As of Wednesday, only 170 votes separated Republican Ken Kaupas, the leader, and Democrat Mike Kelley, who hopes to make up the difference when provisional and absentee ballots are counted.

“Right now, as we know of, there are at least 700 votes to be counted,” Kelley said. “I can’t concede anything yet. I’m only down 170 votes.”

Kaupas agreed with his opponent.

“If the tables were turned, I’d have the same stance,” he said. “I wouldn’t be conceding.”

For Kaupas, “It’s deja vu all over again, as Yogi Berra said.”

In the March primary election, Kaupas led his Republican opponent, Nick Ficarello, by 223 votes on election night. At the end of election night Tuesday, he appeared to have a 242-vote edge over Kelley.

But once votes from a section of Aurora, which stretches into Will County, were tallied, Kelley narrowed the lead to 170.

The Aurora votes are counted separately by the city of Aurora and have not yet been included in the Will County results shown on the county clerk’s website.

What makes the final count in this election even more interesting than the primary is that, for the first time, voters could register and vote all the way up through Election Day. None of those votes from Monday and Tuesday have been counted yet, and there are about 723 of them, according to the Will County Clerk’s office.

“That’s a lot,” said Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots, adding she had not expected so many so late in the election.

Add in late-arriving absentee ballots yet to be counted and other provisional ballots that have not been counted, and Kaupas said there may be as many as 1,500 votes yet to be calculated into the results.

“It’s still anybody’s race,”

Kaupas said. “I’m just glad I’m on this side of the coin rather than the other.”

Kaupas said he expected another tight race, but he thought the margin would be closer to 800 votes.

Kelley, too, uttered the words “deja vu” when asked to compare Tuesday to the Republican primary. In the final primary vote count, Kaupas held his lead and actually picked up one vote.

But Kelley was “cautiously optimistic” he could close a 170vote gap with so many ballots yet to be counted.

“Realistically, it won’t be decided until the 18th [of November],” he said.

While he ended election night trailing Kaupas, Kelley noted the sheriff’s race was closer than other county matchups dominated by Republicans.

Joliet police suspect shots fired near funeral home gang-related THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Police suspect gunplay that led to shots fired near a funeral home on Monday was gang-related.

However, officials have not confirmed the shooting was connected to a recent string of gang violence.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said the shooting occurred on the 100 block of Union Street, a block away from and just minutes before visitation was set to start for 16-year-old shooting victim

A residence and car were hit by bullets.

Police also said a funeral home window was struck. But City Councilman Terry Morris, owner of the Minor-Morris Funeral Home, said he did not know of any shots hitting the building.

The visitation was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Monday, according to the funeral home’s website. The shooting incident occurred at 3:55 p.m.

Wright was the victim of

a gang-related shooting on Oct. 23. Christopher Stamps, a 16-year-old teenager, was charged last week with murder in connection with Wright’s death.

“We got a call from a citizen in the area of some guys looking like they were ready to fight,” Gregory said, adding that a nearby officer responded to gunshots fired. “This happened away from the funeral home. But a residence was struck along with a car. A funeral home window was struck by two or three rounds.”

“We must have sent out the right message,” he said. “We fought, we fought, and we’re still fighting.”

Both Kelley and Kaupas are officers in the Will County Sheriff’s Department. Kelley is a sergeant in the investigations section. Kaupas is deputy chief and second cousin to Sheriff Paul Kaupas, who did not run for re-election.

One effect of the close election will be to delay the transition, noted Ken Kaupas. Whoever wins takes office Dec. 1.

GOP recaptures majority with County Board races

Tuesday night was a big one for Republicans, to say the least.

Republicans on the Will County Board were able to recapture a once-held majority, while statewide, Republican businessman Bruce Rauner claimed victory over Democrat Gov. Pat Quinn in one of the country’s most competitive gubernatorial races.

Nationally, Republicans seized control of the U.S. Senate.

Republican Ken Kaupas held a slight 170-vote lead over opponent Mike Kelley on Wednesday in the sheriff’s election. Both candidates said it’s still too close to call, with hundreds of provisional and absentee votes left to tally.

The county treasurer’s race was another clear win for Republicans, where incumbent Steve Weber beat out opponent Laurie Summers.

Weber was first elected to the treasurer’s office in 2010.

Kaupas believed Rauner’s strong get-out-the-vote efforts brought Republican voters to the polls in Will County, where the Winnetka equity investor received nearly 56 percent of the vote over Gov. Pat Quinn’s 41 percent.

Rauner had two Will County campaign offices – one in New Lenox and another in Plainfield, Kaupas said.

“The people who have been involved in [politics] for a long time were very pleased with Rauner’s business-like effort,” Kaupas said. “He had paid staff. They brought in equipment. They used modern technology. … People who were in the field had real-time data as information.”

County Board races

Republicans recouped a majority on the Will Coun-

ty Board, thanks to Annette Parker’s ousting of longtime board member Walter Adamic in a historically Democratic area, coupled with Reed Bible’s loss in District 5.

Parker, a Lockport Township Park Board member from Crest Hill, won one of two District 9 seats, with 6,389 votes to Adamic’s 5,018. Democrat Lauren Staley-Ferry, the daughter-in-law to board member Mark Ferry, also secured herself a spot on the board with 6,893 votes, according to unofficial vote totals from the Will County Clerk’s Office.

In District 5, Democrat Bible lost to Republicans Darren Bennefield and Gretchen Fritz, which helped tip the scale enough so that the 26-member County Board is now split 14-12, with a Republican advantage.

Parker said Wednesday she “knew going into it” the race would be an uphill battle but that her strong stance against raising taxes and overspending in county government resonated with taxpayers.

“We’re all very happy. We knew it was going to be a challenge,” Parker said. “It’s surprising, but we worked hard.”

While Parker said she thinks Rauner may have played a part in Republicans winning back their majority, County Board candidate Cory Singer, who won a seat representing District 2, had another perspective.

“It’s hard to argue that local races aren’t impacted by the top of the ticket. It happens a lot,” Singer said. “But in Will, especially with the County Board races, I think those stood on their own. I’m confident we’d have the same results whether Rauner was on the ballot or not.”

Rauner turns to governing

CHICAGO – Governor-elect Bruce Rauner began appointing a team Wednesday to build his administration and pledged to make good on a promise to turn Springfield on its head, even though Democrats appeared to keep their solid hold on the Legislature.

After more than year of bashing the Democratic “machine” that controls the Illinois Capitol, the Republican businessman could be in for a tumultuous journey when he takes office in January and tries to find solutions for the state’s many persistent problems.

Among the biggest challenges will be how to balance a state budget without revenue from a tax increase that Rauner opposed. A top Democratic leader signaled Wednesday that his chamber will let the increase roll back on Jan. 1, leaving the governor-elect with a spending plan that’s billions of dollars short of the amount needed to maintain current staffing and services.

And that’s just for starters.

Rauner has pushed a new tax on services that Democrats have opposed in the past. He

also differs with some party leaders on how and when to raise Illinois’ minimum wage, as well as other major issues.

Rauner defeated Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday, carrying every corner of the state except heavily Democratic Cook County.

The wealthy venture capitalist and first-time candidate from Winnetka appointed several people Wednesday to lead his transition team. He said his running mate, Wheaton City Council member Evelyn Sanguinetti, will lead the group.

Quinn conceded the race during a brief news conference, less than a day after insisting he would not give up until all ballots were counted.

