JOLIET – Councilman Jim McFarland’s use of city envelopes for political purposes has been referred to the state’s attorney’s office.

The city issued a news release on the McFarland matter after meeting in closed session to discuss it Monday.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and other council members referred to the news release when asked about the closed meeting.

“The matter has been turned over to the state’s attorney for review of potential violations of state or federal law,” the release states.

McFarland said last week that he had used the envelopes “inadvertently” when sending out a letter about a Facebook page for lost pets that he had created and for a flyer about a pancake breakfast for veterans that was paid for by his campaign committee.

The news release indicates

that city officials first learned about the letter, and McFarland as well as other council members were warned about political use of city stationery.

“Subsequent to that mailing, the City became aware that Councilman McFarland sent additional mailings unrelated to City Business utilizing the City envelopes with a flyer specifically stating that they were paid for by him or his campaign funds,” the release states.

McFarland went into the closed meeting when it began but left before it was over. He could not be reached later for comment.

The closed meeting Monday marked the third time the council met in executive session to discuss McFarland’s use of the envelopes.

The city news release said McFarland in early October had made an “ordinary request” that the city manager’s office provide him envelopes with his name as city councilman in the corner.

Those who attend will learn more about how Will and DuPage counties want to partner with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to investigate overbank and backwater flooding along the DuPage River and its major tributaries, according to a Will County news release.

Overbank flooding in April 2013 resulted in significant damage to critical infrastructures, several residential and nonresidential structures, and the closure of Interstates 80 and 55. A previous major flooding event in 2008 affected areas within Plainfield, Shorewood and Channahon.

“I inadvertently did it, and it won’t happen again,” he said.

Parishioners carry on centuries-old All Souls’ Day tradition

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Beneath a darkened autumn sky, St. Joseph Catholic Church Rev. Timothy Andres led parishioners by flashlight Monday night through rows of cemetery gravestones, praying for loved ones who have passed on but remain caught in purgatory.

“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen,” Andres said, his words echoed by the 50 or so parishioners who formed a semicircle before him.

“Have mercy on their burning desire to see you, have mercy on their tears of repentance.

Through the merits of your passion, remit the sentence they incurred by their sins,” Andres said.

Those who stood in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery on the unusually warm November evening were united for the same purpose: All Souls’ Day. Behind them, candles flickered softly, reflecting in a red glow off the tombstones.

The centuries-old day of prayer is observed by Catholics and other religious denominations each year Nov. 2 to honor the souls of loved ones and strangers who died and are caught in purgatory before moving onto heaven. The holiday follows All Saints’ Day – which is celebrated Nov. 1 to remember those who already have entered the gates of heaven.

“It’s to remember the souls, those who have gone before us,” said Rosemary Markon of Joliet, who visited the cemetery Monday with her husband, Frank.

She said All Souls’ Day unites the spiritual bond among those in purgatory – the church suffering; those in heaven – the church triumphant; and the living – the church militant.

“It’s to unite those three,” Markon said, noting how she

Beth Starasinich and her family placed a candle on the grave of her uncle, U.S. Marine Pvt. David E. Connor, who served in World War II. They placed a piece of foil around the candle’s outer edge in hopes of it burning through the night.

“It’s a nice tradition,” she said.

Starasinich said her great-grandparents and grandparents were pioneers of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Holding her rosary tightly in her hand, Butterbach said: “Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.”

She said her and her granddaughter’s rosaries were blessed years ago by Pope John Paul II. Butterbach said she brought her granddaughter to All Souls’ Day to carry on the tradition, but also to pay respects to loved ones in purgatory.

“It’s a powerful prayer,” she said.

Plainfield program pairs young artists Art Buddies has students help those with disabilities create art projects More online

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – As students paired up last week with a partner in an art class at Plainfield East High School, Niko Witt sat by himself waiting to paint a tiny white pumpkin.

“Niko, do you have a buddy?” said Michele Rickerson, a special education teacher.

Watt is a senior student who is part of the Secondary Community Occupational Real-Life Education – or SCORE – program at Plainfield East. The program focuses on functional skills for students in special education.

“I’m right here,” said Iman Abdur Rab. Rab, a junior student, is a volunteer for the Art Buddies program that meets monthly with students in the SCORE program to create art projects.

Rab helped Witt paint a pumpkin while teaching him how to mix primary and secondary colors to produce other colors.

She helped Witt paint his pumpkin light blue and showed him how to use the brush in a way that allowed for more coats.

Students in SCORE have taken art classes since 2008, but the Art Buddies program allows them to work one-onone with their peers. Ackerson

said students in SCORE get to socialize with peers outside the program through Art Buddies while developing their creative skills.

“The fact that it’s handson and visual and auditory is

helping them learn,” Ackerson said.

Art Buddies is in its second year and began when students part of the National Art Honor Society wanted to find a community service project to par-

ticipate in, said Cindy Egizio, Plainfield East art teacher and co-sponsor of the National Art Society. The students decided to work with the SCORE program on art projects.

In September, the students made a bottle cap key chain.

“It’s a chance for them to take what they learn and pass it on,” Egizio said about the art honors students. “Art brings joy to all people on some level.”

Jenny Trevino, a junior student and Art Buddies volunteer, worked with Melissa Marquez to paint a pumpkin purple and fiery red. Like Rab, Trevino said she wanted to volunteer because she likes helping people.

“There are people who use art in different ways to express themselves. … Imagination is how someone defines themselves as a person,” Trevino said.

