Schoolhouse Mokena The first school classes in Frankfort Township were taught by Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Hiram Wood in a log schoolhouse, located in section 19, in the southwest boundary of the village.

Soon after the founding of Mokena, the first schoolhouse was built. This structure was a small frame building constructed in 1855 and was located on a village-owned section near the corner of Second and Union Streets.

In 1872, a new, two-story elegant wood-frame building with a stone basement was built on the northwest corner of Front Street and Schoolhouse Road (named for the schoolhouse). The school grounds extended from Front Street on the south to First Street on the north. This schoolhouse served the needs of the village until the new building, known as the Mokena Public School, (Carpenter Street School), was completed in 1929. The old two-story schoolhouse building was razed in 1934.

The new Mokena Public School housed grades one through eight, until 1944, when it included two years of high school. Prior to this, any student wanting a high school education had to enroll in classes at Joliet Township High School. Located at the corner of Carpenter and Division Streets, the Carpenter Street School shown in the then photograph, operated until 1978 and now houses Mokena Village Hall. The now image shows a similar view of the old Carpenter Street School today.

Holly Club of Joliet celebrates 125 years

JOLIET – The centerpieces at Saturday’s Holly Club Ball were black-and-white photos from decades of the club’s volunteers and balls. The historical reminders were the perfect sentiment for the celebration of the club’s 125th year of serving the Joliet community.

“It’s a great honor to carry this on,” Holly Club Vice President Lori Bergman said of the ball, “and to honor all the ladies who came before us. ... It’s a wonderful turnout.

This is a group that has a lot of fun.”

Carolyn Curl has been a member for more than 40 years and said the ball is a holiday tradition she looks forward to every year.

“I am the oldest active member,” Curl said. “I have only missed two balls. ... This is our big event of the year.

Our aim is to help the women and children of the community. It’s a nice group of ladies.”

Curl and her friend Judy Medvesky, who has been in Holly Club for 38 years, initially joined the club as a progression from the Joliet Junior Women’s Club, in which they were both active.

“I wanted to help in the community,” Medvesky said.

“We all believe very strongly in the things we do for the community.”

The 119 members, patrons and guests who attended the ball met at the Joliet Country Club for cocktail hour, then a meal and later some dancing and enjoyment of the music provided by the High Society

Orchestra. The event served as a fundraiser for the club’s many charitable projects.

“What the club does is for the community,” Bergman said. “We fill in the corners that the other agencies can’t fill.”

The Holly Club took its name from its ball, always held just before Christmas. Its eight young founders were too young to attend the first ball, but organized it to assist their efforts to help Joliet’s sick and needy.

The ball’s co-chair, Lisa Morel Las, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy counties, said Holly Club fulfills the needs in Joliet grade schools by supplying winter coats and clothing to students in need; providing psychological counseling for low-income residents, with special consideration for domestic violence victims and first responders; holding Christmas parties at the senior living residence, Victory Center in Joliet, and many other charities.

Its history also involves providing bandages for the war-wounded, hot lunches for Joliet school children and emergency food for families in need.

“This is a group of really inspirational women who care about the community and have a really big sense of altruism,” Las said.

Club patron and president of First Midwest Bank, Jim Roolf, whose wife, Kim, is a member, said he has supported the group since before Kim joined.

Seals and School District 86 that are so important, and yet most people don’t know it,” Roolf said. “The school district very discreetly lets the Holly Club know of particular needs. ... That’s a vitally important thing to do.”

The ambiance at the ball included laughter and gaiety, conversation and photos, but those there knew the evening also was the club’s largest fundraiser.

“Dig deep and buy those raffle tickets,” Bergman urged at the beginning of the affair.

Holly Club Secretary Lora McGuire said one of the members began an old-fashioned letter-writing campaign this year that brought in $21,000 all on its own.

Last year, the club donated more than $45,000 to its charities, and all of it stayed in Will County. There are administrative costs, but those expenses are covered by the annual dues members pay, not by their fundraising.

Residents protest outside Rialto over marquee

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Clara Yunker has fond memories of the Rialto Square Theatre.

Yunker, of Plainfield, said she attends performances at the theater regularly and fondly remembers seeing Glen Campbell, Carol Burnett and Buck Owens at the theater in downtown Joliet.

“People come from all over to see it,” she said. “People come from Europe to see it.”

She was one of many who signed a petition offered Sunday afternoon by protesters to those heading into the Rialto for the Joliet American Legion Band’s Sounds of Christmas concert.

The protesters were expressing their concerns about the new marquee for the Rialto, as theater managers have said the old ballasts and neon tubes used in the marquee have become obsolete and are difficult to replace. The individual letters have become brittle.

“I don’t want them to change it,” Yunker said of the marquee. “This is the Jewel of Joliet. Don’t touch it.”

The petition stated that signers were voicing their “displeasure with the new Rialto marquee” and the appointed

officials in charge of the sign, and were requesting an audit by the Illinois Auditor General. Petitioners also were asking public funding be withheld until after the audit is performed and new Auditorium Authority Board members appointed.

“Whatever we can do to help out,” said Tom and Joyce Perkins of Gardner, both of whom signed the petition on

the way inside to hear the Joliet American Legion Band’s Sounds of Christmas concert.

Others have asked the Joliet City Council to withhold city contributions to the theater until the sign’s design is changed.

“My grandfather performed in the pit in the ’30s and ’40s,” petitioner Mary Beth Gannon said. “A lot of people have a history here, and I’d like to save it.”

Protester James Keegan said he likes the original design better.

“We’re just thinking about the architecture of the theater,” Keegan said. “It doesn’t seem to go with the theater at all. ... The new one looks like it should be on a gambling riverboat.”

Rialto representatives Trish Stoner and LeAnn Hoffrogge offered the protesters complimentary tickets for the day’s performance but declined to comment.

