City Council OKs marijuana dispensary special-use permits

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The City Council voted Monday night to issue special-use permits to separate medical marijuana dispensary businesses targeting use of a site on Airport Road near McDonough Street.

Natural Leaf Shoppe and The MedMen of Illinois are seeking to use separate units of a multi-tenant building in the 300 block of Airport Road.

The 1.8-acre site – zoned as light industrial – is in close proximity to Joliet Area Community Hospice. Natural Leaf Shoppe plans to use about 4,400 square feet of warehouse and office space at 347 Airport Road, while The MedMen of Illinois hopes to use a 3,461 square foot section of the same building, but at 351 Airport Road.

Because state law restricts the number of licensed dispensaries to 60, it’s likely the state won’t approve both

companies’ requests to build at the same location, said City Manager Jim Hock. Both sites would be equipped with off-street parking and overhead garage doors for secured interior delivery of products.

In July, the City Council approved one permit for 3C Compassionate Care Center at 1627 Rock Creek Blvd. in the Rock Run Business Park.

Under the city’s zoning restrictions, medical marijuana dispensaries are only allowed in restricted business and general business zoning districts as special uses.

Money-troubled Rialto Theatre District 2 Councilman Bob O’Dekirk updated council members on a recent decision by the Rialto Square Theatre’s board to take money from the theater’s endowment fund to pull the venue out of a “short-term financial bind.”

or underperformed so the board voted last week to pull $200,000 from the endowment fund to pay for artists’ fees and operations, said O’Dekirk, who serves as the board’s City Council liaison.

The board viewed it as a “emergency situation” and a “drastic measure they had to take,” he said.

The money-troubled Rialto receives funding from several sources, including the city, each year. At-large Councilwoman Jan Quillman, who once served as the board’s council liaison, suggested an audit be done to ensure money is being spent properly.

“I’d like to see the financials there because we love the Rialto but ... maybe we need to see what we can do to subsequently help them or see exactly what’s going on, what cutbacks they’ve done, the staff raises, so on and so forth,” Quillman said.

Mayor Tom Giarrante agreed.

Inventor honored at Plainfield Village Board meeting Monday

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Going out in the sun would have been much more dangerous had Plainfield resident and inventor Walter Voyt not researched the effects of ultraviolet light.

According to patents he filed in the 1970s, Voyt was the first person to discover that the high-frequency light from the sun is a carcinogen.

Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, presented Voyt with a recognition award from the Illinois Senate Monday at the Plainfield Village Board meeting.

The Senate recognition follows another distinct honor earned by Voyt. He was inducted into the Illinois Senior Hall of Fame on Oct. 22 for his inventions and patents. The Senior Hall of Fame honors Illinoisans aged 65 years or older

with personal achievements that helped society.

Voyt said he discovered Vitamin E could be used as a sunblocking agent, and his research led to the creation of broad-spectrum sunscreens more effective than previous versions.

He also was instrumental in saving an Amoco plant in Joliet in the early 1980s from closing after inventing a new way to produce a chemical, according to hall of fame documents.

Voter turnout expected to mirror 2010 election

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com If the past two general elections are any indication, it’s unclear which way Will County voters will swing this year in the closely watched governor’s race.

It’s a tossup statewide, too, with the latest polls seesawing back and forth between Winnetka businessman Bruce Rauner, a Republican, and Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat.

Will County voters in the 2006 general election helped Democrat Rod Blagojevich win a second term. Blagojevich garnered 46 percent of the vote in Will County that year, while Republican opponent Judy Baar Topinka received just 41 percent.

Four years later, in 2010, Will County voters leaned Republican in the governor’s race, which featured Republican Bill Brady against incumbent Quinn. Brady lost to Quinn, but received a little more than 50 percent of the Will County vote.

Hoping to woo Will County voters, Rauner and Quinn have made several campaign stops in the area during the last several months. Their running mates, Republican Evelyn Sanguinetti and Democrat Paul Vallas, also made scheduled speaking appearances.

If campaign spending is any indication of Quinn and Rauner’s desire to grow their voter bases before Tuesday, the two candidates are on pace to spend more than $100 million when all is said and done, making it the most expensive governor’s race in state history.

But how this year plays out will ultimately be up to those who show up at the polls Tuesday.

Voter turnout Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said while she “always shoots for 100 percent voter turnout,” she expects numbers similar to the 2010 general election: 52 percent.

That’s a little more than half of the 388,057 registered voters in Will County.

“We have extended hours.

We have weekend hours. We have permanent polling places. We’ve given them every op-

portunity,” Schultz Voots said.

“If they don’t vote, shame on them.”

As of Monday, a little more than 21,400 Will County residents had participated in early or grace period voting – double the number of ballots cast in 2010 before Election Day. Absentee voting – which allows voters to cast their ballot before Election Day through mail or in person – also is on the rise. This year, a little more than 33,290 absentee ballots have been returned to the county clerk’s office so far, whereas 22,287 absentee ballots were returned in 2010.

Schultz Voots said more people may be comfortable with voting early and in the privacy of the own home. And, she said, absentee voting has never been easier in Illinois.

Unlike in past years, people no longer need to provide the county clerk’s office with a reason to vote early or by mail.

Thanks to new legislation signed into law earlier this year, voters also can register to vote on Election Day for the first time in Illinois.

But they can only register at permanent polling places or the county clerk’s office, not at temporary ones. The new law only applies to this year’s general election, but could be extended depending on how this year goes.

Under state law, people are barred from doing any electioneering or soliciting of votes within 100 feet of any polling place. n Before heading out to the polls, make sure you know where to go.

If you don’t know where to vote, there’s three options.

1) Using your address, you can search online at the Will County Clerk’s office.

2) Your polling place is determined by precinct number, which is located on your Voter Registration Card.

You are not required by state law to present your voter registration card in order to vote on Election Day. 3) Polling places are also published in the county’s Voter Information Guide. Feds: IS suspect planned to take siblings

By MICHAEL TARM The Associated Press CHICAGO – A younger brother and sister left their Bolingbrook home and were detained at O’Hare International Airport along with their 19-year-old brother last month – all of them intent on traveling to Syria to join Islamic State militants, a prosecutor alleged Monday while pushing for the older brother to remain behind bars.

The jailed Mohammed Hamzah Khan was the only one charged, but prosecutor Richard Hiller said Khan’s 16-year-old brother and 17-year-old sister also were passionate about the Islamic State. Hiller said the girl once used the Twitter handle

@DeathIsTheeNear to send a favorable tweet about a video of beheadings – even placing a smiley emoticon in the text.

