hand

accidentally while she was cutting the hat. Sheward was arrested on charges of domestic battery and aggravated battery, and she was booked into the Will County jail.

Gregory said police took a longblade knife from the apartment as evidence. Police reports did not indicate the kind of hat Sheward allegedly shredded.

Joliet police: Woman gets spitting mad while at Saint Joseph hospital

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet woman reportedly punched one nurse, spat on another and then spat on a police officer Sunday at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

At 1:14 a.m., Laqundra J. Archer, 23, became agitated while awaiting treatment and attempted to walk behind the nurses station, according to Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

“When she was stopped from going in that area, she struck a 60-year-old male nurse

in the jaw with a closed fist and spit in a 43-year-old female nurse’s face before she was restrained Laqundra by security,” J. Archer Gregory said.

When a Joliet police officer arrived, Archer told him she wanted to go to jail then spat on the back of his neck, Gregory said.

Gregory said Archer then declined medical treatment and was placed in a collar that prevented her spit from reaching anyone else.

“On the ride to the station, she informed the officer she would not go along with any part of the booking process, so she was taken directly to the county jail,” Gregory said.

Archer, of the 1200 block of Hague Street, was booked into the Will County jail on charges of aggravated battery and obstructing justice.

According to jail records, she was locked up for eight months after being arrested

by New Lenox police following an aggravated battery incident in April 2013 at Silver Cross Hospital.

Students who attended the conferences said they came away from the experience changed, Whitaker said.

“They said they saw images of people who look like them – because I purposefully selected people that were diverse in nature, diverse backgrounds – doing things ... that my boys thought they never could do,” she said.

Increased parent involvement has been key for academic achievement at District 89.

Whitaker launched a district initiative called Parents Count Pick 2 to fuel more involvement. The goal of the initiative is to have at least 80 percent of students have a parent attend a district-hosted event at least twice a year.

“The research suggests the more people are involved in their children’s academic career, the more likely the child will succeed academically,” she said.

Parents can pick two of six events offered by the district to attend, such as Parent Literacy

Thank you to JD Wright, MD and the staffs of Salem Village and the Joliet Area Community Hospice that were there for Jim. Today, as we are saying “goodbye” with the heaviest of hearts, Jim is hearing Alex calling, “Hello Dad!.

BEATRICE C. MATUSZEWSKI Beatrice “Bea” C. Matuszewski (nee Wruk), age 90, of Goose Lake, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2015, at her home with her family by her side. Bea was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is preceded in death by her husband and best friend of 59 years, George; an infant grandson; father, Frank Wruk and mother, Mary (Wruk) Radomski; brothers, Frank (the late Lorraine) and Daniel (Genevieve) Wruk; sisters, Adeline Jolliffe and JoAnn St. Angelo.

She is survived by her two children, Greg (Robin) of Shorewood, Illinois and Lauren (Jack) Witkowski of Goose Lake; grandsons, Allen (Jenny) of Channahon, Illinois, Brian (Michelle) of Maryville, Illinois; and three great-grandchildren, Nella, Summer and Caleb Matusze-

wski; two sisters, Gloria (Richard) Yakich of Shorewood, Illinois and Patricia Krause of Portland, Oregon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Beatrice was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois and was previously employed at Visking Corporation and as a sales associate at Gaylord’s Department Store.

Summers on the pontoon boat with her family made for lasting memories, however her greatest joy came from cooking and baking for her family and will be forever remembered for her homemade banana cake. She was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Joliet and sang in the choir. Bea was also a member of the Mariner’s Society.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and thanks to the staff of the Joliet Area Community Hospice, who assisted in taking care of Bea and in supporting her family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joliet Area Community Hospice in Bea’s name.

A celebration of Beatrice’s life will begin on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, with prayers in the funeral home chapel at 9:30 a.m. then driving in procession to Holy Cross Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Joliet. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Meadowlark Lemon, the “clown prince” of basketball’s barnstorming Harlem Globetrotters, whose blend of hook shots and humor brought joy to millions of fans around the world, has died. He was 83.

