Late shoppers out for a last hurrah

vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Waiting to shop until Christmas Eve is routine for Joliet resident Thomas Stein.

“It’s become like a tradition,” he said while shopping for his son, father and other members of the family Wednesday afternoon at Louis Joliet Mall.

According to a study by New Jersey-based Russell Research, about 14 percent of shoppers planned to do last-minute shopping on Christmas Eve this year. But while the Joliet mall was moderately busy Wednesday, the mood was generally calm in stores, and even in the kids’ Santa Claus line in front of Macy’s.

“It seems like the mall isn’t as crowded on the 24th as on other days,” said Stein, who had a large bag full of prewrapped gifts from his trek through six or seven stores.

“The pickings are slimmer, but it seems like there are better deals.”

Hector Cambray, co-owner of No Manches Clothing Co., has a kiosk inside the mall, noticed a lighter demeanor to shoppers on Christmas Eve. “The past couple of days, it was much busier,” Cambray said Wednesday. “People were at their wit’s end. But there’s

WILL TOWNSHIP – A racehorse was stolen from a pole barn last week.

Will County Sheriff’s police reported the theft occurred between Dec. 8 and Dec. 14 in the 10000 block of West Kennedy Road.

According to police reports, the white thoroughbred horse is valued at $40,000.

Cambray also noticed that several shoppers had checked out his merchandise a week ago and came back to buy items on Wednesday.

“Today [shoppers] already know what they want so they’re just going to get what they came for. They already had it in mind,” Cambray said.

For some shoppers, Christmas Eve was the final leg in their holiday shopping journeys.

It was Romeoville resident Michelle Wilson’s third time shopping for holiday gifts.

She went to New York & Company and Victoria’s Secret to shop for her great-nieces be-

fore taking a quick rest.

“I normally shop ahead of time because I don’t like the hustle and bustle,” Wilson said. “It’s smooth for the most part today. I just hope I get it done. But I’m not really stressing myself.”

Wednesday was Joliet resident John Travis’ fourth time shopping this season, but it was his first time shopping this late. He and his wife came to find gifts for their grandchildren.

“I expected a bigger crowd than it is now,” Travis said, adding that he saw fewer people, in general, shopping throughout the holiday season this year compared to 2013.

Friends and strangers unite to provide holiday surprise for local girl

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – When 11-year-old Hannah Dunn was called to the door on Christmas Eve, the last thing she expected to see was Santa Claus standing in her living room with a stack of presents for her.

She was completely speechless.

Within a matter of minutes, the Dunn family’s small, one-bedroom apartment in Rockdale became packed with members of the Big-Hearted Bikers of Will County – a local group of bikers who raise money for needy families – dressed up like Santa and his elves. And like Santa, they came bearing gifts.

Earlier this month – a time when most other families are shopping for their children for Christmas – Hannah was told by her mother, June Dunn, that the family couldn’t afford presents this year.

But Christmas 2014 wound up being one for the history books for Hannah and her family, thanks to a Facebook post and a recent outpouring of support from friends and strangers.

“This is a very, very strange feeling,” June Dunn said a few days before Christmas Eve. “It’s a good feeling.

It’s a weird feeling. No one’s ever done anything like this for us. … She’s never had anything like this. I already told Hannah she wasn’t getting nothing. I told her, ‘I’m sorry.

I just can’t do it. I have bills to pay.’ ” Patti Johnston, a former Joliet resident familiar with

Johnston posted a message on the “You know you’re from Joliet if...” Facebook group, where current and former Joliet residents can keep in touch, explaining how Hannah’s bicycle was recently stolen and that the family – June, Hannah and her brother Matthew Konow, who moved from Alsip to Rockdale this summer – didn’t have much this year.

“One post, and then everything just snowballed,” said Mechelle Horvat, whose daughter, Madison, is best friends with Hannah. When Madison found out Hannah’s

family didn’t have money for presents this year, she offered to return some of her own to buy presents for Hannah.

“I told my mom, ‘I can’t stand that they don’t have

anything,’ ’’ Madison said before Christmas Eve. “So we returned some of my presents and got to go out and buy a bunch of things for her.”

For the past three weeks,

Horvat has been coordinating everything to make Hannah’s Christmas special.

Since the Facebook post, she’s received phone calls left and right from strangers, asking if they can send presents for Hannah or gift cards for the family. One woman sent hand-knitted gloves and another woman from California sent a blanket and scarf, she said.

“I’ve gotten calls from people that don’t have any money, but they’re somehow finding it and wanting to give back,” Horvat said. “I explained to Madison this is what Christmas is all about. It’s given me new faith in people. I’ve just been in tears.”

A woman from Shorewood donated a bike to Hannah and another woman donated a second bike so June, who doesn’t have a working car, can ride to the grocery store and back.

