lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet City Council members Monday took a closer look at City Manager Jim Hock’s recently proposed spending plan for 2015, criticizing some aspects while suggesting a few tweaks to provide more police officers.

The overall budget runs a deficit while covering higher payments into the police and fire pensions, a return of the city’s tree trimming program, and hiring more police and public works employees.

To get there, the city will have to dip nearly $9 million deep into its reserve fund to balance next year’s operating budget, Hock said.

The $279 million spending plan – which calls for no tax or fee increases – anticipates $163 million in revenue and $172.3 million in operating expenses. The city is using about

$8.7 million from its reserves to balance the budget, bringing reserves down to about $44 million.

That’s lower than past years, but keeps roughly two months worth of operating expenses on hand.

A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, two days before the council votes on the final budget at its Dec. 18 meeting.

A little bit of math

It’s likely the budget will be adjusted to include more police officers before it is finalized for the Dec. 18 meeting. Hock announced Monday that the city plans to hire three new officers for neighborhood policing and two sergeants.

For the first time in years, the fire department has a full headcount, so $600,000 will be cut from the department’s overtime budget, Hock said. A good portion of that will go toward

the hiring of additional police officers, he said.

District 3 Councilman John Gerl suggested the city could hire more police officers by pulling from the city’s self-funded hospitalization and dental fund – a coffer he believes is over-funded.

As much as $1.5 million could be freed up, he said. The city spent $18.8 million in hospitalization and dental in 2013, and 2014 is on pace to be the same. Yet, the city budgeted $20.9 million in 2015, he said.

“I realize we’re self-funded so that’s always difficult to nail down. … But if you do a little bit of math, I think we’re over-funded in this number,” Gerl said.

But the city’s new finance director, Jim Ghedotte, cautioned against under-funding a category as precarious as health care.

Shorewood’s 2014 tax levy passes with slight increase

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The village of Shorewood passed the 2014 tax levy with a little different preparation this year.

The tax levy was set at $1,561,185, or 4.2 percent more than the 2013 tax extension.

The 2014 estimated extension was calculated at $1,530,146, or 2.3 percent over the 2013 tax extension, exclusive of debt.

“We took the estimating fees out of the calculation and are requesting a levy that is 4.9 percent in excess of last year’s tax extension,” Finance Director Anne Burkholder said at a regular meeting Tuesday, adding that the full amount of that will not be collectible because the limiting rate will come in lower than the calculation.

The levy was calculated with a 2014 net equalized assessed value of $461.9 million, limiting rate of .2602 percent and debt of $328,238.

While trustees voted on

the tax levy Tuesday, they discussed it in a meeting on Oct. 28.

“The policy has been to try to remain dollar neutral with a slight increase,” Mayor Rick Chapman said at that meeting.

The final rate will come in March or April, Burkholder said.

Law office expansion

The board approved rezoning 301 Channahon St. to a B-1 neighborhood convenience shopping center district so Whiteside and Goldberg Law Office can expand into the existing home on the property.

The home will be renovated for use by the law office and will include the addition of a new monument sign.

Trustee Steve Brockman, who chairs the Planning and Zoning Commission, said the owners of neighboring properties expressed issues with landscape screening, an expanded parking lot and a new garage door on the home.

However, he said those issues have been worked out and much of the discussion at the commission’s meeting was on how the improvements to the lot will positively impact the entrance to the town off of Interstate 55 and Route 52.

Land purchase

Trustees also officially approved the small parcel of land at the northeast corner of River Road and Black Road.

The land was owned by the Narvick family, who sold it to the village for $150,000, which was a nearly 50 percent discount from the assessed value of $290,000.

Chapman said the village bought the property to prepare for future water issues.

Other items approved were execution of an intergovernmental agreement with the Will County 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System Board, adoption of the countywide All-Hazards Mitigation Plan and approval of meeting dates for 2015.

Garbage collection

One item that concerned Councilman Jim McFarland is the city’s $448,000 subsidy of Waste Management’s garbage collection services. The city’s extended contract with Waste Management calls for annual 3.5 percent cost increases in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

“So instead of raising the rates on the residents, we’re dipping into reserves to accommodate this increase?” Councilman Jim McFarland asked “This year, yes,” Hock replied.

“But potentially in 2016, 2017,” McFarland said.

“We’ll have to take a look at that. Otherwise it will continue to eat into the general fund balance,” Hock said.

State plans centralized operations; public presentation next week If you go

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The bridges of Joliet will undergo a historic change if a plan to move bridge tenders to a single location gets the green light.

The Illinois Department of Transportation wants to change how the city’s 80-yearold bridges are controlled.

IDOT plans to centralize operation of each bridge to a combined station and will hold a presentation for the public next week. The Cass, Jackson, Jefferson, McDonough and Ruby street bridges, and the Brandon Road Bridge, have on-site bridge tenders raising and lowering each drawbridge when boats or barges pass through.

Installing fiber-optic cables and an array of cameras would move operations to three bridge tenders at the IDOT facility on Bridge Street, according to IDOT bridge maintenance engineer Sarah Wilson.

In addition to making the bridges operate more efficiently, Wilson acknowledged the shift is designed to reduce manpower.

“We’ll go from having six tenders on duty 24/7 to three, but instead of [cutting jobs] we are running heavy in overtime and this will greatly reduce that instead,” she said.

The IDOT presentation on the bridge plan is scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Planning Conference Room at Joliet City Hall.

Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante said job loss was his biggest concern when IDOT went over the plans with city officials last year.

“The other was the safety of not having someone at each [bridge], but they answered my questions,” Giarrante said.

“I think it’d make things safer,” said George Schomig, who has been a tender at the Ruby Street Bridge for four years. “It could take some time to find out if a bridge tender fell or had a heart attack while alone” in the tender’s house compared to working in a shared station, Schomig said.

The project would install between 15 and 20 cameras at each bridge to view the river and approaching auto traffic and pedestrians. Some cameras would offer the controller a view of the river level as a vessel approached and others would address current blind spots from the tender’s house.

According to IDOT, the railroad bridges over the Des Plaines River are operated remotely at control centers in other states.

Outside of Joliet, Illinois has about 35 drawbridges in Chicago and two downstate on

the Illinois River in Florence and Hardin.

Schomig said “there’s no rhyme or reason” to the frequency of vessels coming through Joliet. One day earlier this month had 11 bridge raisings, but there were none the next day.

“October’s the worst month though,” Schomig noted. Be-

sides barges filled with salt coming up the river and grain being sent down, fall also has “$1 million pleasure yachts coming down from Chicago before the freeze,” he said.

U.S. Coast Guard approval is required to centralize bridge operations. IDOT spokeswoman Carson Quinn said the public hearing is part of that process and the Coast Guard did not object during the preliminary stages.

Wilson said the process could begin next fall and possibly finish by late 2017.

“Each bridge will be out of service for one to two months while the control system is set up, tested and brought online,” she said.

Regardless of progress on centralizing operations, the Jefferson Street Bridge will undergo partial repainting next summer, but will remain the same shade of green.

“The feedback we have gotten is that the people of Joliet are very prideful of their bridges,” Quinn said. “None of these improvements are changing the look of them.”

And for any driver stuck at the gate wishing the drawbridges could be replaced altogether with higher permanent structures, like the Ninth Street Bridge in Lockport?

“The only grade where that’s possible is Ruby Street at the top of the hill on the west. But I don’t see funding for a [massive] project like that coming any time soon,” Wilson said.

Morris electoral board hearings continued

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The hearings for arguments on the objections to two Morris candidates running for city offices were continued Tuesday to Dec. 17.

A special meeting of the Municipal Officers Electoral Board of the city of Morris was called Tuesday to hear objections against the petitions of Republican Doug Hayse for 2nd Ward alderman and Republican Mary Callahan for city clerk.

Both objections were filed against their nomination papers for the same reason – improper fastening of petition sheets.

Kristan Smolenski of Morris filed the objection against former Morris and Minooka police chief Hayse, while David Perry of Morris has filed against Callahan, according to the objectors’ petitions.

Both are being represented by attorney Michael Olewinski.

Attorney Robert Geiger represented Hayse and Callahan at the hearing.

Hayse is running in the Feb. 24 primary election

against 2nd Ward Republican incumbent Julian Houston.

