lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For the second time this month, a group of residents have aired allegations to the Joliet City Council that a downtown liquor store employee threatened them and said racial slurs directed toward them.

At the Monday pre-council meeting, neighbors Felicia Martin and Rosie Tyler Lewis spoke of two incidents at the 83 W. Jefferson St. business during the past 15 months involving a store employee.

Bashir & Sons store owner Jack Bashir, also in attendance with his attorney Chris Rouskey, denied the allegations.

Rouskey said he believes the allegations are attempts to extort money from his client.

Martin said she was verbally “violated” at the store one day with Mary Brown-Jones, who complained of a similar experience to council members two weeks ago.

Martin said an employee told them to “be quiet or exit,”

and that they both “need to go back to Africa.” Martin said the person then spat in BrownJones’ face and pushed Martin in the back.

Lewis then told the council that an employee said racial slurs at her in August 2013.

“I called 9-1-1 and they wouldn’t do nothing about it,” Lewis said.

But Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said police officers who arrived on scene were unable to corroborate what happened because Lewis was intoxicated and difficult to understand.

Benton said police made multiple attempts to follow up with Lewis without success.

The clerk had a different story, so it became a “he said-she said” situation, according to Benton.

Charles Craig, another Joliet resident, and his parents, Charles and Clementine Titus, aired their concerns to the council earlier this month.

The couple went to the store Sept. 19 and gave a store clerk $50 to buy a $10 lottery ticket, but the employee wouldn’t

give them any change back, Charles Titus said at the Nov. 3 pre-council meeting.

“I stood around for my change. He never did want to give me my change back,” Charles Titus said Nov. 3, breaking down into tears. “So he gets mad and throws the change on the counter and said, ‘Now listen, all you [racial slur] come in acting like you own the joint. You [racial slur] should go back to where you came from.”

Benton said Monday the allegations are difficult to prove because police didn’t find out about the incident until Oct 16 when their son, Craig, filed a police report alleging a similar incident Sept. 27.

Bashir told The Herald-News on Monday that Craig came into the store while another clerk was working and “immediately ducked [out of sight] behind the cooler at the counter and didn’t pop up again until two other customers walked in behind him.’”

The man’s behavior worried his employee, Bashir said.

City Council finds commuter options ‘unacceptable’

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city’s civil engineer came under fire Tuesday night from City Council members for accessibility concerns surrounding the $1.5 million temporary commuter platform in use while a new transportation center is built.

Concerns were raised after Lisa Dorothy, who is overseeing several projects that make up Joliet’s transportation center project, told council members a major milestone in construction has been delayed six months.

That means the temporary Heritage Corridor platform – which lacks an elevator, escalator and protection from the elements – could be some commuters’ only option until mid-2016.

“It’s possible we can expedite, but not likely,” Dorothy

said.

At issue is the long ramp leading up to the boarding area, Dorothy said, noting, however, that riders need to understand use of the platform is only temporary.

“It is a very long phase, but it is temporary. That platform is the largest platform that could be built in the footprint that is available,” she said. “It is technically ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] compliant, but not convenient. [The ramp] is very long, and it’s daunting for a lot of residents.”

Councilwoman Jan Quillman said it’s “unacceptable” that the commuters will have to wait two years for a permanent structure with protection from the elements.

Budget and engineering constraints prevented such a protective structure from being built, Dorothy said after

the meeting.

The ramp was designed wide enough so that Amtrak’s planned “people movers” – or glorified golf carts, Dorothy said – could be utilized by those with disabilities. But that hasn’t happened yet, nor is there a timeline, she said.

Warming centers also were discussed. For some time, early morning Heritage Corridor riders have not had access to Amtrak’s warming center because it didn’t open until 7:30 a.m., Dorothy said. But Silver Cross Field will now provide a temporary warming center at the ballpark from 4:45 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. – when the Amtrak trailer opens.

Amtrak also is in negotiations with the state to hire an additional security staff member at the trailer, so the trailer could remain open past 3:30 p.m. as a warming center, she said.

“[Craig] left and we didn’t hear anything more until he started going around saying I threatened him,” Bashir said.

Craig said he “bent down” – not ducked – to look at merchandise. He added the employee had a gun on him and “doing things like that” could get him shot.

Bashir said Craig’s racial allegations are wrong.

“He’s lying. It’s absolutely untrue,” Bashir said. “We have no problem with African-Americans. My employee did not pull a gun on anyone.”

Craig said he doesn’t have any reason to lie about what happened that day.

Will County Court records show Bashir filed suit Friday seeking damages against Craig for his claims. A preliminary court date is scheduled for March. Complaints about the conduct of employees at the store have also been filed with the Illinois Human Rights Commission.

“Until [Monday] night,I hadn’t lost sleep over it, but I was awake. It was rough,” he said Tuesday.

Rough and close. The Democrat edged out Republican opponent Ken Kaupas by .002 percent of the vote, according to the final vote tally done Tuesday by the Will County Clerk’s Office.

“I’m feeling good now,” Kelley said after the final totals came in Tuesday.

It wasn’t just the votes in the Will County sheriff’s race being counted Tuesday, but that contest was the focus of the dozens of Democrats and Republicans watching the poll watchers and election judges at the Will County Building.

The process of counting 1,391 provisional ballots and 1,674 absentee ballots began at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Kaupas and Kelley were both already in attendance, each wearing dark suits with light blue shirts. Kaupas opted for a dark blue tie, Kelley for a lighter blue.

“It was a hard-fought race,” Kaupas said while Kelley shook his hand and nodded in agreement as the counts began.

Kelley edged Kaupas out by 471 votes, with 190,783 ballots cast in the race. Kaupas was ahead of Kelley by 170 votes at the end of election night Nov. 4.

Kelley plans to change patrol shifts from eight hours to 10 or 12. He believes the overlap during busier times is a more effective use of manpower.

Kelley also has said he will arrange to bring legal arrangements for foreclosure sales under the state’s attorney’s office. He believes that

move will save money to hire more correctional deputies at the county jail, reducing overtime there.

“This [victory] was from the support I got within the department. That was what made the difference,” Kelley said. “Men and women who are in law enforcement going door-to-door for me. The hours they put in was overwhelming.”

Kelley’s campaign was widely supported by other local Democrats. Will Coun-

ty Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil served as his campaign chairman.

“I’ve known Mike and his family my entire life. The character that he has [is why] I was happy to help when he asked,” O’Neil said.

Kelley said having only two weeks to prepare to start his administration instead of knowing on election night will make things “twice as difficult to start.” He takes office Dec. 1.

“We’ve got a lot of work to

do. My guys and I will be sitting down with the sheriff and his guys very soon to make sure this transition goes as smooth as possible,” Kelley said.

Ken Kaupas, a 26-year state police veteran, is a deputy chief for the sheriff’s office. Kelley will replace Paul Kaupas, Ken’s second cousin, who has been sheriff for 12 years.

“I think we ran a very good campaign and a clean campaign,” Ken Kaupas said.

“Going into today, the provisional ballots were my worry, from what the numbers were saying, and that was what got me,” he said.

Kaupas and Kelley had a brief conversation after the result that both men described as “cordial.”