Rialto General Manager Randy Green has previously stated that the new sign was an appropriate reflection of the

building from an architectural standpoint, while using modern technology to enhance the way the theater would provide information to the public.

Some feel the “in memoriam” display on the marquee to the Czerkies’ parents is not an appropriate addition to the sign.

Michael Morgan said he felt that the order for the marquee should be canceled if it already has been placed.

“I applaud Ed [Czerkies] for coming forward with the money,” he said. “I just have a problem with the application. ...

The intent is not to slam him.”

Morgan said a better idea would be for Czerkies to honor his parents with a brass plaque in a prominent location at the theater, not on the marquee.

The protesters collected canned goods to donate to the American Legion. They also encouraged people to attend Monday’s Joliet City Council meeting to voice their opinion about the sign. Green is scheduled to speak Monday at the council’s pre-council meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m.

Big Brothers Big Sisters benefits from fundraising campaign

By HANNAH KOHUT hkohut@shawmedia.com Right now in Will and Grundy counties, there are children seeking positive adult role models in their lives. Some of them just need someone to talk to, while others want encouragement and support.

Since 1970, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy counties has been pairing mentors with local children and changing lives. As a partner agency of the United Way of Will County, Big Brothers Big Sisters will benefit from the Herald Angels giving campaign. Without donation gifts, the agency would not be able to reach out to children when they are in need.

“We serve at-risk kids who are predominantly from single-parent homes, be it from

death, incarceration or military [duty],” said Lisa Morel Las, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy counties. “When you see the despair on a mother’s face that the child’s father is [serving] overseas, it’s one less worry for her, knowing there is a caring, responsible mentor that is helping her son.”

Las said support from the United Way also keeps the Big Brothers Big Sisters lights on and allows the agency to hire social workers. The funds are critical, she said, especially during difficult economic times.

“People have continued to give to the United Way, and that has helped us stay afloat,” Las said. “And [parents] are so grateful to have a big brother or big sister for their child.

Again, it’s a relief.”

Having a big brother or big sister can be a life changer.

Las said she has observed significant improvements in the little brothers and sisters once they are paired with mentors.

For instance, Las said, some children are either bullies or victims of bullying. It all boils down to a lack of self-confidence.

“Being a bully usually means there is a self-confidence issue,” Las explained.

“And a victim of bullying develops self-confidence issues.

Our mentors will work on that.”

Las said parents often tell her how much their child’s school grades and behavioral issues have improved, and that having a second adult hold the child accountable is key.

“When we interview the

mom and child [for the program], we get a real understanding of who the kid is,” Las said. “And we have goals for that mentor, like helping their coping skills improve.”

However, the impact can be just as powerful for the mentors as it is for the children.

Sandy Churchwell of Elwood decided to become a “big sister” three years ago, thanks to a trip to the circus.

“I was attending the circus with [my niece and nephew] and thought about how many kids that do not have the opportunity to go to the circus or other events,” Churchwell said. “I wanted to make a difference to a child and that’s why I became a big sister with BBBS.” Churchwell’s “little sister” is treated like a member of her family, attending birthday

Whether they are the old-fashioned molded Santa Clauses (I believe there’s still one in our attic from when my husband Mark was a child), the newer-style air blow-ups like Woodstock wearing a Santa hat, nativity scenes or homes completely outlined with strings of twinkling lights, they all add to the feeling we connect with the holidays.

Driving east on Interstate 80 recently, just east of the Minooka exit, a good-size lighted star with a tail caught my eye on the south side of the interstate. It was set up on a berm behind a house on Davidson Drive. I got goosebumps as a Christmas song

I’d like to personally thank Eric and Mariela Hernandez for putting it up.

I just knew it was there to share the Christmas spirit with all who travel along the interstate. I stopped at their home and Eric was happy to talk to me about the star. It’s something his wife Mariela has always wanted to do and they decided this was the year to start the tradition.

“So everybody can see as they drive by,” Eric said.

Think of the people on the road at night; perhaps a long-distance truck driver having to work through the

holiday or a teenager making it home for Christmas. Then they see this bright star in the distance as they approach the town of Minooka.

Minooka also has a huge star atop the 70-foot silo in the middle of downtown.

The six-foot high star has been there longer than most of the people who now work there. It stays up all year, but just before Thanksgiving, operator Lyle Hecht changes the bulbs and makes sure it’s in working order and turns it on after turkey day.

It’s something I drive by frequently and haven’t given much thought to. But now I will.

And of course each town has its own holiday lighting traditions and decorations. Downtown Minooka

feels like an old-fashioned hometown with the lighted decorations and wreaths on the light poles up and down the street.

Veteran’s park and the Village Hall are lit up with colored lights, as well.

In Channahon the white lights wrapped around the 18-foot light poles on Navaho Drive seem to welcome you as they lead up to the Village Hall. Utilities and Streets Superintendent Bruce Vaickus would like to see more decorations, some that could be seen in the daytime, along Navajo, he said.

Channahon Park District’s Central Park on U.S. Route 6 has been decorated for the holidays since my kids were little. I recall waiting for the lights to go on each year and the kids and I

would make a point to drive through the park, oohing and aahing at the lights.

My particular favorite is the tree made entirely of white lights.

If you aren’t in the spirit of the season yet, it’s time to pack up the family into the car and head out for an hour or so of holiday light viewing.

Ann attended her class reunion a month before her death, wearing the matching “Class of 1959” sweatshirts she had made for her and Ada, and then voted Nov. 4, the day before her death at age 73, Ada said.

During Ann’s last couple weeks, she climbed the stairs to her sewing room to make one last quilt for her hospice nurse, who was having a baby, Linda said. She then started a barn quilt. Ada stitched the top part as a surprise for Ann. Two hours after Ada showed Ann her work – at Ann’s insistence – she was gone. Ada said she will finish that quilt for Ann and looks forward to one day reuniting with her twin.

