By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The Minooka Village Board unanimously approved at a special meeting Monday night the appointment of Ryan Anderson to superintendent of Public Works.

Anderson’s appointment was made official, although he had stepped in as interim superintendent following the untimely death in September of longtime superintendent Rob Tonarelli.

Anderson has served in the role of assistant superinten-

dent of Public Works under Tonarelli for the past year, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

“On behalf of the board, we are very pleased Ryan stepped up the last few months with the passing of Robbie Tonarelli,” Duffy said.

Anderson previously was with the Morris Public Works Department for 13 years, he said.

He was hired as the assistant superintendent with the long-term goal of moving into the superintendent position after Tonarelli retired.

“Of course, that came sooner than [I] wanted,” Anderson said.

One of Anderson’s biggest challenges will be seeing the vast majority of the public works’ workforce retiring over the next several years. As with many other municipalities, about 70 percent of Minooka’s public works department will be retiring in about five years.

The average age in the department is 58, Anderson said.

The board also unanimously approved the village’s street and bridge levy at 0.10 percent to keep pace with increasing traffic, necessitating an increase in maintenance.

The item was inadvertently left off the previous week’s agenda and needed to be passed prior to the first of the year, Duffy said.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Several common scenes take place in the final hours before Christmas, including neighbors jockeying for position for best Christmas lights, mega retail last-minute deals springing up and shopping malls packed with parents crossing off items on their kids’ gift lists.

It wasn’t always that way.

“When we were kids we put up a manger,” said Plainfield resident Anne Marie Lucchetti, who has a 6-year-old daughter. “Now we put up inflatables.”

While Lucchetti said her family is Catholic, they don’t regularly attend church. That makes it important for her to make sure her daughter knows about the religious aspect of Christmas.

“It is hard for us to explain it’s not just about Santa,” Lucchetti said. “Jesus is the reason for the season.”

Black Friday has expanded to several months of Christmas shopping. And kids grow up learning the Santa gift-giving version of Christmas.

“The meaning of God with us has been forgotten,” the Rev. Bill Beagle, pastor at Plymouth Congregational Church, said about Christmas.

“We lose sight of Christ out of all the things out there.”

Roots forgotten

Christmas was established as a celebration of Jesus’ birth from a pagan holiday known as “The Unconquered Sun,” according to the Rev. Peter Jankowski of St. Patrick’s Church in Joliet. Based on the solstice, the ancient holiday would celebrate the sunlight period of the day beginning to get longer.

“The only time when we think of our fellow man is at a food drive or donation when we should be thinking about God,” Beagle said. “Christmas essentially is a celebration of God.” The Rev. “The purpose is it’s never about ‘me,’ it’s always about taking care of others,” he said.

“As Christ did for us, we do for Christ. As we get loved, we give love.”

Plainfield resident Eva Frediani said the true meaning of Christmas for her was spending time with her family.

This year it was about seeing her daughter who is coming to visit.

“I make a lot of my own gifts. I don’t just buy stuff,” she said. “It has more meaning that way.”

Beagle said that remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice and the urge to help others shouldn’t just be between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but every single day.

‘Christmas’ vs. ‘holiday’

A Christmas tradition

Volunteer effort at St. Joseph’s Church brings back memories

By JAN STEELE LARSEN Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – After the fourth Sunday of Advent, St. Joseph Church on North Chicago Street takes on a new luster.

Volunteers gather for a deep cleaning inside the historic Romanesque edifice and to set up more than 100 red and white live poinsettias, along with lighted trees, roping and a large Nativity scene that features a relative newcomer – a button box player.

“Many ethnicities like to see one of their own represented at the manger,” explained the Rev. Tim Andres on Tuesday as volunteers buzzed around finishing the last few touches. “So for Slovenians, it’s this button-box player we added just two years ago.”

Slovenian immigrants started their first church in Joliet in 1891 and built the existing structure in 1905 out of Bedford stone. It recently underwent a restoration of more than $1 million.

It’s not known when parishioners started decorating the interior with poinsettias (which became known in the United States in the mid1800s). But volunteers like Maryann Papesh McGinnis say it’s happened as long as they can remember.

“Mom [Virginia Papesh] started decorating the church in the early 1970s when her neighbor [Fran Hancock] needed help,” said McGinnis, who’s been involved since she was a toddler.

Her parents married in St. Joseph’s in 1953. Her grandparents on her father’s side came from Slovenia.

“Mom was originally Fran’s worker bee, and then I became mom’s worker bee when I was in grade school,” McGinnis said.

Her mother, a women’s baseball Hall of Famer, died this year and there is a special plant, the only one containing both red and white poinsettias, in her honor.

McGinnis’ daughter, Katie, 11, and son John, 13, also are old hands at unwrapping the plants and assisting where they can.

McGinnis remembers when perhaps only 10 people decorated the church. Now, extra help is asked for – and received.

“We had our biggest crowd, at least 45 people, help clean Saturday,” McGinnis said.

Tuesday’s mix of men and women of all ages gave testament to Andres’ comments that the old church is now growing, adding young families and people of other ethnic backgrounds.

Police Chief Phillip Arnold said about 5:45 p.m. residents reported shots and a man carrying a gun in the 1400 block of North Kankakee Street in Wilmington.

