PLAINFIELD – Plainfield School District 202 board members unanimously approved an agreement this week with union support staff at a special meeting.

They also approved unanimously the installation of artificial turf at four high school stadiums. District officials said in a news release the turf installation is the district’s first significant capital project in almost a decade.

A one-year contract with the Plainfield Association of Support Staff was approved Monday that gives union members a 3 percent raise, according to a separate district news release. The contract also improves benefits for most PASS members.

satisfied with what they said district officials proposed for their contract and wanted a 3.75 percent raise with better benefits.

Some support staff said PASS made sacrifices in the past, such as pay freezes, minimal pay increases and decreases in health care coverage quality.

School board President Michelle Smith said in the news release the contract is “fair to our employees while also honoring our obligation to be good stewards of our community’s resources.”

Artificial turf

District officials plan to install artificial turf at four high school stadiums.

The project is estimated to cost about $6.5 million, according to the news release,

which stated that tax exempt working cash bonds will be sold to finance the work.

The installation will occur in two phases over the next two years.

The Central and South high school fields – the oldest of the four schools – will be replaced this summer. Work will begin in May and will be slated to finish in September, according to the news release.

The East and North fields will be replaced in summer 2017 with targeted completion by mid-September of that year.

District officials said the artificial turf will let the four high schools use their stadium fields more often rather than just for football games.

Students on other athletic teams will be able to use those stadiums as well.

Car falls into DuPage River in Channahon News to your phone

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – An 18-year-old Joliet woman was not injured Wednesday when her car fell into the DuPage River in Channahon.

Channahon police officer John Blough said a passer-by called 911 at 11:04 a.m. when the crash occurred near Shepley and Canal roads, and Shorewood police responded before it was determined the incident happened in Channahon’s jurisdiction.

“The driver later said she saw boulders in the roadway, but swerved to avoid them and went off a 12-foot cliff into the water below,” Blough said.

Blough estimated that the water was about 4 feet deep with a fast-moving current.

PASS President John Piechocinski thanked board members and administrators in the release for their work on finalizing the union contract.

“Although we would have liked to have negotiated a longer agreement, [we] understand the dynamics that involves the [state’s] funding for the future. We look forward to continue working together in the future,” Piechocinski said.

The agreement is retroactive to July 1 and expires June 30, 2016. On Dec. 11, PASS ratified the contract by a vote of 671 supporting it and 150 against it.

Blough said Scott does not have a driver’s license and was charged with driving without a license, driving without insurance, improper display of registration, and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident. She was released on bond.

Mom gives to son in need of functioning organ

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jennifer Duffy says everyone keeps telling her she’s a hero.

Her son, Alex Balli, 21, developed malignant hypertension – extremely high blood pressure – that ruined his kidneys. Some of the symptoms include blurred vision and headaches, which he was feeling last Christmas season.

After learning she and Balli are an organ donor match, she plans to give her son a kidney.

The surgery is scheduled for Jan. 8.

It’s her son, she says in reference to those who call her a hero. Who better than his mom to donate a functioning kidney?

“I brought him into this world. And it’s just the gift of life,” Duffy said.

She told Balli as much Wednesday before driving him to a dialysis center inside the Silver Cross Professional Building in Joliet.

Since Balli was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease in December 2014, he has gone through an arduous journey of hospital visits, medical evaluations, dental work and dialysis, a process that cleans blood in the event of kidney failure.

Through it all, he hasn’t complained, Duffy said.

“All the tests that have been done to him, he just takes it.

All the blood work and needles – he’s such a soldier. That’s what I say. My kid is strong,” she said.

However, the family is looking for financial support with medical expenses, especially for after the surgery that will give him a functioning kidney expected to last him 15 years.

Balli’s girlfriend, Olivia, set up a GoFundMe fundraiser with a goal of gathering $15,000. As of Wednesday afternoon, the online fundraiser had collected $1,135.

time custodian here and I have my son and my boyfriend, but pretty much everything is on my plate and my plate is full,” said Duffy, who works at

Retailers welcome lastminute holiday shopping

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – J.C. Penney General Manager Minette Buchas has a nickname for men desperate to find last-minute presents for significant others in the final days and hours leading up to Christmas.

“We call them MIPs. Men in panic,” Buchas said. “It’s when they run into Sephora, asking ‘What do I do? What do I do?’”

While millions jump-started the holiday shopping season this year, others are equally panicked, knowing they still have a lengthy list of gifts to buy – evidenced this week by the frenzy experienced at area department stores such as J.C. Penney and the Louis Joliet Mall.

“Diamond studs always make a lovely gift for women.

That’s what I would recommend. Right now, you do see that frenzy of the men or the dads coming in with the kids trying to fulfill the list and figuring out the best item,” Buchas said.

A spending study released Dec. 15 by the National Retail Federation found that as of that day, 90 percent of Americans had not yet finished their holiday shopping.

The average holiday shopper in the U.S. had completed just over half of his or her shopping, similar to the 52.9 percent seen this time last year, according to the study.

At the same time, about 10 percent – or 22.6 million people – were finished. That means 90 percent of holiday shoppers still have gifts, food, decorations and other holiday items to buy, according to NRF. The biggest excuse offered by those who waited until the last minute to shop?

Nearly 45 percent said they are still weighing choices between gifts, while 22 percent are waiting on the best deals for merchandise, according to the NRF survey. About 1 in 5 people admitted they are procrastinators.

On Tuesday, Stephanie Trusty of Joliet browsed the women’s athletic clothing section for a last-minute gift idea for her mother.

“I’m just looking around to see if anything catches my eye,” Trusty said.

Trusty, who said she was also shopping for herself, hardly made excuses for her procrastination.

“It’s laziness and [lack of] time,” Trusty said. “All I’ve basically got are gift cards. My mom is easy to shop for, but I just found out that my parents spent a lot more on everyone, so I felt bad. I figured I could get one more thing for her.”

Eric Loula, general manager for the Louis Joliet Mall, said it’s certainly one of the busiest times of the year for the mall.

“It’s busy. Very busy. The trend is customers do come out all the way up until the very end. It seems the closer it gets to Christmas, the busier it gets,” Loula said.

Retailers heavily rely on shoppers to whip out their pocketbooks this time of year, he said.

“The holiday season is still the busiest season of the year.

For us, this is the best time of the year,” he said.

Loula reluctantly admitted he had one last gift to buy someone – but for who and what, he wouldn’t say.

“I can’t tell you that because she’ll find out,” he said.

Back inside J.C. Penney, Dave Springer of Godley was peering through several glass casings along the counter containing jewelry. He walked back and forth between several of them, seemingly undecided on what to get his stepdaughter Erica.