Authorities announced Khan’s Oct. 4 arrest at O’Hare several days after it happened. On Monday, they revealed for the first time that his siblings were detained with him that same day, all three with airplane tickets to Istanbul, Turkey, which borders Syria.

At the end of the 2½-hour detention hearing in federal court in Chicago, U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan Cox ruled the government amply showed that Khan poses a potential threat and a flight risk and therefore shouldn’t be released.

“He was prepared to aban-

don his home, his family, his country and his citizenship to join [the Islamic State],” Cox said.

Defense attorney Thomas Durkin had called on Cox to grant Khan supervised release so he could get counseling.

“There is time to modify this behavior ... which is, I think, needed here,” he said.

“We can’t give up on these kids.”

Khan is charged with seeking to provide material support to a foreign terrorist group, which carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence. Prosecutors gave no indication they are even contemplating charges against his siblings, who they never referred to by name.

Families of missing people offer help in identifying John and Jane Does

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Hoping to help identify the unknown remains of people who have gone missing, people who have lost loved ones themselves are “adopting” John and Jane Does to raise awareness.

Sue Olsen of Maple Park lost her son Bradley P. Olsen in 2007. While she continues searching for him, she has “adopted” an unidentified person found in 1998 behind a Bolingbrook truck stop.

Anne Bielby of Rachelfind said adopting John or Jane Does is meant to bring public attention to people who are found but remain unknown.

Bielby is a coordinator with Rachelfind, a Bolingbrook organization established to find Rachel Marie Mellon Skemp, who went missing in 1996.

“The hope is if their missing loved one is in a morgue

somewhere, then someone will step up and get them identified,” she said.

As of June, 11,036 unidentified people have been reported to NamUs, or the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Of those cases, 1,388 have been resolved – 337 with direct assistance from NamUs. The John Doe found in Bolingbrook is a black adult male between the ages of 18 and 24 whose probable year of death was anywhere between 1993 and 1997, according to the NamUs database. He is one of 11 people in Will County who remain unidentified.

Bielby said while Will County law enforcement officials and the coroner’s office have added names to the NamUs database, many families don’t check it to find someone who went missing.

One advantage of NamUs is that families can submit their DNA information, so when

unidentified people show up, they can be matched, she said.

Families of missing people can help because they generate their own network of media contacts regularly, Bielby said. Since they are in the public eye, they can get people who are found but unidentified publicized, as well.

In Cook County, a Chicago Jane Doe was adopted by Sheila-Bradley Smith, great-aunt of missing children Diamond and Tionda Bradley, Bielby said. The Jane Doe is a white female found in 2005 and her age range is between 13 and 18 years old.

Besides publicity, facial reconstruction from skeletal remains by physical anthropologists helps, she said. Facial reconstructions are approximations of what a person may have looked like, not an exact portrait, she said.

“What the hope is, is that a family member might recognize a similarity,” Bielby said.

Hiller described Khan as the instigator of the plan to join the Islamic State. He said Khan’s meticulous planning included landing a job at a Chicago-area store to earn money for the three plane tickets.

“He tried to take his high school-aged siblings halfway around the world to a war zone,” Hiller said.

The prosecutor said all three spoke of acts of violence, with the sister writing about “preparing for death.”

“He and his siblings not only had barbaric rhetoric ... they tried to carry it out,” he said.

Prosecutors have previously said Khan left his parents a handwritten letter in his bedroom that expressed

anger over his U.S. taxes being used to kill his “Muslim brothers and sisters.”

His siblings left similar letters, Hiller told the court Monday. He said the girl sounded determined but also saddened she was leaving the family’s home in the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, writing, “My heart is crying for the thought I left you.”

At Monday’s hearing, Durkin called the case against his client “hopelessly weak.” He said Khan and his siblings appeared to have fallen under the influence of “slick” Islamic State propaganda.

Durkin has previously said the parents did not know of their son’s plans to travel to Syria.

Judge denies new trial for McKee

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge Monday denied motions for a new trial by a participant convicted in the Hickory Street murders.

Chuck Bretz, attorney for Bethany McKee, told Judge Gerald Kinney prosecutors had not proved his client helped plan the robbery that led to the deaths of Eric Glover and Terrence Rankins Jr. on Jan. 9, 2013.

While Joshua Miner and Adam Landerman allegedly strangled the victims, the pair discussed robbing them with McKee and Alisa Massaro, according to trial testimony.

Bretz said McKee consistently said during a police interview played during her trial she believed Miner was “joking” when he brought up robbing her friend Rankins.

“The only other evidence the state offered [to show McKee knew of the plan] was Massaro’s testimony ... in which she did not recall any specific statements McKee made in this discussion,” Bretz said.

Massaro testified against McKee as part of a plea deal under which she was sentenced illegally, Bretz said.

Massaro pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and two counts of concealing a homicide, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

But Illinois law requires the three-year sentence on each concealment conviction be served after each five-year sentence on the robbery convictions – not at the same time, Bretz said Monday.

Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Dan Walsh said the error in Massaro’s sentencing has no effect on the weight Kinney gave to her testimony in McKee’s trial.

State’s attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie said Massaro’s sentence will be adjusted in future court proceedings, but will remain the 10 years that was part of the plea agreement.

Miner, who also was found guilty of murder in a separate bench trial, is awaiting sentencing. Landerman, who allegedly strangled Glover while Miner attacked Rankins, is still awaiting trial.

McKee was living with Massaro in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street when they invited Rankins to come over. McKee told police Miner proposed robbing Rankins for cigarette money.

McKee is set to be sentenced Tuesday by Kinney.

Glover’s mother and Rankins’ mother are expected to testify during the hearing.

Because she was convicted of two murders, McKee cannot receive less than a life sentence.

Joliet man found fit to stand trial in murder of his mother

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A psychologist has found a man accused of murdering his mother and dumping her body in the Des Plaines River is fit to stand trial.

Defense attorney Michael Renzi said Monday that Dr. Randi Zoot has turned in reports from her second evaluation of Shane G. Smith, 34.

Zoot has determined Smith understands he faces criminal charges and can work with Renzi to prepare a defense.

The second evaluation was done after Smith reportedly had a “panic attack” and became ill in the courtroom when Renzi began discussing the case with him.

On Oct. 17, 2013, the body of Joan M. Smith was found in the river near Brandon Road. Another relative had reported the 59-year-old Joliet woman missing a few days earlier.

Shane Smith allegedly gave police inconsistent information after her death was discovered and was arrested on charges of murder and concealing a homicide.

