At the corner of North Holliday and East Baltimore Streets, in Baltimore, Maryland, stands a monument to the first gas street lamp in the United States. On the evening of June 11, 1816, Baltimore became the first American city to have gas lighting, and the Gas Light Company of Baltimore soon was recognized as the first gas company in the Western hemisphere.

The use of gas for lighting quickly spread to other cities around the country and was commonly used throughout the remainder of the 19th century. The first use of gas was manufactured from the process known as the gasification of coal, and the smoking chimneys and large round storage tanks of gas manufacturing plants become common sights as the century progressed.

If you lived inside a large city, regular coal gas could be piped to your home. But if you lived in the country, you had to make your own gas.

In the early 20th century, a new type of gas, know as acetylene, became widely used for illumination, including street lighting, railways, mines, automobiles and some homes.

In acetylene lamps, water was mixed with calcium carbide at a controlled rate and when ignited, created a brilliant white light, much brighter than with the other fuels available at the time.

By 1910, acetylene gas systems seemed to be the most widely used illumination system for rural, country homes.

By 1920, acetylene as a light source was being eclipsed by natural gas, electric light, and even batteries in many

Annual Thanksgiving meal held in Diamond to serve area communities

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – Area Girl and Boy Scouts darted about Sunday at Diamond Banquet Hall, cleaning up and delivering refreshments as music from the Coal City Footnotes drifted overhead as communities came together to eat, socialize and be thankful.

Connor Super, 11, of Coal City is with Boy Scout Troop 466. He and his troop have been on hand at the annual holiday meal to help for the past three years.

“I think it’s fun. I like helping out the community,” Connor said. “They always have a smile on their faces, and they say ‘thank you’ when you help them.”

He said helping others always is the right thing to do.

Elsie DeWald couldn’t agree more – and that’s why she works with a host of volunteers to cook hundreds of pounds of turkey, along with all the fixings, for the annual meal.

“We have over 150 volunteers working here, and we’re still cooking as we serve,” she said Sunday afternoon at the free Thanksgiving dinner put on for communities in the surrounding area.

The dinner started three years ago as a way to feed people in need, DeWald said. After the first year, organizers opened the event to anyone who wanted to come, and they continued to deliver to anyone who wouldn’t be able to come out.

By 1:30 p.m. Sunday, 400 dinners has been sent out to be delivered.

Megan Thayer, 13, of Coal City and a member of Girl Scout Troop 700, was one of the volunteers who along with her mother were out delivering meals.

“I like the look on people’s faces when they receive it,” she said. “I really like delivering the food.”

She said when they dropped food off at one home, the girl who answered the door went on and on about how thankful they were to get the food. That was the best part of the day for her.

At one table in the crowded dining hall at Diamond Banquet Hall, which is donated

to hold the event, Bonnie and Butch Chellino of Braidwood and Mary and Dan Smith of Gardner sat eating a meal they all agreed was delicious.

“It’s our first time here,” Bonnie Chellino said. “I will absolutely come back; they can cook for me anytime.”

ment as he ate the last bites of his pumpkin pie.

The two couples said they will be with family on Thanksgiving, but the added event to Thanksgiving week was nice – especially since they didn’t have to cook or clean up.

Mary Smith said in addition to her and her husband having their meal, another meal was delivered to her mother’s home in Coal City.

“My mom had one delivered to her,” Mary Smith said. “It’s icy out, and we don’t need her to fall going out.”

While the parking lot still had patches of ice, it didn’t keep hundreds of people from showing up.

DeWald said she was pleased with the turnout; organizers made enough food to feed 1,200 people, the number of people who showed up in 2014.

Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc was handing out sweet potatoes and a smile in the line for those dining in.

“I love this. I look forward to this day. It’s phenomenal,” Kernc said. “It shows the character of our entire region. It’s more than any one or two communities. It’s why people love to live here.”

Herald Angels campaign returns to help

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – One in 4 residents of Will County have reached out for help in some fashion to one of the 46 partner agencies the United Way of Will County supports, and numbers are on the rise – which makes the need for community involvement greater.

United Way of Will County President and CEO Mike Hennessy said he hears from the partner agencies that revenues are down by almost 10 percent, but the funds needed are 50 percent more because more people have come and asked for help.

Hennessy said donations to the United Way of Will County stay in the county and are allocated because of need of each individual agency, and said if residents help these groups, “I’m confident their donations will reach the greatest number of people with their support.”

