JOLIET – No evidence had been sent as of Tuesday afternoon to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding Joliet City Councilman Jim McFarland’s use of public resources for political mailings.

The city Nov. 2 put out a news release saying it was referring findings to the county state’s attorney that McFarland had used City of Joliet envelopes for political mailings.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County, where McFarland was an employee until Nov. 4, is investigating McFarland’s use of a district postage machine.

A spokesman for State’s Attorney James Glasgow said Tuesday afternoon that no information has been sent to the office for review.

nahan said he planned to send over materials on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the Forest Preserve District of Will County said Tuesday that results of an internal investigation will be sent to the state’s attorney when it is completed.

Meanwhile, McFarland’s attorney said he is not sure if anything will come from the city and forest preserve investigations.

“I don’t know what will be sent to the state’s attorney’s office,” attorney George Lenard said. “Depending on what Mr. Glasgow decides to do, that will determine the next step that we will take.”

Lenard added that he was not sure what the purpose would be of sending anything to the state’s attorney’s office.

“Are they looking for a second opinion? Are they looking for a charge to be filed? I don’t know,” he said. “Nothing may

even happen.”

Shanahan said he was waiting because more McFarland letters were coming back to City Hall as late as Monday.

The state’s attorney’s office wanted everything in hand before it reviewed the situation, Shanahan said.

City officials initially learned of the mailings when they came back to City Hall because the address could not be found.

“I’m going to send it over tomorrow,” Shanahan said Tuesday.

Shanahan said 23 letters have come back to City Hall from three different mailings using city envelopes.

They include a letter McFarland sent to residents of the Reedwood neighborhood informing them about a community meeting concerning a cellphone monopole planned for that area.

JTHS Santa Run scheduled for Nov. 28 The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The JTHS Alumni Association on Nov. 28 will continue the holiday tradition that began in 2013. More than 500 Santa “impersonators” will participate in the third annual Santa Run 5K/Santa Stroll 1 Mile Walk through the streets of downtown Joliet.

Children and infants in decorated strollers add to the festivities. The Santas will begin the race at 9 a.m. at the Joliet Central High School field house. The finish line returns the Santas to Joliet Central for

a festive, fun after-race party.

When confronted by the resident, the man became angry and quickly left, according to the statement. He appeared to be communicating with someone in a brown or tan older Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Yukon.

According to Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner, the suspect is a man who is in his mid-20s to 30s, stands between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet tall, and

weighs 170 to 210 pounds.

The suspect was carrying a clipboard, Roechner said, adding that residents are encouraged to call police if they see anyone who looks out of place.

Man who posed as ComEd employee sought

JOLIET – Police are seeking a man who recently knocked on a Joliet resident’s door while posing as a ComEd employee, according to a statement posted Monday afternoon to the Joliet Police Department’s Facebook page.

The incident occurred at 6:50 p.m. Nov. 5 in the 1100 block of North Center Street.

Shanahan said the city questioned the appropriateness of using city envelopes because the letter indicated the mailing was paid for by McFarland.

Two other mailings announced a Facebook page for lost pets that McFarland had started and a free breakfast he held for veterans.

Forest Preserve District spokeswoman Cindy Cain in response to questions from The Herald-News said in an email that the district continued to investigate the matter.

“Once the internal review is complete, we will be forwarding the results to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office,” Cain said.

She also said in the email that McFarland “has reimbursed the District for a portion of the postage in question; however it is undetermined if that amount is sufficient.”

Families of pancreatic cancer patients try to spread awareness More online

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Margaret Stachon was headed in Monday to her biweekly chemotherapy session before her doctor, Sonia Baweja, recommended a break from the treatment during their pretherapy checkup.

Baweja told Stachon her platelet counts were a little low, which was her body’s way of telling her to take it easy on the radiation.

Stachon, a 79-year-old Plainfield resident and patient at Edward Cancer Center, is entering the eighth month since her pancreatic cancer diagnosis. She has responded well to chemotherapy.

“She still cleans and mops the floor,” said Stachon’s daughter, Clara Gleason.

Gleason and her father, Andy, and daughter, Sara, joined her mother in the checkup.

“I don’t feel bad after the treatments,” Stachon said.

“I’d love to go back to work.”

The good progress puts Stachon in the fortunate minority of pancreatic cancer patients.

“Someone once said, ‘Pancreatic cancer gives oncology a bad name,’ ” said Dr. Lawrence Schilder, medical director for oncology at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital.

Schilder was talking about pancreatic cancer’s reputation for not responding well to cancer drugs. It has confounded the world’s oncologists on how it’s formed, what causes it and how to effectively treat it.

But research has to be appropriately funded to get those answers. And pancreatic cancer hasn’t received the same support other cancers get, despite November being dedicated to awareness of the disease.

Deadly cancer

According to data provided by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and is on track to become the second-leading cause by 2020.

It has a five-year survival rate of 7 percent, and about 72 percent of patients will die in the first year. In 2015, almost 50,000 people will be diagnosed and just over 40,000 will die.

The grim numbers are part of the reason oncologists suggest patients and their families not research the disease, Schilder said.

“In that conversation, [the oncologist] did say to us, ‘Don’t go home and search the Internet. It isn’t going to help you,’ ” said Nora Campos, a Plainfield resident who six years ago lost her 45-year-old husband, Javier Campos, to pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Sanjiv Modi, a medical oncologist at Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates, said there are a few credible organizations patients can go to for information, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, National Comprehensive Cancer Network and ClinicalTrials.gov.

Javier’s story is similar to those of many diagnosed with

the disease. He woke up one day in June and wasn’t feeling well. When Nora saw him, he was jaundiced.

They went to their doctor, then the emergency room, where they were notified of a late-stage tumor in his pancreas.

“We both knew the second they said that, even without biopsy or staging, it was bad,”

Nora Campos said.

Javier pushed through chemotherapy. But after seven months of fighting, the Marine veteran felt so sick the couple and their two daughters made the tough decision to put Javier in hospice care.

He died nine months after being diagnosed.

Treatment

Part of what makes pancreatic cancer so quick and deadly is the location of the pancreas within the body.

“It’s an organ in a relatively hidden place,” said Dr.

City will take over subdivision’s streets Council members said they could support the Ketone Partners project as long as the developer understood the plans could be delayed by bridge construction.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city will take over two streets in the Country Club Villas despite a warning from staff that it could lead to other private subdivisions seeking the same treatment.

The City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously without discussion to take over maintenance and plowing for the two streets. But comments made at a workshop meeting Monday suggested council members agreed with residents that Country Club Villas was unique because the development was cut short by the recession and never became the gated community originally designed.

Joliet attorney Michael Hansen, who represented the residents, said later that he believed the city could make a distinction between Country Club Villas and other subdivisions that might want the city to take over streets.

There are seven attached homes in two buildings in Country Club Villas, where construction started shortly before the recession.

Resident Randy Bushen said after the vote the he was “shocked” to by the council vote after having heard staff opposition at a committee meeting in October.

“That was overwhelming,” Bushen said. “It seemed a couple of weeks ago we were going

in the wrong direction.”