“She’s the hardest one to buy for. I’m pretty much done otherwise,” Springer said.

“This was kind of a last-minute thing, so I thought ‘Why not?’ ”

Santa visits hospital with Joliet firefighters

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The man in the red suit met the men in the red truck Wednesday at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Santa Claus of the North Pole accompanied Joliet firefighters as they brought gifts to children in the emergency room and pediatric ward.

Firefighters also gave candy canes to parents, patients, doctors and nurses who claimed to be on the nice list.

“Everybody loves Santa,” firefighter Tim Hunter said.

Santa’s annual visits began 24 years ago after Capt.

Ron Fox and retired firefighter Chuck Willard spent Christmas making ambulance runs.

“We were thinking it’s a bummer to work on Christmas for the doctors and nurses, and then we felt bad for the kids who have to spend Christmas in the hospital,” Fox said.

“Doesn’t disappoint us at all,” Fox said. “I’d rather there are only two kids here instead of 10.”

Santa left a few toys for each young girl, and the firefighters gave the rest to the staff to distribute later. The toys were donated by members of Firefighters Locals 2369 and 44. “[The kids] feel a little better, but we get more out of it than they do,” Fox said.

Because of the success in reaching and caring for veterans in the Grundy County area in 2015, the Hines Mobile Medical Unit is adding monthly visits to more locations in 2016.

Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent Ken Buck said there has been a combined effort, especially during the last two months, to secure more mobile unit visits in the county.

“We want to give veterans more opportunities to get screened and get seen at this full-service clinic,” Buck said.

“We think it’s a really good step and hope to expand the outreach.”

The mobile unit is one of many tools Hines VA Hospital is using to reach out to area veterans to enroll them in and provide them with top-quality VA health care. Veterans can register for VA health care and receive primary care services monthly on the mobile clinic that features two sepa-

In addition to the regular Morris stop on the first Monday of each month, the mobile unit’s new stops include Minooka, Channahon, Marseilles, Coal City/Diamond, Dwight and Pontiac, Buck said. Previously, the mobile unit would make occasional stops in towns other than Morris.

“We’ve had a presence in the downtown area since we were established in 1901,” said Kelly Rohder, JJC’s director of communications and external relations. “We’re proud to continue that investment—it’s the heart of our college district.”

As part of that integral involvement, JJC is investing $58 million in updating its City Center Campus, one of three campuses and three extension centers that make up Joliet Junior College. The six-story, 96,000-square-foot project will be LEED certified with a projected completion date of 2017, and will house the school’s Workforce Development program, its Department of Adult Education and Literacy, GED/ESL training courses, and its internationally-known culinary arts program.

“We serve a broad demographic through the programs housed within this campus. This is a much-needed investment in terms of streamlining programs, updating classrooms, technology, and access to key student support services,” Rohder said.

For example, the college’s adult education program serves over 2,500

students annually through literacy and adult basic education, high school equivalency (GED) and high school diploma/early school leavers transition program, English as a Second Language (ESL), citizenship, English literacy, career exploration, employment readiness, and college and career transition services. The JJC Workforce Development Department provides various services to prepare youth, veterans, under- and un-employed individuals for entry into the workforce.

The project will also allow JJC’s internationally renowned Culinary Arts program to finally operate in one place. Currently, the program is split between the Main Campus and City Center Campus.

Recent culinary arts successes include Andy Chlebana, a JJC culinary arts professor and alumnus, who won the title of Spring Baking Champion in Food Network’s 2015 Spring Baking Championship. Also in 2015, Culinary Arts Department Chair Mike McGreal visited the White House to participate in the “Chefs Move to Schools” leadership team meeting, a part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” healthy lifestyle initiative for school children.

She’s also concerned about the possibility of Balli’s body rejecting his new kidney, even though they are a match.

“I think things are going to be fine. I have to have faith,” she said.

Balli said he’s happy and nervous about receiving a new kidney.

“I’m kind of scared, but I know it’s for the better,” he said.

Duffy was surprised at how Balli’s high blood pressure had went undetected for so long.

“It’s a silent killer,” she said.

The headaches were a warning sign for Balli, who took over-the-counter medication for relief. He told his parents he didn’t want to cost

PLAINFIELD – A Worth man was arrested Tuesday after authorities said he was renting out a vacant Plainfield house he did not own.

On Dec. 8, the victim responded to an ad for a rental property in the 14900 block of Morgan Lane, according to police. Ayham S. Alhourani, 18, showed the house and then met with the victim later that day in Oak Lawn to accept a $3,600 security deposit, police said.

“When the victim attempted to move into the property, he found the key [he’d been given] did not work,” Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said in a statement.

Deal reached in lawsuit on mentally ill inmates

CHICAGO – Lawyers representing 11,000 mentally ill Illinois prisoners have reached a settlement with the state in a 2007 class-action lawsuit alleging that substandard treatment constituted “cruel and unusual punishment.”

Filings this week notified a federal judge in Peoria about the deal. It still requires court approval.

A Wednesday email to The Associated Press from plaintiffs’ attorneys said the agreement will ensure mentally ill inmates get better access to care and will reduce the time they spend in solitary.

It calls for the Illinois Department of Corrections to build four new treatment units, including at the Pontiac and Dixon prisons.

The statement said construction will cost around $40 million.

One Chicago-based plaintiffs’ attorney, Harold Hirshman, calls the deal a “monumental settlement that will have a lasting impact.”

An IDOC spokeswoman didn’t have an immediate comment.

Rialto stagehand wants more youth involvement at theater 11 JOLIET – Tyler Kelly wants to start a Rialto youth movement.

Kelly, 24, and his brother, Chris Kelly, 27, who are the third generation of the family to work as stagehands at the Rialto Square Theatre, were at a City Council meeting Dec. 14 when theater management underwent severe criticism by one of the council members.

They went home and talked late into the night about issues facing the Rialto, its future and how to get young people involved.

“It really struck a chord with my brother and I,” Tyler

said. “It kind of made sense. No one is doing anything. Why not us?”

Two days later, Tyler and Chris were at a meeting of the Rialto board offering to create a youth action committee.

“I feel like there needs to be some kind of youth activity,” Tyler told the board, adding that he was not a stranger to the theater. “I’ve been to the Rialto almost since I could walk.

I’m third generation. It’s in my DNA.” The Kelly brothers’ father, Tim, also is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 124, which works at the Rialto.

So is their grandfather, Robert, a former Joliet police detective.

The brothers’ offer was welcomed by Rialto general manager Randy Green.

“I am delighted that you came here with that intent,” Green said. “You are absolutely welcome. I would appreciate an opportunity to work with you and your guys.”

Tyler is just getting started and plans to begin contacting people after the holidays. His goal is to involve a younger generation in the Rialto and believes there will be great interest.

