Police investigate homicide in Joliet One dead, one injured in shooting

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police are investigating a shooting that led to the death of a Joliet man and injured his teenage brother.

At 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Terion D. Steward, 21, of Joliet, and his 15-year-old brother were walking along McDonough Street when a car drove by.

Someone from the driver side fired shots at them, Joliet police said.

Police were called to the

scene around that time, Deputy Chief Al Roechner said.

The shooting occurred at McDonough and Joliet streets.

Steward was hit twice – once in the head and once through the right thigh – and his brother was struck in his right foot.

Both were taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where Steward was pronounced dead at 8:18 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The vehicle that drove past

the brothers was “dark colored,” but police do not know the make or model, Roechner said.

He said police have no witnesses at the moment, other than Steward’s brother, who was in fine condition Monday.

“He had nothing to give us, so we’re looking for anyone to give us information,” he said.

Mayor says businesses lining up for New Lenox development

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Three new businesses have lined up to become part of the redevelopment of downtown New Lenox.

Mayor Tim Baldermann said he couldn’t disclose the names, but noted one is a “nice fine dining” restaurant.

They will move into an area village officials hope to recreate into a thriving downtown.

And residents will have other amenities to look forward to, he said.

“The sales taxes will help build a deeply-needed train station,” Baldermann said.

On Dec. 8, village trustees tabled a decision to tear down a landmark building that once housed Brun’s Tavern and Restaurant and the House of Hughes.

Village officials bought the building for about $505,000 and plan to demolish it to make way for new businesses.

They also plan to buy the BP gas station, a dry cleaner business and the Pit Stop bar and redevelop those properties.

“They want to see the old buildings torn down and see some new businesses and amenities we don’t really have.”

Tim Baldermann Mayor of New Lenox The cost of acquiring the properties, located along Route 30, would be about $2.8 million. While the village had to buy the former House of Hughes building because it was owned by a bank, Baldermann said the others could be assigned to a developer to close on them.

If they need to buy them, village officials would issue a bond and pay it off after selling the buildings, he said.

Sales tax and other revenue sources from the new properties would pay for a new train station.

The village has yet to acquire the other properties.

Baldermann said village officials are doing their “due dili-

gence,” to ensure there are no issues with them. With the BP gas station, he said officials must make sure there are no environmental issues.

“As soon as we can, we will close on those three properties and demolish everything, and we are going to sell them to a couple of different developers to develop the site,” he said.

Baldermann said two developers are lined up for the project, one to tackle the western side of the site and the other the eastern side. He declined to name them, since they are awaiting in-house approval to move forward with development.

He said the western part of the downtown area will have the “biggest sales tax producing businesses,” and the eastern side may have an 8,000-square-foot building containing several businesses.

Residents have shown excitement over a prospective new downtown, he said.

“They want to see the old buildings torn down and see some new businesses and amenities we don’t really have,” he said.

QUICK NEWS Plainfield ratings go up PLAINFIELD – The village’s water and sewer revenue bond ratings were upgraded this week, and will save the village almost $900,000.

Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s ratings services both upgraded the bond ratings for the fund, according to village news releases. Moody’s upgraded the bond ratings, which was split in two, from “Aa3” and “A1” to “Aa2” and “Aa3,” while Standard & Poor’s upgraded the ratings from “AA” and AA-” to both “AA+.”

The upgrades means the village will save an estimated $890,000 over the life of the 26year bond set to expire in 2034, according to village Director of Management Services Traci Plekham.

“The village board and staff have worked hard to improve the village’s financial position, and we’re pleased that both Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s have recognized our hard work,” Collins said in the news release.

Construction of new Rialto marquee well underway

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Construction of the Rialto Square Theatre’s new marquee design is well underway – limiting what changes, if any, can be done in light of recent public outcry, the theater’s general manager told Joliet City Council members Monday night.

Monday’s pre-council meeting gave Randy Green, the theater’s general manager, along with residents opposed to the design, an opportunity to speak before the City Council about the downtown theater marquee controversy.

About half a dozen residents spoke out against the design after Green’s presentation Monday night.

The design for the new marquee, first unveiled last month, includes a digital display to showcase upcoming acts, but many have criticized the modern version, saying the new design doesn’t fit with the character of the 88-year-old building.

Others have concerns about the space devoted to honor the parents of the donor.

Last month’s announcement has since prompted an online firestorm of criticism from many area residents on Facebook, a request for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office to determine whether the Historic Preservation Commission violated the Illinois Open Meetings Act, a call to city officials to withhold funding from the historic theater, and a protest outside the theater over the weekend.

The vetting process for the design started back in 2007, but a $350,000 donation from area businessman Ed Czerkies only just recently made the new marquee possible, Green told council members Monday.

But that’s one design element that Ron Gruber, 56, of Joliet deemed inappropriate Monday night, noting taxpayers should, in theory, be honored equally because they essentially help pay for the Rialto’s operations when the city sets aside funding for the Joliet theater each year.

“The residents have been supporting this theater to [the] tune of $600,000 for how many years now? That money’s not coming out of [your] pockets. It’s coming out of taxpayers’ pockets,” Gruber said to council members Monday.

“It’s coming out of everybody’s pockets, not just yours. So why don’t we have a plaque for every taxpayer that’s donated, essentially donated, to the Rialto? Wouldn’t that make sense, too?”

District 5 Councilman Terry Morris asked whether there

had been any discussion to remove Czerkies’ parents from the design.

Both Green and Jim Smith, chairman of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, said it was discussed, but that any talks he had with Czerkies over the past few weeks have only been to reaffirm the Rialto’s commitment to the current

design.

“If you’d have to characterize it, he’s very concerned and not pleased,” Smith said, adding that he found it refreshing to see the community’s passion for the Rialto.

The donor is “certainly expecting” that to remain, Green said.

Residents, including Sherry Lewandowski of Shorewood,

argued Monday that the new marquee design should be reconsidered because she believes it doesn’t complement the theater building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“It is noteworthy that our very public objections are not wrapped around the addition of the family name per se, but the overall drastic changes to the marquee design, a marquee that has been featured with countless stars both big and small, several films over the years, and young couples romantically photographing their wedding day with their names elegantly displayed in lights,” Lewandowski said.

Green said he has spoken with photographers, and it would be easy to Photoshop out the names from photographs.

Others questioned the transparency of the process, but Green said the he followed protocol, and went to City Manager Jim Hock earlier this summer to keep him up-to-date on the board finding a donor.