Her brother, Matthew, also was given gifts.

Randy Jones, founder of the Big-Hearted Bikers group, said he and his group wanted to make Hannah’s Christmas special because “it’s the right thing to do.”

The group turned a planned event Saturday night into a fundraising event for the Dunn family, Jones said, and many of the bikers’ wives went out this week to buy presents for Hannah, as well.

“This is the best Christmas ever,” Hannah said to Johnston, who was present for the Christmas Eve festivities via a webcam.

bstanley@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Joe Chellino woke up thinking there was a car crash outside his house.

“It sounded like a huge explosion. I thought there’d been an accident right in front,” Chellino said of the noise that woke him up about 3 a.m. Sunday.

There had been, but Chellino was surprised to look outside and see a silver pickup backing out of his driveway and speeding off down the street. He immediately called the police, who were unable to locate the vehicle.

“He must have had a lot of front-end damage, but police couldn’t find any debris.”

Drive. The vehicle went up into Chellino’s driveway and smashed through his garage door.

“It struck both cars that were parked in the garage and the impact pushed them forward about two or three feet,” Klima said.

The Saturn and Honda CRV that were parked in the garage didn’t break through the wall of the living room, but caused cracks and structural damage, Chellino said.

“It just smashed everything, and then [the driver] was able to drive away and took off. He must have had a lot of front-end damage, but police couldn’t find any debris,” Chellino said.

A neighbor who heard the crash and looked outside described the pickup as a silver Dodge Durango with a cab on the back, Chellino said.

Chellino has homeowners and auto insurance, but is unhappy the driver did not take responsibility.

“I hope someone will come forward or anyone who saw a silver pickup with front-end damage will contact police,” he said.

Klima said Tuesday police are actively investigating the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call 815-7251460.

JOLIET – The forecast for a white Christmas fizzled to a drizzle overnight.

A National Weather Service prediction on Tuesday of anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of snow from an approaching winter storm changed overnight when the storm moved to the east. Even the steady rain that was anticipated did not materialize.

On Wednesday, the forecast for Christmas weather was quite different.

“It could be a light drizzle or snow shower, but nothing of any significance or accumulation,” said meteorologist Casey Sullivan at the National Weather Service station in Romeoville.

Jeremy Hylka at the Joliet Weather Center also had become increasingly certain on Tuesday that snow was headed to Joliet for Christmas. But

Hylka also had noted the approaching storm was very unpredictable.

On Wednesday, Hylka posted on his Joliet Weather Center Facebook page, “Yet again Mother Nature had her own way and the snow system we have been monitoring, which has been going back and forth for days, has now headed east.”

That may be bad news for some, but good news for others. The storm system mixed with rain could have dropped a half-foot of heavy snow on local driveways if it hit Joliet.

It may not be a white Christmas, but it should be a relatively warm one. The forecast at the National Weather Service is for highs of 41 degrees on Christmas and 45 degrees on Friday.

Kids who get sleds for Christmas likely will have to wait. There is a chance of rain and snow on Saturday. But no significant snowfall is forecast through Monday.

Fritz farm dumping injunction kept in place THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Attorneys for both sides agreed this week to keep in place an emergency injunction to stop the alleged illegal dumping of waste on Herman Fritz’s farm in Plainfield.

Fritz is alleged to have dumped and allowed the dumping of construction and other wastes on the bank of the DuPage River that borders his farm to the south. An emergency injunction on Nov. 20 ordered him to cease any dumping activities on his farm.

According to a filing on the Will County Circuit Court website, Fritz, represented by attorney Randall Miller, and an assistant state’s attorney

agreed in court Tuesday to keep the injunction in place until further case management.

Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie said the next scheduled court date is Feb. 18. He also said prosecutors still are considering whether to file criminal charges.

“The civil action that was filed takes into account all the reports that were filed with the possibility of additional action,” Pelkie said, referencing an investigation conducted on Fritz’s farm Dec. 5. “Our goal remains to make sure the property is cleaned up entirely and make sure no additional dumping occurs on the property.”

AAA: Holiday driving up nearly 5 percent

About 5 percent more people will hit the road for holiday trips than last year, according to AAA. Automobile trips will account for most of the increase in travel, which will reach its highest point nationwide since 2001, AAA said.

Some of that, no doubt, is due to falling gasoline prices.

But most of it is likely due to improved economic conditions, AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher said.

“What we’re seeing is the economy turning around,” Mosher said. “Certainly the gas prices feed into that. People have more disposable income.”

Gas prices in Joliet were as low as $2.169 a gallon on Christmas Eve. Prices were lower elsewhere. The QuadCity Times this week reported gas prices falling just below $2 a gallon, although that was on the Iowa side of the Mississippi River.

