NEW LENOX – Leaders of a key agriculture program that promotes soil and water conservation sounded the alarm Wednesday, saying its mission will continue to erode if a state budget deal isn’t reached soon.

“What the public needs to know is that we are one of the very few remaining entities protecting soil and water quality in the state of Illinois,” said Kim Mitchell, district manager for the Will-South Cook Soil and Water Conservation District, one of 97 districts with offices statewide.

After a drop in state-funded health insurance Sept. 30, districts across the state already are covering the costs of premiums for soil and water conservation workers, while some em-

ployees have left for other jobs.

The lack of a state budget sparked fears of consolidation and workforce reduction during a meeting Wednesday at the Will-South Cook district office in New Lenox. Representatives from 18 districts, including Grundy County’s Brooke Baker, attended.

District representatives mulled alternative funding sources at the meeting, while others urged a “call for action” to lawmakers and local farm bureaus.

Megan Andrews, a conservationist with Kane County’s Soil and Water Conservation District, said key leaders from the Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts (AISWCD) advised district staff this week that the governor’s office has indicated a need for districts to consolidate.

Andrews said she was told districts must craft a consolidation plan by year’s end or “we are not in the budget.”

“To be candid, we’re not getting any communication from our association, so we’re trying to thread everything together.

There’s confusion,” Andrews said.

Lee Bunting, with Livingston County’s district, said he recently reached out to the Illinois Farm Bureau to see whether the organization would support a new tax to fund SWCDs. “And we found out we did not have the support that we thought we had,” Bunting said.

“That’s basically it in a nutshell.”

He said the bureau has directed AISWCD to look at ways to consolidate districts.

Joliet turns over Jim McFarland envelopes and more to State’s Attorney

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet has taken the next step in its investigation of councilman Jim McFarland’s potential misuse of city envelopes.

The city formally requested Wednesday that the Will County State’s Attorney’s Of- Jim fice review ma- McFarland terials related to the matter and submitted the items.

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said the city waited until Wednesday, despite putting out a news release Nov. 2 indicating it was referring findings to the office, because envelopes were still being returned to the city as late as Monday.

In all, 23 envelopes from three separate mailings distributed by McFarland were submitted, Shanahan said.

They include a letter McFarland sent to residents of the Reedwood neighborhood informing them about a community meeting concerning a cellphone monopole planned for the area.

Shanahan said in a previous interview the city questioned the appropriateness of using city envelopes because the letter indicated the mailing was paid for by McFarland.

The two other mailings announced a Facebook page for lost pets McFarland started and a free breakfast he held for veterans.

City officials initially learned of the mailings when they came back to City Hall because addresses could not be found.

In addition to the envelopes, other related materials were submitted to the State’s Attorney’s Office, on which Shanahan declined to further elaborate.

Shanahan said the materials were submitted so the office could provide insight into whether McFarland’s use of the envelopes constituted a state or federal violation.

“We would cooperate in any investigation,” Shanahan said.

He declined to comment on whether the city’s investigation will continue.

Charles Pelkie, a spokesman for State’s Attorney James Glasgow, said the office would not take any immediate action, as there is a possibility the For-

est Preserve District of Will County may submit materials as well.

“We want to see the whole picture before we do anything else,” he said.

The district, where McFarland was an employee until Nov. 4, is investigating his use of a district postage machine.

Pelkie said that once the office has all relevant materials, it will review them and assess how to move forward.

The office, city and forest preserve district met informally in recent weeks, he said, but Wednesday was the first time items were officially submitted for review.

Forest Preserve District spokeswoman Cindy Cain said in an email Tuesday the district’s investigation was still underway and once it was complete any results would be forwarded to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

McFarland’s attorney, George Lenard, said Wednesday that he was not aware the city had submitted materials to the State’s Attorney’s Office, but said further action he might take on behalf of his client would be determined by how the office chooses to move forward.

Gov. Bruce Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly on Wednesday would not confirm any recent conversations between district leaders and Rauner’s office about consolidation.

But she did say Rauner is supportive of consolidation.

“This consolidation will allow them to continue providing services to citizens while driving a better value for the taxpayers,” Kelly said in an email.

GRADUATION FOR PRISON BARBER COLLEGE

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – After the speeches were finished, family members watched as the barbers went to the front of the auditorium to receive their certificates and shake hands.

Except for the prison guard perched above the stage with a shotgun in his hands, it was like most graduation ceremonies.

On Wednesday, 17 men became the first graduates of the Barber College at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill. While the prison has had

a barber shop for years, felons were prohibited from receiving a barber’s license until laws were changed in 2013. After 1,500 hours in the program, inmates are qualified to take the state board exam for barbers upon their release.

“There’s a long wait to get into this program,” one correctional officer said. “You can’t have any [discipline] tickets.”

To apply for the barber program, prisoners must have a diploma or GED, score well on reading and math tests, and interview with instructor Bobby Mattison. Violent and nonviolent offenders are accepted.

Mattison received standing ovations every time he approached the podium Wednesday and inmates were eager to praise their teacher’s dedication.

“He deserves all the credit,” said Anthony Thomas, a graduate who is serving 30 years for attempted murder.

“It’s encouraging to be a part of something where [we] can make changes in life and be useful.”

We want this to be your last time here,” Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti told the graduates.

Prisoners get one or two haircuts a month, which are free. The barbers are not tipped. The equipment inventory is monitored by guards.

Prison barbers are not allowed razors, but have mockups for instructive purposes.

Besides styles, barbers learned shop management and studied hair-coloring, sanitary practices and other techniques.

“We had to learn how to do facials. Please don’t ask me whose face we had to practice on,” joked Howard Keller, who’s serving 55 years for murder.

Nikita Mattison said her husband’s students were the most eager she’s encountered in her years as a hair care instructor.

“You made me step up my game. You had some tough questions,” she said. Nikita Mattison quickly asked the crowd “what level” her hair was colored at, and the graduates immediately shouted back the correct answer.

Prisoners recently accepted into the barber program also attended Wednesday’s ceremony.

Mattison made sure his students learned the history of barbering and the importance of “shop talk,” and said they will continue to use

those skills whether they remain in prison or when they are released. He said he tries to teach all the students anything worth doing is worth doing well.