The Herald-News during the holiday season collects donations from its readers, which all go to support the United Way’s partner agencies.

One agency under the United Way of Will County umbrella is Court Appointed Special Advocates of Will County, a nonprofit established in 1994.

CASA trains and facilitates volunteer advocates to

be judge-appointed Guardian Ad Litem to abused or neglected children in Will County. These volunteer advocates meet with the child and become his or her voice in court when the decision is made whether the child will stay or be removed from home.

“We want to stop the cycle of violence and get these children into a safe environment and a permanent home where they can heal from the turmoil,” CASA Executive Director Rita Facchina said.

Facchina said CASA needs volunteer advocates and financing.

“We need more volunteers.

Last year we helped 316 of the 500 children who were abused and neglected, which is 65 percent. Our goal is to help 100 percent of the children, but for every 40 volunteer advocates, we need a paid advocate supervisor, and that is where the finances come into play,” Facchina said.

Facchina explained that volunteer advocates benefit

Will County and the child. If there is not a CASA volunteer advocate, the courts appoint a public defender, which costs the county money. CASA requires the volunteer advocate to check on the child once a month at minimum, where the public defender has a oneper-year visit requirement.

CASA Director of Development Lori Caton was a former volunteer advocate and has witnessed the benefit of the program firsthand.

“One of the children I helped was sent to a psychiatric hospital for seven days and not one relative or parent came to visit. I went to see him and colored and just hung out with him to let him know I was here for him,” Caton said.

Last week alone, CASA took on 25 new children.

Caton said it takes about $1,000 annually per child to run the program. It runs on donations through the United Way of Will County, grants, fundraisers and corporate and personal donors.

Rialto monthlong fundraiser starts this week

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre’s new holiday fundraiser kicks off this week. ’Twas the Month Before Christmas ... at the Rialto! gets going at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday when bidding opens for 30 holiday wreaths that will be on display at the theater, 102 N. Chicago St. in Joliet.

That night will be the Joliet Area Hospice Community Lights of Love ceremony – not a Rialto event but one that is always held at the theater the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. ’Twas is a switch from the Festival of Trees fundraiser. Like Festival of Trees, it will feature a series of events along with the bidding on dec-

orated wreaths – instead of bidding on holiday trees.

“It’s going really well,” said Debbie Greene, interim development director at the Rialto. “Tickets are selling, and we’re getting lots of sponsorships.”

Friday will be a big day at the Rialto, along with the rest of downtown Joliet. The Light Up the Holidays Festival and Parade is that day, and the first event is the first of two Teddy Bear Teas held in the Rialto rotunda.

The Teddy Bear Tea, where children get teddy bears and visit with Santa amid the grandeur of the Rialto, is typically a sold-out event. There still are tickets for the 9:30 a.m. tea, Greene said Friday. But the 11:30 a.m. tea was sold out.

Another big event in the

coming weeks is Shake, Sparkle & Stir! on Dec. 9.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Greene said. “We will have lighting, and the whole entire rotunda is going to be blue.

There’s going to be a jazz band in the rotunda. On the stage of the Rialto will be a blues band.”

The stage will be set up like a blues bar, and a mixologist will mix drinks in the orchestra pit for distribution between performances.

Also as part of ’Twas, Tony Bennett will perform at the Rialto. The Dec. 6 performance is close to being sold out.

Lights of Love

The Lights of Love event Wednesday is an annual celebration of life held by Joliet Area Community Hospice.

This week at the Rialto ’Twas the Month Before Christmas – at the Rialto! begins with bidding on holiday wreaths commencing at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. Bids can be made online at biddingforgood.com.

The Joliet Area Community Hospice Lights of Love ceremony will be Wednesday. Doors open at 5 p.m. Ceremony starts at 6 p.m. For information, call 815-740-4104.

The Rialto will be part of the downtown Light Up the Holidays Festival and Parade. Teddy Bear Teas will be at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. The Dave Rudolph Christmas show will be at 1:30 p.m. “The Lego Movie” will be at 3:30 p.m. For information, visit www.rialtosquare.com.

“It’s a wonderful program just before the holidays for people to get together and celebrate the loved ones that they lost,” said Jacquelyn Bersano, director of development with Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Several hundred people attend Lights of Love, Bersano said

“This is one of those events that bring people together,” she said. “Everybody [has] lost someone. We cry together. We laugh. We listen to beautiful music.”

