JOLIET – Police said an elderly driver turned the dining section of a Joliet restaurant into a drive-thru Thursday.

Witnesses told police that at 12:48 p.m., a 2013 Scion was traveling west on Black Road, turned into a parking lot near Infantry Drive and drove through the glass front of Aisha’s Southern Cuisine, 2775 Black Road.

“Witnesses said the vehicle was moving erratically before it accelerated over the curb,” Sgt. Brad Dubs said.

The car went through the dining area and struck the restrooms at the back of the restaurant.

The 85-year-old woman who was driving was not injured, but she was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for an examination.

Kielian is selected to be new Will County public defender

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One of Gerald “Jerry” Kielian’s first jobs after becoming a lawyer was working for the Will County Public Defender’s Office.

Forty years later, his career has come “full circle,” he said.

On Thursday, Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt announced that Kielian will take over as the public defender Gerald i n F e b r u a r y . Kielian Kielian replaces Frank Astrella, who has been public defender for seven years. The public defender’s office represents defendants in criminal cases who are unable to afford a lawyer. The circuit judges interviewed 14 applicants for the position.

“We had several outstanding candidates and selected a

lawyer who has spent almost his entire career passionately defending the rights of the accused,” Schoenstedt said.

Kielian graduated from Joliet West High School in 1965.

After serving as a Marine in Vietnam and receiving the Purple Heart, he attended the University of Illinois and majored in psychology.

“I still had a bit of money remaining on my G.I. Bill, and my best friend suggested we go to law school together. Before that, I hadn’t thought about becoming a lawyer,” Kielian said.

Kielian attended Valparaiso University School of Law and started as a Will County assistant state’s attorney before going to the public defender’s office and later his own firm.

“I thought at this stage of my career, I would be a good mentor to young attorneys in the PD’s office, and it gives me the opportunity to keep my hand in

the game,” Kielian said.

He plans to appear regularly in court on a few high-profile cases, such as homicides.

“I’m not going in with any preconceived notions. [Assistant public defender assignments] aren’t changing automatically,” Kielian said.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said he was “exhilarated” to learn of Kielian’s appointment.

“Jerry is a very skilled attorney. He understands what can be negotiated and what cases have to go to trial,” Glasgow said. “I think the public’s going to see less continuances, and the system’s going to run much more smoothly.”

“A defense attorney can’t pick which cases are prosecuted. Sometimes the facts are good. Sometimes the facts are bad. A defendant doesn’t have to prove himself innocent,” Kielian said. “I enjoy being an advocate for the disadvantaged.”

New truck ordinance expected to help with growing industry

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Officer Robert Casares had just started his patrol Thursday when he got a call for help dealing with a truck on Route 53.

“We were out for this guy three or four months ago,” said Casares, one of two fulltime truck enforcement officers in Joliet.

The truck on Route 53 had expired temporary plates and was stopped for the same violation earlier this year. This time, Crest Hill police stopped the truck near the Joliet city limit. The officer called Casares for help in what turns out to be complicated work – citing trucks for violations.

Even the seemingly obvious violation of driving on expired plates was no simple matter. The last time the truck was stopped, the court threw out the case after the company contended the state was slow in sending the plates.

Crest Hill Officer Jason Heiss said the expired plates were one problem, but not the only one.

“If you watch this thing going down the road, it does not look safe,” Heiss told Casares as they talked about the truck, which had the unique feature of two front steering axles and was hauling construction filler to a job in Joliet.

Heiss’ observation turned out to be correct. A state trooper called to inspect the truck found a half-dozen safety violations, including problems with the suspension and steering.

The truck was towed away.

Laraway landfill expansion given recommendation Will County committee adds conditions to its OK

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County Board committee Thursday recommended approving an application for a 150-acre expansion of Waste Management of Illinois’ Laraway Road site, with special conditions.

Waste Management is seeking approval for the expansion, targeted to grow areas to the north and south of its 200-acre Laraway Road facility, located two miles west of Route 53.

The expansion reportedly will add about 10 years to the lifespan of the facility, which is expected to reach capacity in its current state in 2021.

“It seems like a good plan,” said Don Moran, chairman of the three-member Pollution Control Facility Committee, which passed the recommendation.

The committee reviewed a report of findings and conditions by independent hearing officer Larry Clark, which states that Waste Management will meet or carry the burden of nine criteria points required for site expansion.

Based on testimony and findings, Clark’s report stated that the facility meets the nine points of criteria, such as being necessary, preserving public health, minimizing impact on nearby property, and minimizing danger to the area and traffic.

Three public meetings were held in October, with “the shortest one about four hours long,” Moran said.

“It seems like a good plan.”

