Procrastinators will find their business is wanted

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Procrastinating shoppers still have time before Christmas.

Several local retailers plan to extend their holiday shopping hours along with offering discounts on items in the two days before Christmas.

Store owners are accustomed to shoppers looking for gifts as late as the last minutes before stores close on Christmas Eve. Or, even a few minutes after.

“It is inevitable someone knocks on the door five after [4 p.m.]. They’re always grateful and they always buy something,” said Ellen Haake, owner of Newstar Jewelers, 2417 Jefferson St., Joliet.

The store plans to stay

open until 8 p.m. Tuesday and will close 4 p.m. Christmas Eve. Once the store closes on Christmas Eve, Haake will treat employees with some wine before they go home to their families.

Because Newstar Jewelers is a family store, Haake said the business tries to keep “sanity in our hours,” but have extended hours because there always are last-minute shoppers, especially men, she said. But those late shoppers are always nice and patient, she said.

“It makes the season all happy. They just want to be happy,” Haake said.

The Louis Joliet Mall will keep even later hours – until 11 p.m. Tuesday and 6 p.m.

Christmas Eve. But almost every store, in-

cluding Wal-Mart, closes for Christmas.

Not everyone, however.

Walgreens is open on Christmas. And one gas station chain has been advertising to potential customers they can pick up gift cards while filling gas tanks on Christmas Day. At Gourmet Junction, 24030 W. Lockport St. in Plainfield, owner Mary Ann Waldorf plans to be open until at least 8 p.m. Tuesday and maybe as late as 8:30 p.m. The store closes at 3 p.m. Christmas Eve. Waldorf said the store can accommodate late shoppers by customizing gifts and wrapping them. The store also sells food.

A lot of customers are like family and always come back, Waldorf said. She said she doesn’t mind the late shoppers.

“We never turn anybody down. We don’t like to do that.

We like everybody to be happy,” she said.

Three candidates in mayoral race

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The expected three candidates are in the Joliet mayoral race.

Councilman Bob O’Dekirk filed his petitions Monday, the final day for filing, making him the third candidate in the April 7 election.

Incumbent Mayor Tom Giarrante and Andrew Mihelich, the Joliet Junior College board president who also ran in 2011, filed Dec. 15.

O’Dekirk’s filing was expected. He had announced in January that he would run for mayor. Likewise, Giarrante made it clear at the start of the year that he would run for re-election. He and O’Dekirk have clashed at times on city issues over the past year.

Mihelich confirmed in May that he planned to make another run for mayor.

Hansen’s Villa, 395 South State St., Manhattan, which sells sportswear and formal wear, will be open until 6 p.m. Tuesday and will close at noon Christmas Eve. Cindy Hansen, store manager, said this week the store will run a last-minute Christmas gift sale with 50 percent off on all items.

“We usually get a few straggling [customers] in the last few days – husbands coming to get things for their wives,” Hansen said.

Last-minute Christmas sales also are being offered at Toton’s TV, 2001 Leness Lane, Crest Hill. Vikki Toton, the store’s office manager, said the store will give discounts on extended warranties.

“We still have openings for deliveries for [Tuesday] … sometimes we do get late shoppers. It could be busier, obviously,” she said.

Toton’s TV will be open until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday but closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

O’Dekirk is giving up his District 2 seat to run for mayor.

Filling the void are three well-known candidates vying for the District 2 seat.

They are: Brett Gould, a member of the Joliet Park District board and an administrator at Lockport Township High School; Patrick Mudron, a Joliet insurance businessman who was a standout football player and wrestler at Joliet Catholic High School in the 1960s; and Roger Powell, chairman of the Housing Authority of Joliet and a top scorer on the Joliet Central High School basketball team that finished third in the state tournament in the 1969-70 season.

District 4 also will be hotly contested.

Incumbent Bettye Gavin, who became a council member when she was appointed to fill

the spot vacated by Susie Barber, is running for election.

Also on the ballot will be: Phillip A. Petrakos, 1313 Demmond Court; Angel Guzman, 424 Garnsey Ave.; and James Foster, 1107 Garvin St. In District 1, Councilman Larry Hug will be challenged

by Terry Cottrell of 3411 Timberfield Way. Councilman John Gerl will be challenged in District 3 by Ray Polikaitis, 7202 Faxton Lane.

And District 5 Councilman Terry Morris will be challenged by Leonard Thompson Jr., 224 Rowell Ave.

Council make-up

The nine-member City Council is made up of the mayor and eight council members.

Three council members are elected at-large by the entire city. None of those spots will be on the ballot in April.

The district council members represents specific geographic sections of the city.

Joliet’s Boys and Girls Club keeps doors open for winter break Winter Break events in Joliet

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Alvin Loggins can’t imagine spending his winter break anywhere other than the George Werden Buck Boys and Girls Club in Joliet.

After all, the 16-year-old has been a member of the downtown Joliet youth club since he was 6 – the youngest someone can be to join. It’s become a home away from home for him.

“I love this place,” said Loggins, who kicked off his winter break Monday with a game of basketball alongside friends at the club at 226 E. Collins St. On Monday, about 60 children ages 6 to 18 took advantage of the Boys and Girls Club of Joliet’s longstanding tradition of keeping its doors open over winter break. Some club members could be found downstairs playing Monopoly, while others created arts and crafts and played video games or billiards.

The Boys and Girls Club is one local agency offering activities during winter break.

Just southeast of the center is the Smith Family YMCA on Briggs Street, which also is offering activities for members.

The YMCA center is hosting its youth Holiday Camp this winter break. It runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 23, 26, 29, 30 and Jan. 2. The camp includes swimming, physical activities, arts and crafts and snacks.

“It’s a fun time for kids,” Brooke Hall, youth and family director for Smith Family YMCA said.

The Boys and Girls Club of Joliet has served as a safe haven for the community since 1951. In the summer months, attendance averages close to 400 children. Children unable to afford the dues can earn a membership by assisting staff, said Frank Bati, 74, who’s worked with the nonprofit for almost 48 years.

Bati said the club is a place where children can go to find positive adult role models, a free meal, and a fun environment. He joined the club at the age of 16 as a member and was eventually hired on.

“For these kids, this is probably the only place they come and feel safe and have a good time,” Bati said. “Otherwise, they’d be getting in trouble.”

Many of the children who

go to the Boys and Girls Club come from low-income and single-parent families, Diab said.

On most days, food is provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank. But club members were surprised Monday with Little Caesars Pizza for lunch,

thanks to a donation by RE/ MAX Realty of Joliet.

For Chris Farrier, 10, of Joliet, who is an only child, the club is a highlight of his day, where he’s made “so many friends” over the years.

