Lock #6 The growth of Will County can be directly traced to the building of Illinois and Michigan Canal.

Completed in 1848, and nearly 100 miles long, the I&M Canal was the final link in a national plan to connect different regions of North American via waterways.

With the help of many foreign-born immigrants, the 6-foot deep canal was dug through the northern part of Will County and connected the cities of Channahon and Joliet to the east and west sections of the canal.

The Will County towns of Joliet, Lockport and Channahon were three towns which prospered in the 19th century because of the transportation network which tied the county with Chicago and the East coast markets.

The then photograph shows a view of Lock #6 looking north into the lock chamber.

The locktender’s house, constructed in 1848, was built along the west side of the lock.

The Greek Revival-style structure was constructed in Lockport and floated down the canal to its present location.

The now photograph shows a similar view of Lock #6 today.

JOLIET – Do you want to build a snowman?

Or if you’d rather ski, sled, skate or snowshoe, it’s your season. Winter’s here and the snow’s not far behind.

“There’s an activity for almost anyone, even in the winter,” Will County Forest Preserve Public Information Officer Cindy Cain said.

The forest preserve offers 127 miles of trails that, in order to accommodate cross-country skiers and snowshoers, are not plowed. Sledding hills will be set up at the Butcher Lane access to Forked Creek in Wilmington and at the Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve in Beecher.

Sledding at Forked Creek is not supervised.

Inner tubes are available for rent at the Plum Creek Nature Center next to Goodenow. Rental fees are $1 to anyone older than 18 with a driver’s license or state ID. Visitors can use their own sleds, but not steel runners or snowboards.

“Guests can even call [708-9462216] for sled and skate pond conditions at Goodenow,” Cain noted.

The preserves do not allow ice fishing, but fishing is allowed in open water year-round.

And just as in the summer, Rock Run preserve near Black Road in Joliet seems to have the “busiest” trails, Cain said. While there are fewer visitors, some want to take advantage of quieter scenery and a chance to see wildlife while leaves are gone.

If you’d rather stay out of the cold, Cain suggested checking out the live reptiles inside the Plum Creek Nature Center or learning about the 18th century fur trade at the Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville.

“The winter scenery makes it a great time to hike Pilcher Park’s trails,” Executive Director Dominic Egizio said.

According to Egizio, the park district’s most popular sledding spot is the large hill at West Park off Wheeler Avenue near Rockdale. Sledding on the hill, visible through the trees from Interstate 80, is unsupervised.

Inside the Inwood Athletic Club, ice skating activity increases when

students begin winter break and remains popular throughout the colder months, Egizio said.

“It also helps [visitor traffic] when the Blackhawks are good or Olympic years,” Communications Superintendent Brad Staab said.

Early January also is the busiest time for Inwood’s exercise equipment as many people make New Year’s resolutions.

“We want everyone to stick with their resolutions and keep coming here,” Staab said. “But we do joke, ‘Just wait until March’ when anyone says we’re too busy. [Participation]

‘Lose a Ton’ starts Jan. 19

Staab said studies show it takes about 66 days of doing something to make it “a habit.”

The park district wants to promote fitness and weight loss when “Lose a Ton” begins Jan. 19.

“We want the community to lose over 2,000 pounds and have partnered with Apple Vacations to award separate three-day vacations to Mexico for the male and female who lost the highest percentage of body weight in six weeks,” Staab said.

There are many ways to volunteer at Cornerstone Services.

VIEWS Hannah Kohut Here in Joliet, there are more than 100 hard-working, motivated and committed employees who take pride in their work. They also are activists who frequently call and visit Springfield to advocate for special services, and some even are talented artists with works hanging in a local gallery.

They are the clients of Cornerstone Services, which provides jobs and services to developmentally disabled adults. As I spent an afternoon volunteering alongside them, I was blown away by their amazing work ethic and knowledge of workplace etiquette.

As I stood in front of 40 of these clients, they shared with me their dreams and goals for life. What’s amazing is that they are reaching these goals.

Some are modest, such as visiting a friend, while others are ambitious, such as attaining their own apartment.