Joliet student intervention program receives new partner

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A new partner has joined an intervention program at Joliet Township High School District 204 that struggled with funding issues before the school year began.

Nonprofit organization Chestnut Health Systems will join 15 other community partners with the Youth Experiencing Success in School – or YESS – program at District 204.

The YESS program, which helps hundreds of students with social and emotional needs, was almost eliminated

because of a lack of funding before the school year began.

District and Will County officials worked to preserve YESS on a short-term basis while finding a way to keep it going in the long run. Now Bloomington-based Chestnut Health Systems is a YESS partner; it will help district officials treat students with substance abuse issues.

“Having the [YESS] program within our schools, we know our students are receiving treatment consistently,” Joliet West Assistant Principal Jo Wooten said.

She said Chestnut Health

Systems plans to have one staff member from its organization visit the West and Central campuses one day a week. Staff also will visit the Joliet Alternate High School as needed.

The organization already is working with District 204 officials, who plan to give the organization office space this week, Wooten said. Chestnut’s services come at no cost to the district, she said. Instead, the agency works with parents or guardians on billings.

Chestnut Health Systems reached out to District 204 in May to form a partnership.

Will County was identified by

the organization as one of the areas where substance abuse counseling for adolescents is sparse.

The organization uses an evidence-based approach called Adolescent Community Reinforcement that replaces external causes of alcohol or drug use among adolescents with positive activities that support recovery.

“They work very closely with us to get students involved in student activities. They’re finding ways for them to have fun rather than dabbling in drugs,” Wooten said.

Chestnut Health Systems

will be one of three organizations providing on-campus services. Wooten said a Will County probation program and mental health staff continue to work at District 204.

The YESS program almost was eliminated this year when the Will County Health Department could not provide staff support because of state funding cuts.

The program still has interns from the department, but the hours for YESS Program Manager Michelle Zambrano, who also works for Will County, were cut more or less in half, Wooten said.

Cops: Student brought loaded NOVEMBER SPECIALS gun to Lincoln-Way West REMOTE CONTROL STARTERS

bstanley@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A Lincoln-Way West student reportedly brought a loaded gun to campus Monday morning.

Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said police were called after the principal and school resource officer found the handgun in a 16-year-old boy’s backpack

before classes began.

“The teen had been at a party this weekend showing off the gun to other students, and a student notified the faculty [Monday] morning,” Ackerson said.

The boy was arrested on weapons charges and booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Joliet.

Lincoln-Way Superintendent Scott Tingley said in a

statement the gun belonged to the student’s family member.

“District 210 officials, in conjunction with local law enforcement authorities, remain committed to protecting the students and staff at all four schools,” Tingley said.

“All parties continue to work together to investigate any issues that potentially threaten public safety.”

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – Authorities believe an 80-yearold woman died last week as the result of a condo fire that extinguished itself.

Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said deputies were called Saturday afternoon after Carol D. Kozak had not been seen for several days by neighbors on Red Berry Circle in the Carillon community.

Lockport Township Fire Chief Dave Skoryi said police asked firefighters for assistance to enter the residence through the garage.

“Inside they found heat and fire damage throughout the residence from a fire that had occurred quite earlier,” Skoryi said. “It appears the fire, which began in a bedroom,

LIHEAP funds Joliet family man needs kidney transplant, praying for live donor available in Will County SHAW MEDIA

He is praying God will grant him both.

Peto, who is in stage 4 kidney failure, said his kidneys are working at 17 percent of their normal capacity – not quite low enough for dialysis, but hardly sufficient for him to feel healthy.

And yet, Peto, a 26-year-employee for the Illinois Department of Corrections, continues to work full time.

“I have no choice,” he said.

“I have a family to support. I can’t even think about retiring until August, and that would make me 50.”

Peto is worried about the future for his wife, Anne, and their children – Emily Rachel, 11, and Neil Edward, 10 – should anything happen to him.

Doctors feel his only hope is a kidney transplant, Peto said. They told him to expect a five- to six-year wait for a cadaver kidney, and that finding a match from a living donor is more realistic.

So Peto is trying hard to find one.

Anne created a flier detailing the need that the family is distributing: “God gave us two kidneys ... one can be a gift to save another life, please be our angel on earth.” Another friend created a sign for Peto’s car, and the next step is have yard signs made.

Peto’s health challenges began in 2013, Anne said, when he developed a double pulmonary infection. Then he was diagnosed with a genetic heart disorder and underwent a mitral valve repair. And then Peto learned his kidneys were operating at 39 percent.

Testing showed Anne was a good match to donate a kidney and her hopes soared – until it was learned one of the chemotherapy treatments she received when she had breast cancer years ago was incompatible with donating.

“I was so devastated by that,” Anne said.

As excruciatingly fatigued as Peto constantly feels and despite restless sleep, Anne is thankful Peto still works. She’s afraid exhaustion would keep him in bed if he wasn’t employed.

Peto said he is aware a transplant is a mixed blessing, as his health would return but it requires a lifetime of expensive immunosuppressant drugs.

But Peto’s mind doesn’t linger there. His concern is for his family; it’s the energy that drives him.

“I’ve tried to come up with alternate plans if things get really bad,” Peto said.

Mostly, he clings to hope.

“I know Jesus has a plan for me,” Peto said. “I believe this is part of it. I believe doors are being opened.”

The Will County Center for Community Concerns, an administrator of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, announced Monday that funds are available to assist with winter utility bills.