“I was 16 when I came to jail [the first time]. I’m 30 now,”

said Josh Minniti, a graduate who is serving 61 years for murder. “I’ve learned a skill that will let me take care of myself and my family in a way that’s respectable. This is my first time actually graduating.”

D-89 plans to fund building work with levy

Board hears sample resolution on highway project

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Fairmont School District 89 officials are recommending they earmark funds in a proposed tax levy to pay for facility repairs and improvements that will cost about $3.7 million.

At Wednesday’s board meeting, David Holm, interim business manager, said to the Board of Education that at the last meeting there was a facility assessment report that suggested District 89 has about $3.7 million worth of building repairs needed over the next five to 10 years.

District officials are proposing this year’s tax levy at about $2.9 million, which is roughly 3.9 percent higher than last year’s tax extension of $2.8 million. Holm said the district will receive less than what it is requesting because of state tax cap legislation.

A levy hearing will be held at the Dec. 16 board meeting.

The board also will consider adopting the levy at the meeting.

The funding for building improvements will be earmarked through a leasing of facilities and life-safety levies, Holm said. It will not be a tax increase, he said.

Board member Joseph Dalpiaz asked if there would be a “long-range plan” on financing and scheduling of projects for that work. Holm said it was something he was working on.

Dalpiaz also asked if facility needs could be financed by selling bonds. Holm said it was possible but that would require a referendum.

Holm said that because the district will have roughly $100,000 a year in levies for building improvements, it will need to come up with funding from other sources, such as a portion of the operations and maintenance fund.

“What we’re suggesting today at this point and time is see what we can get done within our existing tax levy,” Holm said.

The Energizing Student Potential grant awarded to about a dozen elementary schools throughout the state will give Hermansen $750 to support a science, technology, engineering and math – or STEM – challenge project.

The school also is receiv-

ing $3,000 worth of hands-on kits to build a curriculum focusing on energy.

“This is going to put a lot of the leadership in students’ hands,” said fifth-grade teacher Tim Fogt, who applied for the grant.

Fogt said the grant will give students the resources to prepare for a large energy fair in the community, where they will be teaching friends, parents and the public about renewable and nonrenewable energy, environmental issues, and other uses and forms of energy.

Board members heard a sample resolution from Superintendent Sonya Whitaker that expressed opposition the plan to build a highway linking Caton Farm and Bruce roads to a new bridge over the Des Plaines River.

Whitaker read from the resolution that board members determined Will County engineers and others involved in the project have “failed to give adequate consideration to the safety of the students” getting to school or its impact on the Fairmont community.

“The board cannot support and opposes the project in its entirety if concerns summarized in this resolution are not addressed,” Whitaker read.

The board will consider approving the resolution at a December meeting.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Filming for the Fox TV series “Empire” took place Wednesday at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, and some of the crew enjoyed the sight of the location.

The filming followed a call last week for hundreds of extras to be shown in a concert scene for the drama series about a hip-hop music company named Empire Entertainment. The second season of the show has been airing since September, and the next episode will air Nov. 25.

Not much activity took place Wednesday outside the Rialto, as the cast and crews worked inside. The Herald-News was not allowed inside during the taping.

For the first part of Wednesday’s filming, 317 extras were used, said Jess Gisin, co-owner of 4 Star Casting of Chicago.

“It allows them to get their feet wet as extras,” Gisin said.

Gisin said the filming for Wednesday’s scene would be used for an episode that will air next spring.

Besides the Rialto, the crews also filmed two weeks ago at the old Joliet prison on Collins Street. Gisin has said

the filming there will be used for an episode that will be in the fall finale for “Empire” in December.

She said the Rialto is a “beautiful space,” and some of the crew Wednesday were impressed with the location.

“It fits right into our storyline,” said Michael Gianneschi, prop master.

He said filming was going great, although the Joliet location is a tough one, he said, because it’s “not around the corner.” Much of “Empire” is filmed in Chicago.

“We have to get everything we need before we leave the city,” he said.

Jennifer Salim, assistant costume designer, also was impressed with the location.

She said after coming to the theater and doing work with the crew, she took a moment to sit back and observe.

“I was noticing all the beauty and nuances of it,” she said.

MINOOKA – In a short meeting Tuesday, the Minooka Community High School Board of Education approved a tentative levy for 2015 of about $21.9 million, which is about $1.3 million higher than last year’s levy.

Even so, Chief School Business Official John Troy said, the tax rate is expected to remain almost identical to last year’s, at just under 2.54, as the equalized assessed valuation of property has risen this year by about 4.5 percent in Will County. Troy said he has not yet factored in EAV information from Grundy and Kendall counties.

The upward movement of the EAV is a welcome change in direction for the district, which saw a property valuation decline of 22.5 percent from fiscal 2012 to 2015.

The district will hold a public hearing on the levy at its next regular board meet-

ing, which is scheduled for Dec. 17.

The board on Tuesday also approved the district’s curriculum guide, which outlines several new courses for the 2016-17 school year, including Spanish 5, AP statistics, advanced guitar ensemble, AP psychology, specialty animal sciences, All Things Google and world cuisines.

Troy also reported that the roof of the central campus’s cafetorium still is leaking after repairs. A possibility, he said, is a problem with the embedded flashing, which will require more invasive repairs.

The board also congratulated the girls cross country team for placing first in Class 3A at the state competition earlier this month in Peoria.

It is the first time the team has placed first at state.

After a closed session, the board also approved resignations of teacher Linda Hicks and bus driver Larry Engel, as well as the employment of bus driver Kathleen Smith.

CHANNAHON – A tax increment financing district in Channahon has generated about $4.23 million for local taxing bodies this year while just over $1.86 million will go back to the gas plant the TIF was created for in the first place.

The TIF district – a public subsidy that shifts property-tax value increases from taxing bodies to companies for redevelopment purposes – was established in 1999 with the creation of Aux Sable Liquid Products, a gas plant.

The 160-acre TIF is more than halfway through its 23-

year lifespan, Village Administrator Thomas Durkin said during Wednesday’s meeting of the Joint Review Board, composed of the taxing bodies affected by the TIF agreement.

Under the agreement, Channahon guarantees the taxing bodies will receive 60 percent of tax revenue generated by the plant while the company gets the other 40 percent.

