Man barricades himself in residence Dirkans charged with restraint, battery, assault

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An armed man barricaded himself for six hours Thursday in a Joliet residence.

Chandel Dirkans, 33, of Joliet is charged with unlawful restraint, domestic battery and criminal Chandel Dirkans sexual assault.

Capt. Les O’Connor said police were called about 1 p.m. to a house in the 600 block of Grant Avenue.

“We were called in reference to a criminal sexual assault involving a female juvenile,” O’Connor said.

The teen and her parents had left the area but the sus-

pect – Dirkans – still was at the residence when police arrived, O’Connor said.

Dirkans told officers he was armed with a gun and would harm himself, according to O’Connor. Police radio calls indicated officers saw Dirkans holding a gun to his head.

Police cordoned off the surrounding blocks and evacuated nearby homes. Crisis negotiators and SWAT team officers were at the scene.

O’Connor said Dirkans did not communicate with police for some time after refusing to cooperate. When conversations resumed, family members including his sister came to speak with him about 5:40 p.m.

“He’s in there by himself, we’ll just wait it out and hope to resolve this peacefully,” O’Connor said.

Dirkans came out and surrendered at 7:25 p.m. Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said Dirkans would be taken to a local hospital because he injured his hand punching out a window earlier in the afternoon.

Chief Brian Benton said Dirkans also would be examined for any injuries from a beanbag round SWAT officers fired when negotiators had him come to an exposed position during negotiations.

Police said Dirkans currently is on parole for burglary.

Dirkans also was charged Thursday with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon after police found a gun while searching the home, according to Deputy Chief Al Roechner.

McFarland inquiry extends to Forest Preserve District of Will County

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Lawyers looking into councilman Jim McFarland’s use of city envelopes for political mailings also have contacted his former employer, the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

McFarland on Oct. 22 gave two-week notice to the For- Jim e s t P r e s e r v e McFarland District that he was leaving his job as community partnerships manager.

McFarland said he was leaving to develop a communications and marketing business he already had started. His last day was Wednesday.

Forest Preserve District Executive Director Marcy DeMauro said the district has heard from both the city of Joliet and the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“We’re just cooperating

if asked to do so,” DeMauro said. “No one at our end has initiated contact with anyone. We have only responded to contact made to us.”

She would not comment on the discussions.

McFarland’s attorney, George Lenard, also would not discuss his conversations with the city and forest preserve.

“All I can say is I’ve been retained as his attorney,” Lenard said. “I’ve been in contact with the city and the forest preserve.”

McFarland has acknowledged using city envelopes to promote a Facebook page he started for lost pets and to announce a pancake breakfast for veterans that was being paid for by his political committee. He said he did so “inadvertently.”

Meanwhile, the city has not turned over materials needed to launch an investigation despite issuing a news release Monday evening stating the matter had been

turned over to the state’s attorney.

“Neither the city nor the forest preserve has referred anything to us,” said Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office. “We had a conversation, but they have not formally referred anything to us.”

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said Thursday the news release was written after a closed session while media was waiting with questions about the McFarland matter. The news release should have said the matter “is going to be turned over” to the state’s attorney, Shanahan said.

Shanahan said documents probably will be turned over to the state’s attorney next week, but he wants to first make sure the city has copies of everything.

Shanahan said he has talked with the Forest Preserve District regarding the envelope investigation but would not elaborate.

District 86 officials had a soft lockdown at three schools: Keith Elementary, Woodland Elementary and Washington Junior High School and Academy.

The lockdown went from about 2 to 3:45 p.m., said Sandy Zalewski, District 86 spokeswoman.

All the doors to the buildings were locked and no one could leave or enter them, she said. Normal classroom activities continued.

She also said students at several other schools whose bus routes went to the area where the incident was occurring were held at those schools until 3:45 p.m.

Parents were notified students would be arriving home late.

New Plainfield fire training buildings adapt to versatile needs

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Smoke billowed Tuesday out of a building behind the Plainfield Fire Protection District headquarters as firefighting crews geared up to enter and look for survivors.

Lt. Andy Scott worked with another firefighter to bust open a jammed door to the building and conduct a search for people on the first floor before heading to the second.

Firefighters found a victim on the second floor and radioed the information back to command. But they received a second order that the stairs had collapsed. So Scott and other firefighters set up a ladder rescue from a second-floor balcony.

The victim was really a beanbag dummy, the smoke was fake and the Plainfield firefighters were conducting one of the first training exercises in the fire district’s two new fire training buildings.

The buildings were constructed during the summer, and fire officials are optimistic about their capabilities.

“This is a solid foundation for the beginning of many things,” Chief Dave Riddle said.

Multifaceted buildings

The two fire training buildings look like a pair of black, generic structures. But inside, they have been designed to mimic real-life conditions.

The south building is a burn structure. Included are an attached garage, basement escape wells and other characteristics of single-family homes, senior living communities and commercial buildings unique to Plainfield.

The original plan was to have one building to prevent soot contamination to rescue equipment, Deputy Chief Jon

Stratton said.

Lt. John Votteler, a primary designer of the buildings, said the buildings have the versatility to adapt to any type of training with adjustable wall paneling.

“It’s like a kit: You get a

bunch of Legos and you kind of throw them together and see what you get, fit your needs in it,” Votteler said.

The cost for the buildings and necessary infrastructure was budgeted for a total of $1.17 million, with the build-

ings’ cost specifically targeted at $750,000. Riddle said the buildings ended up costing about $500,000.

“We’re very cognizant of our fiscal responsibilities,” Riddle said.

Training benefits

Firefighters involved with the exercise Tuesday noticed the advantages of training in a building designed for that purpose.

Training previously was done with burns in buildings that were condemned for demolition.

Fairmont community fights back against highway plans

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – About three dozen from the Fairmont community clashed with project leaders Thursday night over how a proposed new highway cuts through the heart of the town – all because of an endangered dragonfly.

“You’re destroying a community that’s growing,” De Harris, of Fairmont, told officials during an informational meeting at the Will County Office Building in Joliet. “Children. Families. Humans.”

The meeting centered around a long-sought plan to build a highway linking Caton Farm and Bruce roads to a new bridge over the Des Plaines River.

The selected route – known as the Middle Alignment – creates a 12-mile, four-lane road connecting Caton Farm Road at Route 30 to 159th Street and

Cedar Road in Homer Township.