While the event is not part of the theater’s annual fundraiser, Bersano said, “The Rialto is a wonderful venue for this.”

Dedicated businessman, passionate artist Joliet man avidly pursued both

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Phyllis Anselmino of Joliet recalled the woman who shared how, when she was young and money was tight, her mother could go to Anselmino’s Fine Foods on Fourth Avenue in Joliet, take what she needed and simply pay later.

That was typical of Richard “Dick” Anselmino: A businessman who reinvented himself when he had to close the store his parents started, a visual and musical artist, and a friend to anyone who crossed his path.

Furthermore Dick, a lifelong Joliet resident, lived each of these roles fully and deeply.

“Dick was a people person,” Phyllis said. “He never met a stranger. As soon as he saw someone, he was a friend. … He was not a golfer or bowler or anything like that. He was a home guy. Family was his life, too.”

Smiling at the remembrance, Phyllis said Dick, when he was older, took his clarinet into the bathroom, shut the door and played. It was the same clarinet Dick played as part of the Joliet Township High School band.

Twice, Phyllis said, Dick

and that clarinet participated in presidential inauguration parades – Truman and Eisenhower, she said. As a biology student at Marquette University in Milwaukee, where Phyllis met her future husband, Dick, had considered going into medicine, she said.

But Dick felt his parents needed him at the store they opened in 1933. Besides, Dick loved that store, Phyllis said.

Even when the neighborhood changed, Dick continued to serve the community.

“He gave those kids a break,” said Don Laurich, Dick’s son-in-law, of Channahon. “He hired a lot of those kids and gave them a chance.”

Dick sold the best meat in town, Don said. One of the advantages of being married to Dick’s daughter Denise – especially when the couple entertained – was asking Dick to drop off rib eyes on the way home.

“Of course, there would not be a charge involved,” Don said.

Persistent robberies forced Dick to eventually close the store, Phyllis said, so Dick turned to real estate, working for Karges Realty for 25 years.

He kept meticulous records, Don said, including every single phone call he made,

business or personal.

“And he’d print them out, not just one copy, but several copies, just in case he needed more,” Don said.

Twenty years ago, Dick had a partial amputation due to Charcot arthropathy, or neuropathy in the foot and ankle, but that didn’t stop him.

“He got his prosthetic and he was off,” Phyllis said.

Dick continued working until last year. He and Phyllis traveled – to England and to Alaska – but Dick’s favorite place was Door County, where he worked with a designer to custom create a log cabin house, built with the wood from an old barn.

“I can remember going up there in the middle of winter and going from place to place and barn to barn,” Phyllis said. “He had to find the one that was old enough.”

But that didn’t fully satisfy Dick’s creative side. On the walls of that home hung his photography. He shot autumn leaves, sailboats, water scenes and sunsets.

“He’d go out on commercial fishing boats at 3 a.m. just to get pictures,” Don said.

Dick was 80 when he died Sept. 13.

In the ensuing years, the toy drive continued to grow and took on a life of its own.

Mark died in 2006 at age 18.

Before he died, he asked his mom to continue the toy drive as long as she could. She promised she would.

Throughout all these years, the toy drive has been run by a handful of people Sue Staehely calls her elves. They collected the toys, sorted, labeled and packed them. They personally delivered the toys, first to just Children’s Memorial Hospital

and later to U of I Comer Children’s Hospital and Presence St. Joseph in Joliet. Leftover toys were donated to other sick children or children in need.

As hard as it is for Sue to hang up her Santa hat, it’s time for her and the elves to have a holiday with their own families.

Schools and organizations all have been notified, but Sue wants to make sure everyone who has contributed over the years knows to look for other options – and there are many in the community.

Sue also wants to make sure everyone knows how truly grateful she has been for the support of Mark and his toy drive.

So while Mark’s toy drive has come to an end, the Make Your Mark Children’s Pediatric Cancer Foundation lives on.

Created three years after Mark died, the foundation has raised more than $1 million to fund research into childhood cancer and provide financial assistance to families of cancer patients; everything from rent and gas money to food certificates.

The foundation created a new pediatric radiation waiting room at Northwestern Hospital so children no longer have to travel to Lurie’s. It also funds a day camp for children with cancer as well as a back-

pack program with handheld games, coloring books and small toys for recently diagnosed children.

