The opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal stimulated agricultural development in the region and helped to generate the growth of new business enterprises tied to agriculture.

As towns formed along the canal route, farmers settled in the area and helped spur the economic growth of the Illinois Valley. The efficiency of Chicago’s grain elevators, such as the Rock Island Elevator, allowed the city to compete successfully with St. Louis where grain was loaded in sacks by hand.

Settlement patterns also increased the demand for lumber in the region. The I&M Canal allowed for lumber from Michigan and Wisconsin to be easily processed and shipped on water to markets south, east and west of Chicago.

The eastern end of the I&M Canal was located in the Chicago community of Bridgeport. While little remains of the canal in the location, small remnants still can be found in the area.

The old turning basin, located near the 2800 block of South Ashland Avenue where the South Branch of the Chicago River joins the Sanitary and Ship Canal, still is visible.

To the right of the turning basin is the southern fork of the South Branch known as Bubbly Creek. Plainfield Lions Club raises funds for gift certificates

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A growing number of families are in need of food in Plainfield, and a local Lions Club set out Saturday to offer assistance.

Tod Schnowske, Plainfield Lions Club president, was with his children and dozens of other club members inside the Plainfield Signs shop to prepare to give 129 families a gift certificate for food.

“The community has changed a lot. ... There’s families that need help,” Schnowske said.

The Plainfield Lions Club is in its 67th year of serving the local community, and gift certificate deliveries – or the Christmas “Basket” program – is one of its many outreach

Rialto officials, mayor contemplate funding

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Everyone seems to agree there has to be a better way to fund the Rialto Square Theatre.

But how?

One of the most controversial expenditure in Joliet’s proposed 2016 budget of $289 million has been the $600,000 spent in support of the Rialto Square Theatre.

Much of the controversy in recent budget meetings has centered around one councilman’s objections to the spending. But Rialto volunteers and advocates have joined the debate, urging the city not to

cut funds they say the theater needs.

“I’m not sure what brought the Rialto people out,” said Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, indicating the $600,000 is secure at least for next year.

Councilman Larry Hug has been a lone voice opposing Rialto funding, and O’Dekirk noted the councilman has made the same case for several years. But the mayor, too, says something has to change.

“We have to find another way to do this because the day’s going to come when this money is going to run out,” O’Dekirk said.

Joliet council says no again to Work Order Management System

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City Hall’s onagain, off-again relationship with a new work order system is off again – at least for now.

The City Council last week engaged in a rare tie vote broken by Mayor Bob O’Dekirk who joined the no side to reject a Work Order Management System, which would cost $964,000 to implement and another $129,000 a year to maintain.

During the past several months, the council has delayed votes on the system, approved it, and rejected it after approving it. On Tuesday, the council rejected it a second time with a 5-4 vote.

The system would replace one that city staff say is becoming outdated to the point that there may be no maintenance support in coming months.

Largely used to manage work flow on a daily basis,

the system also has a public component. Utilities Director James Eggen has told the council that residents who file complaints or reports about potholes and other concerns would better be able to follow the progress of the job online with the new system.

City Manager Jim Hock said he was “not sure” whether the new system will be brought to the council again for approval, although he says it is needed.

“We’ll have to continue using what we have,” Hock said. “But at some point it’s going to fail, and we won’t have any support for it.”

The City Council approved the system by a 5-3 vote Nov. 17. But two weeks later, Councilwoman Jan Quillman changed her vote to no after seeing the proposed 2016 budget. The council planned to consider the matter again in light of the budget, which it did when rejecting the system a second time Tuesday.

O’Dekirk’s apparent support for what is typically called a “dedicated funding source.”

That somewhat complicated phrase typically refers to government funds of some sort that are collected for a specific purpose – in this case, the Rialto.

“I have a couple of ideas that I shared with some of the board members,” O’Dekirk said.

He added, however, that he is not in favor of a Rialto tax.

The Rialto is one of several venues in Illinois overseen by civic center authorities. In the Rialto’s case, it’s the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority.

Rialto General Manager Randy Green said other civic center authorities in Illinois are allotted specific portions of hotel/motel taxes, liquor taxes or food and beverage taxes.

In Joliet, he said, the Rialto in past years was allocated a portion of the city’s hotel/ motel tax. Later, Joliet made Rialto contributions out of casino tax dollars. That ended when the recession came.

Instead, Rialto funding now comes out of the city’s general fund and becomes a part of the budget debate each year.

Having a dedicated funding source would allow the Rialto to make long-term plans,

Green said.

“It gives us the ability to predict for an extended period of time the revenues we should be expecting,” he said.

“It does diminish the uncertainties.”

Both Green and Dan Vera, chairman of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, said they were glad to hear O’Dekirk’s interest in a dedicated funding source. They plan to take him up on it in the new year.

“I was obviously pleased to hear the mayor has some ideas and thoughts, and wants to begin discussions,” Vera said.

NEW LENOX – For the second year in a row, the Will County Trail Riders helped raise money for The Salvation Army with miniature horses.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, members of the Trail Riders stood outside the WalMart on Route 30 in New Lenox with four miniature horses and four goats while ringing the bell for the donation bucket.

“It makes people smile – everybody that walks by has put a smile on their face,” said Sherry Miller, a Will County Trail Riders board member.

According to Miller, the Trail Riders helped raise more than $700 last year and hoped to match that amount this year.

Larry Wiers, Plainfield Lions Club event chairman, said to club members Saturday that among the many responses from families about their efforts was that Plainfield was a great community to live in.

“They thank us for making the burden a little bit lighter,” he said.

In a news release, Wiers also said a response from one family was that it was the first time they have smiled “in a long, long time.” Another family thanked them and said, “Now we will have a Christmas.”

Wiers has chaired the Christmas “Basket” program for the past 17 years, and in that

As the Plainfield area has grown, so has the number of families in need, and the club has responded by increasing its “basket” allocation to $17,800 this year, according to the release.