Not every youth services agency will have activities during the winter break – a time when parents may be working and kids may be looking for something to do. But the George Werden Buck Boys and Girls Club in a news release about its holiday hours described it as “a time honored tradition of remaining open during winter break when kids are out of school and require a safe place to go.”

The club will be closed on Christmas Day, Friday and for New Year’s Day and Jan. 2.

But it will be open until 2 p.m. on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Czerkies responds to marquee criticism Donor said he’d be ‘happy’ to get donation back from Rialto

JOLIET – Ed Czerkies, the donor at the center of the recent Rialto Square Theatre marquee controversy, issued a letter Monday saying he would be happy to take his $350,000 donation back – but a Rialto official said he has not closed the door on the deal.

In the letter to The Herald-News, Czerkies noted he had no control over the appearance of the marquee and his only stipulation was his parents’ names be on it. The renderings for the marquee include a space on all three sides to honor his parents.

He wrote later in the letter that many people donate to organizations they “hold dear to their hearts. Like myself, they simply want to know that their contribution is appreciated.” But Czerkies wrote he has come to the conclusion that the donation to the Rialto will not be viewed in a positive way.

“At this time I would be very happy to receive my donation returned to me, so I can seek out other charitable ways to honor my parents,” Czerkies wrote in a letter to The Herald-News.

The letter was sent Monday via email from his oldest son, Craig Czerkies, who later confirmed his father sent the letter. Efforts on Monday

to reach Ed Czerkies were not immediately successful.

Jim Smith, president of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, which governs the Rialto, said he talked Monday afternoon with Czerkies.

Czerkies confirmed to Smith that he sent the letter.

While Czerkies is not happy with the situation, Smith said the deal to donate the money for the marquee is not dead.

“I asked him the question, ‘Is this a dead deal?’ He said no,” Smith said.

It was announced last month that Czerkies, retired from his construction business, would donate $350,000 to the Rialto to replace the historic building’s aging marquee.

But that announcement met with an online firestorm of criticism.

Much of the criticism was targeted at the new marquee design – which includes a digital display to showcase upcoming acts. Critics said it doesn’t fit with the 88-year-old building’s character. Others have concerns about the space devoted to honor the parents of the donor.

Smith said a slight redesign and modification has been done, and that Rialto General Manager Randy Green dropped off that design to Czerkies on Friday. Czerkies had not yet had a chance to look at it as of Monday, Smith said.

“It is very palatable, very respectful of his family,” Smith said. “It is more in terms of the font and script. It’s not as pronounced. It’s aesthetically pleasing.”

Czerkies wanted some assurances about the longevity of the sign, Smith said, and that his parents’ names would be on the marquee.

“I personally just told Ed that the life of the sign should

be no problem, with the memorialization,” Smith said. “[I asked] if we can get you that in black and white, can we still keep this deal alive? He said yes.”

When asked whether his father was withdrawing the funding, Craig Czerkies said “the letter is self explanatory,” and declined to comment further.

Last month’s marquee

announcement led to online criticism from many area residents on Facebook, a request for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office to determine whether the Historic Preservation Commission violated the Illinois Open Meetings Act, a call to city officials to withhold funding from the historic theater, and a protest outside the theater before a Dec. 14 show.

The public reaction “was completely unexpected,” Ed Czerkies wrote, noting that he’s donated to several charitable organizations over the years and that “each of these investments have proven to be worthwhile and appreciated by those who received them.”

Smith said he believes the Rialto and the Czerkies family “can come to a mutually agreeable solution on the aesthetics, design and the longevity to the sign.”

Smith added: “In my mind, he continues to be an open-minded, generous person who doesn’t deserve this level of acrimony.”

Five go to hospital after I-80 accident on Sunday

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Five people were taken to area hospitals, one by helicopter, after a two-vehicle accident Sunday on Interstate 80 near Morris.

The accident happened about 1:30 p.m. Sunday a halfmile west of Route 47.

A vehicle slowed down to use the turn-around in the median between the I-80 westbound and eastbound lanes,

state police Master Sgt. R.A. Caves said Monday. The vehicle that slowed down was then rear-ended by a vehicle behind it. The first vehicle rolled and landed in the median.

The second vehicle ran off the road but stayed upright, he said.

There were six people involved in the accident, and one refused treatment, said Bob Wills, deputy chief of the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District.

One was taken by helicopter, but no injuries were life-threatening, Caves said.

Traffic was shut down headed west for more than three hours. Eastbound lanes were closed, as well, but not as long.

Morris was assisted by Minooka and Coal City fire districts, as well as Channahon, which covered a Morris call while they were on scene, Wills said.

State police still are investigating the incident.

• Kevin A. Ruff, 52, of the 25800 block of Black Road in Shorewood, was arrested by sheriff’s police Wednesday on a charge of aggravated battery.

Local chiefs discuss NYPD shootings

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Local police chiefs said it’s business as usual – with some extra emphasis on being careful out there – in light of the weekend’s execution-style shootings of two police officers in New York.

Police chiefs noted that officers typically have to be wary of danger. But they did say the anti-police feelings mounting in some parts of the country create new concern.

“We’re just asking our officers to remain extra vigilant, understanding that there are some anti-police emotions that are resonating throughout the country,” Joliet Chief Brian Benton said, adding “we have not noticed any issues in particular in Joliet that have caused us to overreact.”

“I think in Lockport we have a good relationship with the community,” Chief Terry Lemming said. “I believe we treat everybody fairly. I don’t think we’re going to have a problem.”

However, Lemming acknowledged a police officer never knows for sure who he is going to encounter on a given day.

Ismaaiyl Brinsley, the gunman police say ambushed the two officers in New York on Saturday, had traveled that day from the Baltimore area, where he shot and wounded an ex-girlfriend. Brinsley, 28, who killed himself after shooting the police officers, also had a history of arrests in Georgia and Ohio.

Before Brinsley shot the two officers in New York, he had engaged in an online rant, making references to

Plainfield Chief John Konopek said. “The big difference here is that in Plainfield we don’t have a lot of foot traffic. You don’t have people walking up to you as you’re in your car.”

In New York, the assailant walked up to the officers as they were sitting in their marked car and opened fire.

MORRIS – The Morris Community YMCA is close to opening in January, putting finishing touches on its first building and forming partnerships for the health and wellness of its members.

“The YMCA does so much and we want to reach all audiences,” Executive Director Missy Durkin said. “We are not a cookie cutter franchise.

We want to be responsive to the community needs.”

The local facility is part of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA, which also has two locations in Joliet and another in Plainfield.

The Morris YMCA will be housed in the former Morris City Hall building at 320 Wauponsee St. The 7,500 square feet of space is divided into different workout spaces, classrooms and meeting space. There also is a day care available for members when they are working out.