Lemon’s wife and daughter confirmed to the team that he died Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona, Globetrotters spokesman Brett Meister said Monday. Meister did not know the cause of death.

While skilled enough to play professionally, Lemon instead wanted to entertain, his dream of playing for the Globetrotters hatched after watching a newsreel of the all-black team at a cinema house when he was 11.

Lemon ended up becoming arguably the team’s most popular player.

Advocates: Chicago police crisis training has languished

CHICAGO – In the wake of another police shooting, Mayor Rahm Emanuel called for an immediate review of how the Chicago Police Department trains officers to respond to calls involving people in crisis or with mental health problems.

But advocates for what’s known as crisis intervention team training say Chicago’s program has been “starved” of resources, with only about 15 percent of officers completing the 40-hour course. Advocates say they tried to get meetings with Emanuel early in his first term to stress the importance of the training and ask the city to invest more in it, but were ignored. Illinois’ budget crisis also created a lapse, not just in Chicago but elsewhere.

The issue resurfaced last weekend, after officers responding to a domestic disturbance shot and killed a 19-year-old man and a 55-yearold woman. The deaths of Bettie Jones – who police say was accidentally hit by gunfire – and Quintonio LeGrier occurred just weeks after the Department of Justice opened a civil-rights investigation into Chicago police practices.

SPRINGFIELD – Most of the management team at the Illinois State Museum has retired or taken other jobs amid the museum’s closure because of a lack of a state budget.

Museum board chairman Guerry Suggs said only three or four members of the management team would be available to return should the museum reopen. He said the others have retired or gotten new jobs.

Union employees working for the museum have spent their time doing curation work and other duties since the museum was closed. A lawsuit filed by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees temporarily halted layoffs of about 150 people at the museum and other state agencies.

A bill designed to keep the museum open has been passed by the state House and Senate, and Suggs said the bill was delivered to Rauner on Dec. 9.

But Suggs said it’s unlikely the museum would reopen without a new budget.

Suburban funeral home to serve drinks at wakes

WHEELING – A suburban Chicago funeral home has obtained a liquor permit that will allow mourners to toast departed loved ones with alcoholic drinks.

Kolssak Funeral Home in Wheeling recently received a liquor license from the village of Wheeling. Owner Jon Kolssak told the Chicago Tribune he believes his funeral home is the first in Illinois to obtain a special use permit allowing it to serve alcohol.

He said families were asking if they could have alcohol at memorial events.

The Wisconsin-based National Funeral Directors Association said Kolssak’s move to offer special packages including liquor and catered food is part of a broader trend in which funeral homes are taking steps

to accommodate receptions held in conjunction with a wake, funeral or memorial service.

Metra: 2 dead, 4 others hurt in traincar crash in Chicago

CHICAGO – A spokesman for Chicago’s commuter train service said two people were killed and four others injured when a Metra train struck a car on Chicago’s southwest side.

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said Monday night that an 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old woman died from their injuries.

He said the injured included a 3-year-old male, a 17-year-old male and a 17-year-old female.

Their injuries weren’t considered life-threatening. Gillis said a 20-year-old male was in serious condition.

The spokesman said that the 17-year-old male was driving.

Gillis said the cause of the crash

is still under investigation.

Coroner planning autopsy after fatal mobile home fire

HARRISBURG – Authorities in southern Illinois said an autopsy was scheduled to find out the identity of a woman pulled from a burning mobile home in Harrisburg.

The Evansville Courier and Press said the Saline County coroner planned the autopsy Monday evening. Saline County Coroner Jerry Watson said the woman was the only person in the mobile home when it caught fire early Saturday.

Watson said the victim’s identity and an official cause of death should be released after the autopsy. The cause is under investigation. The newspaper said firefighters who responded found flames and smoke pouring from the structure.