“I’ll meet her in the quilt shop in heaven,” Ada said, “where every corner matches and every color blends perfectly.”

PLAINFIELD – While working on a quilt the other day, Ada Findlay of Plainfield suddenly stopped to check her work and found she had pieced together the wrong sides of some squares.

Ada believes the prompting might have come from heaven, sent by her twin sister, Ann Taylor of Plainfield and most recently of Sheridan. Ann was a more precise quilter. Regardless of how it happened, Ada is thankful.

“It saved me hours of work,” Ada said.

Growing up on a Plainfield farm, Ada said she and Ann preferred bailing hay to 4-H sewing projects, never realizing that one day, Ann would make and give away 140 quilts in a 25-year period to anyone Ada knew was having a baby.

“She even made quilts for my friends, even though she never met their kids,” said Linda Taylor of Sheridan, Ann’s daughter. “At her wake, one of my friends brought three baby quilts and said, ‘Look at what your mom made for each of my kids.’ ” Although both Ann and Ada sewed – with Ada making her wedding gown and Ann making her bridesmaid’s dress to accompany it – it wasn’t until the late 1970s that Ann started quilting.

They met monthly with six other women in a group they called SAG (Stitch and Gab). Ada said she herself had quilted since high school,

but never with the precision and volume that Ann did.

“She liked everything to be planned beautifully and carried out beautifully,” Ada said.

But Ann, a former United Airlines stewardess, showed her care for others in a variety of ways. She was a proud 6-gallon blood donor. For many years, she volunteered with the Plainfield High School band, chaperone trips and managing the uniforms, hemming and repairing as needed, said Ann’s son, Roy Taylor of Yorkville.

Ann also donated many artifacts to the Plainfield Historical Society and worked hard to locate descendants of her friends, so Ann could give them the letters those friends had written to her, Roy said. But it was like Ann to make the extra effort.

Roy recalled how, when he was 7 and expressed an interest in space programs, Ann wrote to NASA, as well as the Johnson Space Center, asking for information she could share with Roy. “One of the original seven astronauts wrote back, thanking her for the interest,” Roy said.

So when Ann was diagnosed with uterine cancer, she refused to let it rule her life, Linda said. She remained infectiously upbeat, to the point of passing out cookies to the nurses when she had chemotherapy treatments, and volunteering at Plymouth Congregational Church in Plainfield following a particularly grueling

City council members also are set to vote on a new intergovernmental agreement for the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone.

The new agreement keeps the same boundaries but will have changes to the application and evaluation process for the zone, Benson said.

“We had the zone in place for a long time. ... We’re doing an entirely new process,” he said.

An enterprise zone provides incentives for business investment and job growth such as tax exemptions. Benson said the zone is a way to add “state incentive on a local basis” by exempting sales tax for businesses on items such as machinery equipment.

Benson said the agreement includes participation from Will County, Joliet, Rockdale and Romeoville.

LOCKPORT – The Lockport City Council this week is set to discuss the controversial plan to put residential property on Broken Arrow Golf Course.

The concept plan proposed by owners of Broken Arrow Golf Club calls for duplexes – along with a banquet facility and cultural center – to be installed at the Par 3 portion of the Broken Arrow Golf Course.

On Wednesday, city council members are scheduled to discuss the plan, which was not popular with some residents who spoke out against it at a Nov. 5 committee of the whole meeting.

City Administrator Ben Benson said Mayor Steven Streit is seeking approval of the concept plan but wanted to address concerns residents had about drainage, traffic control and density.

“I think it’s important for the mayor and city council to hear both sides and hear a solution,” Benson said.

At the Nov. 5 meeting, city officials tabled discussion of the project by request of the petitioner. As a concept plan, the proposal would include a site plan but not other preliminary plans for landscaping or engineering.

If approved, it then would be followed by a series of approvals for other plans, Benson said.

It all started about this time last year. Mrs. Claus and the elves noticed I wasn!t hearing as well as I should. It really became obvious after we returned to the North Pole after Christmas.

GUIDO J. MARCONI Guido J. Marconi, age 93, was called home to the Lord with his loving family by his side on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at Symphony of Joliet.

He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps during WWII and a member of American Hardwood Post # 5.

JOHN L. RENDE SR. John L. Rende, Sr., age 88, late of Lockport, passed away peacefully at his residence Friday, December 12, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Joliet, lived in Lockport since 1955. Retired from Lemont’s Citgo Refinery after 38 years of service. He also owned and operated Rende Electric. A very proud United States WWII Veteran; he was a supply Sergeant in the US Army, Honorably Discharged in May, 1946. During his time of service, he received 3 bronze stars (cluster), The American Theatre Ribbon and the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbons. He also received 2 overseas Bars, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany). Life member of Lockport VFW post # 5788.

John was a VERY active member of St. Joseph’s Church in Lockport, where he ushered over 55 years, and also was active in Holy Name Society and the American Italian Cultural Society in Crest Hill. He was an active supporter of the LTHS Athletic Programs, his grandchildren’s numerous arts and sports events. He loved to fish, hunt, watch sports, and do his electrical work. John was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and dear friend.

Preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Josephine “Jay” P. (Traina) Rende; a grandchild; his parents, Gaetano and Concetta (Loizzo) Rende; and two sisters, Infant Francesca, and Elvida Walker.

