The Associated Press CHICAGO – Republican businessman Bruce Rauner has unseated Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, ending Democrats’ 12-year grip on President Barack Obama’s home state.

The matchup between the Winnetka venture capitalist and the Chicago Democrat was among the most competitive and costly nationwide. Rauner’s win helps the GOP complete a nearsweep of Midwest governorships.

Bruce Combined, the candi- Rauner dates have spent about $100 million, with much of the money flooding TV and radio with a record number of campaign ads.

Preliminary results of an exit poll conducted for The Associated Press and television networks showed Quinn was getting support from Chicago, people earning less than $50,000 a year and those who strongly approved of President Barack Obama’s performance. Rauner was faring well in Chicago’s collar counties and central and southern Illinois, and among white voters and those who believe government is doing too many things that should be left to businesses

and individuals.

Several voters said the most pressing issue was unease about the state’s economy and its financial footing. For others, the choice came down to party loyalty, personality, their stance toward organized labor and which candidate seemed more in touch with everyday people.

John Ray, a lifelong Democrat and retired union painter from Springfield, said he was so disenchanted with Illinois’ economic course that he made the leap for Rauner, a first-time candidate promising to use his experience as a private equity Pat investor to create jobs and Quinn prosperity.

“I just wanted to see what the change would be,” said Ray, 73.

Others saw the best path as sticking with Quinn, a political veteran who casts himself as an outsider-reformer. Quinn took office during a recession and inherited a host of problems following the ouster of his now-imprisoned predecessor, Rod Blagojevich.

Some voters noted Quinn’s support of unions. Several labor unions worked against Rauner, who’s vowed to take on “government union bosses.”

University of Illinois freshman Sarah Blanco said she voted for Quinn because

her mother is a teacher.

“Unions are very important to me, and Bruce Rauner isn’t very supportive of that,” she said after voting in Urbana.

For others, Illinois’ reputation for cronyism and corruption meant the bar was low, and political fatigue and disillusionment were real.

Georgine Pintarich, 86, voted for Rauner in suburban Arlington Heights.

“The fact that he hasn’t held office before doesn’t bother me,” she said. “I know one thing: He’s not doing it for the money.”

But others weren’t so sure, saying they were comfortable with Quinn and his attention to issues affecting everyday people.

“I respect him a little more,” said Rodney Lane, a 41-year-old mechanic from Chicago. Rauner doesn’t “seem genuine to me. To me, it’s just an act with him.

With Quinn, he is like one of us, like he likes to work at McDonald’s.”

The candidates voted near their homes, with Quinn making a last-minute effort throughout the day with stops at Chicago-area universities and train stations. Rauner spent time with his family and thanked supporters.

Officials reported some problems at polling places in Cook and Lake counties, but it was too soon to tell what impact they would have on the election.

Batinick takes Cross’ 97th seat; Walsh Jr. and Manley re-elected

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Another Republican was elected to fill the 97th House seat vacated by Tom Cross in his run for treasurer.

Voters chose Plainfield Republican Mark Batinick to become the new representative for the district, according to preliminary election results.

“Filling Tom’s shoes is going to be a huge, impossible task,” Batinick said, adding that Cross was a big help with fundraising for his campaign.

“I think politicians spend too much time campaigning, not governing. I look forward to offering up my ideas to fellow caucus members.”

Incumbent Democrats who won big Tuesday included state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Joliet, in the 86th District, and Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Jo-

liet, in the 98th District.

Batinick received 11,224 votes, or 56.5 percent of Will County votes in 43 precincts to take the seat over Shorewood Democrat Moira Dunn, who received 8,646 votes from Will County.

Kendall County voters voted in favor of Batinick as well with 3,946 votes in 21 precincts. Dunn received 2,814 Kendall County votes.

Batinick owns his own real estate business in Plainfield. He has been a member of the Plainfield and Oswego chambers of commerce and chairman of “For the Good of Illinois” political action committee.

He received a degree in business education from the University of Illinois and unsuccessfully ran for Will County auditor.

He lives in Plainfield with

his wife and five kids, and has coached youth basketball and soccer teams. He said he wants to make sure Illinois is competitive with border states.

Batinick ran his campaign on a 39-page plan in which he outlines what he will focus on as a state representative.

His primary goal is to create jobs in the district and across the state. Other important issues for Batinick include alleviating property taxes and increasing funding for social services to the mentally ill.

In other races for state representative, preliminary results have John Anthony beating Martha Shugart for the 75th District, Margo McDermed winning the 37th District, and Al Riley for the 38th District.

The 79th District was a dead heat between Glenn Nixon and Katherine Cloonen.

Results were close late Tuesday, with Republican Ken Kaupas clinging to a more than 240 vote lead over Democrat Mike Kelley.

Kaupas had 92,979 votes to Kelley’s 92,737 votes, according to unofficial vote totals from the Will County Clerk’s Office.

Kaupas, the Will County Sheriff Office’s deputy chief of investigations and media spokesman, is the second cousin of Paul Kaupas, who has been sheriff for 12 years.

“Either way this race gave me another opportunity to throw off the cover of Paul Kaupas’ cousin,” Ken Kaupas said. “After 31 years of law enforcement I’ve earned my own name.”

Mike Kelley said he was still waiting on the absentee votes. He said he would have to “see what the numbers are first,” before deciding if he wants a recount on the votes.

“I got an overwhelming amount of support from within the department,” Kelley said Tuesday night. “[During the campaign] I met a lot of great people, but these are the guys who came out and said ‘We’re behind you.’ That’s satisfying in itself.”

Tuesday’s results do not include absentee ballots postmarked before Nov. 4 but received after Election Day or valid provisional ballots cast Monday or Election Day. The final vote tally won’t be known until Nov. 18 when provisional ballots and a small portion of Aurora that is inside Will County is included. All votes will become official Nov. 25 when the county clerk’s office certifies the election.

Kelley, a lifelong Lockport resident, has been a

sheriff’s deputy for 26 years and is currently a sergeant in the investigations section.

Sheriff’s deputies are currently scheduled for eighthour shifts, but Kelley felt switching to 10- or 12-hour shifts has overlapping manpower at busier times.

Kelly also wanted to have foreclosure sales brought under the auspices of the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office. He claims bringing operations in-house will save enough money to hire more correctional deputies to reduce overtime costs.

Kaupas, a Shorewood resident who grew up in Chicago and Lemont, served 26 years with the Illinois State Police as a trooper and investigator. He retired in 2009 after five years commanding the state police district that includes Will County.

Kaupas said it was meeting people one-on-one while campaigning that made the biggest impression on him.