About $702,800 of 2014 tax revenue will go toward bond payments the village authorized for Aux Sable years ago, said Heather Wagonblott, finance director for the village.

CREST HILL – The Diocese of Joliet’s 46 elementary schools and one diocesan-sponsored high school have undergone a three-year accreditation process to align with the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools, also known as the National Catholic Standards, according to a diocese news release.

The National Catholic Standards give the Catholic community a common framework of Catholic identity and agreed-upon criteria for Catholic school excellence.

“Essential to the mission of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Joliet is a renewed Catholic culture that begins with authentically Catholic teaching,” the Rev. Dr. John Belmonte, superintendent of Catholic

schools for the diocese, said in the news release.

As part of the accreditation process, a group of Catholic school superintendents, administrators and educators from around the country spent three days evaluating the diocese school system.

The review team announced it will recommend accreditation for diocese schools through AdvancED, the world’s largest third-party school accrediting agency. The recommendation will be reviewed and acted on in December by the national AdvancED Accreditation Commission.

The school system had an overall score of 308.05 vs. the network average of 278.34.

After accreditation from the commission, the diocese Catholic Schools Office will submit a progress report in two years to ensure the system continues to improve.

Police nab suspected burglar

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet police officers assigned to burglary patrol reportedly got what they were after Tuesday.

“There’s been an increase in residential burglar- Jaime A. ies recently and Velez-Peak we’ve had officers assigned to a special detail [who] caught a guy in the act,” Chief Brian Benton said.

About 2:15 p.m., officers

were in the 1500 block of Mayfield Avenue when they saw a teal SUV that has been referenced in “several other burglary reports,” Benton said.

Jaime A. Velez-Peak, 41, got out of the car and “appeared to be casing houses,” Benton said. “Officers saw him go around to the rear of a residence and then heard glass breaking.”

Velez-Peak reportedly came to the back door a few minutes later with items from the house in his hands, but went back inside when he saw the plainclothes officers outside.

About 5 a.m., officers with the Will County Cooperative Po- Timothy lice Assistance Webb Team raided Timothy Webb’s residence in the 100 block of Pleasant Street.

CPAT Director Wayne Ladd said police seized 15 grams of marijuana during the search.

“The search warrant was the result of three recent handto-hand crack cocaine sales to undercover officers in Joliet,” Ladd said.

Webb, 35, was booked into the Will County Jail on charges of delivery of drugs.

Victor Gutierrez, 25, who also was in the house when police arrived, was arrested on outstanding warrants for domestic battery and driving with a suspended license.

Velez-Peak, of the 1000 block of Pearson Drive in Joliet, was booked into the Will County Jail on charges of residential burglary and vandalism. Benton said police are investigating if several items found in Velez-Peak’s car can be linked to other recent burglaries in Joliet and Crest Hill.

According to jail records, Will County Sheriff’s police arrested Velez-Peak on a theft charge in April.

Cop’s widow asking judge to unfreeze bank accounts

FOX LAKE – A hearing is scheduled Friday on a motion from Melodie Gliniewicz, the widow of Fox Lake police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz, asking for a judge to remove an order freeing her seized bank accounts during the ongoing investigation into the disgraced officer’s embezzlement.

Melodie Gliniewicz’s attorneys claim her accounts were frozen Nov. 6 without notice. She discovered her accounts were frozen three days later when she tried to buy gas, according to a news release from Kelleher & Buckley LLC. As a result, they claim she is unable to pay her mortgage, medical bills and family expenses.

The news release also included an affidavit from Lake County State’s Attorney investigator William Biang detailing the financial dealings at the center of the ongoing investigation.

In their affidavit, prosecutors

alleged Joseph and Melodie Gliniewicz exerted unauthorized control over Explorer funds.

But Melodie Gliniewicz’s defense attorneys claim the affidavit names the wrong bank account, and transactions do not show probable cause that she was involved in any money laundering.

A U.S. Bank account for Explorers took in deposits of more than $100,000 mainly from donations or parking lot detail payments, according to the affidavit. The account also included $26,800 in direct deposits from the village of Fox Lake, which Melodie Gliniewicz claimed were from her husband’s paychecks.

Lake County investigators have said they believed at least two other people were involved in the embezzlement.

AG: Chicago cops should release shooting video

CHICAGO – Illinois’ attorney general has asked Chicago police to release a video that allegedly shows an officer shooting a black teenager 16 times last year.

The request came ahead of a Thursday hearing where a judge was expected to decide whether to order police to release dash-

cam video of the October 2014 shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Police have said McDonald refused to drop a knife when officers confronted him while responding to a call about a person walking down a street with a knife.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office sent a letter to police this month saying they had “unsubstantiated” claims that releasing the footage to a journalist would hinder an investigation or deprive anyone of a fair trial. The letter said police had no legal right to withhold the video because another agency, the Independent Police Review Authority, was conducting the investigation.

The letter was released Wednesday by the law firm representing the freelance journalist, Brandon Smith, who filed a public records request seeking the video. Madigan’s spokeswoman, Annie Thompson, confirmed that the office sent the letter.

The Independent Maps coalition announced Monday that more than 400,000 Illinois residents have signed petitions to put the proposed state constitutional amendment on the 2016 general election ballot. State House and Senate districts are redrawn every 10 years, with the process essentially done by incumbent lawmakers.

Independent Maps chairman Dennis FitzSimons says maps are currently drawn “to discourage competition and protect incumbents.”

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reported the proposed amendment would create an 11-member commission to bypass politicians.

CHICAGO – Illinois groups that help Syrian refugees resettle are calling on Gov. Bruce Rauner to reverse his threat to temporarily stop accepting new Syrian refugees after the attacks in Paris.

Members of groups including RefugeeOne and the Heartland Alliance said Wednesday that they believe Rauner doesn’t have the authority to halt the federal resettlement program, and they want a welcoming atmosphere in Illinois. They say Rauner and other GOP governors’ similar decisions were made out of fear. They say refugee screening processes are vigorous.

DIANE M. CHILETZ BROOKE J. CHESNUL

Born: Dec. 4, 1992; in Chicago, IL Died: Nov. 15, 2015; in Ritchie, IL Brooke J. Chesnul, age 22, a resident of Wilmington, formerly of Plainfield, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, November 15, 2015 in Ritchie, Illinois, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born December 4, 1992 in Chicago.

