JOLIET – Police will end the busiest travel day of the year with a roadside safety check.

Police will be stationed from 9 p.m.

Wednesday to 2 a.m. Thursday on Route 59 near Theodore Street to check for safety issues and, of course, drunk driving.

“The night before Thanksgiving is a big ‘bar night’ and we want to make sure no one’s driving who shouldn’t be,” Sgt. Phillip Stice said.

The safety check is funded through a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“If you have a valid license and insurance, don’t smell of alcohol and there’s nothing wrong with your car, you’ll be inconvenienced for a couple of minutes,” Stice said.

But Stice said officers will ticket drivers texting or talking on cellphones or who have seat belt or child restraint violations. Since Oct. 1, checkpoints have been set up each weekend in different locations throughout the city. Other checkpoints will be set up for the weekends of Christmas and New Year’s.

“The Joliet Police Department urges everyone to celebrate the holidays in a safe, responsible manner. Never drink and drive and remember to buckle your seat belt,” Police Chief Brian Benton said.

Stice said several roadside checkpoints have discovered drivers who were wanted on outstanding warrants or had drugs in the vehicle.

“To make it fair and random, each [checkpoint] starts with every third vehicle being checked,” Stice said. “Though the supervising officer will adjust it for

every other vehicle if there’s less traffic throughout the night.”

Passing drivers may be asked to take breathalyzer or field sobriety tests.

IDOT has funded roadside safety checkpoints on holiday weekends and the Super Bowl in Joliet for several years.

In October, police also obtained a Local Alcohol Program Enforcement Grant, which pays for up to two checkpoints on non-holiday weekends. Joliet police also used that grant to replace equipment, including 18-inch orange traffic cones.

The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists reports Joliet police made 113 DUI arrests in 2013.

The Secretary of State’s Office reports drunk driving fatalities have decreased in Illinois over the last 10 years. In 2012, the most recent statistics available, there were 335 deaths – one-third of all traffic fatalities.

Gas prices to aid holiday travelers

During this Thanksgiving weekend, 46.3 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home, according to AAA Travel. The average traveler takes a 549-mile roundtrip.

AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher said travel trend research includes surveys in each state, looking at the job market, the housing market, airfare and hotel costs and, of course, gas prices.

“Lower gas prices are currently saving consumers $215 million a day, which is going back into disposable income the family can use to travel,” Mosher said. Ninety percent of travelers between Wednesday

and Sunday will drive.

Wednesday remains the nation’s busiest travel day.

This weekend likely will see the most travelers since 2007, according to the AAA report.

Illinois is expected to have 2.4 million travelers with 182,000 people traveling by air, a 5 percent increase over last year.

AAA reports Thanksgiving gas prices will be the lowest in five years. On Tuesday, the average cost of a gallon of regular gas was $2.89 statewide and $3.02 in the Chicago metro area.

In Joliet, Delta Sonic, 1812 W. Jefferson St., and Clark, 212 S. Larkin Ave., had the lowest gas prices at $2.75 for a gallon of regular.

Local weather is expected to be cloudy for the next few days, with snow showers pre-

dicted for Friday morning.

Mosher said a snowstorm is predicted to affect the East Coast, which can cause travel delays at Illinois airports.

“We recommend people try to get to the airport as early as possible and plan to take everything they need for at least one night in their carry-on,” she said.

Airfare costs are 1 percent higher than last year, hotel costs are 8 percent higher and car rental prices have increased 10 percent, according to the AAA report.

Travelers are expected to spend an average of $573 over the course of their holiday travels, the report said, with 31 percent of their travel budget being spent on fuel, 22 percent on food and 20 percent on shopping.

Court documents allege Majka treated a mastiff dog cruelly between Nov. 7 and Nov. 15.

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office was called Thursday to Pine Bluff Animal Hospital in Morris by an Animal Control officer, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Tuesday. A report was filed over wounds a dog had received.

In its investigation, the sheriff’s office discovered Majka was the dog’s owner.

According to judici.com, an Animal Control officer testified in court Friday and then a warrant was issued for Majka’s arrest.

Majka posted bond after his arrest. He was given a court date of 9:30 a.m. Dec. 15.

Local businesses ask shoppers to remember them this holiday season

he Wal-Marts, Best Buys and other “big box” retailers have a field day during the wee hours after Thanksgiving.

The heavily slashed prices on items, from TVs to toys, during Black Friday – named for the day retailers often go into the black fiscally for the year – leads to lines outside the stores hours, if not days, before they open. But that shopping interest rarely extends to local small businesses, owners say.

“Black Friday is not our day,” said Victoria Brewton, owner of Main Street Candy and Toys, 24036 W. Lockport St. in Plainfield.

However, since 2010, a new initiative – Small Business Saturday, held the Saturday after Thanksgiving and marketed by American Express – has emerged, highlighting local businesses.

In 2013, American Express estimated that $5.7 billion was spent during Small Business Saturday, a 3.6 percent increase from 2012.

Small Business Saturday falls on Nov. 29 this year.

American Express is offering its cardholders a three-time deal of getting back $10 for $10 (up to $30) spent at participating local small businesses.

also generally promotes the day as a reminder to shop locally. But several small-business owners in Will County see the initiative as much more than a good deal.

Customer appreciation

Mokena business owner Kim McAuliffe sees some customers come in her store just for Small Business Saturday.

“They come in just to say, ‘I’m here because of Small Business Saturday and I want to support your store,’” McAuliffe said.

McAuliffe runs An English Garden Flowers and Gifts at 11210 Front St. She has participated in Small Business Saturday for the past three years.

One of those customers, Pauline Jones, lives in Cissna Park, but travels to Will County often and stops at An English Garden before heading back to Iroquois County.

“I prefer shopping at smaller businesses because they are more helpful to you and they get to know you as a person,” Jones said. “If I can help the little guy, then great.”

“People might forget about the smallest shops during that time of year,” McAuliffe said.

“I think it brings to people’s minds that, hey, there are those smaller businesses out there too.”

Plainfield Candlelight Christmas

Anna Trost, the owner of Wine and Cheese restaurant in Plainfield, said Small Business Saturday is a big day for the local businesses that line Lockport Street in downtown Plainfield because it’s advertised with a Candlelight Christmas celebration, hosted by the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce on the same night.

Candlelight Christmas is a village-wide collaborative program, including events at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA, Plainfield Public Library and several small businesses downtown.

“We try to organize it so small businesses can thrive downtown,” said Vitella Barnes, an assistant with the Plainfield chamber.

“People make a concerted effort to come that day,” Trost said. “It takes the focus away from bigger box stores and puts it back on the local, community-oriented stores.”

Trost said Wine and Cheese, 24104 W. Lockport St., is offering a complimentary wine tasting from 6 to 9 p.m. during Candlelight Christmas.

While Main Street Candy and Toys doesn’t have many specific items on sale, Brewton said it will offer other promotions, such as raffles and coupons in circulation.

