Former Diocese of Joliet bishop dies

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joseph Imesch, who served as bishop of the Diocese of Joliet for 40 percent of its history, died Tuesday morning at age 84.

Imesch left a legacy of supporting women’s and gay rights in the Catholic Church but also criticism of his response to allegations of sex abuse by clergy in the diocese.

I m e s c h Bishop served as bish- Joseph op of the diocese Imesch for 40 percent of its history, diocesan officials said in a statement. His years of service were marked by “great change and population growth which he managed well.” The diocese includes DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee and Will counties.

“Bishop Imesch led with conviction and compassion and used his many talents generously,” Bishop R. Daniel Conlon said in the statement.

“As we celebrate the coming of Christ in this season and, at the same time, commend Bishop Imesch to the love and mercy of God, his episcopal motto seems especially appropriate: The Lord Is Near. May he be near the Lord for all eternity.”

Imesch was ordained in 1956 in Rome, and became the Joliet Diocese’s third bishop Aug. 28, 1979, after serving as auxiliary bishop of Detroit and regional bishop of the Northwest Region.

Imesch was a supporter of women’s rights and acceptance of gays by the church. Under his leadership, the Joliet Diocese sponsored speakers advocating for the inclusion of gay Catholics. As bishop also appointed women to key administrative posts traditionally held by men.

Before he retired from the diocese in 2006, he was noted for having a likable personality and warm sense of humor.

However, he also faced criticism in the early 2000s for his response to reports of sex abuse of minors by clergy in the diocese.

This year, the Diocese of Joliet agreed to pay $4.14 million to settle sex-abuse claims made by 14 men, according to the law firms representing the plaintiffs. The incidents occurred during the 1960s through the 1980s and involved five priests.

The incidents took place when Bishop Romeo Blanchette – who has died – and Imesch oversaw the diocese.

Lawyers released last year a 2005 deposition that showed Imesch conceding under questioning that he sometimes allowed priests to stay on or transferred them as allegations they sexually abused children arose. A 2005 deposition also showed Imesch admitted he withheld information from authorities about clerics accused of sex crimes.

New Lenox orders designs for revamped concert venue

By SARWAT S. AHMAD Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – As New Lenox’s annual Triple Play concert series continues to be successful, the village is looking toward making improvements to its amphitheater to accommodate bigger shows.

The Village Board on Monday approved engineering and architectural design proposals totaling almost $30,000 as part of its plans to renovate the New Lenox Commons’ outdoor concert venue adjacent to the Village Hall.

The village will pay Tria Architecture Inc. $19,850 to design three blueprint options with additional seating and a more modernized and wider stage to accommodate larger acts, as well as a separate structure that will house a green room, dressing rooms and offices.

It also will pay Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. $9,900 to devise the engineering plans necessary for the project.

The current stage, built in 2006, was not constructed with programs such as the Triple Play concert series in mind, Mayor Tim Baldermann said.

The village “has lost quite a few artists” because the stage cannot accommodate their lighting and video equipment requirements, he said. The open sides also are unsafe for electrical equipment during inclement weather, he said, and the new stage will be enclosed on the sides.

Also, the village currently rents trailers for the artists that sit in the Commons area for the whole summer and are “unsightly,” he added.

“We’re not looking to do anything more than what we need to do to make sure the

space is large enough and safe enough for whatever future plans the village would have in mind,” Baldermann said after the meeting.

Baldermann brought the series to the village in 2009 as a way to fund the free events – such as the Christmas in the Commons, Kidsfest and movie nights – held in the Commons, he said. This past summer, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Steve Miller Band played to sold-out crowds. Kenny Loggins also was scheduled to play, but the village had to end the concert after the opening act due to severe thunderstorms.

Approval for the plans will probably not come to the board until early spring, with construction possibly moving forward in fall 2016, Baldermann said. He hopes that the new stage will be ready in time for the 2017 Triple Play series.

Imesch retired from the diocese in 2006, as he had reached the mandatory retirement age of 75.

Imesch was born in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. He received a bachelor’s degree from Sacred Heart Seminary High School and College in Detroit and a licentiate in sacred theology from the North American College in Rome.

Funeral arrangements were still being made as of Tuesday, according to the diocese.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – When Plainfield resident Pam Dore retired about two-and-a-half years ago, one of her goals was to learn how to knit.

When she heard in April that a new knitting supplies shop opened in downtown Plainfield on Lockport Street, she decided to take a look.

“I finally found a place that might help me out,” Dore, 59, said of Elemental Yarns, which opened at 24123 Lockport St. Eight months later, she still classifies herself as a novice knitter. But she wears the skill level as a “badge of honor” as she partakes in the shop’s weekly Tuesday morning knit club, one of several social groups that have popped up around Plainfield in recent years and given residents a forum to talk about topics ranging from cross-stitching to national politics and fashion.

Knitting skills, benefits

Knitting has been linked to being beneficial for the mind.

A 2012 National Institutes of Health study found that craft activities, including knitting, resulted in a 30 percent to 50 percent decrease in odds of mild cognitive impairment, otherwise known as incipient dementia. Knitting also is known to engage several parts of the brain at once, and it has characteristics similar to meditative activities.

Knitting clubs such as the one Dore frequents allow women and men to learn how to continue to knit, with the most popular demographic women are 50 and older.

The group meeting at Elemental Yarns includes about eight to 10 women of all skill levels.

“It’s just a wonderful feeling to come in here on Tuesdays,” 79-year-old Oswego resident Elizabeth Cherry said.

“I live out in the farm and there is nobody there during the day. So it’s kind of nice to have a place to come once a week.”

Many of the more skilled knitters often help the novices learn the tips and tricks of the craft.

“You’re more encouraged to continue knitting when you’re in a group,” Cherry said.

Plainfield resident Carla Baker, who has been knitting for almost 45 years and often helps beginners with their proj-

ects at Elemental Yarn, said patience is an important skill.

“However you go, even if you’re a faster knitter, it’s not a race,” Baker said. “If you have some issues, everybody helps each other.”

Knitting clubs may meet once a week, but knitting is a daily activity for many in these groups.

“You only knit on days ending in ‘y,’ ” said 54-yearold Shorewood knitter Billie Youngquist, who was knitting a child’s dress last week.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – MorningStar Mission on Tuesday morning provided hundreds of families with Christmas gifts.

The flurry of activity took place at the Joliet nonprofit as volunteers unloaded bags of gifts from trucks and stored them inside the MorningStar Mission building.

Families formed a long line at the building to receive them. MorningStar Mission annually gives families in need Christmas gifts as part of the Stars of Hope program, volunteer coordinator Robin Johnston said.

“The biggest reward is seeing a mom’s face when they know they have something to give for Christmas,” she said.

Families also received food and winter clothes.

Johnston said 374 families were being served Tuesday, and they were assisted by 80 volunteers.

Johnston said that if people are interested in making more donations to families after Christmas, there is a need for nonperishable food, hygiene products and children’s jackets.

MorningStar Mission also released a 2015 Christmas Book of Hope on its website, morningstarmission.org, with a catalog of frequently needed items. Some of those items include socks, underwear, laundry detergent and reading glasses.

Some of the volunteers Tuesday came from Three Rivers Association of Realtors and True Deliverance Apostolic Ministries in Plainfield.

“We like to volunteer to give service hours to the community we serve,” said Joyce Zelazik, board director of Three Rivers Association of Realtors.

