Masonic Lodge Braidwood Freemasonry in the United States is as old as our country, and Masonic Lodges are found in many communities across America.

No one really knows with certainty how or when the Masonic Fraternity was formed. Masonic scholars trace its origins to the stonemasons’ guilds during the Middle Ages as the language and symbols used in the fraternity’s rituals come from this era.

As a radical-thought movement that emerged from the Reformation, freemasonry was the first widespread and well-connected organization that touted religious toleration and liberty – principles that the fraternity helped spread through the American colonies.

Since the Revolution, Freemasons have become the semiofficial celebrants of American civic culture. Wearing their distinctive aprons and wielding the trowels of their craft – the original Masons were, in fact, stonemasons – they routinely laid the cornerstones of important government buildings and churches and participated in parades and other public ceremonies around the country.

There is no secret that Freemasons and their grandiose rituals have played a secret and mysterious role in early American life as so many prominent members of the founding generation – George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and, indeed, at least 15 signers of the Declaration of Independence – were members or had some affiliation with the Freemasons.

nized fraternal movement, Freemasonry has been the object of wide curiosity and occasional suspicion.

With its elaborate secret rituals, its involvement in ancient wisdom, its link to Enlightenment science and reason, and its exclusive membership, the Masonic brotherhood always has been the subject of interest to those on the outside.

Even one of the greatest symbols associated with Freemasonry: the eye-and-pyramid of the Great Seal of the United States, found on the back of the one-dollar bill, has proved almost tailor-made for weavers of conspiracy theories.

the Masons have had a real impact on America and is richer and more significant that anything entertainment or speculation could drum up. While the number of Freemasons has been on a decline since World War II, the brotherhood, which numbers nearly four million worldwide, still continues its philanthropic ways by supporting a wide range of causes.

Today, Masonic lodges can be found in many small-town communities across America.

For example, as the Braidwood-Coal City area was settled, the Braidwood Lodge No. 704 came into existence.

cated on the south side of Main Street, just west of the present Masonic Temple. Alexander (Sandy) Patterson was its first Master. This organization had a great influence on the early development of the area.

In 1914, a two-story brick building, shown in the then photograph, was built just east of the old building.

The building was dedicated the same year. For many years, the building also was the home to Order of the Eastern Stars, which was organized as an auxiliary of the local Masonic Lodge in 1891.

New Wilmington police station viewed as significant improvement

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Criminals used to come through the main doors of the Wilmington Police Department for processing, meaning they would pass any residents sitting in the 8-by-4 lobby area.

But Saturday, it was the beginning of a new chapter as the department opened the doors of its new $2 million building at 129 Robert P. Weidling Drive to the public for an open house, showcasing its increased capabilities to handle police operations.

The department moved into the new station in June, but the building still has a crisp smell and clean look.

“I think it’s pretty good,” Mayor Marty Orr said. “When you talk about functionality, it’s really fluid and the checks and balances are in place.”

Dozens of people toured the station Saturday, including Wilmington resident Brianne Riggs and her 7-year-old son, Gavin.

“It’s definitely bigger than I thought,” Riggs said. “My son is big into the police and firemen. It’s also for the kids to know if something ever happens, to not be afraid of the police.”

Station needs

In 1981, the police department moved into the old 1,500-square-foot station at 120 N. Main St., 24 years after it was built as a post office.

The thought was that the department would stay there for a couple of years and move into a permanent building.

But two years turned into 10 years, which became 34 years until the move into the new station in June.

The population of the small town – 5,724 people in 2010 – has grown at a high rate over the past three decades, according to U.S. Census data. That has put a strain on the depart-

ment, which employs 18 staff members.

There was a need for change, and it has finally come with the new building,

Police Chief Phillip Arnold said.

“It’s just a nice change,” said patrol officer Todd Lyons, who has worked at the depart-

ment for 25 years. “If anybody could see our last police department, it was pretty embarrassing and [the new station] was much needed.”

Plainfield preschool program gets grant

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Bonnie McBeth Early Learning Center received $930,000 under a state-funded preschool program to serve hundreds of students.

When the school first became involved with Preschool for All in the 2004-05 school year, it received a $60,000 grant to serve up to 40 students. But the program has expanded and now, with $930,000, the school can serve up to 320 students.

The grant pays for all costs

associated with the program, such as salaries and classroom supplies.

“For a district as large as ours, we’re lucky to have a strong Preschool for All program. I can’t rave enough about it,” said Mina Griffith, assistant superintendent for student services in Plainfield School District 202 and past Bonnie McBeth principal.

Preschool for All provides free preschool five days a week for students who qualify based on risk and developmental factors, District 202 officials said in a news release. The program

allows a preschool teacher to alert a student’s kindergarten teacher about any potential issues to smooth the transition between grades.

The program serves children who show delays in cognitive, speech, social emotional or physical developments, according to the Bonnie McBeth Early Learning Center, as well as those eligible based on federal income guidelines. Children must be 3 years old as of Sept.

1 of the current year to benefit.

Griffith said the program helps students develop good learning skills before “entering

the doors of kindergarten.”

“All the research has shown that all students who have the chance to attend a preschool program, it has a huge impact on their life,” she said.

Research also supports students receiving social and emotional support to help them succeed in their academic future, she said.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the early years of a child’s life are critical, especially for children from low-income families or who have disabilities. Their access to high-quality education

early on may determine their success in kindergarten and beyond.

Schools must apply each year and meet certain state educational standards to qualify for the competitive grant.

