By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Grant’s Appliances apparently is set to reopen Thursday for a going-out-ofbusiness sale, while customers who spent money before the stores shut down in October still don’t know if they will see the merchandise they paid for.

Many of them say they lost money on appliances never delivered after Grant’s Appliances shut down in October with no explanation until the Illinois Attorney General announced the stores would be distributing its assets to pay off creditors.

Signs have been posted in store windows in Joliet and Aurora saying a sale on all items in the stores starts Thursday.

Joy Tinsman of New Lenox who paid more than $20,000 for appliances that never were delivered, said she and her husband expect a trip to the store Thursday probably will be a “lost cause.”

Judge recommends shutting down Elwood rail crossing

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com An administrative law judge has ruled a controversial railroad crossing in Elwood an “immediate safety concern” and recommends shutting it down.

The ruling is preliminary, and a final decision on the future of the Walter Strawn Drive crossing is expected from the Illinois Commerce Commission in January or February.

But the ruling was greeted with immediate enthusiasm from the Village of Elwood, which issued a news release quoting Police Chief Fred Hayes calling it a “victory for safety.”

The ICC, which governs the state’s railways, decided earlier this year to reopen a 2001

case brought forward by the village of Elwood amid safety concerns at the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing. Crossing gates were broken nearly 50 times last year, and Village of Elwood officials have tried for some time to steer semitrailer traffic away from the area.

Administrative Law Judge Latrice Kirkland-Montague issued a recommendation Tuesday that the crossing close temporarily while a more permanent solution is found.

During ICC hearings over the past several months, officials from Union Pacific, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Elwood and the ICC all have urged Kirkland-Montague to temporarily close the crossing while a long-term solution is worked out.

But CenterPoint Properties,

the developer of two nearby intermodals, has objected on the grounds that the state – if it were to close the crossing – would not be taking into account the dangers of diverting thousands of trucks to other local roads and railroad crossings and adding miles of driving time to truck routes.

All parties will have 14 days to respond before the administrative law judge issues her final recommendation to the full ICC board.

Michael Scotti, attorney for CenterPoint Properties, said Wednesday he and his client potentially could file a brief to the judge, but that has yet to be decided.

LOCAL BRIEF Public invited to party for Plainfield fire chief

PLAINFIELD – A celebration will be held Thursday for Plainfield Fire Protection District Chief John Eichelberger, who will retire Jan. 2 after 40 years of service in the district.

The celebration starts at 11:30 a.m. in the fire district headquarters, 23748 W. 135th St. in Plainfield. The fire district will serve a luncheon buffet, and special presentations will start at 1 p.m.

The event is open to the public, a fire district spokesperson said.

Of Eichelberger’s 40 years with the district, he spent the past 30 as the fire chief.

Deputy Fire Chief David Riddle will take over Jan. 1.

Will County executive outlines plans for area to Joliet Chamber

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Executive Larry Walsh reaffirmed his commitment to keeping downtown Joliet as the county seat during Wednesday’s Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry luncheon.

“While we understand that in planning for our future there will be many variables and uncertainty, please know that I remain committed to this partnership,” Walsh told a roomful of local business leaders during his chamber luncheon keynote speech.

“We have demonstrated this by making strategic investments in downtown Joliet to ensure government efficiency and strengthen our economic future.”

Walsh gave his speech, billed as a “state of the county” address, for the chamber at Harrah’s Casino in downtown Joliet.

While Walsh and several County Board members stand firm behind the belief that a new courthouse should be located downtown, others – especially Republicans – believe the county could save money in construction costs by building elsewhere on a green site.

Although a new courthouse facility is years away, much of the county’s plan for a downtown judicial complex hinged on the $4 million acquisition this summer of First Midwest Bank – which sits west of the current courthouse.

The bank purchase also was key in moving forward the county’s master plan for improving its core downtown facilities, including the construction of a new courthouse, Walsh told the chamber.

“I think we can all agree about the need for a new courthouse. Our current courthouse has outlived its

Taking over the bank building at Ottawa and Jefferson streets will allow the county to consolidate county departments. Moving forward, the bank building’s second and third floors will temporarily house the Will County Sheriff’s Office, now housed at the Eagle Building on Washington Street and the Court Annex building on Ottawa.

Renovations at the former Social Security Administration building, 158 N. Scott St., are nearing completion, too, Walsh said, allowing the county to move the recorder

of deeds and coroner’s offices there in January.

As far as the bank property goes, First Midwest Bank President Jim Roolf said it’s in the county’s interest for the bank to move out sooner rather than later.

“I’m sure Larry would want me to hand over the keys to the first floor soon, too,” Roolf said, who joined county officials at the 50 W. Jefferson St. bank site later Wednesday for a ceremonial transfer of ownership of the bank’s upper floors to the county.

Under the First Midwest Bank purchasing contract, the bank can pay rent to the county and continue operating on the first floor until 2017, or until it finds a new

location, Roolf said after Walsh’s speech.

First Midwest Bank is just as committed to the downtown area as Will County is, Roolf said. He said the bank plans to relocate elsewhere in downtown, but a final site has not been decided.

He declined to comment on specific locations Wednesday, but noted the possibility of renovating or expanding First Midwest’s existing facility at Webster and Chicago streets.

Building new on a yet-to-bedetermined site is also a very real possibility, he said.

Russ Slinkard, chief executive officer and president for the chamber, said he was pleased to hear Walsh affirm his commitment to downtown

Joliet. “[Keeping the courthouse downtown] is key,” Slinkard said. “It really is key. If we’re really going to invigorate downtown, the courthouse needs to be here.”

Having a new courthouse built downtown will be important in drawing more businesses to Joliet, Slinkard said.

Moving the coroner’s administrative office to the former Social Security Administration building frees up space in the Emco Building, 57 N. Ottawa St. The Emco Building, also known as the Court Annex, houses the state’s attorney’s office and could one day serve as space for the public defender’s office.

‘She told you how it was’ Topinka remembered in Will and Grundy counties

Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka was remembered Wednesday in Will and Grundy counties as someone who could get things done, a model for women in politics and even an inspiration for a sixth-grader many years ago in a school in Berwyn.

Topinka, 70, died early Wednesday from complications from a stroke.

Topinka “paved the way for women to enter politics,” said state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris.

“Her personality lit up any room she walked into,” Rezin said.

“She told you how it is. She never sugar-coated anything.

People appreciated that,” Rezin said in a statement. “Her ability to reach across the aisle to get things done, while keeping the best interest of the taxpayers always on her mind, is a model for what public service should be.”

Will County Board member Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, said Topinka’s emphasis on working for her constituents was a model for her.

“She was a big supporter of other women in politics, which was very inspiring. It’s not

a man’s field, but sometimes there is still that perception.

She showed you could be assertive,” Freitag said.

Freitag said it was evident during her time working in Springfield that Topinka was “loved on both sides of the aisle.”