A new bridge would continue access southeast to Oak Avenue in Fairmont to avoid the habitat of the endangered Hines’ Emerald Dragonfly and the veer back north to Bruce Road and east to I-355.

Michael J. Matkovic, project manager with Christopher B. Burke Engineering, said many alternatives were considered over several years.

Ultimately, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife restricted use of another viable option, Bruce Road, because of the dragonfly’s habitat.

“Here’s the reality, and this is the part of the job that I hate the most. If you have a project that’s going through the federal process, you have two options,” Matkovic said.

“If one is going through a dedicated habitat of the Hines’ Emerald Dragonfly and the other is going through a home, then

it’s going to go through that home.”

Supporters say the eastwest route is needed to alleviate traffic congestion, while opponents Thursday said the route’s selection disproportionately displaces and affects a minority-heavy community of Fairmont.

George Malone, of Fairmont, said the route cuts straight through farmland just south of Oak Avenue.

“Let me say this. They put that road in, it’s going to cut off the area south of [Oak Avenue]. You’ve only got about four blocks and then you’re on the Joliet line. It’s going to separate them from Lockport.

It’s going to be like a no man’s land,” Malone said, frustrated.

“What’s the need for it? It’s not needed for the community itself.”

Matkovic said there has been a need for a new river crossing in the area since the

1970s. Building a new eastwest corridor would relieve traffic congestion in the area, including along the Ninth Street bridge in downtown Lockport.

Since the plan was selected more than six years ago, there has been some turnover within the committee that initially approved it and opposition against the selected route has grown.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh, told residents the county “wants to work closely” with community members during the design phase to ensure the road is built to spur business development – which is badly needed in the economically depressed town of about 2,500.

“Let’s make this positive.

We all want economic development and opportunities,” Palmer said.

Matkovic said he wants the

community to be heavily involved, noting bike paths, sidewalks and landscaping could be part of the design.

“It’s good to get those wants and needs,” he said.

Terry Broadhurst, who owns property in Fairmont, said erecting noise walls is one potential component to the plan that could easily deconstruct any hopes of economic development in the community.

But he and residents said they hate the idea of dealing with noise and added traffic.

“We’ve got five blocks of road. For five blocks of road, you’re disrupting a whole community. Disrupting children. A school. Families that have been here for multi-generations,” Broadhurst said.

The meeting was organized Thursday by County Board members Annette Park, R-Crest Hill, and Lauren Staley-Ferry, D-Joliet.

Construction manager sought for Will County courthouse project

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Although funding sources are not yet finalized for Will County’s planned courthouse project, County Executive Larry Walsh Sr.’s deputy chief of staff plans to seek a construction manager to oversee the major capital project.

The construction manager would oversee the design and construction phases of the courthouse project, said Dave Tkac, who is finalizing request-for-qualification documents to issue in early December.

Tkac said the RFQ process will ensure the county gets the most qualified applicant for the job – a firm that specializes in judicial facility design.

“We’re hoping to garner

national attention and responses,” Tkac said.

Conversations surrounding a new courthouse have picked up during the past year, because of the county’s growing population, coupled with a lack of sufficient space and security in the existing judicial facility, built in 1969.

County officials have pegged the First Midwest Bank site at Ottawa and Jefferson streets, which the county bought last year, as a potential location for a new courthouse.

Initial costs for a new courthouse planned for downtown Joliet were estimated at $140 million to $200 million, but Tkac said Thursday he thinks the price tag will be closer to a maximum of $150 million.

It’s important to find a construction manager early on,

Tkac said, because the design phase likely will take a minimum of 18 months. A ground-

breaking is expected in 2018 with a two- to three-year timeline for completion.

The county hired the Darien-based firm Wight & Company last year to complete the preliminary programming work for the project.

Tkac said the county’s $1.3 million contract with Wight & Company includes the option to extend it so Wight may continue on as the construction manager. But that has yet to be determined.

The new courthouse will include additional courtrooms, jury rooms, a law library, new office space for the State’s Attorney’s Office and increased space for other offices within the judicial system. Satellite courthouses likely will be built in the northern portions of the county.

NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way High School District 210 students finished a widespread fundraiser to help a nonprofit that is fighting blood cancers.

Students across all four Lincoln-Way schools participated in Pennies for Patients, in which they collected coins for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The nonprofit is dedicated to funding blood cancer research and ensuring blood cancer patients have access to treatment.

“It is one of our most successful fundraisers that we’ve been doing here at Lincoln-Way,“ said Aimee Feehery, district director of instruction. “We are very, very proud of our students to give back … they always step up and do a great job. They always seem to top the previ-

She said Pennies for Patients is one of the “widest-reaching fundraisers” the district does throughout the school year.

Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the nation, according to Americans for Common Cents.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has invested more than $1 billion in research to advance therapies that save lives, according to its website. The organization’s grants have funded

many advances in treatment and some therapies first approved for blood cancers are helping patients with other types of cancers and serious diseases.

The fundraiser recently ended and each school is counting the funds raised.

Feehery said Lincoln-Way Central High School alone raised more than $1,200.

Last year, students across the district raised more than $8,000 by collecting change during their lunch hours, district officials said in a news release.

Feehery said district officials believe the district has contributed more than $100,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the more than a decade the district has participated in the fundraiser.

“The students buy into this because everyone has been affected by cancer in some capacity,” Feehery said.

PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield South high school student is gathering new stuffed animals for children in the hospital.

Caley Trepac, a Plainfield South senior student, wants to help children in hospitals feel less lonely, Plainfield School District 202 officials said in a news release.

Trepac is building an ark full of stuffed animals to donate to children at Rush University Medical Center and John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County to ease their loneliness.

Trepac is organizing Stuffapawlooza: A Beary Special Cause from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

JOLIET – Santa comes Friday to the Louis Joliet Mall, getting the holiday season off to an early start with the help of drummers and poms from Plainfield high schools.

The mall released its holiday schedule, which starts with Santa’s first visit from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The schedule includes Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping hours. The mall will be open 6 p.m. to midnight on Thanksgiving. On Black Friday, stores will be open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

If Nov. 6 seems early for Santa, mall Manager Eric Loula said early November has become a “typical” time for Santa’s arrival at the mall.