“It’s clear we don’t have enough votes to win,” he said, adding that it was important to respect the voters who waited in line – sometimes for hours – to cast their ballots. He did not take questions.

Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf said the governor-elect spent Wednesday in meetings. Rauner did not plan a public schedule because he’s taking “a methodical, thoughtful approach” to the transition, Schrimpf said.

Parks referendum unusually well received Tax hike passed with 70 percent of the vote

vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Members of the Growing Parks Strong committee and supporters of the Joliet Park District referendum watched with anticipation Tuesday night at Traditions Restaurant and Pub as election results poured in.

The first precincts showing results had the referendum passing by a strong majority.

“We were excited when the first numbers came in and we watched the rest trend the same direction,” Park Board President Glen Marcum said.

More than 70 percent of voters said “yes” to the park district referendum, which asked residents if they would approve issuing $19.5 million in bonds for capital improvements. With 54 of 54 precincts reporting, there were 16,856 “yes” votes to 7,111 “no” votes, according to unofficial vote totals from the Will County Clerk’s office.

“Commissioners, staff, the

team with the park district [all] work hard to give the community a good service,” Executive Director Dominick Egizio said. “I hope the vote is a reflection of the community agreeing with us on that.”

A strong positive vote for a referendum question asking residents for money isn’t the norm. While the Mokena park district referendum narrowly passed, the Braidwood, New Lenox park district and Wilton Township referendums failed Tuesday.

The bond would require taxpayers to pay an estimated $20 to $21 more per year per $100,000 of assessed property value on Joliet Park District property taxes.

The bond will be used for $6.2 million in parks renovations; $2 million in roads and infrastructure for Pilcher Park; $500,000 in tree restoration; $500,000 in security improvements; $300,000 in Memorial Stadium lighting; $3.5 million for an indoor training facility; and $5.5 million for

Business and community leaders from across Joliet formed the committee after the park district surveyed residents about what they would like to see improved in the city’s parks.

Jaworski said after the survey identified specific park district needs, the committee was formed with members who represent many facets of Joliet.

The committee distributed election materials in support of the referendum and formed

a website with information on the projects and costs associated with the referendum.

Egizio said the park district’s communication with voters contributed to the big victory.

“We went to the voters with what our needs and projects are,” he said. “There were a couple of things they didn’t want so we didn’t move forward with those projects.”

AG: Grant’s customers can file claims to recover money

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Customers might be able to recover money spent at Grant’s Appliances before the company shut down in early October without delivering the merchandise.

The Joliet-based appliances and electronics retailer is entering into an assignment for the benefit of creditors – similar to bankruptcy – where customers can file a claim to recover money they lost, Illinois Attorney General’s Office spokeswoman Maura Possley said Wednesday.

When Grant’s stores shut down in Joliet, Aurora, Or-

land Park, Downers Grove and Merrillville, Indiana, dozens of customers complained about not receiving items they purchased from the store.

Company representatives have been silent since then. In Joliet, customers could only see a sign saying “Temporarily closed for inventory,” posted on the front door.

Some customers spent either hundreds or thousands of dollars, with no idea if they would get their money back.

Customers now will be instructed to file a claim for the money spent, and it is not clear if they will ever see the appliances they bought.

“On the whole, we are looking into every complaint and continue monitoring the situation,” she said.

ers who made purchases with a credit card speak with their bank to dispute the charge.

Grant’s has faced lawsuits from two customers and one lender in the past month.

Marion Fuller of Joliet is suing Grant’s for $568.18 because a washing machine from the store wasn’t delivered. Wally Kaczmarczyk of Lemont is seeking $10,000 for kitchen appliances he never received.

In another lawsuit, Summitbridge Credit Investments IV LLC seeks foreclosure of Grant’s Joliet properties and companies affiliated with the appliance retailer for failing to make payments on loans.

Union leaders want Plainfield to build tax base for teachers’ pay

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The leader of the Plainfield teachers union criticized Village Hall this week for not attracting enough business to support teachers’ pay.

The comments at a Village Board meeting Monday marked a spillover from contract negotiations in Plainfield School District 202.

Association of Plainfield Teachers President Dawn Bullock suggested the village should increase the tax base so the school district could afford to retain teachers.

The teachers union is in the midst of contract negotiations with the school district. Most recently, a tentative agreement was voted down by teachers, who are seeking more pay and a lighter workload that they said has increased over the years.

“Every year we are training new teachers and losing our experienced staff that provide the mentorship and support new

teachers need,” Bullock said, adding the district has lost 100 to 150 teachers every year for the past seven years to other districts.

Bullock said because the bulk of funding for the school district comes from property taxes and the state, and the state can’t be trusted, the village should recruit more industry and business.

“I have seen the two to three restaurants at the west end of Lockport [Street] turn over too many times. Businesses that continually fail are of no benefit to the town of Plainfield,” she said.

After her comments, Village Manager Brian Murphy said the village is one of the top destinations for business in the area.

“The village of Plainfield has been aggressive in its approach in encouraging economic development,” he said, adding that Bullock’s comments got him worked up because the staff puts a lot of effort into recruit-

ing businesses and doesn’t seek credit.

Murphy said over the past five years, Plainfield has seen several larger employers move or expand in the village, including Diageo, Logoplast and Kuusakoski.

Incentive for businesses

Garrigan said the village works with the Will County Center for Economic Development and the school district to incentivize large employers to come to Plainfield.

The biggest incentive the village has given was a 50 percent tax relief for the first five years of locating in Plainfield.

“If it had not been for property tax abatements, those businesses would not be located in Plainfield,” Garrigan said.

The school district also has a standard of requiring a donation from $5,000 to $15,000 to the district’s Foundation for Excellence as a part of agreements that give incentives to businesses.

Joliet police, high school say threat not credible

vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A threatening message found on a Joliet West High School bathroom stall Monday was determined to hold no credible threat and isn’t connected with the shooting death of a student two weeks ago, school and police officials said.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said school administrators on Wednesday identified a student as the source of the threatening message.

“The administrative investigation revealed the source of the threat, which was found to be unsubstantiated and not connected to events that occurred in the community,” according to a phone message sent to Joliet West parents Wednesday afternoon.

The message said administrators “reviewed camera footage and identified each and every person who went in and out of the bathroom during the time in which the threat was

written.”

Gregory said the message wasn’t connected to the shooting death of 16-year-old student La’Tray Wright on Oct. 23.

Gregory said school officials were notified of the threat after several students shared photos of the message on Facebook.

School officials contacted Joliet police after discovering the message.

As a precautionary measure, Gregory said two police officers and a supervisor were stationed at the school’s north and southwest entrances and will remain there through the

end of the week.

School officials also implemented several security measures, including metal detectors, no issuance of passes and locker searches. Those extra measures will continue through Friday.

The phone message to parents also advised that administration is aware of rumors on social media of guns found during searches and a shooting on a bus. “[Joliet West] can assure you that there were no incidents of this nature that took place,” the message stated.

“But my goal right now is to work with all the board members to slow down and make sure we know exactly where we’re headed with the county.”

It was only two years ago that a surprise election win

by Bible gave Democrats the County Board advantage for the first time in more than three decades.

Since then, the 26-member board had split down the middle, with Will County Executive Larry Walsh, a Democrat, giving Democrats an edge with

the power to cast tie-breaking votes.