“I’d never run for office before and I really didn’t know what to expect,” Kaupas said Tuesday. “I’ve met a lot of fantastic people in the last 18 months. Some were for me.

Some were against me, but they all shared concerns for what happens in our county.”

Kaupas wanted a new centralized headquarters built to address storage concerns and improve communication.

Kaupas also planned to prioritize recruiting and training replacements for a large number of deputies and civilian staff hired as the department expanded in the early ’90s who will be eligible for retirement during the next sheriff’s tenure.

Park referendum wins in a landslide

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Voters overwhelmingly backed a referendum to raise taxes for Joliet park improvements Tuesday.

The Joliet Park District referendum had support from 70 percent of the voters with all but one of 54 precincts reporting. There were 12,738 yes votes to 5,807 no votes, according to unofficial vote totals from the Will County Clerk’s website.

Park board President Glen Marcum said the additional funding will help make Joliet parks “state of the art.”

“I feel like it’s going to benefit all parts of Joliet: East Side, West Side. It will help older people and younger kids,” Marcum said.

The referendum was backed by a citizens’ group called “Vote Yes Protect Our Parks,” which posted signs throughout town.

Dominic Egizio, the park district’s executive director, said he was excited about the immense support the referendum was getting while voters were still being counted Tues-

“I think a lot of people have said what makes a great community is great schools and great parks, and I think this will be a benefit for every Joliet resident,” he said.

Park officials asked residents to approve issuing $19.5 million in bonds that would be used for capital improvements throughout the district.

The average taxpayer would pay $20 to $21 more per year per $100,000 of assessed value of property, on top of what is paid now to the park district.

The referendum was proposed because Joliet park officials noticed facilities have suffered due to the park district being subject to a tax cap for more than two decades.

Bad night for most other referendums, but Mokena passes

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Three out of four referendums in New Lenox, Mokena, Wilton Township and Braidwood failed to pass Tuesday.

Park officials in New Lenox and Mokena had sought support for more capital project funding but only Mokena’s referendum passed, and that was by only 1 percent of the vote.

Wilton Township’s referendum for road improvements failed with 55 percent of voters against it. About 82 percent of voters were

against Braidwood city’s referendum to raise taxes for police pensions.

Park officials with the New Lenox Community Park District asked residents to maintain the tax rate, which had previously been raised to help pay for the Sanctuary Golf Course and was set to end in 2015. However, park officials wanted to keep the rate to pay for capital and neighborhood projects.

The referendum was up for a vote during the March elections but failed. That happened again Tuesday.

The Mokena Community Park District asked voters to issue $6 million in “property tax neutral” bonds needed to finance the Oaks Recreation and Fitness Center project, along with making improvements to Yunker Farm Park.

Park officials said the bond issue would not increase taxes for residents.

They said in the past five years the need for space and programs at Oaks Recreation

and Fitness Center has increased. They also want to explore greater use of the Yunker Farm Park site.

In Braidwood, voters were asked if they wanted to increase taxes to for a police pension fund, which would take the cost of pensions out of the city’s general fund.

City officials have said the referendum would be an increase of about $9 a month for resident’s property tax bills.

Wilton Township issued a referendum to increase the tax rate from .4618 percent to .66 percent to pay for road improvements.

Romeoville resident Kari Conforti thought the minimum wage referendum was the biggest issue alongside the governor’s race. But voting, a regular civic service for Conforti, meant much more than the choices on the ballot.

The governor’s race was one of the bigger draws on Election Day, which saw a nearly 50 percent voter turnout in Will County, according to unofficial vote totals from the Will County Clerk’s Office.

There were 388,057 registered voters in Will County for this election, according to the website of the county clerk’s office, and 192,669 votes cast.

“I think the turnout was pretty good,” Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said, noting the last midterm election had a 52 percent voter turnout. “We still have to count our provisional ballots, so that number is going to rise

Republicans regain control of Will County Board

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – Republicans have regained a onceheld majority on the Will County Board by edging out two Democrats, including longtime board member Walter Adamic, according to Tuesday’s preliminary election results.

With all 16 precincts reporting in the County Board District 5 race, Republican candidates Darren Bennefield and Gretchen Fritz were the top vote-getters, edging incumbent Democrat Reed Bible out of the seat that represents portions of Plainfield and Wheatland townships.

SHAW MEDIA Grundy County voters turned out Tuesday to cast ballots for several county offices.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, with 40 of 40 precincts reporting in Grundy County, 13,912 people had voted, or 46.23 percent of the 30,095 registered voters had cast a ballot, according to unofficial vote totals from the Grundy County Clerk’s website.

Three new circuit judges joined the seven who will retain their seats after Tuesday’s election.

Republicans Daniel Rippy and Dave Carlson and Democrat Daniel Kennedy were elected to one vacant judgeship and two newly created ones.

Rippy easily beat Democrat Sherri Hale to replace retiring Judge Robert Livas.

The Plainfield resident began his Will County law career as a prosecutor before serving as legal counsel for the state Senate judiciary committee.

He has since returned to local private practice. Hale is a Will County public defender.

Carlson, who was appointed an associate judge last year, beat Diane Diane Para in a newly created subcircuit. The former prosecutor and Plainfield resident unsuccessfully challenged James Glasgow for State’s Attorney in 2012. Para is prosecutor and legal counsel for the state’s Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Kennedy of Joliet has spent 28 years as an attorney and part-time public defender. He has argued three cases before the appellate court and worked hundreds of trials.

“I’ve handled all kinds of cases and I can do the job,” Kennedy told prospective voters at a bar association candidate forum last month.

With all precincts reporting, Democratic Sheriff Kevin Callahan had retained his seat as the Grundy County sheriff.

Callahan had 7,303 votes, leading Republican Challenger Ken Briley who had 6,428 votes.

Callahan has spent the last three decades with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, beginning as a patrol deputy in 1983. He advanced to patrol sergeant and later to a lead investigator for the department, investigating all manner of violent and nonviolent crime in Grundy County.

In 2004, he was appointed to deputy sheriff, serving under former Sheriff Terry Marketti.

In January 2013, after Marketti’s sudden death, the Grundy County Board appointed Callahan sheriff so he could fulfill the 22 months remaining in Marketti’s term.

After defense attorney Neil Patel argued the mandatory life sentence for someone accountable violated her Eighth Amendment right against cruel and unusual punishment, McKee made a statement to Judge Gerald Kinney and the courtroom audience.

“Terrance Rankins and Eric Glover are all I can bring myself to think about,” she sobbed. “My biggest wish is, if I’d known what was going to happen, I’d have made better choices.”