The design was reviewed by the city’s Historic Preservation Commission and did not require state approval because no state or federal funding is required to complete the project.

Green invited residents to the theater’s board meeting Wednesday to offer opinions on the design, but he cautioned any changes moving forward would greatly “depend on what the modifications” were.

Outside the meeting, Green said the company hired to build the new marquee has been “well along in construction” since the board signed off on the project in September.

The project is on track to be installed by mid-to-late February, he said.

The Rialto’s board will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Rialto Square Theatre’s auditorium, 102 N. Chicago St.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Dozens of educators once again picketed the Plainfield School District 202 board meeting during a cold and rainy Monday, showing support for the teachers union in contract negotiations.

Teachers’ main concerns with the contract continue to include addressing an increased workload due to stacking of classes and rapid changing of programs, an emphasis on testing and step increases in pay for teachers, Association of Plainfield Teachers President Dawn Bullock said.

Since October, teachers have been picketing board meetings, hoping to get board members’ attention and educate the public on how issues teachers are facing in the classroom are affecting the students.

Both Dawn Bullock, the teachers union president, and Superintendent Lane Abrell have said they are continuing to work in good faith on the contract.

“We’re at the point where we’re wearing too many hats,” he said.

In addition to these issues, Bullock said stacking of classes have been an issue of contention with many teachers.

Stacking is when the district hires a teacher’s aide to gain the ability to add students

to one class. That class starts to swell with more students than other classes.

“We’ve proposed language in the contract that allows them to stack classes, but to a certain extent,” Bullock said, adding that stacking adds strain to one teacher’s class, while others work with fewer students.

Abrell said stacking saves the district money.

“It’s a very financially effective use of resources,” Abrell said, adding that the administration is currently evaluating the impact of stacking on students and teachers.

Bullock said the union also is advocating for a greater step increase in salary, mean-

Bullock said testing is one of the bigger issues with the teachers union, and that it was frustrating for many educators who feel tests are dictating them in some way.

In response to a comment by teachers at the board meeting, school board member Rod Westfall said he also was concerned about the increase in tests, and that over the years the school board has worked to encourage economic development to help bring more money into the district for teachers.

Board President Roger Bonuchi spoke with picketing teachers before the board meeting about their concerns with the contract.

“It was very informative to watch the teachers who came out and talk with them,” he said.

District 202 passes 19 percent tax levy increase

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield School District 202 Board of Education approved Monday a 19 percent increase in the 2014 tax levy. But officials only expect the Will County and Kendall County clerks to approve a 1.5 percent in-

crease.

The levy was approved at $250.8 million in local property taxes, including bond and interest. The 2013 extension, or the amount the district actually received, was $173.8 million.

However, the tax levy is expected to be closer to $176.3 million, or about $2.5 million

more than the 2013 extension.

The state tax cap law limits the actual additional amount the district can get by the lesser of 5 percent or the rate of inflation, which is 1.5 percent this year, district spokesman Tom Hernandez said.

“It’s a balloon levy. It’s very common,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez said the levy

was set at such a high rate to make sure the district gets all the property tax revenue it can, pending the uncertainty with how much the district will be allowed to receive.

The tax rate has yet to be determined and will be based on the equalized assessed value of the district.

“Ultimately, they’re going to be limited by what the law says,” she said.

Will County committee signs off on settlement in ‘Honeybee’ case

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – County officials are closer to finalizing a settlement with a Lynwood police officer falsely accused of being the “Honeybee Killer” in a 2010 shooting spree.

The County Board’s Executive Committee voted at its Thursday meeting to accept its lawyers’ recommendation related to a possible case settlement, Will County Board Member Suzanne Hart said Saturday. The full County Board – which meets later this week – still has to sign off on the agreement, Hart said.

She declined to comment further.

A year after his release from jail, Brian Dorian, the police officer accused in the murder, filed suit in 2011 seeking more than $1 million in damages. The suit claimed county officials “fabricated evidence and supplied slanderous and defamatory information to the press.”

The case is set for a status hearing March 13, according to U.S. District Court docket reports.

Dorian was arrested and charged with murder in an October 2010 shooting spree where a man shot to death a construction worker and injured another man near Beecher after asking them about honeybees. The shooter

then drove his pickup truck to Lake County, Indiana, where he shot and injured a farmer.

The man investigators believe to be the real killer, 48-year-old Gary Amaya, was gunned down in December during a hold-up at a tanning salon in Orland Park.

All charges were later dropped against Dorian after evidence showed he was on his computer at the time of the crimes and that neither he nor his truck matched descriptions given to police by witnesses.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office had no comment on the matter, spokesman Charles Pelkie said Monday.

LOCAL BRIEF MORRIS – With a new human resources director set to start Jan. 5, Grundy County’s Personnel Committee is preparing to search for a new county administrator.

Heidi Miller, Land Use Director and immediate past administrator, resigned from the administrator position in September after five months on the job. She previously said she resigned from the position after not following proper hiring protocol.

Miller was the fourth administrator the county has had since 2011.

Grundy County Board

Chairman David Welter said he expects the Personnel Committee to fine-tune the job description and post the position Jan. 8 at its next meeting. He anticipates an ad hoc committee will be formed for interviews, and that the full board might consider an appointment in February.

Vicki Geiger, Personnel Committee chairwoman, said the county is working diligently toward filling the administrator position, noting it is a key position in the county. The administrator gathers information to better inform the County Board in its decision-making, she noted.

Grundy County to prepare for hunt for administrator

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Mental Health Court is moving forward after receiving a grant from Adult Redeploy Illinois for $51,380.

Mental Health Court will divert nonviolent, mentally ill offenders away from prisons and into a rehabilitation program.

Local officials and professionals worked together for five years to obtain approval for the court, which was granted in June by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority.

Organizers first submitted

an application for $100,000 for a full year and hoped to begin last fall, but funds were not available and they were told to resubmit a grant application for six months. The group received word Thursday that the resubmitted application was approved.

Grundy County Judge Lance Peterson said he expects the program to start by Feb. 1.

The state funding is administered through Illinois Adult Redeploy, an organization sponsoring state programs aimed at reducing prison overcrowding, disrupting the incarceration cycle and saving taxpayer money.

The federal government has charged automakers with creating vehicles that offer higher MPG (miles per gallon) ratings in the coming years. A second technology is called displacement on demand (DOD), or variable cylinder management. Chrysler uses this technology, called Fuel Saver Technology, on some of its new vehicles. It automatically deactivates four cylinders when the full eight cylinders are not needed.