Officers arrived to find Alex T. Smith, 27, outside his residence and questioned him.

“He said he had just gotten a new shotgun and wanted to try it out by shooting at 2-liter pop bottles in the backyard

with his friend,” Arnold said.

When police went to retrieve the shotgun, they also found a baggie of marijuana and a glass pipe, Arnold said.

Arnold said Smith had fired one round and Mark A. Bromley, 20, of Worth, had fired another.

Both men were arrested on a charge of reckless discharge of a firearm and booked into the Will County jail. Smith also was charged with marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Arnold said Smith had a valid firearm owner’s identification card, but the state may choose to revoke it following his arrest.

Will County to start offering text messaging for 911

Will County 911 plans to utilize text messaging for emergency services beginning next year. Chief Administrator Steve Figved said the county will start testing the program at the end of January.

“This is not to replace calling 911 and speaking to a dispatcher,” Figved stressed. “If

you can do that, that’s still going to work the best.”

But Figved believes the deaf, mute and seniors who are hard of hearing – those who might not be able to use 911 otherwise – soon will be able to.

Another ideal texting example would be if someone was unable to get away from someone who would hurt them if they had a verbal conversation with an emergency dispatcher.

If someone sends a text to

911, the dispatcher will engage them in a text conversation to gather additional information for responding police officers and firefighters.

bstanley@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Five people were injured Tuesday morning when a car collided with a UPS truck.

Police Chief Aaron Klima said the crash occurred about 11 a.m. on Route 59 near Meyers Street, south of Route 52.

“It appears the truck was stopped so the driver could make deliveries to residences on Route 59 when a silver Isuzu Trooper slammed into the back of it,” Klima said.

The woman who was driving the Trooper, her husband, who was in the passenger seat, and two children in the back seats were injured. The truck driver also was injured.

“They were all hospitalized with significant injuries, but are expected to survive,” Klima said Tuesday afternoon.

Traffic was snarled for hours as state police traffic investigators reconstructed the crash. Klima said the road was completely reopened around 2:45 p.m.

“It will not work here right now,” Figved noted. “After testing starts, we’ll be promoting it with seniors groups and then schools. It should be [running] at the end of April.”

It’s beginning to look like a white Christmas

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com It looks like it’s going to be a white Christmas.

It’s also likely to be a little wet with temperatures rising Christmas Day after a rainy and snowy Christmas Eve. Forecasts call for anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of snow Wednesday starting in the afternoon. By the time Santa is on the rooftops, it should be apparent how much snow will be on the ground Christmas Day, since the forecast is for snow to stop sometime Wednesday night.

“The white Christmas fans are going to get their wish,” said Jeremy Hylka, director of the Joliet Weather Center.

Hylka said people can expect a heavy, wet snow since it will start out as rain and change to snow as the temperature drops during the day.

“It’s going to be that packing snow,” he said. “On top of the difficult driving, people with heart conditions should be careful shovelling.”

He said there could be lightning and thunder in some areas, as well. Snowbursts could create heavy snow at times, and winds will pick up, which could create white-out conditions in some spots.

The National Weather Service is forecasting anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of snow.

No matter how much snow there is, the chance of precip-

itation on Wednesday is 100 percent, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday is expected to start out rainy with a temperature of 37 degrees, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Temperatures will drop during the day to about 32 degrees. A rain and snow mix is expected to become all snow after 4 p.m. Wind gusts during the snowfall can be as high as 30 mph.

Snow should stop sometime during the night, according to the National Weather Service.

On Christmas Day, temperatures should rise again to as high as 38 degrees. Friday is expected to be even warmer

Spider veins getting you down? You’re not alone.

Spider veins are one of the most common vein problems, especially for women.

They’re commonly found on ankles and behind the knees.

“Although they also can occur at any place on the legs,” said Jessica Knowles of Eterna Med Spa & Laser Vein Center.

Like varicose veins, spider veins are dilated vessels except they are smaller and closer to the skin.

“Varicose veins are in the deeper vein system and are typically much larger than the tiny spider veins you see in your legs,” Knowles said. “It’s very common for the two to go hand in hand, however, this is not always the case. Most people have an indication that they have varicose veins from the small spider veins that pop up on their legs.”

Why do spider veins occur?

“Patients can get spider veins for a lot of different reasons,” Knowles said. “Some

people are just genetically doomed in this department.”

Other risk factors for spider veins include, weight, occupations that require standing for long periods of time, and pregnancy.

So what can people do?

Sclerotherapy is one option. With the technique, a very fine needle injects a solution directly into the veins causing the vein lining to seal preventing blood flow.

“The body’s natural solution is to reabsorb the vein, which does take some time,” Knowles said. “People can typically see results in a couple months.”

Another option is laser therapy. During the treatment, laser energy passes through the top layer of skin to the targeted blood vessel, causing it to slowly heat up and seal itself.

Joe Cook to retire as village president

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Channahon Village President Joe Cook announced he will be retiring after serving as village president for the past 12 years.

“I’ve served the community for the past couple of decades and I’m busy with work and family life so it’s time to retire,” Cook said Tuesday.

Cook served as trustee for six years before being elected as village president.