“We have a significant spike in sales during the Saturday,” Brewton said. “But it’s really, really important that if we want a thriving main street, we have to have a partnership with the community.”

That partnership, a relationship with the community, has come through events such as the summer Cruise Nights and the Candlelight Christmas.

Union leader: No teacher contract soon Related

By SANDY ILLIAN BOSCH Shaw Media correspondent PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield teachers’ contract is not likely to be settled soon, the union president said this week.

Teachers continued to show their resolve with a demonstration on a blustery Monday evening outside of the Plainfield School District 202 administrative building as the school board arrived.

At that meeting, the board approved 2 percent pay increases for nonunion employees.

Two more contract negotiation sessions are scheduled for Dec. 4 and 10.

But during the demonstration Monday, Union President Dawn Bullock said it will be at least a couple of months before a deal is even possible because of a proposal to expand the foreign language curriculum.

The administration’s desire to add foreign language to the middle school curriculum requires “a whole new schedule,” Bullock said. She said a proposed schedule won’t be ready until at least mid-January, and without a schedule, the teachers cannot vote on a new deal.

A school district spokesman declined to comment on details of contract negotiations.

With more than an hour left to stand out in the frigid weather before coming inside for the meeting, the chant turned

to “Show you care, do what’s fair.”

What is fair, according to Plainfield Central High School science teacher Debbie Pohlmann, is a workload that doesn’t require teachers to work into the evening.

“People joke about us living at school,” Pohlmann said, but added that it isn’t far from the truth.

“When I leave there at 7 at night, I’m not the only one there,” she said.

“There’s nothing to say,” Hernandez said. “Nothing has changed. With all due respect, we’re not going to negotiate in the newspaper. Negotiations continue.”

Hernandez said the demonstration showed that teachers are “exercising their right to do that, and that’s perfectly fine.”

Noting that teachers spoke during the public comment session of the meeting but were not disruptive, Hernandez said, “To everybody’s credit, there’s no obvious animosity.”

While the school board did not address the contract negotiations at the meeting, it did act on a related matter.

The board approved 2 percent pay increases for about 175 nonunion administrators and support staff. The raises are for the 2014-15 school year and are retroactive to the start of the year.

Another 985 support staff employees are union workers, and they have not yet begun their contract negotiations.

The support staff union’s contract expires June 30.

There are 1,853 union teachers in the district.

programs such as Common Core and a lack of retirement incentives remain “strong sticking points” between the administration and the teachers union, which began negotiations a year ago toward a new contract, Bullock said. Teachers at the district’s 30 elementary, middle and high schools have worked without a contract since the beginning of the school year.

Union members also continue to complain about too much standardized testing. Some held signs Monday that read “75% tester, 25% teacher.”

“This isn’t just about a contract. It’s about the students,” Bullock said.

On Oct. 22, teachers rejected a tentative contract that was agreed upon by negotiating teams on both sides.

Asked whether these negotiations could lead to a repeat of the 2002 teacher strike, Bullock said she hopes it doesn’t come to that.

“But you never know,” she said.

Joliet Park District Board approves tax levy increase

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Park District board this week approved a property tax levy, which is expected to add about $2.50 annually to the property taxes on a house valued at $100,000.

The levy increase is in addition to the property tax hike that will come with $19.5 million in bonds approved overwhelmingly by voters on Nov.

4. But the total effect of that referendum tax increase is not expected to be felt next year, when the new levy is applied to the next tax bills.

“It won’t be the full impact,” said Matt Pehle, director of finances for the park district.

“All $20 million [in bonds] won’t be issued at once.”

The district expects to begin issuing bonds approved by the referendum in February.

The total impact of the tax referendum has been estimated

at about $20 per every $100,000 of assessed property value.

Joliet Park District Executive Director Dominic Egizio said the 3 percent increase approved Monday by the Park Board is typical of levy increases in recent years. The increased revenue will cover higher expenses, including employee costs and utility bills.

“Nothing new,” Egizio said.

“It’s all increased expenses.”

The property tax levy approved Monday was $5.2 mil-

lion. That, combined with a separate levy for nonreferendum bonds and interest, will bring the total park district levy to $7.2 million.

That compares to a total levy of just under $7 million for the last tax bill.

The Joliet Park District sought voter approval for the tax referendum, saying the district needed money beyond its usual resources to take on new projects and make needed repairs to facilities.

The referendum passed with 70 percent of the vote, unusually strong backing for a tax increase. But the park district first surveyed residents to gauge potential support before putting the referendum on the ballot.

Projects to be funded through the future bond issues include a Nowell Park community center, an Inwood indoor training facility, Pilcher Park infrastructure work and renovations throughout the district.

New Lenox mayor picks Chamber CEO to fill vacant board position Will serve out rest of Tuminello term

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Mayor Tim Baldermann welcomed a new and younger voice to the New Lenox Village Board on Monday.

Baldermann chose Emily Johnson, chief executive officer of the New Lenox Chamber of Commerce, to join the board.

She will replace Ray Tuminello, who resigned Monday. The Village Board unanimously approved the appointment.

Tuminello planned to resign when he was chosen by Will County Republicans to replace outgoing County Board Member Margo McDermed. He had been on the Village Board since 2005.

With Johnson, Baldermann said, the Village Board

will now have a trustee with a strong connection to the business community. It also will have someone who’s a young resident of New Lenox. She has lived in the area with her family for three years.

“We got some youth and a newer perspective,” he said.

Johnson said she was honored and excited about the opportunity.

“I’m really looking forward to working with them and I think it’s a dynamic group of people,” she said.

Johnson said she got to know village officials well through her work with the New Lenox Chamber of Commerce. She said she plans to bring a fresh perspective to village issues. She also plans to continue serving as the Chamber’s CEO. Johnson will serve as a temporary trustee until the April elections, when voters will have a chance to choose a trustee for a two-year term.

Baldermann said she intends to run at that time.

Johnson said she wants to run because she’s grown to respect the village and its residents and New Lenox is where she plans to raise her family.

“I’m very passionate about New Lenox,” she said.

Lincoln Station Apartments

One issue in store for Johnson – and other village trustees – will be the development of the Lincoln Station Apartments. At an October Village Board meeting, trustees were critical of the plan for the development because of traffic issues and planned building materials.

Baldermann said Tuesday the developers, New Lenox Development Company LLC, will return for a village work session in January to tweak their plans. He said the developers wanted to conduct a traffic study and examine building materials further.

Amount schools are likely to receive is much lower, though THE HERALD–NEWS PLAINFIELD – Plainfield School District 202 is seeking a 19 percent levy increase, although school officials say in reality they can only get a fraction of that.

The school board will hold a public hearing on the levy at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the administrative center, 15732 Howard

St. in Plainfield.

School officials put out a news release Tuesday saying they only expect to get a 1.5 percent increase in the levy.

