Candidates in Will County file for March primary

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – State, county and other local candidates from Will County had a 5 p.m. Monday deadline to throw their hats in the ring for the March 15, 2016, primary election.

A full list is available on the Will County Clerk’s website, www.thewillcountyclerk.com.

County Board Districts 1, 4, 6 and 7 – which have two seats apiece – are up for two-year terms. County Board Districts 3, 8, 10, 12 and 13 have four-year term seats up for election. Members of the County Board also serve on the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Board

of Commissioners.

In any county board race where there is more than two candidates running for the nomination from the same party, a primary election will be held, with the top vote-getters in the primary going on to the November general election. It is possible for four people – two from each party – to be on the general election ballot for a county board race.

Food pantries, soup kitchens also looking for giving spirit this holiday season

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A bundled up Guillermina Hernandez shivered a bit Monday as she greeted Jefferson Street WalMart patrons with “Merry Christmas” and “Happy New Year,” but her smile never wavered.

The Joliet resident stood as a bell ringer for The Salvation Army in the 40-degree weather for about eight hours Monday.

“I like to help The Salvation Army, help the needy pay their bills,” Hernandez said.

“I keep going in cold weather.

I say I’m strong and I should keep helping and do my best.

Don’t give up.”

Guillermina is one of dozens of bell ringers employed

by The Salvation Army in Joliet. But the organization needs more volunteers to help cover the 51 locations in the area.

The Salvation Army Joliet Corps Community Center employs 35 bell ringers for the holiday season. But that doesn’t cover the 51 locations where the organization sets up its iconic red kettles.

“About 80 percent [of bell ringers] are employees,” The Salvation Army Capt. Daniel Faundez said. “If we had enough people to volunteer, it would contribute more to what we’re trying to do.”

Faundez said more volunteers means The Salvation Army could hire fewer paid bell ringers, which could hurt people who rely on the seasonal work but help the organization use more of the funds for its core purpose.

According to The Salvation Army’s website, the organization provides services such as food and clothing assistance, programs ranging from camping to art, women’s and youth ministries, and other religiously oriented activities.

“The challenge is we have the locations, but we have to be able to be there,” Faundez said. “If we can have at least 50 percent of bell ringers volunteer, we could really help our fundraising.”

Food pantries

Food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens have been classic ways for people to volunteer their time during the holidays. And Donna Larkin-Lake from the Northern

Illinois Food Bank said the need grows from the stress of the winter season.

“It exposes more people to the issue of hunger,” Larkin-Lake said. “People are thinking about how to pay heating bills and still save for food. The shorter days mean you can’t rely on daylight anymore. People are turning on their lights earlier.”

But Larkin-Lake also said more people are in the giving spirit during the holidays.

“Hunger is not a seasonal thing,” she said. “We need help year-round.”

Faundez said the interaction between a volunteer and a food assistance recipient can make the whole experience better for both.

“Volunteers can walk and do small talk, entering into

the lives of those getting assistance,” Faundez said about The Salvation Army’s food pantry. “Particularly during the holidays, it’s about bringing hope where there is none.”

Proposed Joliet budget includes tax hikes, deficit

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A proposed city of Joliet budget would raise property taxes, borrow money from reserves to cover a deficit, close a fire station, and not include enough money to pay for rusting police cars.

City Manager Jim Hock presented his proposed budget Monday to a City Council that immediately began to push back against the idea of raising property taxes.

“I don’t believe I would support a real estate tax increase with all these variables and unknowns out there,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk told Hock at the meeting.

The unknowns, however, could make the financial outlook worse.

The budget does not include pay increases, and the city is just beginning to negotiate with unions on contracts that expire at the end of this year.

Hock said the budget assumes that the city will continue receiving the same amount of money it has in past years from its local share of income taxes, casino taxes, fuel taxes and other revenue that he admits are jeopardized by the

for every $1,000. The higher tax would generate $1.1 million for the budget.

A 4.99 percent increase in the city share of the property tax will cost the owner of a $150,000 house an extra $29.64 a year. The city would get $1.6 million in additional revenue.

The Joliet Public Library also is seeking a 2 percent property tax hike.

The real estate transfer tax applied to sales of property would go from the current rate of $3 per $1,000 to $5 for every $1,000. The city would get an additional $1.1 million

Hock said even his proposed property tax hike could be made moot by Gov. Bruce Rauner, who wants to freeze local property taxes.

“If it happens this year, even if you do approve an increase, you may be locked out,” he said.

He said the only capital expenditures included in the budget are those that the city is obligated to pay because they were approved in previous years, including roof repairs at Union Station.

The budget includes the hiring of an economic development director and an inspector general, two initiatives sought

by O’Dekirk. To pay for the economic development director, the city would cut funds that go to the Will County Center for Economic Development and City Center Partnership.

She also said students in full-day kindergarten will have additional time to work further in-depth on academic activities.

One parent at the forum asked what kind of impact a mix of full-day and half-day students will have on first grade classrooms. Woolwine said every class can look differently and the district will have experienced teachers working with students.