Will County Executive Larry Walsh said he was “deeply saddened” to hear the news of Topinka’s death.

“Judy was a wonderful lady and always upbeat,” he said.

Walsh served in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2005 – while Topinka was serving as the state treasurer.

“Even though she was on the other side of the aisle, we always got along very well,” Walsh said. “I could always stop in her office if I needed some help.”

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said a “bright light has gone out in Illinois” with the comptroller’s death.

“Judy Baar Topinka was fair, she was responsible, and she was fun. I will miss her,” McGuire said in a statement.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Judy Baar Topinka built a pioneering political career on a salty sense of humor and penny-pinching personality, making a name for herself as a moderate Republican unafraid to break party lines as she endeared herself to Illinois voters for more than three decades.

Just weeks after being

re-elected to watch over the state’s checkbook as Illinois comptroller, Topinka died early Wednesday from complications of a stroke. She was 70.

Her victory in November became the last chapter in a political career like few others in state history. Topinka was the only woman to hold two different statewide offices, having also served as three-term state treasurer after several years in the Illinois Legislature. In 2006, she was

Illinois’ GOP chairman and nominee for governor, but lost her bid to become the state’s first female chief executive to Democrat Rod Blagojevich.

Her moxie even helped her remain popular – and in office – during a period in the 2000s when she was the lone Republican statewide officeholder in a Democratic stronghold.

Authorities say driver in crash with off-duty officer was intoxicated

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Authorities say a driver killed in a crash last month with an off-duty Joliet police officer was intoxicated.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Wednesday that toxicology results show Rashad J. Stinson, 24, had a blood alcohol content of .093, and methamphetamine and marijuana in his system when he died.

About 3:30 a.m. Nov. 13, Stinson was driving a Pontiac Bonneville south on Larkin Avenue when he appeared to cross into the northbound lane near Dellmar Street, police said. Police Chief Brian Benton said crash reports show the Bonneville was traveling more than 60 miles an hour when it struck a GMC Yukon head-on.

Stinson had to be extricated from his car by firefighters and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Yukon, Raul Alvarez, 38, a sergeant in the Joliet Police Department, was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and underwent surgery for fractures to his right foot and ankle.

Benton said blood tests showed Alvarez, who was off-duty and driving his own vehicle, was not intoxicated.

Alvarez was reportedly on his way to meet another officer at Dunkin’ Donuts. The crash closed part of Larkin Avenue for nearly six hours while police investigated.

Police crash reports do not indicate where Stinson was going to or coming from.

His blood alcohol content was above the .08 limit for driving under the influence.

Benton said Wednesday Sgt. Alvarez will require another surgery before he returns to duty.

Dominic Fichera, an attorney representing Stinson’s family, said Wednesday a lawsuit will be filed on his behalf.

The appointments were a result of public outcry over several controversial decisions made by a majority on the board consisting of commissioners Peter Hurtado,

Peter Steinys and Janet Silosky. When the board formed in May 2013, the majority immediately hired Garrett Peck, a village trustee, as the executive director.

Several of Peck’s decisions led to board meetings swelling with residents calling for Peck’s and the three commissioners’ res-

ignations. The situation was so dire for Cross, Bertino-Tarrant and Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, that they attempted to dilute the majority by co-sponsoring the bill.

Poling said she found out about the seat this summer through her neighbor, Michael Bran, a previous board

president of the park district.

“I told him I would be interested in running in the next elections,” Poling said.

“He thought I would be good at this.”

Poling applied for the position through Cross’ office. After an interview with Cross, she was selected.

Then she started catching up on the park district’s issues through meeting minutes and news stories.

“After I understood what was going on, I felt that all the skills and experience I had would be even more beneficial,” said Poling, who will be running for the seat in the spring elections. “[Poling] is very helpful, talented and knowledgeable,” board President Mary Kay Ludemann said. “It’s very nice to finally have seven people.”

Judges donate campaign funds to United Way

Jeff Allen, Carla Alessio Policandriotes, Amy Bertani-Tomczak, Paula Gomora, Sarah Jones, Susan O’Leary and Richard Schoenstedt all handily retained their seats as Will County Circuit Court judges last month.

While judges can raise money to advertise when they are up for retention, they cannot keep a campaign fund once they are elected. Nor can they return what they raised to

their donors.

“But we are allowed to give it to a charity and we all agreed, instead of spending money on another mailing, it’d benefit Will County more to provide it to United Way,” Schoenstedt said.

“It also prevents any concerns about hearing cases [regarding] someone who receives assistance from a particular charity,” Alessio Policandriotes noted.

The judges presented a $10,000 check Tuesday to United Way of Will County President Mike Hennessy and fundraising campaign chairman Jim Roolf.

PLAINFIELD – The installation of new commissioner Wednesday marked the close of a tumultuous era for the Plainfield Township Park District.

Plainfield resident Ridgley Ann “Mimi” Poling was officially sworn in to the park district board as the seventh commissioner after being appointed by Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego.

Cross and Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, were allowed to each select a commissioner to expand the park district board from five members to seven, due to the passage of House Bill 5593 on Aug. 15.

Last month, Plainfield resident Rob Ayres was sworn in as the sixth commissioner after being selected by Bertino-Tarrant.

Poling, a landscape design business owner and former adjunct professor at Joliet Junior College, said she hopes to use her expertise to move the park district forward.

“I think I can bring a lot of experience in landscape, horticulture ... and personnel management,” Poling said, adding that she also

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet police warn of man posing as city employee

JOLIET – Police say a burglar claimed to be a water department employee to victimize a senior Tuesday.

Police Chief Brian Benton said the 83-year-old victim answered the door about 3 p.m. in the 800 block of Plaza Drive to encounter a white man with short, dark hair appearing to be in his 30s or 40s.

“He identified himself as a water department employee who had to check the pipes and had the homeowner accompany him into the basement,” Benton said.

After going to the basement, the “inspector” went to get something from his truck and never returned, Benton said. The victim Tuesday night discovered that several items were missing from the house and notified police.

“We ask that everyone be very cautious when anyone comes to the door trying to get inside the house. Ask for identification and call the police if there is anything suspicious,” Benton said.

Boy injured in knife attack JOLIET – An 18-year-old man was arrested after allegedly cutting another teen with a knife Tuesday.

Police Chief Brian Benton said officers were called at 9:45 p.m. to the 600 block of Landau Avenue, where a 16-year-old boy told police he’d been attacked.

The teen was treated for a non-life-threatening cut to his neck, Benton said.

“He said he’d been near Columbia Street and Landau Avenue. His story changed repeatJorge A. edly, but he did identify a suspect Guzman by name,” Benton said.

Police reportedly found Jorge A. Guzman nearby and questioned him. Guzman admitted arguing with the victim and using a pocketknife during the struggle, Benton said.

Guzman, of the 500 block of South May Street, was booked into the Will County jail on a charge of aggravated battery.

Wilmington student arrested after threat

WILMINGTON – A high school student has been arrested after allegedly writing a threatening message on a bathroom wall.