District spokesman Tom Hernandez said the 19 percent increase is a “balloon levy” designed to capture as much of the increased property value in the school district as possible.

But since a state-imposed tax cap limits how much school districts can increase taxes, school officials estimate they will get a 1.5 percent increase once that cap is imposed.

The school board expects

to vote on the tax levy during the same Dec. 15 meeting at which the public hearing will be held.

The proposed levy is just under $174 million.

School officials said in the news release that 79 percent of the levy, or $162 million, would be used to fund operations, including salaries, maintenance and transportation.

The levy sets the total amount of property taxes that a local government can get.

It is not the sole factor in determining property tax bills.

Individual bills vary based on the assessed value of property.

Holidays are great, but parents should take precautions so their children can enjoy a healthy and happy season.

“Little kids are always crawling around, putting anything they find in their mouths,” said Dr. Anuja Maini, a pediatrician at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, in Joliet.

“Christmas tree lights present a possibility of electrical shock and burns,” explained Maini, who also advises “If you’re buying an artificial tree, make sure it’s fire resistant. Keep fresh trees away from radiators and fireplaces. Keep little ones away from the fireplace. “A lot of people burn their wrapping paper in the fireplace. That’s a big no-no. It can cause intense burning. And hang glass ornaments higher on the tree where toddlers can’t reach them.”

When children play outdoors, unplug electric decorations. Fight colds, flu and hypothermia by keeping kids

covered with a coat, hat, gloves and shoes or boots that will keep their feet dry.

When skiing, sledding and skating, make sure kids are under proper guidance, Maini advised. “Otherwise they can get twists and sprains and fractures.”

“Don’t drag sick children to parties. Find a babysitter,” Maini said. “If your kids are sick keep them away from gatherings because they can spread infection.”

Prevent stomach infections by making sure party food doesn’t sit out for more than two hours.

Routine is important, especially for one- and two-yearolds, said Maini.

“I see kids who are fussier because parents are traveling, they’re in somebody else’s house, they’re out of their routine, they’re up at night and not sleeping well,” she said.

“Keeping little ones napping and on a schedule can help parents reduce stress and enjoy the holidays.”

Clean Line gets Ill. OK Approval still needed in Iowa for project that includes Grundy County

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – After two years of waiting, the Illinois Commerce Commission approved Tuesday the Rock Island Clean Line project to construct its energy transmission line in Illinois.

On Nov. 13, the ICC put off voting on the project until Tuesday. The approval allows Rock Island Clean Line to construct and operate an electric transmission line. The company applied in October 2012.

“Although the transmission line is the first ‘merchant’ project, or self-financed proj-

ect, approved by the ICC, the Commission found the project has the potential to bring substantial benefits to Illinois ratepayers,” according to a news release from the ICC. The full ruling was not immediately available Tuesday.

Rock Island Clean Line has proposed constructing a $300 million converter station in Grundy County. The station would be the end point for a 500-mile direct current energy transmission line that would cut through numerous Illinois and Iowa farms, including some within Grundy County.

The line would pipe wind energy from Iowa to Grundy County, where it could be con-

verted into alternate current electricity and injected into the power grid, serving Chicago and the East Coast.

Clean Line will recover the costs of construction, operation and maintenance solely from revenue from transmission customers who purchase capacity on the system rather than through a traditional cost of service approach, according to the ICC’s news release.

The ICC order ensures Clean Line secures funds that cover total project costs before constructing facilities, according to the ICC news release. It also prohibits expanding the project without ICC approval.

The company also has agreements with area schools.

The Grundy Economic Development Council has been a proponent of the project and the economic benefits the $2 billion project could bring.

Nancy Norton Ammer, CEO of the council, did not immediately return calls Tuesday.

The next big step for the transmission line is to get approval in Iowa. Clean Line put in its application in Iowa earlier this month and does not expect a decision for about a year, Kurt said.

If it receives approval in 2015, Clean Line hopes to begin construction in 2016 and be operational by 2018, she said.

manager of Clean Line Energy Partners, on Tuesday. The company is seeking voluntary easements with the owners of more than 500 parcels of land in Illinois.

Numerous Grundy County farmers have spoken against the project, noting they fear the company may use eminent domain to obtain their land if they do not reach voluntary agreements. The concerns made publicly involve the loss of prime farmland.

According to the ICC news release, Clean Line has to address landowners’ concerns, including potential impacts from the construction of the line on irrigation operations, soil compaction, soil erosion, wetland areas and timber land.

A group that calls itself “Block Rock Island Clean Line” stated in a news release that it’s unclear whether landowners have the right to say no to Clean Line without the threat of eminent domain.

Group co-founder Mary Mauch said in the news release that in order for the company to use eminent domain, it would have to prove need.

“This is a significant issue, as [Clean Line] would have to go back to the ICC in a new petition in which their failure to prove ‘need’ could be a deciding factor in whether or not [Clean Line] would have the right of eminent domain,” Mauch said.

Kurt said Clean Line did not apply for eminent domain authority, so the ICC’s order did not address it.

Grundy County Board Chairman Ron Severson said he doesn’t believe the project can move forward without eminent domain.

“They’re going to have to have eminent domain, and I don’t think they will get it.

There is no way they can cross 500 miles without it,” he said.

“Personally, I’m not in favor of this project,” Severson said.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEWPORT, R.I. – The International Tennis Hall of Fame says Dorothy “Dodo” Cheney, a member of the Hall and the first American woman to win the tournament now known as the Australian Open, has died at age 98.

The Hall announced Tuesday that Cheney died Sunday in Escondido, California, following a brief illness.

She was inducted in 2004, and was introduced at the ceremony by fellow member John McEnroe. In addition to her

1938 singles title at the Australian Championships, Cheney reached the semifinals at least once at each of the other three Grand Slam tournaments and was ranked in the top 10 in the 1930s and 1940s.

According to the U.S. Tennis Association, Cheney won nearly 400 USTA national titles across various age groups.

“Dodo Cheney was one of the most prolific champions in the history of tennis and the personification of tennis truly being a lifetime sport,” USTA Chairman Dave Haggerty said in a statement.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS OMAHA, Neb. – Dr. Denham Harman, a renowned scientist who developed a prominent theory on aging that’s now used to study cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and other illnesses, has died in Nebraska at age 98.

Harman, who worked into his mid-90s at the hospital in Omaha after a brief illness, medical center spokesman Tom O’Connor said.

Harman developed the “Free Radical Theory of Aging” in 1954, Denham t h o u g h i t Harman took years for additional research to prove its importance. The theory holds that one of the byproducts of oxygen utilization is adverse chemical reactions in cells, which results in aging and, ultimately, death.

The medical community initially scoffed at the theory proposed by Harman, who also contributed to nearly three dozen patents between earning his doctorate in chemistry at the University of California in Berkeley in 1943 and his medical degree from Stanford in 1954. But by the 1980s, free radicals had become part of research into cancer, cardiovascular disease and strokes. They have since been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Harvard Medical School professor David Sinclair said Harman’s research inspired thousands of young scientists, including himself, to work on aging research.