LIHEAP began accepting Oct. 1 applications for households with a family member 60 or older, or receiving Social Security disability benefits, according to a news release from WCCCC. As of Nov. 2, LIHEAP will accept applications for households whose service has been disconnected for non-payment or with a child younger than 6. Starting Dec. 1, the program is available to all income-eligible Will County households.

Applications will be taken through May 31 or until funding has been exhausted.

LIHEAP Emergency Furnace Assistance is available to low-income households whose existing heating systems are not operational or have been red-tagged by

a utility company. Households must be at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level to enroll.

Applications will be taken at WCCCC, 2455 Glenwood Ave. in Joliet, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, or until the daily sign-in sheet is full.

“Wash your hands frequently and get enough rest,” reminds Dr. Catherine Ferrario, a professor and the nurse practitioner in the school’s student health center. Those tips are especially true for those already feeling under the weather because “it can get much worse if they don’t get enough rest.”

Viruses that infect the ear, nose and throat are what cause influenza. Symptoms include sore throat, cough, congestion, chills, fever, aches, headaches, and fatigue. The flu can range from mild and relatively brief to severe and long-lasting. Flu viruses are spread mostly by the moisture emitted by sneezes, coughing and talking. It’s possible for the flu to spread through contact with surfaces that have the virus on it, but less likely.

The flu is typically most contagious about 24 hours before symptoms show to seven days after becoming ill.

Along with good hand hygiene, Dr. Ferrario advises to drink plenty of water daily. She also encourages people of all ages to get a flu vaccine.

She noted that the number of patients with flu symptoms being treated at the University of St. Francis hadn’t shown any sharp increase through late October. Cases of the flu typically spike between November and January, she said.

“And if you’re sick it’s always best to stay home from work.”

Ruby Marie Ferro (nee Culo), age 87, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Born on August 24, 1928, to the late Maurice and Ruby (Gray) Culo.

Ruby is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Peter A. Ferro; and their three sons, Peter (Sharon), John (Rebecca) and Jim (Ann) Ferro; eight grandchildren, Nicholas (Missy) Ferro, Danielle (Jeff) Weiss, Allison (Matt) Marketti, Monica (Ned) Grabavoy, Vince Ferro, Doug (Angie) Ferro, Veronica Ferro and Amanda Ferro; 11 great-grandchildren also survive.

Ruby graduated from Joliet Township High School and before her marriage she worked at Gerlach-Barklow Calendar Company in Joliet. She loved doing crafts and made many memorable items for her family throughout the years that they now will cherish in her memory.

Ruby was also preceded in death by her sisters, Elaine (Bob) Ehrsam and Betty (Don) Hadala; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Rolle and Lena Kurth, Tony and Rosella Ferro, Leno and Rosie Giacomi.

ESTHER L. HARMON Esther Loretta (Meagher) Harmon, age 97 and 8 months, passed away peacefully on Oct. 31, 2015. Having won the “lottery of life” to “Live Long and Die Short,” Mrs. Harmon will be missed by her loving family and many friends.

A native of Ottawa IL, and long-time resident of Joliet (1945-1978), Coal City IL (1978- 2010), and Morris IL (2010-2015), Mrs. Harmon is survived by her four children (Margy Tippie of Salem VA, Ellie Roe of Roseville CA, Larry Harmon of Show Low AZ, and Marci Ariagno of Menlo Park CA); plus 15 Grandchildren, 35 Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren who reside in IL, VA, FLA, TX, and CA), and who will miss her gentle ways and ever-positive outlook on life.

ROBERT J. PICHA Robert J. Picha, age 73, passed suddenly on Saturday, October 31, 2015.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Mary (nee Sexton); loving daughters, Margaret (John) Hanson, Susan (John) Bailey, and Kathryn (Robert) Legler; cherished grandchildren, Andrea Hanson, Joseph Bailey, Veronika Legler, and Karoline Legler; dear brother, Donald (Marjorie) Picha; dear sister-in-law, Janice (the late Wayne) Picha; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bob was born in Joliet and was a Plainfield resident until ‘97, currently residing in Havana, IL. He retired from Caterpillar where he served 37 years as a Manufacturing Engineer. He was a dedicated member of the Joliet Legion Band since 1960, serving as the Band’s Concert Master (principal clarinetist) since 1978. Bob was a former member of Joliet Junior College Community Band and Delwood Park Band. He provided clarinet lessons to many of the area’s band students. He played for Honor Flights with Frankfort Brass Band. Bob was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, hunting, and family gatherings.

A Celebration of Robert’s life will begin on Thursday, November 5, 2015, with prayers in the funeral home chapel at 9:20 a.m. then driving in procession to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Nodine in Indiana. Herman farmed for Rink Farms, Inc. in Wilmington for more than 45 years, and was a member of Saint Rose Catholic Church. A proud NRA member, Herman was an avid hunter and fisherman, as well as all around handyman.

Herman enjoyed reading, watching westerns, working with auto mechanics, and going to lunch and coffee with his friends.

Survivors include his four children, Gary Westrick of Streator, Daniel Westrick of Diamond, Christina Fiedler of Coal City and James Westrick of Riverside, California; eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty on October 2, 2004; and his three brothers.

Visitation and Video Tribute will be on Thursday, November 5, 2015, between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road in Wilmington. Born in Pontiac, IL, living in Lockport for over 55 years. Retired from the State of Illinois as an EPA Agent after 35 years of service. Bill was a United States Army Veteran.

Preceded in death by his parents, John and Stacia (Bocek) Zenisek; three brothers and three sisters.