Loula expects a good showing for Santa.

The Plainfield East High School drum line and Plainfield South High School poms team will be there to welcome Santa. The Dave Rudolph Show will provide children’s entertainment.

Loula said the mall will have a couple of new stores since last Christmas. Maurice’s clothing store opened in June. The Athlete’s Foot, already in the mall, is in the process of opening a larger store.

JOLIET – Will County and Lewis University have teamed up to offer residents an opportunity to compost jack-o-lanterns instead of sending them to the landfill by hosting the second annual Pumpkin Pitch.

Once again, it promises to be a fun-filled event with prizes from the University of Illinois Extension Office and the Will County Farm Bureau, according to a news release from the county.

Each participant will get a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of four $25 gift certificates donated by Heroes West Sports Grill.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Friday and Saturday in the front parking area of Lewis University.

Only naked pumpkins will be accepted; no candles, bags or boxes. Investigations Division Chief Randy Palmer said Richards High School staff contacted police Oct. 30 after the girl saw a man taking pictures with a cellphone while she was changing.

The Student –Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will utilize the “Its On Us” campaign to raise awareness, support survivors and work to prevent sexual misconduct on university campuses across the country. “It’s On Us” is an effort to include students and all members of the college community to put an end to sexual assault. “It’s On Us” was launched last April as part of the White House Task Force To Protect Students From Sexual Assault on college and university campuses. The main goals of the campaign, according to a White House press release, are to identify the scope of the problem, engage men in the discussion, help schools respond to assaults effectively and improve the federal government’s enforcement efforts.

JOLIET – A man pleaded guilty Thursday to drug-induced homicide in the fatal heroin overdose of a National Guardsman three years ago.

Luis M. Carbajal, 26, was sentenced to six years in prison by Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak for delivering $30 worth of heroin to a small gathering of friends Jan. 16, 2012.

Two sisters who lived in the 400 block of East Eighth Street in Lockport returned home to find Timothy M. Bottorff, 21, had overdosed, Will County assistant state’s attorney Mike Knick said.

The women first told investigators they’d been using cold medicine and later claimed they were taking cocaine before admitting to using heroin, according to Knick. Carbajal had been contacted via text message to make a delivery.

Bottorff was a Plainfield Central High School graduate who was attending the University of Dubuque. He also was an Iowa National Guard infantry soldier whose obituary mentioned he was close to his family and enjoyed playing computer games.

Knick said Bottorff’s parents supported the plea deal.

Carbajal stood with defense attorney Neil Patel and quietly answered “Yes, ma’am”

and “No, ma’am” to Bertani-Tomczak’s questions before he made a statement.

“I just want to apologize [to] everyone involved. I’m sorry for their loss,” Carbajal said. “I just want to move on.”

Two months after Bottorff’s death, Carbajal put on a pair of brass knuckles and demanded a man’s iPhone in Romeoville’s Westlake Park, according to previous reports.

He was serving a three-year sentence for robbery when toxicology tests were completed and he was charged in the Lockport case.

Deanthony E. Williamson, 25, of Joliet received the maximum prison sentence from Deanthony E. Judge Daniel Williamson Rozak on his conviction for drug possession. On Feb. 23, 2012, Williamson tried to drop a small baggie of cocaine to the ground when he was pulled over by Will County sheriff’s police, according to court reports.

Lewin said Williamson had “six-hundredths of a gram of cocaine” with him. After a jury took about 15 minutes to find him guilty in August, Williamson stood up and spat phlegm at the court clerk and then at Rozak, the judge noted. Neither loogie struck the intended targets and Williamson began fighting with sheriff’s deputies in the courtroom.

Rozak gave Williamson the maximum sentence because of three prior felony convictions and a lack of “factors in mitigation.”

“His conduct throughout these proceedings has been less than admirable,” Rozak said.

“The defendant’s character, history and condition is garbage.”

Williamson’s jail records indicate many disciplinary prob-

lems, according to Rozak.

Williamson remained seated by himself in the jury box with a white medical mask deputies referred to as a “spit guard,” secured around his mouth and throat.

When Lewin asked to file a motion to have Rozak reconsider, Williamson told his attorney to stop delaying his transfer from jail to prison.

“I’m tired of being [here].

Let [the judge] do what he’s doing, file the appeal and we’ll come back. I’m sick of sitting in this county,” Williamson said.

Rozak responded to Williamson’s statement.

“I realize he has an attitude problem and a big mouth, but you’ll have to inform him he can’t appeal unless you file this motion,” Rozak told a visibly-frustrated Lewin.

Deputy police chief retiring

Lockport Deputy Police Chief Dave Draksler is retiring after 28 years on the force.

A party is being held in his honor at the police department from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 13, Chief of Police Terry Lemming announced at the Wednesday meeting. All who know Draksler are invited to come and celebrate, he said.

“Dave has been a great policeman, leader and, more importantly, he is a great person,” Lemming said.

Lemming credits Draklsler with helping bring improvements and a higher level of proficiency to the department.

Draksler was the main proponent in overhauling the department’s radio equipment, a key factor in officer safety, Lemming said.

PLAINFIELD – Troy Community School District 30-C will host “Coffee with the Superintendent” from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the district office, 5800 W.

LOCKPORT – With property values having increased for the first time in five years in 2015, Lockport residents will see a slight decline in their city property taxes for the year, to be paid in 2016.

Preliminary estimates show a 5 percent decrease to the city’s tax rate, to 0.9457 from last year’s rate of 0.998, Finance Director Lisa Heglund told the City Council’s Committee of the Whole on Wednesday night.

The council will vote to approve a tax levy of about $5.85 million, which includes $877,800 in bonds and interest for 2015, at its Dec. 2 meeting. For 2014, the city levied about $6.3 million.

It must file its levy with Will County by the fourth Tuesday of December.

The annual impact of the levy will result in a tax decrease of about $16.80 and $8.83 for homes with a market value in 2014 of $250,000 and $150,000, respectively, according to Heglund’s presentation. An own-

er of a $250,000 home is expected to pay $754.90 to the city in 2016 compared with $771.70 paid this year.

Because it works with estimates of property values and new growth, the city, as with most other communities, must overextend its levy in order to capture all the dollars coming to the city, Heglund said. Final numbers from the county will not be available until next spring.

