ROMEOVILLE – A third suspect has been arrested in connection with a Romeoville robbery that occurred earlier this month during which a 21-year-old woman was tossed from a car.

Kiara E. Thompson, 23, surrendered to Joliet police shortly before 11 a.m. Monday on an outstanding warrant, according to police reports. Thompson has addresses listed in the 4500 block of North Clarendon Avenue in Chicago and the 24300 block of West Renwick

Road in Plainfield.

On Nov. 9, Romeoville officers were called to the 400 block of Hamrick Avenue, where the victim had been struck in the legs by a car.

The victim refused medical treatment.

According to police, the Kiara E. victim met Reta Thompson Shamoun, 18, of the 200 block of Sierra Trail in Romeoville, and they later

According to court records, Jordan is on probation for a May 2013 armed robbery in which he and two other men ambushed a man they believed was bringing marijuana to the 100 block of East Benton Street in Joliet.

The victim was shot in the shoulder but survived.

Shamoun and Thompson are being held in the Will County jail on $100,000 bond.

Will County, state officials urge safe travel on Thanksgiving weekend

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An estimated 2.5 million Illinois travelers are expected to hit the road this Thanksgiving holiday weekend as transportation officials urge safety along the roadways.

The Will County Sheriff’s Department will be out in full force this holiday weekend, said Kathy Hoffmeyer, department spokeswoman.

“Our officers will be vigilant in keeping the roads safe and clear of drunk drivers,” she said. “We urge people to have a designated driver. A lot of families will be out traveling.”

Will County deputies will crack down on motorists driving under the influence or those who fail to wear seat belts in the front and back seats, she said.

Illinois transportation officials are partnering with state police and local law enforcement to remind drivers to buckle up and drive sober for what is typically one of the most heavily traveled periods of the year, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation news release.

Will, Grundy business owners prepare for busy weekend

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKORT – Shopping local is what keeps communities like Frankfort vibrant, said Liz Connolly, who owns a small business in the village.

For 15 years, Connolly and her husband, Marty, have owned Isabel’s Journey in a downtown area known for its 1890s architecture and quaint atmosphere. Inside her shop, she sells unique gift items, from holiday tablecloths to vegan and goat milk soap.

This weekend, Connolly, along with many other local business owners, will get ready for a day that will keep downtown Frankfort bustling – Small Business Saturday.

Many shops, including hers, plan to offer deals.

“That’s a real big day for us,” she said.

Small Business Saturday – launched by American Express in 2010 – encourages shoppers to head to local stores rather than big-box retailers such as Walmart and Best Buy. The day also coincides with the holiday shopping season after Thanksgiving and a slew of holiday events in Will and Grundy counties.

“We realize there is going to be times when you go to Walmart or Sears or the big chains,” said Jim Boucher, a board member of Will Buy Local, an organization that promotes shopping local. “But if there is a time to buy local, at least price compare and see what the little guy can do for you. You might be surprised.”

Small Business Saturday gives business owners in downtown Frankfort the opportunity to highlight what’s unique about their stores, said Alicia Joebgen, executive director of the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce.

Likewise, the day helps people understand that keeping their dollars local benefits the community, she said, as those businesses donate to scholarships offered by the chamber and local nonprofits.

“Our businesses understand investing in the community helps build their business,” Joebgen said.

Nancy Cartolano, owner of This and That Gifts in Frankfort, said Small Business Saturday makes people aware that if they shop locally, they can find more unique products than they could at bigger chains. Volunteers give meals to families in need Forest Park Community Center teams up with First Assembly of God

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The door was wide open Tuesday at the Forest Park Community Center, where families came to receive a Thanksgiving meal.

Volunteers with the community center and First Assembly of God church stood among boxes of food, turkey and bags of potatoes that would go into the hands of families in need. The nonprofit and the Joliet church partnered to distribute 300 Thanksgiving meals to the community.

“At least I know these families are eating during the holidays. Nobody should be hungry,” said Kathy Williams, a Forest Park Community Center food pantry supervisor.

Williams was one of several volunteers who helped deliver the meals, which consisted of turkey, potatoes, stuffing, dessert and other items. First Assembly of God, which provided the meals, received them from Northern Illinois Food Bank.

First Assembly of God has tried to help one block of the Forest Park area in Joliet with another initiative called “Adopt a Block.” Under the initiative, Melnick said, church members offer help to families in low-income areas with outdoor tasks and grocery shopping.

Joliet OTB moving, looking at Heroes West Sports Grill

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hawthorne Race Course plans to move its Joliet off-track betting parlor when the lease is up in May. Bookie Magee’s Hideaway & OTB, located in the back of the Menards and Walmart shopping center on Jefferson Street, was designed to be a combination sports bar, restaurant and betting parlor that would create the possibility of attracting new people to horse racing.

But the building no longer suits the OTB business, said Michele Schaade, assistant director of OTB operation for Hawthorne.

“The building is too big, and we’re really looking to get rid of the food and beverage,” Schaade said.

Hawthorne plans to move the OTB when the lease is up in May, she said, and wants to partner with a local restaurant and bar.

Joe Pecora, owner of Heroes West Sports Grill, presented such a proposal to the Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee this week. But Pecora is looking for $700,000 in tax incentives from the city to subsidize about 70 percent of the costs to build an OTB addition to Heroes West.

Joliet officials sounded skeptical about the idea, and

the committee suggested that Pecora meet with city staff to consider other options.

“You’ve got the controversial issue of public support for gambling, which we haven’t done with Hollywood Casino or Harrah’s,” City Manager Jim Hock told the committee.

Hock noted that the city also would be getting involved in a risky business that has seen declining revenues.

“It’s a modification of our public policy, especially with public funding for a majority of the project,” he said.

Pecora said that according to a study done by SB Friedman Development Advisors, the city could justify the spending as a

way to preserve about $634,000 in tax revenues that would be generated by the OTB over the next 10 years.

He said Hawthorne was not looking at other Joliet locations.

“Maybe they were flattering me, but the people who talked to me said we were the only restaurant in Joliet they were looking at,” he told the committee.

Schaade said Hawthorne has not yet looked for other sites but would have to consider locations in surrounding towns if the OTB does not go into Heroes West.

“We would have to look elsewhere outside of Joliet,”

Schaade told the committee.

“The building that we’re at just is not feasible anymore.”

Bookie Magee’s opened in 2004 when the OTB had to move out of the old Jefferson Square Mall that was demolished when Menards bought the property and redeveloped it. The standalone, spacious OTB with 160 betting tables and 200 TV screens was seen as a way to accommodate horse race bettors and appeal to the sports bar crowd at the same time.

Pecora said the plan to link up the OTB to an existing sports bar and restaurant “is the way all of them are going now. No one is building an OTB standalone.”

Joliet murder suspect representing self can watch video evidence in jail

Bonds is accused of firing a

shot into the Buick’s trunk in the 100 block of Ottawa Street in Joliet. Investigators said both men had a history of gang involvement, but Bonds killed Johnson because of a fight over a girl.

Bonds’ first trial in September 2011 ended with a hung jury. He was found guilty of murder during a second trial a year later. In January the appellate court said Bonds’ request to represent himself was improperly denied and ordered another trial.

