JOLIET – The city deficit in 2015 is not so bad after all.

It may even turn into a surplus when the year is over.

The 2015 budget forecast a nearly $8.7 million deficit in the General Fund, which covers most basic city services.

City officials planned to borrow from reserve funds to cover that deficit.

But Councilman John Gerl said the city is currently running a $5 million surplus without even counting millions of dollars coming in since the state has released casino tax dollars due to Joliet since June.

Gerl made his comments at Tuesday’s City Council meeting after a meeting of the council’s Finance Committee in which city officials went over the latest financial reports.

Bills coming in at the end of the year will still have an impact on the city’s balance sheet.

which have just begun negotiating contracts. And, Hock has said he has no money to replace patrol cars or cover other capital expenses.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said he believes the city is creating an accurate budget for next year.

“We’ve always said we wanted to budget accurately,” O’Dekirk said Tuesday.

“There’s no reason to believe that the numbers we’re looking at now are not realistic and are inflated numbers.”

Finance Director James Ghedotte agreed with Gerl’s analysis that the city’s projected deficit for 2015 will likely disappear by year’s end.

“We will not be at the $8 million,” Ghedotte said. “It does look like we’ll be at break-even or even add a little to the fund balance.”

Gerl said given the size of the city’s budget, an $8.5 million difference in the end-ofthe-year balance is understandable.

“A 5 percent swing here or there is a $10 million difference,” he said.

The $8.7 million deficit was projected in the city’s General Fund, which included 2015 budgeted expenditures of $173 million.

Mudron criticizes fellow councilman’s ‘bully’ tactics

By BOB OKON bokon@shawemedia.com JOLIET – Joliet City Councilman Pat Mudron described a fellow councilman as using “bully” tactics in a Monday night confrontation with the general manager of the Rialto Square Theatre.

Mudron, who serves as the council liaison to the Rialto board, made his comments Wednesday at a Rialto board meeting in which general manager Randy Green was commended for his composure during the face-off with Councilman Larry Hug. “I do believe his tactics are to bully,” Mudron said of Hug. Mudron, who at the council meeting told Hug he was making a “personal attack”

But both Gerl and the city’s finance director said they expect Joliet to end the year close to breaking even.

“It’s hard to predict,” Gerl said. “But based on the numbers I’m seeing here, I don’t see us coming close to an $8.5 million deficit. We might even see a slight surplus.”

The 2016 budget had included a property tax increase and a hike in the real estate transfer tax while still borrowing from reserve funds. Both taxes have been rejected by the council, leaving City Manager Jim Hock saying the city may have to borrow $7 million from savings to balance the budget in 2016.

The proposed budget, which was released Nov. 30, estimates the city will end 2015 with a deficit of $4.6 million, down from the original forecast but not down to zero.

Next year’s proposed budget does not include money for pay raises for the city unions,

Hug was animated through most of the discussion and at one point said he was tired of “the polished turd,” a phrase Hug later said was meant to refer to the Rialto’s business model and

Rialto board Chairman Dan Vera at the Rialto board meeting initiated the discussion about what happened Monday, saying Green had handled himself well.

“Randy, nice job at the microphone – staying professional,” Vera said.

Other board members also commended Green.

“I want to personally thank Randy for his professionalism and his composure during that debacle,” said board member David Thornton, who was at the Monday meeting.

Rialto patron Tim Shanahan of Manhattan, also at the Monday meeting, described the Hug-Green encounter as “embarrassing for everyone who was there.”

Tips to reduce waste in unique ways

Everyday items you could use to wrap a gift: newspaper, torn cloth from an old Oxford shirt, an old Christmas card cut in half, an ornament with a pruned snippet of an evergreen shrub or tree. JOLIET – A gift wrapped in store-bought wrapping paper can be thoughtful.

But the wrapping often goes into the trash, making the gift-giving process a harmful one for the environment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. Wrapping paper and packaging is a big part of that.

Wrapping alternatives

Riffice founded Prairie Godmothers, a company aimed at educating and inspiring people through presentations to embrace nature and gardening. She presented a program called “It’s a wrap” as part of the Plainfield library and village government’s Green Village series.

Fabric, newspapers and craft paper are just a few materials people can use to wrap gifts in a cheap and efficient way, Riffice said.

Along with reduced cost and waste potential, Riffice said the focus was on using materials that can be recycled easily or composted.

“Every bit of what we wrap can be used for either reuse, or shredded and tossed into a compost pile,” she said.

One gift Riffice showed was wrapped with an old map of California. Riffice had placed hearts on two cities, and it was wrapped with a reusable craft ribbon.

“People don’t use maps anymore, but things like old National Geographic magazines have maps,” she said. “I do an awful lot of roaming through resale shops. Instead of wrapping paper, I buy things I can use again and again.”

One technique that can save the amount of wrapping used on a gift is to only wrap the covers of gifts that come in boxes.

“I call it a soap opera wrap,” Riffice said. “Less material can go in the composter, and it can be reused.”

But while wrapping paper alternatives can help limit holiday waste, they may not have the decorative elements some wrapping papers do.

Library board OKs referendum questions

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Public Library Director Julie Milavec whistled a sigh of relief right after the district board unanimously voted to ask the public for additional funds for reconstruction of the library.

Almost a year full of public meetings, design phases, evaluation of library needs and legwork by library staff and its board will culminate in two referendum questions on the March 15 election ballot.

“I believe this was as carefully considered as possible with as much expertise as possible,” library board member Patricia Miller said, noting that it was time to make the board’s big vote.

Library staff have, for years, been clamoring for more space through an expansion, new library or reconstructed library.

The first referendum question will ask voters for permission to issue a total bond amount of $39 million. The second question will remove the tax cap for one year, raising the limiting rate and accounting for the funds to operate a larger library.

There were a couple of changes to the design of the west- and south-facing facades of the library design since the board’s last meeting Dec. 4.

That included sprucing up the Illinois Street view of the library.

Five windows to one of the first-floor meeting rooms were added to the west side of the proposed building. Two planter beds also were added near the entrance at the southwest end of the building.

The change also includes expanding the meeting room and fitting it with removable walls.

A book dropoff also could be located in front of the planters.

The changes were made as a result of village feedback to the design of the new library.

Milavec said the board initially thought keeping the western facade inconspicuous would appease residents along Illinois Street. But village officials expressed a desire to open up the Illinois street side

and make it more lively.

Milavec also noted that Village Planner Michael Garrigan clarified previous comments reported in The Herald-News to add that the village’s concerns were to the final design of the new library concept, and that the village was in support of the future library.

At a Plainfield Coffee with the Mayor meeting last week, Garrigan said, “The library has a critical problem [with space] right now. Subject to

residents’ support for the referendum, it would be a wonderful renaissance for downtown.”

The next step for the library in the referendum process is ramping up its informational campaigning.

Milavec said she will be available to answer questions from the public in the library from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 10, 4:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 11, 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 4, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 6, and 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 14.