Republican Caucus Chair Jim Moustis said he doubts there will be much of a need for Walsh’s tie-breaking vote now.

“It certainly takes away this ‘effective majority’ Walsh gets with the tie-breaking authority,” Moustis said. Last year during budget talks, Walsh cast a rare tie-breaking vote in favor of a higher levy to help pay for capital projects.

However, the new board won’t be sworn in until December, meaning Democrats hold a majority later this month when the County Board votes on a new budget.

New and familiar faces elected to Grundy County offices SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – Grundy County’s newly elected officials – some familiar and some new faces – will take office Dec. 1.

In Tuesday’s general election, Kay Olson, D-Morris, was elected Grundy County Clerk; Lori Werden, R-Morris, was elected as Grundy County Treasurer; and Sheriff Kevin Callahan, D-Morris, retained his position, according to unofficial voting results from the Grundy County Clerk’s Office.

Voters came out in large number, compared to other elections, with 55 percent of registered voters casting ballots. Early in the day Tuesday, Grundy County Clerk Lana Phillips predicted a 54

percent turnout.

Olson is the current chief deputy clerk in the Grundy County Clerk’s office and has worked within the clerk’s office for the past 11 years.

She won the county clerk seat with 8,415 votes, according to the unofficial results.

Her opponent Mary Michael Roth, R-Morris, received 7,755 votes.

“I’m very happy and humbled with the outcome. It’s very exciting,” Olson said Tuesday night. “I give a lot of credit to the candidates that run. It’s not easy.”

Grundy County Treasurer

Werden, an office manager for Donico Inc. in Morris,

said she plans to work with elected officials and leaders to reduce taxes and spending and increase accountability in the treasurer’s office.

Werden took the treasurer’s seat with 8,511 votes.

Incumbent Marcy Miller, D-Morris, lost with 7,630 votes, according to unofficial results.

“I didn’t know what was going to happen going into today. This was a very humbling experience,” Werden said Tuesday. “Miller gave a great race and also gave 28 years of service to county residents. I appreciate all of what she has done for the county.”

test contested race, Sheriff Callahan beat his opponent, Ken Briley, R-Minooka, with 8,780 votes to Briley’s 7,587 votes, according to the unofficial results.

Callahan has spent the past three decades with the sheriff’s department, beginning as a patrol deputy in 1983. He advanced to patrol sergeant and later to a lead investigator. In 2004, he was appointed chief deputy sheriff under former Sheriff Terry Marketti.

He was appointed sheriff after Marketti’s death.

“I’d like to say I’m very proud of all the people who supported me,” Callahan said Tuesday night. “I’m very humbled by their support.”

Grundy County Board

In District 1, the Grundy County Board will have two incumbents returning and one new member. Republican Don Neushwander Jr. narrowly beat out longtime incumbent John Almer. Neushwander joins incumbents Millie Dyer and Ken Iverson in representing the district.

District 2 will see one new face. Republican Kerri Courtright joins fellow District 2 Republicans Debra Warning and David Nelson, both incumbents.

In District 3, Democrat Mike Onorato is the newcomer who joins Democrat incumbent Richard Joyce and Republican incumbent Doug Boresi. Onorato was the top vote-getter in the district.

“Because now my Friday nights are going to be waiting to hear the next crunch and see another tree along the side be knocked out,” he said.

He said regardless if the project brings “$500,000 town homes or Section 8 housing,” it would add more cars. He recommended putting stop signs at every intersection to slow traffic.

Pollos, who said she lives directly on the Par 3 golf course, said a petition has been formed in opposition to the concept plan, which has more than 220 residents signing it, she said.

“We want city council to be aware that citizens of Lockport are against this development in Broken Arrow,” she said.

LOCKPORT – Some Lockport residents are wary of plans to develop a portion of Broken Arrow Golf Club with duplexes and a new building.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, residents Mark Biggus and Michelle Pollos came to express concern over the project, with Pollos informing city officials a petition has been formed to oppose it.

City officials tabled discussion of the project for Dec. 17 by request of the petitioner.

Mayor Steven Streit said the petitioner wanted to revisit the plans. Whatever city officials and residents discuss Wednesday regarding them may not be what is presented in the future, he said.

“I think it would be prudent for us to wait to see what’s there,” he said.

But Biggus wanted to voice his concerns over the potential

level of traffic the development would bring to Broken Arrow Drive and Pollos said many members of the Arrowhead subdivision, where the golf course is located, were against the plans.

A concept plan was submitted to the city to build 26 duplexes and a 15,000 square-foot building – holding a banquet hall and cultural center – on the Par 3 portion of the golf course, located on Broken Arrow Drive. Michael Chen, the golf club’s general manager, said development has always been planned for the area.

The concept plan was presented Oct. 14 to the city’s plan and zoning commission, where they recommended approval in a 7-0 vote.

While there was no public comment, the city’s planning department has received messages from residents expressing either concern or opposition to the development.

14 Channahon makes loan to restaurant

Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon village trustees this week approved footing a low-interest loan of no more than $36,447 to a local restaurant to help the business update its infrastructure.

Lonestar Restaurant & Lounge owner Themis Sparagis said the building is on a septic system, and he is “looking to the future,” wanting to connect to village sewage. The costs, though, are large.

Construction is estimated to come in at $30,274; the tapon fee will be $3,768; and the recapture amount is $12,404, bringing the total to lay and connect the pipes to $46,447.

In the loan agreement, Sparagis agreed to contribute an immediate $10,000 to the costs and repay the loan over a period of five years at an interest rate of 1.8 percent.

Channahon village president said the restaurant’s needs were immediate, and the business has given much to the community over the years.

“There’s no giveaway here,” Cook said. “They’ll pay the fees. ... It will keep them in a position where they can stay viable. Their internal infrastructure is very, very old. ... This is an investment of a loan.”

After the meeting, Cook said this is the first time the village has loaned money to a private business.

Two trustees said they didn’t like the precedent of loaning out taxpayers’ money without particular guidelines in place.

Trustee Missey Schumacher said she would vote to approve the loan, as Lonestar was a long-term business that has supported the community, but she said the village should

set parameters now for any future considerations.

Trustee Scott McMillin was the only trustee to vote against the measure, saying there were too many unanswered questions about how far the village was willing to go to lend for infrastructure improvements. McMillin wondered out loud if loan programs would be started for other businesses or homeowners, and if there would be a limit to the number of loans offered each year.

“I think this is a discussion the board needs to have before we get into this,” he said.

After the meeting, McMillin said he supported the particular business in question, but his vote was a reflection of wanting to be a good steward of taxpayers’ dollars.

“People who vote for us expect us to use this money wisely,” he said. “We don’t need to decide this on a case-by-case basis. ... There is no program set up for this. Nothing has ever been set up for this.”

Cook said he agreed that the board needs to discuss the issue further.

Kristina dearly loved her grandchildren, and enjoyed watching them play sports and attending all their activities. She loved to travel with her husband, and did so for 18 years, and enjoyed meeting new people in her travels. She was an avid pinochle and cribbage player.

Born: June 16, 1936; in Charleston, MS Died: Nov. 1, 2014; in Joliet, IL Essie Mae Payton, age 76, born June 16, 1936. She went home to be with the Lord on November 1, 2014.

She was born and raised in Charleston, Mississippi. She moved to Chicago, in 1951. She later moved to Joliet, in 1971. Essie was united in Holy Matrimony to Marcus Lopez Payton (1952) and to this union seven children were born.