Survived by his devoted children, Jo Ann (John) Kohlhagen of New Lenox and John Jr. (Marcia) Rende of Morris; four grandchildren, Zak (Pamela) Kohlhagen, Zoe (Al Martinkus, fiancé ) Kohlhagen, Brittany (Darren) McMillin and Ryne (Megan) Rende; two great-granddaughters, Natalie and Alyssa Kohlhagen; a great-grandson, baby McMillin due December 2014; a brother, Joseph (Corrine) Rende of Lockport; and a sister, Frances Pavnica of Joliet; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

ST. LOUIS – Ken Staley spends days setting traps in pursuit of beavers, otters, raccoons and muskrats. Yet the southwestern Illinois man for years has craved the chance to catch a more exotic prey: bobcats.

Soon, he may get his chance.

On the threatened species list for more than two decades until 1999, the nocturnal, pointyeared cats have made enough of a comeback that Illinois lawmakers approved a measure this month allowing bobcat hunting in the state for the first time in more than 40 years.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources supports the move, believing the state’s bobcat population has rebounded to about 5,000 and that regulated hunting will help in long-term management of the species. While advocates say bobcats have become nuisances in some places, opponents question the science behind declaring them recovered and argue that bobcat hunting is all about trophies, not food.

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who leaves office next month, must sign the bill for it to become law, although he has given no indication if he will support it.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Demario Bailey was shot and killed Saturday in the Englewood neighborhood on the city’s South Side, three days before his 16th birthday.

The victim’s aunt, Michelle Fitzpatrick, told the newspaper that her nephew and his twin brother, Demacio Bailey, were walking to Demacio’s basketball practice when would-be robbers demanded the victim’s jacket. Fitzpatrick said Demario Bailey was shot in the chest when he wouldn’t comply, and died a short time later.

The victim was a sophomore at Johnson College Prep charter school.

There was no immediate word Sunday about any arrests or charges, but police said they were questioning people.

Man gets 9 years for role in liquor store heist

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – A southwestern Illinois man has been ordered to spend more than nine years in federal prison for his role in a Belleville liquor store robbery last year.

Twenty-three-year-old Roderick Taylor pleaded guilty to a three-count indictment charging him with felony counts of conspiracy to commit interference with commerce by robbery, interference with commerce by robbery, and use of a firearm during a crime of

violence.

Prosecutors said Taylor and a co-defendant robbed Arena Liquor in Belleville at gunpoint in July of last year and fled with more than $10,000 in a car driven by a third suspect.

No one was injured, and the trio was arrested a short time later.

The two other defendants await sentencing.

Illinois county moves historic Civil War statue

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – For 145 years a statue of a Civil War soldier has stood in front of the Rock Island County Courthouse in western Illinois.

Rock Island County Sheriff Gerry Bustos told The Moline Dispatch that weather has damaged the soldier statue.

He said he moved it Thursday inside a county garage for safe keeping until enough money can be raised for restoration.

The statue has been on top of the county’s Civil War memorial since 1869.

The move comes after the statue was taken off its base in July when it was found that it could fall.

Bustos said years of exposure to the weather have caused the marble statue’s face to “melt.”

Bustos said two local companies helped the county move the statue indoors at no cost.

Spending deal may not offer road map for 2015 Congress

By CHARLES BABINGTON The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Optimists might think twice before seeing Congress’ bipartisan agreement to keep the government running another year as a road map for 2015.

The dynamics that tamed both parties’ ideological wings on the weekend will change next year, handing new challenges to congressional leaders who often struggled just to keep the government’s bills paid.

Republicans will feel new pressures to show they can produce, even as 2016 presidential politics – and President Barack Obama’s incentives to veto legislation – add uncertainties to the mix.

On the bright side – for people who abhor government gridlock, at least – last week’s events showed lawmakers can assemble bipartisan majorities in the political center on big measures that leave everyone a bit unhappy. The $1.1 trillion spending bill will finance most of the government through September, making a repeat of the 2013 shutdown unlikely.

The bill angered conservatives who wanted to block Obama’s executive changes to immigration policy. And it displeased liberals who say it unwisely loosens restrictions on risky Wall Street practices.

But Obama and most congressional leaders called it an acceptable compromise, the type of accord once common in Washington. The only top congressional leader to oppose it was House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, and she stopped short of pressing her colleagues to kill it.

The Senate will be in a session a few more days to deal with tax breaks, nominations and terrorism insurance.

When the new Congress convenes next month, four important changes will occur.

They don’t make bipartisan accords impossible, but they will pose new complications: • Republicans will control both legislative chambers, not just the House.

This enhances their clout, of course. But it also will encourage some conservative firebrands to demand politically unfeasible goals, such as repealing the president’s health care law.

• Senate Democrats will use the same filibuster rules to block GOP measures that Republicans have used for six years. Republicans will hold 54 of the Senate’s 100 seats.

Measures being filibustered need 60 votes to advance.

• Obama may decide to veto some bills that Congress passes. Overriding vetoes is extremely difficult, requiring two-thirds majorities in the House and Senate.

• The 2016 presidential race, now underway, will complicate congressional politics. As many as five senators are considering joining the race. They include Republican Ted Cruz of Texas and Democrat Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Both tried to derail the big spending bill for different reasons.

Cain of Arizona, the party’s 2008 presidential nominee, told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday: “Unless we can show the American people that we can govern, then we’re not going to elect a Republican president in 2016.”

But it won’t be easy, said Ron Bonjean, a former top GOP congressional aide.

Even with Republican House and Senate majorities, he said, the GOP agenda “could grind to a halt in the Senate because it will take 60 votes to pass anything.”

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the incoming majority leader, said the Senate will accomplish more because he will allow wider debate and more amendments to bills, which Democrats had limited sharply. He said Republicans are willing to make tough votes, even on Democratic amendments designed for political mischief.

“Partisanship itself has never been the problem,” McConnell said in a statement Sunday. “The real problem has been a growing lack of confidence in the Senate’s ability to mediate the tensions and disputes we’ve always had.”