McKee said she was sorry and had been scared of Miner. McKee said she hoped the victims’ families could “find it in your hearts to forgive” her.

Kinney said he would have imposed a “significant” sentence if he was not legally bound to give McKee natural life, which he did “with some level of reluctance.”

“I must follow the state’s mandate ... which I feel is overreaching,” Kinney said.

“We have someone aiding and abetting who must face the same penalty [as the physical killer].”

McKee’s parents, William and Teresa McKee, testified their 3-year-old granddaughter has begun questioning why her mother hasn’t come home and can only be seen on a video screen from the county jail.

Teresa McKee said her daughter was sexually assaulted in 2009, but despite her attacker’s confession, the case was dropped when her friend, Massaro, changed her story.

Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Walsh said later McKee’s conflicting story stopped the prosecution.

The rape, and later being targeted by a sex trafficking ring that was federally prosecuted, affected McKee’s behavior, her mother said.

Bethany McKee also has been hospitalized nine times for mental issues, her mother said.

The victims’ mothers talked about the impact on them.

“What consideration was [my son] given to spare his life in this senseless murder?

The answer is evident in this case. He was given none,” Kent said.

Glover’s mother, Nicole Jones, said the void left by his absence has changed her family’s lives irrevocably.

“I don’t think there is a greater pain than having your child ripped away from you so violently and senselessly,” Jones said.

Kent and Jones met for the first time when they went to the police station to make missing person reports.

“I don’t know how a person could be so heartless and selfish,” Jones said. “This defendant will still get to write her family and even see them, but my son won’t.”

JOLIET – The life sentence Bethany McKee received Tuesday for the murders of Eric Glover Jr. and Terrance Rankins was mandated.

The victims’ families also believed the sentence was deserved.

“As if the murders themselves weren’t Bethany b a d e n o u g h , McKee the plan to get rid of the bodies and the treatment of the bodies afterward was another level of depravity,” said Rankins’ mother, Jamille Kent.

“It is sick and unspeakable. It is hard to even articulate how senseless it is that two people’s lives are taken and many others forever changed over alcohol and cigarettes,” Kent said.

On Jan. 9, 2013, McKee and Alisa Massaro lured Glover and Rankins to Massaro’s house in the Terrance 1100 block of Rankins North Hickory Street in Joliet.

Prosecutors said the women planned to rob the victims with Joshua M i n e r a n d Eric Glover A d a m L a n d - Jr. erman. Miner was found guilty of murder in a separate bench trial and also is awaiting a life sentence.

Landerman is awaiting trial.

JOLIET – Republican Steve Weber was headed Tuesday night to re-election as treasurer of Will County.

Weber held a large lead over Democrat Laurie Summers for most of Tuesday evening.

Weber had garnered nearly 59 percent of the votes, while Summers trailed with 41 percent with 295 of 303 precincts reported.

Weber was first elected to the treasurer’s office in 2010, previously serving as the county’s deputy auditor for 14 years and as auditor for eight

years.

Weber told The Herald-News he hopes to continue the work he started four years ago when he reduced operating expenses in the office and credit card fees for Will County taxpayers.

“If it does happen, I’m honored to do a Steve second term,” Weber Weber said, showing some caution before all the votes were counted.

Rachel M. Reigh, nee McGowan, age 88, of Minooka, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born in Joliet, she attended St. Patrick Grade School and was a graduate of St. Francis Academy in Joliet. She married Robert J. Reigh, D.V.M. in 1949, and was the devoted mother of ten children, 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

BOSTON – Tom Magliozzi, a Boston-area mechanic and MIT graduate who became an unlikely radio star as part of the brother duo that hosted “Car Talk,” one of public radio’s most popular show’s ever, died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 77 years old.

On “Car Talk,” Tom and his younger brother, Ray, dispensed sound advice about repairing cars mixed generously with sharp one-liners, self-deprecating humor and off-topic digressions on philosophy and other mysteries of life.

“I like to drive with the windows open. I mean, before you know it, you’re going to spend plenty of time sealed up in a box anyway, right?” Tom once quipped on-air.

“Car Talk” reached more than 4 million people a week on more than 600 radio stations across the country at its peak. It continued to be a top-rated show even after the brothers stopped taping live shows in 2012 and the network began airing reruns and archived materials.

Tom Magliozzi died on Monday.

“He and his brother changed public broadcasting forever,” Doug Berman, Car Talk’s executive producer said in a statement. “Before Car Talk, NPR was formal, polite, cautious ... even stiff.”

“We can be happy he lived the life he wanted to live; goofing off a lot, talking to you guys every week, and primarily, laughing his ass off,” Ray Magliozzi wrote Monday on the “Car Talk” website.

He also affectionately teased his late brother, who was 12 years his senior: “Turns out he wasn’t kidding. ...He really couldn’t remember last week’s puzzler.”

The Cambridge, Massachusetts, brothers were an unlikely radio duo. Graduates

of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, they opened a car repair shop in Cambridge in the early 1970s.

As the story goes, Tom was invited to a radio round-table discussion with other local auto mechanics on WBUR, Boston’s NPR affiliate, but was the only one to actually show up. He impressed the station’s producers, however, and was invited back the following week. Tom brought along Ray, and “Car Talk” was born.

The weekly Boston-produced program began airing in 1977 and became national-

ly-broadcast starting in 1987.

Magliozzi was born June 28, 1937, in a largely Italian-American section of East Cambridge. According to NPR, he was the first in his family to attend college, earning a chemical engineering degree. Besides running a car repair business, Magliozzi worked at times as a consultant and college professor.

Magliozzi is survived by his first and second wives, three children, five grandchildren, and his close companion of recent years, Sylvia Soderberg, NPR said in a statement.

HAVANA – An Associated Press photographer in Cuba, Franklin Reyes Marrero, has died in a car accident while returning from an assignment west of Havana.

Reyes, 39, was driving from the port of Mariel on Monday after working on a story about the Cuban economy. He apparently hit a patch of gravel and lost control of

his car, which crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle, police and medical officials said. They said he died at the scene.

The two occupants of the other car died later. Police did not release their identities.

Reyes is the fourth AP journalist killed on assignment this year. In April, photographer Anja Niedring-

haus was shot and killed by a police commander in Afghanistan. And in August, video journalist Simone Camilli and translator Ali Shehda Abu Afash were killed by an explosion of leftover ordnance in the Gaza Strip.

“Franklin Reyes was a vibrant and enthusiastic member of our team in Cuba, and proud to be working for AP,” said the news cooperative’s president and chief executive

officer, Gary Pruitt.

