Marley Community Church The origins of the Baptist Church in Marley can be traced to a Baptist missionary named Allen B. Freeman, who helped organize the O’Plain Baptist Church in 1833, in what is now south-central Homer Township. The church began in the cabin of pioneer settler Abram Snapp and family.

In 1850, a small white frame church was built at the village of Hadley, and the church was renamed “The Hadley Baptist Church.” As the thriving village of Marley began to grow, ground was broken in the winter 1899 for a new church east of town on Maple Street. Limestone was hauled from a nearby Joliet quarry for the church foundation, and the cornerstone was laid May 25, 1900.

The completed church, shown in the then photograph, was dedicated on Jan. 6, 1901. In 1914, the name was changed to “The Marley Baptist Community Church,” in an effort to welcome other Christians from other denominations. A few years later, the word Baptist was dropped from the name. In the early 1920s, the steeple was removed from the bell tower when it was found to be in bad condition and decorative railing was added atop the truncated tower. By 1983, a fund was set up by the church to restore the steeple, which was subsequently rebuilt.

In 1954, the John Storm farmstead, south of Maple Street was sold, and a portion of the land was subdivided for residential development. A portion of this land was bought by Agnes Haley for conversion to a park for the Marley Church in the memory of her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Haley.

Additional land also was donated by Mrs. Robert Regan, who owned the Storm farm. The park, just west of the church, was dedicated on July 4, 1955. Known as the Marley Community Church today, the church continues to serve the community and its residents.

Hundreds wearing red suits run through Joliet in fundraiser

OLIET – Most races start with “Ready, get set, go.”

For the participants in Saturday morning’s run through downtown it was “Ho. Ho. Ho. Go Santas!”

Over 400 runners and walkers dressed as Old St. Nick for the second annual Santa Run and Santa Stroll, a fundraiser for the Joliet Township High School Alumni Association. Everyone who participates is required to wear the white beards, red hats, jackets and pants.

“The new people didn’t know to safety pin the pants,” said John Davis, who was wearing running shorts underneath. “You can see a few people are struggling to hold them up the whole time.”

The untimed event started in the Joliet Central Fieldhouse and moved west on Cass Street to cut through the center of downtown – Chicago and Ottawa streets – and return to the campus on Jefferson Street.

Besides traffic control from Joliet police and auxiliary Will County sheriff’s deputies, the Santas got street support from ROTC and Key Club students wearing elf headgear.

Director Lynne Lichtenauer said alumni board member Linda Emmert saw the Santa Run in another town and proposed it as a fundraising idea last year.

“Nobody said we couldn’t and it was so much fun we did it again,” Lichtenauer said.

“Las Vegas gets 10,000 Santas, but we have snow. They have palm trees,” said alumni association member Sue Klen.

Registration funds will be used toward the college scholarships the association sponsors each year to one Central student and one West student. Lichtenauer said the association also makes

“It’s a good cause. A fun event. You eat all that turkey and now you can say you burned it off,” Davis said while catching his breath at the finish line.

Lichtenauer expects the Santa Run will be held every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving because many families are already together.

“It’s becoming a tradition.

Families do this together and take photos as they’re all dressed as Santa. They’ve asked me to make sure it will continue,” she said.

Rudolph was spotted pulling Santa’s sleigh at the Santa Run and Santa Stroll on Saturday morning.

Military passion runs in their family Get involved

Bounce Back Social Services was founded in 2012, when Wilhite decided it was time to give back to those who serve. So, she recruited Young, an Army veteran who was working as a veteran representative for the state of Colorado.

Bounce Back is a partner agency of the United Way of Will County, and is one of 45 agencies that will benefit from this year’s Herald Angels giving campaign. The Herald-News collects donations from its readers, which all go to support the United Way’s partner agencies.

Bounce Back Social Services provides mental health counseling to returning or homeless veterans, as well as their family members.

The family has a military pedigree: Wilhite’s husband was a medic in the Army and Air Force. Young’s husband is

Their brother, Johnny, is an Army veteran and their other sister is a sergeant major in the Army.

On top of their military connections, the sisters are both social work professionals.

Along with their staff and volunteers, they offer counseling, GED classes, a food pantry and social evenings for veterans.

“I have worked in social service and education for over 27 years,” chief executive officer Wilhite said. “And Jennifer is a registered psychotherapist. We’re so familiar with the military culture, and veterans are more apt to come here for counseling. They feel a little more comfortable just because we understand.”

Aid provided by Bounce Back includes resume coach-

ing, job search assistance, food assistance and general camaraderie.

“We help the families, too,” said Young, Bounce Back’s veterans program supervisor.

“If we take care of the veteran, but not the children, then there is a lack. Sometimes the veteran is helped to transition back to civilian life, but the family doesn’t know how to transition.”

And while one parent is deployed, Wilhite and Young understand the remaining spouse is also serving, raising their family alone. Bounce Back would like to provide them comfort during that time.

“We’re looking for more donations that will enable us to provide comfort to the family at home,” Wilhite said. “Like a

night out for a mom who’s left at home, or tickets to a game for dad. It’s saying that you, too, are important and deserve time for yourself.”

Bounce Back also helps veterans convert military skills into civilian skills on a resume, as Wilhite said employers often have a difficult time translating military assets into the attributes they seek in employees.

“We have to take their skills and conform it for someone who is not familiar with the military world,” she said. “Instead of putting ‘disciplined,’ they can use ‘prompt,’ or ‘dependable.’ ” Bounce Back Social Services has been a United Way partner agency since June and already has reaped benefits.

The partnership has opened doors for Bounce Back to work with other agencies and share a common goal.

“It’s an honor when United Way accepts you,” Wilhite said. “You’re able to put that logo on the window. It means a lot. It means what we’re doing is looked upon as a service needed.”

Giving Tuesday, created to promote charity, is near

Try giving a little on Giving Tuesday which is, yes, Tuesday.

This designated day of giving to charity, started just two years ago, is new enough that even some nonprofits are just catching on.