Plan includes duplexes and banquet hall

IDOT starts local road projects THE HERALD–NEWS The state has launched two local road projects in recent days, including advance work on a future Weber Road interchange.

The second project is repair work on Route 52 on the south end of Joliet.

Work starts this week on embankment construction along the Interstate 55 ramps at Weber Road in Romeoville, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The embankment project precedes future ramp construction.

Eventually the state plans to create a new interchange at Weber Road. Major construction is to start next summer with the interchange to be completed in 2017.

The embankment project will be done at night from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. The left shoulder of the inbound and outbound ramps will be closed. Motorists should expect northbound lane closures on Weber Road

The new facility would use chemical agents to remove phosphorous rather than biological ones, which is more costly, he said.

LOCKPORT – City officials in Lockport will discuss a proposal Wednesday to make room for 26 duplexes, a banquet hall and a cultural center near the Broken Arrow Golf Course.

Owners of the Broken Arrow Golf Club property have always sought to turn the land that is north and west of the clubhouse into an area that would have duplexes and a banquet facility, said Michael Chen, general manager of the Broken Arrow Golf Club.

“That project has always been on the back burner,” he said.

The land used to be a golf

course that was not used to its fullest capacity for that reason, he said. Now, there are plans to have 26 duplexes – with 52 dwelling units – and a 15,000 square-foot building that would house the banquet facility and cultural center.

City council members will discuss the proposal this Wednesday during the Committee of the Whole meeting.

According to city records, the plan and zoning commission was in favor of it in a 7-0 vote.

The council will discuss a concept plan, which includes a site plan but not the landscape or preliminary engineering plan, said Pam Hirth, city community and economic development director.

Dresden unit shut down for planned maintenance THE HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Dresden Generation Station Unit 3 was taken out of service Monday morning for a planned refueling

and maintenance outage.

About 1,500 additional workers will join the 900 permanent Dresden Station employees during the work in the coming weeks, Exelon Genera-

tion said in a news release.

An Exelon spokesman said the company would not provide a project completion date because such information is considered proprietary. But

the news release said the work will be “completed during the coming weeks.”

Workers at the nuclear plant will perform more than 9,000 inspections, maintenance

activities and other work that cannot be done while the unit operates, Exelon said.

Unit 3 is one of two working nuclear units at Dresden.

Another unit is not used.

JOHN E. DOWLING John E. Dowling, age 62, entered eternal life on October 31, 2014.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia “Patsy” (nee Stapay); four loving sons, Jason (Elizabeth), Jordan (Pamela), Robert, and Joseph Dowling; one loving daughter, Ryann Dowling; cherished grandchildren, Faye and Beatrice Dowling, Adaline and Everett Dowling; loving mother, Therese Dowling (nee Gallery); dear brother, Jim; dear sisters, Chris, Sharon, Patty, and Betty; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceded in death by his father, John Dowling.

John was a passionate musician and singer/songwriter and a skilled handyman. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

A Celebration of John’s life will begin on Friday, November 7, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., with a Mass of

Melissa; eight great grandchildren, Jocelyn, Harrison, Tatum, Hayes, Hawkins, Wyatt, Gray and Cooper.

HUGH R. FLEMING JR. LLOYD H. ENEIX Born: Oct. 14, 1921; in Troy Township, IL Died: Nov. 1, 2014; in Beloit, WI Lloyd H. Eneix, 93, of Beloit, WI, died Saturday, November 1, 2014, in Riverside Terrace, Beloit, WI. He was born October 14, 1921, in Troy Township, IL, the son of John Harrison and Bertha Louise (Green) Eneix. Lloyd was a 1940 graduate of Channahon High School, Channahon, IL. He married Mary Orlomoski on October 23, 1943, in Elwood, IL. She predeceased him on July 7, 2014, after 70 years of marriage.

At the age of 18, Lloyd began his 45 year career in the River Towboat Industry. He started as a Deckhand in 1940 and worked his way up to Pilot, Captain, and eventually to Senior Vice President of Operations, retiring in 1985.

During World War II Lloyd moved coal and grain as a towboat pilot.

He also helped moved submarines and launch LST’s for the war effort.

Lloyd and Mary lived in Channahon, IL until 1968, moving to St. Louis, MO where he became operations manager for Rose Barge Lines. After retirement, Lloyd and Mary moved to Paducah, KY, where he enjoyed playing golf, and taking golf trips with his friends. In 1999 they moved to Beloit, WI to be close to family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his two sons, Randy (Nancy) Eneix of Lakewood, CO and Brad (Dianne) Eneix of Stoughton, WI; five grandchildren, Chad, Grant, Brent, Mike and

She was a dedicated elementary school teacher, serving one year at Good Shepherd Lutheran in Romeoville, four years at Woodland School, Joliet and 25 years for Troy School District #30C. Surviving are her husband of 30 years, Nick Jurjevich; one sister, Janet Cullen; three nieces, April Highbaugh, Brenda (Terry) Briscoe, and Cindy (Paul) Hanley; one nephew, David Cullen; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. R. W. Schubert and his staff for their excellent care.

Governor candidates make final appeal for votes

CHICAGO – From restaurants to airports, the candidates for Illinois governor made a frenzy of statewide campaign stops Monday in a final appeal to voters in one of the nation’s most competitive gubernatorial matchups.

Both Democrat Gov. Pat Quinn and Republican businessman Bruce Rauner greeted the Chicago breakfast crowd before launching plane tours and evening rallies ahead of Tuesday’s election, which also features a U.S. Senate race, hotly contested congressional matchups and five ballot measures.

Top Republicans and Democrats appearing alongside Rauner and Quinn urged voters to head for the polls, noting that some areas have already reported strong early voting turnout during the usually ho-hum midterm elections. Local election officials, meanwhile, were double-checking ballot-counting procedures against a recent state attorney general opinion that raised fears of delays.

Appearing at a rally at a Chicago campaign office with nearly every major Democrat on the ballot, Quinn focused on his push to raise the minimum wage, recent jobs-related announcements and the drop in unemployment during his tenure.

“It’s very, very important that we keep our momentum,” said Quinn, who’s seeking a second full term. He deemed Tuesday’s contest “a stark choice between our side that believes in investing in everyday people” and an out-of-touch multimillionaire candidate, a reference to Rauner.

But Rauner, a venture capitalist from the Chicago suburb of Winnetka, said Illinois could do better.

with former GOP Gov. Jim Edgar, a downstate native, and repeated his vow to clean up Springfield and use his business background to help fix Illinois’ fiscal woes.