Callahan is running against incumbent City Clerk Carol Adair, also a Republican.

About 20 people attended the hearings. In addition to family supporting the candidates, many of the audience members were local Republican party members, including past and present aldermen.

Both attorneys agreed to continue the hearings of both cases to 2 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Morris Municipal Services Facility. In addition, for Hayse, Geiger motioned to have Electoral Board member Adair removed from the board for the case since she will likely be called as a witness.

City Attorney Scott Belt said if she was going to be called as a witness, she needed to recuse herself. Once Adair was recused, Belt said he will have to go to Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr. to file a petition to have a Morris City Council member fill her position on the board. It will likely be Alderman Duane Wolfe, the second senior member of the council.

For the Callahan hearing, Adair was already replaced

by Wolfe since the objection is regarding the clerk position.

Board requirements

By state statute, the electoral board is made up of the mayor, clerk and the most senior member of the council, which is Alderman Ken Sereno.

A hearing officer also is in place. In this case, Joliet attorney James Harvey was designated by the board. The hearing officer will hear the arguments, see the evidence and make a recommendation on the objections to the board.

The board then convenes and makes a final decision, Belt said after the meeting.

The last time the Morris Electoral Board was scheduled to meet was in early 2009 when Martha Shugart was running for an aldermanic seat against Randy Larson, and when Kenneth Driskill was running against Mayor Richard Kopczick. Both candidates had their signatures objected to and both ended up withdrawing their petitions for office before the board actually met.

Counterfeit money still being circulated

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The use of counterfeit money is still being reported in Morris.

Police received another report Monday from a local Morris store of having a counterfeit $100 bill used that seems to match the bills used at other locations in town, Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said. The bill was believed to be used Nov. 29.

“We are getting the information out to businesses, and the banks are well aware of it,” Dite said Tuesday.

The first report was made Nov. 30. Two older style $100 bills with the same serial number were passed in the same store, but in separate transactions.

The offender in this case was captured on surveillance video. He is described as a black male, between 18 and 30 years old, between 5’10” to 6’3” tall, weighing between 170 and 210 pounds, wearing dark clothing and

a stocking cap. He possibly drove a white full-size van with writing on the side, according to a news release.

Dite said Tuesday police still were working on the surveillance video.

A second report was made by another business that received a counterfeit $20 bill. The business believed the bill was received during a Nov. 30 transaction. A report also was made by a local bank that received a counterfeit $100 bill that matched the serial number of the previous $100 bills reported.

The U.S. Secret Service has been working with Morris police on the investigation.

Businesses and banks are advised to be diligent in examining bills that might be counterfeit, especially during this holiday season.

New Lenox looks to demolish former Brun’s tavern

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – New Lenox village officials will consider tearing down a landmark building that was once home to Brun’s Tavern and Restaurant.

More than 70 years old, the building is one of four locations the village plans to replace with new businesses in an effort to redevelop the downtown area.

Mayor Tim Baldermann said the building, which became the House of Hughes some time after it was sold in

1993, has “a lot of history” and was an “outstanding restaurant,” but needed to go. The House of Hughes has been closed for three to four years.

“It’s become an eyesore. It’ll be good to tear it down to make way for new development,” Baldermann said.

Trustees voted at Monday’s village board meeting to table the approval of a bid to demolish the building at 201 E. Maple Road, Baldermann said. He said the village received a bid to tear down four properties at once, but wanted a bid for de-

molishing the House of Hughes building alone.

He said the village “may not close on the [other] properties for a while.”

The other properties are the BP gas station, a dry cleaner business and the Pit Stop Bar. Along with the House of Hughes, the village plans on buying the properties and redeveloping them through a new developer.

The village outlined a plan in June to buy the BP gas station for roughly $1.6 million; the dry cleaner business for

$309,000; and the Pit Stop bar for $375,000. The village bought the House of Hughes for about $505,000.

Each property is located along Route 30.

Another part of the village’s plan is to use the sales tax and other revenue sources from the redeveloped downtown to build a new train station.

Fire, police commissioners appointed

At Monday’s village board meeting, Baldermann also re-appointed two members to

the New Lenox Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, and appointed one new member. Trustees unanimously approved the appointments.

Garry Kraemer and Leonard Caria were re-appointed, while Brad Vinson replaced Thomas Difiori, who moved out of the village, Baldermann said.

The commission is an independent board staffed by volunteers responsible for testing, hiring, promoting, terminating and discipline for the New Lenox Police Department.

Revenue up at Harrah’s Casino

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – All but three casinos statewide – including Harrah’s Casino in Joliet – saw declines in admissions and revenue last month.

According to the latest figures from the Illinois Gaming Board, Harrah’s Casino in Joliet brought in about $16.5 million in November, representing a 1.6 percent increase from November 2013. It’s the second time in two months the casino experienced increases in revenue and admissions.

Hollywood’s Casino brought in about $9 million – or 6.6 percent fewer dollars compared to the same month last year.

Collectively, the two casinos brought in about $1.5 million in taxes for the city of Joliet last

month, on par with November 2013.

Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, the state’s newest casino and the biggest moneymaker, saw a slight increase in revenue, raking in $34.1 million. It remains the state’s most attended casino, but admissions dropped nearly nine percent.

In all, the state’s 10 casinos generated $116.6 million last month, representing a 3.6 percent decrease, compared to November 2013. Admissions are down about 8.3 percent statewide.

Bucking the trend was Harrah’s Casino in Metropolis.

The downstate casino saw a 17 percent increase in revenue and 31.4 percent increase in admissions last month compared to November 2013.

Bolingbrook siblings 20TH ANNUAL recruited online for IS

By KEVIN SULLIVAN The Washington Post CHICAGO – Mohammed Hamzah Khan, 19, rose before dawn on Oct. 4 to pray with his father and 16-year-old brother at their neighborhood mosque.

When they returned to their Bolingbrook home just before 6 a.m., the father went back to bed and the Khan teens secretly launched a plan they had been hatching for months: to abandon their family and country and travel to Syria to join the Islamic State.

While his parents slept, Khan gathered three newly issued U.S. passports and $2,600 worth of airline tickets to Turkey that he had gotten for himself, his brother and their 17-year-old sister. The three teens slipped out of the house, called a taxi and rode to O’Hare International Airport.

The Khan teens, U.S.-born children of Indian immigrants, each left letters for their parents explaining their motives.

“An Islamic State has been established and it is thus obligatory upon every able-bodied male and female to migrate there,” Khan wrote. “Muslims have been crushed under foot for too long. ... This nation is openly against Islam and Muslims. ... I do not want my progeny to be raised in a filthy environment like this.”

His sister wrote: “Death is inevitable, and all of the times we enjoyed will not matter as we lay on our death beds.

Death is an appointment, and we cannot delay or postpone, and what we did to prepare for our death is what will matter.”

In their letters, all three teens, who had grown up playing basketball and watching “Dragon Tales” and “Batman,” told their parents how much they loved them and asked them to join them in Syria, but made it clear they would probably never see them again, except in the afterlife. They begged them not to call the police.

In the afternoon, FBI agents knocked on the Khans’ front door, armed with a search warrant.

“For what?” asked the teens’ shocked father, Shafi Khan.

“We were stunned.

More like frozen. We were just frozen.”

The Khan teens are part of a growing number of young Americans who are joining or attempting to travel to Syria or Iraq to join the Islamic State.

This year alone, officials have detained at least 15 U.S. citizens – nine of them female – who were trying to travel to Syria to join the militants. Almost all of them were Muslims in their teens or early 20s.

A senior U.S. official said the government anticipates more arrests. Authorities are closely monitoring social media networks, where recruiters from the Islamic State aggressively target youths as young as 14.

“Their propaganda is unusually slick. They are broadcasting their poison in something like 23 languages,” FBI Director James Comey said in a recent speech, adding that the terrorist group is trying to attract “both fighters and people who would be the spouses ... to their warped world.”

‘They are our children’

Mohammed Hamzah Khan has been charged with providing material support to a designated terrorist organization and faces up to 15 years in prison. His two siblings, minors whose names have not been made public, were released to their parents but are under investigation and could face charges.

In court last month, Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Hiller said Khan and his two siblings “believe they are religiously obliged to support violent jihad.”

