Joliet’s D’Arcy Motors buys Talty

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com MORRIS – D’Arcy Motors has acquired the Talty Chevrolet-Buick-Cadillac dealership in Morris.

The Talty family will remain minority partners in the business, owner Terry D’Arcy said. But the dealership will become a D’Arcy operation.

“We’re going to manage it and staff it and run it,” D’Arcy said.

Signs went up Wednesday morning at the dealership giving notice of the change of ownership after the deal was closed the night before.

D’Arcy sold a Volkswagen dealership in Joliet to the Hawk Auto Group in December 2014.

The acquisition was Hawk’s first in Joliet. The company later bought most of Bill Jacobs’ Joliet dealerships.

D’Arcy said he plans over time to add a car wash to the Morris dealership and provide features he has at other dealerships.

“A lot of the same people are staying,” he said. “We’re just going to add some people and hopefully add more business.”

The Morris dealership has a new general manager – Randy Baudek.

Baudek said more inventory has been added to the dealership in both new and used vehicles.

“We’re going to serve the community, and we’re glad to be here,” Baudek said.

Medical marijuana clinic opens in Joliet Know more

by Robert Livas, a retired Will County judge; his daughter, Traci Fernandez; and her husband, Hugo Fernandez. They also have been licensed to operate a second facility in Naperville, which will open early next year. Livas and Traci Fernandez could not be reached Wednesday for comment.

The family began researching medical marijuana after a neurological disease left Traci Fernandez paralyzed and in chronic pain. 3C plans to donate 20 percent of its profits to the United Paralysis Foundation and another 5 percent to area community programs.

He said the deal was an opportunity created by the Talty family’s interest in becoming less involved in the dealership. The Talty family has had the dealership since 1974.

ceived a state-issued medical marijuana card can register 3C as their selected dispensary with the state Department of Public Health, which requires at least 24 hours.

Livas said customers who come in show the medical card to a guard and then to an employee, who checks their eligibility on a computer linked to the state’s network. Patients are allowed to buy 2.5 ounces

of medical marijuana every two weeks and all transactions must be in cash.

Customers will learn what strains of marijuana are available and talk with staff members about treatment and effects while making their purchase.

Products are delivered to the clinic at a fenced-in loading dock, weighed and scanned right away for inventory before being put in a vault. The Joliet location has bulletproof walls, motion detectors and live camera feeds going to the local state police headquarters.

“With the security they have in place, I don’t foresee any issues,” Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said Wednesday.

“Like any other business in the city, I wish them luck and hope they do well.”

City will find out Monday if agencies face cuts in 2016 If you go

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The stage is set for Joliet to approve a 2016 budget, but how it gets balanced still is a big question.

A public hearing on the budget is set for Dec. 21, making it possible for approval the next day. In the meantime, the City Council has scheduled a budget meeting Monday that likely is to include more proposed cuts.

The budget already proposes higher taxes, closing a fire station and spending $5.3 million in reserve funds to cover an annual deficit.

But a $1.6 million gap opened when the mayor and City Council this week rejected a proposed 5 percent increase in the city property tax.

Councilman Larry Hug is urging the city to stop making an annual $600,000 contribution to the Rialto Square Theatre and is rejecting suggestions that such action could shut down the theater.

“I just want to stop this alarm ringing that the Rialto will close down,” Hug said during the Monday budget meeting. “Management has to step up and work with an 80 percent budget.”

How serious is it?

Councilman Michael Turk said he has been told ending the city subsidy could shut down the theater.

“It’s that serious,” he told Hug at the meeting.

Rialto officials who were in the room said nothing.

Instead, two members of the Rialto volunteer organization urged the city keep up the $600,000 contribution.

“The allocation that you have made in your budget is welcomed and recognizes that you value the Rialto, as well,” Rialto volunteer Sue Bienias said.

“I’m going home,” Green said as he walked away. He did not return calls made Tuesday and Wednesday seeking comment about the potential impact on the Rialto.

The budget shows the city is willing to cut funding to key organizations.

Joliet’s annual contribution to the Will County Center for Economic Development would drop from $125,000 to $50,000 as the city wants to hire an economic development director of its own.

The cut in the CED contribution would make Joliet the second-largest government contributor to the organization at $50,000, said John Greuling, the center’s

The most obvious impact of the budget would be the closing of Fire Station No. 3, the newest fire station in Joliet.

The Joliet Public Library budget includes a 2 percent property tax increase, which likely is to stay intact.

Library Director Kevin Medows said the library needs more money to expand its digital operations and offer patrons modern library services.

He also said the library has reduced its staff in recent years and instituted salary caps.

While the library is included in the city budget, it is a separate budget. The City Council’s instructions to Hock to remove the city property tax increase did not include the library tax increase.

Fire agencies continue red wreaths campaign Cooking is the biggest culprit during the holidays

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Residents can check to see if there has been a holiday decorations-related fire in their area just by passing the local fire station.

If a wreath is lit up completely red, there have been no fires associated with decorations. But if there is a white light on the wreath, it means a fire has occurred during the current holiday season.

The red wreath is one of Illinois fire agencies’ longstanding holiday traditions.

It’s part of a campaign to spread safety awareness when putting up lights and other decorations around the home.

“It brings fire safety to the forefront of the holidays,” Joliet Fire Capt. Mark Vershay said.

The “Keep the Wreath Red” campaign was adopted 35 years ago by the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association. Now several area fire agencies are a part of the campaign.

Plainfield Fire Protection District Inspector Mary Kay Ludemann said the campaign has been working. The last time the district had to change a bulb in its wreath to white was five years ago, when a candle started a residential fire, Ludemann said.

Several other factors are leading to greater fire safety, Ludemann said, such as flameless candles that give off a traditional candle scent and more use of artificial Christmas trees.

Romeoville Assistant Fire Chief Jon Ibrahim said technology has played a large

part in reducing decoration-related fires.

“It’s a way during the time of the year to remind residents to be a little extra safe,” Ibrahim said. “Accidental fires are caused by Christmas decorations, but also by using candles and disposing of the Christmas tree.”

Will County candidates face objection hearings

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hearings are scheduled for Thursday on objections challenging the validity of nomination papers filed by two county candidates in the March primary election.

The candidates facing objections are Barbara Guerrero, a Democratic candidate for circuit clerk, and Sinatra Strong, a Democratic candidate for County Board District 3, which includes Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

The Will County Officers Electoral Board will conduct the hearings and decide whether the candidates should be on the ballot in the primary election.