$181M in fuel taxes owed to local governments

SPRINGFIELD – The state of Illinois is more than $181 million behind in distributing monthly motor fuel tax revenue to municipalities, counties and other local governments amid the ongoing state budget impasse.

Records from the Illinois comptroller’s office show more than $89 million is owed to municipalities and $63.6 million is owed to counties. Another roughly $29 million hasn’t been given to smaller townships and road districts, and many rely on the funding for most of their maintenance and repair budgets.

“I’ve been around this almost 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Bryan Smith, executive director of Township Officials of Illinois, told the State Journal-Registe.

The state Department of Transportation has told local governments that the funds would be given out when there’s a state budget. The fund is expected to grow as the state budget impasse goes on.

Rich Carter, spokesman for the Illinois comptroller’s office, said in an email that the comptroller can’t release the motor fuel tax funds without a budget, statutory authority or a court order.

The funds don’t collect interest and can’t be used for any other purpose, he said.

The delay in payments, Smith said, is especially hard for small, rural townships where the money goes toward uses such as road repairs and road salt. He said he’s hearing “a lot of concerns, especially with winter getting close.”

CHICAGO – Chicago police say they won’t charge a customer with a concealed carry license who shot and killed an armed man during an attempted robbery of a store on the city’s southwest side.

U.S.: School wrong in barring transgender locker room access

CHICAGO – The U.S. Department of Education said a suburban Chicago school district is violating the rights of a transgender student in refusing to allow use of the girls’ locker room.

The student filed a federal complaint against Palatine Township School District 211, asking for unrestricted access to the locker room. The district proposed a compromise that would allow access, but require the student to change and shower in a separate area.

Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon on Monday said District 211 is not following the law because the district continues to deny a female student the right to use the girls’ locker room.

Lhamon went on to day the district can provide access to the student while also respecting all students’ privacy.

Telephone calls to the District 211 for comment weren’t immediately returned.

Insurers sue Illinois over life insurance policy audit

CHICAGO – Three insurers have sued Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs over an attempt to seek records on life insurance policies.

Frerichs said Monday an audit was sought to find unpaid death benefits because returning unclaimed property is part of his office’s mission. Frerichs said

beneficiaries might be unaware policies exist. The information received would be checked against a federal death database.

The lawsuit filed last week in Sangamon County argues the treasurer doesn’t have such authority; benefits are paid if there’s a claim and proof of death.

The insurers are Chicago-based Kemper Corp. subsidiaries: United Insurance Company of America in Illinois, Reserve National Insurance Company in Oklahoma and The Reliable Life Insurance Company of Missouri.

Kemper said in a Monday statement that it’s paid valid claims and followed state law for years.

Archaeologists digging along Des Plaines River

DES PLAINES – A 10-person crew of archaeologists and interns are digging for historic artifacts along the Des Plaines River in suburban Chicago.

“There’s hardly any property left in Cook County where we could find out this information about past life ways and how they used the land and their subsistence strategies,” Jenny Benish, a staff archaeologist with the Illinois State Archaeological Survey, told the Arlington Heights Daily Herald.

The project is being run with The Prairie Research Institute’s State Archaeological Survey, the Illinois State Water Survey and the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

The archaeologists recovered settlement sites in the southern suburbs of Chicago earlier this year. Now they’re they working along the river in northwestern Cook County.

The forest preserve has about 550 archaeological sites that span the first paleo hunter gatherers to periods around World War II, Benish said.

“The whole of the human habitation is represented in these sites that have been protected from urbanization,” she said.

Lauren Fitts, also a staff archaeologist with the Illinois Archaeological Survey, found a piece of ceramic pottery dating back about 1,000 years when she was clearing land along the river.

Elizabeth Ann (Johnson) Wheeler, 61, passed away from this world to her heavenly home on Friday, October 30th, at her home in Coatesville, PA after a three-year battle with cancer, surrounded by her family.

Beth was loved by all who knew her. She was the ultimate hostess and homemaker, and her life was truly lived to the fullest.

Her strong faith in Jesus Christ was shown in her everyday life through care and compassion for everyone, especially family and friends. She was known by all for her sacrificial love and infectious laughter.

Survived by her husband of 31 years, Dan Wheeler; daughters, Kirstyn (Jeff) Hauser and their two sons, Cole Daniel and Gavin Tayler of Downingtown, PA and Kelsey Wheeler of Coatesville, PA; mother, Elaine Johnson of Palos Hills, IL; sister, Carol (Tom) Bellone of Santa Clara, CA; brother, Roy (Paulette) Johnson of Plainfield, IL; and many close family members, brothers and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews; preceded in death by her father, Ralph Johnson.

Visitation was held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2nd and on Tuesday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at Beth’s home church, Calvary Fellowship Downingtown, 95 West Devon Drive, Downingtown. Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said investigators classified the shooting as self-defense after they reviewed witness statements and surveillance videos from the store and currency exchange.

The shooting occurred at 7 p.m.

Saturday. Police say a masked man, later identified as 55-yearold Reginald Gildersleeve, displayed a handgun and announced he was robbing the store.

The customer fatally shot Gildersleeve sometime after the robber pointed his weapon at an employee and forced her to the back of the store.

Police have not identified the customer.

The Metrojet was flying at 31,000 feet over the Sinai when it crashed Saturday only 23 minutes after taking off from the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for St. Petersburg with mostly Russian passengers.

Metrojet firmly denied the crash could have been caused by either equipment failure or crew error.