AAA reported that on Sunday gas prices nationwide had declined for 89 consecutive days, beating an 86-day record set in 2008 during the Great Recession. Gas prices are the lowest they have been since October 2009, according to AAA. The only states still selling gas above $3 a gallon are Hawaii and Alaska.

“We’re not in usual times with gas prices,” Mosher said.

Still, Mosher said, it’s more likely the money freed up by lower gas prices, rather than the price itself, is spurring people onto the roads this holiday season.

Beth Mosher AAA spokeswoman In Illinois, 4.6 million people will travel by auto, which is up 4.9 percent from 2013, according to AAA. Air travel will remain fairly steady, up only 0.2 percent as 266,000 people in Illinois are expected to fly for the holidays.

Also boosting holiday travel is the fact that Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Thursdays, creating a four-day weekend for people able to get Fridays off.

“It gives one more day for the holiday travel period,” Mosher said.

Nationwide, holiday travel is expected to total 98.6 million, a 4 percent increase from a year ago.

Nearly 91 percent of travelers nationwide are expected to go on road trips, a 4.2 percent increase from 2013. Total road travelers are pegged at 89.5 million. The 5.7 million planning to fly amounts to a 1 percent increase from a year ago.

The AAA forecast includes a note of caution about drinking and driving, pointing out that an alcohol-impaired driving death occurs every 45 minutes. The AAA survey also reports that 91 percent of drivers consider impaired driving unacceptable. Forty-two percent of those surveyed said drunk driving is a bigger problem than three years ago.

It evokes memories for them and gives their families something to talk about with them when they visit, she said.

Charlie Brown with the VFW said the program of giving military blankets began three years ago when members from their own post were having some health problems.

“We were pretty impressed with how well it went,” Brown said. “They’ve been well-received.”

This year, 86 blankets wrapped with paper and bows were given; a total of 185 have been given during

the past three years. Each blanket pictures the seals for the branch of service in which the veteran served, as well as the veteran’s name embroidered at the bottom.

Every branch of service is included, he said.

Brown said the money was raised to buy the blankets from the VFW’s most-popular fundraiser, the poppy sales around Veterans Day. Income from the post’s sale of some property also was used.

The Coal City post also participates in a school backpack program that provides food for needy students during the weekends and in a scholarship program. The post has given five $1,000 scholarships, Micetich said.

MORRIS – U.S. Army, Air Force and Coast Guard veterans who are residents of Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Morris were presented last week with personalized throw blankets, along with handshakes of thanks and wishes of goodwill by members of the Coal City VFW St. Juvin Post 1336.

The presentations were part of an areawide distribution by the Veterans of Foreign Wars to vets who are new arrivals to area nursing homes and senior centers, including those in Dwight, Morris and Wilmington.

“A lot of times, our veterans haven’t been recognized, or they’ve been forgotten,” VFW member Jack Micetich said. “I’ve seen tears of joy of appreciation when they receive them, and we probably get as much joy from giving them.”

“It’s very nice,” U.S. Army veteran Jim Murray said. “It’ll keep me warm.”

“It’s beautiful, and I thank you very much,” said Milton Thomas, who served in the 9th Air Force division.

“It’s awesome they chose a project like this,” Park Pointe Activities Director Barb Hoffman said during the Dec. 19 visit. “It’s so good for our residents and our families. It shows them they are remembered.”

‘The Interview’ to play in Woodridge

By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com WOODRIDGE – Hollywood Blvd. Cinema is one of just a handful of Illinois movie theaters that will screen controversial comedy “The Interview” on Christmas Day. Earlier this week, Sony Pictures authorized select independent theaters – Hollywood Blvd. is independently owned – to screen the movie, which stars James Franco and Seth Rogen as journalists instructed to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The flick has been surrounded with controversy since Sony announced the film wouldn’t be released following a cyber hacking of the company that included threats to any theaters that planned to screen the movie.

Sony since flip-flopped on that decision, though many of the large movie theater chains haven’t backed off their decision not to show the movie.

Scott Potter, marketing director for Hollywood Blvd., said the theater, 1001 W. 75th St., will have “increased security presence” while screening the movie.

Meanwhile, Hollywood Blvd. saw record presale numbers for its three Christmas Day showings of the “The Interview.”

“So far we’ve sold about 800 tickets,” Potter said Wednesday morning. “There are still some left but it will definitely sell out [Christmas Day].”

He said the decision to show the movie had deeper meaning for the Woodridge theater than just ticket sales.

“It’s important for freedom of speech and it’s important for our country. As an independent theater we wanted to be part of this history,” Potter said.

Dennis was an avid Indy Car racing fan and fisherman and also loved attending auctions and flea markets. He was a member of the Joliet Moose Lodge #300.