“There’s no bad blood between us,” Kelley said.

“I wish the sheriff-elect the best of luck,” Kaupas said.

But Kaupas said he will not remain with the sheriff’s office once Kelley takes over.

“Next I’m going to make up for some lost time with my family,” he said.

Voter turnout in Will County was a little more than 50 percent for the election, with 195,530 ballots cast for 388,057 registered voters.

Of the 1,391 provisional ballots, more than 720 were submitted by voters who came in to register and vote on Election Day and the day before.

While Kelley’s margin was narrow, County Clerk Nancy Schultz-Voots said the difference of more than 400 votes makes it unlikely ballots will be reviewed for a potential recount.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – More than 50 people packed into The Wandering Dragon Game Shoppe for an auction Saturday that promised opportunities to buy hours of fun for as little as $1.

Attendees were surrounded by shelves stacked with board games. The first item up for auction was Bomb, a jigsaw puzzle game that went to a bidder for only $1. But the room of bidders loved it.

“It looks like a 1980s PC game,” one bidder said.

The Wandering Dragon, 15032 S. Des Plaines St. in Plainfield, held its annual fall board game auction Saturday, moving more than 500 board games from owner to owner during a nonstop, 5-hour period.

People tired of their board games had the opportunity

to list them in the auction.

Bidders bought the games and the original owners received an equivalent amount of store credit.

The Wandering Dragon set up shop in 2012 and has a spring and fall board game auction every year.

“It’s a neat way for people trading games that they don’t care for or use anymore,” owner Kevin Martin said.

Games received bids from $1 to more than $50. Some games were rare finds, while others were valuable expansions to existing games.

The auction attracted board game collectors and enthusiasts, as well as parents looking for unique games to play with their kids.

Romeoville resident Bob LePera remembers bidding against another person for a game up to $30, when another person threw out a $50 bid.

He lost that one, but did get

other games, such as “Mystery of the Abbey” and “Ikusa.”

“It’s fun to bid on the games, and I got some pretty good value buys,” LePera said, adding that he got about 20 games from $15 to $20 each. “These games can go for $50 to $60 on the shelf.”

Paul Bachleda traveled to Plainfield from Oak Lawn after checking out photos of the games that The Wandering Dragon posted on its Facebook page.

Bachleda said he has collected board games for more than 20 years and has been to board game auctions at The Wandering Dragon and several other game shops in Illinois.

He ended up spending $93 on seven board games.

JOLIET – The city of Joliet ranks just below the state average when it comes to laws and policies relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality, according to an annual report released last week by the Human Rights Campaign.

This year was the first time the civil rights organization included Joliet in its annual Municipal Equality Index report. The report – which ranked more than 350 cities in the U.S., including seven in Illinois – is the only nationwide rating system of LGBT inclusion in municipal law and policy, according to the group.

Joliet scored 63 out of 100 – six points below the state average, but four points above the national average. Chicago led the way in Illinois, scoring 100. Other cities ranked by the group include Aurora: 61; Champaign: 70; Naperville: 59; Rockford: 57; and Springfield: 76.

The civil rights organization ranked Joliet low for the city’s relationship with the LGBT community, with a score of zero out of 8. This category measures the city’s leadership commitment to fully include the LGBT community and to advocate for full equality.

That’s where Joliet leadership has fallen short, said Gini Lester, president with Community Alliance & Action Network, a Joliet-based LGBT advocacy and support group.

“We’re ignored. We’re not necessarily attacked, but we’re ignored,” Lester said.

“We’re not part of the conversation, but we need to be.”

Promoting LGBT equality policies and laws in Joliet should fall on the shoulders of individuals, city officials and volunteer groups like CAAN, she said.

“I’m not going to pass judgment on people for their lifestyles. That’s their business,” Giarrante said Tuesday’s Joliet City Council meeting.

“Having been raised 12 years in Catholic School, it’s not my religious belief.”

As an employer, the city scored 13 out of 29, losing points for not providing transgender-inclusive health care benefits or having a city contractor non-discrimination ordinance.

Lester said even as gay and lesbian couples gain ground in the U.S. with the legalization of same-sex marriage, transgender individuals continue to face discrimination.

The city also lost points for not providing health-insurance coverage to transgenders and for the lack of a LGBT liaison.

In more detailed categories, Joliet ranked high for being non-discriminatory in its hires, for recognizing domestic partner health benefits and for providing equivalent family leave opportunities.

Lester said when civil unions were legalized in 2011 statewide, the City of Joliet had “paperwork ready to go the very next day” for employment benefits.

Swim school looks to establish Plainfield location PLAINFIELD – A vacant building in the Wolf Creek industrial park may soon become a swim school for children.

On Monday, Plainfield village trustees directed the village attorney to draft ordi-

nances annexing the land from Wheatland Township and rezoning it from the township’s I-1 industrial zone to the village’s B-3 highway business zone.

The site is adjacent to the Plainfield Business Park.

“We do believe it’s a logical extension of the village’s

boundaries,” Garrigan said.

Trustees also approved plans for the Goldfish Swim School to convert the 12,000-square-foot building at 12315 S. Rhea Drive into a pool facility.

Village Planner Michael Garrigan said the school re-

quested annexation into the village because the development has well water and the school needs the village’s sewer and waters systems. Goldfish will be the first private swim school for children in the village.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Schools serving students from Crest Hill will provide winter clothing for low-income students with help from the city.

Chaney-Monge School District 88, Richland School District 88a and Crystal Lawns Elementary School in Plainfield School District 202 each received a $500 check from the city of Crest Hill during a City Council meeting Monday night.

The Family Outreach Program in Crest Hill also received a $500 check from the city, which it will use to buy a turkey for every residence that uses the food pantry.

The money came from fundraising efforts by the city’s Special Events Committee and the Crest Hill Women’s Civic League bake sale Aug. 3 during

the Crest Hill Fifth Annual Picnic. Alderwomen Tina Oberlin and Candi Thuringer helped organize the programs.

“The partnership that we have with the city is fantastic,” Chaney-Monge Superintendent Andy Siegfried said.

“We’re going to use this to buy coats, hats and gloves for those students.”

Richland Assistant Principal Cheri Russell said teachers already have identified needy students who will receive winter clothing through the donation.

“We have a lot of kids we see that don’t have proper clothing for this year,” she said.

Crystal Lawns Principal Jennifer Jachowicz said the school has seen an increase in students needing financial aid.

“Any little bit we’re very gracious to accept, to help our families in need,” Jachowicz said.

JOLIET – CenterPoint Properties will develop a loading facility for Saturn Agriculture Inc. at its Joliet intermodal center, the company announced Tuesday.

Saturn will use 14.4 acres for a facility where it will transfer local soybeans and dried distilled grain into containers that will be shipped internationally, Oak Brook-based CenterPoint said in a news release.

About eight or 10 people will be employed at the Saturn facility, CenterPoint said. Oper-

ations should begin in autumn 2015. The facility is now under construction.

Saturn signed a 10-year lease on the build-to-suit facility, which includes loading, dumping and storage features, CenterPoint said. The facility will be able to handle more than 200 containers a day.

CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet is the largest agricultural export hub in the Midwest, according to CenterPoint.

More than 105 million bushels of agricultural products are exported from the industrial park annually.

For two hours prior to the regular school board meeting Monday, the parties met in separate rooms negotiating the next teachers’ contract.

After the board meeting, they immediately went back to negotiations.

It was the third meeting the two groups have held so far, according to Board Pres-

ident George McCoy. He said he hopes a final agreement will be made by Christmas.

“We are moving along as well as we thought we would,” McCoy said. “Both sides are working to get fast resolve on the contract.”

“We’re progressing,” school board member Joan Ferguson said. “We know we have good teachers, and we want to do it as fairly as we can.”

The teachers’ contract is up in 2015, and the board and teachers are working toward a new five-year agreement.

A: Yes - many of the methods of minimizing taxes must be completed prior to year end.

Income Taxes - In order for charitable and other expenditures to be included as itemized deductions, they must be remitted prior to December 31. Be aware that many professional fees, including the cost of developing and implementing a trust for estate planning purposes, are deductible for income tax purposes.

For this reason, you should try to pay professional fees prior to December 31.

Estate/Gift Taxes - While not deductible for income tax purposes, many

individuals regularly make annual exclusion gifts to their children and other descendants, as a method of reducing the size of their estate for federal estate tax purposes. An individual may currently transfer $14,000 per donee, per tax year, without filing a federal gift tax return. Married couples who elect to “split”gifts can give a total of $28,000 per donee per tax year. Gifts must be made prior to year end, and ideally should be completed with certified or guaranteed funds, to avoid problems if the donor dies prior to the check’s being honored by the bank.

The form offers options to each of these questions which readers will need to consider when completing this form.

You need a healthcare power of attorney when a serious illness or accident prevents you from being able to make decisions concerning your medical treatment and making end-of-life decisions.

Your current power of attorney for healthcare is probably still valid. But if you execute a power of attorney for healthcare after January 1, 2015, you will have to use the new form.

You can find it by “Googling” Illinois Public Act 98-1113.

The Small Estate Affidavit form has also been significantly revised. A Small Estate Affidavit can be used to distribute a deceased person’s estate if the value is under $100,000.00.

“Estate” means real and personal property of the deceased person that are in the deceased person’s name, only, at the time of his or her death – no named beneficiary, no surviving joint tenant, no person named to “pay or transfer on death”.

This new form can be found at Illinois Public Act 98-836.

The third new law that is of interest to us elder law attorneys is Illinois Public Act 98-1093. It provides that if a “caregiver” (or a caregiver’s spouse, cohabitant child or employer) receives $20,000.00 or more from the person being cared for, on or after that person’s death, it is presumptively void. This law exempts the family members of the person receiving assistance. Too often there have been instances where the caregiver has used undue influence to weedle gifts from a frail elderly person.

A: It depends. The Workers’ Compensation Act in Illinois is 102 years old, and arose out of a mine disaster in Cerry, Illinois where widows and injured workers were left without benefits because there was no workers’ compensation system. Notwithstanding the political spin of the last elections, it has been a very good system for both employees and employers. There are certain requirements to have a workers’ compensation case. It is a no fault law. Because it is a no fault law, the worker gets benefits if there is an accident arising out of and in the course of the employment, but the benefits are limited. The employers get not only a cap on benefits, but they also get employer immunity. That means that if the employer is at fault, regardless of how egregious, unless intentional there can be no sustainable law suit.

However, if an employee is injured on the job as a result of wrongful conduct of a third-party, there may be a valid law suit against that third-party. One example is a construction worker working for a subcontractor, who is injured through the fault or lack of proper safety from the general contractor. The general contractor is not his employer and can be sued. The second is the employee who either is traveling for work or regularly drives, who is injured by the fault of another driver. In those circumstances the employee can get workers’ compensation benefits, but also have a personal injury claim, where there are no caps, against the nonemployer wrongful party. In these circumstances, the employer gets an additional benefit, in that he gets his workers’ compensation monies paid back from the wrongdoer before the employee can get anything. We have handled cases involving the wrongful conduct of third-parties in the fields of motor vehicles, construction site negligence, products liability, and medical malpractice. If you have any questions about whether there is a case against a third-party other than the employer in a workers’ compensation setting, you should call your lawyer and ask.

Q. I was just in an auto accident. I was injured.

What steps should I take to make sure I have everything I need if I decide to file a lawsuit for my injuries?

A. While at the scene, and assuming your injuries are not immediately life threatening, the best thing to do is start “preserving the evidence”. This means taking pictures of your vehicle, the other vehicle(s) and the scene where the accident took place. With so many people having phones with cameras, this should be fairly easy to do. Make sure to exchange driver information with the other driver(s) involved in the accident.

Get names, addresses and phone numbers as well as insurance information. Check for witnesses. If they will talk to you take their information (name, phone, address, quick note of what they saw).

As soon as is practical, write out a summary of what happened. Try to include as many details as you can remember.

These details will fade over time, so the sooner you do this, the better.

If injured, seek treatment as soon as possible. Make sure to give a detailed description of the accident and your injuries.

Both can be very helpful in getting the appropriate treatment.

Follow up with the treatment recommended by the doctor.

The doctor’s job is to help you get better. It’s your job too.

Gaps of time in your treatment can adversely affect your healing and general health. They also make a full recovery for your injuries more difficult to obtain. If you do not have the finances available to do all the treatment that the doctor suggests, discuss it with him/her and try to find alternative ways to get the treatment you need.

Finally, if your injuries are such that you decide to seek damages from the person responsible for them, contact a lawyer who is knowledgeable in injury law as early as practical.

That way the two of you can work together to achieve the best results possible. adno=0301018

Lee had an active real estate law practice until her retirement in 2012 and a reputation for knowing the real estate records in the Monroeville area better than anyone else, said Keith Norman, executive director of the Alabama State Bar. “She was legendary in that part of the state,” he said.

For years, Alice Lee was active as a leader in the United Methodist Church, which has an award named in her honor that is given to women in ministry. She was the first and still only female to lead the Alabama-West Florida Conference delegation to the church’s general conference.

Everyone trusted Alice Lee and her brilliant mind, Butts said.

MONROEVILLE, Ala. – Alice Lee, the sister of the famous “To Kill a Mockingbird” author and an influential Alabama lawyer and church leader in her own right, died Monday at age 103.

Lee practiced law until a few years ago, following the footsteps of her father – the model for small-town lawyer Atticus Finch, the driving character in “Mockingbird.”

For a time, Lee was Alabama’s oldest practicing lawyer.

Perhaps most famously, Lee helped guard the privacy of her sister Nelle Harper Lee, who in 1961 won the Pulitzer Prize for her only published novel.

Requests to interview Harper Lee often landed on the desk of Alice Lee, and the answer was always a firm, but polite, “No.”

Johnson Funeral Home in Monroeville, the sisters’ longtime south Alabama home, posted an online notice saying Lee died Monday.

Retired United Methodist minister Thomas Lane Butts of Monroeville said she had been in declining health for a few weeks, and “her heart wore out.” Funeral arrangements were not complete, he said.