Police Chief Phillip Arnold said Wilmington High School was on a soft lockdown for two hours Monday after the threat was reported. Arnold said the threat was unfounded, but prompted an investigation.

On Tuesday, Andrew Sterling, 20, a student of the school, was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

Joliet warns of IRS phone scam

JOLIET – Joliet police issued a warning Wednesday about a telephone scam with callers claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service.

Residents have reported callers claiming to be with the IRS are demanding immediate payment for taxes owed, according to the news release issued by the city.

According to the city, “The IRS reports that many targets of this scam are recent immigrants, and threats of arrest, deportation or revocation of driver’s licenses are used to intimidate the victims into paying over the phone.”

The city noted that the IRS always sends written notice by mail of any taxes due. Also, the IRS does not ask for credit cards, debit cards or prepaid cards over the phone.

City officials advised those who get such calls and do not owe taxes to report the calls to the office of the treasury inspector general for tax administration at 800-366-4484.

Anyone who owes taxes and gets such a call should call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to ask an IRS employee for help on a payment issue, the city said.

Henry R. Abraham, Sr., age 79, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully December 9, 2014, at his home.

Born March 26, 1935, in Peoria, Henry was a son of the late Harvey Russell and Rose (McManus) Abraham. He was raised in Peoria, and went on to honorably serve in the United States Army. On December 28, 1969, Henry married Carol James, and she preceded him in 1996.

Henry served as an auxiliary police deputy for the Will County Sheriff’s Office; retired from Caterpillar Joliet Plant in 1990, and after the death of his wife, Carol, in 1996, went to work at Whitmore Ace Hardware in Wilmington.

Henry loved to hunt and fish, as well as trap shoot. He enjoyed woodworking, collected guns, and in years past, took pleasure in model airplanes.

He held a private pilot’s license, and loved his plane and motorcycles.

Survivors include eight children, Henry R. “Rusty” Abraham, Jr. of Wilmington, Kathy (Brian) Dreher of Joliet, Barb DuBois of Williamsport, IN, Emerson (Marla) Abraham of Morton, Lori Meek (fiance, Randy Smith) of Williamsport, Diane (Scott) Gregory of Attica, IN; Peggy Abraham-Revis of Washington, Illinois and Kelly Shawn (Vivian) Abraham of East Peoria; 20 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; sisters, Rosalie Buckner, Doris Killingsworth and Joyce Derossett; brothers-in-law, Wayne James and Raymond James; and sisters-in-law, Betty Krichbaum and Linda Simmons.

Rauner’s team reviewing options after lottery deal

CHICAGO – State officials’ handling of an Illinois Lottery agreement became the latest bump in the handoff between gubernatorial administrations as Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner’s legal team said Wednesday it is weighing options to fight a contract termination deal signed by Gov. Pat Quinn that the Republican alleges hurts taxpayers.

Quinn’s office and lottery officials announced Tuesday they had officially ended the state’s contract with Chicago-based Northstar Lottery Group through an agreement. The private vendor didn’t reach the ambitious sales promises it used to win its bid in 2010 and the parties worked out long-term details to avoid costly lawsuits.

But Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf claimed the agreement was essentially a hefty new contract binding Illinois’ hands for years and eliminating the ability to collect penalties, which would equal lost revenue.

“It is essentially a state pardon for Northstar wrapped in taxpayer-funded giveaway,” Schrimpf said in a statement.

Lottery Director Michael Jones dismissed the claims, saying it was a good deal for the state.

McDonald’s to trim menu, examine ingredients

NEW YORK – McDonald’s is planning to trim its menu, review its cooking methods and maybe even get rid of some of the ingredients it uses to change perceptions that it serves junk food.

CEO Don Thompson sought to reassure investors Wednesday that such changes will help strengthen the chain’s appeal as it fights to hold onto customers.

The discussion in Oak Brook came after the company earlier this week reported yet another monthly decline in U.S. sales. It said the figure fell 4.6 percent at established locations in November.

Thompson has conceded McDonald’s Corp. has failed to keep up with changing tastes. One of the problems is that people are increasingly moving toward foods they feel are fresh or wholesome, and the image of fast-food burgers and fries doesn’t exactly fit that bill.

Among the changes Thompson and McDonald’s USA president Mike Andres touched on were ingredients and how food is prepared and delivered.

Dogs rescued from abandoned Kankakee house

KANKAKEE – Kankakee County animal control investigators have rescued three dogs from an

abandoned rural house.

The Kankakee Daily Journal reported officials discovered last week that Butters, a 3-year-old yellow lab, and her two puppies had been kept in the home without heat, much food or human contact for several months.

Officials said a volunteer donated money to cover the cost of Butters’ medications. The puppies have passed checkups and are up for adoption.

Uber removes driver accused of Chicago sex assault

CHICAGO – The ride-booking company Uber has removed a driver after a customer reported she was sexually assaulted during a ride in Chicago last month, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The report emerged as Uber faces new legal challenges to its background check claims in California.

Uber is cooperating with Chicago police in an investigation

into what company spokeswoman Jennifer Mullin called “an appalling and unacceptable incident.” The San Francisco-based company is “ready to assist [police] however we can to hold the perpetrator accountable,” she said.

The allegation from a police report was first made public Tuesday by the news website DNAinfo, which said a woman told police an Uber driver picked her up at a bar, asked her to get in the front seat and attacked her during the ride. She told police she blacked out, but remembered being in an apartment with the driver on top of her.

Chicago Police spokesman Jose Estrada said police have been in contact with the victim and Uber, and are continuing to investigate.

No one has been arrested.

The driver was working on the company’s low-cost UberX platform, Mullin said. The UberX platform allows customers to use

their smartphones to hail rides from individuals who drive their own vehicles. Those drivers pass the “exact same background check” that Uber requires of taxi drivers who hold city public chauffeur licenses, she said.

Illinois ‘lawsuit abuse’ target of ad campaign

SPRINGFIELD – A national business group has begun a campaign to shine a spotlight on what it calls “systemic lawsuit abuse” in the Illinois suburbs of St. Louis.

The U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform unveiled its campaign Tuesday. It focuses on Madison County courts’ “loose standards” for allowing asbestos-liability action by non-residents.

The effort will include television, billboard and online ads and direct mail.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Congress relaxes whole grain standards for schools WASHINGTON – Congress is taking some whole grains off the school lunch line.

A massive year-end spending bill released Tuesday doesn’t allow schools to opt out of healthier school meal standards championed by first lady Michelle Obama, as House Republicans had sought. But it would ease standards that require more whole grains in school foods.

The bill also would put off rules to make school meals less salty, suspending lower sodium standards that were supposed to go into effect in 2017.

Some school nutrition directors have lobbied for a break from the standards, which have been phased in since 2012, saying the rules have proven to be costly and restrictive. Some kids don’t like the meals, either. House Republicans have said the rules are an overreach, and have fought to ease them.