“Almost any band that I talk to, they would actually kill to have a shot to play on the stage of the Rialto,” he said.

But Julie Lesnik, a 1999 Lockport Township High School graduate and Wayne State University anthropology professor, is on a mission to change the negative perception surrounding termites as a food source as she studies how ancestral humans may have incorporated termites into their diets.

“When I started the research, I never wanted to eat a bug. I’m a horribly picky eater.

But it was intellectually interesting to me. ... And my adviser kind of refused to let me write my dissertation before I ate termites,” Lesnik said. “I became convinced through my research of how important termites were and are, so I started looking into the benefits of eating insects today.”

This month, Lesnik was awarded a $20,000 Leakey Foundation grant to continue studying the desirability characteristics of edible insects, according to a WSU news release.

She said she is honored to receive the award from the Leakey Foundation, which recognizes and is committed to the study of human origin.

“For nearly 50 years, the Leakey Foundation has provided funds for some of the most prominent human origins research projects,” Lesnik said in the release. “As an early career scholar, it is such an honor to receive this award.

I am excited to see where this research will go and where it will take my career.”

Lesnik’s other projects include an upcoming book with the working title “Edible Insects and Human Evolution.”

Lesnik also is partaking in the implementation of Eating Insects Detroit, a three-day, international, interdisciplinary conference on the topic of insects as food.

12 College students feel pinch of Illinois budget battle

By JOHN O’CONNOR and DAVID MERCER The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Jacqueline Suriano has resorted to crowdfunding her college education, thanks to the prolonged budget stalemate in the Illinois capital.

The 26-year-old psychology major wasted no time in establishing “Jacqueline’s Tuition” on GoFundMe.com after the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago informed her last week that she’d have to cover the $2,300 spring subsidy she was supposed to receive from the state’s Monetary Award Program. Worse still, the school said she and hundreds of students like her may have to repay the amount they received in the fall.

“I pay $60,000 a year in tuition and expenses to go to school – $60,000,” Suriano said.

“And then they’re telling me I can’t go to school next semester because of $2,300 that the government already promised me? Like, what?”

Illinois colleges and universities haven’t received funding because of the deadlock over a budget that should have taken effect July 1. Most fronted income-based MAP money for the fall semester, figuring there would be a fiscal agreement by now, when state MAP reimbursement checks typically arrive on campus. But while larger universities say they can afford to float their students the subsidy next semester, IIT and some other schools say they don’t have the money.

In last week’s email to Suriano and other students who receive MAP subsidies, Mike Gosz, IIT’s vice president for admission and financial aid, encouraged them to register and discuss their financial options with school advisers.

He said the school would decide next month whether it would ask them to repay the fall funds.

“That one is something I’m having a hard time stomaching,” Gosz told The Associated Press. “We’re following this situation very closely. We’re taking action; we have a voice in Springfield. We’re trying to tell [students] to hang in there

with us, but at the same time don’t want to crush them immediately.”

Bigger schools have been adjusting cash flow for years because of the state’s proclivity toward late payments, so they have built in more room to maneuver during the debacle. But smaller schools don’t have that cushion and several, like IIT, have said they won’t be able to continue fronting the MAP funding for the spring.

Two-year schools are particularly burdened. Matt Berry, spokesman for the Illinois Community College Board, said a majority are not able to front MAP money next semester. That includes Parkland Community College in Champaign.

“We are probably going to take a hit with enrollment because of that,” Parkland marketing director Patty Lehn said. “It’s a terrible situation.”

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, locked in the dispute over dollars with Democrats who control the Legislature, vetoed legislation in June that would have provided $397 million in MAP funding – a 6 percent increase from the governor’s proposed level. Rauner continues to campaign for fundamental pro-business and anti-union changes to state law before he deals with Democrats on the budget; Democrats demand action now because federally required spending is driving up the state’s deficit.

Pat McGuire, a Joliet Democrat who chairs the state Senate’s higher education committee, said the Illinois Student Assistance Commission is compiling data on how much schools have already covered this year as he pursues alternatives.

“What I’m hearing from schools is, ‘Just give us some money. If the entire MAP authorization of $373 million is impracticable at this time, give us something,’ ” McGuire said.

Rauner’s spokeswoman, Catherine Kelly, said the governor supports MAP and urged McGuire to persuade fellow Democrats to deal with the governor on a yearlong plan.

META CONKLING Meta Baskerville Conkling, passed away peacefully with her husband, Roger, daughter, Beth Wilton and granddaughter, Jessica, by her side.

Meta and Roger were married on April 4, 1941, just before the start of WWII. They have been married for 74 years.

Meta was born in Joliet Illinois.

She moved to Portland, after WWII. She has lived in Portland since 1946, except for 3 years which she spent in Washington, D. C. Meta was a talented Artist, specializing in oil reproduction of the Masters. She was also a dedicated gardener and a member of the Portland Garden Club for many years.

Peggy Say, who advocated for release of Terry Anderson, dies

By ERIK SCHELZIG The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Peggy Say, who spent nearly seven years on a tireless quest for the release of her brother, journalist Terry Anderson, and fellow hostages from kidnappers in Lebanon, died Wednesday.

She was 74.

Anderson, the chief Middle East correspondent for The Associated Press when he was abducted from the streets of Beirut in 1985 in the midst of the country’s civil war, said his sister died Wednesday after a lung illness. She had been living in Cookeville, about 70 miles east of Nashville.

A self-described housewife, Say quickly became her brother’s most prominent public champion, keeping his fate and that of the other hostages in Lebanon in the public eye as the years went by.

“We were allowed a radio from time to time, and we did hear about her efforts and the efforts of other hostages’ families on the radio, and of course it was always a great comfort,” said Anderson, who was held by the pro-Iranian Shiite Muslim militant faction Islamic Jihad for 2,454 days.

Anderson was released on Dec. 4, 1991. He was the longest held of 92 foreigners abducted during civil war.

Most were ultimately freed.

Eleven died or were killed in captivity.

Former AP President Lou Boccardi remembered Say as a “remarkable woman” and a relentless advocate.

“In a very short time, she made herself into a national figure as the family face of long and frustrating efforts to win freedom for her brother,” Boccardi said in an email.

“She never took ‘no’ for an answer.”

Say was living in upstate New York when her brother was taken hostage. She moved to the western Kentucky town of Cadiz to find more privacy for herself and husband, David, in 1988. He died in 2012.

Say’s activism wasn’t without critics. Some Washington officials at the time contended her vocal approach prolonged the hostages’ captivity by compromising behind-the-scenes efforts to free them.

She was dismissive of those arguments.