At climate talks, a crack in rich-poor barrier

By KARL RITTER The Associated Press LIMA, Peru – A last-minute deal salvaging U.N. climate talks from collapse Sunday sends a signal that the rich-poor divide which long held up progress can be overcome with a year to go before a landmark pact is supposed to be adopted in Paris.

Still, it remains to be seen whether governments can come up with a new formula for how countries in different stages of development should contribute in a way that keeps global warming from reaching dangerous levels.

“This issue will be contentious, and it will need to be

worked through all the way to Paris,” U.S. climate envoy Todd Stern said after the marathon talks in Lima finished, more than 30 hours behind schedule.

The U.N. talks still were far away from reaching any agreement on reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to a level that scientists said would keep global warming in check. But the Paris agreement would be the first to call on all countries to control their emissions.

The U.S. and other developed nations said that means tearing down the firewall in negotiations which compels only rich countries to rein in emis-

sions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Although it was agreed in 2011 that goals set in Paris would be “applicable to all,” many developing countries worry they will be required to take on emissions controls that stymie their economic growth.

In Lima, they angrily rejected a draft text that made no mention of different responsibilities and capabilities to fight global warming.

“We are in a differentiated world. That is the reality,” Malaysian negotiator Gurdial Singh Nijar told delegates.

“Many of you colonized us, so we started from a completely different point.”

They are paying a private lab to breed mice that carry bits of their own tumors so treatments can be tried first on the customized rodents.

The idea is to see which drugs might work best on a specific person’s specific cancer.

The mice may help patients make what can be very hard choices under difficult circumstances. Studies can suggest a certain chemotherapy may help, but patients wonder whether it will work for them. Often there’s more than one choice, and if the first one fails, a patient may be too sick

Despite the tough rhetoric, the conference ended Sunday with a compromise based on a groundbreaking U.S.-China deal last month on emissions targets.

The Lima decision noted the principle in the 1992 U.N. climate change convention that countries have “common but differentiated responsibilities” to tackle climate change. But like the U.S.-China deal, it added that this should be seen “in light of different national circumstances,” suggesting countries’ responsibilities change over time as they develop.

One study of 70 patients found the mice generally reflected how well patients responded to various drugs.

But there is no evidence using mice is any better than care based on medical guidelines or the gene tests many patients get now to help pick drugs.

Mouse testing costs $10,000 or more, and insurers don’t cover it. It takes several months, so patients usually have to start therapy before mouse results are in.

“I do see promise, but it’s very time-consuming, it’s very expensive. For the average patient, standard care is going to be the way to go,” said Alana Welm, a cancer researcher at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama’s push to cover America’s uninsured faces another big test Monday.

This time, it’s not only how the website functions but how well the program itself works for millions who are starting to count on it.

Midnight Monday, Pacific time, is the deadline for new customers to pick a health plan that will take effect Jan. 1, and for current enrollees to make changes that could reduce premium increases ahead of the new year.

HealthCare.gov and state insurance websites are preparing for heavy online traffic before the deadline, which gives consumers in the East three hours into Tuesday to enroll.

Wait times at the federal call center began creeping up around the middle of last week, mainly due to a surge of current customers with questions about their coverage for next year. Many will face higher premiums, although they could ease the hit by shopping online for a better deal. Counsel-

ors reported hold times of 20 minutes or longer for the telephone help line.

About 6.7 million people now have coverage through Obama’s signature law, which offers subsidized private insurance. The administration wants to increase that to 9.1 million in 2015.

To do that, the program will have to keep most of its current enrollees while signing up more than 2 million new paying customers.

People no longer can be turned down because of health problems, but picking insurance still is daunting for many consumers.

Joliet Catholic junior guard Jalen Jackson took a dribble and let it fly.

Swish. It was from well beyond the center line, about 60 feet from the basket – the kind of shot you see occasionally on the the Top 10 Plays on ESPN. Jackson’s attempt at a buzzer-beater was waved off.

He released the majestic shot a fraction of a second late.

At the time, it did not seem it would matter in the outcome. JCA was leading visiting Minooka, 35-21 in Saturday night’s nonconference battle. But with what happened after that, I started thinking later that maybe it did matter.

Minooka scored the first two points of the fourth quarter on Nick Clemmons’ free throws, but the Hilltoppers’ Harold Davis and Jalen Jackson then hit back-to-back baskets to make it 39-23 with 7 minutes left.

Minooka (4-4) had opened Southwest Prairie play a week earlier with a loss to Plainfield North when the Indians could not hold a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. Then Friday night, they found the lid on the basket in a 47-31 loss to Plainfield East.

The inability to score was the theme that was brewing for most of Saturday night.

Suddenly, however, the Indians became a different team. They turned up the physical switch, paraded to the free throw line 25 times in the fourth quarter, made 21 of those attempts and pulled out a 49-45 victory.

“After losing tough games to North and East, to get this ‘W’ and get back to .500 is real big,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “The entire team did a great job carrying out what we told them in the huddles. They did a great job believing.

“We still have a young team, but we’re growing.”

Once coach Rob Brost’s banged-up team gets over illnesses and injuries and gets everyone back, the Raiders could be something special.

As for Jordan and Stumpe, their first meeting of the season is on tap Friday night as North visits East. This one ultimately will have a bearing

on how the SPC race plays out.

I occasionally asked which one is better, Jordan or Stumpe. Both are 6-foot-5, handle the ball well, are scorers and can function at any spot on the floor. Right now, I’d say I would take either on my team.

Meanwhile, the 6-foot-1 Nixon, who is lightning quick with the release on his shot and his game in general, appears to have gotten even better since a year ago, not that he needed much improvement.

“Prentiss is an all-stater for good reason,” Brost said.

As happened last season, I can envision choosing a player of the year from among Stumpe, Jordan and Nixon, when that time comes, will be interesting.