Teresa Davis, a True Deliverance Apostolic Ministries missionary, said she believes Jesus Christ is the “reason for the season,” but gift giving also is a part of the season.

“It’s such a pleasure to be a part of it,” she said.

Tasha Straughter, another MorningStar Mission volunteer, brought her three sons to the gift-giving event. She wanted them to help and communicate with others in need.

She said it was “awesome and so rewarding” to see all the donations come in for families. Straughter would hug visitors after they received their gifts.

“They don’t expect you to give hugs,” she said.

It’s a wonderful program, Zelazik said.

“When you see the look on the kids’ faces and the grace in people’s eyes, that’s rewarding,” she said.

WILMINGTON – Most city parks in Wilmington are now entirely tobacco-free, thanks to two local high school students’ advocacy and a supportive City Council.

Members of the council earlier this month unanimously passed an ordinance that prohibits the use of all tobacco products, including but not limited to cigarettes, e-cigarettes, pipes, cigars and chewing tobacco, according to a Will County Health Department news release.

Parks that will be 100 percent tobacco free include Northcrest, Veterans Memorial and Brookside.

Under the new ordinance, the north and south parks within the Wilmington Island Park District will not be completely tobacco free, but both parks have will tobacco-free zones, including athletic fields, restrooms, playgrounds and concession and spectator areas, according to the release.

Two Wilmington High School students – including Elizabeth Palkoska, 18 – have for some time been advocating for tobacco-free parks.

They observed smokers’ park activity, conducted surveys and presented findings several times to the council, Palkoska said.

“We thought this would be the best thing for the community,” she said. “I know smokers in Wilmington aren’t happy with it, but this wasn’t for them. We surveyed youth and they said they wanted to see a tobacco-free park.”

City Administrator Tony Graf said Monday that the

students were key to the ordinance’s passage.

At one meeting, the teenagers even brought to the council a bag filled with used cigarette butts found within various parks.

“The fact that this will cut back on litter, too ... that really resonated with aldermen,” Graf said. “It really came down to the presentations and the information they provided. It seemed like the right thing to do.”

The students were representing Reality Illinois, an anti-tobacco campaign focused on policy change, secondhand smoke and tobacco industry manipulation. The campaign was created by the Illinois Department of Public Health and local health departments.

Will County Health Department Executive Director John Cicero said in the news release the teens deserve credit for their diligence and advocacy.

“They were involved every step of the way. The health department congratulates them, the City Council and everyone who has helped make this ordinance reality.

Wilmington is now a healthier community,” Cicero said.

According to the 2014 Illinois Youth Survey, one in three Wilmington High School seniors used tobacco in the month preceding the survey. According to Wilmington’s Reality Illinois data, the average age for a firsttime user is 13.5 years.

Wilmington is the 20th Will County municipality with some type of smoke-free or tobacco-free park policy in place, according to the news release.

6 Rialto authority OKs 2 hires, including director of development

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The authority that oversees the money-troubled Rialto Square Theatre has approved two appointments, including a development director in charge of fundraising.

The Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority recently signed off on the hires, which will take effect Jan. 1, according to a

news release.

Jack Ericksen, the longtime senior development officer for Catholic Charities of Joliet, will join the theater’s administrative staff as the director of development, while David J. Silverman, a partner with the firm Mahoney, Silverman & Cross LLC, will become the next general counsel.

Ericksen will likely be charged with raising dollars for a new theater marquee.

Production of a new sign was stopped amid opposition to a design that would have included a tribute to the parents of Ed Czerkies, who donated $350,000 toward the marquee project.

The retired Joliet businessman withdrew his donation, announced in November 2014, when the WCMEAA would not commit in early 2015 to his parents’ names staying on the marquee.

The Rialto Square Theatre

was the subject of possible budget cuts in recent City Council discussions. This week, however, the council approved a budget with the full $600,000 subsidy requested by the theater.

“Jack has a great knowledge of our community from which he will work with the Rialto Square Theatre Foundation Board of Directors in raising funds to support the historic Rialto Square Theatre,” general manager Randy Green said

in the news release. “I am looking forward to working with Jack as we chart a course that will raise funds to address the 90-year-old theater’s capital needs and support our efforts to expand our programming for the community.”

Silverman will fill the general counsel role vacated by Thomas E. Carey, who is retiring after serving for the WCMEAA’s legal counsel since the late 1970s.

Will County State’s Attorney’s Office appointed to Lee County case

By KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ Shaw Media correspondent DIXON – The office of the Will County state’s attorney will represent the state in the prosecution of Lee County State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller, who is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The case is being heard by Judge Val Gunnarsson. A pretrial hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. Jan. 15, Lee County court

The state’s appellate prosecutors office has taken over the duties in the Lee County State’s Attorney’s Office while the case is pending, said Charles Pelkie, spokesman for Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow. The office agreed “strictly as a courtesy” to the appellate prosecutors office, he added.

“That office felt it would be a conflict for them to handle this particular prosecution

while serving in this role,” Pelkie said. “An assistant from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office will assume prosecution of this case as a courtesy to the appellate prosecutors office.”

Sacco-Miller, 48, is representing herself, she has said.

She is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content above 0.08 and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, all misdemeanors.

Police say she fell asleep at the

wheel and struck a parked car about 7 a.m. Nov. 15 in the 500 block of East Fellows Street in Dixon. No one was injured.

Sacco-Miller admitted publicly that her blood-alcohol content was 0.1, apologized for her actions and said she will not seek re-election. She took a leave of absence and entered a rehab program during the first week of December, and has not yet told Lee County Board members if she will resign when her treatment ends, pre-

Man shot in buttocks in Joliet News to your phone

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man was shot in the buttocks while standing on a Joliet street Monday, police said.

Joliet Police Lt. Jeff Allbert said authorities were called at 8 p.m. to the 800 block of Junie Court.

“Three people had been standing around when a

man wearing an orange or red sweatshirt fired at them from down the street and fled,” Allbert said.

One man was struck in the buttocks and was treated for a wound that was not life-threatening, Allbert said.

The other two people were not injured.

CHANNAHON – Village trustees Monday set the 2015 property tax levy at $2.166 million – an increase of 8.04 percent over last year’s tax extension for Channahon residents.

The amount would correspond to a tax rate of 0.7529.

The village’s current rate is 0.7208.

Finance Director Heather Wagonblott told trustees owners of a $200,000 home would see an increase of $21.40 on the village’s portion of their property tax bills this coming year.

Wagonblott and Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher said the higher levy is necessary to get finances back to healthy levels post-recession. Schumacher added that with development picking up, more funds also will be needed to improve services.

“We took a $104,000 hit last year,” she said. “We cut staff over the last several years – significantly.”

Channahon kept its tax rate flat in 2014. Village finances also were heavily impacted by an Illinois Department of Revenue decision that led to the village no longer receiving tax revenues from a sales tax loophole that allowed Chicago businesses to route sales through satellite offices in Channahon.

Wagonblott said the levy amount chosen by the Village Board would bring the village $160,000 more than the extension brought in two years ago.

“We have services to provide,” said trustee Sam Greco, who voted for the levy amount.

Greco said the increase was necessary and will have “minimal impact” on homeowners.