But Khan’s lawyer, Thomas Anthony Durkin, told the judge that the government was prosecuting Khan for what amounted to the “thought crime” of rejecting America and supporting the establishment of an Islamic homeland. He said the Khan teens wanted to go live in that homeland but not become fighters, a desire that he said was naive and misguided but not criminal.

Durkin cited a speech President Barack Obama gave in September at the United Nations, where he said the Islamic State’s “propaganda has coerced young people to travel abroad to fight their wars and turned ... young people full of potential into suicide bombers.

We must offer an alternative vision.”

“This is the alternative vision we’re getting today: jail,” Durkin told the judge. “If we want to solve this problem, we are not going to solve it by threatening to lock people up forever. ... We have to find a solution, because these are American children. ... They are not barbarians. They are our children.”

Khan’s parents, in an interview at Durkin’s Chicago law office one recent evening, said they were bewildered by what their children tried to do.

“What they wrote in those letters is not from us,” Zarine Khan said, her voice rising behind a colorful veil that covered her face, except for her eyes.

“Those are not our teachings.

That’s not what we believe in.

This didn’t even come from our family, friends, neighbors – nobody.

“We tried to be the best parents we could,” she said.

“That’s all I can say – we tried our best. And they are good kids. This thing came out of the blue. We are still trying to figure it out.”

Hamzah Khan grew up in a suburban American home with a basketball hoop in the backyard. He earned a Presidential Physical Fitness Award in eighth grade and loved Naruto, the Japanese manga. He

LOCKPORT – Pre-sale tickets for the Roxy Group’s Christmas event at Lockport’s historic theater will be on sale until Thursday.

The tickets will be on sale at Olde Towne Cafe, 1011 S. State St. On Saturday, the group will host festive screenings of “White Christmas” and “A Christmas Story” at the Roxy Theater, 1017 S. State St. The event is one of many the Roxy Group has hosted this year to draw more people to the theater building.

The doors will open for the showing of “White Christmas” at 3:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 4 p.m. Tickets will be $7.

Renee Lang, Roxy Group chairwoman, said the viewing will be more interactive.

Audience members are encouraged to sing and bring noisemakers to the movie.

“They just play along and be interactive with that movie,” she said.

A half-hour before the movie starts, there will be a sing-a-

long with Santa, she said.

At 7 p.m., the doors will open for the showing of “A Christmas Story,” and the movie will start at 7:45 p.m.

Older audience members are encouraged to bring their own beer, which has proved popular in past events, Lang said.

People have told her they want to see more BYOB (Bring Your Own Beer), she said.

“I wanted to make sure I kept that going, where it’s a type of theme where it’s a well-known movie people can have fun with,” she said.

The showing also comes with additional entertainment from Ursa Ensemble, which will perform Christmas classics.

Next year, the Roxy Group plans to raise money to repair the building, to continue hosting more events. The group wants to have weekends booked with community events and make the building into a spot where organizations can host their own events.

How do you treat arthritis in your feet?

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis.

It affects about half of all arthritis sufferers.

When it strikes the feet, it can be particularly distressing. Although there is little soft tissue swelling, joints often become enlarged, stiff and painful. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed for the pain, and certain exercises can relieve some of the pressure by strengthening muscles around the joints.

“There’s a defensiveness that compels parents to pull their kids out of everything,” Mozaffar said. “A lot of parents feel overwhelmed and don’t know what to do, so they try to isolate their children.”

The result is often that American Muslim children find themselves caught between two worlds. They are American, but they feel their parents and their religious leaders trying to steer them away from American culture.

‘Sheik Google’

That can leave them vulnerable to those who promise something better, a place where they are celebrated for their religion. And, recently, that message often comes in the form of the network of anonymous, persuasive recruiters on social media who lure vulnerable youth to join the Islamic State. Quadri calls them “Sheik Google.”

According to Shafi and Zarine Khan and court doc-

uments, the Khan children’s “Sheik Google” appears to have been a man with the nom du guerre Abu Qa’qa, whom they met on Twitter.

Hamzah Khan and his sister both had Twitter accounts, which they accessed on their cellphones because their parents closely controlled their Internet use on their home computer.

Khan’s sister went by the Twitter name “Umm Bara” and signed her tweets with @ deathisvnear. Prosecutors said that in May, she tweeted about watching an hourlong Islamic State propaganda video called “Saleel Sawarim,” which features photos and videos of beheadings and other gruesome violence.

The letters the three teens left behind were filled with rhetoric their parents said was so out of character it could only have come from Islamic State recruiters.

“I am ... obliged to pay taxes to the [U.S.] government,” Hamzah Khan wrote. “This in turn will be used automatically to kill my Muslim brothers and sisters. ... I simply cannot sit here and let my brothers and sisters get killed, with my own

hard-earned money. ... I cannot live under a law in which I’m afraid to speak my beliefs. I want to be ruled by the Sharia [Islamic law]. ... Me living in comfort with my family while my other family are getting killed is plain selfish.”

Sitting in Durkin’s office while their two younger teens worked on homework in the other room, Shafi and Zarine Khan said they are struggling to understand how their children could write such things.

Durkin would not permit interviews with the younger siblings.

The Khans knew their kids were on Twitter and Kik, a messaging service, but they said they didn’t know they were communicating with strangers overseas.

“I think they were completely brainwashed by whatever online things they were reading,” Zarine Khan said. “I wouldn’t want any parent to go through what we are going through; it’s a nightmare. We just thank God that our kids are with us here, and not over there.”

Shafi Khan, who came to Chicago from India almost 30 years ago, and Zarine Khan, who followed her husband 20 years ago, said they consider themselves “average” Muslims, no more or less religious than any of their friends and neighbors in Bolingbrook.

They try to pray five times a day but said they often don’t.

Shafi Khan wears a bushy beard and a white knit skull cap, which he said is an attempt to follow the example of the prophet Muhammad. Zarine Khan covers her head and most of her face, which she considers a sign of modesty, not extreme piety.

Like millions of American Muslims, the Khans, who are both U.S. citizens, said they have raised their children to love their country and their religion. Asked if he felt more Muslim or American, Shafi Khan said, “Both.”

Shafi Khan, 48, earned a degree in environmental science from Northeastern Illinois University and has worked for many years as an event planner for a humanitarian aid organization. Zarine Khan, 41, studied genetics and microbiology at an Indian university but gave it up to move to Chicago with her new husband.

They have four children – the three who were arrested, plus a 3-year-old girl – and Zarine Khan has worked for many years as a teacher at a local Islamic school.

The Khans tried to shield their children from unwanted influences. They had a TV when the children were younger, but they had no cable service. The TV was used solely for showing DVDs – mainly cartoons and educational CDs from the public library.

When Hamzah Khan was about 8 years old, the family

got rid of the TV, because by then they had a computer with Internet access, which the parents carefully monitored.

“We didn’t want to expose them to adult stuff,” Zarine Khan said. “We wanted to preserve their innocence. We wanted to channel their intelligence into their studies and to becoming good human beings.”

The children studied at a local Islamic school, which offered a standard U.S. curriculum of English, math and science – but also classes on Islam. The Khans’ daughter, who turned 18 shortly after her arrest, was being homeschooled by her mother so she could graduate early from high school and begin studies to become a physician.

Zarine Khan said the family took many vacations together, driving to Niagara Falls and Connecticut. She said they shopped at Wal-Mart and acted “like any other normal American family.”

Omer Mozaffar, a Muslim community leader who teaches theology at Loyola University Chicago and the University of Chicago, said many Muslim families appear to have sheltered their children from the

HAZEL D. CARLSON Hazel Dorine Carlson, nee Ennis, passed away Friday, December 5, 2014, at Holy Cross Hospital In Chicago, Illinois.

Hazel is survived by her daughters, Hazel D Carlson, Elaine L. Carlson; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews; as well as a brother Thomas Ennis.

JEANNETTE GARDNER Jeannette Gardner, was born on Jan. 17, 1917, in Hastings, Nebraska to Archie B. and Grace (Bigelow) Hopper.