Not after trading for Jeff Samardzija and Dan Jennings and signing David Robertson in an extraordinary week that turned the 2015 Sox from “maybes” to “bona fide contenders” in the American League Central.

The winter-meetings flurry followed the November signings of cleanup hitter Adam LaRoche and lefty reliever Zach Duke. But that wasn’t nearly enough for chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, executive vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn, who must have been bluffing when they said they were out of cash before they signed left fielder Melky Cabrera to a three-year, $42 million contract, first reported late Saturday.

Cabrera, the MVP of the 2012 All-Star Game, hit .301 this past season with 35 doubles, 16 homers and 73 RBI. The Sox need his switch-hitting and high on-base-percentage. Cabrera would fit nicely behind leadoff man Adam Eaton, and his defense, while not Gold Glove-caliber, is a significant upgrade in left field over Dayan Viciedo, who figures to be traded.

The Sox already had taken the winter meetings by storm with the additions of Samardzija, a top-of-the-rotation starter, and Robertson, who closed for the Yankees last season. If trading for Samardzija at the risk of having him for one year didn’t prove the Sox were going for it, giving Robertson four years and $46 million clinched it.

Cabrera’s signing, which becomes official when he passes a physical, hiked expectations to high and giddy levels.

“Samardzija and Robertson go ‘boom-boom,’ and you get so excited, and you can see

how excited Chicago is,’’ Eaton said. “Then the Cubs sign [Jon] Lester, and that fuels the fire for us to make big moves, and then [Saturday] night comes the Melky move. To see those guys have a plan, put it in motion and see it play out is impressive.’’

Eaton, one of the key pieces in the Sox’ young core with Chris Sale, Jose Abreu, Jose Quintana and Avisail Garcia, expected Hahn to improve the team, but not like this.

“This many moves? I think everyone is shocked,’’ Eaton said. “It shows confidence in us, even though we had a rough year last year.”

Cabrera, 30, a career .286 hitter, doesn’t come without cost and perhaps some risk.

Because Cabrera rejected a qualifying offer from the Jays, who had hoped to re-sign him, the Sox will give up their thirdround draft pick (their first is protected, and the second went to the Yankees for signing Robertson). Plus, Cabrera received a 50-game suspension for elevated levels of testosterone with the Giants in 2012. That season, he was leading the National League in hits and was second with a .346 average when he was suspended Aug. 15. Major League Baseball and the players union disqualified him from the batting title – a measure Cabrera had requested – and the Giants left him off their playoff roster.

None of that mattered enough to the Sox. Reinsdorf, 78, who has watched attendance slowly but steadily decline since the Sox won the World Series in 2005, wants badly to win again, and as Williams has said since the GM meetings, the Sox – who lost 99 games in 2013 and 89 last season – are tired of “taking it on the chin.’’

“I can’t tell you how excited I am that Jerry, Kenny and Rick are going for it this year,” Sox broadcaster Steve Stone said.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Derek Anderson threw for 277 yards and a touchdown, Graham Gano kicked four field goals, and the Panthers improved their chances in the NFC South playoff race.

The win, coupled with Atlanta’s loss to Pittsburgh, put the Panthers percentage points in first place ahead of New Orleans in the division.

The Saints (5-8) play at the Bears on Monday night.

Josh McCown threw a touchdown pass and ran for another for the Bucs (2-12).

Chiefs 31, Raiders 13: In Kansas City, Missouri, Alex Smith threw for 297 yards and two scores, while Kansas City shut down Derek Carr and the Oakland offense.

Knile Davis had touchdowns running and receiving, and De’Anthony Thomas returned a punt 81 yards for another score as the Chiefs (86) got even for a 24-20 loss to Oakland (2-12) last month.

Giants 24, Redskins 13: In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Eli Manning threw three touchdown passes to rookie Odell Beckham Jr. Manning and Beckham combined 12 times for 143 yards, with touchdown passes covering 10, 35 and 6 yards.

The win was the second straight for the Giants (5-9) after seven consecutive losses.

The Redskins (3-11) blew a touchdown and command of the game on a fumble by Robert Griffin III as time expired at the end of the first half.

Jets 16, Titans 11: In Nashville, Tennessee, Chris Ivory scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in a game between teams playing only for pride, with the loser hoping for better draft position.

The Jets (3-11) got their first road win this year in the first NFL game to end with a 16-11 score. The Titans (2-12) have lost eight straight and 11 of 12 in their worst skid since 1994 when home was in Houston.

The Bears and the New Orleans Saints feature two of the worst defenses in the NFL. Both are so bad it is hard to give either team an edge on this side of the ball.

The Bears are 32nd, dead last, in the NFL in points allowed, but the Saints are 30th.

What that means is either team is capable of losing every time they step on the field.

The Bears are 16th against the run, 30th vs. the pass, 19th in third-down efficiency, 13th in time of possession and 24th in turnover ratio at minus-6.

New Orleans is 29th vs. the run and 29th vs. the pass, 32nd in third-down efficiency, 14th in time of possession and 29th in turnover ratio at minus-9.

The Bears appear to be marginally better, but they give up more points than the Saints. And that’s where this matchup turns.

New Orleans, in spite of its 5-8 record and all its ills, still has one of the NFL’s best offenses. When the Bears have the ball, they aren’t even close.

The Saints are third in total offense, ninth running the ball, third passing it, 12th avoiding interceptions, fourth avoiding sacks, second in third-down efficiency and ninth in points scored.

The Bears are 18th in total offense, 26th running the ball, 11th throwing it, 23rd and 14th allowing interceptions and sacks, respectively, 17th on third down and 17th in points scored.

Beyond the stats, the Bears will be without their best receiver – Brandon Marshall. If they get into a shootout, they most likely will lose.