“When I started as mayor, Route 6 was two lanes of traf-

fic, we had a trailer court at one end of town and farm fields at the other,” he said.

He said the Joe Cook village has seen a large amount of growth and they battled a time when residential growth burdened their school districts, but he is happy with all that has been accomplished.

One person has filed a petition to run for the village’s top office in April: current Trustee Missey Schumacher.

FRANKFORT SQUARE – A tobacco shop owner has been arrested on fraud and tax evasion charges.

Michael A. Menias, 35, was arrested Dec. 17 on 20 counts of filing fraudulent “sales and use” tax returns for Joe’s Tobacco, 7705 W. St. Francis Road.

Menias, of the 19400 block of Waterford Lane in Mokena, also has been charged with one count of tax evasion for failing to report more than $100,000 owed in state taxes between September 2010 and June 2013, according to Illinois Attorney General spokeswoman Maura Possley.

Menias was released from the Will County jail last week after posting $75,000 bond.

Possley said Menias was “responsible for the filing of sales tax returns for [Joe’s Tobacco] and knowingly un-

derstated total receipts ... and the amount of tax due the state.”

Will County court records also show Menias lost residential property on Auburn Lane in Frankfort to foreclosure in September.

On Sept. 28, 2011, a carton of cigarettes and glass pipes were stolen when the tobacco shop was burglarized. Menias was told a regular customer was involved and confronted the then-20-year-old man when he came into the store the next evening, according to police reports.

Will County Sheriff’s police said Menias and his father demanded the customer admit breaking into the store and when he denied it, Menias threatened him with an air pistol that resembled a real handgun.

Menias was arrested and pleaded guilty in 2012 to aggravated assault. He was sentenced to a year of probation.

Preceded in death by her parents, James and Bernice Kinsella; her brother, Lawrence; and sister-in-law, Idan Kinsella; and her most beloved sister, Celeste Kinsella.

Survived by her brother, Don (Lou Ann) Kinsella; her only daughter, Mary Beth Kinsella; her loving grandchildren, James (Alyssa), Justin (Rhiannon), Jessica and Jeremy Larkin; her beloved great-grandchildren; as well as her dearly loved nieces and nephews.

Marjorie spent her childhood in Joliet; she was the third of four children from an Irish Catholic family. Later in life, Marjorie built and shared a home with her cherished sister, Celeste, and her daughter, Mary Beth. Marjorie was an avid business woman who ventured into many different occupations during her years. She attended St. Francis Academy. For several years, she and her sister ran a small popular boutique called the Country House Boutique and Tea Room out of their home. After retirement, Marjorie was always an onthe-go character who enjoyed her time with her dogs, bird watching, but most importantly spending time with her daughter and her large family. She was an extremely enthusiastic, big-hearted individual who centered her life on family. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

Louis Lee Lawson, 63, of Joliet passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014, at his home. Louis was born August 16, 1951, in Centralia, son of Lester Lawson and Christina (Schwartzlander)Lawson.

He is survived by two daughters, Lori Egizio; and husband, Bob of Joliet and Sherri Jones; and husband, Chris of Newtown, PA; five grandchildren, Chase and Kelsey Jones, Alyson, Ashlyn and Celia Egizio; a brother, Ivan Lawson.

Illinois posts rules on medical marijuana for children

CHICAGO – Illinois health officials posted emergency rules Tuesday spelling out how the state’s medical marijuana program will be extended to children.

Patients younger than 18 with certain health conditions, including seizures from epilepsy, will be able to use nonsmokable forms of marijuana under a new law taking effect Jan. 1. Children will need to obtain signatures from two doctors who certify they believe the patient will benefit, according to regulations posted online by the state Department of Public Health.

Adult patients need just one doctor to sign off.

One father who advocated for the new law said requiring two doctors’ signatures is prudent. “There does need to be a different standard for kids,” said Randy Gross of Naperville, whose 8-year-old son Chase suffers from intractable epilepsy and has used marijuana oil in Colorado. “I’m glad they’re protecting kids.”

But Dan Linn, executive director of Illinois NORML, a group advocating changes in marijuana laws, said requiring parents to take their children to two doctors to get signed forms is “an unneeded burden standing between these patients and the medicine they need.”

Driver in October crash that killed nuns was drunk

OAK LAWN – A man who authorities say caused an 11-vehicle crash that killed himself and two nuns in suburban Chicago had a blood-alcohol level more than two times the legal limit.

Sisters Jean Stickney and Kab Kyoung Kim died at the scene.

Stickney was 86, and Kim was 48.

Nearly two dozen other people were injured.

Carthans was driving a pickup truck that crashed into vehicles stopped at a red light in the oncoming lane.

Oak Lawn police said that besides alcohol, excessive speed was a contributing factor.

Unemployment rate falls in all 12 Illinois metro areas

CHICAGO – For the fifth time in the past six months, the unemployment rate dropped in

each of Illinois’ 12 metro areas in November.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security also said Tuesday in its monthly report on metro-level unemployment that the number of jobs grew in just six metro areas.

According to the department, the biggest unemployment improvements were in some of the hardest-hit areas in the state. Decatur’s jobless rate fell from 12.2 percent in November 2013 to 7.9 percent. Unemployment in Rockford dropped from 11.4 percent to 8.1. And the Danville area unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 12.2.