Houbolt Road bridge

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said he is confident that a proposed Houbolt Road bridge that would cross the Des Plaines River to connect the CenterPoint Intermodal Center with Interstate 80 will be built.

O’Dekirk told a developer

planning a distribution site with a barge facility for quarry operations at an industrial site at Route 6 and Houbolt Road that the project could be delayed by bridge construction.

“What we’re hearing is that bridge is most likely going to be a reality,” O’Dekirk said.

“It’s going to happen in the next few years.”

The council voted 5-3 in favor of a Work Order Management System that would use GIS mapping designed to improve efficiency in the utilities department but cost $964,000 to implement.

The council had twice before delayed votes on the system because of concerns about operating costs in the utilities department and proposed hikes in water and sewer rates. Utilities Director James Eggen said the system is needed, would save $40,000 a month in operating costs, and would be used by other city departments.

Voting no were John Gerl, Larry Hug and Jim McFarland.

Walgreens liquor

Liquor licenses were approved for four Walgreens stores at 1163 W. Jefferson St., 2101 W. Jefferson St., 1514 Essington Road and 4822 Caton Farm Road.

Joliet High School District 204 proposes tax levy

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As Joliet Township High School District 204 officials propose this year’s tax levy, they’re noticing property values continue to decline within the district.

District officials are proposing a total levy of about $65.7 million, a roughly 5 percent increase over last year’s tax extension. The tax levy goes toward funds such as transportation, education, life safety, special education and others.

The levy will be on public display Wednesday, and the Board of Education will con-

sider adopting it Dec. 15.

The overall assessed value for properties within District 204 continues to decline. Last year, property values were at about $2.5 billion within the district, a 1.51 percent decrease from the previous year.

The decrease was not as low as what district officials projected, said Ilandus Hampton, assistant superintendent of business services.

“Which means hopefully the economy is stabilizing as it relates to the housing market,” he said.

District officials are projecting a 2.16 percent decrease in property values for this

Honoring board members

Several high-achieving students from Central and West campuses came to Tuesday’s board meeting to honor the board members for their service to the district. Superin-

One of the students was Kassandra Caceres, a West student who is part of the health and medicine academy.

She will represent District 204 and the state as a delegate at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston.

“Overall, I think high school has done a great job of preparing me for college because I have had many great teachers who have given extra time out of their lives to help me with any questions and concerns with my future,” Caceres said.

Route 30 road closure expected to open Friday

Next phase of construction won’t require detour PLAINFIELD – The Route 30 road closure between Route 59 and Renwick Road will reopen Friday – weather permitting – the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

IDOT also stated that work will begin in early December on the section of Route 30 that was open between Renwick Road and Interstate 55, according to a news release from IDOT. But lanes will not permanently close during that part of construction and entrances to businesses will remain open.

“They will be completing a lot of the underground utility connections, [such as] storm

water, sanitary,” said village engineer Scott Threewitt, who met Tuesday morning with IDOT officials.

Threewitt said there may be different traffic patterns and times when construction crews have to flag traffic, but traffic will be able to flow through.

Route 30 has been closed between Route 59 and Renwick Road since mid-July, causing Route 30 traffic to reroute on Renwick Road. The road was resurfaced and widened as part of a larger project along the 2-mile stretch of Route 30 between Route 59 and I-55.

The project involves several stages, which are expected to culminate with the expansion of Route 30 to four lanes from I-55 to Renwick Road and

a three-lane road with a center turn lane from Renwick Road to Route 59.

Multi-use paths and other amenities that are part of the project will be constructed next year, Threewitt said.

The Route 30 closure has caused several headaches for motorists over the past five months.

On Sept. 2, construction crews hit a gas line, causing the closure of the Renwick Road and Route 30 intersection. Road paving started mid-September, leading to some delays as trucks transferred materials to the site.

A week later, traffic from the homecoming parade and Harvest 5K race exacerbated the issue.

Coal City High School stages armed intruder drill COAL CITY – Principal Mitch Hamann’s voice was heard over the speakers in each room Tuesday morning at Coal City High School asking teachers and students to “take cover.”

Members of the Coal City Police Department, along with Lt. Nick Doerfler from the Coal City Fire District, were in the school’s office preparing to run through an armed intruder drill – just one of the many types of drills required by law for the school district.

“It’s mandated that the schools do a drill once a year.

We go into each of the local schools for the drills,” Coal City Police Sgt. Chris Harseim said.

Police Sgt. Tom Logan said Tuesday’s drill was a soft drill, done to make sure teachers and students are trained in how to respond if an armed intruder made his or her way into the school.

“The soft drill is more for them,” he said.

Police officers participate in more realistic drills and are trained throughout the year on how to respond.

The officers spoke with administrative staff in the front office on what would happen

once an intruder entered the school.

“Don’t put yourself in danger,” Harseim said to the administrative assistants who work in the main office at the front of the building. “If you have the opportunity to flee, then flee and take whoever you can with you.”

He also told them that often they are the eyes and ears inside the school and should take note of how many people there are, if they are carrying weapons, and a description to relay to responding police officers.

Once the drill started, officers and administrative staff entered the hallways to determine how well the school did on the drill.

Teachers and students are instructed at the beginning of the school year what to do, and Hamann said the district has established protocol that includes locking the door between the classroom and the hall, drawing the blinds on the windows, and taking cover in the room with the lights out.

As Harseim and Assistant Principal Jennifer Kenney made their way down the hall, they pulled at each door to make sure it was locked and then peered in the windows of each classroom to see whether they could spot anyone inside.

They stopped at one door and knocked to see whether the teacher or students would open the door to let them in, and as taught, those inside ignored the knocks.

In another area of the building, school resource officer Detective Jason Clark and Doerfler canvassed bathrooms, the janitors’ room and the auditorium, looking to see whether they could find someone who was vulnerable to attack. They found no one.

As the police officers and staff met back up in the front office, they went over their findings. All agreed the drill couldn’t have gone better.

“It was awesomely done. It was 10 times better than before,” Hamann said.

All the doors that had people behind them were locked.

No staff or students could be seen through the windows in the doors, and the only sounds heard were the footsteps of those initiating the drill.

Harseim said he didn’t hear or see anyone on his walk through. It’s exactly what he hoped to find.

In addition to other security measures, students are told to turn their cellphones on silent and not use them. The light that emits from a phone could give away their location if an armed intruder was the one peering in the windows.

Dog park included in Forest Preserve District of Will County budget 9 JOLIET – Forest Preserve District of Will County officials have budgeted for a handful of major projects in its 2016 spending plan that include building a new dog park in eastern Will County, a preserve area and trail at the Kankakee Sands Preserve in Braidwood, and a more user-friendly website.

The district’s Board of Commissioners approved last week a $47.1 budget that includes a number of projects while also scaling back staff levels through an early retire-

ment incentive program and restructuring the district’s operations.

Even with grant dollars on hold, development plans for an access point at Burville Road to the Plum Valley Preserve in Crete is moving forward, said Ralph Schultz, the district’s chief operating officer.