Beloved daughter of Joseph L. and Deborah (nee Nasky) Chesnul; loving sister of Michael, Steven, Charles

Diane M. Chiletz (nee Kovach) On Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the age of 72, a precious soul was called home to rest in the light of the Lord following a courageous battle with cancer and COPD. Diane was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She married Dave W. Chiletz on August 5, 1967 and they spent 32 wonderful years together. Diane and Dave moved from Cleveland to Plymouth, Indiana in 1975 where Diane worked as a kindergarten aid at St. Michael’s School. They moved to Shorewood in September of 1984.

Diane worked at St. Jude School, St. Francis Academy in the dean’s office and at the Shorewood Water Department. She was hired as a records clerk for the Shorewood Police Department where she worked tirelessly for the next 22 years. She loved her job, not only because it allowed her to help people, but also because being around police officers made her feel closer to her brother, who was killed in the line of duty in 1984. She retired this April after a beautiful ceremony at the Shorewood Village Hall reflecting on her phenomenal years of service.

Diane was treasurer for the Shorewood COPS Organization since its inception and was a devoted member of Holy Family Church in Shorewood. There she met many friends who became her family.

Diane enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and after church dinners with her friends. She loved watching the game show network and playing slots with her husband.

Her love of music and life inspired everyone around her. Her beautiful smile will live on in the hearts of everyone who was blessed to know her. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her loving children, two sons, David Chiletz and Daryl (Dawn) Chiletz; and one daughter, Dawn Steczynski (Jason); two granddaughters, Claire Chiletz and Jaiden Chiletz; two grandsons, Tyler and Ryan Steczynski; as well as her precious furry baby, Dexter.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dave W. Chiletz; her brother, Patrolman Stephen M. Kovach; and her parents, Stephen and Anna Kovach.

Funeral Services for Diane M. Chiletz will be Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Roads, Joliet with Fr. Jack Welch officiating. As it was Diane’s request, cremation rites will be accorded following her funeral services.

Thomas was a life-long farmer in the Wilton Area. He also worked at Caterpillar from 1973 to 1994.

Jim retired from Caterpillar after 41 years of service.

He was an active member of the Downers Grove Sportsman’s Club and enjoyed shooting trap with his son and grandson at the club.

Jim spent many years as a student of the martial arts and held a first degree black belt.

He will be remembered most as a wonderful husband and father who cherished the time he spent attending all the grandchildren’s numerous activities.

Survivors include his wife, Lora Lee (Bain); children, Steve (Tracey) Duncan of Minooka, Sandi (Jerry) Anderson of Channahon; four grandchildren, McKenna, Bryce, Marlee and Breah; his brother, Paul Duncan of Channahon; and a nephew, Kevin Duncan of New York.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Martha Duncan.

Justin R. Chaloupka, age 22, late of Lockport, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home Tuesday, November 17, 2015. Born in Palos Park, living in Lockport for the past 18 years.

He had a love for cars and a passion for the Fast and Furious movie. Justin had a heart bigger than life, was always kind to everyone but most of all had a very strong love for his grandparents and family.

LARRY FAINT Larry Faint, age 67, of Peoria, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at UnityPoint Health-Methodist.

He was born June 22, 1948 in Clinton, Kentucky to the late Theodis Faint and Lillie Pearl White.

Larry was a retired Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War. He was a fun-loving jokester who enjoyed cooking and fishing. Larry also loved listening to music and watching old Westerns.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his wife, Stephanie Faint; five sons, Laron Davis, Adrian Davis and Terry (Ashley) Faint, all of Indiana, Kareem (Tanya) Tracy of Atlanta, GA, and Larry Drain, III of Peoria; five daughters, Lanita Nobles of Joliet, Shanrika Davis of Indiana, and Latasha Tracy, Shaunterious (Eric) Mosely and Cheynne Drain, all of Peoria; three brothers, Willie (Callie) Faint of Milwaukee, WI, Thomas (Jeanette) Faint of Elgin, and Marvin Faint of Joliet; two sisters, Lillie Bell and Theresa (Alan) Faint-Washington, both of Joliet; 30 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Don was born at home July 29, 1930 in Chesterton, Indiana.

Don decided to enlist in the Navy from 1951-1955 where he was stationed in both Japan and Korea. While in Japan, he was the player-manager of a U.S. Air Force baseball team.

After his enlistment, Don resided in Hammond, Indiana and later moved to Highland, Indiana. He was employed

by Cities Service Oil Co., before moving to People’s Energy in Elwood.

He retired in 1995. Don was a resident of New Lenox, since 1978.

Don loved all sports, but was an avid CUBS fan since childhood. Don was a member and former deacon at Ridgewood Baptist Church, Joliet, and anticipated eternity in heaven with his Lord.

After raid, fate of Paris attacks mastermind remains unclear The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAINT-DENIS, France – The hunt for the mastermind of last week’s attacks took a bloody turn Wednesday to a Paris suburb where a fierce gunbattle with police left at least two people dead and eight arrested. The fate of the alleged ringleader was unclear, with authorities saying he was not taken alive and they were trying to determine if he died in the raid.

Police launched the operation after receiving information from tapped phone calls, surveillance and tipoffs suggesting that 27-year-old Abdelhamid Abaaoud was holed up in an apartment in Paris’ Saint-Denis neighborhood.

Terrified residents awoke to gunfire and explosions as a SWAT team swooped in and “neutralized” what Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins called a “new team of terrorists” that

appeared ready for a new attack.

Molins said the identities of the dead still were being investigated, but neither Abaaoud nor another fugitive, Salah Abdeslam, was in custody.

The site of Wednesday’s raid is not far from the Stade de France soccer stadium; three suicide bombers blew themselves up outside the stadium during an international soccer game as part of the attacks last Friday that left 129 people dead and hundreds wounded.

Molins said police units including snipers threw grenades and fired 5,000 rounds in an hourlong gunbattle that began before dawn on Wednesday. The dead included a woman who was believed to have blown herself up with a suicide belt, although Molins said “this point needs to be verified by an analysis of the body and human remains.”

Lewis falls in overtime for first loss in a home opener since 2000

The Flyers came up with a huge late rally behind 6-foot9 freshman Frank Vukaj in Wednesday’s home opener at Neil Carey Arena and appeared to have the battle won.