She was a graduate of Northwestern University (1938) with a B.S. in English and a Minor in Music. Jeannette was a member of the A Cappella Choir and Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She taught English and Music at Dix, NE and at Richmond, IL schools. As an active member of the Community Church of Richmond (United Church of Christ) she directed the senior choir for over 30 years and sang for countless weddings and funerals. She also served as a piano accompanist at Richmond High School. Jeannette was a member of McHenry County Homemakers, and was on the county board for two terms.

Jeannette married Robert W. Gardner in 1941 in Hastings, NE and is survived by three daughters, Nancy Cole (Clayton) Centennial, CO, Jane Fry (Robert) Omaha, NE, and Ellen Ornberg (Eric) Westfir,

OR; daughter-in-law, Cindy Gardner, Solon Mills, IL, and Mary Ann Gardner, University Park, MD; thirteen grandchildren, Matthew Gardner, Sarah DeBelen, Adam Gardner, Ryan Gardner, Nathan Gardner, Jennifer Loh, Julie Cole, Brian Cole, Kathy Fry, Greg Fry, Ben Fry, Anders Ornberg, Chad Ornberg and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, David Gardner and Bruce Gardner; and husband, Robert Gardner.

Sandy is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, John N. He was born on September 24, 1930, in Chicago to Russell and Nellie (Grace) Grundy. He attended St. Philip’s High School earning a football scholarship to St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA. He continued his education at Lewis College in Lockport, IL where he continued to play football. He married Elaine Crespi October 30th, 1954 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Joliet, IL. With guidance from his former teacher and coach Gordie Gillespie, he taught at Joliet Catholic High School and was an assistant coach for the football program there in the 1960s. In 1968 he, Elaine and family moved to Wausau after taking a teaching/head football coach job at Newman High School. He retired in 1990. He remained active coaching at the college and high school levels after retirement. He and Elaine built a log cabin in Ogema, Wisconsin where many family gatherings were held. He loved fishing, berry picking, playing cards, and writing his memoirs.

He is survived by his children, Meg (Adam) Bradley, Mpls. MN, Kathleen (Gary) Schneck, Wausau, Susan (Paul) Beasom, Park City, UT, Russell (Jane) Grundy, Hartford, WI, Kevin (Lori) Grundy, Wausau, Jennifer (Gil Petrovic) Grundy, Milwaukee, WI; 11 grandchildren; his brother, Jim (Mary) Grundy, Chicago; sister in-law, Rosie Bell, Joliet, IL, and many nieces and nephews.

Ana Maria was a very loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was well known for her kindness, caring and nurturing of everyone, beautiful flower garden and wonderful sense of humor.

Ana Maria is preceded in death by her husband, Juan Renteria; one daughter, Isabel Gloria; and her parents, Mariano & Catalina (nee Anaya) Aragon.

Bob enjoyed endless weekends at Wilmington Recreation Club camping and fishing with his family.

His greatest joy was spending countless hours fishing in the boat with his children and winning numerous fishing contests. Bob also enjoyed the Lake Erie fishing trips and euchre games with close family and friends.

Maria was born September 6, 1927, in Ottawa, IL to the late Maurilio and Josefina (nee Abarca) Alonzo.

La Grange Park school closes during flu outbreak

LA GRANGE PARK – A La Grange Park high school has been closed until Thursday after a quarter of the school’s 730 students were absent Monday because they were sick with the flu.

Eighteen teachers and staff members at Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park also were out sick Monday and principal Deborah Tracy said that in more than 20 years at the school she has never seen an outbreak that hit this hard this quickly.

School officials say students started getting sick a couple of weeks ago and the number has been climbing ever since.

Workers at the school are cleaning the school, scrubbing door handles, bathrooms and classrooms.

Trial set for man accused of SIU threats

BENTON – A federal trial is scheduled for early next year for a Chicago man accused of mailing threats of beheadings, bombings and other violence to Southern Illinois University’s Carbondale campus.

A federal judge in Benton slated 21-year-old Derrick Dawon Burns’ trial to begin Feb. 2.

Burns remains jailed on felony charges related to threatening mailings he allegedly sent in 2012 and last year.

Investigators say most of the letters suggested SIU would be targeted with violence ranging from rapes to beheadings, use of pipe bombs, shooting rampages, the unleashing of “deadly chemical powder” and arson.

One of the mailings prompted the precautionary evacuation of the campus’ three dorms housing a combined 2,100 students.

Burns has pleaded not guilty, and his attorney has declined to speak publicly about his case.

Obama friend won’t testify in grant fraud case

SPRINGFIELD – Federal prosecutors said Tuesday that they don’t plan to call a friend of President Barack Obama’s to testify in a trial over funds allegedly misused at the Illinois Department of Public Health after Dr. Eric Whitaker made what they describe as “baseless accusations” about racial bias.

The decision not to call Whitaker to the witness stand was announced a day after Judge Richard Mills declared Whitaker a “hostile witness” after a twohour hearing outside the presence of a jury. That declaration would give prosecutors leeway in questioning him in the fraud case, in which Chicago businessman Leon Dingle is accused of diverting $3 million in Department of Public Health grant money for his personal use.

While Whitaker, a Chicago physician and the agency’s director from 2003 to 2007, has not been accused of a crime, the U.S. attorney’s office said he has reneged on an agreement to cooperate.

Whitaker said Monday he had answered “every single question but that question” referring to

attorney queries about whether he had a sexual relationship his former chief of staff, Quinshaunta “Quin” Golden, who pleaded guilty in the case last spring and awaits sentencing.

Whitaker described the relationship with Golden on Monday as “more than friends.”

“Personally,” he said, “I’m upset about the process and being made to look like I’m on trial.”

He said what he was refusing to answer were questions about an affair.

U. of Illinois faces fallout as Kilgore rehired

CHAMPAIGN – Former 1970s radical and convicted felon James Kilgore will earn $3,500 for teaching a single class on labor and the workplace at the University of Illinois’ flagship campus. His rehiring comes at a more significant cost – a large promised donation and another round of controversy.

Richard C. Hill, a graduate of the University of Illinois-Chicago and former tech-industry CEO, was angered by Kilgore’s return and said he’ll withhold $4.5 million he had promised to donate to the university system.

Hill also resigned as board

chairman of the university’s fundraising arm.

Meanwhile, state Sen. Chapin Rose, who graduated from the Urbana-Champaign campus, said he’ll push for legislation to make sure the school can’t hire convicted felons again.

Bond for Arab activist who hid Israel bombing role

DETROIT – An Arab-American activist convicted of failing to tell U.S. immigration officials about her conviction for a fatal bombing in Israel can be released from jail if she comes up with $50,000 cash, a federal judge in Detroit said Monday.

The judge reversed his earlier decision denying bond to Rasmieh Odeh of Chicago while she awaits her sentence in March.

Judge Gershwin Drain said he no longer believes the 67-year-old is likely to flee.

Drain cited her work in Chicago, where she runs the daily operations of the Arab American Action Network, in his decision to grant bond.

A jury convicted Odeh when the Palestinian native applied for U.S. citizenship in Detroit in 2004.

At least five men in CIA detention received “rectal rehydration,” a form of feeding through the rectum. The report found no medical necessity for the treatment.

At least three in captivity were told their families would suffer, with CIA officers threatening to harm their children, sexually abuse the mother of one man, and cut the throat of another man’s mother.

Zubaydah was held in a secret facility in Thailand, called “detention Site Green” in the report. Early on, with CIA officials believing he had information on an imminent plot, Zubaydah was left isolated for 47 days without questioning,

the report says. Later, he was subjected to the panoply of techniques. He later suffered mental problems.

He wasn’t alone.

In September 2002, at a facility referred to as COBALT– the CIA’s “Salt Pit” in Afghanistan – detainees were kept isolated and in darkness.

Their cells had only a bucket for human waste.

Redha al-Najar, a former Osama bin Laden bodyguard, was the first prisoner there.

CIA interrogators found that after a month of sleep deprivation, he was a “broken man.”

But the treatment got worse, with officials lowering food rations, shackling him in the cold and giving him a diaper instead of toilet access.

WASHINGTON – The United States brutalized scores of terror suspects with interrogation tactics that turned secret CIA prisons into chambers of suffering and did nothing to make America safer after the 9/11 attacks, Senate investigators concluded Tuesday.