District officials said about seven years ago Bonnie McBeth ran out of room so the program was expanded to satellite locations at Thomas Jefferson, Charles Reed and Elizabeth Eichelberger elementary schools. This year, two classes were moved to Creekside Elementary because of space limitations at other schools.

Interest gauged for front-door pickup for electronics

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Electronics and hazardous waste disposal could get much easier for Plainfield residents as the village gauges interest in a program from Waste Management.

Mayor Michael Collins and Community Relations Director Amy De Boni revealed Wednesday during the monthly Coffee with the Mayor event the “At Your Door” program, in which Waste Management personnel would conduct scheduled front-door pickups of bagged electronics, paint and other products that can’t go in the garbage.

Residents schedule the pickup and bag the items with a special materials kit provided by Waste Management.

Then a special service technician from the company will pick up the waste.

The program was presented to the village by Waste Management earlier last week, Collins said. But Collins is directing staff to survey residents through the village’s website.

“I feel it’s a definite worthwhile program,” Collins said.

The service isn’t free. It would add between $1 and $1.50 to residents’ utility bill a month.

Automotive, paint, mercury, household cleaner, needles or flammable, swimming pool, garden chemical, battery and other household products are accepted.

Vehicle batteries, fluorescent tubes and CFL lights, TVs, computer systems and

electronics with circuit boards also will be picked up, but they need to be outside the kit bag.

Unacceptable items include biological waste, medicines, ammunition and personal hygiene products, among others.

Collins said a public input item will be placed on the village’s website to gather interest in the service.

Former Joliet pastor and musician used talents and calling for others

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Former Joliet resident R. Hilton Griswold – pastor, musician and television performer – grew up on an 80-acre sharecropper farm in Central Texas and loved music from early boyhood, said Hilton’s son, Larry Griswold of Plainfield.

Hilton especially enjoyed listening to southern gospel quartets from a Dallas radio R. Hilton station and then replicating Griswold what he heard on the family’s pump organ, Larry said. He became quite the accomplished pianist and was completely self-taught, a fact that was evident to other professional musicians.

“When my dad played chords on the piano, the fingering was all wrong,” Larry said, “but that’s how he taught himself to play. Musicians would look at him and say, ‘Wow, that’s funny. That’s not the right technique.’ ” At 21, Hilton attended the Stamps-Baxter Music Company in Dallas for vocal training and became the original pianist for the Blackwood Brothers Quartet, Larry said.

Hilton played with the quartet for 10 years, retiring in 1950 to become a full-time pastor.

“Music and ministry were my dad’s life,” Larry said.

“People were his focus.”

Hilton spent 65 years in active ministry, most of them pastoring churches in Iowa and Missouri, but he never left music far behind him, Larry said. In 1984, when Larry was pastor of First Assembly of God Church in Joliet, Hilton joined the church’s pastoral team.

“His work ethic was incredibly high and I think that goes back to his rural roots,” Larry said. “His friendliness was at the top of the charts. He was very willing to speak to strangers, to make friends.”

Hilton, Larry said, was dedicated to visiting church members in the hospitals, along with visiting any other patients who needed pastoral care.

“His intention was to pastor the community, not just the church,” Larry said. “He wasn’t out there circulating, but whenever a door opened, he kept following it. He met the

needs wherever they were.”

During the 14 years Hilton served at First Assembly, he began his own television program, “Young at Heart,” which aired on WCFC TV 38 in Chicago. Over time, Hilton moved production to WVCY in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and called the show “Inspiration Time.”

Performing with him were Larry, Robert Hahn of Joliet and Raymond Mitchell of Ottawa, known together as Parsons Four Quartet, Larry said.

In fact, Hilton’s show was still in production at the time of his death May 5 at the age of 93.

“A number of stations that broadcast my dad’s program are still airing them,” Larry said. “They have tagline notes that he has passed away, and I answer his mail. I receive 15 to 20 pieces of mail every week from people who are regularly watching his program and just write. His legacy lives on.”

Orr said he expects the City Council will decide what to do with the old police station in the coming months.

ROMEOVILLE – The American Red Cross is accepting nominations to honor local standouts from Northern Illinois at its annual Heroes Breakfast in the spring.

The Red Cross honors community members every year who have demonstrated heroism through extraordinary acts of courage or kindness, according to a news release from the organization.

LOCAL BRIEF Firefighters respond to fire at Johns Manville plant

ROCKDALE – Firefighters responded Sunday to a fire at a Rockdale plant.

About 10:30 a.m., the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department received a report of a fire at the Johns Manville roofing systems plant at 2151 W. Channahon Road, according to Chief Bill Waznis.

The fire caused no structural damage or injuries, Waznis said, but a number of roofing insulation pallets were destroyed.

Waznis said it is likely the pallets were packed recently after the insulation was produced, when the material still was hot, resulting in the fire. He also said they were packed tightly and stacked 15 feet high.

Rockdale firefighters respond to similar incidents at the business about three times a year, according to Waznis.

Waznis was unable to provide a damage estimate.

He said several area fire agencies assisted, and cleanup concluded about 2 p.m.

A call to Johns Manville’s Rockdale location requesting comment was not immediately returned.

Peacefully Thursday, November 5, 2015, at his home with his family by his side following a long debilitating illness.

Born in Chicago on St. Patrick’s Day and a Joliet resident since 1942. A graduate of Joliet Catholic High School, Class of 1952.