According to the report, Will County staff added 13 special conditions to Waste Management’s plans, five of which were reviewed by the committee Thursday after Waste Management disputed them.

The committee ruled on these final conditions after the dispute by Waste Management: • Waste Management must comply with the Will County Water Resources Ordinance because no permit is required.

• A mining subsidence plan will be submitted for county review if and when mining is proposed under the facility, but not before.

• Waste Management must observe the type of material in open-top vehicles before unloading if it doesn’t have the appropriate paperwork, or is a new waste stream to the landfill.

• Waste Management doesn’t need a whole new regimen for landscaping berms, but a timeline does need to be established.

• A special condition for the requirement of a traffic light at Centerpoint Way and Laraway Road was removed because traffic won’t significantly change, according to studies.

Wreaths Across America to return Saturday to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – The sacrifices of the veterans buried in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery will be remembered Saturday with the cemetery’s annual Wreaths Across America event.

As part of the under taking, volunteers will lay wreaths on the grave markers of those who served.

“This is just a small gesture that we can do each year to show our respect,” volunteer location leader Debbie Smothers said of the event, which is held simultaneously at more than 900 cemeteries.

The effort yielded placement of 6,500 wreaths last year, and 9,400 wreaths are anticipated to be placed in 2015. There are 43,000 veterans buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

More than 1,500 volunteers are expected to participate in the event this year.

Students in the group meet in classroom lab – where a 3D printer is located – to work on projects. They also use social media tools.

“It encompasses all the different parts that go into manufacturing, promotion, social media,” West said.

For their first project, members of the club created a 3D-printed prosthetic hand, which is also called a Raptor hand. West said the hand is made for someone who still has wrist motion.

West said the cost for the group to create the hand was

3D printers, design skills and personal time to create free 3D-printed prosthetic hands for people in need, according to their website. The overall goal is to provide them to underserved populations around the world.

An estimated 1,500 hands have been delivered from the organizations’ volunteers, including children, according to its website.

The students used a 3D printer, software and tools to create the hand – as well as performing a cost-analysis of parts needed for it – and used Twitter to promote it.

“We use social media more so people are aware,” said Michael Guerrero, a JC Engineers member.

Guerrero is one of three students who work with Twitter and Facebook to promote the group with photos and videos.

Student Gabriel Hernandez created a 3D animation of the group logo JC Engineers also created a “rolling cookie cutter” that cuts cookies in the shape of a Steelmen mascot.

The Will County Officers Electoral Board met Thursday afternoon at the Will County Courthouse to adopt rules for hearing challenges to the petitions for Barbara Guerrero, a Democratic candidate for circuit clerk, and Sinatra Strong, a Democratic candidate for County Board District 3, which includes Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

The Will County Officers Electoral Board consists of County Clerk Nancy Schultz-Voots (R), Circuit Clerk Pamela McGuire (D) and State’s Attorney James Glasgow (D) – although at one point Thursday not one of those three was at the hearing.

Chief Deputy County Clerk Judy Wiedmeyer and Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Tatroe filled in for their re-

spective supervisors. McGuire was present to approve the procedure for Strong’s review, but turned over her seat to Sheriff Mike Kelley (D) for Guerrero’s hearing.

“Because this objection involves the circuit clerk’s office, another [elected official] is chosen for the board. The treasurer was unable to do so, so the sheriff will,” Assistant State’s Attorney Phil Mock said. McGuire is not running for a sixth term as circuit clerk, but has endorsed Democrat Andrea Chasteen. Robert Enright also has filed to run in the Democratic primary.

Strong filed for the District 3 primary along with Elizabeth Rice and Donald Moran.

The board will reconvene next week for “binder checks” to compare petition signatures with those on voter registrations, the validity of addresses provided on the petitions and if anyone signed petitions for candidates from both parties.

Guerrero’s hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday and Strong’s for 11 a.m.

JOLIET – Will County Board Republicans and Democrats accused each other of not being honest after a long-range building plan for the courthouse project was reviewed Thursday during a Committee of the Whole meeting.

Finance Committee Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, presented Dec. 1 the preliminary long-range financial plan for the project to a joint Finance and Capital Improvements Committee meeting.

Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said Thursday the plan could be voted on at next week’s board meeting.

But Democrats said Thursday they want more time to review the plan and accused Republicans of not being transparent.

“None of this was vetted in a public hearing or anything, or in open committees,” said board member Don Moran, D-Romeoville. “So I’m just trying to grasp my arms around it right now.”

Will County Executive Chief of Staff Nick Palmer said his office didn’t receive the plan until Dec. 1.

“That’s because the county executive continually said to this board, ‘Show me the funding, show me the revenue streams,’” Moustis said. “You didn’t want to participate.”