Butts said her death means all three of Harper Lee’s siblings are now deceased, and it will be a difficult time for the 88-year-old author. “I’ve heard her say many times she didn’t know what she would do without Alice. However, the last three years, she has essentially been without her because Alice has been incapacitated,” he said.

Lawmakers eye final attempt at state-run insurance exchange

CHICAGO – Illinois lawmakers may have one more chance to approve a state-run health insurance marketplace during the fall legislative session that starts Wednesday, and they are under pressure from an end-ofthe-year deadline and a pending court decision.

Supporters of creating a staterun website said the impending deadline to receive up to $300 million in federal funding plus a U.S. Supreme Court decision on tax credits due in the spring create urgency. Currently, Illinois residents buy insurance on the national HealthCare.gov website.

Gov. Pat Quinn, who is set to leave office in January, supports the idea, and the Illinois Senate passed a bill last year. Sponsors are readying a House version.

But disagreement remains over who should pay for the estimated $50 million annual operating cost of a state marketplace, also called an insurance exchange.

Lawmakers discuss state’s school funding system

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois House lawmakers are considering a proposed school funding formula that would direct more state money to poorer rural districts at the expense of wealthier suburban Chicago ones.

The issue was discussed at a Tuesday afternoon hearing in Springfield. Earlier in the day, funding overhaul proponents held a rally at the state Capitol.

The legislation would change Illinois’ dated school funding formula. Over the years there’s been widespread agreement the formula should be altered, but disagreement over how.

Circuit judge hears request in fracking rule arguments

EDWARDSVILLE – A judge began weighing Tuesday a request from a group of landowners to at least delay Illinois’ new rules for high-volume oil and gas drilling from taking effect.

Madison County Circuit Judge Barbara Crowder’s decision to take the matter under advisement came after more than two hours of debate between the landowners’ attorneys – who argued the state’s rules were flawed procedurally – and state attorneys, who countered the

Small plane crashes into Chicago home; pilot killed

CHICAGO – A small twin-engine cargo plane crashed into a home on Chicago’s southwest side Tuesday, killing the pilot but sparing a couple who were asleep just inches away.

The Aero Commander 500-B slammed nose-down into the front of the home around 2:40 a.m., punching through the

ground floor into the basement and leaving about a third of the aircraft sticking straight out of the red-brick home.

“The wreckage was about 8 inches away from them,” Assistant Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Michael Fox said of the home’s two residents.

“They were in a bedroom next to the living room and the living room is gone.” Both told first responders they were fine and refused any medical attention.

No one else was on board. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately release the pilot’s name.

The pilot reported engine trouble shortly after taking off from Midway International Airport and asked to return to the airport. But the plane crashed about a quarter mile short of the runway, officials said.

Over the past few months, U.S. medical centers have spent millions of dollars putting together a plan to treat patients with the scary, but extremely rare disease.

To a large extent, it has been an exercise in improvisation.

In Newark, New Jersey, a hospital dealing with a space-crunch and staff anxiety moved its Ebola operation out of its main building and into a mobile medical shelter ordinarily used during natural disasters. In Dallas, Texas, three hospital systems pooled resources to create a treatment center in a defunct intensive care unit sitting empty since the spring. In Kansas, a hospital hastily built walls and hung plastic sheeting to create an isolation suite. A New York City hospital put together one unit, decided it wasn’t optimal and is finishing work on a replacement.

Federal officials have said they’re trying to identify up to

20 hospitals around the country as Ebola referral centers.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention inspection teams have visited nearly 30 hospitals to offer advice and see if they have the right safeguards in place to treat patients with Ebola.

A U.S. House subcommittee held a hearing on Ebola preparedness Tuesday. A U.S. Senate committee had another hearing on the subject planned for Wednesday.

President Barack Obama has asked Congress for $6.18 billion to fight Ebola globally, some of which could be used to strengthen domestic health defenses.

There is no tried-and-true way to build an Ebola ward, but the administrators cobbling them together have been guided by a few key principals gleaned from clinics in Africa and the few full biocontainment facilities in the U.S. At a minimum, treatment units need a “hot” zone where patients can be isolated, a “cold” zone kept free of anything that might be tainted with the virus, and a “warm” zone where workers can peel

off protective gear while spotters watch for any small break in protocol. Most hospitals also have preferred to locate their Ebola treatment areas far, far from other patients.

For example, Newark’s University Hospital came up with a solution that was sitting in storage: A Western Shelter GK-1935 medical tent system – sort of an emergency room in a box that the hospital had previously deployed after Hurricane Sandy.

It quickly became a pop-up isolation unit, erected inside a vacant, unfinished floor in the hospital’s ambulatory care building.

The public got a peek at the setup when it was used to quarantine Kaci Hickox, a Doctors Without Borders nurse returned from helping treat Ebola patients in Sierra Leone.

Health officials in Texas found something bigger: the Methodist Campus for Continuing Care, a former full-service hospital outside Dallas that had been sitting mostly empty since the staff moved to a new campus last spring.

Israel vows harsh response to synagogue attack

By JOSEF FEDERMAN The Associated Press JERUSALEM – Israel vowed harsh retaliation Tuesday for a Palestinian attack that killed five people and left blood-smeared prayer books and shawls on the floor of a synagogue in Jerusalem – an assault that sharply escalated already-high tensions after weeks of religious violence.

The attack during morning prayers in the west Jerusalem neighborhood of Har Nof was carried out by two Palestinian cousins wielding meat cleavers, knives and a handgun. They were shot to death by police after the deadliest assault in the holy city since 2008.

Four of the dead were rabbis, and one was a police officer who died of his wounds hours after the attack. Three of the rabbis were born in the United States and the fourth was born in England, although all held dual Israeli citizenship. Five others were wounded.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack, the first time he has done so in the wave of deadly violence against Israelis. But he

also called for an end to Israeli “provocations” surrounding Jerusalem’s shrines that are sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

President Barack Obama called the attack “horrific” and without justification, urging cooperation from both sides to ease tensions and adding that too many Israelis and Palestinians have died in recent months, Tuesday’s attack, however, appeared to mark a turning point, with the gruesome scene in a house of worship shocking a nation long accustomed to violence.

The government released a photo of a meat cleaver it said came from the crime scene.

Government video showed blood-soaked prayer books and prayer shawls in the synagogue.

“I saw people lying on the floor, blood everywhere,” said Yosef Posternak, who was at the synagogue in the quiet neighborhood that has a large community of English-speaking immigrants.

In Gaza, dozens celebrated in the streets, with some offering trays full of candy.

The U.S.-born victims were identified as Moshe Twersky, 59, Aryeh Kupinsky, 43, and Kalman Levine, 55. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said the British man was Avraham Goldberg, 68, who immigrated to Israel in 1993.

It described the four as “rabbis,” an honorific title in the ultra-Orthodox world given to men who are considered pious and learned. Twersky, a native of Boston, was the head of the Toras Moshe Yeshiva, a seminary for English-speaking students. He was the son of Rabbi Isador Twersky, founder of Harvard University’s Center for Jewish Studies, and a grandson Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, a luminary in the world of modern Orthodox Jewry.