Essie Mae Payton accepted Christ at an early age, and joined the Mt. Olive M.B. Church in the summer of 1972, where she was a faithful servant and member of the Mt. Olive M.B. Church for over 40 years.

“Mother Payton” as she was called by many, extended her love and nurturing to many of her neighbors, her children’s friends and countless others. She provided childcare to numerous family and friends and later worked for the Joliet Public School system as a foster grandparent, and worked for the “Meals on Wheels” program until her health failed her.

Essie May Payton leaves to cherish, her husband, Marcus Lopez Payton (deceased); four daughters, Anita Scott (Duane) Malissa Payton, Jeannene Hammond and Daphne (Asa) Payton; three sons, Caza Payton (Debra), Terence Payton and Marcus C. Katina worked side by side as a seamstress with her late husband at JCM Uniforms (Joliet Clothing Mart).

Lifetime member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Philoptochos Society and Mykonos Society.

Thomas J. Secor, age 67, of Joliet, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014, at the University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago, after a lengthy illness.

Thomas is survived by his loving family, brother, Mark (Felicia Elias) Secor; nephew, Gregory (Heather) Secor; niece, Michelle (Matt) Herring; great nephew,

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Melba Secor (Gustat).

Thomas Secor was a lifelong professional educator and musician. He retired from Valley View Middle School, after 35 years of service as a teacher. Playing his first mass at age 12, Tom was accompanist at many churches during his 55 year music career.

He served as Music Director at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Lockport, for the past 20 years, and was also Coordinator of the “Leadership Program for Church Musicians” for the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago. He was a charter member of the American Guild of Church Organists’ Southwest Suburban Chapter. Tom was very active in Lewis University’s music and theater departments, and supports two music and theater scholarships for Lewis students.

He is a member of the Harold E. White Legacy Society. He also accompanied the Joliet Junior College Chorale for 18 years. Tom was a supporter and member of the Joliet Area Historical Museum, and served on the Museum’s finance committee. He was a member of the MENSA Society and was a test proctor. The Rotary Club recognized Tom’s deep love, commitment and leadership to his community by presenting him with the Silver Eagle Award.

Democrats confident in keeping House supermajority

CHICAGO – While they claimed victory in an expensive and contentious race for governor, Republicans appeared to fall short in their efforts to win a number of targeted Illinois House seats, and a top Democrat expressed confidence that the party would keep a veto-proof majority in the chamber.

A tight race for the state treasurer’s office, which the GOP also controlled, was still too close to call on Wednesday, and the state Board of Elections released data showing that voter turnout in this election was about average.

Democrats won the vast majority of races viewed as crucial to House Speaker Michael Madigan retaining his current one-vote majority.

After snags, last Chicago ballot cast at 3 a.m.

CHICAGO – Illinois’ experiment with allowing people to register and vote on Election Day ran into bottlenecks in Chicago, leading to lines of hundreds, including at one polling site where the last voter didn’t cast a ballot until after 3 a.m. and others just gave up.

Crowds kept entertained with cracking jokes, dancing, placing pizza orders and live-tweeting their travails. One voter pulled out a ukulele and played for hours to entertain the crowd.

But despite a jovial atmosphere, some wondered how a process that’s been done in other states for decades could have gone so badly.

Voters approve 2 amendments, 3 advisory issues

CHICAGO – Illinois voters overwhelmingly approved two constitutional amendments, ensuring that voters aren’t illegally discouraged from casting ballots and establishing regulations to give crime victims a larger role in prosecutions.

More than 3 million people cast ballots Tuesday to amend the state constitution on the two issues, and large majorities also expressed support for increasing the minimum wage, hitting millionaires with an income tax surcharge to pay for schools and requiring in-state insurance plans to cover birth control.

The voters’ rights amendment

was a Democratic response to Republican-led actions in three dozen states to require voters to show proof of identification.

The amendment bars attempting to disenfranchise anyone on the basis of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or other grounds.

The second constitutional amendment aims to ensure that victims receive necessary information about court proceedings, including hearings and plea negotiations. It would make sure victims know how to seek restitution and stay safe around alleged perpetrators.

Patterned on California’s 2008 proposition called “Marsy’s Law,” it had the backing of Democratic Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

The other ballot questions were advisory, so the results carry no weight in terms of lawmaking in the state Capitol.

Voters supported raising the minimum wage to $10 an hour from $8.25 by 2015.

The minimum wage issue became a flashpoint in the gubernatorial election. Democratic

Gov. Pat Quinn favored increasing it. GOP challenger Bruce Rauner, who initially supported cutting it, also favored it, but with other changes in the law favorable to businesses.

Dry weather fuels big gains in Illinois harvest

SPRINGFIELD – After a slow start, Illinois farmers have caught up on their harvesting of corn and soybeans.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says more than three-quarters of the state’s corn crop now has been brought in from the fields. That’s just 1 percentage point down from the average of 78 percent over the previous five years.

The USDA credits minimal precipitation with making the difference. That enabled growers to put their combines into high-gear.

That wasn’t the case weeks ago, when frequent rainfall left the fields too muddy to harvest.

The USDA says 83 percent of the state’s soybean crops

are now in the bin. That also is roughly even with the norm over the past half-decade.

October wetter than normal across Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois’ state climatologist says October was considerably wetter than the month usually is.

State climatologist Jim Angel said Tuesday the statewide average precipitation for the month was 4.5 inches. That’s 36 percent more than the 3.3 inches of precipitation Illinois usually gets for the month.

But Angel noted last month was far from the wettest October on record. That came in 1941 when 9.06 inches of precipitation were recorded.

Central Illinois received the most precipitation last month.

Angel said 6 to 8 inches of rain was common across the region.

Angel said the statewide average temperature was 54 degrees. That’s just .1 degrees above average.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Obama seeks $6.2 billion for fight against Ebola

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Wednesday asked Congress for $6.2 billion in emergency funds to confront Ebola at its source in West Africa and to secure the United States against any possible spread.

Of the total, $2 billion would be apportioned to the United States Agency for International Development, and $2.4 billion would go to the Department of Health and Human Services, the White House said. More than $1.5 billion would be for a contingency fund to deal with any unanticipated developments such as a flare-up in West Africa or a need to vaccinate U.S. health care workers.

The White House is asking for prompt action, meaning it wants approval during the current lameduck session, while Democrats are still in control of the Senate.

Uncle: Mom of boy found dead got psychiatric care

GRANTS PASS, Ore. – An uncle of a 6-year-old autistic boy found dead after his mother told police she threw him from a bridge on the Oregon Coast said the woman had been under intense emotional distress for years while caring for the child and more recently for her disabled husband.

Andy McCabe said Wednesday that Jillian McCabe seemed better after 30 days of in-patient psychiatric care last winter.

He said the family struggled fi-

nancially after his brother, Matt McCabe, no longer could work.

The body of London McCabe was found Monday hours after his mother phoned 911 and said she had thrown him from the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport.

She has not entered pleas to charges of aggravated murder, murder and manslaughter.

Fish tale: Supreme Court and the missing grouper

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia thinks something smells rotten about the way prosecutors went after a Florida fisherman who threw undersized grouper off his boat.

The conviction of commercial fisherman John Yates for destroying evidence seemed to trouble Scalia and several of his colleagues Wednesday as they questioned why the government brought charges under a law meant to tackle corporate fraud in the wake of the Enron accounting scandal.