Sherry Ladislas, director of development at Trinity Services Inc. in New Lenox, said she had not heard of Giving Tuesday when her nonprofit

was invited to take part a year ago.

Helped out by matching funds from The Coleman Foundation, Trinity Services raised $55,990 on Giving Tuesday 2013 and is taking part this year.

Trinity Services, which provides services to people with disabilities, did so well a year ago that it finished second among those organizations raising funds through Razoo, a fundraiser website, on Giving Tuesday 2013, Ladislas said.

That was worth a $2,500 prize from Razoo, she said.

Last year’s experience has made Ladislas a believer in the potential of Giving Tuesday.

“If you think about it,” she said, “you’re a shopper out there and you’re a bargain hunter, and you’ve saved some

money on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. This gives you an opportunity to give back to the community.”

In the shopping frenzy that has become so frantic that people can barely wait to finish Thanksgiving dinner before hitting the stores, are that many people really thinking about giving back?

Mike Hennessy thinks so.

Hennessy, chief executive officer of the United Way of Will County, said Thanksgiving is a time when people and companies look for ways to make contributions to those in need.

“Now, it’s a time of heightened awareness when people are thankful for what they have throughout the year,” he said.

Giving Tuesday can only

help, he said.

“It’s a day of awareness like Black Friday,” Hennessy said.

“Here’s another way to help and give back to the community if you choose to do so.”

The United Nations Foundation is given credit as one of the originators of Giving Tuesday. According to the United Nations Foundation website, the first Giving Tuesday was in 2012 and was created as a global day of giving back.

The Community Foundation of Grundy County has organized 17 groups and agencies for a fundraising initiative on Giving Tuesday.

“The concept caught my attention,” said Kevin Yandell, pastor of the New Community Church in Morris. The church is participating in the Grun-

dy County effort, and Yandell said, “This gives us a special day to think about giving. Giving back is what the holidays are about.”

Tami Sender with People for Channahon Parks Foundation said her organization got on board with the Grundy County effort and will use money collected toward a $2 million capital campaign to complete work on Arroyo Trails.

“We really think Giving Tuesday is an interesting concept,” Sender said. “Instead of spending money shopping for gifts or for yourself, you can give to persons in need or to your favorite not-for-profit.”

AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE

Library trustee always thought of others first He loved history and community

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It seems fitting retired social studies teacher Jim Sczepaniak of Joliet took his place in the Joliet Public Library’s history by serving as a trustee since 1979 and, most recently, president of its board.

Jim was not an avid reader, said his wife, Fran Sczepaniak of Joliet, but he believed libraries, with their vast resources, were valuable to communities.

“He was instrumental in the second library on Black Road, getting the land purchased,” Fran said. “He was proud of that library.”

Jim’s personal history

is firmly rooted in Joliet.

A graduate of the former St. Joseph Catholic School in Joliet, he was an active member at St. Joseph Catholic Church, participating in its Holy Name Society and the St. Joseph Church Seniors.

The friendships Jim made in grade school were lifelong, Fran said.

“Two of them were pallbearers,” Fran said.

Neither Fran nor Jim’s sister, Lois Geary of Joliet, know the exact origins of Jim’s love for history. Fran knew Jim had worked construction for a time, but after nearly falling off an icy roof, he re-examined his career choice.

About the same time, Jim encountered one of his former Joliet Township High School teachers, who encouraged him to develop his full potential.

Lois said Jim also had a good friend who was a teacher.

Jim Sczepaniak served as president of the Joliet Public Library’s board and was an active member at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He eventually received his bachelor’s degree from Lewis University in Romeoville and his master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

For 33 years Jim taught

social studies, first at Lockport Township High School District 205 and then at Romeoville High School. His students were mainly honors students, Fran said, because he appreciated their critical thinking. Jim’s appearance was as stellar as his knowledge.

“He never went to work without a tie,” Fran said.

In fact, students would approach Jim and ask him to demonstrate tie-tying, Fran said. Jim had no tolerance for sloppy dress. Lois said that if boys came to Jim’s class without a belt, Jim would provide a piece of string to take the missing belt’s place.

“He greeted you with a smile when he met you – and a handshake,” Fran said, “definitely a handshake.”

Jim’s love for history spilled into his hobbies. He collected stamps and coins

and had a deep love for photography. Lois said Jim had bank boxes of magazines full of slides, with images dating back to his service in the U.S. Army. Jim eschewed digital for film and never left home without his camera.

“We actually put the camera in the coffin,” Fran said.

Jim took many photographs and developed multiple images of group photos, to ensure every person in each print had a copy. Yet, until the day he died Nov. 9 at age 78, there was one type of picture that never became part of his vast collection.

“He never took a selfie,” Lois said. “Jim always thought of other people first.”

Thanksgiving brings people together Holiday about gratitude, family is celebrated by those from all over the world Thanksgiving has its roots deep in American traditions, way back to when some of the first Pilgrims shared food and gave thanks with American Indians.

It’s also a day, celebrated in many cultures and religions, for giving thanks for a bountiful harvest and sharing of that food.

Thanksgiving may have different connotations to different people and different cultures, but it seems to come back to being thankful for what we do have and taking time to be with family and friends.

The Saavedra household in Shorewood was full of family and friends on Thanksgiving.

Ramon Saavedra, who hails from Texas, met his wife Signe Vic, of Norway, in Greece. Ramon was in the Navy at the time and Signe was on vacation, sunning herself on the beach.

The couple married in Texas, lived in Norway for a time and then came back to the U.S., where they eventually settled in Shorewood. They have two children, Nicholas and Emily.

Ramon’s sister and brother-in-law, Nena and Gary Good, now of Washington, D.C., and his children from Cincinnati, were all in for the holiday, as well.

Neighbors Dovile and Bhavesh Shah – Dovile is from Lithuania and Bhavesh is from India – and their little daughter Adela, all came to be part of the extended family

They don’t celebrate a Thanksgiving holiday in Norway, Signe said.

“But here it’s a chance to get family together and eat food,” she said.

In India, a similar tradition is part of a religious festival held in September or October, Bhavesh said. It’s a time to apologize to a friend and mend any differences they may have had.