One excellent example of an advancement in highway fuel efficiency is the Dodge Challenger, which, as a high-performance vehicle, offers an impressive 30 highway mpg. Another example is the Chrysler 300; when equipped with a V6 engine, both the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions provide Best-In-Class highway fuel economy. The Chrysler 200, equipped with a 2.4L engine, offers up to 36 mpg on the highway.

JEFF FOWLER Jeff Fowler, age 54, died Monday, December 15, 2014, at Salem Village Nursing Home in Joliet, from a yearlong battle with colon cancer.

He was a lifelong resident of the Joliet area. He sold many vehicles at Dzak Motors and Bill Jacobs Chevrolet, where he was known as “Mustache Joe”. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a really nice guy.

(Kerry) Goodwin. Tom was a devoted grandfather to ten grandchildren, Sean, Thomas and Colleen Coyle, Declan McInerney, Kaylin and Haydn Mahoney and Delaney, Cameron, Ava and Nolan Goodwin. Also survived by his sister, Phyllis Goodwin, Lawrence (Cheryl) Goodwin of Manhattan; and sister-in-law, Jodie Facchina, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his father, Ralph Henry Goodwin; and mother, Mildred (nee Downs) Goodwin; and his brother, Gordon Goodwin.

Born in Manhattan, IL on March 20, 1934. Tom graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1952.

Then served in the Marine Corp as a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp. where he traveled to Hawaii and Japan representing the United States from 1953-1956. After returning home, Thomas went on to Joliet Junior College then Illinois Wesleyan University where he earned a degree in Music Education. He also received a Master’s Degree from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago.

After marrying Elizabeth (Betty) Branchaw in 1959, he devoted his talents and love of music as Band Director of the New Lenox Grade School Bands for 31 years. His achievements included the JTHS Band Alumni Association Outstanding Achievement and Distinguished Service Award, the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award and the Illinois Grade School Music Association Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education.

Thomas was a member of the American Legion Band, Dixieland All-Stars, Dellwood Park Band, Bi-Centenniel Park Band, and Bill Edwards Trio.

He also provided numerous hours of volunteer work for the Joliet Band Parents Association and the Ingalls Park United Methodist Church. Marvin loved to sing, write poetry and was a wood craftsman. He will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends.

Political powerhouse David Garth dies

By KILEY ARMSTONG and JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press NEW YORK – Powerful political adviser David Garth, who spearheaded the creation of the modern political TV commercial and helped elect governors, senators and mayors, has died at age 84.

He died Monday at his home in Manhattan after a long illness, said longtime colleague George Arzt, who served as former Mayor Ed Koch’s press secretary.

Garth never held office but was instrumental in shaping New York’s government and

political process. The mayors he helped elect – John Lindsay, Koch, Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg – served 38 of the last 45 years, and he helped Gov. Hugh Carey capture office in 1974.

Artz said no one in his lifetime ever talked about Garth “without putting genius in front of his name.”

“He’s probably had more of an impact on the history of the city since the 1960s than any one person,” Artz said. “There probably will never be anyone like him again.”

Garth, who worked for Democrats and some moderate Republicans, was known

for being fiercely competitive with a high success rate on Election Day. He was an outsized figure who was known for his salty language and became the basis for the political mastermind in the Robert Redford 1972 movie “The Candidate.”

He insisted that his candidates speak directly to voters, often in direct-to-camera commercials, and admit when they made mistakes. He ran New York’s first television-based campaign in 1965, helping little known Rep. John Lindsay capture City Hall.

Garth helped another underdog, Koch, defeat Mario

Cuomo for mayor in 1977 and so impressed the vanquished candidate that he asked Garth to help his own gubernatorial campaign years later.

Garth also brokered Giuliani’s late 2001 endorsement of Bloomberg, a political neophyte who was trailing in the polls until he received the blessing of Giuliani, the outgoing incumbent hailed as a national hero for his leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

“Each time, he took on a candidate he believed in at a time when New York was in crisis,” Bloomberg said in a statement. “His success in po-

litical campaigns can be seen in his extraordinary wonloss record, but his greatest achievement is the sum of his work: a city and state that are stronger than ever.”

Among Garth’s other clients: Governors Ella Grasso of Connecticut and Brendan Byrne of New Jersey, Senators Arlen Specter and John Heinz of Pennsylvania and Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles.

He also worked with Adlai Stevenson during his unsuccessful 1960 presidential campaign.

Garth’s funeral will be private, with a memorial service to be scheduled later.

AG: After appointees, voters must pick comptroller

CHICAGO – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan urged lawmakers Monday to let voters choose a replacement for the late Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka in 2016 after outgoing Gov. Pat Quinn and Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner make separate appointments to fill the job in the interim.

In a legal analysis, Madigan said Quinn can name an appointee until Jan. 12, when current terms end and newly elected officials are sworn in.

Once Rauner takes office he can pick someone to fill the full term.

But Madigan cautioned that allowing an appointee to serve all four years of an elected office is “undemocratic” and legislators should approve a special election for the 2016 presidential election year.

Topinka, a Republican who had won a second four-year term in November, died last week from complications following a stroke.

Her death created a rare situation for the outgoing Democratic governor and incoming Republican governor. Interpretations of the Illinois Constitution and state statute outline provisions for the governor to appoint someone and special elections, but haven’t been decisive.

The lack of clarity has left party leaders bickering about next steps in the handoff of power between Quinn and Rauner, who’ll be Illinois’ first Republican governor in more than a decade and face Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.

Report: Overcrowding after Dwight prison closing

SPRINGFIELD – Moving about 1,000 female inmates from a closed prison in Dwight to another in Logan County has exacerbated overcrowding and not generated meaningful cost savings, according to a report from the John Howard Association.

Gov. Pat Quinn ordered the closing of the Dwight Correctional Center last year as a

cost-cutting move. The Chicago-based prison watchdog group based its report on three visits to the Logan Correctional Center, according to the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises Newspapers, which obtained a copy of the report that is expected to be released Monday.

“While the Quinn administration argued re-purposing Logan would reduce costs and create a more efficient and rehabilitative environment for the state’s female prison population, it has exacerbated overcrowded conditions, damaged the agency’s capacity to address the needs of female inmates, and failed to generate meaningful cost savings,” the report said.