Two men acquitted of casino cheating

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two Michigan men were acquitted Wednesday on charges of cheating in a poker game using hand signals at Hollywood Casino in Joliet.

Judge Edward Burmila said that while it appeared Christopher G. Yaldo, 31, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, and Isam Y. Kejbo, 41, were communicating with each other, prosecutors did not prove the signals influenced their bets. Burmila said he was unable to find them guilty during the bench trial that began Tuesday.

On Nov. 30, 2013, Yaldo and Kejbo were playing Mississippi Stud at Hollywood Casino.

According to prosecutors, the men sat apart from one another but would tap different fingers when one was able to see the card the dealer took from the shuffling machine on the table.

Defense attorney Robert Loeb said the two men only were taking advantage of a “sloppy” dealer who wasn’t hiding cards properly. During his videotaped interview with an agent from the state gaming board that was played in court Wednesday, Yaldo said he’d played in a similar manner in other states and didn’t believe it was illegal.

If convicted, both men could have faced from one to three years in prison and a lifetime ban from Illinois casinos.

Teen charged with reckless homicide, aggravated street racing in fatal Aurora crash

By THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed charges of reckless homicide and aggravated street racing against a juvenile authorities said was involved in a Dec. 4 crash that killed a 49-year-old Aurora man.

The 16-year-old male juvenile from Aurora surrendered Wednesday to Aurora police and appeared Thursday morning in Will County Juvenile Court, according to a news release from the state’s attorney’s office.

He was remanded into juvenile custody, and a status

hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m.

Dec. 22 at the River Valley Justice Center in Joliet.

Aggravated street racing is a Class 4 Felony. Reckless homicide is a Class 3 Felony. The maximum sentence the youth could face is to be held in an Illinois Department of Corrections juvenile facility until his 21st birthday.

The case remains under review for potential charges against another person who allegedly was involved in the crash, according to the news release. The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office reminds the public that charges are not evidence of guilt.

JOLIET – A crane lift company is expanding to Joliet with the acquisition of Speedway Crane.

Imperial Crane Services acquired the company in December, and representatives said in a news release the acquisition is a move that will help accelerate Imperial Crane’s expansion into the Joliet corridor. Imperial Crane is based in Bridgeview and has additional offices in Indiana and Texas.

“Speedway Crane being located in the Will County area was very appealing to us as we continue to grow Imperial Crane footprint locally and nationally,” Ron Selby, the company’s worldwide sales director, stated in an email.

He also said Speedway Cranes has a “great safety record,” which has been part of Imperial Cranes’ culture since 1969. “It’s a great fit for us and for the Joliet corridor,” Selby stated.

New Joliet regulations

The growing logistics industry in and around Joliet has made trucks on the road a bigger part of local life.

Joliet is updating its truck regulations, including a new ordinance against blocking traffic and the city’s first fees for overweight permit violations.

Joliet Officer Don Karcz, who has done truck enforcement for about 20 years, said a new $500 ticket for blocking traffic will help with one of the city’s oldest problems – trucks hitting the railroad viaducts downtown.

“We’ve had companies who have said, ‘We can have a tow truck there in an hour.’ And, they’re coming from Chicago,” Karcz said. “When they find out there’s a penalty to be paid, they move a little quicker.”

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Thursday that temporary, overnight ramp closures have started on the interchange between Interstate 55 and Lake Shore Drive.

The closures are necessary to complete pavement repairs for the ongoing I-55/Route 41 interchange reconstruction project, according to a news release from IDOT. Through Saturday, the following ramp closures are occurring:

Chicago protesters target independent police review agency

CHICAGO – Protesters who have been calling for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s resignation also have another target: a much-criticized, quasi-independent agency that was created to investigate complaints against police officers but rarely has ruled against them.

The mayor’s critics complain that his pledge to reform the Independent Police Review Authority is too limited because he seeks to improve an existing system rather than scrapping it and starting over.

In the outrage that erupted over the video showing an officer fatally shooting Laquan McDonald, Emanuel sacked his police chief and set up a task force to recommend changes.

He also replaced the head of the authority known as IPRA. Former IPRA investigator and supervisor Lorenzo Davis said he was fired this year after refusing to reverse his finding in one fatal police shooting that it

The idea behind IPRA when it was set up in 2007 was for the agency to be wholly independent of police and the mayor’s office as a way to weed out bad officers, but that never actually happened, Davis’ lawyer, Torreya Hamilton, said Thursday.

“The goal became to exonerate the police officer and therefore the city,” said Hamilton, who represents Davis in a lawsuit he filed against the city over his firing.

No clemency for man after someone else confesses

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner rejected posthumous clemency for an Illinois man imprisoned for the stabbing of an elderly woman, even though a serial killer confessed to the crime more than a decade after the inmate died.