Griffith said teachers al-

ready are experiencing working with students who come from other districts that offer full-day kindergarten.

Another parent at the forum asked what information they would receive on the breakdown of full-day kindergarten tuition costs, which is $100 a month. The registration fee for full-day and half-day kindergarten is $88.

Griffith said the main cost of the program was salary and benefits for staff. Other costs covered materials, supplies and transportation.

The next forum will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Aux Sable Middle School, 2001 Wildspring Parkway, Joliet.

Steve Wilhelmi will not seek re-election

JOLIET – After nearly 16 years on the Will County Board, longtime member Steve Wilhelmi has announced he won’t seek re-election next year, noting how an ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease – coupled with other factors – played into his decision.

Wilhelmi said Monday he wants to make it known that he’s “been battling with Parkinson’s disease for the last five years.”

But there are other reasons for his decision not to run again, he said. Business is

picking up at his Joliet-based financial consulting firm, Wilhelmi Financial.

“I’m having a harder time balancing everything,” he said.

Wilhelmi – a Democrat who represents District 10 – was Steve first elected to Wilhelmi the board in 1998 but gave up his seat four years later during an unsuccessful run for county treasurer in 2002. Soon after, the longtime business accountant was appointed to the County Board to replace the

late Dick Budde.

Wilhelmi, a certified accountant who is often heavily engaged in budget discussions and sits on the board’s Finance Committee, said he plans to keep in touch with county officials if anyone needs a second set of eyes on budget matters.

“I will miss that. But they have a really good budget staff there now,” Wilhelmi said.

With business at Wilhelmi Financial picking up, he likely would not be able to give as much time as he’d like to county matters moving forward, he said.

Two countywide incumbents very well could run unopposed in both the primary and the general election. No opponents filed for either party against Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil and Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

But things could get heated in the November races for county CEO, circuit clerk and a handful of county board races.

County Board District 1 garnered the highest number of total candidates, with five Democrats and two Republicans filing to run for the two-

seat district.

Four candidates filed petitions for the soon-to-be vacated position of Will County Circuit Clerk. Longtime clerk Pam McGuire announced in September she is not seeking a sixth term. Among those who filed are Democrats Andrea Lynn Chasteen, Bob Enright and Barbara Guerrero and Republican Marlene M. Carlson.

Laurie McPhillips, a Republican and former county employee, filed Monday to challenge Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., a Democrat seeking a fourth term as the county’s CEO. It’s anyone’s race for Will County Board District 10 with incumbent Democrats Steve Wilhelmi and Joe Babich both

announcing they won’t seek another term. Republican Timothy Broderick and Democrats Joe Carlasare and Tyler Marcum filed intent to run for the district.

In instances in which more than one candidate from the same party files for the same office Nov. 23, the first day of filing, a lottery will be held to determine who is first on the ballot.

Candidates who did not file Nov. 23 but turned in petitions before Monday’s deadline will qualify for a lottery drawing to find out who gets the last spot on the ballot – another favorable spot to have.

The lottery will be held 9 a.m. Dec. 8 at the Will County Clerk’s Office.

Durbin’s founding family disappointed with handling of shuttered Plainfield franchise

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – All that remains of a once-popular bar and restaurant on Route 30 in Plainfield are boarded up windows and an iconic three-leaf clover.

The Plainfield franchise of Durbin’s, a pizza chain with eight locations in Chicago’s south suburbs, closed in September, owner Ed Schmidt said Friday.

“We’re working on [future plans for the building] right now,” Schmidt said of the 16031 S. Lincoln Highway location, declining to comment on why the restaurant closed.

However, a member of the chain’s founding family, the McAuliffes, said the closure may have resulted from the franchise straying from the recipes and standards of the chain.

Tom McAuliffe opened Durbin’s in Plainfield in August 2012. He sold the location in October 2013 with a licensing agreement to Schmidt, allowing Schmidt to continue the restau-

rant and bar as a franchise.

“I want to apologize to the people in the Plainfield and Joliet areas,” McAuliffe said. “We had a fantastic family-owned product.”

McAuliffe said after the sale, Schmidt reneged on a licensing agreement that outlined how Durbin’s should be maintained.

“We had a licensing agreement with a gentleman’s understanding to do a good job, but it turned out to be a catastrophe,” McAuliffe said. “[Schmidt] wouldn’t follow it.”

Schmidt declined to comment on McAuliffe’s allegations.

McAuliffe declined to go into details, citing a pending lawsuit with Schmidt. But he said he was disappointed with the outcome of the franchise, noting it was the only location that has ever failed.

“More than a year in and we were doing very good business,” he said. “It’s a shame Durbin’s name was involved with this.”

JOLIET – Pilot Flying J on Sunday opened a Pilot Travel Center in Joliet.

The travel center features amenities for area residents and the traveling public, while adding 70 local jobs and other economic benefits to the community, according to a news release from the company.

“We’re thrilled that our new travel center will serve the Joliet community, as well as contribute to the local economy,” Pilot Flying J CEO Jimmy Haslam said in the release.