U.S.-Iran diplomatic talks haunted by history

By MATTHEW LEE The Associated Press LONDON – Bill Clinton tried. So did George W. Bush.

Neither succeeded. As President Barack Obama’s own second term winds down, he is getting closer than either of his immediate predecessors to the goal of improving U.S. relations with Iran. But he’s not there yet, and plenty stands in the way, including a messy and brutal conflict in Iraq and Syria.

As high-stakes negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program resumes Tuesday in Vienna ahead of a Nov. 24 deadline for a deal, the ghosts of previous failed attempts at American-Iranian rapprochement loom large. So do very real and current concerns, largely the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, fierce

opposition to a deal from Israel and open hostility in Congress and hardliners in Iran who already look to be trying to derail a potential agreement.

Those issues, combined with the complex nature of the negotiations, have made for slow going and increased chances for something less than a full deal being struck by the target date. Officials say an extension of the already once-extended talks is possible, but warn additional delays will invite more complications.

Obama and his top aides deny that anything other than resolving the nuclear deadlock is in play. Yet, they also acknowledge a deal is key to any broader improvement in relations, something Obama is reported to have conveyed in a recent letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamanei.

Though it hangs over the process, what appears to be a shared U.S.-Iranian interest in defeating Islamic State has been raised only tangentially.

The Obama administration’s goal is to ultimately defeat the militants, whose rise it blames on atrocities committed by Syrian President Bashar Assad and the failure of the previous leadership in Iraq.

Iran shares America’s goal of defeating IS, but while it may have acquiesced to the ouster of pro-Iranian Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki earlier this year, it has not given up on Assad, who the U.S. insists must go.

Hence, Obama is treading carefully as many demand more be done to get rid of Assad.

He has rejected suggestions that more U.S. aid to Syrian rebels is aimed at toppling Assad.

The U.S.-Iran divergence

on Assad alone would be problematic, but it’s far from the only non-nuclear point of contention.

Decades of mistrust weigh heavily on the talks. And they go back further than the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran and the hostage-taking at the U.S. Embassy. Iranians also have long memories of U.S. support for the 1953 coup that overthrew Iran’s prime minister, Mohammed Mossadeq.

For the past 14 years, the US has tried to undo some of that damage. At the same time, they have increased pressure on Iran by imposing sanctions on it for sponsoring U.S.-designated terrorist organizations, supporting anti-Israel groups, rights abuses and its nuclear program.

The Clinton administration sought to capitalize on the 1997 election of reform-minded Ira-

nian President Mohammad Khatami by easing some sanctions, acknowledging the U.S. role in the 1953 coup and engaging in limited contact over the situation in Afghanistan.

That contact intensified after the Sept. 11, 2001, and the American-led ouster of the Taliban from Afghanistan, but quickly became snagged again over Iranian nuclear activity, President George W. Bush’s branding of Iran as a member of the “axis of evil” and the imposition of new sanctions.

Yet, even the Bush administration sought to ease tensions, reversing a decision not to participate in nuclear talks between Iran and European nations. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice proposed in 2008 that the U.S. open an interests section in Tehran to restore an American diplomatic presence.

A cold case review by the Will County State’s Attorney’s office renewed the murder charge against Glover two years ago while he was already

Prosecutors say ballistics reports from a bullet that was destroyed after crime lab testing should be admitted. Glover admitted firing into a bedroom wall two months before Franklin’s death.

He claimed the gun went off accidentally, but Franklin said Glover threatened her, according to testimony at an earlier hearing.

Two injured in semi collision on 55

MINOOKA – The gas leak on Monday in the Rivers Edge Landing subdivision was shut off and fixed Monday night.

Nicor and village public works officials said the leak, which was caused by public works crew hitting a gas main, was shut off at about 6:30 p.m. and fixed by 9 p.m.

“The actual ordinance itself streamlines the previous ordinance,” Village Planner Michael Garrigan said.

The new policy expedites demolition permits for properties not considered historically significant and are less than 50 years old.

Structures that are historically significant will need to go through a hearing before the Historic Preservation Commission within 30 days.

The Village Board will have the final say in deciding whether a permit should be issued or demolition should be delayed for three months to encourage the commission and property owner to find alternatives.

The new ordinance also states the demolition permit will be active for a year. After that, the applicant would need to ask the village board for a permit re-approval. The permit could only transfer to a new owner if the new owner keeps plans already approved by the Village Board.

Illinois State Police are investigating an incident that took place at 1:25 p.m. On late Tuesday afternoon, authorities said the cause of the crash was unknown.

One driver was in each semitrailer and both sustained injuries, police officials said.

Wouldn’t post-vote civility be good idea?

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – Recently, I watched my 9-year-old daughter, Gracie, shake hands with her opponents after a tough loss on the basketball court.

Basketball is a new thing for her. In fact, it’s the first time she has competed in any sport. Already, she has learned one thing: Winning is a whole lot more fun than losing.

But even after a tough loss, we expect her to shake hands or “high five” members of the opposing team and congratulate them.

Some folks might consider this to be a meaningless ritual.

But not me. How one handles loss speaks to character.

Our hope is that basketball won’t just be an experience where she learns how to dribble, shoot and rebound.

We also want to her learn how to cope with life’s disappointments, such as losing that game you were certain you were going to win.

After all, winning is nice, but character is more important.

Politicians could learn something from those 9-yearolds. During the three decades I’ve covered politics, I’ve seen it all.

Back when I was a city hall reporter in the Quad Cities, a drunken mayoral candidate on election night belittled the intelligence of voters for not choosing him.

After listening to that performance, I had to say the voters were smarter than he thought.

On the other hand, I remember a victorious U.S. Rep. Lane Evans offer consolation to the man he defeated and

publicly state he would seek his advice on how to serve.

Evans was a class act.

Unfortunately, there are sore losers unable to let the word “congratulations” pass their lips.

To put it in the words of Jimmy Carter: “Show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser.” He said that after losing a tough primary race to be Georgia governor. Of course, Carter resurrected his political career and later became governor and then president.

And let’s not forget Richard Nixon, who infamously said after the losing the race for governor of California, “You don’t have Nixon to kick around anymore.”

My point? It doesn’t matter if you are a Republican or a Democrat, losing is the pits – but how you respond to your loss speaks volumes about yourself.

Earlier this month, Pat Quinn lost a tough race for governor.

There is no shame in that.

One thing we know before about every election is there will be a winner – and a loser.

He didn’t concede the night of the election. And the next day, he offered no congratulations to his opponent and even failed to say his name.

There is no mandate in politics that you have to be a good sport. And civility largely was absent from the gubernatorial campaigns of both Quinn and his opponent, Governor-elect Bruce Rauner.

But now that the election is over, civility would be a good balm to apply for an electorate weary of mudslinging and anxious for answers.

Durbin a better choice to lead Senate’s Democrats Amid some grumbling, Democrats in the U.S. Senate have re-elected Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada to be their leader for the next two years.

We believe that decision was a mistake.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 man in the Democratic caucus, would have been a better choice.

