New Lenox Railroad Depot New Lenox Township was established when Will County was created in 1852, with the building of the Rock Island Railroad between Chicago and Rock Island.

With the railroad as the conduit, New Lenox developed a strong economy based upon agricultural production.

Early businesses, like a grain elevator, wagon shops, mills, lumber shops and blacksmiths highlight early New Lenox as an agricultural settlement.

By the end of the 19th century, three railroads crossed within the vicinity of New Lenox: The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, the Wabash Railroad and the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railroad.

Despite the potential railroad advantage, the growth of the town was relatively slow, compared with Joliet and neighboring communities.

It was not until the mid1920s, when the Rock Island electric trains began to run service through the town, did the community attract more individuals who used the railroads to commute to Chicago.

Located just east of Cedar Road, the historic then photograph shows a view of the Rock Island Depot looking east in the early 20th century.

HOLIDAY HOPE Herald Angels addresses a growing need in Will County

It could be a person you pass on the street every day, or a family on your block, an old neighbor or close friend.

Whatever they are in need of, one in four Will County residents annually relies on the partner agencies of the United Way of Will County.

The services they may need could be the basic necessities, such as food and clothing, to the more dire needs, such as crisis intervention and emergency housing. A person could need grief support, or a hot meal from the Senior Services Center or a homeless shelter operated by Daybreak Center.

This holiday season, The Herald-News is excited to bring back its Herald Angels giving campaign, which allows readers to make donations to the United Way of Will County if unable to do so through a workplace pro-

“The need in our community continues to grow,” Hennessy said. “One gift can help our 45 partner agencies, and we have raised significant funds through the past few Herald Angels campaigns, and we are very grateful.”

er for The Herald-News, said the campaign provides the public an easy way to support the United Way’s 45 partner agencies. All donations go to the United Way. “The publication’s staff is pleased to resume the Herald Angels campaign,” Wall said.

The campaign started in 2009 and ran consecutively until 2012.

Reviving the initiative, he said, is a testament to the publication’s mission of community advocacy.

“We are proud to continue this great program and help out as many of our neighbors as possible,” Wall said.

Hennessy said 100 percent of the money raised stays in Will County. The UWWC has a team of community volunteers that allocates how the funds are distributed between the partner agencies.

“Rest assured, the money stays local,” Hennessy said.

“The money helps neighbors, friends, people you may or may not know. It makes a difference in their life.”

Often, one person or family is helped by several partner agencies. Sarah Oprzedek, director of development for the UWWC, said the goal is to address as many needs as possible for each person.

“It’s not just one agency at work, it’s all of them wrapping their arms around a family,” Oprzedek said. “You’re helping people you see every day, and you have no idea the demons or issues they are

“For people with no health insurance, they can get help through no-cost services during their time of need,” Hennessy said of the UWWC’s benefits. “Our agencies even offer development therapy to children with special needs.

The need in the community continues to grow.”

Sheriff Kaupas’ first trip to Joliet – on the night train VIEWS Brian Stanley Paul Kaupas retires this month after 43 years in law enforcement and 12 years as Will County sheriff.

But 50 years ago, it seemed he was destined for the other side of law and order. After hearing references made by other cops and elected officials over the years, I once spent a break at the courthouse asking Kaupas about the first time he ever came to Will County.

“We were greasers,” Kaupas said of himself and his friends in 1964. Among their regular activities in the Chicago neighborhood was jumping onto freight trains around 99th Street and Vincennes Avenue and jumping off a few blocks later.

But about 11 p.m. one night “the train made a wrong turn” and sped off with 14-year-old

Paul on top of a flat car and four of his buddies in the box car ahead of him.

Kaupas recalled sticking his head out several times and narrowly missing getting clipped by bridges and poles. He estimated the train reached 80 miles an hour before it stopped at Scott and Jackson streets.

The boys walked to a nearby phone booth and looked at the directory.

“East Joliet, Illinois.

‘Where the ... is East Joliet?’ we asked. If you were in the city [of Chicago] you never left,” Kaupas said.

They headed to a hot dog stand that’s now a church near the former Hilltop DriveIn theater on Route 6. Kaupas was able to afford a meal for the group, but believes the owner called the cops because they “didn’t seem local.”

After being unable to provide a good reason for being out in the early morning hours, the juveniles were

brought to state police headquarters in Lockport.

“Same building that’s still there,” Kaupas noted.

“They called our folks. One mom got three guys. Chuckie Mitchell’s dad said ‘Keep him,’ [but] they put him on a Greyhound bus from Broadway the next morning,” Kaupas remembered. Kaupas’ mom got a ride from a neighbor to pick him up.

Kaupas knew she wasn’t happy when she allowed a counselor to take him to the YMCA gym where he and his friends were tied in a chair one at a time and given crew cuts by four adults.

But while the others were being shorn, Kaupas and Tom O’Malley broke open a wirescreened window and ran.

The counselors chased the punks through the streets in a ’54 Ford.

“One would get out and chase us on foot. Then run back when he got tired and trade off,” Kaupas said.

Kaupas was the last to surrender. His uncle, a bail bondsman, said he needed a haircut to go along with the suit he had to buy for court.