Rauner’s fly-around included visits to Bloomington, Moline, Rockford, Sugar Grove and Lincolnshire. Quinn traveled most of the day with Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, and the itinerary featured stops in Rockford, Moline, Peoria, Savoy, Marion, East St. Louis and Springfield.

The highly competitive race has included intense efforts to draw voters to the polls and pursue a range of ballot “integrity” measures.

Madigan told The Associated Press Monday that local officials would have to determine their own best route to take – as long as they don’t count votes early.

“I know different jurisdictions have difference processes,” she

said after a Quinn rally in Chicago.

“They’re going to have to be working with their local states attorneys to see what they can do.”

Tuesday’s election also includes five ballot measures. Two seek to change the state’s constitution with questions on the rights of voters and crime victims. The others are nonbinding and deal with paying for birth control, raising the minimum wage and taxing the state’s millionaires.

Illinois EPA to release plan for rivers, lakes

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency plans next month to release an action plan aimed at reducing the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous in the state’s rivers and lakes.

The agency’s release of the “document of strategic actions”

to the public in November comes after months of talks among environmentalists, agriculture professionals and wastewater agencies, The Springfield State Journal-Register reported.

State officials will gather input from the public during a comment period on the plan, state EPA water bureau chief Marcia Willhite said. The agency plans to have the proposal finalized by the end of the year following the comment period, she said.

The pollutants come from agricultural fertilizers as well as sources including wastewater treatment facilities and stormwater from cities.

“Nitrogen and phosphorous can cause problems for drinking water, it can cause excess algal growth,” Willhite said. “We have the impact on our in-state rivers and streams, but Illinois also contributes a lot of nitrogen and phosphorous that makes its way down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico and causes a low oxygen zone there.”

Laura Lurkins, director of natural and environmental resources for the Illinois Farm Bureau, said there will be challenges.

“When this rolls out, we will have a hurdle to educate our membership about the issue,” she said. “Some of them frankly don’t know it is an issue. Some of them do. It’s just like anything else, with 80,000 farmers in the state, there are varying degrees of awareness on any issue.”

10 people injured in northeast Missouri accident

MOBERLY, Mo. – A driver falling asleep at the wheel is being blamed for an accident in northeast Missouri that injured 10 people from Chicago, including eight children.

The Hannibal Courier-Post reported that the accident happened at 7:32 a.m. Sunday in rural Monroe County. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 26-year-old Brittany K. Griggs was driving on Route 24 when she fell asleep, hit an embank-

ment and overturned.

Griggs and 27-year-old Maurika D. Jackson suffered moderate injuries. Two of the children suffered serious injuries. Six other children had minor injuries.

All 10 passengers were taken to a hospital in Moberly. One of the children, 5-year-old Martell Kaywood, was then flown to a St. Louis hospital.

Sears, Kmart add Thanksgiving shopping hours

HOFFMAN ESTATES – Sears and Kmart say they will open on Thanksgiving day again this year with extended hours to draw shoppers.

Sears will open at its earliest time ever – letting shoppers in at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving. The retailer decided two years ago to open on Thanksgiving.

Kmart will open its doors at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving and stay open for 42 hours straight.

Man charged in shooting near mosque

BRIDGEVIEW – An Orland Park man has been charged with shooting an acquaintance following prayer services at a mosque southwest of Chicago.

Rame Joudeh, 41, was ordered held on $1 million bond Sunday on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm. Prosecutors say Joudeh confronted the 36-year-old man Friday afternoon in Bridgeview and sprayed a “chemical irritant” in his face.

They say he opened fire with a pistol and grazed the man’s shoulder. School children were outside during recess at a nearby school. No other injuries were reported.

Prosecutors didn’t offer a possible motive. Bridgeview Police Chief Walter Klimek says there was no threat to the school children or the mosque.

Online jail records didn’t indicate an attorney.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Security contractor breach not detected for months WASHINGTON – A cyberattack similar to previous hacker intrusions from China penetrated computer networks for months at USIS, the government’s leading security clearance contractor, before the firm noticed, officials and others familiar with an FBI investigation told The Associated Press.

The breach, first revealed by the company and government agencies in August, compromised the private records of at least 25,000 employees at the Homeland Security Department and cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars in lost government contracts.

After botching Ebola, WHO to pick new Africa boss LONDON – After acknowledging it bungled the response to the biggest Ebola outbreak in history, the World Health Organization is electing a new regional director for its Africa office this week.

Critics say it’s about time.

Costly, competitive Senate campaign nears end WASHINGTON – On a final, furious day of campaigning, Republicans strained to capture control of the Senate while Democrats struggled to limit their congressional losses in elections midway through an unpopular President Barack Obama’s second term.

Democrats weighed down by Obama’s unpopularity kept their distance from him and looked to a costly turn-out-the-vote operation in the most competitive Senate races to save their seats and their majority. The cost of the campaign climbed toward $4 billion.

World Trade Center reopens – 13 years after 9/11 attacks

By VERENA DOBNIK The Associated Press NEW YORK – The silvery, 1,776-foot skyscraper that rose from the ashes of 9/11 to become a symbol of American resilience opened for business Monday, as 175 employees of the magazine publishing giant Conde Nast settled into their first day of work in their new offices.

One World Trade Center’s official opening marked a symbolic return to some sense of normalcy for the site where the towers toppled more than 13 years ago.

“The New York City skyline is whole again,” says Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns both the building and the 16-acre World Trade Center site.

Steps away from the new tower are two memorial fountains built on the footprints of the decimated twin towers, a reminder of the more than 2,700 people who died in the terrorist attack.

Conde Nast – publisher of

Vogue, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair – is expected to move in about 3,000 more employees by early next year, eventually occupying 25 floors of the $3.9 billion, 104-story tower, the nation’s tallest building.

Amid Monday’s celebratory tour of parts of 1 World Trade Center, Conde Nast officials declined to comment on workers’ possible fears about being in the new building.

Foye counters that it’s “the most secure office building in America.” And its chief architect, T.J. Gottesdiener, said the high-rise was built with steel-reinforced concrete that makes it as terror attack-proof as possible – much stronger than the original towers that collapsed on themselves after the hijacked planes hit.

The stairwells are built with a hardened concrete core, and wider to allow firefighters to move while people exit. The building’s mechanical systems also are encased in hardened concrete.

“If my son told me he had a job in the trade center Tow-

er 1, I would have no qualms about him being there,” Gottesdiener said.

After 9/11, he said, architects took pains to figure out new ways to make a high-rise safer, working with the New York Fire Department, building officials and police, while learning from new techniques from construction in cities worldwide.

Finally, computerized simulations were used to calculate what would happen with people in the building.