“We hope local residents and those traveling through the Will County area and along Interstate 80 and U.S Highway 53 will enjoy the convenience and amenities of our new Pilot Travel Center.”

JOLIET – A Lockport man told a judge Monday he wasn’t trying three years ago to run down Joliet police officers with his car.

“I know for a fact I did not try to hit or hurt anyone,” James A. Pacheco, 39, told Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes during his sentencing hearing Monday at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet.

“But I know I was wrong.”

On July 30, 2012, Pacheco was spotted breaking the windows of his former landlord’s house in the 300 block of Union Street in Joliet and driving away.

The homeowners called police, and Officers Adam Stapleton and Eric Zettergren followed Pacheco’s car to the 900 block of Washington Street, where it was stopped

CHICAGO – Federal authorities said an online threat that led the University of Chicago to cancel classes Monday targeted whites and was motivated by the police shooting of a black teenager, video of which was released last week and sparked protests.

Jabari R. Dean, 21, of Chicago, threatened to kill 16 white male students or staff at the school on Chicago’s South Side, according to the criminal complaint.

Dean, who is black, was arrested Monday morning. He did not enter a plea later in the day on a charge of transmitting a threat in interstate commerce in court.

Dean is a freshJason Van man studying Dyke electrical engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and wore a red sweat shirt emblazoned with the name of that school at the hearing.

The threat was posted Saturday, just days after the city released a video of Officer Jason Van Dyke, who is white, shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who was black, 16 times.

Van Dyke is charged with first-degree murder, and his bond was set for $1.5 million Monday. Van Dyke later posted the $150,000 necessary for his release.

Authorities said Dean posted online from a phone that he would “execute approximately ... 16 white male students and or staff, which is the same number of time (sic) McDonald was killed” and “will die killing any number of white policemen that I can in the process.”

The criminal complaint, released by the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago, said someone tipped the FBI on Sunday to a threat that was posted on a social media website. The FBI was unable to find the threat online, and was provided a screenshot by the person who reported the threat.

That led them to Dean, who admitted to FBI agents that he posted the threat and took it down shortly after posting it,

shootings have happened in Arizona and Tennessee.

Students closed their books, shut down their laptops and hurried home Sunday when the school first alerted people to the threat, according to student body president Tyler Kissinger.

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Nervous mayors and county officials are piping up about the Illinois budget crisis, with one city even threatening to turn off the lights at a state garage because of an unpaid electric bill.

New Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly are embroiled in a fiscal standoff. As the state enters its sixth month without a budget, local governments are becoming more vocal with their concerns that Springfield isn’t passing along the tax revenues it collects for such things as road improvements and emergen-

cy dispatch – or paying bills for power or water.

At least three counties have sued over emergency-service tax disbursements, and the board that governs the village of Mundelein, a suburb 40 miles northwest of Chicago, formally asked the state to release an amount that soon will approach $1 million.

“We wanted to at least send a message that it’s not lost on us that they’re holding our money,” Mayor Steve Lentz said. “They have to get off the dime. The trustees and I feel it’s not a partisan thing – we need both parties to come together to resolve this and fix our state.”

“That building has always been a challenge,” Plainfield Village Planner Michael Garrigan said.

Before Durbin’s, the building featured Pom Poms All American Bar and Grill and Valentino’s, Garrigan said. But both businesses closed.

The building rests on the Route 30 corridor, designated

Springfield’s city-owned utility reports the state owes $3.5 million since July for electric and water just for the Statehouse and other buildings on the downtown Capitol campus. Mayor Jim Langfelder said pulling the cord isn’t an option with government’s massive presence in the capital city, but he is preparing a request that utility bills move toward the top of the list when the comptroller pays bills.

Rauner understands the frustrations in the town halls and county board rooms, spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said.

World leaders gather to try to save Earth from overheating

By KARL RITTER and SYLVIE CORBET The Associated Press LE BOURGET, France – With dramatic vows to save future generations from an overheated planet, the largest gathering ever of world leaders began two weeks of talks Monday aimed at producing the most far-reaching pact yet to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and avert environmental havoc.

“We should ask what will we say to our grandchildren if we fail,” British Prime Minister David Cameron said as the U.N. climate summit opened under heavy security on the outskirts of Paris, two weeks after the extremist attacks that left 130 people dead. “Instead of making excuses tomorrow, let’s take action today.”

Even before the gathering, more than 180 countries pledged to cut or curb their emissions, but scientific analyses show that much bigger reductions would be needed to limit man-made

warming of the Earth to 3.8 degrees Fahrenheit over pre-industrial times, the internationally agreed-upon goal.

The biggest issue facing the 151 heads of state and government at the summit is who should bear most of the burden of closing that gap: wealthy Western nations that have polluted the most historically, or developing countries like China and India that are now the biggest and third-biggest emitters of greenhouse gases?

“Addressing climate change should not deny the legitimate needs of developing countries to reduce poverty and improve living standards,” Chinese leader Xi Jinping told the conference.

The last major climate agreement, the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, required only rich countries to cut emissions, and the U.S. never signed on.