Grover Thompson died in 1996 while serving a 40-year sentence for the attempted 1981 murder of 72-year-old Ida White in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

A Dec. 2 Illinois Prisoner Review Board letter provided to The Associated Press shows that Rauner denied clemency for Thompson in late November – nearly four years after the board, under former Gov. Pat Quinn, held a hearing on a petition filed by a Thompson family

member. The one-sentence letter offers no explanation for the decision.

The clemency was denied even though in 2007 serial killer Timothy Krajcir confessed to former Carbondale, Illinois, police detective Paul Echols that he stabbed White. He also confessed that same year to a Cape Girardeau, Missouri detective Jimmy Smith. Both men testified before the Illinois panel on Thompson’s behalf, and both confirmed their accounts in separate conversations with the AP.

Data: Fewer Illinois students taking standardized exams

CHICAGO – Illinois saw an increase in the number of students who didn’t take the state’s standardized exams last school year, but it still met a participation rate of at least 95 percent, according to new state data.

Students who didn’t participate were either marked absent or refused to take the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, exams, which were being given for the first time in Illinois, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The tests given in 2014, ISAT and Prairie State, no longer are given statewide. The state is

releasing the PARCC scores this week.

The data, which the Tribune obtained through a public records request, show that about 44,000 students didn’t take the English Language Arts test last school year and 42,000 didn’t take the math test. They make up about 4 percent of the more than 1 million students who took tests last school year, compared to about a half-percent who children who didn’t take exams in 2014.

The number of students taking the exams is important because state and federal officials have said there could be sanctions if too few students are tested.

Man, 20, killed in Franklin County mining accident

MARION – A 20-year-old man has died in an underground mining accident in Franklin County.

Tyler D. Rath was killed in the accident late Tuesday at a mine owned by St. Louis-based Foresight Energy and operated

by M-Class Mining at Sugar Camp Energy LLC near Macedonia.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler hasn’t released details on the cause of death.

The Southern Illinoisan reported that he has only indicated that Rath’s body was brought to the surface and he was pronounced

dead at the mine at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Production at the mine has stopped while the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals investigate the accident.

Hunters harvest 86,711 deer during firearm season

SPRINGFIELD – Hunters in Illinois harvested more than 85,000 deer during the seven-day firearm season – a more than 10 percent increase over last year.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday said preliminary totals show 86,771 deer were harvested during the season that ended Sunday. During the seven-day period in 2014 there were 76,575 deer harvested.

Department data show the biggest harvests were in Adams, Jackson, Randolph, Pike and Jo Daviess counties.

And the hunting season isn’t over yet.

Illinois’ archery deer hunting season lasts until Jan. 17, and muzzleloader-only season runs Friday through Sunday.

Late-winter antlerless-only deer hunting seasons are scheduled for Dec. 31 to Jan. 3 and Jan. 15-17.

U.S. Muslim women debate safety of hijab amid backlash

By RACHEL ZOLL The Associated Press NEW YORK – On the night of the California shootings, Asifa Quraishi-Landes sat on her couch, her face in her hands, and thought about what was ahead for her and other Muslim women who wear a scarf or veil in public.

The covering, or hijab, often draws unwanted attention even in the best of times.

But after the one-two punch of the Paris and San Bernardino attacks by Islamic militants, and amid an anti-Muslim furor stoked by comments of Donald Trump, Quraishi-Landes, an Islamic law specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, wanted to send a message.

“To all my Muslim sisters who wear hijab,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “If you feel your life or safety is threatened in any way because of your dress, you have an Islamic allowance (darura/necessity) to adjust your clothing accordingly. Your life is more important than your dress.”

Amid a reported spike in harassment, threats and vandalism directed at American Muslims and at mosques, Muslim women are intensely debating the duty and risks related to wearing their head-coverings as usual.

Sites for Muslim women have posted guidance on how to stay safe. Hosai Mojaddidi, co-founder of the educational group MentalHealth4Muslims, drew nearly 4,000 likes for her Facebook post advising women to “pull out those hooded sweatshirts, beanies, hats and wraps for a while until the dust settles.”

Muslimgirl.net posted a “Crisis Safety Manual for Muslim Women,” with tips such as wearing a turban instead of a longer more obviously religious scarf and carrying a rape whistle.

Muslim women in several cities are organizing or taking self-defense classes. The ad for one such class in New York features a drawing of a covered woman in a karate stance.

“We’re getting so many calls,” said Rana Abdelha-

mid, 22, founder of the Women’s Initiative for Self-Empowerment, which offers self-defense and empowerment classes in several cities for young Muslim and Jewish women who face harassment.