“The only possible explanation could be an external impact on the airplane,” Metrojet’s deputy director Alexander Smirnov told a news conference in Moscow.

When pressed for more details, Smirnov said he was not at liberty to discuss them because the investigation was ongoing.

Asked if the plane could

have been brought down by a terrorist attack, he said only that “anything was possible.”

But Russia’s top aviation official, Alexander Neradko, dismissed the company’s statement as premature and unfounded.

In televised comments from Egypt, Neradko said it would be possible to draw conclusions about the crash only after experts examined the plane’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders and studied the wreckage.

He said the large area where debris were scattered indicated the jet had broken up at a high altitude, but he refrained from citing a reason for the crash pending the investigation.

Viktor Yung, another deputy director general of Metrojet, said the crew did not send a distress call and did not contact traffic controllers before the crash.

Egyptian officials have offered conflicting accounts on whether the plane issued any distress calls.

Leaders need to face reality For months now, Gov. Bruce Rauner has said he won’t negotiate a state budget unless his “Turnaround Agenda” demands are met.

In the meantime, he has slashed funding for the child care assistance program, homeless services have been decimated, mental health services are going without cash, universities are struggling and even the Meals on Wheels service for the elderly is cutting back deliveries.

But one of the most important things missing from the debate over that “Turnaround Agenda” is how much money the governor’s proposals will truly save state and local governments.

Is it really worth all this pain?

There is simply no hard, reliable, trustworthy data out there because numbers from both sides of the debate on union-related subjects like the prevailing wage are so steeped in ideology.

Among other things, the governor is demanding that local governments, including school districts, be allowed to opt out of paying the prevailing wage on construction and other projects.

The amount is set by county and all publicly financed projects must pay those wages.

Unions say killing off the prevailing wage won’t save much if any money because productivity will drop when inexperienced, low-wage employees are used to replace trained construction and trades workers.

But, just for the sake of argument, let’s take the proponents at their word on this particular topic.

All-America guard Jamie Johnson, a three-time winner in the women’s competition, lost in the finals of the 3-point

shooting contest, 23-19, to men’s freshman guard Jake Reinhart.

“I’m saving some up for the season,” Johnson said with a smile.

That’s bad news for Flyers’ opponents. Lewis finished 31-3 and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in

March, when Johnson and fellow All-American Mariyah Brawner-Henley led the charge in Lisa Carlsen’s final season as head coach. She has moved on to Northern Illinois University.

In her place at Lewis is Kristen Gillespie, whose dad, Mike, was a standout at Joliet Catholic and DePaul and has had

a long and successful career coaching the game. Of course, Kristen also is the granddaughter of the late Gordie Gillespie.

The genes are strong.

“I am blessed to be here,” Gillespie said. “I inherited 14 of the best young women anyone could ask to coach. They have embraced what we are trying to do.”

Despite the return of Johnson and Brawner-Henley, however, things might be a little different for the Flyers, at least for a while.

“We lost four key seniors from last year, so it’s different,” Gillespie said. “We are trying to get better every day

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Saturday marks the longest road trip in the young history of Lincoln-Way West’s football program.

And the Warriors hope their 500-mile roundtrip visit to Troy Triad in St. Louis Metro East pays dividends by assuring their third quarterfinal berth in the past four years.

After missing out on a trip to the quarterfinals last year in Class 6A, coach Dave Ernst’s squad hopes to claim their third trip to the final eight in Class 5A in the 3 p.m. game.

To do so, the Warriors (8-2) will have to prevent the Knights (9-1) from reaching their third quarterfinals, which they last advanced to in 2005.

After dropping a tough loss to rival Lincoln-Way North in their regular-season finale, the Warriors bounced back with a 35-12 victory over Dunlap in their playoff opener.

“We feel really good as a team,” said senior right guard Bryan Brokop, who is headed to the University of Nebraska.

“We’re playing for each other and as a team, I haven’t played with a better group of guys.

We’re motivated and get after it day in and day out.

“We’re the most focused group that I’ve been around and I think we can get the job done, there’s no question about it. We’re more motivated than ever.”

Although a four-hour bus ride can be a distraction before a big game, West’s players don’t see the long trip as being much of an issue.

“Everyone has been really dialed in, and we’re practicing really well,” junior linebacker Trey Telez said. “Everyone is really focused and wants to win, and we have a real good attitude. We had a tough loss to North but used it as motivation and it really showed in our last game.

“It will be a long ride, but I think that we’re focused and ready for it, so I think we’ll be all right. We just have to go out and play our game.”

Triad rolled past Mattoon for the second time this season to advance. It only played three other teams with winning records, falling to Althoff in its regular-season finale after beating Highland and Civic Memorial.

“We feel pretty good coming off of our win since everyone did their jobs,” sophomore middle linebacker Ryan Robbins said. “This week, we’re trying to get their offense down since it’s a pretty tough one to read, but we’ll account for their play-

done.

“It’s a long trip so we just need to stay focused on the long bus ride and get in there and do what we need to do. We’re all good friends and we trust each other very much and that’s a big part in how we run this defense.”

With a victory, the Warriors will have reached the nine-win mark for the third year in a row.

That also would set up either a home contest against Peoria or a game at Centralia.

“Four-plus hours is a long time to stay focused on a bus ride, but I have confidence in our guys,” senior tight end Ben Zordani said. “Our last loss was kind of a wakeup call and it showed us that we had

to play harder than we did in that game. That’s really going to help propel us through the postseason.