The Senate Intelligence Committee’s torture report, years in the making, accused the CIA of misleading its political masters about what it was doing with its “black site” captives and deceiving the nation about the effectiveness of its techniques.

The report was the first public accounting of tactics employed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and it described far harsher actions than had been widely known.

Tactics included confinement to small boxes, weeks of sleep deprivation, simulated drowning, slapping and slamming, and threats to kill, harm or sexually abuse families of the captives.

The report produced revulsion among many, challenges to its veracity among some lawmakers and a sharp debate about whether it should have been released at all.

GOP Sen. John McCain, tortured in Vietnam as a prisoner of war, was out of step with some fellow Republicans in welcoming the report and endorsing its findings.

“We gave up much in the expectation that torture would make us safer,” he said in a Senate speech. “Too much.”

Five hundred pages were released, representing the executive summary and conclusions of a still-classified 6,700page full investigation.

President Barack Obama declared the past practices to be “contrary to our values” and pledged, “I will continue to use my authority as president to make sure we never resort to those methods again.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the Democratic committee chairman whose staff prepared the summary, branded the findings a stain on the nation’s history.

“Under any common meaning of the term, CIA detainees were tortured,” she declared,

commanding the Senate floor for an extended accounting of the techniques identified in the investigation.

T h e r e p o r t Sen. Dianne cataloged the Feinstein use of ice baths, death threats, shackling in the cold and much more. Three detainees faced the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding.

Many developed psychological problems.

But the “enhanced interrogation techniques” didn’t produce the results that really mattered, the report asserts in its most controversial conclusion. It cites CIA cables, emails and interview transcripts to rebut the central justification for torture – that it thwarted terror plots and saved American lives.

In a statement, CIA Director John Brennan said the agency made mistakes and has learned from them.

But he also asserted the coercive techniques “did produce intelligence that helped thwart attack plans, capture terrorists and save lives.”

George Tenet, who was CIA director at the time, said in an interview, “We know that the program led to the capture of al-Qaida leaders and took them off the battlefield, that it prevented mass casualty attacks and that it saved thousands of American lives.”

Top Republicans, including Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, agreed.

But not Democrat Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate majority leader. He said, “It got us nothing except a bad name.”

The report, released after months of negotiations with the administration about what should be censored, was issued as U.S. embassies and military sites worldwide fortified security in case of an anti-American backlash.

Earlier this year, Feinstein accused the CIA of infiltrating Senate computer systems in a dispute over documents as relations between the investigators and the spy agency deteriorated, the issue still sensitive years after Obama ordered a halt to any such interrogation practices upon taking office.

Few campus sex assaults reported to police

By KIMBERLY HEFLING The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Only a fraction of campus sexual assault victims go to police.

Senators on Tuesday grappled with the thorny issue of why some just let their college handle it – or don’t report it at all.

Some sexual assault victims have said they prefer to work within their university system to seek disciplinary action against the perpetrator, such as expulsion, without the stress of pressing criminal charges. But there have been complaints that universities have encouraged victims not to seek criminal action because they want to protect the university’s reputation or that schools aren’t prepared to adequately adjudicate such cases.

“I am concerned that law enforcement is being marginalized when it comes to the crime of campus sexual assault,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., the subcommittee chairman, at a hearing on the issue. “I’m concerned that the specter of flawed law enforcement overshadows the harm of marginalized law enforcement.”

The hearing, focused on the relationship between police departments and campuses, comes following a high-profile Rolling Stone article that described a gang rape alleged to have occurred in a fraternity house at the University of Virginia. The magazine later acknowledged mistakes in its reporting.

In many cases, victims are not told they can pursue a criminal case, testified Peg Langhammer, executive director of the Day One organization in Providence, Rhode Island.

Whitehouse said victims are victimized again if they are steered away from law enforcement based on uninformed choices. Whitehouse, a former U.S. attorney and attorney general in his home state, said evidence shows most men who commit these crimes are serial offenders – and a threat to public safety. He said students have a right to know delays opening an investigation and collecting evidence could make the case difficult to prove later.

On campuses, there’s often no clearly identified place for a victim to seek help, testified Angela Fleischer, assistant director of student support and intervention for confidential advising at Southern Oregon University, which links law enforcement and campus administrators in cases of sexual assault.

While some victims do immediately call the police or go directly to a hospital for an exam, others seek out a friend, family member or trusted person on campus, and it’s not imAngela mediate that Fleischer they process what happened, Fleischer said after the hearing.

“Sometimes, victims and survivors aren’t calling what happened to them rape,” Fleischer said. “They know something bad happened, something they were displeased with, but they aren’t always thinking, ‘A crime of rape was committed against me.’ ” She stressed the importance of close coordination between the campus and local police and said reporting of campus sexual assaults has increased since the school began working with law enforcement to make it a “viable, victim-centered option.”

Many schools have their own police forces, but their role varies from campus to campus. About a third of schools said campus police and security guards weren’t required to be trained to respond to reports of sexual violence, according to a survey released earlier this year by Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. She said that the criminal justice system has been “very bad” in its handling of victims – much worse than the military or campuses – and that has left many victims’ advocates with the belief that campus sexual assault cases are better handled within a college’s system. Complicating and confusing the situation, she said, is that the criminal justice system and federal education law each have their own protocols for how the cases should be handled.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., is co-sponsoring a bill with McCaskill that would force colleges to have a memorandum of understanding with their local law enforcement over handling such cases. She said the ultimate goal is that 100 percent of victims report to

police. “But, time and again, I have heard from far too many survivors of campus sexual assault that they have felt re-victimized by the process of trying to seek justice for the crime committed against them,” Gillibrand said.

Cornell University Police, testified that while a memorandum of understanding can be helpful, it won’t necessarily solve the problems. She said there’s no guarantee local law enforcement will cooperate, and some governmental agencies have policies prohibiting them.

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that warehouse workers who fill orders for retail giant Amazon don’t have to be paid for time spent waiting to pass through security checks at the end of their shifts.

The unanimous decision is a victory for the growing number of retailers and other companies that routinely screen workers to prevent employee theft. The justices said federal law does not require companies to pay employees for the extra time because it is unrelated to their primary job duties.

Some workers at Amazon contractor Integrity Staffing Solutions Inc. claim they wait up to 25 minutes to clear security before they can go home. Amazon has disputed those claims.

IG: IRS paid $6 billion in bogus child tax credits

WASHINGTON – The IRS paid at least $6 billion in child tax credits in 2013 to people not eligible to receive them, a government investigator said Tuesday.

Payments went to families that mistakenly claimed the tax credit or claimed the wrong amount, as well as taxpayers who committed fraud, according to an audit by J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general.

The audit highlights problems with a tax credit President Barack Obama championed as a way to help low-income working families.

The 2009 economic stimulus package temporarily expanded the credit to more families not earning enough to pay federal income tax. These families receive the $1,000-per-child credit in the form of a tax refund.

Police protests are drawing people from all walks of life

The Associated Press The mostly white crowd that gathered outside Salt Lake City’s federal building hoisted signs reading “Black Lives Matter,” and chanted for justice before wading into downtown traffic. In the Boston suburb of Lexington, Massachusetts, protesters with children in tow stood alongside others in their 80s.

Across the country, protesters angered at the killing of unarmed black men by white police officers have turned out in recent days, many in cities far removed from where the most highly publicized cases have played out. They are students and grandmothers, experienced protesters as well as novices, often as many white as black.

But as marchers speak emotionally about being galvanizing by this cause, they and experts on the history of U.S. social protest are hardpressed to figure where the demands for change will lead.

“Is this a movement or a moment?” said Marshall Ganz, a Harvard University lecturer whose perspective was shaped by participation in the 1964 Freedom Summer civil rights drive in Mississippi and by 16 years working to organize migrant farm workers.

Will marches keep going and growing? That will turn on organizers’ ability to funnel frustration over deaths into a push for concrete demands, said David Meyer, author of “The Politics of Protest: Social Movements in

America,” and a University of California-Irvine professor.

That is a path some individual protesters struggle to visualize. But their accounts of how they came to join protests show how an issue that for many was important, but abstract, has turned into something deeply personal.