Abdelhamid, a New York native attending the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, said she had studied karate since childhood and started offering self-defense classes for women after a man tried to pull off her headscarf when she was 16 years old.

“Even now when I think about that moment — I have a lot of anxiety moving through the streets to this day — especially with all of the hateful rhetoric because, I don’t know, is it going to happen again?” she said.

The question of whether to wear the hijab is already deeply sensitive for Muslim women. Scholars have debated for years whether women have a religious obligation to dress a particular way.

And Muslims disagree over whether the hijab is a symbol of piety or oppression.

Substance, not rhetoric, for president SHAW MEDIA EDITORIAL Being president of the United States is a job for an adult.

It requires leadership, a sharp understanding of all things foreign and domestic, a desire to foster relationships, the ability to solve problems, being able to work well with others, and the willingness to compromise for the good of the American people.

Yet, the candidate leading the Republican side of the race for president hasn’t demonstrated any of these qualities during his campaign. It seems the more outrageous Donald Trump acts, the more support he garners.

On Monday, Trump called “for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

Before that, Trump talked about requiring all Muslims to register as part of a national database and about closing mosques he said preach hate.

Someone get this man a copy of the First Amendment.

During his campaign for president, he also has insulted the looks of fellow candidates, accused Mexico of sending its rapists to America, and demonstrated a clear lack of the maturity needed to be this nation’s leader.

Enough is enough. This isn’t about whether you are conservative or liberal. This isn’t about far-left and far-right policies. It’s not about the establishment and anti-establishment. This is about taking seriously the process of choosing the next president of the United States.

In fairness to Trump, political newcomer Ben Carson, also a Republican candidate for president, has made disparaging remarks about Muslims (“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation”) and Syrian refugees (“If there’s a rabid dog running around in your neighborhood, you’re probably not going to assume something good about that dog”).

It’s time Americans start paying attention to substance, not fiery rhetoric. The Iowa caucuses are less than two months away. Illinois’ primary is in March.

A lot can happen between now and then, but what must happen is the American people start looking at the issues, learn about the candidates and then vote for qualified adults when your primary election rolls around.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Protect funds to provide energy assistance for the most vulnerable

To the Editor: The General Assembly just passed and the governor signed a bill that released nearly $3 billion of already-collected money sitting in dedicated funds.

Among these are utility ratepayer contributions to the Illinois Supplemental Low-Income Energy Assistance Fund (SLEAF), which supplements the federal LIHEAP program. These ratepayer contributions are collected through our utility bills and placed in a public trust for the exclusive purpose of helping our state’s elderly, people with special needs, veterans, and poor pay the high cost of heat and electricity. I commend the General Assembly and governor for finally releasing

these funds as the winter months approach.

Despite this step forward, the bigger budget discussion continues, and these funds still are in danger. These SLEAF funds are not General Revenue Funds, and they should be off the table as Springfield considers solutions to the current fiscal year and Fiscal 17 budgets.

These funds, combined with the federal funds, only satisfy a small fraction of the state’s overall need. The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity estimated that under current state and federal funding levels, LIHEAP would help only 35 percent of the approximately 926,000 eligible households in Illinois this year.

The SLEAF fund also helps keep all ratepayers’ bills lower by

reducing the “uncollectables” the utilities recover in everyone’s rates.

Given the escalating utility costs, the harsh Illinois winters our residents have had to endure in recent years, and the ongoing hardships because of the budget stalemate and slow economic recovery, these funds are needed more than ever.

Challenging fiscal decisions must be made; however, any budget solutions cannot include consideration of redirecting these much-needed funds into the General Revenue Fund, or reallocating any portion of these funds. It is imperative that the Illinois SLEAF, which aids our most vulnerable residents, be protected.

LOCKPORT – Josh Oster knew his talented incoming class of freshmen would be good, but usually it takes a while for newcomers to transition to high-level competition.

But just a few weeks into the season, the Lockport wres-

tling coach has liked what he’s seen from a group that is off a combined 49-9 start and played a key role in their team’s victory over Lincoln-Way West in a clash of two of the state’s best in their respective classes.

The Porters, who are ranked fourth in Class 3A, improved to 12-2 after winning the final eight matches

to defeat the Warriors, who are third in Class 2A, 42-15 in Thursday’s nonconference dual meet.

“We wrestle a very good schedule, and West is probably the best team on the other side of the conference, and hopefully they get a good draw that lets them get a state trophy this year, because they deserve

one,” Oster said. “At the beginning of the year, there’s always some consistency things, but after last Thursday’s meet with Joliet West, multiple coaches challenged our kids on just competing and they’ve done that since that point.