Since then, global temperatures and sea levels have continued to rise, and the Earth has seen an extraordinary run of extreme weather, in-

cluding severe droughts and storms.

This new round of talks seeks to produce an agreement that would require all countries, rich and poor, to take action.

While the specifics have yet to be worked out, the pact is meant to chart a path toward reduced reliance on coal, oil and gas and expanded use of renewable energy such as wind and solar power.

The negotiations will focus on whether emissions targets should be binding or voluntary and how to verify that countries are hitting their targets. Another big issue will be how to provide the finance and technology that developing countries will need to reduce their emissions and cope with the effects of rising seas, intensifying heat waves and floods.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Students suffer because of budget problems

To the Editor: Our country and state are growing broke. We all know many reasons why.

One reason is we are trying to cure the problems of the world.

Another problem, which I deeply regret to say, is the bilingual program.

I was informed by the education office in Washington that the cost of bilingual education for all states was $763 million in 2014; Illinois received $24 million.

Our language is English. Our country cannot survive with two languages, as our businesses – especially hospitals – print information in two languages.

Why learn English when even TV ads are spoken in two languages?

Our own children are suffering in edu-

cation because our schools are having budget problems.

If our politicians would be more careful in spending our tax dollars, maybe we could afford bilingual education.

We as taxpayers budget our family income, spending only what we can afford. Our government should do the same. I’m sure our veterans could manage our government much better. Some of our politicians are doing a great job in trying to stay within our budget; they need our help badly.

We should be able to “vote” when our government is willing to spend more than $1 billion on new programs, and know about these programs before they are put in service.

Failure at every level for Chicago teen shot by cop Here’s what the Chicago Police Department told the media after LaQuan McDonald was killed by a police officer 13 months ago: A drug-addled black kid lunged at a cop with a knife and was then shot in the chest.

Six months later, and a week after Chicago’s mayoral election, the City Council rushed through approval of a $5 million settlement with McDonald’s family, even though no lawsuit had been filed.

Seven months after that, the city finally released the dashboard video from a Chicago police car that clearly showed McDonald walking away from the police when he was shot 16 times – and almost all of those shots were fired as he lay bleeding to death on the pavement.

In addition to the officer who shot him, everybody failed that kid, from his own mother, who lost custody of LaQuan after her boyfriend savagely beat him; to the state’s Department of Children and Family Services, which was supposed to protect

him and help him as its legal ward; to the city’s mayor, who covered up the gruesome manner of McDonald’s death by fighting the release of the dashboard video; to the city council for not demanding answers before approving such a huge settlement; to the mainstream media for not following up on their denied Freedom of Information Act requests with a lawsuit; to the Cook County state’s attorney for her all-too-usual slow-walking of investigations of alleged police misconduct; to the Illinois attorney general, who waited until the day before a judge finally acted to claim that the city had violated the state’s Freedom of Information Act by sitting on the video.

Other states take much better care of their young wards.

Yes, that can be expensive; but if caring for the kids nobody else wants isn’t one of the state’s most important responsibilities, I don’t know what the heck is. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, LaQuan was sexually molested in two different foster homes that

VIEWS Rich Miller were chosen, vetted and paid for by the state. Two. If that doesn’t boggle your mind and enrage your very soul, then nothing will.

Other states release their police dashboard and body cam videos much, much more quickly than Illinois. While that may lead to some unrest in the streets, it’s infinitely more democratic and honest than our far-too-encumbered, lumbering process, which overwhelmingly favors the political interests of those who run things.

Citizens can’t hold politicians accountable if they are deliberately kept in the dark, so Chicagoans deserved the right to know about McDonald’s death before they voted last spring.

And most other states license their police officers.

According to a November article in “The Police Chief”

magazine, 44 states license police officers and have a statewide process for revoking those licenses.

Illinois does neither, but it’s not for lack of trying.

Earlier this year, when the General Assembly was debating law enforcement reforms, police licensure was a hot topic. But, according to its chief sponsor, Sen. Kwame Raoul, D-Chicago, the idea was derailed by the House Republicans. The proposal was dropped in order to achieve a bipartisan victory on some much-needed reforms such as body cams and police training.

Cops have an almost impossible job, particularly in Chicago. Between Jan. 1 and Nov. 23, there have been 2,712 Chicago shooting victims, according to the Chicago Tribune. I wouldn’t want to be a Chicago cop for any amount of money.

The number of fatal shootings by police (70 in five years) pales in comparison to the total of all shootings. For most, our first instinct is to back the police. It’s a natural reaction.

They’re our protectors, so we want to believe they are just and good people, and most definitely are.

But more citizens, particularly in high-crime areas, have more contact with the police than they do with any other government employees. And, of course, the cops carry guns and are allowed to use them.

In Chicago, official discipline of bad cops is so rare as to be almost nonexistent, according to some recent studies. It’s a problem that screams for a remedy from above.

We need to do a better job as a state. The nightmare at DCFS needs to be addressed before the government makes more kids’ lives even worse.

Our Freedom of Information Act should no longer be a freedom-from-information law.