Marjorie spent her childhood in Joliet; she was the third of four children from an Irish Catholic family. Later in life, Marjorie built and shared a home with her cherished sister, Celeste, and her daughter, Mary Beth. Marjorie was an avid business woman who ventured into many different occupations during her years. She attended St. Francis Academy. For several years, she and her sister ran a small popular boutique called the Country House Boutique and Tea Room out of their home. After retirement, Marjorie was always an on-the-go character who enjoyed her time with her dogs, bird watching, but most importantly spending time with her daughter and her large family.

She was an extremely enthusiastic, big-hearted individual who centered her life on family. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

Oldest verified man in U.S. dies at 110 The ASSOCIATED PRESS ROCKFORD – A northern Illinois resident recognized as the oldest man in the U.S. has died at 110.

The Rockford Register Star

reported C. Conrad Johnson died Tuesday. The director of the funeral home handling Johnson’s arrangements also confirmed his death.

The Swedish-born Johnson worked as a carpenter and

lived in Rockford most of his life.

On his 109th birthday, he told the Register Star, “I feel good, and I haven’t been sick for a long, long time.” But he suffered a stroke a few months

later.

The Rev. Jane McChesney of Tabor Lutheran Church knew Johnson. She described him as smart, good-humored, “a self-made man” and “very giving.”

Senior database administrator for the national Gerontology Research Group, Robert Young, says Johnson was the oldest verified American man. Several women are older.

(David) Weisbecker of Waconia, MN, David J. (Donna) Szopinski of Yorkville, IL and Joseph D. (Naomi) Szopinski of Plainfield, IL; two stepsons, Mark M. McDonald of Las Vegas, NV and Heath A. McDonald of Wonder Lake, IL; 16 grandchildren; a sister, Beverly (Jack) Duranto; a niece, Kathy Duranto-Huebner; and one nephew, Jack (Terry) Duranto, Jr. He grew up in the Cheney neighborhood in Crest Hill and spoke warmly of his happy childhood. He maintained friendships with many of his boyhood buddies over the years and the family enjoyed listening to his stories of their youthful exploits.

Jim attended Lockport High School and graduated with the Class of 1953.

As often as possible, he attended reunion functions and enjoyed visiting with old friends from school days.

He attended Lewis University and was so proud when two of his many grandchildren elected to carry on that

tradition. He loved sports, but golf was his passion and he played often and well.

Jim’s career began as a design engineer with Philips Control and then with ITT telecommunications, where it expanded into leadership roles in the Operations and Marketing of various telecommunications equipment. Among his unique contributions with ITT in this field were the design and patent of the first Toll Ticketing Telephone System for a major U.S. Air Force Base in Nevada and the marketing and installation of large PABX systems in such places as the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, large facilities in Moscow, Taiwan and many more. He then moved to Rockwell International Telecommunications, where he led the successful placement of their massive Automatic Call Distribution Systems into service in many U.S. Government facilities across the United States.

After retiring from corporate life, Jim and a partner purchased three ITT Telecommunications sales and maintenance branches located in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, MD and Harrisburg, PA. Jim served as President of this new company, Americom, and worked there (in the Washington office) until his final retirement in 1998, when he and his wife returned home to Plainfield, IL Funeral Services for James Sopinski will be Saturday, December 27, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Contract for former Quinn aide has extra protections

CHICAGO – A disputed state contract given to Gov. Pat Quinn’s former campaign manager who was selected to run a city-state agency has more job protections than a predecessor’s contract, an analysis of the two documents shows.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that 30-year-old Lou Bertuca’s contract to run the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority guarantees he will be paid in full for the two-year position that pays $160,000 annually even if he’s fired. The agency built and operates U.S. Cellular Field, which is home to the Chicago White Sox, and floated $399 million in bonds to renovate Soldier Field, where the Chicago Bears play.

The contract also requires a unanimous vote by the authority board to fire him. The board includes four appointees of the governor and three chosen by the mayor of Chicago. All three of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s picks voted against hiring Bertuca, while Quinn’s picks were in favor of the move.

Cards Against Humanity buys 6-acre Maine island

AUGUSTA, Maine – Cards Against Humanity has purchased a 6-acre private island in Maine and is doling out 1-square-foot parcels to participants in its holiday fundraising campaign.

The Chicago-based game-maker bought Birch Island in St. George Lake for about $200,000 in October and renamed it Hawaii 2, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Peoria toddler pronounced brain dead after beating

PEORIA – A 19-month-old Peoria boy has been pronounced brain dead a day after police said he was beaten by his mother’s boyfriend.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said Koffi Harris was pronounced brain dead Tuesday in the pediatric intensive care unit at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Ingersoll said the boy will remain on life support until his organs can be donated.