Trustee Scott Slocum also voted for the levy amount, saying it will give residents a better quality of life while keeping

Defendant-lawyer Going on denied subpoena of mental records

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Homer Glen attorney accused of trying to hire out his wife’s killing from the Will County jail can’t subpoena an informant’s psychiatrist, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Robert W. Gold-Smith, 53, who is representing himself Robert W. o n s o l i c i t a - Gold-Smith tion of murder charges, wanted to use Brian K. McDaniel’s psychiatric records at his upcoming trial.

McDaniel, who has an extensive criminal history, wore a wire for Will County sheriff’s investigators when he and Gold-Smith were locked up in jail.

In November 2010, GoldSmith‘s then-wife sought an order of protection after he grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the face as they walked out of a courtroom, police said. He has been locked up since March 2011 for violating that order of protection and began approaching jail inmates to have her killed, according to prosecutors.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Capelli said it’d be up to a jury to weigh McDaniel’s account of what happened five years ago,

but Gold-Smith argued the records validate how McDaniel should be characterized.

“You’re forgetting. ... I’ve reviewed your psychiatric records [at your request],” Judge Daniel Rozak told GoldSmith. “Your motion [on what’s in McDaniel’s] sounds familiar – bipolar, prior acts of violence, drug abuse, alcohol.”

“If you really want to go down this road [to get them in], what’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” Rozak said.

But Gold-Smith believes the gander don’t have the same rights under the Constitution. After the judge denied the motion, Gold-Smith said he would offer additional evidence next week to support his argument.

Gold-Smith also believes the jail staff have had doctors change his medication to “sabotage his case.”

“I’m not a medical doctor.

What do you want me to do?”

Rozak asked.

“Be patient with me,” Gold-Smith said, indicating his “recall and ability to be assertive [have been] compromised” from the change in medication.

“I think I’ve been very good at my patience with you, Mr. Gold-Smith,” Rozak said.

“I could say the same, judge,” Gold-Smith replied.

Elemental Yarns owner Cindy Cooper moved the shop in April from Shorewood off Route 59 to downtown Plainfield because she felt the visibility in downtown Plainfield was much more attractive.

“It has been a good move for us,” Cooper said. “Downtown has wonderful shopping, restaurants and specialty stores. It fit well.”

Plainfield also is a more central spot for many of Cooper’s customers, who come from neighboring towns such as Naperville, Oswego and Joliet.

“I believe there is more interest [in knitting] here,” Cooper said.

Knitting club members also frequent the shops and restaurants downtown, providing a boost to the local economy.

Several other weekly knitting groups meet around town in various locations.

The Plainfield Public Library has a Social Stitch club for knitters and crochet-

ers that meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. every Tuesday.

Another knitting club, Slip Knots of Plainfield, meets Thursday evenings at the Panera Bread at Route 59 and 127th Street.

The Slip Knots have been organizing through a social media website called Ravelry.com since 2008.

Ravelry.com has become a central place for knitters worldwide to form social clubs. More than 30 groups, some now defunct, are within 20 miles of Joliet, according to the website.

“It’s just like a Facebook for knitters,” said Plainfield resident Vicky Polito, one of the founding members of the Slip Knots.

Polito said groups are formed over a wide range of commonalities, from individuals who talk about their cosplay lives to men-only knitting clubs to groups that make only scarves.

There also are groups for beginners, such as Dore, who was observing as Baker helped her knit socks last week.

For Dore, the knitting club at Elemental Yarns gave her a place to be that was fun, educational and social at the same time.

“I’m very happy that I learned to knit and I found this,” Dore said. “It’s a great place to be every Tuesday.”

OBITUARIES JOHN A. BAJT John A. Bajt, age 90, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, December 22, 2015.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Eleanor (nee Szepelak); loving children, Denise (Jim) Gray and Bill (Teresa) Bajt; cherished grandchildren, Jeff (Jennifer) Gray and Debra (John) Ford, Kelly Lynn (Matthew) Boley and Mary Jo (Ian) Botnick; cherished great-grandchildren, Kaeli, John Jr., Camryn, Adyson, Madelyn, and William; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Antonia (nee Grabach) Bajt; and brother, Louis (Helen) Bajt.

John worked for many years at Beutel Motors and Meadow Gold Dairy. John and Eleanor were charter parishioners of St. Mary Magdalene before the church was constructed. He was an usher for over 20 years and was also a member of St. Mary Magdalene Holy Name Society.

WARREN LEE EDDY Warren Lee Eddy “Poppy,” age 79. Peacefully Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice home following a 16-year courageous battle with cancer. He has found his victory in eternity with his loving Lord.

Born in Joliet and a lifelong Joliet area resident. Retired from Olin Chemical Company after over 30 years of service as the accounting manager. Warren, known to his family and friends as “Poppy,” was the ultimate dad. He was the orga-

nizer, “rallying the troops” for the impromptu neighborhood baseball and football games. He loved life whether it was working in the yard, taking a camping trip or just sitting on the back porch enjoying his family at play.

Preceded by his parents, Ted and Vivian (nee Ostrem) Eddy; and one sister, Elaine Nemanich.

Survived by his loving soul mate celebrating 57 years of marriage, Jonetta Eddy of Joliet; his beloved daughter, Dawn (Colin) Carter of Plainfield; his loving son, Lee (Sarah) Eddy of Roselle, IL; the light and the spirit of his life, the two people that brought him so much joy and appreciation were his grandchildren, Devin Carter of Plainfield and Bryton Eddy of Roselle.

G. VIVIAN RICHARDI G. Vivian Richardi (nee Bausano), age 85, of Joliet, died Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born in Joliet and graduated from Providence Catholic High School, Class of 1948. Worked in Chicago before her marriage to Raymond in 1954. Vivian embraced the life of an Army wife and supported Raymond as he made the Army his career. Upon his retirement, they settled in Joliet and spent count-

less hours volunteering, mainly at St. Ambrose Church and School, St. Francis and Joliet Catholic High School. Vivian was inducted in the First Class of Honorary Alumni at St. Francis Academy. A member of Women’s Auxiliary VFW #367 and St. Joseph Hospital.

Left to cherish many loving memories are her two daughters, Stephanie (Ken) Sweigard of North Olmsted, OH, and Melanie Richardi (Wendell Drummond) of Joliet; and proud “Ma” to her four grandchildren, Kati Scarlett Sweigard of Nakatsugawa, Japan, Jared Anthony Sweigard, student at The Ohio State University, Andrew Joseph Drummond, December, 2015 graduate of University of Dubuque, and Timothy Raymond Drummond, student at University of Dubuque.

Also survived by her sister, Mary Kay (John) Brozovich.

Preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Raymond Anthony Richardi (2000); her parents, Louis and Catherine Bausano; and her brother, Robert Bausano.

EILEEN L. SHINER Born: Jan. 28, 1935 Died: Dec. 8, 2015

Eileen Lorraine (O’Brien) Shiner passed away peacefully on December 8, 2015, in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Eileen was born January 28, 1935, to Frank and Edith May (Sharpe) O’Brien and grew up in Haydenville, Williamsburg, Massachusetts.

After graduating high school, she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a stenographer for the AF command in Puerto Rico. While in the Air Force, she married AF Band musician, John (Jack) Shiner, Jr. on April 3rd, 1954 at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

Using the GI Bill, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in social work from St. Francis College in Joliet while raising their family in Joliet.

Upon graduation, she worked as a social worker for various agencies and volunteered for the Joliet Hospice organization.

Eileen was an avid reader, loved to play Euchre, and enjoyed dancing.