Fairmont School D-89 resolution opposes highway

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The Fairmont School District 89 Board of Education decided to oppose the plan to build a highway linking Caton Farm and Bruce roads to a new bridge over the Des Plaines River.

At Wednesday’s meeting, board members unanimously adopted the resolution. At the Nov. 18 board meeting, Superintendent Sonya Whitaker read from the resolution that expressed opposition to the

plans.

Board members determined Will County engineers and others involved in the project have failed to give adequate consideration to the safety of the students attending District 89 or the community, Whitaker stated from the resolution at the last meeting.

According to the resolution, the board cannot support the project and oppose it entirely if the concerns summarized in it are not addressed.

Dozens of Fairmont residents have opposed the project

in the past, with some saying it will destroy the community.

DeLinda Herod, Fairmont Community Partnership Group acting president, said at Wednesday’s board meeting that if the board approves of it, her organization would put it together with their own opposing resolution and several other petitions.

The organization would then present them at a January Will County Board meeting, she said.

“We want to let them know on record that we are opposing

the highway,” Herod said.

Tax levy

Board members also approved the 2015 tax levy, which would earmark funds to pay for facility repairs and improvements.

David Holm, interim business manager, said about $3.7 million worth of building repairs are needed over the next five to 10 years, based on a facility assessment report.

The funding for those improvements would come out of a leasing of facilities and

life-safety levies, Holm has said. That funding would not represent a tax increase.

Board member Jeremy Burns asked Holm how he would know how much of the levy would go toward facility improvements.

Holm said if you look at the levy, it is structured as a series of levies – such as education and transportation – and leasing of facilities is one levy.

“That money will go into a fund where it will stay until it is used for those purposes,” he said.

bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – A 28-year-old Bolingbrook man had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, police said.

Arsalan N. Azeem, of the 300 block of Woodcreek Drive, was arrested Tuesday on three counts Arsalan N. of criminal sex- Azeem ual abuse.

Bolingbrook Police Department Lt. Carter Larry said Evanston police contacted the department July 1 with information about criminal acts

taking place in Bolingbrook’s jurisdiction. Azeem met the girl in another town and developed a sexual relationship with her, Larry said.

“At the onset of the relationship he implied that he was significantly younger to his victim,” Larry said. “He brought her to his apartment on multiple occasions.”

According to Will County jail records, the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement will detain Azeem if he is able to post bail.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office reported Azeem spent nine days in jail in May for driving with a suspended license.

Caryn Benson, 38, has been charged with one count of theft and is scheduled to be arraigned in federal court Dec. 22, U.S. Attorney spokesman Joseph Fitzpatrick said.

“She is charged with misappropriating $33,014 from her employer in [one charged incident],” Fitzpatrick said.

The charging document does not identify the employer, but Field Museum spokesman Ray DeThorne confirmed Wednesday that Benson is a former employee. Benson was terminated in April 2014 after stealing $903,000 over seven years, he said.

“She would give [membership] cards and other items when people would sign up for memberships but would just pocket the cash and not enter the transaction,” DeThorne said.

JOLIET – A fingerprint expert will get a $1,500 retainer to start tests wanted by a man acting as his own attorney for his second murder trial.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Knick said Wednesday that tests showed a bloody print found on the storm door of Joseph N. Salamie’s house was left

by Salamie, but defendant Martin Elvis G o m e z , 3 1 , Martin Elvis believes oth- Gomez erwise. At a status hearing Wednesday before Judge Carmen Goodman, Knick said the State’s Attorney’s Office will arrange to ship the evidence to Matthew Marvin, a latent print specialist from Mississippi.

In August, Goodman agreed Gomez could use up to $5,000 in funds from the Will County Public Defender’s Office to have prints analyzed for a second time.

The body of Salamie, 58, was found May 10, 2007, near a fence on his 10-acre farm on South Harlem Avenue, just north of Peotone Road, in Peotone Township. Gomez, who had once lived in a trailer on the farm, allegedly stabbed his former landlord 111 times, slit his throat and stole $1,200.

Salamie owned Sight and Sound Novelty Shop in Westmont and raised racehorses.

After a 2011 trial, Gomez was convicted of Salamie’s murder and sentenced to 55 years in prison. He received a separate 19-year prison sentence for trying to hire a gang member to kill an ex-girlfriend who testified against him.

But an appellate court found while Judge Richard

Schoenstedt warned Gomez about the risks of representing himself, he did not give required admonishments, and ordered a new trial in the murder case.

During his first trial, Gomez used $5,000 in public funds to hire an entomologist to establish the time of Salamie’s death based on insect activity. The expert later testified as a witness for the prosecution. Earlier this year, Gomez sought funds to hire an expert to refute cellphone records that showed he was near Salamie’s farm the night of the murder, but Goodman denied that request.

Gomez appeared to be in discomfort during Wednesday’s court session and admitted he was ill when the judge asked if he was all right.

“Normally, you’re a little more vocal,” Goodman noted.

Gomez will return to court Feb. 2.

Preliminary tally shows candidate to be kicked off District 3 ballot

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Bolingbrook man running for Will County Board District 3 did not obtain the sufficient number of valid signatures to appear on the March primary ballot, a county election board is expected to rule later this week.

Nearly 40 of the 78 signatures obtained by Sinatra Strong were stricken by a three-person review panel Wednesday.

Strong, who needed at least 59 to get on the March 15 ballot, is one of three candidates who filed to run in District 3.

The others are Elizabeth Rice of Bolingbrook and Donald Moran of Romeoville. If Strong is removed from the ballot, there will be no contest as two candidates are picked in each County Board district.

The objection to Strong’s nomination papers was filed

by Richard L. Gougis III of Romeoville. His objection is being handled by Joliet attorney Joseph Cernugel.

At the end of the hearing, Cernugel tallied the sustained objections.

“If I can do a quick check …” he said, pausing to count his tally aloud, “... If you subtract 38 [stricken signatures] from 78, it appears there’s only 40 left.”

Before the count, Strong maintained all his signatures were valid.

“I’d like to say that all the signatures are legit,” Strong told the board at the start of the hearing, held in Courtroom 313 of the Will County courthouse.

“For those in question, I’d like to speak to those.”

But Strong remained most-

ly quiet during the short proceedings, following along as the board conducted “binder checks” to compare petition signatures with those on voter registrations and to confirm the validity of addresses provided on the petitions.

Strong questioned why he was targeted by Gougis III, who was not present Wednesday.

“I don’t know why the objector is not here. I would have loved to have met him,” Strong told the board.

Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, which is reviewing the tallies, said Wednesday the office could not comment while the matter is under review.

A ruling by the three-member Will County Officers Electoral Board is expected Friday, he said.

Attorney: Will County candidate’s petition signatures will fall short

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Barbara Guerrero, a Democratic candidate for Will County circuit clerk, could very well fall short of the 666 signatures necessary to appear on the March primary ballot, according to the objector’s attorney.