Among them is Sarah Morton, a white 45-year-old playwright and a native Clevelander who was horrified last spring when city police officers chased two unarmed suspects into a schoolyard and fired more than 100 shots into their car, killing both. She worries about the students, most of them black, that she knows from her work as an artist-in-residence at Cleveland School of the Arts.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Working to keep Holy Ghost Ministry alive in Joliet To the Editor:

My name is Steve Sherwood. I am a legally ordained minister and the guy with the dog who pushed the bike.

Sometimes I think people are quick to judge. Just today, someone asked me why I choose to be homeless. I am 52 now and have been homeless since I was 38 (not by choice).

Living in his light, Holy Ghost Ministry has endured unfair and unjust adversity and disadvantages – not to mention the personal suffering I’ve endured because of being homeless for the last 14 years.

Despite all of the hardships, the ministry is visible and well-known in the Joliet area. I have had the extreme honor of serving God and helping many people physically and spiritually – and the great honor of meeting good people, many of whom are my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Sometimes I meet people who think I need fixing, and it isn’t long before they try to – suggesting that I change

how I dress, groom, talk, feel and think.

They think they’re doing me a favor, then get mad at me because I won’t change into what they feel I should be.

I swear if let them, they’d kiss me and turn me into a frog.

But God already has changed me. I know their intentions are good; but as the old cliche goes, “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” I also meet people who offer me a place to stay. Most of us know when you stay with someone, you always feel like a guest. You never feel comfortable or like you’re in your own home, and sometimes even feel obligated to them.

Myself and Minister Enrique Esquivel have worked hard to ensure this ministry is active in Joliet. As I’ve said, I am 52, and I don’t know how much longer I can do this under these conditions. I believe God can make miracles happen in this situation. I will not give up. The only thing which will make that happen is if I have no breath in my body.

Lame-duck sessions in Illinois should be eliminated SPRINGFIELD – When a tax hike is put in the hands of lame-duck lawmakers, taxpayers should expect to be goosed.

We found that out four years ago, during the final minutes of a lame-duck legislative session when lawmakers shoved through and Gov. Pat Quinn signed a “temporary” 67 percent income tax increase.

And lo and behold, many of those outgoing lawmakers landed high-paying jobs within the Quinn administration.

Their very last act as elected officials was to do as Quinn asked and vote to raise taxes.

The measure passed without a vote to spare. Some folks even campaigned they wouldn’t vote to raise taxes; but after they lost the election, they did just that.

Did they have a political epiphany that Illinoisans were

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder under-taxed? Or could it be they heard the siren call of state jobs in the future?

We’ll never know for sure what was going through a particular lawmaker’s mind in the waning minutes of their political careers. But we do know some of these folks the voters took off the state payroll were drawing state paychecks once again.

Just consider: • Former state Rep. Bob Flider is the now director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The job pays $133,273. That’s a pretty sweet gig for someone who never has lived on a farm.

• Former state Rep. Careen Gordon became a lawyer handling real estate licensing for the state. The job pays $88,200. Gordon left that job in November after Quinn lost his re-election bid.

• Former state Rep. Mike Smith, who died this year, snagged a job with the Education Labor Relations Board that paid $93,926.

In fact, of the 12 lame-duck legislators who voted for the tax increase, at least half ended up with state jobs.

During their final moments in elected office, were they more concerned about their own employment prospects or serving the voters who just kicked them out of office?

We’ll never know for sure what these people were thinking. But sadly, in Illinois politics, situations like these

are all too common.

Illinois shouldn’t have lame duck sessions. Rarely do they serve the interests of voters well.

We just finished a quiet lame-duck session in Springfield. Quinn told journalists before the election that he hoped to see lawmakers make the temporary tax hike permanent during the lame-duck session.

But that didn’t happen.

Could it be that lawmakers had little incentive to please a governor heading to the unemployment line?

Well, his lame-duck legislative agenda died faster than a mallard pumped full of birdshot.

Not only did lawmakers not vote to hike taxes, the House ignored Quinn’s call for raising the minimum wage.

If lawmakers are going to

vote on issues such as these, it should be when they are most accountable to the voters, not the least.

That’s why lame-duck sessions should be eliminated.

Four years ago, the temporary tax increase was sold as a way to get the state’s financial house in order.

But it hasn’t worked out.

Despite the state’s staggering debt, Quinn and lawmakers upped spending when they received the extra tax dollars.

Proof once again Illinois has a spending problem, not a revenue one. And the Legislature functions best when voters can hold it accountable.

Led by a second-half explosion from 6-foot freshman center Jahari Smith, Romeoville (5-1, 2-0) rolled past Plainfield South, 58-51, Tuesday night to remain undefeated in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

Smith scored 15 of her 17 points and hauled down 12 of her game-high 16 rebounds in the second half.

“I didn’t play well in the first half,” Smith said.

“Coach [Julio] Carrasco talked with me at halftime, and I just went out on the court and played my game.”

Sophomore guard Alexis Marin scored a game-high 22 points for the Spartans and dished out six assists. Romeoville senior captain Cherish Smith scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Smith added 10 big rebounds to the victory.

Erasing a 15-point deficit, Plainfield South (3-6,0-2) cut the Romeoville lead to 47-41 with 4:54 left when Cherish Smith came up with a steal.

The senior stole the ball and laid in a coast-to-coast bucket to finish off the Cougar drive.

It was the Jahari Smith show in the third quarter as Romeoville outscored Plainfield South, 14-5, to open up a

39-29 lead after three quarters.

Smith scored seven points and hauled in five rebounds.

The freshman was even better in quarter No. 4. Smith scored eight points and added seven more boards, five on the offensive glass. Eight of her 16 rebounds were of the offensive variety.

Plainfield South was led by 6-foot-4 junior Alyssa Fink, who had 12 points and eight rebounds.

“I had a long talk with her, and she really responded.

His team, which he says may be his best from a chemistry standpoint, entered Tuesday night’s game at Olivet Nazarene JV with an 8-2 record.

“The Hall of Fame thing, it’s a humbling honor,” Kuhn said. “It’s something you don’t really think about. But then you look back at what all your teams accomplished, that you’ve won a lot of games, and you say you did some good stuff. Still, the Hall is quite an honor they put upon you.”

Kuhn is in his 18th season as the Wolves’ head coach.

The National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national championship in 2010 heads his resume, followed by second-place finishes in 2005 and 2008, a third in 1998, seventh in 2011 and eighth in 2004. He entered Tuesday with a 396-175 overall record at JJC. “I’ve been fortunate to have good players,” Kuhn said. “I think back to the first year. I had a 6-2 guard named Mike Ellis, who was a tremendous shooter and a great kid. Then we got Ryan White.

At our level, how can you get anyone better? You have to keep getting a couple like that every year. They make you look good.”

I have not had the opportunity yet to get out to Wills Gymnasium to see this edition of the Wolves, which is ranked No. 10 in Division III. But some observers are raving about how well this team plays together and how much fun it is to watch.

“We have a few more local kids this season, and we got some really good ones who come from outside the area,” Kuhn said. “We have good chemistry. These kids really seem to like each other. They support each other.

Not satisfied, but Plainfield E. wins by 20

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent OSWEGO – As 20-point victories go, Plainfield East’s 62-42 rout of Oswego East on Tuesday night might have been as unimpressive as they come.

Even Illinois-bound senior Aaron Jordan, who scored 20 points to lead the Bengals, thought so.

“Our motto this year is ‘never satisfied,’ ” Jordan said. “We had too many missed layups, too many missed free throws. And we were not better in the turnover department.”

The Bengals gave away the ball 17 times in Saturday’s loss to Hillcrest.

They coughed it up 16 times – 19 by coach Branden Adkins’ count – against the winless Wolves.

“We’re trying to find a way to play 32 minutes,” Adkins

said. “We try to force a lot of things. We put ourselves in situations to attack, but our decision-making is not there.

It comes down to our decision-making, our foul situation, and turnovers, which gets back to decision making.

“We get in silly situations.”

Plainfield East (3-3, 1-0 in the Southwest Prairie) had built a comfortable lead on moderately sloppy play with 4:52 left in the second quarter when Adkins called time and let his players have it verbally. They were sharper for the rest of the half, but it’s clear the unit can be much better.

“The sky is the limit,” Jordan said. “When we play our best basketball, nobody can stop us. We’ve got to keep our heads on straight.”