“This was probably one of our most complete duals as a team. When a team has three

During my postgame conversation with Lewis women’s basketball coach Kristen Gillespie on Wednesday night, University of St. Francis coach Samantha Quigley walked past.

Minutes earlier, the Flyers had secured a 73-61 victory over the Saints at Neil Carey Arena, a result that left both teams with 9-1 records. Both are nationally ranked, Lewis in NCAA Division II and USF in NAIA Division II. Gillespie has a good idea what the Saints will face on the NAIA trail, and she did not hesitate in her assessment of what Quigley’s team is capable of accomplishing.

“I want to be the first to say it,” Gillespie said to Quigley. “Like I just mentioned to [this reporter], you are not going to face another Jess (Kelliher, Lewis’ outstanding freshman). And, every game you play, you will have the most athletic guards on the floor. You can win the national championship.”

The Gillespies and Quigleys, of course, are among the first families of local sports, with basketball one of the featured components of their legacies. The mutual respect is evident, and well deserved.

“I’ve known Kristen for a long time,” Quigley said.

“Goose (Gordon Gillespie Jr., Kristen’s uncle and one of her assistants) we’ve known forever. We’re very close to them. And, our girls have Gordie’s initials on their uniforms.”

That was a reference to late legendary coach Gordie Gillespie, who died early this year. His coaching successes at Lewis and St. Francis, plus at Joliet Catholic, have been well documented. Quigley said there was a special feeling when she entered Neil Carey Arena, where the wall honoring Gillespie is in plain view at the gymnasium entrance.

“The Lewis program is in good hands with Kristen,” Quigley said. “It’s really cool the way the Gillespies have been such a gift to this area.

It’s neat that we get to play against each other.”

“It is kind of crazy playing against Sam,” Gillespie said. “I coached against her in scrimmages when I was at Benedictine. She’s a very good coach. What she has done with their program is remarkable. With her coaching and their athletic guards, they can win a national championship.”

First things first, however.

The Saints will take what they learned from the step up in competition and apply it to the rest of the season.

“I told our girls after the

game that we are preparing for something bigger,” Quigley said. “This game will help prepare us for the tough teams in our conference.”

The Saints did not shoot particularly well against Lewis, and hitting only 6 of 25 from 3-point range against a quality opponent will not cut it. But they did play hard.

“St. Francis is always scrappy,” Lewis senior guard Alyssa Dengler said. “Ever since I’ve been here, it’s been a dogfight against them.”

The Flyers, meanwhile, are busy piecing things together in the wake of devastating injuries to two starting guards, Tiana Karopulos and All-American Jamie Johnson.

Karopulos has a dislocated shoulder and could be back

by early January. Johnson tore an ACL and is lost for the season.

“We’re getting better playing without Jamie,” Dengler said. “It hasn’t been easy, but we’re getting better.”

“Jamie not only was averaging 24 points, she also was averaging seven assists,” Gillespie said. “She is very unselfish. She is our best leader. She did a little of everything. It will take time, but we have to come to terms with not having her.”

On the other hand, opportunity knocks.

“Everyone has a chance to step up now,” Gillespie said.

“We may not beat anyone by 30 points anymore. We will have to grind out some 10- or 12-point wins.”

Gillespie noted that when Karopulos returns, that will provide a lift to the Flyers.

“Tiana did the little things that made us go,” she said.

“So that’s been a big loss, too.”

Even without Johnson, you wonder where these Flyers may be come March.

As Quigley noted, Kelliher may be the freshman of the year in Division II, and when you combine her presence with senior Mariyah Brawner-Henley, Lewis’ post game is as good as any.

Besides, as Quigley will attest, the Flyers have the coach in Gillespie who can guide them to a promised land.

By JEFF DeGRAW ROMEOVILLE – In a Southwest Prairie Conference wrestling matchup between Minooka and Romeoville, it was all Minooka on Thursday night.

The Indians recorded eight pins on the way to a 75-0 win.

“We are a very young team on the mat, dominated by freshmen and sophomores,” Minooka coach Bernie Ruettiger said. “We have put this team through the meat grinder with our schedule so far. If you mention a good team in Illinois high school wrestling, we have probably wrestled them.

“Tonight shows these kids that the schedule they have prepares them. We respect everyone and I know Romeoville is young like we are. None of this would be possible without the excellent coaching staff that we have at Minooka. The assistants are such a big part of everything we do.”

The match started at 160 pounds, and the Indians’ Tyler Haase got things rolling with a second-period pin.

Senior Kenny Kirkland, wrestling at 170, recorded a

22-second pin over the Spartans’ Fabian Mariscal. Kirkland will drop back to the 160 weight class when senior Carson Oughton returns to the lineup. Oughton is ranked third in the state in Class 3A according to Illinois Matmen’s GEI rankings. Ruettinger hopes to have Oughton back in January.