The $1 million project would goes toward the development of the district’s sixth dog park, a new access area and the extension of a nearby trail.

Gov. Bruce Rauner earlier this year put award grants on hold in light of the state’s budget crisis. If $400,000 in

state funding does not come through for the project, the district would forgo the trail extension segment of the project, he said.

Although a new website wouldn’t be launched until 2017, district officials are excited about improvements planned for the organization’s online presence, Schultz said.

Under the recently approved spending plan, the district has set aside about $175,000 in preliminary costs for the site redesign, though the figure could change, Schultz said.

Schultz said the website was last redesigned in 2009.

“That doesn’t sound like a long time ago, but technology changes so fast,” Schultz said.

The website remains incompatible with mobile phones, though the number of users attempting to access the site via cellphone has drastically increased over the years.

Schultz said he envisions park users being able to report vandalism, map out plans with interactive maps, and

register for programming or event permits – all from a cellphone.

“Right now, you have to come to a facility to apply for a permit,” Schultz said.

About $650,000 is set aside for a new preserve access area and trail at Kankakee Sands Preserve in Braidwood. Engineering for the Black Road project is also included in the 2016 budget.

The board Monday also heard of the progress of senior apartments planned for the Channahon Town Center. Jim Roberts, developer for Catholic Charities, which is in negotiations to buy a block of land from the Catholic Diocese of Joliet for the residences, said the four, three-story buildings would each contain 12 apartments that will provide affordable housing for seniors

of modest income.

Monthly rents on the oneand two-bedroom units could range from $350 to $850, and more than 25 percent of the residents will likely receive financial assistance.

“They are designed for an independent lifestyle,” Roberts said of the units.

Each apartment will have an attached garage, and some will be set aside for those with sensory impairments and disabilities.

Roberts said the plan is to

begin building by April 2016, but after the meeting, village staff said there were still several steps left in the process before village approval, including evaluating whether the plans meet the criteria of Channahon’s Town Center design standards.

CHANNAHON – Presented with a choice of six scenarios for the amount of the preliminary tax levy, the Channahon Village Board agreed Monday with Finance Director Heather Wagonblott’s recommendation to prepare documents to seek a 2015 total levy of $2.261 million.

That amount is more than $250,000 higher than last year’s levy. However, Wagonblott said, last year’s levy was about $102,000 less than that of the previous year.

The preliminary levy figure is based on an estimated equalized assessed valuation of $287.7 million and could result in a tax rate of 0.786 per $100 of owned property. That rate, according to Wagonblott, is higher than last year’s rate.

The 2014 tax rate for the village was 0.7208, which the village had kept constant from

2013.

If the amount of the levy is approved by the board next month, it could mean an annual increase on the village’s portion of residential property tax bills of $43.47 for a home valued at $200,000 and of $54.33 for a home valued at $250,000.

Wagonblott stressed that these were preliminary numbers and the levy could be lower. There are many uncertainties in the calculations of this year’s levy, she said, such as the financial situation of the state. Illinois owes Channahon $90,000 in motor-fuel tax allotments, she said, and there also is talk of a property -tax freeze in the state.

Other considerations in this year’s levy, Wagonblott said, are decreases in state and local sales-tax revenue, telecommunications taxes and motor-fuel taxes.

About 15 years ago, cytarabine was the only known drug that had an effect on pancreatic cancer patients. But that effect mostly helped patients feel better until they died, Schilder said.

Three years ago, a breakthrough led to a combination of drugs increasing response rates from 9 percent to 32 percent, Schilder said.

“Developments are coming from the immunotherapy room,” Schilder said. “We

may have played out our hand of chemotherapy, but we can add another pillar to the treatment.”

Hantel said science has not led to a lot of clues and treatments, but that may be beginning to change with laboratory results showing genetic clues to pancreatic cancer that could help find better treatments.

Funding research

“Compared to breast cancer research, it gets a very small percent of the funding,” Hantel said. “I’m not saying breast cancer doesn’t need funding. But pancreatic has a lot of catching up to do.”

In fiscal 2013, the National Cancer Institute’s breast cancer research investment totaled $559.2 million. Pancreatic cancer research investment was $101.9 million. Prostate cancer received $255.6 million.

Hantel suggested one reason for the disparity was pancreatic cancer “doesn’t have a political constituency.” It attacks men, women, children, middle-aged adults and seniors.

“It’s uniquely aggressive and refractory to treatment,” Hantel said.

That’s why Nora Campos chose to do something about it after her husband died.

She went to a local affiliate meeting of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in Plainfield and found her calling.

Now she is the co-advocacy chairwoman of the network in Illinois. Her oldest daughter is the advocacy chairwoman for Indiana.

Nora Campos and Plainfield volunteer Melissa Kline, whose father is battling pancreatic cancer, recently have spurred resolutions in Plainfield and Joliet, and the state proclaiming Nov. 13 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day. For Kline, the fight is at home, where the hospice social worker left her job to take care of her father, Simon Nackovic.

At the end of January 2014, on a Wednesday, Nackovic started to have some stomach issues. By Saturday morning, he was in intensive care dealing with jaundice and heart problems.

Nackovic finished cargoplaten treatment in February, but was reintroduced to the chemotherapy drug after his pancreatic tumor spread to the liver.

“His quality of life is definitely different now,” Kline said. “He gave up driving. He is appreciative a lot. He sees things a lot differently. I know he’s really tired.”

Her father’s struggle is why Kline decided to actively advocate for awareness.

“To have a disease that is so deadly and affects so many people, and it’s still not funded for much research, that’s unacceptable,” Kline said.

Plainfield man arrested last month at JJC

JOLIET – A Plainfield man was arrested for allegedly threatening a former girlfriend last month on the campus of Joliet Junior College.

JJC Police Chief Pete Comanda said Tuesday that Moegamatzane Johannes, 21, and the 20-year-old woman had problems when their relationship ended.

“On Oct. 21, she notified police that he had been outside in her car and then showed officers

threatening text messages he’d sent,” Comanda said.

Officers located Johannes outside the school and arrested him on misdemeanor charges of telephone harassment and disorderly conduct.

Johannes, of the 1600 block of Stanton Lane, was arrested on domestic battery charges by Joliet police in November 2014, according to Will County Jail records.

Van Buren Street to close for ‘Empire’ filming

JOLIET – The Joliet Police Department announced Van Buren Street will be closed Wednesday between Chicago and Scott streets.

The street will be closed for filming of the TV show “Empire.”

Several large trucks are expected to be parked along Scott Street behind the Rialto Square Theatre, police said.

JOLIET – Police are seeking the driver in a high-speed crash that critically injured a passenger early Sunday in Joliet.

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said that at 12:14 a.m. a green 2000 Chevrolet Impala was traveling east on Theodore Street when it went to pass another car near Hosmer Street.

“The Impala rolled off the roadway to the south side of the street, where it struck a tree and spun around in the parkway to face west,” he said.

Gregory said the driver and two passengers fled from the crashed car, but a 22-year-old Joliet man who’d been sitting in the rear passenger seat remained in the car with “critical injuries.” He was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and later flown to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Shortly after the crash, Crest Hill police intercepted Leonel Duran-Rojas, 22, a passenger who allegedly fled, Gregory said.