“We walked into the old Joliet courthouse,” Kaupas said.

“My uncle said ‘Hi, George.’

The judge said ‘Hi, Warren. ...

Is this your nephew?’ ” Kaupas told me the judge banged his gavel and immediately said, “Case dismissed.”

The sheriff recalled being annoyed his uncle had made him cut his hair knowing he could get him out of trouble anyway.

But within a few years, Kaupas’ hair was the same

length as every other Marine in Vietnam.

And his memorable experiences continued. During his tour, he and five other members on his special operations squad needed to get five miles up the road as quickly as possible. They ended up riding through a combat zone as passengers on Honda motorcycles.

Kaupas said the experience reminded him of “a z-grade” exploitation movie where the Hell’s Angels ride through Vietnam with rocket launchers on their bikes.

Trust me, his story is better.

Forest preserve steps up ash tree removal; $250,000 allocated

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – Thousands of ash trees within Will County forest preserves will be cut down in 2015, when the threat of infestation from the emerald ash borer beetle is expected to reach its peak in the region.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County will spend $250,000 in cash reserves next year for ash tree removal as a way of “staying ahead of the game,” said Ralph Schultz, director of planning and development for the district.

That’s up from the roughly $140,000 the district will end up spending this year on ash tree removal.

ash trees along trails, picnic groves and access areas must be taken down sooner rather than later, he said, with cracking and falling trees posing a threat to preserve users.

“The approach of trying to deal with it quickly and efficiently as it’s happening is better for us in the long run,” Schultz said.

Tree mortality in Will County should reach its peak in 2015 and gradually decline over the next five years, Schultz said, with beetle infestation shifting southwest from southern Cook County – an area that’s experienced a high ash three mortality rates in recent years.

While the infestation is widespread, areas hit the hardest include some of the district’s older preserves, developed around the early 1990s and have a higher percentage of ash trees, Schultz said.

Joliet’s Rock Run, Isle a la Cache and Monee Reservoir are some examples. McKinley Woods in Channahon also is

among those targeted for tree removal within the district’s 22,000 acres.

The district’s Board of Commissioners earlier this month approved a $46.6 million budget for 2015, which includes money for the strategic replanting of trees in developed forest preserve access areas, picnic groves and trailheads.

The district awarded the Joliet-based HL Landscape company a $38,014 contract last month to replace some of the dead trees.

Some trails, trail segments and preserve access areas will need to be closed periodically during the removal process, Schultz said, but he doesn’t expect there to be much impact on trail users.

The ties that bind Joliet woman modeled love and strength for her family

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The homemade burlap runners across the tables at Kristina Kolasinski’s funeral luncheon featured her motto – “Love each other and stick together always.”

Kristina’s daughter, Beth Walker of Morris, made those runners in honor of the mother who created strong family ties among her children and grandchildren, and then gave that knot an extra tug before her death.

“She brought them in one by one and told them to respect their parents, work hard and love each other and to know that she was always proud of them,” Beth said.

“Even when she was sick and weak, she tried to make us laugh. … She showed us strength and how much she loved us.”

Kristina was nicknamed the “Polish Princess” because she reveled in her Polish heritage, said Susan Monson of Morris, another of Kristina’s daughters. Susan said her mother often verbally sparred with her best friend, who had an equal pride in her Irish heritage.

“She and Mrs. Gary are probably fighting in heaven,” Beth said.

But besides her frequent wearing of red and white clothes – the national colors of Poland – Kristina showed that Polish pride through the food she prepared – cabbage rolls, Polish sausage, dumplings, sauerkraut, borscht, pierogies and horseradish.

Susan recalled Kristina making pickles and wondered if Kristina had attempted Polish sausage from scratch because she owned a meat grinder. Just once, however, did Kristina make her own sauerkraut because the results were unsuccessful.

“The crockpot completely disintegrated because of the fermentation,” Susan said.

Kristina rejoiced in giving and she gave in many ways.

She literally gave the shirt off her back if someone admired it, Susan added.

When her children attended Immaculate Conception School in Morris, Kristina made and sold popcorn on Wednesdays, spurring a second nickname – Popcorn Lady. She also initiated a rummage sale, which she coordinated for 30 years, Susan said.

The proceeds helped the school and the remaining merchandise went to individuals in need, Beth said. During those 18 years when Kristina and her husband, Martin Kolasinski of Joliet, drove around the country in their motor home, Kristina always returned to run the sale, Beth added.

“My dad said those were the best 18 years of his life,” Susan said. “They spent every single moment together.”

Another of Kristina’s nicknames was “Bosco,” which the family translated as “boss” and “bossy.” Kristina certainly took charge during Martin’s lung cancer battle and then stoically accepted her lymphoma diagnosis on the day she and Martin learned he was in remission, Beth said.

Kristina’s strength continued during chemotherapy,

radiation and a stem cell transplant. During that time, Martin also had a “widow maker” heart attack and subsequent open heart surgery, Susan said. Kristina did so well with treatments, she even attended a family reunion in mid-July.

But the lymphoma fought back, hard.