Department Director Jay Rowell said local economies are improving at a “steady, deliberate” pace.

The department said earlier

this month that statewide unemployment dropped to 6.4 percent in November.

Five teenagers shot in drive-by shooting in Chicago

CHICAGO – A gunman firing from a minivan has shot and wounded five teenagers in Chicago.

The shooting took place Monday night in the Englewood neighborhood.

Three girls and two boys were hospitalized. All are 16 or 17 years old.

Chicago police say they were in stable condition as of late Monday night.

No suspects were in custody as of Tuesday morning, and police say the motive remained unclear.

Chicago man gets 26 years for assaulting CTA employee

CHICAGO – A Chicago man has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for sexually assaulting a Chicago Transit Authority employee at gunpoint as she walked home from work.

Twenty-one-year-old Devonte Willis pleaded guilty Monday.

The attack took place as the woman left the Red Line’s 63rd Street station on the South Side.

According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Willis robbed the woman at gunpoint and then sexually assaulted her.

Police arrested him several hours later and found the woman’s cellphone in his possession.

Prosecutors say DNA evidence also linked him to the crime.

Sony re-gifts ‘The Interview’ in limited Christmas release

By JAKE COYLE The Associated Press NEW YORK – “The Interview” was put back into theaters Tuesday when Sony Pictures Entertainment announced a limited Christmas Day theatrical release for the comedy that provoked an international incident with North Korea and outrage over its canceled release.

Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton said Tuesday that Seth Rogen’s North Korea farce “will be in a number of theaters” beginning Thursday. He said Sony also is continuing its efforts to release the film on more platforms and in more theaters.

“We have never given up on releasing ‘The Interview,’ ” Lynton said in a statement Tuesday. “While we hope this is only the first step of the film’s release, we are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech.”

For Sony, the decision was the culmination of a gradual

about-face: After initially saying it had no plans to release the movie, the company began softening its position after it was broadly criticized.

Moviegoers celebrated the abrupt change in fortune for a film that appeared doomed as “The Interview” began popping up in the listings of independent theaters across the country Tuesday, from Atlanta to Los Angeles. The film is set to open in dozens of theaters Thursday, the day it originally was set for wide release.

Sony officials aren’t commenting on whether the film will also be released to video on demand – another possibility.

One of the loudest critics of the film’s shelving, President Barack Obama, hailed Sony’s reversal.

“The president applauds Sony’s decision to authorize screenings of the film,” said Obama spokesman Eric Schultz. “As the president made clear, we are a country that believes in free speech, and the right of artistic ex-

pression. The decision made

by Sony and participating theaters allows people to make their own choices about the film, and we welcome that outcome.”

White House officials declined to elaborate on what role, if any, the White House played in Sony’s decision to reverse itself, but pointed out that Obama had stated publicly that he believed Sony’s earlier decision to cancel the release was a mistake.

Rogen, who stars in the film he co-directed with Evan Goldberg, made his first public comments in a surreal ordeal that began with hackers leaking Sony executives’ emails and culminated in an ongoing confrontation between the U.S. and North Korea. The FBI has said North Korea was behind the hacking attacks.

State has a ‘tin ear’ about airplane fleet REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – Call it the mother of all perks.

Ordinary schmoes like you and me pile into our cars or board a train when we want to travel elsewhere in Illinois.

A plane ride is just too expensive.

But that’s not how state government’s top honchos look at things.

Folks such as Speaker of the House Mike Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and Gov. Pat Quinn are ferried about like chieftains in state-owned executive aircraft.

And they don’t pay for this perk. We do.

In the many years I’ve been covering the statehouse, one of the most sought-after pieces of information each week of legislative session is: When is “Madigan’s plane” taking off?

Madigan staffers and Department of Transportation pilots are milked for this inane piece of minutiae.

Why? Because it’s indicative of when legislative activity will come to a stop and all the reporters, lobbyists and rankand-file legislators can plan on going home, too.

It’s Springfield, where the world revolves around Madigan.

I’ve always found it amusing that the taxpayer-owned King Air is casually referred to as “Madigan’s plane” and not the “state’s plane.”

Last week, Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner answered a question about the state’s air fleet this way: “I’m cheap, I do drive. I am going to drive a lot. I don’t believe the taxpayers should

be funding that large fleet. I think it’s self-indulgent and unnecessary. … But I’ve said it since Day 1: We’ve got to be responsive to the taxpayers, and having the largest fleet in America does not make sense.”

Self-indulgent and unnecessary? Talk about sticking a thumb in Mike Madigan’s eye.

Flying is an expensive proposition. It costs $21 for a state employee to take the train between Chicago and Springfield or about $65 for them to drive, based on the mileage reimbursement rate for state lawmakers.

Earlier this year, I calculated that it costs taxpayers $4,060 when lawmakers or others choose to fly a six-seat executive airplane between the two cities.

Gov. Pat Quinn used the plane the most, booking 21,134 miles in 2013. In 2013, Supreme Court justices booked 14,846 miles on the state plane. In 2013, Illinois lawmakers booked 108,000 miles in the state planes – enough miles to circle the globe four times.