Jail inmates are prohibit-

ed from keeping discs or disc cases that could be broken and sharpened. Last month Bonds had been allowed to watch the discs on a computer at a table outside his cell before returning them to jail staff, Knick said.

But a “clerical error” marked on Bonds’ documentation at the jail discontinued his video watching until it was brought to the court’s attention Monday, Knick said.

Though he is representing himself, Bonds is prohibited from using the phone at the Will County jail. Prosecutors have previously said phone recordings show Bonds offered payoffs to witnesses to change their testimony.

In December 2010, Michael Yarbrough was shot to death by an unknown assailant outside a barber shop in the 300 block of East Cass Street. Police said Yarbrough would’ve testified he was driving the SUV when Bonds shot Johnson.

Kungs Way job pushed back to spring

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Kungs Way residents will have to wait until next year for a new water main.

The water main is one of several being repaired or replaced in a West Side neighborhood where the infrastructure is reaching the 50-year mark.

The future of the Kungs Way water main was brought up at last week’s City Coun-

cil meeting. Utilities Director James Eggen last week said the project will be done “as soon as weather permits in the springtime.”

That job will be done along with another nearby main on Douglas Street.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman raised the issue, saying she had received many calls from residents of the 700 block of Kungs Way. “They’ve had several [breaks] over the last couple of

years,” Quillman said later.

Quillman said residents have felt the project was being delayed.

Eggen said the project was on a list of jobs for 2015 but got pushed back because of needs elsewhere, including another water main in the West Side area.

“We had two other projects that got moved up,” he said.

Those were a water main project recently completed on Springfield Avenue in front of

Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and another one along the Interstate 55 West Frontage Road.

Eggen said the Kungs Way main must be replaced. He said the city will let out the project for bids over the winter so work can begin in early spring.

“The water main is at the end of its life, and it has to be replaced,” he said. “It has multiple breaks in it.”

Kungs Way stretches about two blocks and the main will

be replaced along the entire street. The Douglas Street main will be replaced between Terry Drive and Westnedge Road.

The city has been working on water mains in the same general area this year. A water main was relined on Essington Road south of Glenwood Avenue in the summer before the Springfield Avenue project.

The city also plans to replace an aging water main on Republic Avenue next year.

“They had to dig down 17 feet to the sanitary sewer to make the repair,” Eggen said Tuesday. “We hope to get that

wrapped up today.”

A section of road 10 feet wide and 30 feet long then will have to be patched up before Springfield Avenue can be completely open again, he said. That work may go into next week depending on the

weather.

Eggen said it is possible that the vibration from rolling equipment used to complete the pavement overlay led to the collapse of an already-weakened sanitary sewer.

NEW LENOX – New Lenox is considering changes to an annexation agreement for a residential subdivision that has been empty for almost a decade on the south side of town.

The new owners of the long-planned, 165-lot Calistoga subdivision, which was first approved in 2006 for two-bedroom homes on about 8,200-square-foot lots, are asking for approval for traditional single-family three- and four-bedroom homes.

The property is at Laraway Road and Calistoga Drive behind Berkot’s Super Foods.

Village trustees expressed concern at the board’s meeting Monday about larger homes being built on the smaller lots, Community Development Director Robin Ellis said.

Reo Funding Solutions V LLC is requesting that the village remove the 1,500-squarefoot home size restrictions in the annexation agreement but has not submitted changes in lot sizes, which in the existing

agreement range from 8,280 to 9,000 square feet for about 104 lots, Ellis said.

Staff is willing to work with the developers on making changes if they bring them to the village, Ellis said.

The original plans for the smaller homes were targeting empty nesters, but with the decline in the real estate market, there was decreased interest from seniors who saw their own property values drop, Ellis said.

All the board trustees as well as Mayor Tim Baldermann said that approval for the amended agreement would hinge on changing the lot sizes to about 10,500 square feet.

“While we want to continue to see development in town, especially in the south side, they will have to build to our village standards,” Baldermann said in a later interview.

The annexation and specials use agreements came to the board for discussion Monday and will most likely come for approval, if changes are made, at one of its December meetings.

The levy was based on an estimated total equalized assessed valuation of $624.41 million.

The levy amount could result in a tax rate of 2.81, a tad lower than last year’s 2.82 and the prior year’s 2.84, but higher than the tax rates of 2008 to 2012.

After the meeting, however, Director of Finance Mike Schroeder said he would come back to the board in February, potentially with a significantly lower levy proposal. Several things are looming in Springfield, he said, that could affect the amount of taxes the district would want to levy.

He could have more information about the state’s decision on the rate cap by then, Schroeder said, and a better view of the state government’s ideas on pension shifts.

Last month, Schroeder proposed levying less than the

limiting rate. A tax rate of 2.75 could be achieved, he said, by reducing this year’s levy by the amount of the estimated new property EAV. That move would save taxpayers about $7.92 million over the next 20 years.

Considering both new property and the consumer price index increase and aiming for a tax levy of 2.73 could save taxpayers $11.64 million.

If Schroeder brings the new numbers to the board in February, a vote could be taken in March.

proved awarding the low bid of $1.29 million to R.L. Sohol General Contractor Inc. for the N.B. Galloway multipurpose room addition. The work will include the sound system, portable hot food tables, portable worktable, burner range, hot plate range with an oven, new convection oven, roller window shades and epoxy moisture management system.

The contract also includes adding more asphalt pavement to compensate for the asphalt that will be removed to accommodate the building addition.

An alternate option of a new

asphalt sidewalk leading to the playground at a cost of $14,500 was not approved at the meeting, as some board members thought the cost was not reasonable.

After the architect consults with the contractor and reports back to the board, the matter could be reconsidered at the December board meeting.

The board also approved the purchase of a 2015 Ford E-350 box truck with a lift gate for $33,923 from Currie Motors in Frankfort and the declaration of the district’s 2001 Chevy box truck as surplus.

CHANNAHON – The question of closing one of Channahon District 17’s four schools is off the table for now as school board members decided Monday to wait until next year’s enrollment numbers are in before making the decision.

At its second work-study session in two months devoted to school consolidation, the board listened to presentations by the district’s four principals. The principals addressed building use and what changes would be necessary should Pioneer Path School, which houses students in third and fourth grades, be closed and its pupils relocated to other district schools.

Student enrollment has been dropping steadily for the last few years. Closing one school would save costs in a number of arenas and seemed the likely direction the district was headed. However, this school year’s enrollment surprised the district with healthier-than-expected numbers.

According to Superintendent Nick Henkle, in-district enrollment now stands at about 1,260, which is a decrease of about 500 students since 2008.

Several consolidation options were considered at the work-study session.

Should Pioneer Path School be shuttered, N.B. Galloway Principal Mary Kelly said the addition of third grade to her school of kindergartners and first- and second-graders would require, among other things, an additional computer lab, more classroom space for special education resource rooms, an additional PE teacher who would be split with Three Rivers School, additional aides for lunch and recess, more nurse hours, more custodial help and

an increase in cafeteria server hours. Some services could be eliminated too, Kelly said.

Three Rivers School Principal Susan Kavich explained the ramifications of the scenario where fourth grade would be added to her fifth- and sixthgrade school. Five classrooms would need to be remodeled to give more classroom space, she said, and an additional computer lab would be needed.