“By our tally, it appears to show she will come up about 46 short,” Joliet attorney Gary Mueller said Wednesday, noting his tally is preliminary and pending review of the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

A ruling by the three-member Will County Officers Electoral Board is expected Friday.

Mueller is representing Derrick E. Barry of Naperville, who filed challenges this month to 514 of the 910 signatures obtained by Guerrero.

Mueller said his client filed objections because he was interested in making sure the petition process was properly followed.

Guerrero said Wednesday

that she believes she was personally targeted because her opponents did not want her on the ballot.

“They were afraid. Because they knew that I would be a threat to them,” said Guerrero, who works as a deputy chief in the Circuit Clerk’s Office.

If Guerrero is kicked off the ballot, Andrea Chasteen and Robert Enright will be the only two Democrats running in the party’s primary.

Chasteen has been endorsed

by Circuit Clerk Pam McGuire, who has decided not to seek a sixth term. Marlene M. Carlson, a Republican, is also running for circuit clerk.

During a seven-hour hearing Tuesday, members of the Officers Electoral Board conducted “binder checks” to compare petition signatures with those on voter registrations and to confirm the validity of addresses provided on

Many signatures were stricken because they were printed, while others were stricken because the signers were not registered voters or addresses did not exist.

“Honestly, like I said, when you go door to door, you’re expecting people to be forward and honest, like you’re being forward with them,” Guerrero said.

Guerrero said the board, in some instances, compared voters’ 2015 signatures with signatures from as far back as the 1970s.

“A lot of the signatures that were kicked out weren’t updated. Any person’s signature can change over the years,” Guerrero said.

Some signatures were those of deceased individuals.

While it was determined that at least one individual died after penning a signature, the person was already deceased in at least one other instance.

“You can have two people in the family with the same name. Who’s to say that wasn’t the case?” Guerrero said.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield East and North high schools will come together during two boys basketball games to raise money for the children of late PNHS teacher Susan Triplett, who was killed Oct. 20.

The high schools have been selling T-shirts, rally towels and purple beaded necklaces to raise money for Triplett’s children. The PEHS Orange Crush and PNHS Crimson Crazies fan sections will wear the special T-shirts during the games between the two schools.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield School District 202 board members approved a $204.8 million tax levy at their meeting Monday.

This year’s levy is down about $1 million from last year because of savings realized by refinancing several bond issues, according to a District 202 news release.

A public hearing on the levy was held before it was approved and no one spoke, said Tom Hernandez, District 202 spokesman.

District officials have been owing less on bond payments over the years, as well as paying less interest on those bonds, Hernandez said.

The levy is 15 percent higher than last year’s tax extension – or property taxes collected from Will and Kendall counties – but district officials expect this year’s extension to

be only about 0.8 percent higher than last year because of the state tax cap law.

The tax cap law limits the amount of new revenue the district can levy each year to either the Consumer Price Index – the average change in prices of goods and services purchased by households – or 5 percent, whichever is less.

The CPI is expected to be 0.8 percent under this year’s levy and when the levy process is complete then district officials will be able to increase local

trict’s final equalized assessed value is set in April.

District officials warn new property values can fluctuate between now and when the final numbers are received.

The economy also is slowly improving.

Hernandez said each year the levy goes up a bit because of district expenses. The budget for this year was up because of raises for teachers and administrators and anticipated raises for support staff, he said.

If something gets reused over and over again, it’s better for the environment.”

Keane said an increase of online gift buying in recent years has led to growth in packaging waste, including plastic bags and bubble wrap.

Recycling the waste can be tricky. Keane said bubble wrap is recyclable, but it can’t be recycled curbside.

Bubble wrap and other plastic bags and film can be recycled at Berkot’s, Jewel-Osco, Target, Walmart and Meijer.

Minooka levy to increase 18 percent

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka residents are likely to see an increase in the village’s portion of property taxes with the unanimous Village Board approval Tuesday night of an 18.1 percent levy increase.

The increase is necessary to carry on the village’s work, Finance Director John Harrington said, and should be considered a long-term investment in the village.

The biggest cost increases are in the corporate and police pension categories. Both are part of the general fund.

The village’s police pension fund currently is funded at 62.35 percent.

Trustee Barry Thompson said even at that rate, the pension fund is not underfunded and the village is where it needs to be.

“We are committed to keeping it funded appropriately,” Thompson said.

Those who fail to pay fines on parking violations in Minooka will soon run the risk of losing their driving privileges.

A new ordinance gives the village authority to seek assistance from the Secretary of State’s Office for registered vehicle owners with 10 or more violations or who are more than 14 days in default of a payment plan with the village.

Up until now the village could only work with the State Treasurer’s Office to recoup fines by taking them out of violators’ income tax refunds. But not everyone files a return or receives a refund, Minooka Chief of Police Justin Meyer said.

“This allows municipalities to seek suspension of driver’s licenses,” Meyer said. “It’s another penalty option for us.”

The levy had been kept at a flatter rate when equalized assessed value dropped significantly, even though the village received less funding at the time.

The village has brought in a lot of new industrial businesses over the past five years, which helps to lessen the impact on residential property taxes, Harrington said.

A home valued at $200,000 would have had $480 in property taxes from the village’s portion in 2015. If all other factors remain the same, that same home would increase to $550 next year, Harrington said.

She attended St. Jude Catholic Church and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #300 and the Croatian Cultural Club. Cheri was a devoted Green Bay Packer fan, enjoyed boating on the Illinois River and traveling with her many friends.

Born: May 1, 1918; in Quincy, IL Died: Dec. 1, 2015; in Joliet, IL Alice Elizabeth (Betty) Hemphill, Nee Watson, 97, entered eternal rest on December 1, 2015, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County in Joliet.

She was most recently a resident of Joshua Arms Senior Residences in Joliet. She was born in Quincy, IL on May 1, 1918, as the first child to Eugene and Grace Watson. In 1919 the family moved to Joliet where, through the ensuing years, Betty became the eldest of three siblings - one sister and two brothers - all now deceased.

She attended Moran Street School, Farragut Junior High, Joliet Township High School and Joliet Junior College.

Besides her parents and siblings, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Clair J. Hemphill, whose life was shockingly and mournfully taken from his wife and children at the early age of 67 by a failed heart.

For those who well knew Clair and Betty, also well knew the team, the partnership and the solid couple they had become, including the reciprocal love, support, pride and encouragement they shared during those great memorable 40 years. Those who knew this could not miss noticing the beaming pride in Clair’s eyes as he absorbed the achievements of the young city lady who accepted a ring he slid onto her finger and devoted the remainder of their lives together on the family farm south of Joliet near Elwood.

Those achievements were many.