Duran-Rojas was arrested on a charge of obstructing justice.

About 1 a.m. Noë Ramos-Flores, 26, came into Saint Joseph with a serious head injury he claimed to have gotten in a fight, Gregory said. After being questioned by police, Ramos-Flores admitted to being a passenger in the Impala and also was charged with obstructing justice, Gregory said.

Gregory said Tuesday that police have identified the driver and were seeking a Joliet man for questioning but declined to identify the suspect.

Most buyers finance a substantial portion of the purchase price for a home with a mortgage loan from a lending institution. The purchase agreement should contain a carefully worded provision that it is sub-ject to the buyer’s obtaining a commit-ment for financing.

After the purchase agreement is signed, it is necessary to establish the state of the seller’s title to the property to the buyer’s and the finance institution’s satisfaction.

Without a lawyer to guide you, the con-sequences may be more disastrous than purchasing a car that turns out to be a lemon, or a stock investment that was unwise.

The letter tells my client that the U.S. Government Federal Citizen Information Center urges her and all property owners to have an official or certified copy of their deed.

All my client has to do to get a “Certified Copy of [her] Deed” is to complete the order form or call a toll-free number with her credit card information. The fee for this service is fht esum of only $79.50. Please be advised as follows: Karen Stukel, our Will County Recorder of Deeds, will provide this service for $1.00 per page, and most deeds are only two pages! This is the time of year for the roving repairmen. A typical scam is: They ring your doorbell after they have given your chimney a free “examination” without your permission and tell you that you have cracks in the chimney that need immediate repair. Don’t fall for this one! What they have probably done is put their ladder up against your chimney and givien it a good shove. What they have done is trespassed on your property and caused damage to your home. If you can, without danger to yourself, get their license plate number and call the police. If you haven’t called the repairmen, don’t let them “fix” anything in or on your home.

DIANE M. CHILETZ Diane M. Chiletz (nee Kovach) On Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the age of 72, a precious soul was called home to rest in the light of the Lord following a courageous battle with cancer and COPD. Diane was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She married Dave W. Chiletz on August 5, 1967 and they spent 32 wonderful years together.

Diane and Dave moved from Cleveland to Plymouth, Indiana in 1975 where Diane worked as a kindergarten aid at St. Michael’s School. They moved to Shorewood in September of 1984.

Diane worked at St. Jude School, St. Francis Academy in the dean’s office and at the Shorewood Water Department. She was hired as a records clerk for the Shorewood Police Department where she worked tirelessly for the next 22 years. She loved her job, not only because it allowed her to help people, but also because being around police officers made her feel closer to her brother, who was killed in the line of duty in 1984. She retired this April after a beautiful ceremony at the Shorewood Village Hall reflecting on her phenomenal years of service.

Diane was treasurer for the Shorewood COPS Organization since its inception and was a devoted member of Holy Family Church in Shorewood. There she met many friends who became her family.

Diane enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and after church dinners with her friends.

She loved watching the game show network and playing slots with her husband. Her love of music and life inspired everyone around her. Her beautiful smile will live on in the hearts of everyone who was blessed to know her. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her loving children, two sons, David Chiletz and Daryl (Dawn) Chiletz; and one daughter, Dawn Steczynski (Jason); two granddaughters, Claire Chiletz and Jaiden Chiletz; two grandsons, Tyler and Ryan Steczynski; as well as her precious furry baby, Dexter.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dave W. Chiletz; her brother, Patrolman Stephen M. Kovach; and her parents, Stephen and Anna Kovach.

Born January 4, 1943 in Memphis, Tennessee, Camille was a daughter of the late Sim and Frances Fisher-Levey.

She was raised and educated in Memphis, and on October 30, 1968, Camille married Elrie Robert Floyd in Geneva.

Survivors include her husband, Bob; five children, Daniel (Deborah) Floyd of Virginia, Penny (Steve) Maas of Florida, Kim Noe of Florida, Don (Pat) Newton of Mississippi and Michelle (late Joseph) Nilles of Minooka; grandchildren, great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Sharon Levey; and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many good friends.

“Pause” was the word used by both new House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, urging at least a temporary halt in the resettlement of Syrians and disputing Obama administration claims the small numbers making their way here so far are being thoroughly investigated.

The administration showed no sign of backing off its plans to bring an additional 10,000 Syrian refugees to the U.S. and mounted a hasty defense of its vetting process, which Attorney General Loretta Lynch assured Congress is “robust.”

Yet there were signs Democratic allies might abandon

the White House on the issue. Chuck Schumer of New York, the third-ranking Senate Democrat, broke with most in his party and told reporters a pause in accepting Syrian refugees “may be necessary.”

Schumer’s comment underscored what could become an increasingly uncomfortable position for Democrats as worried voters seek assurances Friday’s carnage in the streets of Paris will not be repeated here. Some lawmakers pointed to indications one of the Islamic State attackers carried a Syrian passport and may have arrived in France among waves of desperate refugees. Yet Germany’s top security official said the passport might have been a fake intended to stoke fears.

Amid the uncertainty, Ryan confronted an unexpected foreign policy test in his third week on the job. Ahead of a classified briefing Tuesday evening for lawmakers, he assembled a task force of committee chairmen to bring refugee legislation to the floor as soon as this week.

“This is a moment where it’s better to be safe than to be

sorry,” he said. “So we think the prudent, the responsible thing is to take a pause in this particular aspect of this refugee program in order to verify that terrorists are not trying to infiltrate the refugee population.”

McConnell echoed that call within hours, remarking: “It’s pretty clear how the American people feel about this.”

After an initial meeting of the House GOP task force Tuesday, aides to Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said the focus of legislation would be on stopping Syrian refugee resettlement until the administration can offer assurances no terrorists are being admitted, including via FBI background investigations. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the vetting process should be made stronger if possible and the White House was looking at how to do so.

On the campaign trail, GOP presidential candidates denounced the Obama administration’s strategy against the Islamic State group that has claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks.

Her supporters, including U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, Illinois’ highest-ranking Democrat, say she’s best candidate to take on Kirk, who suffered a debilitating stroke in 2012.

HARVEY – A former professional football player-turned-Illinois lawmaker joined the Democratic race for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, setting up a three-way contest for the chance to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, one of Democrats’ top targets as they try to retake the chamber.

State Sen. Napoleon Harris returned to his former high school’s athletic building in Harvey to announce he’s challenging Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth and former Chicago Urban League CEO Andrea Zopp in the March primary.

Both Zopp and Harris are African-American, leading to speculation they could split the African-American vote and help Duckworth – who has the backing of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and is considered the favorite in the race so far – seal the nomination.

But both candidates rejected that idea. Zopp said her reach is “much broader than the African-American community,” and Harris said he has his own base of support.

“You play to win the game,” said Harris, who owns a chain of pizza restaurants and was first elected to office in 2012.