During Kristina’s final night in the hospital, her family shared the room, with Martin sleeping in a recliner while holding her hand, Beth said. The next day, they brought Kristina home. Beth said that as Kristina passed through the doorway of her home, she said, “Let’s party.”

“We all had a glass of wine but she could not eat or drink anything,” Beth said, “so we splashed some wine on a bit of ice for her.”

Kristina was 70 when she died Oct. 31. Her daughters plan to live by the words on that table runner – love each other and stick together always, as it was their mother’s wish for them.

“She always said life was too short to hold a grudge,” Beth said.

Rotary presents 19 Paul Harris fellowships The Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club named 19 area people as Paul Harris Fellows on Friday night. That’s quite an accomplishment for a club of 24 members, Foundation Chairwoman Mary Ann Egger said.

The recognition is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary in 1905 with three business associates. The Fellow presentation was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation for contributions to humanitarian and educational programs of the Rotary Foundation.

Becoming a Paul Harris Fellow requires accumulating points via monetary contributions to programs such as Polio Plus, potable water, health care or shelter programs for people in need all over the world.

A club or an individual can earn points when they donate to international Rotary Foundation programs.

Channahon-Minooka Rotary President Jeff Wold challenged his club to make

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky more contributions to the foundation. He took the first step and made a full contribution to become a fellow, he said.

Once Wold declared his commitment, it didn’t take but minutes before about half the members raised their hands to contribute and commit themselves, he said.

The challenge to create more Paul Harris Fellows, and in turn raise money for Rotary Foundation projects, came from higher up. Worldwide district governors wanted to get local clubs to contribute a total of $500,000. The Rotary Foundation would then match the contributions to increase the power of helping others around the world.

After all was said and done, Rotary Clubs ended up donating a total of $2 million, said Wold.

Nineteen new Paul Harris

Fellows equates to $3,700 from the Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club. The three-to-one matching grant from Rotary Foundation means a lot of good can be done.

A portion of that money will also make its way back to the community, said Wold, to support local programs such as Minooka High School scholarships and the backpack program.

Wold said he was inspired by the work the Rotary Foundation does. Once the challenge was presented to club presidents, he took it.

“I thought a handful of club members would accept, so I was surprise so many took me up on it,” Wold said.

Making contributions to the foundation in another’s name is another way of becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.

Member Tom Srachta, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, made contributions in the names of six of his family members, including his grown children and grandchildren.

By Denise Freese Chrysler has introduced a newly redesigned mid-size sedan for 2015. It comes in four versions - 200LX, 200 Limited, 200S (Sport), and 200C. Although the streamlined aerodynamics contributing to the fresh, new look is obvious, there are many improvements that aren’t as instantly visible.

Chrysler has upgraded the interior materials, resulting in a quieter, more luxurious cabin.

Available upgrades include twotone treatments, premium cloth or leather seating, satin or warm chrome trim, and gloss black accents. The C version, the most luxurious, offers real, open-pore wood trim.

From a mechanical standpoint, both the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and the 3.6-liter V-6 engines are more powerful than before.

The EPA estimates 22 to 28 mpg in combined driving. Some versions also offer All-Wheel-Drive (AWD), for easier driving in bad weather. “A great feature to have with winter weather upon

us” states Jim Kinney at Tyson Motors.

New features standard on all versions is the Keyless Enter and Go System with push-button start. Optional enhancements include a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, and ParkSense Park Assist. The 200C offers Lane Sense Lane Departure warning, rain-sensing wipers, and full-speed forward collision warning.

The UConnect touchscreen is offered in two sizes; the 5.0 version offers Bluetooth, while the 8.4, the largest screen available in its class, provides internet radio and mobile Wi-Fi hot spot capability, among other features.

Safety improvements added are eight standard air bags include six for front seat occupants, and two side-curtain extensions for backseat passengers.

Vehicle crashes into Are you Joliet gas station JOLIET – A car crashed through the wall of a gas station Saturday night.

Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said the incident occurred at 7:56 p.m. at Mickey’s, 1415 Plainfield Road.

The 65-year-old woman in the white 2007 Chevrolet Impala was not injured in the single-vehicle accident.

“She told [officers] she was trying to pull into a parking

He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Lois (nee Miller); his loving and caring children, Linda (John) Findlay of Minooka, Dr. Mark (Joanne) Bernhard of Batavia, Greg (Colleen) Bernhard of Manhattan, Bill (Mary) Bernhard, Gary (Lisa) Bernhard, Guy (Lynette) Bernhard, Joan (Brian) Long, Joy (Ray) Garza, Jean (Adam) Smith, Brian (Tammy) Bernhard, Doug (Kathy) Bernhard, and Carl (Joanne) Bernhard all of Elwood; his brother, Don (Phyllis) Bernhard of Monee; his sister, Mary Agnes (Don) McLaughlin of Manhattan; 57 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

Former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry dies at 78

By BEN NUCKOLS The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Former District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry, whose four terms were overshadowed by his 1990 arrest after being caught on videotape smoking crack cocaine, died Sunday morning. He was 78.

D.C. council spokeswoman LaToya Foster says he died

shortly after midnight Sunday at a hospital in Washington. He had battled kidney problems stemming from diabetes and high blood pressure and underwent a kidney transplant in February 2009.