WASHINGTON – Americans may not agree on much lately, but one opinion is nearly universal: There’s almost no chance that President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and the Republican Congress can work together to

solve the country’s problems.

A new Associated Press-GfK poll finds just 13 percent of Americans are confident the leaders, separated by nearly 2 miles of Pennsylvania Avenue, can work together, while 86 percent have no such faith. That’s far more than the 58 percent who felt that way just after the 2010 midterm elections in which the tea party movement rose to prominence.

The doubts cross party lines: Fewer than 1 in 5 Democrats or independents have confidence the two sides can cooperate.

Republicans are even more pessimistic, with just 1 in 10 confident Obama and Congress can work together.

CIA fights back after torture report

By BRADLEY KLAPPER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Top spies past and present campaigned Wednesday to discredit the Senate’s investigation into the CIA’s harrowing torture practices after 9/11, battling to define the historical record and deter potential legal action around the world.

The Senate intelligence committee’s report doesn’t urge prosecution for wrongdoing, and the Justice Department has no interest in reopening a criminal probe. But the threat to former interrogators and their superiors was underlined as a U.N. special investigator demanded those responsible for “systematic crimes” be brought to justice, and human rights groups pushed for the arrest of key CIA and Bush administration figures if they travel overseas.

Current and former CIA officials pushed back, determined to paint the Senate report as a political stunt by Senate Democrats tarnishing a program that saved American lives. It is a “one-sided study marred by errors of fact and interpretation – essentially a poorly done and partisan attack on the agency that has done the most to protect America,” former CIA directors George Tenet, Porter Goss and Michael Hayden wrote in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

Hayden was singled out

by Senate investigators for what they said was a string of misleading or outright false statements he gave in 2007 about the importance of the CIA’s brutal treatment of detainees in thwarting terrorist attacks. He described the focus on him as “ironic on so many levels” as any wrongdoing predated his arrival at the CIA. “They were far too interested in yelling at me,”

The intelligence committee’s 500-page release concluded that the CIA inflicted suffering on al-Qaida prisoners beyond its legal authority and that none of the agency’s “enhanced interrogations” provided critical, life-saving intelligence. It cited the CIA’s own records, documenting in detail how waterboarding and lesser-known techniques such as “rectal feeding” were actually employed.

The CIA is now in the uncomfortable position of defending itself publicly, given its basic mission to protect the country secretly. Its 136-page rebuttal suggests Senate Democrats searched through millions of documents to pull out only the evidence backing up pre-determined conclusions.

“That’s like doing a crossword puzzle on Tuesday with Wednesday’s answer’s key,” the CIA said in an emailed statement.

Challenging one of the report’s most explosive argu-

ments – that harsh interrogation techniques didn’t lead to Osama bin Laden – the CIA pointed to questioning of Ammar al-Baluchi, who revealed how an al-Qaida operative relayed messages to and from bin Laden after he departed Afghanistan. Before then, the CIA said, it only knew that courier Abu Ahmad al-Kuwaiti interacted with bin Laden in 2001 when the al-Qaida leader was accessible to many of his followers. Al-Kuwaiti eventually led the U.S. to bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.

Poring over the same body of evidence as the investigators, the CIA insisted most of the 20 case studies cited in the Senate report actually illustrated how enhanced interrogations helped disrupt plots, capture terrorists and prevent another 9/11-type attack. The agency said it obtained legal authority for its actions from the Justice Department and White House, and made “good faith” efforts to keep congressional leaders informed.

Former state Sen. Richard Winkel says state statute suggests Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner will likely be tasked with ap-

pointing a new comptroller to a full term in 2015.

Winkel said Rauner could act as soon as he’s sworn into office Jan. 12.

Topinka accomplished it all with a style that made people smile and cringe – sometimes simultaneously. Outside of office, she treated her dogs to McDonald’s cheeseburgers, played accordion and loved to dance to polka music.

She was known to refer to opponents as “morons” and when she ran for governor, she accused Blagojevich of having “weasel eyes.” At her first inauguration, Topinka famously told a joke about flatulence.

Not one to toe the party line, she supported abortion rights and gay marriage, once offering gay couples her services as a flower girl – free of charge.

Her son, Joseph Topinka, was with her.

Topinka was born in 1944 to William and Lillian Baar, the children of Czech and Slovak immigrants. They lived in Riverside, near blue-collar Chicago suburbs that were centers for Eastern European immigrants. Lillian Baar ran a real estate business while William served in World War II, and continued to do so after his return.

Topinka’s father hammered home the message that she could pursue any career she wanted.

“He would always tell me, ‘Don’t be a clinging vine. A man neither needs nor wants that,’ ” she once told the AP. She also brought to public office a work ethic she learned from her parents and neighbors, who saved up and didn’t buy what they couldn’t afford, said Jack Kubik, a friend and a former state representative from the western suburbs. She frequently bragged about finding great deals at yard sales and thrift shops.

“She was very careful with other people’s money and balancing budgets was not just a punch line with her,” he said.

She earned a journalism degree from Northwestern University and became a reporter for a suburban Chicago newspaper chain. She married and had a son, but divorced in 1981 after 16 years.

Topinka described her job as comptroller as being a “skunk at a picnic” – a reference to the task of writing checks for a state that was billions of dollars on its bills. But she wore her reputation for being tight-fisted proudly.

“I was just on a hunt [in thrift stores] for a can-opener for my house in Springfield,” she told the AP during her final campaign.” If I don’t have to go out there and spend a lot of money, I won’t.”

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, said Topinka “knew how to get things done and was willing to do what it takes to get them done.

“She was a great public

servant with unlimited fight in her, not only for issues, but for people she believed in,” he said in a statement.

The lawsuit filed by CenterPoint and UP contended the barriers violated federal law and that Elwood was illegally interfering with interstate commerce and posed a threat to the rest of the region.

A call left with FirstMerit Bank was not returned. Calls to High Ridge Partners Inc. – the assignee for Grant’s assets – were not returned Wednesday.

Questions sent to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office were referred to High Ridge Partners Inc. Carla Bison of St. Charles, who spent $3,275 on appliances never delivered, said the Aurora location is making final sales, too. She plans to be there with her receipt and hopes she will get what she paid for.

“I paid for it. How can they sell stuff I paid for? It doesn’t seem fair,” she said.

Nurczyk, two Joliet customers, plan to be at the store Thursday but weren’t optimistic about getting money back or appliances either.

In November, the Illinois Attorney General’s Office announced Grant’s Appliances was undergoing an assignment for the benefit of creditors, which is similar to a bankruptcy.

The company owed money to creditors. A letter sent to customers from High Ridge Partners Inc. said Grant’s has twice as much debt as assets.

Bison said she has left numerous calls with the Attorney General’s Office, hoping for more information and support. But none of the calls have been returned. She said now would be a crucial time for the agency to get more involved.

“Where’s Lisa [Madigan] here? Why isn’t she helping us? She’s got a chance to step in and help consumers,” she said.