However, Ferris State’s

Quentin Ruff swished a 30-foot shot at the buzzer to tie it at 65 and force overtime, and the Bulldogs went on to beat the Flyers, 83-72.

Lewis (2-1) had taken a 65-62 lead with 5 seconds left when Max Strus made two free throws, his only points of the second half after he kept the Flyers in the game in the first half with 20 points. The Flyers elected not to foul, and Ruff made them pay.

“That was my fault,” Lewis coach Scott Trost said. “We have fouled in that situation before, and we should have this time. But I just figured they had to go the length of the floor, just keep them in front of us and make them take a tough shot.”

After Ruff’s heroics, and with Vukaj having fouled out with 1:25 left in regulation, the momentum switched to Ferris State (3-0) once and for all.

“We started slow, and I wanted to help us get going,” Strus said of his first half, when he hit 8 of 13 shots to power the Flyers into a halftime tie at 33. “But I let the team down in the second half.

I have to step up and be more of a leader.

“Thank God we had Frank in the second half, or we might have lost by 30.”

maining in regulation to get Lewis back within 56-48. He also scored the next 12 Flyers’ points on a rebound, a dunk, a reverse layup and three inside buckets off teammates’ feeds.

Vukaj did not comment on the call for his fifth foul, but he was not happy when it was whistled. Ferris State’s big man, 6-9 Jared Stolicker, appeared to lower his shoulder into Vukaj, but the call went the other way.

“Frank had a fantastic second half,” Trost said. “He has played well every game. Hopefully, he and Delaney [Blaylock, also a freshman] will learn from this experience.

This is a whole other level for them.

“Frank did play well, but we need some other guys to play better.

They made it tough on Max [Strus] in the second half. They took him out of it. Teams are going to do that, and we will need more from some other guys.”

Strus finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists. In addition to Vukaj’s 16-point night, 6-7 post player Kyle Nelson totaled 14 points and 14 rebounds. But the Flyers were hurt badly by 20 turnovers.

Junior Trevor Schmidt starts in the defensive line; junior Josh Bohne sees action in the secondary; and the “name” player on the defensive side of the ball, linebacker/lineman Trey Telez, also is a junior.

Mix in the seniors who have been so outstanding – ends Dan Wainwright and Deven Reed, lineman Cortez Michalski, safety Cam Gavin and cornerback Cody Conry among them – and the secret to the defensive success is no secret at all.

Or, perhaps it comes from behind the scenes. Yes, West’s defensive coaching staff deserves to take a collective bow.

Luke Lokanc is the defensive coordinator; and his dad, Larry, assists. Mike Villa coaches the defensive backs, Mike Franta the defensive line, and Eric Doornkaat and Steve Bauer the linebackers.

“We have an excellent defensive staff,” Ernst said.

“You would be hard-pressed to find any better.

“Luke Lokanc does a great job putting it all together, and Larry Lokanc is the best. He’s been coaching high school football for 40 years. Mike Franta coached the defensive line at Lincoln-Way East when they were turning out

those Division I defensive linemen. Eric Doornkaat was an assistant at East, too.”

For yet another week, the West defense will face a potent ground attack. In Champaign Central’s wing-T scheme, Josh Parker, Brad Dee and Matt Brown have combined to rush for nearly 300 yards a game. Brown broke loose for 225 yards in last week’s 28-0 victory over previously unbeaten Washington.

“They have good team speed on offense,” Ernst said of the Maroons. “They are a lot like Bradley [West’s SouthWest Suburban Red rival, which also is alive in the playoffs] in how they play.

They play hard and run the ball. They do good things in the running game.”

It will be interesting to see how the weather affects Saturday’s game. There is a good chance of rain changing to snow in chilly Champaign, probably while the game is in progress.

West, of course, also has a strong running game featuring tailback Gabe Montalvo.

It may become a game where both teams rely on their strength even more than usual.

Before the high school football playoffs began, we discussed how important defense is in the postseason.

How often we have seen offensive machines with the gaudy offensive numbers get shut down by quality defenses? Sometimes, the conditions play into that, but usually it merely is a case of the defense winning the battle.

That brings us to Lincoln-Way West (10-2), the only semifinalist representing the Joliet area. The Warriors will play their Class 5A semifinal at 2 p.m. Saturday against Champaign Central (11-1) at the Champaign Centennial field.

After coach Dave Ernst’s team came alive in the second half to put away Dunlap, 3512, in the opening round, the Warriors have faced two opponents with those impressive offensive numbers.

The first was Troy Triad, whose triple-option attack featured 1,600-yard rusher Adam Nelson. He was limited to minus-1 yard in 10 carries as the visiting Warriors wrapped up a 31-7 victory.

Then it was on to the quarterfinals, where Peoria arrived in New Lenox averaging 47 points a game. The Lions mounted some offense, but not nearly enough, as West zoomed into the semifinals with a 40-13 victory.

So far on the playoff trail, the Warriors’ quickness on the defensive side of the ball has been in control.

“What our defense did last week to Peoria was huge,” Ernst said. “We have a bunch of tough guys over there who play hard.”

Even more impressive, the Warriors are dominating with a liberal dose of youth. Inside linebacker Ryan Robbins, outside linebacker Jake Price and cornerback Matt Murphy are sophomores. Junior linebacker Danny Allen is in his second year as a varsity starter.

Joliet Central bids for tournament three-peat

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Central’s height-challenged but quick boys basketball team has won the last two WJOL Thanksgiving Classics at the University of St. Francis Sullivan Center.

With what coach Jeff Corcoran has at his disposal this time around, there is no reason not to consider the Steelmen one of the teams to beat in next week’s 20th annual season-opening tournament.

“Things have not changed as far as the landscape goes,” Corcoran said. “We’re still small. The kids who will play significant minutes are still small and athletic.”

The Steelmen will open at 7 p.m. Monday against Rich East in a game that will be played at Joliet Central. That is the only game in the tournament, which concludes next Saturday, that will not be played at the Sullivan Center. Last season, Central beat Rich East in the championship game.

“We know what we will probably get from Rich East,” Corcoran said. “They go, go, go.

“Our guys would like to do that if we took off the reins. But this is Year 6 of our program.

We started at the bottom and worked our way up. The kids’ basketball IQ and our program IQ have grown. We’re able to adjust to different styles of play.”