Retired from the EJ&E Railroad as a locomotive engineer after many years of service. Former member of the International Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. A former radio announcer with WAJP and WJOL. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #382. A member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and St. Patrick Men’s Club. Patrick was an accomplished organist and enjoyed playing and attending organ concerts. But a great big smile could be seen from ear to ear when the grandchildren were playing baseball and it was time to go watch the games. He was also an avid Cubs fan.

Preceded by his daughter, Mary in infancy; his parents, James A. and Ruth L. (nee Callahan) Gossman; and one sister, Mary Ann Gossman.

Angeleke was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be remembered for her gentleness and kindness.

Small school districts band together to share ideas

ASSUMPTION – A set of small central Illinois school districts has created a professional learning community to allow its teachers to collaborate and exchange ideas.

The community arose after the principals of Central A&M, Moulton and Okaw Valley middle schools took a class together, the Decatur Herald and Review reported. A top concern they discussed was that teachers in small districts don’t have professional development and collaboration opportunities like in larger districts.

Central A&M Middle School Principal Ryan Scott said the answer to that problem was to create the learning community to let teachers get together.

Scott said the goal is to serve as a resource to each other because schools are all “teaching the same thing.”

Okaw Valley Middle School Principal Ross Forlines said the idea was for teachers, including those who are the only ones in a subject at their school, to meet and bounce ideas off each other.

State’s stalled, $700M construction projects hit colleges

SPRINGFIELD – The state’s shutdown of building projects is being felt most at its colleges and universities.

An Associated Press analysis of state records shows Gov. Bruce Rauner’s order to stop work affected 218 jobs worth $707 million.

More than 65 percent of that money – $463 million – is tied up in 81 projects at 27 colleges and universities. Educators have scrambled for alternate space.

The projects remain idle because there’s no budget agreement.

CHICAGO – Chicago police say a candle lit at a memorial honoring a slain 9-year-old Chicago boy ignited a fire that destroyed the memorial and damaged a nearby garage. However, Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Walter Schroeder says the early Sunday blaze remains under investigation.

Premature burial delays funeral for family’s matriarch

CHICAGO – A planned Chicago funeral didn’t take place Saturday because the person to be remembered already had been buried.

WBBM-TV reported the family of Ella Mae Rutledge was at Leak and Sons Funeral Home to approve the body for visitation when family members determined the body they were viewing couldn’t be their mother.

Monique Williams said the deceased woman had long fingernails, not short like her mothers.

And when she pulled away the wig on the woman, she saw black hair, not the gray of her mother’s.

Williams said after Leak representatives showed her three other bodies, it was determined her mother already had been buried Friday by another family.

Rutledge’s body was exhumed and returned to the funeral home.

WASHINGTON – Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Sunday that he’s facing an unprecedented level of scrutiny about the veracity of his life story and questioned whether the issues dogging him over his autobiography are important to the nation’s search for the next president.

“Every single day, every other day or every week, you know, they’re going to come out with, ‘Well, you said this when you were 13,’ ” the retired neurosurgeon said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

“The whole point is to distract the populace, to distract me,” Carson added. “If you’ve got a real scandal, if you’ve got something that’s really important, let’s talk about that.”

2nd train derails in Wis., spills crude oil

WATERTOWN, Wis. – A Canadian Pacific Railway train carrying crude oil derailed Sunday and prompted some evacuations in Wisconsin, the second day in a row a freight train derailed in the state.

The eastbound CP train derailed about 2 p.m. in Watertown, in the southeastern part of the state.

The railroad said at least 10 cars derailed, and some were leaking.

No fires or injuries were reported. CP was sending teams to the site.

Federal investigators and hazardous material specialists are on their way to the scene, the

Federal Railroad Administration said in a tweet.

Residents of about 35 homes were asked to evacuate around 4 p.m., said Donna Haugom, director of the Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management.

On Saturday, a freight train derailed near Alma in western Wisconsin, spilling thousands of gallons of ethanol. BNSF Railway said crews continued Sunday to transfer ethanol from the derailed cars and get the cars back on the tracks.

JOHANNESBURG – The eight suspected poachers stood under a tree, apparently unaware they were being tracked by 10 rangers from Congo’s Garamba National Park. But as the rangers approached, gunfire rang out from the tall grass nearby, where other heavily armed men were hidden. The dragnet swiftly turned into a desperate fight for survival.

The shootout last month, in which three rangers and a Congolese army colonel were killed, highlights the challenge of protecting parks in a part of Africa plagued for decades by insurgencies, civil war, refugee flows and weak governments. It shows how some conservation efforts resemble a kind of guerrilla warfare in which rangers and soldiers stalk – and are stalked by – poachers who are slaughtering Africa’s elephants and other wildlife.

World Bank: Climate change could result in 100 million poor

By KARL RITTER The Associated Press STOCKHOLM – Climate change could push more than 100 million people into extreme poverty by 2030 by disrupting agriculture and fueling the spread of malaria and other diseases, the World Bank said in a report Sunday.

Released just weeks ahead of a U.N. climate summit in Paris, the report highlighted how the impact of global warming is borne unevenly, with the world’s poor woefully unprepared to deal with climate shocks such as rising seas or severe droughts.

“They have fewer resources and receive less support from family, community, the financial system, and even social safety nets to prevent, cope and adapt,” the Washington-based World Bank said.

How to help poor countries – and poor communities within countries – deal with climate change is one of the crunch issues in talks on a global climate accord that’s supposed to be adopted next month in Paris.