“He was an integral part of AP’s team in Cuba. His passion and professionalism were exemplary and his energy, talent and good company will be deeply missed,” said AP Director of Photography Santiago Lyon.

Among other assignments, Reyes helped cover Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Cuba and the damage wrought by Hurricane Sandy.

Coal regulator back on job; state appeals

SPRINGFIELD – A top administrator with the Illinois state agency that regulates coal mining and other energy interests is back on the job after appealing his firing months ago.

Lee Enterprises’ Springfield bureau reported the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is appealing the Illinois Civil Service Commission’s decision favoring Tony Mayville of Du Bois.

A Sangamon County judge ruled Oct. 20 that Mayville can return to work while the state challenges his reinstatement.

Mayville said publicly the reasons for his departure were twofold: He ran unsuccessfully for an Illinois House seat without first getting clearance from the DNR’s chief and mishandled campaign donations from a coal company.

Fifty-nine-year-old Mayville is seeking back pay for the time he was out of work, as well as reinstatement of his health insurance.

Work delayed on high-speed rail near Normal

NORMAL – State transportation officials say work on the infrastructure for high-speed rail in central Illinois has been delayed until spring.

The timetable has been pushed back because of inclement weather, according to Paris Ervin, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The work originally was expected to begin this fall in Normal.

Instead, crews will upgrade siding tracks, improve rail crossings and install four-quad and pedestrian gates next year.

University of Illinois index shows economic growth

CHAMPAIGN – A University of Illinois economist says a monthly index of Illinois’ economic growth continues to show slow but steady improvement.

Economist Fred Giertz said Monday the U of I Flash Index

reading for October was up slightly to 106.6. Any reading above 100 indicates economic expansion across the state.

Giertz said in a news release the slow recovery has been advancing in Illinois for more than two years. He also noted the improvement has started to show up in the state’s unemployment rate.

State officials said last month that unemployment was down to 6.6 percent in September and had dropped for seven consecutive months.

The index measures economic growth or contraction in Illinois based on corporate, income and sales tax receipts.

Alternative fuel center planned for O’Hare Airport

CHICAGO – The Chicago Department of Aviation says an alternative fuel station is planned for shuttle buses, taxis and drivers at O’Hare International Airport.

The department said Monday the fueling station complex is scheduled to open in early 2016.

It will offer fast-charging electric stations, alternative fuels and conventional gasoline to professional drivers and the public.

The 4,000-square-foot complex also will include a convenience store, restaurant and car wash.

Repairs begin on Chicago lakefront after storm

CHICAGO – The Chicago Park District says cleanup has started on the city’s North Side lakefront path following storms that ripped up large chunks of asphalt.

Officials said Monday repairs won’t be completed until the beginning of next week at the earliest. High winds created large waves on Lake Michigan on Friday that tore up the jogging and biking path. Park District officials say repairs will likely cost more than $100,000, and possibly closer to $200,000.

Oil prices tumble on Saudi discount measure for U.S.

By PAN PYLAS The Associated Press LONDON – Oil prices slumped to multi-year lows Tuesday after Saudi Arabia cut the price of oil sold to the U.S., a move that is shaking an already volatile market but likely will give the world economy an unexpected stimulus.

The 25 percent or so slide in oil prices since the summer could boost consumer spending and business investment in many economies around the world as fuel bills fall.

But not everyone’s a winner. Oil producing countries such as Russia and Venezuela, which have high extraction costs and whose budgets rely on assumptions of relatively high energy prices, stand to lose.

And lower prices eventually could slow down booming

production in the U.S., offsetting the benefit of lower energy costs for consumers and businesses.

U.S. oil dropped another 2 percent Tuesday to $77.19, at one point falling to $75.84, the lowest level since October 2011. It was trading at $100 a barrel as recently as July. Brent, the international benchmark, declined 2.3 percent, to $82.82, having earlier fallen to $82.08, its lowest level in just over four years.

Adam Slater, senior economist at Oxford Economics, reckons the recent fall in oil prices, if sustained, could add around 0.4 percent to GDP in the U.S. in two years, and a little less in Europe. China, which is the second-largest oil consumer and on track to become the largest net importer of oil, could see GDP 0.8 percent higher than it otherwise would have been.

Kurds helping Islamic militants in Kobani fight

By BASSEM MROUE and QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA The Associated Press BEIRUT – Ethnic Kurds are helping members of the Islamic State group in the battle for the key Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani, sharing their knowledge of the local terrain and language with the extremists, according to Iraqi and Kurdish officials.

It is not clear how many Kurds are aiding the estimated 3,000 Islamic State militants in the Kobani area – and fighting against their own Kurdish brethren – but activists say they are playing a major role in the 7-week-old conflict near the Turkish border.

A top military commander for the extremists in the town is an Iraqi Kurd, known by the nom de guerre of Abu Khattab al-Kurdi, helping them in the battle against fellow Kurds.

Officials with the main Syrian Kurdish force known as

the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, said they became aware of the Kurds among the mostly Sunni Muslim extremists early in the fighting.

As Kurdish fighters were defending the nearby Syrian town of Shiran in September, two Kurdish men with different accents and wearing YPG uniforms infiltrated their ranks, Kurdish officials said.

But upon questioning, they were captured and admitted to fighting for the Islamic State group, the officials added.

Iraqi and Kurdish officials said many of the Kurdish fighters with the Islamic State group are from the northeastern Iraqi town of Halabja, which was bombed with chemical weapons by Saddam Hussein’s forces in 1988, killing some 5,000 people.

Thousands of militants from all over the world have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join the ranks of the Islamic State group.

“This is similar to a surprise stimulus,” said Slater.

Although a drop in demand is a factor in the current slump amid concerns over global growth, Slater says supply-side factors are having a much bigger impact than back in 2008, when demand plummeted as the global economy tanked. The rise of fracking in the U.S., the return of oil output from Iraq and Libya, and Saudi Arabia’s willingness to resist production cuts have combined to weigh on prices.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s largest oil producer, cut prices for customers in the U.S. The move has been interpreted as an attempt by the country to maintain its market share in the world’s largest economy against supplies from the likes of Canada, Mexico and Venezuela and U.S. shale oil producers.

Evidence of what the World Health Organization calls an “emergency within the emergency” is everywhere in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the West African countries worst hit by the Ebola epidemic.

It can be seen in a decline in the number of kids being vaccinated for preventable diseases. It can be seen in the mother who crosses Monrovia, Liberia’s capital, searching for an open clinic that will treat her 3-year-old daughter who has a fever and is vomiting, both signs of Ebola but

also of many other diseases. It can be seen at the hospital in Kissidougou, Guinea, which sees not even a tenth of the patients it used to.