It’s the only foundation of its kind in a 100-mile area, serving people right here in Will, Grundy and Kendall counties.

Not having the toy drive is bittersweet, said Sue Staehely.

But she knows Mark is looking down from Heaven, shaking his head and wondering why it took so long before his mom decided to take a break.

After collecting and distributing toys to sick and needy children for nearly 15 years, the Mark Staehely toy drive has come to an end.

But it’s not the end of the dream Mark Staehely had of helping others – it’s just the beginning.

In 2000, Mark Staehely of Shorewood was a preteen with a form of cancer not many had heard of – neuroblastoma. As a patient at Children’s Memorial Hospital, now Lurie’s Children’s Hospital, Mark got his family and friends to collect toys for all the children on the oncology ward. Mark couldn’t bear to see one child not get a Christmas gift.

It was the first official Mark Staehely toy drive.

The second year, 1,000 toys and gifts were collected and

COAL CITY – Volunteers are needed in Coal City for continued cleanup efforts from the June 22 tornado.

The Rev. Mark Hughey with New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City is trying to gather at least 100 volunteers to come out Nov. 28 to pick up debris in a field at Spring and Reed roads.

“When you take a group of 20 people out to clean a field, they feel like it is going to take forever, so we are requesting for more people to join us,” he said.

The field had corn planted in it at the time of the tornado, and it wasn’t until the farmer started harvesting the corn that the amount of debris was discovered. Hughey said there are sections of the field that couldn’t be harvested, because of downed tree

branches and a portion of a roof.

Hughey said 95 percent of the cleanup is done but the church continues to receive requests for help. A few houses have been torn down and the group has at least one more house to go.

Coordinators also will need volunteers to help move contents of a shed into a storage pod.

While the corn field is the main concern at this time before the debris is covered in snow for the winter, Hughey hopes skilled tradespeople also will call to assist with more skilled jobs.

Cleaning the field now will allow the farmer to get back into the field at planting time next spring without the concern of debris left behind.

Hughey said anyone wishing to volunteer should call 815-634-8332 and leave his or her name and number.

EDWARD O. BERTAGNOLI Edward O. Bertagnoli, age 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 19, 2015, after a 10 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Edward had a great sense of humor that came to life when he was accompanied by his family and friends. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed college basketball and the Green Bay Packers. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Why Illinois budget deal is unlikely before 2016

By SARA BURNETT The Associated Press CHICAGO – Much attention is being focused on a Dec. 1 sit-down between Gov. Bruce Rauner and legislative leaders as Illinois approaches the five-month mark without a state budget.

But there are other dates approaching that may be far more important to hopes for a deal on a spending plan, since getting there has as much to do with political timing as getting everyone in the same room or agreeing on what and how much to fund.

For politicians, the calendar often dictates motivations. And considerations such as the primary election in March and whether they will face opposition could be as big a factor as anything in getting a deal before spring.

Among the tough votes lawmakers may have to cast are for a likely tax increase to help a close a revenue gap or for pieces of a pro-business agenda the Republican governor is pushing to weaken labor unions’ bargaining power.

Democrats say his proposals would hurt working families and shouldn’t factor into talks over how to close a multibillion-dollar budget hole; Rauner said they’re necessary to improve Illinois’ economy.

Next week’s meeting is expected to bring Rauner together with House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, both Democrats, and GOP leaders Rep. Jim Durkin and Sen. Christine Radogno for

the first time since the fiscal year began.

Here’s a look at other key dates in the budget battle:

NOV. 30: NOMINATING PETITION DEADLINE

One of the biggest calculations for legislators will be determining who will vote “yes” on a deal that could include unpopular items such as a tax increase.

Rauner’s roughly $20 million political fund and a new political action committee that says it has millions to spend against Democrats in the March primaries have added a new level of concern for candidates this year, even for lawmakers in what are considered “safe” Democratic or Republican districts.

While all seats in the Illinois House and about twothirds of state senate districts will be on the 2016 ballot, only some sitting lawmakers will face challenges come March.

Starting Monday, candidates may begin filing their nominating petitions with the state board of elections. The deadline to file is Nov. 30.

That’s important because it will give legislators up for re-election a sense of whether they can or should risk their political neck by taking a tough vote on a budget deal before the primary.