CLEVELAND –A grand jury Monday declined to indict a white rookie police officer in the killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, a black youngster who was shot while playing with what turned out to be a pellet gun.

In explaining the decision, Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty said it was “indisputable” that the boy was drawing the pistol from his waistband when he was gunned down.

McGinty said Tamir was trying to either hand the weapon over to police or show them it wasn’t real, but the officer and his partner had no way of knowing that.

Tamir’s family condemned the decision but echoed the prosecutor in urging those disappointed to express themselves “peacefully and democratically.”

Group attacks Nigerian city, town, 80 killed

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Boko Haram Islamic extremists struck a city and a town in northeastern Nigeria with rocket-propelled grenades and multiple suicide bombers Monday, killing at least 80 people, witnesses said.

In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, at least 30 were killed and more than 90 wounded in overnight blasts and shootouts, and another 20 died in a bombing outside a mosque at dawn Monday, said Muhammed Kanar, area coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency.

Record Amazon shipping, Christmas Eve deliveries

TRENTON, N.J. – Online retailer Amazon has been a prime beneficiary of more consumers doing their holiday shopping online and procrastinating.

Amazon Prime, the company’s $99-a-year loyalty program that includes unlimited free two-day shipping, gained 3 million new members in the third week of December alone. Meanwhile, the number of Prime members shopping via mobile more than doubled this holiday season, Amazon said Monday.

Christmas Eve was the biggest day yet for deliveries by the company’s Prime Now service, which now offers free twohour delivery to more than 20 metropolitan areas. When Prime Now launched last year, it only delivered within Manhattan.

Seattle-based Amazon also said it shipped a record number of items worldwide for the holidays.

She and nine others were enjoying a holiday gathering when winds began to rattle her home in suburban Dallas.

They all dashed into closets and suffered only bumps and bruises, but Gordon’s roof was torn away and her house destroyed.

“I just got divorced, and this is all I had,” she said.

With rain all day Sunday keeping people away, residents worked on a dreary and frigid Monday to salvage what they could, with the American Red Cross distributing items such as tarps, rakes and work gloves to help them.

At least 11 people died and dozens were injured in the tornadoes that swept through the Dallas area Saturday. Snow from New Mexi-

co through the Midwest, plus flooding in Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois, added to the succession of severe weather events across the country in the last week that led to about four dozen deaths.

The storm system brought heavy snow, ice and blustery winds to several states in the nation’s midsection.

More than 2,100 flights across the U.S. were canceled Monday – more than half of them at Chicago’s two main airports – and 3,700 were delayed, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. A typical day sees about 150 cancellations and 4,000 delays.

Highways turned icy and treacherous in New Mexico, while Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin declared a state of emergency after blizzard conditions affected parts of the state and heavy rains fell.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the body of a 22-year-old man was recovered in northern Oklahoma but a second man, the lead singer of the country-rock

band Backroad Anthem, was still missing after the two went duck hunting and their boat capsized. The body of a 36-year-old man who tried to cross a creek in his pickup near the town of Arpelar was also recovered Monday afternoon, the patrol said.

Officials in Arkansas said a 31-year-old man died in a storm-related drowning.

Several inches of rain caused flooding in Illinois and Missouri, where Gov. Jay Nixon also declared a state of emergency. Nixon said the state’s death toll from days of pounding rainfall has risen to 10, and he expects that number to grow.

Paying it forward As we approach the end of the year, it is a good time to review our accomplishments and look forward to next year’s opportunities.

To the Editor: It has been a tumultuous year in Illinois.

The state is operating without a budget. Illinois’ already bad crediting rating has sunk even deeper and the state’s pension liability continues to grow.

There are many items we need for Illinois’ New Year’s Resolutions list. One important item we should not forget, however, is the need for lawsuit reform.