Those who say that rich countries aren’t doing enough to help the poor said the report added emphasis to demands for billions of dollars in so-called climate finance to developing countries.

“The statistics in the World Bank report are suitably shocking and I hope they force world leaders to sit up and take notice,” said Mohamed Adow of Christian Aid. “The Paris deal needs to support the poor and vulnerable communities to cope with unavoidable climate crises better, and to be more resilient to a changed climate.”

“Absent such good development, climate change could result in an additional 100 million people living in extreme poverty by 2030,” the report said.

Stephane Hallegatte, one of the authors, told The Associated Press that one of the unique features of the report was that instead of analyzing the macro-economic impact of climate change it was based in part on surveys of 1.4 million people in 92 countries.

“When we ask people why they fall into poverty there are three major factors,” he said. “Agricultural shocks, including an increase in food prices; natural disasters such as

floods, droughts, storms; and health issues, including malaria, diarrhea.”

The report referred to studies showing climate change could result in global crop yield losses as large as 5 percent by 2030 and 30 percent by 2080. It also referenced studies showing warming temperatures could increase the number of people at risk for malaria by 150 million.

Hallegatte said the “hotspots” for climate impacts on poor people were sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

The U.S. and other countries have collectively pledged to scale up climate financing to developed countries to $100 billion annually by 2020 to help them adapt to climate change and reduce their emissions.

Developing countries are calling for commitments beyond 2020 in the Paris agreement but rich nations are reluctant to make firm promises, in part due to budget uncertainties.

A recent report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development estimated climate finance flows to developing countries reached $62 billion in 2014.

The campus in Columbia is about 120 miles west of Ferguson, where tensions erupted over the shooting death of unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown last year by a white police officer.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Student protests over racial incidents on the University of Missouri campus escalated over the weekend when at least 30 black football players announced they will not participate in team activities until the school’s president is removed.

President Tim Wolfe gave no indication he has any intention of stepping down, but agreed in a statement Sunday that “change is needed” and said the university is working to draw up a plan by April to promote diversity and tolerance.

For months, black student groups have complained of racial slurs and other slights on the overwhelmingly white, 35,000-student campus. Their frustrations flared during the homecoming parade Oct. 10 when black protesters blocked Wolfe’s car and he would not get out and talk to them. They were removed by police.

On Saturday night, black members of the football team joined the outcry.

The athletes did not say explicitly whether they would boycott the team’s three remaining games this season.

The Tigers’ next game is Saturday against BYU at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, and canceling it could cost the school more than $1 million.

“The athletes of color on the University of Missouri football team truly believe ‘Injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere,’ ” the players said in a statement. “We will no longer participate in any football related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students’ experience. WE ARE UNITED!!!!!”

Head football coach Gary Pinkel expressed solidarity with the black players on Twitter by posting a picture of the team and coaches locking arms. The tweet read: “The

Mizzou Family stands as one.

We are united. We are behind our players.”

Practice and other team activities were cancelled on Sunday, Pinkel and Missouri athletic director Mack Rhoades said in a joint statement. The statement linked the return of the protesting football players to the end of a hunger strike by a black graduate student who has vowed to not eat until Wolfe is gone.

“Our focus right now is on the health of Jonathan Butler, the concerns of our student-athletes and working with our community to address this serious issue,” the statement said.

Missouri won the SEC East title in 2013 and 2014 but is unranked this year with a 4-5 record.

The protests at the campus began after the student government president, who is black, said in September that people in a passing pickup truck shouted racial slurs at him. Days before the homecoming parade, members of a black student organization said slurs were hurled at them by an apparently drunken white student.

Also, a swastika drawn in feces was found recently in a dormitory bathroom.

Butler, who participated in the homecoming parade protest, began his hunger strike on Nov. 2 to call attention to racial problems at the state’s flagship university.

Many of the protests have been led by an organization called Concerned Student 1950, which gets its name from the year the university accepted its first black student. Its members besieged Wolfe’s car at homecoming last month, and they have been conducting a sit-in on a campus plaza since last Monday.

The organization has demanded among other things that Wolfe “acknowledge his white male privilege,” that he be removed immediately, and that the school adopt a mandatory racial-awareness program and hire more black faculty

“What he is doing is part of the Joliet Catholic tradition,” Maloney said. “It’s about being a Hilltopper. His effort, hard work, intensity and wearing the same number I wore, I take pride in the type of person he is. His reputation is impeccable, and the way he plays the game, that intensity,

there’s pride in seeing him wearing that same jersey.”

“It made me feel good that he said he wore No. 74 here, and it’s an honor that I am wearing his number,” Witt said. “He said there couldn’t be a better person to wear his number.”

If the Hilltoppers are going to make a run at state championship No. 14, what happens in the trenches will be a key.

It was a major reason JCA had its way with Marian Central, and the line play will be a huge factor in determining whether the Hilltoppers will win their quarterfinal game at Nazareth, which will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Coach Dan Sharp cited the line play after Saturday’s game. He recalled our conversation back in the summer, when he said the line on both sides of the ball will be the key to this team’s success.

Sharp, incidentally, reached a milestone Saturday, not that he is thinking about such things right now.

The victory was his 222nd as a head coach, including his stint at Minooka. That ties him with Phil Acton and the late Gordie Gillespie for third

place among area coaches.

Former Providence coach Matt Senffner had 300 wins; and Morris legend Dan Darlington, now a Bolingbrook assistant, won 228 games.

