The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – A former Illinois National Guard soldier who trained at the Joliet armory pleaded guilty Monday to charges he conspired to provide material support to the Islamic State group.

Hasan Edmonds, 23, of Aurora pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

The pleas in Chicago federal court came one week after

travel to the Middle East and join Islamic State fighters overseas. After dropping his cousin off at Midway International Airport in March, Jonas Edmonds went to Hasan Edmonds’ home and collected several National Guard uniforms that he planned to wear as a disguise during a planned attack at the Joliet armory where Hasan Edmonds trained, the plea agreement said.

Hasan Edmonds was member of Company G 634th Brigade Support Battalion, based in Joliet, according to the Illinois National Guard. He re-

ported to the Joliet base one weekend a month.

Agents with the Chicago FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Hasan Edmonds before he could board his flight and arrested Jonas Edmonds at his home a short time later.

Charges alleged the armory attack was planned to kill as many as 150 people.

Hasan Edmonds is to be sentenced March 18 and faces up to 30 years in prison. Jonas Edmonds is to be sentenced Jan. 27 and faces up to 23 years in prison.

Both men are U.S. citizens.

Frankfort Township man gets 70 years for ’09 murder

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Frankfort Township man was sentenced Monday to 70 years in prison for a 2009 murder.

Brian Trainauskas, 40, maintained his innocence in the killing of Monica Timar to Judge Dave Carlson, who found him guilty during a bench trial earlier this year.

Brian “I did not Trainauskas murder her. I’m terribly sorry for your loss,” Trainauskas told Timar’s family members in the courtroom Monday during the hearing at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet. “Monica and I were very good friends and I would never have harmed her.”

Timar disappeared Jan. 20, 2009, and her body was found three days later in the trunk of her Ford Mustang in the 21000 block of South 78th Avenue in Frankfort Township.

“The saddest thing I ever had to do in my life was go to my 76-year-old father’s house that cold ... morning when they found her body and tell my father that his daughter was dead,” Timar’s sister, Michelle Minnick, testified. “My father lived his last six years in complete sadness.”

The defense claimed while Trainauskas allowed his friend access to his home, he was not responsible for the despondent woman’s death. But according to trial testimony, her blood was found in his house and inside the barrel of a shotgun he sold to a friend the day before Timar’s body was discovered.

“The Will County sheriff did not investigate the facts behind Monica’s death. There were so many things done wrong in this case and an innocent man will be sentenced for the rest of his life,” Trainauskas said Monday.

inadmissible. While being held in the Will County jail, Trainauskas allegedly offered another inmate, Samuel Wright, $100,000 to kill his prosecutor, former Will County assistant state’s attorney Nicole Moore and then a random man who could be framed for killing both Moore and Timar.

“We called [Moore] ‘Olive Oyl’ and the man would be ‘Elmer Fudd,’ ” Wright testified Monday.

Wright, who has had 21 felony convictions since 1981, said he told his attorney about Trainauskas’ offer and agreed to wear a wire for investigators because he took Trainauskas “very seriously.”

“I didn’t want this girl to be killed [and] I didn’t want it on my conscience if she was,” Wright testified.

As the next witness testified, Carlson stopped proceedings to notify attorneys Wright had given the bailiff a note written on a washroom paper towel asking the judge to make sure Wright was sent back to Centralia Correctional Center

before Trainauskas was transferred from jail to prison.

Prosecutor Dan Walsh called Trainauskas’ alleged solicitation of Moore’s murder – which was referenced repeatedly during the sentencing for Timar’s murder – “the epitome of evil.”

“The idea that someone would participate in conversation [about hiring Wright] raises questions about any mitigation for ... Trainauskas,” Carlson said.

Trainauskas was sentenced to 65 years in prison for Timar’s murder and a consecutive fiveyear sentence for concealing a homicide. He asked the judge to request he be incarcerated in a prison where he can be treated for polycythemia vera, a bone marrow cancer.

Two courthouse sources said it’s unlikely the Attorney General’s office will continue prosecuting Trainauskas on the solicitation of murder case if the sentence Carlson issued Monday stands. Trainauskas would first be eligible for release in 2078.

ONLINE HOLIDAY SHOPPING Area online businesses talk being digital as marketplace option grows

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com The holiday season no longer necessarily means a trip to the mall to buy gifts, as digital retailers gain increasing relevance in the holiday shopping game.

But for Christy Platt, a Minooka resident who runs Live Bright Designs, the season is a slow time. The majority of what Platt does for her business is designing invitations for events, such as weddings, birthdays, graduations and holidays.

She receives Christmas card orders during the holiday season, but there’s a slowdown in orders for wedding

and birthday invitations.

“People are so busy and focused on the holidays,” she said.

By contrast, the holiday season means more buying activity for Shorewood Liquidators, a wholesale and supply store, said Michael Ringelsten, president of the company.

“Everyone is getting deals and merchandise, so I can’t complain,” he said.

More people are expected to shop online this year. Nearly half of holiday shopping – including browsing and buying – will be done online, according to a National Retail Federation survey.

The survey found about 46

percent of holiday shopping will be done online, which is about a 2 percent increase from last year and the highest recorded since the NRF first asked the question in 2006, according to the organization.

The holiday season is the biggest time of the year for all kinds of retailers and can account for as much as 30 percent of a retailers’ annual sales, according to the NRF. Nationwide, holiday retail sales are expected to surge above last year, which brought in about $600 billion.

Running an online business has its advantages and disadvantages for Live Bright Designs and Shorewood Liquidators.

Although it is an online business, Ringelsten stores his items for auction or sale in two warehouses. Shorewood Liquidators typically sells items returned from retailers, such as The Home Depot or Sears.

Ringelsten said having an online business allows him to attract more interest and widen his customer base.

But an online business doesn’t have the face-to-face interaction that comes with a physical location, he said.

“It’s not as personal as brick and mortar. We do our best to do customer service,” Ringelsten said.

Platt said she enjoys the creative aspect of what she

does for Live Bright Designs, which she runs through Etsy.

She works out of her home and she partners with a professional lab that does prints.

Running the business doesn’t feel like a job, she said.

“It’s wonderful. I can make my own hours, and the biggest thing I wanted to do is stay home with my children,” she said.

With her online business, she can pick up her children from school or volunteer for their field trips while still helping out her husband financially, Platt said.

“I’m doing this because it’s something I love to do,” she said.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City Manager Jim Hock is digging deeper into reserve funds and making no new cuts while dropping a property tax hike from the proposed 2016 budget.