She is survived by 3 sons, John Shiner (Nancy) of Batavia, IL, Patrick Shiner (Cathy) of Crest Hill, and Robert Shiner (Laura) of Joliet; and a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Shiner of Baxter, TN. In addition to numerous nieces and nephews, she is also survived by 5 grandchildren, John (Clay) Shiner, Charles (Keegan) Shiner, Ryan Shiner, Katarina Shiner, and Hannah Shiner.

A Memorial Service will be held for Eileen at Woodlawn Funeral Home on Sunday, December 27, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. A Chapel Service will also be held on Sunday beginning at 3:30 PM. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Prosecutor says no indictment in Sandra Bland jail death

HEMPSTEAD, Texas – A grand jury decided that neither sheriff’s officials nor jailers committed a crime in the treatment of a black woman who died in a Texas county jail last summer, but it has not yet determined whether the state trooper who arrested her should face charges, a prosecutor said.

Prosecutor Darrell Jordan said Monday that the Waller County grand jury will return in January to consider “other issues” and warned there could be indictments. Unresolved issues include possible charges against the trooper who arrested 28-year-old Sandra Bland.

While Texas grand juries typically decide on felony charges, Jordan wouldn’t rule out misdemeanor charges related to the case.

The Chicago-area woman was pulled over July 10 for making an improper lane change. Dashcam video showed the traffic stop quickly became confrontational, with trooper Brian Encinia at one point holding a stun gun and yelling at Bland, “I will light you up!” after she refused to get out of her car.

Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw has said Encinia – who in June completed a yearlong probationary stint as a new trooper and has been on administrative duty since Bland’s death – violated internal policies of professionalism and courtesy.

Bland was taken in handcuffs to the county jail in nearby Hempstead, about 50 miles northwest of Houston, and remained there when she couldn’t raise about $500 for bail. She was discovered dead three days later, hanging from a cell partition with a plastic garbage bag used as a ligature around her neck.

Lawyers say mom threatened Chicago cop who shot her son

CHICAGO – Attorneys for a Chicago police officer who fatally shot a man are asking a judge to sanction his mother for making what they say are threats against the officer and his children.

Officer George Hernandez shot 25-year-old Ronald Johnson III in the back as he fled police in 2014.

Cook County’s top prosecutor said she won’t file charges against the officer.

In a Dec. 10 motion, Hernandez’s attorneys say Johnson’s mother, Dorothy Holmes, surreptitiously photographed Hernandez and posted the photo on social media with the word “murderer.”

She also made comments about Hernandez’s children during a protest, stating “What goes around comes around.”

Hernandez’s lawyers want

Judge Edmond Chang to order Holmes to stop and to warn her of sanctions – possibly including dismissal of her civil lawsuit – if she continues.

Chang ordered Holmes to appear in court on Jan. 6.

Judge: Law creating 6-person juries unconstitutional

CHICAGO – A Cook County judge says a new Illinois law that cut the size of civil-case juries from 12 to six people is unconstitutional.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin reported Judge William Gomolinski ruled Monday the Illinois constitution provides for 12-person juries. He says that “may not be altered by statute.”

The Legislature and then-Gov. Pat Quinn approved the law in 2014. It took effect June 1.

The measure also more than doubled jurors’ pay.

Supporters said higher pay would create more diverse juries, and reducing jury size would help alleviate the cost of paying more.

Body found in submerged vehicle in lake

HUDSON – Authorities say divers have found a body inside a submerged vehicle in a central Illinois lake.

Lt. Hadley Welsch of the McLean County Sheriff’s Department says divers found the vehicle about 20 feet from the shore on the north side of Evergreen Lake.

Tom Clem of Downs told The Bloomington Pantagraph that he and a friend were fishing Tuesday morning when they noticed muddy tire tracks going into the lake. They told a Bloomington city employee collecting trash who then reported the incident.

2 people charged after Illinois man’s body found in trunk

BROOKLYN – A man and a woman have been charged in the death of a southwestern Illinois man whose body was found in the trunk of a vehicle after a police chase.

Police discovered the body of Roderick Taylor of Collinsville on Thursday night after a vehicle driven by George Tillman of Belleville fled a traffic stop in Brooklyn and crashed in East St. Louis.

Authorities believe Tillman and Ashly Bonner lured Taylor earlier that evening to the woman’s Granite City home to rob him.

Investigators said Taylor was hit over the head and shot multiple times when a struggle ensued.

Tillman and Bonner are charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated battery.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS France says it foiled jihadi The bag contained his service weapon, a Sig Sauer handgun, attack near Orleans PARIS – French authorities said they thwarted a jihadi attack last week in an area near the central French city Orleans.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Tuesday on a visit near Toulouse the planned attack targeted “soldiers, police and representatives of the state,” and that two French citizens aged 20 and 24 were arrested Dec. 19.

Cazeneuve said the two were in contact with a French jihadi in Syria and an investigation is going to establish the exact links between the thwarted attack and the jihadi.

Cazeneuve said this brings the total number of foiled attacks in France to 10 since 2013. He also said that 3,414 people have been turned away from France’s borders since a state of emergency was declared after last month’s Paris attacks.

Secret Service agent’s gun stolen from car

WASHINGTON – A Secret Service agent had his gun, portable radio, badge and other items stolen from his personal vehicle in downtown Washington, police said.

According to a District of Columbia police report, the theft occurred shortly before 4 p.m.

Monday outside a downtown office building, less than a block from the agency’s headquarters. The agent parked his car and returned a few minutes later to find a window open and a bag missing, the report said.

According to the report, a witness saw someone reaching into the car but didn’t see the person removing anything. Police are investigating but have not identified any suspects.

Woman charged in Vegas Strip crash

LAS VEGAS – Prosecutors charged a homeless woman Tuesday with murder, child abuse and hit-and-run after police said she intentionally plowed a car carrying her young daughter through crowds of pedestrians on the Las Vegas Strip.

Additional charges were expected against Lakeisha Nicole Holloway, 24, as investigators interview witnesses and review video and physical evidence from the Sunday night crash.

Casino and street surveillance video cited by the prosecutor has not been made public, and Wolfson said prosecutors don’t plan to present it in court Wednesday, when Holloway is expected to make her first appearance before a judge.

Authorities say Holloway repeatedly swerved onto a sidewalk packed with tourists in front of the Paris Las Vegas and Planet Hollywood casino-hotels. A modest, makeshift memorial stood at the site on Tuesday.

By GENE JOHNSON The Associated Press SEATTLE – A weather pattern partly linked with El Niño has turned winter upside-down across the U.S. during a week of heavy holiday travel, bringing springlike warmth to the Northeast, a risk of tornadoes in the South, and so much snow across the West that even skiing slopes have been overwhelmed.

In a reversal of a typical Christmas, forecasters expect New York to be in the mid-60s on the holiday – several degrees higher than Los Angeles.

The mild conditions have helped golf courses in New England do brisk business, but the pattern comes at a steep cost for ski resorts that have closed and for backcountry skiers who confront avalanche risks. And many Americans complain it just doesn’t feel like the holidays without a chill in the air.

“It’s been a great snow sea-

son so far from the Rockies to the higher elevations in the Cascades and the northern Sierras, and it’s been the total opposite on the East Coast,” said Bob Oravec, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service.

Big parts of the county are basking in above-average temperatures, especially east of the Mississippi and across the Northern Plains. Record warmth was expected on Christmas Eve along the East Coast, Oravec said.