More PE and other staff would be required, and additional parking spaces and possibly a playground update would be necessary.

If Channahon Junior High School were to add sixth grade to its seventh and eighth grades, Principal Chad Uphoff said an additional PE teacher and activities sponsors would be needed, as well as an additional computer lab, more space for special education, additional supervision nights and additional morning supervision.

A science lab would be closed at the junior high, Uphoff said.

Several board members reminded those present that with the decrease of 500 students in recent years, the school’s students and staff have spread out over the schools’ emptying spaces. It wouldn’t be that difficult to concentrate back in, they said.

It’s a matter of being responsible to the taxpayers, Pat Clower and a couple other board members said, and to not waste tax dollars by unnecessarily keeping four schools open when three would do.

Dee Foreman was in favor of consolidation, especially with the impending remodel of N.B. Galloway to accommodate an extra grade.

“We’ve spent $1 million on a room,” Foreman said, “and it feels like nobody wants to pull the trigger.”

Joseph was a longtime parishioner of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Crest Hill. He served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He worked for most of his 34 year career at Commonwealth Edison as a Master Mechanic at the Will County Generating Station until retiring in 1987. Joseph was a board member of Chase Lake HOA. He was also a member of CECO Recreation Club where he enjoyed camping and boating.

He was an avid traveler, visiting various destinations throughout the country with his wife and children.

Joseph’s love of life and family will continue on for generations to come.

Yorkville resident, passed away on November 20, 2015, with the same sassy attitude as when she lived.

She was born in Oswego Township on July 3, 1931. Having grown up in Yorkville Mary Ellen came back to her roots after retiring. Once back “home” she became a consummate volunteer at the Kendall County Food Pantry (aka: “The Hat Lady”) and was a representative for that organization at their “Stand By Me” fundraiser and the Yorkville “Crop Walk”. Her other volunteer hobbies included helping at the rummage sale at the Congregational Church bi-annually and she was one of the founding volunteers with the PADS organization in Yorkville.

Beloved mother and Grammy, devoted sister, fun and loving aunt & cousin, caring and silly friend.

Mary was the kind of woman who took care of everyone and was uncomfortable asking for help in return. She always had an incredible attitude and was well-loved.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Mary Larson (nee: Gyker); sister, Donna Jean Larson; and brother, John “Jack” Larson; daughter, Maria Elena; and son, Alan “Chauncey” Dempsay.

City officials spent months arguing that the footage could not be made public until the conclusion of several investigations. After the judge’s order, the investigations were quickly wrapped up and a charge announced.

Alvarez defended the 13 months it took to charge officer Jason Van Dyke. She said cases involving police present “highly complex” legal issues and that she would rather take the time to get it right than “rush to judgment.”

Alvarez said concern about the impending release prompted her to move up the announcement of the murder charge.

CHICAGO – A white Chicago police officer who shot a black teenager 16 times last year was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday, hours before the city released a video of the killing that many people fear could spark unrest.

City officials and community leaders have been bracing for the release of the dash-cam video, fearing the kind of turmoil that occurred in cities such as Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri, after young black men were slain by police or died in police custody.

A judge ordered that the recording be made public by Wednesday. Moments before it was released, the mayor and the police chief appealed for calm.

“People have a right to be angry. People have a right to protest. People have a right to free speech. But they do not have a right to ... criminal acts,” Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said.

Laquan McDonald, 17, swings into view on a four-lane street where police vehicles are stopped in the middle of the roadway. As he jogs down an empty lane, he appears to pull up his pants and then slows to a brisk walk, veering away from two officers who are emerging from a vehicle and drawing their guns.

Almost immediately, one of the officers appears to fire from close range. McDonald spins around and crumples to the pavement. The second officer simultaneously lowers his weapon.

The car with the camera continues to roll forward until the officers are out of the frame. Then McDonald can be seen lying on the ground, moving occasionally. At least two small puffs of smoke are seen coming off his body as the officer continues firing.

In the final moments, an officer kicks something out of McDonald’s hands.

Police have said the teen had a knife. Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said Tuesday that a 3-inch knife with its blade folded into

Turkey shoots down Russian jet it says violated its airspace

By JIM HEINTZ and SUZAN FRASER The Associated Press MOSCOW – Turkey shot down a Russian warplane Tuesday that it said ignored repeated warnings and crossed into its airspace from Syria, killing at least one of the two pilots in a longfeared escalation in tensions between Russia and NATO. Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced what he called a “stab in the back” and warned of “significant consequences.”

The shoot-down – the first time in half a century that a NATO member has downed a Russian plane – prompted an emergency meeting of the alliance. The incident highlighted the chaotic complexity of Syria’s civil war, where multiple groups with clashing alliances are fighting on the ground and the sky is crowded with aircraft bombing various targets.

“As we have repeatedly made clear we stand in solidarity with Turkey and sup-

port the territorial integrity of our NATO ally, Turkey,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told a news conference after the meeting of the alliance’s decision-making North Atlantic Council, called at Turkey’s request.

The pilots of the downed Su-24 ejected, but one was killed by Syrian rebel fire from the ground as he parachuted to Earth, said the Russian general staff, insisting the Russian jet had been in Syrian airspace at the time.

Bridge connecting St. Louis, East St. Louis set to reopen

EAST ST. LOUIS – The Martin Luther King Bridge connecting East St. Louis to St. Louis is set to reopen after being closed for construction.

The bridge crossing the Mississippi River is scheduled to reopen to traffic the week of Dec. 21, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The bridge has been closed since July 20 for a $15.9 million reconstruction project, which includes removal of its

deck, replacing the middle truss span, steel structural repairs and painting.

Lora Rensing, acting project implementation engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said officials met Monday and pinpointed a timeline to reopen the bridge. Rensing said an exact date for the reopening hasn’t been set, and that shortterm closures on weekends and nights could still happen to finish work such as removing scaffolding.

The bridge was set to tentatively close from July 6 through Nov. 24, with the timeline contingent on all westbound lanes of the Poplar Street Bridge being reopened. But that was delayed by rainy weather.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A Thanksgiving message from the General Society of Mayflower Descendants To the Editor: On this Nov. 26, as you carve the turkey and look around the table at your loved ones, there are important lessons you can teach both young and old about our American Thanksgiving holiday.

When the Pilgrims traveled to America on the Mayflower, before coming ashore, they wrote a Compact – or an agreement – on how they would govern themselves. That document inspired the Founding Fathers as they drafted our U.S. Constitution. The Pilgrims are among the few colonists during the Colonial period who practiced self-governance.

The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians wrote a treaty,

once they made contact in New England, that allowed them to live together peacefully for 50 years. Plymouth Colony stood out admirably for its consistent attempt to treat Native Americans fairly in the courts, for paying Natives for land, and for allowing the courts to settle differences between the Pilgrims and Indians.

As you enjoy your delicious meal on our national Thanksgiving holiday, you are repeating a celebration the Pilgrims shared with the Native Americans in 1621, one year after they arrived in America. After gathering a bountiful harvest, a three-day Thanksgiving celebration was enjoyed with 90 members of the Wampanoag Tribe, including Chief Massasoit. Their shared thanksgiving included food,

games and fellowship.