One aspect of Saturday’s game that Sharp thought was a key to victory was the coin flip.

“We won the flip, and it was big because we were able to defer,” Sharp said. “So we had the wind to start. Jaws [defensive coordinator Jake Jaworski] and his guys were able to force them into punts into that stiff wind. We got good field position and were able to get the good early lead.”

The Hilltoppers were up, 14-0, after about 10 minutes and 27-0 at halftime.

And although both teams had to battle the wind, JCA quarterback Cade Earl apparently did not mind, as he completed 7 of 9 passes for 110 yards.

“Cade threw extremely well in this weather,” Sharp said.

TWO LEFT STANDING

The Joliet area lost a couple more teams over the weekend than we had thought might be the case. Lincoln-Way East had a difficult assignment at Libertyville.

PLAINFIELD – Saturday marked the opening of the boys high school bowling season, and Plainfield South, Plainfield North and Lockport got off and rolling.

North hosted the largest high school Baker tournament in the state with its third annual Baker Kick-Off Classic.

A total of 48 teams participated in the event, which was capped by three area schools named above dominating the competition.

After more than 30 games and eight hours, the tournament came down to Lockport, Plainfield North and Plainfield South battling for the title.

South clinched a berth in the championship match by defeating Lockport in the championship bracket, sending the Porters to the lower bracket to face Plainfield North to determine which would go to the championship match.

North defeated Lockport, 247-189, to earn the right to face South in the title match.

In the double-elimination format, North needed to beat South twice to win the title.

The Tigers won the first match when senior Ryan Carlson doubled in the 10th frame to pull off a two-pin victory.

The championship came down to a single game in which South dominated, winning the championship.

USF’s Pietrzak a man for both seasons

The only negative was the University of St. Francis football team dropping a 28-0 decision at Marian (Ind.) in a game that began at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Pietrzak is in the regular rotation at wide receiver for the Saints. In fact, he leads coach Joe Curry’s team in receiving yardage, average per reception and touchdowns. He has caught 25 for 466 yards, an 18.6 average, and eight touchdowns.

The junior also is in the regular rotation for the USF basketball team. He started Friday night and played 28 minutes, scoring eight points, as coach Ryan Marks’ team began the regular season with an 87-74 victory over Harris-Stowe State at the Sullivan Center.

Less than 14 hours after the basketball game concluded, Pietrzak was in uniform and ready for the kickoff in Indianapolis.

To play football and basketball in the same school year is not unheard of on the collegiate level, but it is rare.

Normally, however, when an athlete does that, he waits for the football season to conclude before he joins his basketball teammates and begins getting into basketball shape.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Pietrzak is a different sort.

He has been practicing both sports regularly and plays both at a high level.

“I’m going to go get changed and ready to go,” Pietrzak said after Friday’s basketball game, which ended shortly after 9 p.m. “People have called me a robot, playing two sports at the same time. But I love playing football and basketball.”

Pietrzak was recruited out of Westmont High School to play football for the Saints.

However, John Baines, the basketball coach at the time, met with Pietrzak about also playing basketball. He redshirted in football as a freshman, and he played basketball that year.

The basketball team generally practices in the afternoon. Pietrzak is there for both. And, he carries a good grade-point average and has been known to help his father in his business when that need arises.

“In coaching, you coach a wide variety of kids,” Marks said. “Jean is so unique in what he does. He never gets tired. We had a exhibition basketball game at Eastern Illinois [last Tuesday] and got home at 1 a.m. He played, and then he was there for football practice at 6 a.m., a few hours later, and he always functions at 100 percent. He is uncanny with his time management.

“When you think about what he does, all you can do is smile and scratch your head.”

Marks said many college coaches do not want two-sport athletes. “But Joe [Curry] and I have a fabulous relationship,” he said. “Jean’s happiness is predicated on being able to play both sports.”

Marks’ opinion, is his humility.

“If you talk to him, you notice there is a certain naivety,” he said. “He doesn’t even see what he is doing as anything special.”

Marks said Pietrzak has missed a little bit of basketball practice time because of football commitments, “but it doesn’t feel like it. He always is ready.”

It was with Pietrzak in

mind that Marks set up the basketball schedule as he did.

The Saints will participate in a tournament in Las Vegas this weekend, and Pietrzak will not be there because the football team will play its final home game Saturday against Olivet Nazarene. Those are the only basketball games he will miss.

“I tried to schedule it specifically that we would not play on Saturday [football game

day] early in the season,” Marks said. “The tournament will be the only time we have a Saturday game through the first couple rounds of the playoffs, in the event the football team makes the playoffs.”

Pietrzak said he enjoys the physicality of both sports.

“In football, everyone sees the big hits,” he said. “In basketball, there are lots of things that go on that you do not see.

It’s physical, but I’m not going to complain about that.”

Pietrzak also enjoys the camaraderie on both teams.

“This year’s football team is amazing,” he said. “It’s a hundred dudes who really are like a family, where everybody knows everybody.”

Pietrzak this season is playing the 3 (small forward) in basketball. When newcomer Landus Anderson recovers from an eye injury, he will be in the mix at that spot, as well.

Regardless, the Saints will go 10 or 11 deep most nights, and Pietrzak will be in the rotation. Whether it’s on the basketball court or the football field, he is doing what he loves.

The No. 1 matchup in the Bears’ Monday prime-time meeting with the San Diego Chargers jumps off the page like Joakim Noah standing in a classroom full of kindergartners.