“Offensively, we have a real strong run game and we’ve been able to pass the ball more lately.

My confidence in the defense is also pretty high, so I think we’ll get the job done.”

One of the interesting story lines for West is junior quarterback Cal Pohrte stepping in for the injured Connor Lowman.

Although he hadn’t played much on the varsity, Pohrte performed well in the playoff game and feels confident about the future.

“I give all the credit to the offensive line since they make the job easier,” Pohrte said. “And then when you hand off to one of the best running backs in the state in Gabe Montalvo, it also helps. I haven’t played a lot on the varsity but I waited for my time to really show what I can do and with Connor’s bad injury, I knew that I needed to step up to get us a win.

“The guys have told me to believe in myself and they’ll help get me through it. This is probably the best group of guys that I’ve been with. They’re fun and an energetic group that will have your back no matter what and get you through tough situations.”

Only one area team will remain in Class 4A come Wednesday because Joliet West (30-6) and Minooka (2710) meet Tuesday night.

West entered the regional ranked No. 2 in the sectional, dominated CreteMonee and held off a hot Lincoln-Way Central.

The Tigers need to serve tough Tuesday to have success, but that shouldn’t be a problem. Nicole Ochs (63, 1.8 a match), Lauren Stefanski (58, 1.6) and Shannon Doran (45, 1.3) rank in the area top 10 for aces.

Along with serving aggressively, West will need to hit hard to combat Minooka’s strong offense.

“We must stay aggressive in our mindset and execute the game plan,” coach Al Mart said.

Last week, No. 6 Minooka took down No. 3 Plainfield Central in two games.

In large part, the Indians pulled the upset because of their consistent passing, defense and incredibly strong offense.

If Minooka can pass and defend well against the Tigers, its offense will shine.

Two hitters – Ginger Perinar (356, 10.2 a match) and Alli Papesh (210, 6.0) – rank in the area top 10 in kills, and the Indians are well-balanced.

Providence will see Morris (15-17-2) in the semifinal Tuesday, and the Redskins boast the leading hitter in the area. Kaylin Korte averages more than 15 kills and has 517 for the season. Morris also has a hard-swinging right side in Janelle Brehm.

“For us to be successful in sectionals, I think we need to just come in and play our game,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “We will need to minimize our mistakes and capitalize on our opponent’s mistakes. At this stage, we have to come out ready to play and be ready to give it everything. We have really started to come

To combat Korte and Brehm, Celtics libero Emily Boggetto will have to defend well, middles Katie Compagno and Caitlin Stephens will have to limit Morris’ kills and Providence’s offense will have to produce.

Passing, defending and playing well-rounded has been the Providence’s strength throughout the season, however.

“We need to stick to our game plan,” coach Brie Isaacson said. “Pass well, play tough defense and stay balanced. We have worked on it all season.”

Whoever wins that semifinal will face the winner of the JCA-Manteno semifinal.

Joliet Catholic is the No. 2 seed in the sectional, but if any team in the area has had postseason success historically, it’s JCA. The Angels (22-12) took second in state last year and have several returning players including libero Meghan Harrison. Harrison has the best dig-a-match average in the area, 12.9, with 439 total.

Similar to Providence, JCA has a well-rounded team that has strong first contact. Even though the Celtics beat the Angels,

2-0, at the beginning of the year, the Angels always are a team to watch at this time of year.

“JCA needs to play clean volleyball and execute the game plan given to them by the coaches,” coach Christine Scheibe said. “We also need to play to our tradition of being Angels.”

Class 2A McNamara Sectional

Wilmington (15-13) was the fifth seed in the sub-sectional but beat Momence, Seneca and Bishop McNamara to capture a regional title.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats will face Morgan Park Academy, and the winner will play the winner of the Chicago Catalyst/Maria-Watseka semifinal.

Wilmington will look to Lexi Plese for leadership.

The junior middle has 176 kills, a 6.3 a-match average, and 33.5 blocks.

Behind Plese, the Wildcats will look to play their best volleyball.

“All season, we have worked on controlling our side of the net,” coach Laura Wakefield said. “We cannot change what the other team is doing, but we can do our very best to be successful on our side of the net and play one point at a time.”

Lewis’ 6-foot-6 sophomore forward entertained the student body during the slamdunk competition at the recent Fan Fest at Neil Carey Arena. He defended the championship he won as a freshman as his efforts merited 97 points of a possible 100 from a panel of judges.

Strus’ chief rival came in the form of 6-1 junior guard Miles Simelton, a transfer from Lehigh. Followers of the Southwest Prairie might remember Simelton from his all-state days at Oswego.

The Strus-Simelton duo represents the two ends of the spectrum that 10-year Flyers coach Scott Trost has at his disposal. With familiar names such as Ryan Jackson, Julian Lewis, Jeff Jarosz and Gabe Williams having graduated, the cupboard at first glance might seem bare.

However, Strus returns, along with three-year starter Kyle Nelson, Lincoln-Way Central graduate Brad Foster and Capel Henshaw. Nelson and Foster are seniors, Henshaw a junior.

“We have 13 guys on the roster, and nine of them do

not have meaningful experience with us,” Trost said.

“But we have a good nucleus with the four guys who are back, and Miles Simelton is a D-I talent.

“There always are expectations here. Tradition never graduates.”

Lewis finished 22-9 last season, which ended with a loss to Indianapolis in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional semifinals. With the rugged Great Lakes Valley Conference dominating the schedule and the significant graduation losses, posting a similar record might be difficult.