But as I walked through the door, it was as if I entered a room full of friends. The

“hellos,” handshakes, gentlemen opening doors and smiles immediately made me feel welcomed and appreciated.

They all were eager to show me their special talents, such as singing, dancing and showing me their art.

Cornerstone has started providing career seminars for its clients, with professionals sharing their workplace and industry stories and answering questions.

Since I was from a newspa-

per, the clients were excited to learn more about what my typical workday is like. Throughout the afternoon, the clients happily shared their own job interview stories and told me about their jobs at Cornerstone.

They are flattening boxes and sorting and packaging items for large, local stores, and take such pride in their work.

While the volunteer coordinator and some clients gave me a tour of the work plant, I saw firsthand the dedication

these clients have to their jobs.

Their work areas were clean and neat, and the clients were excited to point out their own workstations and tell me more about their jobs.

While all of this was going on, the word “disabled” just didn’t sound right. They are all able to do many great things; they just need a little help along the way.

Cornerstone volunteers are key to the clients’ success, and there is no cut-and-dry ap-

proach to volunteering there.

If you are good with crafts, you can volunteer to lead an art project; or if you are great with computers, you can teach a client the basics of word processing or Internet usage.

Recently, a photographer volunteered her time to take glamour shots of the clients, who had their hair and makeup done at a local beauty school.

If you have a creative idea for giving your time, Cornerstone clients would love every minute of it.

The tough part is leaving at the end of the afternoon. The clients all gave me a warm handshake and a few hugs, thanking me for visiting them and asking me to come back.

Seeing the looks of joy on their faces, it won’t be hard to visit again.

Channahon hopes 2015 brings new development

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – An improving economy in 2015 could bring new development to Channahon.

“I’m more optimistic this year will have more development than 2014,” Village Administrator Thomas Durkin said. “We’re seeing signs the economy is slowly improving and want to get ourselves in a position to attract development where it left off [in the recession].”

Durkin plans a coming “housing summit” early this year to offer information on available lots and review im-

pact fees and building permits. Some residential developments have lots platted and “ready,” while others shut down before putting any infrastructure in place.

“I want to see if what we approved six or seven years ago is still viable,” Durkin said of both residential and commercial projects. Village staff also will discuss ways to help existing businesses.

“Not how to run a business, but repairs to the physical infrastructure, for example. We have to ask, ‘Can and should the village do that?’ ” Durkin said.

In 2014, the village approved a TIF district near the Route 6

and Interstate 55 interchange.

About 15 acres are being developed on the north side, and Durkin hopes the growth will spread as a $22 million Illinois Department of Transportation project gets unMissey derway.

If you’re even a little bit like me, you enjoy the holidays, but it’s a relief to have them over.

The shopping, the baking, the wrapping are all things I enjoy at this time of year, but I’m glad the gifts are opened and out the door with their respective recipients, and the home-baked cookies and treats are pretty well digested.

But before we get on with another year, and get back into a routine of healthier eating and taking on less stress, it’s good to take a moment to reflect on some good things.

There are many great area organizations that reach out to those in need during the holidays and all year round.

For instance, the Knights of Columbus and Lions Clubs make charitable donations and hold service projects to benefit others.

Local churches have food pantries to serve holiday dinners and provide food for those in need year round; or have clothing shops for children or thrift shops with everything

The list, of course, goes on and on.

Two area organizations that always seem to be in the forefront whenever a need arises are Shorewood HUGS and Chanooka Wish.

HUGS’ mission is to provide comfort to people going through a tough time, be it a medical crisis or a financial challenge. It makes a difference in people’s lives through granting wishes, supporting other nonprofit organizations and events, and raising money for important causes.

Among the things HUGS did this year was fulfilling 95 wishes – everything from helping a Channahon family through an intensive surgery, providing learning tools for children with autism in Shorewood, and helping a Joliet

family replace items lost in a house fire.

HUGS hosted the sixth annual HUGS for Hounds dog Easter egg hunt to benefit Jullo, Will County Forest Preserve’s search and rescue dog; held a cereal drive and donated 150 boxes to Daybreak Center; filled two cars with boxes of food for Morningstar Mission, with the help of Troy schools; and provided Christmas dinner for 16 families and gifts for 43 children at Lambs Fold.