San Diego is No. 1 in the NFL in total offense and first throwing the football but 29th running the ball. Meanwhile, the Bears are ninth in total defense, 29th defending the run and – wait for it, here comes the mystery stat – fourth in the NFL defending the pass.

Trust me, I triple-checked it. The Bears are fourth against the pass even though they’re 20th in quarterback sack percentage, 29th in thirddown conversion percentage and 29th in points allowed.

Are the Bears just highly ranked against the pass because their run defense is so sketchy?

Regardless, although the Chargers lost the NFL’s second-leading receiver for the season last week, Keenan Allen (67 catches), quarterback Philip Rivers is playing at an elite level; and in Malcolm Floyd, Antonio Gates, Danny Woodhead and Stevie Johnson, Rivers will have plenty of targets to challenge the Bears’ secondary. If Ladarius Green (ankle) plays, that’s another.

That San Diego could be without its two best offensive linemen in King Dunlap and Orlando Franklin certainly

Floyd, Gates and Green are all 6-foot-5 or taller and 225 pounds or bigger, creating huge mismatches for them in coverage against the Bears’ secondary and linebackers, and even Johnson is 6-2, 210.

If the Bears’ front seven cannot make Rivers uncomfortable in the pocket and put him on his back a number of times, it is difficult to envision them winning this football game.

San Diego is far from scary on defense, ranking 20th in total defense, 27th against the run and 13th against the pass but 28th in average yards a pass play.

This is a game the Bears would love to have running back Matt Forte locked and loaded for.

He won’t be.

The key to the Bears’ offense is how much of Forte’s load that rookie Jeremy Langford can pick up in his first start. And if he can’t carry enough of it, is this the game where offensive coordinator Adam Gase will have to turn Jay Cutler loose, play bombs-

away and hope Cutler avoids the kinds of throws that have gotten him in trouble in the past?

The key could be the Chargers’ lone perennial Pro Bowler on defense, safety Eric Weddle, who has missed the past two games with a groin problem but did practice some this week.

Cutler describes the challenge like this: “They present problems. They’re gonna show a lot of different looks.

“They’re gonna bring the blitz from a lot of different angles if [Weddle] is playing.

He’s all over the field. He’s at the line of scrimmage, he’s in the A gap, he’s buzzing everywhere. So you’ve got to be aware of him.”

I’m not a point-spread guy, but here’s an interesting note: Eighteen of the Bears’ past 25 games on the road have gone over the total.

This one is going to be a shootout, possibly Cutler’s first chance this year to swap paint with one of the game’s top gunslingers.

This is the quarterbacks’ game.

The triggerman who protects the ball best and stays upright the most is going to lead his team to victory.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers: The Bears’ defense must find a way to slow Rivers and San Diego’s top-ranked passing offense, and the pass rush needs to awaken.

Rivers is not mobile, but he has a quick release and good footwork in the pocket to avoid pressure.

He’s been hit 60 times, but sacked only 19 times, as the Chargers are 15th in the league in sacks per pass attempt. Even with injuries up front – Rivers will be without left tackle King Dunlap on Monday night – the Chargers have allowed one sack in each of the past two games. Bears players not named Pernell McPhee have not been effective rushing the quarterback. McPhee has 11 of the team’s 32 QB hits and five of the 12 sacks. Jarvis Jenkins flashed early in

Cutler protects the football. He’s done a good job of it this season; and if this is a game for the offenses to pile up points, he can’t afford any giveaways. If Jeremy Langford gets going against a bad Chargers run defense, that should make things easier for Cutler. In addition to rattling and limiting Rivers, the Bears can win if they take advantage of potentially the only game in which they have an edge on special teams.

The Chargers will win if … :

Rivers takes advantage of a Bears secondary that has been exposed late in losses to Detroit and Minnesota.

That’ll require some help from his makeshift offensive line as well as a complement in Melvin Gordon. If the Chargers’ “D” gets off the field on third down and forces a Cutler turnover or two, that’ll go a long way in getting them back in the win column.

Johnson passes Keselowski late for Texas win

By STEPHEN HAWKINS The Associated Press FORT WORTH, Texas – Jimmie Johnson raced to his fourth consecutive Texas fall victory, overcoming Brad Keselowski’s dominating Chase-contending car with three laps to go Sunday.

Keselowski led a track-record 312 of 334 laps after starting off the pole. He worked hard to hold on to the lead after the final restart with 18 laps left in a race he felt he needed to win to get one of the four spots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship finale in two weeks.

“I’m not sure exactly how

to feel about it at the moment,” Keselowski said.

With the already-eliminated Johnson winning, three spots are still up for grabs at Phoenix, the last race before the Nov. 22 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The only championship contender Jimmie set is retiring Johnson four-time champion Jeff Gordon, the Martinsville winner last week and Johnson’s teammate at Hendrick Motorsports.

Kyle Busch leads the points race for at least two of

the spots, ahead of defending Chase champion Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. Carl Edwards is next, followed

by Keselowski, Kurt Busch and Joey Logano.

Johnson led only six laps to get his fifth win of the season, his first in 20 starts. The No. 48 Chevrolet also won the spring race at Texas, and won the previous three fall races at the high-banked, 1½-mile track.

After the final restart, Keselowski and Truex were sideby-side, and even bumped at one point before Truex went in front very briefly.

Keselowski almost as quickly got back in front, and Johnson went charging past

Truex as well into second place and right on the leader’s tail. Truex lost his power steering in those closing laps.