“I think we have similar traditions,” Bhavesh said.

“We come from all different parts of the world. It’s a nice tradition and we will continue that.”

Thanksgiving is something newer for Dovile, who has been in the U.S. for 12 years.

“It’s an awesome tradition,” she said. “Sometimes we are busy with our lives and we don’t have time to be thankful.”

There was all types of food at the Saavedra house Thursday, for all kinds of tastes and nutritional needs. They had a deep-fried turkey and a spiral ham, some low-carb and regular sides, and there were vegetarian and gluten-free foods.

Shorewood officials approve consultant contract, road plan

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Village officials in Shorewood plan to attract more retailers and revamp roads.

The Village Board last week approved a $40,000 oneyear contract with The Retail Coach and about $1 million for a five-year road rehabilitation program.

Retail development

The Village Board on Tuesday unanimously approved the contract with The Retail Coach, a company that works with municipalities to analyze

market potential and attract new retailers.

The Mississippi-based company also is working with the city of Lockport.

In Shorewood, village officials will work with the company to analyze retail locations and determine what types of businesses should come to the area, said Roger Barrowman, village administrator.

The Retail Coach has connections with business developers and can find retailers as well, he said.

“We would just want to promote growth in Shorewood,” Barrowman said.

Road rehabilitation

Village officials also unanimously approved a five-year plan to fix roads in Shorewood.

The program will start in 2015. It will be funded with about $360,000 in motor fuel tax funds and $700,000 from the village’s capital project fund, Barrowman said.

Village officials said extreme Midwest weather and heavy use of the roads requires a comprehensive road rehabilitation program.

Engineers evaluated village roads to develop the plan, Barrowman said. The program also includes replacement of curbs and sidewalks, he said.

Wage question looms over final lawmaking session

SPRINGFIELD – The biggest issue hanging over Illinois lawmakers in a final threeday veto session this week is whether they can muster the votes to approve a minimum wage hike – an uphill climb that proponents are continuing to pursue amid behind-the-scenes maneuvering in both Springfield and Chicago.

Passing the increase would be a capstone on Gov. Pat Quinn’s decades-long political career, and Chicago officials are expediting an attempt to raise the city’s wage in anticipation of action in the capitol. With Quinn’s political capital waning in his final days in office, the statewide bill’s fate rests in the hands of fellow Democratic leaders with big majorities but their own agendas.

The General Assembly, which reconvenes Tuesday, has been quietly winding down for the year on most other substantive issues in the midst of the first inter-party transition between governors in more than a decade.

State Sen. Kimberly Lightford, a Maywood Democrat, said she intends to call the minimum wage bill for a vote in the Senate this week. Earlier this month, she introduced a new proposal that would increase the state’s current minimum wage of $8.25 to $11 for workers 18 and older by 2017.

While Senate President John Cullerton said he’s confident his chamber can pass the legislation in its current form, its fate in the House is far from certain.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ next state treasurer won the Nov. 4 election by 9,225 votes – the third-closest statewide race since at least 1900.

Democrat Michael Frerichs beat Republican Tom Cross 48 percent to 47.8 percent out of 3.5 million votes cast. Records collected and analyzed by The Associated Press show that the 0.261 percentage-point difference ranks it behind only the 1982 race for governor and 1952 campaign for secretary of state.

The Illinois State Board of Elections formally declared Frerichs the winner at a special

meeting Sunday. Cross – the former House minority leader from Oswego – led by 20,000 votes on Election Day. But the state senator from Champaign ate into that lead because of late-arriving ballots that were mailed or cast provisionally and counted later.

Illinois suit alleges Wells Fargo an unfair lender

ST. LOUIS – The Chicago area’s Cook County has filed a lawsuit against Wells Fargo & Co., accusing the nation’s biggest mortgage lender of subjecting minority and female borrowers to discriminatory and predatory lending practices that may involve hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit, which was filed Friday in Chicago, contends that Wells Fargo engaged in a

questioned practice called “equity stripping,” which involves imposing inflated or unneeded rates and fees, plus penalties to refinance. That practice, alleged to have taken place for much of the past decade, may involve up to 26,000 loans and compensatory damages that could top $300 million, according to the lawsuit.

ISU signs deal with Chinese university

NORMAL – Illinois State University has signed an agreement with a university in China to foster faculty and student exchanges as part of the school’s larger effort to increase international programs.

ISU signed the agreement with Wuhan University, a school about 750 miles south of Beijing with 34,000 undergraduate students.

ISU has a larger goal of providing more programs that develop a global environment. It wants more students to study abroad and to increase the number of foreign students studying in Normal. International students are about 2 percent of ISU’s student body.

Worker shot on Black Friday dies

CHICAGO – Authorities say a 22-year-old woman died a day after she was shot inside a Nordstrom department store in Chicago on Friday night.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office says Nadia Ezaldein was pronounced dead at 3:43 p.m. Saturday. Authorities say 31-year-old Marcus Dee shot her before killing himself.

Police say Ezaldein was a seasonal employee at the store.

Ferguson jurors faced safety fears, lots of work

By DAVID A. LIEB The Associated Press FERGUSON, Mo. – The grand jury responsible for reviewing the fatal shooting of Michael Brown faced “an awesome burden” and “an awful lot of work.”

So said St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch, addressing jurors when they convened Aug. 20, not long after Brown’s death touched off riots, looting and repeated clashes between protesters and heavily armored police.

Ninety-seven days later, those jurors decided not to indict white Ferguson officer Darren Wilson for the death of the black 18-year-old.

Their reasoning was not explained, because Missouri law keeps the deliberations of grand jurors confidential.

But in an unusual move, McCulloch released thousands of pages of testimony that jurors heard. The materials reveal that jurors raised concerns about their safety as they drew close to a decision, and that jurors not only listened to, but questioned, the dozens of witnesses that appeared before them. A look at how the process unfolded:

THE START

On the first day, McCulloch assured jurors their identities would be kept secret. But he encouraged them not to wear their grand jury badges when entering and exiting his office to avoid attracting notice. McCulloch then turned the case over to two assistants – Kathi Alizadeh, the prosecutor who was on call for August homicides, and Sheila Whirley, a prosecutor previously assigned to the grand jury.