The organization will lease the building from the city for the next three to five years until it can build a new facility.

Along with the new location, the YMCA and Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers have formed a partnership. Under the multi-year plan, they will work together to develop programs and services at the temporary YMCA location in downtown Morris.

The hospital will move its senior fitness classes to the YMCA and provide other services, Durkin said.

“We can take care of the body and they can hold classes like nutrition,” Durkin said. “The hospital can have a presence on site.”

Cocker moved to Crawford, Colorado, a town of fewer than 500 people, in the early 1990s. He and his wife, Pam, ran a children’s educational foundation – the Cocker Kids Foundation – that raised funds for the town and schools, and ran the Mad Dog Cafe for several years in town, said Tom Wills, publisher of The North Fork Merchant Herald, a local community newspaper.

Wills said Cocker bought about 40 acres of property and built a hillside mansion – which he called Mad Dog Ranch – when he moved to Colorado.

A group of Cocker’s friends gathered Monday at community radio station KVNF to play Cocker’s songs.

“He had a long battle with cancer. We’re trying to do a little tribute for him,” said Bob Pennetta, a real estate agent and board member of the Cocker Kids Foundation.

Cocker is survived by his wife, Pam; a brother; a step daughter and two grandchildren. A private memorial is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Cocker Kids’ Foundation, P.O. Box 404, Crawford, CO 81415.

Actress Billie Whitelaw, 82, dies

By GREGORY KATZ The Associated Press LONDON – British actress Billie Whitelaw, who collaborated closely with Irish playwright Samuel Beckett and appeared on stage and screen for decades, has died in a London nursing home at age 82.

Denville Hall general manager Charlotte Schram said Whitelaw died Sunday.

“It’s a great loss. She was a wonderful person,” Schram said.

Whitelaw was well known for her roles in a number of films, including “The Omen” and most recently “Hot Fuzz,”

and for her regular work with Beckett, who once described her as the “perfect actress.”

Their association began with her appearance in Beckett’s “Play” in 1964. Her work in Beckett’s “Not I” inspired the playwright to produce a piece specially for her, “Footfalls.”

She also appeared in his “Happy Days” and “Rockaby.”

Whitelaw first appeared on radio when she was 11 and made her stage debut in 1950.

She made more than 50 movies, including Alfred Hitchcock’s “Frenzy” in 1972, and worked with a number of film greats, including Albert Finney in “Charlie Bubbles.”

She joined the National Theatre Company in the early 1960s, playing a number of lead roles, and continued playing major roles on stage for several more decades.

Her son Mathew Muller said, “She had an incredible career – but first and foremost she was my mum, and that’s who I will miss.”

He said she had helped him recover from meningitis when he was 5 and that he had spent much time with her in the last year of her life, when she was ill. She spent the past four years of her life in Denville Hall, a care home used by many retired actors.

NEW YORK – Joe Cocker, the raspy-voiced British singer known for his frenzied cover of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” the teary ballad “You Are So Beautiful” and a contorted performing style uncannily parodied by John Belushi on “Saturday Night Live,” has died. He was 70.

His London-based agent, Barrie Marshall, said Cocker died Monday of lung cancer in Colorado, where he has lived for the past two decades.

Cocker, an interpreter more than a writer, became a star through his dazzling transformation of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Featuring a gospel-styled arrangement and furious call and response between Cocker and the backup singers, the song became a No. 1 hit in England and the highlight of his characteristically manic set at the Woodstock festival in 1969.

In a statement Monday, Paul McCartney remembered hearing Cocker’s cover of the song he and John Lennon co-wrote for Ringo Starr and finding it “just mind blowing,” a “soul anthem.”

“I was forever grateful for him for doing that,” McCartney said. “I knew him through the years as a good mate, and I was so sad to hear that he had been ill and really sad to hear today

Cocker, who received an Order of the British Empire in 2011 for his contribution to music, released 40 albums and continued to tour after the hits stopped. His other popular covers included “Feelin’ Alright,” “The Letter” and “Cry Me a River,” a song previously recorded by one of Cocker’s greatest influences, Ray Charles.

His voice, at times so worn it seemed in danger of shredding, was just one part of his legend. No Cocker fan could forget his intense, twitchy stage presence, his arms flailing, his hips stretching, his face contorting. Among those watching were Belushi, whose expert imitation became a feature of his early National Lampoon shows and eventually a part of popular history when he joined Cocker in 1976 for a duet of “Feelin’ Alright” on “Saturday Night Live.”

Years later, Cocker told The Associated Press’ Mary Campbell that he was playing an imaginary piano and air guitar while singing – the elements that contributed to this unique style.

Report: Business linked to appointee saw CPS boost

CHICAGO – A Chicago Board of Education member appointed

by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2013 has stake in companies that have seen a boost in the business they get from the city’s schools, a newspaper reported Monday.

From 2010 until Deborah Quazzo’s June 2013 appointment, money paid to companies offering ACT prep and online tutoring that the venture capitalist invested in totaled $930,000. Since then, the companies have received an additional $2.9 million in Chicago Public Schools business, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

One of the five companies will receive another $1.6 million this year from a school district contract, the newspaper reported.

Quazzo said she didn’t see a conflict of interest with her position on the public board and has recused herself from school board votes on contracts with companies in which she has a stake.

“It’s my belief I need to invest in companies and philanthropic organizations who improve outcomes for children,” she said.

She said she hasn’t concealed her involvement in the companies.

The newspaper, citing records it obtained, said she disclosed her links to only two of five companies on a recent ethics statement.

Chicago Public Schools spokesman Bill McCaffrey said Quazzo wasn’t required to list the other companies because those deals were made with individual schools, not the entire district.

In the April ethics statement, which is the most recent one available, Quazzo said she doesn’t receive a salary from the companies. However, she could profit if they are sold.

Congressman urges completion of levee project

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The congressman whose district includes the Missouri Bootheel region is urging President Barack Obama to support plans to complete a long-delayed levee project.

The Southeast Missourian reported that U.S. Rep. Jason Smith, a Republican, sent a letter to the president last week, a day after some environmentalists, local government and civic leaders asked Obama to halt the St. Johns Bayou and New Madrid Floodway project.

Plans call for the Army Corps of Engineers to spend $165 million to close a 1,500-foot gap in the Mississippi River levee system.

Lake Shore Drive reopens after early morning accident

CHICAGO – A section of Chicago’s iconic Lake Shore Drive that was closed after a wrong-way car crash left one person dead and several others injured has

reopened.

Chicago police spokeswoman Janel Sedevic said the three-car accident happened Monday before 3 a.m. A driver was heading south in the northbound lanes when his car struck two other vehicles. The driver was

pronounced dead at the scene.