About 14 percent of people in Illinois are at risk of hunger and lack adequate access to food, according to the Illinois No Kid Hungry campaign, which was started by Share Our Strength and the Greater

Chicago Food Depository.

Children in poverty and struggling families go hungry because federal food and nutrition programs that serve them are frequently not taken advantage of, according to the campaign.

Low enrollment in the programs is attributed by the campaign to a lack of awareness, cultural or language barriers and complicated enrollment procedures.

Schnowske, who also is the Plainfield Academy principal, said he feels it’s his responsibility to be more involved in the community.

“This is a great way to do it,” he said.

He said one of his favorite cliches is “rise by lifting others.”

“The more you can help others, the better,” he said.

Unfortunately, many treatment centers specialize in treating only one or the other, making diagnosis, care and treatment less effective.

“All of our substance abuse staff are either Master’s level or are dually credentialed by degree or certification making them very knowledgeable about addiction and mental health,” Davis explained.

“Its really wonderful to see people get what they need under one roof,” Davis said. “Patients experience greater improvement when they are not shuttled between different agencies for care.”

Patients also often have comorbid medical illnesses since their addictions can lead to conditions like HIV, hepatitis and cardiac disease.

“Because we’re a hospital we’re able to work with that, too,” Davis said. “If someone shows up to their appointment in withdrawal or has a seizure we’re steps away from the emergency department. If they become suicidal it’s not an ambulance ride to the nearest hospital, it’s a wheelchair ride across the hall.”

PLAINFIELD – Canadian National has relocated its hot box safety sensor from Renwick Road to near Division Street, which could cause fewer traffic stoppages in Plainfield, according to a village e-news update sent Friday afternoon.

The move means trains will stop farther south along the EJ&E railroad that crosses Plainfield streets at 17 different points, decreasing the amount of stoppages on state routes in the village.

“With this relocation, less crossings in town will be impeded if the safety sensor is triggered,” the update stated, noting Renwick Road still will be affected by stalled trains.

Train stoppages have been a major source of frustration for Plainfield residents, village officials have said. Stoppages range from 15 minutes to several hours and block traffic, causing delays to emergency vehicles, school buses and regular traffic.

One of Manion’s favorite pieces came from a woman in Joliet who read the original story in The Herald-News in 2010.

She wanted Manion to have it because she was getting rid of stuff in her home and knew Manion would take good care of it.

Another she received, as a result of the first article, came from a woman who lived in Elwood. It actually came from Bethlehem and is carved in the shape of a bell.

Manion has one that came from Alaska; the figures are dressed as Eskimos and the manger is an igloo.

The tiniest piece she has is shaped like a mushroom cap and all the tiny figures are carved into the wood. A fellow church member found it while she was on a mission trip in Chatham, but it originally came from Peru.

She has one in which the pieces are bears that came from Minnesota and another that is made of cardboard

January is National Blood Donor Appreciation Month because it is when donations are needed most. Jennifer Babec knows firsthand the importance of blood drives. Her daughter, Taylor, required 22 blood transfusions when she battled lymphoma when she was a little girl. Taylor’s cancer is in remission, and Jennifer coordinates drives so there is an ample supply for others who need transfusions.

Manion has long since stopped putting up a traditional Christmas tree, because the Nativities take up all the room. Her only tree is a tabletop Thomas Kincaid piece. Many of the ornaments on that are Nativities as well.

When her great-grandchildren come for Christmas, they know they can look but not touch the Nativities. Except for one set – it’s a cloth

stuffed doll Nativity that the kids can play with. And they are just fine with that.

It takes several women four to five days off and on to get everything unwrapped and set up for the holidays.

One in particular, from her oldest sister, Marjorie Garascia, is musical. It’s special because it came from her sister, Manion said.

Her most recent piece came just this year from friend Bev Lewis. Along with the ceramic Nativity, letters spell out the word “Faith.” It also lights up.

“I didn’t expect it,” Man-

ion said.

When other families sit around a Christmas tree strung with glowing lights, Manion is enjoying the sounds and sights of hundreds of Nativities, and each one feels as special as the next.

“I think it’s neat that people think of me when they see them,” she said. “So I do try to remember where each came from.”

Several years ago, I wrote about Frieda Manion, who collects Nativity scenes. At that time she had been collecting for a few years and it seemed every nook and cranny of her Channahon home had a Nativity – from a couple inches to several feet high.

“I really like [Nativities],” Manion said. “There are so many different ones; it’s unbelievable.”

Five years later, Manion has had to expand her collection into her screened-in sunroom in order to display every piece.

I’m not sure what the count is, and I don’t think Manion has an exact number either, but just about every one of her Nativities has a story behind it and a special memory about the one who bought it.

Manion’s daughter, Connie Holt, and a couple of her friends are the prime finders of the pieces. If they see one while they are out and about, whether at a garage sale or a gift shop, they buy it for her.

Holt’s friend, Linda Walker, is like Manion’s unadopted daughter, she said. So each one that Walker finds for her is special.

Widowed in middle age, Joliet woman built vibrant life for herself

In addition to Sunday Mass and weekday afternoon Eucharistic Adoration, Marlene belonged to the church’s Altar and Rosary Society. Marlene also was a member of the Wednesday and Thursday Seniors at St. Joseph Park.

In addition, Marlene bowled in a morning league in her pre-career days and an evening league during the years she worked. Marlene never bowled well, Karen said. She bowled for fun.

“She was happiest when she was with people,” Karen said. “She did not like being alone; she didn’t like not being active. It was hard the last two months when she was sick. She did not like to sit in her house and watch TV. That’s not what she thought life was about. She thought life was about being with people you love – family, friends or new people. She was always willing to explore different avenues and different possibilities.”

So when a grandson decided to get married in Mexico a few years ago, Marlene — never out of the country and rarely traveling by plane – flew down. When a granddaughter moved to Rhode Island, Marlene packed up and visited her, too.

“Everywhere she went, she was so friendly, you’d think she fit in forever,” Karen said.

Marlene was 82 when she died Oct. 31

JOLIET – Marlene Ancel of Joliet was 46 when her husband John died suddenly of a massive heart attack.