In honor of the 1621 celebration between the Pilgrims and Native Americans, on Oct. 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation declaring the last Thursday in November to be a day of “thanksgiving and praise.”

Hopefully, discussing the Pilgrim story will create meaningful conversation around your table on Thanksgiving Day. Opening night in the boys basketball season was an eye-opener.

I had the opportunity Monday to see most or all of three games in the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic at the University of St. Francis Sullivan Center in Joliet. And in each, one team ranked as a pleasant surprise.

The three were Lemont, which knocked off Minooka, 54-46; Lockport, which built a huge lead en route to a 48-34 victory over Providence; and

Romeoville, which overcame an early deficit to down Plainfield Central, 72-51.

When you consider twotime defending champion Joliet Central played the fourth game of the night on its home floor and beat Rich East, 61-55, the pool-play portion of the tournament certainly has become interesting.

In Group A, you have Joliet Central and Romeoville. Lemont, Lockport and Minooka all are in Group B. You wonder, when Saturday rolls around,

“That No. 22 [Butler] was a mismatch problem for us,” Runaas said. “He was too quick for Nick [Wisz], and Rory [Cunningham] couldn’t solve him, either.”

Spartans overcome inexperienced Wildcats

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Plainfield Central got off to a 15-9 first-quarter lead over Southwest Prairie rival Romeoville on Monday night in the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic matchup at the University of St. Francis Sullivan Center.

Then the learning process for Game 1 of the season began. The inexperienced Wildcats were outscored, 25-9, in the second quarter to fall behind, 34-24, at halftime, and the youthful Spartans went on to claim a 72-51 victory.

“After we got the early lead, we let the game calm down and let them get comfortable with what they were doing offensively and defen-

sively,” Central coach Steve Lamberti said.

“The second quarter definitely is part of the learning process. We have to realize that we need to stick with it and stay fundamentally sound.”

“We couldn’t buy a bucket early on,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “There were some nerves, some jitters. But as soon as we got more comfortable, we found a groove.”

Romeoville boasts a senior leader in forward Matt Cappelletti, the Spartans’ top player a year ago. He finished with 13 points, but more importantly continued to provide leadership for a young group.

“We also started three sophomores [guards London Stamps, DeAndre Heckard and Rayshawn Willison] and our first two guys off the bench are a sophomore [Dontia Johnson] and a freshman [Mike Slater].”

Heckard and Stamps, however, already have plenty of varsity experience.

“DeAndre and London are young but experienced,” Howard said. “They complement each other real well. And at halftime, I saw them communicating with the other players. That was good to see.”

Stamps finished with 18 points, Heckard with 17, and Willison and Slater with seven each. Heckard had four

assists, Stamps three and Willison two. The Spartans shot 46.3 percent on 25 of 54 and were 7 of 18 from 3-point range in an impressive beginning.

“We’re playing to win the tournament,” said Howard, whose team faces two-time defending champion Joliet Central at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

“We’re young, but confident.

We’re looking to build that confidence every game.”

Plainfield Central, meanwhile, is short on experience.

“We basically have two or three guys with any significant experience,” Lamberti said. “Chris Bowitz, who was our starting point guard the second half of last season, is out right now with an injury, and that hurts.

“It’s one of those things where if your guys haven’t played a lot of varsity basketball, it’s tough. You have to try to continue doing what you do well and try to eliminate the things you aren’t doing well.

But when you are facing quality, well-coached teams every night, it’s not easy.”

Wildcats junior guard Sedrick Brooks scored 15 points.

Scott Gustafson chipped in with 11, and Justin Windt had 10. Windt, Michael Lyons and Matt Dvorak each had six rebounds as Central outrebounded Romeoville, 38-35.

However, 17 turnovers and .356 shooting, including 4 of 18 from 3-point range, helped doom the Wildcats, who play at 3 p.m. Wednesday against Rich East.

The next team that commanded everyone’s attention was Lockport, which made coach Brett Hespell’s debut as the head coach a smashing success.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity,” Hespell said. “I’m a Porter through and through. I’m thankful for all that [former coach] Larry Thompson taught me and did for me. I have great kids and great assistant coaches.”

So for now, things could not be better for the Porters, a team that hopes to bring the same high energy game in and game out that it demonstrated Monday.

Lockport can go at least 10 deep, and Matt Chmielewski – a standout offensive lineman in football – logged 13 minutes against Providence. Blake Parzych, an outstanding defensive end at Minooka, is the regular center and played 15 minutes Monday.

The Minooka vs. Lockport game will be competitive regardless, but you can’t help but hope the two big guys will be on the floor simultaneously, at least for a while.

And finally, there was Romeoville.

With three sophomore starters and a sophomore and freshman the first two off the bench, you might expect some in-

consistency from the Spartans. However, they have talent; and their two top sophomores, London Stamps and DeAndre Heckerd, received a season full of varsity experience a year ago.

It is no secret Joliet Central relies on quickness on both ends of the floor. The game against Romeoville will present an athletic matchup that will be fun regardless of the outcome. Central could put itself in great shape to play in Saturday’s championship game, but Romeoville coach Marc Howard said his team is playing the tournament to win it.

One night does not make a season, but what we saw Monday suggests if you come out to the tournament Wednesday, Friday and/or Saturday, you are guaranteed some excellent basketball.

Over at Joliet West, meanwhile, the Tigers already have shown they can be a load with their uptempo approach.

Bolingbrook, third in the state in Class 4A last season, will be strong again. Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-Way West have the potential to be good.

Plainfield North is missing its big man as Kyle Speas recovers from a football injury. But the Tigers have Kevin Krieger and will be a team to reckon with later if not sooner. Plainfield East and Plainfield South cannot be overlooked.

All of a sudden, boys basketball in the area has taken on a more optimistic look. It feels good to say that.

CLASS 5A IHSA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

By DRAKE SKLEBA CHAMPAIGN – For the first time in the seven-year history of Lincoln-Way West, a Warriors’ team will play for an IHSA state championship.

After disposing of Champaign Central, 42-14, in last Saturday’s semifinal, the football Warriors will vie for the Class 5A state title. Huskie Stadium, on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, will be the venue as the Warriors (11-2) meet Nazareth (11-2) at 10 a.m. Saturday.

West dominated Champaign Central (11-2) from the opening kickoff. After rushing for 192 of his game-high 266 yards and five-touchdown performance in the second half of the Warriors’ 40-13 quarterfinal win over Peoria, Gabe Montalvo faced the question: “What can you do for an encore?”

Montalvo came up with a 230-yard, five-touchdown effort that led the Warriors to a 35-0 halftime lead against Champaign.

With 4:24 left in the third quarter, quarterback Connor Lowman hit fullback Tom LaBerry with a swing pass. After a 77-yard run through the snow that covered the field, LaBerry and the Warriors led, 41-0. Kevin Siemeck’s kick made it 42-0.

Much to the delight of the Warriors and their frozen fans, LaBerry’s score initiated the running clock.

“It really is exciting to be going to state,” LaBerry said.

“It was just a short pass that Connor threw that I was fortunate to catch. It was a long, long run to the end zone, but it felt great. We all played so well. It was a great day.”

The Warriors were playing with heavy hearts as LaBerry’s mom, Kim, died Nov. 11.