A special City Council meeting on the budget Monday included a confrontation between Councilman Larry Hug, who is alone in calling for reduced funding for the Rialto Square Theatre, and the theater’s general manager.

Hock’s budget adjustments did not reduce the city’s $600,000 annual stipend to the Rialto.

His budget proposal no longer includes a 5 percent property tax hike, which was resisted

by Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and some council members.

Hock said that he’s using less money out of reserves than the $8.7 million used to balance the 2015 budget. The city also used $15 million in reserve funds to buy the Evergreen Terrace housing project after condemning it in court.

Hock said the city can generate an additional $530,000 while keeping the tax rate the

same.

Councilman Michael Turk noted that people should realize that means their property taxes can go up if the assessed

Defending his previous suggestion that the Rialto could cover the $600,000 that the city now gives the theater by raising ticket prices, Hug said to Green, “I didn’t give specifics because I’m not paid $140,000 a year to run the Rialto. You are.”

Hug accused Green of falsely portraying the Rialto as “an economic engine” for downtown and pointed to the numbers of restaurants changing hands or closing down.

Green and Hug differed over the validity of a 2012 study that concluded the Rialto generated $7.5 million a year for the community by bringing people to shows.

Green said the Rialto needs a dedicated funding source,

such as a hotel/motel tax that once went to the theater, and said, “I would do whatever I can to find a dedicated funding source that will continue to support the Rialto.”

What’s next?

The $289 million budget will go to a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

A couple of council members suggested line-item votes on the budget.

Turk said certain controversial items might be separated for votes, including the closing of Fire Station No. 3 and outsourcing the city’s legal work.

O’Dekirk asked Fire Chief Joseph Formhals if any progress is being made in union contract negotiations to avert the closing of the fire station.

Shutting down the station is expected to save the city $1.2 million in overtime costs because of contracted manning requirements for equipment.

“We’ve had some dialog with both unions, but at this point we haven’t been able to come up with an agreement,” Formhals said.

Temporary measures lead to drop in Meadow Lane traffic speeds

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A trial run of traffic calming measures has noticeably reduced motorists’ speed on Meadow Lane, leading Plainfield trustees to continue moving ahead with the village’s Complete Streets policy Monday.

Residents near Meadow Lane, a north-south four-mile road west of Route 59 starting at 127th Street and stretching south of Lockport Street, have complained that drivers unsafely speed down the road.

The village decided to use the northern part of the road, in the Tuttle Estates subdivi-

sion, to test out traffic calming measures that it could apply to other roads as well.

The village board adopted a plan called “Complete Streets” in March to provide a framework for addressing the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and cars on a street.

The traffic calming measures resulted in average speed drops of up to 6 mph.

“Meadow Lane has been an issue for us for six or seven years,” Trustee Bill Lamb said, “There’s speeding down there. We hear them talk about it. This is the first time we’ve had concrete numbers and a thorough study.”

canes – road-narrowing zones – were installed along the stretch of Meadow Lane from 127th Street to Pavilion Place.

A temporary traffic circle was installed at the intersection with Pastoral Drive, a corner where residents have said motorists occasionally run stop signs, and temporary curb extensions were placed at the intersection with Pavilion Place.

The traffic circle led to drops in average speed between 3 and 6 mph. The curb extensions saw reductions of up to 2 mph.

“The main goal of the curb extensions is to bring more visibility to the stop sign,” Village Engineer Scott Threewitt

said. “We did have more concerns about cars not stopping.

It’s not to reduce speed, but provide more visibility.”

Northbound Meadow Lane north of the traffic circle experienced the highest average speed drop. Before the trial, cars traveled at an average 31 mph. But that dropped to 25 mph. Southbound Meadow Lane at the same location dropped from 29 mph to 25 mph.

South of the traffic circle, northbound speed dropped from 29 mph to 25 mph, and southbound speed dropped from 29 mph to 26 mph. South of the curb extensions, northbound speed dropped from 29 mph to 27 mph, and south-

bound speed stayed at 27 mph.

“Six miles an hour is not insignificant,” said Trustee Brian Wojowski, adding that he has seen a difference, living near Meadow Lane.

Wojowski said the temporary neon traffic markings weren’t aesthetically pleasing.

But Threewitt said there may be other options to the neon pylons.

Going forward, Village Administrator Brian Murphy said the village plans to test the temporary measures further south on Meadow Land and at other locations, and discuss how to include permanent solutions in the capital budget.

Garbage rates going up if council approves hike

Note to readers: Information in Police Reports is obtained from local police departments and the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Manager Jim Hock’s memo to the council on the garbage rates.

Hock said in the memo that the rate increase would be equal to the fees being charged by Waste Management through its current contract with the city, which runs to the end of 2017.

The proposed ordinance also includes: • A 10 percent late charge on delinquent bills that are not paid within 15 days of the due date, along with provisions for waiving that charge.

• A new $80 reinstatement fee for customers who want to re-establish waste collection after it has been terminated.

• A new $60 deposit for residential customers who want waste collection without city water or sewer service.

• Steven McIntosh, 55, of the 500 block of Ruby Street in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police Thursday on charges of domestic battery and interfering with reporting domestic violence.

• Dwight Swarn, 31, of the 300 block of East Washington Street in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police Thursday on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

• Alfred L. Coleman, 53, of the 600 block of Kungs Way in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police Friday on a charge of auto theft.

• Thomas J. Donegan, 43, of the 8300 block of South Nashville Avenue in Burbank, was arrested

by New Lenox police Friday on charges of driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Residents would pay more for garbage and recycling pickup next month under a rate increase that goes to the Joliet City Council for a vote Tuesday.

Rates would go up by less than a dollar in each of the next two years after having been frozen since 2010, according to a memo and ordinance describing the proposed increases.

Residents now paying $23.42 a month would pay $24.30 in 2016 and $25.20 in 2017, according to the ordinance.

Seniors who get a discounted rate would see it go from $18 a month now to $18.60 in 2016 and $19.20 in 2017.

“The current rate for municipal waste was approved in 2007 and has not changed since 2010,” according to City

hike Nov. 30 when he first presented the 2016 budget.

The garbage rates have received little attention, unlike a proposed property tax hike opposed by Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and some council members and an increase in the real estate transfer tax that has faced opposition from Realtors.

A public hearing on the proposed real estate transfer tax hike is scheduled for Tuesday, when the council also is expected to vote on whether to place it on the March 15 ballot. The tax, which would go from the current rate of $3 per $1,000 to $5 per $1,000, would have to be approved by referendum to go into effect.