For someone who married at 18 and was never formally employed, that tragedy could have been doubly devastating.

But Marlene rebuilt her life from the ground up, eventually becoming so busy that her children never worried about her financial or emotional well-being – or took her attendance at family functions for granted.

“We had to make appointments with her to be sure she could come to what we were having,” said Karen Briscoe of Joliet, Marlene’s daughter.

Before her husband’s death, Marlene volunteered at the former St. Joseph Catholic School, which her children attended, but that was the extent of Marlene’s work outside the home, Karen said.

“My mother was from the age when women expected to be married forever and have their husbands take care of them,” Karen said.

After John died, Marlene dutifully filled out applications at various businesses in Joliet and then worried no one would hire her because of her age and lack of experience, Karen said. One day, a friend mentioned that Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet had an opening in housekeeping, so Marlene applied there.

Not only did Marlene get the job, she eventually became an occupational therapy assistant and worked in

Sunny Hill’s activity department for 10 years, Karen said, where she thrived.

Marlene loved providing a social life to the residents through Bingo, crafts and trips for ice cream, and even to Karen’s house for lunch.

“This was actually a perfect job for her,” Karen said.

“She had really good people skills, and she really cared about the residents.”

The job became a family affair, with grandchildren helping out at Bingo and Marlene’s son, John Ancel, of Joliet donning a Santa suit during the holidays, Karen said.

Karen Sorbero, administrator at Sunny Hill, said Marlene was open, warm and loving. Marlene returned to Sunny Hill as a volunteer after she retired and then chose to live at Sunny Hill when she needed rehabilitation.

Even as a resident, Sorbero said, Marlene kept a friendly eye out for other patients, making sure they found their way and received services they needed. As a volunteer, Marlene was a Eucharistic minister and the preparer of all the barbecue for the fall bazaar.

“People would wait in line for it,” Sorbero said.

But as much as Marlene adored her job, she didn’t devote all her time to Sunny Hill.

For instance, Karen said, two of Marlene’s friends catered events at St. Joseph Park in Joliet, so Marlene helped them part time. In addition to volunteering at the school, Karen was active at St. Joseph Catholic Church in other ways.

Born in Joliet, a lifelong resident.

He was a graduate of Joliet Central High School Class of 1952. Also a graduate of Juco. Raymond served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956.

Retired from Welding Supply Co. on Cass St. Joliet, in 1998 as a manager after 38 years of service.

Ray enjoyed being with his family and friends, playing Euchre with his friends at Galli’s Tavern, he was an avid bowler and loved golf.

DOROTHY WORST Dorothy (Webbeking) Worst, of Lockport, passed away at home with Hospice Care on December 16, 2015.

A thank you to all the hospice nurses and family that helped in her final days. Special thanks to Marilyn and Hannah.

She was born in 1916 in Waterloo, Iowa, and passed just 10 days short of her 99th birthday. As a child she briefly moved to Bremen, Germany.

She arrived back in the States on March 30, 1927, at Ellis Island, New York, from Bremerhaven, Germany with her parents Carl and Theresa (Plaiser) Webbeking, and siblings Elfrieda, Otto, Karl, Vernon, Albert, and Ewald, on the steamship named Stuttgart and was raised in Waterloo, Iowa.

She graduated Drake University with an R.N. degree in 1936 and a Master’s degree in English and an R.N. degree from Minnesota University when she returned from the army after the war.

She loved her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Dorothy was a great cook and loved to garden and was a Garden Club member in Lockport.

She crocheted and was known for knitting “scrubbies”. She sewed clothes for the kids and others. She took up painting and her art is distributed among her children and friends.

An avid newspaper, book and magazine reader she was very political and could debate on all current events.

And she loved to tell war stories from her years in WWII. Between 1941 and 1946 she served in the U.S. Army as a nurse.

She served as a surgical nurse stateside for 20 months at Ft. Leonard Wood, Lincoln Air Base and Camp Kilmer. Then in February, 1943 she served as an operating room nurse in the 11th Evacuation Hospital, a mobile medical unit, moving throughout North Africa, Italy, Sicily, Southern France and Germany. She was decorated with the American Defense Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, EAME Theatre Ribbon, 1 Silver Battle Star, 2 Bronze Battle Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, 5 Overseas Service Bars and the Victory Medal. Battles and campaigns included: Tunisian; Sicilian; Naples-Foggia; Rome-Arno; Southern France; Rhineland; Central Europe. She was at The Battle of the Bulge, the D-Day Invasion and Anzio. During her service she met King Zaad of Albania, a Spitfire pilot for the British Air Force; met Pope Pius 12; met Josephine Baker; had a dinner date with Douglas Fairbanks Jr.; flew a Cargo plane; earned the nickname “Moonbeam”; and, shot a 50 caliber machine gun on a Swedish ship. She left the service as a LT 1st Class on February 21, 1946.

time in the service. She later served as a VFW Post Adjutant in Lockport.

After her graduation from Minnesota University she became a home health care nurse until 1949. She married William Worst in 1948. Bill passed away in September, 2000.

Starting in 1956 and through 1981 she worked at Silver Cross Hospital as an R.N.; I.C.U. Director; Coronary Clinic Specialist; taught in the S.C.H. School of Nursing; Fire and Disaster Safety Coordinator; EKG Instructor; CPR Instructor; and House Supervisor.

She volunteered in the Hospital Medical Library. She was an Encore Shop president and volunteer and was on the Advisory Board at S.C.H. Dorothy was a longtime member of the King’s Daughters, the founding organization of Silver Cross Hospital. She also served as President of the American Heart Association of Illinois. Dorothy was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lockport.

She was featured in Lockport’s History Scavenger Hunt this past summer and was the Lockport Memorial Day Parade’s Grand Marshall.

She had style, enjoyed life to the fullest and was happiest when helping others.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Vernon, Karl, Ewald, Otto; and sister, Elfrieda.