“Dr. Harman is one of the most influential scientists of the past 50 years, bringing world-class science to what was once a backwater of biology,” Sinclair said.

Harman believed the aging process could be slowed by reducing the production of free radicals with a healthy diet, regular exercise and taking vitamins.

2 credit houses not taking any major action on Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – Two major credit houses aren’t overly worried about an Illinois judge tossing out a pension overhaul designed to close a $100 billion deficit, but neither is thrilled with the state’s financial condition.

Fitch Ratings issued a statement Tuesday saying the decree by Sangamon County Circuit Judge John Belz “does not raise a new credit concern” because the agency had not factored in the savings lawmakers projected from the law they adopted in December 2013.

A day earlier, Moody’s Investors Service stated that it had issued a “credit negative” rating on Illinois as a result of last Friday’s court opinion. That is a warning that further problems would result in another credit downgrade for Illinois – which already is at the lowest level of any state.

Although Fitch took no action as a result of Belz’s action – which the state attorney general has pledged to appeal the state Supreme Court – the agency said it’s worried about the January expiration of a temporary income tax increase imposed by Gov. Pat Quinn.

Illinois suspends Ebola hotline as interest fades

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois health officials have suspended a telephone hotline about the Ebola virus because the number of calls to it has fallen sharply.

Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold said Tuesday that any-

one with questions about Ebola can contact their local health department or the state health department’s communicable disease staff.

The hotline started in mid-October as public interest grew following the death in Dallas of the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States.

It was staffed 24 hours a day and received hundreds of calls during its first week. There have been no Ebola cases in Illinois.

Farmers winding down harvest

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois farmers are winding down the harvest, with 97 percent of the state’s corn crop having been brought in as of last week.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued its final weekly crop update of the year.

It says some producers continued with fall tilling and fertilizer applications for the week that ended Sunday. But, it adds, freezing temperatures may have put an end to fieldwork for the season.

The amount of the state’s corn that’s been harvested is 5 percentage points above the five-year average but a percentage point below last year.

That’s a big comeback for growers, who got off to a slow start this fall after frequent rain left fields too muddy to harvest.

Seventy-six percent of the state’s winter wheat has emerged from the ground.

Judge: Don’t rip up Lucas Museum site overnight

CHICAGO – A federal judge has ordered the city not to

alter the site of the proposed George Lucas Museum until it receives a court order. Friends of the Park filed a lawsuit this month asking the judge to stop construction on two parking lots south of Soldier Field.

U.S. District Judge John Darrah asked city lawyers Tuesday to guarantee they wouldn’t rip into the land – the way Mayor Richard M. Daley did during the night when he replaced the former lakefront airport Meigs Field. Lawyers would not offer solid guarantees.

Critics say they’re not opposed to the filmmaker’s stateof-the-art museum, but to its location along Lake Michigan.

The lawsuit claims the land is former lake area, was filled in and is owned by the state of Illinois.

Brown family blasts prosecutor; Wilson offers first public remarks

By TOM FOREMAN JR. and JIM SALTER The Associated Press FERGUSON, Mo. – Attorneys for Michael Brown’s family vowed Tuesday to push for federal charges against the police officer who killed the unarmed 18-yearold, while the officer insisted in his first public statements that he could not have done anything differently in the confrontation.

As darkness fell, hundreds more National Guardsmen were ordered into Ferguson in hopes that their presence would help local law enforcement keep order in the St. Louis suburb.

During an interview with ABC News, officer Darren Wilson said he has a clean conscience because “I know I did my job right.”

Wilson, who has been on leave since the Aug. 9 shooting, had been with the Ferguson police force for less than three years. He told ABC that Brown’s shooting marked the first time he had fired his gun.

The Brown family attorneys said the grand jury process was rigged from the start

to clear the white officer, Wilson, in the Aug. 9 shooting death of Brown, who was black. They criticized everything from the evidence the St. Louis County prosecutor presented to the jury to the way it was presented, as well as the timing of the announcement of the grand jury’s final decision.

“We said from the very beginning that the decision of this grand jury was going to be the direct reflection of the presentation of the evidence by the prosecutor’s office,” attorney Anthony Gray said.

He suggested the county’s top prosecutor, Bob McCulloch, presented some testimony to discredit the process, including from witnesses who did not see the shooting.

They hope a federal civil rights investigation results in charges against Wilson.

Twelve commercial buildings in Ferguson burned down during protests that erupted after the grand jury’s decision was announced, and firefighters responded to blazes at eight others, fire officials said. Other businesses were looted, and 12 vehicles were torched.

By Tuesday afternoon,

several businesses along West Florissant Avenue, scene of many of the most intense clashes, already were closed.

Natalie DuBose, owner of Natalie’s Cakes and More, planned to spend Tuesday night at her business, which is only about a block from the Ferguson Police Department.

“I have to be here because I have orders that I have to complete for tomorrow and for Thursday because of the holiday. I just couldn’t do it today because of the cleanup.”

A window at her business was busted out in Monday night’s turmoil.

“I’m emotional because of what has happened to me,” she said. “This is my livelihood. This is the only source of income I have to raise my children.”

In the aftermath of Monday night, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon more than tripled the number of National Guard troops in Ferguson, ordering the initial force of 700 to be increased to 2,200.

“Lives and property must be protected,” Nixon said.

“This community deserves to have peace.”

CHICAGO – Taking on the hecklers who’ve been interrupting his speeches lately, President Barack Obama argued back Tuesday with a point-by-point rebuttal of their arguments and suggested they “get the facts.”

Obama had traveled home to Chicago for an appearance aimed at broadening the appeal of his recent executive actions on immigration beyond the predominantly Latino population that lobbied heavily for relief. He visited a community center in a predominantly Polish-American neighborhood.

About midway through his remarks, three protesters strategically placed around the auditorium rose and began criticizing his deportation policy, saying he hasn’t been deporting just criminals. “You have been deporting families,” one heckler shouted. A woman among the group of people seated on stage behind Obama stood up and held a sign that

said, “Obama Stop Deportations Now,” with the word “now” in red.

Obama listened. He sympathized. He asked them to stop yelling. Then when it appeared he’d had enough, the former lawyer and former constitutional law professor set about deconstructing their arguments.

“What you’re not paying attention to is the fact that I just took an action to change the law, so that’s point No. 1,” Obama said. “Point No. 2, the way the change in the law works is that we’re reprioritizing how we enforce our immigration laws generally.”

“The point is that though I understand why you might have yelled at me a month ago, although I disagree with some of your characterizations, it doesn’t make much sense to yell at me right now when we’re making changes,” he said as the audience of about 1,800 people applauded.

“But the point is, let’s make sure that you get the facts and that you know exactly what

High court holds our future in its hands REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – A Sangamon County judge just snapped the first buckle on the state’s straight jacket last week.