“If you do not extend enough, the extra revenue from new growth will be lost forever,” Heglund said.

The city’s tax rate, which is limited by tax caps set by the state, is calculated using estimated equalized assessed values of existing property and expectations of annexation of new property and building activity, as well as the consumer price index.

Estimates from the county show an overall increase of 3 percent, or $41 million in EAV, according to Heglund’s report.

The CPI for the 2015 levy is 0.8 percent, compared with 1.5 percent the previous year.

OBITUARIES VALERIE G. BAKER Valerie Genise Baker was born on March 12, 1955 in Joliet, to Dorothy Mae Baker and Cleon Super Baker. She departed this life on October 30, 2015.

She confessed Christ at an early age.

Vallerie obtained her diploma at Joliet East High School. She was employed

by Trinity Services for 15-1/2 years until her courageous battle with cancer would not allow her to continue working.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, I.B. Baker and Jo Baker; her father, Cleon Super Baker; uncle, Henry Baker; aunts, Earnestine (Sarah) Ross, and Earmma Baker; nephews, Eric T. Baker and Antoine Baker.

Valerie leaves to cherish her wonderful memories; her husband, Leuitenant Simpson of Joliet, IL; five children, David B. (Vicki) Baker, Terkea M. Baker, Devon L. Baker, Tameka L. David Barry McClanahan, age 55, died November 2, 2015. Born on May 7, 1960, to Raymond (Linda) McClanahan of DuQuoin, Illinois and Alice (Don) Gossen of Goose Lake, he was a graduate of Joliet East High School and a long-time Joliet resident who will be remembered for his free spirit and unremitting love of life.

Preceded in death by his brother, Raymond.

ALICE P. NUETZMANN Born: June 10, 1923 Died: Nov. 2, 2015

Alice Elizabeth (Palmer) Nuetzmann, age 92, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 2, 2015.

Born in Joliet, IL on June 10, 1923 to the late William R. (1974) and Emma K. (Paul) (1985) Palmer.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Arthur F. Nuetzmann (1998).

She is survived by her sons, Robert (Lynn) of Augusta, WI, David (Patty) of Joliet, Steven of Joliet, Paul (Julie) of Martinez, GA; grandchildren, Robert (Tracy) Nuetzmann Jr., Heather (Jarod) VandenBerg, Sean Nuetzmann, Mary Nuetzmann, and Seaann Nuetzmann; great grandchildren, Alexis, Cassidy and Logan VandenBerg, and Kaiden Nuetzmann.

As it was Alice’s wishes, cremation rites were accorded. There will be no visitation. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

GEORGE S. ROBERTS

Born: Aug. 22, 1921; in Burlington, IL Died: Nov. 2, 2015; in Joliet, IL George S. Roberts, age 94, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2015, at home with family.

Born August 22, 1921, in Burlington, IL, he was a long time Joliet area resident.

A veteran of WWII, he was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps and the recipient of the Purple Heart. George farmed in Capron, IL for many years, and later worked construction where he was a Midwest Operating Engineer with Local #150.

He was a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Frances D. (nee Dugan) Roberts (2011); his parents, George and Mathilda (nee Kiel) Roberts; four sisters and two brothers.

Surviving are his loving daughters, Mary Ann (Steven) Smolkovich of Joliet and Ellen Marie Roberts of Libertyville, IL; and two dear granddaughters, Kate and Lori (fiancé Brian Madsen) Smolkovich. He was also the fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.

PHILAMINE SCERVINO Philamine “Phil” Scervino (Nee Amato), age 92, late of Homer Glen, passed away peacefully, Tuesday November 3, 2015 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Chicago, living in Homer Glen for the past 27 years. A very devoted member of St. Joseph Church, Lockport, where she was a lector and taught bible study for many years. She faithfully attended church every single morning. Phil loved to cook and sew, but most of all, cherished time spent with her family.

Preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Rachele (Vivona) Amato; three brothers, James, Angelo “Andy” and Tony Amato.

Survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Charles “Chuck” Scervino; two cherished daughters, Cynthia Ann Scervino and Mary Jo Venice; two adored granddaughters, Ashley and Jessica Venice; and one beautiful sister, Carmella (late Charles) Little; numerous nephews, nieces and many friends also survive.

Lynne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Stephen; one brother-in-law, Ronald “Sam” Legner; and one nephew, Mike Sealley.

‘E.T.’ screenwriter Melissa Mathison, dies at 65 of cancer

By LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Melissa Mathison never wrote down to her audiences.

Known for her family friendly films such as the unequaled “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial” and the elegant “The Black Stallion,” Mathison’s stories were rich with symbolism, adventure, depth and darkness.

With intricate plots and grown-up themes of loneliness and loss, her films enchanted a generation of kids and their parents.

Mathison died Wednesday at 65 after a bout with neuroendocrine cancer, her sister, Melinda Mathison Johnson, said.

“Melissa was a remarkable friend not only to me but to everyone who had the privilege to know her,” Mathison’s longtime friend and collaborator Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement.

“She was fiercely intelligent, confident, soulful, strong and had a smile that would light up a room. I will miss her terribly.”

Mathison was just in her early 30s when she found success with “E.T.” Steven Spielberg may have come up with the idea, but Mathison made it into a story. As far as Hollywood currency goes, she crafted one for the ages.

“Melissa had a heart that shined with generosity and love and burned as bright as the heart she gave ‘E.T.’,”

Spielberg said in a statement.

Mathison, a Los Angeles native, had a humble but high-profile start. Her first credited work was in assistant roles on “The Godfather: Part II” and “Apocalypse Now,” before she broke out with her script for “The Black Stallion.” Carol Ballard directed the warmly received adaptation released in 1979.

It was on the set of “Apocalypse Now” in 1976 that Mathison met Harrison Ford, who she married in 1983 and divorced in 2004 after multiple separations. She and Ford had two children, Georgia and Malcolm.

Throughout her career, Mathison often collaborated with producers Kennedy and Frank Marshall under their Amblin Entertainment banner.

Mathison also worked with directors such as Frank Oz on “The Indian in the Cupboard” and Martin Scorsese on 1997’s “Kundun,” a biographical film about the Dalai Lama.