Others were taken to area hospitals.

A portion of Lake Shore Drive heading north on the city’s South Side was closed for hours during the morning commute.

Police are investigating.

Springfield mayor predicts ‘very’ tight budget

SPRINGFIELD – The mayor of Springfield says he anticipates the “most difficult” budget he’s had to put together.

Mayor Mike Houston told The Springfield State Journal-Register for a story published over the weekend that it’s a “very, very tight budget.”

For three years, Springfield officials have been making cuts.

City officials say there aren’t many obvious places left to make reductions.

SEOUL, South Korea – Key North Korean websites are back online after an hours-long shutdown that comes amid heightened tensions with the U.S. over Pyongyang’s alleged hacking attack on Sony Pictures.

Internet access to the North’s official Korean Central News Agency and the Rodong Sinmun newspaper were working normally Tuesday.

South Korean officials said those sites, all of which have servers abroad, were earlier inaccessible. The sites are the main channels for official news from the North Korean government.

The brief Internet outage came as U.S. officials vow to respond to the Sony hacking that escalated to threats of terror attacks against U.S. movie theaters and caused Sony to cancel the release of a movie that mocks North Korea.

North Korea has denied involvement in the hack.

Judge OKs Oklahoma’s lethal injection protocol

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma’s lethal injection protocols are constitutional and the state can proceed with the scheduled executions of four death row inmates early next year, a federal judge ruled on Monday.

U.S. District Judge Stephen Friot denied a request for a preliminary injunction that was requested by a group of 21 Oklahoma death row inmates who argued the use of the sedative midazolam as the

first drug in a three-drug combination the state administers risks subjecting them to unconstitutionally cruel and unusual punishment.

The inmates sued after the April 29 execution of Clayton Lockett, who writhed on the gurney, mumbled and lifted his head during his 43-minute execution that the state tried to halt before it was over. Lockett’s execution was the first in Oklahoma using midazolam, which also has been used in problematic executions in Ohio and Arizona.

Judge skeptical of immigration challenge

WASHINGTON – A federal judge on Monday appeared deeply skeptical of an Arizona sheriff’s lawsuit seeking to halt President Barack Obama’s plan to spare nearly 5 million people from deportation.

U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell questioned whether Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio had legal standing to challenge the immigration program announced last month. She suggested the topic is better left for Congress and the Obama administration to sort out.

In the first courtroom battle over Obama’s plan, Arpaio’s lawyer Larry Klayman said the president violated the Constitution by doing an end-run around Congress. He argued that the program would let more illegal immigrants enter the country and commit crimes, burdening law enforcement.

By JONATHAN LEMIRE and COLLEEN LONG The Associated Press NEW YORK – As the New York Police Department mourns two of their own, Mayor Bill de Blasio pleaded for a pause in protests and rancor amid a widening rift with those in a grieving force who accuse him of creating a climate of mistrust that contributed to the execution of two officers.

De Blasio called Monday for a halt of political statements until the after funerals of the slain officers, an appeal to both sides in a roiling dispute centered on the deaths of black men at the hands of white police officers.

“We are in a very difficult moment. Our focus has to be on these families,” de Blasio said Monday at police headquarters. “I think it’s a time for everyone to put aside political debates, put aside protests, put aside all of the things that we will talk about in all due time.”

De Blasio’s relations with the city’s police unions have

tumbled to an extraordinary new low in the aftermath of Saturday’s shooting – an ambush the gunman claimed was retaliation for the police-involved deaths of Eric Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

In a display of defiance, dozens of police officers turned their backs to de Blasio at the hospital where the officers died, and union leaders said the mayor had “blood on his hands” for enabling the protesters who have swept the streets of New York this month since a grand jury declined to indict an officer in Garner’s chokehold death.

The killings came as police nationwide are being criticized following Garner’s death and the shooting death of the 18-year-old Brown.

Protests erupted after grand juries declined to charge officers in either case.

On Monday, a prosecutor said a white Milwaukee police officer who was fired after he fatally shot a mentally ill black man in April won’t face criminal charges.

The brother of the slain man, though clearly angry, urged protesters to remain peaceful.

De Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton met with the officers’ grieving families Monday.

“There’s a lot of pain. It’s so hard to make sense of it – how one deeply troubled, violent individual could do this to these good families,” a somber de Blasio said.

Cuba: Has a right to grant asylum to fugitives of U.S. The Associated Press HAVANA – Cuba said Monday it has a right to grant asylum to U.S. fugitives, the clearest sign yet that the communist government has no intention of extraditing America’s most-wanted woman despite the warming of bilateral ties.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has urged President Barack Obama to demand the return of fugitive Joanne Chesimard before restoring full relations under a historic detente announced last week

by Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro.

Chesimard was granted asylum by Fidel Castro after she escaped from the prison where she was serving a sentence for killing a New Jersey state trooper in 1973 during a gunbattle after being stopped on the New Jersey Turnpike.

In a letter to the White House made public Sunday, Christie said Cuba’s asylum for Chesimard – who has changed her name to Assata Shakur – was “an affront to every resident of our state, our country, and in particular, the men and women of the New Jersey State Police, who have tirelessly tried to bring this killer back to justice.”

The first woman ever placed on the FBI’s most-wanted terrorist list was living so openly in Havana that her number was listed in the phone book.

The FBI and the New Jersey State Police have offered a $2 million reward for information leading to Shakur’s capture.

Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman for the White House’s National Security Council, said the Obama administration will “continue to press in our engagement with the Cuban government for the return of U.S. fugitives in Cuba to pursue justice for the victims of their crimes.”

Several infamous convicts and suspects in high-profile American cases live openly in Cuba, as are others convicted of less serious crimes. Among these are a woman convicted of killing a police officer four decades ago, a man sought for a 31-year-old armed robbery, airplane hijackers and dozens of people accused of Medicare and insurance fraud.

“We’ve reminded the U.S. government that in its country they’ve given shelter to dozens and dozens of Cuban citizens,” Vidal said. “Some of them accused of horrible crimes, some accused of terrorism, murder and kidnapping, and in every case the U.S. government has decided to welcome them.”

In Cuba’s first detailed public response to Obama’s historic announcement last week, Vidal said Cuba is open to all of Obama’s moves to improve relations and strengthen private enterprise and civil society on the island. That includes U.S. equipment to improve the Cuban Internet and U.S. exports to Cuba’s new class of private business owners.

“Our president has said we welcome President Obama’s decision to introduce the most significant changes in relations with Cuba in 54 years,” Vidal said. “That includes the entire package.”

MILWAUKEE – A white Milwaukee police officer fired after fatally shooting a mentally ill black man in April won’t face criminal charges, the county’s top prosecutor said Monday, while the U.S. attorney said hours later there will be a federal investigation of the case.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said Christopher Manney won’t be charged because he shot Dontre Hamilton in self-defense.