Despite this, expect Illinois’ leaders to struggle to deal with the state’s crushing pension debt.

Circuit Judge John Belz ruled that a plan championed by House Speaker Mike Madigan and Gov. Pat Quinn was unconstitutional. The measure almost certainly will be next considered by the state Supreme Court.

At issue is whether the state can reduce retirement benefits for future work performed by government workers.

Faced with more than $111 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, Illinois is in the worst fiscal condition of any state.

And Belz’s ruling sets the stage for the crisis to deepen.

While government worker unions were touting the ruling as a victory, it’s actually sowing despair for many current employees and sets the stage for generational warfare.

If the high court upholds this ruling, tax dollars that would go to support schools, prisons and other state services will be diverted to fund pensions.

Look for teachers, prison guards and other state workers to receive pink slips to free up money for increased pension payments. Who else but government workers routinely retire in their 50s, have guaranteed cost-of-living adjustments and pensions guaranteed to grow until the day they die?

Not most of us in the private sector, that’s for sure.

sion, which begins in January.

Don’t be surprised if deep cuts are made in state spending, less money flows to schools, and more government workers head toward the unemployment line.

And things could get worse when summer comes. That’s when the labor contract with the largest state workers union expires.

One should expect Gov.elect Bruce Rauner to demand wage concessions.

It’s simple math.

With more money going to pensions, less will be available for wages and other benefits.

Of course, the state Supreme Court could rule the crisis is so extreme that the state’s emergency powers allow it to reshape pensions on their own.

Just how severe is the crisis? If all of state government were to shut down and its entire operating budget were diverted to fund pensions, Illinois pensions still be would in the hole three years from now.

Now, that’s a crisis.

Will the state Supreme Court see it as a sufficient crisis for the state to exercise its “police power” or “reserved sovereign power” to diminish pension benefits? That’s the $111 billion question.

Gov. Pat Quinn says he is confident they will.

And when the measure was debated before the House of Representatives, Mike Madigan said the same. And that’s what his daughter, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, is arguing. It’s also the position held by the Republican leaders in the General Assembly.

So what will the High Court decide? The future of Illinois depends on it.

And don’t forget about the local restaurants, manned by local residents with a passion for cooking. Joliet also has a growing number of local businesses, from baked goods to fine jewelry.

That definition sums up Lincoln-Way East’s thrilling 60-56 overtime victory against Lincoln-Way Central on Tuesday. In a second-round Pheast of the Phoenix Thanksgiving Tournament boys basketball game at Lincoln-Way North, the Griffins’ 14-point second-half lead evaporated as the game went to overtime.

Behind seniors Jackson Bax and Clint Nooner, however, East persevered and survived.

The game was tied at 49 after regulation. Bax (10 points) went coast-tocoast for a layup to give the Griffins a 51-49 lead to start the overtime. Bax’s jumper put the Griffins up, 54-51, with 3:34 left.

With 13 seconds left and the Griffins up, 56-54, the unflappable senior hit a pair of free throws to increase the Griffins’ lead to 58-54.

“I knew I had to help the team win after we let the 14-point lead get away,” Bax said. “We all came together in the overtime to get a crucial victory after last night’s loss to West.”

“We didn’t rebound well last night, and this was a huge comeback win from yesterday. It’s great to even up our record, and this will give us confidence going forward.”

The Griffins cleaned up their turnover problem from Monday night in the first half, committing only two.

Behind the 3-point marksmanship of junior Jarret Gmazel (14 points, four 3-pointers) the Knights cut the deficit to 39-36 after three quarters. Gmazel hit three long-range bombs to bring the Knights back.

Knights senior Mitch Kwasigroch scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in the fourth quarter. Kwasigroch’s putback basket with 44 second left in regulation tied the game at 49 and sent it into overtime. Kwasigroch had a game-high 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Griffin senior Matt Hayes chipped in with 10 points. Knight senior Luke Newtoff added six points and seven rebounds.

“It would have been very easy to fold after giving up the 14-point lead,” East coach Rich Kolimas said. “They made some defensive adjustments and then started hitting threes on us. I am so proud that we were able to come back and get this win.

“We rode Clint and Jackson, our seniors, to this win. Clint has worked so hard on his game, and it’s exciting to see him have success.”

Lewis earns academic honors: The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) awarded the Flyers men’s and women’s soccer 2013-14 Team Academic Awards. This marks the second consecutive year that the men have received the honor, and Lewis is one of 195 schools in the nation to have both their programs earn the honor.

JOLIET – Considering the troubles it has had against Olivet Nazarene University through the years, the University of St. Francis’ men’s basketball team figured to be in for a real battle when the squads met Tuesday.

After all, both teams came in sporting 5-1 overall records and 1-0 marks in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, sharing the early league lead with Holy Cross.

But the Fighting Saints jumped out to an early lead over the short-handed Tigers, and the tight clash never materialized as USF captured a 75-59 victory at the Sullivan Center.

“I thought that our guys did an excellent job,” USF coach Ryan Marks said. “Olivet is a terrific team, and obviously we caught a little bit of a break with (Aaron) Larson not being able to go. When they have him, they’re probably a legitimate top 10 team in the country.

“But they have a lot of other very good players, and they’re difficult to play against since they’re so disciplined and physical. So being able to have an early lead helped us settle into the game, and we were able to keep our composure when they made some nice runs.”

The Saints (6-1, 2-0) rattled off 10 straight points to grab an early 10-2 advantage over the Tigers (5-2, 1-1) on a pair of buckets from Ilya Ilyayev (18 points, nine rebounds).

Following an 11-2 run, USF built up a commanding 28-11 lead with 6:32 left in the half. Jake Raspopovich (six points, six assists) made two baskets before Jens Kennedy (17 points, five rebounds) completed the spurt with a rebound bucket and a 3-pointer.

After Kennedy made a layup with 5:16 left to make the score 28-11, the Tigers – who were missing the services of top scorer Aaron Larson (21.8 average) – still closed out the half with a 15-8 run to pull to within 36-26 at the break.

PROVIDENCE vs. JCA A high school rivalry built on tradition and respect

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com Perhaps it is because neither has anything to prove.

When Joliet Catholic Academy and Providence Catholic collide on the football field, kids and coaches on both sidelines consider it a mustwin. But the respect most programs must earn already is in place in this rivalry, and both sides know it.

Joliet Catholic has won 13 state football titles and has been to 17 championship games. Providence owns nine titles in 12 trips to championship game – hopefully to make it 10 titles in 13 trips in Saturday’s Class 7A title game. If either ever misses the playoffs, it’s a sign of the Apocalypse.

For two programs in one state to have that sort of success is not unusual. For those schools to be neighbors, about eight miles apart, however, helps create the bond that exists between them.

Players past and present, and die-hard fans in both camps, are unanimous in their feelings. While you might not be particularly fond of the guy lined up across from you on game night, your respect for him never wavers.