Unquestionably, Topinka dedicated to public service Before she was a politician, Judy Baar Topinka was an award-winning journalist.

Topinka, 70, died early Wednesday, less than a day after she suffered a stroke. She was the first woman in Illinois to serve in two state constitutional offices. She had just won re-election in November as state comptroller.

Topinka served the public as a journalist before devoting her life to public service as an elected official.

She attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and graduated in 1966. After graduation, she worked part time for the Berwyn, Cicero and Stickney-Forest View Life Newspapers before being hired full time in 1971. In her journalism career, Topinka was a reporter, education editor, feature writer, features editor and photographer. She won awards from the Illinois Women’s Press Association, the Illinois Press Association and the Illinois State Medical Society.

Topinka, a Republican, morphed into one of the most outspoken politicians in Illinois and was a trailblazer for women in politics.

“She was a professional public servant,” said state Sen. Pamela Althoff, R-McHenry.

“From the perspective of the Republican Party, she was a woman that spoke her mind, said what everyone wanted to say but was too afraid to say. It’s a significant loss, and we will miss her.”

Topinka, a lifelong Riverside resident, won election to the Illinois House in 1980. She moved to the state Senate in 1984. Ten years later, she was elected to the first of her three terms as state treasurer. In 2006, she unsuccessfully ran against Rod Blagojevich for Illinois governor. She returned to public office in 2010, when she was elected state comptroller.

During her gubernatorial bid in 2006, Topinka described Illinois as “a miraculously wonderful place to live.” But she also believed it was being hurt and abused by those in office, which is why she decided to run for governor.

“If I don’t stop it, I’d be complicit in watching it go down the tubes, and I don’t want to do that,” Topinka said.

In every stop along the way, Topinka had one thing in mind: making Illinois a great place to live. Her style might have been considered unorthodox. Her personality might have been off-putting to some. But her dedication to Illinois and public service can’t be questioned.

Help for pregnant students on campus VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez “How can a scared, pregnant student, one probably racked with anxiety and facing a totally unplanned situation, find the resources and support she needs to parent her child and continue her education?”

Kristan Hawkins both asks and answers the question. She’s the energetic young president of Students for Life of America. In her mind, abortion needs to be unthinkable. How does such a paradigm shift happen in a country where abortion has been legal for more than four decades?

Her group has just launched a “Pregnant on Campus” initiative.

The goal is to connect pregnant students with resources and support to help them get through school while being true parents to their children.

From her near-decade’s work with college students, Hawkins knows resources exist on many campuses, but students who need to know about them often don’t.

Pregnant on Campus groups hold baby showers and diaper drives for expectant mothers on their campuses. They volunteer at local pregnancy help centers

and help usher pregnant women through paperwork and bureaucracy. “This is one of the best programs we have ever started,” she said, “because it helps pregnant students in very tangible and practical ways and shows the college campus that the pro-life movement is very much pro-woman.”

A young woman “should never have to choose between her education and her child,” Hawkins tells me. But that’s the predominant message a pregnant college student hears. “Often, the message she sees is ‘have an abortion or drop out of school.’” It’s a false choice.

“For her and her child’s future and well-being, our goal should be to make sure she graduates school,” Hawkins said, adding that “a child born into poverty is seven times more likely to live in poverty his or her whole life.”

On 838 campuses across the U.S., Students for Life is prepared to activate a network of support for students in need, “to help her navigate the resources available at her college, help her find appropriate housing and financial aid, give her the emotional support she needs and help her through a possible difficult time in her life.”

That doesn’t mean anyone is sugarcoating anything. “It will certainly be a challenging journey, but there is real support and help for [pregnant students],” Beth

Rahal, Students for Life’s Pregnant on Campus coordinator, tells me.

What does that support look like?

“It depends on the student,” she said. The primary concerns tend to be finances, child care and housing. However: “Each story is unique. Some young women have the confidence, the support and the means to become a parenting student without too many hurdles.

However, for other women, they may be lacking the support of family and friends, or they may not be financially secure. We need to treat each woman’s situation differently and address her unique needs.”

Like any woman who finds herself unexpectedly with child, a pregnant college student must be “embraced with compassion,” Rahal said, and a look at the Pregnant on Campus website echoes that.

“We must stop judging the woman for why she is in this situation,” Rahal said. “She needs to know that you care about her.”

For men, too, the initiative’s message is: You’re not alone.

If people see that going to college and raising a child is doable, life happens and death ceases.

By TIM O’BRIEN Shaw Media Correspondent BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook junior guard Brittney Patrick knew their winless streak wouldn’t go on forever.

But still, getting that first win?

It sure felt good.

Winless through three games, Bolingbrook squeaked out a sloppy 53-44 win Wednesday night over Joliet Central in the SouthWest Suburban Blue.

“The win means it’s a fresh start for us,” Patrick said.

“We can start from here and build on this and get better the whole season.”

Patrick finished with 18 points to lead Bolingbrook (1-3, 1-0), with Karli Seay (12 points), Parris Bryant (eight points, 11 rebounds) and Alecia Gulledge (eight points) also contributing.

Joliet Central (3-5, 0-1) received a huge effort from junior guard Monica Barefield, who finished with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Morgan Jones (12 points, six rebounds) and Chantell Mack (11 rebounds) contributed for the Steelmen.

“We’re off the schneid a little bit, and that’s the big thing,” Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith said with a smile.

“We got that first win under our belt, and now we need to grow from it. We’re seeing the same mistakes over and over again.”

Having trailed by as many as seven points in the first quarter, it was Bolingbrook’s defense that sparked the comeback effort over the rest of the game.

Patrick scored on an easy fast-break score off a Gulledge steal to bring the Raiders within a point, 26-25, late in the second quarter.

After a Jazz-Min Arceneaux free throw tied the game, Patrick scored the go-ahead bucket on a fast break to close the second quarter.

Bolingbrook went on an extended 10-0 run over the second and third quarters to go up, 33-26, and would not trail again.

“We came out and needed to regroup,” Patrick said. “With the press we run, that gives us

energy. That defensive energy gets us going and gets us easy layups.”

Working with a three-point lead to start the fourth quarter, a Patrick free throw and a fast break lay-in off a steal at halfcourt re-established the lead for Bolingbrook.

The Raiders committed 21 turnovers overall, but their press helped force Joliet Central into 25 turnovers, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

“That’s where everything starts, with our defense,” Smith said. “Our offense is predicated on our defense.

We’ve got to get that mindset of playing pressure defense.”

The Raiders’ defense kept them in the game as some early struggles from the field put Bolingbrook in a 16-9 hole through the first quarter.

Seay’s 10 points in the second quarter helped Bolingbrook come back from the early deficit.

“We came in and had better energy,” said Seay, a sophomore guard. “We ran our plays the right way. Coming off the bench, I try to come out with energy, too, and try to help the team.”

Joliet Central finished 14 for 43 from the floor overall while struggling at the free throw-line, connecting on 13 of 29.