During those 40 years she earned a Certificate of Parliamentary Law & Order from the University of Illinois, serving as Parliamentarian of several organizations, and was deeply involved in many others. These included the Home Extension of the University of Illinois where she was Information Director for 11 Illinois counties. As a member of the King’s Daughters and Sons, her involvement included serving as President of the Circle for both the Will County and Illinois. As a member of Eastern Star, she served as Worthy Matron, Grand Lecturer and Grand Representative. Included in her community involvement, Betty was elected to the Advisory Board of Silver Cross Hospital, holding the position of President, and also served on the Board of Trustees. Adding to that, she served as Chairman and treasurer of the Silver Cross Encore Thrift Shop.

In total, she served as a volunteer of the hospital for 60 years. She and Clair were also active members of the Manhattan Methodist Church, including singing in and directing choirs, and serving on the church board as treasurer.

Betty is survived by four children, Lois, married to Jerry Walker of Nicholasville, KY; Gene of Lancaster, PA; Ray married to Lisa of Shorewood, IL; and Ross, married to Joyce of St. Charles, IL. She also has 12 grandchildren and

12 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her loving friend, Bill Futterer.

As per Betty’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded through Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home. A Memorial Service is being planned for 2:00 p.m. December 18, 2015, at Hope Lutheran Church, 305 E. Black Road in Shorewood. Private burial following the service. Fannie was born in Watseka, IL., on May 11, 1931, to Clarence and Margaret Norder. She retired from St. Joseph Medical Center with 25 years of service as a nurse’s aide. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and dedicated her time serving on the church Altar Guild. Fannie spent her entire life putting everyone else’s needs before her own.

She will be remembered for her unwavering faith in God and her love of family and friends will always be cherished.

Champaign approves settlement in police excessive force suit

CHAMPAIGN – City council members have signed off on a $225,000 settlement to a second lawsuit that accuses a Champaign police officer using excessive force.

The council approved the settlement unanimously Tuesday evening amid a demonstration that saw about 150 protesters march from the police station to the city building. Protesters called for the dismissal of Officer Matt Rush and the approval of a civilian police review board.

Rush was accused by Benjamin Mann of using force to the point where he had to be hospitalized.

Police had responded to a call after Mann fought with his live-in girlfriend. Mann said the alleged injuries he suffered from Rush that night kept him from working for five months.

Rush faces separate lawsuits alleging the use of excessive force filed by three plaintiffs: William Brown, Mann and Kisica Seets.

Cleric denies new charges of sexually abusing student

ROLLING MEADOWS – A suburban Chicago Islamic scholar has pleaded not guilty to new charges that he sexually abused a teenage student more than a decade ago.

Mohammad Abdullah Saleem, founder of the Institute of Islamic Education in Elgin, entered the plea Wednesday to charges he sexually abused a student between 2001 and 2003 when she was 14-16.

The Daily Herald in Arlington Heights reported the former

student accuses the 76-yearold Saleem of abusing her 15 to 20 times. Prosecutors say she moved from Illinois in 2003, but came forward several months ago after learning authorities were investigating charges that Saleem abused a 22-year-old female office worker.

Prosecutors weigh severely disabled Illinois man’s death

CENTRALIA – Like most of the severely disabled residents at the Warren G. Murray Developmental Center in southern Illinois, Todd Clementz stuck to a routine: Deaf, blind and requiring constant supervision, he passed his days with meals, therapy and an evening bath.

But in late March, Clementz’s routine was disrupted when a worker at the state institution gave him an unscheduled shower, during which the 46-year-old man choked to death. A jury in a coroner’s inquest last month ruled his death a homicide.

Clinton County State’s Attorney John Hudspeth told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he expects to decide soon whether to file criminal charges. The AP is not naming the former employee of the facility in Centralia. He was initially placed on administrative leave but later was fired for seeking work at another state agency during an internal investigation, according to Veronica Vera, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Human Services, which oversees the developmental center.

Vera said Clementz’s death led to increased staff training and supervision, among other changes, including the replacement of suctioning machines designed to stop patients from choking.

Baby sitter convicted of involuntary manslaughter

SPRINGFIELD – A jury has convicted a Springfield daycare operator of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2011 death of an 11-month-old boy in her care.

Sixty-eight-year-old Cammie Kelly was found guilty Wednesday in the death of Kaiden

Gullidge of Rochester. She had been charged with first-degree murder.

The State-Journal Register reported she faces two to five years in prison when she’s sentenced.

Kelly, who operated a daycare in her apartment, told investigators Kaiden was sitting on the floor, fell over backward and hit his head. He died two days later.

Medical witnesses for the state testified the boy died from blunt force head trauma. Three medical experts presented by Kelly’s lawyer said he died of a thrombotic stroke.

College professor wearing headscarf put on leave

CHICAGO – A professor at a suburban Chicago Christian college who has been placed on administrative leave after donning a headscarf to demonstrate solidarity with Muslims said Wednesday that her actions are demonstrations of her own faith.

Larycia Hawkins, who is a Christian and an associate professor of political science at Wheaton College, a private evangelical school west of Chicago, was put on leave Tuesday. In recent days, she began wearing a hijab, the headscarf worn by some Muslim women, to counter what she called the “vitriolic” rhetoric against Muslims in recent weeks.

“In the spirit of Advent, my actions were motivated by a desire to live out my faith. Period,” Hawkins said Wednesday at a news conference at a Chicago church. Advent is the season leading up to Christmas.

Hawkins said she felt it was important to show solidarity with Muslims in the country.

“Theoretical solidarity is not solidarity,” the tenured faculty member said.

Supporters at the news conference included Wheaton students and Christian leaders who called for her reinstatement.

The college said in a statement Tuesday that it placed her on leave because of statements she made on social media about similarities between Islam and Christianity.

STATE BRIEFS U of Illinois gets $5.5 million DoD grant

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois says it’s receiving a $5.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to help local communities hit hard by cuts in defense spending.

Joey Mak is the university’s director of innovation and economic development. He discussed the grant on Wednesday during

a meeting of the state’s Interagency Military Base Support and Economic Development Committee. The grant is from the federal agency’s Office of Economic Adjustment.

Documents circulated during the meeting say five regions will be initially targeted. They are the Quad Cities, Rockford, Peoria, Metro East and Chicago.

The idea is to collect data about

Illinois’ defense sector and help communities by putting the data to work. Among other things, the money will be used to map defense assets.

Climate expert bets on snowy Christmas

CHAMPAIGN – The weather outside is far from frightful, with temperatures in Illinois running 10 degrees above average for

December.

People in the “Let It Snow” camp can take heart. Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel says a “white Christmas” may still be ahead.

He says that, in general, the odds of at least an inch of snow on the ground Dec. 25 are about 40 percent to 60 percent in the northern third of Illinois, 20 percent to 40 percent in central

Illinois, and zero to 20 percent in southern Illinois.

One of the biggest Christmas Day snowfalls was in Chicago in 1951 with 17 inches. Rockford had 14 inches of snow in 1951 and again in 2000.