The association found nearly 2,000 inmates are being held in the Logan Correctional Center – the state’s main facility for medium and maximum-security female inmates – which was built to house about 1,100 inmates. Dozens of inmates bunk in a gymnasium, there are a shortage of medical staff and not enough beds for mentally ill prisoners, the report found.

Police charge 17-year-old in teen’s fatal shooting

CHICAGO – A 17-year-old has been charged with murder in the shooting death of another teenager during what the victim’s aunt says was an attempt to steal his jacket.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the 17-year-old was arrested Sunday. Three others were being sought.

Demario Bailey was killed Saturday in the Englewood neighborhood on the city’s South Side, three days before his 16th birthday.

The victim’s aunt, Michelle Fitzpatrick, said her nephew and his twin brother, Demacio Bailey, were walking to Demacio’s basketball practice when would-be robbers demanded the victim’s jacket. Fitzpatrick said Demario Bailey was shot in the chest when he wouldn’t comply, and died a short time later.

Thieves adopt ‘crash-and-grab’ tactics

CHICAGO – All the burglars

use the same audacious tactics: A vehicle crashes through a storefront in the wee hours and up to six people in dark clothing and ski masks pour out, grabbing whatever they can with the speed of a NASCAR pit crew.

Then the thieves dash out over the broken glass to a waiting getaway car.

Since September, at least a dozen “crash-and-grab” burglaries have been reported at retail businesses in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Some targeted high-end businesses, including a Neiman Marcus store on the famed Magnificent Mile. Others struck less affluent locations such as a pawn shop on the South Side and clothing stores on the far West Side.

The thefts have made shop owners nervous, and police are still pursuing their first arrest.

“Everybody’s on edge. Everybody’s worried it’s going to happen to them,” said Randy Cohen, who has been in the pawn-shop business for some 40 years and never seen this kind of fear among fellow business owners.

As one major enrollment deadline loomed Monday, officials granted a last-minute extension for some consumers facing long telephone hold times at the federal call center. They were being asked to leave a number to get called back starting Tuesday.

An Associated Press-GfK poll earlier this month found an uptick for the Affordable Care Act, with 29 percent saying they support it, compared with 25 percent in October. Opposition to “Obamacare” was stable at 41 percent, while the rest were on the fence.

Mother: Boy killed by police never had a chance

NEW YORK – The mother of a 12-year-old Ohio boy fatally shot by police who believed he was carrying a gun said Monday he was never given a chance to follow officers’ orders.

Samaria Rice said in an interview at The Associated Press offices in New York that her son, Tamir Rice, was shot before he could comply with police who pulled up next to him on a Cleveland playground. A rookie officer fired within 2 seconds.

Tamir had an airsoft gun, which shoots nonlethal plastic pellets.

Rice said she wants the officer charged with murder and she called on authorities to make sure young officers don’t “ignore the training.”

By MARYCLAIRE DALE and SEAN CARLIN The Associated Press PENNSBURG, Pa. – A man suspected of going to three houses in the Philadelphia suburbs and fatally shooting six people, including his exwife and her teenage niece, was at large, and prosecutors said investigators didn’t know where he was or how he was getting around.

Police recovered the cellphone and car of Bradley William Stone, who had recently been in court fighting with his ex-wife over custody of their two children. SWAT teams surrounded his Pennsburg home Monday and pleaded through a bullhorn for him to surrender, but Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said it was unclear if he was there.

The shooting rampage started before dawn at the home of Stone’s former sis-

ter-in-law in Souderton and ended about 90 minutes later at ex-wife Nicole Stone’s apartment in nearby Harleysville, Ferman said.

Nicole Stone’s sister, Patricia Flick, her sister’s husband, Aaron Flick, and the couple’s 14-year-old daughter, Nina Flick, were killed in the first wave of violence, discovered just before 8 a.m., Ferman said. Their 17-yearold son, Anthony Flick, was pulled from the home with a head wound and was taken in an armored vehicle and then by helicopter to a Philadelphia hospital for treatment.

Nicole Stone’s mother, Joanne Hill, and grandmother Patricia Hill were killed next at their home in nearby Lansdale. Investigators were alerted by a hang-up call to emergency dispatchers, Ferman said.

Nicole Stone’s neighbors at the Pheasant Run Apartments in Harleysville said they were awoken about 5

a.m. by the sounds of breaking glass and gunshots coming from her apartment.

They said they saw Stone fleeing with their two children and alerted authorities.

“She would tell anybody who would listen that he was going to kill her and that she was really afraid for her life,” neighbor Evan Weron said.

The two children Stone took from his ex-wife’s house were safe, Ferman said.

Stone, who’s white, about 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, was likely wearing military fatigues and was known to use a cane or walker, but it’s possible he did not need them, Ferman said.

Harleysville, Lansdale and Souderton are within a few miles of each other. Police with armored vehicles and rifles moved to Pennsburg after spending several hours outside the Souderton home where several victims were found.

Sydney cafe siege ends; 3 dead, including gunman

By KRISTEN GELINEAU The Associated Press SYDNEY – The deadly siege began in the most incongruous of ways, on a sunny Monday morning inside a cheerful cafe in the heart of Australia’s largest city. An Iranian-born gunman burst in, took 17 people hostage, and forced some to hold a flag with an Islamic declaration of faith above the shop window’s festive inscription of “Merry Christmas.”

It ended after midnight with a barrage of gunfire that left two hostages and the gunman dead, four others wounded, and a nation that has long prided itself on its peace rocked to its core.

After waiting 16 hours, police stormed the Lindt Chocolat Cafe early Tuesday when they heard gunfire inside, said New South Wales state police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.

A loud bang rang out, several hostages ran from the building and police swooped in amid heavy gunfire, shouts and flashes. A police bomb disposal robot also was sent into the building, but no explosives were found.

“They made the call because they believed that at that time, if they didn’t enter, there would have been many more lives lost,” Scipione said.

The gunman was identified as 50-year-old Man Haron Monis, who once was prosecuted for sending offensive letters to families of Australian troops killed in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Monis had “a long history of violent crime, infatuation with extremism and mental instability.”

Scipione wouldn’t say whether the two hostages who were killed – a 34-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman – were caught in crossfire, or shot by their captor.

One of the victims was Sydney lawyer and mother-ofthree Katrina Dawson.

“Katrina was one of our best and brightest barristers who will be greatly missed by her colleagues and friends” Jane Needham, president of the New South Wales Bar Association, said in a statement.