In addition to Rich East, Plainfield Central and Romeoville join Joliet Central in Group A of the tournament.

Minooka, Lockport, Providence and Lemont are in Group B. Based on what teams have returning, Minooka figures to be one of the stronger teams in Group B. Each team will play Monday, Wednesday and Friday pool games, and the corresponding finishers from the two groups will square off in the Saturday finals.

Last season, Joliet Central finished 15-13 and suffered a heartbreaking loss to Bolingbrook in a regional final. “We were one basket away from being regional champs against a team that wound up third in the state,” Corcoran noted.

we were looking for,” Corcoran said. “With the point guard vacant, [sophomore] Cameron Blackmon is up with us and will get playing time.

“Cameron was with us in the summer, too. We won 30 games in the summer and had a stretch where we went 14-2.

We found out we can be a good

basketball team.”

Fuller played at 6-foot-1 last season and may be 6-2 now. But what he did around the basket for the Steelmen was worthy of someone much taller.

“Malik is the horse for us,” Corcoran said. “He is a quality leader. He quietly was a leader last year as a junior. The way he works, the hours he puts into the classroom, the weight room and on the court, it all makes him fun to coach. It’s nice to have a kid like that to coach.”

Whether Sims is the point

guard or an off guard, he will have his hands on the ball often.

“Taquan is the kind that we will go as he goes with the ball, and how he gets it distributed,” Corcoran said.

Grubbs is about 6-3 and plays long. Corcoran said he “had a good summer with us and in AAU ball. We hope he is ready to take the next step up.”

The Steelmen also will look for contributions from senior forward Treveon Ward, junior forward Marcellus Hornsby and senior guard Jalen Jones.

“They will fill some vacancies,” Corcoran said.

Corcoran said the Steelmen want to continue using their quickness to apply full-court pressure defensively.

“The plan is to play full-out defensively,” he said. “But we may be more selective with it. We may have to back down some. It depends on who our eighth, ninth and 10th guys are and how many significant minutes we get from them.”

If the Steelmen are to win their third straight WJOL Thanksgiving Classic, it is a virtual certainty their pressure defense will create offensive opportunities along the way.

LAKE FOREST – Another week of familiarity for the Bears’ coaching staff with an AFC West opponent means the same for Tracy Porter, who played for the Denver Broncos in 2012 and then the Raiders in 2013.

Although Porter admitted he doesn’t have nearly the intimate knowledge about Denver as Bears coach John Fox, offensive coordinator Adam Gase and other staff members who came to the Bears from Denver, he does know the Broncos’ top receiver pretty well – Demaryius Thomas.

“I remember every time I covered him,” Porter said after Wednesday’s practice. “He’s been the same guy from when I was there to the time I left. Talented guy. Runs good routes, can get open, strong guy. He’s

a very talented player.”

After covering Thomas in practice in ’12, Porter covered him in two Raiders-Broncos games in 2013. He talked about the keys to keeping Thomas – who has only one touchdown this season – in check.

“Stay tight in your coverage, and make it as difficult on him and the quarterback as possible,” he said. “There’s no magic potion you can put on to say, ‘This is what I’m going to do to stop him.’ You just have to be tight in coverage on him.”

McClellin gives ‘D’ a boost: Bears defensive coor-

dinator Vic Fangio heaped praise on Shea McClellin, who led the team in tackles and forced a turnover in Sunday’s 37-13 win over the St. Louis Rams, for his play as well as his recovery time.

“Shea’s a stud,” Fangio said. “That was a four- to sixweek injury, and he came back

right on the four-week mark.

A lot of guys are at the six- or seven-week mark, and he came right back as early as he could, and he went out there and played good and made his presence felt early with a big strip fumble.”

Just another game: In the public eye, Fox is doing his best to make it clear this game is no different.

“Yeah, it was a good run. I was there four years. I thank Mr. (Pat) Bowlen for the opportunity,” he said about Denver and its majority owner. “Now, my life’s changed, and I’m here. It’s a big game for both teams, I’m sure. I know it is for us; and like all games, we’re looking forward to it.”

Porter said if Fox felt any differently about the matchup, he’s not letting the players know.

“He wants every one. There are certain games on sched-

ules that, as a human being, you look a little bit more into.

Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t, but he hasn’t shown it to us in practice.”

Injury report: LB Pernell McPhee (knee) and WR Eddie Royal (knee) did not practice Wednesday. McPhee did not practice all last week before missing Sunday’s game. Royal has missed the past two weeks of practice.

The Bears listed WR Alshon Jeffery as limited with groin and shoulder injuries. Jeffery played 35 of the team’s 65 offensive snaps in Sunday’s win. RB Matt Forte (knee), C Hroniss Grasu (neck), LB Shea McClellin (knee) and S Antrel Rolle (ankle) also were limited.

DE DeMarcus Ware – who leads the Broncos with 6.5 sacks – did not practice, and Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said they do not expect him to play Sunday.

NEW YORK – The Cubs’ Jake Arrieta aced out Dodgers stars Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw for the NL Cy Young Award, while Houston lefty Dallas Keuchel won the AL honor Wednesday.

In what was expected to be a tighter three-person race, Arrieta got 17 first-place votes for 169 points from members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Greinke drew 10 firstplace votes and had 147 points. Kershaw had the other three firsts and 101 Dallas points.

Keuchel Arrieta led the majors in wins, going 22-6. He went 11-0 in his last 12 starts, pushing the Cubs into the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

The 29-year-old righty had a 1.77 ERA, struck out 236 and pitched a no-hitter.

Arrieta was the first Cubs pitcher to win the honor since Greg Maddux in 1992.

The Cubs won a major postseason award for the third straight day. Kris Bryant was the NL Rookie of the Year, and Joe Maddon was the NL Manager

of the Year.

The MVP awards will be announced Thursday.

Greinke posted a 1.66 ERA that was the lowest in the majors since Maddux in 1995. Greinke went 19-3, fanned 200 and had a scoreless streak of 45 2-3 innings.

Kershaw had won three of the previous four NL Cy Youngs. He struck out 301, the most in the majors since 2002, and went 16-7 with a 2.13 ERA for the NL West champions.