“Kundun” struck close to Mathison’s personal passions. An active supporter of Tibet freedom, she was also on the board of the nonprofit advocacy group International Campaign for Tibet.

But history will most fondly remember her for fleshing out the story of the friendly, homesick alien E.T. The film, directed by Spielberg and released in 1982, became one of the highest grossing of all time.

Arthur Gerald “Jerry” Stone, age 80, of Camden, Delaware, passed away on November 4, 2015 at home.

Mr. Stone had been the Assistant to the Director of Staffing for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington, D.C. Jerry was a graduate of Joliet High School in Joliet, and graduated from Joliet Junior College. He earned his master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois. Mr. Stone was first chair flute for the University of Illinois Orchestra and Band. While he was in high school, he played flute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also played flute for his church.

Jerry enjoyed boating and fishing.

He was a member of the Lions Club in Illinois and the Elks Lodge in Easton, Maryland. He enjoyed reading Tom Clancy books.

Mr. Stone is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Stone; three children, Gregory Ralph Stone and his wife, Jessica of Fairfax, VA, Nancy Jean McIntire and her husband, Gerald of Hanover, PA and Kenneth Gerald Stone and his wife, Brenda of Annapolis, MD; his sister in law, Joan Stone of Illinois; 10 grandchildren and one great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Edwin R. Stone.

Robert and Arline (McDonald) Christensen. She was raised in the Dwight area, and attended the Danish School south of Gardner and later Dwight grade school. She was a graduate of Seneca High School and continued her education in nursing at Silver Cross School of Nursing.

On February 1, 1964, Lynne married Stephen Leonard Terry in Morris and he preceded her in death on April 24, 2014. Lynne worked most of her life in nursing and held employment over the years at LaSalle Peru Hospital and Morris Hospital. She was the director of nursing at Continental Manor in Dwight and later retired as a nurse case manager with Hartford Insurance Company. Lynne was an active member of United Lutheran Church in Gardner, where she was involved with the ULC Women’s Group.

Lynne also belonged to the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed needlepoint, cross stitch and crocheting, and took pleasure in gardening and her flowers. Lynne will most be remembered for her love of cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Police: Chicago boy, 9, ‘lured’ into alley and shot

CHICAGO – A 9-year-old Chicago boy who was fatally shot this week was “lured” from a park into an alley and executed because of his father’s alleged gang connections, police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Thursday in a crime he described as among the most “unfathomable” of his 35 years in policing.

Tyshawn Lee was shot in the head and back Monday in a neighborhood alley on the city’s South Side.

McCarthy told reporters Thursday the slaying was the result of two gangs fighting, potentially in a string of retaliatory events dating back months. He said the boy’s father isn’t cooperating with police.

The child’s father, Pierre Stokes, has disagreed with authorities’ characterization of him and said he’s easy to find. He hasn’t talked about whether he’s a gang member but said police have spent more time pursuing him than finding out who killed his son.

House votes to keep highway spending level

WASHINGTON – Despite years of warnings the nation’s roads, bridges and transit systems are falling apart and will bring nightmarish congestion, the House on Thursday passed a six-year transportation bill that maintains the spending status quo.

The bill, approved on a bipartisan vote of 363-64, authorizes $325 billion in spending through the 2021 federal budget year.

But it provides money for only the first three years because lawmakers couldn’t agree on a way to pay for it all. The measure would continue current rates of spending, adjusted for inflation.

The bill is similar to a transportation bill passed by the Senate in July. Congressional leaders say they hope to quickly work out the differences between the two measures and send President Barack Obama a final bill before Thanksgiving. They also said they hope to find the money to pay for the past three years of the bill.

Russia, Egypt dismiss bomb suggestions

LONDON – Five days after a Russian jetliner broke apart high above the Sinai, Russia and Egypt on Thursday dismissed Western suggestions that a bomb may have caused the crash that killed 224 people, saying the speculation was a rush to judgment.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who spoke to the presidents of both countries in the very public dispute, said he had grounded all British flights to and from the Sinai Peninsula because of “intelligence and information” indicating a bomb was the probable reason a Metrojet Airbus A321-200 plane had crashed Saturday in the desert.

British and U.S. officials, guided primarily by intelligence intercepts and satellite imagery, have suggested gingerly it might have been the work of the extremist Islamic State group and its affiliates in the Sinai.

Cop tried to ‘put a hit’ on Fox Lake administrator

Joseph Gliniewicz requested a meeting with a motorcycle gang member to “put a hit” on the village administrator he feared would discover his years of embezzling, an investigator said Thursday.

Lake County Sheriff’s Detective Chris Covelli said Gliniewicz in April asked someone to set up a meeting with the high-ranking gang member with the intended target being Village Administrator Anne Marrin. The messages, which were later deleted, came shortly after officials said Marrin had started auditing the city’s assets and finances, including those of Fox Lake Police Explorer Post 300 program.

The unnamed person told police in an interview Gliniewicz made the request for a hit on Marrin in conversation, not over text or other messages, Covelli said. The gang member, who Covelli

also would not name, denied talking to Gliniewicz.

Covelli said Marrin was unaware of Gliniewicz’s plot as it unfolded.

“She didn’t know any of this until he was dead,” Covelli said.

Gliniewicz, 52, was shot and killed Sept. 1 after he radioed he was investigating three suspicious men. His death sparked a massive manhunt and left the community in mourning over the revered officer affectionately known as “G.I. Joe.” Gliniewicz decided to carefully stage his suicide to look like a homicide after months of pressure that his “extensive crimes” would be discovered, investigators said.

Covelli said investigators also found a small amount of cocaine in Gliniewicz’s desk drawer when they searched it the week of his death. The cocaine was not associated with any cases investigators could find, Covelli said.

In messages sent to a separate unnamed person in May, Gliniewicz also had talked about setting Marrin

up. In one message released Wednesday, Gliniewicz wrote, “MANY SCENARIOS from planting things volo bog!!” [sic].

“Was he going to use the cocaine to do that,” Covelli said, “we don’t know.”

Marrin during a news conference Wednesday spoke briefly after investigators revealed the circumstances surrounding Gliniewicz’s death.

She mentioned the threatening statements, but stood strong behind the inquiries that apparently had angered Gliniewicz.

“When I heard that he was concerned that I was asking tough questions about the Explorer program, it only confirmed to me that asking the tough questions was absolutely right,” Marrin said.