For several years, state Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth, has had a bill pending before the Legislature to pare down the state executive air fleet to one plane, which only the governor would use.

But Madigan and his allies have kept the measure bottled up in committee, never to be voted on by lawmakers.

“Sometimes I’ve been ridiculed about this because last year it cost $7 million and we face such a big hole,” Mitchell said. “I think it is an example of state government having a tin ear.”

Don’t play politics with veterans’ lives Twenty-two veterans a day take their own lives.

There are 150 suicides a week, 600 a month, 8,000 a year.

Those are stats from the office of U.S. Rep. Tim Walz of Minnesota, citing federal Veterans Affairs statistics, provided in a recent attempt of an increasingly admirable and courageous thing – trying to get Congress to approve a sensible bill that saves money and, much more importantly, saves lives.

Too bad, then, that Walz’s bipartisan Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans bill was denied single-handedly by Sen. Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, who refused to let the bill make it to the Senate floor. It’s worth noting the decision came after Walz’s bill passed the House. About Clay Hunt: Hunt was a Marine shot in the hand by a sniper while deployed in Iraq in 2007. He chose to become a sniper himself and deployed to Afghanistan in 2008.

When he returned home, he fought two new battles – one

with post-traumatic stress disorder, the other with the Department of Veterans Affairs, over his disability rating. He killed himself in Houston, Texas, in 2011.

He was far from alone.

So Walz, a 24-year veteran of the Army National Guard and the highest-ranking enlisted soldier to serve in Congress, authored a bill to spend a paltry $22 million to fund an important step toward rebuilding the strength of the nation’s VA hospitals. The act, according to The Washington Post, would create independent evaluations of mental health care and suicide-prevention programs, and court young psychiatrists to lend their talents by offering student loan repayments to those who work for the VA. It also would establish a plan to reclaim prescription medication from VA patients.

Walz himself knew the bill was just one small step toward a brighter future for veterans. In a statement released Monday, he said: “While not a cure-all, this bipartisan bill is designed to help the VA provide better

mental health care services and is overwhelmingly supported by Republicans and Democrats, servicemembers and civilians.”

He added: “I’m greatly disappointed that even this, the most bipartisan of measures, fell victim to politicking.”

Two points there.

One: The bill had broad bipartisan support, yet somehow still fell victim to that politicking.

Two: When ideology wins, everyone loses.

Coburn has something of a reputation for voting down or blocking anything that expands the spending of the federal government, regardless of the cause. He stuck by his ideology and, in so doing, failed both veterans and Congress.

Shameful.

Abiding by the “rules” is ideology. Taking the world as it comes, on a case-by-case basis while framed by the world’s rules – well, that’s humanity. Sometimes, $22 million is just $22 million.

But other times, it represents real lives.

Ditchman, O’Connor capture Dvorak titles

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com MACHESNEY PARK – Although Bryan Ditchman has shown he can dance pretty well, the Lincoln-Way Central heavyweight wouldn’t mind actually wrestling a few matches.

The strategy employed by many against the top returning place-winner at that weight in Class 3A is to trade escapes and then try to prevail in overtime.

That’s just what Marist’s Jake Ford did against Ditchman in Tuesday’s 285-pound title match at Harlem’s Dvorak Memorial Invitational, and it nearly worked.

But with 10 seconds left in overtime, the referee penalized Ford for stalling, and Ditchman received a point to give him a 2-1 victory to cap the state’s top in-season event.

“When a heavyweight can

take 20 shots and not get a single stalling, it’s a little irritating,” Ditchman said. “I used to get frustrated a lot with it, but then I figured that every heavyweight was going to do it – so I just have to stay calm and hope that you get one. It would be nice to be in a match where both kids are actually doing something.

“You obviously need to keep on working harder and harder every day. But I’m very excited about where I am right now. I got a lot of my shots down and have been working on them in every match. I’ve taken 10 to 20 shots in every match, so I just need to keep that up.”

Central’s Sean Kelly trailed Libertyville’s Mark Dunsing, 4-3, heading into the last period of the 220-pound finals, but Dunsing recorded a third-period takedown to wrap up a 6-4 victory.

Also for the Knights, Brandon Dominski (170) took

fourth, Jake Dudeck (182) finished fifth and Vinnie Piunti (120) claimed seventh.

Knights coach Jason DePolo was pleased with his team’s sixth-place effort, which assured it of a trophy in the 29team field.

“Overall, I was absolutely happy with our performance,” DePolo said.

“When you get two kids in the finals in this tournament, you have to feel pretty good.

Tournaments like this are good preparation for where we want to be at the end of the year. This is the time where we’ve tended to pick it up in the last few years, so we’re looking to the guys who’ve been there.”

There was one other champion from the area – St. Rita’s Austin O’Connor, who lives in Lockport. O’Connor received the outstanding-wrestler award after winning the 132 title.

“It was a big step winning this tournament,” O’Connor said. “I still have big tournaments at Lincoln-Way East and the Cheesehead as I try to get a couple of steps closer for state. It’s been a good season so far, and I have a couple of big wins. My conditioning and my feet have improved from last season.”

Lockport, which finished ninth, had two individuals who reached the finals – Shayne Oster (138) and Trevell Timmons (152) – but both settled for second.