Kirk, a former congressman who won his first Senate term in 2010, faces a tougher election climate this time with a presidential race at the top of the 2016 ballot. Illinois last voted for a Republican presidential candidate during George H.W. Bush’s landslide victory in 1988, and before Kirk took office, the state had only elected one GOP candidate to the Senate since 1968.

He’s also been dogged by gaffes in recent months, including calling Sen. Lindsey Graham a “bro with no ho” because the South Carolina Republican is single. The comment was picked up by a live microphone; Kirk later apologized.

Duckworth, a two-term congresswoman from Chicago’s northwest suburbs who

lost both legs when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq, raised more money than Kirk in the most recent quarter and has a healthy advantage over Zopp and Harris.

Dunkin is challenging Madigan in statehouse SPRINGFIELD – Governors, mayors and legislators come and go.

House Speaker Michael J. Madigan remains.

He has ruled the Illinois House for all but two of the last 32 years, and the political corpses of those who’ve crossed him pile up with regularity.

But one of his own, Democratic state Rep. Ken Dunkin, strayed recently, and that appears to be frustrating the speaker.

Madigan needs every one of his 71 Democrats to show up and stay united if he is to thwart first-term Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on their bigger battles.

But Dunkin refuses to play.

Three times in the last couple of months, Dunkin has refused to follow the speaker’s lead and let measures important to his party leader die on the House floor.

Madigan rarely speaks ill of any member of his caucus. So, at his last new conference, he brought in three nonlawmakers and let them badmouth Dunkin.

Madigan is a disciplined operator, and he expects adherence from his members.

Dunkin, on the other hand, marches to his own drummer – some say in a parade of one.

Years ago, he flipped the bird to the entire House when a bill he was sponsoring didn’t pass. Even in a chamber known for raucous debate, that’s out of line.

Madigan, on the other hand, comes from a world of discipline. He was reared by a strict father, attended Catholic schools and universities, and was mentored by the late Mayor Richard J. Daley.

In an oral history released this year by the University of Illinois, this is how Madigan described his relationship with Daley: “He was the commander. He would give his orders and give his directions. And this is an important point with me. It’s because there was a group of people like myself, about the same age, that came in as ward committeemen in the early seventies. There was Alderman Burke, Ed

“This was the group there that came along at about the same time, and if they were being honest with you, they would tell you that they would have trouble living under his methods.

“So they were duly elected to whatever office they held. After a while, they would think, ‘Well, I ought to be part of the decision-making.’ So they would be troubled by that. ... But with me, I had no trouble with that at all. That was because, to me, the mayor was just a carbon copy of my father.”

That speaks volumes about Madigan. Madigan wants the members of his caucus to submit to his authority, much as he once yielded to Daley.

And now comes Dunkin.

Dunkin has taken to bypassing Madigan and negotiating directly with the governor.

For example, Rauner said Dunkin persuaded him to raise the eligibility requirement for families receiving child-care subsidies from 50 percent of the poverty level to 162 percent.

In exchange, Dunkin agreed not to support an override that would have stripped governors from making such adjustments in the future It’s the kind of deal Madigan hates. But for Dunkin, it was an infusion of power.

Overnight, Dunkin became one of the Legislature’s most influential members – at least for the moment.

So Madigan now is casting hard looks in Dunkin’s direction. But he also might want to look over his shoulder every now and then to make sure no one’s following Dunkin’s route of escape.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Not all government workers are crooks, and bad ones can be fired

To the Editor: At first glance, Scott Reeder’s latest op-ed – “Local, state government have accountability crisis,” which appeared Friday on page 20 of The Herald-News, would seem to be a simple commentary on the corrupt, late police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz of Fox Lake.

But who would have thought he could take that tragedy and conflate it in to another of his attacks on labor, and state employees in particular?

Have you no shame, Scott?

Yes, there are crooks everywhere, from corrupt public employees to corrupt doctors who cheat on Medicare claims, to corporations who knowingly sell faulty products. If you believe what Reeder states, it is impossible to fire a poorly performing public employee.

He is absolutely wrong. From my experience in education, I know there are policies and procedures for terminating

employees. The fact they are not followed and poor-performing employees don’t lose there jobs is not the fault of their bargaining representatives, but the fault of those in administration.

I have seen administrators who were too lazy or whatever not follow the policies on obviously clearly deserved dismissals. If anyone should be fired, it is perhaps they.

Bargaining agreements don’t protect poor employees, but guarantee for all employees a fair system – called due process – that protects them from being fired for dubious reasons. All that is required is the administration follow the policy, do its homework and present proof of the allegations.

Apparently, Reeder thinks it is quite OK to fire someone based on their looks, their dress, their hair, their age, their politics or any reason other under the sun, with no due process.

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Plainfield South and Joliet West girls basketball players started the season Tuesday night with their eyes on more than the scoreboard.

Plainfield South is looking to build on last season after the Cougars set a school record for wins and finished 12-17.

Joliet West coach John Placher is hopeful three returning starters will help the

Tigers improve on a 4-24 record.

It was Plainfield South that took the most positive first steps. The Cougars led, 39-18, after three quarters, withstood an 11-0 run by West to start the fourth and surged again for a 48-33 road victory.

Point guard Jaianna Brooks scored a game-high 20 points, including 18 through the first three quarters, to put South in control.

“It was a big start for us,’’

Brooks said. “We really want to start out this season really strong. Our goal was to win this game and start the season off right.’’

South trailed, 6-2, early and rallied to go ahead, 12-6, by the end of the opening quarter.

Brooks displayed her varied skills during the second quarter. The 5-foot-3 junior made a jumper, two free throws, scored on a drive to the basket and connected on two more jumpers. The last

one came just before the buzzer to give South a 28-15 halftime lead.

“I think at the start of the game we were just kind of jittery a little bit,’’ Brooks said.

“We had to keep it under control, run our plays a little more. Keep the pace down to our level. Once we got that down, our defense was good, and we calmed down.’’

Sophomore Anya Brooks contributed 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Se-

nior center Alyssa Fink pulled down 14 rebounds.

“This is a big year for us,’’ South coach Leah Carter said.

“I’ve got four seniors who’ve been with me since they were freshmen. There’s been a lot of improvement from all of them.

“It’s a good group. They’re really clicking.’’

Alando Tucker, Will Walker, James Augustine, Michael Thompson, Derrick Marks, Brian Bradley, Tavaras Hardy and Roger Powell Jr. What they have in common, in addition to being outstanding local basketball players, is they have been major attractions in the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic, at the University of St. Francis Sullivan Center, which annually kicks off a new boys season.

The 20th WJOL Classic will be played at USF from Monday through Saturday. WJOL Radio’s Scott Slocum, the tournament director in conjunction with St. Francis Director of Athletics Dave Laketa, thought about doing something special for the 20th.

all-time tournament team that we will announce next week during the tournament,” Slocum said Tuesday. “It won’t necessarily equate to college success – it’s more what kids have done in our tournament.”

Slocum said Walker and Tucker were two-time MVPs. Walker was quite a story as he made the all-tournament team four years, two while playing for Romeoville and two at Bolingbrook. He was the MVP

once for each school.