JAN. 1: SIMPLE MAJORITY

The Illinois Constitution says that after May 31, any bill approved by the Legislature requires a three-fifths vote in both chambers, rather than a simple majority, to take effect

prior to July 1 of the next year.

That means that if the Legislature wants to pass a budget before the end of 2015, it would take 71 “yes” votes in the House and 36 in the Senate. If they wait until January, they need 60 in the House and 30 in the Senate – a far easier threshold.

Rauner has said he’s “cautiously optimistic that maybe in January we’ll get something done.”

The rookie governor also has suggested it’s Democrats who are putting off a deal because they don’t want to take a “tough” vote. Asked about Rauner’s comments, Cullerton said the governor must have “misspoke.”

MARCH 15: PRIMARY ELECTION

It’s possible some lawmakers will want to wait until after the March 15 primary before casting a vote on a budget package. It’s also possible that the leaders still won’t have agreed on a plan by then.

Regardless, there will be even more pressure on lawmakers to get something done.

Among the issues expected to boil over into the 2016 session are universities and community colleges that may be forced to make drastic cuts, including not offering grants to students who need help paying tuition. And without help it’s been seeking from the state, Chicago Public Schools may have to lay off hundreds of teachers. The teachers union already has said it will be willing to strike.

He said just like after the tornado that hit his community June 22, this event shows what can happen when people, not governments, get together and help their neighbors.

Joseph Nurczyk, age 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 19, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Born March 16, 1924 and a lifelong resident of Joliet.

Preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Frances M. Nurczyk (nee Smigelski).

He was a son of the late Jacob and Frances Nurczyk (nee Malz).

Joseph was also preceded in death by his brothers, Frank, Steve, William, Chester “Ben”, and John; his sisters, Josephine (Frank) Swandak, and Helen (Dominic) Mussario.

Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph G. (Vicki Kaminskas) Nurczyk; his daughter, Barbara J. (Jake) Jacobs; brother, Stanley (Olga) Nurczyk; sister-in-law, Geraldine Nurczyk; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Joseph served in the U.S. Marines at Iwo Jima in 1945. He was a Marine Parachutist and a Purple Heart Veteran. Joseph was also a member of the Ironworkers Local #444 and their recording secretary for many years.

A Celebration of Joseph’s life will begin on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 with a visitation from 9:00 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Rd, Joliet, IL 60435.

BAMAKO, Mali – The assault on a luxury hotel in Mali’s capital that killed 19 people was a clear attempt to derail a fragile peace process meant to stabilize the country’s volatile north, a representative of northern separatist groups said Sunday.

Halting peace negotiations have been dragging on between the central government and northern separatist groups for more than two years in an effort to end the disputes that turned large sections of the country into a haven for radical Islamic militants.

The talks have shown some promise in recent months. The Radisson Blu hotel attacked by two gunmen on Friday was preparing to host a meeting on implementing the latest accords.

Obama warns against overreaction to attacks

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Trying to reassure a nation on edge, President Barack Obama said Sunday the Islamic State group “cannot strike a mortal blow” against the U.S., and he warned that overreacting to the Paris attacks would play into extremists’ hands. “We will destroy this terrorist organization,” he vowed.

Ending a trip to Asia, Obama implored Americans not to let the specter of terror cause them to compromise their values or change the way they live.

“We do not succumb to fear,” he said. “The most powerful tool we have to fight ISIL is to say that we’re not afraid, to not elevate them, to somehow buy into their fantasy that they’re doing something important,” Obama said, using an alternate acronym for the terrorist organization.

After the snow, Midwest gets deep freeze A deep freeze set in across the Midwest on Sunday with low temperatures forecast in the single digits and a few below zero, turning the season’s first major snow into ice that made some roads treacherous to travel.

Temperatures plunged behind a cold front that brought snow across much of the region Friday and Saturday.

The National Weather Service forecast 20 degrees or lower across six states from North Dakota to Illinois.

The weather service reported temperatures in the singleand low double-digits Sunday in northern Illinois, including Chicago, where residents were digging out of more than 11 inches of snow – the highest November total in 120 years in the city.

By RAF CASERT and FRANK JORDANS The Associated Press BRUSSELS – With hundreds of troops patrolling Brussels for a second day and authorities hunting one or more suspected militants, the Belgian government chose Sunday to keep the capital on the highest state of alert into the start of the workweek to prevent a Paris-style attack.