He laid the credit – or blame – with a strong El Niño pattern, the warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean near the equator. That’s helped drive warm air west to east across the Lower 48 and kept colder air from the Arctic at bay, he said.

In the Pacific Northwest and California, the effects of El Niño haven’t really hit yet.

They’re typically seen in January through March, and the heavy rains and snows in the

region are probably not linked to the phenomenon, Washington State Climatologist Nick Bond said.

The winter in the Pacific Northwest is still predicted to be drier than normal, so the series of storms that dumped feet of snow in the Cascades this month and piled the snowpack back above normal, were helpful, he said.

Come summer, farmers and salmon alike will rely on that melting snow.

In Washington, authorities have closed the state’s main east-west route, Interstate 90, over the Cascade Mountains repeatedly this week because of heavy snows and avalanche danger. Officials closed a sledding hill near Snoqualmie Pass on Tuesday because the storm kept the state Transportation Department from plowing the parking lot. On Sunday, a heavy storm closed Oregon’s Mount Ashland Ski Area when it knocked out power.

More young adults signing up for health law

By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Midway through sign-up season, more young adults are getting coverage through President Barack Obama’s health care law. The number of new customers is also trending higher, officials said Tuesday in an upbeat report.

Outside analysts who reviewed the administration’s update said it reflects encouraging progress, but that may not dispel questions about the long-term future of the health insurance markets created under Obama’s 2010 overhaul.

Premiums have been going up and getting new sign-ups remains a challenge.

Administration statistics also showed some continuing problems verifying the

citizenship and income of applicants for subsidized coverage. Consumer advocates say those issues generally stem from the complexity of the law, and that many people who run into verification problems simply drop out. Some become uninsured again.

Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell said more than 8.2 million people signed up or renewed coverage for 2016 from Nov. 1 through Dec. 19.

Open enrollment ends Jan. 31.

People who remain uninsured after that risk rising fines.

“We’re off to a strong start,” Burwell said Tuesday, noting that the numbers reflect only the 38 states using the HealthCare.gov website and call center. Major states running their own programs,

including California and New York, were not counted in Tuesday’s report, and their totals will be factored in later.

About 2.4 million people who’ve signed up are new to HealthCare.gov, said Burwell, ahead of last year’s levels.

And 2.1 million are under age 35, a coveted demographic because young adults tend to be healthy and their participation helps keep premiums in check.

The number of younger adults signed up is close to double what it was at this point last year.

Obama’s health care law offers subsidized private health insurance to people who don’t have access to job-based coverage. This year nearly 85 percent of customers nationwide are receiving assistance that averages $271 a month.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Wearing a dress blue uniform, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl faced a military judge Tuesday for the first time since the U.S. Army decided to proceed with a military trial that could result in a life sentence for his disappearance in Afghanistan in 2009.

Bergdahl, who was held by the Taliban for five years after he walked off a base, was arraigned during a short hearing on charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, a relatively rare charge that carries the severe punishment. If convicted of desertion, he could get up to five years in prison.

Bergdahl deferred entering a plea and did not decide whether he wants to face a court-martial with a jury or one with just a judge. He said little beyond answering “yes” and “no” to questions about whether he understood his rights and the court proceedings.

He appeared demure, sitting mostly still in his chair then walking deliberately with his head down as he left the courtroom. He talked quietly with his military attorney before

and after the hearing.

The next pretrial hearing was scheduled for Jan. 12 before Army Judge Col. Jeffery R. Nance, who will preside over future hearings.

Bergdahl, 29, of Hailey, Idaho, walked off his post in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktika province June 30, 2009. He was released in May 2014 as part of a prisoner swap, in exchange for five detainees Bowe Bergdahl in Guantanamo Bay. The move prompted harsh criticism, with some in Congress accusing President Barack Obama of jeopardizing the safety of the country with the exchange.

A preliminary hearing officer initially recommended a special court-martial, which is a misdemeanor-level forum.

But earlier this month, the Army announced Bergdahl would face the more serious general court-martial.

Drunken driving ruins the holidays

For many people, the Christmas and New Year’s holidays are times to have a cup of cheer – often one that includes alcohol.

It’s up to you whether a few glasses of spiked eggnog or celebratory champagne leads to unsolicited declarations of love and appreciation.

But if you’re planning to leave home to celebrate with a few holiday drinks, leave the driving to someone else.

Even sober drivers should be particularly careful to watch out for the other guy on the roads at this time of year – with so many people traveling to see family members, the number of alcohol-impaired drivers on the roads is likely to be higher than normal.

Some refer to the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s as “DUI season.”

As the Illinois Department of Transportation and state law enforcement will tell you, drunken driving ruins the holidays.

Last year, seven people were killed in six fatal crashes during the extended Christmas weekend, which began at 6 p.m. Dec. 24 and continued through midnight Dec. 28. Of those, two died in crashes involving a driver who had been drinking, according to an IDOT news release.

This year will feature a long holiday weekend, with Dec. 25 falling on a Friday. December has been declared Impaired Driving Prevention Month in Illinois, and police around the state have been looking for violators.

Police said they plan more enforcement activities around the state through the first weekend in January, with New Year’s Eve and its customary emphasis on imbibing looming large.

Don’t ruin the holiday cheer by being arrested for driving under the influence or worse, hurting or killing someone. Celebrate safely, by using a designated driver, a cab or ridesharing service, or other means of getting home after the party ends.

Desperate actions demanded by desperate taxpayers MACOMB – Look out, folks.

The state of Illinois is in crisis, the higher education budget is facing cuts and university administrators are talking about desperate action.

Yes, you read that right: desperate action.

They’re going to hold talks.

Who knows what comes next?

They might actually form a committee.

Western Illinois University President Jack Thomas asked the school’s board of trustees last week to hold off voting on a plan he’d earlier submitted that called for cuts of $7.5 million, including the elimination of 50 faculty positions by the summer.

Instead of asking the board to move forward with the cuts, Thomas proposes more talks: “We will meet with union leaders and other faculty, staff, and administrative leaders immediately to search for possible alternatives out of this difficult situation,” he wrote.

Western isn’t alone. The budget impasse in Springfield has administrators at all of Illinois’ state universities wondering what’s next.

Words are flowing out of Springfield, but money isn’t.

Universities have overextended themselves by offering scholarships to students in anticipation of the

But now, six months into the fiscal year without a budget, they are beginning to wonder if the money is ever coming.

With House Speaker Mike Madigan and Gov. Bruce Rauner staring eyeball to eyeball, don’t hold your breath.

In lean times, tough decisions have to be made. Thomas’ initial instinct to cut faculty positions was on target.

No one likes to see anyone lose his or her job.

But it is a preferable alternative to seeing tuition jacked up even higher.

Or, worse yet, seeing hard-working taxpayers bear an even greater burden.

Should folks living paycheck to paycheck sacrifice their own well-being – or their children’s – to ensure greater job security for professors making more than they will likely ever earn?

Not surprisingly, the union representing college professors at Western

doesn’t like that question.

University spokeswoman Darcie Shinberger said part of the issue is that the university’s labor contracts call for faculty members to be given six to nine months’ notice before they are let go.

Raise your hand if your boss has to give you nine months’ notice before showing you the door.

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

This privileged group wants to shift the burden of balancing the university budget elsewhere, namely to taxpayers and students.

Our universities exist to educate our young people, yet there are some in academia who don’t see it that way.

They view their tenured positions as cozy cocoons protecting them from harsh economic reality.