Note to readers Providence began its quest for 10 (quest for a 10th state football championship) when it beat Joliet Catholic, 21-10, in a huge season opener. This story on the rivalry between the schools that to this point have combined for 22 state titles appeared recently in Chicago Football magazine.

2013 season opener at Joliet Memorial Stadium. He rushed for 310 yards in 17 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 80, 59, 67 and 32 yards as JCA beat Providence, 42-35. That performance jump-started an all-state caliber season.

“When I went 80 yards on the first play against Providence, I came off the field and saw coach (Dan) Sharp smiling,” Ivlow said. “I said right then that all the hard work paid off.”

Ivlow transferred from Minooka after his sophomore season.

“My first varsity start as a sophomore was against Providence and we lost, 7-0,” he said. “That Providence team was really good. Then my junior year, my first game at JCA, we lost the ESPN game [40-34] to them, which was disappointing.

“Senior year was my favorite high school game of all time. The way that game

builds up, all the hype, it is the ‘Holy War.’ All those questions on Facebook and Twitter. It’s like a college game or a state title game in the season opener. Everyone who plays gets their name out there.”

Ivlow said he has gotten to know several Providence alumni at Saint Xavier.

“They all say their biggest rival is Joliet Catholic,” he said. “There’s always the argument which conference

is better, the East Suburban Catholic or Catholic Blue.

That’s another little battle.

“Our right guard, Frank Markasovic, is from Providence. He’s a captain and just a tremendous kid.”

Saint Xavier coach Mike Feminis, whose Cougars won the 2011 NAIA national championship, attends the JCA-Providence game whenever possible.

“That has to be one of the

best rivalries in the state,” said Feminis, a former NAIA All-America linebacker and assistant coach at University of St. Francis in Joliet.

“Within a few miles of each other, you have two of the best private school programs in the state. It’s a credit to the coaches [Sharp at JCA, Mark Coglianese at Providence] and to coach Seff [Providence

“Maybe the two best allaround players we have had came from those programs, Mike Maher [Providence] and Billy McKeon [JCA]. Every year, there are a minimum of a couple guys and as many as eight or nine in that game that we want in our program.”

“The first time we played them, in the regular season, it was on an ESPN station.

There were about 10,000 people at the stadium. I’ll never forget that one.”

Quigley got his revenge for the two losses, however.

He pitched the regional final the following spring and beat Providence, which was one of the top teams in the state and one of the best in the Celtics’ rich baseball history.

“We got ’em back in baseball,” Quigley said. “I think they had seven or eight D-I players on that team.”

That’s another aspect of the JCA-Providence rivalry. As much as football matters, the rivalry also burns in other sports, with baseball heading the list.

“It’s a great rivalry,” Quig-

ley said. “In football or baseball, watch any of the area Catholic schools and there’s a special rivalry. You hate each other in high school. Then you meet guys later who were from Providence, or Mount Carmel, and you have a special connection.”

Quigley attended Saint Xavier with Providence’s 2002 quarterback, Nick Stanton.

His roommate there was Pete Pignatiello, a former Providence athlete and brother of ex-Celtics pitcher Carmen Pignatiello, who had a cup of coffee with the Cubs.

“Those guys were good people off the field,” Quigley said.

“I really have an appreciation for the Catholic school upbringing and the work ethic at both JCA and Providence.”

Josh Mander, a JCA linebacker when the 2008 team lost the overtime playoff game to Providence, said he got to know the enemy on a different level.

“I roomed freshman year at St. Francis with Pat Wright, before he transferred to Illinois State,” he said.

“He kicked the field goal in overtime that ended my hopes for a second state title. He was a good guy. So was [future Northwestern offensive lineman] Pat Ward.”

ALL ABOUT RESPECT

Despite JCA’s loss to Providence in this season’s opener, Hilltoppers running back Nick Borgra said he would not trade the experience.

“The Providence game is really awesome,” he said. “All

summer, you think Providence. You know you’re going to have your biggest crowd, at least until the playoffs.

“There’s big-time respect between the teams. They’ll hit you and knock you down, and then they help you up. They’re special guys, like we have.”

“It’s the most epic game we play until the playoffs,” JCA linebacker Michael Gruben said. “It’s for bragging rights.

They’re a phenomenal team, especially this year.”

The feeling is mutual.

“They’re a great team from a competitive conference,” Providence outside linebacker Emmet Trost said of JCA. “Playing them sets the tone for the season. There’s a lot of tension in that game, but we have a mutual respect.”

“Coming off last year’s loss to them, beating JCA this year was on our checklist,” said Providence senior quarterback Justin Hunniford, who was overshadowed by Ivlow but enjoyed a record-setting debut as a varsity starter in the 42-35 loss in 2013.

With this season’s 21-10 victory, Providence leads the series 8-3. The first meeting was in the 1989 playoffs, when future Notre Dame and Minnesota Vikings linebacker Pete Bercich tried to play basically on one leg for the Celtics. He went as long as he could. JCA prevailed, 15-0, with a sophomore running back named Mike Alstott – the future Purdue and Tampa Bay Buccaneers standout – making his varsity debut.

The teams also met in playoff games in 2002 and 2008.

The Celtics won the 2002 meeting, 41-0, after they had beaten JCA, 10-2, during that regular season; and Providence won, 24-21, in overtime in 2008. JCA had collected three straight state titles entering the 2002 season and tacked on two more in 2003 and 2004.

“They came out and dominated us,” said JCA’s 2002 quarterback, Ryan Quigley, who went on to pitch in professional baseball. “It humbles you a little bit. We hung our heads after that one. At least it was good to see them go on and win state that year.

Both schools keep traditions going • RIVALRY

Continued from page 27 Joe Rodeghero has seen the success of the two schools up close and personal. He coached in the baseball and football programs at both schools, was head baseball coach at both, and now is a high school football analyst on WJOL Radio in Joliet. His 1994 JCA baseball team won the Class AA state championship, and his 1990 team was the runner-up.

“The proximity of the schools has fueled the rivalry,” Rodeghero said. “The thing I noticed through the years is that there is never animosity between the programs in football or baseball.

“There are lots of great football and baseball schools in the Joliet area. I always felt as a coach that I wanted to help these kids go beyond athletics, and that’s how all the coaches are. The schools don’t give scholarships. I felt I had to try to help parents who have to come up with $40,000 for four years of high school.”

Rodeghero said when he talks with Sharp or Coglianese, he recognizes the admiration both have for the other’s program.

“I admire all the coaches at both schools because they keep their traditions going,” he said. “The character those coaches build in their players is the most important thing.

There are lots of good coaches in this area, but there’s a little more pressure at JCA and Providence because of the reputations those schools have.”

Sharp said hiring Joliet weightlifting guru Francis Ruettiger, a Providence graduate, in 1997 as the Hilltoppers’ strength coach “was the best thing that ever happened to our program.”