A jury agreed that Yates dumped the fish to impede an investigation into whether they were under the legal minimum catch size in the Gulf of Mexico, and Yates ended up serving 30 days in jail. But critics have derided the case as an example of government overreach.

The Obama administration said it simply was enforcing the plain language of a law prohibiting destruction of “any tangible object” during a federal investigation.

Obama vowing to ‘get the job done’ with Republicans

WASHINGTON – One day after sweeping Republican election gains, President Barack Obama and incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged Wednesday to try to turn divided government into a force for good rather than gridlock, yet warned of veto showdowns as well.

Trade legislation loomed as one possibility for quick compromise, and immigration as an early irritant.

“There is no doubt that Republicans had a good night,” the president said at the White House, referring to big gains that left the GOP in control of the Senate, with an expanded House majority and in possession of a handful of governorships formerly in Democratic hands.

To voters who handed the GOP control of Congress, he said, “I hear you. ... It’s time for us to take care of business.” He cited construction of roads, bridges and other facilities as one area ripe for

cooperation, and trade as another.

At the same time, he said, “Congress will pass some bills I cannot sign. I’m pretty sure I will take some actions that some in Congress will not like.”

Obama and McConnell presented differing profiles at news conferences a little more than an hour apart.

The 53-year-old president now faces a Congress under two-house control by Republicans for the first time in his tenure – and a lame-duck status that becomes more of a check on his political power with each passing day.

McConnell, 72 and famously taciturn, smiled and joked with reporters on the day after achieving a lifelong ambition.

Still, the two said they had had a pleasant telephone conversation earlier in the day.

“I would enjoy having some Kentucky bourbon with Mitch McConnell,” said Obama, who once joked at a black-tie dinner that the Kentucky senator wouldn’t be much of a drinking buddy.

Said McConnell, “In our system the president is the most important player” who can veto legislation or persuade lawmakers of his own party to back compromise.

Obama said that unless Congress takes action by the end of the year, he will order a reduction in deportations of working immigrants living in the country illegally.

He made his pledge a short while after McConnell warned him against acting unilaterally. “It’s like waving a red flag in front of a bull to say if you guys don’t do what I want, I’m going to do it on my own,” McConnell said at a news conference in Kentucky.

McConnell also cited trade and taxes among areas ripe for compromise.

“There will be no government shutdown or default on the national debt,” he said, making clear he doesn’t agree with some tea party-backed lawmakers who have supported one or the other in the past – or may want to in the future.

McConnell will take office in January as Senate majority leader.

Robert Sherman, the U.S. Ambassador to Portugal, is using his showmanship and sense of humor on road trips to spread the word about the potential benefits of a project President Barack Obama wants to leave as his legacy in international commerce.

But many Europeans remain skeptical. They worry a deal may erode their cher-

ished laws on environmental protection or labor security. Some say it will open the door to genetically modified “Frankenfood,” surrender power to big corporations, strip away workers’ rights and industry subsidies, and endanger public services.

The EU’s new trade chief said recently she was struck by the “intense concern” felt in Europe about what would be the world’s single largest free trade agreement.

Add to that a backlash over U.S. spying and the initial coyness of EU officials in disclosing what was on the negotiating table, and the battle for public opinion is on.

“I think it’s important for people to understand the advantages of (an agreement),” Sherman said on a recent trip to meet businessmen and officials in Coimbra, Portugal’s third-largest city. “Over the long run, having a vibrant

trade relationship ... will advantage companies on both sides of the Atlantic,” the Massachusetts lawyer said.

The U.S. ambassador to Stockholm, Mark Brzezinski, had the same aim when he recently biked across Sweden to promote the deal, called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – known as TTIP. Also, American embassies in Germany and the Netherlands have offered grants for local projects that build awareness of TTIP. U.S. and EU officials who back the talks, which started in July 2013, trumpet TTIP as a potential bonanza. It could boost the EU’s economy by $150 billion and the U.S. economy by $113 billion, they said.

“I’m very optimistic about (TTIP),” said Jose Camarinha, the industrial washing machine salesman. “I think it will be a trade revolution.”

COTONOU, Benin – With nearly 5,000 dead of Ebola in West Africa, the World Health Organization elected a new director Wednesday of its Africa office, which has been accused of bungling the response to the outbreak in its early stages.

The new chief, Matshidiso Moeti, is a doctor from Botswana and a WHO veteran who stepped down as deputy director for Africa in March.

The results of the five-candidate election were made public at a meeting of the U.N. agency in Benin and came amid the worst outbreak of the dreaded disease ever seen.

“I hope, with all the control efforts that are now in place, Matshidiso the situation Moeti will have improved by the time I take office in February,” Moeti said.

Moeti is unlikely to play a major role in ending the disaster, since the United Nations already has taken more direct charge of the control efforts.

But she could be key to preventing another such crisis.

She said the health systems in hard-hit Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea have been devastated and need to be rebuilt and that warning and monitoring capabilities must be improved to deal with any future outbreaks of Ebola.

In an internal draft document obtained by The Associated Press last month, WHO accused its Africa office of initially botching the response to Ebola, deriding many of its regional staff members as “politically motivated appointments.” The report said WHO staff in Africa refused to help get visas for outside experts and compromised the containment effort in other ways.

The outgoing regional director, Dr. Luis Sambo of Angola, is completing his second five-year term and was ineligible to run again.

JERUSALEM – A Hamas militant slammed a minivan into a crowd waiting for a train Wednesday in Jerusalem, killing one person and injuring 13. Hours later, the Israeli military said a Palestinian motorist drove into a group of soldiers in the West Bank, injuring three.

The incidents and a similar attack two weeks earlier raised concern that Israel could be facing a new type of threat. Police said they would put concrete barricades in front of train stations as a first step.

Police identified the van’s driver – who was killed by police – as Ibrahim al-Akari, a 38-year-old Palestinian. His wife said he was angered by a confrontation between police and Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque earlier in the day in which part of the shrine was damaged.

Hamas praised the van attack as a defense of the mosque, which is part of a complex in the city’s most sensitive and sacred site –

“Holy sites should not become the sites of tension, and concrete steps need to be taken now by all sides to de-escalate this situation,” Kerry said, noting that the U.S. was in touch with both Jordan and Israel and hoped that “all parties will draw back and reduce these tensions.”

He spoke after meeting with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh in Paris, where Kerry said they discussed the tensions across Jerusalem.

The developments raised fears of worsening violence after months of simmering tensions in the holy city and injected new religious fervor into a wave of unrest fueled by failed peace efforts and stepped-up Jewish settlement construction.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed the Jerusalem attack on incitement stemming from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and “his Hamas partners,” a reference to a unity government led by Abbas and backed by the Islamic militant group.

The first sign something was going very wrong at Nordstrom was the couple running up the down escalator. They were the herald to avoid the man with the rifle just below. It was at that moment that the gunshot-like sounds we just had heard made sense, and a long night began for what would seem like every law enforcement agent in New Jersey.

That first Monday in November last year ended in the early hours of Tuesday, when 20-year-old Richard Shoop was found in a remote part of the Garden State Plaza with a self-inflicted gunshot to his head.

I think of him often, not just because I had been just a few yards away from him that night, but because the agony he must have been living through was not his alone. He was battling some demon, whether it was clinical depression or the dark choices we can so often hellishly settle for when the lights of faith, hope and love have all seemed to fade.