One World Trade Center is 60 percent leased, with another 80,000 square feet going to the advertising firm Kids Creative, the stadium operator Legends Hospitality, the BMB Group investment adviser, and Servcorp, a provider of executive offices.

The government’s General Services Administration signed up for 275,000 square feet; and the China Center, a trade and cultural facility, will cover 191,000 square feet.

The space is at the top of the global price range, at $69 per square foot below the 63rd floor, and $80 to $100 going up.

By STEVEN DUBOIS The Associated Press PORTLAND, Ore. – Brittany Maynard’s last days started a national conversation about whether it’s OK for a terminally ill person to end their own life.

Now that she has died, it’s time to see whether the millions of clicks and views she generated online trigger more than just talk.

Advocates for expanding right-to-die laws beyond a handful of states expect attention from the young woman’s story to carry into the new year, when state legislatures go into session.

“Up and down New England, the East Coast and then in the West, too,” said Peg Sandeen, executive director of the Death with Dignity National Center. “I think on both coasts we’re going to see legislative action.”

That optimism, however, will be met with the political reality that such legislation has been pushed for years, often unsuccessfully.

“Suicide is never a good solution, regardless of the

situation that one is confronting,” said Judie Brown, president of the American Life League, a Catholic group.

Maynard, terminally ill with brain cancer, was in the national spotlight for about a month after publicizing that she and her husband, Dan Diaz, moved to Portland from Northern California so she could use the Oregon law to end her life on her own terms.

Maynard told journalists she planned to die Nov. 1, and followed through on Saturday.

She was 29.

She approached the advocacy group Compassion & Choices during the summer

in hopes that telling her story would lead to political action in California and across the nation. Whether that happens is an open question. But Maynard succeeded in raising awareness about an issue that was trending on Facebook and Twitter after her death.

“Younger people support death with dignity at really high levels, but it’s not necessarily relevant or salient to their lives,” Sandeen said. “I think the Brittany Maynard story makes it real.”

Vermont last year became the first state to legalize aid in dying through legislation – Oregon and Washington did

so by referendum; in Montana and New Mexico, it was effectively legalized through court decisions.

In New Jersey, the state Assembly considered but failed to pass an aid-in-dying bill in June. Democratic Assemblyman John Burzichelli, who authored the bill, said he is hopeful it can pass the state’s lower chamber before the end of the year. If that happens, he expects the Senate to pass it soon after, he said.

“It’s very clear to me that the majority voice in New Jersey want another choice,” Burzichelli said.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie has said he opposes the measure.

Compassion & Choice is spending about $7 million a year to protect the practice in states where it has been authorized and passing legislation in states where it has not, said Mickey MacIntyre, the group’s chief program officer.

The group said its website has had more than 5 million unique visitors over the past month. Maynard’s two videos have been viewed more than 13 million times on YouTube.

Family headstone spared by lava in Hawaii cemetery

By JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER The Associated Press HONOLULU – As slow-moving lava approached a cemetery in a rural Hawaii town, Aiko Sato placed flowers at the headstone of the family plot she’s tended to over the years, thinking it would be the last time she would see it.

“I made peace with myself,” Sato said Monday of visiting the Pahoa Japanese Cemetery on Oct. 23. A few days later, when lava smothered part of the cemetery, the family believed the headstone was covered.

But a photo taken Oct. 28 by a scientist documenting the lava’s progress showed the headstone engraved with the Sato name standing in a sea of black lava.

“I feel like it’s a miracle,” Sato, 63, said. “I know subsequent breakouts could cover the grave but at least I know it survived like a first round.”

The lava’s flow front stalled over the weekend and on Monday morning remained about 480 feet from Pahoa Village Road, which goes through downtown. A breakout of the flow remained about 100 yards from a house. Residents in the area have left or are preparing to leave.

Sato’s aunt, Eiko Kajiyama, 83, said she was heartbroken when she heard lava covered the cemetery. When she got the photo from the scientist, she hugged and thanked him, she recalled.

The Hawaii Volcano Observatory wouldn’t normally release such photos out of respect for the family of the deceased but provided the Sato family with a copy after a chance encounter between the family and an observatory scientist, observatory spokeswoman Janet Babb said in a statement.

“During their conversation, the scientist recalled that he had just seen the family headstone the night before and was able to provide information about its status,” the statement said. “Days later, while looking through HVO’s photos, he realized that this particular image showed the Sato headstone and offered to provide a copy to the family.”

Kajiyama said it feels like Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess, spared the headstone. “We’re so thankful we know the tomb is still there.” Her sister and brother, who died as infants, are buried there, along with the urns of her parents.

Kajiyama knows a breakout of the flow could later cover the cemetery.

BEIRUT – Al-Qaida-linked militants pressed an offensive Monday against Western-backed rebels in northern Syria, closing in on a vital border crossing with Turkey and exposing the weakness of mainstream opposition groups that the U.S. hopes to forge into a fighting force to take on Islamic extremists.

The Nusra Front’s recent surge has overrun strongholds in Syria’s Idlib province of two prominent rebel factions that proved unable to repel the assault despite getting arms and training from the U.S. The opposition groups’ collapse marks a significant setback to Washington’s plan of partnering with more moderate brigades to fight the Islamic State group and other radicals.

The Nusra Front – a bitter and bloody rival of the Islamic State group despite their shared extremist ideology – was massing its fighters Monday in the town of Sarmada near the Bab al-Hawa border crossing after sweeping through rebel-held towns and villages over the weekend. As the extent of the rout became apparent, reports also emerged that some rebels had pledged allegiance to the al-Qaida affiliate.

The fighting takes place against the backdrop of U.S.led airstrikes to roll back and destroy the Islamic State group.

“The Nusra Front is deeply suspicious of both the SRF and Harakat Hazm because they receive support from the U.S.,” said Aron Lund, editor of Syria in Crisis, a website run by the Carnegie Endowment. “The U.S. is also quite open about training rebels to take on both the Islamic State and al-Qaida, to which the Nusra Front belongs. So from the Nusra Front’s perspective, these groups aren’t just troublesome rivals, they’re a pro-Western fifth column that are slowly being readied for a purge of jihadis.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PAY DIVISION 1 COLLEGE ATHLETES To the Editor: The NCAA Division l should pay their players to play certain sports such as football and basketball. Players have poured their heart and soul to their own sport and be competitive in the division.

But for Division l athletes, it is more of a business, and you have a job to bring in a profit to the university.

There is a concern student athletes are putting in more hours than a typical American worker. The typical Division I college football player devotes 43.3 hours per week to his or her sport (21 Reasons, Forbes.com).