“I did what I had to do as his sister,” she said on the eve of her brother’s release in 1991. “I don’t think the United Nations would ever have intervened if we had not kept the plight of Terry and other people alive.”

She believed it was the U.N.’s intervention that eventually won freedom for the final American hostages.

Rauner left U.S. for the holidays, but staff won’t say where

CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner left the country for the holidays, but his staff won’t say where he went or even why they don’t want to disclose his whereabouts.

The wealthy businessman-turned-governor left the U.S. last weekend for a two-week vacation with family, spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said Wednesday.

She said he is paying for the trip himself and plans to return to Illinois on Jan. 3, but she declined to comment further.

Rauner’s staff has made clear they don’t believe his schedule is public information, despite pre-election pledges of transparency. Since he became governor in January, his office has released only limited information about his public appearances, typically hours before they begin – a policy that has prompted a legal fight.

Not sharing information about his travel outside the country is just the latest example of Rauner’s secrecy.

David Melton, executive director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, called it “a little odd” for a chief executive who’s away for an extended period.

“I don’t think he’s reconciled himself to the fact he’s a public figure at this point, with all the downsides that may come with that,” Melton said.

There may be valid reasons for not releasing information, whether it’s security concerns or family members’ privacy, Melton said.

It’s also possible Rauner and his staff are concerned about the optics of the governor – who owns multiple homes, though all are in the U.S. – vacationing in a foreign country when Illinois

Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn took several trips to Germany to visit troops at a medical center around Christmas – well-publicized visits that he paid for with private funds. But earlier this month, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel ripped into a Politico reporter during a public question-and-answer session for revealing the mayor and his family planned to travel to Cuba over the holiday break, saying his family’s trips are private.

Associated Press reporters in several states – including Iowa, New Mexico, Washington and Texas – said their governor’s offices typically announce out-of-state or overseas travel, though some do so only if the trips are taxpayer-funded.

Even then, some governors have kept a lid on their travels – and made news nonetheless.

Attorneys back off from alleging mom threatened officer

CHICAGO – Attorneys for a Chicago police officer who fatally shot a man have withdrawn their request to have the man’s mother sanctioned for allegedly making threats against the officer and his children.

The Chicago Tribune reported the top attorney for the city intervened and the motion was abruptly withdrawn. The city’s Law Department issued a statement saying “the matter has been resolved to both parties’ satisfaction.”

Officer George Hernandez shot 25-year-old Ronald Johnson III in the back as he fled police in 2014.

Cook County’s top prosecutor said she won’t file charges against the officer.

In the withdrawn motion, Hernandez’s attorneys said Johnson’s mother photographed Hernandez and posted the photo on social media with the word “murderer.” She was said to have made comments about Hernandez’s children during a protest.

Illinois official: Daily fantasy betting is illegal gambling

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ attorney general says daily fantasy sports betting is illegal gambling under Illinois law.

Lisa Madigan issued an opinion Wednesday declaring that the argument over whether skill is required in betting on short-term fantasy-team contests is irrelevant. She points out that illegal gambling occurs when someone “plays a game of chance or skill for money.”

Most metro areas see unemployment rates rise

CHAMPAIGN – Unemployment increased in most of Illinois’ metro areas in November and most areas lost jobs over the past year.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said Wednesday in its monthly metro-area report that the jobless rate increased in 12 metro areas last month, stayed the same in one and dropped in one.

The lowest rate was 5.2 percent in Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights. The highest was 7.7 percent in Danville.

The agency also said the number of jobs fell in eight areas since November 2014. Carbondale-Marion in southern Illinois had the largest percentage drop, 1.8 percent. That’s 1,000 jobs.

Greater Chicago’s job base grew by 46,900, or 1.3 percent.

Statewide unemployment was 5.7 percent in November.

LAS VEGAS – A woman accused of intentionally plowing a car carrying her child through crowds of pedestrians on a Las Vegas Strip sidewalk is distraught and overwhelmed, her defense attorney said after she briefly appeared in court for the first time.

Lakeisha Nicole Holloway, 24, pursed her lips and blinked as she was led in shackles into a courtroom. She was not asked to enter a plea but nodded to acknowledge that she would remain in jail through the holidays while both sides investigate Sunday’s crash that killed an Arizona woman and injured dozens of others.

A coroner later ruled the death of Jessica Valenzuela, 32, of Buckeye, Arizona, a homicide.

The finding means it wasn’t an accident but doesn’t find fault.

Valenzuela died from multiple blunt-force injuries, Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg said.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys called the ruling expected.

Colorado shooter wants to be his own lawyer

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.

– The man who killed three people in an attack on a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic halted court proceedings Wednesday by demanding that he be allowed to fire his public defender and represent himself.

Robert Dear, 57, announced at a status hearing that he no longer wanted the Colorado public defender’s office to represent him.

“I do not want them as my lawyers. I invoke my constitutional right to defend myself,” he said.

After Judge Gilbert Martinez advised Dear to trust his lawyer, Dear replied, “How can I trust my attorney when he says I’m incompetent in the newspaper?”

Martinez then cleared the court so Dear could talk privately with his attorney, Daniel King.

Carson suggests campaign shake-up is coming UPPERCO, Md. – Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Wednesday morning that he is moving toward a major shake-up of his struggling campaign, with less than six weeks to go until early voting begins to select party nominees.

Yet by Wednesday evening, he tried to steer away from that message, announcing that all is well in the Carson camp.

In a Wednesday morning interview with the Associated Press at his Maryland home – conducted without the knowledge of his own campaign manager – Carson said “personnel changes” could be coming, suggesting he would consider sidelining his top aides.

“Everything. Everything is on the table,” he said of potential changes. “Every single thing is on the table. I’m looking carefully.”

Campaign manager Barry Bennett was not aware of Carson’s statements about potential changes until told by The Associated Press. He later texted: “No staff shake-up.”

By KYLE POTTER The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS – Protesters blocked access to a terminal and caused significant holiday traffic delays at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Wednesday during a Black Lives Matter rally that also briefly shut down part of the nation’s largest mall.

Access to one of two terminals was closed after more than 100 protesters gathered inside and blocked roads leading to the airport, prompting two security checkpoints to shut down for about 45 minutes, airport spokesman Patrick Hogan said. He said the protest caused some flight delays but no cancellations.

Hoping to draw attention to a recent police shooting of a black man in Minneapolis, protesters took a light-rail train to the airport from the Mall of America, where hundreds of demonstrators initially gathered on one of the year’s busiest shopping days.

“The mall was a decoy,” said Black Lives Matter organizer Miski Noor, who pro-

tested at the airport. “I think it was really effective.”

Police said a total of 15 people were arrested at both sites, mostly for trespassing or obstruction of justice. No injuries or property damage were reported.