The need for lawsuit reform in Illinois should be self-evident but for those who still do not get it – here is your sign. The annual “Judicial Hellholes” report from the American Tort Reform Foundation named Madison County one of the “Five Worst Judicial Hellholes” in the country.

For far too long, Illinois has been a magnet for personal injury lawyers and plaintiffs from all over the country who clog our courts with junk lawsuits that have nothing to do with Illinois, all in the hopes of striking it rich playing our state’s plaintiff-friendly lawsuit lottery.

These greedy personal injury lawyers have turned the “Land of Lincoln” into the “Land of Lawsuits.”

The solution is lawsuit reform. Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed common sense lawsuit reforms as part of his “Turn Around Agenda.” Governor Rauner understands these reforms work.

Illinoisans should contact their legislators and ask them if they will stand with the personal injury lawyers, who are the only ones who profit from this unfair system, or the small businesses and individual citizens who are far too frequently targets of unfair frivolous lawsuits and are made to pay for personal injury lawyer greed.

After going through a few difficult years where those qualities were seen less frequently, the Celtics are finally starting to get some of their swagger back.

Providence followed a 10thplace showing at the Dvorak Invitational with an impressive dual meet win Monday over a Lincoln-Way Central squad it will see again in the

getting after it and getting them. Our kids are coming out and performing and now it’s just about getting all of the pieces of the puzzle to come together, and we’re starting to get there.”

University Lab overcomes Joliet Central

By JEFF DE GRAW Herald-News Correspondent RICHTON PARK – University Lab School of Chicago used a 22-14 third quarter run to erase an eight-point Joliet Central lead and used that momentum to claim a 69-65 victory in the Rich South 43rd Big Dipper boys basketball tournament Monday evening.

The Maroons used a 12-2 run at the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth to take a 55-51 lead over the Steelmen.

Malik Fuller (18 points) and Taquan Sims (13 points) put Central back on top, 5755, with 5:04 to play. U-High scored 10 of the next 12 points and took a 66-59 lead with three minutes left. The Steelmen could not recover, getting to within 68-65 with 49 seconds left.

“You can’t give up 42 second-half points and expect to win,” Central coach Jeff Corcoran said. “We talk all the time about the five guys working together on the floor.

We panicked tonight when

things weren’t going well.

“I know it’s cliche, but it’s the little things that count. We let one slip away tonight. We had great energy in the first half and played well. It’s still early, we are in December and hopefully we can look back on this as a learning experience.”

With 3 seconds left, Benson received a pass 4 feet from the hoop. After almost shuffling his feet, Benson ran over an Indians defender and then laid in a basket that appeared not to have beaten the buzzer.

Overtime, right? Not so fast. The three officials looked at each other and made the belated call, that Benson’s basket did beat the buzzer. Final score: Hinsdale South 52.

Jonny Butler’s two free throws gave the Indians a 47-38 lead with 6:37 left. Numerous Minooka turnovers brought the Hornets back.

With 2:35 left, Hinsdale South’s Sean McCormack (eight points, 10 rebounds, three blocks, three steals) stole the ball and fed Diamond Anderson for a layup and the Hornets were within 47-46. After another Indians turnover, Benson gave the Hornets their first lead of the game, 48-47.

McCormack picked up another steal and hit Anderson for another layup and a 50-47 lead. Roberts struck from long range to tie the game at 50 with 14 seconds left.

“It was a good game. Last year we had problems finishing games and that happened again to us tonight.” Jonny Butler said. “This really hurts.”

The Indians will face Providence (3-7) in their third game of the tournament at 6 p.m.

Seneca’s quest for Marseilles title ends

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent MARSEILLES – Seneca’s quest to do at its new holiday event what it did four times at its old one ended – at least in 2015 – Monday with a 48-31 loss to second-seeded Flanagan-Cornell at the seventh annual Marseilles Holiday Tournament.

The four-time Plano Christmas Classic champion will continue the tournament in the fifth-place bracket at 5 p.m.