As October 2014 ended, Pope Francis talked about the devil. That’s not because he was getting into Halloween, but because the first reading designated for Masses Oct. 30 was from St. Paul to the Ephesians, urging us to put on the full spiritual armor of God for the power to resist temptation.

During his morning homily, the pope said: “Life is a military endeavor. Christian life is a battle, a beautiful battle, because when God emerges victorious in every step of our life, this gives us joy, a great happiness: the joy that the Lord is the victor within us, with his free gift of salvation. But we’re all a bit lazy, aren’t we, in this battle and we allow ourselves to get carried away by our passions, by various temptations.

This matters because the devil is in the details of so many of our most contentious debates. Acknowledging that would help

Even as another scurrilous election season brings claims that seeking to protect innocent human life and religious liberty is akin to waging a “war on women,” real oppression exists. As a nation and a culture, we settle for evils that poison our interactions, our policies and our ability to lead with optimism. So when we see evil, we look away, seek to explain it away, or pretend we can legislate it away. Law is a teacher, but it needs students who see the law’s source, too.

The media doesn’t only miss the point on matters of faith when it comes to reporting on Pope Francis.

Asked about the recent Synod of Bishops on the Family, Philadelphia’s Archbishop Charles Chaput said, “I think confusion is of the devil, and I think the public image that came across was of confusion.” That was reported as Chaput having blasted the synod as being of the devil. Oy. Chaput also said: “None of us are welcome on our own terms in the Church; we’re welcome on Jesus’ terms. That’s what it means to be a Christian – you submit yourself to Jesus and his teaching, you don’t recreate your own body of spirituality.”

The devil is in the distractions, in the indifference they breed and the way they keep us from being on guard for evil in our midst in even the most subtle and mundane ways. Discerning such details in daily life prepares us when danger comes and darkness falls.

The examined life helps us see clearer what’s happening, not just when faced with a man with a rifle in a mall, but before he ever gets to that point, so that we might help him confront the damned devil head-on.

Cooperation will be key for Gov. Rauner

Illinois voters have spoken, and they have elected a new governor in Illinois.

Bruce Rauner defeated Gov. Pat Quinn. Come January, a Republican will hold the state’s top office for the first time since 2003, when the now-imprisoned Rod Blagojevich took office from the no-longer-imprisoned George Ryan.

The result shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, even in blue-state Illinois. Quinn’s more than five years in office have been a failure in policy and leadership.

Illinois is bleeding jobs. Illinois has the worst credit rating of any state in the nation. Illinois also has a worst-in-the-nation public pension deficit of $100 billion. Deadbeat state government owes social service agencies, school districts and other employers about $5 billion for work completed months ago. Illinois’ worker’s compensation costs are fourth-worst in the U.S., driving businesses and jobs elsewhere.

Voters sent the message that they’re tired of the same old fiscal policies of tax and spend.

Enter Rauner. His policies of lower taxes and smaller government give

the state hope. The successful Winnetka businessman now has his work cut out for him. He’s promised to shake up Springfield and significantly elevate our state’s dismal standing.

He must deliver.

Rauner is in the spotlight and will have to prove he has the savvy and political ability to turn this state around. And for that to happen, it’s going to take Rauner to work with the Democrats who run the General Assembly – House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton.

Gridlock will not solve our problems. Rauner recognizes that. So much so that he called Madigan and Cullerton on Tuesday before giving his victory speech.

“I said to them, ‘This is an opportunity for us to work together. This is an opportunity for us to come together on a bipartisan basis,’” Rauner said on stage during this victory speech.

For Rauner to accomplish anything, working together will be paramount. We’ve seen how savvy Rauner the candidate can be. Now we need to see how effective Rauner the governor can be.

“It’s day to day, that’s all we can say,” Sharp said. “We’ll see how he feels. It will be the doctors’ decision.

“He looks good doing what he’s doing, but we’re definitely not going to put him in harm’s way. If anything, we will be on the side of caution.”

Should the Hilltoppers play without Earl and win, Sharp said he has a much stronger feeling his quarterback will return for the quarterfinals.

In Earl’s absence, JCA has gone 3-0, including a 4813 win over St. Laurence in the playoff opener. Wingback Michael Johnson has run the double-wing offense from shotgun formation – the “Hillcat,”

The Hilltoppers (8-2) will have another shot when they entertain Montini (7-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in a Class 5A second-round game.

“In the past, our second-round games may not have been against marquee opponents like this,” Sharp said. “In that sense, there’s a different feel. This has more of the feel of a huge game, like a semifinal atmosphere.

“We know it will be hard-hitting, wire to wire, tooth and nail. It’s just interesting that it is happening this soon.”

The question swirling around the JCA camp is whether junior quarterback Cade Earl will play. He has been out since suffering a PCL injury late in the 24-21 Week 7 loss at Nazareth. He had been enjoying an excellent season.

Sharp said Earl is throwing at practice this week and has looked good, but that’s a far cry from saying he will be ready to go Saturday.

“That’s a credit to Chase’s skill level,” Sharp said “If his priority were defensive line, I think he would be one of the best in the state.”

Whether Earl plays Saturday or not, the key to victory against Montini is no secret.

“I’ve never seen a game like this that does not come down to blocking and tackling,” Sharp said. “We have to do those things better. Montini always has great line play. The line on both sides of the ball will determine if we win or lose. That’s especially true in our situation, where we don’t know about Cade (Earl).”

Along with the line play, there’s another key.

“We have to stay away from negative plays,” Sharp said.

“We can’t be moving the ball 5, 6, 7 yards a crack and then have a penalty that ruins the drive. We have to keep their offense off the field.”

Quarterback Chuck Norgle, sophomore tailback Prince Walker and the usual cast of outstanding receivers make Montini’s offense formidable. The Hilltoppers feel the best place for the Broncos’ skill players is on the sideline watching.

“I would call this a typical Montini team,” Sharp said.

“They don’t have some of the big names they had in years past, but they have guys who are every bit the player. I would say they are in a reload mode.”

IHSA CROSS COUNTRY STATE FINALS

Area runners hope to finish strong at state

cherron@shawmedia.com While many cross-country runners aspire to be on a trophy-winning team or among the medal winners in each race at Saturday’s IHSA finals at Peoria’s Detweiller Park, for most competitors, just getting the chance to run there is a fitting culmination to a successful season.

As usual, the Joliet area will be well-represented, especially in the Class 3A races at the picturesque park not far from the Illinois River.

Five of the area’s eight competing squads will be in the large school races, as will 12 of the 18 individuals who advanced. Races run hourly from 9 a.m., starting with Class 1A. In the girls race, Minooka will be making its seventh straight trip after winning the Quincy Sectional title.

Coach Kevin Gummerson’s squad consists of Ashley Tutt, Mackenzie Callahan, Morgan Crouch, Emily Shelton, Gaby Gall, Emily Ellis and Caitlin Kurtz.

“These girls are excited about the opportunity to compete on the biggest stage in the state of Illinois,” Gummerson said. “They have worked hard, are confident and are not satisfied with simply qualifying. They are hungry to put together their best race of the season.”

Lockport is headed to Peoria for the sixth year in a row and the 21st time for coach Evon Schlotter. The Porters feature Morgan Bollinger, Emmie Hahn, Karlee Stortz, Haley Beaumont, Aubrey Friedrich, Alicia Ary and Emily Stoklosa.