Her brother Albert survives with his wife, Elaine in Waterloo, Iowa. Also surviving are her and Bill’s children, Sally (Chris) Birkbeck, Cindy (Skip) Lanham, Sandy (Gilbert) Mitchell, and Marc Worst; four grandchildren, Heather, Jesse, Michelle, and Sarah; many great-grandchildren.

Attorneys get $1.8M of Chicago police shooting settlement

CHICAGO – A published report says attorneys received $1.8 million of a $5 million settlement they negotiated with the city of Chicago on behalf of the family of a black teenager shot to death by a white police officer.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that’s higher than the 33 percent typically earned by lawyers in such cases.

Lawyers Jeffrey Neslund and Michael Robbins first demanded $16 million from the city – $1

million for each shot fired by officer Jason Van Dyke into 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder in the 2014 shooting, which was captured on video.

The settlement, approved by a judge, gives McDonald’s mother and sister shares in monthly payments. Robbins has defended his legal fees saying the amount “isn’t necessarily higher than usual.”

“You create the special funds to serve special purposes, and once you begin saying, ‘Open, Sesame’ – we can just take whatever we like – that’s not a good way to run things in part because it raises expectations that you have resources that you don’t have

Authorities said the Sunday morning shooting involved a 52-year-old man and a 47-yearold woman who is an officer.

It’s not clear how the two are related. The wounded man is not an officer.

He was taken to a hospital in good condition and remains in custody. Police said charges might be filed related to what they are calling a domestic incident.

The city’s Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting because it involves an officer.

“That’s a significant amount of money that would be tempting for anybody looking at a budget problem,” he said.

That data was released this past week by the Illinois State Board of Education. It shows 48.7 percent of graduates who enrolled in the community college system needed remedial instruction to prepare them for entry-level college coursework.

The highest remediation rate was in math, with about 41 percent needing additional preparation in the subject.

For the first time, that information is being reported with Illinois Report Card data.

State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith said that information, along with the test known as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, will help educators address the college readiness of their students.

SPRINGFIELD – Half a year into its deepening budget crisis, the state of Illinois is sitting on at least $4 billion in cash.

An Associated Press analysis of state records finds the money in 531 separate accounts set up for special – and specific – purposes, but precedent shows that lawmakers and governors in less anxious times have dipped into those accounts to pay regular state expenses and stave off financial distress.

Two weeks ago, Democratic lawmakers agreed with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on tapping a total of $3 billion from 112 of the special state funds – albeit to finance those funds’ intended purposes. The short-term spending plan sent more than $1 billion owed to cities and counties in tax revenue from income, fuel, gambling and more, as well as providing $400 million to keep state agencies operating and paying other bills.

Debate on the plan resurrected the often-pejorative term “fund sweeps” among Capitol chatter. It’s a practice of taking money for one purpose to pay for something else which gained notoriety during the tenure of former

Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who took office in 2003 amid budget woes that continue to linger.

As recently as March, Democrats and Rauner agreed on $1.3 billion in sweeps to fill a hole in last fiscal year’s budget that opened when Rauner insisted that a temporary income-tax hike be rolled back as planned. It was the largest of such “sweeps” conducted in Illinois since 2003.

The special funds cover varied, sometimes obscure, areas of interest. As of Dec. 15, the date of the state comptroller’s data the AP analyzed, there was $29 million in various “whistleblower” accounts raised from citizen lawsuits over bureaucratic skullduggery. There also was $205 million in a fund to complement regular state school spending, $3.6 million in rail-freight carrier loan repayments, a “Healthy Smiles” fund of $205,000 to promote oral health and $12 million to assist cities in razing abandoned structures.

No one has suggested sweeps as a means of breaking the continuing logjam Rauner and lawmakers have over a spending plan that should have taken effect July 1.

BOZEMAN, Mont. – An avalanche in southern Montana buried three snowmobilers from North Dakota, killing a 33-yearold man.

The Park County Sheriff’s Office said two of the snowmobilers were able to dig themselves out Saturday from the slide north of Cooke City on the Montana-Wyoming line. The victim and his companions have not been identified.

Undersheriff Clay Herbst said five people were riding snowmobiles when one of the riders got stuck. That started an avalanche, which buried the three riders.

Authorities said all riders were experienced, and had avalanche beacons, shovels and backpacks with inflatable airbags. Authorities did not say if the airbags were deployed.

Fake bomb sparks emergency landing of Air France flight

By TOM ODULA and LORI HINNANT The Associated Press NAIROBI, Kenya – A fake explosive rigged with cardboard, sheets of paper and a household timer forced an Air France flight into an emergency landing in Kenya on Sunday, sending hundreds of passengers down emergency slides in what the airline’s CEO said was the fourth bomb hoax against the airline in recent weeks.

The homemade apparatus was discovered around midnight hidden in a lavatory cabinet behind a mirror where it was apparently placed during the approximately 11-hour flight to Paris from the island of Mauritius, said the airline’s CEO, Frederic Gagey.

He said the airline has had heightened security checks around the world since the Nov. 13 attacks that left 130 people dead in Paris.

“It was an ensemble of cardboard, papers and something that resembled a kitchen timer. Nothing that presented a danger to the plane,

to the passengers or to the crew,” Gagey told a news conference in Paris. He said it contained no explosives.

With France in a state of emergency since the Paris attacks and the United States on high alert since the attack in San Bernardino, California, that left 14 dead, hoaxes present a particular conundrum for security officials, who must choose between feeding mass fear and keeping the public in potential danger.

On Tuesday, the two biggest school systems in the U.S. – New York City and Los Angeles – received threats of a large-scale jihadi attack. L.A. reacted by shutting down the entire district, while New York dismissed the warning as an amateurish hoax and held classes.

Air France has been the target of three prior hoaxes, all in the United States, Gagey said. The fourth came on board the flight from Mauritius, a popular winter vacation spot for French tourists.

requested an emergency landing early Sunday at Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa.

Gagey congratulated the crew for their cool-headed reaction to divert the plane to Moi International Airport.