“Everything I do, I do for her,” LaBerry said.

Montalvo finished with 242 yards on 24 carries with the five touchdowns. He now has rushed for 2,274 yards and scored 38 touchdowns. LaBerry’s touchdown, however, was an especially significant moment for Montalvo and all the

“Tom is a great kid.” Montalvo said. “He is great to be around, and I love him to death.”

“Everyone is proud of Tom,” offensive tackle Justin Witt said. “I know his mom is, too.”

“I was so happy for Tom when he scored his touchdown,” Lowman added.

The Warriors’ offensive line of Witt (North Carolina State), Bryan Brokop (Nebraska), Brett Bergman, Nate Henry, Jason Lucinski and tight end Ben Zordani dominated the line of scrimmage from the outset.

Meanwhile, the Warriors’ first-team defense – led by Deven Reed, Trey Telez and Dan Wainwright – shut out a Maroon offense that came in averaging 43 points.

Sophomore Ryan Robbins’ interception led to a Montalvo touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Junior Josh Bohne tackled Josh Parker in the end zone for a safety and a 16-0 lead. Sophomores Matt Murphy and Jake Price played well, as did seniors Cortez Michalski and Cam Gavin. Juniors Trevor

“It feels so good to be playing for a state championship for the first time in school history,” Robbins said. “I was really happy to get my interception. I felt it really helped give us momentum in the first quarter.

“It was awesome to see our band here and the great support we received. Hopefully, we can go to DeKalb on Saturday and take home a state championship.”

Telez added Maroons quarterback Walker Stillman to his ever-growing list of sack victims.

“This is so exciting,” Telez said. “We’re going to DeKalb to play for a state championship. Amazing. Nazareth is a great team that belongs in the state championship game. But we are also a great team and deserve to play for the state championship.”

Lowman completed just the one pass to LaBerry and has thrown for 1,277 yards and 13 touchdowns for the season.

Jake Mauney has hauled in 33

passes for 555 yards and seven touchdowns. Dylan McHale, who has had to overcome two ankle injuries, has made 26 catches for 394 yards and three touchdowns.

“I am so blessed to have the best running back in the state as my teammate,” Lowman said. “Gabe Montalvo is the best, bar none. It is simply amazing what he does each week, and to be going to DeKalb to play for the Class 5A state championship is unbelievable.”

Siemeck, who also punts, has 51 extra points and two field goals for 57 points. First down at the 20 has been the usual starting position for Warriors’ playoff opponents, as Siemeck repeatedly has put kicks into the end zone.

“Back in August, our goal was for us to get better each week,” Ernst said. “Our goal was to be playing in Week 14 and to win our last game of the season. Today, we put ourselves in that position to win a state championship. I am so proud of our kids. Today and all season, they played so hard. Let’s finish the job in DeKalb.”

Nazareth is no slouch. The Roadrunners destroyed Chicago Catholic White champ St. Laurence, 34-0, in snowy Burbank in the semifinals after ousting JCA, 35-21, in the quarterfinals.

Nazareth is led by Notre Dame-bound defensive back/ wide receiver/running back/ wildcat quarterback Julian Love. He went 99 yards on the first play from scrimmage against St. Laurence and scored three more times, finishing with 281 rushing yards.

For the season, he has rushed for 1,017 yards, a 10.6 average, and 18 touchdowns. He also has caught 26 passes for 655 yards, a 27.2 average, and seven scores.

Quarterback Carson Bartels has completed 115 of 221 passes for 1,840 yards and 17 touchdowns. Ivory Kelly-Martin has rushed for 1,802 yards, a 10.2 average, and 29 touchdowns. Christopher Simmons has grabbed 33 passes for 541 yards, a 16.4 average, and six scores.

Without a doubt, West will be facing a potent opponent in its first state championship game.

By MIKE FITZGERALD Shaw Media Correspondent FRANKFORT – Lincoln-Way East is 1-1 after dropping a 62-57 decision to Lincoln-Way Central on Tuesday night in the Pheast of the Phoenix Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament featuring all four Lincoln-Way high schools.

The Griffins led through three quarters, 43-41, but they hit a drought early in the fourth quarter that allowed the Knights (2-0) to take a 4843 lead with 5:07 to play. East did not score for the first 4½ minutes of the quarter.

A 55-52 winner over Lincoln-Way West on Monday, East pulled to within 55-54 with 1:04 to play on a 3-pointer by senior guard Kyle McDermed. The Knights finished strong, however, by sinking 7 of 9 free throws to seal the win.

“Give credit to Lincoln-Way Central for playing well defensively against us,” East coach Rich Kolimas said.

“I thought the drought came mainly because of poor shot selection. Once we had better ball movement and distributed the ball more, we had better shot selection.”

McDermed led East with 15 points, while Griffins senior guard Justin Siorek added 12 points. Kolimas does not think they will end up carrying the scoring load for the Griffins as the season moves forward.

“We’re going to be a deep team,” he said. “We have versatility at a lot of different positions. We’re not going to lean on anyone specifically.

We have the pieces to put together a pretty respectable season.

“They [Kyle and Justin] may carry the load for us on some nights, but we have

some talent at the junior level [Zack Tencza, Joey DiNaso, Max Shafer, Dan Mullhollan, Matt Moutvic and Nick Marietti] and some talent at the sophomore level [Joe Buggemi, Zach Parduhn and Sam Shafer].

“While Kyle and Justin may have more experience than those other guys, the other guys will contribute.

We don’t know who is going to step up on any given night, so early on it might be Justin and Kyle; but as the season progresses, it might be somebody else.”

The Griffins also have a solid low-post player in the 6-foot-5 Marietti.

“He’s that guy. He’s not huge, but he’s very strong in the post, and he’s fundamentally sound in the post. He’s the guy we’ll be looking to score in the post,” Kolimas said.

Defense also will play a

role in how successful East is this season, especially when it comes time to play in the Southwest Suburban Conference Blue.

“We’ve got to get much better defensively,” Kolimas said. “We have the shell of a good defense right now, but our instincts aren’t there yet.

We have to communicate better on defense, so I think that’s where the biggest improvement has to come from.”

Seniors Matt Sobczak, Max Vaundry and Lucas Galifos round out the Griffins’ roster.

Central coach Bob Curran had a commitment immediately after the game and was not available to discuss the Knights.

Senior forward Mikey Koszela led Central with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Guard Aaron Michalak came off the bench to score seven points in the first half.

Short-handed Warriors rebound

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent FRANKFORT – People who look at the early-season results of the Lincoln-Way West boys basketball team should not be misled.

The Warriors never have begun a basketball season missing players. This season, with the football team playing in the Class 5A state championship Saturday, the Warriors have to carry on a little longer missing three key ingredients.

Senior Cameron Gavin, along with juniors Cal Pohrte and Nolan Green, will be in DeKalb this weekend.

“Those three football players are three key members of this team,” West coach Brian Flaherty said.

“We will be in touch with them when the football season concludes this weekend, and we will see when they will be ready.”

On Tuesday night at the

Pheast of The Phoenix basketball tournament featuring the four Lincoln-Way schools, the Warriors (1-1) bounced back with a 5539 victory over host Lincoln-Way North. This was on the heels of a 55-52 defeat to Lincoln-Way East on Monday.