A council memo compares the proposed $5 per $1,000 rate with the rates in other municipalities, including: Aurora, $3; Naperville, $3; Bolingbrook, $7.50; Channahon, $3 and Romeoville, $3.50.

Refuse collection during the holidays SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – Garbage and recycling collection will be delayed one day for Joliet residents with Friday collection because of the Christmas and New Year’s Day holiday.

All residents who have garbage and recycling pickup scheduled on Fridays will have service Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.

The normal every-other week recycling schedule will be observed. The normal collection schedule will resume the week of Jan. 4.

City Hall will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. On those days, the parking decks will be free, and there will be no enforce-

ment of the parking meters.

For those who will have a real Christmas tree, set it out, in one piece, if it’s 5 feet in length or less, and cut in half, if it measures more than 5 feet tall, after Christmas at your normal pickup location (curb or alley) on your regular trash day for pickup. Christmas trees will be collected until Jan. 29.

The program provides up-tothe-minute Emergency Alerts from the Joliet Police and Fire Departments regarding immediate or pending threats to public safety or property where

immediate notification is necessary. Examples would be evacuation notices, boil orders, parking bans, street closures, water main breaks, annual fire hydrant testing and crime alerts.

Gegenheimer chosen as interim superintendent for School District 54

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Elementary School district 54 board meeting was run Monday night by District Principal Chris Maier in the absence of a superintendent.

Superintendent Teri Shaw submitted her letter of resignation last week, and it was effective at the end of the business day the Monday before the regular December board meeting started.

In regards to her resignation, the board handed out a news release stating that Shaw’s leaving was by mutual agreement.

“On Dec. 14, 2015, by mutual agreement and settlement, the Board of Education of Morris Elementary School District 54 and Superintendent Teri L. Shaw decided to end their seven-year, eight-month contractual relationship effective Dec. 31, 2015,” the release stated.

Shaw, who was not present at the meeting, declined to state a reason for her resignation when contacted Friday. She did say she is working on a book

and, because of publishing timelines, she would use her time to finish the book.

Board President Jerry White referred to the news release for the board’s comment, which stated: “The Board of Education acknowledges that during the superintendent’s tenure, she cooperated and collaborated with stakeholders within the district and in neighboring districts to improve the district’s educational programs and financial stability.”

It goes on to state: “In turn, the superintendent would like to thank and commend the

past and present community members, parents, board of education, administration, staff and students for maximizing the success of the students of School District No. 54.”

The board unanimously approved accepting Shaw’s resignation.

A discussion was had before a vote to approve a contract with Illinois Association of School Boards for $7,400 to help the district find a superintendent to fill the position.

“I disagree with this contract. We should look at private firms, as well,” board member Joannie Johnston said. “With the history of this district, we should spend quality time searching.”

The board voted, 6-1, to approve using IASB for the search, with Johnston voting no.

The board also unanimously voted to approve an interim superintendent agreement with Al Gegenheimer, who retired in June as superintendent of Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201, at a cost of $500 a day for 90 days.

New Lenox man pleads guilty to defrauding investor SHAW MEDIA ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Thomas A. Kopec of New Lenox pleaded guilty last week to wire fraud for cheating a Panamanian investor out of $500,000.

In a statement of facts filed with the plea agreement, Kopec, 48, admitted to soliciting $500,000 from the victim for a

purported investment vehicle for purchasing securities and acquiring a bank, according to a news release from the FBI. Kopec spent the money on personal and other expenses at retail establishments. Kopec started the scheme in Illinois, but relocated it to the Eastern District of Virginia, and caused

the issuance of interstate wires originating in the Eastern District of Virginia in order to obtain and misappropriate the victim’s money, according to the news release.

Kopec was indicted June 5, 2014, by a federal grand jury.

Kopec faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison when sentenced March 4.

JOLIET – While statewide casino revenue continues on the decline, the latest yearto-date figures for 2015 show Hollywood Casino in Joliet is among the few establishments raking in more money this year compared with last.

Hollywood Casino brought in $115.9 million in adjusted gross receipts between January and November, compared to $112.2 million during that same 11-month period in 2014, according to figures released earlier this month by the Illinois Gaming Board.

The local casino also did well last month, bringing in $9.5 million in adjusted gross receipts. That’s up from $9 million gained in November 2014.

On the other hand, Harrah’s Casino in Joliet has brought in $170.8 million between January and November – down from $181.5 million in adjusted gross receipts during that same 11-month period in 2014.

Joliet businesses with video gaming machines brought in about $942,082 in November, while the city’s revenue share this past month was $47,096. In all, Joliet has 70 establishments with 264 gaming terminals.

Some of the biggest moneymakers in Joliet last month were two of Blackhawk Restaurant Group LLC’s locations, McBride’s Pub Inc., WSB Inc., Double J Sports Bar, Izzy’s Bar and Lenny’s Route 66 Fuel Stop.

CHICAGO – A Chicago firefighter who once worked in Lemont died early Monday after falling two stories down an elevator shaft while fighting a smoky blaze in a warehouse on Chicago’s South Side.

Firefighter Daniel Capuano, 42, was searching for the source of the blaze on the second floor, but he couldn’t see because of heavy smoke and fell down the shaft to the basement, Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Jose Santiago said.

“As the firefighters went in there they saw some holes throughout the floor,” Santiago said. “They gave out an emergency alert, ‘Be careful.’

It looks like firefighter Daniel had just walked into the elevator shaft as he was searching, couldn’t see and fell.”

Other firefighters quickly reached Capuano, a father of three, and got him to an ambulance, Santiago said.

Capuano was pronounced dead at 4:25 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

“This is devastating to the family,” Santiago said.

The Chicago Tribune reported that before joining the Chicago Fire Department, Capuano worked in Lemont as a firefighter and paramedic. He started there in 1997 and worked there until 2001,

according to the Tribune article.

Lemont Battalion Chief Timothy Oslakovich told the Tribune he couldn’t believe the news that Capuano had died.

“We were all like, ‘It can’t be.’ ... I got a chill down my back, and I can honestly say I’ve never had that before,” Oslakovich was quoted as saying in the Tribune article.

Capuano, a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department, was assigned to

Officer acquitted of putting gun in suspect’s mouth

CHICAGO – A county judge Monday acquitted a Chicago police commander accused of shoving his gun down a suspect’s throat, outlining what she said were flaws in the state’s case and stressing it shouldn’t be conflated with other recent incidents of alleged police misconduct in the city and elsewhere.