Coach Matt Almon’s Joliet West girls team also will be competing. The combined JT program advanced in 1994, and this is the Tigers’ first appearance since 1992.

The Tigers consist of Kiersten Perry, Charlotte Youell, Madeline Blaauw, Guadalupe Diaz, Jacqueline Rocha, Courtney Rubino and Pamela Sanchez.

Individual runners in the Class 3A meet are Plainfield North’s Rachael Lau, Plainfield South’s Alexis Grigg, Bolingbrook’s Trianna Rodriguez and Arianna Amill, Lincoln-Way Central’s Gretchen Zirgaitis and Elizabeth Venezio, and Providence’s Kirsten Schultz.

Last year, Bollinger placed eighth, Lau was 24th, and Tutt finished 26th.

In the 3A boys race, coach John Taylor’s Lincoln-Way Central squad will be making their fourth straight trip. The Knights feature Tommy Kolacki, Ian Peterson, Ben Alvarado, Andrew Robbins, Zak Hutchinson, Jack-

“The running Knights are having an outstanding season,” Taylor said.

“Our key to our team success at the state meet will be racing together as a unit. ‘One Goal’ has been our motto for this season, and the Knights are finishing strong down the home stretch.”

Coach Doug Cherry has led his Joliet Central squad to state for the second year in a row. The Steelmen squad consists of Raul Rosendo, Vince Moreno, Andre Martinez, Jose Aguilera, Justin Casillas, AJ Stewack and Jaime Quintero.

“Our guys stepped up and ran very well under the pressure of the sectional meet,” Cherry said. “Each of our guys passed at least one runner in the last half-mile (some passed five or more) to move us into the fifth-place spot.

“We are excited to get back to the state meet and are looking forward to running well as a team there. Raul has been very consistent all year, and we look for him to continue his string of solid races. The rest of our pack is looking to close up the gap after Raul.

We will be happy if we race the last two miles aggressively and run PRs (personal records).”

Other individuals in that race are Plainfield East’s Sergio Llanes, Plainfield North’s Jack Sebok, Minooka’s Gabe Ceballos and Soren Knudsen and Joliet West’s Dan Treasure.

In Class 2A, coach Tim Plotke’s Lemont girls return to state for the first time since 2011 after claiming top honors at the Wheaton Academy Sectional.

Their squad features Taylor Campos, Beata Drozda, Bridget Kunkel, Gabby Voltarel, Celine Ratulowski,

Claire Gagen and Jorie Dybcio.

“This is the best team I have coached in my 22 years here at Lemont,” Plotke said. “They understand that racing should hurt if you are challenging yourself. Instead of fearing the pain, they embrace the challenge. Every single day, they strive to become better. Our top five has been consistent all season long averaging a 40-second 1-to-5 split. The last few weeks, we have had a different No. 1 runner leading the pack. They are looking stronger and are excited to see what they can accomplish at the state meet on Saturday.”

Others in the 2A field include Morris’ Mya Shannon and Lincoln-Way West’s Natalie Krol in the girls race and West’s Evan Mitchell and Mitch Feehan in the boys competition.

In Class 1A, Gardner-South Wilmington’s Daly Galloway took third a year ago and is one of the favorites in the girls race. Seneca is making its first trip since 2004 with Eva Bruno, Carina Collett, Sarah Virgo, Sarah Cameron, Eve Odum, Emily Misener and Karlie Punke.

Peotone’s boys will be making their first state appearance with Jake Chisausky, Kyle Jones, Zach Crocker, Will Gaskin, Ben Carter, Nick Stefinsky and Sean O’Dell. Seneca’s Ross McCormick will also be in the boys race.

Hendrick to pay $185,000 in fines for crew fight THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Hendrick Motorsports will pay the $185,000 in fines levied against six crew members for their role in a post-race fight at Texas between Jeff Gordon and Brad Keselowski.

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Despite a 35-point, 17-rebound night from senior Katie Gonnering, University of St. Francis fell to 0-2 on the season as host Bethel (Ind.) defeated the Saints, 85-72, in nonconference women’s basketball action Tuesday night.

St. Francis held a slim lead for most of the first half, but the Pilots (2-2) closed out the half with a 7-0 run to take a 3731 lead at the intermission.

USF scored the first six points of the second half to even the score at 37, but Bethel answered with a 15-3 run to build a 52-40 lead with 11:11 remaining. The Saints got no closer than eight points the rest of the night.

Kaitlin Elsasser led the Pilots with 20 points Gonnering was the lone Saint to score in double figures.

The Saints return to action Friday at the Indiana Wesleyan Leah Whittaker Memorial Tournament, where they will take on the No. 3-ranked host Wildcats in the opening round.

Bears’ defense prepares to try to slow down Rodgers

jarnold@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Willie Young once had a private conversation with Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

What was said between the two will remain top secret, Young said Wednesday, until the veteran defensive end who leads the Bears in sacks this season actually adds Rodgers to the list of quarterbacks he has gotten to over the course of his five-year NFL career.

Doing that, Young and his teammates understand, is easier said that done. Even though Rodgers has been sacked 20 times this season – including once in the Packers 38-17 win over the Bears in Week 4 – getting to Rodgers will be a priority Sunday at Lambeau Field.

But as Young has discovered, putting pressure on Rodgers and actually finishing him off are two different things. It’s part of what makes Aaron Rodgers, well, Aaron Rodgers.

“Everybody in the league, everybody in the United States of America knows about this guy Rodgers,” Young said Wednesday at Halas Hall. “...

He doesn’t do anything anything wrong.”

So how do the Bears add to the 252 times Rodgers has been sacked during his career?

“You’ve got do the best you can to get there,” Young said.

“It has not changed one bit.

He’s doing the things he does on Sundays consistently day in and day out so it’s a challenge. It’s competition.”

Rodgers has owned the Bears of late, winning the past nine games that he started and finished against them. Asked how the Bears managed to have success against Green Bay last season at Lambeau Field, Bears linebacker Lance Briggs responded quickly and with brutal honesty.

“Shea (McClellin) took out Aaron Rodgers,” Briggs said Wednesday.

If anyone has the secret to understanding Rodgers, it’s Jared Allen.

Allen has registered 15.5 sacks against the Packers since 2008. Allen, who missed the

Week 4 game against the Packers because of pneumonia, said the key to containing Rodgers is to try to make him one-dimensional and to force the Packers into third-and-long situations.

But then there’s dealing with Rodgers, who was 22 of 28 for 302 yards and four touchdowns against the Bears in September at Soldier Field. In addition to defending against Rodgers’ quick release, Allen said that much of trying to keep him in check comes down to understanding what his game is all about.

It’s something Allen has spent a career doing.

“You’ve got to know Aaron – you’ve got to study him and know what he’s going to do,” Allen said Wednesday. “He will

give you shots to get to him because he has the ability to go down the field at any given time and he’ll take those shots on you.

“So you’ve got to keep rushing and you can’t get tired of, three-step, three-step, ball out, ball out, ball out, ball out, ball out. It’s just a game youv’e got to play.”

As the Bears discovered in the loss earlier this season, they can’t allow Rodgers the time to sit in the pocket and pick the defense apart. This season, Rodgers has completed 67.6 percent of his passes and has been only intercepted three times while throwing for 19 touchdowns.

Despite the Bears’ inability to pressure Rodgers in Week 4, Rodgers expects a different story Sunday when the Bears will look to start the season’s second half with a victory.