A safety check was carried out in the bathroom before the flight, he said, indicating the device was placed in the cabinet while the plane was in the air. He denied any security failure in the flight, saying that passengers are checked and sometimes double-checked on flights.

Six passengers were being questioned, including the person who informed the crew about the device, said a Kenyan police official who is part of the investigation and who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press.

Passengers praised the cool-headed response of the flight crew.

“The plane just went down slowly, slowly, slowly, so we just realized probably something was wrong,” said Benoit Lucchini, who was headed home to Paris on the flight.

He has done all of them simultaneously.” Like many of those who knew the Paris attackers, Zaid spoke to the AP on condition he only be identified by his first name to avoid police attention.

BRUSSELS – Brahim Abdeslam seemed no different from his peers in Molenbeek, one of Belgium’s poorest districts, where drug use is rife and many of the young men are unemployed. One November evening, he passed the time smoking pot in a parked car with two of his friends.

But the next day, Abdeslam drove to Paris, and on Nov. 13 he blew himself up outside a cafe on Boulevard Voltaire, part of the wave of attacks claimed by the Islamic State group that killed 130 people.

The Molenbeek district of Brussels was home to a core number of the participants in the Paris attacks: its reported architect, Abdelhamid Abaood; Abdeslam; his brother, Salah, who escaped and remains at large; and three others. Another suicide bomber in the attacks, Bilal Hadfi, hailed from a similar district in the Belgian capital. Moreover, those involved in at least

two previous attacks – the foiled shooting on a French train and an attack on the Jewish Museum in Belgium that killed four – had links to Molenbeek.

Home to generations of immigrants and Belgians of North African descent, Molenbeek feels like a dead end for many of its youth, residents say. With few opportunities, they feel neglected by authorities and rejected by the rest of Belgian society – giving an opening for radicals to seek recruits.

“We are now well into the fourth generation of migrants,” said Sheikh Mohammed Tojgani, the imam of Molenbeek’s main mosque, alKhalil. “Now even children realize one way or another that they are marginalized and that they are encountering racism.

And when older ones look for work, they are not given many opportunities.”

Bolingbrook’s Flores credits many for his on-field success

BOLINGBROOK – Although he received some impressive accolades during his soccer career at Bolingbrook, Luis Flores wasn’t really concerned about individual honors.

All the senior forward really hoped for this season was that he and some of his longtime friends would have an enjoyable final year in the Raiders program.

In his mind, the recognition he received belonged not only to his teammates, but also to his mother, Patricia, who has sacrificed greatly as a single parent so her only child could have the best opportunities to excel at the sport.

Flores and his teammates helped coach Jamie Clemmons’ program to an 18-5-3 season, which set a school record for most wins. The Raiders shared the SouthWest Suburban Blue title and beat Metea Valley, 1-0, in the regional final to win their first regional since 1992 and become the first area team to win a regional in a seeded Naperville Sectional.

He scored 19 goals and had 11 assists this season to give him 49 goals and 29 assists for his three-year career. Flores picked up All-Midwest, all-state and all-conference honors for the second year in a row. And after sharing The Herald-News Player of the Year award with Lincoln-Way Central’s Tyler Massa last year, the Raider standout gets it all to himself this season.

“I’m really humbled and feel blessed to have been a part of this program,” Flores said. “It obviously was such an amazing experience to be successful and to share that with kids that I grew up with. All I wanted from my last year was for everyone to have fun, and my teammates did an extremely good job to make that happen.

“All of the accolades are great, and I’m happy to make some history, but winning the regional was what I really wanted. I told coach that I was going

“The thing that I’m going to miss about playing here is the group of guys that I grew up with,” Bolingbrook’s Luis Flores said. “We’ve played together and been successful together, which has really been fun. having to face a defense that set a program record for shutouts and fewest goals allowed each day in practice.

“This season, I didn’t really care who scored goals – I just wanted to win games; that was obviously the most important thing,” Flores said. “Even if I didn’t score or get an assist in a game, I knew that my teammates could pull through if I wasn’t playing well or was hurt. That was the good thing about our team – anyone could score and anyone could change a game.

“Basically, I’m just focused on becoming a better athlete and getting an education so that I can become a better person in order to get ready for the real world. Right now, the best fit for college is something that works for me and my mom. It doesn’t really matter where I play.”

Clemmons is pleased he had the opportunity to coach a player such as Flores.

“He’s our first two-time All-Midwest and All-Stater, so he’ll be hard to replace,” Clemmons said. “He had 40 percent of our goals over the last two seasons; and in about 90 percent of the games that he scored, we won. So it was pretty much how he went was how we went.

“It was nice to have Luis and this group be the ones that finally won that regional title.

These guys worked hard over the last two years. Last year’s seniors finally got us to where we knew that we were as good as those teams. When it came to winning conference and in the playoffs, Luis was hungry for it, and he really wanted to get the job done.

“He was fun to watch with some of the things that he could do with the ball. On some of the goals he got, you’d just shake your head and ask, ‘Did he just score like that?’

The biggest thing that I’ll miss with Luis is seeing some of those unbelievable moments.”

They supported me and helped put in positions where I could score and win accolades, as well. I may have won this award, but they’re the reason that I did.”

Flores especially appreciates everything his mother has done for him to get this far.

“As a single parent, it’s been up to her to pay all of the fees and travel to be on a club,” Flores said. “It’s been a blessing to have her support me since some kids don’t have that support at home. As a young kid, she’d support me by working more in order to get extra money to travel. And she would miss work sometimes to go to tournaments with me.

“People know how hard she works, so they tell me, not to take her for granted. They say, ‘Every time you step on the field, just know that you’re playing for her and for a better future.’ One game I didn’t play well because she was sick, and that’s all I could think of.

All of the success that I’ve had is pretty much due to her because she’s the one that’s supported me.”

We had a mindset, and Coach Clemmons made the best lineup that we could have and put us in a position to win. “The thing that I’m going to miss about playing here is the group of guys that I grew up with. We’ve played together and been successful together, which has really been fun.