But one reality no one can escape is that our state is spending too much.

When your spending exceeds your revenues, something has to be cut.

And it doesn’t take a committee to figure that out.

Area college teams off to strong start

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com There’s plenty of exciting things to talk about thus far as the 2015 portion of the schedules for the area’s quartet of four-year college basketball teams winds down.

Three squads are ranked among the top-10 teams in their respective divisions and all four own winning percentages of .800 or better while having played at least 10 games.

The combined record of the two University of St. Francis and two Lewis University teams is 39-5 (.886). The group is off to a 13-2 record in conference play (.867) and have won all but one of their 19 home games so far (.947).

Flyers squads are off to a combined 18-3 start while the Fighting Saints have compiled

a 21-2 mark as the teams head into a brief break over the Christmas holiday weekend.

Coach Ryan Marks’ Saints men’s team was ranked second in the NAIA Division II before suffering its first defeat Saturday at Cardinal Stritch. They bounced back with a 99-91 win Monday against Mount Mercy at the Sullivan Center to improve to 11-1 on the season.

Ilya Ilyayev leads he way for St. Francis with 23.5 points and 8.3 rebounds a contest.

Jens Kennedy is averaging 17.9 points and 7 rebounds while Edvinas Presniakovas is scoring 10.7 points a game.

USF is 6-0 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Saints have another big test coming up to close out the year when they host No. 5 Cornerstone, the defending

NAIA Division II national champs, at 6 p.m. Dec. 30.

Kristen Gillespie has had a successful debut as Lewis women’s coach after her squad won 10 of its first 11, despite losing returning All-American Jamie Johnson to a season-ending knee injury early in the year. She averaged 22.2 points in her six games.

The Flyers, who are ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, have won five straight since suffering their lone loss Nov. 25 at Grand Valley State. They close out 2015 with a home game against Cumberland on at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 30.

Returning All-American Mariyah Brawner-Henley leads the way for the Flyers with 17.6 points and 10.7 rebounds and freshman Jessica Kelliher has been a welcome addition with an average of

17.2 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Alyssa Siwek is scoring 9.6 points a game.

Samantha Quigley’s Fighting Saints women’s team is ranked 10th after getting off to a 10-1 start. After taking 16 days off, USF returns to action on the last three days of 2015 when it takes a Florida road trip. This is USF’s first appearance in the NAIA DII rankings.

USF suffered its only defeat Dec. 9 when it faced the Flyers.

Lewis won that contest 73-61 on its own court because of a 23-8 advantage in the second period.

Charnelle Reed leads the Saints with 17.9 points and 9.6 rebounds a game while Kamari Jordan is collecting 15.4 points a contest. Jordan Giddings averages 9.2 points and 5.2 rebounds a game. USF

has won all five of its games in CCAC play.

The Flyers’ men’s team has won its past two as it heads into its final game of 2015 on Dec. 30 when it hosts Roosevelt at Neil Carey Arena.

Coach Scott Trost’s squad lost to Ferris State in overtime and also fell at Indianapolis.

Max Strus has been red hot so far for Lewis, averaging 25.7 points and 9.8 rebounds a game. Kyle Nelson is collecting 12.1 points and 7.3 rebounds on average while Miles Simelton scores 10.9 a game.

The 2016 segment of the local college schedule kicks Jan. 2 when the USF men host Lewis in a 3 p.m. contest.

NEW LENOX – Brian Glynn knows his Lincoln-Way West wrestling program is one of the best in Class 2A in Illinois, even if it doesn’t have any state trophies to prove it.

For the past few seasons, the Warriors have been among the top teams in the state’s middle class qualified for the dual team finals once. In each year, West’s hopes were dashed by a squad that ultimately advanced to the championship meet, with perennial power Montini stopping it on four occasions.

While bad draws have haunted the Warriors in the past, Glynn prefers to look at the things he and his squad can control as they prepare for the 2016 part of their schedule ranked behind only Washington and Mount Carmel in Class 2A. West improved to 13-3 on the season after it defeated Oak Forest, 69-4, and Bradley-Bourbonnais, 74-3, in a triangular meet on Tuesday.

The Warriors hope the IHSA pairings will spare them from meeting Washington in the LaSalle-Peru Sectional and then from seeing it or Mount Carmel in the quarterfinals. If that happens, West could be in line to finally collect a trophy for a top-four state finish.

“We’ve been through it before so we don’t really let the pairings affect us since you can’t control it,” Glynn said.

“In the first couple of years, I was pretty upset and disappointed knowing that we were probably the second-best team in the state but never got that trophy. But I think that we get the recognition from the people that know and from other coaches and colleagues, which is all that you’re looking for any way.

“The good thing is that we’ve never been senior-heavy, we’ve always had a real good mix of kids. It seems like we lose a couple of top guys but have a fresh cycle that’s coming in. It’s tough to sustain that, but with our school being so new and nice, and this being such a good area with great feeder programs, it makes it a

Kids want to come here and be successful, and we have a great staff that can take them to the next level.”

The Warriors had a slow start since many of their athletes were members of the football team that lost in the Class 5A championship. Glynn saw how well football success led to more of the same in wrestling while competing at Providence Catholic, and hopes for similar good times at West.

“Coach (Dave) Ernst knows what wrestlers are all about and he’s our biggest supporter,” Glynn said. “He wishes that everyone would wrestle and tries to get little kids into

wrestling, since he knows how much it will help him in the future. We have nine starters who were football players.

This was the first year that we went so deep in the playoffs, but I can already tell that that’s a great thing for our program.”

Everyone who competed Tuesday owns a winning record. Chris Kennedy (13-1 at 106), Tom Buell (12-2 at 120), Trevor Schmidt (12-1 at 182), Gehrig Simon (11-2 at 126),

Josh Bohne (11-2 at 160), Gabe Montalvo (11-2 at 170), Jake Pakula (10-4 at 113), Amier Khamis (10-4 at 138), Kyle Ruettiger (10-3 at 145), Justin Bills (10-3 at 285), Grahm McClure (7-3 at 152) and Joey Schloegel (3-0 at 132) have winning percentages of .700 or better.

“We just have a lot of really good guys who work hard,” McClure said. “We all wrestle one another in the practice room so by going harder, it only makes

everyone else better. We’ve run into a lot of tough teams at team state or sectionals, so we only made it to state once and ran into Montini. This year, we have a really good group of guys and everyone’s working hard, not just themselves, but for each other. So to make it back to state would be great.”

Although he’s one of the newest members of the program, Kennedy knows the Warriors’ history well, since his brother Joe also wrestled at West. The freshman is excited about what the squad might be able to accomplish this season.

“This school is special since it’s able to make people good,” Kennedy said. “So I think that it’s going to remain good and continue to produce good wrestlers. It’s just the mentality that we have. We put a lot of work into practice and do our best to be the best that we can be. So we just have to keep doing what we’re doing so far and things will just go from there.”

Hilbert receives conference honor SUBMITTED REPORTS JOLIET – The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference has announced University of St. Francis sports information director Dave Hilbert has been named the league’s Sports Information Director of the Year for 2014-15.

Hilbert, in his third season as the Saints’ SID, earned the College Sports Information Directors of America 25Year Award in the summer of 2014. Before his time at St. Francis, he served as assistant director of athletics for sports information and promotions at The University of Chicago for 19 years. He also had identical two-year stints at Florida Atlantic University – where he became the school’s first-ever sports information director in 1989 – and Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW) from 1991 through ’93.