LOCAL BRIEFS Initial probe of cadets in KKK-like garb completed

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel has completed its initial investigation into cadets appearing in photos with pillowcases on their heads similar to Ku Klux Klan garb, the South Carolina military college announced Wednesday.

Later civil-rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton met with the college’s president, retired Air Force Lt. Gen. John Rosa, and said his National Action Network is suspending its call that Rosa resign.

Photos of cadets dressed in white pants and shirts while wearing pillowcases on their heads surfaced on social media last week. The college said an investigation indicated the cadets were taking part in a “Ghosts of Christmas Past” skit.

A statement from the college said the eight cadets involved have given statements and are temporarily suspended. Seven freshmen cadets appeared with pillowcases on their heads while an upperclassman in the picture was not dressed up.

They will return for classes next month and face administrative hearings through the college’s military system. Then disciplinary recommendations will be made to Rosa.

By ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The Senate may reopen debate on National Security Agency wire-tapping authority after the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told The Associated Press on Wednesday, a divisive issue already roiling the GOP presidential field.

The Kentucky Republican said in an interview in his Capitol office that the terrorist attacks abroad and on U.S. soil have raised questions about Congress’ wisdom in limiting the authority earlier this year, something he personally opposed. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida sided with McConnell at the time but Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was on the other side, and the two GOP presidential candidates have been clashing heatedly on the issue, including in Tuesday night’s debate.

“There could be some second thoughts among both Republicans and Democrats in the wake of Paris and San Bernardino about the appropriateness of watering down our national security tools,”

McConnell said. “It’s an area we’re going to take a look at.

Because look, national security and these threats of terrorism are now right at the top of the list of concerns of the American people.”

McConnell declined to offer specifics on how the issue might be addressed once Congress comes into session next year, but said: “I think we’re going to have more and more discussion about that whole issue.”

The NSA issue pits privacy rights proponents against those pressing for tough postSept. 11 scrutiny. Rubio and McConnell both opposed dismantling the once-secret NSA program revealed by contractor Edward Snowden that until recently collected the landline calling records of nearly every American.

Cruz took the other side, supporting passage of the USA Freedom Act that limited government collection of phone records, instead keeping them in phone companies’ hands and requiring a court order to search them.

Cruz and Rubio clashed over the issue in Tuesday’s debate, with Cruz at one point

citing figures on percentages of phone numbers available to search in order to argue that the current system is better than the old one, partly because it includes cell records.

Rubio cautioned against discussing classified information, then went on to dispute Cruz.

That led to a flap on Capitol Hill on Wednesday when the Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman, Richard Burr of North Carolina, told reporters that he’d asked staff to look into whether Cruz had revealed classified information. Hours later Burr and the panel’s top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein of California, issued a joint statement stating that no investigation was under way. Committee aides did not respond to questions seeking clarity on the seeming discrepancy between Burr’s earlier comments and the statement with Feinstein.

McConnell said he did not know anything about that matter. And as he always does when questioned on the presidential campaign or candidates, McConnell refused to weigh in, though his clashes with Cruz are well known.

By KEN THOMAS The Associated Press OMAHA, Neb. – With billionaire investor Warren Buffett looking on, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that she wants to raise taxes on the wealthy and expand upon the so-called “Buffett rule” pushed by the Obama administration to raise tax rates on the richest Americans.

“I want to go even further, because Warren is 100 percent right, as usual,” Clinton said at a rally in Omaha, Nebraska, that featured a public endorsement from Buffett, the famed investor and one of the wealthiest people in America.

“I want to be the president for the struggling, the striving and the successful.”

Introducing Clinton, Buffett offered a litany of statistics describing a growing chasm between the nation’s rich and poor, lamenting, “millions and millions and millions of Amer-

icans have been left behind.”

Buffett was the namesake for the push by the Obama administration to seek a tax rate of 30 percent on those earning $1 million or more.

Cruz cast himself as a realist, arguing that while autocrats such as Syrian President Bashar Assad don’t share American values, their potential cooperation in fighting extremism is preferable to taking a chance on whoever might replace them.

“If we topple Assad, the result will be ISIS will take over Syria, and it will worsen U.S.

national security interests,” Cruz said, referring to the militant group that claimed responsibility for the attacks in Paris and appears to have inspired the California shooting. Cruz was backed by GOP front-runner Donald Trump and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who both said the U.S. has higher priorities than ousting Assad.

Rubio’s view was more in line with both the Bush and Obama administrations’ calls for backing the spread of democracy in the Middle East. He argued that Assad’s iron grip on power in Syria has allowed the Islamic State to thrive and said he “will not shed a tear” if he is pushed from power.

The Florida senator reiterated his position Wednesday during a campaign stop in New Hampshire, saying, “This idea that we can lead from behind, or in the case of Senator Cruz, not lead at all, will just leave more of these vacuums in other parts of the world.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DuPage River woes Dear Editor, This is a comment to the article “DuPage River’s health is more than water chemistry” about the DuPage River that was in the Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, edition of The Herald-News. I did not know about the meeting in Shorewood held by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. I have lived in Shorewood near the river for 50 years. All the ground here that would hold water is gone. We now have homes, driveways, and road with storm drains that run to this little river. At this time of the year all these roads use salt and the storm drains run into the DuPage River. I see these tiles draining into the river. I would like to see this

water being tested.

Also when the bridges were replaced, they were built with piers going into the river. The old bridges were one span, nothing in the water. At this time of the year, when ice floats on the water the piers block it and water backs up and causes flooding. I have pictures of this after the new bridges were built and my road was gone with a 10-foot-deep hole because of the ice blockage.

As I see it, the main problem with flooding in this river is the river is the same size as it was when I moved here 50 years ago but there is more water being sent to this river due to home and roads.

Christianity needs support in Middle East ROME – There are people being killed and crucified.

Families are being shackled.

Unspeakable things are being done to women. True Christian martyrdom is happening in the world today.

“The whole Middle East without exception is presently engulfed by a nightmare that seems to have no end and that undermines the very existence of minorities, particularly of Christians,” said Ignatius Youssef III Younan, patriarch of Antioch for the Syriac Catholic Church.

The word “genocide” is being used frequently here, at a conference about Christian persecution co-sponsored by the Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs at Georgetown University and The Center for Civil Rights at the University of Notre Dame.

Christians who lead rescue missions and support resettling and rebuilding the lives of those displaced by ISIS have the potential to build more than new life for families and individuals – they could rebuild civilization itself. Martyrs and radical witnesses are radical signs of hope in an ocean of hate.

The example of the martyrs shows how to give purpose to our lives, and helps us to reach out to those in need, to cooperate with others for the common good and to build a more just society that promotes human dignity, defends God’s gift of life and protects the wonders of nature, his creation and our common home.

But this is all just talk if we do not get serious. And, as

far as talk goes, help begins with one word: genocide.

The Obama administration is reportedly on the verge of declaring as genocide the widespread attacks against the Yazhidi religious minority in Iraq. Not extending this designation to Christians is absurd.