The Bears’ chances to win lean completely on running the ball, keeping the Saints’ offense off the field and for their patchwork defense to play its best game of the year.

Should coach Marc Trestman choose not to run the ball, at least as often as he throws it, against the league’s 29th-ranked run defense, we’ll

have to wonder if he does really want to come back as the Bears’ coach next year.

Trestman reported Friday, and again Saturday, that his team has done an excellent job of blocking out the distractions of the past 72 hours and focusing on the Saints. What better way is there to let them respond by setting them up to come out and punch somebody in the mouth, and just keep punching until the other guys no longer can resist.

It would allow them to keep New Orleans’ still-very-dangerous offense off the field and it would play to the strength of the Bears’ best offensive player – Matt Forte.

For the Bears to be successful on the ground, they will have to neutralize Inside linebackers Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne, and Junior Galette, who is an outside linebacker in Rob Ryan’s base 3-4 package, and also the Saints’ best pass rusher.

Corey White and Keenan Lewis both are big cornerbacks who’ve run hot and cold this year, and it will be interesting to see how Alshon Jeffery fairs being asked to step up as the No. 1 receiver.

As good as the Saints have been on offense, neither of their all-pros, Drew Brees or Jimmy Graham, have been themselves this year. That doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous, but it seems unlikely Graham is completely healthy.

Saints coach Sean Payton might go with the same game plan the Bears should and feed his horse, Mark Ingram, all night. Ingram has been effective when healthy, rushing for 810 yards, at a 4.5-yard clip, and six touchdowns.

Finally, there is the reality that with a win the Saints can take command of the NFC South and the fourth seed in the NFC playoffs with two games to play, while the Bears are playing for pride and to overcome the embarrassments of recent events. Motive would see to clearly favor the Saints.

CLEVELAND – Johnny Manziel spent his first NFL start being chased and taunted by Cincinnati defenders as the Bengals rudely welcomed the hyped rookie quarterback to the league Sunday with a 30-0 demolition of the Cleveland Browns.

Manziel failed to live up to the overwhelming buildup surrounding his debut as the AFC North-leading Bengals (9-4-1) built a 20-point halftime lead and rolled to their fourth straight road win.

Manziel, promoted over the slumping Brian Hoyer to spark the Browns (7-7), finished 10 of 18 for 80 yards and two interceptions.

Patriots 41, Dolphins 13: In Foxborough, Massachusetts, New England clinched the AFC East title for the sixth straight season as Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes in a big third quarter.

New England (11-3) can secure home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs by beating the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. Miami (7-7) saw its slim postseason hopes dwindle further.

Broncos 22, Chargers 10: In San Diego, Peyton Manning played through a thigh injury and flu-like symptoms and Connor Barth kicked five field goals to lead Denver to a fourth straight AFC West title. The Broncos (11-3) won their fourth straight game.

The Chargers (8-6) entered the game as the AFC’s No. 6 seed and saw their wild-card chances diminished. They’ve lost two straight.

Colts 17, Texans 10: In Indianapolis, Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes and the Colts won their second straight AFC South title. The Colts (10-4) have won four straight.

Houston (7-7) lost starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with a left leg injury in the second quarter.

Seahawks 17, 49ers 7: In Seattle, Marshawn Lynch rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown, Russell Wilson

threw a touchdown pass to rookie Paul Richardson, and the Seahawks knocked archrival San Francisco from playoff contention.

After a sloppy first half, Seattle (10-4) awoke in the final 30 minutes behind the running of Lynch and a defense that held the 49ers to 67 yards.

The loss and Detroit’s win eliminated San Francisco (77) from contention.

Lions 16, Vikings 14: In Detroit, Matt Prater’s 33-yard field goal with 3:38 remaining lifted Detroit into a tie for first place in the NFC North.

The Lions (10-4) are even atop the division with Green Bay, which lost to Buffalo.

But Detroit didn’t have an easy time, spotting the Vikings (6-8) a 14-0 lead before a pair of second-quarter interceptions helped the Lions start their rally.

Bills 31, Packers 13: In Orchard Park, New York, Bacarri Rambo intercepted two Aaron Rodgers passes and Marcus Thigpen scored on a 75-yard punt return.

Dan Carpenter hit all three field-goal attempts, including a 51-yarder in the second half to help keep Buffalo (8-6) in the AFC playoff picture.

The Packers (10-4) blew a chance to get closer to their sixth straight playoff berth.

Dunleavy scores 22 to help Bulls beat Heat in Miami

By STEVEN WINE The Associated Press MIAMI – Derrick Rose was fouled on a fast break, staggered off the court and kept going out a tunnel.

He came back unhurt, but the Bulls hardly needed him.

Mike Dunleavy led a balanced attack with 22 points, and the Bulls overcame a sloppy start Sunday to beat the offensively challenged Miami Heat, 93-75.

The Bulls had their lowest-scoring game since Nov. 21 and still won easily, building a 26-point lead in the second half. Dunleavy said the makeup of the team lends itself to scoring consistency.

“With what we have, there shouldn’t be many nights where we struggle offensively,” he said. “If the outside shots aren’t going, we have many ways to get inside, and we can push the ball. We’ve got a lot of options.”

Jimmy Butler had 17 points, Taj Gibson 15 and Rose 14 for the Central Division-leading Bulls. They improved to 11-3 on the road, best in the Eastern Conference.

Chris Bosh (calf strain) missed a game for the first time this season, which left the Heat without enough punch or size to challenge the Bulls. Miami shot a season-low 35 percent, including 4 for 22 from 3-point range.

“A guy like Chris is irreplaceable,” said Dwyane Wade, who had 17 points for Miami. “All we ask for and hope for is he can get back as soon as he can when he’s healthy.”

The Heat’s point total matched their season low.