Gliniewicz had bilked the Fox Lake Police Explorer program of thousands of dollars over the course of seven years, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr.

Here are some fun postseason facts about the Angels (24-12).

In the past 13 years, JCA has won nine sectional titles under Scheibe. The program has 12 sectional titles total.

The Angels own a 7-1 supersectional record. The only team it has lost to in a supersectional, Wheaton St. Francis, now competes in Class 4A. JCA has won three state

championships, all under Scheibe. Last year, the Angels took second in the state, losing to St. Francis.

Now, three more victories stand in JCA’s way of raising a fourth banner.

Morris takes its best shot but falls short

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – If someone had told Morris volleyball coach Taylor Lafond when the postseason began that her team would be playing for a sectional title, she would have been more than happy.

And although the Redskins’ season ended Thursday night in a 25-23, 27-25 loss to Joliet Catholic in the championship game of the Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Sectional, she still found it tough to be anything but pleased with the way her team performed.

“We definitely made them earn it,” Lafond said after JCA won its ninth sectional crown in the past 13 years. “There was no giving up in our girls.

They left it all on the floor.

“Still, we were that close.

Both games, we lost by the two points that you have to lose by. We didn’t get blown out by any means, and I couldn’t be prouder of these girls.”

Senior Kaylin Korte ended her stellar Morris career with a match-high 17 kills to go with nine digs and two blocks while

playing with a wrist that was injured in Tuesday’s win over top-seeded Providence Catholic. She finished the season with 534 kills, an average 14.4 a match.

“It’s sad to see my high school career end,” she said.

“But I am so proud of the girls on this team. No matter what, we proved we belonged in this game. We were in the final 16 in the state, and every person on this team has a love and a passion for the game.”

Morris (17-18-2) was seeded 13th in the 22-team sectional and was trying to maintain the postseason magic that had seen the Redskins defeat Providence, No. 4 Lincoln-Way West and No. 5 Chicago Christian en route to the title matchup with the No. 2 Angels.

“We’re really excited,” Angels senior outside Megan Cladis said. “We came out today knowing that it was going to be a tough match.

We played them earlier in the season and won; but we knew that both of our teams changed, so we wanted to come out with a lot of energy and make a point to whoever we’re playing next that we’re ready to come and get them.

We really want to win state.

That’s our goal.

“Since we were here last year, we know the energy that we need to have. We

know how to play as a team.

We have to play for each other to get down to state. We know what it takes. Our experience will help us a lot.”

Well-rounded and smart play also helped.

Cladis led with six kills off extremely smart attacking.

When her swings weren’t going down, she switched to tipping, and Morris couldn’t pick up any of it. Senior middle Andriana Acosta and junior Taylor Zurliene both had five impressive kills, too.

Senior setters Megan Melone (six assists) and Jessica Simon (five assists) were able to distribute the ball evenly to their hitters because of strong defense. Senior libero Meghan Harrison – who leads the Joliet area in digs per-match average – had a whopping 17 digs. Zurliene added nine and Simon tallied

eight.

Many teams have one star player, but the Angels won because it was a complete team effort.

“That’s how it’s been all season,” Simon said. “Everybody contributes all the time.

We never have to rely on one person. If someone is struggling, someone is always going to pick them up. We are all well-rounded, and I think that’s why we play so well, and it makes it easier for us to win. Everybody contributes. We don’t have to go to just one person.”

To win, the Angels had to limit one player. Saying that limiting a player to 17 kills is a weird statement, but an accurate one Thursday night.

You don’t have to pound the ball down every time. It just has to get down. I think our experience showed tonight. A lot of these girls have been in big matches like this.”

For now, however, the supersectional awaits.

“This has been our goal since July 1,” Harrison said.

“We knew that they were going to be one of the best teams that we played this year,” Hise

said. “They were all-around a great team in the front row and back row, but so are we.

“I wasn’t expecting much for this year, but when everyone showed up at summer camp, I was blown away by the amount of talent we had and knew that we could go far this year. We were all so close, and I loved everyone’s personalities, and we just clicked. The

last two years, we went a step farther, so in the next few years this team is going to go really far.”

With only four seniors on the team, the future looks bright for the Indians, who figure to be a factor in the playoffs the next few years. This year’s seniors are proud of where their program is at and are excited to see what their teammates will accomplish.

“Everyone was kind of emotional, but only one team can end the season with a win, and we were one that were on the losing side,” Alessio said. “We started off slow this year, but we just had to play as a team.

We all meshed as one after that and played for each other.

“Our team has a lot of sophomores and juniors returning, and I think that they will go really far the next couple of years. When I was their age, I wasn’t nearly as good as these girls are. It’s exciting to say that I went to Minooka and that it’s getting better as a program.”

FRANKFORT – Capturing its program’s first sectional championship since 1999 was a tall enough task for Minooka’s girls volleyball team Thursday.

But having to defeat Lincoln-Way North in the final match on its court as it pursued its first sectional title in the sport proved to be too big of a challenge for the Indians.

The Phoenix showed why they were their Class 4A sectional’s top seed as they claimed a 25-19, 25-16 victory over Minooka.

North (35-3) advances to Saturday’s Normal West Supersectional, where it meets Normal Community – which won, 25-13, 25-23, over O’Fallon in the Springfield Sectional final.

Minooka (28-11), which was playing in its first sectional final since 2011, led, 8-6, in the first set but could force only four ties in the opener and then trailed throughout the finale.

“They tore our serve-receive apart, and then it just kind of brought everybody down,” Indians coach Carrie Prosek said. “Those two outside hitters really tore us apart. We have big blocks, but they got around them. She (coach Mary Brown) did a very nice job of scouting us.

“Our goal was to just have a successful season with me being new; and when we won regionals, they were so excited. Our four seniors – Ginger (Perinar), Emily (Hise), Maddie (Alessio) and Sydney (Arlis) – did a great job with their leadership. This is a stepping stone for this program. Getting farther than this will be our future goal with these kids.”

The Indians claimed a pair of early two-point leads in the opening set after kills by Alli Papesh (seven kills) and still were tied at 16 when North used a 5-0 spurt to take control.