The board includes the current circuit clerk, Pamela McGuire, who is not running for re-election. McGuire is a Democrat. The board also includes County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots and State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

Guerrero and Strong are the only county candidates facing objections, said Becky Leder, of the Will County Clerk’s Office. The deadline for filing objections was Monday.

Leder said it is possible neither case will be resolved Thursday.

“It’s an initial hearing.

They adopt the rules,” Leder said.

Often, she said, the board will reconvene at a second hearing to hear evidence and make a decision.

Both hearings are scheduled for 1 p.m. in Courtroom 402 at the Will County Courthouse, 14 W. Jefferson St., Joliet.

The objection against Guerrero’s candidacy was filed by Derrick E. Barry of Naperville.

Barry challenges the validity of Guerrero’s nomination papers and petitions that were circulated so she could appear on the ballot.

Guerrero is one of three candidates who filed petitions to be in the Democratic primary for circuit clerk. The others are Andrea Chasteen and Robert Enright.

The objection to Strong’s nomination papers was filed

by Richard L. Gougis III of Romeoville. His objection is being handled by Joliet attorney Joseph Cernugel.

Strong is one of three candidates who filed to be on the ballot for the County Board District 3 primary. The others are Elizabeth Rice of Bolingbrook and Donald Moran of Romeoville.

If Strong is removed from the ballot, there will be no contest in the election. Two candidates from each party can be picked in each County Board district in the primary to move on to the general election in November.

QUICK NEWS Water main breaks in Frankfort, boil order in effect

FRANKFORT – The village of Frankfort experienced a substantial water main break Wednesday at the intersection of Frankfort Square Road and Acorn Ridge Drive, according to a village news release.

A boil order has been issued and will most likely last until Thursday afternoon, the release stated.

The water was shut off from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in order for the necessary repairs to be made.

Officials at Indian Trail School have been advised of the work.

All neighbors directly affected were notified in person.

Notifications will be made when all repairs have been completed and the boil order is lifted.

135th Street Rail crossing construction delayed

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – One of the village of Plainfield’s most frustrating road projects has been delayed again by railroad owner Canadian National, village officials said.

Director of Public Works Allen Persons said the village has done all it can with the 135th Street railroad crossing pathway improvements, but CN told the village its portion of the work won’t happen until March or April.

The project has experienced lengthy delays since summer 2014. Persons said the village has been pushing CN to fasttrack the process.

The village was waiting for a permit from CN to start work on the pedestrian crossing improvements earlier this year.

The permit was approved several months ago and the village recently finished the work.

“We completed it with the understanding that Canadian National was ready,” Persons said. “If we get the permit to do work, the rest of the work would get done as well.”

The Village Board also passed an amendment last month that stipulated the village would reimburse half the cost for CN to install the crossing gates.

But in CN’s most recent response, engineering studies were anticipated to take two to three months before the rail company could start its end of the work.

Train blockages

Mayor Michael Collins suggested it wasn’t all bad news with CN, and recent discussions have indicated progress.

“We’ve had a series of discussions with them on the train blockages,” Collins said, noting the 17 rail grade crossings in the village. “They’re contemplating moving the hot box.”

Train stoppages ranging from 15 minutes to hours have been more common in Plainfield due to a control box near Renwick Road that detects when wheels get too hot. When it happens, traffic on Routes 126, 59 and 30 backs up and school buses and emergency vehicles have been delayed.

Collins said CN has agreed to move the hot box to Gaylord Road, which would cause trains to stop farther south.

“Renwick Road might suffer a bit,” Collins said, adding that it was important to keep the village’s state routes open.

PACE progress

Village Administrator Brian Murphy told residents Pace has some good news for commuters who use its Park-andRide location next to the Village Hall.

Pace is close to finding a better solution to the parking issues at the stop.

“This is the most hopeful I’ve heard them in a very long time,” Murphy said, noting he may have confirmation by the next Plainfield Coffee with the Mayor meeting. “They’re still working out the details, but they’re very optimistic in having a temporary solution in the area.”

That was a change in tune from a couple of weeks ago, when a Pace official told The Herald-News that plans were still in the “drawing board stage with the village.”

Batinick, Bertino-Tarrant see progress in Springfield

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – State Rep. Mark Batinick and state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant told residents and local officials at Wednesday’s Plainfield Coffee with the Mayor meeting that legislation has been progressing in the Illinois General Assembly.

Notably, the two referenced the Monday signing of a bill that releases money owed to municipalities, including motor fuel tax funds.

“If you win the lottery you get paid,” said Batinick,

R-Plainfield, referencing one of the most infamous examples of the Illinois government withholding money.

“It’s been a good week, which was probably a change in Springfield,” said Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood.

Batinick mentioned the unemployment insurance reform bill Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Friday as another example of work getting done in Springfield, noting, it brings down costs for businesses and the government.

“The MFT was obviously huge with the passage of funds,” Batinick said. “And the lottery

[funds being released] stops us from being a mockery.”

Bertino-Tarrant said she was looking toward next year’s agenda, and topics such as MAP grant funding and pension reform.

“Pension reform dropped off this whole year,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

But Bertino-Tarrant said the optimism doesn’t mean a budget solution is coming soon.

“People always ask me, ‘Well, what’s going to go on with this budget? Are we going to ever have a full budget?’ ” Bertino-Tarrant said.

“My guess is no.”

from the Three Rivers Association of Realtors, who called the tax a second property tax on homes at the time of sale and urged the city to find another source of revenue.

Meanwhile, if the city chooses to cut Rialto funding, an annual $275,000 contribution to the Joliet Area Histor-

ical Museum also could be in jeopardy.

Hug is the only council member to suggest funding be cut. But Hock said he would spend this week looking for ways to replace the $1.6 mil-

lion the city property tax would have generated.

Losing the city subsidies might have a deeper impact on the museum than it would on the Rialto. The city contribution is 55 percent of the mu-

seum’s budget.

“We do depend on the city for 55 percent, and we’re grateful for that,” Museum Director Greg Peerbolte said. “I have not heard whether we’ll be affected one way or the other.”

James A. Pacheco, 39, was convicted in September of aggravated assault, aggra- James vated fleeing Pacheco from police and driving under the influence of alcohol. Before trial, he also pleaded guilty to vandalism. “[Relatives testified to] times Mr. Pacheco does very well,” Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes said. “But in this situation he’s failed miserably because there was not one person who lived in Will County that he cared about that night.”