The other victim was identified in Australian media as the manager of the cafe, Tori Johnson.

er Catherine Burn said three women were treated in hospital for gunshot wounds and were in stable condition. A police officer was treated for shotgun pellet wounds and discharged, she said.

Burn said another two women were treated for “health and welfare purposes.” Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported that those women were pregnant.

Burn said police do not know what had motivated Monis. She declined to detail his demands.

“This is a man who had serious history of criminal offences and a history of violence. This was a man that we do believe had some extremist views and we also believe that he was unstable,” Burn told reporters.

She confirmed that Monis was free on bail when he died. Police were investigating whether he was the registered owner of the shotgun that he used.

Monis was convicted and sentenced last year to 300 hours of community service for sending what a judge called “grossly offensive” letters to families of soldiers killed in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2009.

Will leave SouthWest Suburban Conference for Southwest Prairie Conference

JOLIET – Joliet Township High School athletes and fans have good reason to be excited.

The Southwest Prairie Conference Board of Control voted Monday to accept Joliet Central and Joliet West into the conference. That will take effect in the 2016-17 school year.

The Southwest Prairie consists of Minooka, Romeoville, Plainfield Central, Plainfield South, Plainfield North, Plainfield East, Oswego and Oswego East. Adding Joliet Central and West will form a 10-team conference.

The Joliet schools are members of the SouthWest Suburban Conference and are founding members of that league.

Most other SWS members are east of the immediate Joliet area.

“From a travel standpoint and a local standpoint, this all makes a lot of sense,” said Chris Olson, Joliet Township director of activities and athletics. “With the improvements to Route 59 and the distance that we will have to travel, this is where we should be.”

The Joliet schools are somewhat larger than most SPC schools, but Olson said that was not a negative.

“The Oswego schools are growing and the Plainfield schools were growing, although that has leveled off now,” he said.

“The big thing is the local element. Kids will be playing against kids they grew up playing with and against. It will be good for our fan base, too. We have not had good attendance at many of our away events in the SouthWest Suburban.”

When rumors circulated that this change was forthcoming, some assumed the opportunity for the Joliet schools to compete on a more-level playing field in

“No, it’s really not about football,” Olson said. “Obviously, we have had struggles competing with some teams in football in the SouthWest Suburban, but I don’t think that had anything to do with this. The travel, that’s what is huge.”

While football schedules have not been set for 2016, playing a round-robin of nine conference games would be ideal and probably will be dis-

cussed, Olson said. “That way, everybody would not have to be searching for games in Week One and Two,” he said.

Coaches at West and Central have met with Olson, “and they’re excited about this, especially from the travel standpoint. We had a good number of fans at the West [football] playoff game at Oswego, and that will be our farthest trip. I absolutely think that will help.

Our kids will get home from road games earlier.”

The SouthWest Suburban bylaws would have allowed the Joliet schools to leave next school year, but Olson said, “We wanted to give them time.

Giving them a year and a half was the right thing to do.”

Before the Southwest Prairie principals voted to admit Joliet Central and West, the SPC athletic directors also voted in favor.

“These are the schools that we play, anyway, when we’re not in conference games,” Ol-

son noted. “They’re often the schools that we go against in regionals and sectionals in various sports – so from that standpoint, it’s attractive.

“It’s almost a perfect match,” Olson added. “We’re very excited, and they’re excited, too. With them playing Joliet schools regularly, they know they will get even better [media] coverage. We also have awesome facilities to offer with the two lighted, turf fields and the field houses at each school.”

GM Emery speaks on Kromer comments

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – Making his first public comments since Bears offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer admitted he was a source for a national media report criticizing quarterback Jay Cutler, general manager Phil Emery called Kromer’s comments “a mistake of human emotion.”

Speaking to WBBM AM 780 before Monday night’s game against the Saints at Soldier Field, Emery said he was angry, frustrated and upset about Kromer’s comments to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport.

“It was a mistake that had person-to-person and person-to-team ramifications, and it was made by a key member of our team,” Emery told the radio station. “At the end of the day, Marc [Trestman] made the decision to let Aaron’s admission and his apology stand and decided to move forward from there, and that’s what we’ve done as a team.”

Kromer, Cutler and Trestman all addressed the matter Friday.

Kromer and Trestman declined for the most part to get into specifics, saying the matter was being handled internally. Neither Emery or chairman George McCaskey spoke about the incident.

interview, Emery said he had to step back from the situation and allow the “emotions of those events to quell down a little bit” in order to decide what was best for the team.

While Emery said being a source for a media story wasn’t uncommon, he didn’t like the way things played out especially considering the struggles the Bears have faced this season. He said the incident had a “negative impact” on the Bears.

Emery also said he respected the way Trestman handled the situation and its aftermath. Players – including Cutler and running back Matt Forte – said Friday they wouldn’t have known about Kromer’s comments without him apologizing in front of a meeting room with the of-

fense. Last week, Trestman declined to indicate whether he was in the room for the apology.

Emery said his decision to allow Trestman to manage the situation is based on how Emery’s contract is set up and on how the Bears are set up, allowing matters to be handled at the lower level first before it becomes one take on by management.

“The venting by a coach and the way it was brought about and the apology was – surprising,” Emery said Monday night. “And, again, that brought a lot of anger. However, we have a lot of system in place to deal with adversity. I trust our system.

It’s a system in which we let emotions subside and we work through the decision process or all the details

that anything would entail, in terms of an issue. It also allows us to treat everybody with respect.”

Emery indicated that Kromer would remain the team’s offensive coordinator for the remaining three games. It’s a decision that Emery said he respects. He joined Trestman in saying the Bears were focused on the final three games of the season.

“A mistake was made; so when you make mistakes, you have to learn from them,” Emery said.

“And if you learn from them, you will grow. You will move in a positive direction. And if we do that as a team, we will earn the trust of our fans and earn the respect of our fans moving forward.”

CHICAGO – The Bears offense followed up a dysfunctional week at Halas Hall – in which the offensive coordinator tearfully apologized to the entire room for making anonymous comments to NFL Network about Jay Cutler – with a performance worthy of further tears from Aaron Kromer.

The Bears went into intermission trailing 14-0 after being held scoreless in the first 30 minutes for the fourth time in the past eight games.

Cutler increased his league-leading takeaway total to 24 by throwing interceptions on Chicago’s first and last drives of the half, adding a third in the third quarter, when the Bears trailed by three touchdowns and had just 114 total yards compared to New Orleans’ 332.