And, we as a state, should revisit the police licensing issue – since Chicago apparently can’t seem to take care of this very real problem on its own.

Tiger Classic and finished 2-2 after an 0-2 start. All-tournament selection Kevin Krieger averaged 27 points with a high of 35. The 6-foot-6 Krieger scores from inside and outside, takes the ball to the basket with authority, doesn’t mind dunking here and there, plays good defense, can block shots and rebounds.

In other words, we can expect him to be in the picture when we begin assessing player of the year candidates in the Joliet area.

“I think Kevin is mid-major D-I,” North coach Bob Krahulik said after Krieger dropped 35 on Thornridge.

“He’s not getting the looks he should be getting yet.”

North figures to be a factor in the Southwest Prairie.

Especially with center Kyle Speas out for a while longer with an injury suffered in football, more inexperienced Tigers are having to step up.

And already, they are beginning to do that. One thing that is evident: North will play an uptempo-yet-unselfish game.

“This team almost always makes the extra pass, almost to a fault,” Krahulik said.

At the WJOL tournament, Joliet Central (3-1) claimed

“I just told our guys that it pays dividends to play teams of this caliber early in the season,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said, complimenting the Steelmen on their defensive ability and how well they took care of the ball against the Indians, committing only six turnovers.

junior forward Devonte Pitchford missing the tournament with grade issues, Central needed contributions from multiple sources. Besides tournament MVP Jose Grubbs and Malik Fuller, Jomarre McNair and Cam Blackmon were among those stepping up.

“I couldn’t be happier with Cam’s progress,” Jeff Corcoran said of Blackmon.

The coach also cited assistant coach Brian Koehne’s contributions.

“We got stronger on de-

fense the four games here, and that’s on Brian,” he said. “He is doing a fantastic job. He also was here scouting earlier in the tournament, and his game plan for Minooka was spot on.”

As for facing Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday, Corcoran said, “Getting ready for H-F, that’s going to be a process.”

Also at the WJOL tournament, Lockport came off as deep but without a huge star.

Coach Brett Hespell may have a situation where he digs into his reserve strength all season long, perhaps changing his starting lineup at times.

However, as long as the Porters continue to bring the energy Hespell expects, regardless of who is on the floor at a given time, they cannot be taken lightly.

A final thought: Kudos to Lincoln-Way Central on winning the Lincoln-Way round-robin. Perhaps the Knights’ arrow also is pointing upward.

All in all, good things are on the horizon for the Joliet area.

From a rousing beginning in Thanksgiving tournaments, the boys basketball season in the Joliet area will keep the momentum going as the regular season gets under way this week.

For an interesting nonconference game, you have Lockport at Plainfield North at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Then, on Friday night – when conference wars begin – Bolingbrook will be at Joliet West, Homewood-Flossmoor at Joliet Central and Plainfield North at Minooka.

All those games also will tip off at 6:30.

There are many other games on the local schedule, of course; but based on what we saw last week, those four are headliners.

Joliet West (4-0), for example, won the Joliet West Tiger Thanksgiving Classic with a 79-77 overtime victory over Crete-Monee in the title game as Darien Bosby hit the game-winning shot. As coach Nick DiForti noted, the Tigers have several potential scorers who will play quality minutes, and Bosby is one of them.

In fact, West scored 94 points in one game and was in the upper 70s in two others in the tournament. Junior Trevian Bell is among this area’s best all-around talents.

And yet, a key factor that could make this a very good season for the Tigers is how hard they are getting after it defensively.

Bolingbrook (2-2) is coming off a third-place finish in the Class 4A State Tournament.

The Raiders opened last week in Decatur Team Soy Turkey Tournament. They reached the third-place game, where they fell to Decatur Eisenhower, 55-54. Zach Grady made a free throw with 9 seconds left to put Bolingbrook ahead, 54-53, but Eisenhower scored on a loose-ball putback at the buzzer to win it.

Bolingbrook visits West on Friday. If you enjoy high school basketball, you won’t want to miss that one.

St. Francis stages big rally to beat Mount Mercy AREA SCHEDULE

SUBMITTED REPORTS CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Jens Kennedy hit the winning basket with 13 seconds left as No. 11-ranked St. Francis men’s basketball team overcame a 17-point second-half deficit en route to a 94-92 victory Sunday evening over No. 15 Mount Mercy in nonconference play.

With its second win of the season over a nationally ranked opponent, USF improved to 6-0 overall, while Mount Mercy fell to 5-2.

Trailing, 65-48, with 17:01 remaining in the game, USF launched a 10-2 run to trim the gap to single digits (67-58) at the 15:12 mark and still trailed, 78-67, with 10:30 to go.

The Saints chipped away at the deficit over the next eight minutes before senior Edvinas Presniakovas buried a 3-point shot to put USF on top, 89-86, with 2:20 left to play. With 13 seconds remaining, Mount Mercy missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer, and USF won its eighth consecutive regular-season game dating back to last season.

Kennedy finished with 27 points, while senior Ilya Ilyayev led all scorers with 28 points. Landus Anderson added 13 points for his first career double-digit performance.