In the 132 finals, Oster tied Dakota’s J.J. Wolfe with a reversal late in the second period.

However, Wolfe got an escape just before the buzzer and added a three-point nearfall in the final period to claim a 6-2 win over Oster, who took

third in last year’s event.

Timmons grabbed an early lead over Willowbrook’s Matt Rowland in the 152 finals, but the unbeaten Rowland moved ahead 4-2 after two and went on to capture a 6-3 victory.

“During the whole offseason, I trained almost every day just to get better,” Timmons said. “All of my coaches have helped me, but my dad has helped me a lot, too. He tells me that if I don’t want to place at state and be a kid who was great as a freshman but unknown as a sophomore, then go right ahead and sit on the couch. My dad is really pushing me.”

Also for the Porters, Abdullah Assaf (113) settled for fourth, while Cameron Roat (132) and Chris Murino (195) each took eighth.

Bolingbrook also had a place-winner – Jaime Vega (132), who took seventh after beating Roat in the final match.

Lincoln-Way West tops Yorkville to win Ottawa tourney

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent OTTAWA – It was raining 3’s Tuesday at the Ottawa Holiday Tournament as Lincoln-Way West met Yorkville in the championship game.

The Warriors improved to 12-0 on the season after defeating the Foxes, 61-54, to complete a four-game run through the girls basketball tournament.

West built a 23-14 lead in the first quarter on the shooting of tournament MVP Dani Morgan and Emily Atsinger.

The two combined for 20 of the 23 first-quarter points and hit four consecutive 3-pointers after Yorkville tied the score at 11 with 3:53 remaining.

“Emily and I were really

feeding off each other early and shooting well,” Morgan said. “This MVP award is nice, but it’s about the team success.

We need a team MVP award.

This was a goal, to win the tournament and be 12-0. Now we get a few days off.”

Warriors coach Ryan White was pleased with the way his squad forced Yorkville to get away from its strength, its play inside.

“We watched Yorkville play, and we knew about their good inside game,” White said. “We were willing to let them shoot from the outside and stop them inside. We did a very good job of that today.”

West built the lead to 28-14 to start the second quarter, but the Foxes (11-2) scored eight

consecutive points to make it 28-22.

A timeout with three minutes left in the half seemed to settle down the Warriors, and Atsinger and Morgan hit 3-point shots to help their team to a 36-27 halftime lead.

“We are a very good full-throttle team, but we have little lapses, so we must keep that intensity and aggressive style up at all times,” White said.

That intensity and aggressive style were in full force in the third quarter when the Warriors limited Yorkville to four points on 2-of-11 shooting.

Atsinger hit two 3-pointers to start the quarter, and fellow sophomore Courtney O’Donnell added six points from the

inside. The two sophomores accounted for 15 of the Warriors’ 17 third-quarter points to help them to a 53-31 lead.

Atsinger, who led the Warriors with 27 points, made the All-Tournament team, along with senior point guard Deven Bax. Morgan tossed in 15 points and O’Donnell ended with 10 points. The Warriors hit 10 3-pointers for the game.

“This is my first all-tournament team, and it feels really good,” Atsinger said. “But my team assisted in every way with this award. I felt really good shooting the three today, and that is our team – if we are open, we shoot.”

Great ball movement, crisp passing and running time off the clock was the West plan in

the fourth quarter as Yorkville tried to climb back. The Foxes hit a 3-point shot, stole the inbound pass and scored again at the buzzer to bring the final margin to seven points.

“When Deven (Bax) and Dani (Morgan) got into foul trouble early, Emily and Courtney really stepped up, along with our bench – as they have been all season,” White said. “We did an excellent job of anticipating passes and taking advantage of our quickness. We have that ability to put together two or three good spurts during a game that can really turn things in our favor.”

Yorkville was led by Audry Macciomei, who had 19 points, while Katie Nolan added 18.

Almost 24 hours after suffering a heartbreaking 35-33 Medieval Classic loss to New Lenox rival Providence, Lincoln-Way Central showed that song to be prophetic, as it gave a heartbreaking 38-36 loss to District 210 rival Lincoln-Way East.

With 22.7 seconds left, Knight junior guard Rebecca Gorman (nine points) calmly

sank two free throws to extend Central’s lead to 38-34. But with 12.7 seconds left, East junior Quinn Madden (12 points) hit a jumper to pull the Griffins to within 38-36.

But following two missed free throws, the Griffins turned the ball back over to the Knights with 1.1 second left, and Central had its first Medieval Classic victory.

What a difference a day made.

“We have great kids who really deserve this win,” Central coach Chris Fetherling said. “What a 24-hour period.

A 35-33 loss and then a 38-36 win. I guess it all evens out in

the end. We have 12 girls who work really hard. Rebecca (Gorman) hit the two big free throws we needed for the win.

Sophomore Hayley Holmes played like a senior, and Jenna Meyers was our spark in the third quarter.”

In a tightly contested first half, Lincoln-Way East (54) grabbed a 18-17 lead at the break. The Griffins were led by center Anna Rose (16 points, six rebounds), who had six of her game-high 16 points in the first half. Gorman picked up seven of her nine points for the Knights (4-5).

“I played very well on defense tonight and had a good

first quarter,’’ Gorman said.