All this came against the NFL’s 31st-ranked defense, coming off a season-high 41 points allowed to a pedestrian Carolina offense.

Cutler’s first interception came on third-and-8, a throw behind Martellus Bennett, who tipped the ball into the waiting hands of Saints cornerback Patrick Robinson. His next two came on downfield pass attempts

to Marquess Wilson and Alshon Jeffery, respectively. Wilson did respond in the second half with his first career touchdown, a one-yarder to halt New Orleans’ shutout bid.

The Bears’ only first-half possession in New Orleans territory included a loss of two yards on a Matt Forte run, then a pair of sacks taken

by Cutler. On the second sack, by Saints outside linebacker Junior Galette, Bears LT Jermon Bushrod’s frustrations temporarily boiled over. He let Galette by with an apparent screen play developing, but Cutler didn’t get rid of the ball, and Bushrod appeared to direct some animated body language in Cutler’s direction.

The Bears actually featured the offensive balance all of Chicago has been pining for, with 12 rushes compared to 14 Cutler dropbacks in the first half. But the result was another half that ended with boos raining down from the sparse Soldier Field crowd, before an ironic fireworks display at halftime provided the lone sparks for the home team.

Hill’s second touchdown, on New Orleans’ second half opening drive, was nearly identical, though Ryan Mundy was also in the area of Jones, as both players appeared torn between covering Hill and fellow tight end Ben Watson.

Third-phase failures: Even on a night when Marc Mariani had several strong kick returns and Pat O’Donnell had arguably his best game as a pro, an embarrassing botched fake punt is what will be remembered most.

Facing fourth-and-3 at their own 39-yard line, the Bears called a direct snap to Danny McCray. The problem – in addition to McCray coming up a yard short of converting – was that Joe DeCamillis’ unit only had 10 men on the field.

Earlier in the half, on a botched Saints field goal attempt, Jared Allen gave New Orleans new life by drawing a holding penalty. But the Saints failed to capitalize on Allen’s miscue.

Lincoln-Way West outlasts Lemont to improve to 8-0

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lincoln-Way West’s girls basketball team remained perfect on the season, although Lemont did its best to try to bring the winning streak to a halt.

The youthful Indians took a one-point lead into the final quarter, but the Warriors regained the lead and were able to maintain it to capture a 6154 nonconference victory.

West (8-0) moved in front for good early in the final quarter when Dani Morgan (25 points) hit a layup and then made a 3-pointer to build a 55-50 advantage.

Emily Atsinger (18 points) added a layup and two free throws to stretch things to 59-53, and Lemont (4-6) was unable to get any closer than four points back after that.

“Lemont is always wellcoached, and they play hard,” Warriors coach Ryan White said. “I thought that they played their rear ends off tonight and gave us everything that we wanted. Anytime that you can go on the road and get a victory, we’ll take it.

“All season, we’ve been able to create turnovers and get the easy baskets; but for

the most part, Lemont handled our pressure pretty well.

We did have stretches where we were able to wear them down a little bit. Any one of six kids can lead us in scoring on a given night. When we’re getting turnovers and knocking shots down, we can be tough to beat.”

Things weren’t looking all that great for West in the early going as the Indians jumped out to a 19-12 lead. But Stephanie McDonald made a layup at the buzzer to spark a West rally that tied the game at 19 early in the second quarter.

West outscored Lemont, 8-3, to give it a 35-31 cushion at the half. But the hosts surged back in front in the third quarter and things stayed tight for most of the remainder of the contest.

“At the end of the first and second quarters, we let them bring the ball the length of the court with less than five seconds and score – and realistically, that was pretty much kind of the difference in the game,” Indians coach Bill Bozue said. “We just need to be able to take care of the ball a little better.

“We started three sophomores and a freshman, so

I think we were just a little nervous. As soon as they get comfortable, they’ll be able to press-break better. The few times that we did that, we had people who were wide open.

We have really good kids who are also real good students and they work hard. They just need to get comfortable on the court.”

Leading the way for the Indians was Ali Kramer, who scored 16 points. Marissa Dyer added 12 points, Emma Bozue tossed in 11 points, Shannon O’Donnell contributed nine points, and Quinn Shereck had seven points.

The Warriors, who close out the 2014 part of their schedule at the Ottawa Holiday Tourney, also received seven points apiece from Deven Bax and Courtney O’Donnell.

“We played as a team, and we toughed it out,” Atsinger said. “We had a lot of energy coming into the second half.

Our 8-0 start has been really exciting. We get along really well, and that shows on the court. Since we’d played with each other last year, we know each other better and know where we’re at as a team. I think that we have a big future.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Flyers women’s basketball team (9-0) defeated Trevecca Nazarene, 96-71, and Cumberland, 75-59, in nonconference victories.

Against Trevecca, Lewis shot a season-high 54.1 percent from the field.

Mariyah Brawner-Henley scored 21 points and had a 7-of-7 performance at the free-throw line. Jamie Johnson pitched in 20 points, six rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal.

Alexus Grayer hit 4 of 7 in 3-pointers to total 19 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Kristin Itschner finished with 11 points.

The Lewis defense recorded nine blocks. Alex Poole had a career-high four blocks.

In the matchup against Cumberland, Grayer and Brawner-Henley each finished with 16 points, while Brawner-Henley also added 10 rebounds. Jess Reinhart finished with 15 points, scoring 11 in the second half.

Lewis honors: Flyers seniors David Pyle, Omar Ramirez and George Thomson were named to the 2014 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer All-Midwest Region Second Team.

Pyle – an All-Great Lakes Valley Conference First Team and Daktronics All-Midwest Region First Team selection – keyed a Flyer defense that held opponents to 0.74 goals a game.

This is the second consecutive season Pyle has been named to the NSCAA All-Midwest Region Second Team.

Goalkeeper Ramirez ranked 10th in the country in save percentage (.831) and 13th overall in goals against average (.696). Ramirez also claimed All-GLVC Second Team accolades.

Lewis (11-5-3) allowed just two scores over its final six matches of the season on its way to a berth in the GLVC semifinals.

Offensively, Thomson topped the Flyers with a career-high nine goals – including three game-winners and 19 points, at forward – His nine goals were the fifth most in the GLVC, while he averaged 0.47 goals a game, good for sixth in the conference.