“What we are doing now is focusing on the process, how hard we have to play and work,” Trost said. “We have to change the way we play the game. Offensively, Kyle Nelson has been a 5; he will have to play some 4.

“There are new rules this year. The shot clock is 30 seconds instead of 35, and they’re supposed to call more fouls. They’re supposed to call hand-checking and get away from the physical play.

So some staples that you do will have to be different.”

For his part, Nelson said he is not a big fan of limiting physical play.

“I hate the ticky-tack calls, but once we learn to play that way, it will be OK,” he said.

Strus averaged 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds last season as a freshman. Nelson averaged 7.3 points, Henshaw 4.2 and Foster 3.3.

“It’s a whole different team,” Strus said. “We’re

young, but we have six new guys who I feel can take the team where we were last year.

“This (Fan Fest) is a good atmosphere to start the year.

There are more people here than there were last year.”

Strus said his role is evolving. With all the senior leadership last season, he could work on improving his game and fitting in.

“This year I have to focus on being a leader,” he said.

“I’ll probably be more vocal.

Anything the team needs.”

Nelson said he is anxious for the new season. The Flyers have an exhibition game Friday at Loyola and open the regular season the next weekend in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge.

“We are young and learning,” Nelson said. “We have guys who are ready to step in.

I think Foster will be a huge part of our offense. When we want to go big, he can be a force in the paint. We battle hard all the time in practice.

He’s really a good guy.”

Nelson said what happens in the Lewis program has not changed in his four years.

“We’re going to be good,” he said. “We always win 18, 19, 20 games. We have an excellent team and coach, so we don’t expect anything else.”

Johnson and Brawner-Henley, whose basket from half-court gave the women a thrilling victory in the skills competition at Fan Fest, are among the most talented players in NCAA Division II. Johnson averaged 18.2 points and shot .402 from 3-point range and .860 from the free-throw line last season. Brawner-Henley averaged 17.6 points and 12.6 rebounds while shooting .523 from the floor.

However, as Gillespie said, “they also are the hardest workers. They make my job easy. You don’t get to coach players like this very often.”

Yet as important as those two will be to the Flyers’ success, Gillespie added, “We have a lot of women who are talented, but there will be a learning curve. Three to 14 on our roster are good, just not experienced. We will rely on young players.”

Brawner-Henley, a 6-foot senior forward, said she has a feeling it’s all going to work out.

“I am very optimistic about it,” she said. “Some people will have to learn a new system and step up to the plate,

but we’re still going to be good.

We’re going to know how to play good defense, and that will be huge.”

A force inside throughout her Lewis career, Brawner-Henley said there could be a change in her game this season.

“I’ll probably shoot more jump shots,” she said. “I’m getting more confidence shooting it.”

Johnson, in contrast, needs no confidence boost with her shot from anywhere on the floor. The 5-8 senior guard can fill it up.

“This is going to be a fun year,” she said. “We will still be uptempo like we were before, and we will still be fun

to watch. We have an exciting new group coming in and they have to get used to a new staff.

But we have a lot of people who are ready to step up. They’re willing to do whatever it takes.

“That’s why a night like this is important. The fans get to see the new faces and get to see the people they will be cheering for during the season.”

The new faces include freshman guard Alyssa Jurges, a Providence graduate.

“We’re trying to push the girls hard but give them patterns, too,” Gillespie said.

“We won’t be walking the ball down the floor by any means.”

This is Gillespie’s 15th season in coaching. The past four

years she was at Benedictine.

She says she is exactly where she wants to be.

“This is by far the greatest place in the country for me to coach,” she said.

Judging from the enthusiasm at Fan Fest, the Lewis student body can’t wait to watch Johnson, Brawner-Henley and the rest of the Flyers do their thing.

Lewis plays exhibition games Wednesday at Loyola and Saturday at DePaul before tipping off the regular season. Those who come out this season to see the Flyers will notice a twist in the women’s game – four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves.

Royals win World Series with late rally

Eric Hosmer wouldn’t wait any longer.

A daring dash by Hosmer tied the score in the ninth, and those bound-and-determined Kansas City Royals rallied yet again to beat the New York Mets, 7-2, in 12 innings early Monday for their first championship since 1985.

One agonizing win from ecstasy last year, this time the Royals reign after their latest incredible comeback and a goahead hit in Game 5 from Christian Colon, maybe the most unlikely player in uniform.

So go ahead and crown ’em, Kansas City! The job is finally done.

A better quality life Joliet hospital offers new treatment for controlling severe asthma

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Living with severe asthma has been likened to trying to go about daily activities while breathing through a narrow paper straw. The condition can be incapacitating at times, deadly at others.

Debbie Durham of Plainfield knows only too well what it’s like to go through life with asthma.

“Sometimes, it’s difficult for me to walk even 4 feet,’ ” Durham said. “I get so winded, even singing in the church choir.”

But now, Durham’s pulmonologist Dr. Phillip Leung is recommending she undergo a new procedure designed to greatly reduce asthma in those who have severe cases.

Durham is on the waiting list to receive it and is just waiting for insurance issues to clear up.

Pulmonologists at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center are the first in the area to begin using bronchial thermoplasty to give relief to the most severe cases of asthma sufferers. The procedure uses radiofrequency thermal energy to permanently reduce the smooth muscle mass in the airways of the lungs and has been shown to make breathing significantly easier for those patients.