“This was a great victory for us, and I feel good about hitting the two game-winning free throws. If we play as we did tonight, we will be successful against Bremen and have a shot at the tournament championship, if we can get some help from East.”

Central’s Jenna Meyers exploded for seven third-quarter points. She buried a long-range 3-point bomb, and her old-fashioned three-point play with 47 seconds left in the quarter put the Knights up, 27-24, after three quarters.

Holmes led the Knights with 11 points and six rebounds.

Central’s leading scorer for the season, Candace Finnin (18 points per game), scored only six points but hauled down a game-high nine rebounds.

“I play hard all the time when I am on the floor,” Holmes said. “I am very happy with my performance tonight, and it was great to finally beat East. We hadn’t done so in two years.”

The Knights face winless Bremen at 4 p.m. Friday in a Pool B finale. With a win, the Knights would improve to 2-1 in the tournament. East faces Providence at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

FRANKFORT – Survive and advance. In any tournament, that is the team goal for every school. And Minooka did just that Tuesday.

Seeing a 12-point fourth quarter lead evaporate, the Indians rallied past Plainfield South, 59-58, to improve to 2-0 in tournament play.

With 11.1 seconds left in the game and South (4-8, 0-2) ahead, 58-57, Sydney Arlis drove to the hoop and powered home a bucket for the game-winner. Arlis, who was the third Indian to foul out, finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“My teammates have faith in me to help us win,” Arlis said. “I wanted the ball, and I was determined to win the game for my teammates, who help me be successful. It was a real exciting game, and we played well in the first half, but then we had a bad stretch in the second half.

“Our bench really stepped up for us, and it was a great win. If we can defeat Lincoln-Way North on Friday, we will play for the tournament championship on Saturday night.”

“We played well in the first half, and they really came back at us in the second half, “Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. “We never had three girls foul out in the game before. Sydney is our leader and played like it, scoring the game-winner and the last four points of the game. Brooke is something special in the open court, and she’s only a sophomore. Emily had a great first half for us and had a great allaround game.”

Minooka meets Lincoln-Way North in a Pool A finale at 2:30 p.m. Friday. A win would advance the Indians to the tournament championship at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Youth Baseball Camp: The Romeoville High School base-

ball staff, led by coach Dave Haskins, is offering a sixweek indoor winter hitting camp that provides instruction using drills, fundamentals, situational hitting and a hitting philosophy aimed to improve skills.

The camp will be separated into two groups – second- to fifth-graders and sixth- through eight-graders – and goes for an hour per camp session.

The camps will run every Sunday starting from Jan. 11 to Feb. 22; the cost of the league is $50 a person.

Rose’s 25 leads Bulls in win The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Derrick Rose scored 25 points and Pau Gasol had 18 as the Bulls won their fourth straight, beating the Washington Wizards, 9991, on Tuesday night.

After Washington scored 12 straight – 10 by John Wall – to take an 87-86 lead with 3:44 remaining, the Bulls steadied and scored eight straight – six

by Rose to lead, 94-87, with 1:48 to play.

Wall led the Wizards with 18 points.

The Bulls outrebounded Washington, 52-41.

On Monday, the Bulls scored a franchise-record 49 points in the fourth quarter

as they beat Toronto, 129-120.

Points were harder to come by a night later.

It was the first meeting of the teams this season. Washington defeated the Bulls in the first round of last year’s playoffs, 4-1.

Rose and Wall faced each other for just the fifth time and the first since Jan. 30, 2012, because Rose had been injured for most of the past two seasons.

The Bulls have won each of the five games.

Gasol made his first 3-pointer of the season at the first quarter horn, and Rose hit one as the second quarter ended to give the Bulls a 46-40 lead.

NIU loses third straight bowl game

By SHAW MEDIA BOCA RATON, Fla. – Northern Illinois was on the losing end of its bowl game for the third straight season.

The Huskies came into Tuesday’s Boca Raton Bowl riding a seven-game winning streak and coming off their third MAC title in four years.

On Tuesday, however, NIU didn’t have what it takes to beat another one of the nation’s top Group of Five programs, as Marshall topped NIU, 52-23.

The Huskies (11-3) couldn’t keep up with the Thundering Herd’s (13-1) fast-paced attack led by quarterback Rakeem Cato. Cato threw for 281 yards

and three touchdowns. Marshall wideout Tommy Shuler had 18 catches for 185 yards and a score. Tailback Devon Johnson had 15 carries for 131 yards.

“They’re good. Like I said, I think we had the things to stop them, I don’t think we executed to stop them,” NIU coach Rod Carey said.

Start the day with sweet and savory

By J.M. HIRSCH The Associated Press Like Thanksgiving, Christmas is one of those holidays that requires aroma.

On Thanksgiving, we need the house to smell of turkey and stuffing and sweet potatoes. On Christmas, we need whiffs of indulgent breakfast items, like cinnamon rolls or a bubbling fruit crisp. Or maybe you prefer hash browns and bacon. Those get the job done nicely, too.

This year I wanted both

sweet and savory, so I created this baked pancake inspired by an upside down cake. For ease, this dish can be partly prepped the night before.