Strikefest: Kyra Udziela led Lemont to its fourthplace finish in the silver division by bowling the third-highest series score, a 1,309, among 352 players.

Udziela also ranked in the top 25 in high game (24th) by rolling a 238.

The Hawks led most of the way, but never by more than 10 points. After Taj Gibson’s dunk with 1:13 remaining brought the Bulls to 87-84, Horford got loose for a 19-footer on the wing

and knocked it down.

Pau Gasol followed his own miss to make it 8986 with 23.7 seconds left, giving the Bulls one more chance. Jimmy Butler made a huge defensive play, leaping high in the air to stuff a pass from Kyle Korver. The Atlanta player recovered from his miscue, getting his hands on the ball, too, as both players tumbled to the court to force a jump ball.

Butler won the tip, but Paul Millsap snatched the ball away for Atlanta.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ shouldn’t offend anyone

To the Editor: I’m sick and tired of being politically correct. So this year, instead of greeting others with “Happy Holidays,” I’m going to say, “Merry Christmas!”

I’m sure I’m going to offend practically everyone, but no way am I going to apologize.

I have gone out of my way in the past to be tolerant of just about anyone who opposes the “Merry Christmas” greeting. No more.

I think being tolerant of other people’s beliefs is a good thing, but that doesn’t mean I have to apologize for what I believe. The main message of Christmas is one of peace, love and good will. I fail to see how that can be offensive to anyone.

Oh, I forgot to mention the real reason for the holiday – to celebrate the birth of Jesus. And for Americans who know their history, we need to remember that religious freedom was one of the values cherished

by our founding fathers. In our attempt to avoid offending others, we have lost our identity as a nation.

I’m also annoyed by all the alleged holiday songs they play nonstop at the mall and just about everywhere else. “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” is not my idea of a Christmas song. I miss hearing the beautiful Christmas hymns I grew up singing such as “Away in a Manger,” “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World.” But we won’t hear any songs remotely religious in any public location since America does not want to offend anyone.

I totally understand the separation of church and state, but America has gone way overboard in its interpretation. We are so worried about what other people think that we’re afraid to say anything of any importance.

Merry Christmas to all! If I’ve just annoyed you with my greeting, too bad.

Topinka was the state’s most human politician As you already know, Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka passed away last week.

Topinka had a stroke the morning of Dec. 9, but that’s not what killed her. In fact, by the afternoon, she announced she was going to walk to the restroom. Her chief of staff, Nancy Kimme, told her not to try because she was paralyzed on her left side. In mocking defiance, Topinka started kicking her no-longer paralyzed leg.

By early evening, medical staff told Topinka she’d be out of the hospital in a few days and then would need three weeks of rehabilitation. The indestructible Topinka appeared to have won again, just as she did after she fell, broke her hip and badly injured her back after giving a speech in 2012.

The accident slowed her down, but it never stopped her, never silenced her, never broke her spirit, never stopped her from running for re-election.

What finally felled Topinka was completely unexpected. Hours after her speedy

The end came quickly.

In a matter of seconds, we lost not only one of our state’s strongest voices for financial prudence, its most consistently successful female statewide elected official, its most prounion, pro-gay rights Republican, but also its most human politician.

My brother, Doug, met Topinka when he was with me at an event. Doug posted this on his Facebook page the day she died: “She was the first statewide elected official I ever met that I thought, ‘Hey, she’s just a regular person like the rest of us.’”

Judy only talked down to

dunderheads. Everyone else was treated like an old friend, and she just had that way about her that you knew she meant it.

I once had lunch with Judy in her state Senate district. She took me to a local Bohemian place, and I barely got to talk to her. She knew, by name, just about everyone there. People literally lined up to shake her hand and chat with her the entire time we were there. She’d hug them, ask about their children, their aunts, their cousins, mostly by name. And she never lost that smile, even while she was eating.

She often told stories about when she served in the Illinois House during the height of the Equal Rights Amendment debate. Ultraconservative women, she’d humorously recall, would often grab her arm, fall to their knees and pray for her.

What did you do? I asked.

“I let them pray!” the ERA supporter hooted. She thanked them for their prayers and continued on her merry way.

Topinka was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1984, after first building a House constituent services program unlike almost anywhere else. Her phone number always was public, and she would get calls at her home at all hours, once from a constituent with a cat up her tree during the middle of the night. She served not only her own constituents but also those who lived in the neighboring district represented by former Democratic Senate President Phil Rock, who often was too busy with the affairs of state to handle mundane constituent requests.

Born to immigrant parents, Topinka graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

She went on to write a column for the Berwyn Cicero Life newspaper called “Let’s Talk.”

Former Rep. Jack Kubik, who once represented half of Judy’s district, said it was the mostread column in his family’s newspaper. It was all about political stuff that nobody else

was writing about. The two of us were a natural fit.

I first encountered Judy not long after I was hired as Hannah Information’s Statehouse columnist in 1990. She was fascinated by the company’s “new wave” technology and my “alternative” form of journalism, and her Senate office quickly became my second home.

We both were “nobody what nobody sent,” and we reveled in it. Topinka was elected to her first House term over the opposition of the local party bosses. I started writing about Statehouse politics for a little technology startup.

Few would talk to me back then because I wasn’t anybody.

But Judy helped teach me how to be successful in this crazy business. She also taught me to treat strangers and acquaintances like old friends, because one day they could be.

I loved that woman.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – About half of all people have noticeable hemorrhoids by age 50, and they often occur earlier, especially during pregnancies, in weightlifters and in those with frequent constipation or diarrhea who strain during bowel movements.

“It’s a very common problem overall,” Joliet and Morris gastroenterologist Dr. Richard Rotnicki said. “It’s pretty much a function of walking upright, because of gravity.”

It’s such a common problem that Rotnicki said it’s really not a taboo subject for conversation anymore.

And now, he said, there is a new treatment that’s practically painless.

It’s called bipolar radiofrequency hemorrhoidectomy. Rotnicki has used the procedure on patients for about a year and said the results have been very good.

“When they leave, most are painfree,” Rotnicki said of his patients who have received the treatment. “It gives them a 70 to 80 percent decrease in symptoms.”

Rotnicki said the procedure is the most gentle of the hemorrhoid treatments, and it can be done along with a routine colonoscopy in a hospital’s endoscopy suite.

Bonnie Lardi of South Wilmington had the procedure in October and said it was not a bad experience.

“The colonoscopy preparation was the worst, but the procedure was nothing,” Lardi said. “I felt nothing.