“This is revolutionary,” said Dr. Diane Doeing, a Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center pulmonologist. “It’s the first procedural-based therapy ever used for asthma.”

Doeing stressed the procedure won’t cure asthma, as there is no cure for it. But it does help control asthma.

“These patients will require less hospitalization and

have a better quality of life,” Doeing said. “It’s all about living a better quality of life.”

For Durham, many things can trigger an asthma attack.

She’ll feel the tightening in her chest begin when she vacuums, uses cleaning products, Dr. Diane comes down Doeing with a cold virus, goes out on a windy day and breathes in cold air.

She lost a job because her desk was under an air conditioning vent, and the cold air set off her asthma. A change in seasons, especially going from spring to summer, particularly perturbs her sensitive lungs.

Durham was diagnosed with asthma when she was just a baby, but she said it only became apparent about 15 years ago, when she was 37.

“I was so sick and coughing and couldn’t catch my breath,” Durham said. “I didn’t think it was asthma.

The doctor asked if I was using my inhaler, and I said, ‘Doctor, I don’t have asthma.’

She said what I had just experienced was an asthma attack.”

Durham was placed on steroids almost immediately, which helped, but also caused her to gain 100 pounds in just six months. She also takes other medication, uses inhalers and takes breathing treatments.

For a time, Durham also received regularly scheduled injections at the hospital but had to discontinue them after developing an allergic reaction.

“I’m always in the hospital from asthma,” Durham said.

A bridge player who must discard losers has to be realistic and hunt for a lie of the cards that will allow him to succeed. In this deal, for example, South leaps into six spades. West leads the club jack: queen, king, ace (or seven, five, ace). How should declarer continue?

North, who was close to a threespade raise over one spade, assumed South’s three-club rebid was a helpsuit game-try. With a maximum and four-card spade support, North happily jumped to game. Then South bid what he hoped he could make.

If spades are 2-2, there isn’t a problem; if they are 4-0, the contract is hopeless; but what about 3-1? Then South will have to discard all three of his club losers before the defender with the long trump can ruff in. This requires finding that player with four hearts.

Declarer should cash his trump ace at trick two, then play a spade to dummy’s king.

When East turns up with the trump trick, South should lead a heart to his nine. (If East has four hearts and West two, East is twice as likely to hold the jack.) When the finesse wins, declarer cashes his heart ace, plays a diamond to dummy’s king, and discards his three clubs on the three high hearts.

East ruffs the last heart, but it is too late.

Similarly, note that if West starts with three trumps, South should finesse dummy’s heart 10 on the second round of the suit.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can help change the way you think about and respond to tinnitus – to make you so accustomed to the sound that you notice it less.

Another approach involves devices worn like hearing aids that generate low-level white noise. These can reduce the perception of tinnitus and sometimes make it less noticeable for a short time after the device is turned off.

Various medicines also appear to improve the symptoms. These include an anti-inflammatory medicine called dexamethasone.

This medicine is injected into the middle ear, through your eardrum.

A second medicine that helps the ringing in the ears become less bothersome is an anti-anxiety drug called alprazolam.

A third medicine is called misoprostol. It works on a particular kind of body inflammation. Interestingly, it also has other uses that are completely unrelated to ringing in the ears, such as to protect against and treat stomach ulcers.

In specialized treatment centers for tinnitus, several of these techniques may be used. It often is a process of trial and error: it’s hard to predict which approaches will be most effective for any individual.

Although on rare occasions, tinnitus is an early sign of a more serious ear disorder, usually it comes and goes, and never leads to a loss of hearing. I think it is likely you will be able to get relief from the condition, and very likely that it will never lead to something worse.

constant ringing or buzzing sound in my ears. It’s been going on for months. What can I do? It’s driving me crazy.

Dear Reader: You probably have a condition called tinnitus. It’s pretty common. Many of my patients have it. Occasionally, I have it. It doesn’t usually affect your hearing. But it can be really annoying and distracting, enough so that it affects people’s level of function. It’s as hard to concentrate when there’s a sound inside your head as when there’s a jackhammer outside your window.

Tinnitus can occur in one or both ears. People describe the sound of their tinnitus differently. Like you, some say that is a “ringing” or “buzzing.”

Others use words like whistling, chirping, hissing, humming, roaring or even shrieking.

Tinnitus sometimes occurs temporarily after being exposed to very loud sounds. My first brief memory of having tinnitus was following a rock concert.

What made it worse was that the concert was very disappointing.

Some medications can cause tinnitus, too. For example, high doses of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications can cause it. But in cases like this, the ringing or other noise usually goes away when you stop taking the medication.

There are several ways to help tune out the noise and minimize its impact.

One is called tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT).

This is offered at specialized centers for tinnitus treatment. The relatively few studies of this treatment report high success rates.

Another treatment is biofeedback. This treatment monitors a person’s degree of physical stress, and teaches relaxation to relieve

Dear Abby: My friendships have always included people of different races, religions, nationalities, sexual orientations, professions, etc.

A few years ago, I had an experience that was both devastating and humbling on several different levels.

It caused me to do a lot of introspection and self-improvement, which led to my becoming a more empathetic person.

Over the last few years, I have distanced myself from old friends and acquaintances who were racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.

I have replaced them with new relationships with people who embrace diversity.

Some of the people I no longer see ask me why we don’t talk or get together anymore.

I don’t want to give them excuses like, “I’ve been too busy.” How do I explain to them that I don’t enjoy associating with people who hold bigoted views? – Open-Minded in