On July 30, 2012, Pacheco was spotted breaking the windows of his former landlord’s house in the 300 block of Union Street in Joliet and driving away. The homeowners called police, and officers Adam Stapleton and Eric Zettergren followed Pacheco’s car to the 900 block of Washington Street, where it was stopped by a crossing train.

According to previous court testimony, Pacheco made a U-turn and drove at the officers. Zettergren had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, while Stapleton fired multiple shots at the car, striking Pacheco.

“Officer Stapleton opened fire on that vehicle in an attempt to stop this drunk and wildly erratic driver from running him over and going on to possibly harm others,” State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a statement issued after the sentencing.

co drove away and led the police to the corner of State and Division streets in Lockport, where his vehicle crashed into a light pole.

Pacheco faced up to nine years in prison, but was eligible for probation.

“He didn’t care about the safety of those who lived on [the] streets he took to get to Lockport. He not only ignored, but escalated the circumstances to such that a sentence of probation would not reflect the seriousness of the charges,” Alessio Policandriotes said.

Stapleton and Zettergren attended Wednesday’s sentencing, along with several other Joliet police officers.

“We’re just here to support the officers involved in the case,” Chief Brian Benton said before the hearing.

Pacheco has filed a federal lawsuit contending that Joliet police used excessive force in his arrest.

JOLIET – A Crest Hill woman went shopping Tuesday with a stranger’s credit cards, police said.

About 10:30 a.m. a woman parked at Sunshine Food Mart, 806 Wilcox St. in Joliet, and left her purse in the front seat of her unlocked car, Joliet Police Lt. Kevin LaBolle said. The victim returned a few minutes later and found the purse was missing.

“She called her bank and the bank notified us when they saw the credit cards were being used at businesses throughout the city,” LaBolle said.

By tracking purchases and gaining a description of the suspect, officers intercepted Iantha Swingler, 48, as she was checking out at Burlington Coat Factory, 1300 N. Larkin Ave. LaBolle said Swingler had the stolen credit cards with her and was taken into custody.

Swingler, of the 1800 block of Marlboro Lane, was arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of burglary and three counts of identity theft.

The Joliet Police Department reminds residents to always lock their vehicles and make sure any valuables are stored out of sight.

Culbertson Elementary works to empower students

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 board inspectors held their last scheduled meeting at T.E. Culbertson Elementary School.

They learned how the school was working to integrate technology in its curriculum, develop literary skills and keep the schools a safe and welcoming environment.

All the staff were introduced by giving high-fives to a row of student cheerleaders.

“I can only say wow, what a welcome,” Board President Gwendolyn Ulmer said.

Other board inspectors praised the school, students and parents who packed the gym inside Culbertson Elementary. They encouraged them to keep up the good

work.

Principal Larry Tucker said the school staff work hard to make sure the students are using technology. He showed board inspectors random pictures of classrooms.

“What you’ll notice about these pictures is that none of these groups have a teacher involved. But what you’ll also notice about these students is that all the students are engaged in learning,” he said.

Under one school program, students use devices to access to thousands of books.

The school also aims to promote positive behavior in the schools through the CHAMPS model, he said. Other schools,

Administrative changes

E. Wesley Russell, assis-

tant superintendent for business and financial services, who will have changes in duties, was absent at Wednesday’s meeting.

Before the board convened into closed session, Superintendent Charles Coleman said Russell was sick.

On Tuesday, Coleman said Russell would have changes to some of his duties and responsibilities – based on overall needs – and some of them are being defined as district officials review them.

Russell is no longer listed as the assistant superintendent for business and financial services on the district information website.

LOCAL BRIEF HAJ scores ‘high performer’ rating

JOLIET – The Housing Authority of Joliet announced Wednesday that it has been designated a “high performer” housing agency.

The designation comes after the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development graded HAJ at 91 points in a Public Housing Assessment System score, according to a news release from HAJ. The release noted the assessment comes after HAJ was designated a troubled agency in 2011. The score was the first high performer designation for HAJ since new rules for the assessment system were implemented in 2008, the release stated.

“High scores are difficult to achieve, given the age of our developments and the declining financial resources,” Michael Simelton, CEO at HAJ, said in the release. “There is a lot of strategic thinking and planning that goes into running the HAJ and it is through our team that we can achieve this kind of success.”

The assessment grades housing authorities in four areas: physical state, financial health, management and capital funds, according to the release.

MAZON – For the first time a woman has been elected to the Illinois Farm Bureau Board of Directors.

Not just one woman, but two.

District 5 – which includes Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kendall and Will counties – will be represented by Tamara Halterman of rural Mazon.

“I think it’s important for a woman to be on the board because women are just as involved in farming operations as men are,” Halterman said.

“It’s time we have a woman on the board.”

Halterman comes from a family of farmers. She was raised on her parents’ farm just up the road from where she lives with her husband, Kevin, and sons, Sam and Luke.

She farms corn and soybeans and raises cattle.

Halterman has served as Grundy County Farm Bureau

secretary, as well as chairwoman of the Grundy County Farm Bureau Foundation and co-chairwoman of the Grundy County Farm Bureau Ladies Committee.

Tasha Bunting, Grundy County Farm Bureau manager, said the election is a historic event.

“We’re excited and honored that one of our members was elected,” Bunting said.

Halterman said she feels she can bring a different perspective to the board and that she will have an opportunity to reach consumers on a different level.

“A suburban mom is more apt to listen to me because I can speak to them as a woman and a mom,” Halterman said.

Halterman was elected during the Illinois Farm Bureau annual meeting last weekend in Chicago.

Also elected was Michele Aavang of McHenry County.

She spent time daily with her grandchildren and had a knack for cooking and loved trying new recipes. She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and singing. Lou found much pleasure in traveling the world; her Celtic soul often led her back to Ireland. She was generous of her time and resources and continuously helped those in need.

Lou held the position of Secretary of the VFW Post 367 Auxiliary and was a Coordinator of Continuing Education through the Professional Development Alliance (PDA). She volunteered for, and belonged to, many local organizations including: Illinois Computing Educators (ICE), Women of the Moose, Croation Club, and Joliet Area Teachers Association.

She was a tissue donor, still giving of herself to others even at the time of her death. Lou was and extraordinary woman who blessed every life she touched with love, happiness and comfort.

Born: April 9, 1929; in Joliet, IL Died: Dec. 6, 2015; in San Diego, CA Nancy Radakovich Hamilton, age 86, of San Diego, California, passed away peacefully December 6, 2015, in the comfort of her own home.

Nancy was born April 9, 1929 in Joliet, to Lawrence and Dorothy (Kruger) Peterson. She attended Farragut Grade School, Joliet Township High School, and Bowling Green State University.