It also can be seen at the hospital outside Sierra Leone’s capital run by the medical charity Emergency. It is inundated with patients because nearby hospitals are closed or only partially operating.

“There’s this incredible silent killer health crisis behind the Ebola crisis,” said Eric Talbert, the executive director of Emergency’s U.S. branch.

None of roughly a dozen experts interviewed by The Associated Press could say how many people might be sick or dying for lack of health care.

The Republican Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, dispatched Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes in Kentucky after a $78 million campaign of unrelieved negativity. Spend other folks’ money with care SPRINGFIELD – I’ve never quite understood the mindset of people who live it up on someone else’s dime.

Whenever I’ve been on a business trip, I try to be frugal.

I don’t spend more than if I was paying for it myself.

It’s just the way I was raised.

Years ago, when I was a young reporter, editors used to snicker at my expense reports.

I’d stay at Travelodges and eat at McDonald’s.

When I became an editor, employees used to roll their eyes when I’d book rooms at a Red Roof Inn or Motel 6. What’s the old saying? All hotel rooms look the same with the lights off.

It’s about stewardship. When you’re spending someone else’s money, you have an extra responsibility to spend wisely.

I wish all of those who work for government had that mindset. Some do. Many don’t.

Last month, city officials from across Illinois traveled to Chicago to attend the Illinois Municipal League Conference.

I filed Freedom of Information Act requests with about 20 municipalities throughout the state to see the expense reports city officials submitted for taxpayers to pay.

The Municipal League chose to have its three-day conference at a Hilton Hotel in downtown Chicago. A room there costs more than $200 a night. Ouch.

In fairness to the city officials, they didn’t choose where the conference was to be held.

But they did choose to go.

And some chose to spend unwisely. Some city officials bought booze on the taxpayer dime. Others chowed down on prime rib.

But I looked for something a bit more wasteful: valet parking. Some folks like to pay someone else to park their car.

And that’s just fine – as long as

For example, Rock Island Alderman Katelyn Hotle spent $98 on valet parking for the three-day conference. On the other hand, Rock Island Mayor Dennis E. Pauley parked his own car and walked.

Good job, Dennis.

Over in Moline, the head honcho wasn’t so frugal. Moline City Administrator Lewis Steinbrecher splurged – with taxpayer money – and opted for valet parking. But Moline City Attorney Maureen Riggs chose to park herself.

Steinbrecher said he used valet parking because he doesn’t know his way around Chicago well. Hotle did not respond to a request for comment.

Other communities simply chose not to send anyone to the conference. East Moline was one of those communities.

Another was Kankakee.

“Due to budgetary cutbacks, any city elected officials or municipal employees wanting to attend the 2014 Illinois Municipal League Conference were to pay their own expenses. There would be no reimbursements for attending said conference,” said Kris Schmitz, a spokeswoman for the city of Kankakee. Good for Kankakee.

At a time when many city governments are raising taxes and cutting services, it’s good to see some municipal officials embracing austerity – for themselves.

Mistake to quarantine for Ebola The consensus within the medical profession is that it is a mistake to quarantine medical professionals who return to the United States from West Africa after battling Ebola.

These quarantines are “unfair and unwise, and will impede essential efforts to stop these awful outbreaks of Ebola disease at their source,” the New England Journal of Medicine said in an editorial Monday.

Unfair and unwise, yes.

But are these quarantines legal?

The federal government has the constitutional power to enforce quarantines to prevent the spread of communicable disease from other countries or across state lines. But legal experts say the power to restrict an individual’s liberty of movement within states is limited to state and

local officials.

Is the evidence a quarantine is truly justified or just the product of irrational hysteria?

It is a fundamental principle of American justice that the government cannot deny freedom to a criminal suspect without due process of law. Likewise, the government should not be able to blithely deny any person the liberty to freely go about their business without a legitimate reason.

The risk of spreading the Ebola virus is a good reason, but only legitimate risk. Kaci Hickox, the nurse who objected to her quarantine in Maine, clearly did not meet that standard. She showed no symptoms of the virus when she was quarantined.

Thus, the only reason she was denied the right of

movement is she worked with Ebola patients in Africa. A judge lifted the quarantine Friday, but that could change.

Guilt by association is not good enough. If it were, then that would apply to every one of the nurses, doctors and other health care professionals who treat Ebola patients in specialized hospitals in Nebraska, Montana, Georgia and Maryland. In which case, there would be no one to care for Ebola patients unless those health care professionals are quarantined inside those hospitals.

This is one case where law and common sense should be on the same page.

If a quarantine is not justified by medical science, it should not be justified by the law.

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com LANSING – After watching Plainfield North’s girls volleyball team play in the Class 4A T.F. South Sectional semifinal match against Lincoln-Way East on Tuesday, anyone would ask how the Tigers were ranked ninth going into the sectional.

North (30-8) lost the first game, 25-19, but won the next two in a dominating fashion, 25-13 and 25-18, to make school history by becoming the first volleyball team to win a sectional match. The Tigers will now face crosstown rival Plainfield Central in the sectional final at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Allie Lindroth led the way with 11 kills, but the Tigers had impressive hitting numbers across the board. Right-side hitter Kaitlyn Fisher tallied nine kills, middle hitters Lucia Vargas and Lauren Robeck had seven and six kills, respectively, and outside hitter Bailey Miller added five.

Once North’s offense started rolling, East (24-14) could not contain them.

Maddie Zyburt helped limit the Griffins’ points with 20 solid serve-receive passes and 15 digs. Setter Lauren Murphy, who took over for The Herald-News’ 2013 player of the year Kate Federico, had a strong performance with 39 assists, two blocks and a kill.

“At the beginning of the season, I knew that I had big shoes to fill,” Murphy said. “I knew that it would be a challenge, but I worked my hardest all the time. Everything came together for the team at the middle of the season.”

Also toward the middle of the season, North faced a challenge it would see again in this year’s regionals. They were given a low rank and had to battle against the top seed.

Playing in that situation before helped the Tigers stay calm while playing No. 1-seeded Lincoln-Way North.

“We’ve been the comeback kids since the Mizuno Cup,” Fisher said. “We were ranked ninth in that tournament, and we played in the championship match against the No. 1 seed Benet. We were in that position

They knew that they had to play their game to beat East, and they did in the last two games of the match. The first game was where the Griffins

shined, however.

Most of the Griffins’ points came from that game. Setter right-side hitter Kailey Hackett had seven kills and 10 assists, outside hitter Mel Weller had seven kills, and setter Leah Seielstad had 14 assists. Emma Bruder had 14 digs, and Maddie

Nirchi added 11 digs.