The prosecutors began by focusing on the physical evidence, calling as witnesses a medical examiner, crime scene investigators and a forensic pathologist.

THE KEY PLAYERS

On Sept. 10, grand jurors turned their attention to Dorian Johnson, a friend who was with Brown on Aug. 9, the day of his death. Prosecutors played several TV news interviews of Johnson and a two-hour audio recording of an interview with him conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Jurors watched surveillance video of Brown robbing a convenience store of cigarillos shortly before he was killed. Then they heard testimony from Johnson, who portrayed Wilson as the aggressor in a confrontation that began when Wilson urged Brown and Johnson to quit walking in the street.

On Sept. 16, jurors heard Wilson’s version of events.

Prosecutors first called a Ferguson police sergeant, St. Louis County detective and FBI agent to testify about what Wilson told them.

Then Wilson spoke to jurors. He said he realized Brown was a robbery suspect after telling him to get out of the street. When he backed up his vehicle to cut off Brown, Wilson said Brown hit him and grabbed his gun. During an ensuing foot chase, Wilson said Brown turned back to

charge at him with one hand clenched in a fist and the other under his shirt at his waist. That’s when Wilson said he opened fire.

THE WITNESSES

From Sept. 23 through Nov. 4, grand jurors heard from dozens of witnesses with conflicting accounts. Most recounted a struggle between Brown and Wilson. But there was no consensus about what occurred moments later.

Many said Brown’s hands were raised when he was shot, though they were in disagreement about how high and in what fashion. Other witnesses insisted Brown’s hands weren’t raised at all.

THE WRAP-UP

Grand jurors began meeting more frequently in November. Some raised concerns about their personal safety and the potential for their identities to be discovered, prompting prosecutors on Nov. 10 to assure they would do their best to keep them safe. Jurors asked about the standards for police to use deadly force, then deliberated for nearly three hours on Nov. 21. They deliberated further on Nov. 24, then their decision was announced.

Cyber Monday effort gears up

By MAE ANDERSON The Associated Press NEW YORK – After a busy holiday weekend in shopping malls, millions of Americans are expected to log on and keep shopping on the day dubbed Cyber Monday.

The Monday after Thanksgiving has been the biggest online shopping day of the year since 2010. The day could take on added importance after a Thanksgiving weekend that saw fewer shoppers and lower spending than last year, according to some estimates.

Retailers have been pushing deals all month and particularly the past week, hoping to spur customers to spend. That may have taken away some spending from Thanksgiving weekend.

Research firm comScore expects people to spend about $2.5 billion on Cyber Monday.

There’s reason to think a lot of dollars are migrating online.

PayPal said its global mobile payment volume jumped 47 percent on Thanksgiving Day compared with last year.

Wal-Mart said it had more than 500 million page views on Thanksgiving, and eBay says it sold 2,000 iPad Air 2 tablets for $399 at a rate of one per second.

The name “Cyber Monday” was coined in 2005 by the National Retail Federation’s online arm, Shop.org, to encourage people to shop online. After retailers revved up deals for the day, it became the busiest online shopping day in 2010. The name was also a nod to online shopping

being done at work, where faster connections made it easier to browse, less of a factor now.

Cyber Monday comes after a weekend that saw 5.3 percent fewer shoppers and 11 percent less spending, according to estimates by the National Retail Federation.

“Online is nowhere near its maturity, so Cyber Monday should be big, with a lot of strength in the days leading up to it,” Forester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru said.

Justices to weigh limits of free online speech The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Anthony Elonis claimed he was just kidding when he posted a series of graphically violent rap lyrics on Facebook about killing his estranged wife, shooting up a kindergarten class and attacking an FBI agent.

But his wife didn’t see it that way. Neither did a federal jury. Elonis, who’s from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was convicted of violating a federal law that makes it a crime to threaten another person.

In a far-reaching case that probes the limits of free speech over the Internet, the

Supreme Court on Monday is set to consider whether Elonis’ Facebook posts, and others like it, deserve protection under the First Amendment.

Elonis argues that his lyrics were simply a crude and spontaneous form of expression that should not be considered threatening if he did not mean it. The government says it does not matter what Elonis intended, and that the true test of a threat is whether his words make a reasonable person feel threatened.

One post about his wife said, “There’s one way to love you but a thousand ways to kill you. I’m not going to rest until

your body is a mess, soaked in blood and dying from all the little cuts.”

The case has drawn widespread attention from freespeech advocates who say comments on Facebook, Twitter and other social media can be hasty, impulsive and easily misinterpreted. They point out that a message intended for a small group could be taken out of context when viewed by a wider audience.

“A statute that proscribes speech without regard to the speaker’s intended meaning runs the risk of punishing protected First Amendment expression simply because

it is crudely or zealously expressed,” said a brief from the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups.

But so far, most lower courts have rejected that view, ruling that a “true threat” depends on how an objective person perceives the message.

For more than four decades, the Supreme Court has said that “true threats” to harm another person are not protected speech under the First Amendment. But the court has been careful to distinguish threats from protected speech such as “political hyperbole” or “unpleasantly sharp attacks.”

ISTANBUL – Pope Francis and the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians demanded an end to the persecution of religious minorities in Syria and Iraq on Sunday and called for a “constructive dialogue” with Muslims, capping the pontiff’s three-day visit to Turkey with a strong show of Christian unity in the face of suffering and violence.

Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I issued a joint declaration urging leaders in the region to intensify assistance to victims of the Islamic State group, and especially to allow Christians who have had a presence in the region for 2,000 years to remain on their native lands.

“The terrible situation of Christians and all those who are suffering in the Middle East calls not only for our constant prayer but also for an appropriate response on the part of the international community,” they wrote.

Specifically, Francis told reporters on the way home from Istanbul that all Islamic leaders – political, religious, academic – should clearly condemn terrorism so that their people hear it directly from their mouths.