Police said the boy was brought to the hospital unconscious Monday night and with multiple injuries, including head trauma.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reported that 19-year-old Deon Davelle Wells has been charged with aggravated battery. He is

being held on $1.2 million bond.

Durbin asks for help battling heroin epidemic

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and other senators are asking the federal Health and Human Services Department for more help in battling what they said is an epidemic of heroin use.

Durbin and 20 other Democrats sent a letter this week saying they want the department to prioritize programs to reduce deaths from heroin and other opioid overdoses.

They also want expanded access to naloxone. It’s a medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose from heroin and other drugs such as prescription painkillers.

The senators said that despite

naloxone’s life-saving capabilities, its use in preventing overdoses isn’t widespread.

Rockford police said gun linked to weekend slayings

ROCKFORD – Rockford police have recovered a gun but still are searching for leads in the weekend slayings of four people.

A woman, her boyfriend and her two young boys were found shot to death in a duplex late Saturday.

The Rockford Register Star said police announced late Tuesday they had recovered a gun and other evidence but did not provide details.

Assistant Deputy Chief Patrick Hoey told the newspaper no arrests have been made.

After NYC deaths, a surge of support in U.S. for police

By DAVID CRARY The Associated Press NEW YORK – Rocker Jon Bon Jovi donned a New York Police Department T-shirt on stage. Well-wishers delivered home-baked cookies by the hundreds to police in Cincinnati. In Mooresville, North Carolina, police and sheriff’s officers were treated by residents to a chili dinner.

At a time when many in the nation’s police community feel embattled, Americans in cities and towns across the country are making an effort to express support and gratitude.

“I’m showing a little solidarity for my brothers in the NYPD and all of those who protect and serve us every day,” Bon Jovi told a cheering crowd at his concert Monday in Red Bank, New Jersey.

The surge of support is linked to two distinct but overlapping developments.

The immediate catalyst was the killings of two New York City police officers as they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Saturday. For

many of those making appreciative gestures, there also was a desire to counter the widespread protests – steeped with criticism of police – that followed grand jury decisions not to charge white officers for their roles in the deaths of black men Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York.

Becky Grizovic, of Walton, Kentucky, helps orchestrate a campaign called Cookies for a Cop that provides treats to officers in more than 200 departments in 23 states. She was joined by her husband, son and a neighbor in delivering cookies to Cincinnati police stations on Monday.

At the District 2 station house, Capt. Jeffrey Butler said the gesture was especially appreciated in light of the deaths of the two officers in New York.

“The reason that this started is that I’ve just been so disheartened by the news,” Grizovic said in a phone interview. “I wanted to do something positive to lift their spirits because this is so hard on all of them.”

Rallies and vigils in support of police have taken place recently in several locations, including Nashville, Tennessee; West Orange, New Jersey; Annapolis, Maryland; and New York City’s Riverdale neighborhood.

Among those gathering Monday night in Nashville was Merri Puckett, a retired police officer.

“The police are really taking a hard hit right now,” she told The Tennessean newspaper. “Ninety-nine percent of the officers out there are doing a good job – and it’s a thankless job, and they need to know that the public supports them.”

In Minden, Nevada, there was a one-man rally in support of local officers.

John Munk, a retired sheriff’s deputy, stood in front of the post office with a sign reading, “God Bless Law Enforcement.”

“It’s disheartening how people are treating law enforcement across the country,” Munk told the Record-Courier of nearby Gardnerville.

AMMAN, Jordan – Islamic State militants captured a Jordanian pilot after his warplane crashed in Syria while carrying out airstrikes Wednesday, making him the first foreign military member to fall into the extremists’ hands since an international coalition launched its bombing campaign against the group months ago.

Images of the pilot being pulled out of a lake and hustled away by masked jihadis underscored the risks for the U.S. and its Arab and European allies in the air campaign.

The capture – and the potential hostage situation – presented a nightmare scenario for Jordan, which vowed to continue its fight against the group that has overrun large parts of Syria and Iraq and beheaded foreign captives.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, but the U.S. military insisted the plane was not shot down.

“Evidence clearly indicates that ISIL did not down the aircraft as the terrorist organization is claiming,” Central Command said in a statement.

U.S. Army Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, who is overseeing all coalition military operations in Iraq and Syria, condemned the pilot’s capture, saying in a statement: “We will support efforts to ensure his safe recovery and will not tolerate ISIL’s attempts to misrepresent or exploit this unfortunate aircraft crash for their own purposes.”

A coalition official, who was not authorized to discuss the episode publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the pilot was in an F-16 fighter and was able to eject.

Jordanian Information Minister Mohammad Momani earlier told the AP that the plane was believed to have been shot down.