Johnson kept pushing and, on the backstretch on lap 331, he went to the bottom and was able to get around for the lead.

Johnson went on to win by more than a second.

“I did everything I could to hold him off, but he was way faster that last run,” Keselowski said. “As I sit right now, and maybe I’ll change my mind, I don’t know what I would have done differently, or could have done differently.”

Harvick finished third, even after he twice had to

come in to replace punctured tires after running over something on the track, and having to drive one-handed for a long stretch when he was having to hold on to the shifter to keep his car from popping out of gear.

Logano, Keselowski’s teammate at Team Penske, got knocked from first to last among the eight championship contenders after being intentionally wrecked by Matt Kenseth at Martinsville a week ago. Logano’s title shot took another huge hit when he had a blown tire after only 10 laps at Texas, where he finished 66 laps back in 40th place.

Newton shines as Panthers defeat Packers, stay perfect The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cam Newton threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score Sunday, and the Carolina Panthers took an important step toward securing home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a 37-29 win over the Green Bay Packers.

Newton completed 15 of 30 passes for 297 yards and ran for 57 yards on nine carries in one of the better games of his fiveyear NFL career.

The Panthers (8-0) extended their regular-season win streak to 12 and put themselves in terrific shape in the NFC standings, where every other team has at least two losses.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 369 yards and four touchdowns and led a furious fourth-quarter comeback from 23 points down, but couldn’t complete it.

Linebacker Thomas Davis intercepted Rodgers on a fourthand-goal pass at the Carolina 3 with 1:54 left.

The Packers (6-2) have lost back-to-back.

STEELERS 38, RAIDERS 35: In Pittsburgh, Chris Boswell hit an 18-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to lift the Steelers after Ben Roethlisberger left with a potentially serious left foot injury.

The Steelers (5-4) survived after Roethlisberger exited midway through the fourth quarter after getting sacked

by Aldon Smith. Replacement Landry Jones found Antonio Brown for a 57-yard reception on Pittsburgh’s final drive to set up Boswell’s winning kick.

Derek Carr threw for 301 yards with four touchdowns and an interception for the Raiders (4-4).

COLTS 27, BRONCOS 24: In Indianapolis, Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes and Adam Vinatieri made a tie-breaking 55-yard field goal with 6:13 to play. The Colts (45) ended a three-game losing streak and stayed atop the AFC South by ruining Peyton Manning’s return to Indy. It was their first win outside the division.

Denver (7-1) was the only unbeaten team to lose this weekend.

PATRIOTS 27, REDSKINS 10: At Foxborough, Massachusetts, Julian Edelman and LeGarrette Blount scored touchdowns before the Redskins ran their second play.

Tom Brady completed 26 of 39 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, including an 8-yarder to Edelman on the opening drive. New England (80) then pulled off a surprise onside kick, but that drive stalled.

Washington (3-5) managed 15 total yards in the first quarter. New England has scored in 31 straight quarters – every one this season except the first quarter of the first game.

TITANS 34, SAINTS 28, OT: At New Orleans, Tennessee rookie Marcus Mariota came back from his recent injury to pass for 371 yards and four touchdowns, including a 5-yard scoring pass to Anthony Fasano in overtime, and the Titans snapped a six-game skid.

The Saints (4-5) – who had won three in a row – led, 21-10, but could not put away the Titans (2-6), who turned in a feisty performance in their first game since coach Ken Whisenhunt was fired and replaced by Mike Mularkey.

VIKINGS 21, RAMS 18, OT: In Minneapolis, Adrian Peterson rushed for 125 yards on 29 carries, helping set up Blair Walsh’s 40-yard field goal in overtime after Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater left with a concussion early in the fourth quarter.

In a predictably grind-it-out game between similarly constructed teams, the Vikings (62) ended Todd Gurley’s streak of games with 125-plus yards rushing at four. Gurley gained 89 yards and a touchdown on 24 attempts for the Rams (44), who received the overtime

kickoff but went three-and-out.

BILLS 33, DOLPHINS 17: At Orchard Park, New York, Sammy Watkins had a career-best performance in leading the Bills.

He made eight catches for 168 yards and a 44-yard touchdown that broke open the game late in the third quarter. Rookie running back Karlos Williams scored twice, and LeSean McCoy also scored on a 48-yard run.

Buffalo (4-4), coming out of its bye week, won for the first time in four home games.

The Dolphins (3-5) continued to regress. Coming off a 36-7 loss to New England, Miami has lost two straight since winning its first two games when interim coach Dan Campbell took over after Joe Philbin was fired.

49ERS 17, FALCONS 16: At Santa Clara, California, Blaine Gabbert threw a pair of second-quarter touchdown passes to Garrett Celek for the undermanned 49ers.

The 49ers (3-6) head into the bye on a winning note after a week of change.

Making his first start in more than two years, Gabbert didn’t take a sack behind an offensive line that has faced heavy scrutiny all year. Celek made TD catches of 1 and 11 yards to give him three on the year and San Francisco’s stout

defense flustered Atlanta (63) and Matt Ryan despite the patchwork use of backups because of a rash of injuries.

JETS 28, JAGUARS 23: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes while playing with a torn ligament in his left thumb, Chris Ivory ran for two scores, and the Jets took advantage of late mistakes by the Jaguars (2-6).

Brandon Marshall had a 20-yard TD catch after the Jets (5-3) recovered a muffed punt late in the fourth quarter, helping New York end a two-game skid in a messy performance by both sides.