“We need a global condemnation – including from Muslims – who say ‘This isn’t who we are. This isn’t the Quran,’ ” he said.

Francis, who represents the 1.2 billion-strong Catholic Church, and Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the world’s 300 million Orthodox Christians, called for “constructive dialogue” with Islam “based on mutual respect and friendship.”

Francis’ outreach to Muslims in the Muslim nation, and his comments about the Islamic assault on Christians next door, took center stage during his visit: His prayer in Istanbul’s Sultan Ahmet mosque was replayed again and again on Turkish TV in a sign that his gesture was appreciated.

New approach taken for elderly addicts in Bronx The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – A surge in baby boomers has driven up the number of elderly people abusing drugs or alcohol, bringing more attention to the sometimes-delicate problems involved in treating addiction in the aging.

Last summer, the Jewish Home Lifecare nursing home in the Bronx set out to address those issues. Patients 60 and older who come in for rehab after a hospital stay also are screened for addiction and offered a chance at recovery.

Eight beds have been set aside to start, and the nursing home expects to get 480 patients a year. Associate Administrator Gregory Poole-Dayan believes it’s the first nursing home to integrate addiction recovery into medical rehabilitation to reach addicts who otherwise might not seek help.

Experts said a focus on elderly addicts is increasing-

ly needed as the population grows. A 2009 study in the journal Addiction found that because of the large size “and high substance abuse rate” of the baby boom generation, the number of Americans over 50 with abuse problems was expected to reach 5.7 million by 2020, double the 2006 figure.

KABUL, Afghanistan – Taliban suicide attackers killed the South African leader of a foreign aid group, his son and daughter and an Afghan worker in an assault on the agency’s Kabul offices, authorities said Sunday, as the city’s police chief resigned after the latest insurgent attack there.

Police chief Gen. Mohammed Zahir told reporters before his resignation that the attack Saturday actually killed four people, raising the death toll in the assault near the Afghan parliament. He offered no other details about the victims and did not name the aid group.

A Redlands, California-based group called Partnership in Academics and Development later posted a notice on its website saying several of its staffers died during an attack Saturday in Kabul.

3 coaches who deserve moment of glory VIEWS Dick Goss That’s more like it.

A year ago, the Joliet area sported five quarterfinalists in the state football playoffs, at least a couple of which were championship material. But on Black Saturday, we went 0-5, with every loss a gut-wrencher.

Those who follow high school football in this area felt that was a mere bump in the road. We knew this area would be back sooner than later.

Over the weekend at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Providence and Wilmington celebrated state championships while Lemont claimed a runner-up trophy.

Our area missed an opportunity to have three football champions in one season for the first time, but 2014 forever will be in the team picture of our many great seasons.

Helping make the weekend special were the coaches whose team were there. We have been rooting for Providence’s Mark Coglianese and Wilmington’s Jeff Reents to get their first title for some time now. They deserve this.

To have it happen on the same weekend was outstanding.

Talk with those guys, and they deflect attention to their players and their assistant coaches. They are the ones they are happiest for. That’s the kind of people they are.

But rest assured, they were ecstatic.

Providence (13-1) defeated previously unbeaten CaryGrove, 31-28, for the Class 7A title; and Wilmington (14-0) slipped past previously unbeaten Williamsville, 20-17, on Jordan Sarr’s last-play field goal for the Class 3A crown.

When they discuss classic championship games for years to come, these two will be recalled.

“When the game ended, had we lost, I still would have felt as proud of the players as I can be, and we wouldn’t treat the future any different,” Reents said. “We would be getting right back to work in the weight room. The goal

of our coaches always is to get the kids to play at that [state-championship] level.

“Tonight, we got the ball inside [the left upright on Sarr’s game-winner]. There were times in the past when we were on the outside looking in. But we’ve had a good program. A state championship was the one missing piece.”

“I feel great for our staff and these guys right here,” Coglianese said, referring to the players with him for the Celtics’ postgame meeting with the media. “It all comes down to these guys here.”

So, no, the area did not finish with three state titles, only two. But if we were in the business of citing a coach of the year, we may have had to go with tri-winners. For Kooi to guide Lemont to the championship game in his inaugural season, the year after they finished 3-6, is a job well done indeed.

All three of our schools involved in championship games have rich traditions in boys sports. For example, Wilmington, a wrestling power, had a three-year stretch a decade ago where it won two

both were the head coach for one runner-up finish. Before Saturday, Lemont’s Bret Kooi, another class act, had been to Class 8A championship games with Lockport in 2002 and 2003, and won both. In his first season with the Indians (13-1), he helped bring them to Champaign, where they lost to unbeaten and highly ranked Nazareth, 26-7.

“We wanted to send these quality guys out with a win in the state championship game,” Kooi said as he glanced at the handful of players who accompanied him to the Lemont postgame gathering. “I feel

state baseball titles sandwiched around a third-place finish. Last spring, Providence, now a 10-time state football champion, and Lemont both won state baseball titles at Silver Cross Field.

“Let’s see, these guys [including all-state quarterback Justin Hunniford] won baseball, now we won football,” Celtics all-state receiver Miles Boykin said with a smile. “I guess what’s left is to win the basketball championship.”

Boykin will see what he can do about making that happen. He will start preparing in earnest for the winter game once he gets the pin removed that was surgically placed in his left pinkie finger after it was dislocated in Round 2 of the playoffs. Whenever Boykin is ready, he will provide an immediate lift for coach Tim Trendel’s basketball team.

Still, there is nothing to match a state championship in football in terms of the effect it has on the entire school and community. It was a weekend that will not soon be forgotten.

Packers hold off Patriots in high-profile battle

By GENARO C. ARMAS The Associated Press GREEN BAY, Wis. – If this was a Super Bowl preview, with Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady in starring roles, the NFL will be thrilled.

Rodgers threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns, Eddie Lacy powered for key yards in the fourth quarter, and the Green Bay Packers fended off the New England Patriots 2621 Sunday in a high-profile

matchup between Super Bowl contenders.

Rodgers bested Brady in the first meeting between the star quarterbacks as starters. Rodgers connected with Richard Rodgers and Jordy Nelson for long touchdowns.