“It is our expectation that the plane went down because of fire from the ground, but it is difficult to confirm that, with the little information we have,” he said.

The warplane went down near the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, the de facto ISIL capital.

Images showed the pilot – in a white shirt, naked from the waist down and wet – being pulled by gunmen out of what appeared to be a lake. Another picture showed him surrounded by more than a dozen fighters, some of them masked.

‘On this day in Bethlehem’ Note to readers: In celebration of Christmas Day, we reprint this passage from the Book of Luke.

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. To the Editor: As we head into 2015, some major changes are on the way for our state government in Springfield. The video gaming industry is ready to work with our new leaders to support our local neighborhoods and rebuild our economy.

The Illinois Gaming Machine Operators Association, on behalf of the video gaming industry, wants to welcome Gov.-elect Rauner, the 15 new legislators taking office in January including Rep. Mark Batinick, and the returning members as they come to serve at an important time for our state.

Video gaming is doing its part to help get Illinois on a better track.

There are now more than 18,600 video gaming machines operating in nearly 4,600 locations around the state. Those machines have produced nearly $160 million in state and local tax revenue in 2014 through October.

Those dollars are supporting thousands of local jobs, helping local governments shore up their budgets and afford infrastructure projects,

and providing critical money for the state’s capital construction program – repairing and building roads, bridges and transit systems and putting people to work. Unbeaten Lincoln-Way West joins Joliet Catholic, Lemont, Lincoln-Way East, Plainfield Central and the hosts in the Romeoville Christmas Classic. That begins today, continues Saturday and concludes on Monday and Tuesday.

Four local squads are taking part in the Plano Christmas Classic, which actually got underway on Tuesday.

Seneca surprised Princeton to earn a matchup with Morris, while Coal City and Wilmington both were bumped into the consolation bracket.

Plainfield North drew the third seed and is favored to meet second-seeded Curie in

Bolingbrook and Joliet Central will be at Rich South’s McDipper Tournament, which runs Friday and Saturday and then again on Monday and Tuesday.

Minooka and Providence will be at York’s Tosh Holiday Classic, which gets underway Friday.

There also are two local teams at the Marseilles Holiday tournament, which also kicks off Friday – Gardner-South Wilmington and Reed-Custer.

Plainfield East will be participating in the Pekin Holiday Tournament, where it could run into second-seeded Peoria during the quarterfinals.

Other events that feature only one Joliet-area team are the East Aurora Tournament (Lincoln-Way Central), the State Farm Classic in Bloomington (Plainfield South) and the Kankakee Tournament (Peotone).

Appalling disconnect with violence VIEWS Rick Morrissey It was awful, heinous, despicable and barbaric, and it has no place in a civil society.

I refer not to any of the atrocities that go on daily around the world but to Lions center Dominic Raiola’s stomp of Bears defensive tackle Ego Ferguson’s ankle. That has been the disproportionate public reaction to Raiola’s apparent cheap shot. I say “apparent” only because Raiola has proclaimed his innocence, while polishing his brass knuckles and sharpening his hidden belt-buckle knife.

I’m always amused at the angry response to dirty plays in the NFL. Players, fans and media are outraged – outraged! – that someone would operate outside the rules of a game based on violence and do something that might cause injury. You know – like players do every other play.

A man who is 6-foot-1, 310 pounds and makes his living trying to obliterate the person across the line from him did WHAT? He stomped on the ankle of a man who is 6-2, 315 pounds?

How dare he!

Raiola, a 14-year veteran, stepped on Ferguson, a rookie, in the third quarter of the Lions’ victory Sunday against the Bears. He wasn’t penalized on the play, but the league suspended him for a game without pay.

He was unlucky enough to be captured on camera doing something blatantly wrong. I’m sure that’s how he and other dirty players are looking at it. He got caught on camera, the video be-

came a national sensation, and here we are, shocked and upset.

It’s like being shocked that a man who enjoys stealing panties is sporting a thong under his jean shorts when he’s arrested.

Look, we all understand there’s a distinction between dirty and clean play, but to say the line is anything other than fuzzy would be dishonest.

NFL violence is arbitrary, in a way. Somebody decided it’s not OK for a receiver or quarterback to take a blow to the head from an opponent’s helmet, but it was OK for a running back to use the crown of his helmet as a battering ram outside the tackle box until last season. Walter Payton made a career out of delivering that kind of punishment to would-be tacklers. Now it’s worthy of a fine.

Do you have any idea about what goes on in the pile during a fumble? Unspeakable things.

Gouging, clawing, scratching and strangling of body parts not limited to the neck. It goes on because officials can’t see what’s happening in the massive blob of bodies.

They miss penalties all the time. It’s why players such as Raiola are willing to take part in “extracurricular” activities.