Why? Come January, Reid will have led Senate Democrats for 10 years – two years as Senate minority leader and eight years as Senate majority leader. That’s a long time.

He’s coming off a big defeat for his party in this month’s election that saw the GOP gain eight seats (possibly nine, depending on the outcome of the Louisiana runoff election Dec. 6), win majority status and send Democrats into the minority for the first time in eight years.

Reid has had frosty relations with Republicans

on Capitol Hill. Now, those Republicans – led by incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and returning House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio – will control Congress for the last two years of President Barack Obama’s term.

If anything is to be accomplished by Congress and President Obama, we’ll need cooperation and compromise. Reid is not known for those traits. Durbin is.

We also will need reason and moderation. Reid is not known for those traits.

Durbin is.

Durbin, who will turn 70 on Friday, has had an effective career in the Senate, both when his party was in the minority and in the majority.

Durbin comes off a 10-point victory over Republican Jim Oberweis in the Nov. 4 election to secure a fourth term – the only Illinois Dem-

ocrat to accomplish that feat – so he obviously is well-regarded in his home state.

That is a mark in Durbin’s favor, and he won’t face voters again until 2020.

Reid, by contrast, is up for election in 2016, an upcoming distraction that likely will lessen his effectiveness as partisan home-state political issues arise.

Durbin would be in a position to take a less-partisan view on major issues, which would bode well for more functionality to return to Congress.

Senate Democrats did not choose Durbin to lead them but did re-elect him as party whip, the No. 2 post, where his influence likely still will have a beneficial impact on Congress – and the nation.

And he’s still available on the party bench should discontented fellow senators ever decide they need a new quarterback.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

South gets first win in a home opener

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Plainfield South girls basketball coach Leah Carter is prepared to get a little crazy.

Her Cougars took the first step Tuesday toward getting her to dye her hair blue.

“If we can get to 12 wins, which is our goal, I’ll dye my hair blue, I’ll do crazy things for these girls,” Carter said following South’s exciting if not particularly artistic 43-39 season-opening victory over visiting Joliet West.

The victory marked the first time in school history that the Cougars won their home opener. Last year, South tied the school record for victories in season with seven, and the Cougars are determined to shatter that mark this time around.

“We sat down and went over our schedule, and the girls came to 12 wins that they thought we could get,” Carter said. “We think we can finish in the top four in our conference [Southwest Prairie].”

The Cougars did something winning teams usually do.

They made enough free throws at crunch time to clinch the victory. Ally Fink, Jaianna Brooks and Kaylin Doran all knocked down a pair at crunch

“Kaylin’s two at the end were key,” Carter said. “She’s a role player for us, and she’s a senior leader.”

Seconds earlier, West junior guard Arianna Liceaga had nailed a 20-footer from the right wing to make it 41-39 and let the Cougars know there was no quit in the Tigers. All in all, not a bad debut for West coach John Placher.

“We have to cut down on our turnovers and get stronger on the boards, but overall I am proud of our girls,” Placher said. “We don’t have one who has any real varsity experience, and at that, if we had made a few free throws,

we could have won the game.

The future looks promising.”

Indeed, the Tigers finished 7 of 25 from the line, including 3 of 11 in the fourth quarter.

Despite West’s repeated charges, South maintained the lead the entire second half.

The Cougars scored the first six points of the second half to extend a 21-18 halftime lead to 27-18, and West was running uphill from there.

The first half featured extended runs by both sides. The Tigers’ 9-0 run provided a 13-7 lead, and the Cougars responded with a 14-0 streak over nearly six minutes to make it 21-13.

West finished the half with a 5-0 splash to get within 21-18.

“That’s what you get in first games,” Carter said. “We had 17 turnovers the first half [the same number West had at that point], but our defense and being able to score in transition at times kept us in the game.”

Jaianna Brooks scored 11 points, Taylor Everett 10 and freshman Anya Brooks seven for South. Anya Brooks grabbed 10 rebounds.

For West, sophomore Raven Reed finished with nine points and 15 rebounds. Kiera Taylor came off the bench to score 12 points, and sophomore Mulder chipped in seven rebounds.

Joliet Central stuns L-Way Central in overtime

JOLIET – The handful of people who left Tuesday night’s opening game between Lincoln-Way Central and Joliet Central at halftime will not believe the final score: Joliet Central 67, Lincoln-Way Central 66, in overtime.

That, after the Knights opened up a 20-2 lead in the opening 5:17, rolled to a 26-6 margin after a quarter and a 34-18 advantage at the intermission.

Despite 27 points and seven rebounds from 5-foot-11 senior Candace Finnin in 17

minutes of action, the Knights couldn’t hold off the Steelmen. Partly, that was due to Finnin’s absence in the final 3:06. She picked up her fifth foul on Chantell Mack’s driving layup, which cut the lead to 59-52.

The Steelmen, with guard Monica Barefield, charitably listed at 5-feet, leading the way, took over. It was Barefield’s three-pointer from the right side that tied the game at 65-all with nine-tenths a second remaining.

“They were looking for Ashley (Hare),” Barefield said.

“She was triple-teamed. So I took it.”

The shot was perfect, and so were the Steelmen in the overtime. Mack (21 points, 8 rebounds) drove the lane and scored for Joliet Central’s first lead of the night with 2:25 left, and the defense of the hosts kept the Knights off the board, save for a solitary free throw

by Jenna Meyers 10 seconds later.

She missed the second opportunity, and the Knights, so accurate from the floor in the first 28 minutes, continued the trend of the last four minutes of regulation and missed all six shots they took in the extra four minutes.

Part of that was because

of Finnin’s absence. Part of it was the Steelmen’s defensive play. They pressed and disrupted Lincoln-Way Central’s previously unsullied passing lanes.

“When it was 20-2, I told them, ‘We’ll be fine, but you’ve got to crank it up.’ ” Steelmen coach Brian Reed said.

Mission accomplished.

Barefield’s 23 points led the Steelmen, She also had five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Morgan Jones added 10 points for the winners.

Cora Likins, who hit 7 of 10 free throws in the final quarter but never got to the line in overtime, had 12 points for

Lincoln-Way Central, while Collenn Barrett added 10 points.

For Knights coach Chris Featherling, the finish was a rude awakening.

“That 23 (Barefield) made life difficult for our guards,” Featherling said. “They did a good job of turning up the pressure.”

The Steelmen return to action at Romeoville on Thursday night, the second game of five in the season’s first seven days. Lincoln-Way Central hosts Joliet West on Saturday.

Joliet Central romped to a 49-20 victory in the sophomore game.

the best from every state. It’s a blessing to be able to play against the best at your position at your age. It’s just fun to realize that this has happened

“One of the biggest things about my decision was being able to have a great relationship with the head coach and his staff, and coach Wardle welcomed me with open arms.

I’m glad that it’s over since I can just focus on this season. We don’t want to happen what’s happened in the past where we’ve lost in the regional; we’re trying to go farther.”

Nixon is heading even farther from home in his pursuit of a college career. He also was one of three first-day signees for veteran head coach Larry Eustachy, who’s in his third season at the Fort Collins school, which competes in the Mountain West Conference. Colorado State ultimately won out over schools such as St. Louis and Southern Methodist.