Leading by five, the defense held firm late for the Packers (9-3). Mike Daniels and Mike Neal combined to sack Brady on third down for a 9-yard loss, and kicker Stephen Gostkowkski pushed a 47-yard field-goal

attempt wide right with 2:40 left.

The Packers sealed it after Rodgers converted to Cobb on third-and-4 with the Patriots out of timeouts.

Brady finished 22 of 35 for 245 yards and two touchdown passes to Brandon LaFell for New England (9-3), whose seven-game winning streak was snapped. The second score came from 15 yards early in the fourth quarter to get within 23-21.

The lead could have been wider for the Packers if not for

some hiccups in the red zone.

Green Bay settled for four field goals from Mason Crosby of 35 yards or less, including a 28-yarder to make it a fivepoint lead with 8:41 left. That kick came after rookie Davante Adams dropped a potential touchdown pass on third-and-5 from the New England 10.

On his knees, a frustrated Rodgers buried his helmet into the turf in frustration.

But he was celebrating at the end. Green Bay has won

four in a row and eight of nine.

Rodgers finished 24 of 38, while Lacy had 98 yards on 21 carries, including 26 on the ground in the fourth-quarter drive that led to Crosby’s field goal. Adams had a career-best 121 yards on receptions.

Rodgers extended his record streaks to 360 consecutive passes at home and 31 touchdown passes in a row at home without an interception. His last interception at home came nearly two years ago on Dec. 2, 2012.

JCA grad Fleener helps Colts to record-setting win The ASSOCIATED PRESS INDIANAPOLIS – Andrew Luck threw a career-high five touchdown passes and topped the 300-yard mark for a franchise-record 10th time this season in Indianapolis in the Colts’ 49-27 win Sunday over the Redskins.

Indianapolis (8-4) won for the eighth time in 10 games since starting 0-2.

Luck was 19 of 27 for 370 yards and had TD passes of 30, 3, 48, 73 and 79 yards. He broke Peyton Manning’s mark for most 300-yard games in one season and joined Manning and Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks to top 4,000 yards in two of their first three seasons.

The game also was a notable one for Joliet Catholic Academy grad Coby Fleener. As part of a second-half shootout, Luck hooked up with Fleener, who broke Everette Brown’s tackle and went 73 yards for the score to give Indy a 42-24 lead. Fleener finished with four catches for 127 yards and two TDs. Washington (3-9) has lost four straight.

Bengals 14, Buccaneers 13:

Andy Dalton ran for one touchdown and threw to A.J. Green for another in Tampa, helping the Bengals overcome numerous mistakes.

Dalton shrugged off three first-half interceptions, and the Bengals (8-3-1) weathered 10 penalties and an ill-advised onside kick that cost them mo-

mentum after taking the lead in the second half to win on the road for the third consecutive week. That’s a franchise first that seemed improbable following a lopsided home loss to Cleveland a month ago.

Tampa Bay (2-10) threatened in the closing minutes.

However, a 21-yard completion that would have put the Bucs in field goal range was overturned after a replay review confirmed the Bucs had 12 men on the field on the play.

Chargers 34, Ravens 33:

Philip Rivers capped a frantic drive in Baltimore with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Royal with 38 seconds to go.

The Chargers (8-4) trailed 3020 with 6:13 remaining and 3327 with 2:22 left before Rivers brought them back.

Following a pass interference call against Anthony Levine in the end zone, Rivers hit Royal to conclude an 80yard march to the Chargers’ third straight win.

Baltimore (7-5) lost at home in November for the first time since 2009. The Ravens were 11-0 all-time at home against West Coast teams.

Saints 35, Steelers 32: Drew Brees threw five touchdowns for the ninth time in his career as the Saints dominated the sloppy Steelers in Pittsburgh.

Kenny Stills caught five passes for a career-high 162 yards and a score as the Saints (5-7) ended a three-game losing streak by restoring a little bit of respectability and a sense of

The Steelers (7-5) kept New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham without a catch, but it hardly mattered. Brees worked over Pittsburgh’s secondary anyway. Ben Watson, Marques Colston, Erik Lorig and Nick Toon hauled in touchdowns.

Bills 26, Browns 10: Quarterback Kyle Orton and defensive end Jerry Hughes scored touchdowns 10 seconds apart in the third quarter in Orchard Park, New York.

Orton put the Bills ahead 7-3 with a 3-yard pass to Chris Hogan. Buffalo’s defense scored on the next play from scrimmage when Hughes stripped the ball from running back Terrence West, and returned the fumble 18 yards.

The Bills (7-5) won their second straight. Cleveland (7-5) lost for only the second time in six games.

Falcons 29, Cardinals 18: Julio Jones had a career day in Atlanta, catching 10 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown to keep the Falcons (5-7) in first place in the NFC South.

Arizona (9-3) still leads the NFC West after its second straight loss, but its lead over defending Super Bowl champion Seattle dwindled to a single game.

Texans 45, Titans 21: Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for a franchise-record six touchdowns and DeAndre Hopkins had a career-best 238 yards receiving and two scores in Houston.

J.J. Watt helped out in the win, too. He had his third touchdown reception, two sacks, forced and recovered a fumble for Houston (6-6).

The Titans (2-10) have lost six straight.

Rams 52, Raiders 0: Tre Mason scored two long touch-

downs and Shaun Hill accounted for three TDs in the rout in St. Louis. The Rams had an outof-nowhere 38-point first half that tied for second biggest in franchise history.

The Rams (5-7) scored touchdowns on their first five possessions. The Raiders (1-11) were never competitive and committed five turnovers.

Vikings 31, Panthers 13: Adam Thielen and Everson Griffen each returned blocked punts

by Minnesota for touchdowns in Minneapolis, the fifth time in league history one team had two in the same game.

Teddy Bridgewater threw for two scores without a turnover, and Griffen had two of the four sacks by the Vikings (5-7) against Cam Newton.

Despite entering the week just a half-game out of first place in the struggling NFC South, the Panthers (3-8-1) again stumbled out of their bye.