On June 6, 1953, she married her high school sweetheart, Peter J. Radakovich. He preceded her in death on September 7, 1972. She later married longtime friend, John E Hamilton on April 16, 2007. He preceded her in death on October 5, 2015. Near the end of her life, Nancy reflected many times how fortunate she was to have been married to two such wonderful men.

She was known for her outstanding work ethic and was employed continuously for 45+ years for several physicians and optometrists in Joliet and San Diego.

Nancy was a longtime member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Joliet.

Upon moving to California in 1986, she joined the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed bible study groups and volunteering in the Women’s Thrift Shop.

She was an amazing mother raising and putting her son and daughter through college while a single mother, when that was far from common.

She loved to travel, entertain, and most of all be with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Her energetic sense of humor, “passion” for shopping, and attitude toward life will be greatly missed.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; and beloved sister, Patricia Peterson McElhinney.

Surviving are daughter, Susan (John) Osborne of San Diego, CA; and son, Pete (Kathy) Radakovich of Traverse City, MI; grandchildren, Matthew Osborne, Zachary Osborne, Rachel Radakovich and Nina Radakovich; step-children, Janice Sota-Hamilton of Pittsburgh, PA and Jaclyn Hamilton (Jon) Brinlee of Tulsa, OK; step-grandchildren, Ben Sota, Julianne Sota, Evan Brinlee, and Julie Brinlee; and two step-great grandchildren.

During the Korean War served aboard the destroyer tender, Bryce Canyon and then Corry Field, NAS, Pensacola, before serving in the Naval Shipyard, Charleston, S.C. as a ship superintendent. Remained active in the Naval Reserve with the Seabees and various air squadrons at the Glenview Naval Air Station. Retired from the Naval Reserve as LCDR in 1983.

Employed first at the Whiting refinery of Standard Oil as a mechanical engineer in inspection and design and later at Amoco Chemical’s Joliet plant to retirement in 1994 as a principal staff engineer after 48 years of corporate service.

JOHN R. THOMAS John R. Thomas, age 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 7, 2015.

John is survived by his loving children, Rich (Susan) Thomas and Jeanette (Robert) Sheffield; cherished grandchildren, Rick Thomas, John (Corli) Thomas, and Sandi (Tony) Corniel, Eric Sheffield, Andrea (Zach) Sounhein, and Michael Sheffield; cherished great-grandson, Jackson Thomas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary (nee Faynik) (2001); seven dear sisters; and six dear brothers.

John served proudly in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Parker with his twin brother, Ed. He was a lifelong resident of Crest Hill and longtime parishioner of St. Anne Catholic Church.

John retired from Olin Chemical after over 35 years of employment. He was a lifelong Cubs fan. John was a handy man and could fix just about anything. He will be forever missed by his family and friends.

Eugene grew up in Urbana and graduated from Urbana High School.

Veteran of the US Navy from 19591962, it was then while stationed in California that Eugene trusted the Lord Jesus as his personal savior.

After his discharge he returned to Urbana before moving to Joliet in the early 1970?s to be near like minded Christians that gather to the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, first in Joliet and then New Lenox.

Formerly employed with Ball Glass in Plainfield, where he met many wonderful people. Eugene loved the Lord Jesus Christ and sought to tell all that would listen of their need to know the Lord Jesus is their savior.

He will be remembered by those that knew him as a faithful testimony.

Madigan: Ill. income tax should be restored to 5%

By JOHN O’CONNOR and IVAN MORENO The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – House Speaker Michael Madigan said Wednesday that “a good place to begin” in mending a multibillion-dollar spending hole would be to return the state income tax to 5 percent, its level during a temporary hike that expired in January with then-Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner’s blessing.

Madigan has made no secret of his support for higher taxes during the months-long fiscal standoff. But his response to an audience question after a speech to a packed City Club of Chicago luncheon represented his first mention of a specific number.

“Let me avoid creating a headline for tomorrow’s newspaper and say that a good place to begin ... would be the level we were at before the income tax expired,” the speaker said. “Starting there,

you can go in whatever direction you want to go.”

He did not elaborate.

Madigan and the Democrats who hold supermajorities in both the House and Senate have been in a standoff with the conservative businessman governor over the state budget, which should have taken effect July 1.

Democrats want to catch up to the deficit with a tax increase and spending cuts.

Rauner contends the problems are deeper and is demanding far-reaching changes to make operating business cheaper. His plan would curb union power by crimping prevailing wage rages and collective bargaining and limit payouts in workers’ compensation and liability lawsuits.

A Rauner spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment. But the GOP leader of the Senate, Christine Radogno of Lemont, called it “outrageous” to suggest higher taxes with “no re-

forms to change the way we do business.”

Rauner’s victory over Gov. Pat Quinn last year dashed Democrats’ hopes to extend the four-year, 67 percent temporary increase imposed under Quinn. The rate went from 3 percent to 5 percent – producing $7 billion a year – but the 2011 law required it to roll back to 3.75 percent without action to extend it.

Madigan continues to label Rauner’s proposed changes as “extreme” and has repeatedly called for the governor to operate “in moderation.”

Three stopgap budget plans lawmakers have been able to put together with Rauner – including one Monday that released $3 billion, mostly in already-collected tax revenue – were possible, Madigan said, because of “one little difference: The governor was not demanding changes in workers’ compensation, collective bargaining, (or the) prevailing wage.”

Chicago mayor apologizes for teenager’s death, vows reforms

By SARA BURNETT The Associated Press CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel, known for keeping vise-like control over Chicago and his own political image, finds himself in the weakest position of his public career as he struggles to respond to a police scandal, claims of cover-ups at City Hall and calls for his resignation.

But the former White House chief of staff has said repeatedly that he will not step down. The nation’s third-largest city has no process for a mayor to be recalled. And most of the cries for Emanuel to resign have come from grass-roots activists and residents, not from the city’s political powerbrokers. The next election isn’t until 2019.

The mayor used a special

meeting Wednesday of the Chicago City Council to try to calm the firestorm, apologizing for the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white officer and promising “complete and total” reform.

“I take responsibility for what happened because it happened on my watch.

And if we’re going to fix it, I want you to understand it’s my responsibility with you,” Emanuel said during a sometimes-emotional speech that lasted nearly 45 minutes.

“But if we’re also going to begin the healing process, the first step in that journey is my step. And I’m sorry.”