“It’s a good feeling now that

it’s all out of the way,” Nixon said. “Turning down schools is hard. Everybody had something different to offer, but I think Colorado State had the most to offer to help in school and on the court to help me get to the next level. It was hard to turn down St. Louis since it’s close to home and SMU since they were first to recruit me.

“I really liked the family environment at Colorado State. My dad and coach Leonard Perry, the associate head coach, have known one another since they were little kids.

When they started recruiting me, they kind of got back on track to where they left off; and since then, coach Perry is really like another uncle.”

Like Torres, Nixon has improved during the offseason competing for the Illinois Wolves.

“I think all of the hard work that I’ve put in over the last three or four years is going to prepare me for the Mountain West so that I can be a key contributor,” Nixon said. “We play against top 10 and top 20 guys in the country; so playing with the Wolves, we’ve been in college environment games, so I think that really helped me get ready for the next level.”

Raiders coach Rob Brost is thrilled Nixon and Torres have their college plans in place and hopes the pair will be able to close out their high school careers on a high note.

“I’m proud of both guys, not only for what they’ve done on the floor but what they continue to do academically,” Brost said. “They’ve really set the standard for what is expected of student athletes in this building for what you need to do to get to that next level.”

BOLINGBROOK – Prentiss Nixon and Julian Torres both have high expectations for Bolingbrook’s boys basketball team this season, and now the talented duo can focus all of their efforts on helping to make sure that it happens.

That’s because both Torres and Nixon signed national letters of intent last week, freeing them from having to worry about where they intend to play collegiately.

Nixon, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound guard, will compete at Colorado State University; Torres, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound center/forward, will play at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Torres, who plays Amateur Athletic Union ball with Mac Irvin Fire and also competed last summer with the U-18 Puerto Rican National team, decided upon Green Bay over more local schools such as Northern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago.

He is one of three signees thus far for Phoenix coach Brian Wardle, who was a standout at Hinsdale Central and Marquette before assisting and then taking over the Horizon League program, where his squad went 24-7 a year ago.

“It’s a blessing to be able to go to school for free, whatever school it is,” Torres said.

“That’s been my goal, to get to school for free so my parents weren’t stressing about money. I’ve put in a lot of hard work and dedication to the game, but it’s also been a lot of fun.

“I started playing basketball in sixth grade, and it’s always been easy since I’ve been the tallest kid on the team. But this summer going to Puerto Rico, I saw that just your game and skill wasn’t enough since you had to have mental toughness, and I think that I’ve been able to develop that over the years in order to get through adversity.”

Torres said his experiences competing against other top players in both AAU and with the national team should help prepare him for the Division I game.

Wilmington on last leg of journey to state

By DRAKE SKLEBA Shaw Media Correspondent WILMINGTON – The blaring sounds of Deep Purples’ 1972 smash hit “Smoke on the Water.”

The revving engines of multiple Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The Wilmington marching band, cheerleaders and pompom squads. The Civil War cannon and a fireworks display, lighting up the Wilmington sky.

All of this pregame spectacular will welcome the Byron Tigers at 5 p.m.

Saturday as they meet the undefeated Wilmington Wildcats in an IHSA Class 3A football semifinal.

Wilmington (12-0), the Interstate Eight Small champions, will square off with Byron (8-4) of the Big Northern West. Wilmington outlasted St. Joseph-Ogden, 20-19, in a heart-stopping quarterfinal Saturday night.

Byron ousted previously undefeated and defending Class 2A state champion Sterling Newman, 16-14, in Byron.

Byron entered the playoffs as one of the few in Class 3A with a 5-4 record.

The Tigers lost in Week 9 to Dixon, 4228, but had a healthy 44 playoff points to get in.

The Tigers feasted on a couple Chicago Public League foes, beating Bowen, 51-12, and Harper, 54-16, to set up their Saturday surprise party for highly regarded Newman.

The victories over Bowen and Harper were the first playoff victories for Byron since 2006.

Turnovers again were a key ingredient to a playoff victory.

In Byron’s win over Newman, senior defensive back Joshua Larson picked off three passes, including a 55-yard pick-six, to give the Tigers a 9-6 lead.

The last two Larson interceptions were in the last minute and a half to thwart Newman drives.

After Newman regained a 12-9 lead, Byron marched 65 yards and went ahead to stay on senior halfback Ethan Spickler’s 8-yard touchdown run with 5:16 left.

After the team got pinned down on its 1-yard line with under a half-minute left, Tigers coach Jeff Boyer elected to take a safety, which concluded the scoring.

Wilmington is led by a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in senior Nick McWilliams and junior Nick Hawkins. McWilliams has tallied 1,283 yards and 22 touchdowns. Hawkins has rushed for 1,054 yards and 13 touchdowns. Both are among the top 10 rushers in the area. Williams has scored 132 points.

The Wilmington defense is led by Kirchner, who picked up his sixth sack of the playoffs. Senior linebacker Mason Del Angel got his third, and junior linebacker Jake Capwell notched his first.

“We’re going to enjoy this one tonight and then get back to work for Byron,” Wilmington coach Jeff Reents said minutes after the quarterfinal victory.

Undefeated Williamsville (12-0), from outside Springfield, will host downstate Mount Carmel (10-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the other Class 3A semifinal.

If the Wildcats are victorious, they will take on the winner of that game for the Class 3A state championship at 4 p.m. Nov. 28 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

received good news when it picked up a berth in the NCAA Midwest Regional.

The Flyers (22-7) earned the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 seed Ferris State on Thursday in the opening round.

The No. 1 seed in the region is Truman State. However, the Midwest Regional will be hosted by No. 3 seed Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.

The selection is the 14th NCAA bid in Lewis program history. It also is the ninth consecutive season Lewis has earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The streak is the longest of all women’s volleyball teams in the Midwest Region and longest of any Lewis program since the Flyers joined the NCAA Division II ranks in 1981.

ARARAT, Va – Johnny Kringas, a junior at Lockport, raced to a third-place finish in the U.S. Legend Cars Dirt Nationals SemiPro Division last week at Rolling Thunder Speedway.

The race capped off the season for Kringas, who competed in nearly 50 U.S. Legend Cars races on both dirt and asphalt in the Semi-Pro Division with nine first-place finishes, 18 seconds and nine thirds. Kringas raced in more than five states over the sixmonth season. He finished 28th in the country on asphalt and third on dirt.

White Sox OK $15 million, 3-year deal with Zach Duke to boost ailing bullpen THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox boosted their bullpen Tuesday, reaching agreement with left-hander Zach Duke on a $15 million, three-year contract.

Duke, 31, will get $4.5 million next season, $5 million in 2016 and $5.5 million in 2017.

Duke flourished in his lone season with Milwaukee, going 5-1 with a 2.45 ERA in a career-high 74 appearances. He joins a bullpen that ranked 28th in the majors with a 4.38 ERA and a team

that went 73-89 last season after losing 99 the previous year. But with Chris Sale leading the starting rotation and AL Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu in the middle of the lineup, the White Sox believe they can turn things around sooner than later.