Gov. Mark Dayton said Wednesday afternoon that the moving protest created a “very, very dangerous situation.”

Dayton questioned the need for such a demonstration, noting that federal and state investigations were ongoing into the death of Jamar Clark, who was fatally shot by Minneapolis police responding to an assault complaint. The governor said releasing video of officers’ altercation with Clark, as demanded by protesters, could jeopardize the investigations.

About 500 protesters briefly gathered at the Mall of America early Wednesday afternoon before abruptly walking out while chanting, “What do we want? Justice!

When do we want it? Now!” Some protesters went to a nearby light-rail train station that allowed quick

access to the airport a few miles away.

Dozens of stores temporarily closed their gates, kiosks were covered and even Santa left his sleigh shortly before protesters gathered at the massive mall. Numerous signs were posted saying no protests were allowed – including a long message on a screen in a central rotunda between two Christmas trees.

That didn’t deter Art Seratoff, a 67-year-old protester from Minneapolis.

“They talk about this demonstration as being disruptive,” Seratoff said.

“If I think about an unemployment rate in the African-American community three times the white unemployment rate, that’s disruptive.”

A similar demonstration at the Mall of America last December drew hundreds of protesters angry over the absence of charges after the police killings of unarmed black men in New York City and Ferguson, Missouri. Stores in the mall had to close, and dozens of people were arrested.

By JACQUES BILLEAUD The Associated Press PHOENIX – The body of a Russian rocket that burned up as it entered the Earth’s atmosphere set off a wave of excitement on social media and fueled speculation over what caused the flash of light to shoot across the sky in the American West.

The fireball seen Tuesday over Arizona, Nevada and California night was an SL-4 rocket body booster from Russia that launched Monday, U.S. Strategic Command spokeswoman Julie Ziegenhorn said.

U.S. and Russian officials declined to discuss the rocket’s use, but experts outside the government said it was launched as part of a project to bring materials to a space station. They said the rocket’s body likely detached from the craft taking items into space and burned up as it started to go out of orbit.

“It’s not something people need to worry about,” said David Wright, a space-debris expert who is co-director of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

An unmanned Russian cargo ship lifted off Monday from that nation’s space launch complex in Kazakhstan on a journey to the International Space Station. The craft, which carried fuel, water, food and other supplies, has since docked at the station.

People who witnessed the burning light posted photos and video on social media, with some speculating that it was a meteor.

Others resorted to humor, punctuating their comments with a rocket emoji and saying the light across the sky looked Santa’s sleigh. Some people expressed distrust about the U.S. government’s comments on the rocket.

“I was kind of freaked out to see something like that blowing up in the air, and you don’t know what it is,” said Gunnar Lindstrom, who saw the streak of light as he got out of a car at his Las Vegas apartment complex.

The flash of light is not unusual in portions of the Western United States, which offer an effective stage for sky shows. Dark skies and few tall mountains make Nevada and northern Arizona a good spot to view the atmosphere at night, said Josh Bangle, a spokesman for the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff.

Light pollution over major metro areas might make such a flash of light hard to see.

The same areas got a good view of a U.S. military missile test two weeks ago in New Mexico that produced a white contrail across the sky.

Officials shared details about the launch with communities hundreds of miles away to cut down on the speculation.

U.S. blocks UK Muslim family from boarding plane to Disneyland

The issue is sensitive because U.S. Republican presidential contender Donald Trump has called for a temporary ban on Muslims visiting the U.S. because of concerns about extremist attacks.

Stella Creasy, a member of the opposition Labour Party, said Wednesday that U.S. officials gave no explanation for

refusing to allow her constituents to board a flight from Gatwick Airport on Dec. 15, so she wrote Cameron seeking his intervention. She said there is “growing fear” among British Muslims that aspects of Trump’s plans David are coming into Cameron practice even though they have been widely condemned.

A top Muslim group said cases like this appear to be related to religion and are worrying for British Muslims.

He said he had never had any problem travelling on that visa before.

“I asked him why repeatedly and he said ‘You must have done something wrong,’ without any explanation,” Masroor said.

He said he feared that U.S. officials were singling out Muslims.

“This is absolutely discrimination. It is not acceptable and playing into the hands of the terrorists,” Masroor said.

The Muslim Council of Britain also said the last-minute denial of boarding privileges without explanation is distressing for Muslims.

“There is a perception that such decisions are being made due to the faith or political activism of individuals,” the council said.

BAGHDAD – A wave of attacks across Iraq killed at least 15 civilians Wednesday as government forces pressed on with their offensive to dislodge Islamic State militants from a major city west of Baghdad, officials said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, though they bore the hallmarks of the IS, a Sunni militant group that has targeted Iraqi forces, civilians and especially Shiites.

In the Shiite-majority town of Khalis, about 50 miles north of the Iraqi capital, two explosives-laden cars were detonated. The first car was parked inside a bus station and that explosion killed three and wounded 10, a police officer said.

The second car bomb exploded at the town’s outdoor grocery market, killing four civilians and wounding eight.

In and around Baghdad, five bombs went off in commercial areas, killing eight civilians and wounding 35, two police officers said. Three medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Madigan needs lesson in etiquette

If nothing else, it’s rude.

House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, missed a leaders meeting on the budget last week because of an unexplained scheduling conflict.

Madigan didn’t give an explanation on why he missed the meeting. There was speculation he may have been traveling or visiting relatives. His office would say only that there was a scheduling conflict.

Which, like we said, is rude. Etiquette is pretty clear on this point. If you’re invited to a meeting and you can’t make it, you let the host know ahead of time. If nothing else, Madigan owes the taxpayers an explanation about why he didn’t attend a meeting to address the state’s largest and most pressing issue.

What’s more important than solving the state’s financial problems and its budget impasse?

Gov. Bruce Rauner said the Dec. 17 meeting, which was held with Senate President John Cullerton, Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno and House Minority Leader Jim Dunkin, was productive. Rauner also said it would most likely be the last meeting of the year.

“With the holidays now and kids on vacation and travel, we may not be able to meet in the next two weeks,” Rauner said.

“We’ve all agreed we should meet again as soon as we can.”

Hopefully the holidays will allow all parties, but especially Madigan, to examine their roles in this fiasco.

crat-led General Assembly are at odds over the governor’s requirement that some reforms take place along with the new budget. Rauner has pushed for term limits, a change in the way the state’s political maps are redrawn, changes to workers’ compensation and changes in what can be collectively bargained with public employee unions.

Madigan has stated those are “extreme” issues that do not affect the budget. Although Madigan can be eloquent at times about the state’s financial issues, he has failed to accept any responsibility, even though he’s been in charge of the House, and the state Democratic Party, for the last several years. Madigan acts like he believes these budget issues have arisen since Rauner took office in January.