Barry was first elected mayor in 1978 after building a political career as an official of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and a local activist in Washington.

Re-elected in 1982 and 1986, he was dubbed “Mayor For Life.”

“I want to take the boards off of houses and put people in them,” he said shortly after being sworn in in 1979. “I want to provide minimal care for all people, regardless of their financial situation. And I want to live out [Dr. Martin Luther] King’s legacy of peace, brotherhood and survival.”

Born in Chicago, living in Lockport since 1993. Joyce’s passion for Christmas brought joy and holiday spirit to thousands of people throughout the years. Her home was a showcase of her love for the season through the displays she and her husband Paul built together.

Erick loved all of his family very much. He was a wonderful son and brother. He cared deeply, loved much, and laughed a lot! He touched so many people’s lives from Minooka High School to the University of Illinois, to Capital One. Erick had many friends and cared deeply about everyone he knew.

He was kind, compassionate and loving. He lit up a room with his contagious smile, loved to joke around, and especially loved to come home to “torment” his sisters.

His sisters rarely left his side when he was home. He adored his cat, Lily, and took many selfies of the two of them.

We cannot express in words how Erick was such a loving, wonderful, caring and funny son! He will be extremely missed. He was an all around great guy.

CHARLES VAVRUS, SR. Charles (Charlie) Vavrus, Sr., age 84, entered eternal life on Sunday, June 29, 2014, with his loving family by his side.

Charlie was born in South Chicago Heights, IL, and graduated from Bloom Township High School. He attended the University of Illinois and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics.

Charlie served in the Korean War before starting his career in the Joliet area managing farms.

He became a land developer of single-family homes and apartments forming the Barr-Vavrus partnership with William Barr before venturing on his own as Vavrus and Associates. He developed, built, and managed over 8,000 apartment units in five states. With a strong commitment and passion for exercise and fitness, Charlie opened the first Charlie Club in Joliet in 1978. A pioneer in the practice and business of fitness, he ultimately opened and operated five more health clubs in Illinois and Texas. In the late 1970s Charlie branched into cattle ranching with the purchase of two large ranches in south Florida.

He retired on Singer Island in Palm Beach County where he enjoyed walking the Blue Heron Bridge and swimming in his pool.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 17 years, Judith Freund Vavrus (nee Freund); loving children Charles (Maureen) Vavrus, Jr. and Michele Krohn; cherished grandchildren, Charles, William, Elise, David, and Nathaniel Krohn, and Cullan, Colette, and Cayley Vavrus; dear brother, Gus (Hallie) Vavrus, dear sister, Emily (John) Zaber; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Nora (nee McGary); loving son, Douglas J. Giaudrone Jr. and daughter-in-law, Leslie Giaudrone (nee Galicia); and loving son, Dwayne (Kathy) Giaudrone; cherished grandchildren, Andrew R. (deceased), Adam, Eric, Michael, Matthew, and Megan; dear sister, Geri (the late Earl) Mack; dear brother, Peter (the late Donna) Giaudrone Jr.; two loving brothers-in- law, Earl Jr. “Muggs” and Don McGary; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceded in death by his parents, Peter Sr. and Marie (nee Wendell) Giaudrone; and cherished grandson, Andrew R. Giaudrone.

Doug graduated from Coal City High School in the Class of 1957. He recently celebrated his 50 year anniversary as a member with Laborers Union Local 75. He was superintendent of Public Works for the city of Crest Hill. Doug was also a member of the Chaney Monge school board.

As a student and young man Doug loved to play baseball and basketball.

He served proudly in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964. His hobbies included tending to his yard, visiting his neighbors, traveling with his friends Thelma and Jim, and simple things like watching the rain fall.

More important than any other part of his life were his cherished grandchildren. He attended all of their sporting events. Doug will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

A Celebration of Doug’s life will begin on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, with a visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Rd, Joliet, IL 60435, then driving in procession to St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at St. Mary Nativity Cemetery in Crest Hill.

Judge denies bid to halt Illinois fracking rules

ST. LOUIS – A judge in southwestern Illinois has denied a bid by a landowners group to suspend the state’s new rules for high-volume oil and gas drilling, ruling the plaintiffs failed to show they would suffer immediate harm if the practice commonly known as “fracking” was to go forward.

Madison County Circuit Judge Barbara Crowder rejected the request for a preliminary injunction Friday, three days after she heard arguments about the rules meant to regulate hydraulic fracturing.

Attorneys for the landowners had insisted the rules drafted by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and approved Nov. 6 by a legislative panel were procedurally flawed, among other things because the DNR allegedly didn’t consider scientific studies and had no representative available to answer questions at statewide public hearings last year. Attorneys for the state countered the public had sufficient input.

An attorney for the plaintiffs, Vito Mastrangelo, said Sunday that the landowners, including him, and the group Southern Illinoisans Against Fracturing Our Environment, would decide Monday whether to appeal Crowder’s decision or await further proceedings before her about the lawsuit.

Crowder’s ruling Friday dealt with merely whether the rules taking effect would cause “immediate” harm – a worry that a state attorney dismissed during the hearing as premature.