Kennedy and Logan Timmons each collected seven rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Strus recognized: The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday that Lewis University sophomore forward Max Strus has been selected as the GLVC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 29.

He is the first Flyer to be recognized by the league since Dennis Thomas Jr. won the award Feb. 14, 2011.

Strus averaged 38 points and 13 rebounds a game, while shooting 66.7 percent (14-for21) from 3-point range and 61.3 percent (19-for-31) overall from the field in a pair of regional victories last week.

His most impressive performance was a school-record 52 points on 14 for 18 shooting, including 12 for 14 from beyond the arc, in a 99-95 regional

The 52 points and 12 3-pointers are the most recorded by any NCAA player this season.

Based on available records, Strus’ 12 3-pointers are the most trifectas by a Flyer dating back to 1996-97.

The Hickory Hills native and Stagg graduate followed that effort with a double-double of 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in a 6260 win Saturday over Wayne State.

Strus also has recorded three consecutive double-doubles, which has not been done by a Flyer since 2007-08. He is averaging a GLVC-best 27.4 points and 9.8 rebounds a game.

Gasol’s double-double lifts Bulls over Spurs

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Pau Gasol had 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, and the Bulls snapped San Antonio’s five-game winning streak with a 92-89 win Monday night over the Spurs.

Jimmy Butler scored 14 points and reserve Doug McDermott had 12 for the Bulls in the opener of a four-game homestand. Joakim Noah contributed eight points, seven assists and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.

Gasol blocked LaMarcus Aldridge on a drive with 1:06 left, and then hit one of two foul shots on the other end for a 90-89 lead. After Manu Ginobili missed for San Antonio, Butler hit two free throws with 10.6 seconds left.

The Spurs had one last chance, but Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker each missed 3-point attempts in the final seconds. Parker’s try was partially blocked by Derrick Rose, who finished with 11 points and six assists.

Leonard had 25 points and eight rebounds for San Antonio, which had won nine of

AILING DUNLEAVY

Bulls forward Mike Dunleavy Jr. is planning to see two specialists this week after a setback in his recovery from offseason back surgery.

Coach Fred Hoiberg said Dunleavy is going to stop his on-court work and focus on rehabbing the injury for about two weeks.

The 35-year-old Dunleavy had lower back surgery on Sept. 25 and was expected to be out eight to 10 weeks.

He re-signed with the Bulls in July after he averaged 9.4 points and shot 40.7 percent from 3-point range in 63 games last season.

LAKE FOREST – The Bears are entering new territory this week – they’re favorites, and in the hunt for an NFC wild-card spot with five games to go.

John Fox’s bunch returned from a weekend off after its biggest win of the season Thanksgiving night for a practice Monday at Halas Hall, six days before hosting the 3-8 49ers, who are 0-5 on the road this season.

“Just keeping focus on being the same guy, not looking at the scoreboard whether in the course of the game, or whether you won last week or lost last week, just preparing,” Fox said about avoiding any overconfidence. “We have a slogan in there, ‘You fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.’ ” Fox acknowledged the desire to play in relevant games down the stretch but cautioned about looking ahead by his players.

“I think the whole thing is having meaningful or relevant games. You want to put yourself in that position, but you definitely want to keep the focus small,” he said. “All our focus right now is on the San Francisco 49ers.”

Tracy Porter said the attitude is slightly different after Thursday’s win, knowing the playoffs are more than just a pipe dream at this point.

“It’s a little bit different knowing that we’re coming off a big victory in a short week.

We’ve never said we’re out of the playoff hunt, but we kind of put it on the back burner because we want to take things one step at a time,” he said.

“We don’t want to look too far down the road because then we can overlook an opponent, and then they come in – and that’s how you get beat by an inferior team.

“We just want to take each game to heart like it’s a playoff game, and at the same time we never put playoffs out of

knack in his career for making interceptions at clutch times, certainly none more important than his pick-six in Super Bowl XLIV. Against the Packers, Porter had a fourth-quarter interception and another pass defensed on third-and-goal. How much of it is luck?

“Luck maybe comes around once or twice, but if it starts to happen repetitively, you just say you have a knack for it,” he said. “I kind of have a pretty good feel for the game, I know what’s going to happen in certain situations – I have a feel for it. I’m not going to say I know what’s going to happen; although it may look like that, I don’t know what’s going to happen. I just have a good feel for it, reading my keys, trusting my abilities and trusting

Injury update: There was no injury report, but Antrel Rolle, Eddie Royal and Ka’Deem Carey were not at practice. Martellus Bennett, who missed Thursday’s game, was participating in the portion open to the media.

No longer perfect, Patriots look to clinch top playoff spot

By JIMMY GOLEN The Associated Press FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – At least New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick doesn’t have to answer – or, more precisely, not answer – questions about an undefeated season anymore.

The Patriots’ quest for a second perfect regular season came to an end Sunday night with a 30-24 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos. What’s worse, tight end Rob Gronkowski was injured late in the game, putting a scare into a team that already had lost many of Tom Brady’s offensive weapons.