Meanwhile, a federal judge ruled in a separate civil case that an officer used excessive force by dragging a handcuffed man from his jail cell after he had been subdued with stun guns. Video of the 2012 incident was among several released in the recent weeks amid heavy criticism of the Chicago Police Department’s treatment of minorities, particularly blacks.

Chicago teachers authorize strike

CHICAGO – Lawmakers from the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus say the state’s budget stalemate is having a big impact on the black population as youths miss out on financial aid for colleges and after-school programs.

The group called at a Monday news conference for an end to the standoff between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders so those programs can continue. Black legislative leaders say they’ve prepared a report to be released later highlighting

CHICAGO – Chicago Teachers Union members overwhelmingly voted to authorize their leaders to call a strike, although a final decision on a walkout would be months away, the union said Monday.

He came back home to Joliet after the war where he was a lifelong resident and met his lovely wife Kathryn and they were married in 1950. He worked for Weber Dairy for 35 years during the early morning hours delivering milk throughout the Joliet and surrounding areas. He also loved his time at Wunderlich Granite Company and then Olson/Troost Memorials into his early 80’s, as Sales Manager.

He dedicated many years of service as a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Family Church. Hank also loved the

Chicago Cubs and was a lifelong member of the Old Timers Baseball Association, VFW 367 Cantigny Post #367, Joliet Rivals Club, and the Joliet Moose 300 Club. Hank’s number one love was his wife of 65 years, Kay, and his entire family. His friends knew him for his friendly and caring personality and his willingness to help anyone in need. He spent many a weekend at the Braidwood Recreation Club with his family enjoying life. He was an avid golfer, bowler, cribbage player, and loved playing poker with Norm Stoiber and friends on Fridays, even up to his last day. Henry was a husband, father, brother, friend, and the corner stone of our family and will be deeply missed.

Woman sentenced with husband for grant fraud

SPRINGFIELD – A Chicago woman has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for her role in stealing millions of dollars in state grant funds.

U.S. District Judge Richard Mills imposed the sentence on Karin Dingle on Monday after sentencing her husband, Leon Dingle Jr., to six years in the case.

The 76-year-old Karin Dingle was convicted last December on six counts of conspiracy, mail fraud and money laundering.

Prosecutors said she and her husband pocketed at least $2.9 million of more than $9.6 million

or the Veterans Administration in his name would be greatly appreciated.

Justices reject newspaper’s bid to end officers’ lawsuit

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from the Chicago Sun-Times that sought to block a lawsuit from police officers over the newspaper’s coverage of a case involving the nephew of Chicago’s former mayor.

The justices did not comment Monday in allowing the lawsuit to proceed over whether the newspaper violated the privacy of the officers by publishing identifying information about them from state driver license records. The officers contend publishing the information violates a federal law intended to protect driver license data.

The article used the information to suggest the police put together a lineup that made it unlikely that the nephew of former Mayor Richard M. Daley would be selected. Daley nephew Richard Vanecko eventually pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the 2004 death of David Koschman.

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is reviewing procedures for vetting would-be immigrants, with an eye toward examining applicants’ online presence, to close security gaps in the U.S. visa system, the White House said Monday.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the Homeland Security and State departments have been asked to review the process for screening people who apply for visas and to return with specific recommendations.

The Homeland Security Department said it specifically is reviewing policies on when authorities at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services can look at social media posts as part of the vetting process for would-be immigrants applying for certain visas.

“I think the president’s top priority here is the national security and safety of the American people,” Earnest said. “And that will continue to be the case with ensuring that this K-1 visa program is effectively implemented.”

Report on slave-peeled shrimp spurs boycott

NEW YORK – U.S. officials and human rights activists called on Americans to stop buying fish and shrimp tied to supply chains in Thailand, where The Associated Press has found slaves are forced to work in the seafood industry.

“All of us may find ourselves eating a slave made product without knowing it, but once we know it, we all have a moral

obligation, I believe, to make a personal decision to boycott it,” said New Jersey Republican Congressman Chris Smith, a member of the House Foreign Relations Committee.

The AP reported Monday it found enslaved workers who were forced to peel shrimp in Thailand for up to 16 hours a day for little or no pay, and many were locked inside for months or even years on end. Journalists followed trucks from an abusive factory to major Thai distributors.

U.S. customs records show the shrimp made its way into the supply chains of major U.S. food stores, retailers and restaurants.

Egypt’s finding on jet crash conflicts with others CAIRO – Egypt said Monday it has not yet found any sign of terrorism in the deadly Oct. 31 crash of a Russian passenger jet in the Sinai desert, a preliminary finding that conflicts with Russian, U.S. and British statements that they believed a bomb on the aircraft probably was to blame.

Poll: Americans want to get tougher with the Islamic State

By KEN DILANIAN and EMILY SWANSON The Associated Press WASHINGTON – After terrorist attacks at home and abroad, more Americans than ever – but still less than half – support sending U.S. ground troops to fight the Islamic State, according to a new Associated PressGfK Poll. A large majority also want a clearer explanation from President Barack Obama about his strategy to defeat the group.

The percentage of Americans who favor deploying U.S. troops to fight IS militants has risen from 31 percent to 42 percent during the past year in AP-GfK polling, although it isn’t clear whether those respondents favor a small contingent or a larger ground force that might engage in another protracted Middle Eastern war. Other national surveys in recent weeks have found similar or greater support for American ground troops.

Obama recently dispatched

about 50 special operations forces to coordinate the fight in Syria, adding to the more than 3,000 troops already in Iraq. But he and most other politicians oppose sending a large American contingent to augment the U.S.-led coalition air campaign. Most Republicans running for president have not called for that, either, although Donald Trump recently said he would support 10,000 troops, a figure originally floated by South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton has pledged to keep American troops out of Syria, saying she would resist sending forces to fight Islamic militants even if there’s another terrorist attack within the U.S. In the poll, 56 percent of Americans said the U.S. military response to the Islamic State group has not gone far enough, up from 46 percent since October 2014.

There also is widespread unease about Obama’s strategy, which envisions a long, slow campaign of airstrikes, diplomacy, training, financial sanctions and other measures.

White House officials said Obama recognizes the need to make the case for his strategy. The president gave an Oval Office speech last week, visited the Pentagon Monday and is expected to visit a counterterrorism facility later in the week.