Manney is at least the third white police officer to avoid charges in the past month after a confrontation that led to

a black man’s death.

“Based on all the evidence and analysis presented in this report, I come to the conclusion that Officer Manney’s use of force in this incident was justified self-defense and that defense cannot be reasonably overcome to establish a basis to charge Officer Manney with a crime,” Chisholm said in a statement.

After waiting eight months for the decision, Hamilton’s family reacted with disappointment and anger. At an emotional news conference on the steps of the federal courthouse, family attorneys said they had called for a federal investigation.

Donors want to know gifts will be appreciated Due to recent media coverage regarding the replacement of the marquee at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, I felt compelled to provide the facts regarding my investment.

Several months ago, I received a call from Randy Green’s secretary asking me to join them for a lunch meeting. At this meeting, they presented me with a rendering of a new marquee for the Rialto that included, as part of the sign, recognition of the donor’s family. They asked for a contribution of $350,000.

In the days following this initial meeting, I came to the conclusion that this was an excellent opportunity to give back to the Joliet area as well as honor my loving parents, Michael and Mary. I contacted Mr. Green and told him that if they could replace my name with my parents’ name on the sign, we could move forward with the investment.

At a later date, Mr. Green contacted me and told me that he was presenting the new marquee to the appropriate city officials prior to an anticipated public unveiling. Several months later, he called to tell me they would be unveiling the new marquee at their annual Festival of Trees event in November. Mr. Green invited my family and me to attend the event.

Since that time, there has been some controversy over the overall design of the marquee as well as the appearance of my parents’ names on the sign. Many people have assumed that myself or my family had participated in the design of the new marquee – this is simply not true. I have no control over the appearance of the marquee. The only stipulation that I had was that my parents’ names appear on the marquee as presented to me at my meeting with the Rialto board.

Over the past few weeks, I have become aware of numerous negative and unkind comments made by concerned citizens about both myself and my three sons. This public reaction was completely unexpected.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Over the past several years, I have made numerous charitable contributions to wonderful organizations throughout the Joliet area and beyond. Each of these investments have proven to be worthwhile and appreciated by those who received them. They include Joliet Junior College (scholarship fund in my wife’s name), Mayo Clinic (principal benefactor), Silver Cross Hospital (Carolyn J. Czerkies Pavilion at the cancer center), International Myeloma Foundation (annual Carolyn Czerkies Memorial Golf Outing), Will Grundy Medical Clinic, and MorningStar Mission.

Recently, I read in the St. Raymond’s Cathedral bulletin about a group of college students who would be spending their Christmas vacations in the Philippines building shelters for the homeless. They were in need of some additional funds to make this trip, and I happily contributed to this cause. For this donation, I received a beautiful thank-you letter from the director of this program, Natalie Bayci.

Many, many people make similar donations to organizations they hold dear to their hearts. Like myself, they simply want to know that their contribution is appreciated. Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion that the donation made to the Rialto Square Theatre and the city of Joliet will not be viewed in a positive way.

At this time, I would be very happy to receive my donation returned to me so I can seek out other charitable ways to honor my parents.

Once again, I would like to reiterate that I did not design the new marquee and have no control over its appearance or construction. The only stipulation I had is for my parents’ names to appear on the marquee as originally presented to me.

NIU and Illinois football teams are going bowling It’s beginning to look a lot like bowl season, and fans of two college football teams from Illinois are getting about as excited as kids on Christmas morning.

We’ve gotten accustomed to bowl game invitations for the Northern Illinois University Huskies. This year, the University of Illinois Fighting Illini will join them on the bowl circuit.

NIU’s game comes first. The Huskies, 11-2 and winners of the Mid-American Conference championship, will play at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Boca Raton Bowl against the Marshall Thundering Herd, sporting a 12-1 record as champion of Conference USA.

Then at noon Friday, the Fighting Illini, with their 6-6 record, will play in Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl against Louisiana Tech, 8-5 and runner-up in Conference USA, having lost to Marshall (NIU’s bowl foe) by only 3 points in the title game.

Several storylines kindle our interest.

For all of NIU’s football success in recent years – the Huskies have won 11 or more games for five straight years – the team has a two-game losing streak in bowl games. NIU last won a bowl victory against Arkansas State in the 2012 GoDaddy. com Bowl.

As for Illinois, are the Fighting Illini finally righting the ship after

And we think that maybe it’s time to give fans of both teams an exciting Christmas present by finally scheduling an Illinois-NIU football game.

By STEVE MILLAR Shaw Media Correspondent LANSING – Romeoville’s Cherish Smith and Jahari Smith aren’t related, but that doesn’t stop Cherish, a senior, from playing the big sister role from time to time with freshman Jahari.

“She really helps me out,” Jahari said. “When I was missing those layups, she told me just to keep my head up and keep shooting. That helped a lot.”

Jahari shook off the missed layups Monday to finish with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Cherish was equally dominant, totaling 15 points and 12 rebounds, as the Spartans rode a big second half to a 54-32 win over Joliet West at the T.F. South Holiday Tournament in

Lansing.

“Jahari is a freshman, and she’s learning and coming along,” Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said. “Cherish is a senior and the leader of our team. Those two did a lot for us (Monday).”

Romeoville (10-5) improved to 2-0 in the tournament. Joliet West (2-9) fell to 1-1. Each team will play five games in the round-robin event.

Madi Mulder led the Tigers with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Romeoville led just 21-20 at halftime but suffocated West with its pressure defense in the second half. The Tigers shot just 3 of 24 from the field over the final two quarters and committed 18 of their 30 turnovers in the second half.

“We were struggling with our shooting, but we really picked up our defensive pressure.”

“We were struggling with our shooting, but we really picked up our defensive pressure,” Carrasco said. “Our goal is to close this thing out and win this tournament, but we know it’s not going to be easy. We have some tough games left against Bradley and

Peotone.”

Romeoville got scoring from six different players in the third quarter as it outscored Joliet West, 15-3, to pull away.

The balance was in sharp contrast to the first half, when the Smith girls carried the load, combining for 18 of the Spartans’ 21 points.

Joliet West coach John Placher, whose team picked up its second win of the season in its tournament opener against Eisenhower, took some positives away from the loss.

“We played hard in the first half,” Placher said. “We executed what we needed to do and stayed in the game. Romeoville made an adjustment going into the second half.

They put more pressure on us, made us a little nervous,

and that was pretty much the game.

“We’re getting better, though. We’re playing with teams now. We lost to T.F. South by 30 earlier in the season and Romeoville beat T.F. South – so to stay in the game with Romeoville as long as we did, I’m excited.”