Tuesday.

“I would hate to win the Marseilles Christmas Tournament and not win a regional,” Seneca coach Russell Witte said. “That would make this pointless.

So that’s not the goal – to come in and win these tournaments. It’s to get better every single day, and I thought for a stretch we did that today.”

Seneca did not score in the fourth quarter until Owen Barnett made a free throw with 21 seconds to play. Two early 3s from Barth had helped the Falcons long since erase any doubt about the outcome.

“Lack of communication on defense,” Witte said when asked what was missing outside of the second quarter.

“We came in with a game plan to keep (Barth), maybe the best shooter in the state, off the 3-point line. In the third quarter, we let him stay on the 3-point line, without much pressure on him.”

Barth scored 19 points to lead all players, and Bertsche was close behind with 16. Baker was the only Seneca player in double figures with 10 points.

RICHTON PARK – On Monday, it was quarterfinal action between Bolingbrook and Lincoln-Way Central at the Rich South 43rd annual Big Dipper Tournament.

In a game of big scoring runs, Central needed overtime to beat the Raiders, 71-67.

The Knights (8-1) will play Thornton in a 7 p.m. semifinal Tuesday. Bolingbrook will play Leo at 3 p.m.

The Raiders scored the first eight points of the game before a 3-pointer from Jarret Gmazel got the Knights on the board with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Bolingbrook then scored the next three points on a Dev-

Jake Schutter, hit a jumper to pull the Celtics within 51-46 with 3:17 left. Schutter struck again at the 2:20 mark with a 3-point bomb, pulling Providence within 51-49.

points) hit a free throw, followed by a pair from Mike Drew (18 points, nine rebounds), giving the Celtics (37) their last lead at 52-51 with 1:07 left.

Lockport falls to Danville in Pontiac opener SUBMITTED REPORTS PONTIAC – Lockport opened its bid in the 85th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament on Monday morning with a 41-40 loss to Danville.

The Porters led, 3-0, on Wade Walder’s 3-pointer, but after Danville went ahead 4-3, the Vikings never trailed again. Their largest lead was 23-14 late in the first half.

Don’t read too much into win It would be a real mistake to try to take too much from the Bears’ 26-21 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

It was big because it snapped a three-game skid in which the Bears had gotten progressively worse each week, and even bigger because it gave last year’s 5-11 team its sixth win this year with an all-new coaching staff and front office.

When you’re climbing from the bottom up, progress is huge, and Sunday was a big step.

But if you start assuming the Bears solved all kinds of personnel questions with nice performances from so many youngsters, you can delude yourself into a real fool’s paradise.

The Bucs also are a 6-9 team that has lost three straight and four of its past five, all to losing teams.

The Bears won in large part because the Bucs gave them three really bad turnovers.

The Bears also caught a break when, trailing 7-0 less than two minutes into the second quarter, Jay Cutler had a pass tipped by Gerald McCoy and intercepted by William Gholston at the Bears’ 39 and returned to the 15, but it was overturned by a Bucs facemask penalty, allowing the Bears to drive 68 yards to a game-tying score.

That said, there was much to feel good about.

General manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox were here almost two full months before they confirmed whether Cutler would even be a Bear this year.

Both Jeremy Langford and Matt Forte played really well in Tampa behind an excellent run-blocking effort from the offensive line.

But the perception that Ka’Deem Carey’s recent success in the red zone and short-yardage situations has made Forte expendable when his contract expires at the end of the season is a dangerous conclusion.

Carey touched the ball once in the first three quarters – his 1-yard touchdown run – and then again for his touchdown reception on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Carey’s remaining six carries for 15 yards came only after Forte was out with a back problem and Langford was gassed during the final 6:28 of the game.

Carey still is a long way from a comfortable enough insurance policy to send Forte packing.

As good as the line was on the run – particularly Vladimir Ducasse and Kyle Long – they were mediocre in pass protection, and Ducasse is a real liability in that facet of the game.