“I think any time you’re playing a team that is coming off the bye, you have to expect some unscouted looks,” Rodgers said in a conference call with Chicago beat reporters on Wednesday. “That’s just the way teams

do it. We make adjustments in our bye week, teams made adjustments in their bye week.

“So you always know when you’re playing a team in this situation, you have to expect some things you haven’t seen in a while – or maybe some things you haven’t seen this year. That’s just the way this league goes.”

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said with both the Bears and Packers coming off a bye week – not to mention facing one another for the second time this season – his team will be ready for a different look than what it got when Green Bay used to second-half rally to pull away from the Bears.

“The fact (is) that you’ve got two teams that are very familiar with each other,” McCarthy said in a conference call with Bears reporters. “You just watch the way the players go about the competition, it’s a product of playing each other.”

And for the Bears defense, that means understanding what it is going to get on Sunday from Rodgers.

Allen said he and his teammates will do their best to play to Rodgers’ weaknesses – which as Young can attest to – aren’t high in number. But if the Bears hope to leave Lambeau with a victory while snapping Rodgers’ personal run of success against the Bears, they know it will start with making Rodgers feel uncomfortable.

Joliet church has witnessed changes and renewal throughout its 95 years By the year

JOLIET – We’re going ‘round again.

So said the Rev. Stephen D. Deloney, pastor at St. Mark C.M.E. in Joliet, as the church prepares to celebrate its 95th anniversary Sunday.

The theme is “Transfiguration.”

In its early years, Deloney said, St. Mark was an active church filled with young people. By contrast, when Deloney was assigned to St. Mark in 1999, its 80 to 100 members were mostly age 60 and older.

Today, St. Mark has few seniors and more youth and young adults, Deloney said.

Overall, the generations relate well to each other, with the young adults taking on the responsibilities that once belonged to the elders – increasing their commitment to the church, he said – and the elders training their successors.

“We’re seeing a transformation, and it’s a wonderful thing to behold,” Deloney said. “When you change like that, it’s like starting over.”

Having been raised by older parents – Deloney is the youngest of 11 children; his father was 50 and his mother was in her 40s when he was born – Deloney was comfortable serving an older population.

But Deloney also knew St. Mark needed young people, and he believed St. Mark could minister to them. Acting on that belief, he said, the church purchased additional property so that it now owns half a block. When the time came to expand, St. Mark would be ready.

With the extra space, St. Mark initiated an annual “Back to School Community Fest,” held in August and now in its 10th year. The fest

That welcoming attitude is the same reason Mattie Clark joined St. Mark in 1953.

After two services, Clark knew she had found her church home. Everyone addressed each other in familial terms, such as “aunt” or “cousin.” And Clark did the same.

“It was just like a family,” Clark said. “There was so much love and giving and sharing there.”

The biggest challenge St. Mark faces is finding ways to engage today’s young adults, despite the various ministries St. Mark now has to meet their spiritual needs. Because of societal changes, today’s young adults are pulled in multiple directions and have fewer hours in their day to devote to activities outside work and family, Deloney said.

And yet, Clark knows that the present members of St.

Mark can continue the vision of the original 13 members from 95 years ago, one of ministering to the sick and praising the Lord. During a Nov. 2 concert, which attracted everyone from youth to seniors, St. Mark had a Holy Spirit renewal, Clark said.

“We were all together as one,” Clark said. “It was the like the old spirit of St. Mark was there.”

JOLIET – Mt. Ebal Missionary Baptist Church, 221 Cameron Ave. Lockport, will commemorate jubilee services at 11 a.m.

At the morning service, a portion of Cameron Avenue – which has been named after the founding pastor, the Rev. Theodore H. Pinnick – will be dedicated.

The prayer service begins at 8:30 a.m. in the school gymnasium and kicks off the homecoming event.

High schoolers, who are alumni of the school, are then invited to stay for a catered breakfast and other activities including classroom visits, raffle prizes and a “pin game” in the gym.

Last year – with more than 50 alumni in attendance along with the entire student body, faculty and staff of St. Mary School – veterans received a memorable and patriotic tribute complete with a color guard.

Wodehouse did not loaf later in life; he wrote incessantly. But the key word there is “five” -- look at this auction. What do you think of it?

I hope not a lot! First, perhaps North should have responded one notrump, but especially since he was a passed hand, one can understand two clubs. Now, though, South should not have rebid two spades. Never rebid in a five-card suit unless you have absolutely nothing better to do. Here, South, knowing his side did not have game values, should have passed over two clubs. (Agreed, he might have raised to three clubs, because on a better layout of the East-West cards, three no-trump would have been makable.)

Against two spades, West led the diamond seven, second-highest from a weak suit. East won with his king and returned a diamond. South won with his jack, cashed the spade ace (a questionable play), and led a low heart to dummy’s queen. East took the trick and inaccurately tried to give West a diamond ruff. (If South had four diamonds, he probably would have rebid two diamonds, not two spades.)

Declarer discarded his club eight, but then misguessed by finessing his club jack.

West won and gave his partner a club ruff. When East returned a heart, South won and played a trump, but West won, gave his partner another club ruff with his spade jack, and received a heart ruff in return for down two.

Let’s start with safety.

Side effects are possible from any medical treatment, including vaccines. But extensive studies have shown that the HPV vaccine is safe for the vast majority of people.

You may also worry that getting the vaccine will give your daughter the green light to have sex. I’m not aware of any evidence that kids given this vaccine are more likely to have sex as teens than kids who aren’t given the vaccine.

This vaccine is about cancer, not sex. The idea is to give the vaccine well before any sexual activity -- and exposure to HPV -- begins.

The HPV vaccine has already had a big impact.

A study published in 2013 showed that since doctors began to routinely give the HPV vaccine in 2006, the occurrence of the cancer-causing HPV strains covered by the vaccine has dropped by 56 percent in girls ages 14 to 19 years.

Remember, though, that the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV. It is not an absolute guarantee against cervical cancer. As your daughter gets older, she still should get screened for cervical cancer even if she has the HPV vaccine.

The bottom line is that a series of three shots will protect your daughter from a form of cancer that can cause premature death.

That’s a gift any parent would want to give his or her child.

I’m not sure. Is there evidence the HPV vaccine has some real benefit?

Dear reader: Yes, there is evidence – overwhelming evidence. And with this vaccine, the benefit is not that it will reduce the risk of a short-lived illness, like the flu. This vaccine will reduce your daughter’s risk of getting a common and life-threatening cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. The linkage of this virus to cancer, and the ability of a vaccine against the virus to reduce the risk of cancer, are solidly established. So much so, in fact, that the discovery of HPV’s connection to cervical cancer was honored with the Nobel Prize.

There are two different forms of the HPV vaccine, Cervarix and Gardasil. Both are safe and effective. The Cervarix vaccine protects against two HPV types, which cause 70 percent of cervical cancers.

The Gardasil vaccine protects against these two types as well as two others, which cause 90 percent of genital warts. Gardasil also has been shown to protect against cancers of the vulva, vagina and anus.

Vaccination is recommended for girls aged 11 to 12 years. But it may be given as early as age 9. The vaccine is also recommended for females 13 to 26 who did not get the vaccine earlier.

The vaccine is given as three injections over a six-month period. (Vaccination with Gardasil also is recommended for boys ages 11 or 12, to prevent anal cancer and genital warts.)