Winning our first regional title in 20-some years with the guys that I grew up with was unbelievable.

“Pretty much all of the kids that I grew up with also played club when we were little. Most of us went to different middle schools, but in high school we all came back together, so that was really cool. Whether it was the bus rides or practice, we had a good time. We wanted to play hard, but also wanted to have fun and enjoy it since it was my senior year and most of the other guys were also seniors.”

While Flores was the Raiders’ main scoring threat, they had plenty of other options.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Graham Gano’s 43yard field goal as time expired kept Carolina perfect this season with a wild 3835 victory Sunday over the New York Giants.

Cam Newton threw for five touchdowns in building a 28-point lead before New York stormed back to tie it with 1:46 remaining. The rally tied the NFL record set

by San Francisco against New Orleans in 1980. The big difference: The 49ers won their game; the Giants lost.

Newton led the Panthers (14-0) to their 18th straight regular-season victory. He has thrown for 19 touchdowns in the past five games and a career-best 33 in this so-far special season.

The Giants (6-8) fell one game behind Washington in the NFC East.

STEELERS 34, BRONCOS 27:

In Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger passed for 380 yards and three touchdowns as the Steelers rallied.

Antonio Brown caught 16 passes for 189 yards and two scores as Pittsburgh (9-5) moved into the AFC’s second wild-card spot by dominating the NFL’s best defense after spotting the Broncos (10-4) a 17-point lead.

SEAHAWKS 30, BROWNS 13:

At Seattle, Russell Wilson continued his record pace by throwing three touchdown passes, two to Doug Baldwin, and the Seahawks clinched a playoff spot for the fourth straight season.

Seattle (9-5) won its fifth straight and, thanks to losses this week by Tampa Bay and the New York Giants, wrapped up a postseason berth.

Johnny Manziel threw a 7-yard TD to Gary Barnidge on the first drive for the Browns (3-11).

BENGALS 24, 49ERS 14: At Santa Clara, California, Jeremy Hill ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns to back AJ McCarron’s first career start, and the Bengals (11-3) clinched a fifth straight postseason berth, As Andy Dalton watched from the sideline with a

large cast over his broken right thumb, McCarron threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Kroft just before halftime as the Bengals forced three second-quarter turnovers by San Francisco (4-10) to take command.

CHARGERS 30, DOLPHINS 14:

In San Diego, Danny Woodhead had his first career four-touchdown game and Philip Rivers recovered a fumble on a play that began with him throwing an interception in what might have been the final NFL game in San Diego.

Woodhead caught TD passes of 20, 9 and 9 yards, and scored on a 2-yard run for the Chargers (4-10), who failed to score a touchdown in each of their previous two home games. Miami (5-9) lost for the fourth time in five games.

It all could be over after 55 seasons if NFL owners allow Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos to move to an industrial suburb of Los Angeles and build a stadium with the rival Oakland Raiders.

PACKERS 30, RAIDERS 20: At Oakland, California, Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown pass and Damarious Randall returned an interception for another score to help Green Bay. Green Bay (10-4) clinched a spot in the postseason in the first quarter when the New York Giants lost to Carolina. But the Packers still have their eyes set on a division title and remain one game ahead of Minnesota in the NFC North.

Derek Carr threw two early interceptions to put Oakland (6-8) in a hole but then had a pair of touchdown passes to Amari Cooper.

REDSKINS 35, BILLS 25: In Landover, Maryland, Kirk Cousins equaled his career high with four touchdown passes and ran 13 yards for another score, helping Washington win consecutive games for the first time in more than a year and stay atop the NFC East.

While the Redskins (77) moved closer to a playoff berth, the Bills (6-8) are now assured of missing the postseason for the 16th year in a row, the NFL’s longest active

drought.

CHIEFS 34, RAVENS 14: At Baltimore, Kansas City capitalized on a variety of miscues by Baltimore, extended its winning streak to eight games and remain in the thick of the playoff picture.

With the win, the Chiefs (9-5) became the first NFL team to follow a five-game slide with eight successive wins in the same season.

Baltimore (4-10) is 2-5 at home – the first time in its 20-year history the team has lost five home games.

TEXANS 16, COLTS 10: At Indianapolis, Brandon Weeden replaced injured quarterback T.J. Yates late in the first half and threw a go-ahead 8-yard TD pass to Jaelen Strong with 10:36 to play as Houston won at Indianapolis for the first time in 14 tries.

The Texans (7-7) took sole possession of the AFC South lead by snapping a two-game losing streak.

The Colts (6-8) have lost three straight and need help to make the playoffs.

PATRIOTS 33, TITANS 16:

At Foxborough, Massachusetts, Tom Brady threw for two touchdowns to help New England (11-2) hold onto the top spot in the AFC in a game that saw the Titans’ (3-10) quarterback, Marcus Mariota, knocked out of the game with a knee injury in the first half.

The 2014 Heisman Trophy winner and the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, Mariota left and did not return after being sacked to end consecutive second-quarter drives.

FALCONS 23, JAGUARS 17: At Jacksonville, Florida, Julio Jones scored for the first time in seven weeks, and Atlanta ended a six-game losing streak.

Jones finished with nine receptions for 118 yards and set the franchise record for catches in a season. He has 118, breaking teammate Roddy White’s mark of 115 set in 2010.

The Falcons (7-7) had lost six straight.

The Jaguars (5-9) lost ground in the muddled AFC South and were all but eliminated in the division race.

to defeat Wayne State SUBMITTED REPORTS DETROIT – If the No. 7 Lewis women’s basketball team was thinking about the upcoming Christmas break, they didn’t play like it Sunday in a nonconference contest at Wayne State.

The Flyers scored the first 17 points on their way to a 90-76 win over the Warriors.

Lewis led, 47-27, at halftime, with senior Mariyah Brawner-Henley scoring 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Brawner-Henley tied a career-high with 31 points. She shot 12 of 18 from the floor with a 3-pointer and 11 rebounds. Brawner-Henley now has 1,034 career rebounds and is 10 shy of setting a new Lewis school record.