That is 3.3 more hours than the typical American work week.

Rather, they are core members of their university’s marketing team, as well as the labor force behind a lucrative secondary industry in hosting organized sporting events. Some schools such as Northwestern have begun the movement in getting college athletes to get to a players union.

They represent the university, but they also represent the companies that sponsor the university and team. Universities can be sponsored by three brand names: Adidas, Nike and Under Armor. Although the

companies are sponsoring the university, they also are sponsoring the individual athlete.

Many universities don’t look at their student athletes as business people, but they should be treated as such because they have a job when playing on and off the field.

Plenty of facts back up student athletes in a positive way to start a players union and will become a successful thing in the future if not now. College athletics have been evolving and will be changed through the future.

The loser in this election? The voters of Illinois Some of you will read this column before the election, and some of you will read it after. I suppose I could’ve written two columns, but I’ve been kinda busy, so let’s talk about one of the weirdest things that happened this campaign season.

Earlier this year, ultraconservative activist Jack Roeser told me his friend, Bruce Rauner, believed life began at conception. “I’d describe him as a guy who is a morally right-to-life guy, but not on the hustings,” Roeser, who has since passed away, said about Rauner.

Jack and many of his right-to-life allies backed Rauner every step of the way, while Rauner – who belatedly admitted he’s pro-choice – spent much of the Republican primary focusing his attention on pledging battles with the Springfield Democrats and their teachers union allies and fighting for term limits.

The candidate often has said he has “no social agenda” and instead would focus solely on cleaning up government and

VIEWS Rich Miller getting the economy running again. But he also wanted to avoid stressing the issue for fear of alienating a relatively small but still important base of Republican voters who just won’t vote for a pro-choicer of any party. Every vote counts, especially if you’re a Republican running in Democratic-leaning Illinois.

But the issue exploded during the campaign’s final week. As I’ve told you before, Local 150 of the Operating Engineers Union – one of Gov. Pat Quinn’s strongest supporters – spent big bucks supporting the unabashedly pro-life, pro-gun Libertarian Party candidate for governor, Chad Grimm.

The idea was to siphon votes away from Rauner. As I said, every vote counts if you’re a Republican in Illinois.

The Republican Party of Illinois pushed back, sending

mailers and doing thousands of robocalls warning Republicans that Quinn and his allies were trying to “steal” the election by pushing the Libertarian, and claiming Grimm was for gay marriage and belonged to a party that’s officially pro-choice.

Rauner has contributed about 80 percent of every dollar the party has raised. He installed a loyal ally as party chairman. They haven’t done much over there without first checking in with the candidate.

Meanwhile, the pro-choice group Personal PAC launched a TV attack ad on Bruce Rauner in Chicago. The ad urged viewers to vote for the statewide ballot initiative on employer-mandated birth control, and claimed Rauner had given millions to “right-wing groups and politicians who oppose birth control coverage” Rauner himself had aired a TV ad earlier only in the Chicago area touting his “prochoice” views. The Personal PAC ad was designed to counter Rauner’s message.

Not long after, the Raun-

er-funded Illinois Republican Party countered the Personal PAC ad with a Chicago TV ad claiming that the pro-choice Rauner was for employer-funded birth control.

Talk about your mixed messages on all sides.

You got Quinn-backing unions pushing an anti-union Libertarian because he’s prolife and pro-gun, while giving even more money to Quinn, who is pro-choice and a major proponent of gun control. You got a GOP candidate claiming he’s pro-choice and the almost totally Rauner-funded state GOP saying he’s for employer-funded birth control while spending big bucks (mostly Rauner’s) to warn rank-and-file Republicans against voting for a pro gay marriage candidate from a pro-choice party.

Whew.

The Democrats were outraged, incensed even, that Rauner would be so duplicitous. It was proof, they said, that Rauner really was anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage at heart.

The Democrats only said that in Chicago, of course.

The truth is they’ve been planning this all along. Folks at the top of the Quinn campaign told me last summer they were going to make trouble for Rauner with downstate conservatives by pushing him as far to the left as they could in Chicago. I even wrote about it.

Their close allies helped keep the pro-life, pro-gun Libertarian on the ballot when the Republicans tried to kick him off, and then they funded his campaign in order to peel votes away from Rauner.

In other words, the Quinn campaign was behind what spies call a “false flag operation.” And Bruce Rauner funded two diametrically opposed ad messages about abortion at the same time in an attempt to save his political neck.

Again, as I write this, I don’t know who won the election.

But I sure know who lost. You.

Joliet area volleyball is having a strong season, as four teams will battle in Class 4A and one will compete in Class 3A in sectionals that begin Tuesday evening with semifinal matches.

All five teams won their regional and have the talent to reach state.

The Indians (24-9) play at 5:30 p.m. against Normal Community, a tall and physical team just like Minooka. It will be a battle of who can keep the other team out of system.

“They play at a very fast pace and have great ball control,” Minooka coach Chris Hoelscher said. “Keeping them out of system and controlling the first contact will give us the best chance to win.”

It’s the first year since 2006 that Joliet Catholic will not face St. Francis in a sectional or supersectional. Anyone would sigh in relief at first, although Champaign Central – which the Angels meet at 6:30 p.m. – will not be easy to beat.

Central (30-7) boasts a better winning percentage than the Angels (2116), but Joliet Catholic has faced tougher competition. Setter Mary Murphy leads the team with 274 kills, 304 assists, 36 aces and 26 blocks. Middle hitter Maddie Naal (129 kills, 62 blocks, 16 aces) and outside hitter Madeline Grimm (187 kills, 20 blocks, 90 digs) are other key contributors. The Angels are peaking at the right time, but they have to play consistently to reach the sectional final.

“In the playoffs, we need to just play our game,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said. “We have seen tough competition all year and are prepared for anything that we may see. Our leaders need to step up and have good matches, and we need to keep our errors to a minimum. Passing will be key down the stretch so we can run the offense that we are capable of.”

Plainfield North (29-8) and Lincoln-Way East will face each other at 5:30 p.m., and it will not be easy for either. North is strong at the pins with outside hitters Allie Lindroth, Bailey Miller and right-side hitter Kaitlyn Fisher. The Tigers have good ball control and beat top-seeded Lincoln-Way North to make it this far. They have the momentum to win, but East also is talented.

Similar to North, East (24-13) has strong ball control but differs by being strongest in the middle. Middle hitter Sarah Dobrich leads the team in three categories with 46 aces, 159 kills and 75 blocks. Setters Kailey Hackett (43 aces, 141 kills, 259 assists, 213 digs, 39 blocks) and Leah Seielstad (34 aces, 329 assists, 223 digs) and libero Maddie Nirchi (363 digs, 400 receptions) also are having strong seasons.