The remarks were Emanuel’s lengthiest and seemingly most heartfelt since the public got its first look last month at the squad car video that showed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald veering away from

officer Jason Van Dyke before he began shooting, hitting McDonald 16 times. Van Dyke is charged with first-degree murder.

Critics have repeatedly accused him of keeping the footage under wraps until after he won a tougher-than-expected spring election for a second term. He has denied the claim and acknowledged Wednesday that he should have pressed for prosecutors to wrap up their investigation sooner so the video could be made public.

But his contrition did little to ease the anger in the streets. Hours after the speech, protesters overflowed an intersection in front of City Hall, then marched through the financial district and blocked a major intersection for a short time as police directed traffic around them.

To the Editor: It sounds like a John Grisham novel.

Life insurance companies withholding death benefits for 30, 40, even 50 years after a loved one has passed away.

Why? It is part of the business model. The unpaid life insurance is baked into the bottom line.

This must end.

As Illinois state treasurer, I reunite individuals with unclaimed property, including unpaid life insurance. We audit life insurance companies, and in the past two years we found $195 million that should have been paid to grieving families.

Today, we have an opportunity to force these bad actors to do the right thing.

The Uniform Law Commission is updating the 1995 Uniform Unclaimed Property Act. This model legislation would encourage consistency in unclaimed-property laws across our country.

Some interests want to step backward. For example, three insurance companies that are part of Kemper Corp. are suing my office to prevent a review of their life insurance payment records.

This is outrageous and hurts families when they most need help.

Insurance companies must open their books.

Compare the names of the insured against data on the recently deceased. With inactive accounts, insurance companies shouldn’t wait until a person’s 99th birthday to make sure everyone is alive and well.

As Illinois treasurer, I’m the state’s chief investment officer. I also protect consumers, including families who have lost a loved one.

Please join me in telling your elected officials that it’s long past time to require life insurance companies to do the right thing.

These are times that call for virtuous leaders Did you know that you are created for greatness?

My friends at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota, want to make sure you do. They’ve established an MBA program in “virtuous leadership” to help remind people who they were created to be – and that their habits could transform a humanity seemingly drowning in loneliness, despair and fear.

The university is teaming up with author and lawyer Alexandre Havard, who founded an institute on virtuous leadership after writing a book of the same name. Based in Moscow, he shares his message with business executives and university students.

Havard’s book, subtitled “An Agenda for Personal Excellence,” begins with the principle that leadership needs to be rooted in the classic virtues.

“Virtue is a habit of the mind, the will and the heart, which allows us to achieve personal excellence and ef-

fectiveness,” he said. Leadership is intrinsically linked to virtue. Why? Because “virtue creates trust,” and “because virtue ... is a dynamic force that enhances the leader’s capacity to act. Virtue allows the leader to do what people expect of him.”

Havard explains in his book: “It was my happy lot to be born to and raised by people of exceptional virtue.

That may sound corny to people of modern sensibility, but it’s true. I refer to family members, beginning with my excellent parents and their parents – immigrants to France from the Soviet Union.

They were people of heart who lived magnanimity, humility, prudence, courage, self-control and justice as naturally as they breathed.”

He points to Joan of Arc, whose own martyrdom came because of people who had lost focus, who couldn’t see light when it was right in front of them. Havard quotes poet and singer Leonard Cohen,

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez who wrote of Joan at the stake: “I saw the glory in her eye.” He quotes Joan herself: “Help yourself, and God will help you.” Both parts count there. As Havard puts it: “She trusted fully in God, and fully in herself.”

I think that reflects some of the frustration you see on the cover of the New York Daily News, that declares that “God isn’t fixing” things. When blood is shed, prayer is important – but so are our efforts.

And our efforts can’t be confined to policy. We have to give our lives to the work of reformation, restoration, reparation, renewal. We need to see human life as the tremendous, incomparable gift that it is, and help people see it and believe it.

This is not empty self-esteem. This is being aware

of your own shortcomings, weaknesses and mistakes, and having the humility to seek that which is above, to see man as more than of this world. If a person sees life as a gift, he will start seeing his life-giving potential. He will want to create, not destroy.

“He must also be aware of his own talents,” Havard writes, “and learn to rely on them.”

Beware, of course, of vanity. “Man in himself is pure nothingness,” Havard writes, whereas a man who sees himself as made in the image of God “understands that he is not just a material being but also a spiritual one. He can understand this through reason – through his rational intelligence and free will.”

But in a world that has stopped making sense to a lot of people, our lack of faith is exposed. Man, as Havard puts it, “is incapable of understanding himself by reason alone. He does not know who he is. Faith is essential.”

In recent days, there has

been talk about rhetoric needing to be toned down, along with a simultaneous doubling-down on hardened ideology.

Daily News – and any prayer shamers – be cautioned. And believers, believe!

Let it be seen.

Rhetoric matters. So does the way we live our lives. The best practices in the world won’t truly matter if they are not authentic.

“Magnanimity is the thirst to lead a full and intense life; humility is the thirst to love and sacrifice for others,” Havard writes. These things together give life. This combination is light. See how we need it?

Take the courses, get the immersion, read the books.

Lead, already. Times such as these need it.

That’s why University of St. Francis women’s basketball coach Samantha Quigley described Wednesday night’s nonconference game against Lewis at Neil Carey Arena as one where you wish both

teams could win.

Then Quigley smiled and whispered, “but if somebody had to lose, I would want it to be Lewis.”

Didn’t happen, however.

The Flyers, coached by Kristen Gillespie, finished the first half on a 16-3 run to lead 40-27 at halftime en route to a 73-61 victory that leaves both nationally ranked teams with 9-1 records.

The Lewis strategy was simple. Get the ball to 6-foot freshman Jessica Kelliher and 6-0 senior Mariyah Brawner-Henley on the blocks and let them operate.

“That was the No. 1 key,” Gillespie said. “Pound the ball inside. We’re lucky to have Mariyah and Jessica. They are two very unselfish kids.”

Kelliher finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds,

Brawner-Henley with 18 points and 15 rebounds, as the only real size USF had to contend with the dynamic duo got into foul trouble.

So perhaps it was appropriate that the Flyers were tested

guard Capel Henshaw as the Flyers scored an 83-67 nonconference victory.

Olivet (7-2) was within 5347 at the 13:30 mark of the second half. But Miles Simelton’s driving layup, two Henshaw free throws and a David Heckman rebound basket opened a 12-point lead for Lewis (7-2).