“Mariyah was outstanding,” Lewis coach Kristen Gillespie said. “I loved her toughness today.”

Freshman Jessica Kelliher added 19 points, making 8 of 11 shots. They were two of Lewis’ four players in double-digits.

Redshirt freshman Kayla Brewer and junior Alyssa Siwek each added 11 points. Siwek totaled a career-high nine assists.

The Flyers outshot the Warriors, 61.8 percent to 42.6 percent.

Wayne State never held a lead in the game, with Lewis’ largest lead coming in the fourth quarter at 25 points.

Lewis’ best assist of the day came before the game. The team delivered gifts and donations to a Detroit household through an adopt-a-family program.

“The players donated their own money, wrapped the gifts and delivered them this morning,” Gillespie said. “I’m very proud of them.”

Lewis improved to 10-1, and Wayne State fell to 5-4. The Flyers take an extended break before returning to the court Dec. 30 against Cumberland in a 5:30 p.m. start at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush half and the score 10-7, the Vikings were third-and-7 at the Bears’ 17. They were going to score three or seven, or maybe even turn the ball over.

With three timeouts in his pocket, Fox had a chance to save the Bears a full minute to answer. He chose to use none of them; and when the Bears got the ball back with 26 seconds left after Minnesota made the score 17-7, they had no time even to try to add a field goal to narrow the gap.

It’s a small point in a game that exposed much bigger issues with this Bears team, but exactly what value did those timeouts have to the Bears in the locker room at halftime?

A much bigger concern right now has to be the relentless march backward of the Bears’ offensive line.

The easy target is Kyle Long – he’s just not the correct choice. Yes, he allowed two more sacks and struggled against mediocre competition, but Long will be fine.

The problem is we’re at the point in the season where some improvement from Patrick Omameh, Charles Leno Jr. and Hroniss Grasu is required for us to be confident the Bears have answers beyond Long and Matt Slauson going forward, and right now they’re just not there.

Jay Cutler was sacked five times in Minnesota – although one was a ridiculous coverage sack in which Cutler held the ball a full 8½ seconds or longer – and pressured a number of other times.

In a perfect world in which Alshon Jeffery, Kevin White and Eddie Royal are all back and in great health next year, the Bears still will need more help at wide receiver.

If any of those three falter, it becomes another priority on the offseason shopping list.

Minnesota’s running game and backs catching out of the backfield again exposed the Bears’ near total lack of talent at inside linebacker, and the DBs seemed dazed and confused all afternoon long.

There is no making chicken salad out of the mess the Bears made Sunday on the field in Minneapolis.

With a somewhat daunting trip to Tampa to pay a visit to Lovie Smith on Sunday and the Lions in town to close the season after that, this Bears team that was spreading so much sunshine just 3½ weeks ago leaving Green Bay now faces the very real possibility of being no better than last year’s 5-11 disaster.

It is hard to even contemplate right now the level of disappointment that finish would yield.

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com MINNEAPOLIS – Matt Forte had his best rushing average since Week One, finding holes in an undermanned Vikings defense to the tune of 5.9 yards a carry.

However, it came on only eight carries.

The Bears fell behind early again, hurt themselves with penalties and lost their third in a row to fall to 5-9 in a 38-17 beatdown at the hands of the Vikings.

“Any time you get the ball first and manage to fall behind early, it’s tough to play catch up,” Forte said. “In this league, not many people win when they have to play catch up, throwing out the game plan and doing stuff out of desperation.”

No play epitomized the Bears on Sunday, or the team we’ve seen since their win in Green Bay, more than Hroniss Grasu’s holding penalty on the game’s first offensive play. It wiped out a 25-yard Forte run that would have put the Bears at the Vikings’ 15-yard line.

“It was unfortunate. I was thinking, ‘What a way to start the game with an explosive run,’ ” Forte said. “We would have been close to the red zone. With the kickoff return, we had a great start, but the penalty was a momentum killer.”

The Bears were called for three holding penalties – two were declined – upping their league-leading total to 34 on the season.

John Fox lamented the pass-first team the Bears became because of the deficit – “We fell behind and had to throw it a little more than in prior games to stay in the game” – and it kept the offense from doing what it’s supposed to do best.

“It’s frustrating, but we don’t let it get to us,” he said.

“As you can see, we went out there and put a few drives together. At the end, we were still trying to go down there and score, and that’s the mentality that we have, but we ran out of time.

“It kills your drives and momentum. These last three or four weeks we’ve had way too many [penalties]. It’s taking a toll on us, you can tell.

We’ll have a big drive or play going and then it gets called back. If we negate that, it’s a whole different ballgame.”

It could take a bigger toll on Forte from a personal standpoint, as he possibly is playing his final games in a Bears uniform.

He had six catches for 57 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter to go along with his 47 rushing yards, and maintains he isn’t thinking about what is around the corner. Even with playoffs out of the question for the fifth season in a row, Forte listens to what he learned as a kid to keep going.

“I just go out there and play my hardest,” he said.

“As I was growing up, my father always told me to play every down like it’s my last, so that’s how I play.”

This was the Bears game everyone feared.

The 38-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings was a complete breakdown in every phase of the game and at every level.

You want a silver lining?

Running backs Matt Forte and Jeremy Langford weren’t bad; Willie Young continued to grow into the Bears’ new 3-4 defense, irrespective of whether you want to call him an outside linebacker or defensive end; and the Bears may have something in the kick return game in Deonte Thompson.

That’s it.

How’s that for slim pickings from 60 minutes of NFL action on a Sunday afternoon?

Let’s start with the coaching staff. At this point, it’s hard to know how much legitimate NFL talent the Bears actually have; but the fact they’ve taken a significant steps backward in each of their last three games – at the point in the season where you hope to be measuring improvement rather than regression – is a significant concern.

Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis, young Jeremy Langford and Zach Miller were the only players on the field who were better than they were opening day of the season.

Are the Bears just that bad a football team, or is the coaching lacking, too?