But Obama pointedly has made the case against a U.S. ground invasion. The U.S. military could clear the Islamic State from its headquarters in Raqqa, Syria, but IS troops would return unless a local ground force was available to keep order, he said Nov. 16, after the attacks in Paris.

By JULIET LINDERMAN and BRIAN WITTE The Associated Press BALTIMORE – Jurors wrestled over what “evil motive” means Monday as they deliberated the fate of the first of six officers to be tried in the death of Freddie Gray, a black man whose neck was broken in a police van, fueling the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

The panel also puzzled over the meaning of “bad faith” and other terms the judge said they must use to decide whether Officer William Porter is guilty of misconduct in office, the least of the charges against him. Porter also is accused of manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment, and he faces up to about 25 years in prison if convicted of them all.

Bergdahl set to face desertion charge in general court-martial The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was held captive by the Taliban for five years and freed in exchange for five detainees in Guantanamo Bay, will face charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy in a general court-martial, the Army announced Monday.

If convicted, Bergdahl could get life in prison on the misbehavior charge and up to five years for desertion. He also could be dishonorably discharged, reduced in rank and made to forfeit all pay.

Bergdahl, 29, of Hailey, Idaho, walked off his post in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktika province on June 30, 2009.

He was released in the prisoner swap in late May 2014 that touched off a firestorm of criticism, with some in Congress accusing President Barack Obama of jeopardizing the safety of a nation for a deserter.

A date for an arraignment hearing at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, will be announced later.

Bergdahl’s attorney, Eugene Fidell, said the convening authority – a high-ranking officer charged with deciding whether evidence warrants a court-martial – did not follow the advice of a preliminary hearing officer.

Lt. Col. Mark Visger had recommended that Bergdahl’s case be referred to a special court martial, which is a misdemeanor-level forum.

That limits the maximum punishment to reduction in rank, a bad-conduct discharge and a term of up to a year in prison.

The U.S. Army Forces Command charged Bergdahl on March 25 with “desertion with intent to shirk important or hazardous duty” and “misbehavior before the enemy by endangering the safety of a command, unit or place.”

LYNWOOD, Calif. – When deputies confronted a man carrying a handgun in a Los Angeles suburb, the fatal shooting that unfolded was notably different from other recent flashpoints in the debate over police use of force: The suspect was armed and in an area crowded with people.

Friends and relatives of Nicholas Robertson quickly questioned the police tactics that led to his death, particularly why officers fired at a person who apparently was moving away from them and why they kept firing even after he crumpled to the ground.

But law enforcement professionals said Monday the shooting did not immediately appear to share much, if anything, in common with other police shootings that have resulted in criminal charges against officers.

Robertson was killed by officers Saturday after witnesses reported seeing a man firing

a handgun into the air six or seven times and briefly going inside a car wash and a pizza parlor.

Video of the shooting, released by the sheriff’s department the next day, showed deputies firing at Robertson more than 30 times. In a close-up image, he can be seen stretched out on the pavement holding a gun.

Deputies first spotted him in front of a gas station in the south Los Angeles County suburb of Lynwood, where two women and three children were inside a car. They ordered him to drop the weapon, authorities said.

Robertson refused and at one point pointed the gun in the deputies’ direction, according to police.

Madigan needs to be more aware of Rauner’s strategies One of the concepts used so effectively by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign last year was what are called “OODA Loops.” I’m going to oversimplify because of space, but the idea – developed by a military strategist and adopted by business leaders – is to essentially introduce rapid changes to a battle with the intent of disorienting an opponent and forcing over- and under-reactions. And then do it again and again to exhaust and eventually defeat the other side.

OODA Loops transcend traditional “rapid response.”

They’re quick, forceful reactions specifically designed to force repeated mistakes by the other side. The Rauner campaign used those loops to literally run circles around former Gov. Pat Quinn last year.

They’ve also used the loops since the campaign ended.

For instance, when Rep. John Bradley, D-Marion, attempted to hold legislative hearings on how the administration was hiding gubernatorial payrollers, they didn’t bow down as others had in the past.

with snark-filled invective and caught him off guard, forcing multiple and escalating angry responses that made him look a bit pompous and, according to the Rauner folks, out of touch.

They did it again last week.

For months now, Rauner and his top people have been saying that Democratic leaders ought to offer up a specific tax increase plan. The Republicans have laid out what they want from the long governmental impasse (Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda, which includes major attacks on organized labor). So, the Rauner folks say, it’s time for the Democrats to do the same. What do they want?

Staying silent or being vague about specific numbers has allowed the Democrats to stake out some high ground and avoid attacks on their rank-and-file members. Obviously, more revenue is needed.

But it becomes far more real to the public when there’s a number attached. Hence, the effort to force the Democrats to be specific.

And then the next day the Illinois Republican Party launched attacks on some of Madigan’s members, asking rhetorically if those members would “stand with taxpayers, or will they stand with #TaxHikeMike?”

The Rauner folks “won” the day, and “Speaker Madigan’s 33 percent tax hike plan” will help them win more, which is what this is about. Win more days, and you further exhaust the other side. More exhaustion leads to more mistakes.

Enough mistakes, and the opponent is so disadvantaged that it eventually has no choice but to surrender.

Surrender, of course, is not in Madigan’s vocabulary these days. But he needs to be much more aware of what’s being done to him.

Lockport pushes its way past Joliet Central

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Revenge is best served at home, according to Lockport’s girls basketball team.

The Porters trailed, 4-0, at the beginning of Monday’s SouthWest Suburban Blue game against Joliet Central, but high energy and fastpaced play helped Lockport dominate, 68-35.

“Last year, they were our rival, and they would always beat us,” Kianna Campbell said. “We lost both games last year, and we were winning by probably 20 points in both games. The fourth quarter would come, and they had more intensity than we did, and they would beat us by maybe two or three points.

This felt really good to keep the lead by 30 or more.”

“In the locker room at halftime, coach kept saying, ‘You have to keep the intensity.

You can’t let them come back up like they have before,’ ” Laurel Kucharski said. “I don’t think we let our intensity down.”

That intensity helped Lockport (5-3, 2-0) look impressive across the board.

Whether it was off a rebound or a steal, the Porters looked down the court to make a pass for an easy basket. They had 16 team steals for the night and 29 rebounds.

Elena Woulfe, Ciara Mayes, Emily Dybas and Kucharski led with five rebounds apiece, while Campbell had a teamhigh five steals.

“We’ve been practicing pushing the ball up the floor,” Kucharski said. “Every single time we get the ball, we’re looking up the floor to get a pass to the open girl so that they couldn’t set up their defense and we can score easier.”