“We will pursue it, one way or another,” Mastrangelo said.

New Chicago Archbishop makes appointments

CHICAGO – Chicago’s newly installed Roman Catholic archbishop is announcing some key administrative appointments.

Archbishop Blase Cupich was installed Tuesday to replace outgoing Cardinal Francis George, who is retiring as he battles cancer.

Cupich’s office said the Rev. Ronald Hicks will serve as the archdiocese’s new vicar general starting in January. Hicks is a director of formation at the University of St. Mary of the Lake and Mundelein Seminary.

Cupich also named the Rev.

Kevin Birmingham as his administrative secretary. Birmingham is pastor of Maternity BVM Parish in Chicago.

Woman accused of attack using nail-studded board

DECATUR – A central Illinois woman is accused of hitting a woman on the head with a nail-bearing board during a dispute.

The Decatur Herald & Review reported 36-year-old Mary Kilcrease of Decatur in Macon County was arrested before dawn Thursday on a charge of aggravated battery.

The newspaper said Kilcrease is serving two years of probation after pleading guilty in August to an aggravated battery count related to an incident last December in which she stabbed the same woman in the face.

Kilcrease has 14 criminal con-

victions in Macon County since 2002 and has served four terms in prison.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 23.

Charges filed against man in accidental shooting

CHICAGO – Chicago police said charges have been filed against a 25-year-old man in Friday night’s fatal shooting in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood.

Paris Walker-Rush was charged with involuntary manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon on Saturday.

Walker was arrested in connection with the shooting of 24-year-old David Kennedy late Friday at an apartment.

Authorities said the two men were playing with a gun at the time of the shooting.

Kennedy, who was shot in the face, was one of three fatal

shootings Friday and Saturday in Chicago.

Man dies after being shot during Missouri hunt

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Authorities said a southwestern Illinois man died after being shot while on a hunting trip in northeastern Missouri.

Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards said 31-year-old James Funk of Mascoutah died Thursday in a Springfield hospital, three days after being shot in Missouri’s Knox County.

Edwards said the shooting appeared to have been accidental, although an investigation by the Missouri Department of Conservation continues.

The department’s Matt Wolken said Funk apparently was shot by a relative after the hunters chased a deer.

Anxieties mount as Ferguson waits on grand jury’s verdict

LIEB and ANDALE GROSS The Associated Press FERGUSON, Mo. – Despite preparations for a weekend decision in the Ferguson shooting case, the grand jurors apparently need more time to deliberate, and the uncertainty just seemed to feed the anxiety and speculation Sunday in a city already on edge.

More than 3½ months have passed since police Officer Darren Wilson, who is white, killed unarmed black 18-yearold Michael Brown after a confrontation in the middle of a street in the St. Louis suburb. The shooting triggered riots and looting, and police responded with armored vehicles and tear gas.

Many in the area thought a grand jury decision on whether to charge Wilson with a crime would be announced Sunday, based partly on a stepped-up police presence in the preceding days, including the setting up of barricades around the building where the panel was meeting.

The grand jurors met Friday but apparently didn’t reach a decision, and they widely were expected to reconvene on Monday, although there was no official confirmation of that.

During church services Sunday, some pastors encouraged their flocks not to fret.

A choir sang, “We need you Lord right now” at the predominantly black Greater Grace Church in Ferguson.

The pastor, Bishop L.O. Jones, referred to the pending grand jury decision briefly.

“Everybody stand to your feet and tell somebody, ‘Don’t be afraid. God is still in control,’ ” Jones said as church members repeated after him..

The Rev. Freddy Clark of Shalom Church in nearby Florissant told the mostly black interdenominational congregation that “justice will be served” whichever way the decision goes, because God will take care of it.

“None of us are pleased about what happened,” said parishioner James Tatum.

“Whatever the verdict is, we

have to understand that’s the verdict.”

As they wait, some people have continued daily protests, while speculation has grown that the delays are intentional.

“People feel like it’s been engineered, so that the results wouldn’t come out until after the election and until the weather got cold, and it would be more difficult to protest,” said Susan McGraugh, supervisor of the Criminal Defense Clinic at the Saint Louis University School of Law. “It’s really adding fuel to the fire.”

Wilson has remained out of public view since the shooting, although CNN reported Sunday that he has met with network anchors to discuss possible interviews. Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper, both of CNN, each said on Twitter that they had met with Wilson.

St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch had said he expected a grand jury decision by mid-to-late November. But that’s not ultimately in his control.

A must activity for kids growing up in Wilmington is to watch those big high school kids play football.

Along with that feeling of awe comes the dream that some day they themselves will play for the Wildcats in a state championship game.

Many a great Wilmington team has come and gone and fallen short of seeing the dream become reality. Because of Saturday’s 46-13 thumping of Byron in the Class 3A semifinals, however, this edition of the Wildcats will face Williamsville at 4 p.m. Friday in the Class 3A state title game at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Wilmington’s only other appearance in the state championship game came in 2003, when the Wildcats lost to Stillman Valley, 21-7. In fact, only three Wildcats teams have played in the semifinals.