“It’s been a busy and inspiring year,” HUGS President Molly Babyak said.

HUGS has been the recipient of some great community support, as well. Troy Shorewood Elementary School’s Literacy Team held “penny wars” and donated more than $1,100 to the organization.

Former wish recipient and Minooka High School teacher Sam Pavelka held a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and donated all the money raised to HUGS. Along with the second annual Hits for HUGS

event held by Minooka High teachers, the two fundraisers provided nearly $6,000 to the organization to help it carry out its mission.

Terry D’Arcy of D’Arcy Motors in Joliet pledged to donate $100 for every car sold at his dealerships during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to be split among four charitable organizations.

“In October we were extremely humbled to be chosen as one of four recipients of a $10,000 donation,” Babyak said.

6 Organizations make season bright for those in need

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Video gambling brought in about $38,000 in tax revenue to Joliet in November, down from $40,327 in October, according to the latest figures from the Illinois Gaming Board.

The drop-off occurred despite the number of gaming terminals in Joliet increasing by 10, bringing the city’s total machines to 237. Two more establishments decided to cash in on the industry, bringing the total number of Joliet establishments with video gambling to 64.

Video gambling went live statewide in September 2012.

Statewide, video gambling terminals brought in a net income of $62.5 million in November, down from $64.5 million in October. Revenue is split among local establishments, terminal operators and the state.

In Joliet, a little more than $9.3 million was played, and $8.6 million was won. Statewide, nearly $776 million was played, while about $713 million was won. The biggest local moneymakers were McBride’s Pub in Plainfield and Blackhawk Restaurant Group LLC, which raked in $45,377 and $43,355, respectively.

Meanwhile, revenue at the majority of the state’s 10 casinos continues to decline.

Harrah’s Casino in Joliet brought in about $16.5 million in November, representing a 1.6 percent increase from November 2013. It’s the second time in two months the casino experienced increases in revenue and admissions.

Hollywood Casino brought in about $9 million – or 6.6 percent fewer dollars compared to the same month last year.

Collectively, the two casinos brought in about $1.5 million in taxes for the city of Joliet last month, on par with November 2013.

Jean Lavonne Wilber, 84, of Montgomery, passed to her eternal home on Thursday, December 18, 2014.

She was born on April 1, 1930, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the only child of the late Lloyd and Lillian (Stauffenberg) Wilber. Jean came to Illinois when she was seven years old and attended Phundstein #116 grade school making life-long friends including Murial Kokas and Helen Warning. She graduated from Peotone High School in 1948.

She was in banking at Merchants National Bank and 1st American Bank in West Aurora Plaza until 1987 when at that time she went to work for Copley Hospital in Aurora and then Moose International, Mooseheart, IL. She was a member of Bethany of Fox Valley United Methodist Church, Epsilon Sigma Beta Sigma Phi, Kane County H.E.A., Quilter’s Dozen, Golden Agers of B.F.V.C., IL-LOW-FERS and WIS-LOW, Sunshine Good Sam Camping Clubs and Women of the Moose-Chapter 3001.

Jean is survived by several cousins, three Godchildren and many loving friends.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her Aunt Pearl.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, from 12:30 p.m. until time of service 1:30 p.m. at Bethany of Fox Valley United Methodist Church, 2200 Ridge Ave., Aurora, IL 60504.

New state office to help resolve condo disputes

CHICAGO – Illinois officials will have a role in resolving disputes between condominium owners and associations under a plan signed into law over the weekend by outgoing Gov. Pat Quinn.

The legislation creates an ombudsperson within the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation who will help resolve disputes and educate condo owners.

“This new law will give condominium unit owners alternatives to litigation as they work to resolve disputes,” Quinn said in a statement released Saturday.

The legislation, which takes effect in 2016, also requires condominium associations to have a written dispute policy registered with the state and for the ombudsman to provide educational materials online.

The new position will be in place starting in January 2019 Bill sponsors said the rights and responsibilities of condo owners and associations are complex and the legislation creates a process for resolution.

“Educating the public about condo law and assisting with dispute resolution when requested will help prevent unnecessary and expensive litigation,” said state Sen. Heather Steans, a Chicago Democrat who helped sponsor the measure.