Keuchel got 22 first-place votes for 186 points. David Price drew eight firstplace votes and 143 points for his split season with Detroit and Toronto and Oakland’s Sonny Gray finished third.

Keuchel led the AL in wins, going 20-8 and helping Houston reach the playoffs for the first time since 2005.

The bearded 27-year-old with a dominant sinker and sharp slider had a 2.48 ERA and 216 strikeouts.

Price went 18-5 with a 2.45 ERA and 225 strikeouts. Traded from Detroit to Toronto in late July, he was a key reason the Blue Jays made their first playoff appearance since 1993.

Keuchel became the first Houston pitcher to win the Cy Young since Roger Clemens in 2004, and the first do it since the Astros joined the AL.

McIntosh’s 20 leads Northwestern past Fairfield The ASSOCIATED PRESS EVANSTON– Bryant McIntosh scored 20 points and Trey Demps added 14 and Northwestern beat Fairfield, 79-72, in a CBE Hall of Fame Classic game Wednesday night.

McIntosh’s acrobatic driving layup and free throw with 52 seconds remaining pushed the Wildcats lead to eight points after Fairfield had pulled within three after trailing by double digits earlier in the second half.

McIntosh was 8 of 13 from the field, and 6 of 8 from the line. Aaron Falzon scored 13 points and Alex Olah added 11 to round out Northwestern’s (2-0) balanced scoring attack.

Marcus Gilbert led Fairfield (0-3) with 18 points. Curtis Cobb had 13 points for the Stags.

Trailing 68-65, Fairfield had a chance to tie the game with 1:41 remaining but Tyler Nelson’s 3-point attempt rimmed out.

Northwestern pulled away from there, using late free throws to close out the victory.

Northwestern led, 3929, at halftime. The Wildcats, spurred by three early 3-point field goals by Falzon, led by as many as 13 points before Fairfield pulled to 29-24 with 3:29 left in the first half.

To the Editor: Do all school bus drivers have to be so inconsiderate to other drivers? I’m at a certain westside high school every morning dropping off my grandson. I’ve never gotten a break leaving the parking lot by a bus driver.

Luckily, I’m not in a hurry to go anywhere, but some parents I’m sure have to get to work. My point is once bus drivers have delivered the students, they don’t have to be in such a hurry to leave the parking lot.

Let a car or two go ahead of you. I’m sure other drivers would appreciate that.

We must elect better politicians

To the Editor: It becomes more obvious day after day that most of our elected state and federal members of Congress are doing little or nothing and need to be replaced.

We have the power to resolve this in two ways. First, bombard them with communications ordering them to work and work smart. Second, we can elect someone new.

A great many of our problems are economic. A business person knows how to solve business problems. A politician only knows how to work on their next election.

So let’s elect only businesspeople.

It’s shameful that our Illinois politicians don’t care enough to work hard enough to effect positive change. How about locking all the Illinois legislators along with the governor and his staff in one building and bring in food and water? No one can leave until they agree on a budget and reforms.

After a day or two, not only will they get tired and grimy, but it’s likely they’ll make a deal to allow our state and all of us to move in a positive direction.

It’s certainly worth a try.

A rabbi preaches religion of peace in Manhattan Meeting needs is the most productive “interfaith dialogue” in the world, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks said at a recent talk at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan. He was talking about all sorts of good works of charity and mercy, in speaking about his new book, “Not in God’s Name: Confronting Religious Violence.”

Speaking to a largely Jewish crowd, Sacks made clear that anti-Semitism has returned in Europe, calling it “a scandal. We have to stand up and protest this.” When he later talked about Christians being “massacred” in the world today, explaining that “the last Christian has been driven out of Mosul” in Iraq, women sitting near me audibly gasped, expressing both astonishment and outrage.

The warnings are as old as Genesis, Sacks said: “If we are not careful, religion can lead to violence.” He warns that we may be looking at the

possibility of two generations of war to come in the name of religion on account of ISIS at work in the world today.

And yet, “it makes no sense to say God’s love is a scarcity,” he said. “God doesn’t have to hate you to love me, to reject you to choose me,” he continued. “God loves us both.

God blesses us both.

“Look into the eyes of the other,” he encouraged. “Can I see the face of God in the face of a stranger? That is the monotheistic challenge.”

In our pluralistic society as well as on the world stage, everyone’s going to benefit from the children of Abraham standing up against murder, hate and division in the name of God. People of every faith, and no faith, will follow.

When Pope Francis was in the U.S. this fall, he prayed at Ground Zero in New York and said: “Together, we are called to say ‘no’ to every attempt to impose uniformity and ‘yes’ to a diversity accepted and reconciled. This can only happen if we uproot from our hearts all feelings of hatred, vengeance and resentment. ... Let us implore from on high the gift of commitment to the cause of peace. Peace in our homes, our families, our schools and our communities. Peace in all those places where war never seems to end. Peace for those faces which have known nothing but pain. Peace throughout this world which God has given us.”

Peace is not some saccharin Hallmark card wish or a utopian dream. It’s hard work.

Everyday work, holiday work and halls-of-power work.

As we work, Sacks says, the West needs to engage in a

recovery of ideals. He warns there will be more violence, more “barbaric crimes against humanity,” until we find our moral center again.

“Every time a movement like al-Qaida is defeated,” he said, “another will arise to take its place. Young people, in search of meaning, identity and community, will continue to be recruited to the cause.”

But while hate may breed hate, good can be contagious, too. Look forward, not back, as Sacks said he learned from Holocaust survivors.

“Build a life, a family, a future, a hope. Hate makes us slaves; therefore, let it go. Do not wage war on the children of darkness. Make sure instead that you and your children are sources of light.”

Spiritual journey through shape, color Joliet church offers annual iconography retreat Know more

Because the rector at St. Edward and Christ Episcopal Church in Joliet, the Rev. Kathryn White – an artist, contemplative, aspiring iconographer and cook at the iconography retreats – wants to offer people choices for spiritual growth.

And icons – also known as “windows into heaven” and “theology in image” – are more than pretty representational paintings.

This year’s retreats took place Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 and Nov. 7 to Nov. 14 at the Christ Campus on Grove Road in Joliet.

“I like to plug in different ways where people think about God and their relationship with God,” White said.

“Iconography creates the space where that conversation can happen between me and the divine. The goal is not the outcome; it’s the time spent in the discipline of writing it.”