While Madigan is often given credit for out-smarting his competition, his motives are actually quite clear. He is against anything that will weaken his grip over the General Assembly and the state.

That’s why he opposes common-sense reforms such as fair political maps.

If Madigan really cared about the state, he would be more involved in solving the state’s multitude of problems and less concerned about job protection for himself and his fellow Democrats. He’d also extend the courtesy of explaining why he didn’t attend a meeting to address those issues.

Faith, persecution and Christmas ROME – Are you a turtle or a chameleon? That’s the question that came to my mind as Hugh Hewitt declared during the recent Republican debate that families and friends might be sitting around on Christmas day still talking about it.

There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but the prospect brought to mind what we might be failing to talk about at tables around the country – who might not be in our prayers. That includes Jesus Christ, “the reason for the season” as many a button and bumper sticker put it, and those who today are persecuted and dying because they follow his example.

For a few days, I’ve been at a religious gathering up the Janiculum Hill from St. Peter’s Basilica here, called “Under Caesar’s Sword: An International Conference on Christian Response to Persecution.”

One of the many standouts of the event is the powerful, melodious and courageous voice of Helen Berhane. She’s a gospel singer from Eritrea who spent 32 months in a metal shipping container, imprisoned for daring to sing about her faith. That she would be confined under cruel and inhumane conditions – including a mentally ill woman biting and pulling at her hair – is unconscionable. But Berhane radiates joy, because even in the darkest hours, she knew the presence of God. And she testifies that there are worse things than imprisonment.

The conference was filled with brave souls who refuse to deny their Christian faith, even in the most hostile of circumstances.

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez Pascal Warda from Iraq, Tehmina Arora from India and Sister Joanna Salib, a Coptic Christian from Egypt, all testified about serving and giving courage to those who, in their poverty and desperation, feel besieged and without choices, whatever their faith.

The challenges to religious freedom around the world are not breaking news to Mary Ann Glendon, Harvard law professor, former U.S. ambassador to the Holy See and member of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. But she was particularly shaken by how abandoned by the West, and by the United States in particular, the Christians who are being targeted

by ISIS’ modern-day genocide feel.

As Glendon put it to me: “What struck me the most – and what was most painful to hear – were the expressions of disappointment over the relative silence on the part of those in Western democracies who are in a position to do so much more to help. As one speaker put it – the silence is so deafening as to amount to complicity.”

The conference focused on coping strategies – what Christians do in response to persecution.

Glendon, in particular, sees a need for new tactics.

“The strategies developed by our Catholic immigrant ancestors in the U.S. are now actually obstacles to a robust defense of religious freedom at home and

are probably contributing to our silence about persecution abroad,” Glendon says.

She continues: “I call these strategies the turtle and chameleon strategies. The turtles kept their faith inside their shells; the chameleons adapted to fit into the new environment. In material terms, that worked pretty well for our parents and grandparents as they tried to make their way in the new world. But for many, what began as a coping strategy became a way of life – and not the way of life to which we are called as Christians.”

This is the first Christmas in many years where one of the most famous American churches, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, will celebrate midnight Mass without construction scaffolding.

St. Patrick’s stands as a testimony to what was important to early Catholic immigrants to New York: to have a place to pray – to have a place, period. St. Patrick’s stands as a reminder of who they were and what they were most grateful for: their God, their hope.

Helen Berhane and other modern Christians faced with the choice to recant or remain strong remind us that gratitude for the eternal should be what we focus on this Christmas.

True love. That’s the thing that will change the world. That’s the Christmas story.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com OSWEGO – After pulling off the difficult feat of defeating its biggest rival twice within a span of five days, Plainfield North’s girls basketball team received quite an award for its efforts.

After a 64-54 win over Plainfield East in the quarterfinals of the Oswego East Holiday Tournament, the Tigers drew a talented Proviso East squad in Wednesday’s semifinals.

The Pirates’ combination of defensive quickness, good rebounding and long-range accuracy overwhelmed the Tigers, who fell 81-38 to drop into Saturday’s 1 p.m. thirdplace contest against Downers Grove South, which lost the other semifinal game to Sycamore.

“That was a great team,” North coach Reggie Lemon

said of the Pirates. “But I was glad to play them since it tells us what we need to get to and where we need to be. It was a great experience for us, and especially in the mental part of the game.

“It’s hard to do,” Lemon said of the wins in short order over the Bengals. “If we play mentally tougher, we can beat a lot of people. We’ve still got a ways to go with our mental game, but we’re getting there.

I like how the girls are running stuff better and are more patient on the offensive end.

They’ve always played hard on the defensive end, so I’m encouraged.”

Proviso East (14-2) set the tone in the initial 4:55 when its press forced seven turnovers and North only connected on one of six shots to quickly fall behind by a 12-3 margin.

Lockport duo dominates Providence

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – There was a change of scenery for Lockport’s girls basketball team, but some things stayed the same Wednesday.

With less than two minutes to go in the first half, Kianna Campbell picked off a pass and had an easy layup.

Seconds later, the senior got another steal and set up a play.

Junior Elena Woulfe handed it off to Campbell, then Woulfe drove to the basket. Campbell gave her a quick pass and Woulfe battled through two defenders to score a bucket and make the score, 27-14.

Even though Providence put up a fight in the second half, the Porters cruised to a 55-40 nonconference home win Wednesday behind the duo.

“Kianna is averaging six

steals a game and she had another six today,” Porters coach Dan Kelly said. “Defensively, she’s so quick. Offensively, she’s not only so quick, she understands the game and sees it.

She anticipates well, and her and Elena have a good relationship on and off the court.

I think it shows on the court all of the time. They work well with each other.”

The pair helped Lockport start the game off with a bang.

Nine seconds in, Campbell scored. Within the next 27 seconds, Woulfe connected on a put-back and Campbell scored again off a layup.

It forced Providence to call a timeout in the first minute of the game, but the Porters (6-4) continued to dominate the first half.

They had a little incentive to dominate.

port Central and we begged the coaches to get us here [East], so he’s like, ‘All right, I got you guys here, so give it your all.’

That’s what we did.”

Lockport succeeded because of its hustle, press and learning from its defensive mistakes in a recent loss to Sandburg.

The Porters outrebounded the Celtics, 38-30, and had an 8-7 advantage in steals. Even though the steals differential isn’t large, Lockport was able to convert steals to points by looking down the floor for a waiting open player.

“In practice, we’ve been doing a lot on hustle drills and pushing it ahead, so we made sure to use that in the game today,” Woulfe said.

“I’m very pleased with our press,” Campbell added. “Last year, we pressed little to nothing. This year, we added a dia-

mond press and it’s so good. It shows how fast we are. ... No one expects it.”