If they do, the margin in games against teams such as Oswego East will be much larger.

The Bengals jumped to a 16-4 lead after a quarter and never looked back. Oswego East, hamstrung by poor ball handling even before Plainfield East threw the press on for a few minutes, had 14 turnovers and 12 points in the first half.

Meanwhile, Jordan was in charge. He had 16 points at the half, a résumé built on a trio of 3-pointers.

Robert Reed (15 points) and Elyjah Goss (11) also were in double figures for Plainfield East, which plays its first home game of the season Friday, when Minooka visits.

Marottas, defense lift Lincoln-Way West

By JEFF DEGRAW Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – For the second time in two weeks, unbeaten Lincoln-Way West defeated Lincoln-Way North, this time 47-29 on Tuesday night in a South West Suburban Red matchup.

The Warriors (5-0, 2-0), in front of a spirited home crowd, led at the end of the first quarter, 16-14. The Phoenix took a 20-19 lead with 6:47 to go before the half, and that was the last time the Warriors trailed.

West held North (1-5, 1-1)

to five field goals in the final three quarters and never really was threatened.

“It was a combination of our defense and North’s poor shooting,” West coach Brian Flaherty said. “We have a very good defense, and I thought we played well tonight. When you can hold a team to single-digit points in three different quarters, it’s a great effort. We rebounded well and really controlled their end of the court.”

The first half ended with West up, 25-20, as the Warrior defense held North scoreless the last 6:47 of the quarter.

Offensively, it was the Marotta show in the first half. Senior Anthony Marotta scored 13 points, and junior Jon Marotta scored the Warriors’ other 12 points.

North – opening the second-half scoring with its only field goal of the third quarter, at the 7:07 mark – to cut the lead to 25-22. West didn’t score until the three minutes remained in the quarter on a basket by Jon Marotta. He then stole the ball and made a pass to junior Cameron Gavin to give West a 29-23 lead.

the next possession, and senior Craig Majcher hit a shot at the end of the quarter to lead, 3325. West was 4 of 15 from the field but still outscored North, 8-5, in the quarter.

The West defense maintained the momentum and held North scoreless in the final quarter until only 1:45 remained. The Warriors outscored the Phoenix in the quarter, 14-4, to seal the win.

“We expected North to play zone, but we also thought they would mix it up more,” Flaherty said. “We were very patient, but at times were patient

to the point of hesitation.

“Cam [Gavin] came in and gave us a lift and managed the game well. Cam and Marco [Pettinato], our starting point guard, are lengthy, tough to pass around, and they do a great job for us on both ends of the floor.”

Jon Marotta led all scorers with 18 points. Anthony Marotta chipped in 13 and Majcher finished with eight.

Senior center Liam Jenkins had 13 for North before fouling out in the fourth quarter, and junior Corey Bartee scored eight.

Toews and Kane scored on the Blackhawks’ first two chances, and Chicago rallied late and earned its seventh

straight victory, 3-2 over the Devils on Tuesday night.

“They are top guys in the NHL,” Kinkaid said after his outstanding 37-save performance ended in a loss. “Obviously I was a little too far out on the Toews one, I wanted to get the leg out, and then Kane has a great set of hands. You never know what he is going to do.”

Kinkaid, who was called up from Albany earlier Tuesday with the Devils playing the second game of a back-to-back set.

SAN DIEGO – The Chicago White Sox are making the biggest moves at the winter meetings, trying to regain relevance in the AL Central after losing 188 games over two seasons.

Hours after reaching a $46 million, four-year deal with closer David Robertson, Chicago acquired starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija from the Oakland Athletics as part of a six-player trade.

“In our mind, we’re not finished yet,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Tuesday. “We still know we have some other areas we need to improve, and we’re hopeful that in the coming days – and if not the coming days, then the coming weeks – we’ll be able to fill a couple more voids in our roster.”

While Jon Lester’s talks on the free-agent market still seemed to be creating a logjam for other starting pitchers, the Chicago teams were busy in the trade mart.

In the day’s other significant swap, the Arizona Diamondbacks sent All-Star catcher Miguel Montero – who is owed $40 million over the next three seasons – to the Chicago Cubs for a pair of prospects.

Coming off consecutive playoff appearances that followed a 20-year drought, the Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to

went 5-6 with a 3.14 ERA for Oakland.

Samardzija, a right-hander who turns 30 on Jan. 23, made $5,345,000 this year and is eligible for salary arbitration. He can become a free agent after the 2015 season.

“We’re going to make every effort to make this a long-term relationship,” Hahn said. “We felt that this was a premium starter who fit – not just in terms of how he fit in our rotation but how he fit in our clubhouse.”

Samardzija wasn’t so sure he would want to miss free agency. “You’re so close to it, you really want to experience it,” he maintained. “But like I said before, when the situation’s right, it’s right. When the numbers are right, they’re right.”

Earlier in the offseason, Chicago agreed to a $25 million, two-year contract with first baseman Adam LaRoche and a $15 million, three-year deal with left-hander Zach Duke.

Samardzija joins a rotation that includes Chris Sale, who finished third in AL Cy Young Award voting, and Joel Quintana.

“It’s a gutsy move,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “You look around at our division, and you see the starting pitchers out there, of what it takes to make it in your division of facing them all the time, and we feel like that’s something we had to do.”

Both 5-8, but Falcons & Bears are worlds apart The drive from Green Bay to Chicago is pleasant enough – just about three hours and short enough to go nonstop – but long enough to let your mind wander to what might have been, or perhaps should be.

I was there Monday night for the Packers-Falcons game; and as I replayed it in my mind in the car, I was struck by the strange similarities and huge differences between the Falcons and the Bears.

Remember when they met in Week 6 and the Bears had their only quality 60-minute performance of the year, handing the Falcons a convincing 27-13 defeat?

That was when we still hoped the Bears were moving in the right direction.

Where are these two clubs at now?

Both teams have $100 million quarterbacks in Matt Ryan and Jay Cutler. One of the great debates to start this season was over which was the best pair of starting

Yet both groups have struggled mightily. Both defensive lines are populated with overpriced, underperforming veterans. Both teams have athletes rather than football players at linebacker, and the Falcons are a little better in the second-

Each is a 5-8 football team, although the Falcons are in first place in the woeful NFC South while the Bears are in the basement of the much-stronger NFC North.

When the Bears went to Lambeau in Week 9 of this season, they basically failed to show up. They fell behind, 14-0, in the first half, and then gave up 28 more points in a comical second quarter to trail, 42-0, at the half and left the Packers laughing at them on the sidelines.

Rather than come back and fight, the Bears mailed in the second half scoring only on a fluky 45-yard pass from Cutler to Marshall halfway through the third quarter, and a 101-yard kickoff return from Chris Williams in the fourth quarter after the Packers had made the score 55-7.

The Falcons struggled similarly to the Bears early

Monday night, falling behind, 31-7, at the half after Green Bay scored on every possession it had in the half.

But unlike the Bears, the Falcons chose to come out and fight in the second half, closing the score to 43-37 with 2:11 remaining and still in possession of all three timeouts. Atlanta was one defensive stop away from getting the ball back with about 1:50 to play and a chance to win the game.

The Bears would appear to be the more-talented team, although Ryan and Jones are clearly superior at this stage of their careers to Cutler and Marshall or Jeffery.

Yet in Lambeau, one team competed and one team didn’t; and the Falcons were so much better coached than the Bears, it’s beyond comparison.

Right now, the Falcons are a far superior 5-8 team than the Bears, and folks may not be laughing if they win a home playoff game. The club that showed up in the second half in Green Bay just might.

And the Bears appear to be resisting change. Why?

SOUTH BEND – For the past week and a half, Notre Dame coach Mike Brey has been urging sophomore guard Steve Vasturia to be more aggressive.

The message appears to have sunk in.

Vasturia scored a career-high 19 points Tuesday to lead No. 25 Notre Dame to a 93-67 win over Mount St. Mary’s. Vasturia was perfect shooting the ball, hitting 7 of 7 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and both his free throws.

“This was a process we started with him about 10 days ago, like, stop playing so safe, go for it a little bit,” Brey said. “We’ve created a monster.”