After North got rid of the nerves, it owned the court and earned its own points and forced East to make errors.

“The first game is always the jitter game,” Murphy said.

“Once we get the jitters out, we start playing our game, and we start playing at our tempo. We need to work on doing that in the first game and not be on the verge of losing, which makes us fight even harder in the second.”

After winning the first game, 25-19, the Griffins opened up the match by earning the first four points. The momentum was in their favor, and some teams might have given up, but not the Tigers.

“I think that it was confidence,” Lindroth said. “We struggled a lot in the first set.

Once we got back as a collective group, we said it was not going to be like it that set. It’s about fighting from the first point to the last point and about being aggressive throughout the entire game.”

Lindroth played confidently throughout the entire match and earned huge kills from the front and back row. In critical points of the game, Fisher came up with huge swings that kept her team in the lead.

“All I was thinking was that this could not be my last game,” Fisher said. “We’ve been going to this game for three years and losing it. I want to leave a legacy with the other seniors.

Everyone wanted this as much as I did.”

This year’s team is already leaving a mark by breaking the school record, but they want to continue their season.

“We have to keep our heads high and going into the next match, respecting our opponent,” Lindroth said. “We can’t go into the next match thinking that we’ve already won. It’s a good feeling knowing that all of the hard work we’ve put in this season has been worth it.

It’ll come down to who wants it more on Thursday. You can have all of the talent and skill, but it’s about the will to win.”

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com FAIRBURY – Two years ago, then-sophomore Keegan Fornoff was called on to serve in a key situation during Joliet Catholic’s sectional championship match against Wheaton St. Francis, and she committed an error.

The Angels wound up losing a gut-wrencher. Fornoff has lived with that memory since. On Tuesday night, she made amends.

Fornoff came off the bench and served four straight points to complete a 5-0 run as the Angels erased a 20-18 deficit to beat Champaign Central, 25-22, in the second and final match of the Class 3A Prairie Central Sectional.

JCA (22-16), which won the first game, 25-20, advances to Thursday’s sectional final against Bloomington Central, which needed three games to oust Manteno.

“I’ve been waiting two years for this,” Fornoff said.

“Two years ago, I went in for Morgan Reardon. I think it

was the same score, and I blew it. I’m happy now.”

“I went to Keegan and told her that I was confident she could do it,” Angels coach Christine Scheibe said. “She has done a little of everything for us. I can use her as a setter, a hitter or a server. She is versatile enough that she can play various roles.”

This marks the ninth visit to a sectional final in 10 years for JCA, which was ousted in the sectional semifinal last year. The Angels have three state titles and six state trophies under Scheibe.

After Champaign Central crawled back within 23-22 in the second game, 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter Madline Grimm put the match away with consecutive kills, giving her eight for the night.

“I needed a comeback game after not playing well against Providence [in the Providence Regional final],” Grimm said.

“I got really good sets at the end; I wanted to crush one so bad, but the coaches told me at the last timeout just to swing smart.”

Grimm also had three blocks against the taller Maroons. Mary Murphy chipped in six kills and eight assists.

Nicole Witmer and Maddie Naal both had two blocks; and Witmer had a couple late kills, one on a little bump shot, that were huge.

Meghan Harrison contributed seven digs and Mallory Krzysciak six, while Megan Melone had 10 assists as the Angels played the team game

that is needed to advance at this juncture.

“We weren’t in a sectional final last year, and we have a lot of girls on this team who were on that team,” Scheibe said. “We talked about how we want to get further than last year. Our goal was to not settle for getting here to the sectional.”

JCA started strong in the first game but fell behind, 8-5, as Champaign Central went

on a 6-0 run.

The Angels rallied to lead, 13-10, behind Murphy and never trailed again.

When the Maroons threatened to get back in, Grimm stepped to the forefront, knocking down kills with abandon to help put it away JCA led much of Game 2 and was on top, 17-12, when Champaign Central came roaring back. The Maroons went on an 8-1 run to lead, 2018. But Witmer’s kill reversed the momentum, and that’s when Fornoff subbed in and delivered big time.

“We’ve had some good comebacks,” Murphy said.

“We try to never pay attention to the score – to keep the same mentality – and that’s what we did tonight.

“We never give up – that’s the key.”

Scheibe said the Angels “were able to get the Maroons out of their system late in the second game. We played pretty well defensively at the end.

“We served aggressively, too. We had eight aces in all, which really helped.”

Minooka drops heartbreaker to Normal Community

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NORMAL – After pulling off one unlikely comeback, it looked as if Minooka’s girls volleyball team was on the verge of staging an even more impressive rally.

Meeting defending sectional champion Normal Community in Tuesday’s Class 4A Normal Community Sectional semifinals, the Indians overcame a 23-18 deficit in the second set to force a decisive third game.

Minooka again trailed, 2117, in the finale but stormed back to set up match-points on two occasions before the Iron finally scored the final two points to hold on for a 25-19, 23-25, 29-27 victory that advances them to Thursday’s finals against Springfield.

“I told coach [Emily)] Soto

that in Game Two we were done, but Jess Karalow stepped up and served it out and that was a miraculous comeback,” Indians coach Chris Hoelscher said. “And then when we used our last timeout, I asked them if this is the way that they wanted to go out and they said, ‘no,’ and they picked up the pace and the intensity and just battled for every point. And you can’t ask any more of your kids than that.

“It’s disappointing, yes, but they have nothing to hang their heads about. Normal is very good, and I’m proud of our effort and how we did. The first question that we asked afterward was, ‘Did you leave everything on the floor?’ Sweat, blood and skin, they left it out there. There were 32 teams left in the state coming into today, and we were one of them, so we have nothing to hang our heads

about.”

In the final set, Normal (334) looked to be in control after it took a 21-17 lead and still was up, 22-19, when Minooka (24-10) staged its second comeback of the evening.

Following a kill by Ginger Perinar (18 kills, four blocks, seven digs), Theresa Diamond (13 digs) stepped up to the line and served up four points to give the Indians a 24-22 lead.

Cynthia Ley (four kills, three blocks) had a block, and Perinar contributed a kill during that stretch.

But the Iron battled back after a lift call and two aces from Rachel Maguire to grab a 25-24 advantage. Perinar tied things with a kill, and a ball into the net put Minooka up, 26-25, but Machayla Leonard responded with a kill and a block to put the hosts in front.

In the middle set, the Iron grabbed a 23-18 lead following a block by Brianna Wooten; but after a wide hit, Jessica Karalow (five kills, five aces, 10 digs) took over serving duties and went on a roll that resulted in a surprising win for her squad.