The Bulls pulled away in the third quarter because of Dunleavy. He was shut out in the first half but scored 19 points on eight shots in the third period, when the Bulls outscored Miami, 33-16.

Dunleavy finished 4 for 5 from 3-point range, while the Bulls shot 9 of 18 beyond the arc and 47 overall.

The teams slogged through an ugly first half in their first matchup this season. The Bulls committed 13 turnovers but led, 39-32, because Miami shot only 29 percent.

Saad’s goal lifts Hawks over Flames THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Brandon Saad scored with 7:03 left in the third period, and the Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames, 2-1, on Sunday night for their 12th victory in the last 14 games.

After motoring past Calgary defenseman Mark Giordano, Saad took a centering pass from Jonathan Toews and lifted a shot past Jonas Hiller’s glove.

Toews also set up Patrick Sharp’s power-play goal as the surging Hawks dealt the Flames their fifth straight loss. The Hawks had won eight in a row before Satur-

day night’s 3-2 loss at the Islanders.

Jiri Hudler had his team-leading 12th goal for Calgary, which has scored just eight times during its slide.

Sharp’s goal was his first since returning Tuesday from a knee injury that sidelined him for 14 games. Sharp, who led the Hawks with 34 goals last season, has four this year – all on the power play.

The Hawks’ Antti Raanta made 23 saves while subbing for Corey Crawford, who is out with a foot injury.

Rookie Scott Darling had started the Hawks’ last four games.

Hiller finished with 26 saves.

Before the game, Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said he expected Crawford to return next weekend. Raanta and Darling have filled in nicely since Crawford was hurt while leaving a concert two weeks ago.

Neither team had many chances in the scoreless first period.

We have all heard the expression “necessity is the mother of invention,” penned by Jonathan Swift. It was amended by Mark Twain (“necessity is the mother of taking chances”) and Thorstein Veblen (“invention is the mother of necessity”).

How does Swift’s line apply to this deal? South is in three no-trump. After West leads his fourth-highest spade, what should declarer do?

North was aggressive in jumping straight to three no-trump. But he decided that if his diamond suit was worth five tricks, the contract would probably make. Alternatively, if partner could not get more than two or three tricks from the suit, probably even two no-trump would be too high. Also, by not inviting game, he kept the defenders in the dark about the strength of South’s hand.

Note that if North had raised to two no-trump, South would have had a close decision. Yes, he had only 15 high-card points, an apparent minimum, but he had three aces, one king and respectable spot cards. So it would have been reasonable to bid game, especially when vulnerable.

Now back to the play in three no-trump. South started with eight top tricks: two hearts, five diamonds and one club. He needed a ninth from somewhere. At the table, South played a low spade from the dummy at trick one. East won with his jack and returned the suit, giving the defenders the first five tricks.

It was a necessity for South to call for dummy’s spade queen. His best chance of not only a spade trick but also his ninth winner was that West had underled the ace-king.

If East had either of those honors, the contract was almost certainly unmakable.

It is difficult to tell the difference between a stroke and a TIA when it is happening. It’s even difficult for a doctor to tell.

That’s why it is important to get to the emergency room right away when you have symptoms that could indicate a TIA or a stroke.

If it’s a stroke, early treatment can reduce or even reverse the damage.

There is one other really important reason to get medical attention for symptoms of a TIA, even if they go away.

A TIA is a warning sign that you are at risk for a serious stroke. Just because the symptoms have disappeared does not mean that the danger is over.

In fact, up to one out of five people who have a TIA go on to have a full-blown stroke within 90 days.

The good news is that prompt treatment after a TIA can reduce the risk of a stroke.

Treatment can include drugs to prevent blood from clotting, and drugs to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

What about the woman on the bus? After about an hour, she felt fine.

But she called her doctor. She had experienced a TIA. Testing showed she had blood clots in her heart that placed her at great risk for a major stroke.

Thanks to proper treatment, she’s still going strong more than 10 years later.

Doctor K: My mother went to the hospital for what we all thought was a stroke, but the doctor said it was a TIA. What is a TIA? What does this mean for my mother’s health?

Dear Reader: First, let me tell you about a patient. She was a woman in her 70s who was in good health.

One day, she was on a bus to the grocery store, a trip she had taken hundreds of times. Suddenly, she felt disconnected from the world.

When she felt connected again, she realized she hadn’t gotten off at the right stop. I’ll come back to what happened to her later.

Your mother had a transient ischemic attack, or TIA. Initially, a TIA, or “mini-stroke,” causes the same symptoms as a stroke. The difference is that the symptoms of a TIA are temporary and usually last less than an hour.

A mini-stroke doesn’t permanently damage the brain like a stroke does.

Let me explain what a stroke is, and highlight the difference between a stroke and a TIA. Every cell in the brain needs a constant supply of oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood.

If the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted, that often causes symptoms: problems with vision, speech, ability to move an arm or leg, confusion or difficulty understanding what’s happening around you.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted for long enough that the cells in that part of the brain die.

Usually, unless the stroke involves a very small part of the brain, a stroke causes long-lasting symptoms.

With rehabilitation treatments, those symptoms sometimes can improve or even disappear

Dear Abby: Recently, our state became one that allows same-sex couples to wed. My partner, “Alex,” and I have been together for 18 years. We had planned to be married last spring, but a death in the family put our wedding on hold.

When I found out about the ruling, I expected Alex to be excited and suggest we go ahead and marry.

To my disappointment, he didn’t seem to care. He hasn’t mentioned marriage once, and when I bring it up, he’s quiet and doesn’t respond.

We’re older, and because of health issues we don’t have an active sex life. I’m wondering if my relationship with him has been downgraded to “roommate” without me realizing it. Do I push this? Do I let it alone and settle for what I have now?