Whatever they can get away with is their guide.

What do you think these people do for a living? They try to inflict pain and suffering on opponents in the hope it will help their team win. So it’s no surprise a game predicated on violence would attract people with violent tendencies. The highest level of the sport is filled with very large, very strong men, some of whom have difficulty telling the difference

between right and wrong – on the field and off.

To be clear, I’m not condoning Raiola’s behavior.

Somebody’s season could be affected by that kind of act, an admonition that is football for, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” But I am chuckling at the wild-eyed response to Raiola’s stomp.

What type of personality does the NFL attract? Raiola’s personality, the kind of personality that would do anything to get an edge, the kind of personality best described as “not quite right in the head.’’

Yet dirty plays somehow are an affront to all that is good in the world.

Bears receiver Brandon Marshall spoke for the outraged on his radio show Monday on ESPN 1000.

“This guy is a dirty player, and he’s a worse human being,” Marshall said. “He has no respect for himself, and [a] onegame [suspension] is freaking terrible. This was clear. This was clear. This guy literally jumped and stomped on this guy’s ankle. And we give him one game?”

Plenty of praise for Pro Bowler Long

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – In one week, Jay Cutler went from being benched to watching from the sideline as Jimmy Clausen’s backup to back in the starter’s role, preparing for the Bears’ season finale in Minnesota.

But the quarterback is past the point of being surprised during this whirlwind of a season. “You’ve got to expect the least expected at this point,” he said after Wednesday’s practice. “Hopefully, we make it through the next couple days without something else happening. You never know though.”

Cutler acknowledged why it could be hard for some to have the energy in a finale between a pair of teams not going to the playoffs, but will fight for his teammates. “The situation that both teams are in, it’s going to be cold, we’ve got to go away,” he said.

“But I know on Sunday the guys in the huddle, we’ll find a way to rally.”

Long’s accolade: Kyle Long was very thankful for another trip to the Pro Bowl, and Cutler, coach Marc Trestman and Aaron Kromer all spoke highly Wednesday of the second-year guard.

“Couldn’t be happier for him. Couldn’t be prouder for him. Unbelievable talent, and I think he’ll agree that he’s got so much more room to grow,” Cutler said.

“We’re certainly excited for him,” Trestman said.

“Obviously, he’s worked very hard, and he’s gotten recognition from players in the league. We’re excited for him. I know he’s appreciative not only of this award but the guys around him who helped him get it.”

Forte snubbed: Matt Forte said he wasn’t “too crazy” about not getting picked for the Pro Bowl, even though his stats are on par with some of the selections, such as LeSean McCoy and Arian Foster.

He did single out a teammate of his who was also snubbed, though.

“I’m not a big stats guy. I go to work every day and then let everything else take care of itself,” he said. “I’m a teamwork guy. I like to see everybody succeed. I do think Martellus [Bennett] should have made it, though. I like to point out the other guys.”

Pastor of small Joliet church reaches out to people society often forgets DENISE M. BARAN-UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Today, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, born in a lowly place, in a lowly town, to lowly parents and visited by lowly shepherds.

In Joliet, members of a tiny church on Route 6 quietly and unobtrusively live the Gospel message of caring for the poor, the sick, lonely, the forsaken.

The pastor of Shekinah Full Gospel Church, the Rev. Wanda Lee Onstad, said her ministry has two focuses: discipleship and ministry. Worship services are wholehearted and engaging, Onstad said, and can last two hours, depending on how carried away Onstad gets with her preaching.

However, Sunday worship is the just the beginning of Shekinah Full Gospel Church’s mission, not the end of it.

“I like to keep people busy,” Onstad said.

Last month, members bought, wrapped and delivered 30 small Christmas trees to the 30 residents at Spring Creek Nursing & Rehabilitation on Draper Avenue in Joliet. Under each tree went 25 small and inexpensive gifts so residents could open a present each day leading up to Christmas, Onstad said.

Items included combs, highlighters, envelopes, CDs of Christmas music, decorative door hangers and handwritten notes: “If you are reading this, know that you are loved.”

“I’ve been around a lot of nursing homes and I see a lot of forgotten people,” Onstad said.

“They’re at an age where they know they’re not going to come back out of there alive. One man said it does bother him; he gets lonely.”

Lockport resident receives Father Aquinas Award The HERALD-NEWS ROMEOVILLE – Cecilia Arias, a Lockport resident and sociology degree recipient, was presented with the Father Aquinas Colgan Award during commencement exercises Dec. 14 at Lewis University.

Despite being a double major student, Arias also worked to advocate for immigration reform. Most recently, she brainstormed with other college students from Catholic colleges from around the Midwest at the Julian Samora Conference in East Lansing, Michigan.