JCA players make Rudy’s Gym their second home, and Providence players continue to work out there as well. For three decades, ending a couple of years ago, Rudy’s Gym operated the high school football powerlifting championships in late July that served as the unofficial kickoff to football season in the Joliet area.

“Kids from the two schools work together at the gym and become friends.”

When JCA defensive tackle Matt Mammosser lost his battle with cancer in May 2012, Providence and its football players responded.

“How great Providence was at that difficult time,” Ruettiger said. “That showed right there how great this rivalry is, how great these schools are.”

Ruettiger recently retired from the Joliet Police Department.

“When I started there, we had only three guys who went to Providence. There were maybe 50 guys who went to Joliet Catholic, and there’s more than that now,” he said.

“So when I first got on, I got razzed a lot.”

Jim Boucher is a JCA super fan. He said Casey Colbert, a Providence quarterback from 2002 through 2004, “was hanging out with us in the parking lot before the game this year.

We were doing a lot of teasing back and forth.”

Colbert’s dad, Rick, was former major league pitcher Bill Gullickson’s catcher at Joliet Catholic and played and managed himself in minor league ball.

“There’s a lot of ties between the two schools,” Boucher said. “Look how many guys on both teams go to Rudy’s.

That’s makes the game that much more interesting. Look at how many kids and coaches there are in that game that as a football fan, you just want to

keep following their careers.”

JCA’s run of success in the state playoffs began when the Hilltoppers won four straight titles from 1975 to 1978 under their legend, Gordie Gillespie.

Senffner’s Providence teams won their first in 1987 and tacked on eight more, the last in 2004.

“This all started with the reputation Gordie had, what he had done, and then what Matt Senffner did at Providence,” Sharp said. “Our schools hadn’t been facing each other, but it became a natural rivalry.

“You have coaches from JCA and Providence who were together at St. Francis.

[Providence offensive coordinator] Luke Senffner and [JCA defensive coordinator] Jake Jaworski were close in college at Illinois. You have two great teams and friendships between the staffs that in many cases were there even before we started playing each other.”

“We know what they’ve done and they know what we’ve done,” Coglianese said.

“It’s the traditions.”

The teams will open the 2015 season at Providence. As Celtics athletic director Doug Ternik said, “There’s a huge advantage for each of us to play the other. Here you have two programs committed to doing something great for this area, and yet with the conferences we’re in, it is important to win because we both have to get to five wins.”

Yes, every Providence-JCA game is a must-win. Equally evident, the Holy War is a Respect Bowl.

But none of the drops were great throws, and he missed badly on several other incompletions. He did avoid throwing the ball into dangerous coverages.

With the exception of Martellus Bennett, his receivers were a C- and did nothing to even merit conversation.

Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery both had false start penalties, and Marshall also had a third-down penalty for an illegal block above the waist, which the Bucs declined because they stopped the play anyway.

Bennett had one of his best games of the year blocking the run, and his leaping 26-yard grab of a ball Cutler almost overthrew while escaping the pocket to his right set the Bears up for their first touchdown at Tampa’s 8-yard line. He gets a B. Matt Forte had his usual solid day running the ball but managed only 4.6 yards on five receptions for a B overall.

The offensive line was awful in the first half, serviceable in the second and at best was a C-. Jermon Bushrod in particular seemed to struggle early, while Roberto Garza and Kyle Long picked up the group in the second half.

There is one piece of excellent news on the tape.

Stephen Paea had another

outstanding game. It was an A+ performance that included two sacks and a forced fumble. He competed all game, collapsing the pocket repeatedly, and you’d have to say he’s been the Bears best defensive player.

While Paea was the only lineman to show up in the first half, the whole group stepped up in the second half to take over the game.

Youngsters David Bass and Cornelius Washington contributed splash plays as well.

Give the group a B. Rookie Christian Jones was the most productive of the linebackers with four tackles in 39 snaps; Jonathan Bostic had only one tackle in 61 snaps; and Shea McClellin no tackles in 22 snaps.

As a group, the linebackers were a C and the secondary were slightly worse.

Mundy, Jennings and Kyle Fuller each badly missed tackles, and as a group they allowed Louis Murphy six catches for 113 yards and Vincent Jackson another 117 yards on five catches.

Defensive backs were a C- at best.

Trestman and his coaching staff were a C-, too. The first half was a failure, but the defensive staff did a great job mixing coverages, confusing McCown and taking the game over in the second half.

If this team can’t play better in Detroit and at home versus Dallas, the season could be over very soon.

Well, not the Lions.

Detroit’s front has dominated against the quarterback as well as the ball carrier. The Lions have the NFL’s top run defense, allowing a paltry 3.1 yards a carry. That’s not good news for a Bears team that hasn’t gotten the downfield passing game going all season and has relied so much on Matt Forte.

“They’ve penetrated the offense very well with their D-line, and then their linebackers are extremely aggressive,” offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said Tuesday.

“They’re not big, but they get off blocks and they get edges.

When they decide that you’re running in a certain hole, or their hole that they have to fit, they do a great job of dipping their shoulder and getting under people and getting into the backfield to make the tackle. It’s been rough sledding against them.”

No one has rushed for more than 84 yards against the Lions in a game this season, although LeGarrette Blount did have success for a Patriots team that got out to a big lead last week.

Jay Cutler explained that when the Lions come full-go after the quarterback, they are able to use that aggression to hit the running back.

“They are good against the run. They’re rushing the passer; and if you run the ball along the way, they try to make the play,” he said, adding that

DeAndre Levy leads the Lions with 106 tackles, and he has 10 tackles for loss – as does Ziggy Ansah. Ndamukong Suh has 14 tackles for loss – no Bears player has more than nine tackles behind the line.

“They run to the football.

They’re good at penetrating.

Their second level is good.

They’re playing very well,” coach Marc Trestman said.

“They’re good tacklers. But just their overall physicality – they’re relentless, very well coached, certainly, and talented guys. And they play hard – they’re not just talented, but they play hard, and they play hard every down.”

Last year, Forte ran for only 33 yards against the Lions at Soldier Field, and the Bears’ toss plays to stretch a defense horizontally may not work – the Lions are top three in the league against runs off left end, left tackle and right end.

Mills’ return likely: There was no change in the injury report, which means Jordan Mills would have been a full participant in practice. Assuming he’s all set for Thursday, Mills likely will be back at right tackle, and Kromer confirmed Michael Ola would return to left guard.

Game-time decisions: Without practicing, it’s hard to gauge the Bears’ injury situation. It likely won’t be known the status of Kyle Fuller (knee) or Lance Briggs (groin) until 90 minutes before kickoff. In Detroit, Lions starting left tackle Riley Reiff (knee), defensive tackle Nick Fairley (knee) and offensive guard Larry Warford (knee) did not practice.

You can watch the tape of the Bears’ 21-13 victory over Tampa Bay a dozen times, but you will continue to glean the same results – and it will be unlikely they’ll be what you hoped for going in.