Chicago Ridge mall to reopen after incident

CHICAGO RIDGE – Police are investigating after an incident at a Chicago Ridge mall led to an evening closure.

Chicago Ridge Mall was closed Saturday evening after mall workers reportedly heard gunshots and saw shoppers running. However, Chicago Ridge Mayor Chuck Tokar told the Chicago Sun-Times that he couldn’t confirm shots were fired and police officers didn’t find any weapons.

The mayor said no arrests or injuries were reported.

CHICAGO – Authorities say Chicago could close out 2014 with the lowest number of homicides in decades.

The Chicago Police Department reported 390 murders through Dec. 20. That’s according to a story published Saturday in the Chicago Sun-Times.

The last time the numbers were in the same range was in 1965 when the total was 397. The newspaper reports that 2014’s total is at least a 2 percent decrease from 2013. In 2012 there were more than 500 killings.

The number is far less than the early 1990s, when annual homicides in Chicago topped 900 at times.

AirAsia Flight 8501 vanished Sunday in airspace thick with storm clouds on its way from Surabaya, Indone-

“Based on the coordinates that we know, the evaluation would be that any estimated crash position is in the sea, and that the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea,” National Search and Rescue chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo told a news conference.

The plane’s disappearance and suspected crash caps an astonishingly tragic year for air travel in Southeast Asia.

The Malaysia-based carrier’s loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine.

Surabaya, was overcome with grief when she found the name of her husband, Nanang Priowidodo, on the list.

KABUL, Afghanistan – The war in Afghanistan, fought for 13 bloody years and still raging, came to a formal end Sunday with a quiet flag-lowering ceremony in Kabul that marked the transition of the fighting from U.S.-led combat troops to the country’s own security forces.

In front of a small, handpicked audience at the headquarters of the NATO mission, the green-and-white flag of the International Security Assistance Force was rolled up and sheathed ceremonially, and the flag of the new international mission called Resolute Support was hoisted.

U.S. Gen. John Campbell, commander of the ISAF, commemorated the 3,500 international soldiers killed on Afghan battlefields and praised the country’s army for giving him confidence it is able to take on the fight alone.

“Resolute Support will serve as the bedrock of an enduring partnership” between NATO and Afghanistan, Campbell told an audience of Afghan and international military officers and officials, as well as diplomats and journalists.

“The road before us remains challenging, but we will triumph,” he added.

Beginning Jan. 1, the new mission will provide training and support for Afghanistan’s military, with the U.S. accounting for almost 11,000 of the 13,500 members of the residual force.

“Thanks to the extraordinary sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, our combat mission in Afghanistan is ending, and the longest war in American history is coming to a responsible conclusion,” U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement issued in Hawaii, where he is on vacation with his family.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who took office in September, signed bilateral secu-

rity agreements with Washington and NATO allowing the ongoing military presence.

The move has led to a spike in violence, with the Taliban claiming it as an excuse to step up operations aimed at destabilizing his government.

The ISAF was set up after the U.S.-led invasion as an umbrella for the coalition of about 50 nations that provided troops and took responsibility for security across the country. It ends with 2,224 American soldiers killed, according to an Associated Press tally.

The mission, which initially was aimed at toppling the Taliban and rooting out al-Qaida following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, peaked at 140,000 troops in 2010. Obama ordered a surge to drive the insurgents out of strategically important regions, notably in the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, where the Taliban had its capital from 1996 to 2001.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid called Sunday’s event a “defeat ceremony” and said the insurgents’ fight would continue.

“Since the invasion in 2001 until now, these events have been aimed at changing public opinion, but we will fight until there is not one foreign soldier on Afghan soil and we have established an Islamic state,” he said.

Obama recently expanded the role of U.S. forces remaining in the country, allowing them to extend their counter-terrorism operations to the Taliban, as well as al-Qaida, and to provide ground and air support for Afghan forces when necessary for at least the next two years.

In a tacit recognition that international military support is still essential for Afghan forces, national security adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar told the gathered ISAF leaders: “We need your help to build the systems necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the critical capabilities of our forces.”