Olivet refused to fold, getting back within seven points three times and within six once before Strus and the Flyers put it away for good

Strus, who came in averaging 24.9 points and has the infamous 52-point explosion on his résumé, finished with 33 points on 13-of-23 shooting. That included 3 of 8 from 3-point range, all in the second half, and 4 of 6 free throws.

He also had 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots.

Henshaw, meanwhile, was on fire in the first half to help Lewis to a 40-34 lead at the break. The left-hander tied his

career high with 17 points, including 5 of 9 from beyond the arc.

The Flyers’ big men also contributed, as Lincoln-Way Central graduate Brad Foster finished with nine points and five rebounds, and Kyle Nelson chipped in eight points and seven boards. Both blocked two shots. In addition, Frank Vukaj provided some quality backup minutes as he chipped in six points and three rebounds.

Lead guard Simelton hit only two of 13 shots and scored five points, but he dished out a team-high seven assists.

Aaron Larson led Olivet with 27 points and eight rebounds.

The victory was Lewis’ 11th straight over Olivet. The Flyers lead the all-time series, 14-3.

Lewis, which lost last Saturday at Indianapolis, 84-70, to end a four-game winning streak, will not play again until visiting Malone on Dec. 19.

“Alyssa is one of the players who has embraced the need to step up,” Gillespie said of Dengler. “She can shoot it, and she’s our best perimeter defender.”

“It’s definitely a huge adjustment not having Jamie [Johnson],” said Dengler, who finished with 12 points. “I have loved shooting the ball since I was a little kid. Now, without

Jamie to do our outside shooting, I have to work on my shot all the more. I have to make sure it’s consistent.”

As for her teammates, Dengler said, “Jessica and Mariyah have done a great job stepping up. Mariyah is one of a kind.”

No argument was forthcoming from St. Francis guard Christina Ekhomu, who led the Saints with 16 points. She hit 5 of 8 shots, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, and all four free throws.

“Mariyah is a great player,” Ekhomu said. “We worked the

Doug Bruno camp together. and now we’re friends. She is one of the best post players I have ever seen.”

Ekhomu, a point guard by trade, said she is looking to score a little more.

“I feel like I can put more pressure on the defense if I am in a constant attack mode,” Ekhomu said. “Then I can open things up for a lot of my teammates.”

“When Christina sees we need someone else to step and score some points, she does it,” Quigley said. “But it’s tough

when you’re going against their size and length to be as aggressive as we tried to be on the offensive end and then the same thing on the defensive end.”

Quigley said she was happy with the Saints’ effort.

“They have two great players, an All-American [Brawner-Henley], and Jessica [Kelliher] may be the freshman of the year, but for the most part, we made them earn their baskets,” she said.

“We played hard. You can only control your effort, how

hard you play, how hard you rebound and play defense. You can’t control if the ball goes in the basket. I hope we never shoot 6-of-25 from three again.”

The subpar showing from outside the arc contributed to the Saints shooting only 37.5 percent overall to Lewis’ .481.

Charnelle Reed followed Ekhomu with 15 points, and Kamari Jordan added 13.

Reed had eight rebounds and Angelica Osusky seven as USF managed to stay within 37-31 on the boards. Both teams committed 17 turnovers.

Things were looking good for Central after Gmazel hit a layup early in the final quarter to give the hosts a 60-51 lead. but Illiana went on a 15-5 run to grab a 66-65 lead with 3:10 left. Kwasigroch (seven rebounds) got a rebound basket 20 seconds later to put his team back in front for good before Michalak (seven rebounds) hit a layup and Malone (seven rebounds) made four straight free throws to make it a 73-66 game with 41 seconds remaining.

“They had some weapons on their team, and we didn’t play great defensively, but our offense helped us win the game,” Kwasigroch said. “We

had some turnovers, which led to them taking the lead late, but our team is tough and we fought through that and won the game.

“It’s just a lot of fun coming to practice every day with these guys. It’s a whole new team from last year, and we really move the ball well and have great team chemistry. We all have one goal, and that’s to win a regional. But right now, it’s just one game at a time.”

Central jumped out to a 1511 lead after one quarter after Michalak closed that period with an old-fashioned threepoint play. He closed out the opening half by hitting two 3-pointers, a layup and jumper and two free throws to give his team a 31-29 halftime lead.

“I thought we played well, especially on offense,” Michalak said. “We have to clean things up on defense, and we

made a few too many turnovers in the second half. In the second quarter, they were focusing on Isaiah and Jarret, and they were doing a great job kicking it out, so they were really just wide-open shots for me and pretty easy to knock down.

“Last year, we were pretty young, so we’re a lot more experienced this year. We weren’t experienced enough in certain situations, but this year I think we have it down pretty good. We really practice hard and get at it, and I think we’ve really gotten better in practice.”

The Knights used an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter to go up, 48-40, and were still up, 58-49, before Illiana rallied behind Matthew Zandstra (16 points), Bo Hofstra (16 points) and Chandler Kimmel (14 points).

Coal City’s Littleton, Skubic sign for colleges

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent COAL CITY – Two Coal City senior baseball players will be changing team nicknames and colors next year.

Brad Littleton and Jared Skubic signed national letters of intent Wednesday evening in a ceremony at the Coal City library.

In the spirit of the holiday season, both players will trade the color green of the Coalers for the color red of their new respective schools. Littleton will play for the Hoosiers of Indiana University, while Skubic will be playing for the Southeastern Iowa Community College Wildcats.

Littleton was 9-0 with a 1.07 ERA and had 108 strikeouts to go with 13 walks during his junior season. He is also one shutout away from tying the state record for consecutive shutouts. He ended last season with 40 consecutive innings over seven games, giving up no earned runs.

He also plays the outfield

and hit .340 for the Coalers last season. He earned all-state honors as a junior along with all-conference, all-area and all-region laurels.

Littleton was also a key member of the Coalers’ football program, starting as a wide receiver, safety on defense and handling the punting duties.

“I chose Indiana because it’s close, they have a great program and a great environment with the coaching staff,” he said. “I will miss the hitting part of the game just being a pitcher. It will also be a little different living away from home, but I already know some of the players, and that should make it a little easier transition.

“I visited Cincinnati and Michigan, but I really liked everything at Indiana. I enjoyed the recruiting process. Visiting the different schools gave me options, and I liked the process of talking with all the different coaches.”

Skubic was 8-2 with 3.00 ERA and had 48 strikeouts

“When I visited Southeastern, everything really looked

good,” Skubic said. “Their program is very solid, it’s a Division I junior college, so the competition is also very good.