“He is the best tight end in football,” Brady said. “It is so

hard to see these guys get hurt this way.”

Gronkowski joins a list of injured that already included running back Dion Lewis, receivers Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, and a slew of offensive linemen. So instead of thinking about 16-0, the Patriots can worry about playoff position.

The Patriots lead the AFC East by four games with five to play, and they could clinch their 12th division title in 13 seasons as early as Sunday.

They have a one-game lead over Cincinnati and Denver for home-field advantage through the playoffs, but the Broncos now hold the tiebreaker.

the most productive tight ends in NFL history – when he’s on the field. He was knocked out with season-ending injuries in back-to-back seasons in 2012 and 2013, and Sunday night’s hit appeared as if it could do so again.

Gronkowski remained on the turf, writhing in pain, after taking a hit on the right knee from Denver defensive back Darian Stewart with 2:49 left in regulation. The big tight end needed help to get to a cart, which carried him off the field.

But after the game, he was seen walking with only a slight limp. Asked Monday if the news was encouraging, Belichick declined to give details.

5-7 bowl teams to be selected Teams with 5-7 records will become eligible for at least two bowl bids, and as many as five, based on their Academic Progress Rates.

The NCAA Division I council approved a recommendation made Monday by the football oversight committee to fill the record 40 bowls with five-win teams because not enough will meet the standard bowl-eligibility requirements.

There are 75 teams with at least six victories and a .500 record going into the final weekend of the regular sea-

son. Only three more can get to six wins.

Based on 2013-14, Nebraska has the best APR among 5-7 teams at 985.

Zapping superbugs with technology Edward Hospital facilities in Plainfield, Naperville kill germs with Xenex robot

Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – Imagine bright flashing lights catching your eye while you’re walking down a hospital hallway.

You look through an interior window and see the source of the unusual strobe. It’s a robot.

It’s not an anthropomorphic robot with arms and legs and a definable head. It’s more like R2-D2 from “Star Wars,” with a little blue mound of a head that has risen up to expose technology that flashes germ-killing rays across the room.

The robot is being used at Edward Hospital Emergency Department and Edward Hospital Outpatient Center, both in Plainfield, and at the hospital’s main campus in Naperville.

The brand name is Xenex, but staff at the Plainfield facilities have nicknamed their robot POW. The three used at the Naperville center are called Snap, Crackle and Pop. “When it runs,” Edward Hospital infection control manager Mary Anderson said, “it flashes the light around the room. It’s eye-catching. People notice it. ... Our clinical staff just loves it.”

The robots are a recent addition to the hospital’s germ-fighting arsenal.

Housekeeping continues to clean as normal – getting rid of trash and other visible dirt and liquids, then disinfecting surfaces with hospital-grade disinfectants registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. Linens are taken out of the room to disinfect.

Then, housekeeping brings in the robot for additional, state-of-the-art disinfection.

And that’s important, Anderson said, with today’s environment of superbugs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of every 25

U.S. hospital inpatients will contract a hospital-acquired infection; and of those, one in nine will die. HAIs are one of the leading causes of death in the country, and superbugs are one of the reasons.

The most common HAIs in acute care hospitals as of 2011, the CDC reported, result in pneumonia, gastrointestinal illness, urinary tract infections, primary bloodstream infections and surgical site infections, among other conditions.

Bacteria gleaned to survive the gamut of antibiotics common in health care environments are the scourge of health care providers today and include methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci.

It also kills other bacteria, viruses, mold, fungi and spores on surfaces and in the air, including the microorganisms that cause Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

The robot works by flashing high-intensity, full-spectrum germicidal ultraviolet light, according to the Xenex website. It kills microorganisms in four ways – by pulling water molecules into DNA, thus preventing transcription; by photo-splitting the strands of DNA apart; by fusing DNA bases together improperly; and by photo cross-linking to cause cell wall damage.

Anderson, who has a microbiology background, said the robot works on RNA

in similar fashions, for the microorganisms that do not have DNA. “I think they’re terrific,” Anderson said of the robots.

“They’ve been very well-received by our housekeeping staff and our clinical staff. ... It’s an added measure of safety – a reassurance to our patients and staff that Edward Hospital is committed to providing a safe environment for everyone.”

Anderson said ultraviolet disinfection technology has been used in other industries for a while now, and it’s something hospital staff have been keeping their eyes on, waiting for a system they considered usable and practical in a clinical setting.

The robot at the hospital’s Plainfield cancer center and procedural areas is used at night, when the large rooms are empty. Patient rooms, including those in the emer-

gency department, can be disinfected during the day, with the doors closed. The UV light can harm the eyes unless viewed through glass.

The Xenex robot sits in one place to complete each 10- or 15-minute cycle. Staff may put it in two locations in one room for maximum disinfection.

Anderson said the hospital does not have statistics yet on whether incidences of infections have been lowered by the devices, as the robots have been in use only about a year.

But the Xenex website reported that other institutions studied have greatly reduced infection rates.