Citing a “serious and imminent” threat, Prime Minister Charles Michel announced that schools and universities in Brussels will be closed Monday, with the subway remaining shut down, preventing a return to normal in the city that is also home to the European Union’s main institutions.

“We fear an attack like in Paris, with several individuals, perhaps in several places,” Michel said after chairing a meeting of Belgium’s National Security Council.

While Brussels was kept on the highest of four alert levels, the rest of the country remains on a Level 3 alert, meaning an attack is “possible and likely.”

“Nobody is pleased with such a situation. Neither are we. But we have to take our responsibility,” Michel said.

A series of police raids in central Brussels ended late Sunday, a government official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the overall investigation was still ongoing.

The situation was tense Sunday night in the wider area around the Grand Place, with police out in force as several raids looking for suspects were carried out. At one point, security forces closed off streets and yelled at people to stay away.

It was still unclear what results the raids had yielded. Prosecutors scheduled a news conference for just after midnight.

Western leaders stepped

up the rhetoric against the Islamic State group, which has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Paris that killed 130 people and wounded hundreds more; the suicide bombings in Beirut that killed 43 people and injured more than 200; and the downing of the Russian jetliner carrying 224 people in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

All happened within the past month.

“We will not accept the idea that terrorist assaults on restaurants and theaters and hotels are the new normal, or that we are powerless to stop them,” President Barack Obama said in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said IS must be destroyed at all costs.

“We must annihilate Islamic State worldwide ... and we must destroy Islamic State on its own territory,” Le Drian said. “That’s the only possible direction.”

Bears’ slim margin for error shows vs. Denver The Bears’ 17-15 home loss Sunday to the Denver Broncos was a disappointment for some Bears fans, a cold shower for others and, for a significant portion of Bears Nation, a simple reminder of who these 2015 Bears really are.

At the end of the day, any NFL game is as close as the final score indicates, and in this one the Bears did in fact have a 2-point conversion attempt to tie the score and take it into overtime with 24 seconds remaining.

The glass-half-full folks would like to believe it’s another game the Bears let get away and should have won, as this same group would argue about

Then there are the quite possibly more realistic among you who know the final score is the final score, the Bears are the 4-6 team their record says they are but actually a little bit ahead of where almost everyone expected them to be right now, and this one against Denver perhaps shouldn’t have been quite as close as it was.

Both the Bears and the Broncos came into this game knowing they had the same formulas for victory.

Behind first-time starter at quarterback Brock Osweiler, Denver needed to dominate in the ground game, control the clock and protect the football.

Without their top two receivers, Pro Bowl running back and veteran safety, the Bears needed to do the exact same things to win.

The Broncos executed to perfection, and the Bears failed on all three counts.

Therein lies the clear difference in a playoff team and an also-ran.

Asked about the Bears’ defensive failures after the game, Shea McClellin had this curious response.

“I think we didn’t execute on

certain plays,” he said. “I think we – I don’t know – lost our minds for a second. Sometimes that happens. Sometimes we get confused. We have to clean that up.”

Actually, it sometimes happens to the Bears, but I’m hard-pressed to remember the last time it happened to Denver or any other playoff teams.

Jay Cutler was a bit more realistic about the Bears’ plight.

Ward was bothered by the closeness of the game, saying after the Broncos stuffed the Bears’ 2-point conversion attempt, “It was very relieving, because I don’t feel they got down there by honest measure. Lincoln-Way West a worthy state finalist VIEWS Dick Goss Earlier this football season, Lincoln-Way West coach Dave Ernst made the point that there can be value in losing game or two during the regular season.

“As long as you learn from it,” Ernst said Saturday after his Warriors had dominated Champaign Central, 42-14, in the Class 5A semifinal at the wind-chilled and snow-packed Champaign Centennial field.

West lost to Thornton, 35-28, in Week 5 and dropped a 28-21 overtime decision to Lincoln-Way North in Week 9.

Both, of course, were playoff teams that competed in Class 6A. However, after overcoming a sluggish start in the opening round of the 5A playoffs against Dunlap, the Warriors have been rolling. Their Round 2 victory was 31-7 over Troy Triad, and the quarterfinal win was 40-13 over Peoria.

None of the last three games, Champaign Central included, was any closer or more competitive than the final score suggests.