Lockport made scoring look easy.

When the Porters were not rushing passes down the floor, they were practicing new plays in a game situation, and the girls were happy with the results. The new plays produced better results because they stayed focused and didn’t go through the mo-

One player who thrived off the plays and off the rushing was Campbell. The senior was a perfect 4 for 4 from beyond the arc and totalled 24 points and four assists.

Kucharski and Woulfe both added 10 points, while Taylor Hopkins had six points

and three steals. Kaleigh Schmutzler (four points), Ciara Mayes and Kayla Isom also got on the board.

The success across the board results from pushing the ball.

“Our girls are getting better at the things that we’re working at,” Porters coach

Dan Kelly said. “With our team speed, we don’t have a lot of size, so we want to push the ball. We’ve been emphasizing it in practice for the past two weeks, and tonight it started coming together. We got the ball either off of turnovers or off of rebounds, and we looked to get it and go, push the pass, try to get some easy baskets and play to our strength of our team speed and our team depth.”

Lockport’s defensive play was able to contain Joliet Central’s offense. Morgan Jones led the Steelmen (3-7) with 10 points, while Monica Barefield scored her nine in the first half.

Central had some moments where it shined, such as when Barefield made a no-look pass to set up Ashley Hare for a basket.

The spurts were not enough, however.

“They started with high energy, and we walked around the court,” Central coach Bri-

Playing with that high energy and quick-paced game is what the Porters will need to do better than last year’s 1115 record, according to Campbell, Kucharski and Kelly.

“We’re going to have to go against teams, Lincoln-Way East and H-F, that have a ton of size,” Kelly said. “We don’t have the size, but we have the speed, so we’re going to try to play that fast-paced game.

“We have to keep this energy going. We’ve got to keep this momentum going and keep learning and getting better. The only thing we ask from you is energy, effort and improvement. It’s showing.

That’s what we need.”

Joliet Central in its SouthWest Suburban Blue game Friday night against Lockport. The Steelmen prevailed, 45-38, in a game where both teams had their share of offensive woes, especially from the free-throw line.

“We want to play fast, we want to go,” Central coach Jeff Corcoran said. “When you try to play fast offensively, sometimes you make the wrong reads.

“If either team tonight had shot 60 or 70 percent from the free-throw line, it would have

been a lot different game.”

Central made 9 of 20 from the line. And Lockport’s zone defense was an issue.

“Up to this point, I thought H-F [Homewood-Flossmoor] and Minooka were the physical teams we played, but I think Lockport is the most physical team we have seen.

We are smaller and quicker, but it can be tough against really physical teams.”

Central saw more of that Saturday night. The Steelmen took the long bus ride to Moline and dropped a 66-46

decision. Moline features a 6-foot-7 center, Andy McLaughlin, who scored 27 points on 12-of-16 shooting and had nine rebounds and four blocks.

Central’s “big man” around the basket, Malik Fuller, is maybe 6-2. He plays taller, and as Corcoran said, “his motor is always going.” But he plays so hard that Corcoran said, “We have to find a way to get Malik a few positive minutes of rest during a game.”

Regardless of how good the Steelmen wind up being this season, if anyone else trots out a good 6-7 center against them, it probably will be an issue.

Central qualifies as one of the shorter good teams you will see.

LOCKPORT

First-year Lockport coach Brett Hespell, meanwhile, said it is no picnic to go against the Steelmen’s pressure.

“It all starts with their defense,” he said. “Since they went to split programs in Joliet, they have gotten better every year on defense. That’s a credit to Jeff [Corcoran] and his staff.”

From Lockport’s perspective, Hespell said the Porters “are so close to being a good team. But you have to be the one that dictates the game, not the other guy.”

The Porters made only 14 of 44 shots, 31.8 percent, and were 8 of 18 from the free throw line.

“If we’re going to have trouble putting the ball in the basket, we have to be perfect on defense,” Hespell said. “But we’re close. We’re in a position to have a lot of success. We have great, high-character kids. I think we will get there.

“I think Joliet Central and us are two pretty solid teams.

You’re going to hear from both of us.”

With Joliet Central moving to the Southwest Prairie next season, Friday night could have been Lockport’s final visit to Central. But Hespell said the plan is to keep the long and storied rivalry alive.

“Jeff [Corcoran] and I are going to try to keep playing if we can,” he said.

Joliet Catholic boys basketball coach Joe Gura appreciates a good laugh.

He also knows the other kind of funny.

“We battled and played good defense, and now we can’t score,” Gura said last Saturday night after his Hilltoppers had fallen short at Minooka, 52-48, a night after dropping a 50-38 decision at powerful Benet.

“It’s just funny, not ‘ha, ha’ funny, the other funny.”

All summer long, Gura said he had no concerns about this team’s offensive ability. Senior guard Jalen Jackson is one of the best shooters and scorers in the area; and with sophomore Donovan Finch added to a supporting cast including Harry Davis, Luke Mander, Jared Lenoir and Pete Ragen, there were sufficient weapons.

If anything was keeping Gura awake nights, it was defense. How were the Hilltoppers going to stop good teams from scoring?

This season started with a bang as JCA won the Aurora Christian Tournament. But on the weekend with two big road tests, at Benet and Minooka, the Hilltoppers had difficulty finding the basket.

“I’ve been coaching 44 years,” Gura said. “Just when you thought you have seen it all, this comes up. I wouldn’t trade the defense we are playing for anything – I never thought I would say that – and our shooting was terrible.”

Gura said it might just be a matter of relaxing on offense, taking “that half-deep breath and running our offense.”

The Hilltoppers have the look of a team that can compete against strong opponents, and that’s certainly what they will see all season in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. As Gura said, when they relax and do what they are capable of doing offensively, they will be an interesting watch.

Hopefully, no more of that other funny.

Pete Rose’s plea for reinstatement rejected by Manfred

By JOE KAY and RONALD BLUM The Associated Press CINCINNATI – Pete Rose’s application for reinstatement to baseball was rejected Monday by commissioner Rob Manfred, who concluded that the career hits leader continued to gamble even while trying to end his lifetime ban and would be a risk to the sport’s integrity if allowed back in the game.

Rose agreed to the ban in August 1989 after an investigation for Major League Baseball by lawyer John Dowd found Rose placed numerous bets on the Cincinnati Reds to win from 1985 to 1987 while playing for and managing the team.