After opening with a pair of aces, a hit into the net and another ace tied things at 23-23.

A block from Emily Hise (five kills) and Allison Papesh (eight kills) put the Indians in front, and then Hise closed things out with a kill.

“This is my senior year, so I’m really thankful to end my last game of the season for all four of my years that I’ve been on the varsity to be able to go out like this,” Karalow said.

“We saw this team play last week at the Lyons tournament, and they were the winners, so it was good for us to come in here and give them a run for their money. We knew that we were the underdog, so we wanted to give everything that we had and leave it all on the floor.”

Minooka, which received 34 assists from Kelly Clucas, closed to within 21-19 in the initial set before the Iron closed things out by scoring the last four points.

“I’m so proud of everyone,” Indians senior Jordan Airola said. “We left everything on the court, and we really came together for this last game. I don’t think that we’d want to go out any other way as close as this match was and with us coming back to win the second set. It was a whole lot of fun being on this team since we all came together and we clicked.”

Erin Eulitz made a big kill to put her team in front for good.

She added another big kill to give Central a 20-9 lead, and the Rebels never seriously threatened after that.

Eulitz, a junior, received high praise from her coach.

“She played big again,” Vogt said. “She is our best passer on our team and you can’t serve to her.”

Despite the Wildcats’ youth, Vogt likes the way his players handles themselves in tough situations.

“We look very young on paper as a team, but the maturity is there and continues to grow each time out,” Vogt said.

LANSING – Plainfield Central’s girls volleyball team guaranteed an all-Plainfield sectional championship after rallying to claim a 21-25, 2516, 25-15 win over TF South in Tuesday’s Class 4A TF South Sectional semifinals.

The Wildcats (27-11) will meet Plainfield North in Thursday’s 6 p.m. sectional finals.

Playing in front of a vocal crowd, the Wildcats jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the opener, which forced the hosts to call a timeout. When play resumed, the Rebels outscored Central, 13-2, to take the first match.

Things didn’t look good for the Wildcats after South took an 8-3 lead in the second match, but then sophomore Ashley Shook contributed a big block to start a 22-8 burst to even things up.

“We really worked on our blocking this week,” Shook said. “We knew that it had to come together. After that first game, we had to get everything back and we had to work hard to achieve that, and we did.”

Following the first game loss, Central altered its game plan.

“We changed the rotation in the second game,” Wildcats coach Erik Vogt said. “We had to get our best players blocking against their best hitters.”

Elizabeth Hyland, Central’s only senior starter, had five kills following Shook’s big block to pace the Wildcats during the middle game.

The huge Providence victory on Chicago’s South Side catapulted the Celtics to the Chicago Catholic League Blue championship. Because of the Illinois High School Association’s insistence on geographical representation in the state football playoffs, the two Catholic Blue powers again will meet Friday night. The Class 7A second-round showdown again will be played at St. Rita.

A crowd of 8,000 is expected for the all-Augustinian school sequel.

Providence (9-1) is led by its all-everything senior quarterback Justin Hunniford. He has completed 184 of 258 passes, 71.3 percent, for 2,571 yards and 37 touchdowns. He has been intercepted only once.

Two Division I receivers have led the Celtic air attack.

University of Notre Damebound Miles Boykin has grabbed 50 passes for 769 yards and 17 touchdowns. Boykin has sat out the last two games because of an elbow injury but will play Friday. University of Iowa-bound tight end Nate Vejvoda has hauled in 34 passes for 536 yards and seven scores.

St. Rita is led by Lee, who has 14 rushing touchdowns and has hauled in two receiving touchdowns from senior quarterback CJ Weydeman.

Weydeman has thrown for 971 yards and nine touchdowns.

Senior Brandon Gaston has hauled in 35 of Weydeman’s tosses for 715 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Mustangs’ defense is led by senior linebacker Matt Mitchell and senior defensive back Marty Bechina. Mitchell intercepted a Cole Kotopka pass and was a force in St. Rita’s 35-21 victory over Plainfield East last week in the opening round of the playoffs.

It’s time to give some midterm grades to the Bears’ coaching staff and front office.

As we all know, it’s already been a tough few days for coach Marc Trestman, but there’s actually a story here I haven’t seen or heard anyone report yet.

Trestman is a member of the head coach’s class of 2013; and when you stack him up against his classmates, the results are disappointing at best.

Much has been made recently of the Bears choosing Trestman over Bruce Arians, but that really just scratches the surface of the decision authored by general manager Phil Emery.

Of the six new head coaches last season, only Trestman inherited a winning club in the 10-6 Bears.

After a 2-14 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars tabbed Gus Bradley as their guy, and the Kansas City Chiefs went after Andy Reid after a 2-14 campaign of their own.

The Philadelphia Eagles were 4-12 in 2012, prompting them to wave goodbye to Reid and bring in Chip Kelly.

Arizona had a 5-11 season in 2012, and although they were the last to fill their head coaching job, they still were able to hire the reigning NFL Coach of the Year in Arians.

Buffalo’s answer to a 6-10 season was Doug Marrone, and the Chargers followed a 7-9 season by adding Mike McCoy. In spite of being given the best team at the time, other than Bradley, Trestman has produced the worst results.

While the Bears went backward from 10-6 to 8-8, Kelly, Reid and McCoy led their teams to the playoffs in their first season, and Arians had the rare 10-6 team to not make the playoffs.

Going into Week 9 of this season, Arian’s team is in first place in the NFC West at 7-1; Kelly’s Eagles lead the NFC East at 6-2; Marrone’s Bills and Reid’s Chiefs are 5-3 and in the wild-card hunt; and McCoy’s Chargers are 5-4 after a 5-1 start. Only Bradley’s Jaguars continue to struggle at 1-8.

There is nothing subjective about that report. Those are the facts.

Most frustrating about that news is it’s hard to argue any of those clubs – with the possible exception of Philadelphia – is as talented as the Bears, and none has as expensive or frustrating a quarterback.

All of that said, it wouldn’t be fair to give Trestman a failing grade. He hasn’t failed – he’s just struggled mightily. His defense has been beset with injuries since he got here, and this season the offense has been battered as well.

In spite of that, his offense has been much improved

GOLD GLOVE AWARDS 2014

NEW YORK – All those snazzy plays by Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez earned them more than tips of the hat from their Kansas City teammates.

The Royals trio wound up snagging Gold Gloves, too. “It was something that was pretty special to watch,” Gordon said.

Three Baltimore players also were honored by Rawlings on Tuesday for fielding excellence, as was St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina for the seventh year in a row.