Spirituality of iconography

Leading the retreats was Kathy Sievers of Elizabeth the Wonderworker Studio in the state of Oregon, who is experienced in creating icons and teaching others to do the same. Sievers said she has taught people from all types of backgrounds and explained their interest this way: “The Holy Spirit is – somehow – drawing them and uniting them in Jesus,” Sievers said. “Because no matter what the subject [of the icon] is, it’s always about Jesus.”

Iconography is not simply another form of religious art.

Sievers said religious art is naturalistic; an artist’s impression of the way a moment in time might have looked.

“Almost like taking a photograph,” she said.

Icons are about relationships, and art isn’t necessarily about relationships.”

With that in mind, Sievers said people don’t need an art background to paint icons.

She teaches them how to work with egg tempura, a challenging medium because each layer needs to dry and may not stay put when the next layer is added.

The Rev. Richard Lundgren, associate rector for St. Edward and Christ, said he has attended retreats all five years the church has offered them. Like Moore, Lundgren isn’t an artist, but Lundgren said he does work for a liturgical design company, which allows him to think in terms of sculpture, glass and color, he added.

Lundgren said the method of painting an icon from dark colors to light mirrors the spiritual process, especially when he adds a color on Jesus’ face and the face temporarily vanishes.

“For me, it’s like a spiritual journey,” he said. “Sometimes, he seems to disappear, but if you stay with it, the relationship gets re-established.”

PLAINFIELD – Make a Difference Day was held Oct. 17 at St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield. About 1,061 volunteers participated for eight hours on 72 projects.

Projects included New Life for Old Bags (making mats for the homeless) rosary-making, blood drive, Spanish rosary, adoration, St. Anne’s Sewing Circle (mending items for people), nursing home projects, convent projects, Helping Hearts and Hands

(doing odd jobs people not able to do those themselves), Ready Set Ride Barn cleaning, shelter dog-walking and kitten socialization, two sessions of Feed My Starving Children, folding laundry and various park district projects.

In addition, Boy Scouts prepared lunch for everyone, and Girl Scouts decorated tables with placemats they had made.

Tobias Smollett, an 18th-century Scottish poet, said, “Some folk are wise, and some are otherwise.”

Wise bridge players take care of losers and get the maximum value from their trumps. What would a sage South do here in six spades after West leads the club queen?

What were West’s more effective starts?

North’s three-club rebid was a double negative, warning of a very bad hand. Over three hearts, if North had given preference with three spades, it would have been nonforcing. Holding three-card support and a king, he jumped to four spades.

South should try to handle bad breaks in the majors, especially in hearts. Declarer needs to notice the power of dummy’s trumps.

He must ruff the club with a high trump, cash one high heart, then overtake the spade seven with dummy’s eight. Now South leads a heart toward his hand.

It cannot help East to ruff, so he discards a diamond. South wins and repeats the medicine. He overtakes his spade nine with dummy’s 10 and plays another heart. Again, East pitches. Now declarer wins, leads a fourth heart, and – knowing East can overruff the dummy – throws a diamond from dummy.

A moment later, South cashes his diamond ace, trumps his last diamond in the dummy, ruffs a club back to his hand, removes East’s remaining trump and claims.

As you will have wisely surmised, West would have beaten the contract if he had led his trump or a diamond – tough assignments.

evidence that dreaming (and, hence, sleeping) is important in memory and learning.

Now to your question. A truly remarkable study was published two years ago. To explain what was found, I first need to explain some concepts. Our brains are filled with billions of different kinds of cells.

Between those cells is space through which fluid passes.

It’s as if there are little rivers running through the brain.

The study was of mice, whose brains are not terribly different from ours in many respects. (Granted, their brains couldn’t come up with the theory of general relativity. But their brains are much better than ours at smelling cheese.) The study found that during sleep, the little rivers that run between brain cells increase greatly in size. As a result, many substances made by brain cells (including cell waste material) get flushed out of the brain much more efficiently.

For example, two molecules called beta-amyloid and tau are flushed out of the mouse brain more efficiently during sleep. These two molecules build up in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

So maybe your friend is right. One important purpose of sleep may be to clear potentially toxic material out of the brain.

And perhaps we feel restored in the morning for that reason. It is an arresting, and plausible, possibility.

Dear Dr. K: A friend told me the reason we sleep is to “flush out” our brain. What is this all about? Is this the reason we sleep?

Dear Reader: Many readers have written asking why we sleep, and we discussed it in yesterday’s column. Today, we will talk about the recent study you are asking about, which suggests one reason we sleep may be to flush out the brain.

For those who didn’t read yesterday’s column, a quick summary. There is evidence that during sleep, our mind and body benefit in several ways.

Perhaps most obvious, our muscles get a rest.

The fortunate exception is the special muscle that is our heart. We don’t want it to quit pumping – ever.

Do our other organs need a rest? Most of them keep working while we sleep.

But they all sustain some wear and tear from their work, during both the day and night. Therefore, they may need to repair certain injuries that have occurred during the day. During deepest sleep, hormones are released that stimulate tissue growth and muscle repair. And your immune system becomes primed to defend itself against infection the next day.

Does our brain need the rest? Brain waves are very active during sleep, but our brain is doing different things during sleep than when awake.

For example, it dreams.

Which raises the question of why we dream.

Sigmund Freud thought dreaming was our way of dealing with hidden conflicts, desires and fears.

He thought we needed to sleep because we needed to dream.

In the past 10 years, scientists here at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere have published a great deal of

Dear Abby: I loved the letter from “Ready For The Reunion” (July 31), who wondered why some people in her high school graduating class didn’t respond to the notice of the reunion. Some of us would like to completely forget high school and everything associated with it.

I missed my 10th, 20th, 30th and 40th year reunions.

I did consider going to the last one, but then I started reading my former classmates’ posts on the reunion website. It seems everyone is retired, wealthy, has numerous grandchildren, at least one retirement home in an exotic locale and spends their time relaxing and jetting around (or so they say). I’m still working, not wealthy, not particularly successful and have moved from my home state to the backwoods of middle America. Basically, I have a boring life, so I have nothing to brag about. I didn’t go.

I’m still in contact with the important people in my life from high school and just don’t need the aggravation of attending a reunion.