In one of his first major actions, Manfred said in a fourpage decision the career hits leader admitted he has kept on betting legally on horse racing and professional sports, including baseball. Manfred upheld the conclusions of the

Dowd report and said MLB obtained additional evidence not available to Dowd: a notebook of betting records from 1986 kept by Rose associate Michael Bertolini.

“In short, Mr. Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life either by an honest acceptance by him of his wrongdoing, so clearly established in the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of all the circumstances that led to his permanent in eligibility in 1989,” Manfred wrote.

Manfred also said Rose has never “seriously sought treatment” for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Behavior, conditions he said in his 2004 book had afflicted him.

associations that originally led to his placement on the permanently ineligible list.”

Rose’s lawyers said he will comment on the decision at a news conference Tuesday.

“While we may have failed

at our task of presenting all of the facts to the commissioner demonstrating how Pete has grown and changed over the past three decades, Pete has meaningfully reconfigured his life,” Rose’s lawyers, Ray Genco and Mark Rosenbaum, said in a statement.

“Pete’s fall from grace is without parallel, but he recognizes that it was also of his own making,” they said. “As such, Pete seeks to be judged not just by the mistakes of his past, but also by the work he has done over the last three decades to take responsibility for his actions.”

Manfred said when he met with the 74-year-old Rose, the 17-time All-Star at first was not forthcoming about his current gambling.

“Rose initially denied betting on baseball currently and only later in the interview did he ‘clarify’ his response to admit such betting,” Manfred wrote.

Bulls rout 76ers with 2nd half surge The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler had 23 points and the Bulls rallied from a halftime deficit for a 115-96 rout of the lowly Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night.

Cahill, Cubs finalize $4.25 million, 1-year contract

CHICAGO – Trevor Cahill and the Cubs have finalized a $4.25 million, one-year contract, a deal that allows him to earn an additional $7.5 million based on starts.

The 27-year-old righthander went 1-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 11 relief appearances with the Cubs last season after agreeing to a minor league deal Aug. 18 and joining the big league club when rosters expanded on Sept. 1.

Cahill broke into the majors with Oakland in 2009 and won 18 games while making the AllStar team the following year.

He is 65-72 with a 4.13 ERA in 212 appearances – 173 starts – with Oakland (2009-11), Arizona (2012-14), Atlanta (2015) and the Cubs.

Cahill would earn $750,000 for 18 starts, $1 million for 21, $1.25 million for 24 and $1.5 million apiece for 27, 29 and 31.

He can make $700,000 based on relief appearances: $100,000 for 60, $150,000 for 65, $200,000 for 70 and $250,000 for 75. In addition, he can made $300,000 for 25 games finished.

Blackhawks get Scuderi from Penguins for Daley

CHICAGO – The Blackhawks acquired Rob Scuderi in a trade Monday night with the Pittsburgh Penguins for fellow defenseman Trevor Daley.

Scuderi, 36, has four assists and 32 blocked shots in 25 games with Pittsburgh this season. He has eight goals and 96 assists in 745 games over 12 NHL seasons with Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.

Scuderi, who won a Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009 and Los Angeles in 2012, was a late scratch before Pittsburgh’s 4-1 loss to Washington on Monday.

Pittsburgh will pay a third of the remaining value on the four-year, $13.5-million deal Scuderi signed in 2013.

Rolle goes on IR; Wilson undergoes surgery

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears placed safety Antrel Rolle on injured reserve Monday and activated rookie tackle Tayo Fabuluje from the reserve/ suspended list, John Fox announced.

Rolle injured the knee in practice and was hopeful to return Sunday after being limited in practice Thursday and Friday, but he was inactive on Sunday.

The sprained MCL that Rolle suffered was a non-contact injury, Fox confirmed.

Rolle, who signed a threeyear, $11.25 million contract in the offseason, appeared in seven games this season and made 35 tackles and one pass defensed. It’s the fewest games he has played in a season since his rookie year in 2005. Rolle had played in every game but one from 2006 to 2014.

Fabuluje was suspended four games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Fox said Marquess Wilson, who was placed on IR on Saturday, broke a bone in his foot in a non-contact injury in practice and underwent surgery.

Sherrick McManis, who played 43 snaps as the nickel corner in Sunday’s loss, experienced concussion symptoms after the game and is now in the league’s concussion protocol.

Pernell McPhee missed his second game of the season with a knee injury, but Fox said he “wouldn’t go so far as that” when asked if McPhee may need to be shut down for the final three games. He is to have a full injury update Wednesday.

Deadly condition, unknown causes Pre-eclampsia is on the rise; new drug is undergoing research trials

NEW LENOX – At only 20 weeks of pregnancy, Kate Payne of New Lenox was diagnosed with early-onset pre-eclampsia.

This occurs before gestational week 34 and is the most dangerous form of the condition.

“I could not believe this was happening to us after we tried so hard for that little baby,” Payne said.

Pre-eclampsia is a disorder that occurs during pregnancy and postpartum. Symptoms include an increase in blood pressure, liver and kidney function impairment, blood clotting problems, brain injury, pulmonary edema, seizures and even death.

The babies can be born small or premature, can be malnourished or stillborn, and later are prone to such adult diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

The causes are still under investigation, according to Dr. Robin Whatley, an OBGYN with Bolingbrook’s AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center.

“Unfortunately, nobody really knows,” Whatley said.

“It’s one of the hotter topics in OB-GYN today because we’re seeing more of it.”

Whatley said ways that medical staff help pre-eclampsia patients may include magnesium drips to prevent seizures, anti-hypertension medication, and thorough monitoring of both mother and baby.

Researchers also are testing medications, including Chicago trials of rEVO Biologics recombinant human antithrombin. According to the company, antithrombin is a human blood protein that occurs naturally and helps maintain normal blood flow.

Two years ago this month, when their New Lenox neighborhood was cold and frosty, Jim and Kate Payne were enjoying a Caribbean cruise.

After years of struggles conceiving – including intrauterine insemination, five rounds of in vitro fertilization and a frozen embryo implantation – Payne was finally pregnant with her first child.

The couple had scheduled their cruise before the August discovery that they had finally conceived. The pregnancy only made the trip sweeter.

With an appointment already scheduled for the next Monday morning, Payne let things be after she got home and rested the remainder of the weekend. Her Illinois doctors were concerned as they watched her blood pressure steadily rise and her ankles continue to swell.

“My platelets crashed,” Payne said, “and my blood work was completely out of whack. All my kidney and liver functions were basically going berserk.”

She delivered two days before Christmas. Unfortunately, doctors could not save baby Jack. Payne’s blood

pressure didn’t return to normal until about six weeks after delivery.