The other was in 2002, when Immaculate Conception ended Wilmington’s run, 26-15.

“We know about the previous teams, about the 2003 team,” said Wilmington linebacker Joe Mann, whose picksix was among the highlights of Saturday’s victory. “It’s still talked about around here.

“The goal for us and for every Wilmington team is to win state. That’s what our goal is.

You know it doesn’t happen often. All you can do as a player is look at each game as it is in front of you. You always have confidence that you can win, but you never can look ahead.”

Alex Zlomie was one of the Wildcats on a mission Saturday. Earlier last week, he was named an Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Class 3A all-state defensive back. Against Byron, he not only excelled defensively, but he also caught five passes for 94 yards, including touchdown receptions of 33, 15 and 10 yards from quarterback Mason Southall. The 10-yarder was highlight-reel material.

PAEA’S PRESENCE FELT IN VICTORY

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – There are times Stephen Paea feels underappreciated – not by his Bears teammates, but instead, by the opposing offensive linemen Paea spends his Sunday afternoons trying to bypass on his way to the quarterback.

Paea isn’t surprised by the lack of attention, given the Pro Bowl-caliber defensive talent he has around him in Jared Allen, Willie Young and Jeremiah Ratliff. While the trio has been credited mainly with the pressure the Bears have put on opposing quarterbacks this season, Paea often takes a back seat.

“I’m pretty much the odd man out in there,” Paea said, smiling.

Not Sunday.

Paea was front and center during the Bears’ 21-13 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when he finished with three tackles and two of the Bears’ five sacks of Josh McCown. In addition, Paea got a hit on McCown that set up the first of McCown’s two interceptions.

Paea said the additions of Allen, Young and Ratliff last season have allowed him to draw more

one-on-one matchups while offensive linemen devote the bulk of their attention to more established pass-rushers. He said at times linemen have sometimes even looked away from him, suggesting they’re not expecting him to do anything.

That has only motivated Paea.

“I’ll take it – I’ll take the sack,” Paea said. “But I play with a chip on my shoulder, but at the same time, I can’t mess up. If I mess up with them, they’re going to yell at me. So I might as well do my job and do it to the best of my ability.”

Sunday’s effort was a big part of the Bears’ second-half turnaround when the offense turned back-to-back McCown turnovers into back-to-back Matt Forte touchdown runs.

Paea was constantly in the mix of the pressure McCown faced against his former team, helping lead to 21 consecutive Bears points.

Paea’s performance left quite the impression.

“Today, Paea was the tonesetter,” Ratliff said. “Everybody wants to be the tone-setter and the guy up front, and gameto-game, across the defensive front, that changes. Paea was

“His effort level was good today – he created some havoc inside among the other guys,” Trestman said. “It’s really the four guys, five guys, six guys working together in the pass rush. We got better at it today. We’re moving forward today, and I think that was a big part of creating those turnovers was the pressure we put on Josh.”

Paea believes Sunday’s performance can be one the Bears can build on heading into Thursday’s game in Detroit against the Lions.

As the defense showed against the Buccaneers, putting pressure on the quarterback can lead to good things. But with the Bears now at 5-6 and in need of several more wins to even be considered a playoff contender, the defense will have to play a major role.

Sunday’s showing, Paea said, was a step in the right direction.

the third quarter, trailing 10-0. This time, on third-and-goal, Cutler had time, scanned the field, moved the pocket before hitting Alshon Jeffery for a touchdown, finally getting the Bears on the board, and starting a run of 21 consecutive points.

With the Bears trailing by three in third quarter, a pair of reserves came up big.

Second-year defensive end David Bass, who has spent time on the practice squad this season, strip-sacked McCown, and undrafted rookie linebacker Christian Jones – in for the injured Lance Briggs – got the recovery.

Forte scored on the next play, giving the Bears the lead for good.

Before McCown was stopped short on a quarterback sneak late in the game – which led to a Lovie Smith challenge that cost the Bucs at least 30 to 40 seconds when they got the ball back – rookie Will Sutton stopped Charles Sims for no gain on third-and-1, setting up the fourth down play that essentially put the game away.

What now?

Record: 5-6 What it means: Another ugly game, another win over a last-place team. The Bears still have a glimmer of hope, sitting two games behind the NFC wild-card leaders.

What’s next: The Bears travel to Detroit to play on Thanksgiving Day for the first time in 10 years. They face a Lions team they trail by two games in the NFC North.

Seahawks throw, kick their way past Cardinals The ASSOCIATED PRESS SEATTLE – Russell Wilson found backup tight end Cooper Helfet for a 20-yard catchand-run touchdown late in the third quarter, Steven Hauschka kicked four field goals and the Seattle Seahawks handed the Arizona Cardinals their second loss of the season, 19-3, on Sunday.

Wilson was sacked a season-high seven times by Arizona’s ultra-aggressive defense and the assortment of blitzes they called to confuse and fluster the Seahawks quarterback.

But when Seattle (7-4) needed a scoring drive, after squandering advantageous field position throughout the game, Wilson delivered.

The victory was a must for Seattle if it had any hopes of getting back into the division race. The Seahawks entered the day trailing Arizona (92) by three games in the NFC West.