The other coaching issue that just can’t be ignored is John Fox’s seeming nonexistent feel for clock management.

Toews scores in overtime as Blackhawks hold off Sharks

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jonathan Toews scored at 2:21 of overtime to give the surging Blackhawks a 4-3 victory Sunday night over the San Jose Sharks.

Toews skated in with Patrick Kane for a 2-on-1 and tipped home a nice pass for his 11th goal.

Kane scored his 21st in the first period to help the Hawks win for the second straight day and seventh time in nine games overall. The star forward has two goals and two assists in three games since his 26-game point streak ended last Tuesday against Colorado.

Joonas Donskoi had a goal and an assist for San Jose, which has dropped eight of 10. Tommy Wingels, a native of nearby Evanston, and Joe Pavelski also scored.

San Jose grabbed a 3-2 lead on Pavelski’s 16th goal at 14:45

of the second. Paul Martin’s shot was tipped by Joe Thornton and got past Hawks center Dennis Rasmussen before it got to Pavelski in front of the net.

The Hawks killed off two penalties in the third before Andrew Shaw made a move to set up his sixth of the season.

The forward drove to the net and stayed with the puck when Martin Jones tried to poke it away, and then beat the goalie into the right side of the net for the tying score at 6:51.

San Jose almost jumped in front again, but Corey Crawford made a glove save on a shot by Donskoi with 8:57 remaining in the third. Crawford finished with 33 stops, and Artem Anisimov also scored for the Hawks.

The Hawks played without Marian Hossa after the veteran winger was a surprise scratch with an upper-body injury.

Hossa, who turns 37 on Jan. 12, played 23 shifts and 16:50 in a

3-2 shootout win Saturday at Buffalo, including two shifts in overtime.

The Sharks were without Joel Ward for the first time this season. The forward was scratched with an unspecified injury after he was on the receiving end of a boarding penalty by Ottawa defenseman Mark Borowiecki in the final seconds of the Sharks’ 4-2 loss Friday night.

While each team was short-handed, neither side had any trouble scoring early on.

There were four goals in the first 15:39. Anisimov scored his 12th after a bad turnover

by Martin, but Donskoi responded with a nifty move on a breakaway and Wingels scored on a power play for his third of the season, giving the Sharks a 2-1 lead with 6:18 left in the period.

Kane then tied it with a rebound score. He has at least one point in 32 of the Hawks’ 35 games.

You have probably heard this Oscar Wilde observation: “Bigamy is having one wife too many. Monogamy is the same.”

It is not often that having two is seen as less desirable than one, but our laws frown on having two wives simultaneously. At the bridge table, though, if you have two chances to make your contract, that is much better than having only one – assuming you can time the play to try both.

In this example deal, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads the spade king and continues with the spade queen?

North’s two-spade cue-bid was an artificial game-force. South was tempted to continue with three clubs, but with only a doubleton there, he decided to show his spade stopper.

Remember, when the opponents have bid only one suit, a cue-bid asks for a stopper. (If South had bid three clubs, North would probably have cue-bid spades again to try to get into three no-trump.)

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, one heart, three diamonds and three clubs. At first glance, it looks obvious to assume clubs will run. But if at trick three declarer cashes his club ace, he can no longer make the contract.

South needs to notice that nine winners can be accrued if the diamonds are worth four tricks. So, before touching clubs, declarer should play a diamond to dummy’s queen and cash the diamond king.

Here, the jack drops, so South takes the diamond 10, returns to his hand with a club, cashes the diamond ace, then tries to run the clubs for overtricks.

check for an oral yeast infection (thrush) and for problems that affect the salivary glands themselves, such as Sjogren’s syndrome.

Even if you can’t correct the underlying cause of your dry mouth, you can do things to make your mouth less dry.

Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless candy to stimulate the flow of saliva. Avoid dry or very spicy foods. Drink plenty of water, but steer clear of alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, as they tend to reduce saliva. And don’t forget regular dental care: Untreated disease of the gums can cause dry mouth.

Finally, try using artificial saliva products. These are available over-thecounter as sprays, swabs and solutions. Though not identical to natural saliva, artificial saliva can help moisten the tissues in your mouth and throat.

I mentioned once before in this column a memorable patient with a dry mouth. She was an 84-yearold woman whose daughter reported that she had started sucking on apricot pits all the time, something she had never done before.

I figured out that it was because her mouth was very dry, and sucking on apricot pits helped produce saliva.

But why was her mouth so dry? It wasn’t for the usual reasons that I’ve just mentioned. It was because she had developed diabetes. Her sugar level was so high, and she was so dehydrated, that I immediately hospitalized her. She almost died, but recovered and lived to be 99 years 4 months old.

Dear Dr. K: My mouth and throat are always very dry. As a result, I am constantly sipping water.

It’s annoying and uncomfortable. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do?

Dear Reader: Dry mouth is not as common as dry eyes (something I have), but it’s not uncommon.

The medical term for dry mouth is xerostomia (pronounced ZE-roSTOME-ee-uh), but I’ll avoid doctor-speak and call it dry mouth. Usually, dry mouth is mild enough to be an annoyance, as it is with you. However, severe cases can cause complications.

Dry mouth can rob you of your sense of taste and can make chewing slow and swallowing difficult. Also, since saliva is important for dental health, dry mouth can contribute to tooth decay and periodontal disease.

The first step in dealing with dry mouth is to be sure you’re well-hydrated, as you are. At night, do you breathe dry air through your mouth because your nose is congested? If so, nasal decongestants may help restore nose breathing.

Also, a bedroom humidifier can add moisture to the air you breathe.

Quite a number of medications can cause dry mouth as a side effect.

That’s particularly true of medicines that have what’s called “anticholinergic” effects, which cut the production of saliva.

Commonly used medicines with such effects include antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants, antispasmodics, and certain drugs used for Parkinson’s disease, overactive bladder and chronic bronchitis.

Take an inventory of your medications. If you round up a few suspects, discuss them with your doctor.