Payne is grateful her health returned. A friend of hers developed congestive heart failure as a result of pre-eclampsia.

Condition on the rise

According to a paper published in the American Journal of Perinatology, pre-eclampsia and early-onset pre-eclampsia have increased by 67 percent and 140 percent, respectively, during the past 20 years.

According to the Preeclampsia Foundation, the conditions are a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death. They affect 5 to 8 percent of pregnancies in the United States Pre-eclampsia and early-onset pre-eclampsia are thought to be two separate conditions, Whatley said, with different causes. Both probably stem from some-

thing happening in the placenta, because giving birth and delivering the placenta is the only cure.

That’s the big challenge with the early-onset variety, Whatley said. Early delivery, with subsequent infant death if the baby is too young to survive outside the womb, is sometimes the only way to save the mother’s life.

It’s important that pregnant women know the signs of pre-eclampsia, Whatley said, and to see a doctor as soon as possible if they experience them. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms also might include visual disturbances, nausea and vomiting, and decreased output of urine.

Payne, who is now mother to a healthy 8-month-old son – Thomas, born at full term – echoed that advice. Be aware of the symptoms, she said, and trust your gut.

“I don’t care if a doctor or nurse thinks I’m crazy,” Payne said. “I’ll call and ask.”

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Fire Department recently visited sixth-grade students at Bentley Elementary and Spencer Crossing Intermediate schools.

Each class discussed the importance of 911 emergencies and how important responder time is during emergency situations. They also learned about the new 911 text message system that was activated in the area recently.

Each class broke into small groups to discuss adult and infant CPR, as well as choking protocols.

District 202 students take part in Project SEARCH at hospital PLAINFIELD – Nine District 202 P-STEP students are working at Bolingbrook’s AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center this school year through the Project SEARCH internship program. They work in a variety of departments, including the coffee shop, operating room or lab.

The program is funded with a federal grant and relies on partnerships with the hospital, Trinity Services Inc. and the Illinois Department of Human Services/ Division of Rehabilitation Services from Rehabilitation Services Administration.

District 202 is one of only five Project SEARCH worksite partnerships in Illinois.

The program can accommodate 10 students.

Students began their internships in August and gain real-work experience and life skills to help them prepare for life after school. This is the first year for Project SEARCH in District 202.

The highlighted errors are split 13 on bidding, 25 on declarer play and 14 on defense. Each chapter contains a few deals and ends with a list of useful tips.

This layout is in the chapter entitled “Not Thinking Straight,” which could refer to every mistake anyone makes.

specific areas. It is always on the side of the body affected by the stroke. It may be felt as a burning pain, pins and needles, or a pressing, sharp or aching pain.

Pain medications may not be effective. However, anticonvulsants such as gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) may help. Stress tends to increase the intensity of all symptoms. Therefore, managing stress may also help reduce pain.

Another stroke complication that causes pain is spasticity, an involuntary contraction of your muscles. This leads to stiff, tight muscles and tendons that make stretching difficult. Without treatment, the affected muscles may remain in abnormal and often painful positions.

Treatments include: • physical therapy that involves stretching the affected muscles and using braces that hold the muscles in a normal position; • medications, including muscle relaxants and anti-anxiety drugs known as benzodiazepines.

• Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, which can ease spasticity by blocking the signals sent from nerves to muscles. Injections of a different toxin, called phenol, reduce nerve impulses to the spastic muscle. A third possibility is an implanted pump that delivers a muscle relaxant to the spinal cord.

Finally, a doctor can surgically correct a tendon that has become contracted and permanently shortened due to spasticity. So you have many options to treat the pain you’re suffering following your stroke.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve been in pain ever since I had a stroke about six months ago. What will relieve it?

Dear Reader: Pain is a frequent complication of stroke. It generally falls into one of two types, local or central.

Local pain results from joint and muscle problems.

Strokes can make some muscles weak and stiff.

That, in turn, can make the muscles hurt when they move (or are moved).

It also can cause the bones in a joint moved by those muscles to shift out of their proper place, producing pain in the joint. Treatment is fairly straightforward and may involve a variety of options: • range-of-motion and stretching exercises; • over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); • use of a sling or armrest to support a weak shoulder; • strategic positioning of a weak leg while in a wheelchair or in bed; • cortisone injections to reduce inflammation.

Electrical stimulation of the involved muscles, botulinum toxin injections to relax tight and stiff muscles, or acupuncture may also help.

Less common, but more difficult to manage, is a neurological condition called central pain syndrome (CPS). CPS results from damage to sensory pathways.

What are sensory pathways? Sensations (like pain, heat, touch, vibration) from all over the body travel up nerves to the spinal cord. From there they travel up the spinal cord to different centers in the brain. Strokes can affect those centers. As a result, the brain misinterprets normal sensory input as painful sensations.

Central pain is typically constant and moderate to severe in intensity. The pain may be felt over a large part of the body or in

Dear Abby: I’m writing about the letter you printed from “Excited in Maryland” (Aug. 16), whose wife makes snide comments about his impending retirement. That milestone is the biggest, scariest life change people make – a time marker like no other.

With many people, our identity is tied to our careers. In my case, I enjoyed a long, successful career as a social worker, counselor, teacher and mother. I wasn’t the primary breadwinner and was able to work less than full time. When I retired seven years ago, my day was my own, with little accountability to my husband. I had quiet when I wanted it, music of my own choosing, ate when and what I wanted – and complete privacy all day, every day.

My husband, one of the nicest men I’ve ever known, retired two years ago, and I still haven’t come to terms with the fact that he’s home all the time. He doesn’t ask me to do anything differently, but he’s HERE, which means my definition of privacy has changed. I realize how lucky I am to have him, our long marriage, our health, our kids and financial stability. I just need a predictable block of time I can depend on to have the house all to myself.

That letter writer’s wife may be worried about the huge change that is coming.

My husband has enough interests, hobbies and projects that he’s always busy, but we are different people. He can get lost in his project while I’m “on alert” for any interruption, real or imagined.

A couple of my friends have decided to postpone retirement because they don’t want to be home all day with their husbands. They are both mental health therapists, but they can’t talk

That is what I would have recommended, if either of the couples you mentioned in your letter had asked, to improve their level of communication.

As for the rest of us “regular” folks, a licensed family therapist would be qualified to help. I agree that retirement requires an adjustment on the part of both spouses. You should look for a counselor who is older and who can empathize with what you and your husband are experiencing.