Monique Williams added seven points and Kierra Tyler six for the Tigers.

Jamie Hopper contributed seven points for Romeoville, which hopes to finish the week with a tournament title.

“We’ve got to keep our heads in the game, keep our intensity up and not let any missed shots or turnovers or anything get to us,” Cherish Smith said. “We’ve got to have heart to win this tournament.”

Lincoln-Way West beats Kaneland to reach finals

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com OTTAWA – Lincoln-Way West’s girls basketball coach hasn’t particularly liked the way his squad has played in Monday games.

And while a flat performance didn’t prove costly to the unbeaten Warriors in the semifinals of the Ottawa Holiday Tournament, White realizes a similar effort in Tuesday’s gold bracket title game definitely could be problematic.

West used 12-0 runs in each half to remove any late drama in a 59-42 semifinal win over Kaneland.

The Warriors (11-0) meet Yorkville in Tuesday’s 3 p.m. finals.

Pirates, 47-38, in the second semifinal.

“I just thought that we had no energy tonight,” coach Ryan White said. “I thought as a team that we could press – and to their credit they handled it pretty well – and we had to do some different things.

“I just thought that our energy was not where it needed to be tonight and where it needs to be tomorrow night.

“We’ve struggled in Monday games, and I don’t know what it is. But I’d rather play bad and win than coming out of here with a loss. I told the girls at the beginning of the year that good teams can win when they play bad and through 26 games, they’re not all going to be perfect. But can you figure out a way to

get it done, which we did tonight.”

The score was tied at 11 in the opening quarter when West went on its initial 12-0 run, which stretched into the second period. Dani Morgan, who led all scorers with 19 points, scored the final two baskets of the first quarter while Deven Bax (12 points) added three points during the spurt.

Kaneland managed to close the gap to 22-18 in the second quarter. However, the Warriors were able to stretch their lead to 33-21 at halftime.

“A win’s a win, but we have to come out stronger tomorrow if we want to get that win,” Bax said.

“We weren’t focused at all, and we didn’t come out strong. So we have to come

out ready to go.

“Our biggest thing is definitely our team chemistry.

If we all work together, we can be super good, no matter who’s on the floor. And our bench is amazing, and we’d be nothing without them. We all come together as one and play as a team.”

The Knights got a layup from Bailey Crimmins (14 points) to open up the second half, but West responded by going on another 12-0 run to break things open.

Kaitlyn Mathews kicked things off with a 3-pointer, and Emily Atsinger (nine points) and Morgan followed with layups.

Following single free throws by Mathews and Courtney O’Donnell (12 points), Morgan completed

the run with another trey.

West led, 48-32, after three quarters, and Kaneland was unable to get any closer than 15 points back after that.

“We need to play with more energy tomorrow,” Morgan said. “So we’re going to have to do whatever we can in order to get ready for that and hopefully come out and get a win.

“I think that our bench does a great job of keeping us up and keeping us positive, and that’s a big part of it. And then we play as a team out there. We can all shoot and we can all drive, so that’s a pretty deadly weapon. I think that the best thing that we do is our pressing. We get the ball ahead and running against teams since we’re so fast.”

In the third quarter, Garvey’s second 3-point bomb gave the Celtics their largest

lead of the game at 23-10 with seven minutes in the quarter.

Garvey finished with nine points. Finnin hit two 3-pointers and pulled down five of her game-high 12 boards in the quarter.

“Providence played very well, and we responded and gave them a battle, “ Finnin said. “We just didn’t make the little plays to help us win this game.”

With 2:10 left in the contest, Central sophomore Rebecca Gorman’s driving layup cut

the Celtic lead to 33-30. With 55 seconds left, Jurges nailed a pair of clutch free throws that increased the Celtic lead to 35-30. Finnin followed with her fourth trey of the game to complete the scoring.

Jurges is second in career points in Lady Celtic history. The senior guard has the opportunity to eclipse the 1,500-career-point mark this week.

“I’m really used to the box and one defense, and my teammates really picked up the

scoring for us,” Jurges said. “I had to come up and nail those free throws that helped us get this victory.”

Central junior Hayley Holmes chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds for the Knights.

Providence will meet Bremen at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the second game of pool play. Lincoln-Way Central will meet the hosts at 2:30 p.m.

“We were really sluggish tonight,” Providence coach Eileen Copenhaver said.

“Mary had a nice game for us, and we battled tonight to pick up a nice win.”

Minooka (9-3) defeated Andrew, 44-29, and Plainfield South fell to Lincoln-Way North, 71-58, in earlier Medieval Classic action.

FRANKFORT – Providence 5-foot-10 senior forward Maeve Garvey epitomized the definition of redemption in the Celtics’ 35-33 victory over Lincoln-Way Central.

In a first-round contest in Lincoln-Way East’s Medieval Classic Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament on Monday afternoon, Garvey’s play defined the word.

With Providence clinging to a 35-33 lead with 25 seconds to go in regulation, Garvey bricked a pair of crucial free throws.

Led by senior Candace Finnin (20 points), who scored 14 of Central’s 23 second-half points, the Knights were in position to tie or win the thriller. With 11 seconds left, Knights coach Chris Fetherling called time out and drew up a play for the red-hot Finnin.

Finnin drove to the hoop with 3.9 seconds left and the ball was knocked out of bounds off Providence. After another timeout, Finnin fired up an 8-footer, missed and grabbed her own rebound.

Garvey saved the Celtics with a block of Finnin’s second shot and bounced it off the senior out of bounds. Redemption.

The Celtics inbounded the ball to senior guard Alyssa Jurges (10 points), who dribbled away the remaining seconds for Providence’s 10th win of the season.

“After missing the two free throws, I really had to do something to help us win,” Garvey said. “I was able to block the shot of a great player [Finnin]. We really had to grind this one out for a win.

It wasn’t pretty. We are going for the gold. We want to win the tournament.”

Providence (10-4) closed out a sluggish first quarter with a 7-0 run to grab a 7-4 first quarter lead. Finnin’s long-range bomb ended a 6½-minute Knight scoring drought that carried over from the first quarter to pull Central within 10-7.

Joliet Central falls to York in tourney opener

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent OSWEGO – Joliet Central’s girls basketball team lost Monday afternoon to York, 63-33, in the opening round of the Oswego East Holiday Classic.

The Steelmen (3-7) jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind junior Monica Barefield with 4:13 left in the first quarter.

York (7-4) then went on an 18-0 run and took control the rest of the way. Barefield hit a 3-pointer to make the score 20-9 with 5:53 left before half,

but the senior-laden Lady Dukes went on another big run (15-2) to push the lead to 35-11 at the half.