The Warriors are playing the tournament with eight players.

“In the two early games, we have done some things that are uncharacteristic for our basketball team,” Flaherty said. “However, the one positive has been getting on the floor playing minutes for our younger players and the ones with not much experience at the varsity level.

That will really help us develop the depth that we really need this season.”

In the victory over the Phoenix, the Warriors were led junior point guard Marco Pettinato. He scored 29 points, was 15 of 18 from the

free-throw line and grabbed nine rebounds.

“It’s definitely different without our three teammates who are still playing football,” Pettinato said. “We have never been in this position before, and we just have to deal with it. We are putting in new plays. And, yes, they will be back, but it’s going to take them a little time to get into basketball shape.

One thing that has helped is that we have had good practices with what we have right now.”

Pettinato, who controlled the tempo on both ends, felt he had to make up for the previous night’s loss to Lincoln-Way East.

“I missed two free throws at the end against East, and I felt like I lost the game,” he said. “I wanted to come out tonight and make up for that loss. I really felt I let my teammates down.”

Even with the inexperience, Flaherty knows he has

two great leaders.

“With Marco and Jon Marotta, you won’t find more experienced high school players around,” he said. “We lost some length from last season’s team, but once we get our roster back, we will be all right.”

The Warriors jumped to a 17-7 first quarter lead against North and extended it to 2413 at the half without a field goal in the second quarter.

West hit 7-of-10 free throws, with Pettinato making 6-of8. The Warriors missed five shots but had nine rebounds and held North to three made field goals.

The Warriors never looked back as they stretched the lead to 39-25 after three quarters.

“Everything we do matters, whether it’s the first week of games or later in the season,” Flaherty said.

“We compete, and we strive to win every time out on the floor.”

Mad Max, indeed: Max Strus scores 52 SUBMITTED REPORTS MIDLAND, Michigan – Lewis sophomore forward Max Strus turned in a performance for the ages as he collected a school-record 52 points, drained 12 3-pointers and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Flyers earned a 99-95 regional victory Tuesday evening over Northwood at the Bennett Center.

Strus was 14-for-18 from the field, including an unheard-of 12-for-14 from beyond the arc.

He broke the previous school record of 46 points set by John Lucas during the 1969-70 season. It ties the Great Lakes Valley Conference record for points scored previously held

by LaVontay Fenderson (UWParkside, 2009) and Gary Paul (Indianapolis, 1988).

Strus also shattered the previous Bennett Center scoring record of 45. It is the most points scored by any player at any level of NCAA basketball this season and the most 3-pointers by anyone in the NCAA this season.

“It was the most amazing performance that I have witnessed at any level,” Lewis coach Scott Trost said.

Lewis improved to 4-1 while the host Timberwolves fell to 3-2. The Flyers return to action Saturday, hosting Wayne State for a 3 p.m. regional showdown at Neil Carey Arena.

But when it came down to it, we just didn’t get a couple of stops that we needed and missed some good 3s.

“The good thing is that we get to play them two more times, and we’ll battle them, just like they’ll battle us.

Coach White does a great job and has his players prepared, the same as us. I like what we’ve done early in the season, and we’re trying to get ready for February. We’ve got some different ages out there, but it’s fun to watch the group come together.”

Positive signs for Lemont, Joliet Central

By DENNIS NELSON Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – Joliet Central and Lemont are very different girls basketball teams.

Lemont is young, balanced and 4-1 after winning three of four games at the Romeoville Thanksgiving Tournament.

Joliet is senior-laden and experienced, but just 1-4 after dropping three of four at the round-robin tournament that ended Monday.

“I knew we could do what we’re doing, and we can play a lot better than we have,” Lemont coach Bill Bozue said. “We have a lot of work to do on defense, but we’re getting there, and we’re 4-1.”

Lemont has featured a different leading scorer in every game.

“I like the way we run our offense and share the ball,” Bozue said. “Anybody can be a leading scorer who comes into the game.

We have great teamwork.”

In the Indians’ 58-49 win Monday over Joliet Central, sophomore Emma Bozue came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points. Junior

“We have to come out ready to play every night,” Joliet Central coach Brian Reed said. “It’s early in the season. We have a lot of corrections to make, but the main thing is coming out ready to play every night.”

The Steelmen feature five senior starters. Among them are leading scorer Monica Barefield (17.6 points per game), Morgan Jones and Ashley Hare.

“It’s a long season,” Reed said.

“They just have to get mentally tougher, and I think they will do that. We have some girls who will pull the rest of the girls along.”

Barefield, a 5-foot-2 guard, and Hare, a 5-7 guard, are long-range threats from almost anywhere on the court, while the 5-9 Jones patrols the post and averages 10 points.

“I want to see more energy,” Reed said. “I want to see us make more adjustments on the fly. This is the greatest group of girls I’ve ever had. I want to see them be more competitive.”

“We only had one senior who graduated last year, so we’re still very young. We’ve had freshmen on the varsity for the last couple of years, so now they’re sophomores and juniors, so now it’s time for them to mature. If they come together, it should be a fun year.”

NEW LENOX – As Lincoln-Way Central’s Knights Tournament wound down Tuesday, three local girls basketball teams walked away feeling upbeat about how they’ve started the season.

Lincol n-Way West improved to 4-0 after claiming a 57-48 victory over 2-2 Lincoln-Way Central, while 4-1 Plainfield North captured a 5641 win over Joliet West.

Coach Ryan White’s Warriors won the tournament title after staging a big fourth-quarter comeback against North to win in overtime Monday and followed that up by grabbing an early lead and maintaining it throughout against the Knights.

“Last night, we were down by 12 points in the fourth quarter and came back to win, so they showed that they can be down and come back,” White

said. “We shot the ball well in our first two games, and we’ve moved the ball and been able to score some points.

“We’ve got some freshmen and a junior who was on the sophomore team who are playing their first varsity games, and we’ve seen some positive things out of them. They’ve got some big shoes to fill, but I think through time they’ll do the best that they can to fill those shoes.”

After Central scored the game’s first basket, West collected the next nine points to move in front for good. The Knights were able to pull to within four points on two occasions in the second quarter, but the Warriors responded by grabbing a 29-18 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Central twice pulled to within six points, but the Warriors took a 39-27 lead with eight minutes left, and the Knights never were able to get any closer

Forte ‘excited’ to help after missing 3 games from injury

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Bears running back Matt Forte is ready to return Thursday against the Packers from the sprained medial collateral ligament that forced him to miss three consecutive games for only the second time in his career.

“I’m excited just to get back out there,” Forte said Tuesday. “Not really a lot of fun watching the games and not being able to help your team win, so I’m not really used to doing that.”

Forte warmed up before Sunday’s Broncos game and could’ve played, he said, but the Bears declined with a short week ahead of Thanksgiving at Lambeau Field.

“It was more of a … not a full-full practice, but I was running full speed because I wanted to get the feeling and timing of making cuts and doing all that stuff,” he said of Tuesday’s work. “I did that before the pregame on Sunday as well, and I felt good.

I’m good enough to go.”

Rookie Jeremy Langford performed yeoman’s work with Forte out, averaging 122

scrimmage yards while scoring four touchdowns. Adam Gase is excited for the opportunity to acclimate Forte back into the offense, knowing now what he has in both backs. It’s a good problem to have, Gase said.