In the franchise’s ugliest season since 2002 – the Bears followed a 13-3 2001 season with a 4-12 campaign playing all their home games in Champaign – the team basically failed to show up for its finale in Minnesota, a 13-9 loss to the less-thanmediocre Vikings.

There is plenty of blame to go around and plenty of front office folks, coaches and players deserving of it. But there is no question head coach Marc Trestman stands well ahead of everyone else in line.

Yet given a chance to offer some explanation, perhaps even an apology as his bosses did in the Sunday papers, Trestman instead told us after his team’s final loss that he was “proud of the way his players played,”

Offense ends with lowest point total of 2014

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com MINNEAPOLIS – During their final week of practice, Bears coach Marc Trestman and Bears quarterback Jay Cutler discussed the desire to finish the 2014 season on a high note.

Playing a Vikings defense that allowed 468 yards to the Bears six weeks ago seemed to be the remedy for the embattled head coach and quarterback, allowing them to close a forgettable season with a win.

Instead, as we’ve seen over and over this season, the Bears couldn’t move the football. In fact, their nine points in the 13-9 loss marked the lowest total of the season.

“We had some opportunities [in Vikings territory].

We weren’t able to convert,” Trestman said. “We weren’t able to get the ball down the field. We stopped ourselves on too many occasions, and we certainly didn’t get the ball in the endzone.”

On Dec. 28, the Bears were 4 of 15 on third down, got 12 first downs, gained 264 yards of offense and had zero plays go longer than 22 yards.

“We knew they would have a really good game plan against us today,” Cutler said. “We knew they would try and take away a lot of the things we did well against them in the first game, and they did that, they limited us.

“After we crossed the 50 or the 40-yard line, that’s when they started to tighten up a little bit. I’ll have to look at the film to see exactly what they did to stop us.”

If Trestman is fired Monday, the biggest on-field reason will be his inability to run the Bears’ offense, with so much potential, with the same efficiency and production as 2013.

He was asked if Sunday’s problems were a microcosm of what happened this season.

“I think that’s fair. When I think about our season, I think about so many times that we have stopped ourselves crossing the 50-yard line, whether it’s through penalties, a turnover, whatever it might be,” he said.

The penalties have crippled the Bears game after game, and it was almost comical on the final drive of the season, when three penalties set the team behind the sticks, leading to the 11th loss of the season.

“We were kind of shooting ourselves in the foot like we have been doing this entire year,” Matt Forte said, “which is something that needs to change if we want to continue to play in this league and win some games.”

Ownership watches closely:

Virginia McCaskey, George McCaskey, Phil Emery and others (although, not Ted Phillips) took in the game from a box in plain view of the media. George McCaskey cheered enthusiastically at big plays, like Marc Mariani’s 67-yard kickoff return.

Romeoville rallies, reaches small-school final

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – An eightpoint lead with 9:01 to play is comfortable but not insurmountable.

Ask Lemont boys basketball how uncomfortable it became down the stretch late Saturday night against Romeoville, the Indians’ opponent and host of the Romeoville Christmas Classic,.

The answer: very. It was so uncomfortable that the Spartans were able to overcome the deficit, scored a 66-63 victory in their small-school semifinal and have a shot at a trophy.

That’s something that hasn’t been said in a while.

Not, in fact, within the memory of junior Matt Cappelletti.

“We’ve been down for a while,” said Cappelletti, who hadn’t been born when the Spartans barged into the Elite Eight nearly a generation ago.

But the record of this 4-5 team is deceptive. The Spartans can move the ball and can defend, two things that can lead to smiles after games.

Consider that when Lemont (9-3) went up, 46-38, via Jack Valone’s third 3-pointer of the night with 1:01 left in the third quarter, Romeoville coach Marc Howard switched his lineup to four guards and Cappelletti. No more big guy – and both Armand Archibald and Jason Sims are very big – in the middle.

“We wanted to create turnovers,” Howard said. “They were winning the battle of control.”

The Spartans’ speed created Lemont reach-in fouls time and again, and Romeoville took advantage, making 12 of 15 free throws in the final quarter. Cappelletti, one of the area’s best free throw shooters, was 7 of 8. Lemont was 6 of 7 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Suddenly, a contest that Lemont had taken over to start the third quarter went the other way.