Arizona was held to a season-low 204 total yards.

BRONCOS 39, DOLPHINS 36:

DENVER – Peyton Manning threw three of his four TD passes to Demaryius Thomas and C.J. Anderson ran for 167 yards and the go-ahead score in the Denver Broncos’ win over the Miami Dolphins (6-5).

Anderson’s 6-yard run with 5:01 left gave the Broncos (8-3) their first lead of the game at 32-28. T.J. Ward’s 37-yard interception return of Ryan Tannehill’s pass set up Wes Welker’s insurance TD catch.

Manning became the third player in NFL history with touchdown passes in 50 consecutive games, joining Drew Brees (54) and Tom Brady (52).

He completed 28 of 35 passes for 257 yards and no interceptions.

BROWNS 26, FALCONS 24: ATLANTA – Brian Hoyer shook off three interceptions, leading the Cleveland Browns down the field in the final minute to set up Billy Cundiff’s 37-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Atlanta Falcons.

Taking advantage of the last of Hoyer’s picks, the Falcons (4-7) drove for Matt Bryant’s 53yard field goal with 44 seconds remaining to seize the lead.

and run and get to the rim as fast as possible.”

That means the Steelmen will be a fun watch, and perhaps realize some success.

“We have a lot of guys who battled for time last year when I think we were a pretty good team,” Corcoran said. “This team is ready to prove they can duplicate the success of last year’s squad but will be challenged every night with our schedule.

Providence could start slow but finish fast

Joliet Catholic, Morris, Lemont looking to enjoy some success this season

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com The success of the Providence Catholic football team this fall will have an effect on the Celtics’ basketball team, at least for the first month or so.

On the other hand, when coach Tim Trendel gains the services of Nate Vejvoda, Jake Rost, Miles Boykin and Anthony DiNardi when they are in basketball shape, the Celtics will be interesting.

We previewed area schools

in the Southwest Prairie Conference on Sunday. In another story in this edition, we are covering area schools in the SouthWest Suburban Blue and Red. Here, we take a look at large schools in the area, Providence included, that toil in other conferences.

Providence is a member of the Chicago Catholic League South, which Trendel said is “one of the best conferences in the state.”

“If we can keep our heads above water until our rein-

forcements show up, I think we can make a little noise in the league and in the conference tournament,” Trendel said.

The Celtics will compete in this week’s WJOL Thanksgiving Classic at University of St. Francis with Jack Brody, Tyler Pygon and Troy Howat the mainstays. All three will play college basketball.

“Once the entire roster is here, we will put lineups out there with five scoring threats,” Trendel said. “We

will be a big and long team with lots of experience. We should be able to rebound. We will be an unselfish team that plays well together.”

JOLIET CATHOLIC

When Joliet Catholic faces Romeoville at 7 p.m. Monday at JCA in the WJOL Classic opening round, it will be the first opportunity to see the Hilltoppers since their run to the Class 3A sectional final in March.

JCA returns 6-foot junior

Jalen Jackson, who coach Joe Gura says could be the top point guard in the area, along with juniors and returning starters Harold Davis, Drake Fellows and Luke Mander.

Jackson averaged 15 points as a sophomore. Davis averaged nine points and five rebounds last season and is the team’s best defender. Fellows, the baseball pitcher with the big-time fastball, averaged nine points, eight rebounds

Prentiss Nixon may be one of the best guards in Illinois. He has signed with Colorado State.

Julian Torres, the man mountain at 6-foot-9, 240 pounds, has played for the U-18 Puerto Rican national team. He signed with Wisconsin-Green Bay. The stock of senior guard Brodric Thomas rose in the offseason.

It is no wonder that as the boys basketball season gets underway, every coach in the SouthWest Suburban Blue speaks of Bolingbrook as one of the teams to beat.

It often is that way, of course. The Raiders have won 20-plus games the past three seasons under coach Rob Brost.

“I like our team,” Brost said. “Our strength will be our backcourt led by Prentiss and Brodric. If we play smart and play together, I think we have a chance to be a very good basketball team by the end of the season.”

Brost said Bolingbrook is not as deep as it had been the past two years, and the Raiders don’t have the overall size they had in the past. Still, they pencil is as one of the best teams in the Joliet area.

Homewood-Flossmoor generally is considered the most serious challenger in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, but Joliet Central and Joliet West also have the material to make things interesting for the Raiders or anyone else on a given night.

Central has only two part-time starters returning in point guard Jerry Gillespie and Kenyon Woodfork, the

DiForti added that the Tigers at times will lack height, depending on who is in the game at a given time, and they must overcome the inconsistency of sophomores at the beginning of the season. Once the calendar flips to 2015, however, West could be on the upswing.

The other area schools in the SWS Blue, Lockport and Lincoln-Way East, are hoping to make a first-division run.

The Porters return guards Ralph Blakney and Deiondre Taylor and forward Gehrig Hollatz. Center Anthony Gybauskas also is a key figure.

Coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. said Lockport’s strengths will be team play and shooting, while rebounding and lack of athleticism could be shortcomings.