Bacon-Apple Baked Pancake Start to finish: 45 minutes Servings: 4 ¾ cup whole milk 1 egg 1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1½ teaspoons baking powder Kosher salt 1 large apple 8 strips bacon ¼ cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. In a blender, combine the milk, egg, oil and vanilla. Blender until smooth. With the blender running on low, sprinkle in the flour, sugar, baking powder and ½ teaspoon salt. Stop blending as soon as the mixture is smooth. Set aside.

Use an apple corer or melon baller to core the apple, but leave the fruit intact. Set the apple on its side, then cut it into thin round slices.

Set aside.

Heat a large oven-safe skillet over medium. Add the bacon and cook for 6 to 7 minutes on one side.

Spoon out and discard about half of the fat in the pan, then turn the bacon strips to cook on the other side, laying them flat and evenly over the bottom of the pan.

Top the bacon with the apple slices, arranging them evenly. Cover the pan and cook for 2 minutes.

Mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon and a pinch of salt, then sprinkle the mixture over the apples. Carefully and evenly pour the pancake batter over the apples and bacon. Place the skillet in the oven and bake until lightly browned and cooked through, about 20 minutes.

Let the pancake cool for 5 minutes.

Use a paring knife to loosen the edges of the pancake, then overturn a large serving plate over the skillet.

Invert the skillet to release the pancake onto the plate. Cut into wedges.

Close out Christmas with decadent lobster manicotti

It’s rich and comforting and – particularly in the case of our lobster manicotti – decadent without being fussy.

We start our manicotti with a lobster and ricotta cheese filling, but if lobster is too much trouble (or not in the budget) just substitute cooked and peeled shrimp. You also could make this dish vegetarian by skipping the seafood entirely and using well-drained chopped and cooked spinach.

Whatever you use, a zippy –

but not scorching – fra diavolo sauce ties everything together wonderfully.

And to help keep your holiday running smoothly, this dish can be prepared the night before and refrigerated until ready to bake.

Lobster Manicotti Fra Diavolo Start to finish: 1 hour Servings: 5

2 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium yellow onions, chopped 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (more or less, to taste) 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced

28-ounce can crushed fire-roasted tomatoes 2 tablespoons lemon juice Kosher salt and ground black pepper 7 ounces cooked lobster meat, drained, patted dry and roughly chopped (about 1 mounded cup) 1 cup whole-milk ricotta cheese ¼ cup chopped fresh basil, plus extra for garnish 8-ounce box wide lasagna noodle sheets (10 sheets) Grated romano cheese (optional) In a medium saucepan over medium-high, heat the oil. Add the onion and cook until tender and beginning to brown, 6 to

8 minutes. Transfer half of the onions to a medium bowl. Add the red pepper flakes and garlic to the saucepan and continue to cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the tomatoes and cover. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir in the lemon juice, then season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Add the lobster, ricotta and basil to the bowl of onion. Stir to combine, then season with salt and pepper.

Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Spread ½ cup of the sauce over the bottom of a 9-by-9-inch baking dish.

Cook the pasta in the boiling water according to package directions,

then drain well. Working quickly and carefully with one sheet of pasta at a time, lay a pasta sheet flat in front of you. Spoon ¼ cup of the lobster-ricotta filling across the bottom edge of the pasta sheet. Roll the pasta away from you, forming a tube around the filling. Lay the rolled and filled pasta (manicotti) on the sauce in the baking dish.

Repeat with the remaining pasta sheets, filling and lining the manicotti in a row in the prepared pan.

Spoon the remaining sauce over the tops of the manicotti. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling and browning around the edges. Serve topped with basil and grated romano, if desired.

But the point made by the Harvard School of Public Health study is just how good for you these lifestyle practices are. For example, there are no medicines yet invented that can double your chance of successful aging, as we’ve defined it.

Yet regular exercise can do that. Studies of hundreds of thousands of people over their adult lifetimes prove that a healthy lifestyle can do more for successful aging than any medical technology. And even though this study involved women, other studies find that healthy lifestyle is just as beneficial for men.

Dear Doctor K: Can you boil down all of the health advice out there? What do I need to do to age successfully?

Dear Reader: Wow, that’s a tall order. Thirty years ago, when I heard people talk about “successful aging,” they were talking about avoiding disease and living longer.

These days, we want more. Of course we want to live long, disease-free lives. But we also want to be physically fit and functional. We want to stay emotionally healthy. And we want our minds and memories to remain sharp.

In fact, a growing number of my patients, and my friends, tell me they want to have a long life only if the extra years fit this description. As one patient said to me, “I want to prolong my life, so long as I don’t also prolong my decrepitude.”

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health set out to determine the impact a healthy lifestyle could have on aging. They analyzed data collected from the Nurses’ Health Study of more than 100,000 women to estimate how a healthy lifestyle at midlife influenced aging decades later. They defined successful aging as reaching age 70 while meeting these four criteria: • no major chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes or cancer; • no cognitive impairment, meaning memory loss or worsening of basic thinking skills; • no major disabilities that limit the ability to walk around freely and conduct normal daily activities; • no major problems with mental health, such as anxiety or depression.

Here’s what they found: HIGH-QUALITY DIET. Women who stuck closest to a healthy diet boosted their odds of successful aging by 34 percent. A healthy diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish.