Lockport has been the winningest team over time. The Porters have captured eight titles, either tournament or pool.

These days, the tournament – whose field always is dominated by local teams – runs four days during Thanksgiving week. Pool play is scheduled Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Then, on Saturday, the finishers in each pool will square off against the corre-

sponding finishers from the other pool.

The teams in Group A this year are Joliet Central, Plainfield Central, Rich East and Romeoville. Lemont, Lockport, Minooka and Providence are in Group B. Lemont is in for the first time, replacing Joliet Catholic.

Rich East will face Joliet Central on Monday night at Central. Three games are on tap Monday at USF. The four

games Wednesday, four Friday and four Saturday all will be played at the Sullivan Center.

“It’s impressive how much of a tradition this tournament has become,” Slocum said.

“Our tournament is special because the schools have embraced it, and fans come out to watch it. The atmosphere we have, others have not been able to duplicate.

“The teams and coaches treat it like it is important.

These guys have been great.

We wouldn’t be where we are without their support.”

And, he said, a huge thankyou goes to St. Francis.

“St. Francis has been incredibly generous with the tournament, and there is nobody any more organized or better at running this sort of thing than Dave Laketa,” Slocum said.

This year’s tournament is being presented by Culver’s New Lenox/Lockport.

The Lincoln-Way Central Thanksgiving Tournament will give West its next opportunity for improvement.

“We have a lot of playing experience, and we have more depth than we had last year,’’ Placher said. “You just have to keep getting better. I think we’re going that way.’’

Dick Goss Most of the audience of about 700 remembered the 1985 world champion Bears, coached by Mike Ditka.

Not as many had memories of the 1963 Bears, a championship team with a tight end named Mike Ditka as one of many stars.

Ditka, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was the featured guest at last week’s Joliet Catholic Alumni Association Hilltopper Banquet in the Student Activity Center at JCA. Going one-on-one with Joliet Catholic’s own Mark Grant and then answering questions from the audience, Ditka was captivating.

When Ditka was asked if the ’85 Bears were the best team ever, he responded, “I played on a great team in ’63, too. There have been a lot of great teams. Our ’85 team maybe was the best defense ever. Our defense was fantastic. It wasn’t me, though. I just happened to be there when it happened.”

Ditka complimented that team’s defensive coordinator, Buddy Ryan, which raised eyebrows because of the stories about how the two did not get along.

“Buddy Ryan and I got to the point where it was a little scary at times,” Ditka admitted.

Back to his playing days, Ditka said, “When I was young, I was dumb.

“No tight ends were catching balls when I came into the league. But we had an offensive coordinator named Luke Johnsos. He had a quarterback, Billy Wade, who liked to throw me the ball, and I caught it.”

And that’s how he became the first of the great pass-catching tight ends.

The Bears drafted all-time great running back Gale Sayers in 1965.

“I played with Gale for two years,” Ditka said. “If he had played healthy for 10 years, I don’t think anyone would have broken his records.

“People always bring up that game against the 49ers when he scored six touchdowns. He was the only guy playing on a dry field that day.

He was amazing.”

Of course, Ditka coached another all-time great, the late Walter Payton.

“Walter Payton was so special that there was no way you could coach him to be better,” Ditka said.

“I played with another guy who was that special in Dallas named Roger Staubach. When you see leadership like he had, you just want to be part of it.”

Those who remember Ditka as a player know how physically he played the game. He also took his share of hits. He said 49ers defensive back Jimmy Johnson laid the biggest hit on him he ever absorbed.

What about the violence in

the game?

“I have three grandkids,” he said. “They’re 8, 9 and 10. I would never discourage them from playing football – well, I would not encourage the girl to play football – but if I had my druthers, I would put a golf club in their hand.

“The big thing is the helmet today has become such a weapon. That’s where the problem is.”

Ditka is the second player in NFL history to win a Super Bowl as a player (Dallas, 1972), assistant coach (Dallas, 1977) and head coach (Bears, 1986).

When he coached on Tom

Landry’s staff in Dallas, Ditka said he once “got overzealous on the sidelines and said something nasty about an official’s mother. So I got a 15yard penalty and tried to walk away and hide.

“So Tom Landry comes down and asks the official about the penalties. The official said it’s 15 yards for holding and 15 more because this guy [Ditka] said this or that. Tom just walked over to me and said if you ever do that again, you will be looking for another job.”

After leaving as coach of the Bears in 1992, Ditka did

return and take another head coaching job, that in 1997 with the New Orleans Saints. It did not go well.

“I’m glad I coached the Saints because of a lot of good friendships there,” Ditka said.

“But we gave away about 10 people to get Ricky Williams, and it didn’t work.”

For the last several years, he has been an NFL TV personality. Even before the Bears’ impressive victory Sunday at St. Louis, he predicted the victory the previous Monday night at San Diego “could be a stepping stone for the Bears.”

Yes, he still knows the game, which is a positive for those of us who are wishing Lockport graduate Mike Zimmer all the luck in the world as coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

“Mike Zimmer was a great assistant coach,” Ditka said.

“And, he is proving he is a good head coach.”

The Vikings are 7-2 and atop the NFC Central.

“Da Coach” knows his football, and then some. Anytime he wants to return to our area and talk with us again, he is more than welcome.

Offseasons focused on changing his body – burning fat and adding lean muscle in order to play longer, harder and faster – may have paid off for Penn State’s versatile forward. But Taylor didn’t get to fully test his new fitness levels in Penn State’s 68-62 win over DePaul on Tuesday.

Finding himself in foul trouble early, Taylor spent all but nine first-half min-

utes on Penn State’s bench.

He scored his first points, a 3-pointer at the buzzer, to give the Nittany Lions (2-0) a 31-25 halftime lead in a game they never trailed.

Taylor scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half, including Penn State’s first eight points of the half and a fourth 3-pointer that all but sealed the game with 44 seconds left.

Unbeaten Ohio State rolls past Grambling

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kam Williams scored 22 points as Ohio State coasted past Grambling on Tuesday night.

The Buckeyes (2-0) used a 14-0 run to open up a 31-11 lead a little more than 12 minutes into the first half and never looked back.

Forwards Marc Loving and Keita Bates-Diop and Williams, a guard, gave Ohio State a three-pronged scoring attack.

Williams posted 9-for-12 shooting from the floor. He made 3 of 5 3-pointers and added five rebounds. Loving and Bates-Diop added 14 points apiece.

The Buckeyes shot 58.8 percent from the floor, making 30 of 51 shots, while holding the visitors to 34.7 percent (17 for 49).

Grambling had four players score in double figures as Remond Brown and Nigel Ribeiro had 12 points apiece and Ervin Mitchell and Ulgur Hortum each scored 10.

NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way Central girls basketball team opened the season Tuesday night with a 53-40 nonconference victory over Joliet Central.

The Knights (1-0) received 16 points from Colleen Barrett, 13 from Jenna Meyers and 11 rebounds from Cora Likins. They outscored Joliet Central (0-1) by 10 points in the third quarter after leading by a point at halftime.

For the Steelmen, Morgan Jones had 13 points and six rebounds and Monica Barefield added 12 points.