The Spartans scored nine straight points in 81 seconds, and Cappelletti’s 3-pointer from the left side earned them a 50-47 lead.

Lemont was able to tie the game twice, then took the lead on P.J. Pipes’ driving layup with 58 seconds to play. But a free throw by freshman guard London Stamps (20 points) and a pair by Cappelletti (game-high 21 points), the latter with :27.1 to play, moved Romeoville ahead for good.

Now the real fun begins

for the Spartans. They face defending tournament champion Oak Forest in Monday’s small-school title game at 6:30 p.m.

The Bengals advanced via a 42-41 victory over Geneseo, scoring the winning basket with :01.6 to play.

Things were looking up for the Joliet Catholic boys basketball team.

The Hilltoppers made the long trek to Mundelein on Dec. 19 and beat Carmel, 89-71, which is no minor accomplishment. Jalen Jackson scored 27 points that night, and Drake Fellows clicked for 17 to go with 18 rebounds.

“Anytime you can beat a quality East Suburban Catholic opponent like Carmel, which is 7-2, it is indication you are making some strides,” JCA coach Joe Gura said.

Next up was the Romeoville Christmas Classic. The Hilltoppers entered with a 6-6 record and with high hopes.

Those were dashed – temporarily – in a 53-38 first-round loss to Geneseo, which played very well that afternoon.

On Saturday, however, JCA came storming back, beating Glenbard South, 56-38.

Gura emphasized how important the immediate rebound was.

“It’s easy to get your dauber down after a game like the Geneseo game,” he said. “That made this one very important mentally. It was important that we play with intensity, which we did, and the bonus was that we got a good victory.”

For the Hilltoppers to be 7-7 at this point, with no seniors on the roster and some talent on the lower levels, there is evidence Gura’s program-building approach is beginning to bear fruit.

Although the Spartans dropped a last-second, 54-52, SPC decision to Minooka on Dec. 19, that game seems to have fueled their confidence.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, they will find themselves in the smallschool title game against Oak Forest.

Romeoville has two freshman guards who play, London Stamps and DeAndre Heckard. Stamps has been especially impressive to this point.

“Stamps plays like a senior in terms of poise,” Howard said. “Sometimes you see his youth, but he is going to be a good one.”

Spartans junior forward Matt Cappelletti is a solid player; and two large bodies share time in the middle, 6-foot-9 Armand Archibald and Division I-caliber football lineman Jason Sims. Some pieces are there.

“We feel we have a good team,” Howard said. “When you have a long history of losing, though, you have to try to give it up and learn how to win.”

Perhaps that is happening.

Elsewhere, kudos to Bolingbrook on its strong showing at the McDipper Tournament after the death of former teammate Chad Cooke.

And Providence may be gearing up for a strong second half with a good showing at York.

Of course, three area teams will be at Pontiac this week to compete in the renewal of the original Christmas tournament. We will know a lot more about Plainfield North, Lockport and Joliet West by the time the calendar flips to 2015.

Packers claim NFC title with win over Lions The ASSOCIATED PRESS GREEN BAY, Wis. – Limping Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes to Randall Cobb, Eddie Lacy gashed Detroit’s defense for 100 yards and the Packers claimed a fourth straight NFC North title, with a 30-20 victory.

Bothered by a left calf injury, Rodgers will appreciate a week off after the win, as the Packers (12-4) earned a bye. Detroit (11-5) will start the postseason at Dallas next week.

Rodgers was carted to the locker room after tossing his first score to Cobb late in the second quarter.

He hobbled back on to the field in the third quarter with the game tied at 14. He led Green Bay on a seven-play, 60-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard score to Cobb with 3:33 left in the quarter. The Packers didn’t look back.

Baltimore 20, Browns 10: At Baltimore, the Ravens earned a spot in the postseason Sunday, rallying to defeat the Cleveland Browns while getting an assist halfway across the country.

To reach the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years, Baltimore (10-6) needed to beat the Browns (7-9) and have San Diego lose in Kansas City.

Precisely what happened.