The Royals paid tribute to each other throughout a run to the World Series, tipping their caps after fine plays. Kansas City lost in seven games to San Francisco – none of the Giants won Glove Gloves.

“The whole entire team, what we did defensively all year, that’s part of our game,”

Hosmer said.

Gordon, who began his career as a third baseman before becoming a regular left fielder, won for the fourth straight year. Perez at catcher and Hosmer at first base have two wins apiece.

“We’ve said from day one, if you can’t play defense, there’s probably not a spot for you in our everyday lineup,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said.

Perez said he thought Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain, third baseman Mike Moustakas and shortstop Alcides Escobar could win Gold Gloves in the near future.

Managers and coaches voted for the awards in their own leagues. The Society for American Baseball Research’s Defensive Index factored about 25 percent into the results.

Finally, any coach at the minimum deserves combat pay for having to deal with Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler; and the leadership void left in his locker room when Brian Urlacher was given the boot shortly after his arrival has been a problem. What Trestman has not done at any point is wilt or waiver under fire; and while he has failed to inspire his team’s efforts, he has shown consistency, calm and grace in the face of a rapidly deteriorating situation.

For where his team is at right now, a D+ seems appropriate.

FOOD ‘5-star restaurant with 3-star prices’ Co-owner/chef of upscale Bolingbrook restaurant to cook for March of Dimes fundraiser

Shaw Media Correspondent BOLINGBROOK – Juan Luiz Gonzalez has always loved to cook. He spent his childhood in Mexico City, Mexico, where he watched his mother and grandmother fill the pots in the kitchen with food and love.

“My passion has always been cooking, since I was 5 years old,” Gonzalez said.

On Nov. 13, Gonzalez – co-owner and chef for Mago Grill & Cantina in Bolingbrook – will use that passion to benefit March of Dimes, which it intended to “help moms have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies,” according to its website, marchofdimes.org.

Gonzalez is part of a team of chefs who each will feature one of their specialties at Suburban Signature Chefs Auction 2014. The fundraising goal, according to a news release, is $128,500. Gonzalez is happy to be part of this event, now in its sixth year.

“I personally always want to give back to the community,” Gonzalez said of the event.

Gonzalez will prepare a Cuban-inspired dish for the event. He said the recipe begins with Ropa Vieja, a beef brisket with bell peppers, tomatoes and spices, served on top of cilantro rice with sweet plantains.

Rather than a competition, Gonzalez finds the fundraiser an opportunity to expose people to the Mago Grill & Cantina’s approach to food: no cans, all items cooked fresh and, most of the time, purchased locally.

“We try to offer a five-star restaurant with three-star prices,” Gonzalez said.

Mago Grill is also known for its ceviche, which Gonzalez said is a raw seafood that is “cooked” in vinegar or lime. The restaurant has three varieties and an opportunity to try a sample size of all three in one order. This is Gonzalez’s “Grandma Paula’s” recipe. It is not on the menu, but Gonzalez does offer it as a special throughout the year.

Ceviche Yucateco Ingredients: 4 pounds rock shrimp

6 limes, juiced 3 oranges, juiced 1 medium red onion, chopped 4 cups seedless tomatoes, diced 2 cups mangoes, diced ½ bunch cilantro, chopped 1 roasted Habanero pepper, seeded and chopped 1 cup mango puree ½ cup passion fruit juice 2 whole avocados, diced Salt and pepper to taste Combine the lime and orange juice and add 3 tablespoons of salt to mixture. Cut rock shrimp in half and

add to juice mixture. Leave to marinate in refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours.

In a different mixing bowl, combine the red onion, diced tomatoes, mangoes, cilantro, Habanero pepper and diced avocados. Add the mango puree and the passion fruit juice to the mixture. Drain the shrimp from the juice marinade thoroughly. Add shrimp to the rest of the ingredient mixture. Add salt and pepper to taste. Let set for 30 minutes before serving. Enjoy cold. Serve with Mole sauces, for which Mago tortillas chips or saltine crackers.

Along the way to owning Mago Grill & Cantina, Gonzalez worked in a couple restaurants, including as head chef at Fuego Mexican Grill & Margarita Bar in Arlington Heights, when he and the restaurant were featured on WTTW’s “Check Please.”

The dishes Gonzalez features at Mago Grill are those one might expect in a Mexican restaurant – such as tacos and

fajitas, along with a variety of regional Latin American cuisine. In addition, Gonzalez also has an entire page dedicated to his grandmother’s dishes.

Titled Las Recetas de Doña Paula (Grandma Paula’s Recipes), the section includes such dishes as “Filete Churrasco – a charbroiled flat iron steak, roasted chile de árbol chimichurri butter, poblano mashed potatoes, malbec reduction.”

It also includes “Pozole de Borrego – braised lamb shank,

hominy chile guajillo broth, julienned green cabbage, radishes, onions.” Interestingly, both selections are gluten-free. But Gonzalez is vigilant about special dietary needs.

“We have a menu that is 90 percent gluten-free,” Gonzalez said. “We have a specific fryers for the chips so it doesn’t contaminate with the flour.”

Gonzalez definitely keeps tree nut and peanut allergies in mind, as some of his sauces do contain them as ingredients. These include

Gonzalez said his staff is trained to communicate that information to everyone who dines there.

“We alert the people before the salsa comes,” Gonzalez said. “We know how hard it is to have an allergy; we take this very seriously.”

Today, there are three locations of Mago Grill & Cantina – 641 E. Boughton Road in Bolingbrook, 115 W. Campbell St. in Arlington Heights, and 100 W. Higgins Road in South Barrington.

That is timely because this is Guy Fawkes Night in England. Fireworks are set off and bonfires burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, whose gang tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.

There were fireworks when today’s deal was played. What do you think of the auction, what should West lead against three clubs, and what is the outcome?

East’s passed-hand takeout double was aggressive but acceptable.

South was right to rebid one spade.

Then West might have passed, but one no-trump was reasonable. That should have been passed out (and defeated), but South could not resist one more bid. West’s two-spade call was imaginative, given South’s onespade rebid. That contract would have required excellent guesswork by West; however, one can understand North’s three-club raise.

West found the best start: a low trump. South took the trick with his king and led a low spade. West carefully put up his eight, but then strangely shifted to the diamond six, instead of continuing with the club jack (not that that defeats the contract if declarer plays hearts twice through West).

Declarer won with his diamond ace and should have led a heart or ruffed a spade, but he played a diamond to dummy’s king and ruffed a diamond low. West happily overruffed and led the club jack, on which East discarded his heart four to give West count in the suit.

So, when South won and finally tried a heart, West ducked and the contract had to fail.