The designation opens all kinds of opportunities for assistance – besides being a simple statement of the truth. “How long does Iraq have to suffer?”

“Governments, religions and people of good will all over the world should be involved seriously to preserve and strengthen religious, indivisible freedom that allows people to think, express and act upon what they freely and deeply believe,” said the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Babylon, Louis Raphael I Sako. “Freedom is a basic and fundamental human right for all. The very least the U.S government could give persecuted Middle Eastern Christians for Christmas is a simple recognition of the terrible, unignorable reality.

Plenty of tournament talk for girls teams SCHEDULE

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com Two different types of tournaments are the topic of conversation for local girls basketball teams as the 2015 part of the schedule winds down.

While schools such as Providence and Romeoville already are competing in a holiday tournament, most other area squads will begin play in their events this weekend while some others won’t get started until after Christmas.

Things get started Friday at the Bradley-Bourbonnais tournament when Joliet West and Peotone meet at 6:30 p.m.

That even runs through December 22.

Then on Saturday, defending champion Lincoln-Way West takes on Morris at 9 a.m. n the Ottawa tournament, which concludes on December 23.

Five local teams will be competing at the Oswego East tournament, which runs from December 21-26. Those squads are Joliet Central, Lemont, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East and Plainfield North.

And four area squads will be playing at Lincoln-Way East’s Medieval Classic, which also runs from December 21-26. Local teams entered are Minooka, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Plainfield South, with the latter three competing in the same pool.

Romeoville also will take part in the Montini tournament along with Bolingbrook from December 26-30 and Joliet Catholic and Lockport compete in the Hillcrest Classic, which runs from Dec. 26-39.

Coal City and Reed-Custer will play in the Lisle tournament from Dec. 26-30 and Plainfield South also will take part in the State Farm Classic from Dec. 29-31 in Bloomington-Normal.

As for the postseason assignments, which were announced a week ago by the IHSA, most of the area’s Class 4A squads will be in a 22-team sectional at a site to be deter-

Although the wrestling season is not even a month old, thoughts are already beginning to focus on where teams are headed in the postseason and what the implications are of the recently announced assignments by the IHSA. All of the area’s Class 3A schools will compete in an individual sectional at Bolingbrook. There they are divided into three regionals, which will take place at Bradley-Bourbonnais, Lockport and Providence.

The Porters, who finished fourth at state a year ago to claim their first trophy in the sport, will host Bolingbrook, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North and Romeoville in their nine-team regional.

At the 10-team Providence Regional, the Celtics will be joined by Joliet Central, Joliet West, Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East.

And Minooka and Plainfield South will take part in the nine-team Bradley-Bourbonnais Regional.

The other site in the sectional, Quincy, features teams that are mostly from the St. Louis-area.

As has been the case, there was no dual team sectional host announced since geography usually forces the regional winners to compete at Class 1A or 2A sectional sites.

According to the most-recent GEI Apparel rankings on Illinois Matmen, the top teams in the sectional include No. 4 Lockport, No. 13 Edwardsville, No. 14 Moline, No. 16 Providence, No. 23 Plainfield South and No. 25 Lincoln-Way East.

In Class 2A, Lincoln-Way West hosts a regional that includes Joliet Catholic and Morris. The individual sectional will be at Washington while LaSalle-Peru hosts the dual team sectional.

Although the Warriors are ranked third in Class 2A, they may have to contend with No. 1 Washington or No. 5 Kaneland in the sectional just to earn a trip to the state finals.

In Class 1A, last year’s third-place finisher, Coal City, will be hosting a regional that includes Reed-Custer and Wilmington, while Peotone also hosts its own regional. All of those squads will compete in the individual sectional at Plano and the top dual teams will compete at the Wilmington Sectional. Coal City was ranked third in Class 1A in the most-recent poll.

The other Class 1A squad from the area, Seneca, will host its own regional but then will take part in the individual sectional at Princeton.

Celtics off to 6-3 start: After being down the past few

years, Providence looks like it has the potential to win 20 dual meets for the first time since 2010 and also capture its initial regional championship since 2009. Veteran coach Keith Healy recently joined an exclusive club of individuals who have not only won 500 dual meets, but done so at the same school.

“I am very excited about the season,” Healy said. “We have a good group of freshman and sophomores with some great senior leaders. Undefeated Cole Smith is leading the way while Jacob Lindsey, Ben Emery, Dominick Ambrose and Josh Ramos are all doing well along with seniors Tom Younker, and Mason Heimlich.”

Providence, which is ranked No. 16 in Class 3A re-

turns to action today against longtime rival Marist at Sacred Heart Gym. After the 6:15 p.m. varsity meet concludes, there will be an alumni gathering for what has been one of the state’s most-successful programs.

Healy still doesn’t have a full lineup and still won’’t for next week’s rugged Dvorak invite at Harlem. Then the Celtics host Lincoln-Way Central in their final dual meet of 2015.

Bolingbrook impresses so far: As the Raiders prepare

for next week’s Dvorak invite at Harlem, they already have much to be proud of in their first two tournament appearances.

Coach Dan Bullivant’s squad won Hinsdale South’s Matozzi invite on Dec. 5 and

then took third place at Hoffman Estates’ Marchese invite last Saturday.

“It was a great feeling,” Bullivant said of winning the Hinsdale South title. “Our guys wrestled for themselves and wrestled for each other.

They pushed hard for extra bonus points when we needed them and it speaks to their work ethic.

“We are expecting big performances from our returning starters from last year.

Seniors Titus Wonsey, Clarence Golden, Frankie Rodriguez and John O’Brien, are all four-year varsity starters that make up the core of our team.

They are setting an example for the younger wrestlers and are working hard to improve and finish the season at the top of their game.”

IHSA announces bowling assignments SUBMIITED REPORTS BLOOMINGTON – With several bowling teams ranked among the best in the state, there was a great deal of anticipation for both the girls and boys squads as to where the IHSA would be sending them for state tournament competition. Everyone finally got their answers on Wednesday when the IHSA released its assignments for the two sports.

Joliet West will host a sectional at Town & Country Lanes which will feature most of the area’s girls squads. Defending state champion and second-ranked Lockport will take part in the Sandburg Regional at Orland Bowl. The Porters will be joined there

by Lemont, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield South and Romeoville.

The rest of the area teams in that sectional will be at the Rich East Regional, which will take place at Lakewood Bowl. That field includes third-ranked Joliet West as well as ranked teams in Minooka and Lincoln-Way West.

Other squads are Joliet Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way Central and Peotone.

Bowlers from the Bremen Regional also advance to the Joliet West Sectional. Bolingbrook competes in an undetermined regional site that feeds into the Reavis Sectional.

On the boys side, eight area teams will compete in the Plainfield South Regional at Town & Country Lanes. Those squads are Bolingbrook, Lemont, Lockport, Plainfield Central,

Plainfield east, Plainfield North, Plainfield South and Romeoville.