The Phoenix got kills from Ali Geary (five kills), Hannah Lesiak (six kills, four digs) and Allyson Cappel (10 kills, three aces), who also had an ace, during that decisive run.

By JEFF DeGRAW Shaw Media Correspondent KANKAKEE – In front of a large and boisterous crowd Thursday night, Wilmington gave its all but fell, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, to Watseka in the Class 2A Bishop McNamara Sectional final.

Wilmington was attempting to win its first sectional crown since 2008.

In the first game, the Wildcats (16-14) jumped to an 8-2 lead.

Watseka tied it at 9, but it was all the purple of Wilmington after that. The Wildcats had leads of 1611, 20-12 and 23-16 before putting the first game away, 25-22.

“We came out strong in the first game,” Wilmington coach Laura Wakefield said. “I really think we caught Watseka a little off guard. We had good momentum and played very well. That was fun.”

Wilmington senior Hailey Huml was all over the floor during the first-game victory.

She ended the night with six kills and two aces.

Watseka (25-2), which finished third in the Class 2A State Final in 2014, jumped to a 5-1 lead in the second game before Wilmington came back to tie it at 9. That was as close as Wilmington would get, however, as the Warriors built a 19-13 lead. The Wildcats fought back to trail, 23-20, but Watseka responded and went on to win, 25-20.

In last week’s win over Downers Grove North, Lees rushed for 278 yards and completed 9 of 10 passes for 120 yards and four touchdowns. So the East defense, which allows a mere 8.7 points a game, has a difficult assignment. The Griffins’ offense, which averages 36 points, counters Lees with Brandon Bauer, also a dual-threat quarterback. He has completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,534 yards and has rushed for 571 yards.

The skinny: Mississippi Valley champion Troy Triad has averaged 33.3 points and relies heavily on a running game that features Adam Nelson, who has rushed for 1,600 yards, 30 touchdowns and averages nearly 11 yards a carry.

Quarterback Tommy Bauer has added 525 rushing yards. The 33-21 loss to unbeaten Belleville Althoff in Week 9 can be viewed as a positive for the Knights as they approached the playoffs. They scored narrow victories over Collinsville and Mount Vernon early on, and both finished with losing records. Since then, the Knights have been impressive. Junior Cal Pohrte quarterbacked Lincoln-Way West last week with Connor Lowman out with a shoulder injury and had a big game. So the Warriors, with Gabe Montalvo in the backfield, feel good about their offense regardless of who takes the snaps.

Rose scores 29 as Bulls beat Thunder, 104-98

CHICAGO – Derrick Rose came up big down the stretch to score 29 points and Jimmy Butler added 26 to lead the Bulls to a 104-98 win Thursday night over Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Rose scored 10 points over the final 3½ minutes to lift the Bulls after they blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma City tied it with about 5 minutes left. But Rose’s performance down the stretch helped offset Durant’s 33 points and lifted the Bulls after they got blown out at Charlotte two nights earlier.

The Bulls clinging to a 98-96 lead when Rose hit consecutive jumpers to make it a six-point game with just over a minute remaining.

Blackhawks’ Kane avoids charges, probe dropped BUFFALO, N.Y. – Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane can finally focus solely on his NHL career after avoiding criminal charges in a rape investigation, with prosecutors ending a bi-

zarre three-month ordeal that put one of hockey’s biggest stars at the center of intense speculation and criticism.

Prosecutors announced Thursday they declined to file charges against Kane because of a lack of credible evidence in a case “rife with reasonable doubt.”

The accuser signed an affidavit saying she did not want to press charges, prosecutors said.

Kenseth loses appeals to overturn suspension

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – His appeals rejected, Matt Kenseth defiantly vowed Thursday to race as he always has and accused NASCAR of “unfairly” making an example out of him with a two-race suspension for intentionally wrecking Joey Logano over the weekend at Martinsville.

Kenseth will miss the next two races, at Texas and Phoenix, and is eligible to return for the Nov. 22 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The national motorsports appeals panel denied Kenseth’s appeal Thursday, and a few hours later so did final appeals

officer Bryan Moss, who did reduce Kenseth’s probation from six months until the end of this year.

Harvey, Fielder earn Comeback Player awards

NEW YORK – Mets pitcher Matt Harvey has won the NL Comeback Player of the Year award and Rangers designated hitter Prince Fielder has earned the AL honor.

Returning from Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss the 2014 season, Harvey was 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA in 29 starts, helping New York reach the World Series for the first time since 2000.

Fielder hit .305 with 23 homers and 98 RBIs for Texas, which won the AL West for the first time since 2011. He played in 42 games in 2014, when his season ended in mid-May because of a herniated neck disk that needed surgery.

The winners were announced Thursday. The awards, which began in 2005, are voted on by the 30 team beat writers from MLB.com.

Issuing ultimatums is not the way to fix GOP debates They want a pledge that the temperature will be kept below 67 degrees. That no one will require them to raise their hands to answer a question, or pose a yes or no question without providing enough time for a “substantive answer.”

Also, no “lightning rounds.” Those are definitely off-limits, as with audience “reaction shots.” And, please, no footage of their empty podiums after a commercial break.

These are just a few of the demands Republican presidential candidates have for TV networks before they agree to take part in another primary debate. With such a list, you’d think the candidates were pampered rock stars on tour, not supposedly serious politicians running for the nation’s highest office. (In our dressing room this evening, we’d like five bottles of San Pellegrino chilled to 33 degrees, one large bowl of peanut M&Ms, all green ones removed.)

The list, which no campaign has endorsed yet, was drawn up nonetheless in a clandestine meeting Sunday night attended by the leaders of more than a dozen GOP campaigns. It represents an attempt to alter a debate process the candidates loathe, culminating with last week’s debate hosted

by CNBC. Wanting debates with more substance, as several candidates have said they want, is a noble goal. The face-offs are an im-

portant way for voters to vet candidates aspiring to be president. Yet, at times this year, the debates have resembled more of an ego-fueled WWF match than a sobering war of words.

The debates should be better. But petulantly issuing demands to TV networks – and threatening to go around them and stream debates online if they don’t comply – isn’t the best way to go about that. Not when your list includes frivolous things such as making sure the temperature of the room remains pleasant, and forbidding moderators from talking about the candidates using the restroom during breaks.

Some candidates, wisely, have recognized this.