Slaying dragons of discouragement with multimedia Pediatric occupational therapist empowers kids with disabilities

PLAINFIELD – Not all dragons attack with breaths of fire. In fact, most don’t.

They attack with shyness, anaphylaxis, impaired motor skills, disrupted sensory processing, speech impediments and even big ears.

Just ask Joseph Bauer of Frankfort, the DJ who tours with Stacey Glorioso, a Plainfield-based pediatric occupational therapist, as part of her “dragon crew.”

Glorioso also is the author of “Joshua’s Dragon,” the story of an autistic boy who beats his fear of loud noises by pretending the fear is a dragon he’s slayed.

Bauer, who recently finished his tour with Atlantic Records for his album “Illuminate,” according to a news release, said other kids used to make fun of his oversized ears.

But Bauer, the person who creates the sound effects for interactive readings of “Joshua’s Dragon” at school assemblies and then talks to kids about conquering his own dragon, has stood that fear on its head.

“My dad always told me, ‘Tell them you can hear better than they can,’ ” Bauer said. “And now I actually work in audio.”

It’s that kind of attitude that inspired Glorioso to write “Joshua’s Dragon.”

Inspired by young heroes

During her 16 years of practice, Glorioso said her young clients have constantly inspired her with their motivation and courage in the face of disabilities: the deaf child who learns to talk; the wheelchair-bound twins who learn to play basketball despite cerebral palsy.

Even Glorioso’s own son, Grant, 11, has a severe peanut allergy, which made him fearful of stepping away from Glorioso. But armed with knowledge of

But Glorioso didn’t write “Joshua’s Dragon” just for them, she said. She wrote it for everyone else, too.

“I always thought that with this push for inclusion, we just never got enough education on autism and cerebral palsy and Down syndrome,” Glorioso said.

“And kids have to accept [kids with disabilities], not realizing the dragons these kids face each day.”

But the book is for more than showing elementary school children the difficulties kids with disabilities battle, such as navigating social situations and learning to walk, talk and eat. It’s to acknowledge them as heroes so even kids without disabilities can overcome their own Achilles heel.

“It’s really about recognizing that we are more similar than different,” Glorioso said.

Dragon tours

Glorioso released “Joshua’s Dragon” in August and began touring in October.

A tour stop is a 45-minute upbeat school assembly, she said. Glorioso estimates that her tours – so far – have reached 10,000 children in preschool through sixth grade.

Sean Smith, principal at Grande Park Elementary School in Plainfield, said Glorioso’s presentation is the most inspiring he’s seen in the four years he’s been with the school. The kids were thoroughly engaged, he said, and they bought books.

“She really inspired the kids to do some self-reflection and to think about their own selves,” Smith said. “She gave them that extra boost and motivation to continue to work hard, and the message that hard work does pay off.”

Glorioso’s dragon presentation is part recorded reading, part music and part video of other dragon slayers. One video presenter is Alyssa Gialamas of Naperville, who was born with arthrogryposis, a disorder that affects the use of joints and muscles, according to the Team USA website.

Team USA in swimming at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, where she came in fifth place, the website stated.

Gialamas was happy to make the video.

“I really liked the story, and I really liked the underlying theme,” said Gialamas, now 20 and a communications major at the University of Maryland. “Everyone has dragons, but in order to conquer them, you have to go through stuff.”

Despite her upbeat and uplifting exhortations, and despite the life lessons Glorioso brings home to her own children – who include Genna, 9, and Griffin, 4 – Glorioso admits providing occupation therapy to youth with disabilities is not easy.

There are losses. Children pass away.

Others don’t progress. Glorioso said she has one 8-year-old client she is simply maintaining. That’s not bad, of course, but Glorioso wishes she could do more.