With the flu bug having wreaked havoc recently on the roster, Central coach Brian Reed is looking for the Steelmen to get back into that groove.

“We had some turnover issues tonight, but we’re still getting back in sync,” Reed said.

“The good thing is we played all four quarters. We played hard, and that’s the first step in a long season. We want to be committed and be better on defense.”

Despite wanting to have fun, Rydberg still wants to achieve her goals, one being short-term for next year. She hopes to have the opportunity to do an international competition and represent Team USA. To get to that level, Antensteiner said, Rydberg will have to stick to the regimen she is on and follow the process. So far, she has progressed on schedule.

“Paige has moved up one level every year since I’ve been coaching her,” Antensteiner said. “I’ve been coaching

her since she’s been a basic beginner [7 years old], and every year she has moved up through the levels. Next year, she won’t move up. She’ll stay as a junior, which is really common in our sport to stay back.

“She’ll develop her artistic skills more. By now, she has a lot of the technical skills that she needs, and we’ll continue to build on them. The big focus next year will be on her artistry and turning her into a lady versus a girl.

She’ll stay back another year while we work on that; and then the following year, she’ll move on to senior if everything goes as planned.”

To help develop those skills, Rydberg does ballet, dance and works with two choreographers. She sees choreographer Mary Beth Marley every day and

choreographer Scott Brown, who lives in Colorado, once or twice a month.

Rydberg focuses most of her time training for the sport because she wants to become a household name in the figure skating community. She also wants to help her single mother, who works 12 hours a day to pay for the expenses.

“I just want to be successful and be known, maybe have more sponsors,” Rydberg said.

“The sport is very expensive,” Antensteiner added. “The more successful you become in the sport, the more opportunities open up with sponsorship.

She knows that financially, this is very difficult for her mom. She’s aware of that, and I think what she’s trying to say is that she wants to be more known than she already is.”

Paige Rydberg follows her schedule five days a week. On two of those days, she adds off-ice conditioning, with Garrett Krug at Champion Sport Advantage in Willowbrook, to her busy schedule. And on Saturdays, the Romeoville freshman does not get to sleep until noon. She gets up at the same time and trains from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m.

The time spent training with coach Mary Alice Antensteiner and her team has helped the 15-year-old qualify for the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships for the third consecutive year.

“She’s had a stellar record and results,” Antensteiner said. “Second [place] last year was just one part of her long career where she’s had really good results. What separates her is that she’s naturally talented. She’s naturally coordinated and has natural balance.

That’s really important in figure skating. She’s got the right body shape and body size, which is also really important for skating.”

By placing second in regionals and fourth in sectionals, Rydberg earned a spot in this year’s nationals. In January, she will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, to vie for a medal in the junior level after earning the novice silver medal in 2014.

Since last year’s nationals, Rydberg made a huge jump from novice to juniors. As a novice skater, she could complete a triple salchow and triple toe loop. Now, she has all of her triple jumps, which include a triple loop, triple flip and triple lutz. She also does triple, triple combinations.

Rydberg hopes to continue her success at nationals in the future.

“I want to go there and do the best that I can, stay clean and leave there happy,” she said. “Hopefully, the podium. Anything could happen.

“At nationals as an intermediate, I took fifth; and as a novice, I got second.

In the future, I want to be a good senior lady, be on the podium and possibly do the Olympics and Worlds.”

Lewis honors: After being

ranked ninth in the preseason rankings, Lewis quickly moved to the No. 4 spot, then the No. 3 spot before taking over the No. 2 position Tuesday. The No. 2 rank is the highest in program history.

Lewis has been led by Jamie Johnson, who earned her second consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honor Monday. Johnson is ranked fourth in the nation in scoring at 23.6 points a game.

Johnson’s teammate, Mariyah Brawner-Henley, has five double-doubles through seven games. She led the nation in double-doubles last season.

Lewis honors: The American Volleyball Coaches Association ranked Lewis No. 9 in the NCAA Division II Preseason Poll. It marks the sixth consecutive season the Flyers were ranked in the preseason poll and the fourth time they were ranked in the preseason

The current squad features preseason All-American senior outside hitters Geoff Powell (first team) and Greg Petty (second team).

Powell hit .367 with 416 kills (3.89 per set) last season. Petty hit .328 with 357 kills (3.43 per set) and led the Flyers with 43 aces.

Lewis’ Chavez earns honors:

Lewis junior forward Jessica Chavez has been named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer All-Midwest Region third team.

Chavez finished with a team-high six goals while tying for the team lead in assists with four. She helped Lewis finish the regular season on a five-match unbeaten streak to qualify for the GLVC Tournament for the second time in three seasons.

This is Chavez’s second NSCAA All-Region honor of her career. She earned the same third-team honor last year.

“I’ve not been on this side since my days with the Angels, when I got an email in Italy that we had signed Vladimir Guerrero,” said Maddon, who was a coach in Anaheim before switching to Tampa Bay. “I think that definitely sends that message how Theo and the group feel about this particular group. But under-

stand, we have a lot of young players that have to grow up as quickly as possible. But having Jon there adds to the flavor and the possibility.”

The Cubs’ management is making over the team in a big way.

Chicago has a pending $20 million, two-year deal with right-hander Jason Hammel,

traded by the Cubs to Oakland last summer. Also Tuesday, the Cubs acquired All-Star catcher Miguel Montero from Arizona for minor league right-handers Jeferson Mejia and Zack Godley – a deal that added $40 million in payroll over the next three years.

Chicago’s rotation is likely to also include Jake Arrieta, Travis Wood, and Kyle Hendricks.

The Cubs also have a pair of All-Stars in the batting order in first baseman Anthony Rizzo and shortstop Starlin Castro and expect improved performances from young sluggers Javier Baez and Jorge Soler. Ahead is another wave of prospects that includes third baseman Kris Bryant and shortstop Addison Russell.

Maddon hopes an addition such as Lester helps change the mindset in the clubhouse when spring training starts in February.

“It definitely makes it more believable to everybody else in that room,” he said. “I’ll stand up and make the same speech regardless; but when you have it backed up by that particular kind of presence, it adds to it.”

Robertson, Sox finalize $46 million contract THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN DIEGO – David Robertson is looking forward to playing with Jeff Samardzija on the new-look White Sox. The Sox announced a $46 million, four-year contract with Robertson on Wednesday, giving the Sox a sorely needed presence at the back end of their bullpen after they had 21 blown saves last season, tied for seventh most in the majors.

The deal with the closer, who turns 30 in April, is the latest move in a busy offseason for general manager Rick Hahn and the Sox, which went 73-89 and finished fourth in the AL Central this year. The White Sox also signed reliever Zach Duke and first baseman Adam LaRoche, and then bolstered

“I love what Rick Hahn has been doing this offseason,” Robertson said on a confer-

ence call. “I like the moves he’s making with getting LaRoche and Zach Duke and the trade for Samardzija. I feel like he’s building a good squad that’s really going to be a competitor next year and I’m hoping that we end up back in the playoffs.”