When you break down the tape unit by unit, position by position and player by player, it is almost impossible not to conclude the Bears got a little worse as a football team in the process of winning the game.

At this point, it is almost impossible to determine what type of offense the Bears are striving to be.

In the first half, they ran the ball six times and attempted to throw it 21. In the second half, they ran the ball 20 times and attempted just nine passes.

At no time did they throw or run the ball particularly well.

Defensively, they allowed Tampa – which averages 318 yards of offense a game – to put up 367 yards.

The Bears won because Chris Conte and Ryan Mundy intercepted Josh McCown, and Christian Jones and Tim Jennings recovered fumbles, the last three all coming in the second half.

Whether the takeaways were because of the good play of those Bears or the ineptitude of McCown and the Bucs is in the eye of the beholder.

The offense played by far its worst game under Marc Trestman.

Joliet and Morris dietitians offer tips for better feasting

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Let’s face it: The typical Thanksgiving dinner is too high in calories, refined carbohydrates and fat – especially for the weight conscious and those with diabetes and heart disease.

But, Liz Baker, outpatient dietitian at Morris Hospital, said it’s important to keep the holiday meal in perspective.

“Thanksgiving is one meal out of one day each year,” Baker said. “So while we don’t want to completely splurge and fill up the whole plate, it’s OK to have some of those traditional family recipes we look forward to the whole year.”

What some people will do when anticipating a feast, Baker said, is skip a couple of the preceding meals, assuming that helps even out the calories. Baker doesn’t recommend this practice, since it usually will make the diner ravenous by mealtime, often leading to overeating.

A much better idea is to eat a small breakfast (as well as a small lunch, if dinner is late in the day) and then take modest portions, Baker said. Stepping up one’s exercise routine on the days before and after Thanksgiving helps to quickly burn off those extra calories, she added.

• Take home leftovers so you can enjoy modest portions twice.

• If you eat more carbohydrates than intended, get back on track as soon as possible.

• Choose pumpkin over pecan pie, and shortbread cookies over frosted ones.

• Use low-fat dairy and egg substitutes in baking.

• Choose almonds for a healthy snack.

• Avoid creamed vegetables; choose those that are fresh and steamed. If you must use canned, choose salt-free or rinse away the salt before using.

• Season with low-sodium salt or salt-free seasonings.

• Eat slowly and wait 10 minutes before taking seconds, to see if you’re still hungry.

• Avoid hanging out near the food table to avoid grazing.

In the last 12 months, two bridge magazines have gone from printed editions to email versions. This greatly reduces costs and allows for a much bigger product. For example, the October edition of Bridge Magazine (bridgemagazine.co.uk) ran to 98 pages. And it appears monthly.

This problem was set by Julian Pottage in his “Test Your Defence” column.

Look at the West and North hands.

Against five diamonds, West led the spade king, asking partner to give count. (Against five clubs and higher, it is a good idea to play that an ace lead asks for attitude and a king lead requests count.) When East plays the two, it shows three (an odd number).

So West continues with the spade queen: 10, four, nine. What should West do next?

In the bidding, South’s two-notrump rebid was artificial, showing a weak three-club raise or weak three-diamond rebid.

Three spades was game-forcing, asking South to bid three no-trump with a spade stopper.

East’s second spade play was a suit-preference signal.

With the heart ace, he would have dropped his spade jack. His four showed the club queen. (If East has neither of those honors, the contract is unbeatable.)

If West shifts to, say, a heart, South takes the trick, cashes his diamond ace and queen, plays three rounds of clubs, ruffing the last high in his hand, leads a trump to dummy’s king and runs the clubs to get home.

However, if West continues with his spade ace at trick three, making dummy ruff, South must go down one.

Dear Doctor K: I hear and read so much advice about skin care, and I don’t know what’s true and what’s not. Can you address some common myths about skin care?

Dear Reader: You’re right to be skeptical. My patients often tell me that they’ve heard about a way to keep their skin clear and healthy, and often it is simply not true.

I’ll debunk some of the most common myths I hear: • The right skin cream can keep your skin looking young.

For reducing wrinkles, the treatment with the best evidence behind it is retinoic acid (as in Retin-A) that you apply to your skin. But the best ways to keep wrinkles at bay are using sunscreen and not smoking.

• Antibacterial soap is best for keeping your skin clean.

It’s unnecessary to keep your skin completely free of bacteria, and impossible to accomplish anyway. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently indicated it was considering taking antibacterial soaps off the market. That’s because there is no evidence they clean better than regular soap.

In addition, they may promote bacteria resistant to antibiotics. They may negatively affect body hormones. They may make children more likely to develop allergies. And the antibacterial chemical in most such soaps, triclosan, may have harmful effects on the environment.

• Eating chocolate or oily foods causes oily skin and acne.

There’s no evidence that any specific food causes acne. An oily substance called sebum causes acne. It’s made and secreted by small glands beneath the skin.

• Tanning is always bad for you.

Spending too much

Excessive tanning can also cause skin to wrinkle and age prematurely.

That is not a myth: It’s undeniably true. I spent a lot of time on the beaches of sunny Southern California when I was a kid, only rarely using suntan lotion. And I’ve had many skin cancers as a result -all cured, fortunately.

But developing a light or gradual tan through repeated, but careful, sun exposure isn’t dangerous.

Just take appropriate precautions: Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30, apply it thoroughly and reapply when necessary, and avoid peak sun exposure times (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

• Tanning is good for you.

There’s no evidence that tan people are healthier than paler people. Sun exposure does have a health benefit, though. Sunlight activates vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D helps keep bones strong, and may well have other health benefits. But you can get the vitamin D you need from food and supplements. You don’t need to tan.

• The higher the SPF of your sunscreen, the better.

Above a certain level, a higher sun protection factor (SPF) has little added benefit. Using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is fine.

Keeping your skin healthy is important, no doubt. But beware of these myths, as they will only distract you from your goal.

Dear Abby: I recently found out my daughter has been having an affair with her sister’s husband. This will tear our family apart. It will also have a huge impact on my grandchildren.

I have not yet told my wife, who will be devastated, but I’m having trouble carrying this burden alone.

I feel they should be held accountable. Because you know about it, it’s logical to assume that it’s only a matter of time until others find out what has been going on.

That’s why you should talk to your daughter. Tell her you know about the affair and will now have to inform her sister, who deserves to know that her marriage is in serious trouble and why. If you do, it may save the marriage.

Dear Abby: In the past few months I have gone to different parties for friends from my church group. I always go to the celebrations eager to meet and chat with people I haven’t seen in years.

However, one thing bothers me about these get-togethers. Toward the middle of the event, I often get approached by the host who will ask me to assist with a certain task such as setting up the table, clearing or even doing the dishes. No one else is ever asked to help.

I was raised in a family that emphasized good manners and to always be willing to help a friend. But in these