Seven other squads will take part in the Minooka Regional at Channahon Lanes.

Those teams are Lincoln-Way East, Joliet Central, Joliet West, Minooka, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way West and Providence.

Both regionals join competitors from regionals at Chicago Brooks and Andrew who will advance to the Sandburg Sectional, which will take place at Orland Bowl.

USA Baseball Hitting Camp:

A hitting camp presented by Bill Krejci of USA Baseball will be held on Dec. 26-27 at Plainfield South’s fieldhouse with the proceeds benefiting the Cougars’ baseball program.

Krejci has been affiliated with USA baseball for 20 years. In 1998 he was an assistant on a youth team that won the gold medal at the world games and the next year his squad won the gold medal. He was also head coach of a junior team that won a silver medal in the world championships. The hall of fame coach is an adviser at all levels of USA Baseball.

The camp runs on Dec. 26-27 for those in grades one through eight. The times for grades one through four are Dec. 26 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and on Dec. 27 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. For those in grades five through eight, the times are Dec. 26 from 1-4 p.m. and on Dec. 27 from 12-3 p.m. The cost of the camp is $60 and walk-ins are welcome.

But they really solved it by acquiring Frazier from the Cincinnati Reds in a three-team trade that sent Thompson, right-hander Frankie Montas and second baseman Micah Johnson to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Frazier, who turns 30 in February, has two years of team control left on his contract, including $7.5 million in 2016.

“It’s never easy to give up homegrown, quality young talent,” Hahn said. “At the same time, we are very aware you have to give up something to get something. We’re thrilled to get Todd.”

Frazier gives the Sox a sorely needed power bat for the middle of the order and a favorable clubhouse presence.

Lawrie will play second base, where he spent 40 games with the A’s last season. Frazier was a finalist for a Gold Glove Award last season while hitting 35 homers, 43 doubles

and driving in 89 runs. Lawrie hit 16 homers, so the Sox’s pitter-patter lineup has added pop to the tune of 51 homers.

“Todd is one of the finer allaround third basemen in the league,” Hahn said. “He is a high-character, smart baseball player who will provide an impact bat in the middle of our order. He solidifies us defensively at third base and provides a great presence in our lineup and in the clubhouse.”

The Reds, in rebuild mode, received infielders Brandon Dixon and Jose Peraza and outfielder Scott Schebler from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Frazier was one of four players to hit at least 40 doubles and 35 home runs, along with the New York Mets’ Cespedes, the Toronto Blue Jays’ Josh Donaldson and the Colorado Rockies’ Nolan Arenado, and the second Red to accomplish the feat, joining Hall of Famer Frank Robinson (1962). He won the Home Run Derby at the 2015 All-Star Game in Cincinnati.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush What is not at all clear is whether Leno, Grasu and right guard Patrick Omameh can be counted on as anything more than placeholders going forward.

Leno has been a pleasant surprise in pass protection but less than adequate blocking for the run, and it is easy to imagine improvement in the offense with a more skilled player at the most important position on the offensive line.

There is still some room between Omameh and his ceiling, but to date he has been just a guy, struggling with holding penalties.

Grasu appears to be born to play the center position but clearly needs a huge offseason in the weight room to get big enough and strong enough to be consistently effective.

A wild card is this year’s sixth-round pick, Tayo Fabuluje, who is one of the biggest players in the league and originally was slated to learn the right tackle spot but appears to have the feet and athleticism to play on the left side, too.

With Fabuluje just reactivated after his four-game suspension for a failed banned-substance test, it would be crazy not to get him some playing time in these last three games to get a feel for what he can do.

It wouldn’t be stunning to see Montgomery back on another one-year deal to support, teach and back up Grasu based on his history with Fox and O-line coach Dave Magazu in Denver and Carolina.

I’m guessing with Grasu, Slauson and possibly Montgomery, the Bears will be fine at center and at least one guard and one tackle spot with Slauson and Long.

But if they don’t get a big next three games from Omameh and Leno, I’d argue they’ll have a real need at both tackle and guard in the coming draft.

In one splashy trade for slugging All-Star third baseman Todd Frazier on Wednesday, the White Sox showed their intention – in typical Sox style – is to try to win now rather than later.

The three-team deal that cost them three prospects, including outfielder Trayce Thompson, also suggested they might be willing to go a step further and pursue an outfielder such as Justin Upton, Yoenis Cespedes or Alex Gordon, although as likely nine-figure free agents each one would cost them more than any Sox has been paid.

While the Sox seem OK with Tyler Saladino manning shortstop, Ian Desmond is on the market, too. For any high-priced free agent, it likely would require a back-loaded deal or a taker for part of Adam LaRoche’s or John Danks’ salaries (about $26 million combined) to keep the Sox’s payroll near $120 million, likely the targeted maximum for 2016.

“We shall see,” general manager Rick Hahn said when asked whether the Sox might be in the mix for a big-ticket upgrade.

“We’re going to continue to be aggressive on numerous fronts and certainly continue to talk to various free agents as well as other clubs about trades, and we’ll have to see how the coming weeks unfold.”

Even if you’re a converted Jay Cutler fan now, does it make sense to give David Fales a start or at least some playing time to see whether they have a reliable backup who might even develop into a potential starter?

There is no question the Bears need more help at wide receiver. The question is how much?

How badly do they need Martellus Bennett back, and how badly do they want him back?

Do they need help on the offensive line and, if so, how much?

It’s the last question that intrigues me the most, because four or five weeks ago I would have said the O-line was the most talented and stable part of the offense going forward.

Now I’m not so sure.

Jermon Bushrod is back on the field as a second tight end in running situations but apparently unable to reclaim his job from Charles Leno Jr. With two years left on his deal at between $8 million and $9 million a year and back surgery on his résumé, it seems unlikely he will be back.

Center Will Montgomery is here on a one-year, veteran minimum deal, and although he was arguably the Bears’ best offensive lineman through the first three games of the season before he broke his tibia, the Bears can save half a million dollars by signing a younger player.

The only sure things the Bears have right now are Matt Slauson, who will be good either at left guard or center if need be, and Kyle Long, who can be one of the best in the league at either guard or tackle spot, depending on where the Bears eventually decide to let him take up permanent residence.

The methodical brand of basketball that Bo Ryan ran at Wisconsin rarely surprised opponents as it piled up wins and two trips to the Final Four over the last two seasons.

Ryan saved the biggest shocker of his career for his final game.

The 67-year-old coach abruptly retired on Tuesday night, 12 games into the season after his Badgers beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi two weeks before Bo Ryan Big Ten play begins.

No farewell tour. No muss, no fuss.

Just the way he wanted it.

Ryan had discussed retirement for months, but never offered any specific timetable.

“It is so emotional right now, and I’m trying to hold this together,” Ryan said as he began to wrap up his remarks.

He had a prepared speech ready to go, printed on a white piece of paper, but decided at the last second to set it aside and speak from the heart in his last news conference as head coach.