Robertson said he found out about the Samardzija deal when reporters heard the news.

“When our deal went down, it was nice to hear that he was going to be there, too,” he said.

“He’s a strong competitor, he’s got a great arm, and I like the way he approaches the game when he takes the mound.”

Robertson gets $10 million next year, $11 million in 2016, $12 million in 2017 and $13 million in 2018 under the agreement announced Wednesday.

The right-hander was 4-5 with a

3.08 ERA and 39 saves this year.

“I’ve had a wonderful time playing with the New York Yankees,” Robertson said. “But now I’m looking forward to the next chapter.”

Robertson said he figured he probably would not be returning to New York after it reached a $36 million, four-year contract Friday with lefty reliever Andrew Miller.

“I wasn’t surprised. It is a business and the Yankees had to do what they had to do,” he said. “Obviously, when they signed Miller, I kind of had a feeling they might not approach us as well as we would have liked.”

As part of the contract with the Sox, Robertson cannot be traded without his consent to the New York Mets, Detroit,

the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland or Philadelphia.

“David fills an immediate need in the back end of our bullpen, and we feel he will be an important piece to our pitching staff for the next four seasons,” Hahn said.

Robertson would get a $25,000 bonus if he’s the starting pitcher in the All-Star game and $15,000 if he’s selected for the game. He also would get $100,000 for World Series, $75,000 for League Championship Series MVP, $25,000 for a Gold Glove and $50,000 for making The Sporting News all-star team. He also would get $100,000 each for winning MVP or Cy Young, $90,000 for second, $80,000 for third, $70,000 for fourth and $60,000 for fifth.

SAN DIEGO – Sought-after pitcher Jon Lester has agreed to a $155 million, six-year contract with the Cubs, the first big deal of the offseason involving a top-level starting pitcher and one Chicago hopes will help end more than a century of frustration at Wrigley Field’s Friendly Confines.

Lester’s contract, agreed to Tuesday night on the second day of baseball’s winter meetings, contains an option for 2021 that, if it becomes guaranteed, would make the deal worth $170 million over seven seasons. The average annual value of $25.8 million is the second-highest for a pitcher behind Clayton Kershaw’s $30.7 million as part of a $215 million, seven-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers that began this year.

“It’s not often you get to win the lottery, and we won the baseball lottery this year,” new Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “Now it’s up to us to put it into effect.”

A three-time All-Star who turns 31 next month, Lester won two World Series titles with Boston. The left-hander

joins a long-suffering team with a promising core of young players and a top-tier manager, Maddon, who left Tampa Bay and signed a $25 million, five-year contract with the Cubs.

Now, Chicago has an ace to lead the rotation as it tries to end a run of five straight losing seasons and a championship drought that dates to 1908.

Lester was dealt by the Red Sox to Oakland at the trade deadline in July and helped the A’s reach the playoffs for the third straight year before a 9-8, 12-inning loss to Kansas City in the AL wild-card game. He went 16-11 with a career-best 2.46 ERA and 220 strikeouts last season and is 116-67 with a 3.58 ERA in nine big league seasons.

He also had been sought by the Red Sox, World Series champion San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lester is headed to a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2008, but he knows Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer from their time together in Boston.

Maddon had been used to small payrolls in Tampa Bay.

Rivera: Anderson set to replace injured Newton at QB vs. Bucs

By STEVE REED The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Panthers coach Ron Rivera wants Cam Newton to get some rest and not worry about football.

Rivera said Wednesday that his fourth-year quarterback will not play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, allowing him a chance to begin recovering from an automobile crash that left him with two fractures in his lower back.

“I won’t expose him,” Rivera said. “I don’t want to put him in a bad position.”

Rivera confirmed Wednesday that Derek Anderson will start and Joe Webb will be his backup. He also joked Newton would be mad when he finds out he’s not playing.

Newton was discharged from the hospital earlier Wednesday, a day after he was injured when his truck

crashed and overturned in a two-vehicle crash. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police issued no citations for the crash.

Newton was not at the team’s facility, although Rivera said he is expected to be in on Thursday and his playing status will be re-evaluated next week.

The coach said he met with Newton on Tuesday at the hospital and “in true Cam fashion, he was disappointed for his teammates. He feels like he is letting us all down.”

Rivera said Newton flashed his smile and “when he did that you knew everything was going to be OK.” With Newton sidelined, Rivera will turn to Anderson, now in his 10th season.

Anderson started against Tampa Bay in the season opener and threw two touchdown passes, leading the Panthers to a 20-14 victory.

“He’s had some success in

this league,” Rivera said.

Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton said Wednesday that Newton is stiff and sore, but otherwise “his spirits were high” when he left the hospital.

Newton left the hospital with his family and will stay with them while recuperating.

A police report states that Newton was driving when a car driven by Nestor Pellot Jr., 46, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, pulled out in front of the fourth-year quarterback, causing his vehicle to flip. The report said Pellot didn’t see Newton’s truck at first and when he did, he tried to avoid a collision.

The report does not place blame on either driver. But the report lists two witnesses who said Pellot pulled out in front of Newton. Pellot also was taken to the hospital, but his injuries were unknown.

CHICAGO – Derrick Rose scored 23 points, Pau Gasol had 16 points and 16 rebounds, and the balanced Bulls beat the Brooklyn Nets, 105-80, on Wednesday night.

The Bulls had six players score in double figures, including all five starters. Jimmy Butler had 18 points, Mike Dunleavy scored 14, and Taj Gibson finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Deron Williams led Brooklyn with 17 points, but the Nets dropped their third straight.

Kevin Garnett scored 13 points; Alan Anderson had 12.

The Bulls grabbed control with a 17-3 run in the third quarter. Rose made a 3-pointer, and Gibson had a big dunk before Gasol capped the surge

with four straight points, including two foul shots that made it 70-58 with 3:32 to go.

Free-agent-to-be Paea having his best season BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Stephen Paea has been a bit of an oasis in this desert of a Bears season.

In his fourth year with the Bears after being drafted in the second round out of Oregon State, he easily has had his best season as a pro and arguably has been the Bears’ best defensive player.

And as the Bears’ luck would have it, he also is a free agent after this season. And whether it’s with the Bears or with another NFL club, Paea’s ship is about to come in.

We’re not talking silly money like what the Cubs’ Jon Lester or Paea’s teammate, Jay Cutler, recently received.

But Paea is going to sign a contract in March if not sooner that will allow him to set his family up for life, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer young man.

I had a chance to spend a little time with Paea on Tuesday evening as he came out to meet fans and sign autographs at the annual Northwest Herald and Chicago Football Toys for Tots drive in Vernon Hills.

Paea left no doubt about how he hopes his contract situation works out.

“I want to stay right here,” he told me. “Definitely, my family’s really comfortable here, I love my teammates, and I want to stay a Bear.”