“You’re always trying to find the hot hand,” he said.

“I think Forte getting back, it’s going to be exciting for me. I felt like we had a great rhythm going when he was in there. I thought Jeremy did a great job as far as stepping in and keeping that momentum going. And now, we have a chance to have a really interesting one-two punch here with Matt and Jeremy.”

Langford repeatedly has lauded Forte for aiding the rookie’s growth, and Forte said having Langford to spell him should only maximize his production.

“I don’t have to play every down, but when I do get in, I can give over 100 percent effort, whether I’m running with the ball or blocking,” he said.

Against Green Bay

The Bears’ best rushing day came in its Week 1 loss to Green Bay – 189 yards at

5.7 yards a pop, including 141 from Forte, his fourth time eclipsing the century mark in his past five meetings with Green Bay. “The offensive line did a great job of controlling their front,” Forte said. “They’ve got a lot of big guys up there in their 3-4 defense. If we can control those guys and establish the run, that’s key. It helps out the passing game and makes you effective in the red zone, too, where we’ve been struggling.”

The Packers last week held NFL rushing leader Adrian Peterson to 45 yards, his lowest total since Week 1, and forced a fumble. Their meeting with the Bears last season at Lambeau Field, a 55-14 throttling, saw defensive coordinator Dom Capers transition Clay Matthews inside, a move that sparked the Packers’ defense and limited Forte.

“I kind of forgot that game,” Forte said. “It was just embarrassing. … The way the game went it kind of is embarrassing. It’s time the Bears stopped going up there and losing games like that.”

Forte’s return can only help.

LAKE FOREST – The Bears held their one and only practice of the week Tuesday before playing Thanksgiving night at Green Bay. Eddie Royal (knee), Antrel Rolle (knee) and Ka’Deem Carey (concussion) did not practice and likely won’t play against the Packers. The official injury report will come out Wednesday.

Matt Forte (knee), Alshon Jeffery (groin, shoulder), Pernell McPhee (knee), Martellus Bennett (ribs), Sherrod Martin (neck) and LaRoy Reynolds (knee) were all limited. Jarvis Jenkins (chest) and Marquess Wilson (groin) were full participants.

Forte is set to make his first start since injuring his medial collateral ligament Nov. 1 against the Vikings.

Jeffery said he feels “a lot better than I felt last week,” but added, “we’re going to see on Thursday,” when asked about his status for the game.

“We’ve just got to get everybody healthy and everybody out there together,” he said about the offense. “…

The sky’s the limit for this offense.”

McPhee was limited to 38 snaps in the loss to Denver after missing the win over the Rams. Vic Fangio said it’s on McPhee to decide his availability throughout the game as he plays through the injury.

“It’s mainly up to him.

He’s trying his best,” Fangio said. “There was one point in the game the other day when I was told he was done and wasn’t going to play anymore. Then I look up and he’s out there two series later. So it’s up to him right now.”

McPhee, for his part, con-

tinued to downplay any injury.

“What knee? I ain’t got no knee problems,” he said.

“I’m good. … I’m healthy, man. What are you all talking about? I’m good.”

Assuming Rolle is out, Chris Prosinski will get his second start at safety alongside Adrian Amos, and Fangio alluded to that much when discussing Prosinski’s quick promotion following Rolle’s injury in the team’s walkthrough last week.

“It was unusual for a guy to go down late on a Friday afternoon, but Chris was ready to go and did a commendable job,” Fangio said.

“That’s just the way it is. All 32 teams have next-man-up mantras, so one man’s problem is another man’s opportunity. We’ll see how Chris does this week for the second time.”

Banged-up Packers O-line:

Center Corey Linsley (ankle), Jared Abbrederis (rib/ chest) and Ty Montgomery (ankle) did not practice. The other four starters on the offensive line were limited – LT David Bakhtiari (knee), RT Bryan Bulaga (knee), RG T.J. Lang (shoulder) and LG Josh Sitton (knee).

Davante Adams, Micah Hyde, Clay Matthews, Mike Pennel and Damarious Randall also were limited in practice.

Quick hits: The Ravens, whose offensive coordinator is former Bears coach Marc Trestman, claimed Jimmy Clausen off waivers. … McPhee made it pretty clear how he intends to stop Aaron Rodgers on Thursday night. “Hit his [butt]. That’s it. Just hit him. Nothing else. We just need to hit his [butt]. He won’t be able to run then.” … When asked where Rodgers ranks among the best quarterbacks he’s prepared for, Fangio replied, “I don’t know if he’s the best, but there’s nobody better.”

Ohio tops injured-riddled NIU DeKALB – The Ohio football team knocked the Northern Illinois’ quarterback out of the game on Tuesday and potentially knocked the Huskies out of the Mid-American Championship game.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Graham, who has been successful in his two previous starts, was injured in the second half, and the Huskies lost, 26-21, to the Bobcats Tuesday night at Huskie Stadium.

Graham, who was injured on a sack late in the third, finished 11 for 17 with 142 yards and a touchdown.

With junior Drew Hare (Achilles) and Anthony Maddie (back) already out for the year with injuries, freshman Tommy Fiedler filled in the rest of the way. The left-handed Fiedler went 9 for 17 with 113 yards and made things interesting with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Golladay with 1:45 left in the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chris Collins watched helplessly from the sideline as Northwestern blew most of a 20-point first-half lead against Missouri Tuesday night in the consolation game of the CBE Classic.

Tre Demps and Bryant McIntosh scored 13 points apiece, and Northwestern held

on through foul trouble and a tense closing stretch for a 67-62 victory over the Tigers.

Roasting numbers The following roasting time estimates are based on a stuffed turkey cooked at 325 degrees F. in a standard oven.

Reduce cooking time by 20 to 40 minutes for turkeys that are not stuffed.

And remember, a crowded oven cooks more slowly, so plan ahead if your bird needs to share the space.

The meat needs to hit 165 degrees F. for safe eating.

hanksgiving math actually isn’t all that hard. You just need to use a few basic equations. For example, to estimate the amount of wine you’ll need, begin by multiplying the number of in-laws you are expecting by the estimated number of offensive jokes your uncle is likely to tell (remember to round up). Take the product of that and multiply it by the number of children likely to overhear the offensive jokes. Buy that many bottles of wine. Or perhaps you need to know how many pies to serve. Tally the total number of guests, then add another eight guests to that number to account for your niece’s heartthrob of the moment (who may or may not come, but if he does will eat an entire

pie himself). Now subtract 12 from your total to account for the guests who without warning will diagnose themselves as gluten-sensitive, fruit-free, paleo-centric or anti-sugar. Buy that many pies.

For more help navigating the Thanksgiving math minefield, we’ve assembled cheat sheets to the most common culinary calculations. And because this is Thanksgiving, all estimates are generous to allow for plenty of seconds and leftovers. Speaking of which, we have some delicious ways to use those leftovers that go beyond the turkey sandwich. Think cranberry sauce pancakes or turkey tacos to vary the flavors. After all, this may be our favorite feast of the year, but that doesn’t mean we want to eat it every day for the next week.