“Can’t put that into words,” Ryan said. “I can’t do that. I’ve got to tell you how I feel.”

It was classic Bo – rarely shy to hold back, whether it was about a call, his team or the future.

And it’s in part what started the “Will he or won’t he?” retire drama in the first place.

Ryan, who turns 68 on Sunday, said in June that this would be his last season. He had told athletic director Barry Alvarez of his plans after the Final Four in April, but Alvarez advised him to give it some time, and not to make a decision right after the end of the season.

At a charity golf event in August, Ryan left the door open to return.

In making his announcement on Tuesday, Ryan revealed another factor in the timing. He said he would have retired in June, but associate head coach Greg Gard’s father had just been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Ryan said the demands on Gard’s time to fly around the country meeting with doctors and helping his dad put his retirement on the back burner.

The elder Gard died on Oct. 30.

Ryan later talked to Alvarez.

He said that he came to a decision in recent weeks that the semester break would be a good time to step down.

Gard was named the interim head coach by Alvarez.

“Every coach would like their top assistant to be the coach,” Ryan said after the 64-49 victory in his final game.

Gard is considered one of the top assistants in the game. He has worked with Ryan for 20 seasons, including 14-plus years in Madison.

He still has a tough act to follow.

With 364 victories, Ryan is Wisconsin’s winningest coach.

Ryan finished with a career mark of 747-233, good for 27th on the NCAA career wins list when counting successful tenures at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Division III Wisconsin-Platteville. He won four national titles at Platteville.

But it’s in the Big Ten where Ryan especially made his mark with 14 straight NCAA appearances and seven conference championships. In 2014-15, his final full season, Wisconsin finished a school record 36-4 and advanced to the NCAA title game, losing to Duke.

Those squads relied on upperclassmen and defense in an era of one-of-done headliners.

Ryan molded offensive stars, for sure, such as Sam Dekker and 2014-15 national player of the year Frank Kaminsky, but players knew they had to play defense and play with smarts to earn time.

Mokena man joins Harvey church with few members, large inner-city outreach

Instructions include feeding the hungry, forgiving the guilty, welcoming the stranger and loving enemies. Four years ago, Todd Koper of Mokena found a church that he feels emphasizes these precepts and added it to his roster of three other churches that feed him spiritually.

Just as the Biblical prophet Micah considered Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, as insignificant among the clans of Judah, St. Clement’s Episcopal Todd Koper Church, located in a poor neighborhood in Harvey, really can’t compete with today’s megachurches. Nor does it try.

On a good day, the church boasts 15 to 20 people at Sunday services, with another 15 to 20 people on the membership roster that rarely attend, Koper said. Sixty percent of those members are black, he said.

Surgeons and engineers in expensive suits worship beside brethren who use food stamps and wear torn dungarees, Koper said. Furthermore, St. Clement’s embraces the LGBT population, hosts an annual June water blessing that contains Christian and pagan references, and has a 20-year-old weekly food pantry that feeds 100 families a week, Koper said.

According to its website, St. Clement’s Episcopal Church also distributes clothing on the fourth Wednesday of the month and conducts a 15-minute weekly radio outreach program at 12:45 a.m. every Thursday on WBGX, AM 1570.

by Master Point Press are labeled “Intermediate/Advanced.” Each contains a lot of information on a specialized subject.

“Sixpack” by Allan DeSerpa is about Six Ace Roman Key Card Blackwood, which occurs when a partnership has bid and supported two suits. The six key cards are the four aces and both agreed-suit kings. There is also discussion of several bidding situations.

“Mastering Hand Evaluation” by Lawrence Diamond is self-explanatory.

It gives comprehensive coverage of the most well-known methods.

“Better Signalling Now” by Mark Horton is the third edition of a book first published in 1994. It covers all of the basic aspects of defense and several more advanced methods.

“Conventions Today” by Brian Senior gives the basics of many bidding styles (for example, better minor) and conventions, often with the author explaining his preferences.

This is one of the easier deals from Horton’s book. After that competitive auction, South is in three no-trump.

West leads the diamond king. How should East plan the defense?

hygiene” habits to help you get some shuteye: • Stay away from stimulants. Avoid caffeinated beverages after early afternoon.

• Don’t nap if you can avoid it. If you can’t stay awake, limit yourself to a 15- to 20-minute afternoon nap.

• Exercise regularly, but not within a few hours of bedtime.

• Set a sleep schedule.

Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, no matter how much sleep you’ve gotten.

• Make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary. Reserve it for sleep, intimacy, and restful activities such as meditation and reading for pleasure.

Keep it cool, dark and quiet.

• Don’t watch the clock. Watching the sleepless minutes pass makes it harder to fall back to sleep. Turn the clock face so you can’t see it.

• Establish a relaxing routine before bedtime.

Meditate, take a warm shower or listen to quiet music.

I know that some of my patients find advice like this to be simplistic.

Basically, they are looking for a pill that makes them sleep like a baby every night, without side effects. If there were such a pill, I’d prescribe it, but there isn’t.

The sleep hygiene habits I recommend really do work. Many of my patients have told me: “Well, I have to tell you I was dubious, and it didn’t happen immediately. But I’m definitely sleeping better, so thanks.”

Dear Dr. K: I struggle with insomnia. How can I overcome this problem without drugs or supplements?

Dear Reader: Insomnia is a common problem in which sleepless nights turn into fatigue-filled days. A form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) known as CBT for insomnia, or CBT-I, targets the root cause of insomnia without medication. This short-term talk therapy teaches people to change unproductive thinking and behaviors that get in the way of a good night’s sleep.

Researchers recently looked at 20 trials of CBT-I involving more than 1,100 people with ongoing insomnia. On average, people treated with CBT-I fell asleep almost 20 minutes faster and spent 30 fewer minutes awake during the night compared with people who didn’t undergo CBT-I. These improvements are as good as, or better than, those seen in people who take prescription sleep medications. And unlike medications, the effects of CBT-I last after the therapy ends.

CBT-I usually involves meeting with a therapist once a week for several weeks. A common recommendation from CBT-I is to get out of bed if you don’t fall asleep within 20 minutes.

The idea is to associate your bed with relaxation and comfort, not frustration and worry.

Learning relaxation techniques like mindfulness meditation is another key part of CBT-I. People with insomnia also tend to worry about the consequences of poor sleep. A CBT-I therapist can help you replace negative thoughts (“I’ll be too tired to work tomorrow!”) with more positive ones (“I usually do my work well, even when I feel tired”).

Dear Abby : After I became an adult and left home, my father remarried a woman with a grown son. “Jack” has been incarcerated for the past several years. I have only vague information about what he did, but I do know it was related to drugs and gang affiliation.

His mother insists he was “framed” and refuses to talk about the charges.

I haven’t been able to find any public information except that this wasn’t the first time he was arrested.

My father has hinted that there is a bigger story there, but he keeps quiet out of respect for his wife’s feelings.