Chiefs 19, Chargers 7: At Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City rolled to a victory that eliminated San Diego from contention, but the Chiefs failed to get the help they needed to qualify for the playoffs.

Baltimore and Houston both needed to lose in games happening at the same time, and both rallied in the second half for wins.

The Chiefs (9-7) kept a dubious streak intact: No Chiefs wide receiver caught a TD pass all season, the first time in at least 50 years that happened.

It is not often a good mix at the bridge table when 10 tricks are required and only seven trumps are held, especially when those trumps are divided 4-3. But if you try to find 10 winners, maybe a successful line will be apparent.

In this deal, South is in four spades.

West leads the heart ace and continues with the heart king. What should declarer do?

West would normally have held an eight-card suit for his four-heart opening, but he hoped to silence his opponents. North had too many points to pass and nothing better to do than double. If South had passed, the penalty would have been 500 for down two. But hoping that his partner had four-card spade support, he advanced with four spades.

South ruffed the second heart, cashed his spade ace, and led a spade to dummy’s queen. West’s discard caused declarer to deliberate for a few moments.

South eventually realized that he needed to take these 10 tricks: three clubs, two diamonds and five trumps.

• INACTIVATED VACCINES are made by killing disease-causing germs with heat, chemicals or radiation. There is no chance that an inactivated vaccine can cause the disease it is intended to prevent. A killed virus can’t multiply. As a result, the antibody response is limited compared to a live attenuated vaccine. Some inactivated vaccines require one or more “booster” shots to maintain immunity.

Some vaccines, like the flu shot, are available in both live and inactivated versions. Vaccines for other diseases, such as the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, are available only in the live attenuated form.

In recent years, new types of vaccines have been developed. Whereas most vaccines use proteins from a germ, DNA vaccines include the sequence of the germ’s DNA that directs cells to make a particular protein. Such vaccines may have a longer-lasting effect than traditional vaccines, and are relatively inexpensive to use in developing nations.

An even more recent type of vaccine uses a harmless virus to carry DNA that directs the production of specific antibodies against HIV. Mice whose immune cells were replaced with human immune cells were given the vaccine, and then exposed to HIV. The antibodies the mice were making against HIV protected them from infection

Dear Doctor K: You’ve written many columns about vaccines. Can you explain how they work?

Dear Reader: A vaccine prompts your immune system to build immunity against a particular germ.

It mimics what would happen naturally if the germ entered your body. In order to understand how vaccines work, though, it helps to understand how your body’s immune system works.

When disease germs enter your body, they grow and multiply. Immune system cells recognize these germs as “not you.” One way your immune system protects you against infection is by making proteins called antibodies. The antibodies attach themselves to the germs. This signal causes other cells of the immune system to kill the germs.

When the immune system fights an infection for the first time, it creates “memory cells.” If you are ever infected by that germ again, the memory cells recognize it and initiate a rapid attack on it.

So that’s how your immune system responds to a real infection. Vaccines also provoke an immune response. But there is one essential difference -- there’s no harmful germ involved.

Instead, the vaccine contains a recognizable but harmless version of the germ. When you’re vaccinated, your immune system is fooled into thinking that the germ has invaded your body. Your immune system responds by making antibodies and memory cells -- but without making you sick first.

There are two main types of vaccines: • LIVE ATTENUATED VACCINES contain weakened forms of a specific disease-causing germ. The weakened virus multiplies rapidly. This prompts a full-scale immune response. Not everyone can safely get a live attenuated vaccine. People with weak immune systems, for example, usually shouldn’t get a live attenuated vaccine.

Dear Confused: A man who “tries” to be responsible for his children pays at least token child support to ensure that they are fed, clothed and educated.

Nowhere in your letter did you indicate that your child’s father has done that – or intends to.

Dear Abby: I’m a single mom. My child’s father has refused to take any responsibility since before the baby was born. I never cut ties because I’m sure my son will someday long for and want to know his real father.

Even though he renounced his responsibility, he took it back and said he’d try to be there for my child. We are geographically many miles apart, and I no longer expect or hope for any possibility of a reconciliation – which is fine. I just never wanted to seem like someone who has been dumped, so I reason that we’re cool.

Abby, he never calls to ask how our child is.