GIANTS 32, BUCCANEERS 18: In Tampa, Florida, Eli Manning threw for two touchdowns, helping the first-place New York Giants rebound from last week’s debacle at New Orleans.

Josh Brown booted four field goals for the Giants (5-4), including fourth-quarter kicks of 53 and 44 yards that gave New York some breathing room after the Bucs (3-5) pulled within two points.

The Giants’ defense, bolstered by the return of Jason Pierre-Paul, did its part by keeping the Jameis Winston-led Tampa Bay offense out of the end zone until the rookie scrambled 10 yards for a TD that made it 20-18 with 9:25 remaining.

PLAINFIELD – Two classes of Troy Community School District 30-C fifth-graders took on a service project in October making a “Doggie Starter Kit” for Hopeful Tails Animal Rescue in Joliet.

The students raised money to buy the items in the kit, which included a tug toy made by the students, chew toys, a leash and collar, American-made treats, a student-made brochure on how to care for a dog and two large bags of dog food, among other items. The kit will be used by the rescue center in a raffle to help with older dog adoptions.

The project was presented by students in William B. Orenic Intermediate School’s Citizenship Through Community Service classes, taught by Allison Acevedo.

During their field trip to the rescue center, the students also donated dog blankets, leashes and collars, tennis balls and a basket of 50 pull toys they made themselves from T-shirts. While there, the students also played with and walked the dogs, fed them, gave them a bath and learned about Hopeful Tails.

It is so easy to be reckless

Luc de Clapiers, an 18th-century French essayist, said, “The most absurd and reckless aspirations have sometimes led to extraordinary success.”

That is true. Even at the bridge table, a reckless line of play can work out well, when the cards are favorably distributed. However, in newspaper columns and classes, recklessness is costly.

In this deal, for example, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads the heart jack to dummy’s queen?

North’s sequence showed game-forcing values, at least one fourcard major and five-plus clubs. (Probably East did well not to overcall two spades. North would have doubled, and the contract could have been defeated by two tricks. But if North-South had still ended in three no-trump, a spade lead would have been lethal. Also, East might have doubled three no-trump, which would have asked for an unusual lead. Typically, West would have led his shorter major.)

South starts with five top tricks: two spades and three hearts. It looks easy to play on diamonds to get those four extra winners. But if the defender with the ace wins the second round of the suit and switches to spades, declarer probably won’t see his hand again until it is too late.

Instead, South should lead a club at trick two. Suppose East wins and shifts to the spade queen. Now declarer must win in the dummy and lead a diamond – not a reckless club. If East takes this trick, South gets two spades, three hearts and four diamonds. If East ducks, South wins in his hand, cashes the heart ace, then leads his club queen to take two spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs.

As your immune system attacks these particles, it can also attack surrounding bone and weaken it. This may loosen the bone’s connection to the implant.

I’m not minimizing any of the possible complications of hip surgery.

But the point is that they are very infrequent.

Look for a surgeon who performs lots of hip replacements and has a fine reputation.

With such a surgeon, the likelihood of any complication is even less. I had no complications.

In fact, looking back on it, my only regret about having hip replacement surgery is that I waited so long to have it done!

Should I be?

Dear Reader: I get a lot of questions about hip replacement surgery, and I’m in a good position to answer them: I had a hip replacement about a decade ago.

Before I give a more detailed answer, let me cut to the chase: The benefits of hip replacement surgery greatly outweigh the risks.

First, the basics.

Your hip is a ball in a socket joint: The big bone in the top part of your leg has a top that’s shaped like a ball, and your pelvic bone has a cup into which the ball fits.

Hip replacement surgery involves replacing the bony ball and socket with an artificial device made of metal or ceramic.

As with every type of surgery, there can be complications. Fortunately, they are very unusual.

So what can go wrong?

• BLOOD CLOTS. These can form in the veins of the legs, shake loose, and travel to your lungs. This can be a serious complication. However, various treatments have greatly reduced this risk.

• INFECTION. Your implant can become infected. If you feel new pain in the implanted hip, particularly if you also feel sick and have a fever, seek immediate treatment.

• DISLOCATION. In the weeks after your hip replacement, take great care to keep from dislocating your implant before the surrounding tissues have healed enough to hold it in

Sandra and Kate were completely dissimilar and not close. Even Sandra said, “Well, at least I had two good days of vacation.” Should the family have waited? –

When death happens out of the blue, people sometimes react emotionally rather than rationally, which may be why the relative called immediately.

I agree with the friends who said the sad news could have been conveyed on the last day of the trip. Had Sandra been told immediately upon her return home, she might have been grateful.

On the other hand, she also might have been furious, saying, “How could you keep this from me!?”

That said, in my opinion it would have been kinder to let Sandra and her husband enjoy their holiday, since it was already too late to rush to the sister’s bedside.

Dear Abby: My husband, who has a beautiful head of dark curly hair, decided to let it grow.

It is now about halfway down his back.

Sometimes he braids it or pulls it into a ponytail.

Other times he wears it down and it falls loose. The problem is, I can’t bear to look at him.

He has always been clean-cut and had short hair.

But as time has gone on and many of his friends have begun losing their hair, he says he wants to grow his out while he can.

I know that in the grand scheme of life, hair shouldn’t be an issue, but I can’t seem to get past this. I think it’s because of the way he used to look.

I can’t talk to him about it because he really likes his hair.