Campbell posted a gamehigh six steals and converted almost all of those steals into points. She added 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Woulfe had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Taylor Hopkins contributed seven points, while Madalyn Kennedy and Morgan Pytlewski both added four points. Laurel Kucharski (nine rebounds) and Emily Dybas added three points a piece.

In the second half, Providence (1-13) came within six points.

“You could see that we’re struggling for answers,” Celtics coach Eileen Copenhaver said. “Give credit to Lockport, they were a step quicker on everything today. They were

a step quicker on the rebounds to the loose balls. You’ve got to compete for those and I don’t think we did a good enough job on them.”

Ryann O’Garek, who led the Celtics with 12 rebounds, scored seven of her 10 points in the first half. Molly Hallberg and Allee Hernandez had hot hands in the second half.

Hallberg (10 points) and Hernandez (eight points) both hit two three-pointers in the final 16 minutes.

“I give Providence credit,” Kelly said. “They didn’t go away. They fought the entire game. They got it down to six points in the second half. We had built a big lead in the first half and they didn’t go away.

They got hot from the threepoint line, so we made the switch to man to try to take that way, and I thought our girls did a good job.”

Romeoville Christmas Classic begins Saturday Romeoville Christmas Classic

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent The holiday season is rich with tradition and that also includes the tradition of high school basketball tournaments.

With the area boys basketball teams involved in a holiday tournament, the Romeoville Christmas Classic has the most local teams participating.

The tournament will start Saturday and will run through Wednesday. The 16-team field features five local teams and a mix of suburban and Chicago city schools.

On Saturday, Plainfield Central will get things started with a 9 a.m. tip against Reavis. Lemont will take on Chicago Christian at 1:30 pm.

Joliet Catholic Academy will take the court at 5 p.m. to face Shepard, Lincoln-Way East takes on Downers Grove North in the 6:30 p.m. time slot and the host Spartans play Oak Forest in the first day finale at 8 p.m.

“It means a lot to play and defend your home court for a holiday tournament,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said.

“We want to compete well, play four quarters of solid basketball. We have been close in so many games this season, and this will be some great competition.

“This could set us up well for the remainder of our conference schedule (Southwest Prairie) when we get back at it in January. There is a very good mix of teams from the suburbs, the city of Chicago and our local teams.”

Other schools participating and first-round match-ups are – Oswego East vs. Geneseo (10:30 a.m.), Argo vs. Lindblom (noon) and Glenbard South vs.

Phillips (3:30 pm).

“We have two goals this year heading into the tournament,” JCA coach Joe Gura said. “Our emphasis has shifted some since the program has made the steps forward.

Lincoln-Way Central will follow at 10:30 a.m. and take on defending champion Hales Franciscan. The Steelmen will have a 4:00 p.m. game against King.

Providence Catholic and Minooka will play in the 42nd annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York in Elmhurst.

The tournament runs from Dec. 26 through 31.

Boise State jumped out to a big lead in the first two quarters and cruised to a 55-7 win Wednesday over Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego for the Huskies’ worst loss since 2007.

State, which now has 64 wins since 2010 compared with 65 by Northern Illinois, outgained the Huskies, 654-33, and set a Poinsettia Bowl record for most points in a game.

“Let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said about whether the loss hurts the Huskies’ reputation.

“We lost a game where they got after us up front. We’re not used to that. But there was never any quit out of anybody on this team. There was no give up. They were fighting the entire time.”

It’s the most lopsided loss

for Northern Illinois since falling, 70-21, at Toledo in 2007.

It’s also the fourth consecutive bowl loss for the Huskies, who last beat Arkansas State in the 2012 GoDaddy Bowl.

“We looked at everything last year and we’ll look at it again this year,” Carey said of the Huskies’ 52-23 loss to Marshall in the 2014 Boca Raton Bowl. “I think you do that whether you win or lose, but there’s more attention paid to it when you lose. We’ll give it it’s due here after Christmas.

Jeffery, McClellin miss practice; Callahan returns

Coach John Fox was asked if he would consider shutting down Jeffery, considering the injuries he’s had this season.

“I put that in the medical people’s hands. I have no idea.

I know he didn’t practice today. We’ll have meetings tonight and again in the morning to see where that lies,” Fox said. “I don’t really look at that that way. If a guy is available, he’s available. I’m not going to deny a player the right to play, whether there’s two games or 12 games left.”

Cornerback Bryce Callahan (quad) returned to practice in a limited fashion. Receiver Eddie Royal (knee), outside linebacker Pernell McPhee (knee), cornerback Tracy Porter (ankle) and safety Adrian Amos (shoulder) all were limited.

Smaller reunion for Lovie: The Bears’ former

coach faced 11 of his players last year when the Bears hosted the Buccaneers, and another one, Charles Tillman, was on injured reserve. On Sunday, Lovie Smith will see only six familiar faces on the other sideline – Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Robbie Gould, Sherrick McManis, Alshon Jeffery and Shea McClellin.

“I don’t think that’s odd because that’s the league. That’s the NFL,” Smith said of the roster turnover. “... There won’t be a lot of people that I really know on the other side

Smith on Cutler: This year’s version of Cutler is protecting the football at a better rate than any of his seasons in Chicago, and Smith has noticed that, but also the same positives from when he coached Cutler.

“Jay’s playing outstanding ball,” he said. “Over the course of when I was there, the talent … he could throw the ball as well as anyone around. He’s mobile. They’re doing good things with him.

He’s moving the chains with his feet, buying time, making good decisions. He’s a good football player, he was that way. Won a lot of games there with Jay as our quarterback.

He’s still a very good quarterback.”

Big test for run ‘D’: One week after facing Adrian Peterson – and holding the Vikings running back to 63 yards – the Bears face Doug Martin and his 5.1-yard rushing average and 1,305 yards on the season.

“Very good running back.

A lot of similarities to Peterson,” Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “Maybe he doesn’t have Peterson’s breakaway speed, but very tough inside runner who can bounce it outside, and he’s made a lot of big plays. He sees the holes very well. He’s got great running instincts in finding the hole and the softness in a defense. This guy has made a lot of big plays.”

Martin has 13 runs of 20 yards or more this season, and even though the Bears’ defense is giving up 4.6 yards a carry, it is tied for the league lead in giving up only four carries for more than 20 yards.

OLIET – One Sunday morning in 2012, Karl Henning of Joliet was walking around Lynne Thigpen School, as is his daily habit, when he noticed a crew of people working in the back.

“They were putting up the stage for their church. They rented the school,” Henning said. “I got a little nosy and wanted to see what was going on.”

But Henning said the workers told him, “Wait. We’ll get you a chair.”