“The goal is always to play 14 games and win your last one,” Ernst said. “We’re in position to do that. I’m proud of the guys. I love their mentality.”

The Warriors didn’t win every regular-season game, but they have learned.

The state championship game, which will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, will not be easy by any means. But when you are on the big stage, you can’t expect anything but a high-quality opponent.

The Warriors will be facing Nazareth from the East Suburban Catholic Conference. The Roadrunners, who won the 6A title a year ago, ousted ESCC rival Joliet Catholic, 35-21, in the quarterfinals before blanking St. Laurence, 34-0, in the semifinals.

Regardless of the scheme, the Roadrunners’ Julian Love, one of the state’s top talents who is bound for Notre Dame, will be involved somewhere.

When you discuss highly effective, wide-open offenses, Nazareth is on the list.

Likewise, there are creative defensive alignments that are being employed these days in an attempt to combat the wide-open offenses.

Lincoln-Way West, on the other hand, is a throwback of sorts. The Warriors run superb tailback Gabe Montalvo early and often out of the eye formation, with occasional passes from quarterback Connor Lowman mixed in.

“What we do takes away some things other people are doing,” Ernst said. “We play a four-man front on defense, and we run the tailback.

That’s what works for us.”

In fact, therein lie the keys to Saturday’s game. If West’s offense can mount time-consuming drives and if its defense can continue producing a significant number of three-and-outs, perhaps the ultimate prize will belong to the Warriors in their first visit to the state finals.

“We’re playing the best football we have all year,” said West offensive right tackle Justin Witt, who is bound for North Carolina State.

“We’ve been running-clock

almost everyone now,” said offensive right guard Bryan Brokop, who will play at Nebraska. “When the pairings came out, we got in the right bracket, and we’ve been destroying everyone.”

West was sitting on the 5A/6A bubble until the night the playoff brackets were announced, and for most of the season, 6A perhaps seemed the more likely landing spot.

“I was hoping we would get in the south side of 5A,” Montalvo said. “When we did, we got really pumped up. Now we just want to keep it up.”

Nazareth will represent a giant step up in the competition level from what the Warriors have been facing in

the playoffs. Many observers were saying a couple of weeks ago that the winner of the Nazareth-JCA quarterfinal would go on to be the state champion.

However, the way Lincoln-Way West is executing now on both sides of the ball, the way the Warriors have learned from their experiences through 13 games, it would be a mistake to sell them short. They belong on the big stage.

As Ernst said, the goals are to play 14 games and win your last one.

One down, one to go.

“It was something I had done before,” he said. “Just getting comfortable with the guys and letting them get to know my pace of how I come out of the end zone, my speed and what-not and how to hold on to the blocks and stuff.”

Thompson said he didn’t have any jitters on the opening kickoff, which he returned 28 yards.

“I was just excited,” he said.

Or he may have been referring to one of the strangest stats I’ve ever seen in an NFL game: The Broncos

were flagged eight times for 118 yards, while the Bears were not penalized once.

The Broncos deserved most of the flags they got, the Bears deserved at least a few that were either picked up or not thrown, and the 118-yard advantage to the Bears clearly played a role

in keeping the game as close as it was.

Whether it was the officials’ or the players’ fault is in the eye of the beholder, but this much should be clear from this game.

The Bears’ four wins are against three losing teams and the .500 Chiefs, who just

won their fourth straight to get there.

Their six losses are to four winning teams, the .500 Seahawks and Detroit.

The Bears are well ahead of schedule or they couldn’t have hung with the Broncos the way they did, but they are not as talented as Denver

or the league’s other playoff-likely teams or talented enough to play them straight up and come out on top.

CHICAGO – For the third week in a row, the Bears had to come from behind. For the third consecutive game, the opposing offense moved the ball down the field with ease to go up, 7-0.

On Sunday, it was Brock Osweiler and the Broncos, who took the ball after a Bears three-and-out and went 74 yards in four plays, punctuated by Demaryius Thomas’ 48yard touchdown in their 17-15 win over the Bears.

“We have to start faster than that,” linebacker Shea McClellin said. “We haven’t done a very good job the last three or four weeks. I don’t know what it is. We just have to correct it. It’s that simple.”