Kirkland also was wrestling in his first match after recovering from an injury.

“It was good to get back out there,” he said. “We have a young team this year with only Carson (Oughton) and I as the only seniors. If we continue the work it will pay off at the end of the season.”

“We have wrestled the best teams so far this season with our schedule,” he said. “I’m really excited about the possibilities we have as we move forward. This is a really closeknit group. Yes, we are young, but with our two seniors, we have great leadership.”

By RONALD BLUM The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Baseball executives headed home Thursday with top free-agent sluggers still on the market and trade talk percolating that could lead to more swaps in coming weeks.

Outfielder Jason Heyward and first baseman Chris Davis figure to strike the largest deals among hitters. The top pitchers already have signed, with David Price getting a $217 million, seven-year contract with Boston and Zack Greinke a $206.5 million, six-year deal with Arizona.

“I think the market is wait-

ing to see what happens with Jason Heyward,” said Arizona general manager Dave Stewart, who finalized Greinke’s deal and acquired Shelby Miller during the meetings.

Dan Duquette, the Baltimore Orioles’ executive vice president for baseball operations, thinks it is clear why pitchers were pursued first.

“There’s more teams chasing fewer players in that market. Supply and demand,” he said.

Teams announced 10 trades and 11 free agent signings at the meetings, and several more free agents reached agreements that have not yet been announced.

LAKE FOREST – Matt Forte approached the reality of turning 30 years old with a tinge of humor.

“I’m dead. I’m an old man.

I feel like I’m so old, man,” the Bears’ running back said with a smirk. “Yesterday, I was 29, running around all practice.

Today, it took me like one extra minute to get going. It’s taking a toll on me.”

Humor is how he has dealt in recent weeks with the dancing concerns about his health and future, the inevitable ones that target all running backs who turn the big 3-0.

Players at the position last an average of three years. Of course, the good ones stick around longer, and Forte is one of three running backs in the top 10 in rushing yards per game who are 30 years old, joining Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson. Jonathan Stewart, ranked sixth, will turn 29 next spring. Forte is seventh at 75.1 yards a game.

“He’s doing some things that I haven’t seen many running backs be able to do because he’s so good in all three

Forte has long been touted as a perfectionist in how he takes care of his body. He said he’d like to play between 10 and 12 seasons before retiring.

“As long you take care of your body,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of people praying for me, and I pray a lot, too.”

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Miniya Thompson of Joliet feels black girls are often afraid to dream big dreams because they’re afraid they won’t succeed.

It’s a bold statement from a girl who won’t turn 10 until January. But Miniya, who will play Clara in Wheatland Dance Theater’s production of “The Nutcracker,” has bold ambitions, which she hopes will inspire other girls.

“If you work hard and keep your head straight, you never know what will come your way,” said Miniya, who plans to be a professional ballet dancer. “People will notice that you have passion and commitment.”

In fact, Miniya – who studies at Plainfield Dance Academy – wishes more black girls would veer toward ballet instead of hip-hop.

“I think anyone can jump around,” Miniya said, “but not everyone can understand ballet until they’ve done it.”

She wants to study dance in Paris or at Juilliard in New York, said Miniya’s mother, Valynda Gildon, of Joliet. Gildon said she and Miniya’s father, Greg Thompson, of Joliet are confident Miniya will do just that.

“Miniya has always been a hard worker,” Gildon said. “If she can’t get it, she tries harder.”

Corinne Emmenegger, owner of Plainfield Dance Academy and artistic director of Wheatland Dance Theater, said in the 18 months since Miniya came to her studio, Miniya has rapidly advanced in dance technique, one of the reasons Emmenegger chose Miniya for the role of Clara, Emmenegger said.

Although Miniya loves piano, she loves dancing more. It makes her feel free, she said.

“In piano, you just sit down and play music. It sounds beau-

tiful,” Miniya said. “But with dance, you listen for beautiful music and then you dance to it by making your body move and expressing the story.”

Gildon isn’t surprised that Miniya wants to use her suc-

cesses to motivate other girls.

Even in kindergarten, Miniya looked out for and supported her peers. Gildon recalled one classmate with spina bifida. All the children treated her with kindness, until recess.

“The teacher told me that no one wanted to wait for the girl with spina bifida. They just went out and played,” Gildon said. “Miniya always waited for her.”

Vaudevileins to host EP-release party 29 JOLIET – After their previous band Deconstructing Jim broke up while working on a studio album, Jeff Julian (vox and guitar) and Brennen Chouinard (drums) decided to release some of the songs written

by Julian under a new name: Vaudevileins (pronounced Vaude-villains).