“If you get the right group of guys together that believe and don’t care what people outside the door say, then special things can happen,” Duke said. “I feel like I can impart some knowledge and maybe some wisdom on some of the younger guys and help them

realize the ability is there because there are quality young players within that clubhouse.”

General manager Rick Hahn called Duke “one of the most desirable relievers out on the market” and said the White Sox targeted him early on. He said pitching coach Don Cooper had lunch with the pitcher a while ago and came away impressed.

Hahn also said acquiring Duke is just a start, that the White Sox still hope to add to their bullpen and acquire a left-handed hitter for the middle of the order.

Grading Bears, not opponent Let’s start with this: The Bears as a team get a B+ for showing up Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

I can’t give them an A because at an average salary of about $1.9 million and perhaps more meaningfully a median salary of just under $800,000, you’d expect every player in the league to show up for work every day.

But the fact is the Bears hadn’t shown up in almost a month, and with the mood around town spiraling out of control it would have been easy for the Bears to pack it in for the season.

More about how and why that happened at a different time I’m sure, but for now it is to the credit of those coaches and leaders we thought had lost control and/or didn’t exist that they played hard and won.

Others have discounted the Bears’ effort because the Vikings are, well, the Vikings, but the fact is that doesn’t really matter.

That’s who was put on the schedule for them, and the Bears took care of business.

Individually, the Bears’ grades are all over the board.

From what I’ve heard and read, Jay Cutler has received very positive reviews. From me he gets a B -.

His 330 passing yards, 72 percent completion rate and three touchdowns are nice, and I don’t really care about the first interception. It was a throw-away play.

But his second pick was classic bad Jay at a critical time that

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush might have really hurt against a better team, he would have lost another fumble had the officials not blown the call and had the Vikings bothered to try, and 21 points on 468 yards of offense, 74 plays and 38:28 of possession is nowhere near enough.

The blame for that gets shared but starts with the quarterback.

Matt Forte, Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall all earned A’s, and you really don’t need me to explain, do you?

When you watch the tape you find individual offensive linemen breaking down on every play – Kyle Long the least, Brian De La Puente the most – but as a unit they were effective in neutralizing the greatest strength of the Vikings, their defensive front.

And unlike most games under coach Marc Trestman and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer, they did it with just five linemen on the field as opposed to six for almost the entire game.

They only get a B, however, as Forte did a ton of the groundwork on his own in spite of some missed blocks.

The Bears’ defense played its second-best game of the year after the Falcons game.

It seems clear by now that Jared Allen is not the pass rusher he was, but he is still a fine allaround end, and Sunday he was

the best defensive player on the field for either team.

Allen’s effort pushed the defensive line from a C+ to a B. Lance Briggs also played very well. Not great but very well.

Jon Bostic continues to improve, and while Shea McClellin and D.J. Williams were average to slightly below, they were on the field for only 18 snaps as the Bears were in nickel coverage 62 percent of the time.

The linebackers scored a B. Tim Jennings and Ryan Mundy each played their best games of the season, with the secondary holding the Vikings to 5.6 yards a pass play.

I gave the secondary a B+.

Chris Conte was average, and Kyle Fuller is still not back to the level he was at before injuries started to pile up on him.

Special teams are still a problem, and they get an F for the Vikings game. Robbie Gould missed a 47-yard field goal, Pat O’Donnell averaged less than 30 yards a punt, the Vikings picked up 48 yards on a fake punt, and Chris Williams still has no idea when to bring a kickoff out of the end zone. That’s a mess.

All in all, the Bears quieted the masses, found some self-respect and got themselves a win. It was a nice day’s work.

Now we all just have to hope it doesn’t have a seven-day half-life.

Wilmington nutrition coach recommends a plant-based diet

Cyd Notter, a certified health coordinator with Ohiobased The Wellness Forum, learned that the hard way.

Twenty years ago, Notter became interested in animal welfare, eliminating meat from her diet and substituting with cheese and even junk food.

Notter’s cholesterol increased, and her bone health and iron stores declined, she said.

Today, Notter advocates a plant-based diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. The Wilmington resident shares her knowledge and experiences, teaching classes and hosting quarterly potlucks.

“I like to do a nutrition quiz as an ice-breaker,” Notter said. “Which has more cholesterol – three ounces of chicken, fish or beef?”

People tend to say, “beef,” Notter said, although each of these animal products has similar amounts of cholesterol. Notter also believes excess calcium contributes to heart disease, accelerates aging, stiffens joints and accelerates bone loss.

“It’s a big shock for people to hear that calcium is bad for bones,” Notter said.

A plant-based diet can provide 400 to 500 milligrams of calcium a day, sufficient if one is not eating animal foods, Notter said. One orange provides about 100 grams of calcium, Notter said.

It was by chance that Notter learned about plant-based diets.

The Wellness Forum hosted a Wellness 101 class locally, which Notter attended.

Dear Doctor K: You recently wrote about e-cigarettes not being safe for teens. What about hookahs? I don’t completely understand what they are. Are they OK for my teen? I think he might be smoking them.

Dear Reader: A hookah is a water pipe that people use to smoke a specially made tobacco.

Often the tobacco used in hookahs is flavored, which makes smoking it more attractive to some people.

A hookah uses coal to burn the tobacco. This creates either smoke or a vapor that is inhaled through a tube. People usually smoke a hookah as a group, passing the mouthpiece from one person to another.

Hookah smoking is on the rise among youth.

According to a 2014 study in the journal Pediatrics, 18 percent of high school seniors have smoked a hookah.

Hookahs have been around for centuries. In ancient Persia and Asia, smoking a hookah was considered an aristocratic and elegant thing to do.

Perhaps because of this reputation – and because it’s an ancient practice – many people think that it isn’t as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. But it is just as dangerous, if not more so.

The smoke you inhale from a hookah contains the smoke from both coal and tobacco, which are full of toxins and cancer-causing substances.

In fact, tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer.

The smoke also has nicotine. Nicotine, by itself, does not cause cancer – but it is the chemical that makes people addicted to tobacco.

Smoking a hookah increases all the same health risks as smoking a cigarette. This includes

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff cancers of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, lung, bladder and other parts of the body. It can lead to lung disease, cardiovascular disease, infertility, and low birth weight in the babies of women who smoke hookahs.

Also, because the mouthpiece is often passed from person to person, there is the risk of passing infection.

Since hookahs are smoked as a group, the smoking session may last a while, which can lead to more exposure to the toxins.

A person smoking a hookah with a group of other people not only is exposed to the smoke he deliberately sucks into his body through the tube.

He is also exposed to smoke in the air around him, which typically is heavy. As a result, an hour of hookah smoking exposes someone to as much as 200 times the smoke as smoking a cigarette.

Smoking a hookah may be more appealing to teens than smoking cigarettes.

First, there’s the novelty of the device itself.

Second is the fact that it’s a group activity – and it’s particularly important for teens to feel like part of a group.

Your teen may think that smoking a hookah is just something fun to do with his friends.

Tell him about the health risks involved. Be sure to let him know that he and his friends could end up putting their health, even their lives, in danger if they continue the practice.

Straight people are not “turned gay” because they have lesbian or gay friends.