So Henning stayed. He so enjoyed the sermon church Pastor Eric Posteluk delivered that members invited Henning to return.

Henning agreed – on one condition.

“You have to put the chair back in the same place,” Henning said was his reply. “So I came back the next Sunday and haven’t missed since.”

On Dec. 20, the members of Harvest Bible Chapel Joliet – which now meets in the former Cub Foods on South Larkin Avenue – honored Henning with a birthday reception.

Henning turns 100 on Christmas Day. Posteluk is glad Henning found Harvest Bible Chapel Joliet.

“He’s the kind of person that endears the masses to him,” Posteluk said. “He’s very kind, very warm, and he always has some articulate word for me, very, very encouraging. Instead of telling you all about himself, he loves to talk about others and encourage. He’s adored by our church; the people relate to him like their grandfather that they love.”

In 2009, he felt his first spiritual stirrings. A Polish woman who cleaned twice a month for the couple and then shared a meal with him and Esther always prayed before dinner.

“We held hands and she prayed in Polish. It was so refreshing,” Henning said. “And my wife loved her cooking.”

That woman invited Henning to her church in Plainfield, and Henning attended a few times. But he didn’t feel the pastor was preaching the truth.

But how did Henning know it wasn’t the truth?

“If you read the Bible,” Henning said, smiling a warm, genuine smile, “you’d know.”

Karen Blumhardt, director of assimilation at Harvest Bible Chapel, recalled Henning’s reaction to a sermon Posteluk delivered a few weeks ago about personally responding to God’s love. Henning stood up and publicly declared Jesus as his savior, which was touching to see, Blumhardt said.

“He just brings joy to so many people,” Blumhardt said. “He likes to give hugs to kids – and me. I love to get my hugs from Karl every Sunday.”

But it’s Henning who feels he’s blessed. Each morning when he prays, Henning said, he asks the angels to watch over him, take him by the hand and guide him. When Henning attends Harvest Bible Chapel Joliet on Sundays, he encounters more angels, in the form of the smiling children, he added.

Henning said he recently witnessed the baptism of 10 people.

Again Posteluk impressed him, the way he made each baptism personal.

Henning again praised Posteluk’s preaching.

“He doesn’t ever get away from the truth. Ever,” Henning said. “If you don’t believe it, everything he says is right there in the Bible for you to read.”

In today’s deal, South has to guess what to do at trick one. True, it is only one deal in a lifetime of contracts, but partner will be very happy if you take the correct one small step.

South is in three no-trump, and West leads his fourth-highest heart. If you were declarer, how would you plan the play?

In the auction, South’s redouble promised at least 10 high-card points.

Next, note West’s one-heart advance.

From the logic of the auction, he was known to hold a very weak hand. He was right to bid because he had a definite preference among the three unbid suits.

South’s one-no-trump rebid showed 10-12 points. North, adding one point for his good five-card suit, jumped to game.

South starts with only three top tricks: one heart and two clubs. He can establish four winners in diamonds and three in spades, but that involves losing the lead twice, and he might concede those two aces and three hearts.

The key decision is this: How many hearts did West start with? If four, South must win the first trick and go about his business. If five, declarer must duck the first trick and duck the second heart trick before driving out those aces, which must be held by East.

It is a guess, but West is more likely to have five than four because he bid the suit. With only four, he might have passed over the redouble to let his partner choose a suit. But it is close.

The ideal candidate for joint replacement surgery is in good general health and not overweight.

During joint replacement surgery, the surgeon removes damaged bone and joint tissue. He or she then replaces it with an artificial joint made of metal or ceramic.

Together, you and your doctor must weigh the benefits and risks of joint replacement. Keep in mind that the average artificial joint lasts for about 15 to 20 years.

Knee replacements work well for many people. Still, you need to have realistic expectations about what joint replacement surgery will and won’t do for you. A new knee should help you return to normal activities for your age. But you won’t be able to do more than you could before osteoarthritis interfered with your activities.

The major consistent benefit of joint replacement is substantial relief from pain. My hip replacement was 14 years ago. I haven’t had a day of pain since.

Dear Dr. K: I have osteoarthritis that’s gotten worse over the past few years. My doctor has explained the pros and cons of knee replacement, but it seems like the timing is up to me. How will I know when the time is right to replace my joint?

Dear Reader: If your experience with a knee replacement is like that of most of my patients, you’ll know when the time is right only after the time has passed. I’ve rarely met a person who had a knee or a hip replacement who did not say, after the surgery, “I should have had the surgery long before I finally did.”

That surely was my experience with hip replacement due to osteoarthritis.

Looking back, I should have had the surgery at least two years before I did.

It’s a simple question to ask yourself: Are other, non-surgical treatments giving you enough relief?

Or despite the treatments, are you having to restrict your life in ways that make you unhappy? No one likes to face surgery, so you can kid yourself that your life is not restricted that badly and postpone considering surgery.

For me, it suddenly became clear after years of denial. I was on a vacation in a wonderful city, and I wanted to spend several hours walking. But after a few blocks, my hip hurt so much that I just couldn’t.

That was the moment I said to myself: Enough is enough.

You may want to consider knee replacement sooner rather than later if one or more of the following statements applies to you: • You are unable to complete normal daily tasks without help.

• You have significant pain daily.

• Pain keeps you awake at night despite the use of medications.

I suspect that it comes from having a father who was a violent, emotionally abusive alcoholic. Alcohol has zero appeal for me and, as I’m in my mid-20s, it’s difficult for me to go on outings with friends without having to go to a bar. I become that grumpy, silent person in the corner.

Because of this, my fiancee has begun socializing with her family and our friends without me.

Most recently, they celebrated a sibling’s 21st birthday and left me home across the country. Talking to her and knowing she’s at a bar and drinking makes me extremely angry, and we almost always end up in a fight about it.

I know this is MY problem. Do you have any advice on getting over it? – Doesn’t

Dear Abby: My 7-year-old daughter, “Rosie,” recently came home in tears because a classmate, “Emily,” told her I was a liar and she was an idiot for believing my lies.

Then Rosie asked me if I had been the one putting money under her pillow and presents under the tree all along.

Ultimately, I told her that, yes, I had. But I stressed how important it was that she not ruin other kids’ belief in the tooth fairy, etc.

The cat is out of the bag for my child, but do you think I should mention this to Emily’s mother?

We are friendly, but not close. She lives near me, so I run into her often. I’m not just upset that Emily told Rosie, but also that she was so rude. I don’t want that girl to do this to more kids.

It’s not about criticizing the mother’s parenting skills. My kids need correction sometimes, too. I just believe it takes a village and we should all work together as parents. What are your thoughts? – Cat’s Out of the