On the Romeoville campus, Arias increased awareness about immigration and the legal system as she presented “Bearing Witness to Lives on the Border” during the 2014

The Father Aquinas Colgan Award has been presented to an outstanding undergraduate student at the university’s commencement exercises since 1955. The award recognizes students who have demonstrated personal and intellectual growth, a strong commitment to their faith, and a firm dedication to the LaSallian values of justice

and association.

To be eligible for nomination, a student must be an undergraduate who has qualified for graduation, who is a fouryear student of Lewis University with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and who has demonstrated exemplary personal, intellectual and social development in the spirit of Lewis University’s mission.

The award honors the memory of Father Aquinas Colgan, who was chaplain early in the university’s history. A U.S. Army chaplain during World War II, Aquinas died May 6, 1945, while attempting to rescue a wounded corpsman.

He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for valor, becoming one of only seven chaplains to receive this honor in

JOLIET – On Nov. 29, several student-volunteers from Joliet Catholic Academy served more than 200 meals to needy people at Catholic Charities on LaSalle Street in Chicago.

The school’s tradition of being people for others and sharing, and caring for the less fortunate, inspired members of Joliet Catholic’s Key (Kiwanis Educating Youth) Club to implement a project called “The JCA Food Wagon.”

The students serve meals twice a month as part of the JCA Food Wagon project.

Joliet sisters’ 150th anniversary celebration continues The HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – Recently, almost 40 sisters and associates traveled to south/central Illinois to visit the towns of Sigel, Green Creek, Lillyville and Teutopolis as part of the Sisters of St. Francis year-long

celebration to mark the 150th anniversary of their founding by Mother Alfred Moes in 1865.

The first stop was to St. Michael’s in Sigel, where the sisters began teaching from 1879 to 1992 for a total of 113 years of service to this parish

and school.

A Mass was said there at the end of the tour.

Next came St. Mary in Green Creek, where the sisters served from 1933 to 1980.

That was followed by Sacred Heart in Lillyville from 1935 to 2000; and then

St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Teutopolis from 1978 to 1985.

fibroids: • Myomectomy. In this surgical procedure, fibroids are cut out of the uterine wall. This surgery may be done through small incisions or a larger incision in the lower abdomen, depending on the number and size of the fibroids. Myomectomy allows a woman to keep her uterus in case she wants to have children.

• Hysteroscopic resection.

A viewing instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through the vagina. Surgical instruments attached to the hysteroscope remove fibroids from the uterus.

• Uterine artery embolization. Material is injected into specific blood vessels to stop blood flow to a fibroid or fibroids. Without blood, the fibroids shrink.

New fibroids can appear any time before you enter menopause after any of these procedures.

• Hysterectomy. The uterus is removed, along with the fibroids within it. This procedure may be the best option if fibroids are numerous or large, and causing bothersome symptoms that are not responding to treatment.

Obviously, a woman who still wants to be able to have children should not have a hysterectomy. Fibroids cannot grow back after a hysterectomy.

Fibroids are more likely to occur in women who are African-American; started menstruating before the age of 10; have had fewer than two pregnancies; eat lots of red meat; or who have vitamin D deficiency (as indicated by a blood test).

Dear Doctor K: I saw my doctor because of pain in my pelvis and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Tests showed that I have fibroids. What are fibroids and how are they treated?

Dear Reader: A fibroid is a lump or growth in the uterus that is not cancerous. Fibroids can be as small as a pea or as large as a basketball. They are usually round and pinkish in color, and they can grow anywhere inside or on the uterus. The number of fibroids, their size and how fast they grow varies from one woman to another. (I’ve put an illustration of fibroids on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

Female hormones encourage fibroids to grow. Fibroids continue growing until menopause, when production of female hormones drops off.

Often, fibroids cause no symptoms. A woman may not realize that she has a fibroid until her gynecologist feels it during a pelvic exam. When symptoms do occur, they can include pain and heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal swelling, infertility and repeated miscarriages.

If fibroids are small and are not causing any symptoms, they do not need to be treated. You may need regular pelvic exams to make sure your fibroids are not growing rapidly.

If your doctor thinks a fibroid is growing so rapidly that it may soon cause symptoms, he or she may prescribe medications to temporarily shrink it. In addition, in rare cases, about one woman in every 50,000 will have a cancer in the uterus that at first is diagnosed as a fibroid.

Your fibroids may need to be removed if they cause significant symptoms, interfere with your fertility, or if your doctor cannot determine whether they are fibroids or cancer. There are several options for removing

My wife has a hard time making decisions, which has resulted in some issues such as hoarding, never having gotten a living room set, not replacing old carpets (which is causing potential health issues), not buying a new car or painting the house.