Jaguars 25, Giants 24: Josh Scobee kicked a 43-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining, and the Jaguars rallied from a 21-point deficit in Jacksonville.

The Jaguars (2-10) ended a four-game losing streak and dealt the Giants (3-9) a seventh consecutive loss that could raise more questions about coach Tom Coughlin’s future.

Rookie Aaron Colvin returned a fumble 41 yards for a touchdown in the fourth period. It was the first time in franchise history Jacksonville scored two defensive touchdowns in the same game.

The Bulls, who improved to 9-3 on the road this season, led at beginning of the third quarter, 47-42. After Brooklyn’s Kevin Garnett hit a five-foot bank jumper that made it 48-46, Gasol ignited a 17-4 run by scoring six of his eight points during the spurt to make it 56-46 with 8:13 left in the quarter.

A turnover by Deron Williams led to Rose connecting with Butler for an alley-oop that made it 58-48. After Williams’ basket, Butler hit a turnaround jumper that extended the lead. Rose followed that with a 3-pointer, and Gasol capped the run by beating the Nets players’ for a loose ball and making a layup, extending the lead, 65-50, with 5:11 left.

During that run for the Bulls, their defense forced

three turnovers and made the Nets miss three shots.

Overall, the Bulls limited Brooklyn to 9-of-25 shooting from the field, including 0 of 7 beyond the arc.

“We were just getting some easy baskets, getting up and down in transition.

But more than anything, we were just getting stops on the defensive end, creating a few turnovers and rebounding the basketball,” Butler said.

The Nets’ latest loss was their seventh in the last nine games. Brooklyn has yet to beat a team with a winning record this season. Three of their next four games are against teams with records above .500.

“Consciously, I don’t think we’re thinking of that,” Garnett said. “I think we respect every team. We try to get ready for every team.”

Alabama is No. 1.

Each of the last seven college football seasons, Alabama has been the No. 1 team in The Associated Press college football poll at some point. That’s each season Nick Saban has been the coach in Tuscaloosa, save for his first.

It’s the longest such streak since Miami’s great teams did it from 1986 to 1992.

The Tide (11-1) took the top spot in the rankings away from undefeated Florida State (12-0) on Sunday in a move that doesn’t happen much in the AP rankings.

The last time an undefeated team was No. 2 behind a team that had lost this late in the season was 1993. The Seminoles vaulted back into the top spot past No. 2 and unbeaten Nebraska at the conclusion of their regular season, despite losing to Notre Dame a few weeks earlier.

Florida State went on to beat Nebraska in the Orange Bowl and win coach Bobby Bowden’s first national championship.

This Florida State (12-0), which racked up its sixth victory in a one-score game Saturday night against Florida, will try to flip that script and win its second straight national championship under coach Jimbo Fisher.

But back to ’Bama and why this edition of the Tide represents another example of Saban’s greatness – as if we didn’t already have enough.

Alabama has been viewed as the last bastion of old-school football. Run the ball. Stop the run. Control the ball and the game. Alabama’s old-schoolness gets overplayed in these days of high-speed spread offense – Saban’s teams have been plenty explosive offensively while winning three national titles – but there has been a difference this season.

The highest-scoring Iron Bowl exemplified Saban’s decision to keep with the times.

The days of winning with defense are done in college football. The Southeastern Conference finally has succumbed to the spread offense revolution, with Auburn coach Gus Malzahn leading the way.

The Tide is going no-huddle, getting its a dual-threat quarterback involved in the running game, and is generally better equipped to win games in this new era of football.

And now Alabama is No. 1 again, a victory against Missouri in the Southeastern Conference title game from reaching the new College Football Playoff and playing for another national title.

Marshall went from unbeaten to unranked after losing a wild one, 67-66, in overtime on Friday against Western Kentucky.

NEW YORK – Jimmy Butler is proving that he is indispensable to the Bulls.

Butler had 26 points and Pau Gasol added 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bulls to a 102-84 win Sunday over the Brooklyn Nets.

Entering his fourth season in the NBA after the Bulls made him the last – and 30th – player chosen in the first round of the 2011 draft, Butler previously totaled 20 or more points only nine times in 191 games.

The 25-year-old already has eclipsed that mark this year, notching his 11th 20-plus point game.

Wearing his favorite football jersey on a Sunday – an orange Denver Broncos Demaryius Thomas jersey – Butler downplayed his success after averaging 13.1 points last season.

“I think my teammates just find me in great positions to score the ball,” Butler said. “I think I strive at just doing whatever it takes to help my team win. Scoring, guarding, facilitating, whatever it might be. I’m just a winner. I don’t care about stats.”

Rookie Bojan Bogdanovic led the Nets with 13 points, and Jarrett Jack added 12.

Derrick Rose had 14 points, and reserve Nikola Mirotic chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls, who capped a seven-game, 14-day road trip with their second straight win and finished 4-3 overall.

Chicago’s United Center had been reserved for the annual circus show, forcing the Bulls on the road.

“We ended on a good note. I think that was our best game throughout the entire trip,” Rose said.

“Halfway through the trip, we were kind of on the bubble, right around a playoff spot, and we talked about trying to gain ground and gain momentum going into the second 20 games,” Richards said. “We did a great job of that. We had big tests against good teams; and we piled up five out of six, which is huge.”

Jordan Nolan scored for Los Angeles, and Quick stopped 21 shots.

Trailing, 2-0, the Kings got on the board at 5:53 of the second period when defenseman Jake Muzzin’s slap shot from the left point hit the shaft of Nolan’s stick

and fluttered between Crawford’s pads.

It was the first goal in 14 games this season for Nolan, who would have been a healthy scratch if not for Marian Gaborik’s upper-body injury.

The Hawks regained their two-goal margin at 8:14 of the second on a rush in which four players touched the puck in the Kings end.

Richards converted Michal Rozsival’s pass at the left of the net for his sixth goal and third in two games.

“It’s nice when the team starts rolling and you feel like you’re helping,” said Richards, who is playing on a line with Kris Versteeg and Patrick Kane. “Every day, it feels more like it’s my team. It takes a little bit to feel like you’re a part of everything on and off the ice.”