“Since hiring Dave in July of 2012, he has not disappointed. In fact, he has been way better than expected,” USF director of athletics Dave Laketa said. “Having served as a sports information director myself for 10 years and having worked with some of the best in the industry during my 29-year association in college athletics, I would put Dave Hilbert up with the best in the field.”

A member of the CCAC Sports Information Directors Executive Committee, Hilbert helped oversee a major redesign of the conference website in 2013-14 before redesigning the USF athletics website (www.gofightingsaints.com) before the start of the 2014-15 season.

He also helped to plan and

organize St. Francis’ new athletics awards banquet, the Bernie Awards, this May. In the past year alone, Hilbert nearly tripled the athletic department’s following on Instagram and increased its following on Facebook and Twitter by about 50 percent.

During his long career, Hilbert has earned top ratings for his football and men’s and women’s basketball programs as well as his multi-sport brochures no less than a dozen times.

Hilbert has not only served St. Francis, but the conference as a whole, providing photography help at the CCAC cross country, outdoor track and field and women’s golf championships.

He has also assisted on ingame volleyball statistics at CCAC crossover volleyball tournaments and provided guidance to two member schools pursuing new video streaming and web hosting opportunities.

“Dave’s passion for his position is incredible,” Laketa said. “A lot of people get burnt out in this profession after so many years, but not Dave.

He gets more and more excited with each passing day and with each social media trend that he discovers.

“It is always great to walk in our community and hear so many people talk about how good our teams are doing.

This has a lot to do with the work that Dave has done with our media outlets.”

Hilbert has been involved in his community, as well, having served as an animal shelter volunteer with the Naperville Area Humane Society and in Joliet serving breakfast at the Daybreak Shelter.

Six from area reach Dvorak semifinals SUBMITTED REPORTS MACHESNEY PARK – Six area wrestlers earned spots in Wednesday’s semifinals during opening day action at the Al Dvorak Memorial Tournament at Harlem.

Plainfield East and Plainfield South each had two quarterfinal winners while Bolingbrook had another.

A competitor who lives in Lockport also advanced to the semifinals but Providence Catholic dropped all three of its quarterfinal matches.

Moving on to the semifinals for the Bengals were Michael McGee (120) and Zach Krause (138), while Danny Saracco (195) and Eric Johnson (220) both picked up quarterfinal victories for the Cougars.

Bolingbrook’s Clarence Golden (152) also advanced to the semifinals while teammate Dylan Burnoski (106) lost in the quarterfinals. St. Rita’s Austin O’Connor (145), who lives in Lockport and won last year’s outstanding wrestler award, also moved on to the semifinals.

Suffering quarterfinal losses for Providence were Josh Ramos (120), Cole Smith (152) and Dominic Ferraro (220).

The Celtics were 13th with 65 points to lead the four area squads.

The tournament concludes Wednesday.

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois men’s basketball team defeated Roosevelt, 85-52, to remain unbeaten at home this season.

The Lakers were shooting well, hitting their first three 3-pointers, and were able to hang with the Huskies for a good part of the first half. But 12 first-half points by Marin Maric and some late help off the bench by Andrew Zelis padded the Huskie lead to 4729 at the half. Maric scored nine of the Huskies’ first 12 points, and even hit his first 3-pointer of the year en route to a season high 22 point performance.

“I thought our first five minutes we came out with great mindset,” Huskies coach Mark Montgomery said. “Our second wave just didn’t kick in, but when we put another rotation in, that’s when we really got going.”

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey is The Associated Press college football player of the year, becoming the first non-Heisman Trophy winner to earn the honor in six years.

McCaffrey was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy to Derrick Henry, but received 29 of 60 votes from the AP Top 25 media panel to edge the Alabama running back.

Henry received 16 votes and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson was third with 11. Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield each received two votes.

Ex-Hawks’ Sharp, Niemi lead Stars past old team

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com DALLAS – Patrick Sharp’s shot from the right circle soared over the goalie’s right shoulder, banking in off the crossbar just 11 seconds into the third period. Sharp pumped his fist in celebration, and skated into the arms of Johnny Oduya to celebrate.

It’s something the Blackhawks have seen time and time again over the years. Only Sharp was wearing green. And it was Corey Crawford whom he beat.

And just to rub it in, it was old pal Antti Niemi pitching a 20-save shutout in the Stars’ 4-0 victory over the Hawks on Tuesday night, sending the Hawks into their four-day Christmas break on a sour

note. Sharp had a goal and an assist for the first-place Stars, who are now 10 points clear of the third-place Hawks, with a game in hand.

“It’s been a little bit of an adjustment coming from Chicago after such a long period of time, but my family and I like this city, the organization has been great and we’re winning games,” Sharp said before the game. “So, not a lot to complain about.”

Joel Quenneville was wary about this one, calling the last game before the break “dangerous.” But given the familiar faces on the other side and the Stars’ first-place standing, there was little risk of the Hawks looking past this one.

And the first meeting of arguably the Western Conference’s two best teams didn’t disap-

point.

It was a spirited, back-andforth affair before the Stars broke it open early in the third with an utterly dominant period.

Neither team could break through in an uptempo first period, with the Hawks getting outshot 7-3, as Dallas blocked 10 attempts and killed two power plays. The Hawks then had the first seven shots on goal of the second period, only to see the Stars get the next seven, including Jason Spezza’s power play goal. Spezza took a touch pass from Sharp and somehow squeezed the puck between Corey Crawford’s left leg and the post.

A stunned Crawford faceplanted into the ice in disbelief when he realized the puck got past him.

The Bears promoted defensive tackle D’Anthony Smith from their practice squad Tuesday and waived running back Antone Smith.

D’Anthony Smith was a third-round pick of the Jaguars in 2010. He played in 10 games for Jacksonville in 2012 and last appeared in a game in 2013 with the Seahawks.

He has been on the practice squad since Oct. 13.

Antone Smith, who signed with the team Oct. 12, had one carry for 11 yards and spent some time on special teams, but had been inactive since both Matt Forte and Ka’Deem Carey got healthy.

The Bears also tinkered with their practice squad, signing cornerback De’Vante Bausby and defensive lineman Davon Coleman while cutting defensive lineman Toby Johnson.

Bulls’ Noah to miss at least 2 weeks

CHICAGO – Bulls center Joakim Noah will miss at least two weeks because of a sprained left shoulder. Noah exited Monday’s loss to the Brooklyn Nets in the third quarter.

He was on defense when Brooklyn’s Andrea Bargnani, after jumping, came down hard on Noah’s left arm, bending it back awkwardly. Noah, who was called for a foul on the play, ran around the court in obvious pain with his left shoulder slumped over for a moment before heading off the court and into the tunnel leading to the locker room.

He had an MRI on Tuesday and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Noah is averaging 4.5 points and 8.8 rebounds.

t’s the malleability of Christmas dinner that can make it so challenging to plan. Which is to say, choice can be intimidating.

At Thanksgiving, it’s about the turkey. Valentine’s Day demands chocolate. Easter? Ham or lamb. And Fourth of July is all burgers and dogs all the time. But Christmas doesn’t enjoy a similar food association that presets the menu as happens with so many other holidays. All of which tends to leave us scrambling.