CRANBERRIES INVITED TO BREAKFAST Cranberry Sauce, Oat and Flax Pancakes Start to finish: 20 minutes – Makes 10 pancakes

½ cup oat flour (or 3/4 cup oats,

pulsed in food processor until finely ground) ¼ cup almond flour (also called almond meal) 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 3 tablespoons flax meal (ground flaxseed) 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ cup plain low-fat Greek yogurt 2/3 cup prepared cranberry sauce (whole berry or jellied) 1 teaspoon orange zest 1 egg 2/3 cup low-fat milk (dairy or non-dairy) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Heat a nonstick griddle over medium while preparing the batter. Heat the oven to 200 degrees F.

The leftovers: For food safety reasons, leftovers should be cleared from the table and refrigerated within two hours of being served. Once refrigerated, they should be consumed within three to four days. Leftovers can be frozen for three to four months. Though safe to consume after four months, they will start to taste off.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the oat flour, almond flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, flax meal and cinnamon.

In a second medium bowl, briskly whisk together the yogurt and cranberry sauce to break up the cranberry sauce. Add the orange zest, egg, milk and vanilla and whisk until smooth (not counting chunks from any whole cranberries). Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and gently stir with a whisk, incorporating all the ingredients, being careful not to overmix.

Lightly mist the hot griddle with cooking spray. Using a ¼-cup

measuring cup, scoop batter onto the prepared griddle, being careful not to crowd the griddle. Cook until the pancake batter is nearly dry, 2 to 3 minutes, then flip and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a heat-safe plate and set in the oven to keep warm. Repeat with remaining batter. Serve with desired toppings.

Nutrition information per pancake: 130 calories; 30 calories from fat (23 percent of total calories); 3 g fat (0.5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 25 mg cholesterol; 190 mg sodium; 18 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 8 g sugar; 4 g protein.

How much to cook?

Leftovers are great, but without a little planning based on how many guests you are expecting, food could wind up going to waste or, worst of all, guests could go home hungry. Use this guide when prepping Thanksgiving dishes.

If your goal is to have ample leftovers, aim for 1½ pounds a person no matter how big the turkey is.

• For 8 people, buy a 12-pound turkey.

• For 10 people, buy a 15-pound turkey.

• For 12 people, buy an 18-pound turkey.

• For 14 people, buy a 20-pound turkey.

Carrots: A 1-pound bag makes 4 to 5 servings.

Cranberry sauce: A 12-ounce package of fresh cranberries makes about 2¼ cups of sauce; a 16-ounce can has 6 servings.

Gravy: Plan for 1/3 cup of gravy a person.

Green beans: 1½ pounds of beans makes 6 to 8 servings.

Mashed potatoes: A 5-pound bag of potatoes makes 10 servings.

Stuffing: A 14-ounce bag of stuffing makes about 11 servings.

Pie: A 9-inch pie can be cut into 8 modest slices.

Whipped cream: Dolloping whipped cream on those 8 modest slices will require 1 cup of heavy cream beaten with 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (a splash of vanilla extract is nice, too).

Over West’s first double, North raised pre-emptively to game with five-card spade support, a weak hand, a singleton, and an eye on the favorable vulnerability. West’s second double promised extra strength. Then East might have bid to the five-level, but he had only one point and the vulnerability was adverse. (Note that five hearts is defeated only if South gets a club ruff.)

South should be worried about losing one spade, one heart and two diamonds. But if West began with both missing trumps, he is a candidate for an endplay – for which declarer must first eliminate the rounded suits.

After winning trick two with dummy’s club ace, South must ruff a club in his hand.

Then the play proceeds: spade ace, heart ruff, club ruff, heart ruff and club ruff. With his preparations complete, declarer exits with a trump (or leads his diamond king).

West wins but is stuck. If he plays a diamond, South loses only one trick there.

Or if West leads a heart, declarer ruffs in one hand and sluffs a diamond from the other.

ture (which involves the upper part of the thigh bone) or a fracture of the vertebrae (bones of the spine), he or she should stay on the drugs. If the risk is relatively low, he or she should consider going off the drugs after five years.

You can estimate your risk of fractures by using a tool from the World Health Organization called FRAX. The FRAX tool includes information about you, including the T score of your bone density test.

The T score compares the density of your bone to the bone of the average young adult. (I have information about the FRAX on my website, www. askdoctork.com.)

To boil it down, I am telling my patients if they have been on bisphosphonates for less than five years, stay on them. On the other hand, if they’ve been on the medicines for five years or more and they have: • a T score that is lower than minus-2.5 at the hip, stay on the medicines.

• a T score that is lower than minus-2, and they have had a fracture of one of the vertebrae in the past, stay on the medicines.

• a T score that is higher than minus-2 and no past fractures, stop the bisphosphonates and check their bone density test in six to 12 months.

This is general advice, rather than a specific recommendation for you.

There may be aspects of your personal medical history I don’t know. You should talk to your doctor to find out what’s right for you.

a pill for osteoporosis because my doctor says stronger bones will reduce my risk of fractures.

But a friend recently told me some osteoporosis medicines actually cause fractures. Can you un-confuse me?

Dear Reader: I know what you’re referring to, and it is confusing – even for doctors. So let me try to make it less confusing.

Osteoporosis does make your bones more susceptible to fractures, and a group of drugs called bisphosphonates do treat osteoporosis successfully. These drugs include alendronate (Fosamax), ibandronate (Boniva), risedronate (Actonel) and zoledronic acid (Reclast). People typically remain on these drugs for years.

There is no doubt these drugs work. They slow and even reverse the thinning of bones.

They reduce the risk of common fractures, such as hip fractures, by 50 percent or more.

However, paradoxically, these medicines can cause two rare types of fractures: a fracture of the jaw and fractures of the middle of the thigh bone. That’s particularly true in people taking bisphosphonate drugs for a long time.

How long should the drugs be taken? They definitely reduce common fractures in people taking them for three to five years. There is no strong evidence they continue to work if continued beyond five years, but it’s reasonable to believe they might.

After talking with my colleagues here at Harvard Medical School who are experts on this question, here’s what I’m telling my patients. If a person has a relatively high risk for developing a common type of hip frac-

Dear Abby: While I was nine months pregnant with my first child, I asked my husband what he would say if I had any problem during my delivery and he was asked to choose between me or the baby. His answer was, “Of course I’d pick the baby because you never can replace the baby.” His answer broke my heart. Four days later, my water broke at 36 weeks, and I thank God for giving me a healthy little boy.

My advice is, dry your tears and remember what he implied about wives being replaceable also can be said about husbands. The U.S. Army is distributing this public notice to announce the availability of the Administrative Record for review, which documents the decision to complete a Time-Critical Removal Action (TCRA) taking place at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant (JOAAP) in Will County, Illinois.

The Final Action Memorandum, dated August 2014, documents the decision to undertake a TCRA at the L3 Capped Area Munitions Response Site (MRS). The U.S. Army will conduct a removal action of contaminated soil and munitions and explosives of concern in order to eliminate the potential threat of explosion and the possible migration or release of hazardous substances at the L3 Capped Area MRS. The existing Record of Decision (ROD), which selected construction of the 3.3acre landfill as the final rememdy, will be modified to incorporate the L3 Capped Area MRS TCRA into the Final ROD after the TCRA has been completed. The TCRA is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