I will just be a pitcher, and that is fine with me. I’m not really that good of a hitter. I don’t

even know if I’ll miss that part of the game.

“It’s good to get the recruiting process out of the way. I looked at a few schools, but the whole process of trying to figure out where to play next year was nerve-racking. Now I can just enjoy my senior season.”

Coal City was 29-6 last season and has seven starters back for 2016. The Coalers, however, will be moving up a class to 3A. “This is great for these two young men,” veteran coach Jerry McDowell said. “I have been coaching 30 years, and you see the kids grow up from grade school to junior high and high school, and it’s very nice to see your players move on to the next level. Both have worked hard to get where they are, they are both going to good programs, and hopefully the success follows.

“With our pitching staff led

by Brad and Jared, along with most of our starters back, we are looking forward to the season. Moving up to 3A will be different, though.”

NEW LENOX – A year ago, Lincoln-Way Central’s boys basketball team only won four times in 26 games.

On Wednesday, the Knights already reached that win total in just their fifth contest.

Central saw a nine-point fourth-quarter lead disappear against Illiana Christian but then used an 8-0 run to help it capture a 75-68 nonconference win.

The Knights (4-1), whose only loss came in overtime Friday at Thornwood, not only had four players reach double figures, but all of them did so in one half.

Aaron Michalak collected 16 of his 19 points in the first half while Mitch Kwasigroch got 17 of his game-high 20 points after the break. Jar-

ret Gmazel scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half, and Isaiah Malone picked up 10 of his 12 points in the final two quarters.

“Give them credit, since they were a hard team to guard,” Knights coach Bob Curran said of Illiana (6-2), which suffered its second loss in two days. “They’ve got some guys who can shoot it, and they hit the offensive glass pretty well. I’m not used to shootouts, but we got a few stops when we needed them, and our offense pulled us through.

“In the first half, they played a triangle and two on Isaiah and Jarret to take them away, and Aaron had a great first half, and we didn’t see that defense after that. The nice thing about this team is that we’ve had numerous guys in double figures, and that helps. The kids have set a

Minooka, Lockport among favorites in 23rd Strikefest girls bowling tourney SUBMITTED REPORTS JOLIET – Minooka and Lockport will be among the favorites in the 23rd annual Strikefest Girls Bowling Tournament on Saturday at Town & Country Lanes on West Jefferson Street in Joliet.

The 44 teams that are entered include 16 that qualified for state last year, including state champion Lockport.

Other Joliet-area entries are Joliet Central, Joliet West, Lemont, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way West, Morris, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North and Plainfield South.

The defending state champion the previous seven years has competed in the tournament. In addition to Minooka and Lockport, Waubonsie Valley, Collinsville and Harlem are among the favorites.

“This is the top tournament in Illinois every year,” North athletic director Ron Lear said. “The field is stacked every year with talent from every part of Illinois. This year is no exception. The tournament has become known around the college ranks as the place to recruit talent in Illinois.”

Barnes and Jean-Paul accounted for three NCAA provisional marks at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open, as the No. 15 Flyers took third place overall at the event. This is the second straight year that Barnes and Jean-Paul have won the first GLVC Indoor Athletes of the Week, as they each took home the honor in 2014.

Barnes won two events at GVSU, winning both the 400-meter dash (47.72 seconds) and as a member of the 4x400 relay (3:16.79) to win GLVC Track Athlete of the Week honors. His 400-meter time is No. 1 in the country.

Jean-Paul, the 2015 NCAA Division II indoor high jump champion, picked up where he left off. He won the high jump at the GVSU Holiday Open with a mark of 7 feet 1/4 inches (2.14m), and has been rewarded with GLVC Field Athlete of the Week accolades. Kicker Gould’s confidence remains high after second multi-miss game

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Robbie Gould hasn’t been in this situation often.

Only twice in the first 10 years of Gould’s career had he missed multiple field goals in the same game.

But after Gould’s second such game of 2015 on Sunday, when he pulled a 36-yarder wide left that would’ve given Chicago a 23-20 win, he said it’s not time to panic – just practice more.

“Sometimes, you just got to go out and do some things on your own to start fixing some things,” said Gould, who for the first time in his career said he kicked “30 balls” on his own the day after the game.

Paired with extra film study, it has helped Gould identify some technical issues with his approach that he has adjusted.

“There’s just some things that, swing-wise, I’m wrapping around the ball a little bit. I got to get down through the line a little bit more, technical things that I need to get fixed, and I’ve worked really

hard at it this week.”

Unlike in Week 9 in San Diego, the first two-miss outing by Gould this season, the Bears weren’t able to overcome the kicker’s mistakes against the 49ers. He said feeling as if he let his teammates down has been the hardest part this week, but the outpouring of support from teammates and coaches, old and new, has been comforting.

“I think the most disappointing thing is letting down my teammates when they needed me the most,” Gould said Wednesday. “ … It’s just something I know how to rebound and glad I have great teammates, great coaches, great owners and organization that have been very supportive since Sunday.”

Gould understands fans and media might wonder whether the 34-year-old and franchise scoring leader’s struggles might be the beginning of his demise. He just feels there’s plenty of evidence that says otherwise.

“Look at my track record.

I started out the season on a pretty good streak, got to the bye week and probably haven’t been as strong as I had

been in the beginning of the season,” he said.

After his least-productive year as a pro in 2014, Gould was perhaps the Bears’ most consistent player in the first half of the season while converting his first 17 tries. However, his first miss – a 51-yarder late in the third quarter of Week 8 – proved costly in a game the Vikings would win by a field goal.

“I wouldn’t say his skill has trended downward,” special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers said. “Time will tell on everything as it relates to the entire season. He’s had a lot of good games, and he’s hit a lot of good kicks. Hopefully, it was a bad day and we’ll see [him] moving forward.”

Gould’s confidence, he said, remains high as he enters the final four games of an unusually turbulent year.

“I’m looking forward to starting a new streak. That’s usually what I do in these situations,” he said. “And the guys – whether it’s blocking, holding or snapping – have been doing a great job all year.

It’s really just me stepping up to the plate and getting it done.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The National League champion New York Mets filled a key spot by obtaining second baseman Neil Walker from Pittsburgh for pitcher Jon Niese, and the Detroit Tigers bolstered their bullpen by acquiring reliever Justin Wilson from the New York Yankees in Wednesday trades at the winter meetings.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, meanwhile, kept upgrading their rotation. A day after finalizing a $206.5 million deal for major league ERA leader Zack Greinke, they announced their five-player swap with Atlanta that brought All-Star righty Shelby Miller and sent No. 1 draft pick Dansby Swanson to the Braves.