“After a pretty good start, we reverted back to bad habits. We forgot what we were doing. Everyone has to be on the same page,” Central coach Brian Reed said.

“It’s there, as we showed at the beginning. It’s so much about our confidence. We tend to get down on ourselves when things don’t go our way.

Give York credit – they start all seniors and took us out of just about everything.”

During the crucial second quarter, York shot 9 of 15 from the field and limited Central to only six shots, hitting just two. In addition, the Steelmen committed 12 turnovers in the quarter.

The third quarter saw Central play even with York (1212) as it shot 5 for 11 from the field, led by junior Morgan Jones, who scored six points in the quarter.

“Morgan (Jones) played outstanding today, as she has been battling the flu. This is not an excuse, but we have only had two full team prac-

tices all season because of illness. It has really hit us hard this season,” Reed said.

The Lady Dukes outscored Central, 16-10, in the final quarter.

“We all play hard, even when the second team went in during the final quarter,” Reed said. “We just have to play within ourselves. The season is young; and if we can do those things, we will be fine.”

Jones led Central with 10 points, followed by Barefield with nine. As a team, the Steelmen shot 14 of 42 from

the field and 4 of 10 from the three-throw line.

York was led by senior Sarah Milkowski with 21; and the Lady Dukes took 20 more shots from the field, going 23 of 62. They were 12 of 17 from the free-throw line.

Joliet Central will take on Aurora Central Catholic – which lost, 57-40, to Plainfield North – at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the blue gym as part of the consolation bracket.

Plainfield North takes on York in the championship bracket, also at 11:30 a.m.

Most basketball coaches will say that, and Morris girls coach Kate Carey is no exception. For the second straight game Monday afternoon, the Redskins held an opponent to single digits in the first half and cruised to a victory. Morris led Sandwich, 27-9, at halftime in the ninth-place game at the Ottawa Tournament and came away with a 44-33 win.

Earlier in the day, Morris beat Kankakee, 32-15, after holding the Kays scoreless in the second quarter to take a 15-7 lead into halftime.

“Defense was a big focus for us today,” Carey said.

“We knew if we held the other teams’ score down, then we would be able to score enough to win.”

In the first half of the win against Sandwich, it was Jessica Ponce doing the scoring for Morris (11-4), delivering eight of her 11 points. Mya Shannon scored all six of her points in the first half. Leona Burton led the team with 13 points, nine in the second half, while Emily Burling had seven points.

“All season long, we’ve been a well-balanced team,” Carey said. “We always seem to have someone pick up the slack. It might not be the same person every night, but that’s good. Everyone knows how to score if they have to.”

The game was tied at 2 early, but Morris went on a 10-0 run.

Ponce, Burling and Smith each made a basket in the stretch, while Shannon had a 3-pointer

and a free throw. In the second quarter, Ponce scored six points as the Redskins pulled away to the big halftime lead.

“Ponce and Burton really had a good tournament for us,” Carey said. “Really, everyone stepped in and did what we asked them to do.

“We finished the tournament with two wins, so that’s a positive heading into a long break without a game [Morris does not play again until Jan.

6]. We have 11 wins so far, and that’s two more than we had all of last year. If someone had said we would be 11-4 after 15 games, I wouldn’t have been surprised.”

Against Kankakee, Shannon led the way with 16 points, while Ponce scored 12.

On Saturday, Morris trailed LaSalle-Peru, 31-23, at halftime. By holding L-P to just three points in the third quarter, the Redskins ral-

lied to take a 35-34 lead into the fourth quarter. However, the fourth quarter remained close the whole way and, with 4.8 seconds left and the game tied at 47, LaSalle-Peru’s Riley Brovelli was fouled and made the second of her two free throws. Shannon dribbled up the court after the inbounds pass but could not get a shot off before the buzzer, giving the Cavaliers a 48-47 win.

Shannon led Morris with 12 points, while Burling scored 11 and Julie Jurasits added eight.

Morris led, 16-12, after the first quarter, but LaSalle-Peru made eight of its first nine shots in the second and outscored the Redskins, 19-7, in the quarter to take the 31-23 lead into intermission.

“I was thrilled with how we came out and played in the second half,” Carey said. “But I was very disappointed with our first half. We have to learn how to play four quarters instead of two.”

Brawner-Henley averaged 17.7 points and 11.3 rebounds in victories over Trevecca Nazarene (96-71), Northern Michigan (68-58) and No. 17 Grand Valley State (7865). After Sunday’s win, she collected her seventh double-double in 11 starts for the Flyers this season.

For the week, Brawner-Henley shot .475 (19 for 40) from the field and was 14 for 16 (.875) at the free-throw line.

Northwestern makes short work of Illinois-Chicago The ASSOCIATED PRESS EVANSTON – Bryant McIntosh scored 22 points and Alex Olah had 17 to lead Northwestern to a 63-46 victory over undermanned Illinois-Chicago on Monday.

McIntosh was 7 of 9 from the field and hit all six of his free throws for Northwestern (8-4). Olah hit 5 of 10 shots, 6 of 10 free throws, grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocks.

D’Juan Miller led Illinois-Chicago (3-10) with 14 points and seven assists. Jake Wiegand had a game-high 10 rebounds, as the Flames dropped their third game in a row.

Illinois-Chicago was without top scorer Jay Harris, averaging 15.8 points a game.

He was a game-time decision because of a strained ligament in his right knee, which he sustained in practice Sunday.

“We started fast with a lot of energy,” said McIntosh, who also had four assists.

The victory was the second for Northwestern since coach Chris Collins and his staff

made changes to create a more upbeat atmosphere before games.

Before a win against Western Michigan, players formed a line and locked arms to stress team unity. Chairs also were removed from locker room to get the players on their feet and boost energy levels.

“I’m not one to just stand pat,” Collins said. “I’ll change lineups. I’ll change what we’re doing. We’ve changed our pregame in terms of how much we say to the guys. We’re trying to be more rah-rah versus locked into strategy just to get some life.”

After Lance Whitaker gave Illinois-Chicago a 2-0 lead, McIntosh and Olah combined to score the next 16 points. The Wildcats held Illinois-Chicago scoreless for seven-plus minutes, which Ahman Fells finally stopped at the 12:16 mark.

“In these last two games, it was more like the defense our program is accustomed to seeing,” said Collins, whose team

blocked nine shots and forced 10 turnovers. “Sometimes you have to get exposed in order to embrace change, that’s what that game [against Central Michigan] did for us.”

The Wildcats connected on only 6 of 35 tries in first half and 15 of 60 overall, as their season-long struggles in the field continued.

“In the first half, when we were hitting some lulls, there were some shots that Jay probably would have been able to knock down for us,” head coach Howard Moore said.