The devices are not cheap, and the personnel costs are a bit more to put them into use, but Anderson said it’s worth it.

“Anything we can do to prevent infections is worth the cost and the extra time,” she said.

30, 2017.

Dr. Corinne Nawrocki, family medicine physician, will serve as chief of staff for Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Nawrocki is the first female to serve in this key medical staff leadership position in Silver C r o s s ’ s 1 2 0 - Dr. Corinne Nawrocki year history.

Over the next two years, Nawrocki will represent the Silver Cross medical staff – now more than 800 members strong.

Nawrocki earned her bachelor of science and a master’s in business administration from Benedictine University in Lisle. She attended medical school at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University in Downers Grove.

She completed both her family practice internship and residency at Olympia Fields Chicago Osteopathic Hospital.

Board certified by the American Board of Family Practice, she is a founding partner with C & R Medical Group in New Lenox.

Nawrocki is a preceptor at Midwestern University. Over the years, she has served on several Silver Cross Hospital committees including utilization, bundled care, physician service improvement, credentials and improving operational performance.

As chief of staff, she serves on the Silver Hospital Board of Directors and its quality and cost effectiveness and finance committees. She champions for the hospital’s I Matter program, which rewards women for getting their annual breast

and heart screenings.

PLAINFIELD – John F. Kennedy Middle School once again was the third highest fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for 2014-15. JFK has been ranked third in fundraising for about three years, seventh-grade math teacher Lisa Ballard said.

The school raised $67,979 for the Memphis, Tennessee, hospital through the Math-A-Thon fundraiser, in which students solve math problems for pledges. More than 7,000 schools participated in the program last year.

While the school hasn’t broken into the Top 2 on the St. Jude list – yet – it has routinely shattered its fundraising goal of $25,000 each year. JFK has raised more than $271,000 since starting the program in 2007, Ballard said.

Make the bid that fits the hand

Bridge writers can be predictable, but some use the chameleon system of bidding. They make the bid that fits the hand they have, not what their convention card says. For example, in today’s deal, what should North rebid with his hand?

One writer said that he must bid two diamonds, fourth suit game-forcing, because a three-heart rebid would be only game-invitational. He sarcastically called it modern bidding.

But what would he have done with ace-doubleton of spades and six hearts to the king-queen-jack? No doubt he would have recommended a game-invitational three hearts!

The advantage of two diamonds is that you hear another bid from partner (here, three clubs, to show the long suit) before continuing with three hearts.

Over the writer’s forcing threeheart rebid, South might well bid three no-trump, which North would probably pass. Then they would miss a makable seven-club contract.

After fourth-suit-forcing, the auction over three hearts would probably continue three no-trump – four clubs – four diamonds (control-bid) – four hearts (control-bid) – Blackwood – six or seven clubs. Admittedly, in seven clubs, South must guess the play. With this layout, he must establish dummy’s heart suit. You can work out the play.

The key point is that with strain and level uncertain, keep the early bidding as low as possible.

Another challenge: Most diseases are caused by defects in multiple genes, not just one, as in sickle cell anemia.

However, the technique already has been modified to edit multiple genes simultaneously.

The CRISPR technology has the potential to affect our lives beyond curing diseases. Experiments are underway to see if it can reduce the number of disease-carrying insects, or to grow hardier crops.

Any powerful new technology can, as you say, also be scary. A panel of distinguished scientists recently urged the world’s scientific community to refrain from using CRISPR to edit genes in human eggs or sperm until more is known about whether there may be potentially harmful results.

There are two lessons in the story of CRISPR. First, we humans are smart enough to make breakthroughs like CRISPR, but not smart enough to know from where those breakthroughs will come.

CRISPR was discovered by scientists pursuing an arcane question: how bacteria defend themselves from viruses. The scientists were not trying to invent a technique for editing human genes.

The second lesson: It is wise for society to invest in curious people who try to understand how living things work. That’s what leads to breakthroughs.

Dear Reader: Your son probably is talking about a technique called CRISPR. This technique already is having a great impact on biological research, and it may someday help cure some human diseases.

Many diseases are caused by defects in how genes are built. This, in turn, can cause a defect in how the protein made by the gene is built. A good example is the first disease in which a genetic defect was identified: sickle cell anemia. The disease brings terrible pain and damages organs.

It can even cause strokes to occur in children.

Without treatment, it can be fatal.

In sickle cell anemia, the defect is in the gene that makes a protein called globin. Globin is inside red blood cells and carries oxygen to all parts of the body. The CRISPR technique allows a scientist to find that defect in the gene and correct it.

So will CRISPR cure sickle cell anemia? Maybe. But it won’t be simple.

Editing genes in cells in a laboratory dish is one thing.

It’s quite another matter to edit genes in the cells of a living animal or human. Diseases typically affect certain cells in certain organs. So, to correct those diseases requires targeting just those genes, in just those cells and organs, deep within the body. That is a real challenge.

Nevertheless, some success already is being reported in editing genes inside living animals. For example, the technique was recently used to edit a gene in a mouse’s liver that affects the level of cholesterol in the