The album, which was en-

gineered, mixed, and mastered

by Jeff Halland in Minneapolis, turned out so well that the duo decided that they wanted to keep playing together. They enlisted Bill Aldridge and Andrew Payne to complete the lineup, and since then the band has toured and released records from their dual home bases of Chicago and Joliet.

Now in its fifth year, the band is releasing a five-song

EP and a 10-song LP in the span of five months. The band’s fulllength, as yet untitled, album also will be a vinyl release – a first for the band.

Victor Mollo, who was born in Russia but lived most of his life in London, wrote many stories about bridge-playing fauna. Mollo died in 1987, but some years later, a cache of unpublished articles was found, enough for four books. The final collection, “Last Call in the Menagerie” (Master Point Press), appeared earlier this year.

All of these books feature unusual deals with some instructive elements and humorous narrative. The main character is the acerbic Hideous Hog, who knows how to get the best out of his partners and worst out of his opponents. In this deal, the Hog sat North, and his partner was the Rueful Rabbit, a very weak player who was born under a lucky star.

In this rubber-bridge deal, the Rabbit ended in five hearts. How did he plan the play after West led the spade king?

The Hog had carefully hidden his spade ace between the four and five.

He was worried that East would be void in spades and did not want the Rabbit to waste the ace.

So, West took the first trick and continued with the spade queen.

Then, as the Rabbit pulled the four into the middle of the table, the ace jutted out.

The Rabbit ruffed, cashed his heart ace, played a heart to the queen, discarded a club on the spade ace, ruffed the third round of clubs in his hand, returned to the dummy with a trump, and discarded a diamond on the club eight – the only way to make the contract.

Anyone taking warfarin should be regularly monitored with a blood test called a protime/ INR. This test tells if the blood is thinned just the right amount. The dose of warfarin is adjusted depending on the result.

The effects of warfarin on blood clotting can be influenced by other drugs you may be taking. For example, some antibiotics and antifungal drugs increase warfarin’s blood-thinning ability; others do the opposite. So be sure the doctor who is prescribing warfarin knows if you start a new medicine or stop an old one.

Dear Dr. K: I recently had a stent placed and am now taking warfarin. I hear this medicine causes bleeding. Is it really necessary for me to take it?

Dear Reader: Warfarin is an anticoagulant, or blood thinner. It decreases your blood’s ability to clot. There are times when we need our blood to form clots. If we cut our skin and it starts bleeding, or if an ulcer in our stomach starts bleeding, we need the bleeding to stop. When the blood forms clots, bleeding stops.

On the other hand, some conditions tend to increase the tendency of the blood to clot. Some people inherit genes that make their blood clot more easily. A stent in an artery of the heart, like you have, makes the blood clot more easily.

Stents are wire mesh cylinders that open up the middle of an artery that is partially blocked by cholesterol-rich plaque, or atherosclerosis.

Widening the artery improves the flow of blood to a part of the heart. However, if a clot forms inside the stent, it can cause the very thing the stent is supposed to prevent: a heart attack.

For that reason, people are given any of several “blood-thinning” drugs to reduce the risk of clots for at least a year after a stent is placed.

Blood-thinning drugs other than warfarin are often used.

You might ask the doctor who prescribed the warfarin why he or she chose that particular blood thinner.

My guess is that you have another condition that is best treated with warfarin. That could be the irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation, an artificial

I would be more concerned with whether they consider your playing Prince Charming to be inappropriate. At 6, I see no harm in it. When Becca is 8 or 9, your wife may have a point. Of course, by then she may prefer to be Supergirl rather than a princess, and have other objectives than being a bride.

As to kissing your granddaughter hello or goodbye, that’s perfectly appropriate regardless of her age. And when you do, I seriously doubt anyone will mistake you for a predator.

Dear Abby: I married the woman of my dreams two months ago. I asked my father to be my best man and he accepted, but he didn’t fulfill his duties. There was no bachelor party, no best man speech, and he and my mother left the reception after only an hour. I was hurt and disappointed.

Dear Abby: I made a big mistake three years ago.

When I found out my husband was cheating on me, I became vengeful and sought revenge.

I ended up sleeping with my sister-in-law’s boyfriend to get back at my husband and at her for some things she did in the past. It took my pain away – for a bit.

Abby, I am not this kind of person. I’m not an evil, conniving tramp. I regret what I did every day, and I feel like garbage.

My sister-in-law and I haven’t spoken since I decided to tell her the truth. My husband and I (miraculously) were able to work through our problems, and our relationship is stronger than ever. My sister-in-law and her boyfriend have remained together, and I don’t speak to him anymore either.

What can I do to earn forgiveness? Is this even forgivable? How can I mend this family I helped tear apart? –