When I was a kid, my mother often did ham. Not because we loved it or it felt special, but because my mother is vegan and it was easy for her to cook. When I was a teenager, we switched to mountains of shrimp with butter. Also easy. After I got married, we started eating Italian because pasta and meatballs is a quick and easy meal to assemble in the midst of the gifting and visiting chaos.

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago I finally settled on something that not only was easy, but also felt celebratory. A massive beef roast.

Not earth shattering, of course. But for some reason it took nearly 40 years for me to reach this point. Tender and juicy, a roast feels indulgent. And when treated right, it can pack tons of flavor. But it also is utterly simple to prepare.

So I’m sharing my Christmas beef roast recipe, which gets intense savory flavors from a rub of fresh rosemary and cracked peppercorns.

All you need to do is rub it on the meat, pop it in the oven, then head back to the festivities. This recipe even makes its own side dish – butter-roasted potatoes that bathe in the juices of the meat.

Rosemary-Pepper Roast Beef With Butter Potatoes Start to finish: 2 hours 15 minutes (15 minutes active) Servings: 10

2 pounds new or other small potatoes ¼ cup (½ stick) butter, melted 2 tablespoons black or mixed peppercorns 1 tablespoon kosher salt ¼ cup fresh rosemary leaves ¼ cup olive oil 4- to 5-pound top sirloin roast (also called top butt or spoon roast), trimmed and tied 1/2 cup white wine 1 tablespoon lemon juice Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. In a 9-by-14-inch metal (stovetop-safe) roasting pan, combine the potatoes and melted butter. Toss to coat, then arrange in a single layer. Set aside.

In a mini food processor or blender, combine the peppercorns, salt and rosemary. Process until well chopped, but not puréed. Transfer to a small bowl and

stir in the olive oil. Slather the mixture thickly over the entire roast. Set the roast over the potatoes, then cover with foil and roast for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and continue roasting for another 45 minutes. Reduce the oven to 350 degrees F. and roast for another 45 minutes, or until the meat reaches 120 degrees F. at the center.

Use tongs to transfer the roast to a serving platter. Cover with foil, then with several kitchen towels to stay warm.

Set the roasting pan with the potatoes over 1 or 2 burners on medium heat on the stovetop. Add the wine and cook, stirring gently, until any browned bits from the bottom of the pan are released and the sauce thickens, about 3 minutes. Stir in the lemon juice. Slice the roast thinly, then serve with the potatoes. Spoon the pan sauce over the potatoes.

In a contract of four of a major, having only three tricks to lose is fine; if you are faced with four, you must work out how to shake that extra loser.

In today’s deal, South is in four hearts. He wins the first trick with his club ace and cashes the heart ace, being shocked to see West discard a diamond. How should declarer continue?

That South hand was a tad strong to open two no-trump with its eight probable winners.

So South opened two clubs and rebid two no-trump.

With the bad trump break, South has five losers in his hand: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and one club.

But that will not be a problem if he can take 10 tricks.

How is that possible?

Declarer has four side-suit winners, so he needs six trump tricks, three tops and three ruffs.

He can get those if he is careful. At trick three, he should duck a spade, the key play.

Suppose the defenders shift to diamonds. South wins, plays a spade to dummy’s ace, ruffs a spade, cashes the club king, and ruffs his last club on the board. Then he leads another spade.

What does East do?

If he discards, South gets his third low ruff. If East ruffs in, South discards one of his diamond losers, effectively making the defense take two of its winners in one trick.

An annual flu shot can help older adults avoid flu complications such as pneumonia. The flu shot is even more crucial for older adults who are at higher risk for serious complications because of existing health conditions.

Getting the shot each year can help prevent hospitalization or death from flu complications.

The study I discussed earlier does not tell us whether Fluzone reduces serious complications of flu. But it does suggest the higher dose helps the body mount a stronger defense.

One of the problems with any of the types of flu vaccine currently available is that different flu viruses circulate each year. Thus, the vaccine is a little different each year.

It takes months to make enough vaccine to be ready for flu season, and that means the vaccine makers need to guess correctly which flu strains will be circulating months in the future. Those guesses are not always perfect.

In recent years, medical research has identified what are called broadly neutralizing antibodies that attack most strains of the flu virus. Many research teams are pursuing ways that these antibodies might be exploited to give better protection against the flu than current, imperfect vaccines.

Though the high-dose flu shot may provide better protection, any flu shot is better than none. For best results, get the shot early in the flu season, which runs from October to May.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard that there is a high-dose flu shot. Does it protect better than a regular flu shot? Should I ask my doctor about it?

Dear Reader: The highdose flu vaccine, known as Fluzone, is approved for adults ages 65 and older.

It may provide better flu protection for older adults than the standard flu vaccine, which is less effective in older adults than in younger adults.

Both the high-dose and standard flu vaccines target three different strains of the flu virus, selected from the most common strains predicted to be circulating that year. In both vaccines, the viruses are inactivated, or killed, so they cannot cause the flu, even in people with weakened immune systems.

Both vaccines can cause mild symptoms of arm pain, redness, muscle aches or low-grade fever.

Most people have minimal to no symptoms. But the high-dose vaccine may slightly increase side effects.

The big difference is that the high-dose vaccine contains four times the dose of immune-stimulating antigens as the regular flu shot. This provokes the body to mount a greater immune (antibody) response.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at the effectiveness of the highdose vaccine, compared to the regular flu vaccine, in older adults. Researchers randomly divided nearly 32,000 adults, ages 65 or older, into two groups.

One group received standard flu shots. The other group got high-dose flu shots.

Those who got the high-dose shots were 24 percent less likely to develop flu than those who got the standard shots.

The researchers estimate that the high-dose flu shot provides seniors with the same level of protection that younger adults

For the first five years after our children were born we didn’t get out much. My wife is now starting to go out with friends from work – a mixed group of single and married guys and gals.

She has invited me to come along, but sitters are expensive and I’m not friendly with her co-workers. She stays out with them until 3 to 4 a.m. once a month. I think that’s ridiculously late when you have a husband and children at home.

When she’s not here, I can’t sleep and I worry that something is wrong.

She rarely calls to check in unless I ask her to. Overall I trust her, but with her drinking heavily and many single guys around, I don’t feel comfortable with the situation. The implications of your letter are serious, so you should sit down with her and have a discussion about the amount she imbibes on her nights out. You shouldn’t have to worry about her, so out of respect for your feelings, she should routinely let you know how long she’ll be after the bars/ clubs close.

Dear Abby: I found out a few months ago that my husband, “Hal,” the father of my children, has had affairs with five different women.

I left, and we are now being divorced.

I desperately wanted revenge, so I have been secretly seeing Hal’s good friend “Ron,” whom he “forbade” me from contacting after I told him his infidelity and disrespect gave me permission to act on the attraction I had for Ron. It’s just a friends-with-benefits situation and I am having fun, so I don’t really consider it to be revenge.

Hal has spent the last five months begging me to forgive him and work on our marriage, but I no longer love him and I certainly don’t trust him. I told him I would “work on” forgiving him, so now he calls, says he still loves me and flirts.

The last woman Hal cheated on me with is his current girlfriend. He told me that if I ever want to hook up, I should make sure to use code words when leaving messages because she might see my calls and text messages. He also told me that he is not interested in a longterm relationship with her.

I slept with Hal recently to have leverage. I was contemplating sending her the proof as payback for how she treated me some months back, although I don’t want her boyfriend back. I am now questioning if this is the right thing to do. Should I just leave it alone? – Pay-