On the touchdown, Osweiler found Thomas without a defender in sight in the middle of the field, and the wideout did the rest. Chris Prosinski, who started at safety for the injured Antrel Rolle, missed a

Newton throws 5 TDs in Panthers’ win over Redskins The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cam Newton threw a career-high five touchdowns passes, and the Carolina Panthers improved to 10-0 on the season with a 44-16 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

Newton completed 21 of 34 passes for 246 yards and threw TD passes to five different receivers as Carolina stretched its regular-season winning streak to 14 games, including eight straight at home.

The Panthers are the 16th team in the Super Bowl era to start 10-0. Of the previous 15, all made the playoffs and nine have advanced to the Super Bowl, with six winning it all.

When South opened one no-trump, showing 15-17 points, North knew the combined values were 32-34 points.

The magic number for six no-trump without a five-card suit or a 4-4 fit is 33. So North drove into slam via Gerber, which asked for aces. North’s alternative was to respond with a quantitative four no-trump. Here South, with a maximum 17 points, would have jumped to six no-trump.

South has 11 top tricks: one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and four clubs. He has two finesses, one in each major suit, that could produce a 12th winner. Declarer hopes to find West with the spade king or heart queen. (If East has both of those cards, the slam would be makable with a squeeze-endplay, but South would need X-ray vision.) Should declarer try spades or hearts first?

The rule is to take the finesse for the higher honor first. So, declarer should lead a spade toward dummy’s queen. Here, that works perfectly, but if East could take dummy’s queen with the king, the heart finesse would still be available.

Note, though, that if South takes a losing heart finesse first, he will fail, whoever holds the spade king.

promptly causes the brain to produce a pathologic form of tau protein (I’ll call it “bad tau”). This type of tau protein kills some brain cells and does so quite quickly following the injury.

Worse, this injury to some brain cells slowly leads to the death of nearby brain cells – which leads to the death of other nearby brain cells. In other words, a vicious cycle develops that leads to a spreading wave of dying brain cells.

Having pointed the finger at “bad tau,” the scientists experimented with ways to block its ability to kill brain cells. They created what is called a monoclonal antibody that recognizes and attaches itself to bad tau. To their delight, they found the antibody blocked the ability of bad tau to kill brain cells in the laboratory.

More remarkable, when they injected the antibody into living mice following TBI, it protected against the death of brain cells. In tests of memory and thinking, the mice treated with the antibody did far better than those not treated.

It has not yet been proven that TBI produces the same changes in the human brain. Nor do we know if the same type of antibody might protect humans suffering from TBI from permanent brain damage. But studies in mice often forecast what will be true in humans.

Only a few years after discovering CTE, we may have learned what causes it and even how to prevent it. Only through support of research can we solve medical problems.

Dear Dr. K: My kids play contact sports. After all the news about how repeated concussions might cause permanent brain damage, I’m worried. Do doctors understand why the brain damage occurs and how to prevent it?

Dear Reader: People have known for a long time that boxers could develop difficulty with thinking, remembering, balance and mood following the end of their careers. The term “punch-drunk” often was used. After all, they’re getting hit in the head constantly and are often knocked unconscious.

The revelation people in contact sports who suffer less frequent head injuries also can develop similar problems has surprised many people.

Indeed, the National Football League is supporting research – including here at Harvard – to find out what’s going on.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs in about 2.5 million people annually in the United States. Moderate to severe TBI – such as what occurs during war or in major auto accidents – can lead to permanent brain damage called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). That’s no surprise. What has been a surprise is repeated mild TBI (such as can occur in athletes) also can lead to CTE. When doctors look through a microscope at the brain of someone with CTE, they see something called “neurofibrillary tangles” scattered throughout the brain. These tangles also are seen in Alzheimer’s disease. However, they are not seen in the brains of people who recently have had TBI. The tangles are made up of tau protein (also seen in Alzheimer’s disease and some other dementias). Scientists who were studying the results of TBI in mice recently reported a potentially important result. They found TBI

Better mental health care may prevent future violence

Dear Abby: I have listened to our president and various candidates comment on gun control after the shooting at the college in Oregon. Do you remember the saying, “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people”? Gun control is not going to stop this.

What is needed (or at least would help) is more mental health care. It seems every time a person takes the notion to shoot others, someone says, “He was depressed.” Never during the 20 years I have battled depression have I ever wanted to shoot anyone. There have been times when the urge to shoot myself was almost overwhelming, but I never felt like shooting a bunch of strangers.