“I feel that we have been playing very good ball the last half of the season,” Griffins coach Linda Vivona said. “If we play clean ball like we have with H-F and Joliet West, we have a very good chance of winning in the sectional matchups this week. We know Plainfield North has a strong outside hitter and a right side that we need to contain. Our passing has been doing a solid job, and we anticipate that our defense will be executing well.”

Plainfield Central (26-11) will play host T.F. South at 6:30 p.m. To combat the home court advantage and a skilled opponent, outside hitter Elizabeth Hyland and setter Ashley Shook must play the way they have all season.

Shook, who runs a 5-1 offense, has 705 assists, 105 kills, 29 aces, 90 blocks and 155 digs. Hyland has 363 kills, 16 aces, 64 blocks and 242 digs.

The Wildcats have two players who put up huge numbers, but they need a balanced attack to win. Coach Erik Vogt said outside hitter Erin Eulitz will play a big role against T.F. South.

“Erin Eulitz has been a rock star in the postseason and has won both matches for us down the stretch,” Vogt said. “To have success in the postseason, we need to play unselfish volleyball. We need to win the long rallies and not kill ourselves making mental

Providence, Lincoln-Way East get Round 2 rolling Friday STAFF REPORTS The Illinois High School Association on Monday announced official times and dates for second-round football playoff games around the state.

The nine Joliet area teams still standing from the original

group of 13 will be involved in nine separate games this weekend. Two will be on Friday and seven on Saturday.

The Friday matchups both will be in Class 7A. Providence (9-1) will travel to St. Rita (7-3) at 7 p.m. for the second time this season. The Celtics won there, 41-27, in a Chicago Cath-

olic Blue Conference game.

The other Friday game, also at 7 p.m., will be at Lincoln-Way East, where the Griffins (9-1) will host Reavis (8-2).

The glut of Saturday games is topped by the big one at Joliet Memorial Stadium, where Joliet Catholic (8-2) will host

its nemesis, Montini (7-3), at 1 p.m. in a Class 5A battle. The other matchup in Class 5A is a 3 p.m. start at Morris, with the Redskins facing Mahomet-Seymour.

In Class 6A Saturday, Richards (9-1) will visit Lincoln-Way West (9-1) at 2 p.m., and Lemont (10-0) will host

ry Francona ahead of the 2004 season. “I don’t want to ever be unfair to someone else. But as an executive and as someone charged with winning a World Series here, I had no choice but to do it. It was clearly the right move for the Cubs.”

After Epstein confirmed with Major League Baseball that Maddon had opted out of his contract, Hoyer informed Renteria about what was go-

ing on. Then Epstein and Hoyer flew to Florida to meet with Maddon, who was traveling cross country with his wife, Jaye.

“We kind of sat behind the Cousin Eddie. That’s our RV, the Cousin Eddie, a 43-foot Winnebago,” Maddon said, “and we sat back there and pretty much just talked philosophy about how this is all going to work. For me, that was the most important thing.

CHICAGO – Joe Maddon’s unusual road to the manager’s office at Wrigley Field included a job interview at an RV park in Pensacola, Florida.

The first public stop was a bar across the street from the iconic ballpark, where Maddon offered to buy a beer and a shot for everyone in the room.

“The Hazleton way,” he said in tribute to his Pennsylvania hometown.

If the beginning of Maddon’s partnership with the Cubs is any indication, this is going to be one interesting ride.

Maddon brought his unconventional style to Chicago when he was introduced Monday as the Cubs’ fifth manager since the start of the 2010 season, replacing Rick Renteria after just one year on the job.

Flanked by smiling executives Jed Hoyer and Theo Epstein, he slipped on a pinstriped No. 70 jersey and repeatedly said how he excited he was about his new job.

Perhaps more importantly, at least for a century’s worth of frustrated Cubs fans, he talked about winning – right now.

“Listen, for me, I’m going to be talking playoffs next year.

OK, I’m going to tell you that right now,” said Maddon, who got a $25 million, five-year contract – making him one of the highest paid managers in the game, “because I can’t go to spring training and say another thing. I’m just incapable of doing that. Why would you even report?”

The 60-year-old Maddon had a 754-705 record in nine seasons in Tampa Bay, leading the club to four playoff appearances, two AL East titles and a five-game loss to Philadelphia in the 2008 World Series. The two-time AL Manager of the Year also was the bench coach for six seasons under Angels manager Mike Scioscia before he was hired by Tampa Bay in November 2005.

The Cubs finished 73-89 in Renteria’s only season as a major league manager. The move puts the rest of Renteria’s staff in jeopardy; but pitching coach Chris Bosio attended Maddon’s introductory press conference, and Epstein made it sound as if he thinks most of the coaches will be retained.

Maddon inherits an impressive group of prospects and a bigger payroll after his successful run with the small-market Rays. But he also gets a run of five consecutive losing seasons and a famous title drought that goes back to the Cubs’ win in the 1908 World Series.

The Cubs haven’t made it to the playoffs since they won the NL Central in 2008 with Lou Piniella in the dugout. Epstein was hired after the Cubs went 71-91 in 2011, beginning a rebuilding process that included 101 losses in his first year in charge.

But Epstein thinks the Cubs are ready to contend right now, especially after the bold move to put Maddon in the dugout. First baseman Anthony Rizzo and shortstop Starlin Castro each made the All-Star team this year, and young sluggers Javier Baez and Jorge Soler had some positive moments in their first major league action.

“We believe that we’re transitioning away from a threeyear period where we were essentially only accumulating young talent, and now we’re competing,” Epstein said.

Maddon’s most pressing task is building on the development of the Cubs’ core group of young players, while paving the way for another wave of prospects that includes third baseman Kris Bryant and shortstop Addison Russell.

“Why would you not want to accept this challenge in this city in that ballpark under these circumstances with this talent?” Maddon said. “It’s an extraordinary moment.”

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush The Bears’ return to work Monday was greeted by a report from CBSSports.com that the team is in a “state of crisis.” “Players are tuning coach Marc Trestman out” and “there has been increased infighting in recent weeks, and the team’s dedication has been called into question at times by players and coaches alike.”

The report went on to suggest “several members of the organization feared for Trestman’s job” and that Trestman “has resonated with players more like a coordinator than a head coach, and that dynamic coupled with the issues in the locker room has created a toxic environment.”

Gosh, welcome back, guys.