“We hope to have a very hard-working team that relies on each other to be successful on both ends of the floor,” Thompson said.

Several bridge magazines come out monthly, containing information about the tournament world, instructive articles, quizzes, and bidding deals and problems that you may attempt, then compare your actions with those of experts. They are a great value for the money.

In the United States, if you join the American Contract Bridge League (acbl.org), you automatically receive the Bridge Bulletin. Today’s deal was provided by Eddie Kantar. What do you think of the bidding? Against six spades doubled, West leads the club ace, dropping his partner’s king, and shifts to the heart queen. How should South continue?

In the auction, when North raised to five spades, South was right to bid six spades. He probably needed only the spade queen in the dummy to be laydown for the contract. East then misjudged badly.

First, his double gave away the position of the spade queen; second, seven hearts doubled costs only 500 – less than game by the opponents.

Declarer needs to play trumps without loss, which will require taking two finesses through East if they are 4-0. To gain two dummy entries, South must trump both of his high hearts.

So, he ruffs with the spade two at trick two and plays a trump to his jack.

When West discards a club (playing black on black in case declarer isn’t paying attention), South ruffs his heart ace in the dummy, plays a spade to his 10, draws trumps and claims.

Powerful medicines can slow joint damage for RA sufferers Dear Doctor K: I have rheumatoid arthritis. Can you explain what is happening in my body to cause such uncomfortable symptoms?

Dear Reader: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic (long-term) disease. It causes painful and sometimes disabling inflammation of the joints. RA can also affect other tissues in the body, such as the skin, eyes, lungs and blood vessels.

RA is an autoimmune disease. That means the immune system mistakenly identifies normal, healthy cells as dangerous and attempts to destroy them. Why does this happen? Do the normal, healthy cells somehow “look” foreign to the immune system? Or is there something in the normal cells, like a virus that hasn’t yet been discovered, that attracts the attention of the immune system?

There are a lot of scientists trying to figure that out.

In RA, the immune system targets synovial joints, the movable joints found in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, hips, knees, ankles and toes. In these joints, a protective layer of cartilage covers the ends of the bones where they meet.

The joints take their name from the synovium, a membrane that lines the joint.

The synovium produces synovial fluid, a thick, sticky, yellowish liquid.

It lubricates the joint and minimizes friction. It also forms a seal that allows neighboring bones to slide freely against each other without pulling apart.

RA occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium.

The attacking cells release inflammatory chemicals that increase blood flow to the site. They direct an army of white blood cells, germ-fighters and other substances into the invaded tissue. White blood cells produce intense inflammation.

In response to the inflammation, synovial cells also begin to multiply.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff This causes the normally smooth synovium to form a rough, grainy tissue called pannus. The pannus grows into the previously empty space in the joint.

In addition, synovial cells and other cells produce chemicals that eat away at the cartilage in the joint.

Together, the pannus and the inflammatory chemicals badly damage the joint. If the tendons become inflamed, they may shorten and prevent the joint from bending. If the tendons rupture, the joint may become loose or floppy. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

In a normal immune system response, inflammation subsides when the threat is removed. But in RA, the immune response is not normal; it continues indefinitely. This prolonged inflammation can be devastating. The result is swelling, redness, heat and pain in the joints.

Ultimately, the joints can be so badly damaged that they become deformed.

People with RA can have great difficulty walking, bending, lifting or using their hands.

As RA progresses, it can limit a person’s ability to carry out normal daily activities such as dressing, bathing and walking.

However, with medications, good self-care and, if necessary, surgery, most people with RA can avoid disability. In the past decade, research has led to powerful new medicines that prevent the slow destruction of the joints in many people with RA. Dear Abby: I was recently fired from my job for chronic tardiness. I have worked at this business for four years, and although I knew my lateness was seen as a problem by my boss, it was still a surprise.

Now that I’m back in the job market again, I’m wondering if I need to mention my previous tardiness on employment applications. I asked my mother, who has been privy to this whole mess. She thinks I should mention it and explain that I have learned my lesson – especially when applying to a different branch of my former company that would have direct access to my evaluations.

I think I should explain my tardiness as a “lesson learned” on job interviews when/if it comes up, not on applications where I am trying to put my best foot forward. What say you? –

PETITIONER(s): Holladay Properties PROPERTIES: 1093 Windham Parkway PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT, the Planning & Zoning Commission of the Village of Romeoville, Will County, Illinois, (the “Village”) will be holding a PUBLIC HEARING in the Village Hall Board Room at 1050 W. Romeo Road, on December 9, 2014 at 7:00 PM or soon thereafter on the aforementioned date(s) for the purposes of considering testimony and other evidence on the following application for a Special Use Permit for a Planned Unit Development which Holladay Properties has filed an application on or about September 9, 2014 with the Village of Romeoville, in accordance with the requirements described by the Romeoville Code of Ordinances, as amended, which governs such applications.

The application request, if approved, would allow for a Special Use Permit for a Planned Unit Development Final Development Plan for a Value Place hotel at 1093 Windham Parkway.

Documentation concerning this matter is available for public inspection in the Department of Community Development, 1050 W. Romeo Road, Romeoville, Illinois, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