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Brad Richards left Los Angeles in a much better frame of mind this time with the Blackhawks than he did after he and the New York Rangers lost the Stanley Cup finals to the Kings.

Richards scored two goals to lead the Blackhawks to a 4-1 victory over the Kings on Saturday night in a matchup of teams that both won two of the past five Stanley Cup titles.

“Coming in here is a little bittersweet,” said Richards, who failed to score against goalie Jonathan Quick in the five-game final series against Los Angeles. “The feeling is, I wish I had done it the last time I was in here.

We would have kept the series going.”

The 14-year veteran signed a one-year deal with the Blackhawks after the Rangers bought out the final six years of his nine-year, $60 million contract.

“It’s obvious that a nineyear deal going to New York is a lot different than a one-year deal coming into a team that won two Cups,” Richards said. “I was fortunate enough that I could be picky in the summer and try to find a good fit, and here we are.

“It’s funny, because now I’m on the team they beat to get to us.”

When North opened one club, East should have overcalled two clubs, a Michaels Cue-Bid showing at least 5-5 in the majors.

Yes, he had only six points, but he had 6-5 distribution, he owned the majors and the vulnerability was favorable.

West’s takeout double was highly debatable opposite a partner who could not act over one club.

North’s three-spade rebid described his hand well.

What did declarer do after winning the first trick with his heart ace and drawing trumps, learning that East started with only one?

Obviously, five – and six! – diamonds depended totally on South’s decision in the club suit. Given East’s silence in the bidding, it looked as if declarer would never place him with two minor-suit singletons. But at the table, South played a club to the jack on the first round of the suit and took all 13 tricks!

Dear Doctor K: For years I’ve been taking a PPI twice a day for heartburn.

My doctor wants me to cut back, or stop altogether.

But the idea frightens me.

Do you think it’s possible?

Dear Reader: To anyone tormented by frequent heartburn, not taking your daily tablet – or tablets – of omeprazole (Prilosec) or lansoprazole (Prevacid) might seem like a scary idea.

These and similar drugs, known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), are the foundation of treatment for heartburn, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

GERD occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. I’ve put an illustration of how reflux occurs on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

PPIs work by shutting down the acid-producing “pumps” in the stomach.

They sharply reduce acid secretion and therefore the irritation it causes when stomach contents back up into the esophagus.

A number of my patients whose GERD was tamed by PPIs, and now have no symptoms, have been able to successfully taper off of them. This is more likely if they also make the lifestyle changes that reduce the symptoms of GERD. Those include: • Lose weight. Being overweight is the leading cause of reflux.

• Avoid eating large meals. Instead, eat more frequent, smaller meals.

• Avoid eating two to three hours before your normal bedtime.

• Sleep with your upper body slightly above stomach level by elevating the head of the bed slightly on blocks or by using a wedge-shaped cushion.

This reduces pressure on the opening between the upper stomach and base of the throat. Just propping up your head with pillows won’t work.

• Avoid certain foods that can trigger heart-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff burn. They include chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, acidic foods, spicy foods or fatty foods. Try cutting them out for a while to see if it makes a difference.

• Completely avoid foods with mint. Mint may loosen the passageway from the stomach to the esophagus and allow acidic material to back up into the esophagus and throat.

What’s the problem with remaining on the PPIs indefinitely? There is some evidence that longterm use may increase your risk of developing a type of pneumonia called aspiration pneumonia, and a potentially serious intestinal infection with the bacteria called C. difficile. It may also cause you not to absorb enough calcium, magnesium, vitamin B12 or iron.

To taper down on your PPI, start by gradually reducing the dose and frequency until you are taking the lowest dose once a day. Then, gradually replace the PPI with an H2 blocker, an acid-reducing drug. Examples include cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), famotidine (Pepcid) and nizatidine (Axid). Switching to an H2 blocker may help you to stop taking a PPI. I don’t think we have solid evidence of serious side effects from long-term use of H2 blockers. The evidence of adverse effects from long-term use of PPIs is somewhat stronger. But suppose you’ve been free of GERD symptoms for several months on a PPI. If you’re committed to lifestyle changes, it’s worth talking with your doctor about how to gradually taper off your PPI.

Dear Abby: For those who are looking for gift suggestions for older parents, may I offer what my kids do for us?

They live far away and usually visit us in the spring and fall.

Before they leave, my daughter scrubs my bathroom shower and the rest of the room, cleans my refrigerator, oven, kitchen cabinets, my carpets – things that are difficult for me to do.

While she’s inside doing that, my son-in-law is outside trimming trees and bushes, doing general yard cleanup in the spring and raking leaves and disposing of them in the fall.

In addition, during the months BEFORE their visit, my daughter is setting aside and freezing small portions of entrees so we will have future dinners from her meals.

She also freezes an assortment of different soups in zip-lock bags, laid flat so they will fit well in my freezer.

While they’re here, they cook all the meals and do the cleanup. What a wonderful gift!

Even if some families don’t cook, they could make up small meals with deli purchases and freeze them for their parents.

Nothing could be appreciated more. Instead of buying a useless gift because “We didn’t know what to get you – you said you didn’t want anything,” these are gifts that keep on giving! – Truly Blessed

And please, don’t forget that the holiday season can be a depressing time for people who are alone.

I am often asked for gift ideas for the person “who already has everything.”

My answer: The greatest gift a person can give is the gift of yourSELF. If you know someone who could use an outing, offer the most meaningful gift of all – an invitation to share a meal with you or your family.

This work will include tree trimming, tree removal and brush control to clear vegetation away from ComEd electric wires running from pole to pole. This work is necessary because trees interfering with electric lines can cause service outages and safety hazards. Line clearance is not required on all properties in these areas.

No line clearance work will be performed on wires running from utility poles to homes or buildings. Maps of the affected areas are on file at local municipal or county offices. All trees requiring maintenance in each area will be addressed during these projects. Property owners may appeal the planned vegetation management activities through ComEd or the Illinois Commerce Commission.