On Monday afternoon, the campaign for Donald Trump – now in second place behind retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson – announced it would negotiate independently with TV networks before the next debate.

Carly Fiorina’s campaign has opted out, as has Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told CNN the same thing, after comments he made Monday on Fox News: “Stop complaining,” he told his rivals. “Do me a favor, set up a stage, put podiums up there, and let’s just go.”

We hope they add that to the list.

‘Floral Impressions’ show by former Joliet resident Sally Schoch at local gallery through Nov. 7

The exhibit’s 40 pieces cover the entire “featured artist” wall – and then some.

“We took down our own work to make room,” Ainsworth said.

A painter for 71 years, Schoch, 81, of Wilmette, is an abstract expressionist and fabric collage artist. She said her favorite aspects of art are texture and color. Schoch said she is fascinated with color, although she prefers to dress herself in black and white.

“A friend said to me, ‘Your color comes out in your hands,’ ” Schoch said.

Dubbing herself the “jack of all trades and master of none” and “having the attention span of a gnat,” Schoch – a graduate of Joliet Township High School and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago – said she has done portraits, black-and-white series, big barns, sailboats and even doll-making.

She painted her first noteworthy mural in 1946 – when she was a seventh-grader and known as Sally Ann Davis – on a wall in Farragut School.

“It was hysterical,” she said, but then, Schoch doesn’t take herself too seriously. “I once had a professor tell me, ‘Don’t think everything you do is great. It’s not. Be lucky if you have a couple of things that are great.’ You learn to throw things away.”

Schoch prefers watercolor and oil to acrylic (“I’m not too swift with acrylic,” Schoch said). She loves the malleability, intense colors and slow dry time of oil, as well as the spontaneity in watercolor.

Spontaneity and its unknown outcome are why Schoch prefers abstract to realism.

“Sometimes, art is great,” Schoch said, “and at other times, it’s horrible, and I paint over them.”

Since Mother Nature provides plenty of inspiration, Schoch said her favorite place to go for it is the Chi-

cago Botanic Garden, where she can observe firsthand the life cycles of varieties of flowers.

“You can get any color, any shape, any kind of flower imaginable,” Schoch said. “It’s endless, and you don’t have to make them terribly representational.

As you know, photography takes care of that, especially today.”

That said, Schoch does work from photographs – and from memory. One won’t find Schoch setting up an easel in a public place, even when that place is a vast flower garden.

“I’m rather reserved,” Schoch said. “I don’t like people looking over my shoulder.”

Schoch has a similar passion for texture. Although one can paint texture into an art piece, the result is not the same as the tactile feel of various fibers. Fiber floral art? Well, that is the best mix of the two, Schoch feels.

Schoch recently exhibited her fiber work in Indiana, she said, and spends about 30 hours a week creating art – and another 10 hours a week minimum doing volunteer work. She’s hoping to

participate in ArtPrize next year, a juried art show in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that features more than 1,500 art pieces in 160 venues across three square miles, according to its website.

In the meantime, Schoch enjoys hearing the viewer’s reaction – good or bad – to her art. She recalled the comments from “a couple of little old ladies” who’d checked out Schoch’s paintings at an exhibit: “They don’t look very real.”

“I had to turn away and laugh,” Schoch said. “Isn’t life grand?”

ent-dense foods include leafy greens, such as spinach, kale and broccoli; whole grains, such as wheat, corn, quinoa, and barley in the form of breads and cereals; fruits, such as blueberries, strawberries and pomegranates; oily fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and sardines; low-fat dairy products, such as yogurt and milk; lean meats; and vegetables, such as mushrooms, sweet potatoes and bell peppers.

Foods rich in healthy, plant-based fats – such as nuts, seeds and some oils – also contain a lot of nutrients. But they are higher in calories, so you should be more mindful of portion size. On my website, www.askdoctork.com, I’ve put examples of nutrient-dense foods, along with their calories per serving and the nutrients they contain.

If you’re not already eating a healthy diet, or you’re not eating enough healthy foods, nutrient-dense foods will help fill in the gaps.

For example, one slice of white bread has about 70 calories, but very few vitamins and minerals.

One slice of whole-wheat bread also has about 70 calories. But it has four times the amount of potassium and magnesium and three times the zinc.

To boost your nutrient intake, make every calorie count. Use the USDA Nutrient Database to check the nutritional values of foods (ndb.nal. usda.gov/ndb/foods). Or work with a dietitian to come up with a plan.

Dear Dr. K: I’m in my 80s. These days, I’m not very hungry, and I eat a lot less than I used to.

My daughter is worried I’m not getting enough nutrients. Is she right?

Dear Reader: Of course, I don’t know if you are getting enough nutrients, but your daughter is right to be worried about it. For one thing, you say you’re not eating much. People normally start to have a reduced appetite as they get into their 70s and 80s, but it’s not a dramatic change.

When people of any age who have had a good appetite most of their lives suddenly lose their appetite, I worry they are ill. In particular, the combination of poor appetite and losing weight without trying always worries a doctor about cancer. If you’re losing weight, talk to your doctor.

Obviously, not eating much is one way a person doesn’t get enough nutrients. On top of that, getting enough nutrients through diet becomes more challenging as we age. Our bodies don’t absorb nutrients as well as they once did. So it’s important to make the most out of the foods we do eat. One way to do this is by choosing more nutrient-dense foods.

These foods provide more nutrition bang for the calorie buck.

I spoke to Liz Moore, a registered dietitian at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She described nutrient-dense foods as those that contain an abundance of nutrients and other healthful substances, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, lean protein and unsaturated fats, without having an excess of calories. Nutrient-dense foods contrast with those that have low nutritional value and lots of calories – such as chips or soda.

Dear Abby: I am a 20-yearold woman. A few months ago, my boyfriend (my very first boyfriend) committed suicide. I feel absolutely destroyed.

The problem is, my family doesn’t regard my feelings of grief seriously because our relationship was started and maintained online. We lived several states apart, and while we never met in person, we talked every night and video-chatted many, many times. My feelings for him were real.

And when your dad shows up at your home unannounced, speak up. Tell him you and your husband don’t like it. Make clear his nasty comments about your mother aren’t welcome, and neither will he be, unless he calls first to see if a visit is all right with everyone. His misbehavior continues because you have allowed it.