Lincoln-Way West 71, Tinley Park 31: Freshman Tara Hastings scored 16 points for West (1-0). Stephanie Athanasoulis chipped in 14 points and Emily Atsinger 10.

New Lenox Mustangs: The New Lenox Mustangs youth football program is preparing for its 35th consecutive year of travel at Thanksgiving.

The Mustangs’ varsity team will leave for Daytona Beach, Florida, next week along with the cheerleaders, parents and coaches.

The Mustangs will play two games in three days starting on Thanksgiving Day. This is the program’s fifth trip to Florida. In other years, the Mustangs have traveled to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Cleveland, St. Charles, Missouri. and St. Louis.

Zach Miller Bears tight end are still watching and still care, because they’ve been a part of my journey all across the board,” Miller said.

It’s been a circuitous journey for Miller, to be sure. But he said he never considered the possibility the NFL wasn’t where he was supposed to be.

“I’m a believer of never having a Plan B – because if you have a Plan B, you’re not focused on Plan A,” Miller said. “That’s kind of how I approached it. … I knew that if I could get back healthy, I knew I could produce.”

Shea returns: Back from his five-game absence with a knee injury, Shea McClellin regained his starting job

Sunday in St. Louis, leading the Bears in tackles and registering his first takeaway as an inside linebacker.

“It kind of feels like a weight off my shoulder a little bit,” McClellin said of the forced fumble and recovery.

In his first game action in more than a month, McClellin acknowledged a “few tweaks” Sunday, but they’re normal and something he’ll have to manage.

“A little sore. But that’s after any game,” he said.

“I haven’t played for five weeks. So I feel like and old man, kind of.”

After the initial surprise, then brief trepidation, when he learned in the spring Vic Fangio planned to try him at his third position in four NFL seasons, McClellin said he’s happy with the way things turned out.

“That’s where I played in high school,” he said. “So I think that’s where I get my instincts, is from that. I’m glad [Fangio] made that decision. I think it’s worked out good.”

That doesn’t mean McClellin doesn’t miss opportunities to rush off the edge.

“Yeah, I miss it. It’s fun.

Hit the quarterback, that’s the best job in the NFL, right?” McClellin said.

“Except you get fined for it now.”

Cubs’ Maddon, Texas’ Banister are selected Managers of the Year The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Joe Maddon won his third Manager of the Year award Tuesday and Jeff Banister his first after each guided his team on a surprising run to the playoffs.

In his initial season with the Cubs, Maddon took the National League prize for the first time after the team’s first trip to the postseason since 2008.

He also won with Tampa Bay in 2008 and 2011.

Maddon received 18 firstplace votes and 124 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

He became the seventh manager to win the award three times and the seventh to earn it in both leagues.

“To be the steward of this wonderful group of young players, I feel very fortunate,” Maddon said on MLB Network.

Banister got 17 first-place votes and 112 points. He joined Houston’s Hal Lanier (1986), San Francisco’s Dusty Baker (1993), Florida’s Joe Girardi (2006) and Washington’s Matt Williams (2014) as the only men to win in their first season as a major league manager.

“I’m truly honored,” the 51-year-old Banister said. “I get to accept the award for an entire organization.”

Texas won 88 games this season – 21 more than last year – in capturing the AL West title despite several significant in-

juries, including losing ace Yu Darvish for the entire season to elbow surgery.

Houston’s A.J. Hinch finished second with eight firstplace votes and 82 points.

Minnesota’s Paul Molitor, another first-year manager, got two first-place votes and 33 points.

Maddon left Tampa Bay last winter and took over a Cubs team that was coming off five straight losing seasons and hadn’t won a playoff game since 2003.

With his colorful, fun-loving manner, the 61-year-old Maddon led a young club to the third-best record in the majors at 97-65, good for third in the competitive NL Central behind St. Louis and second-place Pittsburgh.

The Cubs beat the Pirates in the wild-card game and then the Cardinals in the Division Series before getting swept by the New York Mets in the NLCS. St. Louis manager Mike Matheny came in second with nine first-place votes and 87 points. Mets skipper Terry Collins was listed atop three ballots and had 49 points.

Awards week is shaping up as a big one for the revitalized Cubs. Third baseman Kris Bryant was chosen NL Rookie of the Year on Monday, and ace pitcher Jake Arrieta is one of three finalists for the Cy Young Award on Wednesday.

LAKE FOREST – Zach Miller totaled four receiving touchdowns from 2009 to 2011. After being out of the NFL in 2012 and 2013, then suffering a year-ending leg injury last preseason, the Bears’ No. 2 tight end has three touchdowns in Weeks 9 and 10 in 2015.

Miller said Monday he’s appreciative of his chance with the Bears, which began under former general manager Phil Emery in 2014.

“Marketability wasn’t high,” Miller said. “… But it was Phil Emery who was the GM at the time. He was a guy that liked me when I was coming out, when he was in Kansas City. I was thankful that he gave me an opportunity and really thankful for Ryan (Pace) to do the same thing after a significant injury after last preseason.”

Emery has sent Miller a few text messages recently, an act the tight end called “humbling,” and it’s not the only former boss he’s heard from. Miller said he’s heard from every former tight ends coach, including Mike Tice on Nov. 7 after his one-handed TD catch beat the Chargers in San Diego on “Monday Night Football.”

Clemson, Alabama, Ohio St., ND are atop playoff rankings

By RALPH D. RUSSO The Associated Press Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame remained at the top of the College Football Playoff selection committee rankings Monday night, marking the first time in two seasons the top four was unchanged from the previous week.

Iowa stayed at No. 5 and Oklahoma State moved up to No. 6, one spot ahead of Big 12 rival Oklahoma.

Florida is eighth, Michigan State, which plays Ohio State on Saturday, is ninth and Baylor dropped to No. 10 after losing for the first time this season.

Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State seem to have control of their playoff hopes. If those three win out they should be in, with the final spot coming down to the Big 12 contenders or Notre Dame. Oklahoma State has the advantage of being unbeaten and has chances to pad its resume over the next two weeks with home games against Baylor and Oklahoma.

Unbeaten Iowa would likely have to go through either Ohio State or whatever Big Ten East team beats Ohio State, so the Hawkeyes appear to be in good shape if they win out.

The highest ranked Pac-12 team was Stanford at No. 11.

NOTRE DAME OR OKLAHOMA

The conversation started Saturday night and it could end up being the great debate of this season’s playoff rankings.

If the Fighting Irish (9-1) and the Sooners (9-1) both win out and finish 11-1, and things don’t get too messy in the other

It has the making for an excellent debate. The Sooners would end the season with three big victories against Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma State. Notre Dame’s best wins would likely be USC, Stanford and Navy. The Irish’s loss was by two at Clemson. The Sooners’ loss was by seven to Texas. Notre Dame beat Texas 38-3, and the committee considers games against common opponents in its selections protocol.

“It doesn’t go away,” committee chairman Jeff Long said of OU’s Texas loss.

How much consideration will that be given? Who knows?

“It’s just really hard for us to look out and anticipate those things, so we don’t,” Long said.