“It’s an emotionally difficult field, I think,” Glorioso said of pediatric occupational therapy. “But I stay in because the kids are amazing. And no matter how hard the issues are they’re going through, they are always happy. It’s a hard thing to explain. They are happy and they don’t know anything different.

And they do what they’re supposed to do, no complaining; they just do it.

They’ve always been my inspiration.

They’re just amazing kids.”

As Yogi Berra nearly said, when you come to a fork in the road, turn left or right. When defending at the bridge table, you will often be wondering whether you should turn left or right.

How do you decide?

First, work out what holdings partner needs to make each choice the winner, and consider whether either is consistent with the auction and play so far.

In this deal, for example, East has to choose a play at trick four. South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond king, under which East encourages with his 10. West continues with the diamond jack and diamond queen. East overtakes the queen with his ace and, when declarer follows throughout, what should East do next?

North used Stayman. He planned, if South had rebid two diamonds, to jump to three hearts, employing the Smolen convention, to show five spades, four hearts and game-forcing values. But when South indicated four hearts, North jumped to game in that suit.

East could shift to his singleton spade, hoping partner could win with the ace and give him a ruff for down two. Or East could lead his last diamond, hoping to generate a trump trick.

As always, check the points. The dummy holds 11, East has five, and West has already produced six. That leaves 18 unaccounted for, but South showed 15-17 with his opening bid.

So, West has only 1-3 more points. As he cannot have the spade ace, East should lead his fourth diamond. When West ruffs with his heart king, and dummy overruffs with the ace, East takes a trump trick.

be dangerous for children, particularly those with asthma, diabetes or other chronic health problems. But even healthy children can get very sick – and possibly die – from influenza. The H1N1 “swine flu” virus that has been circulating since the epidemic of 2009-10 is particularly dangerous for children.

• You can’t catch the flu from a flu shot. The flu shot, given by needle, contains virus that has been killed. Despite misconceptions some parents have, the flu shot cannot infect your child and cause the flu.

There now is a nasal spray flu vaccine made with weakened (but still alive) flu virus, for children who hate shots.

While nasal congestion and a low-grade fever can occur (in about one in 20 children), the illness is milder and briefer than the flu. If your child is between 6 months and 2 years or has a weakened immune system, however, he or she should get the flu shot, not the nasal spray vaccine.

Some children (and adults) who get the flu shot also get a mild fever, an aching muscle where the flu shot was given and feel tired for a day or so.

That’s not because the

dangerous, even for healthy children. Flu can

shot gave them the flu; it’s a sign their immune system is responding vigorously to the shot.

That’s good news, because that’s what we want the immune system to do.

• The flu shot is safe .

Years of experience have shown the flu vaccine is very safe. There is no evidence thimerosal, a common vaccine preservative, is dangerous for children. But preservative-free preparations are available.

A particular flu vaccine used in 1976 did seem to cause a few cases of the neurological condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome.

But this same condition can follow getting the flu itself. Indeed, it happens more often after the flu than after getting a flu shot. Since the flu shot protects against the flu, your child is less likely to get this rare condition if they get the flu vaccine.

• The flu shot protects more than your child.

Children are germ-producing machines. Your child may weather the flu fine – but what about others who could catch the flu from your child?

Although there are a few unusual circumstances in which your pediatrician might recommend against a flu shot, the flu shot almost always is a safe treatment.

It is not too late to get the shot: Flu season will continue for another three months. And the shot can make all the difference in your child’s health.

Dear Abby : All children are beautiful to their parents. My three children are of mixed race and get a lot of attention because of it.

The boys are aloof about random compliments they receive from strangers. However, I’m worried about the pressure it may put on my daughter to be “pretty.”

I care more about my daughter’s character than her looks, but I’m concerned if I say that to these people, it will come off as rude.

Also, I don’t want her to think I don’t think she’s pretty. How can I respond in a way that isn’t rude to well-intentioned strangers, but at the same time allows me to make a statement about the importance of character over beauty?