“But we’ve had those lulls with him in the lineup, too.”

MISSING PIECES

Illinois-Chicago’s leading scorer, Jay Harris, watched the game in a walking boot on the bench but could return to action later this week. One week earlier, the fifth-year guard was selected as the Horizon League Player of the Week on the heels of a career-high 32-point performance against Central Florida.

ROMEOVILLE – The ninth-ranked Lewis University men’s volleyball team was ranked second by the league’s coaches in the Preseason Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Poll.

The league released the 2015 Preseason All-MIVA Team, with Lewis tying for a league-high three honors.

The squad is comprised of 10 members (one libero). Senior outside hitters Geoff Powell and Greg Petty were named to the team, and Lucas Yanez earned the libero selection.

Powell was named an AVCA All-American First Team selection last season.

He had 416 kills (.347 percentage, 3.89 per set). He added 27 aces, earning All-MIVA First Team and All-MIVA Tournament Team honors.

In 2012, Powell was an AVCA

All-American Second Team selection.

Yanez was named to the All-MIVA Second Team last season after recording 249 digs (2.33 per set). He earned two MIVA Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2014.

Petty picked up AVCA All-America Honorable Mention accolades last season. He recorded 357 kills (3.43 per set, .328 percentage). He led the team with 43 aces while recording a career-best 76 blocks. Petty was named the AVCA National Player of the Week on Jan. 28, 2014.

Lewis opens the 2015 season Jan. 5 at UC-Irvine. First up is an exhibition Jan. 2 at home against Windsor (Ontario). First serve against Windsor is set for 7 p.m.

Rose keys Bulls’ big 4th in victory over Raptors The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Derrick Rose scored 29 points, Jimmy Butler added 27 points and 11 rebounds, and the Bulls snapped the Toronto Raptors’ six-game winning streak with a 129-120 victory Monday night.

Rose scored 15 of the Bulls’ franchise-record 49 points in the fourth quarter.

The Bulls, who have won three straight, got Rose and Taj Gibson back after each missed two games. Rose was ill and Gibson was out with an ankle injury.

Rose’s jumper over Kyle Lowry put the Bulls up, 106-100, with 4:12 left. He put away the game with a 3-pointer to make it 118-105 with 1:17 left.

Lowry scored 34 points and Jonas Valanciunas finished with 20 for Toronto, which led by 12 in the third quarter. Lowry scored 18

points in the fourth.

After Lowry’s runner gave the Raptors a one-point lead, the Bulls scored six to make it 100-95. Rose and Joakim Noah had back-toback baskets and Nikola Mirotic capped it off with a pair of free throws before Raptors coach Dwane Casey burned a timeout with the Chicago crowd on its feet.

Mirotic finished with 12 points and Aaron Brooks had 17 points off the bench.

James Johnson put the Raptors up, 80-68, with 6:35 left in the third quarter, but the Bulls scored eight unanswered to tie it in the final minute of the period. Pau Gasol found Gibson for an alley-oop dunk to tie it at 80.

James Johnson finished with 16 points for the Raptors.

The Raptors began a sixgame road trip Monday after playing a league-high 17 home games.

Lowry had a follow shot with 0.1 seconds left to give the Raptors a 66-60 lead at the half.

Nurse navigator at Joliet cancer care helps patients through treatments

Those emotionally charged words – and the ominous thoughts that may follow – often result in the patient remembering little else from the conversation.

Then come the major decisions patients have to make about the course of their treatment – if they even want treatment – and sudden, often drastic, changes in their daily lifestyles of work, child-rearing and finances.

That’s why Presence Cancer Care in Joliet recently began a breast cancer nurse navigator program. A nurse navigator is assigned to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to help them and their families through the treatment – and often post-treatment – process.

“We help get them through the system, keep them informed and keep them on track,” said Jennifer Yanak, Presence Cancer Care nurse navigator. “One big part of what we do is assess patients for barriers to care.”

Yanak said services to patients include discussing possible hair loss during chemotherapy, sorting through financial matters relating to their illness, ensuring tests get scheduled and finding resources for breast prostheses.

“It’s about helping patients get through being diagnosed and then getting them through everything else,” Yanak said, “because they’re so overwhelmed.”

Previously, chemotherapy nurses, other hospital staff or the patient’s primary physician and nurse might provide that assistance, but Yanak said having a nurse navigator whose specialty is breast cancer and who is on-site is a big advantage to the patients.

The Perezes – both diagnosed with MS – helped to re-establish the Peer Visitor Program for the Greater Illinois Chapter in 2011 and have since demonstrated a commitment to providing a much-needed service to those living with MS in nursing and rehabilitation facilities who

may feel isolated and alone.

The program began with visits to the Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center, and they now volunteer at five facilities, seeing up to seven people per visit. For the past 17 years, the Perezes also have held a fundraising event called “Skydiving for MS.” The event has raised more

than $25,000 in past years.

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often-disabling disease that interrupts the flow of information in the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve.

The certification indicates that Kuo possesses the knowledge and techniques required to perform evaluations and impairment ratings on injured or ill workers. An impairment rating tells the degree of an injured worker’s deviation away from their normal health status and functionality.

Dear Doctor K: I had a vasectomy many years ago. I’ve since remarried, and my new wife wants to have children. Can my vasectomy be reversed?

Dear Reader: A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that is done to make a man sterile (unable to father children).

Normally, sperm – the male reproductive cells that fertilize a woman’s egg -- are made in the testicle. Sperm travel away from the testicle through a tube called the vas deferens. There are two vas deferens, one for each testicle on each side. The vas deferens connect with a reservoir where the sperm is held, ready to be ejaculated during sex. The sperm also mixes with secretions from the prostate gland that keep the sperm alive. When the sperm is ejaculated, it travels through another tube, the urethra, inside the penis.

A vasectomy cuts or blocks the vas deferens.

Once the vas deferens are cut or blocked, sperm cannot pass from the testicle to the reservoir where semen and secretions from the prostate gland are stored.

During ejaculation, this sperm-containing fluid is ejected through the penis during orgasm.

After a vasectomy, a man continues to have normal ejaculations of semen, but the ejaculate no longer contains sperm.

In a traditional vasectomy, the surgeon uses a scalpel to make small incisions in the skin of the scrotum near the base of the penis. (The scrotum is the fleshy sac that contains the testicles.)

Dear Abby: I am three years into a relationship with Harold, a man who is separated but not divorced. We both have grown children. Harold was separated when we got involved. He has since moved in with me and is an active bill-paying member of the home.

I was also separated from a brief marriage when we met, and divorced shortly after we started dating. My assumption was that Harold would also be divorcing.

As of now, the paperwork remains partially filled out, but no legal proceedings have begun.