It is bad form among reporters to judge their peers or challenge the veracity of their reporting short of a flat out violation of journalistic ethics, so I will forgo comment on the reporter in question.

I will, however, respectfully suggest he might want to reconsider his sources before his next big scoop.

Are the 3-5 Bears a bit of a mess coming out of their bye week? Yea, I’d say that’s fair.

But certainly anyone who thought Trestman might have been fired

after the Patriots game either didn’t attend his news conference the next day with general manager Phil Emery or failed to realize it took place.

Trestman and perhaps Emery, as well, could be in jeopardy if the second half of the 2014 season goes straight south, but there is no chance either would be jettisoned without a reasonable chance to right the ship.

Are players, coaches and front office folk alike unhappy, discouraged and for the most part really ticked off about 3-5? I really hope so, and yes they are, but I can’t get any of them to use the word crisis.

“Infighting” and “tuning out” are extremely relative terms that could certainly be speculated on from the few little tiffs that have actually been documented.

When asked about the report in general, here’s what Trestman had to say.

“The support in this building has been outstanding. That’s all I can say.

Everybody upstairs has been extremely supportive of the way we’re handling things. Our team has been unbelievably compliant in doing everything that we as coaches have asked them to do. That’s evident on the field. It’s evident in the locker room. It’s evident in the meeting room that these guys are an amazing group of men that have been extremely compliant. And the support has been there.”

But more importantly coach, what’s happened over the bye week that suggests the second half will be better?

“I think we went through a lot of different things last week that evolved into a plan.

The first part of the plan was to educate the guys on some of the things that we found, which are in-house things that we think we can do better with and continue to work through the week, utilizing some of those things that we picked up along the way, very similar to last year in terms of trying to improve in certain areas, and I think

we did that.”

C’mon coach, can you give us any specifics?

“I think that it came down to a number of things. It comes down to play selection.

It comes down to mental errors. It comes down to penalties. It comes down to those things that really are the result of things that you can control. That’s what we have to assess in our assessment – what are the things that we can control to be more consistent.”

So, here’s the only thing we can say for sure. On the Monday after everyone took the week off, Trestman appeared to be the exact same guy he was last season, in Bourbonnais and through the first half of this season.

It isn’t going to take long at all now to find out whether he still has his team or not, and just how good they can be.

Helping athletes achieve personal best Frankfort chiropractor served on U.S. Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Team

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent FRANKFORT – Of all sports, Frankfort chiropractor Dr. Aaron Wolfe said weightlifting has one of the greatest potentials for injury. With barbells up to 500 pounds, the smallest imbalance can cause a health catastrophe.

“If you catch it at a bad angle,” Wolfe said, “you can completely rupture a disc.

In October, Wolfe served on the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Team at the Olympics Training Center in Colorado Springs, helping weightlifters with their chiropractic needs at the three-day USA Weightlifting Open.

The selection process was quite rigorous, Wolfe said, but the committee had chosen him for the job twice – in 2005 and again in January 2014.

Athletes know well to stretch before workouts. Wolfe also recommends that all athletes, whether Olympic hopefuls or around-theblock walkers, stretch before going to bed at night.

“I believe everyone should be stretching before going to bed,” Wolfe said. “That’s the most important time to stretch. It helps you sleep so much better, and it relieves mental and physical stress. ... It helps blood flow, and it helps with morning aches and pains.”

Healthy stretching The American Chiropractic Association gives these tips for healthy stretching: n Never stretch a cold muscle (minimum of five minutes light jogging, biking, dancing, etc. before stretching). n Good form is extremely important when it comes to stretching – do not bounce. n Do not limit yourself to the exercises you enjoy or you are good at – make sure you are stretching all of your major muscle groups. n Your stretch point is the point at which you feel the stretch but not pain. n Flexibility is unique to each individual. Do not try to mimic another person’s stretch point.

You might feel like that when you look at today’s deal. It is the same as yesterday’s, but it has been rotated by 90 degrees. Yesterday, we discussed how to defeat three spades. But suppose that South buys it in three diamonds. What happens with best play by both pairs?

North’s negative double showed length in both minors. Then, over East’s cautious raise to two spades (he should have bid three spades -- get to the nine-trick level with nine trumps), South’s three-diamond rebid was aggressive. He might have passed, waiting for partner to double again with sufficient values to compete at the three-level.

This conventionally shows that West started with only those two clubs.

With ace-king-third or longer, he would have led the ace at trick one.

Dear Doctor K: What should I expect when my daughter goes through puberty? How can I help her as she goes through these changes?

Dear Reader: Full disclosure: I don’t have any personal or parental experience to tap into for this question.

Experienced colleagues and friends always emphasize how important it is to discuss puberty with your daughter before these changes begin. She needs to know what to expect and also that these changes are perfectly normal.

Otherwise, she might be frightened by the first signs of change, such as her first menstrual bleeding.

Puberty typically lasts for four or five years. In girls, it usually starts between the ages of 8 and 13. Remind your daughter that it is normal to begin puberty anywhere within this range. (But do mention it to your child’s doctor if your daughter is showing signs of puberty before age 8, or if there are no signs of puberty by age 13.)

During puberty, the whole body changes shape and size. For most girls, the first sign of puberty is breast growth. This will start with a small round lump (breast bud) under one or both nipples. The lump will gradually grow, along with the dark area around the nipples (areola).

A family friend once told me that her daughter had become terrified that she might have breast cancer when her breasts started to grow.

This happened not long after the girl overheard her mother telling a friend that “breast cancer runs in my family.”

Girls gain weight and muscle and grow taller during puberty.

This growth peaks about one year after puberty has begun. The storage of body

Hair grows in the pubic area, on the legs and under the arms. Glands in the skin make more oil and sweat.

Body odor and acne may become noticeable.

Most girls begin to have periods (menstruate) about two years after the start of breast development. On average, in the United States, girls get their first period around age 12 1/2. However, menstruation may start as early as 9 years or as late as 17 years old. A girl’s first few menstrual periods tend to be irregular, until the ovaries mature and start to produce eggs regularly.

In addition to these physical changes, puberty brings emotional changes. For example, many preteens feel anxious or self-conscious about the physical changes of puberty, especially when comparing themselves with others.

Your child’s moods will also change quickly and often during this time. Mood swings are normal and are probably related to changing hormone levels.

Do your best to support, encourage and guide your daughter though this new and different, but also exciting and important, time.

Even if you’ve done a good job of explaining what to expect, the changes of puberty may frighten your daughter.

Your ongoing explanation and reassurance are as important as your preparation of your daughter for the coming of puberty.