They’d be foolish not to.

But after drafting defensive tackles Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton in the second and third rounds last year – having seen enough of Lamarr Houston before he tore up his knee to know his best position going forward has to be the three technique tackle spot, and with a salary cap that will be strained by the 2015 deals of Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, Jermon Bushrod, Jared Allen and Houston – can they be competitive for Paea, who will command at least $11 million

to $15 million on a three- or four-year deal?

One of the main reasons Paea has emerged this year is he’s finally healthy. After missing nine games over his first three seasons because of knee, ankle and toe injuries, Paea has played in all 13 games to date and has 26 tackles, six sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

In 2013, Paea played in 13 games for the season and had 23 tackles, 1½ sacks and three tackles for loss.

Not only has Paea significantly improved the Bears’

pass rush – which has gone from 26th in the league last year to 18th this year – he’s been a key run stuffer. That has helped the Bears, who were dead last at 32nd against the run last year, improve to 16th this year.

The Bears should make a priority of bringing back Paea, who’s still only 26.

But at our Toys for Tots drive, Paea was much more interested in talking about getting out and helping his local community, and thinking about Christmas with his own family, which is six strong

now after he and his wife, Susannah, welcomed triplets into their brood in July 2013.

“The triplets are just a year old right now, so they don’t really get what Christmas is yet, but our daughter does,” Paea said. “And I just really like being able to help out in the community and maybe make Christmas nicer for some kids who aren’t in as good a place as we are.”

He also indicated he wasn’t really thinking about his contract, with three more games to play and the holidays coming for his family.

“You know, it’s a little hard right now with me going to work every day and really wanting to finish strong,” he said. “But I hope to spend a lot of time with the kids right after the season.”

And then, of course, there will be that new contract from whichever team he ends up with. The Paea family should be celebrating again with a belated Christmas gift in March when free agency starts – and if he has his way, it will be right here in Chicago.

Holding hands with God Plainfield parents of girl with rare syndrome share their faith journey

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – When Brooklyn Melnick, 3, of Plainfield was 5 months old, she suddenly developed severe torticollis, an abnormal positioning of the head or neck.

The pediatrician suspected a spinal cord problem or possible cerebral palsy, but MRI results were confusing, said Susie Melnick, Brooklyn’s mother. Treatment for the torticollis was to include intense physical therapy and Botox injections.

In the meantime, Susie and her husband, Mike Melnick, youth pastor at First Assembly of God in Joliet, brought Brooklyn to church – in Texas, where the family lived at the time.

Members prayed over Brooklyn, Susie said, and within a week, the torticollis had disappeared, without treatment, she added.

Four months later, Brooke was diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome, a rare genetic syndrome, Susie said, affecting about 1 in 6 million children worldwide.

A deletion of part of chromosome 22q causes a lack of a protein found in the brain, heart and kidneys, she added.

But throughout this journey of delays in speech, cognitive skills, fine motor skills and feeding, along with 16 hours of physical therapy a week by therapists Susie calls “amazing,” Susie and Mike have not felt alone.

“God has just held our hands through the entire process,” Susie said.

This is why the results of Brooklyn’s MRI appeared confusing. It showed Brooklyn had either a thin or nonexistent corpus callosum, Susie said, the largest white matter in the brain, which connects the left and right cerebral hemisphere. When

STARTALK is a project of the National Security Initiative, a multi-agency effort to expand foreign language education in under-taught critical languages by

funding new and existing programs and to provide incentives and rewards for foreign language learning.

Dear Doctor K: I’m a woman in my late 40s, and I have mild but aggravating neck pain that flares up from time to time.

Can you suggest simple changes I can make at home and at work that might help?

Dear Reader: There are many things you can do to minimize your risk of recurring neck pain.

Start by keeping your neck in a neutral position whether you are sitting or standing.

That means your head should balance directly over your spine and not lean forward or be cocked to one side.

Here are some more tips: • At the computer or desk, keep your head balanced directly over your spine as much as possible.

Set your chair height so both your feet can rest on the ground, and sit with your buttocks far back in your chair, using a small pillow to support your lower back if needed.

That’s what I’m doing as I write this column at my desk at home. But it wasn’t always that way.

Until recently, when I worked at home, I used my lightweight computer with its small screen.

That small screen, plus my aging eyes, caused me to bend forward a lot to read what was on the screen.

When I told my wife that my neck was hurting, she said: “I think it’s because you don’t use a big flat screen at home like you do at work.

You’re hunched over a lot.”

Bingo! I got a goodsized home flat screen.

The screen sits directly in front of me so that I can see it without tilting my head down or back.

No more neck pain.

Also, when you’re working at your computer or doing any type of desk work, get up and

• When using a telephone, a headset, earbuds or speakerphone are good options to help keep your head in a neutral position for handsfree talking. Headsets are available for both your desk phone and cellphone.

• If you are sitting in a chair while reading, maintain an upright posture. Hold the book so you don’t have to lean down or forward to see it.

• Avoid wearing high heels, which change the alignment of your entire body and stress neck muscles.

• Choose a lightweight purse or backpack, and don’t overload it. Use a backpack designed to put weight on your hips instead of just your upper back, and don’t sling it over one shoulder.

With heavier loads, use a wheeled pack or briefcase. If you must use a shoulder purse, alternate which shoulder you use.

• If you drive long distances, periodic breaks can help to reduce or prevent neck strain.

• Sit far enough from a TV or movie screen that you can watch without tilting your head back.

Don’t sit off to the side, which forces you to turn your neck for long periods.

If you follow these simple suggestions, your neck pain should be considerably reduced, or even disappear.

Dear Desperate: If you love your wife and don’t want this marriage ruined, accept that you are going to have to accommodate to some degree her insufferable daughter and son-inlaw. This does not mean you must love them or even enjoy their company. It does mean working out a compromise that includes spending some time with them.

Every visit doesn’t have to include you. Take up some hobbies you can enjoy on your own. Develop a sense of humor where they are concerned. If you do, you won’t force your wife to choose between you and her child, because the chances are you would lose.

Dear Abby: You sometimes print letters from people who are looking to meet decent, honorable and interesting other people.

While you have recommended volunteering, joining health clubs, going to church -- and staying out of bars -- something I have yet to see mentioned is a community-based arts organization.

Someone who is musically inclined might look for a local band, orchestra or community chorus. But I’d like to put in a word for community theater. A person doesn’t have to be a performer; these groups need people to build sets, make costumes, locate props, run the backstage operations during a performance, etc. In the front of the house, they need people for promotion, selling tickets, ushering and soliciting donations from sponsors.

I met my husband of 30plus years through a community theater group, and know of several other longterm marriages that came about the same way. I’m a seamstress, so I have made my share of costumes. But I have also learned how to frame a wall and build a staircase while working on set construction.

Even if you don’t find that special someone, you will make dozens of new friends and have the satisfaction of accomplishing something at the same time. – Always Busy in Des