The Sooners would have a conference championship. The Irish, of course, do not play in a conference. And there is no way to figure out how that would sway the committee.

Last season when Ohio State jumped TCU and Baylor in the

final rankings to reach the playoff, some Big 12 fans claimed the Buckeyes were aided by brand bias. The traditional power got the benefit of the doubt, they said.

If it comes down to Notre Dame and Oklahoma, two of the most storied programs in college football, brand bias should not be a problem.

PAC-12 PROPPED UP

Many an obit was written for the Pac-12’s playoff hopes on Saturday night when both Stanford and Utah lost, leaving the conference with no better than a two-loss champion.

The committee’s rankings suggest the Pac-12 might not be dead yet. Stanford is right behind Baylor and Utah is No. 13. If the choice comes down to either Cardinal or Utes at 11-2 and Baylor at 11-1, the Pac-12 might have some hope.

Remember, Stanford would have a win against Notre Dame and Utah a victory against Michigan, which is currently No. 12 and still in contention for a Big Ten title.

e’re not saying you should ditch the classic pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving. After all, in some homes, that would be tantamount to a declaration of war. And, frankly, the holidays are stressful enough. So feel free to go with a traditional pumpkin pie recipe.

But we are suggesting perhaps that pie is feeling lonely. That perhaps a second – and, in our opinion, even more delicious – pumpkin dessert would be a wonderful addition to the Thanksgiving bounty.

So we created this pumpkin Bundt cake that is studded through the center with an apple-date-pumpkin seed streusel.

And to tie it all together? A sticky toffee-coffee glaze. And because that sticky, drippy sauce is so delicious, our recipe makes extra so your guests can dunk bites of the cake into a little on the side.

PUMPKIN BEYOND THE PIE

Pumpkin Bundt Cake with Apple-Date Streusel and Sticky Toffee-Coffee Glaze Start to finish: 1 hour 30 minutes Servings: 16

For the cake: 1½ cups granulated sugar ½ cup vegetable oil 2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 15-ounce can pumpkin puree (not pie filling) 1 cup whole-fat plain Greek yogurt 2 cups plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, divided 2 teaspoons baking powder

Coat a 10-inch fluted tube pan or Bundt pan with cooking spray, then dust with flour.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, oil, eggs, vanilla, pumpkin and yogurt until smooth.

In another bowl, whisk together 2 cups of the flour, the baking powder, baking soda, salt, 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon, the ginger, nutmeg and cloves. Stir the flour mixture into the pumpkin mixture just until well combined.

In the bowl that previously held the flour, stir together the remaining 1 tablespoon of flour, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, the brown sugar, apples, dates and pumpkin seeds.

Pour half of the pumpkin batter into the prepared pan, spoon the streusel mixture around the pan in the center of the batter, not allowing the streusel to touch the edges of the pan. Top with remaining batter. The streusel mixture should be entirely covered by batter. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted at the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 30 minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack to finish cooling.

To make the glaze, in a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, brown sugar and cream. Bring to a simmer and, stirring constantly, cook for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the salt. In a small glass, dissolve the instant coffee in the bourbon, then still into the glaze. Allow to cool slightly, then drizzle about half over the cake. Serve the remaining glaze, warm, alongside the cake.

Nutrition information per serving: 460 calories; 180 calories from fat (39 percent of total calories); 20 g fat (8 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 55 mg cholesterol; 350 mg sodium; 68 g carbohydrate; 4 g fiber; 51 g sugar; 6 g protein.

I hope these bridge columns trap you into analyzing each deal. In today’s, there is more than one winning line, but there also is a trap to avoid.

South is in four spades. West leads his fourth-highest heart. What should declarer do?

North might raise one spade to two spades, but I much prefer one no-trump, especially with only three low spades. South then bids what he thinks he can make.

Note West’s opening lead. In general, do not look for a ruff if it will cost a natural trump trick.

It would be easy to win the first trick, draw two rounds of trumps, and go down. South would probably next unblock his diamond ace and play a club to dummy’s queen, but East would take the trick and return a heart. West would win and cash his spade queen before leading another heart. Unable to reach the dummy, declarer would also would lose a club to go down one.

It is all right to draw one round of trumps, but after cashing the diamond ace (not vital), South must not immediately lead a club. Then he eventually will be able to ruff his fourth club in the dummy.

However, there is another possibility that appeals to me: Declarer does not win the first trick.

Studying electrical signals given off by the brain (brain waves) and signals by our muscles has allowed us to know that there are two major types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) or dreaming sleep, and non-REM or quiet sleep.

During the night, you move between different sleep stages in a fairly predictable pattern, alternating between REM and non-REM sleep.

During REM sleep, your eyes dart back and forth behind closed lids.

Your body temperature rises. Your blood pressure increases.

Your heart rate and breathing speed up to daytime levels. And yet your body hardly moves, except for intermittent twitches.

During deepest sleep, which is non-REM sleep, hormones are released that stimulate repair and growth in your organs. And your immune system becomes primed to defend itself against infection.

Recent research has discovered that the “plumbing system” of the brain flushes wastes out of the brain during sleep. In tomorrow’s column I’ll talk about that in detail.

So, it must be obvious that I haven’t really answered your question.

I don’t know exactly why we sleep.

Nor, as far as I know, does anyone else. But it clearly is important for the health of our brain and our body.

Dear Dr. K: Everybody sleeps, but why is that?

What does sleep do for us?

Dear Reader: I get this question a lot, and we’ve talked about it before in this column. There is some new information that is interesting.

The honest answer is that we don’t know why it is we sleep. We spend about one-third of our lives doing it, so nature must have a reason for it. But it’s hard to ask nature questions – or, at least, to get an answer.

One possible reason for sleep is obvious: Our muscles may need the rest. However, the heart is a muscle, and it doesn’t rest while we sleep, thank goodness.

And like our heart, many of our other organs, such as the liver and kidneys, keep working.

Maybe our brains need rest? It makes sense, but I doubt it’s the reason. That’s because brain wave studies show that the brain is active while we sleep.

Sigmund Freud thought that we needed to sleep in order to dream. He thought we needed to dream in order to deal with hidden conflicts, desires, fears and other psychological issues. Today, many psychiatrists doubt that we need to dream for those reasons.

In the past 10 years, scientists here at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere have published a great deal of evidence that dreaming (and, hence, sleeping) is important in memory and learning.

That makes sense to me. You’d think we’d need some time, without distractions, to sort through and to organize the new information that entered our brains

Right now, it’s important for you to stay busy.

Consider increasing the amount of exercise you do each day, doing projects around your home, filling your time by volunteering, etc. If you do, you’ll have less time to dwell on what you’re “missing.” This is not to say that your sex drive will go away, but it will help you to better control it.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend’s son, “Matt,” just turned 21, but he looks 16. He has just announced that he’s moving in with a 50-year-old woman – the mother of a friend of his.

I feel very uncomfortable about the idea of welcoming her into my home and making conversation as if they are a normal couple. His father and I are the woman’s age. I don’t believe Matt has told his mom or his siblings yet.