“Our ownership stepped up in allowing us to get Zack Greinke. It puts us in a position to get better as a team, but we weren’t complete. We needed an additional piece to our rotation,” Arizona general manager Dave Stewart said.

Miller should slot into the No. 2 spot in the rotation ahead of Patrick Corbin, Rubby De La Rosa and Robbie Ray. Meanwhile, the Athletics announced Wednesday they have traded third baseman Brett Lawrie to the White Sox for right-hander J.B. Wendelken and minor league left-hander Zack Erwin.

Lawrie hit .260 with career highs of 16 homers and 60 RBIs in his lone season for the A’s, also staying off the disabled list for the first time in five major league seasons.

Manhattan church re-creates Bethlehem marketplace, invites all to see it By the numbers

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – The Rev. Keith D. Leininger, senior pastor at Christ’s Mission Church in Manhattan, summed up the church’s “Travel to Bethlehem” event with this Bible verse.

“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark.” Luke 17: 26-27.

Every two to three years, Christ’s Mission Church re-creates the marketplace environment surrounding Jesus’ birth and invites the community to participate. The event began last weekend and will continue Saturday and Sunday.

Because it’s the church’s Christmas gift to the community, the entire interactive pageant is free.

In fact, no free-will offering will be taken, Leininger said.

“We’re just praying everybody experiences fully what Christmas is all about, and it is all about God’s love for us in Jesus,” Leininger said in a voice low with emotion. “That special gift, the main gift, is the first gift, which is Jesus himself.”

But first comes the aforementioned activity.

While waiting outside to enter “Bethlehem’s marketplace,” the crowds can view the livestock, Leininger said.

Once inside, they will receive “Bethlehem denarii” to pay taxes, sample native food and barter with shopkeepers.

“Although nothing really is for sale, except for the food, and you can’t pay for that with your own money,” Leininger said. “They have to use the Bethlehem denarii, which we give them. It really is all free.”

The entire church – 125 people – is involved.

More than 80 people participate in costume, with at least 70 at any given time.

About 35 to 40 donkeys, ponies, sheep and goats are brought in to the event.

Three babies will portray Jesus.

Two have similar names and resemble twins – although they are not related. One baby Jesus is Leininger’s granddaughter.

“Travel to Bethlehem” is held every two to three years.

One church member implored Leininger to make it a church event, and he agreed.

The church hosted the first “Travel to Bethlehem” in 1987.

An estimated 200 to 300 people attended.

Crest Hill church planning Lucia Fest The HERALD–NEWS CREST HILL – The Swedish tradition of Santa Lucia will be observed at Church of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant, 2437 Plainfield Road in Crest Hill.

Katelyn Burzawa, 16, a junior and honor student at Joliet West High School, will portray Lucia, known as the Queen of Light.

She is the daughter of Jim Burzawa and Melissa Felty.

As part of the traditional Lucia Fest, Lucia will invite the congregation to a Swedish smorgasbord, sponsored by Women Ministries. Burzawa will be accompanied by attendants portrayed by girls and boys from Church of the Good Shepherd Sunday School.

Martha Skoien will sing “Sankta Maria,” the traditional Lucia song; and Danielle Bielema, the 2002 Queen of Light, will read the legend of Lucia, a godly girl who became engaged to a nobleman at the age of 17.

NEW LENOX – The United Methodist Church of New Lenox will present the American classic comedy, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”

Be aggressive against small slams, cautious against grand slams.

The most reliable way to prevent recurrences is to take a low dose of an antibiotic used to treat UTIs. There’s some room to experiment here. If you have frequent UTIs, ask your doctor about the following strategies and which one might work best for you: • take a low dose daily for six months or longer; • take a dose only after you have sex, particularly if the recurrent UTIs tend to follow having sex; • keep a supply of antibiotics in the medicine cabinet, and take them at the very first symptoms of a UTI to shorten the duration of symptoms.

If you would like to avoid taking antibiotics, there are two “natural” alternatives. Probiotic vaginal suppositories containing Lactobacilli have had promising results in premenopausal women like you. What about cranberry juice?

The evidence it can reduce the number of recurrent UTIs is weak.

Furthermore, you have to drink 8 ounces of it a day for six months to a year. There is a lot of sugar (and calories) in that much cranberry juice.

It might require some experimentation with different alternatives, but you should be able to find a treatment that reduces the frequency and severity of your recurrent UTIs.

However, I keep getting urinary tract infections.

My husband and I want to know what I can do to prevent them.

Dear Reader: Many women know well the symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI).

You might feel a frequent urge to urinate, yet pass little urine when you go. It might hurt when you urinate.

Your urine might be cloudy, blood-tinged and strong-smelling. Furthermore, many women have a tendency to get repeated UTIs. UTIs usually are caused by bacteria that live in the gut and are present on the skin around the rectum.

There, these “bad” bacteria compete for food with “good” bacteria called Lactobacilli. If the bacteria are carried from the rectum to the vagina, they can enter the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder) and infect the bladder.

Some women inherit a condition that makes it easier for the bad bacteria to stick to the lining of the urethra. That, in turn, makes it easier for the bacteria to cause an infection of the urethra and bladder. That’s why a tendency to have recurrent UTIs tends to run in the family.

Risk factors for UTI vary with age. Before menopause, the most common risk factors are sexual intercourse and use of spermicides.

Sex can push bacteria up the urethra and into the bladder. And spermicides may kill off beneficial good bacteria in the vagina, making it easier for the bad bacteria to multiply.

After menopause, the numbers of protective Lactobacilli in the vagina naturally decline.

The first is to slow down. Take a step back so Josh can have some breathing room. The second is to try to make a friend rather than an enemy of Josh’s mother, who might be worried about a 13-year-old girl who seems fixated on her son.

Dear Abby: I remarried when my son, “Kevin,” was 5.

He’s now 20. My husband has always tried to be a good dad to him even though Kevin was challenging at times.

Kevin is now in the military. Before he left, he adopted a dog, “Leisel,” that’s a year old. Kevin will be deployed overseas for three years and wants us to take her. We have a dog and cat, a big yard and three teenage daughters who want Leisel, but my husband says no. He says it was a mistake to get the dog in the first place, and Kevin needs to learn a lesson and do the hard thing and give her up.

I agree it was a mistake, and I really don’t want another dog, but I’m willing to do it for my son. Lots of parents get “stuck” with their kids’ pets. They roll their eyes and just do it. Who is right?