I went in on a Friday and was back at work on a Monday.”

Lardi said she hadn’t much discomfort from her hemorrhoids, but she was having bleeding that was becoming more frequent.

“I probably had them before I had my kids,” Lardi said. “I kind of knew they were there, and I just put it off.”

Lardi said she had a bit of bleeding for about a week after the procedure, but that was it. She’s fine now.

Rotnicki described hemorrhoids as essentially varicose veins on the rectum. Those veins and tissues are there to hold stool back, and to cushion the sphincter muscles when people empty their bowels, the American Gastroenterological Association states on its website.

The day embodied the Westside vision – building an extended family through therapy. The idea for the fall fest originated when Westside staff teams received a $500 stipend and a nondescript challenge of “doing something good for our office.”

Dozens of car trunks lined the Joliet clinic parking lot with a variety of themes for the Trunk or Treat. There was a variety of refreshments, from cotton candy and popcorn to desserts to hot chocolate. Other features were Halloween-themed games, prizes, costume contest and prize for best-decorated trunk.

Justin Hafner’s Buzz Lightyear costume won first prize for the costume contest. A close runner-up was Coleman Berg as Indiana Jones. The winner of the trunk contest was the Wizard of OZ theme by Lanie Frankel, Guz Moreno and Sara Ventsias; and the best-dressed of them all was Hazel (Lanie’s dog) as the Cowardly Lion.

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull, which are in front of each ear. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn.

TMJ Disorder occurs when there are problems with the jaw and the muscles in the face that control it.

“Treatment begins with a thorough examination and diagnosis. This will sometimes include a CT scan and MRI of the temporomandibular joint in the opened and closed position,” advises Dr. David Rubis, General Dentist.

An injury to the jaw, the joint, or the muscles of the head and neck, according to webmd.com, can lead to the disorder. Other possible causes include grinding or clenching the teeth, arthritis in the joint, and stress, which can cause tightening of the facial and jaw muscles.

TMJ disorder often causes severe discomfort and pain. It can be temporary, or can last for many years. It’s possible to affect one or both sides of the face. It’s more common in wom-

en, and among people aged 20 to 40.

Webmd.com states various common symptoms of TMJ Disorder: • Pain or tenderness in the face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when chewing, speaking, or opening the mouth wide • Jaws that get stuck, or “lock” in the open- or closedmouth position • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when moving the jaw joint.

• A tired feeling in the face • Trouble chewing, or a strange feeling as if the upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly • Facial swelling • Toothaches, headaches, neck aches, dizziness, earaches, hearing problems, upper shoulder pain, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

A good bridge player can advance his score if he wins 10 tricks when playing in a four-level contract – as South is in today’s deal.

How should South plan the play in four hearts after West leads a trump?

Declarer must assume trumps are 3-2 -- and a low-trump lead almost always means that they will be. With losers in spades, hearts and diamonds, it looks like South needs the club finesse to work -- but, as we shall see, that is a mirage.

The simple – and here unsuccessful – approach is to win the first trick, cross to dummy’s diamond king and run the club queen. However, West wins with his king and returns his remaining trump. Declarer can take the trick, cash his diamond ace and two club winners (discarding a diamond from dummy), and ruff a diamond in the dummy. East, though, calmly discards a spade. When South continues with the ace and another spade, East takes the trick, cashes his high trump and leads a black-suit winner. Declarer ruffs, but West wins the last trick with his high diamond for down one.

Instead, South should go for these 10 tricks: one spade, three hearts (the ace, king and a long trump), two diamonds, two clubs and two ruffs. At trick two, declarer should play a spade to, say, dummy’s jack. East wins and leads another trump, but South takes the trick, plays a spade to dummy’s ace, ruffs a spade, returns to dummy with a diamond, ruffs the last spade and concedes a club. He must fashion those 10 tricks.

can provide pain relief, improve function and realign the joint of your hand if needed. Splints come in a wide range of materials and forms.

• EXERCISES AND JOINT PROTECTION. An occupational therapist (OT) can recommend devices that can help if your hand has lost some strength or function. Examples include long-handed grippers, electric can openers or doorknob turners. An OT can also suggest exercises to improve your function.

(I’ve put an illustration on my website, askdoctork. com, of an exercise that may help to improve rangeof-motion in your hands.)

When possible, try to move your hand when you’re feeling less pain or are pain-free, and rest it when pain intensifies.

• PARAFFIN WAX BATH AND HEAT TREATMENTS. Sometimes therapists recommend a warm paraffin wax bath to temporarily relieve symptoms of hand osteoarthritis. You dip your hands into wax melted in an electric appliance that maintains a safe temperature.

After the wax hardens, the therapist wraps the treated area in a plastic sheet and blanket to retain the heat.

Treatments take about 20 minutes, after which the wax is peeled off. Paraffin bath kits are also available for home use.

If these non-drug treatments don’t give you sufficient relief, consider over-the-counter pain medicines. Particularly if hand pain is reducing the amount of time you can spend at something you love – like gardening or playing the piano – take action. Above all, don’t just do nothing!

Could you recommend some drug-free treatments to relieve the pain?

Dear Reader: Osteoarthritis causes stiffness and pain in the joints. It develops when cartilage – the connective tissue that covers the ends of bones – deteriorates. In a joint, the ends of two or more bones come together. The softer and more flexible cartilage that covers the ends of the bones acts as a cushion. If the cartilage were not there, the hard bones would grind against each other.

Over time, the space between bones narrows and the surfaces of the bones change shape. This can eventually damage the joint. In the hand, the most common places for osteoarthritis are the joint at the base of the thumb and the last joints before the tip of the fingers.

Here are some non-drug treatments you can try instead of, or in addition to, more traditional treatments: • HEAT. Moist heat can help raise your pain threshold and decrease muscle spasms. Simply apply a warm, moist towel to your sore joint. You can also buy gel packs that can be warmed up in the microwave.

• TOPICAL TREATMENTS. Many topical creams and gels, such as Bengay and Aspercreme, can be rubbed directly onto affected joints to temporarily reduce inflammation and pain.

These products often contain salicylate, a relative of aspirin, plus menthol or eucalyptus. Creams and lotions containing capsaicin (an extract of pepper) can also help relieve pain.

The capsaicin produces a slightly unpleasant sensation that “distracts” the brain from paying attention to the pain signals from your arthritic joint. You need to use these products several times a day, because their effects are temporary.