After scoring a sea son-high 12 against Michigan State last week, Vasturia has scored in double figures three straight games, while continuing to draw the defensive assignment against the foes’ top perimeter threat.

That was the Mountaineers’ Will Miller, who failed to score in the first half, and didn’t get the majority of his 12 points until late in the game with the Irish holding a big lead.

With Jerian Grant and Demetrius Jackson – bigger offensive threats – to focus on, leaving Vasturia free was part of the game plan for Mount St. Mary’s (2-5).

“We were going to let Vasturia try to beat us tonight,” Mountaineers’ coach Jamion Christian said. “And he did.”

Zach Auguste had 19 points and eight rebounds and Grant, Notre Dame’s leading scorer, hit his average of 19 points. Jackson finished with 15 points.

Back in the Top 25 for the first time in over a year, the Irish (9-1) used a 30-4 first half run to turn a four-point contest into a blowout before halftime.

Chris Martin hit 5-of-9 3-pointers and finished with 19 points for the Mountaineers.

Not much would go down in the second half for Mount St. Mary’s, which missed two tip-ins and followed with a failed dunk attempt by Byron Ashe on consecutive trips down the floor as the Mountaineers hit just 2 of 12 from the floor to open the second half. Filipinos in the Diocese of Joliet celebrate traditional novena, foods

By DAWN AULET Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – Simbang Gabi is part of the Filipino cultural celebration of Christmas.

Traditionally, the nineday celebration takes place at sunrise, with Mass and traditional foods, and is done early so fishermen can go out and begin work.

Here in the United States, the celebration looks a little different. Because there is no need to have Mass before the fishermen go to work, Mass is held at 7:30 p.m. instead of at dawn.

“It’s no longer dawn, but it’s still dark,” said Remy Dela Cruz, one of the coordinators. “The celebration, it has to be dark.”

That’s because the celebration has an aspect of light to it. This set of Masses over nine consecutive days (novena) during Advent is

meant to welcome the newborn Jesus (in the Bible, he calls himself “the light of the world”) and to honor Mary, Jesus’ mother.

Novenas usually are prayed at night; but in the Philippines, the custom is adjusted for the fishermen’s work schedule.

“It’s been a tradition in the Philippines for a long time, which we also inherited from the Spaniards,” Dela Cruz said. “We miss this kind of celebration.”

Dela Cruz came to the United States in 1971. About 25 years ago, she saw an ad in the St. Mary Immaculate Parish bulletin seeking individuals of Filipino descent to celebrate Simbang Gabi in the United States.

“I went to the meeting, and that was the beginning of my involvement,” Dela Cruz said.

On the ninth day, both clusters gather in one church. Last year, that final celebration was at St. Mary’s Parish in Plainfield, Della Cruz said. This year, it will be at Holy Spirit Catholic Community in Naperville.

“The reading are the readings of the day for that Mass,” Dela Cruz said. “But the difference is of the cultural nature of the Simbang Gabi that is diversified from the Philippines, the readings are translated to our dialect, Tagalog.”

Wanting to celebrate Filipino culture but not exclude those who do not speak the language, Dela Cruz said they use missalettes that translate the Mass. There also is music.

“The songs, there is a

choir that practices a lot, and they sing in Tagalog, and there is again a translation,” Dela Cruz said.

In the Philippines, families would gather after the Mass at home for traditional foods prepared by older relatives. In the United States, the food is cooked and shared at the church after Mass.

Foods include egg rolls, chicken and Pansit, a noodle dish. There is a tradition in the Philippines to feed people noodles on their birthday because noodles are believed to bring a long life. This particular noodle dish includes vegetables and meat. It is similar to Pad Thai.

“The Pansit really is sauteed,” Dela Cruz said. “We saute garlic, onion, oil and then we put chicken with it, shredded chicken or shredded pork. So they are small because once you cook the Pansit it will be small, not big pieces.”

Dela Cruz said 1,400 people attended last year at St. Mary’s. For Dela Cruz, celebrating Simbang Gabi as an adult in the United States brings back memories of her childhood in the Philippines.

“I remember I fall asleep during the Mass, and I kind of laugh at myself because it is too early,” Dela Cruz said. “We miss those times, especially the food.

One reason Dela Cruz helps perpetuate the tradition is for the children, so the next generation can enjoy this important part of Filipino cultural and religious heritage.

Simbang Gabi celebrations, she said, are run on donations.

“People should know that they should support the Simbang Gabi,” Dela Cruz said, “because if we do not have support from the parishioners, this culture will not be able to continue.”

In bridge, hand evaluation changes as an auction proceeds. Ask yourself two questions: How does my hand compare with what partner is expecting? How well does it fit with partner’s hand?

Dear Doctor K: I have osteoarthritis. It’s improved some with physical therapy and weight loss, but not entirely. Should I give “joint support” supplements a try? Which ones?

Dear Reader: Your question reminds me of two of my patients. “John” was a man in his 50s whose pain from arthritis in his knees made it hard for him to play pickup basketball. Physical therapy and pain medicines helped, but not completely.

“Helen” was a woman in her 60s who loved gardening. Arthritis in her knees caused pain every time she knelt to dig up or plant something. Conventional treatments helped a lot, but she still was in pain.

Many of my patients with osteoarthritis are like these two. They benefit from physical therapy, weight loss and medications to reduce pain and inflammation. But some, despite trying these treatments, still end up with pain, stiffness and limits on their day-to-day functioning. So I understand when they ask about joint support supplements.

Here are some of the more popular osteoarthritis supplements on the market and the evidence for – or against – giving them a try: • GLUCOSAMINE and CHONDROITIN. A major study of these supplements in The New England Journal of Medicine concluded that they may help relieve pain in people with moderate to severe osteoarthritis pain.

If you fall into this category, try the glucosamine-chondroitin combination for two to three months. If you find it eases your pain, it’s reasonable to keep using it.

If not, save your money.

• DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE (DMSO) and METHYL SULFONYL METHANE (MSM). The handful of clinical trials on these substances show that they are no better than a placebo (sugar pill) when it comes to pain reduction.

• S-ADENOSYLMETHIONINE (SAMe). A 2009 review looked at four clinical trials that compared SAMe

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff against a placebo. The difference between the supplement and sugar pill was small and possibly due to chance.

• BOSWELLIA SERRATA. In one review of this herbal remedy, people who took 100 milligrams (mg) of B. serrata daily for three months said their pain was moderately lower and their functioning slightly better, compared with those who took the placebo.

• AVOCADO SOYBEAN UNSAPONIFIABLES (ASU). Results from six studies of ASU, another herbal remedy, found that taking 300 mg daily for three to 12 months slightly improved pain and functioning.

I usually support my patients’ decisions to try glucosamine and chondroitin. But I warn them that just because a supplement is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe. And that supplements, like medications, can cause side effects such as stomach upset, nausea, skin rashes and allergic reactions.

More worrisome are potential drug interactions.

For example, glucosamine and chondroitin could interfere with the widely used blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin). Also, the FDA does not monitor the dose and purity of supplements, as it does for conventional drugs.

My patient “John” was on warfarin for an irregular heartbeat. Even though I monitored his dose, he had a bad nosebleed, stopped glucosamine and chondroitin and switched from basketball to swimming. “Helen” was luckier.

The same supplements nearly eliminated her knee pain and produced no adverse effects.

He always said he hated people who cheat on their spouse, but then he had an affair with a married co-worker, a woman who had three kids. We had a huge argument about it.

I called her names and he beat me up. I called the police, he was arrested, jailed, and I filed for divorce.

It has been six years and I have moved on, but I’m still angry over their cheating. They got married and invited mutual friends who knew of their affair.

Dear Abby: A few months ago, I turned 50 and my co-workers held a small celebration. When we celebrate birthdays, we all have agreed to regift an item (usually a gag gift).

One of my presents was a black leather miniskirt and matching vest. I never planned on wearing it, but my husband, “Tom,” and I were invited to an ’80s-themed Halloween party and I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a costume, so we decided to go as a rock star and his groupie.

I left work early to get ready for the party. When Tom arrived home, he couldn’t keep his eyes or hands off me.

We never made it to the party and had the best sex we’d had in years. Before that night, our love life had been practically nonexistent.
